• 0:48
Speaker 1: The time has come, so let out a cheer.
• 0:52
Speaker 2: It's like someone put a curse on this town. It
• 0:56
Speaker 2: all started when that kid drowned last summer. There's something
• 1:00
Speaker 2: in these woods, and all it knows how to do
• 1:04
  Speaker 2: is kill.
• 1:04
Speaker 1: The time has come, so.
• 1:09
Speaker 2: Let out a cheer.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: Mommy's here. Can't crystal like what we love. Hello, everyone,
• 1:16
Speaker 1: and welcome to The Culture Meltdown, a show where I,
• 1:19
Speaker 1: the host of The Culture Cast, Chris Stachew, and Brian,
• 1:21
Speaker 1: the host of Movie Meltdown, sit and talk about, well,
• 1:25
Speaker 1: kind of whatever we want. Isn't that right, Brian?
• 1:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, I've spent so much time on my show talking
• 1:31
Speaker 3: about movies that once we got this opportunity to talk
• 1:34
Speaker 3: about whatever we want, immediately I was like, ooh, finally,
• 1:37
Speaker 3: I can talk about a TV show. So, yeah, I
• 1:41
Speaker 3: was kind of leaning towards this, and you got suckered
• 1:44
  Speaker 3: right into it.
• 1:45
Speaker 1: But you know what? I don't feel suckered because this
• 1:47
Speaker 1: is such a good show that when it's good, you
• 1:51
Speaker 1: don't feel suckered in by anything. So if you heard
• 1:54
Speaker 1: the last episode, you know what we're talking about on
• 1:56
Speaker 1: this episode. If you didn't, we are going to be
• 1:58
Speaker 1: talking about the third and fourth episodes of Crystal Lake,
• 2:02
Speaker 1: the Friday the 13th TV show that is currently available
• 2:06
Speaker 1: in all eight episodes on streaming on Peacock right now.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: Go watch it. If you listen to our last episode,
• 2:14
Speaker 1: And that was the only takeaway you had was go
• 2:16
Speaker 1: watch it. That's going to be the main takeaway here.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: We're going to talk spoilers. We're talking the third and
• 2:21
Speaker 1: fourth episodes, part three and a new beginning. Cause get it,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: get it, Brian. They're, they're titled after the movies. See, even,
• 2:29
Speaker 1: even then they're being smart and being very meta and cutesy,
• 2:32
Speaker 1: which I appreciate because again, intentionality is something I appreciate,
• 2:36
Speaker 1: but yeah, on this episode, we're going to be talking
• 2:38
Speaker 1: about the third and fourth episodes of That first season. So, Brian,
• 2:41
Speaker 1: I'm going to kick it to you immediately. What did
• 2:42
Speaker 1: you think of the third and fourth episodes of the show?
• 2:46
Speaker 3: It continued on doing what I wanted it to do,
• 2:49
Speaker 3: which was Pamela going down the crazy street, murdering people
• 2:55
Speaker 3: as she went. So it we as we were leaving
• 3:00
Speaker 3: off the last episode there, we kind of got our
• 3:03
Speaker 3: first glimpse that the Jason that may be. We were
• 3:07
Speaker 3: teasing whether or not we would ever really get Jason
• 3:10
Speaker 3: on the last episode of our discussion. And that was
• 3:14
Speaker 3: kind of, we had the boyfriend out in the woods
• 3:16
Speaker 3: there and he saw this image of some weird creepy
• 3:20
Speaker 3: kid hanging out in the forest there.
• 3:22
Speaker 1: And then we get the shoe thrown through the back
• 3:24
  Speaker 1: of the car.
• 3:25
Speaker 3: That is obviously Jason's doing. So in this one, we
• 3:30
Speaker 3: kind of jump in.
• 3:32
Speaker 1: After that. So we've had the promise of Jason now.
• 3:35
Speaker 3: So we have to, I guess, as we continue on,
• 3:38
Speaker 3: see how much Jason we.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: Have thrown at us. Still not overwhelmingly in these next.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: Two episodes, but we kind of pick up with her
• 3:47
Speaker 3: running off. The Grace character was hanging out with the
• 3:52
Speaker 3: cool kids and got in a fight with Claudette and
• 3:56
Speaker 3: then ended up in the shack. So we have that
• 3:58
Speaker 3: little flashback. to the kids finding the shack when Jason
• 4:01
Speaker 3: was still regular Jason, if he was ever regular Jason,
• 4:05
Speaker 3: I don't know. But once again, we get Jason being
• 4:08
Speaker 3: kind of cool. So it's, it's interesting watching regular Jason,
• 4:13
Speaker 3: knowing how he will become in future movies, but he's
• 4:17
Speaker 3: pretty cool hanging out here being.
• 4:19
  Speaker 1: Like a, a scout kid.
• 4:21
Speaker 3: He's like, look, I can put my canteen in here,
• 4:24
Speaker 3: my comic books and my chuckles.
• 4:26
Speaker 1: And I, He's very Will Byers. Like, it's very, again, like, strange. Yeah,
• 4:31
Speaker 1: he's dorky. It's very Stranger Things coded, which is very funny. Like,
• 4:34
Speaker 1: in that show, it's like, oh, you know, zombie boy.
• 4:37
Speaker 1: And it's like, well, here it's like, you know, actual
• 4:39
Speaker 1: encephalitis boy. Like, you know, he's, again, it's so weird
• 4:44
Speaker 1: to me. Jason, the killer, the most sympathetic character in
• 4:50
Speaker 1: this show. other than Pamela Voorhees. And yet that was
• 4:53
Speaker 1: what they missed in the movies. Like that was the
• 4:56
Speaker 1: part that everyone glazed over. It's like, no, no, no.
• 4:58
Speaker 1: I see the kid who drowned in the lake. He's
• 5:00
Speaker 1: a fucking psycho. And it's like, wait, what? Yeah. I
• 5:04
Speaker 1: don't think anybody ever felt that way about Jason.
• 5:06
Speaker 3: Like they liked him because they're horror fans and he
• 5:10
Speaker 3: like kick ass and he murders people. And he like,
• 5:13
Speaker 3: just completely like bludgeons them and just slashes them and
• 5:18
Speaker 3: does horrible, horrible things.
• 5:19
Speaker 1: But they never leaned into like the Jason, like is
• 5:22
Speaker 1: like this kind of like revenging force of it all. Yeah.
• 5:25
Speaker 3: There's no personality to him and there's definitely no arc
• 5:28
  Speaker 3: of him.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Like, you know, I'll get revenge on you.
• 5:31
Speaker 3: Like at most it was just like, these kids are
• 5:33
Speaker 3: screwing around. and doing drugs and I don't like it
• 5:36
Speaker 3: in my woods. So I'm going to kill you all.
• 5:39
Speaker 3: And even that was unspoken. That was just like the
• 5:41
Speaker 3: narrative that horror fans gave all of slashers overall, really.
• 5:47
Speaker 3: So yeah, there was never any real arc to the
• 5:52
Speaker 3: Jason character. There was never even backstory to him. It
• 5:56
Speaker 3: was just the mom story. He was in the lake
• 5:59
Speaker 3: and now he kills people and that's pretty much all
• 6:01
Speaker 3: we ever got from him. So This is like surprising
• 6:05
Speaker 3: how much Jason you have thrown at you through the
• 6:08
Speaker 3: flashbacks and how likable he is and how much they're
• 6:12
Speaker 3: sort of building him up as a character in the flashbacks.
• 6:15
Speaker 3: And then how important he is to Pamela once you
• 6:18
Speaker 3: see her like going through all the trauma that she is.
• 6:21
Speaker 3: So yeah, this is kind of a shock to the
• 6:24
Speaker 3: system if you're a Friday the 13th person.
• 6:28
Speaker 1: And can I also mention something else? How smart it
• 6:30
Speaker 1: was that the show– in that first episode just gets
• 6:33
Speaker 1: it out of the way that Jason dies because like
• 6:36
Speaker 1: right at the beginning. Well, and it's so smart because
• 6:39
Speaker 1: we're not like, Oh, well we don't like, Oh, it's like,
• 6:42
Speaker 1: it's building up to this moment. Like, Nope, there it is.
• 6:45
Speaker 1: Like we are dealing with the aftermath of it. And
• 6:48
Speaker 1: I think that's so interesting because again, for anyone like
• 6:51
Speaker 1: you just alluded to that has watched the movies, you
• 6:53
Speaker 1: never see this. You never have seen this before. So
• 6:57
Speaker 1: even if it's like, well, this is a, you know,
• 6:59
Speaker 1: taking place. And it's like, This is its own thing
• 7:02
Speaker 1: to begin with, but it's also talking about a time
• 7:05
Speaker 1: that you have just not seen before in the mythology
• 7:08
  Speaker 1: of this franchise.
• 7:10
Speaker 3: Like even in the Jason flashback seconds, and it is
• 7:13
Speaker 3: like seconds and sort of out of focus in mom's
• 7:17
Speaker 3: head for a few minutes at the very end of
• 7:20
Speaker 3: the movie. Do you even see Jason bobbing up and
• 7:23
Speaker 3: down in the water? So like, again, you don't really
• 7:25
Speaker 3: see any version of this. And even on this, in
• 7:28
Speaker 3: that first episode, you don't see what goes on in
• 7:31
Speaker 3: the water. He just sort of disappears. So it kind
• 7:34
Speaker 3: of keeps that mystery. But at the same time, he's gone. Like,
• 7:37
Speaker 3: there's no more version of Jason from that point on.
• 7:40
Speaker 3: It's just mom dealing with trauma after that and flashbacks.
• 7:44
Speaker 3: So it is an interesting way to handle that. That, like,
• 7:47
Speaker 3: right out of the gate, we murder this child. And then, like,
• 7:50
Speaker 3: it's like, okay, well, now we're going to tell you
• 7:52
Speaker 3: the rest of the story.
• 7:53
Speaker 1: Don't worry. It gets more depressing. Hold on. Like. But
• 7:57
Speaker 1: I do appreciate that the show understands we have an
• 8:03
Speaker 1: opportunity to do something with the Jason character. But like
• 8:06
Speaker 1: you said, was again, I felt like the obvious, which
• 8:10
Speaker 1: is it's a really sad story. make Jason super sympathetic
• 8:14
Speaker 1: and you can get so much more mileage out of
• 8:16
Speaker 1: him killing people because then it feels imminently justified and
• 8:20
Speaker 1: you don't have to make me hate them. I just
• 8:22
Speaker 1: want to see him kill them because they deserved it
• 8:24
Speaker 1: to begin with because he's a sympathetic character. And that's
• 8:26
Speaker 1: exactly what has been happening since this show started. It's like,
• 8:30
Speaker 1: it's making my feelings towards the Claudette character complex because
• 8:34
Speaker 1: Jason is very likable as a character. There's nothing about
• 8:37
Speaker 1: him where I'm like, Oh, okay. Like you can see
• 8:40
Speaker 1: how he's a killer. Like there's no Michael Myers here.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: None of it. Talk about humanizing him.
• 8:45
Speaker 3: This was one of the, I was surprised they went
• 8:48
Speaker 3: down this road, but I find it really like kind
• 8:51
Speaker 3: of refreshing that like they make him a real kid
• 8:55
Speaker 3: because mom's cleaning out, you know, like she's finally decided
• 8:58
Speaker 3: I'm going to go on with my life. And the
• 9:00
Speaker 3: sheriff comes over to help her. They're cleaning out his
• 9:02
Speaker 3: room and they find a playboy. And I was like,
• 9:04
Speaker 3: I don't know that they would have done that in reality.
• 9:07
Speaker 3: in different versions of this. Like it's very humanizing. It
• 9:11
Speaker 3: makes him a real kid. It makes him a real.
• 9:13
Speaker 1: Turning into a teenager kid.
• 9:15
Speaker 3: And like, that's what is going on at that point.
• 9:18
Speaker 3: So I was, I really liked that because it made
• 9:21
Speaker 3: him a real kid.
• 9:22
Speaker 1: And it makes it feel even more sad that he
• 9:26
Speaker 1: is like making, you know, he's Pamela Voorhees is already
• 9:31
Speaker 1: clearly susceptible to whatever it is that's going on with
• 9:34
Speaker 1: her and again you and i like we mentioned in
• 9:36
Speaker 1: the last episode we've only watched through episode four so
• 9:40
Speaker 1: we've only watched the first half of this show and
• 9:44
Speaker 1: jason as a character i think it's so smart that
• 9:47
Speaker 1: he's a sympathetic character because you're gonna get more mileage
• 9:49
Speaker 1: out of that in the long run with whatever you
• 9:52
Speaker 1: do with him as a character in the finality of
• 9:56
Speaker 1: this show if he starts out as a sympathetic character
• 9:59
Speaker 1: and by the end of it, he's no longer a
• 10:01
Speaker 1: sympathetic character that makes it a more complex, you know,
• 10:05
Speaker 1: where's my arc, Tony? It makes it an actual arc
• 10:08
Speaker 1: of a character as opposed to, well, he's just been
• 10:10
Speaker 1: killing people this whole time. Like, okay, great. But to
• 10:15
Speaker 1: what end? And in a TV show, like to what
• 10:17
Speaker 1: end has to be answered? Well, they also kind of
• 10:20
  Speaker 1: play with that.
• 10:22
Speaker 3: There's so many, and mostly with Jason, because he doesn't
• 10:28
Speaker 3: have that much time. So the time that we spend
• 10:31
Speaker 3: with him, they bother to work in these little references
• 10:33
Speaker 3: that are just kind of, I guess, cute if you
• 10:37
Speaker 3: know Friday the 13th lore. But other than that, you
• 10:40
Speaker 3: might not even notice. But the fact that in the beginning,
• 10:44
Speaker 3: when she's she she brings out like the supplies for
• 10:48
Speaker 3: them to go camping and he immediately is drawn to
• 10:51
Speaker 3: the machete so that in and of itself is funny
• 10:54
Speaker 3: but also like he like holds it up like a
• 10:56
Speaker 3: sword and is the.
• 10:57
Speaker 1: Woods are mine it's like i'm the king of the
• 11:00
Speaker 1: woods baby that's yeah it's like that's very yeah fuck
• 11:04
Speaker 1: yeah jason yeah you are like it's going to be
• 11:07
Speaker 1: your your domain in the future don't you worry But
• 11:11
Speaker 1: even her mom's response is, you look like a crazy person,
• 11:15
Speaker 1: which again is its own joke.
• 11:17
Speaker 3: Like, yeah, the guy who machetes people in the woods. Yeah,
• 11:20
Speaker 3: that's a crazy person for you.
• 11:22
Speaker 1: So like they realize these moments and.
• 11:25
Speaker 3: Like they're kind of playing with the Jason of it all,
• 11:28
Speaker 3: but doing it just almost subtle, just enough that you're like, okay,
• 11:33
  Speaker 3: I see what.
• 11:33
  Speaker 1: They're doing there.
• 11:34
Speaker 3: So we get a few moments of that as we're
• 11:37
Speaker 3: going along, that it's them just sort of playing with
• 11:40
Speaker 3: the the joke of it all of what Jason will become,
• 11:44
Speaker 3: but now he's just a cute little kid. So we
• 11:46
Speaker 3: can throw in these lines and it makes it okay.
• 11:48
Speaker 1: Well, and like we talked about in the last episode,
• 11:52
Speaker 1: maybe what Jason was in the other universe, like who
• 11:57
Speaker 1: knows what it is here. We don't right now. We
• 12:00
Speaker 1: don't know what is where Jason factors into this show.
• 12:05
Speaker 1: We know what we've seen Jason as a child, but
• 12:08
Speaker 1: we do not know. what Jason is if, if right. Like,
• 12:14
Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not speaking for you out of turn.
• 12:16
Speaker 1: Am I like, I don't know what this show is
• 12:18
Speaker 1: doing with Jason as a character. Genuinely. And that's a
• 12:21
Speaker 1: good thing. Yeah. I like that.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: They haven't, officially committed to like, we haven't flash forward.
