- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:32Service, and Love.
- 0:34Have you ever been sick and had to
- 0:37take medicine that just tasted awful?
- 0:41Where you're like, I can't believe I have
- 0:44to take this, but then it worked and
- 0:45it was better?
- 0:47I hope if you've ever gone through this
- 0:49experience that it can serve as a kind
- 0:51of metaphor for eating humble pie.
- 0:56Humble pie does not taste great.
- 0:58It's really hard to eat humble pie.
- 1:00It's hard to admit that we're wrong.
- 1:03It's hard to revise our estimate of ourself
- 1:05in a downwards direction.
- 1:08Think like, oh, I'm not as fill-in
- 1:10-the-blank as I thought I was.
- 1:11Competent, fantastic, accomplished, as I thought I was.
- 1:17That's the bitter part of humble pie.
- 1:19But when you eat humble pie, when you
- 1:21humble yourself, to use the biblical language, it's
- 1:24really good for your soul.
- 1:26Humble pie tastes bitter, but it's so good
- 1:29for you.
- 1:30It's so good.
- 1:31It hits your tummy even and you're like,
- 1:34oh, I needed that.
- 1:36That's good.
- 1:37That's good.
- 1:38So I want to talk about humility in
- 1:40the workplace as we're talking about formation as
- 1:43part of the meaning of our work.
- 1:44Part of the meaning of our work is
- 1:45that it's a part of how God changes
- 1:48our hearts over time.
- 1:49It's part of how he crafts our character.
- 1:51Again, he's like working in a garage shop.
- 1:54You can smell the cut wood and see
- 1:57the sawdust and the tools everywhere.
- 2:00And the project that God is working on
- 2:02is you.
- 2:02He's working on you.
- 2:04You're his garage shop project.
- 2:06And some of how he works on you
- 2:08is your work.
- 2:10And one way that work can help us
- 2:12is in growing in humility.
- 2:14Humility is one of the key Christian virtues.
- 2:17It's really interesting.
- 2:18If you study the history of how people
- 2:20thought about good and evil, vice and virtue,
- 2:23humility was not considered a virtue in the
- 2:26ancient world until Jesus showed up.
- 2:29It was Jesus who kind of gave this
- 2:31new vision of what it means to be
- 2:33good that included humbling yourself.
- 2:36And, of course, he's the ultimate example of
- 2:38that, that he humbled himself by becoming obedient
- 2:40to death, even death on a cross, as
- 2:43the Apostle Paul writes in Philippians chapter two.
- 2:45So Jesus was humble, but he also gave
- 2:49this teaching on humility that to follow him,
- 2:52we can also be humble.
- 2:53And this transformed people's sense of what humility
- 2:56was.
- 2:57Rather than something to be avoided, it became
- 3:00seen rightly as a virtue.
- 3:03So Jesus transformed the way people think about
- 3:05this, even beyond the Jesus movement.
- 3:07Today, many people who are not necessarily Christians
- 3:11will still admire humble people and still aspire
- 3:14to be humble.
- 3:15Now, that depends.
- 3:16Not everybody.
- 3:17There's a bumper sticker on the car of
- 3:19one of my co-workers at my work
- 3:21that says, not aspiring to be humble.
- 3:24And I think it's a little bit of
- 3:25this cheeky sense of like, I got to
- 3:26stand up for myself.
- 3:27You know, I got to do stuff that
- 3:29matters.
- 3:29I'm not aspiring to be humble.
- 3:30But for those of us who are following
- 3:32Jesus, that's not a good bumper sticker for
- 3:34us.
- 3:35We are aspiring to be humble, but it's
- 3:38really hard to get there.
- 3:39Because if you're like me, you suffer from
- 3:42this thing that psychologists call the self-serving
- 3:44bias.
- 3:45So I just got out a page of
- 3:46an encyclopedia here, the International Encyclopedia of the
- 3:49Social Sciences.
- 3:51Here's what it says about this thing called
- 3:52the self-serving bias.
