- 0:02That was singing with joy. But I want to let you know that
- 0:07our worship did not just end. It's continuing.
- 0:12When we sit to hear God's Word. That is worship.
- 0:16And worship is not limited to singing songs either.
- 0:18That's praise. Worship is much broader than
- 0:21singing a few songs. And so our hearts now are ready
- 0:24to continue to worship as we hear God's voice through God's
- 0:27Word. I want us to just pray one more
- 0:31time. My brother prayed beautifully,
- 0:32but it is a habit of mine to do so.
- 0:35So please join me again. Help us to worship you, Lord.
- 0:39Help us to keep your eyes on you.
- 0:41Energize every faculty of our being.
- 0:44Give us the grace that we need to absorb every truth that you
- 0:47desire to convey. Lord, show us your son, Jesus
- 0:51Christ. Oh Lord please, He is our
- 0:55delight and we want him to be our greater delight and we know
- 1:00that you will help us through your word as you sanctify us in
- 1:03the truth. In Jesus name we pray.
- 1:06Amen. In Psalm 130 verse 4, the
- 1:11psalmist says to the Lord, but with you there is forgiveness
- 1:18that you may be feared. The correlation between
- 1:25forgiveness and fear may be startling to some, perhaps
- 1:28confusing to others, because those two ideas don't seem to
- 1:32belong in the same thought. How does forgiveness provoke
- 1:41fear? Should it not instead elicit
- 1:46joy? Relief.
- 1:51Should it not cause us to expect an inner freedom As we
- 1:55experience God's forgiveness, Those rewards are indeed
- 1:59included. But the Holy Spirit highlights
- 2:02in this passage that God's forgiveness produces a level of
- 2:08fear. How do we make sense of this?
- 2:13Well, I think it helps to understand what the Bible means
- 2:17with the word fear, especially as it pertains to our fear of
- 2:21God. According to the Scriptures, to
- 2:25fear God is synonymous with standing in awe of Him stated in
- 2:30Psalm 33 verse 8. So if fearing God means that I
- 2:37respond and I remain in a position and posture of awe,
- 2:42then we can understand Psalm 130, verse 4 as follows.
- 2:47But with you there is forgiveness, that we may stand
- 2:51in awe of you. And there are many aspects of
- 2:57God's forgiveness that should inspire awestruck wonder.
- 3:03Consider the availability of it. The very fact that this holy God
- 3:07even makes forgiveness possible is awesome.
- 3:13Perhaps the inclusiveness of it that he does not discriminate
- 3:17with his forgiveness. His arms are very wide, his
- 3:21heart is very open to call any Sinner to experience his pardon.
- 3:29How about the frequency of it? Peter thought he impressed Jesus
- 3:34when he asked about forgiveness and said, yeah, seven times.
- 3:36And Jesus multiplied that in a day numbering around the four
- 3:41hundreds. There are so many aspects, so
- 3:46many components about God's forgiveness that is capable of
- 3:50melting the sinner's calloused heart when properly understood.
- 3:54But today I want to present to you one of the most staggering
- 3:57features about God's forgiveness.
- 4:01And it is this, the price of it. If there is any hope for our
- 4:10hearts to fear the Lord in light of His forgiveness, then we must
- 4:15keep in mind the high cost of His great provision, His
- 4:20greatest provision of mercy, namely, in the Person of the
- 4:24Lord Jesus Christ. What we're going to read in a
- 4:28moment is one of the most unsettling and alarming scenes
- 4:32in all of the Bible because it gives us a sample of the
- 4:35voluntary sufferings of Jesus Christ.
- 4:39We are about to behold together just a glimpse of the pain, the
- 4:45horror, the humiliation that the Lord Jesus endured to purchase
- 4:53and secure your salvation and mine.
- 4:57And this snapshot of Christ agony is incredibly valuable
- 5:02because it invites us to perceive both the severity of
- 5:07sin and the magnitude of God's love.
- 5:13Severity of sin because we are going to see the brutality that
- 5:20was inflicted against the Son of God because he became the sin
- 5:24bearer of the world. And that is what was necessary
- 5:29to satisfy humanity's immense debt before a holy God.
- 5:38The magnitude of God's love because Christ here, though
- 5:44excruciatingly and humiliation, was tortured.