• 12:27
Speaker 1: They haven't shown their hand lumbering through the woods with
• 12:31
Speaker 1: a hockey mask on that. They legally may or may
• 12:33
Speaker 1: not be able to do other things. We've seen things,
• 12:36
Speaker 1: but we don't know what it is. And I think
• 12:38
Speaker 1: they legally can. If they're, if they're having horror ink
• 12:41
Speaker 1: showing up at the beginning of this show, my assumption
• 12:44
Speaker 1: is that Jason can show up with the hockey. Like
• 12:47
Speaker 1: what the fuck? Like they have the, the, the, the
• 12:49
Speaker 1: trademark down on a hockey mask. You know what I mean? Like,
• 12:52
Speaker 1: of course. You can have Jason killing people in this
• 12:55
Speaker 1: show without Jason killing people in this show. If you
• 12:58
Speaker 1: really want to do Jason, you can do Jason without
• 13:01
Speaker 1: the hockey mask, as it is anyways.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: That's definitely, I mean, this early on, because again, he's
• 13:08
Speaker 3: not the killer in the, spoilers, for the first movie.
• 13:12
Speaker 3: He's not the killer. In the second one, he still
• 13:15
Speaker 3: doesn't have the hockey mask.
• 13:16
Speaker 1: If it's Jason just reincarnated by the lake as the
• 13:19
Speaker 1: spirit of vengeance- I can get on board with that too. Like, yeah,
• 13:23
Speaker 1: you know what? Like that has a very indigenous first
• 13:26
Speaker 1: people vibe to it. You know, you speak, you spoke
• 13:29
Speaker 1: to the it of it all. You know, the thing
• 13:32
Speaker 1: that I think they fucked up so badly in that
• 13:35
Speaker 1: second movie, the actual, how do you kill Pennywise of
• 13:38
Speaker 1: it all? That's explained in the book ad nauseum. Like,
• 13:42
Speaker 1: and in the movie, they're like ritual of chewed. Ha ha.
• 13:44
Speaker 1: It sounds dumb. And we don't explain it very well. Like, yep. No,
• 13:48
  Speaker 1: you didn't. And I feel like we're kind of, I
• 13:52
Speaker 1: wouldn't be surprised if they go that direction where we
• 13:55
Speaker 1: have something that speaks to like, why are things like this?
• 13:59
Speaker 1: And if it's like some sort of first people, indigenous explanation,
• 14:03
Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised because again, like Camp Crystal Lake
• 14:06
Speaker 1: on the East coast where the first people were like, yeah, like, uh, yeah, I, I,
• 14:12
Speaker 1: if that's where they're going, okay. Because you know what?
• 14:15
Speaker 1: Like kind of makes sense given that it's a summer
• 14:18
Speaker 1: camp on the East coast and And there's a lake there.
• 14:21
Speaker 1: And you know, crazy Ralph is like the lake never
• 14:23
Speaker 1: gives up. It's dead. Like, yeah. Oh, like, okay. Like
• 14:27
Speaker 1: I'm on board with that. And if that's where the
• 14:30
Speaker 1: show is going, awesome. Cause like, I'm not saying, I
• 14:33
Speaker 1: don't know if it is or isn't, but that feels
• 14:36
Speaker 1: like a logical direction to go. Because again, that's an
• 14:39
Speaker 1: unmind part of this story that again, could explain why
• 14:43
Speaker 1: and where Jason is what he is. And if Jason
• 14:46
Speaker 1: is even a physical manifestation or just like a, spiritual,
• 14:50
Speaker 1: you know, can pass in it, phase in and out
• 14:53
Speaker 1: type thing. Never been explained because he does technically die
• 14:55
Speaker 1: and get resurrected over and over again. If that's the
• 14:58
Speaker 1: direction they go with things, which again, they kind of
• 15:01
Speaker 1: cutely hinted at shit, which is the part that I
• 15:03
Speaker 1: love about this. These kinds of shows is like, again,
• 15:07
Speaker 1: like we know what we're doing. Follow us, please. We
• 15:10
Speaker 1: know what we're doing. I'm like, yeah, I trust you.
• 15:12
Speaker 1: And I putting my trust in a filmmaker or, tv
• 15:17
Speaker 1: writer or showrunner is like as someone who watches a
• 15:20
Speaker 1: lot of stuff like you do like and we've committed
• 15:23
Speaker 1: to engage for eight hours with this show i do
• 15:26
Speaker 1: not feel like my trust is being wasted or taken
• 15:30
Speaker 1: advantage of and i can't say that for everything because
• 15:32
Speaker 1: like i've seen plenty of shows that shit the bed
• 15:35
Speaker 1: beyond shit the bed and like this show so far
• 15:38
Speaker 1: has not shit the bed even remotely I do feel
• 15:42
Speaker 1: like that's initially where I thought it would go. And
• 15:46
  Speaker 1: I guess if.
• 15:47
Speaker 3: I came up with a backstory for the Jacev at all,
• 15:50
Speaker 3: that might be more of the spirit of the woods
• 15:53
  Speaker 3: kind of.
• 15:53
Speaker 1: A thing or the magical lake with some sort of
• 15:56
Speaker 1: healing powers or whatever the hell it is.
• 15:59
Speaker 3: Again, they keep teasing the other option that I feel
• 16:02
Speaker 3: like because there's so much of that being thrown around,
• 16:06
Speaker 3: I almost feel like they're going to go a way
• 16:08
  Speaker 3: more man-made direction.
• 16:11
Speaker 1: Government run. I mean, why does it have to be either?
• 16:14
Speaker 1: It could be fucking both by accident. Like, Oh, it's
• 16:18
Speaker 1: what's the worst thing that could wander into a lake
• 16:20
Speaker 1: that reincarnates people is the kid who can't die. Like, Oh,
• 16:24
Speaker 1: like yikes. And like, or ages really quickly, possibly like, again,
• 16:30
Speaker 1: because we do see at the beginning of the last episode,
• 16:33
Speaker 1: a big version of Jason grabbing his mom out of
• 16:36
Speaker 1: the boat, like the end of the first movie.
• 16:40
Speaker 3: There's, I mean, it jumps around time wise, so it's
• 16:44
Speaker 3: hard to say because I feel like it was like
• 16:47
Speaker 3: a five year gap.
• 16:49
Speaker 1: If you go by what.
• 16:50
Speaker 3: It was originally supposed to be from when he like
• 16:52
Speaker 3: drowned versus when they reopened the camp. So he would
• 16:56
Speaker 3: have been like heading towards like 16 or so. So
• 17:00
Speaker 3: still not like the big dude that we know from
• 17:03
  Speaker 3: all the movies.
• 17:04
Speaker 1: So this slows it down a lot like this is
• 17:06
Speaker 1: he dies and then nine months later. It's like, we're
• 17:09
Speaker 1: reopening the camp, which I like is very Jaws. You know,
• 17:13
Speaker 1: it's like, oh, well, you know, like, why would we
• 17:15
Speaker 1: keep it closed? And it's like, why wouldn't you keep
• 17:17
Speaker 1: it closed? Fucking assholes. Like, well, we got to make money.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: And if we don't make money, it's like, right. Okay.
• 17:22
Speaker 3: I got that vibe when she was at the picnic
• 17:24
Speaker 3: and she was just like, get out of the water,
• 17:26
Speaker 3: get out of the water. Like she was yelling at
• 17:28
Speaker 3: everybody to quit having their party because they don't care
• 17:31
  Speaker 3: about her son.
• 17:32
Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, they do all suck. But at
• 17:34
Speaker 1: the same time, it felt very Jaws, get out of
• 17:36
Speaker 1: the water. Yeah. I really enjoy that, like we've talked
• 17:44
Speaker 1: about before, the show is willing to wear its influences
• 17:49
Speaker 1: directly on its sleeve. Because for me, again, I know
• 17:54
Speaker 1: that some people might be annoyed by that. But for me,
• 17:58
Speaker 1: I appreciate that the show exists in a world where
• 18:02
Speaker 1: it assumes that I am a watcher of something other
• 18:06
Speaker 1: than this. And that I've come prepared to enjoy this
• 18:09
Speaker 1: where the filmmaker or showrunner wants me to enjoy it.
• 18:13
Speaker 3: This is also where it starts to change because before
• 18:16
Speaker 3: we got a little of the like sad end of
• 18:19
Speaker 3: true crime where you've got guys trying to beat up
• 18:22
Speaker 3: on some woman and she has to kill them. So
• 18:23
Speaker 3: that's more of a revenge version of that. But when
• 18:26
Speaker 3: we get to episode three, it starts to become more
• 18:29
Speaker 3: of a true crime solving the mystery aspect because then
• 18:32
Speaker 3: we start getting the sheriff and they're like, finding the
• 18:37
Speaker 3: rental car and like trying to track down, like they're
• 18:40
Speaker 3: figuring out the mystery and what happened to these guys
• 18:42
Speaker 3: and where did this car come from? And like, so
• 18:44
Speaker 3: there's also that aspect that again, kind of works on
• 18:48
Speaker 3: its own. Like if this weren't in the middle of
• 18:51
Speaker 3: a Friday, the 13th story, it would still be a
• 18:54
  Speaker 3: compelling small town.
• 18:55
Speaker 1: Two guys showed up here and got murdered story.
• 18:58
Speaker 3: You know, it's like, if it wasn't already tied to
• 19:01
Speaker 3: this I still feel like what it's doing in this
• 19:04
Speaker 3: solving the mystery aspect as we go on through these
• 19:06
Speaker 3: next two episodes is really interesting and kind of compelling
• 19:10
Speaker 3: that I could see it pulling in viewers just from
• 19:13
  Speaker 3: that angle.
• 19:14
Speaker 1: Cause I feel like that stuff kind of works too. Well,
• 19:17
Speaker 1: unlike you mentioned, you know, it, it is kind of doing,
• 19:20
Speaker 1: it's doing different things and having different kind of offshoots
• 19:25
Speaker 1: and tangents to things going on, but also in those
• 19:28
Speaker 1: moments doing something different, you know, we, We talked a
• 19:31
Speaker 1: little bit about the Grace character in the last episode,
• 19:35
Speaker 1: but in this episode, we get to see more of her,
• 19:37
Speaker 1: especially in episode four. But in episode three, Pamela kills
• 19:41
Speaker 1: her mom because she thinks that she's burning her arm
• 19:46
Speaker 1: with cigarettes. Turns out she's burning herself. so is her
• 19:50
  Speaker 1: mom abusing her.
• 19:51
Speaker 3: I mean she sucks but i don't know if she
• 19:55
Speaker 3: sucks as bad as we thought she.
• 19:57
Speaker 1: Did can't you can't do what pamela does to someone
• 20:01
Speaker 1: just for sucking i guess is my whole thing That's
• 20:06
Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Her mom's just kind of an asshole.
• 20:08
Speaker 1: But yeah, she feels like she's like.
• 20:12
Speaker 3: Protecting her from full on abuse, whereas she's just kind
• 20:16
Speaker 3: of a shitty mom.
• 20:17
Speaker 1: But a lot of people grow up with shitty parents. Like,
• 20:20
Speaker 1: what are you going to do? So murder them? Oh,
• 20:23
Speaker 1: if you're Pamela, that seems to be the case. Well,
• 20:27
Speaker 1: I do like what is the show saying, I guess,
• 20:29
  Speaker 1: is my question.
• 20:31
Speaker 3: Well, I like we already spend time with Grace before that,
• 20:35
Speaker 3: because we also start seeing her just sort of, I
• 20:38
Speaker 3: said before, she's sort of blossoming as a woman, but
• 20:42
Speaker 3: not that that's not cheesy enough.
• 20:44
Speaker 1: But we also see her just growing as an adult.
• 20:47
Speaker 3: And like you see her start to question all these things,
• 20:51
Speaker 3: specifically like Claudette, because Claudette was like the person she
• 20:55
Speaker 3: looked up to and who she thought was the cool
• 20:57
Speaker 3: like teenager that she wanted to be like.
• 20:59
Speaker 1: And then Almost overnight, she's like, you know what?
• 21:03
Speaker 3: You're full of shit like you. You've been kind of
• 21:07
Speaker 3: a bad person to other people. And then specifically, she's
• 21:10
Speaker 3: kind of being a jerk to her and she won't
• 21:12
Speaker 3: let her party like she wants to again, like a teenager.
• 21:15
Speaker 3: And I do like it's funny that like to the
• 21:18
Speaker 3: point that she like kind of kicks her ass in.
• 21:20
Speaker 1: The bathroom, like even though she's several years younger than her,
• 21:24
Speaker 1: she kind of beats Claudette's ass.
• 21:26
Speaker 3: Like had the teacher person not showed up, I was like,
• 21:30
Speaker 3: all right, see one more reason.
• 21:31
Speaker 1: I think Grace is awesome. She's a much more interesting
• 21:35
Speaker 1: character than I would have thought a show like this
• 21:37
Speaker 1: would have been willing to introduce.
• 21:41
Speaker 3: And just spend this much time on, because again, I thought.
• 21:45
Speaker 3: Like I said last episode, when she sat down next
• 21:49
Speaker 3: to him, I was like, oh, look, Jason has a friend.
• 21:50
Speaker 3: But I kind of thought that's as far as it
• 21:52
Speaker 3: was going. And then you started to see a little
• 21:55
Speaker 3: bit of a surrogate mom thing kind of kick in.
• 21:58
Speaker 3: Even the last episode, you saw Pamela kept checking in
• 22:02
Speaker 3: on her. But then by the time we get to this,
• 22:05
Speaker 3: she's become kind of our... default new main character in
• 22:10
Speaker 3: the kid world because we took Jason out. So like
• 22:13
Speaker 3: she's the the takeover version, like for for our teenage kid.
• 22:18
Speaker 3: And like she's the one that's also kind of going
• 22:21
Speaker 3: through the stages of what Jason was starting to.
• 22:24
Speaker 1: Go through before he died.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: So it's like we start to see her as our
• 22:27
Speaker 3: new stand in that's like starting to grow up, starting
• 22:32
Speaker 3: to question the people around her and the bullshit of the,
• 22:35
Speaker 3: we all, again, teenagers, you start to figure out the
• 22:38
Speaker 3: whole damn world's bullshit. So like you see like this
• 22:41
Speaker 3: innocent little kid, even in the first episode to by
• 22:44
Speaker 3: episode three, she's already like getting into fights in the
• 22:47
Speaker 3: bathroom and telling her friends that she thinks she sucks.
• 22:50
Speaker 3: And like, Burning herself because she's a weird, moody teenager now. So, yeah,
• 22:55
Speaker 3: there's just so many stages that kick in in the
• 22:57
Speaker 3: span of like three or four episodes here. That's like
• 23:01
Speaker 3: pretty impressive for a character that we just met, you know, three,
• 23:05
  Speaker 3: four hours ago.
• 23:06
Speaker 1: And I don't know if they could have done something
• 23:09
Speaker 1: like this 10 years ago with a female teenage character,
• 23:13
Speaker 1: because I think, well, no, I, you know, I think
• 23:16
Speaker 1: of something like Game of Thrones that really squandered a
• 23:19
Speaker 1: lot of its female characters. I'm not going to say like, oh,
• 23:23
Speaker 1: it's only men's fault because of that. No, there were
• 23:25
Speaker 1: men and women writing on that show. That wasn't just
• 23:28
Speaker 1: like a male writer's room. There were men and women
• 23:31
Speaker 1: directing and writing that show. It was not a men's
• 23:36
  Speaker 1: only writer's room for God's sakes. I don't think any
• 23:39
Speaker 1: writer's room in Hollywood is a men's only writer's room anymore.
• 23:44
Speaker 1: And as I as I sit here, like the character
• 23:47
Speaker 1: of Grace is such a weird character to be in
• 23:49
Speaker 1: a mainstream TV show. But it's it works because, again,
• 23:54
Speaker 1: like Friday the 13th has a really weird and complicated
• 23:58
Speaker 1: history of sexuality because it is the one similarly to Halloween,
• 24:02
Speaker 1: I guess. But I would say like Friday the 13th
• 24:05
Speaker 1: more so. It's like you have sex, you die.
