- 0:04Speaker 1: He Hello friends from across the nation and around the world,
- 0:08Speaker 1: by Martin, and you are listening to Dad's bedtime stories.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And today, despite personally being a little bit under the weather.
- 0:17Speaker 1: To be honest, We're gonna head back to the Spaceship
- 0:21Speaker 1: universe because I keep getting comments that say, do more
- 0:26Speaker 1: Spaceship episodes. So that's what I'm gonna do today. Now,
- 0:32Speaker 1: if you've never listened to the Spaceship series before, honestly,
- 0:36Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter. As long as you understand that
- 0:39Speaker 1: you are the main character. You have a magical spaceship
- 0:43Speaker 1: that can take you anywhere and do just about anything.
- 0:46Speaker 1: That's all you really need to know. Today's episode was
- 0:50Speaker 1: suggested by Anna in an email to me. Anna wanted
- 0:56Speaker 1: a world with a bunch of living per and she
- 1:01Speaker 1: had some other ideas for the series as well. We
- 1:04Speaker 1: went back and forth with a couple emails, and I'm
- 1:06Speaker 1: finally making it and yeah, that's about it for today.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And hey, did you know that if you don't like ads,
- 1:16Speaker 1: neither do I. And that's why I have AD free
- 1:20Speaker 1: episodes available on Patreon for as little as one dollar
- 1:24Speaker 1: a month, or you can even pay for the whole
- 1:27Speaker 1: year twelve dollars for an entire year of AD free episodes.
- 1:32Speaker 1: In addition to that, all of my episodes for Unbound
- 1:36Speaker 1: Superhero Academy Book one are up there, and I'm planning
- 1:40Speaker 1: to start book two very soon. So yeah, I just
- 1:43Speaker 1: want to make sure you know that's an option. If not,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you can totally listen on here. It just means there
- 1:49Speaker 1: might be an ad now and then, like right here,
- 1:52Speaker 1: for example, before the story starts. Now, it's time to
- 1:57Speaker 1: get as comfy as you can in that bed, close
- 2:00Speaker 1: your eyes and imagine yourself doing what the kid in
- 2:05Speaker 1: the story does. Imagine yourself sitting in the command chair
- 2:11Speaker 1: of spaceship. Stars stretch out ahead of you like tiny
- 2:16Speaker 1: white dots. Changer, Your shape shifting dog is curled up
- 2:21Speaker 1: near your feet in his human puppy form, softly snoring,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and man looking like he's dreaming about something. His leg
- 2:30Speaker 1: keeps twitching for some reason. Then spaceship speaks up. Space
- 2:35Speaker 1: probe returning, Spaceship says, The front screen lights up, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: sure enough you see a small silver object zipping towards
- 2:44Speaker 1: the ship in the darkness of space. It moves underneath
- 2:50Speaker 1: and well attaches to the ship with a soft metallic click.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Space Probe seven has returned from long rain exploration. Spaceship says,
- 3:03Speaker 1: did it find anything cool? Yes, I believe so. It
- 3:08Speaker 1: found several new planets, including one with unusual light based
- 3:14Speaker 1: energy patterns, possibly living technology, and for some reason, repeated
- 3:21Speaker 1: appearances of giant reptilian shapes and other interesting anomalous things
- 3:27Speaker 1: in the upper atmosphere. Ah weird. I wonder what's going
- 3:33Speaker 1: on there? There is only one way to find out
- 3:37Speaker 1: for certain. Would you like me to set a course?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Spaceship asks, yeah, I guess you probably should. In an instant,
- 3:49Speaker 1: spaceship turns to the left, points down a little bit,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and blasts forward into super hyper drive. Once again. The
- 3:59Speaker 1: star streak past until they just suddenly stop, and you
- 4:05Speaker 1: find yourself floating in front of a large, beautiful, earth
- 4:10Speaker 1: like planet. The planet fills the window. Its surface shines
- 4:15Speaker 1: with soft colors blue, white, gold, and purple. As you
- 4:23Speaker 1: dip below the clouds, you see well cities that sparkle
- 4:28Speaker 1: as if someone built them out of glass and metal,
- 4:32Speaker 1: then well cover them in giant glowing pictures. But before
- 4:38Speaker 1: you can admire it for long, something enormous rises from
- 4:43Speaker 1: behind the curve of the planet. A giant space lizard.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Its body is covered in glowing scales, Its eyes shine
- 4:55Speaker 1: like well green moons. Its tail curls so high it
- 5:00Speaker 1: moves through the clouds, and its mouth opens in a
- 5:04Speaker 1: silent roar. Uh, spaceship, you say, pointing out the window.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I see it, Spaceship responds. The lizard lunges quick, Spaceship
- 5:17Speaker 1: shift into a giant robot mode. Understood, Spaceship responds. The
- 5:25Speaker 1: ship begins to glow around you and changes its shape.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Giant legs, giant arms, and a giant robot head appear.
