- 1:37Speaker 1: here today's episode. Wow, I felt so so deeply special
- 1:44Speaker 1: to record with this just phenomenal guests that I have today.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Today's episode is featuring the founder of Mama Glow, Latham Thomas.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Just a truly exceptional, groundbreaking, wise, deep, highly intuitive force
- 2:06Speaker 1: in the world. That is the best way to describe Latham.
- 2:10Speaker 1: She is a divine force for good, for women and um.
- 2:15Speaker 1: She and I were first connected actually in two thousand
- 2:18Speaker 1: and nineteen. UM. We had been following each other on
- 2:20Speaker 1: social and I just I loved her energy. It's just breathtaking,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and I remember she had reached out. She has this
- 2:28Speaker 1: beautiful column that she does for Well and Good that
- 2:30Speaker 1: explores so many facets of the journey of self, of
- 2:34Speaker 1: the journey of mothering, of the journey of healing, and
- 2:37Speaker 1: she featured me in one of her columns. The article
- 2:40Speaker 1: was titled how this hip hop influencer went from Burnout
- 2:43Speaker 1: to Bliss, and it was really speaking to the big
- 2:47Speaker 1: change in careers I had made and the following of
- 2:51Speaker 1: my dharmic path and the following of my soul, going
- 2:54Speaker 1: from broadcasting and entertainment industry career to really deciding that
- 2:59Speaker 1: I wanted every second of my life um to be
- 3:03Speaker 1: in service and healing and wellness. And so it was
- 3:06Speaker 1: just such a wonderful experience having that conversation with her there.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And so finally the time has come, uh for Latham
- 3:15Speaker 1: to join me in this platform, and I'm so excited
- 3:19Speaker 1: to share this conversation, to share so much of her
- 3:23Speaker 1: and her work on here. And so buckle up, highly
- 3:27Speaker 1: recommend getting a notebook out. We will be using that,
- 3:30Speaker 1: especially a little later in the show. There is some
- 3:32Speaker 1: soul work towards the end of this episode, and also
- 3:36Speaker 1: towards the end of this episode, I'm going to have
- 3:38Speaker 1: some information for you on how you can connect with
- 3:43Speaker 1: Latham at an upcoming event that she is doing, the
- 3:47Speaker 1: Doula Expo by Mama Glow, which is on October. So
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna have all those deeds at the end of
- 3:53Speaker 1: the episode. But let me give you a little bit

- 6:04Speaker 1: huge grateful, Welcome to Latham Thomas. Welcome to the show,
- 6:12Speaker 1: Latham Thomas. Hi, Debbie Wow, blessings. I'm so grateful to
- 6:20Speaker 1: be here with you. I am so grateful for you
- 6:23Speaker 1: to be here. Something that I was sharing with you
- 6:26Speaker 1: offline before we hit record is that this is actually
- 6:29Speaker 1: the first time I've brought a conversation like this to
- 6:32Speaker 1: my audience, and it feels um one, so timely, so important.
- 6:37Speaker 1: But I feel so excited that I get you to
- 6:40Speaker 1: be that foundational rock of what this work is and
- 6:43Speaker 1: exploring this for people you have held and lad in
- 6:47Speaker 1: such a phenomenal way in the world in times where
- 6:50Speaker 1: this wasn't known work and where it was probably required
- 6:55Speaker 1: to do so much disarming of people in so many
- 6:57Speaker 1: ways to understand the importance of And so I just
- 7:00Speaker 1: want to really like anchor in that and say that
- 7:03Speaker 1: I honor you so much for the work that you
- 7:06Speaker 1: do in the world and the way that you do it. Wow,
- 7:10Speaker 1: thank you for receiving that and also reflecting back that. UM.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I appreciate how you've shown up and how you've led
- 7:17Speaker 1: people in spaces where wellness, spiritual life and UM and
- 7:26Speaker 1: sort of embodiment of these practices UH wasn't prevalent and
- 7:31Speaker 1: has found a way to weave these UH we've are
- 7:35Speaker 1: practices are ancestral traditions UM into spaces that you know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: really need it. Like we think about UM culture and
- 7:45Speaker 1: we think about black culture, we think about hip hop,
- 7:48Speaker 1: we think about music and entertainment and UM and how
- 7:52Speaker 1: those places are so fraught and and how many people