• 24:10
Speaker 3: Well, it's also just the changes of shows that are
• 24:13
Speaker 3: coming out too. Cause we've, we've several times brought up
• 24:17
Speaker 3: the stranger things of it all, but you look at that,
• 24:20
Speaker 3: it started out, you know, as a, as a show
• 24:23
Speaker 3: about four dorky boys and you add this 11 character
• 24:26
Speaker 3: and she's like this super cool female character. But before
• 24:30
Speaker 3: we're done, it's like, by the time you bring in
• 24:32
Speaker 3: like Sadie Sink, like damn near steals that show.
• 24:35
Speaker 1: I think she does, frankly. She does.
• 24:39
Speaker 3: But then, like, even the last season, the Holly, like,
• 24:41
Speaker 3: becomes our lead character.
• 24:43
Speaker 1: And she's, like, an even younger... Because the other ones
• 24:45
Speaker 1: were all in their mid-30s by that point. Still in
• 24:48
  Speaker 1: high school.
• 24:48
Speaker 3: So, like, we brought in a new young character. And so, like,
• 24:52
Speaker 3: I do feel like there is something to be said of, like,
• 24:55
Speaker 3: young female characters that are, like, these kids that grew
• 24:59
Speaker 3: up watching Rey be the superstar of the universe.
• 25:02
  Speaker 1: You know?
• 25:03
  Speaker 3: It's, like, it's... It's changed a lot, even in the
• 25:06
  Speaker 3: last 10, 20 years that like there's a whole new
• 25:09
Speaker 3: wave of you can have a strong female lead and
• 25:13
Speaker 3: it still be a successful thing. And that didn't used
• 25:16
Speaker 3: to be, you know, there were it was always the
• 25:19
Speaker 3: male lead or you'd occasionally get a weird female lead.
• 25:22
Speaker 1: But this is a movie for girls. This is a
• 25:23
Speaker 1: show for girls. And like, I don't think that's the
• 25:26
Speaker 1: case anymore. I think now.
• 25:27
Speaker 3: If you just make a good, strong character, regardless of
• 25:31
Speaker 3: the gender, like the show.
• 25:33
  Speaker 1: Can be successful.
• 25:34
Speaker 3: And that didn't used to be the case, I feel like,
• 25:36
  Speaker 3: but it's, it's definitely changed. So I think that's, that's
• 25:39
Speaker 3: why I don't feel like it's as much of an
• 25:41
Speaker 3: issue here. I think she, she very easily is becoming
• 25:45
Speaker 3: lead of the show next to Pamela because she's such
• 25:48
Speaker 3: a well-written character and is going through this impressive, like
• 25:53
Speaker 3: arc of stuff in, in a, short amount of time really,
• 25:56
Speaker 3: but you're seeing her kind of growing up way faster
• 25:59
Speaker 3: than you probably would want a kid to.
• 26:02
Speaker 1: And like you've mentioned, I think it's also very smart
• 26:05
Speaker 1: that we have a child character that is not Jason
• 26:11
Speaker 1: was associated with Jason, but is not Jason that we
• 26:15
Speaker 1: can have a flashback interaction with separate from Pamela, the
• 26:21
Speaker 1: other kind of character that interacted and had a relationship
• 26:24
Speaker 1: with Jason. but also is a female character that has
• 26:28
Speaker 1: agency and autonomy of her own that then is interacting
• 26:32
Speaker 1: with Jason's mom. Who's trying to take her on as
• 26:35
Speaker 1: a surrogate child. And again, at the end of this episode,
• 26:37
Speaker 1: fucking murders her mom. So it's like, well, full on plans.
• 26:41
Speaker 1: She took out her mom. Yeah. Full on. I what's the,
• 26:43
Speaker 1: isn't there, I'm trying to think there's like an animal
• 26:45
Speaker 1: that does that. It like kicks the fucking parent out
• 26:48
Speaker 1: of the nest. I guess it's the cuckoo bird, right?
• 26:50
Speaker 1: Like that's the, The cuckoo bird is the one that
• 26:52
Speaker 1: like lays its eggs and it's in another animal's nest
• 26:55
Speaker 1: or something like it's this fucking crazy. She's nothing else.
• 26:59
Speaker 1: Pamela is a cuckoo bird. Yeah, she's nuts. I mean,
• 27:01
Speaker 1: but at the same time, while you mentioned, yeah, the
• 27:05
Speaker 1: character of Grace's mom doesn't deserve to die because she's
• 27:10
Speaker 1: awful to her daughter. Pamela, again, like this is maybe
• 27:14
Speaker 1: the first time that's not a justified kill that we've seen.
• 27:18
Speaker 1: But she doesn't really know that. Again, it's still maybe
• 27:23
Speaker 1: overstepping the bounds, even if she's burning her. That's probably
• 27:26
  Speaker 1: a bit excessive.
• 27:27
Speaker 3: You just need to report her to the police and
• 27:29
Speaker 3: take her child away so she's not being abused anymore.
• 27:33
Speaker 3: But that's not how Pamela deals with things. But even then,
• 27:37
Speaker 3: you don't see her knowingly do that. She still thinks
• 27:41
Speaker 3: she's doing right. She thinks she's protecting, you know, Right.
• 27:45
Speaker 1: We as the audience are the ones we.
• 27:48
Speaker 3: Then see the other version of it and like, oh, no,
• 27:50
Speaker 3: she's just being a weirdo teenager and like doing self-harm.
• 27:54
Speaker 1: And that's not cool either. But also, you just got
• 27:57
Speaker 1: your mom killed. Way to go. Which I, you know,
• 28:02
Speaker 1: I asked you last episode about like, what is it
• 28:06
Speaker 1: trying to say? Like, what is the show trying to
• 28:08
Speaker 1: say about this? in this episode, like why are they
• 28:11
Speaker 1: giving us that complexity? Like what is, what is the
• 28:15
  Speaker 1: show getting at? And I, I'm, I don't, I don't,
• 28:19
  Speaker 1: it's not that I do or don't know. I think
• 28:21
Speaker 1: it's interesting that it's like, again, we have this unreliable narrator,
• 28:26
Speaker 1: main character. That is the, the lead. It's also a female. Again,
• 28:31
  Speaker 1: there's a female led shows and there's, and there's two
• 28:33
Speaker 1: female like leads in this show, which I really appreciate. Like, again,
• 28:36
Speaker 1: like one of my favorite shows is Westworld. That's, a
• 28:40
Speaker 1: show ostensibly led by a lot of two female leads.
• 28:44
  Speaker 1: And I, I appreciate a well-written female character. I don't
• 28:49
Speaker 1: know why they have not done it in film as
• 28:52
Speaker 1: well as they have in TV. Like we talk about like, well,
• 28:55
Speaker 1: you know, what, what is one of the things that
• 28:57
Speaker 1: you could describe TV that's important about TV? I think
• 29:00
Speaker 1: TV is really the, the place where female characters are
• 29:04
Speaker 1: well-written and, Yeah, I think most executives are just afraid.
• 29:08
Speaker 3: They're afraid to invest that much money in a female
• 29:11
Speaker 3: led project most of the time. Occasionally it happens, but
• 29:15
Speaker 3: it is rare compared to the tons of money they
• 29:19
Speaker 3: will invest in any dumb male led project.
• 29:23
Speaker 1: And there are plenty of them. So, yeah, I think
• 29:25
Speaker 1: they just they don't have faith in it. They don't.
• 29:29
Speaker 1: they will go out of their way to prove the
• 29:31
  Speaker 1: track record.
• 29:32
Speaker 3: And every time one fails, they hold it up as like, see,
• 29:35
Speaker 3: you can't put a woman as a lead in the movie.
• 29:37
Speaker 3: And so, yeah, I think they just the deck is
• 29:41
Speaker 3: stacked against you if you're an actress trying to make
• 29:43
  Speaker 3: a big budget movie but i guess there's a little
• 29:47
Speaker 3: lesson that's the thing the tv shows are really well
• 29:50
Speaker 3: made now so i don't know that the budget's as
• 29:53
Speaker 3: different than making a sizable mid-level movie anymore.
• 29:57
Speaker 1: But I think they're willing to take a little more
• 29:59
Speaker 1: chances in TV. And there's maybe a better response to
• 30:03
Speaker 1: the audiences as well. I think it's just the need
• 30:07
Speaker 1: for content, too. Like we talked about in the last episode,
• 30:10
Speaker 1: like the weird, you know, we talk about we talk
• 30:14
Speaker 1: about how like streaming changed everything. I would say like
• 30:16
Speaker 1: the comparative is streaming changed things the way CNN changed
• 30:23
Speaker 1: 24 hour news. Like being able to watch a movie whenever,
• 30:27
Speaker 1: wherever is so different from, I have to have a
• 30:31
Speaker 1: DVD player and I have to set it up and
• 30:33
Speaker 1: I have to have the DVD and edit it out.
• 30:34
Speaker 1: And they're like, I can just watch it on my
• 30:37
Speaker 1: phone in the airport while I'm waiting to get on
• 30:39
Speaker 1: the plane. The CNN of it all. That's fucking mind-blowing, right? Like,
• 30:44
Speaker 1: 24-hour news cycle, dude. The way news was reported on
• 30:49
Speaker 1: changed the moment you could get news at any time.
• 30:52
Speaker 1: Everything became news. Well, but it changed what you were doing, too.
• 30:54
Speaker 3: Because then it's like, if the news was only on
• 30:57
Speaker 3: at like 11 p.m., and they just told you they
• 31:00
Speaker 3: had a half hour, and it was packed with every
• 31:03
Speaker 3: big dumb thing that happened in the world today, and
• 31:05
Speaker 3: we got it out in 25 minutes with commercials, and
• 31:07
  Speaker 3: here we go.
• 31:08
  Speaker 1: Well, now it's on 24-7.
• 31:11
Speaker 3: After that 25 minutes worth of important stuff, they're filling the.
• 31:15
Speaker 1: Rest of the time.
• 31:17
  Speaker 3: So it's like, here's a human interest story and here's
• 31:21
Speaker 3: a restaurant opening. Like they just start going out to
• 31:24
Speaker 3: find anything at that point.
• 31:26
Speaker 1: All the news that's fit to print is just everything now.
• 31:30
Speaker 1: And I feel like.
• 31:30
Speaker 3: That's also what happened to the streaming content too, is like,
• 31:34
Speaker 3: we have to fill all Every hour, every streaming service,
• 31:39
Speaker 3: every platform out there has to have so much material.
• 31:43
Speaker 3: I mean, it's the same thing that happened when VHS
• 31:45
Speaker 3: came around. It's like they suddenly needed to put movies
• 31:49
Speaker 3: on VHS and they started producing these crappy straight to
• 31:53
Speaker 3: VHS movies that were made for a fraction of what
• 31:56
Speaker 3: they used to spend in theaters because they just needed
• 31:59
Speaker 3: to put titles out there. And this is like times
• 32:02
Speaker 3: 100 when you get to streaming, when there's.
• 32:04
Speaker 1: So many new options that came out, so many new places,
• 32:08
Speaker 1: and people were just waiting to watch whatever.
• 32:11
Speaker 3: And they weren't real discerning is the problem. So you
• 32:15
Speaker 3: did see a decline in the quality sometimes, but at
• 32:18
Speaker 3: the same time, you got a chance to make a
• 32:21
Speaker 3: lot more stuff. And so hopefully along the way, somebody
• 32:25
Speaker 3: will step up and make good things as well.
• 32:28
Speaker 1: I think when you have... the hose on all the time.
• 32:34
Speaker 1: And as, and, and, you know, here's the thing you
• 32:37
Speaker 1: have to remember, right? Like this, this thing, the confluence
• 32:40
Speaker 1: came around at the same, that the perfect time, because the,
• 32:43
Speaker 1: the amount of people with access to the internet with
• 32:47
Speaker 1: streaming made it where it's like the, the need for
• 32:50
Speaker 1: content is constant. I'm assuming, and you tell me if
• 32:52
Speaker 1: I'm wrong here, Brian, that people in the industry are
• 32:56
Speaker 1: assuming that people are watching shit 24 seven. 365. They
• 33:00
Speaker 1: have it on even when they're sleeping, maybe, because it
• 33:03
Speaker 1: comforts them in some way. And you know what? Am
• 33:06
Speaker 1: I wrong to say that that's the assumption? I mean,
• 33:09
Speaker 1: I'm one of those people, but that isn't even a
• 33:11
Speaker 1: streaming thing. So am I. Actually, I'm the opposite.
• 33:14
Speaker 3: I grew up on network and it was just on
• 33:18
Speaker 3: because I wanted it on. Again, it was comforting to
• 33:20
Speaker 3: my I can't stand the silence. I'll have to listen
• 33:23
Speaker 3: to the voices in my head. So you turn on
• 33:25
Speaker 3: some dumb thing in the background and it's just on.
• 33:27
Speaker 3: I'm not even paying attention half the time.
• 33:29
Speaker 1: Right. It's just on.
• 33:30
Speaker 3: But I don't do that with streaming because you have
• 33:33
Speaker 3: to pick a specific thing. And then again, I usually
• 33:36
Speaker 3: am watching movies. So like I want to then focus
• 33:39
Speaker 3: on this. If I start it, I want to sit
• 33:41
Speaker 3: down and watch it and pay attention. versus random crap
• 33:44
Speaker 3: just on network television in the background I don't pay
• 33:47
Speaker 3: attention to. Like occasionally there's good stuff. I'm not knocking it,
• 33:50
Speaker 3: but I'm like, I don't focus on it that way.
• 33:53
Speaker 3: And streaming makes me feel like I need to be
• 33:56
Speaker 3: watching the thing I.
• 33:57
Speaker 1: Just hit play on.
• 33:58
Speaker 3: So I don't treat streaming the same way. I specifically
• 34:02
Speaker 3: seek out things and sit down and watch them and
• 34:05
Speaker 3: then turn off the streaming when it's time to like
• 34:07
Speaker 3: go do other things. And I'll still have something on
• 34:09
Speaker 3: in the thing that I push play on and now
• 34:14
Speaker 3: need to be watching.
• 34:15
Speaker 1: So you're talking about active versus passive watching, which I
• 34:19
Speaker 1: think is like, you know, there are things that I
• 34:22
Speaker 1: can have on that I am interacting with no differently
• 34:26
Speaker 1: than some people interact with music. You have this on
• 34:29
Speaker 1: in the background while you're doing something else. I choose
• 34:30
Speaker 1: to have a movie or TV show on in the
• 34:32
Speaker 1: background because that's the soundtrack I want to have on.
• 34:36
Speaker 1: Because I appreciate being able to laugh along with it
• 34:39
Speaker 1: or quote it or whatever, you know, have it bring
• 34:41
Speaker 1: up something that I think about versus music, which not
• 34:44
Speaker 1: saying that doesn't do that for music for me as well.
• 34:47
Speaker 1: But there are some people that do not understand the
• 34:51
Speaker 1: first part of what I talked about. They only understand
• 34:53
Speaker 1: the music side of it, which I understand. But I
• 34:55
Speaker 1: feel like a lot of people do it like that now, too.
• 34:59
  Speaker 1: I think you're not alone.
• 35:00
Speaker 3: I think a lot of people have they pick a
• 35:02
Speaker 3: streaming thing that they like and it's just on a
• 35:04
  Speaker 3: loop now.
• 35:05
  Speaker 1: I think it's generational, too. Like, I don't know if
• 35:07
Speaker 1: people my my parents age do. My mom and dad
• 35:10
Speaker 1: have like news and stuff on in the background. So
• 35:13
Speaker 1: they are still having something on in the background. But
• 35:15
Speaker 1: like when I go to visit them, I will put
• 35:18
Speaker 1: on like my stuff and they're not fighting me on it.