- 5:36Speaker 1: You find yourself well, sitting in the center of the
- 5:40Speaker 1: robot's chest. A little helmet drops down from the ceiling,
- 5:46Speaker 1: one that you know, if you put on, will sort
- 5:50Speaker 1: of transfer your mind into the robot itself, make it
- 5:54Speaker 1: as if well you are the robot. You place the
- 5:59Speaker 1: helmet on your head. There's a sudden flash of light
- 6:03Speaker 1: that causes you to close your eyes, and when you
- 6:06Speaker 1: open them, you're seeing through the eyes of the robot
- 6:11Speaker 1: or robot Spaceship. You reach behind your back, draw your
- 6:18Speaker 1: giant sword, and take the best fighting stance you can
- 6:23Speaker 1: as the glowing space lizard seems to charge toward you.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You raise one massive metal arm and swing through the thing.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But strangely, the spaceship fist passes straight through the lizard,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and the lizard kind of flickers for a second. It
- 6:45Speaker 1: becomes see through, like a picture made of light. Then
- 6:50Speaker 1: it keeps running forward and passes right through your body,
- 6:54Speaker 1: your spaceship body. Anyways, the control room glows as the
- 7:00Speaker 1: lizard's image moves through you and then vanishes behind the ship. Uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: that was weird, you say, confirmed, Spaceship replies, the creature
- 7:14Speaker 1: does not seem to be solid. My sensors indicate that
- 7:18Speaker 1: it is a holographic projection. Another image appears nearby, a huge,
- 7:25Speaker 1: glowing dinosaur with tiny little dinosaur arms and a very
- 7:30Speaker 1: serious looking expression. It stomps across the clouds, but its
- 7:36Speaker 1: feet never even touch anything. Where is that coming from,
- 7:41Speaker 1: you ask? Scanning the area, a blue beam sweeps across
- 7:47Speaker 1: the planet below. I believe I have located the source.
- 7:52Speaker 1: The projections are being emitted from a hill on the surface,
- 7:57Speaker 1: Spaceship explains, well, take as to the source, you order,
- 8:02Speaker 1: you close your eyes again and take the helmet off
- 8:05Speaker 1: of your head. It disappears into the ceiling of the
- 8:09Speaker 1: ship as the ship glows once again and transforms back
- 8:14Speaker 1: into its normal spaceship form. Spaceship gently flies down and
- 8:20Speaker 1: lands beside the hill that the signal is coming from.
- 8:25Speaker 1: The back door opens up with a hiss, and you
- 8:28Speaker 1: quickly step outside, ready to activate your space armor if needed.
- 8:34Speaker 1: You look around for the source, and at the top
- 8:38Speaker 1: of the hill you see something small, something that looks
- 8:42Speaker 1: like well, a projector, like one of those projectors you
- 8:47Speaker 1: have at school. It has a square metal body, two
- 8:52Speaker 1: tiny little arms, and two tiny little legs, and around
- 8:58Speaker 1: lens where its face would formally be. Its lens points
- 9:03Speaker 1: up at the sky, and beams of light shoot out
- 9:06Speaker 1: of it. Above the hill, another giant space lizard appears,
- 9:12Speaker 1: roars silently, and then chases a glowing moon made of cheese.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You walk up slowly, So that was you, you say.