- 5:48He could have instantly put it to an end with one word.
- 5:54He told us that He could call upon the Father, and the Father,
- 5:58in a split second would release legions of angels to sweep Him
- 6:02out of that place, bring Him into glory, and leave all of the
- 6:07world condemned for eternity because of an incomplete
- 6:11salvation. But He didn't do that.
- 6:16He endured every lash. He embraced every striking blow.
- 6:22He accepted every second of sickening mockery.
- 6:29Why? Because the Bible says for the
- 6:31joy that was set before Him, He endured the cross.
- 6:38What was the object of His joy? Obeying the Father's will,
- 6:42surely. But you and I also are included
- 6:45in that joy, that He would bring you and I into His fold and to
- 6:50His presence forever. I want us to also consider that
- 6:58and remember this, that every part of the Bible contains
- 7:01practical instruction. Every aspect of the Scriptures
- 7:06provides personal instruction, every part even within the
- 7:11framework of Christ's death. And if that's hard for you to
- 7:15grasp, then let me give you one example of how even the New
- 7:17Testament authors believe this. Remember the past two weeks
- 7:20we've been beholding Jesus Christ standing on trial before
- 7:24pilot and and that was a unique interaction, was it not?
- 7:28But I want you to see how Paul uses this and exhorts Timothy
- 7:33with it. So turn with me in your Bibles
- 7:34to First Timothy chapter 6 and look at verse 13 with me.
- 7:41And the reason why I'm showing you this is so that your faith
- 7:44and mine can be built up and believing that every aspect of
- 7:48the Scriptures wants to speak to you.
- 7:55Speak to you not just about Christ, but about you in Christ.
- 7:58First Timothy 613 I charge you in the presence of God who gives
- 8:03life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his
- 8:07testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession to keep
- 8:13the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the
- 8:16appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 8:19Do you see it? We've been studying about Pilate
- 8:21the past two weeks, and here's now Paul, a spiritual father
- 8:25trying to inspire his timid spiritual son, and he points to
- 8:29the greatest example of courage and boldness.
- 8:33It's as though Paul is saying to Timothy, remember how Jesus
- 8:36stood alone? Timothy, remember how he was
- 8:39left abandoned? Timothy, remember how he was
- 8:43faced by the interrogation of the Roman government and yet he
- 8:47was not ashamed, nor did he shrink back from affirming who
- 8:50he was, even though he knew it would cost them his life.
- 8:54Imitate that. Timothy, Another way to put it
- 8:59is in the same way that Jesus Christ confirmed his identity,
- 9:04though it would cost him everything.
- 9:06So you, Pastor Tim, do not be ashamed to confess his identity
- 9:11before anybody. So even looking at the passion
- 9:16of the Christ has practical instruction for us, and it is no
- 9:20different for what we are about to study together this Sunday.
- 9:24So let us read our main text in Mark 15, beginning in verse 16.
- 9:33I'm inviting you today to stand in awe of Christ's forgiveness.
- 9:43Mark 15, beginning in verse 16. It is amazing how we are
- 9:47approaching the end of this gospel.
- 9:51And the soldiers led him away inside the palace that is the
- 9:55governor's headquarters, and they called together the whole
- 9:58battalion, and they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting
- 10:02together a crown of thorns, they put it on him, and they began to
- 10:06salute him. Hail, King of the Jews.
- 10:11And they were striking his head with a Reed and spitting on him,
- 10:16and kneeling down in homage to him.
- 10:18And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple
- 10:24cloak and put his own clothes on him, and they let him out to
- 10:28crucify him. Pilot surrendered to the
- 10:33bloodthirsty desires of the Pharisees and the Jews.
- 10:37And after doing so, we read of this band of soldiers that led
- 10:40him away inside a particular location to continue their
- 10:43cruelty. You have to remember something
- 10:45from verse 15. Look at it very quickly.
- 10:47So Pilot, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them
- 10:49Barabbas and having scourge Jesus, he delivered them to be
- 10:53crucified. Before Christ was mocked in the
- 10:57way that we just read, he was flogged by the Romans.
- 11:04The Roman flogging experience was horrific.
- 11:09History has much to tell us about how this happened, and one
- 11:14of the most brutal expressions of this kind of punishment was
- 11:18experienced through what is known as the Roman Roman
- 11:20flagram. Specifically with a device.