- 3:54A self-serving bias is any cognitive or
- 3:58perceptual process that is distorted by the need
- 4:02to maintain and enhance self-esteem.
- 4:06Okay, a lot of words there, but any
- 4:09cognitive or perceptual process.
- 4:11So that means any way that you're thinking
- 4:14or any way that you see things.
- 4:17So the way you think about something or
- 4:18any way that you perceive a certain situation.
- 4:20Thinking and seeing.
- 4:22That is distorted.
- 4:24Okay, so you think wrongly or you see
- 4:27wrongly.
- 4:28Your vision and your thinking are distorted.
- 4:30They're out of whack.
- 4:31Like a funhouse mirror.
- 4:34By the need, aka our need, to maintain
- 4:37and enhance self-esteem.
- 4:40We want to think that we're great.
- 4:43And this is true socially, right?
- 4:44Like, I love to be loved.
- 4:45I like to be liked.
- 4:46I hate to be hated.
- 4:46It's also true in terms of our self
- 4:49-concept around our work.
- 4:51I want to believe that I'm an amazing
- 4:53worker.
- 4:54And so in my role at the food
- 4:55bank, I'm a fundraiser.
- 4:56And I want to think that I'm just
- 4:58the best fundraiser there is.
- 5:00And that, you know, I'm just hitting it
- 5:01out of the park.
- 5:02And then I look at my numbers some
- 5:03months, and I'm like, well, I'm a good
- 5:06fundraiser.
- 5:07But, like, I'm not the world's best fundraiser.
- 5:10You know, you need something to kind of
- 5:12check that bias that you have to inflate
- 5:15your own performance.
- 5:17Now, different people struggle in different ways.
- 5:19Some people struggle from negative self-talk, from
- 5:22thinking that they're worse than they actually are.
- 5:24And that can have different causes and reasons
- 5:27for that.
- 5:28But a lot of us, we fall into
- 5:29thinking that we're so great.
- 5:31We're all that.
- 5:32That's definitely my tendency.
- 5:34I want to read a little bit more
- 5:35of this Encyclopedia article.
- 5:36It says, self-serving biases are particularly evident
- 5:40when individuals formulate attributions about the causes of
- 5:44personal actions, events, and outcomes.
- 5:47When explaining positive actions and experiences, their attributions
- 5:51emphasize the causal impact of internal dispositional causes.
- 5:56But when identifying the causes of negative events,
- 5:59they stress external situational factors.
- 6:02Okay, again, a lot of words.
- 6:03But what this means is, why did you
- 6:06succeed or why did you fail?
- 6:08So, let's say you had a work project
- 6:10and you were helping lead the work project.
- 6:12Maybe launching a new software platform or something.
- 6:15And it went amazingly well.
- 6:18You succeeded.
- 6:19Your team succeeded.
- 6:20What does the self-serving bias do?
- 6:22The self-serving bias means when you're asking
- 6:24the question, why did we succeed?
- 6:27You're going to tend to answer that by
- 6:28looking inside of yourself, right?
- 6:31Emphasizing the causal impact of internal dispositional causes.
- 6:35So, it's like, we succeeded because we worked
- 6:37so hard.
- 6:38We succeeded because we're smart.
- 6:40We succeeded because we have the best strategy.
- 6:43Okay, a few months later, let's say you
- 6:45try and launch another software platform and it
- 6:48fails.
- 6:48It goes miserably.
- 6:50Now, you have to explain, why did we
- 6:51fail?
- 6:52And what do you do?
- 6:53Well, you tend to emphasize or to stress
- 6:57external situational factors.
- 6:59So, you say, well, it was the economic
- 7:01situation.
- 7:02The economy, we don't have any control over
- 7:04the big economic context in which we operate.
- 7:07And that shifted.
- 7:09And so, that's what affected the software rollout.
- 7:11The demand that we thought would be there
- 7:12wasn't there.
- 7:13Or you could say, you know, also we
- 7:15had this change in leadership in the C
- 7:17-suite of our company.