- 9:25Speaker 1: The little projector jumps his lens flashes bright white. A giant,
- 9:31Speaker 1: startled chicken appears in the sky above him, flapping wildly
- 9:35Speaker 1: and running around in circles. Oh oh, the little projector says.
- 9:41Speaker 1: His voice is small and a little bit buzzy. Sorry,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I did not know anyone was behind me. The chicken
- 9:52Speaker 1: flickers away. You point up at the sky you made
- 9:57Speaker 1: the space lizards. Little projector lowers his lens. Yes, my bad,
- 10:06Speaker 1: sorry if they disturbed you. A picture appears beside him,
- 10:11Speaker 1: floating in the air. It shows a little projector thinking
- 10:15Speaker 1: about space lizards. Then it shows space lizards appearing everywhere.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I'm kind of obsessed with space lizards right now, Spaceship's
- 10:27Speaker 1: voice appears from your watch. I believe this species appears
- 10:32Speaker 1: to communicate through projected images as well as spoken language.
- 10:39Speaker 1: The little projector looks towards Spaceship then projects a picture
- 10:44Speaker 1: of Spaceship as a giant, shiny hero robot. Then he
- 10:49Speaker 1: projects a picture of himself waving hello. He says, I'm Flicker,
- 10:58Speaker 1: glad to meet you. Flicker. You say, I'm guessing the
- 11:02Speaker 1: giant space lizards are not actually dangerous, No, Flicker says,
- 11:09Speaker 1: just thoughts pictures. I have been imagining them a lot lately.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Another small space lizard appears beside him, then curls up
- 11:20Speaker 1: like a cat. Yeah, actually kind of cute when they're small,
- 11:24Speaker 1: You say, Spaceship interrupts. Your watch can be modified to
- 11:31Speaker 1: project simple thoughts and images. This may improve communication with
- 11:36Speaker 1: the local population. It can do that, You respond, Yes,
- 11:43Speaker 1: updating now, your watch makes little beeping noises, and then
- 11:50Speaker 1: Spaceship announces projection mode installed. You raise your wrist and
- 11:57Speaker 1: think of a smile. A glowing smiley face appears in
- 12:01Speaker 1: the air above your hand. Flicker claps his tiny metal hands.
- 12:07Speaker 1: You can project, I guess I can you respond? Would
- 12:14Speaker 1: you like to see my town? Flicker asks, as a
- 12:19Speaker 1: picture of the town appears beside him. You nod. Flicker
- 12:25Speaker 1: hops down the hill on his little tiny legs. For
- 12:29Speaker 1: such a small projector, you can actually move pretty quickly.
- 12:32Speaker 1: You follow him until you come to well projector town.
- 12:39Speaker 1: It sits in a wide valley, and it's one of
- 12:43Speaker 1: the strangest and most beautiful places you've ever seen. The
- 12:49Speaker 1: buildings are silver and white, with rounded roofs and smooth walls,
- 12:55Speaker 1: but almost nothing in it stays plain for long. The
- 13:00Speaker 1: whole town is covered in moving pictures. A simple square
- 13:06Speaker 1: shop suddenly becomes a glowing castle, then a forest hut,
- 13:12Speaker 1: then a battery with windows. The sign above its spins
- 13:18Speaker 1: in the air. Fresh batteries, long lasting batteries, emergency batteries,
- 13:25Speaker 1: dessert batteries. Do you eat batteries? You ask? Flicker nods.