- 11:26It was not too long, it was short enough, and because it was
- 11:30necessary for accuracy, it was a handle that had leather straps
- 11:34attached to it. And nodded.
- 11:36On those leather straps were weights and shards of sharp
- 11:41bones and metal fragments. And that instrument of torture
- 11:46had one specific purpose in its design, to RIP off human flesh
- 11:51when it came into contact with it.
- 11:56And this kind of weapon was held in the hands of professional
- 12:00torturers. This is what they did for a
- 12:03living. And so the victim would be tied
- 12:07to a pole, specifically with his hands, and he would be stripped
- 12:10naked. And these soldiers would
- 12:12alternate in beating this victim, this criminal, until his
- 12:18skin hung like ribbons, until arteries and veins ripped open,
- 12:26and to to some extent in many cases, until organs were
- 12:31exposed. This was savage, it was brutal,
- 12:35and there were different levels of offering this kind of
- 12:37punishment, but it would often prove to be fatal.
- 12:41The trauma and the blood loss explains that for less severe
- 12:47offenses, it would produce such a scarring but also free
- 12:51advertisement so that as these victims would walk the streets
- 12:55of Jerusalem or any other part of the world, people would
- 12:58understand. Don't mess with Rome.
- 13:03But the worst of the worst of flag flogging was reserved for
- 13:07the most despised criminals. Crucifixion wasn't enough.
- 13:12What Jesus experienced under this kind of experience was in
- 13:17preparation for the crucifixion. It's almost as though they would
- 13:22beat you and beat you until you're one step away from death
- 13:26and then they would pull away. You have to understand that
- 13:28there was a type of flogging under Jewish law for specific
- 13:32crimes, but there was a limit to the lashes, no more than 40.
- 13:36No such thing existed under Roman law.
- 13:41It was left up to the cruel discretion of those tortures.
- 13:47So Jesus here experiences the scourging.
- 13:52We're told about it in one word, but oh, if you just look into it
- 13:55a little bit, you would be a very cold person to not be moved
- 14:03by the imagination of this. After that, the soldiers let him
- 14:08away. And I want you to notice here
- 14:10that they didn't just lead him away with a handful of soldiers.
- 14:13We're told here that the whole battalion was called.
- 14:17This was a large body of soldiers, usually numbering
- 14:21around 600 people. So you had 600 people who were
- 14:26invited to participate in this, not because it required 600
- 14:30people, but because Christ butchery became a show.
- 14:39You have to understand that the Romans didn't feel too nicely
- 14:43about the Jews. The Jews didn't feel too great
- 14:46about the Romans. And so you can imagine the pent
- 14:48up frustration and the anger and the hatred that energized these
- 14:57soldiers. So you can just imagine the
- 15:01atmosphere as crisis there, silent, embracing this kind of
- 15:07fate. But there's somebody or some
- 15:10group of people that are missing from this audience, and it may
- 15:14surprise us. Remember, this took place where
- 15:20look again at verse 16, the governor's headquarters.
- 15:23We've seen that before if you've read the Gospel accounts.
- 15:26And let me remind you of what the Jews decided to do upon
- 15:30their arrival to pilot with Jesus in their hands.
- 15:35Turn to John 1828. It says here, then they they
- 15:49being the religious leaders who were seeking to condemn Jesus,
- 15:52then they led Jesus from the House of Caiaphas to the
- 15:55governor's headquarters. It was early morning.
- 15:58They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters so
- 16:02that they would not be defiled but could eat the Passover.
- 16:06So Pilot went outside to them and said, what accusation do you
- 16:09bring against this man? So we read in Mark that they
- 16:15brought Jesus into the headquarters.
- 16:16But we realize here in John that the Jewish leaders stood
- 16:20outside. Why?
- 16:24Because they did not want to risk coming into contact with
- 16:27something or someone that would contaminate them and then thus
- 16:31disqualifying them from experiencing the Passover feast.
- 16:36Now you have to understand that there is no law, no injunction
- 16:38from Moses prohibiting Jews from entering the House of Gentiles.
- 16:43This was a tradition later developed as a precaution.