- 7:18Even though our team is not at that
- 7:20level, there was a lot of kind of
- 7:22chaos in people's expectations about what might happen
- 7:24in the direction of the company overall.
- 7:26And so, it wasn't really our team's fault
- 7:28the way that affected everything.
- 7:29So, you see what happens, right?
- 7:31When you succeed, you take credit.
- 7:34But when you fail, you blame your circumstances.
- 7:36This is one manifestation of the self-serving
- 7:38bias.
- 7:39And I fall into this all the time.
- 7:42I feel like I'm a super competent individual.
- 7:44So, I'm not surprised when I succeed.
- 7:46And I'm happy to take credit for it.
- 7:48But when I fail, I want to evade
- 7:50responsibility.
- 7:51And so, how do we overcome this self
- 7:56-serving bias?
- 7:57It's very common for human beings.
- 7:58If humility is something that Jesus is leading
- 8:01us into, how do we enter into humility
- 8:04intentionally?
- 8:05How do we eat our humble pie?
- 8:08Well, one thing that can be helpful is
- 8:11failure itself.
- 8:13The experience of failure can be instructive for
- 8:17us.
- 8:18And I want to go to Deuteronomy chapter
- 8:208 where it talks about success.
- 8:23But then also think about how the inverse
- 8:27of it can teach us.
- 8:28So, Deuteronomy, just by way of review, is
- 8:31the final book of the five books of
- 8:33the Torah.
- 8:33It's when Moses is sort of giving his
- 8:35final address to the people of Israel.
- 8:37So, he's kind of summarizing a lot of
- 8:38things that he said before and giving them
- 8:40warnings about what comes next.
- 8:42So, what comes next in the story is
- 8:43the people are entering into the Promised Land.
- 8:45And this comes from Deuteronomy chapter 8 starting
- 8:49in verse 11 where he's kind of warning
- 8:52them about what to expect in the Promised
- 8:54Land.
- 8:55Moses says, Take care, lest you forget the
- 8:59Lord your God, by not keeping His commandments
- 9:02and His rules and His statutes, which I
- 9:05command you today.
- 9:06Lest when you have eaten and are full
- 9:09and have built good houses and live in
- 9:11them, and when your herds and flocks multiply
- 9:13and your silver and gold is multiplied, and
- 9:16all that you have is multiplied, then your
- 9:18heart will be lifted up, and you forget
- 9:21the Lord your God who brought you out
- 9:23of the land of Egypt, out of the
- 9:25house of slavery, who led you through the
- 9:28great and terrifying wilderness with its fiery serpents
- 9:30and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was
- 9:32no water, who brought you water out of
- 9:35the flinty rock, who fed you in the
- 9:37wilderness with manna that your fathers did not
- 9:39know, that He might humble you and test
- 9:43you to do you good in the end.
- 9:47Beware, lest you say in your heart, My
- 9:49power and the might of My hand have
- 9:51gotten me this wealth.
- 9:53You shall remember the Lord your God, for
- 9:55it is He who gives you the power
- 9:56to get wealth, that He may confirm His
- 9:59covenant that He swore to your fathers, as
- 10:01it is this day.
- 10:05Okay, now you see that embedded in that
- 10:08warning, Moses kind of did a little recap
- 10:09of all the things God had done for
- 10:12the people of Israel.
- 10:13He brought them out of Egypt, out of
- 10:14the house of slavery.
- 10:15He led them through the great and terrifying
- 10:17wilderness with its fiery serpents and scorpions.
- 10:19He provided for them water, even though it
- 10:21was thirsty ground, a dry land with no
- 10:24water.
- 10:24He provided them with manna, this kind of
- 10:26miraculous bread that appeared from heaven to feed
- 10:29the people in the wilderness when they couldn't
- 10:31farm or do anything like that.
- 10:33And why did He do all these things?
- 10:34Why did God do all these things?
- 10:36This is in verse 16.
- 10:38He said that He might humble you and
- 10:41test you to do you good in the
- 10:45end.
- 10:46The people of Israel had to go through
- 10:48this long journey where they were not competent.