• 35:22
Speaker 1: So they're at least like amenable to it, but I
• 35:24
Speaker 1: don't know if they would go. I mean, maybe they
• 35:27
  Speaker 1: do now. I think it's, I think it's weird. Like,
• 35:29
  Speaker 1: I think maybe if I didn't do what I do,
• 35:32
Speaker 1: they might not because their tastes would never kind of
• 35:36
Speaker 1: have seen some of the things that I've introduced them
• 35:38
Speaker 1: to that. I think maybe they wouldn't have watched otherwise.
• 35:41
Speaker 1: Cause I know that they were not watching YouTube, you know,
• 35:44
Speaker 1: and they've started, they, they have like a couple like
• 35:46
Speaker 1: YouTube channels that they watch. And I'm like really happy
• 35:49
Speaker 1: that they do. Cause not a lot of people their
• 35:50
  Speaker 1: age watch YouTube.
• 35:52
Speaker 3: No, that's what kids do nonstop. But yeah, even in
• 35:56
Speaker 3: the middle, a lot of times, not so much or
• 35:59
Speaker 3: only specific shows. But like the younger you get, the
• 36:02
Speaker 3: more it's just habit.
• 36:03
Speaker 1: Like that's what they do. Even people our age aren't
• 36:06
Speaker 1: super into YouTube. Like I feel like I came upon
• 36:09
Speaker 1: YouTube really late in the terms of like engaging with content.
• 36:14
  Speaker 1: Like I didn't have a favorite YouTuber in my 20s.
• 36:17
Speaker 1: Like I literally came to YouTube in my late 20s,
• 36:20
Speaker 1: early 30s. And it's weird to me because, again, like
• 36:24
Speaker 1: I think the way shows are made now and, you know,
• 36:30
Speaker 1: to come back to the original thing we were talking about,
• 36:32
Speaker 1: like the original kind of thesis of this entire question
• 36:35
Speaker 1: is why is a why are female leads better on
• 36:41
Speaker 1: TV than in movies? Because I think there's just the
• 36:44
Speaker 1: need is constant. And because you have so much all
• 36:47
Speaker 1: the time, you are going to get good things more often.
• 36:52
Speaker 1: because you a new TV show can literally come out
• 36:55
Speaker 1: every day just and now a new movie can come
• 36:57
Speaker 1: out every day too which is great like I love
• 37:02
Speaker 1: that about movies and TV like I love that we
• 37:04
Speaker 1: can get them at any point you don't have to
• 37:06
Speaker 1: be able to just like you don't have to just
• 37:08
Speaker 1: go to the movie theater anymore to see a movie
• 37:10
Speaker 1: and that is a really I know for a lot
• 37:13
Speaker 1: of people that me saying that might really be irksome
• 37:16
Speaker 1: to them but that's a really positive thing too for
• 37:19
Speaker 1: the ability of people to be able to watch movies
• 37:22
Speaker 1: and enjoy them. And actually it's been like that for
• 37:25
Speaker 1: a long time, but like it's, it's still ever increasingly changing.
• 37:33
Speaker 1: And it's, but just when we think it gets to
• 37:36
Speaker 1: the point that like, Oh, the movies are dying. Nobody
• 37:39
Speaker 1: goes anymore. You, I mean, this year is proven. That's
• 37:42
  Speaker 1: not true.
• 37:43
Speaker 3: This is like the biggest, we've had some of the
• 37:45
Speaker 3: biggest movie openings ever in history period.
• 37:49
Speaker 1: And it was all this year.
• 37:51
Speaker 3: So it's like, it's now more of like appointment movies.
• 37:54
Speaker 3: Like there's a movie that will hit and it will
• 37:57
Speaker 3: make people leave the house. And that's something that quit
• 38:01
Speaker 3: happening for a long time there. So it's like, you're
• 38:04
Speaker 3: still getting those little spikes of specific movies that like
• 38:07
Speaker 3: kind of take over the pop culture for a couple
• 38:10
Speaker 3: of weeks. And then it goes back. But like the
• 38:13
Speaker 3: streaming of it all is constant. And like they're still
• 38:16
Speaker 3: at home. watching those shows. They're still on YouTube watching
• 38:20
Speaker 3: what they want to watch night and day. And they're
• 38:23
Speaker 3: still finding new shows on streaming that they're, you know,
• 38:26
Speaker 3: are a regular constant thing. So it's like, I think
• 38:30
Speaker 3: they can still coexist. I think you could still have
• 38:33
Speaker 3: a big movie following, but it's not the way it
• 38:37
  Speaker 3: used to be.
• 38:37
Speaker 1: It's not like that. Cause I mean, movies used to
• 38:39
  Speaker 1: rule everything.
• 38:40
Speaker 3: Like everything was built around the big movies coming out
• 38:43
Speaker 3: and TV was so just looked down upon by the
• 38:46
  Speaker 3: entire industry.
• 38:47
Speaker 1: And then they leveled out.
• 38:49
Speaker 3: And now it's the point where TV or streaming versions
• 38:53
Speaker 3: of it is the norm. And the occasional thing that
• 38:56
Speaker 3: takes off is a big movie, but it's, yeah, it
• 38:59
Speaker 3: seems like it's, it's all kind of continually changed as
• 39:03
Speaker 3: the years have gone on.
• 39:05
Speaker 1: And I wonder when you make a movie now, if
• 39:07
Speaker 1: you're not looking at it as like, well, what am
• 39:10
Speaker 1: I competing with? Am I competing with other movies, or
• 39:12
Speaker 1: am I literally competing with fucking everything? And my assumption
• 39:17
Speaker 1: is they're competing with everything now, which is why, again,
• 39:21
Speaker 1: why every IP ever is being done something with, why
• 39:27
Speaker 1: everything that has ever been popular at any point is
• 39:29
Speaker 1: being done with. reappraised or turned into something else, because
• 39:32
Speaker 1: anybody and everybody's trying to make just that little bit
• 39:36
Speaker 1: more movement of something that has already been done before
• 39:39
Speaker 1: and successful and hopefully make money. And sometimes you hit
• 39:44
Speaker 1: upon something like this, which has a built-in audience, which
• 39:47
Speaker 1: has a built-in genre that people are very into, which
• 39:51
Speaker 1: has the A24 of it all. And then again, to
• 39:53
Speaker 1: put Linda Cardinelli, who I think has had a lot
• 39:57
Speaker 1: of goodwill in the industry. She was in to talk
• 40:01
Speaker 1: about something I just got done re-watching, which maybe the
• 40:05
Speaker 1: less said about it, the better, but those Conjuring movies. Uh,
• 40:09
Speaker 1: she's in one of the lesser, lesser, lesser conjuring movies.
• 40:12
Speaker 1: And the only reason I had any reason to watch
• 40:15
Speaker 1: it is cause she's in it. Literally the curse of
• 40:18
Speaker 1: La Llorona is really not great. Like it's kind of
• 40:23
Speaker 1: middle of the road, if best, like it's a lesser
• 40:28
Speaker 1: conjuring movie, which is to say it's like in the
• 40:32
Speaker 1: bottom third of those, which is like not very, that's
• 40:36
Speaker 1: not many of those movies other than the conjuring movies
• 40:39
Speaker 1: are down there. Like a lot of the nun and
• 40:41
Speaker 1: Annabelle movies are taking up those spots.
• 40:45
Speaker 3: Well, when you're competing with the peak of her career,
• 40:48
Speaker 3: which is obviously Scooby-Doo.
• 40:50
Speaker 1: I mean it's hard yeah yeah i guess for some
• 40:54
Speaker 1: people i mean that's when i think of linda cardinelli
• 40:57
Speaker 1: that's what i think of genuinely i mean.
• 40:59
Speaker 3: It's one of my favorite things she's in like she's
• 41:02
Speaker 3: really good like it's that was a weird cast that
• 41:06
Speaker 3: shouldn't have worked as well as it did but they
• 41:09
Speaker 3: all were kind of perfectly cast and it clicked and
• 41:13
Speaker 3: like it cheesy as those movies are like they still
• 41:17
Speaker 3: like I think it was such a big nostalgia factor
• 41:21
Speaker 3: for those kids that grew up at that time and
• 41:23
Speaker 3: then they've shown it to their kids as they've gotten
• 41:25
Speaker 3: older so like it's still I mean if you go
• 41:29
Speaker 3: to a convention you will see a line wrapped around
• 41:31
Speaker 3: the building for Matthew Lillard and it's all little kids
• 41:34
  Speaker 3: holding Scooby-Doo stuff so it's like it's, it's continued on
• 41:39
Speaker 3: like the, the following that, that has for that specific
• 41:42
Speaker 3: cast for that run of movies there. It's like, it's
• 41:46
Speaker 3: surprising how much that has hung on over the years.
• 41:49
Speaker 3: So I, I still go to that as one of
• 41:51
Speaker 3: my favorites for her.
• 41:52
Speaker 1: I love that movie. I love Matthew Lillard in that movie.
• 41:56
  Speaker 1: I mean, I love everything about that movie. I don't know. I,
• 41:59
Speaker 1: you know, I think for me, when people ask me like,
• 42:01
  Speaker 1: what's your favorite James Gunn thing? I'm like, It's Scooby-Doo.
• 42:06
Speaker 1: I think it's the thing where I interacted with it
• 42:09
Speaker 1: in a way that felt... I don't know. It was
• 42:13
Speaker 1: one of those things where when I watched Scooby-Doo the movie,
• 42:17
  Speaker 1: I didn't really see Scooby-Doo the cartoon. I just see
• 42:20
Speaker 1: Scooby-Doo the movie. And Scooby-Doo the movie is its own thing.
• 42:23
Speaker 1: And it will always be its own thing. And that's
• 42:24
Speaker 1: hard to do, yeah. Right.
• 42:25
Speaker 3: Because the show was so iconic in the animated form
• 42:29
Speaker 3: that you wouldn't think any of the live action stuff
• 42:31
  Speaker 3: could compare.
• 42:32
Speaker 1: Yeah. Casey Kasem and all that, that's so iconic in
• 42:35
Speaker 1: and of its own right. It made it so iconic that,
• 42:39
Speaker 1: like you said, Matthew Lillard, did the voice for Scooby-Doo
• 42:43
  Speaker 1: in a Scooby-Doo cartoon. And I think it's like the
• 42:45
Speaker 1: de facto voice for Shaggy. I think, I believe, like
• 42:49
Speaker 1: I believe. At this point, why wouldn't he be? Yeah. Yeah.
• 42:52
Speaker 1: And I don't know if you've seen Looney Tunes back
• 42:55
Speaker 1: in action, but there is a very funny scene in
• 42:57
Speaker 1: that movie with three different Shaggies. I did. Live action
• 43:01
Speaker 1: Shaggy voiced by Casey Kasem Shaggy and then voiced by
• 43:05
Speaker 1: Matthew Lillard Shaggy all in the same scene, I believe
• 43:08
Speaker 1: is what it is.
• 43:09
Speaker 3: Isn't that them in the restaurant and the animated... Shaggy
• 43:12
Speaker 3: is kind of like critiquing.
• 43:14
Speaker 1: Yeah. The Casey case of one. Yeah. Yeah. It's very funny.
• 43:18
Speaker 1: And it's, again, it's like very meta and it's in
• 43:21
Speaker 1: the right movie for that, for that kind of joke. Uh,
• 43:25
Speaker 1: and anytime I say that, I always want to say,
• 43:26
Speaker 1: and it's a very serious joke by Stanley. It's not a,
• 43:30
Speaker 1: it's not a serious joke, but it's one of those
• 43:31
Speaker 1: things where like, you have to know all of the things.
• 43:34
Speaker 1: You have to be that level of geek to fully
• 43:38
Speaker 1: get it. Yeah. And that's again, like, When we talk
• 43:42
Speaker 1: about making a show that works well and is understanding
• 43:48
Speaker 1: of the people who are watching it, this, I think,
• 43:51
Speaker 1: show understands that when you're watching a show about Friday
• 43:54
Speaker 1: the 13th, you want to see Pamela Voorhees unhinged, which
• 43:59
Speaker 1: we see. You want to see Jason doing something, maybe,
• 44:06
Speaker 1: But maybe other than that, like, I don't know what
• 44:08
Speaker 1: other boxes need to be checked. And what's so interesting
• 44:11
Speaker 1: is they just kind of are doing whatever they want.
• 44:14
Speaker 1: And again, what, what they're doing is not really that
• 44:19
Speaker 1: new and original. It's like, again, it's riffing on other stuff,
• 44:23
Speaker 1: but the stuff that it's riffing on is really successful. So,
• 44:27
Speaker 1: you know, like if you're going to riff on stuff,
• 44:29
Speaker 1: you might as well riff on stranger things, you know,
• 44:31
Speaker 1: like you fucking worse things to riff on, I guess.
• 44:35
Speaker 3: Well, it's also doing a nice little like portrait of
• 44:38
Speaker 3: a small town because this is the episode. We also
• 44:41
Speaker 3: get the bunch of drunken idiots that are going to
• 44:44
Speaker 3: go out and shoot a bear.
• 44:45
Speaker 1: Very jaws of it all. Once again, like the assholes
• 44:48
Speaker 1: with the fucking roast and all that. Like, this is
• 44:50
Speaker 1: my wife's roast. Like, she's going to kill me. Like, yeah,
• 44:54
Speaker 1: like I love that. I love or again, like to
• 44:57
Speaker 1: speak to fucking Stranger Things did that. What is that
• 44:59
Speaker 1: season four that they were doing that where they were
• 45:01
Speaker 1: having the kids running around like chasing after People and
• 45:05
Speaker 1: trying to like, oh, they're what are they called? The
• 45:09
Speaker 1: Hellfire Club, that whole thing. It's like they're trying to. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's,
• 45:13
Speaker 1: you know, again, they have a little bit of that. Like,
• 45:16
Speaker 1: you know, they're wearing their influences very openly on their sleeve,
• 45:21
Speaker 1: which again, like you could do worse than imitating shows
• 45:25
Speaker 1: that are very successful.
• 45:28
Speaker 3: But I also like they're such idiots that they end
• 45:31
Speaker 3: up shooting each other while they're out there.
• 45:34
Speaker 1: Well, I mean, who knows who shot again? He's claiming
• 45:37
Speaker 1: he saw Jason. Well, he and he did basically. I
• 45:42
Speaker 1: was tubing. I don't know what he saw.
• 45:43
Speaker 3: I think it's the other idiot that was with him
• 45:45
Speaker 3: that shot thinking he saw Jason.
• 45:48
Speaker 1: Like, I think the guy that gets shot actually.
• 45:50
Speaker 3: Saw Jason because we see him come over out of
• 45:53
  Speaker 3: the woods.
• 45:54
Speaker 1: But the other idiot like.
• 45:57
Speaker 3: A hundred yards away thought he saw Jason and it
• 45:59
  Speaker 3: was that.
• 45:59
Speaker 1: Guy and shot him. Was the way I read it.
• 46:03
Speaker 1: But who really knows? No, I think you know. I
• 46:05
Speaker 1: think it's in the woods. Yeah, I think you're right.
• 46:07
Speaker 1: Which makes it even funnier. Yeah. So it was just him.
• 46:10
Speaker 3: But that guy did like because we see him kind
• 46:13
Speaker 3: of see it before he gets hit.
• 46:14
Speaker 1: He sees something in the woods over there. And then
• 46:17
Speaker 1: once he's down, you see.
• 46:19
Speaker 3: Like the image of this weird creepy kid come stand
• 46:22
Speaker 3: over him and just kind of look at him and
• 46:23
Speaker 3: be like, the hell are you doing you drunken idiot
• 46:26
Speaker 3: so that's again toying with the jason of it all
• 46:30
Speaker 3: of like is is he out there and yeah kind
• 46:32
Speaker 3: of because he's standing there so what what's going on
• 46:35
Speaker 3: and is he did he drowned is this the not
• 46:39
Speaker 3: drowned version of him he is this is the raised
• 46:42
Speaker 3: from the dead because it's a magical lake version of
• 46:45
Speaker 3: him wait like we don't know like it's just sort
• 46:47
Speaker 3: of toying with that at this point.