- 16:48But do you see the irony here? Here you have a band of
- 16:52religious men refusing to get into a place, fearing ritual
- 16:58contamination. All the while they are plotting
- 17:00the murder of an innocent man out of cancerous envy.
- 17:09The hideousness of hypocrisy. Religious hypocrisy.
- 17:16And this is not unique to the Pharisees, is it?
- 17:20It didn't end with them. How many people today emphasize
- 17:24strict adherence to traditions while overlooking what really
- 17:29matters? So they're willing to murder,
- 17:34but God forbid that we come into contact with something that
- 17:38would render us disqualified to eat the Passover feast.
- 17:45How many inflate petty laws? You know, some people, I'm sure,
- 17:52while ignoring true righteousness.
- 17:55Again, this deliberate inconsistency of the Pharisees
- 18:02did not begin with him, nor did it end with him.
- 18:04I I think of a little detail connected to Bathsheba.
- 18:09You remember Bathsheba when we were introduced to her?
- 18:13When David commits that notorious sin, I want you to
- 18:16turn to that passage just for me to confirm this point.
- 18:18From Second Samuel Chapter 11, turn with me to the left side of
- 18:22your Bible. Look at Second Samuel 11 verse
- 18:254. This is after David was eyeing
- 18:35Bathsheba from his rooftop. He was supposed to be at war,
- 18:39but he was not at war. It is a very dangerous thing
- 18:41when you willingly walk outside of God's call for your life.
- 18:45You become very vulnerable when you know that you are supposed
- 18:48to be obeying God in a certain way, but you prolong that
- 18:52disobedience. David did so.
- 18:54There was a trap laid out for him, and he gave into it.
- 18:58Notice what it says. So David sent messengers and
- 19:01took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her.
- 19:04Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.
- 19:08Then she returned to her house. You see what's there in
- 19:12parentheses? Don't skip over things like
- 19:15this. Meditate on.
- 19:18The mention of Bathsheba's purification here alludes to the
- 19:22Levitical law that called for women to refrain from sexual
- 19:27intercourse for a certain amount of time after their monthly
- 19:31period. And it suggests to us that
- 19:36Bathsheba was not pregnant before she met with David and
- 19:41had intercourse with him. So that prepares us to know that
- 19:44when she does become pregnant, it's David's baby.
- 19:49But more than that, it's a clue that she honored the law
- 19:53regarding her ceremonial cleanliness, preparing her for
- 20:01sexual relations. But she had a husband.
- 20:05Some would even say that Bathsheba, after being proposed
- 20:09by David to have these relations, informed him that she
- 20:12was ceremonially clean. Others would believe that this
- 20:20means that she went on to perform ceremonial washings
- 20:23after her affair with David. Either way, you have the same
- 20:30mindset of the Pharisees, just with a different sin.
- 20:34Think about it in that one verse you read of a woman who complied
- 20:40with ritual ceremonies and at the same time commits adultery
- 20:45with her husband's boss. Unfortunately, many live
- 20:52comfortably this way. It's one thing to slip into sin
- 20:57as you're pursuing Lord. It's another thing to convince
- 20:59yourself I can live this way. And when you when you do so
- 21:04without your conscience being pricked, you are failing to
- 21:08realize that among all the sinners that Jesus interacted
- 21:11with, he expressed the greatest disapproval towards hypocrites.
- 21:20Is there hope for hypocrites? The Bible speaks a lot about
- 21:24hypocrites. You know what's fascinating
- 21:25about hypocrites? Even hypocrites don't like
- 21:26hypocrites. Is there a hope for hypocrites?
- 21:35There's hope for hypocrites. Who were the men who were in
- 21:40charge of Jesus's brutal torture?
- 21:45They were known as the Pharisees, generally recognized
- 21:48as the expert of not theology Hypocrites.
- 21:54And whenever I think about the Pharisees in light of the
- 21:57gospel, in light of Christ, my mind always goes to this obscure
- 22:01verse found in the book of Acts, and it it never fails to warm my
- 22:06heart. Can I show it to you?
- 22:09You don't have a choice. It's in Acts 15, verse 5.
- 22:14At the Jerusalem Council, there was a theological debate about
- 22:18how the Law of Moses should be honored in light of the New
- 22:22Covenant. And we're told of this
- 22:23particular sect in that meeting, and I want you to see with your
- 22:27eyes in Acts 15, verse 5. This will make you smile.