- 7:56Speaker 1: are suffering because they don't have access to tools I
- 8:00Speaker 1: really can carry them through. And how you use you know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: your own practice to model for people what it could
- 8:07Speaker 1: be like too to live UM a life well intentioned,
- 8:11Speaker 1: right and UM and joyful, which I think is so important. UM. Yeah,
- 8:16Speaker 1: So thank you too. And obviously it it created its
- 8:19Speaker 1: own world, right, Like, it's like you went a direction
- 8:23Speaker 1: that also took you into this an incredible UM brand,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and so I'm also really proud of you. Um yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 1: immensely proud of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you,
- 8:38Speaker 1: thank you. I don't even like, I have so many
- 8:42Speaker 1: directions I want to take this in, so I'm like,
- 8:44Speaker 1: let me try to tent parter, let me, but you
- 8:50Speaker 1: know late them. Um, you are so many things, and
- 8:53Speaker 1: you occupy space and expertise in so many facets, but
- 8:57Speaker 1: specifically some of the things that I think people really
- 8:59Speaker 1: know of your work. You're an entrepreneur, you're best selling author,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you're speaker, and you're a birth Doulah. When I think
- 9:07Speaker 1: of that, that just profoundly sacred womb work, that work
- 9:13Speaker 1: of being with the highest creation that is possible in
- 9:18Speaker 1: this life. How how did you find your way into
- 9:22Speaker 1: this space? How did you recognize this especially as I,
- 9:25Speaker 1: as I shared earlier, in a time where this, this
- 9:28Speaker 1: work was so much harder to find, harder to understand.
- 9:32Speaker 1: How did you hear your call and how did you
- 9:34Speaker 1: answer it? First of all, thank you for that question,
- 9:38Speaker 1: because UM, I do really see it as a calling, um,
- 9:44Speaker 1: not a choice. Not a passion, um, but but a
- 9:48Speaker 1: deep calling and UM. And to clarify for people what
- 9:52Speaker 1: a calling is versus your job or your career or
- 9:57Speaker 1: your passion is that um. You know, a calling takes
- 10:04Speaker 1: it takes all of you right to show up for
- 10:08Speaker 1: and um. And it also is really inconvenient, right like
- 10:12Speaker 1: calling is never like all right, a calling is never,
- 10:17Speaker 1: you know, like everything is lined up in your life perfectly,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and there's this carve out of this thing that God
- 10:25Speaker 1: is sending upon you to do. No, it is in
- 10:27Speaker 1: the midst of everything that's happening in your life that
- 10:31Speaker 1: you're being asked to step into a bigger aspect of yourself.
- 10:35Speaker 1: You're being asked to expand. And usually you feel under
- 10:39Speaker 1: resourced when you're being asked to expand in these ways.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And and the ingenuity to answer and the pathway to
- 10:50Speaker 1: matt for yourself UM is driven by the commitment to
- 10:55Speaker 1: be obedient to the call. And so it's just like
- 10:59Speaker 1: you asking God and you know, spirit and energy and
- 11:05Speaker 1: the universe to order your steps right and then just
- 11:07Speaker 1: being obedient to that. So for me it was definitely
- 11:12Speaker 1: that it was definitely being obedient. Um. I'm a tourist
- 11:16Speaker 1: so it's very hard for us to follow rules and
- 11:18Speaker 1: pay attention and and find our way to right. So
- 11:22Speaker 1: it's like if I'm answering a call, it took a
- 11:24Speaker 1: long time to get there. UM. So to answer the question,
- 11:29Speaker 1: when I when I was four years old, UM, my
- 11:33Speaker 1: mother was pregnant with my sister, and my aunt was
- 11:37Speaker 1: pregnant as well as my great aunt, and they're all
- 11:40Speaker 1: do within a month of each other, and that was
- 11:43Speaker 1: um March, April and May that they were going to
- 11:45Speaker 1: all deliver UM. And I always think about the spring
- 11:48Speaker 1: because at the time when we would watch animals, they
- 11:52Speaker 1: would all deliver in the spring. So I was like,
- 11:53Speaker 1: oh my gosh, look at us, like the animals are
- 11:55Speaker 1: coming in the springtime, and these babies are coming in
- 11:57Speaker 1: the springtime. And so UM, and I wasn't a baby.