- 13:33Speaker 1: He projects a picture of himself, holding a battery with
- 13:36Speaker 1: both hands and nippling on it like a sandwich. This
- 13:41Speaker 1: is how we power ourselves, he says. Different batteries have
- 13:48Speaker 1: different charges and different tastes. You continue through the town,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you pass a battery cafe where Projector people sit at
- 13:59Speaker 1: small tables. Every one of them has arms and legs,
- 14:03Speaker 1: just like Flicker, but some are tall and narrow, some
- 14:07Speaker 1: are short and round. Some have old brass bodies, while
- 14:11Speaker 1: others have shiny, new metal cases. They lift batteries to
- 14:17Speaker 1: small slots in their bodies and well eat them all
- 14:22Speaker 1: while projecting little pictures of one another. One projector shows
- 14:27Speaker 1: a picture of a sunny beach, another replies with a
- 14:31Speaker 1: picture of rain. A third projects an umbrella, and they
- 14:36Speaker 1: all flicker with laughter. They mostly talk with pictures. Flicker
- 14:43Speaker 1: explains words are useful, but pictures are faster. You raise
- 14:51Speaker 1: your watch and well project a tiny picture of yourself
- 14:55Speaker 1: looking amazed. You probably could have just looked amazed on
- 14:59Speaker 1: your own, but that's all you could think of at
- 15:02Speaker 1: the time. Several nearby pictures wave at you. One projects
- 15:08Speaker 1: a welcome sign above your head. The street lights of
- 15:12Speaker 1: the town aren't normal either. Tall poles stand along the road,
- 15:16Speaker 1: but instead of bulbs, they have little projector heads. They
- 15:22Speaker 1: cast glowing stars, moons, arrows, and floating signs into the air.
- 15:28Speaker 1: When you step towards a crossing on the street, the
- 15:32Speaker 1: street light projects a bright path across the road, and
- 15:37Speaker 1: tiny glowing footprints appear to show you where to walk.
- 15:42Speaker 1: This is pretty amazing, you say, flickers lens glows proudly.
- 15:49Speaker 1: He takes you past a shop called the bulb Boutique.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Inside you can see projector people sitting in chairs while
- 15:58Speaker 1: workers carefully replace old bulbs, polish lenses, and adjust focus rings.
- 16:05Speaker 1: One elderly projector gets a new bulb installed and then
- 16:09Speaker 1: happily projects a clear picture of a garden. Everyone claps.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Next you pass the projector school. In the yard, little
- 16:20Speaker 1: projector kids stand in rows while the teacher gives instructions. Today,
- 16:26Speaker 1: the teacher says, we are practicing calm shapes. Please project
- 16:33Speaker 1: a circle. Most of the students project circles into the air,
- 16:38Speaker 1: though one projects a square and another one gets nervous
- 16:44Speaker 1: and projects a giant pickle dancing on two legs. Everyone laughs,
- 16:49Speaker 1: that's not funny, Edward, Sorry, miss Edwards, says, and soon
- 16:56Speaker 1: his picture transforms into an appropriate circle. You're about to
- 17:01Speaker 1: ask some questions about the school when the ground below
- 17:05Speaker 1: you suddenly trembles. The glowing street signs flicker, and every
- 17:11Speaker 1: projector in town turns toward the far end of the valley.
- 17:17Speaker 1: A huge shadow rises behind the battery factory. At first
- 17:22Speaker 1: you think it's probably another hologram, but Spaceship speaks in
- 17:27Speaker 1: your watch. This object seems to have real mass, he explains.
- 17:35Speaker 1: A giant projector steps into view. He's enormous, as tall
- 17:41Speaker 1: as the buildings. His metal body sparks with electricity, his
- 17:47Speaker 1: arms swing heavily at his sides, and his lens flashes
- 17:51Speaker 1: so bright you have to shield your eyes. All around
- 17:56Speaker 1: you the projector people panic. Now, a flicker cries me,
- 18:02Speaker 1: it's Jeff. Pictures burst into the air from every projector nearby.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Together they start telling a story. You're well, at least
- 18:15Speaker 1: what they think might be going on here. In the images,
- 18:19Speaker 1: a small projector named Jeff eats a battery, then another,
- 18:25Speaker 1: then another, then a crate of batteries. Then he sneaks
- 18:30Speaker 1: into the battery factory. A sign reads experimental Batteries. The
- 18:37Speaker 1: projected Jeff opens the crate and well eats the batteries.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Then the picture grows huge, and Jeff grows with it.