- 22:38But some believers who belong to the party of the Pharisees rose
- 22:45up and said it is necessary to circumcise them and to order
- 22:48them to keep the law of Moses. Don't look at the latter portion
- 22:52of this verse. Look at the first part.
- 22:54But some believers who belong to the party of the Pharisees, see,
- 22:59I see some smiles after Christ died, was buried, resurrected
- 23:04after the Spirit was poured out on the church and overflowed in
- 23:08Jerusalem. You had some Pharisees who
- 23:11became believers. It's possible for hypocrites to
- 23:15be saved. Oh, they still struggle with
- 23:17understanding how things relate to the new covenant.
- 23:19That's why they said what they said.
- 23:21But the Bible is emphatically clear.
- 23:23They were believers. Who's the most notorious
- 23:25Pharisee that we read of all the time?
- 23:28His name is Paul. He says, I'm the Pharisee of the
- 23:30Pharisees. So this gospel is not only able
- 23:34to save hypocrites, it's able to save the president of
- 23:37hypocrites. When I came to Christ, one of my
- 23:43greatest struggles of understanding his willingness to
- 23:46forgive me was just that. Being a church kid that grew up
- 23:50in a Christian home but was a hypocrite.
- 23:54But his love overcame my doubts and I can testify that there is
- 23:59hope for hypocrites. Are you living a hypocritical
- 24:02life as I speak? Have you soothed your conscience
- 24:08because you're obeying God in this area?
- 24:10But in this area you know it's wrong, but you've convinced
- 24:12yourself somehow, some way. Let me tell you something.
- 24:16That's not God's will for your life.
- 24:19And if you're willing to believe it, there's hope for you to
- 24:21actually know true holiness, true righteousness, true
- 24:24completeness in your walk with Christ.
- 24:28Unfortunately, some of these Pharisees could care less.
- 24:31They weren't in attendance when Jesus was being brutally handled
- 24:34by the hands of Rome. But let's come back to Mark 15
- 24:38and look. Let's look at some of the
- 24:40aspects, the elements of this experience to further instruct
- 24:45us. And they clothed him in a purple
- 24:47cloak and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on
- 24:51him. And they began to salute him.
- 24:53Hail, King of the Jews. And they were striking His head
- 24:56with a Reed and spitting on him. This crown of thorns was an
- 25:01obvious addition to the mockery, but it was also a gruesome
- 25:04addition to His affliction. Notice if you read 19 very
- 25:08carefully, verse 19, it says that they were striking His
- 25:11head. So they placed this crown of
- 25:13thorns on His head. And then they went beyond that.
- 25:17They took the Reed, and they begin to drive it further into
- 25:21His scalp, into His forehead, into that precious face until it
- 25:26was covered with fresh, warm blood.
- 25:32And as difficult as it may seem to shake off that image, the
- 25:35mention of thorns in connection to the price of our redemption
- 25:37is meant to transport you back to the very first mention of
- 25:43thorns in the Scriptures. Let me read these verses to you.
- 25:48After Adam and Eve committed humanity's first transgression
- 25:53in Genesis 317, the Lord says to Adam and to Adam, he said,
- 25:57because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and I've
- 26:00eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, you shall not eat
- 26:03of it. Cursed is the ground because of
- 26:05you and pain. You shall eat of it all the days
- 26:08of your life. Thorns and thistles it shall
- 26:11bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the
- 26:15field. So in the eyes of Rome, this was
- 26:21just scorn, but in the eyes of those who are familiar with
- 26:25redemptive history, they see not a symbol of disgrace.
- 26:28They see, in fact, a symbol of a curse.
- 26:34You know, God called for thorns and thistles to be a permanent
- 26:39visual and physical reminder of the pain that sin would bring
- 26:45into the world, the heartache that sin did bring into the
- 26:49world. When you see it in your garden,
- 26:52you're supposed to be reminded of it.
- 26:54And I've done enough work in my yard to feel that pain.
- 26:59So every time that thing pierces you or you step on it, your mind
- 27:02is supposed to go. The world wasn't supposed to be
- 27:05like this. This is sin.
- 27:11This is our rebellion. This is Adam, our federal head
- 27:14that plunged the world into this kind of reality.