- 12:00Speaker 1: My sister was born five years and ten days after me,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and so we were made baby. She was born on
- 12:05Speaker 1: Mother's Day. And what I remember was my mother being
- 12:09Speaker 1: really intentional about education. Right, So the foundation for me
- 12:14Speaker 1: around UM body awareness, body literacy, and a real understanding
- 12:22Speaker 1: of UM human physiology started at an early age. So
- 12:27Speaker 1: all of the anatomy we were using proper terms for
- 12:31Speaker 1: so you know, I was not ever calling um. I
- 12:35Speaker 1: was never using nicknames for my body parts, right, Like
- 12:37Speaker 1: I always knew the anatomical isn't your Yeah, No, she
- 12:43Speaker 1: was very clear on the parts. And so so I
- 12:46Speaker 1: remember she's super proud of this moment. We were in
- 12:49Speaker 1: the grocery store one day and this woman was like, oh, wow,
- 12:52Speaker 1: you're gonna be a big sister. I was like yes,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and she's like, your mother has a baby in her tummy.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I said, no, my mother has a baby in her
- 12:57Speaker 1: uterus is going to come out from vagina. So that
- 13:02Speaker 1: was actually happening, right. So she was like, oh my gosh,
- 13:05Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. You know, she's just really fascinated. And
- 13:08Speaker 1: so I used to watch this show on PBS called
- 13:11Speaker 1: My Mom Is Having a Baby and I still remember
- 13:13Speaker 1: this shingle to that to that song and um and
- 13:18Speaker 1: just like the really kind of really just just really
- 13:22Speaker 1: rudimentory um animation that they had, but it was really educational,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and I had books and coloring books and things, and
- 13:31Speaker 1: so that was really the foundation for me understanding more
- 13:35Speaker 1: about the body. And then when my sister was born,
- 13:39Speaker 1: I think um around that time too, I had a
- 13:42Speaker 1: cousin who was just a couple of months old or
- 13:44Speaker 1: maybe ten months older than me, and so she was
- 13:46Speaker 1: also going to become a big sister. So we we're
- 13:49Speaker 1: playing together and just modeling what we saw, and so
- 13:52Speaker 1: we would take take our little cabbage tresh dolls and
- 13:55Speaker 1: stuck them under our shirts and then pretend to deliver
- 13:58Speaker 1: each other's babies. So so that's sort of when the
- 14:01Speaker 1: seed was planted. Right, So I was like four, and
- 14:04Speaker 1: then you fast forward, you know, into adulthood where the
- 14:10Speaker 1: experience is now real. Right, Like I had the foundation
- 14:14Speaker 1: of understanding, um, my body and having you know, a
- 14:19Speaker 1: mother who like just walked around the house nakeds We
- 14:22Speaker 1: were always naked in the house, and so there was
- 14:24Speaker 1: just this comfort in the body and also a trust
- 14:26Speaker 1: and a listening to the body that was cultivated at
- 14:28Speaker 1: early age. And so yeah, I think back on it,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I'm like wow, Like, you know, when I got older
- 14:36Speaker 1: and I'd be in the house and I'm like, oh,
- 14:37Speaker 1: people don't walk make it, people don't do this, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: So I think I was so used to it. But
- 14:43Speaker 1: it also made you feel comfortable, you know, whatever your
- 14:46Speaker 1: body was doing, and also noticed the changes in your
- 14:48Speaker 1: body and and so um, that was really great. So
- 14:51Speaker 1: that planted the seed for me. And then fast forward
- 14:55Speaker 1: to um, my experience with my son, and I'm sure
- 14:59Speaker 1: we'll probably come here, but but to just underscore, um,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you know, delivering in New York City and you know,
- 15:09Speaker 1: being pregnant in New York not having the same resources
- 15:12Speaker 1: that I had in California. Um, because I went to
- 15:16Speaker 1: college here. I went to Columbia University of State, fell
- 15:19Speaker 1: in love, adwater, was pregnant, right, and here comes a baby.
- 15:24Speaker 1: So now I'm like navigating the terrain of delivering a
- 15:27Speaker 1: baby in New York City where I don't have any
- 15:30Speaker 1: connection to any sort of you know, practitioners, Like I
- 15:34Speaker 1: don't know where to go in this process. So I'm
- 15:36Speaker 1: literally mapping this process for myself in the time twenty
- 15:40Speaker 1: years ago. Now twenty years and sound like a long time,
- 15:43Speaker 1: right because we think back, we're like, oh, that's you
- 15:45Speaker 1: know whatever, like early two thousands, But it really wasn't.