• 46:49
Speaker 1: The question is maybe not what he is, but when,
• 46:53
Speaker 1: I mean like, you know, I don't know what or
• 46:56
Speaker 1: how time works in this show. Like all of a
• 46:59
Speaker 1: sudden the person that's standing over this guy is like
• 47:01
Speaker 1: a grown man. That's what it looks like. Like, it's like,
• 47:04
Speaker 1: it's not a child. And Jason is a straight up
• 47:06
Speaker 1: child in the show. Like as we've seen him up
• 47:09
Speaker 1: until this point, he's literally like, like what, like a
• 47:12
Speaker 1: 10 year old, 12 year old, maybe like 11, maybe
• 47:15
Speaker 1: something like that. He's like a young, like a young teenager.
• 47:19
Speaker 1: So it's like, okay, like it, What we see standing
• 47:23
Speaker 1: over this guy is like a fucking adult. Like it's
• 47:25
Speaker 1: a straight up man standing over him. In what looks
• 47:28
Speaker 1: like that outfit that he's wearing in the one where
• 47:32
Speaker 1: the actor who has the greatest name of a stuntman ever,
• 47:35
Speaker 1: Dick Warlock, plays him where it's like the weird like
• 47:40
Speaker 1: gray jacket suit thing. You know what I'm talking about?
• 47:44
Speaker 1: It looks like he's wearing that, which again is like
• 47:46
Speaker 1: a callback to one of the movies. So.
• 47:49
  Speaker 3: I mean, maybe, as we've said, we don't know what's
• 47:52
Speaker 3: going on in the lake and or woods. So maybe
• 47:55
Speaker 3: the woods just is a portal to other time and space.
• 47:59
Speaker 3: And you've got future Jason showing up to come back
• 48:01
Speaker 3: in time and murder people because he can.
• 48:04
Speaker 1: Right. Like I wouldn't put it past this show, given
• 48:06
Speaker 1: that there's some sort of like, again, the argonaut of
• 48:10
Speaker 1: it all has not been explained yet, which not so far. No,
• 48:14
  Speaker 1: which I don't I genuinely don't know what what do
• 48:19
Speaker 1: what is your take? Like, what do you think it's
• 48:22
Speaker 1: going to be? Because like we're at a point now
• 48:23
Speaker 1: where it hasn't been answered yet. And the next time
• 48:26
Speaker 1: we do an episode, there is a moment or a
• 48:28
Speaker 1: possibility that that is explained. So what is it? What
• 48:32
Speaker 1: do you like? Let's let's kind of go back and
• 48:35
Speaker 1: forth here and let's see which one of us ends
• 48:36
Speaker 1: up being closer. But like, what do you think it's
• 48:39
  Speaker 1: getting at?
• 48:40
Speaker 3: I mean, even at the first mention of it in
• 48:43
Speaker 3: that promo, that's what I thought.
• 48:45
Speaker 1: That's why we're watching this show, right? Pretty much, because
• 48:48
Speaker 1: I saw that and went, oh, I don't know what...
• 48:50
  Speaker 1: Because if.
• 48:51
Speaker 3: It were just like, here's a flashback, here's the backstory
• 48:55
Speaker 3: of Jason, and we tell mom losing it, going crazy,
• 48:59
Speaker 3: and this is how Jason ends up in the woods, blah, blah,
• 49:01
Speaker 3: that's how we get to the movies.
• 49:02
  Speaker 1: If it's just a straight... A to B, here's the prequel.
• 49:07
Speaker 1: This is what we're doing.
• 49:08
Speaker 3: Then I, again, it might be fine, but I don't
• 49:10
Speaker 3: think it was going to do anything interesting. So it
• 49:12
Speaker 3: was still questionable whether we would have done this. We
• 49:15
Speaker 3: got to that moment and I was like, okay, that's
• 49:17
  Speaker 3: something weird.
• 49:19
Speaker 1: And they're good. at least play with that. I don't
• 49:22
  Speaker 1: know fully if.
• 49:23
Speaker 3: They're going to explain it or not. But to me
• 49:25
Speaker 3: at that point, I was like, this seems like, and
• 49:28
Speaker 3: I think I said this last episode, this is like
• 49:30
Speaker 3: a government project that this is a toying with people. And,
• 49:36
Speaker 3: and once again, we've got a very sh me of
• 49:39
Speaker 3: it all because there's no father. She she's specifically like,
• 49:44
Speaker 3: I'm not married. Like, so we've never had a mention
• 49:47
Speaker 3: of a father, right? So like, as far as we know,
• 49:51
Speaker 3: he was just created by the force for some shit.
• 49:55
  Speaker 1: Who knows?
• 49:55
Speaker 3: But like, literally like it's, it's that same scenario of like,
• 49:59
Speaker 3: there's no mom or dad. It's just mom is taken
• 50:03
Speaker 3: to this facility. They're doing experiments on her in the process.
• 50:07
Speaker 3: Maybe the whole reason they're doing experiments is to create
• 50:10
Speaker 3: this kid. It goes maybe horribly wrong. And that's like
• 50:15
Speaker 3: the reason he is the way he is or maybe right.
• 50:17
Speaker 3: And that's the reason he is. And like the side
• 50:20
Speaker 3: effects of him having whatever he has also gives them
• 50:24
Speaker 3: some sort of powers that we haven't fully had explained
• 50:27
  Speaker 3: to us yet.
• 50:27
Speaker 1: And I'm sure we will see some version of.
• 50:30
Speaker 3: And then from that point on, it's them probably trying
• 50:33
Speaker 3: to use him to make money, create weaponry, whatever the
• 50:37
Speaker 3: government does, which is always those kind of things. And
• 50:40
Speaker 3: then she realizes that's what they're doing and takes her
• 50:43
Speaker 3: kid and runs. And that's why she's been on the
• 50:45
Speaker 3: run all these years and created this new identity and
• 50:48
Speaker 3: went to go hang out in the middle of the
• 50:50
Speaker 3: woods and not really engage with people for the most part,
• 50:53
Speaker 3: because this is who she's hiding from.
• 50:56
Speaker 1: And the term Argonaut means an adventurer. on a dangerous
• 51:02
Speaker 1: or ambitious quest. So it's like, it's a very specific, intentional,
• 51:05
Speaker 1: like choice of a, of a, uh, you know, of
• 51:08
Speaker 1: a name. And obviously, you know, Jason and the Argonauts, Hardy, har, har.
• 51:12
Speaker 1: I mean, again, like the, I got the joke as
• 51:15
Speaker 1: I'm sure you did like, do you like, Never heard
• 51:19
Speaker 1: of it. Right. Like, it's a very funny joke. And again,
• 51:23
Speaker 1: you know, it's not explained as of yet. But, you know,
• 51:27
Speaker 1: even by the end of the fourth episode, like we
• 51:29
Speaker 1: don't even have it really addressed by the end of
• 51:31
Speaker 1: the fourth episode. Like the fourth episode is confirming to
• 51:36
Speaker 1: us that there is the world of the supernatural in
• 51:40
Speaker 1: Friday the 13th. Which we've gotten to before. But this
• 51:45
Speaker 1: is like the most explicit. But I mean, it takes
• 51:49
Speaker 1: them a long time.
• 51:51
Speaker 3: It's like, again, not really until like six, he's rising
• 51:56
Speaker 3: from the dead. By seven, you have people using psychic
• 52:00
Speaker 3: powers to fight against him. So I mean, like we
• 52:02
Speaker 3: definitely have a lot of that stuff in the franchise overall,
• 52:07
Speaker 3: but it takes them that far in before it totally
• 52:11
Speaker 3: leaves the... for the most part, he was just like
• 52:14
Speaker 3: a killer in the woods. Maybe there was some weird
• 52:18
Speaker 3: reason he was still alive and it was supernatural. For
• 52:20
Speaker 3: the most part, he just hit you with a machete
• 52:22
Speaker 3: and killed you the same way any.
• 52:23
Speaker 1: Other human did. Well, one of the movies, it's not
• 52:25
Speaker 1: even Jason. It's a dude pretending to be Jason. Well,
• 52:28
Speaker 1: that's my point. Like, they're even trying to explain how
• 52:31
Speaker 1: Jason doesn't die because technically he wasn't like Jason. It's like, oh, okay.
• 52:36
Speaker 1: So like, we even have to have a meta in
• 52:37
Speaker 1: universe explanation why Jason doesn't die, die. Like, I don't,
• 52:42
Speaker 1: you know, it could literally be he's a fucking time
• 52:45
Speaker 1: traveler in the show. I wouldn't be surprised. It would
• 52:47
Speaker 1: be pretty entertaining if that's the case. Yeah, I don't
• 52:50
Speaker 1: want this show to be necessarily serious. You know, we
• 52:53
Speaker 1: didn't mention it in the last episode, but I guess,
• 52:56
Speaker 1: I guess it, is it, I guess it is this
• 52:59
Speaker 1: episode where it's the communist agitator, Martin Luther King. What
• 53:05
Speaker 1: the fuck? What the hell joke is this show making?
• 53:08
Speaker 1: I mean, that's the world we were and maybe are
• 53:11
Speaker 1: still living in. Yeah, I love it. you know, what's
• 53:14
Speaker 1: funny is it's 1970, but it doesn't feel any different
• 53:17
Speaker 1: than the time now. Like, Oh, look at these, look
• 53:19
Speaker 1: at these fucking hippies being dumb. Like let's kill the hippies.
• 53:22
Speaker 1: You know, like all the, again, like, Oh, the other
• 53:25
Speaker 1: ring of all these people. And like Jason ultimately really
• 53:28
Speaker 1: is the story, ultimate story of the other ring of like,
• 53:31
Speaker 1: you know, a child who didn't deserve to be othered
• 53:34
Speaker 1: at all. And so he's taking his revenge on the
• 53:36
Speaker 1: town that othered him. And that's the thing. Like it's, I,
• 53:41
Speaker 1: I know that this is, the gentleman who did it, right?
• 53:46
Speaker 1: When it's like, that sounds infested by Pennywise. What if
• 53:49
Speaker 1: this is just this, what if the entire like thesis
• 53:52
Speaker 1: with this show is, and follow me here, it's like
• 53:56
Speaker 1: inverse Pennywise. Like Pennywise isn't killing children in the town
• 54:01
Speaker 1: just because he wants to. Like, what if Jason is
• 54:03
Speaker 1: just killing the town because the town is a bunch
• 54:05
Speaker 1: of shitheads that don't respect the fact that he just drowned?
• 54:09
Speaker 1: I mean, he's not wrong. Not in remotely any capacity
• 54:14
Speaker 1: is he wrong. And it's like, I wonder if partially
• 54:16
Speaker 1: that's what the show is kind of getting at, which I'm, yeah,
• 54:19
Speaker 1: like I totally am here for. as a watcher of
• 54:23
Speaker 1: this show, because like I think it's it's speaking to
• 54:26
Speaker 1: something that is not present in the original movies, which
• 54:32
Speaker 1: is like How do we address Jason as a character
• 54:35
Speaker 1: and why he's doing what he's doing and what his
• 54:37
Speaker 1: motivations are? And giving Jason some real tangible motivation, not
• 54:43
Speaker 1: a thing up until this point. In Jason X, it's like, oh,
• 54:46
Speaker 1: they kind of woke him up and pissed him off.
• 54:48
Speaker 1: All these other ones, it's like, what is he doing
• 54:50
Speaker 1: and why? He just seemingly is not really doing anything
• 54:55
Speaker 1: for any reason whatsoever. other than just because he can.
• 54:58
Speaker 1: And it's like, I'm not saying that's bad. The, you know,
• 55:02
Speaker 1: the immovable force meets the immense, the immovable object. It's like, okay, great.
• 55:06
Speaker 1: Like I don't necessarily always have to have a reason
• 55:08
Speaker 1: why these two are banging into each other, but if
• 55:11
Speaker 1: you want to give me one and it's makes this
• 55:14
Speaker 1: more interesting, I'm, I'm going to appreciate that as someone
• 55:17
Speaker 1: watching your show. And I think they really have, like,
• 55:20
Speaker 1: I think wherever they go with Jason, um, the Argonaut
• 55:25
Speaker 1: stuff or not, like they've set it up where Jason
• 55:27
Speaker 1: is justifiably upset at more or less everyone in the town.
• 55:32
Speaker 1: And it would also seem like there's some Lynchian inspiration
• 55:36
Speaker 1: of like everyone in the town has something to hide
• 55:39
Speaker 1: or something fucked up about them or they're doing something
• 55:42
Speaker 1: stupid or they're involved in weird shit. And I couldn't
• 55:45
Speaker 1: help but think of like the weird idiosyncrasies of the
• 55:47
Speaker 1: town of Twin Peaks when watching this show. Because again,
• 55:51
Speaker 1: like it seems like Again, it's coming kind of inspired
• 55:55
Speaker 1: by a lot of things that have come out in
• 55:56
Speaker 1: the last 20, 30 years since the first Friday the
• 56:00
  Speaker 1: 13th came out.
• 56:03
Speaker 3: While we're coming up with crazy theories, so you went
• 56:05
Speaker 3: down the Argonaut Road. The other thing they've got, the
• 56:09
Speaker 3: card that they have is subsun solutions. So subsun is
• 56:14
Speaker 3: a rare atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as a bright
• 56:18
Speaker 3: glowing spot directly below the actual sun. What if Jason
• 56:22
  Speaker 3: is from space?
• 56:23
Speaker 1: I mean, again, like an alien. That's why he went
• 56:27
Speaker 1: back as Jason X, because he's from space. Good God.
• 56:31
Speaker 1: What if he's like one of those like alien children
• 56:33
Speaker 1: from the X-Files? They're not aliens. They just said, what
• 56:36
Speaker 1: is it like the measles or something? I forget what
• 56:38
Speaker 1: the fuck is smallpox. I forget what it is, but
• 56:40
Speaker 1: they're like, we treated them and they just became like aliens. Like, no,
• 56:42
Speaker 1: they're fucking aliens. Like, knock it off. So this, this, this.
• 56:47
Speaker 3: Alien group of people realized that earthlings suck. So they're
• 56:51
Speaker 3: going to send this guy down to start taking them.
• 56:53
Speaker 1: Out one at a time.
• 56:55
  Speaker 3: It's a slow plan, but it's a plan nonetheless.
• 56:58
Speaker 1: I mean, look, American horror story had aliens and, uh,
• 57:01
Speaker 1: you know, it, it didn't, it didn't hurt that series.
• 57:06
Speaker 1: I just don't think they ever did anything really substantive
• 57:09
  Speaker 1: with it.
• 57:09
Speaker 3: Again, I'm being kind of ridiculous, but at the same time,
• 57:12
Speaker 3: if they went down that road at this point, it's so.
• 57:15
Speaker 1: Crazy and over the top, I'd be like, well, points
• 57:17
Speaker 1: for originality. The Argonaut question feels like a sci-fi thing
• 57:22
Speaker 1: because Stranger Things is sci-fi, like Stranger Things is sci-fi
• 57:26
Speaker 1: and horror and like fantasy, I guess. And the sci-fi
• 57:31
Speaker 1: of it all is like all the stuff at the
• 57:33
Speaker 1: Hawkins lab. And they're hinting at like, there is something
• 57:35
Speaker 1: of that or adjacency in this show. So like, yeah,
• 57:38
  Speaker 1: I don't, I don't think that we're that far off
• 57:42
Speaker 1: because the paranoia seventies aspect of this show is intentional.