- 27:19So knowing this adds commentary to what we are seeing here in
- 27:23Mark 15, that Jesus receiving this crowning of the thorns is
- 27:29not just receiving scorn. He is willing to wear a curse
- 27:38for what reason? With the full knowledge that His
- 27:42blood would undo it and would begin the glorious process of
- 27:49reversing the curse. And know this, His redemption
- 27:53with His blood does more than just redeem mankind, you and me.
- 27:58It will restore creation itself. Creation, the order of the
- 28:04universe, will be realigned because of what Christ has done.
- 28:10If you don't believe me, you have to read Romans 8 and let me
- 28:13quote to you a few words from Romans 820 where creation was
- 28:17subjected to futility. Not because Paul says that there
- 28:21were it was willing to The world did not want plagues and
- 28:25diseases and tsunamis and tornadoes and eruptions.
- 28:30It was subject to futility, not willingly, but because of him
- 28:32who subjected it. He was called to have dominion
- 28:36over the world, betrayed the world and surrendered it into a
- 28:41whirlwind of disaster, a fractured world because of a
- 28:45fractured man. But Paul goes on to say that
- 28:48this creation, creation itself, is longing for the sons of God
- 28:53to be revealed so that the freedom that would come from
- 28:55that would liberate itself from bondage.
- 29:02In other words, in the same way that we are yearning to be
- 29:05completely set free from the effects of sin, the natural
- 29:09world is longing for that same reality.
- 29:15You know, Jesus spoke about this himself.
- 29:18Yes, He prioritizes you and I being saved, but Jesus himself
- 29:23alluded to the reality of the whole world being transformed.
- 29:28One day you'll see it. In Matthew 1928, Jesus said to
- 29:34them, truly, I say to you, he's talking to his disciples in the
- 29:38new world, in the new world. The ESV renders it in the new
- 29:43world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, You
- 29:46have followed me, will also sit on 12 Thrones judging the 12
- 29:50tribes of Israel. Yet you have two options here.
- 29:55Either Jesus is speaking literally or he's speaking here
- 29:57allegorically. I'm going to go to literal
- 29:59approach. He's talking about a real new
- 30:02world. He's talking about an actual
- 30:04glorious throne. He's talking about the 12 who
- 30:07will sit on actual 12 Thrones and they will judge actual
- 30:10tribes of Israel. Now here's a question for you.
- 30:15Do you see how it says New world there?
- 30:19There's only one other place in all of the New Testament where
- 30:23the Greek word for new world appears.
- 30:25If you know it and you say it, I'll give you a prize.
- 30:31Good guess, but no. The answer is found in the book
- 30:36of Titus. Titus chapter 3, verse 5 gives
- 30:42us the one other place in all of the New Testament where the
- 30:44Greek word for New world is made known.
- 30:49Notice what Paul says. He saved us not because of works
- 30:55done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by
- 31:01the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.
- 31:07Underline the word regeneration. It's the same word used.
- 31:14What does regeneration mean? New birth.
- 31:18And in this verse it speaks about our spiritual new birth.
- 31:22We have been regenerated. That's what Jesus meant in John
- 31:25three. You are born again, transformed,
- 31:27renewed from the inside out. And the Holy Spirit uses the
- 31:31same word back in Matthew, not to describe a human experience,
- 31:36but what the universe will one day undergo when Christ comes
- 31:41back to rule and reign for 1000 years.
- 31:45In other words, the world will know a transformation and
- 31:48deliverance from sin. Why?
- 31:51Because Jesus Christ conquered death and He's coming to rule
- 31:55and reign and make everything, absolutely everything, right.
- 32:01And that's why many of you mentioned Revelation.
- 32:05You read in Revelation 22, verse three.
- 32:07No longer will there be anything accursed.
- 32:11Not one thing will be under any curse in that new world,
- 32:16specifically when the eternal age comes in, but the throne of
- 32:19God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will
- 32:22worship him. Can you imagine a world without
- 32:24a hint of Adam's curse? It's almost hard to fathom, but
- 32:30that's our reward. That's where we're headed
- 32:32towards. And so when Jesus wears this
- 32:36crown of thorns, and as it punctures his skin and his
- 32:41skull, what we have to keep in mind is that he was willing to
- 32:46take it because that's what was required to clean everything up.