- 15:49Speaker 1: It really was like I mean we're talking about technology.
- 15:52Speaker 1: This was like the ice age and technology. So in
- 15:56Speaker 1: two thousand, we still have cell phones that had like
- 16:00Speaker 1: the little antenna that you would like pull up to
- 16:03Speaker 1: try to get signaled. We did not have text messaging.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Text messaging was nascent, Okay, we did not have text messaging,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and so all of this contributed to a really disparate
- 16:16Speaker 1: space in terms of resource and access. So when you're
- 16:19Speaker 1: trying to figure out how to find a practitioner, the products,
- 16:22Speaker 1: the best services, you can't find because you're just like,
- 16:26Speaker 1: wait a minute, where is everything? And so um, there's
- 16:29Speaker 1: only a few websites that existed that addressed parenthood. So
- 16:32Speaker 1: I found those, and those were like really inflexible and
- 16:34Speaker 1: hard to navigate. So I sort of like did what
- 16:37Speaker 1: anybody else would do, which was like, you know, on
- 16:40Speaker 1: a on a heart centered level, just approach practitioners, vetted products,
- 16:45Speaker 1: figured out what services would make sense for me, but
- 16:48Speaker 1: also not really for me to benefit from. It was
- 16:50Speaker 1: really like um an accumulation of resources that I was
- 16:53Speaker 1: able to pass on, right because by the time I
- 16:56Speaker 1: figured it all out, I was I already had my baby, right,
- 17:00Speaker 1: But the big thing was choosing to deliver out of
- 17:04Speaker 1: hospital and having an out of hospital birth at a
- 17:06Speaker 1: birth center. And I lift up this because Midwiffree is
- 17:10Speaker 1: in our ancestry and is in UM and it's in
- 17:13Speaker 1: the fabric of what has become UM our current medical system. UM.
- 17:20Speaker 1: The the foundation of that was midwiffree and primarily UM
- 17:27Speaker 1: African and indigenous folks who were delivering babies. UM. We're
- 17:31Speaker 1: talking four hundreds of years ago, like four hundred years ago, right,
- 17:34Speaker 1: who laid a foundation for what become healthcare system UM
- 17:39Speaker 1: and who would really be the people on the front
- 17:42Speaker 1: lines to make sure that we were able to deliver safely. UM.
- 17:47Speaker 1: We don't have as many midwives anymore and so and
- 17:49Speaker 1: we'll talk about that later. But for me, it was
- 17:52Speaker 1: important to deliver in that kind of space and have
- 17:55Speaker 1: bodily autonomy and UM and have an experience that was
- 17:59Speaker 1: really sacred. And the birth of my son was like
- 18:02Speaker 1: an out of body experience. So that led me, I think,
- 18:05Speaker 1: to also answer the call. And you know what I mean,
- 18:08Speaker 1: Like all these things kind of add up after that experience, Debbie,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and you'll appreciate this. UM. I saw bedic astrologer I
- 18:20Speaker 1: was I was teaching at an ashram. I saw a
- 18:22Speaker 1: vehic astrologer and he said to me, UM, like we
- 18:26Speaker 1: did a puja for my birthday. He said, come, I
- 18:28Speaker 1: want to do a reading. I was like, okay, we
- 18:29Speaker 1: did a reading and he's doing divination okay, And I'm
- 18:34Speaker 1: only telling Debbie this because Debbie is a person who
- 18:36Speaker 1: could hold this for me right Like, not everybody could
- 18:38Speaker 1: take this story right now. Everybody could do this. So
- 18:41Speaker 1: we're doing divination. I'm in this tiny little space with him.
- 18:43Speaker 1: The room. First of all, it is claustrophobic. It was
- 18:45Speaker 1: like the tiniest room. I could touch all four corners
- 18:48Speaker 1: of the room with with my body just slightly reaching right.