- 10:52They could not produce crops for themselves.
- 10:54They could not produce wealth for themselves.
- 10:57They were just totally dependent on God's provision
- 11:00for them.
- 11:01And what did God do?
- 11:02He provided for them.
- 11:03He provided for them with miracle after miracle,
- 11:06the original miracle of deliverance from Egypt in
- 11:09the 10 plagues and the parting of the
- 11:11Red Sea.
- 11:12But then these continued miracles of provision, this
- 11:14water from the rock, this manna from heaven,
- 11:17God continues to provide.
- 11:18Why does He do it?
- 11:19To humble them and test them to do
- 11:22them good in the end.
- 11:25God wants them to realize, oh, God is
- 11:28the source of everything that's good for us.
- 11:31And He wants to test them to see,
- 11:33are you willing to trust me?
- 11:34Are you willing to depend on me for
- 11:36everything you need?
- 11:40Israel, plot spoiler here, they fail that test
- 11:42a lot of the time.
- 11:43As do we, as do we.
- 11:45We so often think, I'm in charge, I'm
- 11:47competent, I've got this figured out.
- 11:49And we forget that the real source of
- 11:52any kind of success or wealth that we
- 11:54have is God.
- 11:56And this can refer to literal wealth, right?
- 11:59And this is verse 18, you shall remember
- 12:01the Lord your God, for it is He
- 12:03who gives you power to get wealth.
- 12:05So literally, you know, whatever's in your bank
- 12:06account, that's there by God's grace.
- 12:09That's literally true of the money you have.
- 12:11But it's also true of other forms of
- 12:13success.
- 12:13So when a work project really goes well,
- 12:15when that software deployment is on track and
- 12:18smooth and sales are going and everybody's happy,
- 12:22right?
- 12:22Who gave you the power to do that?
- 12:23That wasn't just you, that was the Lord.
- 12:27So in theological context, we might call the
- 12:30self-serving bias, the God-forgetting bias, right?
- 12:36It's not just that we take credit for
- 12:38something internally when we're successful and then blame
- 12:40external factors when we fail.
- 12:42It's that we forget that even our internal
- 12:45stuff that may indeed have contributed to success,
- 12:47even that comes by God's grace.
- 12:49And as much as we were smart or
- 12:51strategic or prepared or competent in any way,
- 12:55all of those are also gifts of God's
- 12:57grace for us.
- 12:59And this is why failure can be so
- 13:01instructive.
- 13:02What did God do before leading his people
- 13:04into the promised land?
- 13:05He put them in this situation where they
- 13:06couldn't really provide for themselves and he provided
- 13:10for them.
- 13:10It was almost like a situation of failure
- 13:12for the people.
- 13:13And it was a situation of failure in
- 13:15the sense that it was their hardness of
- 13:16heart that led to God needing to do
- 13:18that for them.
- 13:20But when we face failure at work, again,
- 13:23not necessarily like a moral failure of hardness
- 13:25of heart, that can be an instructive opportunity
- 13:27for us.
- 13:29So I want to share an example of
- 13:30this in my work life back when I
- 13:31was at the mortgage company several years ago.
- 13:34I had been working as the executive assistant
- 13:38to the president of the company.
- 13:39And then he had a project leader resign.
- 13:43And so he wanted somebody to take over
- 13:45as that project leader.
- 13:46And he thought, maybe, Chris, you could do
- 13:48this.
- 13:48So he came to me.
- 13:49It was an area I didn't really have
- 13:51any experience.
- 13:51It had to do with how to design
- 13:53our website to generate leads for our loan
- 13:56officers.
- 13:56So basically people searching for mortgages online.
- 14:00How could we get their information so that
- 14:02salespeople could get in touch with them?
- 14:03It's like forms on our website and ads
- 14:06and things like that.
- 14:07I had no experience in this area.
- 14:09And Kevin knew that, my boss.
- 14:11But Kevin said, you know, Chris, I think
- 14:12you could figure it out and I'll be
- 14:13there to support you.
- 14:14And so I was encouraged by his confidence.