- 32:57And we come back to Mark and we get the impression that as they
- 33:00were striking his head, spitting on him, and the word there for
- 33:04spitting on him was not just a couple.
- 33:06They were continually spitting on him.
- 33:09I wonder how many of those 600 people participated in that,
- 33:16spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.
- 33:22And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple
- 33:25cloak and put his own clothes on him, and they let him out to
- 33:28crucify him again. You get the impression that from
- 33:30Mark's account, after this took place, they immediately rushed
- 33:34him off so that he can be nailed on a cross and that he would
- 33:37hang there suspended between heaven and earth.
- 33:39But that's not exactly what happened.
- 33:43Mark is a little bit faster here in writing of this.
- 33:45But John tells us of an episode, episode that took place between
- 33:50his flogging and his torture and his crucifixion.
- 33:54And this is what we're going to be ending here in John 19.
- 34:01This is why it's so important to collect the Bible together and
- 34:03to compare to see the full picture in John 19, verse one.
- 34:08This is again what happened after they let Him away from
- 34:11this and before they brought Him to Golgotha in John 19 one we
- 34:18read then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourge them.
- 34:20We covered that already, and the soldiers planted a crown of
- 34:24thorns and put it on His head, and they put Him on him, a
- 34:27purple Rd. robe. We covered that and said, Hail
- 34:30king of the Jews, we seen that and they smote Him with their
- 34:33hands. Yes, but look what happens in
- 34:35verse 4. Pilate therefore went forth
- 34:39again and saith to them, Behold, I bring Him forth to you, that
- 34:43you may know that I find no fault in Him.
- 34:46Then came Jesus wearing the crown of thorns and the purple
- 34:49robe, and Pilate said to them, Behold the man.
- 34:55So again, before Jesus went to the cross, Pilate sought to do
- 34:58something with Christ. He brings him out to the public
- 35:02eye, and he wants to showcase what they did to Jesus.
- 35:07For what reason? Pilate again is desperate and
- 35:13hoping that now after he was battered, slapped around,
- 35:17punctured, bleeding, that they would have some kind of pity and
- 35:23they would see this and say wow. And that in their rage, they
- 35:29would have some kind of compassion and they would
- 35:32realize he's no longer a threat. And they would say just release
- 35:37him, that that's enough. That would be horrific enough
- 35:44for them to put it to an end. But what do you read instead?
- 35:49The venomous hatred that this people had for Jesus.
- 35:54It's as though the site only excited them more because in the
- 35:58very next verse we read that they said crucify him, finish
- 36:05the job. Yes, this is what we want, but
- 36:08we want more. Kill Him saying this is crazy,
- 36:13this is hard to believe. No, this is the potential of
- 36:17man's hatred for God. And so Pilate said, if this this
- 36:21is beyond hope, but after all this, you still want to kill
- 36:25him. He finally gives in as we
- 36:28studied. But I wonder if this man knew
- 36:32the words that he said, at least the significance of them.
- 36:35You know, when people say things, sometimes they don't
- 36:36know what they're saying. There are some who say things
- 36:39and they don't realize how foolish their statement or the
- 36:42reaction was, while others speak with a profoundness that they
- 36:45don't even recognize. And I believe when Pilate said
- 36:48those 3 words, behold the man, he did not comprehend what we
- 36:55should be familiar with in light of God's Word.
- 36:59Remember Caiaphas accidentally prophesied when the Pharisees
- 37:03didn't know what to do with him. He said, you know, it's better
- 37:07for one man to die than for the whole nation.
- 37:12And he was speaking about Christ's death and the
- 37:14significance of it. And I I'm persuaded that even
- 37:17when Pilate here in his own way, by saying behold, the man was
- 37:21making an illusion, he echoed a prophecy about Messiah.
- 37:28That phrase, behold the man, doesn't appear too much in the
- 37:31Old Testament, but there is one very crucial place where it is
- 37:35found and it speaks about Jesus. I wonder if you've ever
- 37:39considered it in Zechariah 6 verse 12.
- 37:45And say to him, Thus says the Lord of hosts, Behold the man
- 37:53whose name is the branch, for he shall branch out from his place,
- 37:58and he shall build the temple of the Lord.