- 18:51Speaker 1: So I'm like, oh my god, I'm like, am I
- 18:53Speaker 1: about to ignite so hot? I'm so it's dark, and
- 18:56Speaker 1: but he's doing this whole thing and I'm just getting
- 18:58Speaker 1: comfortable with it. And um, and then he writes down
- 19:02Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff that I can't understand. He says
- 19:04Speaker 1: a bunch of things that I can't understand, like kind
- 19:06Speaker 1: of broken English, and then a little bit of you know,
- 19:09Speaker 1: Hindu and um. I was like, I was like, what's
- 19:12Speaker 1: going on? And then and then he says to me, Um, okay, uh,
- 19:17Speaker 1: you're supposed to mother to mother And I was like, okay,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I'm doing that. He's like no, no, no, in a
- 19:22Speaker 1: huge way. You're supposed to mother to mother more than
- 19:25Speaker 1: you're doing now. I was like, okay, and he said,
- 19:28Speaker 1: these numbers are very important to you. Look at these
- 19:31Speaker 1: numbers show up in your life. I said okay. And
- 19:33Speaker 1: then he also went into like and then you gotta
- 19:35Speaker 1: do you know, you gotta do your sad now, you
- 19:38Speaker 1: gotta do this. And he started going through all the
- 19:40Speaker 1: things I need to do and like, here's your posture
- 19:42Speaker 1: for this, and I was like, okay, Like got it.
- 19:45Speaker 1: So then, of course, my whole rest of the week,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I'm like looking around for these numbers. And then I
- 19:50Speaker 1: get back to New York and my life. Right, And
- 19:54Speaker 1: this is back when you didn't check email every day.
- 19:57Speaker 1: One day, I get up and check email because I
- 20:00Speaker 1: you know, you check it like maybe once every few weeks.
- 20:02Speaker 1: By the way, this is what email used to be, y'all.
- 20:04Speaker 1: You did not trust it. We didn't even believe the
- 20:06Speaker 1: email was gonna stay. Okay, we're still getting all of
- 20:09Speaker 1: our mail in the mailbox. People would write letters to you. Okay,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I missed those days. Vote, but that's another story. So
- 20:18Speaker 1: so literally, write write me a letter. So so I'm
- 20:22Speaker 1: on Debbie, right, I'm on the email like we would
- 20:26Speaker 1: call the interwebs or whatever. The time. Right. So I'm
- 20:28Speaker 1: on my email and I see a thing like you
- 20:34Speaker 1: know how it has that like little notification of what
- 20:36Speaker 1: the email is, and then you go inside it's like
- 20:39Speaker 1: a subject line. There's a subject line, and the subject
- 20:43Speaker 1: line says um that I was accepted to Adula Fellowship program.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And I was like oh. And then I look at
- 20:50Speaker 1: the date and the date corresponded with one of the
- 20:55Speaker 1: dates he gave me. Wow, And I was like, okay, God,
- 20:59Speaker 1: because I been evading it for so long. Everyone's like,
- 21:01Speaker 1: are you gonna you should do? Like you teach predato yoga,
- 21:04Speaker 1: you do all this nutrition stuff with moms, you do
- 21:06Speaker 1: all that. Can you just be my Duela? Was like,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I cannot be your Dula, And I kept pushing it off,
- 21:09Speaker 1: pushing it off, and God was like, if you don't,
- 21:12Speaker 1: sit your behind down and let me just work through
- 21:15Speaker 1: you on this, right, And so it came that way
- 21:18Speaker 1: and then I said, and by the way, I do
- 21:20Speaker 1: not remember applying for the fellowship, so I believe like
- 21:23Speaker 1: I channeled this application because I don't even recall feeling
- 21:26Speaker 1: it out. There was like no recollection of actually feeling
- 21:29Speaker 1: it out. So then I was like, you know what, God,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I'm listening. You have my full attention. You have my
- 21:37Speaker 1: full attention. Wow, you know what? Well? I was so
- 21:49Speaker 1: beautiful and I really want to highlight this for everyone listening.
- 21:52Speaker 1: The way that I heard you just share yourself. It
- 21:55Speaker 1: went from and this is the stages I think of
- 22:00Speaker 1: living and embodying and awakened life. You went from this
- 22:06Speaker 1: is my calling, and then it moved into this is
- 22:08Speaker 1: my mission, you know, and the steps that it took
- 22:11Speaker 1: to get there. Like you heard the call. We all
- 22:13Speaker 1: get a call, whether or not you answer, it is
- 22:16Speaker 1: between you and creator. But it goes from a call
- 22:21Speaker 1: to like an undying mission, like a way of service
- 22:25Speaker 1: that just amits from you that you know you're meant
- 22:28Speaker 1: to stand in for this lifetime. Is that how it
- 22:31Speaker 1: felt in that journey, because it's like it was so
- 22:35Speaker 1: there's so many layers of what you said that I
- 22:36Speaker 1: think are so beautifully connected to everyone being able to
- 22:40Speaker 1: understand purpose and destiny or the word that I think
- 22:44Speaker 1: better m encapsulates all of it is the sam script
- 22:47Speaker 1: word of dharma. It is that inner truth, that deep aboding,
- 22:52Speaker 1: you know, And it's like you were given this really
- 22:55Speaker 1: exquisite foundation from birth of a mother, who was deeply
- 23:00Speaker 1: emotionally regulated, who had tools, who was sharing herself in
- 23:03Speaker 1: such a way with you. You're noticing that this is
- 23:07Speaker 1: what feels really important to you and really valuable to you,
- 23:12Speaker 1: and and really intrinsically a piece of you. Then you
- 23:15Speaker 1: have your experience, you know, and you arrive as the
- 23:19Speaker 1: hero because you're seeing based on your experience with all
- 23:23Speaker 1: that God is channeling through you what the world needs.