• 57:46
Speaker 1: Like it's not, we're not grasping at straws. Like the
• 57:50
Speaker 1: show is doing that intentionally. Like I think there's a
• 57:54
Speaker 1: high possibility. We might be right about at least some
• 57:57
Speaker 1: of what we've joked about, because again, like, I don't
• 58:01
Speaker 1: know why they would have shown the things that they've
• 58:02
Speaker 1: shown if there's not some kind of grand, weird thing
• 58:07
Speaker 1: at play here. That, again, maybe it's just an accident
• 58:10
Speaker 1: that someone like Jason, because his mom and him went
• 58:14
Speaker 1: on the run, that he... happened to drown in the
• 58:17
Speaker 1: wrong lake. You know, I, I, I could see that
• 58:20
Speaker 1: being just like, again, like the kind of darkly comedic
• 58:23
Speaker 1: aspect of the movie, right? Like, oops, like the, the,
• 58:25
Speaker 1: what happens if a super soldier drowns in a lake
• 58:28
Speaker 1: that reincarnates you as a zombie? Like, I don't know,
• 58:32
Speaker 1: but we're going to get an answer to it. Maybe
• 58:34
  Speaker 1: that's the thing.
• 58:35
Speaker 3: It also like, as much as they never really explain
• 58:38
Speaker 3: what's going on with Jason or why he does what
• 58:41
Speaker 3: he does, the one thing we know is that like,
• 58:45
Speaker 3: he's damn near indestructible so much so that again, they're trying.
• 58:49
Speaker 1: To replicate him in the future.
• 58:52
Speaker 3: So it's like that if you're, if you're creating something
• 58:56
Speaker 3: like this and you know, that's your end point, you
• 58:59
Speaker 3: could certainly tie that in, like go back and make, well, this.
• 59:02
Speaker 1: Is our overall arc that we're heading towards. So yeah.
• 59:05
Speaker 3: Why not work this in as our, as our beginning
• 59:08
Speaker 3: point too. And like, it's, just a slow in between
• 59:11
Speaker 3: version in the middle where he's just murdering kids in
• 59:13
Speaker 3: the woods versus where it started and eventually ends up
• 59:17
  Speaker 3: so I again I don't think that's that.
• 59:19
Speaker 1: Far off I wouldn't say any of this is outside
• 59:23
Speaker 1: the realm of possibility if they hadn't shown a literal
• 59:26
Speaker 1: like laboratory door. And the fact that she's running from
• 59:30
Speaker 1: someone who's very serious because they sent dudes to murder her.
• 59:34
Speaker 3: So obviously it's something because they wouldn't have sent people after.
• 59:39
Speaker 3: She wouldn't have to be hiding and changing her name
• 59:41
Speaker 3: if it was just. you know she got a sperm
• 59:44
  Speaker 3: donor or.
• 59:45
Speaker 1: Something if it was normal like she'd just go move
• 59:48
Speaker 1: to a city and get a job but like she's
• 59:50
Speaker 1: been hiding the entirety of jason's life so obviously it's
• 59:54
Speaker 1: something going on which again like i i love that
• 59:59
Speaker 1: we have more to the jason character than you know
• 1:00:02
Speaker 1: like that's the thing with like freddy krueger that we
• 1:00:04
Speaker 1: didn't talk about in the last episode like Freddy Krueger
• 1:00:06
Speaker 1: has a very narrow runway. He is a child molester. Like,
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: and that was the thing that that 2000 and more murderer, whatever,
• 1:00:14
Speaker 1: just murdered him in the old wind, only in the
• 1:00:17
Speaker 1: two thousands when he's also, but they, they could have
• 1:00:20
Speaker 1: done something interesting with it where they have him not
• 1:00:23
Speaker 1: actually be the killer, like him, not actually being like,
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: The molester, like they are wrongfully accusing him and that's
• 1:00:31
Speaker 1: not the case and do something different with it and
• 1:00:33
Speaker 1: make him a nuanced character. And they didn't want to
• 1:00:35
Speaker 1: do that for whatever reason, because they felt like they
• 1:00:37
Speaker 1: had to do exactly what the original did. And I'm
• 1:00:40
Speaker 1: so glad that there's none of that here. that there's
• 1:00:44
Speaker 1: none of this, like, we have to make sure that
• 1:00:46
Speaker 1: we're doing what the original did. Like, nope, we're going
• 1:00:49
Speaker 1: to do our own thing. Is Jason a fucking sci-fi
• 1:00:52
Speaker 1: super soldier? Like, you know what? He very well might be.
• 1:00:55
Speaker 1: And you know what? I would not have believed that
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: this show would do that, but here we are. And
• 1:01:01
Speaker 1: if they go there, and I would assume there's some
• 1:01:05
Speaker 1: reality to that, I would love to hear what the
• 1:01:08
Speaker 1: fans of Friday the 13th have to say. Because if
• 1:01:10
Speaker 1: they're pissed off, Have you seen your franchise where, like
• 1:01:14
Speaker 1: you said, they literally go to fucking space? Not kind
• 1:01:19
Speaker 1: of space. They literally go to fucking space.
• 1:01:23
Speaker 3: Yes, that one takes a lot of heat for the
• 1:01:25
Speaker 3: silliness of it. But also, in the one you referenced
• 1:01:28
Speaker 3: last episode, he's also hijacked while he's dreaming by Freddy
• 1:01:34
Speaker 3: Krueger in another movie.
• 1:01:36
Speaker 1: Which is meant to be canon, by the way. Literally
• 1:01:39
Speaker 1: meant to be fucking canon, because they spend, I don't know,
• 1:01:42
Speaker 1: 30 minutes of that movie trying to be like, and
• 1:01:45
Speaker 1: this is how this works, and let's explain this. Just
• 1:01:50
Speaker 1: make the movie good. Can you do that? And I'm
• 1:01:52
Speaker 1: not saying Freddy vs. Jason is not good. I think
• 1:01:54
Speaker 1: Freddy vs. Jason is a more than competent romp, but
• 1:01:58
Speaker 1: it is... it spends a lot of time explaining rules
• 1:02:02
Speaker 1: where it's just like, just get to the fucking Freddie
• 1:02:03
Speaker 1: and Jason of it all. We got it. It's a
• 1:02:05
Speaker 1: comic book crossover issue. We know just move on with
• 1:02:08
Speaker 1: the story. Did you know that there was a temple
• 1:02:10
Speaker 1: under the ice and let's explain, shut the fuck up.
• 1:02:12
Speaker 1: We don't care. Don't fucking matter. Quit explaining shit. Like,
• 1:02:18
Speaker 1: fuck off. Like it's this, you know what? And I
• 1:02:21
Speaker 1: think it's so funny. Like so much of this, like
• 1:02:24
Speaker 1: we talked about this a little bit before we turned
• 1:02:25
Speaker 1: on the recorder, but I wanted to save a little
• 1:02:27
Speaker 1: bit of this conversation for talking about this. Like, the
• 1:02:31
Speaker 1: Zack Snyder of all of this, where it's like, I'm
• 1:02:33
Speaker 1: just going to do whatever the fuck I want. And
• 1:02:35
Speaker 1: you know what? You're going to like it. And it's like,
• 1:02:37
Speaker 1: you know what? You can do whatever the fuck you want,
• 1:02:40
Speaker 1: but I don't have to like it. And me not
• 1:02:43
Speaker 1: liking it has nothing to do with the fact that
• 1:02:45
Speaker 1: you're subverting expectations because this show and so many other
• 1:02:49
Speaker 1: things are proof of you can subvert expectations and still
• 1:02:52
Speaker 1: get me to like it without that being the intention. Like, oh,
• 1:02:56
Speaker 1: you didn't like it because I subverted expectations. Like, no,
• 1:02:59
Speaker 1: I didn't like it because you did a bad job
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: at making it anything resembling the base thing to begin with. Like,
• 1:03:06
Speaker 1: you have to have some initial idea of the fucking
• 1:03:11
Speaker 1: nugget of the thing that most, if not all of us,
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: can agree upon. And if you're not willing to do that, okay.
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: But like, no, you can subvert my expectations all the time.
• 1:03:22
Speaker 1: And make this thing completely different and I will show
• 1:03:24
Speaker 1: up for it. Even if it is a thing that
• 1:03:28
Speaker 1: has a long tail of eight or ten or however
• 1:03:33
Speaker 1: many goddamn movies there are. A lot. Yeah, it's like ten, right?
• 1:03:38
  Speaker 1: Isn't Jason X called that because it's not... It's the
• 1:03:41
Speaker 1: tenth movie? Let's see. Eight is New York. Nine is
• 1:03:49
Speaker 1: Jason Goes to Hell. Okay, then there you go. So yeah,
• 1:03:53
Speaker 1: so 10. Yeah, Jason X is also called that because
• 1:03:54
Speaker 1: it's the 10th fucking movie. Like you said, Jason X
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: is canon. So if that's canon, they could literally have
• 1:04:02
Speaker 1: him be a super soldier. If that's where we're going, yeah,
• 1:04:07
Speaker 1: it's definitely a possibility. So can we talk about the supernatural?
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: Because we get the confirmation that the supernatural exists in
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: this show, right? We get Grace's mom who... Pamela Voorhees murdered.
• 1:04:21
Speaker 1: She hit her in the face with a mallet and
• 1:04:23
Speaker 1: then she fucking flew into a fryer, which when that happened,
• 1:04:27
Speaker 1: I was like, Holy shit. Like that, that was the
• 1:04:29
Speaker 1: moment I was talking about in the last episode that
• 1:04:32
Speaker 1: elicited a genuine reaction for me. I was like, wow,
• 1:04:34
Speaker 1: that was something else. Like it wasn't the fryer for me.
• 1:04:38
Speaker 3: Cause any, any, horrific movie where there is a deep fryer,
• 1:04:42
Speaker 3: somebody's going in it to some extent.
• 1:04:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, if they're in the kitchen together, yeah.
• 1:04:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, somebody's getting scalded in some way, shape or form
• 1:04:49
Speaker 3: with hot boiling grease. But the ripping her jaw off
• 1:04:53
Speaker 3: with a meat tenderizer was like, it is a gnarly effect.
• 1:04:58
Speaker 3: So that one was more of an impressive feat for me.
• 1:05:01
Speaker 3: I was just like, wow, she is not messing around.
• 1:05:04
Speaker 3: She was not like you messing with that child enough
• 1:05:07
Speaker 3: that she just tore your jaw.
• 1:05:10
Speaker 1: She hits her so hard with the mallet that her
• 1:05:12
Speaker 1: jaw just like comes off. It's fucking gnarly. And you
• 1:05:15
Speaker 1: know what? Like it's, it's well earned because again, as
• 1:05:18
Speaker 1: we've understood in the world of this show, like there
• 1:05:24
Speaker 1: is a level of violence to what's going on that
• 1:05:26
Speaker 1: like you get hit in the face with a mallet.
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: I think it would do that level of damage to you.
• 1:05:30
Speaker 1: So it's not like they're, going above and beyond they're
• 1:05:34
Speaker 1: going like maybe 10 to 15% overboard, but it's stylized. Yeah.
• 1:05:40
Speaker 3: They're like focusing on, look how cool this is like
• 1:05:43
Speaker 3: horror movies do. Like that's why we bring in such
• 1:05:46
Speaker 3: great effects guys back in the eighties. And like, that's
• 1:05:49
Speaker 3: what we're building on here is like, because you would
• 1:05:51
Speaker 3: stop for an extra 10 seconds ago.
• 1:05:54
Speaker 1: Look how cool this effect is.
• 1:05:55
Speaker 3: Look how much time we spent on this latex right here.
• 1:05:58
Speaker 3: And so, again, this probably has a little tweaking in
• 1:06:01
Speaker 3: the CG world. But that aside, it still looks amazing.
• 1:06:05
Speaker 1: And, like, is disturbing.
• 1:06:06
Speaker 3: So, like, of course, we hang on it for an
• 1:06:08
Speaker 3: extra few seconds just so the horror fans can be like, whoa, look,
• 1:06:13
  Speaker 3: like so.
• 1:06:14
Speaker 1: I'm still that dork. I still do that. Look at
• 1:06:17
Speaker 1: her tongue hanging out in her mouth. her just like
• 1:06:21
Speaker 1: her distended jaw. Like it's, it's fucking proper. Like you said,
• 1:06:24
Speaker 1: it's proper gnarly, which I appreciate.
• 1:06:26
Speaker 3: I am not above that. I had that same response still.
• 1:06:29
Speaker 3: I was like, yep, there you go.
• 1:06:30
  Speaker 1: You got me.
• 1:06:31
Speaker 3: You did something horrific to her face and I am
• 1:06:34
  Speaker 3: entertained by it.
• 1:06:36
Speaker 1: It takes a lot to get me anymore. But like,
• 1:06:38
Speaker 1: even I was like, that's fucking gross. Like Jesus Christ show.
• 1:06:42
Speaker 1: Like it's, I appreciate that the show is willing to
• 1:06:45
Speaker 1: kind of push the envelope, which, and again, it, it, it,
• 1:06:50
Speaker 1: it pushes the envelope in a way that doesn't feel,
• 1:06:54
Speaker 1: I'm not going to say like unearned, but the show
• 1:06:57
Speaker 1: does such a good job of earning those like gory moments,
• 1:07:02
Speaker 1: but also populating the moments in between with interesting, you know,
• 1:07:06
Speaker 1: things to look at, or, you know, like a funny,
• 1:07:08
Speaker 1: like kind of one-off scene or Linda Cardinelli doing whatever. Like,
• 1:07:13
Speaker 1: I appreciate that the show is not just gore for
• 1:07:16
Speaker 1: gore's sake like it it it earns those moments but
• 1:07:19
Speaker 1: those moments are populated in between a lot of like
• 1:07:23
Speaker 1: interesting character stuff or world building or a little bit
• 1:07:27
Speaker 1: of all of it like it is really the kind
• 1:07:29
Speaker 1: of it or kind of dairy of it all like
• 1:07:32
Speaker 1: they're really building the world around these characters and i
• 1:07:36
Speaker 1: like that of it all you know like it's you
• 1:07:38
  Speaker 1: know it's such a it's such a refreshing thing to
• 1:07:42
Speaker 1: be like oh you're really engaged with making the world
• 1:07:47
Speaker 1: that these characters live in feel real. And I appreciate that.
• 1:07:52
Speaker 1: What I think is really interesting.
• 1:07:53
Speaker 3: And again, it's, it's this moment is maybe the, where
• 1:07:57
Speaker 3: you really see it kind of take form is it's
• 1:08:01
Speaker 3: like Pam at this point, like she's had this almost
• 1:08:05
Speaker 3: awakening with like her life falling apart when, when she
• 1:08:09
Speaker 3: loses Jason, but that's just like mourning for nine months
• 1:08:12
Speaker 3: or however long it is. it's when those guys come
• 1:08:15
Speaker 3: back looking for that, like she, she hits this new level.
• 1:08:19
Speaker 3: And like, I think I said last episode, you also
• 1:08:22
Speaker 3: see it's like where she starts trying to recover and
• 1:08:24
Speaker 3: she starts trying to, you know, decide she can clear
• 1:08:28
Speaker 3: out his room and get in a relationship again. But
• 1:08:31
Speaker 3: it's also what leads to all these dead people. But
• 1:08:34
Speaker 3: she's like, she's almost an avenging angel as they go on.
• 1:08:38
Speaker 3: You know, it's like, she's the first two are just
• 1:08:41
Speaker 3: self-defense and, But then you get like the next guy
• 1:08:44
Speaker 3: that she's about to kill is just like standing up
• 1:08:47
Speaker 3: for herself. So that's like an in-between version that she
• 1:08:50
Speaker 3: then gets beat by that other guy who tears his
• 1:08:53
Speaker 3: face off. But when we get to mom in this one,
• 1:08:55
Speaker 3: like it is full-on i'm defending a poor child that
• 1:08:59
Speaker 3: you're injuring like she's just become a hero in her
• 1:09:03
Speaker 3: own eyes like in in her intent is like she's
• 1:09:06
Speaker 3: she's trying to be a superhero now she's trying to
• 1:09:09
Speaker 3: save someone who needs her and like it's it's a
• 1:09:14
Speaker 3: weird arc that she's going on but like she's she's
• 1:09:18
Speaker 3: improving and becoming more of a normal person in her
• 1:09:21
Speaker 3: everyday life with each of these steps that she's going through.