- 38:00It is he who shall build the temple of the Lord, and shall
- 38:03bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne, and
- 38:07there shall be a priest on his throne, and the council of peace
- 38:11shall be between them both. The title branch is Messianic.
- 38:19It speaks of fruitfulness, it speaks of life, and it is indeed
- 38:23attributed to the person of Jesus of Nazareth.
- 38:27And here Zechariah says, behold the man.
- 38:30And we know this is Messianic because whoever this king would
- 38:33be would also be a priest. That's the last part of the
- 38:36prophecy, right? And there shall be a priest on
- 38:38his throne. Never was there a time where the
- 38:42priest could become a king or king, become a priest.
- 38:47Whenever anybody attempted to do that, it was deadly.
- 38:54There's an exception with David, but that's because he pointed to
- 38:56Christ. But here we see that there is
- 38:59coming a king who's also going to be a priest, sitting on the
- 39:03throne that is Jesus Christ. And when Pilate says, behold the
- 39:07man, all of them missed it because what they were supposed
- 39:14to see is the branch. What they were supposed to see
- 39:18is the kingly priest. Instead, what they saw was an
- 39:25enemy. You know pilots words here are
- 39:30for us as well. Behold the man after this very
- 39:34brief time, looking at what Christ endured for the mission
- 39:39of salvation. What do you see?
- 39:42What do you see? What comes to mind when you see
- 39:47this Jesus? Do you see a misunderstood
- 39:50teacher? Do you see a revolutionary that
- 39:54was caught? Do you see a philosopher who
- 40:02provided good moral framework for mankind?
- 40:07What do you see when you behold him?
- 40:11Or do you see what you're supposed to see?
- 40:14The fulfillment of prophecy? The anticipated Savior?
- 40:20The Anointed 1. That has been predicted and
- 40:25proclaimed centuries and thousands of years ago.
- 40:28What do you see today? Come on, with a little bit of
- 40:31strength and energy. Now I ask you to see.
- 40:33What do you see? What do you behold?
- 40:38How do you perceive it? Does it move you?
- 40:41What you're supposed to see is the one who is willing to go to
- 40:44such lengths to win your salvation and to call you his
- 40:52own. I I wonder if that moves you
- 40:55today. I wonder if that stirs you
- 40:58today. I wonder if that makes you want
- 41:01to know Him more, and if you don't know Him, to know Him and
- 41:05to experience Him. I wonder if looking at the
- 41:09severity of sin causes you to want to shun it with a strength
- 41:13that you've never experienced. I wonder if beholding the
- 41:18magnitude of God's love wins your loyalty as you realize that
- 41:23it has won your salvation. What do you see today as you
- 41:28behold the man? I hope today that you see your
- 41:33Savior. And if you have not acknowledged
- 41:36that today, that today would be the day where you say I will not
- 41:38crown him with my betrayal, with my rejection.
- 41:43I will crown him with my allegiance and I will give my
- 41:46life to him and surrender. And how you do that is by
- 41:49accepting His forgiveness and His grace.
- 41:51And from that place of gratitude you now live with the energy of
- 41:55His love to serve Him with your love.
- 41:58Have you made that conscious decision today to make Jesus
- 42:02Christ your Lord? What more can He do?
- 42:09What more can He offer? God gave all that He can Himself
- 42:16so that He can have you. I pray that you would accept
- 42:19them if you haven't yet. Let's pray.
- 42:41Well, we know that the prophet Isaiah said about the Messiah
- 42:43that he gave his back to be smitten.
- 42:46And we acknowledge that a man can only say and do so much to
- 42:57try to paint the picture of your salvation and the sufferings
- 43:01linked to it. But we acknowledge that only the
- 43:04Holy Spirit can make this real to us.
- 43:09So we do pray in humility that you would open the eyes of our
- 43:14hearts to behold the man for those who know him, that we
- 43:22would love him more for those who don't know him, that they
- 43:27would be won over by his love. Lord, today we worship you.
- 43:32Yes, with this very somber scene before us, but also realizing
- 43:38that there is a joy in this picture, a joy that you had in
- 43:42mind and a joy that we get to enjoy forever at your expense.
- 43:50Lord, help us honor you today as a church in Jesus name, Amen.
- 44:00Amen. If the priest team can come and
- 44:03help us sing.