- 14:16And again, I feel like I'm a competent
- 14:17person.
- 14:18So I'm like, I'll do it.
- 14:19I'll figure it out.
- 14:20I got in there and I could not
- 14:22figure it out.
- 14:23The data side of it, like trying to
- 14:25track all the data in our systems of
- 14:26how we were following confidentiality things to honor
- 14:30client data.
- 14:31Even while we were getting new information on
- 14:33new clients.
- 14:33But then also how do we track that
- 14:35in our system to keep track of like,
- 14:37oh, this loan was from one of those
- 14:38leads that we generated way back when on
- 14:40our website.
- 14:41And making sure it tracked through the system.
- 14:42That was super confusing for me.
- 14:44And I was working with our data team.
- 14:45But it took me a long time to
- 14:46try and figure that out.
- 14:47And I had these Excel spreadsheets that were
- 14:48like thousands of rows long.
- 14:50And I was like, I don't have any
- 14:51background in data.
- 14:52Why am I the person trying to figure
- 14:53this out?
- 14:55And then also just like the inflow, outflow
- 14:57of cash.
- 14:58We were spending money on these ads, but
- 15:00we weren't generating that many leads.
- 15:01So we were bleeding money every month.
- 15:03And so I was looking at like, you
- 15:04know, the monthly budget.
- 15:05And every month we had a meeting with
- 15:06me and Kevin and the CEO.
- 15:08Because it was a CEO-president kind of
- 15:10dual company.
- 15:11And I present the numbers of how much
- 15:13money we had lost that month.
- 15:14And, you know, it's not that Kevin and
- 15:16the CEO were breathing down my neck.
- 15:17But I just felt bad about it.
- 15:19I was like, I can't figure out how
- 15:20to make this thing work.
- 15:21Like, I don't have the right model here.
- 15:22And so like we would go and do
- 15:24research.
- 15:25And Kevin would help me.
- 15:25And at no point did Kevin say, Chris,
- 15:28you know, you're failing.
- 15:29But I was failing.
- 15:30At least that was my assessment of myself.
- 15:32After four months of this, of kind of
- 15:33spinning my wheels, not seeing a way forward,
- 15:35I went in and I asked Kevin for
- 15:37a demotion.
- 15:39And, you know, finding yourself in the position
- 15:40to ask for a demotion, that's eating some
- 15:43humble pie.
- 15:44That was a tough conversation, right?
- 15:46I kind of felt embarrassed.
- 15:48The humble pie was bitter.
- 15:49Kevin tried to talk me out of it.
- 15:50He was like, you can figure this out.
- 15:51You can hang in there.
- 15:52And I was like, no, I can't.
- 15:53And I think I made the right call
- 15:55in that situation.
- 15:55Because then they moved me to a different
- 15:56role at the company.
- 15:57I did much better in that role.
- 15:58I was training, kind of leaning into my
- 16:00teaching gifts and what my wheelhouse really is.
- 16:03Rather than all the stuff that I had
- 16:04no experience with and not very strong intuition
- 16:07about how to figure it out.
- 16:09But that was still really hard to eat
- 16:10that humble pie.
- 16:11But, man, was it good once I ate
- 16:13it.
- 16:13Again, it went down into my tummy and
- 16:15it was so sweet and good and strengthened.
- 16:17Because it was just the truth.
- 16:19It was just acknowledging the truth about what
- 16:21I'm good at and what I'm bad at.
- 16:22And saying, like, this is not it for
- 16:24me.
- 16:24I should not be put in charge of
- 16:26a website that's generating leads for a mortgage
- 16:28company.
- 16:29Like, that's not the right fit for Chris
- 16:30Easley.
- 16:31And there's just an incredible freedom in being
- 16:33able to say that without shame.
- 16:35Or even with a little bit of shame,
- 16:37maybe.
- 16:37But then, you know, you get through it.
- 16:38And it's okay.
- 16:39And that ministered to me.
- 16:42And what's the deeper reality there?