• 1:09:24
Speaker 3: And like, she's becoming a more well-formed, functional individual, the
• 1:09:30
Speaker 3: more people she murders. So it's, it's all out of whack,
• 1:09:36
Speaker 3: but it's a crazy journey that she's on because it
• 1:09:39
Speaker 3: is her just sort of going through these steps and
• 1:09:42
Speaker 3: like finding each time that she does this, that she
• 1:09:45
Speaker 3: feels that she's in the right, that she's not just
• 1:09:48
Speaker 3: murdering people because she's a sociopath, which maybe she is,
• 1:09:52
Speaker 3: but she's doing it because she feels like it's the
• 1:09:55
Speaker 3: right thing to do in this moment. And like, she,
• 1:09:57
Speaker 3: she feels like it's, it's what she needs to do
• 1:10:00
Speaker 3: is to stand up for herself and for other people
• 1:10:02
Speaker 3: that are being victimized.
• 1:10:04
Speaker 1: Correct me if I'm wrong. Is the chick, the hippie
• 1:10:07
Speaker 1: chick that goes missing in the fourth episode, or third episode, whichever.
• 1:10:12
Speaker 1: I know she shows up at the end of the
• 1:10:13
Speaker 1: fourth episode. Is she not dressed the way that one
• 1:10:16
Speaker 1: of the characters is dressed in one of those movies?
• 1:10:20
Speaker 1: Is that not another? That's another like nod, you know?
• 1:10:24
Speaker 1: But I'm talking about the one that's like goes off
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: on her own and gets murdered. No, I'm saying in,
• 1:10:28
Speaker 1: in the movies themselves. Oh, gotcha. Yeah. Fair.
• 1:10:30
Speaker 3: There's a lot of kids doing drugs. So, you know,
• 1:10:32
Speaker 3: there's plenty of hippie kids of some sort. So I'm sure.
• 1:10:36
Speaker 1: I'm pretty like, again, like it's the intentionality, but with
• 1:10:39
Speaker 1: what they're doing, everything in this show is again, like
• 1:10:42
Speaker 1: it's sly and a wink and a nod. But at
• 1:10:44
Speaker 1: the same time, like if you were a fan of
• 1:10:46
Speaker 1: the series, you're going to see these things like coming,
• 1:10:49
Speaker 1: you know, a mile away, which again, you know, I
• 1:10:53
Speaker 1: think the fans of the show appreciate that, or at
• 1:10:56
Speaker 1: least the series. I mean, I think the fans of
• 1:10:58
Speaker 1: the series became fans of the show, I guess is
• 1:11:01
Speaker 1: a better way of putting it. I think people who
• 1:11:02
Speaker 1: like the movies will appreciate this show. We didn't really
• 1:11:06
Speaker 1: address that in the last episode, but I think the
• 1:11:08
Speaker 1: show is good enough to get people who are fans
• 1:11:14
Speaker 1: of the series on board. with more of the show,
• 1:11:19
Speaker 1: which I think is the most important thing. I think
• 1:11:21
Speaker 1: if you're trying to get like long legs with a
• 1:11:24
Speaker 1: certain audience, like not all the audiences, I think the
• 1:11:27
Speaker 1: other audiences are going to show up for the right thing. Like,
• 1:11:30
Speaker 1: I think that the show does enough of the other things, right.
• 1:11:33
Speaker 1: That it's going to get those other people. But if
• 1:11:36
Speaker 1: you want to get like the OG fans, I think
• 1:11:38
Speaker 1: it does enough to get the OG fans as well.
• 1:11:41
Speaker 3: I feel like it's almost got more potential to rub
• 1:11:45
Speaker 3: the old fans the wrong way. But what it's doing
• 1:11:48
Speaker 3: right and it's telling such an interesting story, I think
• 1:11:51
Speaker 3: it's got more potential to pull in regular people that
• 1:11:55
Speaker 3: aren't as into Friday the 13th or even horror maybe
• 1:11:59
Speaker 3: if they find their way to it.
• 1:12:01
  Speaker 1: I think that's the thing.
• 1:12:01
Speaker 3: I think the hurdle is it's got such a connection
• 1:12:05
Speaker 3: to Friday the 13th.
• 1:12:06
Speaker 1: And the horror world that like they're going to think, oh,
• 1:12:09
Speaker 1: this isn't for me.
• 1:12:10
Speaker 3: I feel like if they get past that and are
• 1:12:12
Speaker 3: watching an episode, I think they would get sucked in
• 1:12:15
Speaker 3: and probably watch it. So I think it's got a
• 1:12:17
Speaker 3: lot more mainstream appeal than even most people would realize.
• 1:12:21
Speaker 1: It's just you got to be OK with the gore.
• 1:12:23
Speaker 3: But other than that, I think it's got potential to
• 1:12:25
Speaker 3: pull in, you know, regular streaming viewers out there.
• 1:12:29
Speaker 1: It's a little gorier than American Horror Story was. That's
• 1:12:34
  Speaker 1: got such a fan base. That's what I mean. I
• 1:12:37
Speaker 1: think that's crossed over.
• 1:12:38
Speaker 3: It's not just the old school horror fans. It's a
• 1:12:41
Speaker 3: big enough ordeal that happened around that and got the
• 1:12:45
Speaker 3: promotion that it did that I think it pulled.
• 1:12:47
Speaker 1: In a decent amount of regular viewers as well. Well,
• 1:12:50
Speaker 1: that's what I'm saying. I think this show has that
• 1:12:53
Speaker 1: possibility as well to be kind of bridging of the
• 1:12:57
Speaker 1: gap of like, well, I'm a casual– fan of horror
• 1:13:02
Speaker 1: like i'm not gonna say i'm like a fan of
• 1:13:03
Speaker 1: horror but i'm not gonna say i dislike horror either
• 1:13:06
Speaker 1: like and i i think that i think that there
• 1:13:08
Speaker 1: might be more people like that now than there ever
• 1:13:10
Speaker 1: have been that are willing to be like well i'm
• 1:13:12
  Speaker 1: more of a casual fan but i i wouldn't say
• 1:13:15
Speaker 1: i dislike it i know that there was a you
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: know a subsection of people that used to used to
• 1:13:21
Speaker 1: and do still really dislike horror for you don't want
• 1:13:23
Speaker 1: to like to be scared it's like oh my god
• 1:13:25
Speaker 1: whatever fine But I think there's so much crossover stuff
• 1:13:29
Speaker 1: now that has less of a specific genre to it
• 1:13:32
Speaker 1: that people are amenable to watching things that maybe present
• 1:13:36
Speaker 1: as more horror than they would have watched before. And
• 1:13:39
Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay, good. We live in a world
• 1:13:43
Speaker 1: now where I think genre and genre-specific things matter less
• 1:13:46
  Speaker 1: and less. Yeah.
• 1:13:48
Speaker 3: And they've blurred the lines on so many things that
• 1:13:50
Speaker 3: they're kind of this, but they're also this too.
• 1:13:53
Speaker 1: And like, so this is a very funny show. Yeah.
• 1:13:57
Speaker 1: Like it's, it's not just a show about Friday the 13th.
• 1:13:59
  Speaker 1: Like it's a funny show. There's like a lot of
• 1:14:02
Speaker 1: like really genuinely funny, well-written comedic moments. Like what does
• 1:14:06
Speaker 1: that have to do with horror? Yeah.
• 1:14:08
Speaker 3: And it's just, again, telling a good story about her.
• 1:14:11
Speaker 3: I mean, you see this woman rebuilding her life. Like
• 1:14:14
Speaker 3: here we see her after she, rips a woman's jaw off,
• 1:14:19
Speaker 3: watches her face fry, burns down the entire diner to
• 1:14:23
Speaker 3: cover it up, then goes and hooks up with the sheriff.
• 1:14:29
Speaker 1: And has sex with the cop to make sure she
• 1:14:32
Speaker 1: covers it, double covers it up, by the way.
• 1:14:35
  Speaker 3: Like, yeah.
• 1:14:37
Speaker 1: Gives herself a fucking alibi. I was like, this is
• 1:14:40
Speaker 1: an interesting story. Yeah. I was like, even if you
• 1:14:43
Speaker 1: take out all the murdering and the gore, like.
• 1:14:46
Speaker 3: Her just going through this journey is a hell of
• 1:14:49
  Speaker 3: a story regardless.
• 1:14:50
Speaker 1: Even if you take the Friday the 13th out of this,
• 1:14:53
Speaker 1: if this had nothing to do with Friday the 13th,
• 1:14:55
Speaker 1: this is still a very entertaining, well-written show. The Friday
• 1:15:00
Speaker 1: the 13th of it all makes it, I think, more
• 1:15:02
Speaker 1: intriguing for me. That the show is doing. And it's
• 1:15:05
Speaker 1: got brand recognition to help them. That's probably what got
• 1:15:08
Speaker 1: it made versus if this was just a woman with
• 1:15:11
Speaker 1: a different name, even if she lost a kid, which
• 1:15:13
Speaker 1: everybody be like, just like Friday the 13th.
• 1:15:15
Speaker 3: But like you could disguise it as the something else.
• 1:15:19
Speaker 3: And like, I think it would still be able to
• 1:15:21
Speaker 3: win people over if you stuck with the story because
• 1:15:23
  Speaker 3: it's so entertaining.
• 1:15:24
Speaker 1: Why don't we just do Friday the 13th? Okay. Like, yeah,
• 1:15:27
Speaker 1: like it's, we can do that. Yeah, we could do that.
• 1:15:30
Speaker 1: And like, that's the thing. Like a lot of the,
• 1:15:33
Speaker 1: a lot of the right things kind of coalesced at
• 1:15:37
Speaker 1: the right time to make this show. And that's the
• 1:15:39
Speaker 1: other thing that I really appreciate about this show is like,
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: you know, this show could not have existed in this
• 1:15:45
Speaker 1: form kind of before now. Like, and I'm glad that
• 1:15:49
Speaker 1: we live in a time where horror can be, the
• 1:15:53
Speaker 1: spotlight of a TV show. And it's not, you know,
• 1:15:56
Speaker 1: because again, you know, we haven't really talked about this,
• 1:15:58
Speaker 1: but don't forget, this is technically the second Friday the
• 1:16:03
Speaker 1: 13th TV show. I mean, in title. I mean, technically, yeah,
• 1:16:10
Speaker 1: in title. But in title is more than anything else
• 1:16:13
Speaker 1: ever has had up until this point.
• 1:16:14
Speaker 3: Because I was watching that every week and never did
• 1:16:17
Speaker 3: you see Jason hanging around there.
• 1:16:19
Speaker 1: No. I saw some Roby. I was there for Roby, but.
• 1:16:22
Speaker 1: It's not the, you know, again, like, I think it
• 1:16:25
Speaker 1: was really smart. If you're not going to be able
• 1:16:27
Speaker 1: to do Freddy the way that I think, you know,
• 1:16:30
Speaker 1: and I don't know what the hell anyone can do
• 1:16:32
Speaker 1: with Freddy anymore anyways, even at that time, but. Like
• 1:16:35
Speaker 1: you said, Jason isn't doing any talking, so he's not
• 1:16:38
Speaker 1: going to be in the wraparounds. Having Freddy in the wraparounds,
• 1:16:41
Speaker 1: very smart. Have him be the Crypt Keeper, right? Like,
• 1:16:43
Speaker 1: there you go. Jason, I don't know how you do that.
• 1:16:46
Speaker 1: And so with Jason just kind of being his own
• 1:16:49
Speaker 1: free agent, as it were, he is a character that
• 1:16:54
Speaker 1: didn't have a place in that show. But making him
• 1:16:56
Speaker 1: such a big part of this show, even if he's
• 1:16:59
Speaker 1: not on screen, smart. Address it head on. Address Jason
• 1:17:04
Speaker 1: as a character head on. Don't shy away from him
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: just because no one else has. View that as an
• 1:17:09
Speaker 1: opportunity to do better. Because I think this show, in
• 1:17:12
Speaker 1: the first four episodes, has done better by Jason as
• 1:17:15
Speaker 1: a character than any of the movies have up until
• 1:17:17
  Speaker 1: this point.
• 1:17:18
Speaker 3: I mean, it gives you a reason to care about
• 1:17:21
Speaker 3: him when he's young. But then even once we get
• 1:17:24
Speaker 3: to post-death or what we think is death. They still
• 1:17:29
Speaker 3: haven't found his body, to your point. Yeah, it's made
• 1:17:32
Speaker 3: him interesting. Like, now it's a mystery. It's like, is
• 1:17:35
Speaker 3: he still out there? Or if he is still out there,
• 1:17:38
Speaker 3: what is he now? Like, it's entered into potential supernatural
• 1:17:42
Speaker 3: of it. So then we're like, well, what's going on?
• 1:17:45
Speaker 3: And why is this happening? So even when he's not
• 1:17:48
Speaker 3: being a cute kid on screen, there's this whole other
• 1:17:51
Speaker 3: aspect that's already kicked in that's like, Leading towards that, potentially,
• 1:17:55
Speaker 3: we don't know at what point it's going to pick
• 1:17:57
Speaker 3: in and fully become a Jason's version of the story
• 1:18:00
Speaker 3: or if they ever really hand off the other than
• 1:18:03
Speaker 3: just leading straight into a movie. But, yeah, I think
• 1:18:06
Speaker 3: it's interesting that that he's as well represented as he
• 1:18:09
Speaker 3: is in this story.
• 1:18:10
Speaker 1: That's not really about him. It's Pamela's story.
• 1:18:13
Speaker 3: But like he's still featured heavily because he's so important
• 1:18:18
Speaker 3: to her. And like none of this would happen had her.
• 1:18:21
Speaker 3: she not lost him. So that's kind of what leads
• 1:18:23
Speaker 3: us to this story.
• 1:18:24
Speaker 1: Well, I don't know if none of this would have
• 1:18:26
Speaker 1: happened if she hadn't lost him. I just think she's
• 1:18:28
Speaker 1: more susceptible to this because he's gone. I don't know.
• 1:18:32
Speaker 1: I mean, she, he was alive and things were going
• 1:18:35
Speaker 1: poorly for him. Like, let me put it this way.
• 1:18:38
Speaker 1: If Jason had survived the drowning, do we really think
• 1:18:40
Speaker 1: she wouldn't have gained retribution on the people that did that?
• 1:18:43
Speaker 3: This is what I'm, this is what I, as you
• 1:18:45
Speaker 3: said that I was just wondering, I was like, she
• 1:18:47
Speaker 3: seemed like he was her whole world.
• 1:18:49
Speaker 1: Well, would have happened if Jason had come? What if
• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: it had happened if those two guys had shown up
• 1:18:54
Speaker 1: when Jason was alive? See, that's a different story.
• 1:18:57
Speaker 3: Yeah. If she was still around and nothing bad was
• 1:19:00
Speaker 3: going on, I think she would be happy and be
• 1:19:02
Speaker 3: with him and have whatever crappy job it took for
• 1:19:05
Speaker 3: her to be with him.
• 1:19:06
  Speaker 1: She didn't care.
• 1:19:07
Speaker 3: She just wanted to be with him. Now, if you
• 1:19:09
Speaker 3: enter in like someone putting Jason's life in jeopardy or
• 1:19:13
Speaker 3: something like that, if those guys show up and threaten
• 1:19:16
Speaker 3: to take Jason or kill Jason or whatever. Yeah, I
• 1:19:19
Speaker 3: think she easily again, then it's just mama bear at
• 1:19:21
Speaker 3: that point. Like she's just going to tear him apart
• 1:19:24
Speaker 3: because you don't mess with Jason. And this essentially is
• 1:19:27
Speaker 3: just the world mess with Jason. And now she's pissed
• 1:19:30
Speaker 3: off and she's taking it out on everybody.
• 1:19:33
Speaker 1: So like you said, I love the idea of her
• 1:19:36
Speaker 1: being the mama bear and feeding those guys to the bear.