- 18:48Speaker 1: The real Jeff stumbles forward, sparking and buzzing with electricity
- 18:54Speaker 1: as if his body is overloaded. His lens flashes, and
- 18:59Speaker 1: a giant holographic space lizard bursts from him and races
- 19:04Speaker 1: down the street. At first, you're not worried because it
- 19:09Speaker 1: is only just light. Then the lizard passes through a
- 19:13Speaker 1: projected walkway nearby, and electricity crackles from it. The projector
- 19:20Speaker 1: gets shocked and then collapses, with its lens flickering. My
- 19:25Speaker 1: scans indicate that that projection carried an electrical surge. Spaceship says.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Another hologram appears, then another, a glowing dinosaur, a swarm
- 19:39Speaker 1: of bright metal birds, a giant robot spider. They all
- 19:44Speaker 1: rush through town, flickering with unstable energy. Projector. People scatter.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Some try to project shields, but the electric holograms pass
- 19:56Speaker 1: right through them. Street lights flash warnings signs. The battery
- 20:01Speaker 1: cafe goes dark. The school teacher hurries the children inside,
- 20:06Speaker 1: while projecting arrows towards safety. You quickly press the button
- 20:11Speaker 1: on your watch that activates your space suit's armor. It
- 20:15Speaker 1: folds out around your body and you float into the air.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I'll stop the projections, you say. You fly towards the
- 20:25Speaker 1: giant robots spider and raise your energy shield. The spider
- 20:31Speaker 1: passes through the shield and sends sparks across your armor.
- 20:35Speaker 1: The suit absorbs most of the shock, but you feel
- 20:38Speaker 1: a little bit of a tingle. You try again, diving
- 20:42Speaker 1: through a swarm of glowing birds. They scatter and then
- 20:47Speaker 1: reform behind you. There's too many, you say, as the
- 20:52Speaker 1: images continue to spark and continue to take out little
- 20:57Speaker 1: projector people fight the images is inefficient and likely impossible.
- 21:05Speaker 1: The source is Jeff. His internal systems are overloaded. Spaceship says,
- 21:13Speaker 1: Jeff staggers near the factory, still projecting wildly. He doesn't
- 21:19Speaker 1: look angry or anything. He just looks confused and frightened
- 21:23Speaker 1: and well kind of sparky. Every time he sparks, another
- 21:28Speaker 1: huge image bursts from his lens. Oh what's happening to him,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you ask, scanning Spaceship says, it seems he is consumed
- 21:39Speaker 1: a large quantity of unstable, possibly experimental batteries. Their energy
- 21:46Speaker 1: is causing uncontrolled projection output and uncontrolled projector growth. He
- 21:53Speaker 1: must discharge the excess power. Got it? You quickly fly
- 21:59Speaker 1: around Jeff, looking for any hatches or anything. You're not
- 22:03Speaker 1: sure exactly how projector people are built, but they must
- 22:07Speaker 1: store their batteries somewhere. Sure enough, you see something on
- 22:13Speaker 1: his back that looks just like a battery storage area.
- 22:18Speaker 1: You fly in and attempt to grab a hold of it,
- 22:21Speaker 1: when a spark of lightning shoots out and blasts you backwards.
- 22:26Speaker 1: You try again, and again. You're shocked. There's too much
- 22:32Speaker 1: energy coming from his battery case. If that is even
- 22:36Speaker 1: a battery case. You say to Spaceship, interesting, we must
- 22:41Speaker 1: come up with an alternative plan. Scanning the area, I
- 22:48Speaker 1: believe I have found a possible solution.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Uh what is it?
- 22:53Speaker 1: You ask? There is a battery and energy storage facility
- 23:00Speaker 1: near by Jeff. If we can somehow plug him into
- 23:04Speaker 1: it and discharge his power, it may solve our problem
- 23:10Speaker 1: designing reverse power cord. Now, Spaceship says, what's a reverse
- 23:17Speaker 1: power cord?
- 23:18Speaker 2: You ask?