- 16:44Again, remembering that if the self-serving bias
- 16:47is kind of the God-forgetting bias.
- 16:50Is this idea that I somehow need to
- 16:52be omni-competent.
- 16:53I need to be great at everything, right?
- 16:55And what I learned through the experience of
- 16:57failure is, oh, there's something that I'm not
- 16:59great at.
- 17:00There's something that I fail at when I
- 17:02try to do it.
- 17:04And that's a little moment of self-discovery
- 17:06about how God made me.
- 17:07Like, God did not make me to be
- 17:09somebody who can generate tons of website leads.
- 17:12As best we can tell.
- 17:14And that's okay.
- 17:15If I remember, oh, you know, who's the
- 17:18one that gives the power for success?
- 17:20That's God?
- 17:21Okay, so I didn't succeed here.
- 17:23Again, this isn't always the right takeaway.
- 17:25But it's like, maybe I'm not operating in
- 17:27the zone where God would have me operate.
- 17:30And it's okay.
- 17:33So, God's the one that gives us power
- 17:35to produce wealth.
- 17:36God's the one that gives us power to
- 17:37succeed.
- 17:39When we fail, we sometimes see insights about
- 17:42ourselves.
- 17:43And about what God intends for us to
- 17:45do in our work.
- 17:46Again, not always.
- 17:47Sometimes you fail.
- 17:48And maybe it really was external factors.
- 17:50Maybe it's not that God wants you to
- 17:52do something different.
- 17:52It's just like, sometimes you fail.
- 17:54And get up and try again.
- 17:56But having that humility to say, I don't
- 18:00have to be good at everything.
- 18:02And having that openness to learn what God
- 18:06might have for you specifically.
- 18:08That helps form the character of humility in
- 18:10you.
- 18:11That helps you step into your next work
- 18:14project, whatever it is.
- 18:15With a sense of, I might not be
- 18:17the best at this.
- 18:18And in as much as I succeed at
- 18:20this, it might be because of God's grace
- 18:23working in me.
- 18:23And maybe factors beyond my control.
- 18:26I don't have to take credit for everything
- 18:27that's good.
- 18:29And I don't have to blame everything that's
- 18:31bad on someone else.
- 18:31I can just accept myself as I am.
- 18:35With honesty, with humility.
- 18:37So, failure can be instructive in helping us
- 18:38grow in humility.
- 18:42A prayer that I learned.
- 18:43I mentioned the author Leanne Payne, kind of
- 18:46a deep cut, not very well known in
- 18:48our last episode.
- 18:49A prayer that I learned from her was,
- 18:52Lord, let me never have more success than
- 18:54my character can handle.
- 18:57And I'm paraphrasing a little bit, but that's
- 18:59kind of the way I internalized what she
- 19:01wrote in one of her books.
- 19:02It's a prayer for humility.
- 19:03Lord, let me never have more success than
- 19:06my character can handle.
- 19:08It's a very un-American prayer in the
- 19:10sense that it's not pursuing as much success
- 19:12as possible at all times.
- 19:14It's rather saying, hmm, am I ready for
- 19:16this success?
- 19:17Am I humble enough to entertain this success
- 19:19in a good way?
- 19:21It's a good question to ask.
- 19:23So, if you're in a situation where you're
- 19:25succeeding, don't indulge in the God-forgetting bias.
- 19:29Remember, that's God's grace in you.
- 19:31And if you're in a situation where you're
- 19:32failing, maybe it's an opportunity to eat some
- 19:35really healthy, wholesome, humble pie.
- 19:41Lord Jesus, thank you that you are our
- 19:43model of humility.
- 19:44That you humbled yourself.
- 19:46That you're leading us into a path you've
- 19:49already tread of seeing the truth about human
- 19:52limitation and about who we are and who
- 19:54you are.
- 19:55Help us to not take credit for those
- 19:58things that are really gifts of your grace.
- 20:00Help us to have the courage to humble
- 20:04ourselves under your mighty hand.
- 20:06Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 20:08do our work with you.
- 20:10Amen.
- 20:14Thanks for listening.