• 1:19:39
  Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
• 1:19:40
Speaker 3: You know, and you had the bear up in her
• 1:19:42
Speaker 3: face the last first episode of her second episode. And
• 1:19:47
Speaker 3: that was another like weird like is this is this
• 1:19:50
Speaker 3: a supernatural thing? Does the bear sense she's equally as
• 1:19:54
Speaker 3: mean and powerful and doesn't want to mess with it?
• 1:19:56
Speaker 1: That she is also a mama bear. She is also
• 1:19:58
Speaker 1: a mama bear. And like, okay, you're just doing this
• 1:20:00
Speaker 1: to protect your kid. I get that. Right. I've been there.
• 1:20:04
Speaker 3: So I'm not, I'm not coming for you. I'm going
• 1:20:05
Speaker 3: to eat these guys. Cause they're already like honey glazed.
• 1:20:08
Speaker 3: So I'm going with this.
• 1:20:09
  Speaker 1: That's right. They're, they're delicious already. They're just waiting for
• 1:20:12
Speaker 1: me to eat them. I, man, I'm so glad that
• 1:20:16
Speaker 1: you wanted to watch this show. Yeah. It's a really
• 1:20:20
Speaker 1: like a I, you know, I think about, you know,
• 1:20:23
Speaker 1: we mentioned in the last episode, the Scream TV show.
• 1:20:26
  Speaker 1: I didn't dislike the Scream TV show. I don't know
• 1:20:29
Speaker 1: if you watched it, but it wasn't terrible. It wasn't
• 1:20:32
Speaker 1: it was not in any shape, form or fashion anything
• 1:20:36
Speaker 1: to do with the original series, which I appreciated.
• 1:20:38
Speaker 3: Like, again, it's probably a good idea when the first
• 1:20:41
Speaker 3: one was so important and did things so right that like,
• 1:20:45
Speaker 3: where do you go from there except down?
• 1:20:47
Speaker 1: So why not just to something very different. And it,
• 1:20:52
Speaker 1: I think for me worked because like you just said,
• 1:20:55
Speaker 1: like it, it was committed to doing something else. And
• 1:20:59
Speaker 1: I appreciated that about it. It didn't even use the
• 1:21:01
Speaker 1: ghost face mask. Like it literally had a different mask. Legally,
• 1:21:04
  Speaker 1: it couldn't once again. Yeah, well, that's, I mean, there's
• 1:21:07
Speaker 1: also that. But I think, again, that's to its advantage
• 1:21:10
Speaker 1: of like that separates you from it as well. Right.
• 1:21:12
Speaker 1: If you can't use it, what do you do instead?
• 1:21:14
Speaker 1: Like you figure it out. And they redesigned the mask
• 1:21:18
Speaker 1: in a way that was interesting. I, you know, I
• 1:21:20
Speaker 1: think that that show is the closest we've gotten up
• 1:21:23
Speaker 1: until this point. I mean, I don't know. I mean, Psycho, again,
• 1:21:27
Speaker 1: I haven't seen it, so I can't really speak to that.
• 1:21:29
Speaker 1: But I also– Psycho just– you mentioned the idea of
• 1:21:34
Speaker 1: Ghostface on the back end of things. Norman Bates is
• 1:21:37
Speaker 1: too far removed for him to be mentioned in that conversation.
• 1:21:40
Speaker 1: Like he's not, his body counts not that high. Like
• 1:21:44
Speaker 1: maybe the kind of granddaddy of it all expanded version
• 1:21:47
Speaker 1: of Norman. Sure. But like not the OG version of him.
• 1:21:52
Speaker 1: So I, I just think, you know, in my mind,
• 1:21:54
Speaker 1: it's like what we have now is a TV show
• 1:21:58
Speaker 1: that is actually like, like we've kind of talked about
• 1:22:01
Speaker 1: like giving itself a reason to exist more than just, well,
• 1:22:04
Speaker 1: we have the IP, so we're going to do the show. Yeah,
• 1:22:08
Speaker 1: I mean, that may have been what brought this into play.
• 1:22:13
Speaker 3: But from that point on, even as it was changing hands,
• 1:22:17
Speaker 3: even as it's having problems, somebody behind it decided, well,
• 1:22:21
Speaker 3: I want to do more with this. You know, there's
• 1:22:23
Speaker 3: a lot of options of things we could do, and
• 1:22:26
Speaker 3: we could just do run-of-the-mill, here's a bad version of
• 1:22:29
Speaker 3: Jason in a TV show instead. But they decided to
• 1:22:33
Speaker 3: kind of focus on Pamela and to even then– expand
• 1:22:38
Speaker 3: it and do a lot more than just kind of
• 1:22:40
  Speaker 3: your basic story.
• 1:22:41
Speaker 1: So, yeah, I think it's impressive what they decided to try.
• 1:22:44
Speaker 1: And I think for the most part, you know, again,
• 1:22:46
Speaker 1: like that's I guess as we kind of, you know,
• 1:22:49
Speaker 1: get ready to talk, you know, transition into the later
• 1:22:52
Speaker 1: half of this season, because, again, we've only watched the
• 1:22:55
Speaker 1: first four episodes. I do worry that the back half
• 1:23:00
Speaker 1: will sour what the first half has done, but that's
• 1:23:03
Speaker 1: always the fear, right?
• 1:23:04
Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, with, with a lot of shows, it's
• 1:23:07
Speaker 3: kind of hard to, because you're building up so much
• 1:23:10
Speaker 3: stuff in the beginning of anything, even movies sometimes is
• 1:23:13
Speaker 3: the same thing. It's like you're structuring it and like
• 1:23:16
Speaker 3: all the cool mystery of it is right there.
• 1:23:19
Speaker 1: And then when you have to.
• 1:23:20
Speaker 3: Answer the question of the mystery, it just depletes and
• 1:23:23
Speaker 3: it kills everything. So yeah, It's a balancing act of like,
• 1:23:27
Speaker 3: can what you deliver answering the question of the mystery
• 1:23:31
Speaker 3: be as cool as what the mystery itself was when
• 1:23:34
Speaker 3: you didn't know anything or just the tantalizing aspect of
• 1:23:39
Speaker 3: it when you didn't know the answer.
• 1:23:40
Speaker 1: So, yeah, I think that's a fight in anything you
• 1:23:44
Speaker 1: put together. There's a definite give and take when it
• 1:23:48
Speaker 1: comes to like, well, we have this box of But
• 1:23:51
Speaker 1: we can't leave the box closed the entire time. And
• 1:23:55
Speaker 1: we have to give you a little bit out of
• 1:23:56
Speaker 1: the box because if we don't give you a little
• 1:23:58
Speaker 1: bit out of the box, you won't be interested and
• 1:23:59
Speaker 1: you won't come back. So we have to make sure
• 1:24:01
Speaker 1: to balance that with giving you more to think about
• 1:24:05
Speaker 1: because if you don't have something to think about, you're
• 1:24:07
Speaker 1: going to be disinterested because then there will be nothing
• 1:24:09
Speaker 1: for you to engage with. So it's a balancing act.
• 1:24:13
Speaker 1: And so far, I'm engaged. Because even the cop character
• 1:24:18
Speaker 1: has a, well, what was he doing that would cause
• 1:24:21
Speaker 1: this guy to be like, don't fucking talk to me anymore.
• 1:24:23
Speaker 1: I'm out of here. There's so much going on with
• 1:24:27
Speaker 1: each of the characters that is interesting while not getting
• 1:24:31
Speaker 1: in the way of character development. That again, this is
• 1:24:33
  Speaker 1: a well-written show by someone who, and a writer's room
• 1:24:37
Speaker 1: of people that I think understood the assignment, which, you know.
• 1:24:43
Speaker 1: That is not the fucking case all the time. It's
• 1:24:45
Speaker 1: not a guarantee that that's going to be the case.
• 1:24:50
Speaker 3: I do just remember at one point, the guy in
• 1:24:52
Speaker 3: the hospital refers to him as some kind of demon.
• 1:24:56
Speaker 1: So maybe we've also got that. They keep dropping hints, right?
• 1:24:59
Speaker 1: Maybe it's full on just demon.
• 1:25:02
Speaker 3: He's just a devil has come up to earth to
• 1:25:05
Speaker 3: start murdering people left and right.
• 1:25:07
Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, again, the stranger things of it all,
• 1:25:10
Speaker 1: the portal in the lake to the other side of
• 1:25:13
Speaker 1: who knows what, he disappeared. This could be, yeah. I
• 1:25:17
Speaker 1: don't know how to feel about the Jason disappearing, his
• 1:25:20
Speaker 1: body disappearing, if they're trying to like, oh, well, he's
• 1:25:23
Speaker 1: still alive. I feel like if Jason was still alive,
• 1:25:26
Speaker 1: he would have gone back to his mom at some point.
• 1:25:29
Speaker 1: They seem kind of attached to one another. They were
• 1:25:33
Speaker 1: joined at the heart. They were forever, apparently. It's through
• 1:25:40
Speaker 1: the magic of a mother's love that Jason is able
• 1:25:43
Speaker 1: to come back. It's like the Pokemon movie. Like enough
• 1:25:46
Speaker 1: love will bring him back to life. Like, all right. Jason,
• 1:25:50
  Speaker 1: I choose you. That's right. I'm, you know, I'm so
• 1:25:54
Speaker 1: glad that they decided to make Friday the 13th a
• 1:25:57
Speaker 1: somewhat serious thing. Maybe. Oh, maybe. Can we can we
• 1:26:01
Speaker 1: give Nightmare on Elm Street a little love for God's sake?
• 1:26:03
Speaker 1: You are pushing your luck. I know. I know. God
• 1:26:07
Speaker 1: damn it. That's I feel like that's my own fault, really. But,
• 1:26:10
Speaker 1: you know, a girl can dream. So, you know, I
• 1:26:14
Speaker 1: just want Freddy Krueger to be, I don't know, not
• 1:26:17
Speaker 1: a serious character, but you know what I mean? Like
• 1:26:20
Speaker 1: cool again. Because he used to be really cool. I mean,
• 1:26:24
Speaker 1: that's the thing. Like, I don't know. At the end
• 1:26:27
Speaker 1: of the day, is cool Freddy that much worse than
• 1:26:31
Speaker 1: whatever version of Freddy we got in that 2008 movie?
• 1:26:35
Speaker 1: I don't think so. He wasn't cool. He was creepy,
• 1:26:38
Speaker 1: but not the right kind of creepy. No. That's my point. Again,
• 1:26:43
Speaker 1: he got too serious. It wasn't fun anymore.
• 1:26:46
Speaker 3: You're like, ugh, this is just kind of gross, and
• 1:26:49
Speaker 3: these kids are boring and depressing, and nothing was fun
• 1:26:53
Speaker 3: about that movie. That became the problem, I feel like, versus...
• 1:26:58
Speaker 3: The first one, even for as horrific as it is,
• 1:27:01
Speaker 3: the kids seem like real kids. Freddy was genuinely creepy.
• 1:27:05
Speaker 1: It had so much that it brought to the table,
• 1:27:07
  Speaker 1: that first movie.
• 1:27:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, again, diminishing as it got sillier, but
• 1:27:13
Speaker 3: that first movie is just so damn cool.
• 1:27:16
Speaker 1: Well, and again, what's the intention of the filmmaker or
• 1:27:21
Speaker 1: the screenwriter or the showrunner? I think in this, it's
• 1:27:24
Speaker 1: like to expand on what's been going on before, you know,
• 1:27:29
Speaker 1: all the other things up until this point that are
• 1:27:31
Speaker 1: Friday the 13th named. And I think, you know, what
• 1:27:37
Speaker 1: has been achieved here is a more kind of interesting
• 1:27:41
Speaker 1: look at the world surrounding Jason and everything else less
• 1:27:44
Speaker 1: specifically like, well, why is Jason killing all these people?
• 1:27:47
Speaker 1: It's like, that's not necessarily the most important question to answer.
• 1:27:51
Speaker 1: And I like that this show is kind of acknowledging
• 1:27:55
Speaker 1: that and wants to have a different conversation and wants
• 1:28:00
Speaker 1: to explore different avenues. And they're not the avenues that
• 1:28:04
Speaker 1: might have and would have been expected 10 years ago,
• 1:28:07
Speaker 1: 12 years ago, 15 years ago. Because again, even the
• 1:28:10
Speaker 1: reboot is still kind of doing the Jason thing. Yeah.
• 1:28:14
Speaker 1: It's very traditional. It mixes up the story a little,
• 1:28:17
Speaker 1: but it's still very traditional. If this is Jason is
• 1:28:19
Speaker 1: a fucking super soldier from some government experiment, like that
• 1:28:23
Speaker 1: is pretty far from anything they've done before. Other than
• 1:28:26
Speaker 1: Jason X, which is, again, canon, so.
• 1:28:29
Speaker 3: Which is, and again, the one that everybody thinks is ridiculous.
• 1:28:32
Speaker 3: I'm like, well, I mean, yeah, but.
• 1:28:35
Speaker 1: But isn't this all ridiculous?
• 1:28:36
Speaker 3: They did yeah he's like if that's so is a
• 1:28:39
Speaker 3: kid magically disappearing into a lake and then coming back
• 1:28:43
Speaker 3: and not being able to die over and over and
• 1:28:46
Speaker 3: over again at least freddy krueger tries to explain it's
• 1:28:49
Speaker 3: like well he made a.
• 1:28:50
Speaker 1: Deal with the dream demons And the dream demons kept
• 1:28:54
Speaker 1: him alive because it's kind of like a monster's ink
• 1:28:57
Speaker 1: thing where they're like the dream demons are powered off
• 1:28:59
Speaker 1: of nightmares apparently. So Freddy is killing them and giving
• 1:29:03
Speaker 1: them nightmares. And so they're enjoying that. Like Freddy, they
• 1:29:06
Speaker 1: did that. They did that. We just need an animated
• 1:29:10
Speaker 1: version in the Monsters, Inc. style. Right. And then it's
• 1:29:13
Speaker 1: Freddy going to college. Right. I'd watch this. I would
• 1:29:16
Speaker 1: watch that too. But, you know, I think this is
• 1:29:20
Speaker 1: kind of giving us what might now be kind of
• 1:29:22
Speaker 1: the way people view Jason moving forward, which I think
• 1:29:25
Speaker 1: is very funny because there's, up until this point, they've
• 1:29:28
Speaker 1: kind of not addressed it. And so if you haven't
• 1:29:31
Speaker 1: addressed it up until this point, it's kind of open
• 1:29:33
Speaker 1: for interpretation. And if this is the interpretation they're going with, perfect. Perfect.
• 1:29:39
Speaker 3: It's definitely an interesting take if that's where they end.
• 1:29:42
Speaker 1: Up with it. Yeah. So on that note, on the
• 1:29:48
Speaker 1: next episode, you hear Brian and I on talking about
• 1:29:50
Speaker 1: Crystal Lake. We'll be talking about episode five and six
• 1:29:53
Speaker 1: of the first and possible only season of this show.
• 1:29:56
Speaker 1: So until then, you can find Brian and I at weirdingwaymedia.com
• 1:29:59
Speaker 1: where this show is. Brian's show movie meltdown, my show,
• 1:30:03
Speaker 1: the culture cast, which this is on the sub feed
• 1:30:05
Speaker 1: of can be found. So go there, do that. And yeah,
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: like rate and review whatever show you are listening to,
• 1:30:12
Speaker 1: or all the shows you're listening to on iTunes and
• 1:30:14
Speaker 1: then Spotify in that order. That helps us out the most.
• 1:30:18
Speaker 1: It helps us engage with the algorithm. If you want
• 1:30:20
Speaker 1: to go to Patreon, patreon.com slash culture cast is where
• 1:30:23
Speaker 1: you can do that. But you know, liking and rating
• 1:30:25
Speaker 1: and reviewing the show on iTunes and Spotify is much
• 1:30:28
Speaker 1: more helpful. So do that. Go there. And yeah, come
• 1:30:31
Speaker 1: on back for when we talk about the next two
• 1:30:33
Speaker 1: episodes of A24' s Crystal Lake.