- 23:19Speaker 1: It is reversed to move power from the object into
- 23:24Speaker 1: the factory rather than the other way around. Spaceship says,
- 23:30Speaker 1: it looks like the projector has a power port installed.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Perhaps another way of consuming energy if you plug one
- 23:40Speaker 1: end of the power cord in there and the other
- 23:44Speaker 1: end into the factory here, Spaceship says, we should be
- 23:49Speaker 1: able to discharge the power. Images flicker in front of
- 23:54Speaker 1: you on your space helmet's viewscreen, showing you zoomed in
- 24:00Speaker 1: images of Jeff's power port and the power plant's connection
- 24:06Speaker 1: cord successfully three D printed incoming, Spaceship says, the ship
- 24:13Speaker 1: flies over top of you. It opens up the back
- 24:17Speaker 1: hatch and well, it drops a very long and very
- 24:23Speaker 1: thick power cord. You fly over towards it, grab it
- 24:27Speaker 1: from the air, and immediately head straight towards Jeff. You
- 24:33Speaker 1: dodge around a glowing spider projection that's sparking with energy.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Flies straight through Jeff's legs and turn around behind him.
- 24:46Speaker 1: You see the power port there. You immediately fly at
- 24:50Speaker 1: it and stick the one end of the cord onto it.
- 24:54Speaker 1: You grab the other end and fly down as quickly
- 24:57Speaker 1: as possible towards the power plant outside the connector that
- 25:03Speaker 1: Spaceship both described and showed you an image of sits
- 25:07Speaker 1: in front of you. You zoomed towards it and quickly
- 25:12Speaker 1: slam the other end of the cord in. Instantly power
- 25:17Speaker 1: begins to surge from Jeff into the power plant, and
- 25:23Speaker 1: as it goes, Jeff starts to shrink smaller and smaller
- 25:31Speaker 1: and smaller, until he's just a little normal sized projector
- 25:38Speaker 1: standing on the ground looking around rather confused. You, Flicker
- 25:45Speaker 1: and the other projectors make your way towards him. M Jeff,
- 25:51Speaker 1: are you okay? Flicker asks I I I think so? Who?
- 26:01Speaker 1: Jeff responds, Jeff, did you eat in the experimental batteries again?
- 26:10Speaker 1: Flicker asks I.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they couldn't resist, Jeff says, looking down at the
- 26:19Speaker 2: ground and projecting a picture of a puppy curled up
- 26:26Speaker 2: into a corner, like he just did something that he
- 26:29Speaker 2: knew was wrong.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Jeff, we have talked about this. Now look at the
- 26:36Speaker 1: devastation you've caused. Several projectors have been overloaded and will
- 26:43Speaker 1: require medical attention. Flicker says, well, projecting a scene of
- 26:51Speaker 1: medical projectors scooping up projectors off of the street and
- 26:56Speaker 1: putting them into cars.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I'm I'm sorry, guys, I'll never do that again, I.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Promise very well, Flicker says, before turning towards you. Well,
- 27:15Speaker 1: thank you for saving the projector town. We could not
- 27:21Speaker 1: have none, and without you you are a friend to projectors.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Well anytime you say, honestly, this old adventure has been
- 27:34Speaker 1: kind of weird. I better be heading out. You float
- 27:38Speaker 1: up into the air and Spaceship floats over beside you.
- 27:43Speaker 1: His back hatch opens up and you land on it.
- 27:48Speaker 1: You wave goodbye as Spaceship begins to rise up out
- 27:52Speaker 1: of the atmosphere. You step inside the ship. The back
- 27:58Speaker 1: hatch closes, and you press the button on your watch,
- 28:02Speaker 1: deactivating your spacesuit, setting course for our next adventure. Spaceship
- 28:09Speaker 1: says as it exits the atmosphere and jumps to super
- 28:14Speaker 1: hyper drive once again. You, on the other hand, are
- 28:19Speaker 1: feeling kind of tired, so you head to the bedroom
- 28:24Speaker 1: compartment of the ship. You climb into your nice comfy
- 28:29Speaker 1: space bed, pull the covers up to your chin, and
- 28:34Speaker 1: close your eyes. With each breath, you begin to sink
- 28:40Speaker 1: down into the mattress, releasing any tension in your arms,