- 23:26Speaker 1: And then you embodied it. And it's like wow, wow,
- 23:30Speaker 1: I mean, it's so much easier to not by the way,
- 23:35Speaker 1: so I could see why people decide not to write
- 23:38Speaker 1: because it's so much easier to turn the other way.
- 23:43Speaker 1: But I have to say this, it's also painful when
- 23:45Speaker 1: you don't answer, like, like you pay the cost, right,
- 23:49Speaker 1: There is a cost for like not stepping into it.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And so the longer it takes you to step in.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I think about it like this too, Like I'm like,
- 23:57Speaker 1: oh my gosh, so many people can be touched, right,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Like if we the more the earlier we start a process,
- 24:07Speaker 1: the more people we can touch, right. And so it's
- 24:09Speaker 1: like I think, and I'm like, wow, I know that
- 24:11Speaker 1: I was meant to answer at this time, but had
- 24:14Speaker 1: I been obedient the whole time, right, So it's interesting
- 24:17Speaker 1: sometimes you think like that too, but most of it
- 24:20Speaker 1: for me becomes you know, I needed the different entry points,
- 24:24Speaker 1: and certainly my son's birth was one of those moments
- 24:27Speaker 1: where it was like very crystalline for me too. But
- 24:31Speaker 1: it was like a matter of like, how would that
- 24:33Speaker 1: how would that show up later? Right? UM? But I
- 24:37Speaker 1: think it's it's what it feels like. UM. And I'm
- 24:42Speaker 1: sure you know this two is like there's um like
- 24:46Speaker 1: as you sort of choose and move in the direction
- 24:52Speaker 1: of service leadership and showing up. Um, it's like it
- 24:58Speaker 1: feels like things melt open, right, Like things start to
- 25:02Speaker 1: like I felt like stuff falling away. And so what
- 25:06Speaker 1: that looked like was also distraction like falls away and
- 25:12Speaker 1: like an ability to focus in a way that may
- 25:15Speaker 1: not even be uh recognizable or even normal for you. UM.
- 25:21Speaker 1: An ability to uh surface energy and um sustenance that
- 25:28Speaker 1: can like carry you in fortitude, that can carry you
- 25:30Speaker 1: through moments that are really challenging, like stuff that like
- 25:33Speaker 1: you know that we find like certainly in birth, right,
- 25:36Speaker 1: like when you have your baby on the other side
- 25:38Speaker 1: of that, there's all this strength and energy and whatever
- 25:41Speaker 1: and you're like, I haven't eaten in like two days, right,
- 25:44Speaker 1: Like you just find it, it comes right, and I
- 25:48Speaker 1: feel like that's also kind of UM big. One of
- 25:51Speaker 1: the gifts that comes with answering is that you do
- 25:55Speaker 1: get endowed with some some superpowers to kind of sustain
- 26:00Speaker 1: you through the crazy because pursuing a lot of the
- 26:03Speaker 1: things that we choose to do UM, you have to
- 26:07Speaker 1: have a healthy dose of naivete to be in the
- 26:11Speaker 1: midst of it when it's so intense and you don't
- 26:14Speaker 1: know what you're doing right, or you're you're just like
- 26:16Speaker 1: I'm listening and I'm moving with the energy of this.
- 26:19Speaker 1: And if you were to actually fully be able to
- 26:22Speaker 1: see the full picture, many of us would never take
- 26:26Speaker 1: the path because if you saw what it all would entail,
- 26:29Speaker 1: if you saw how much you know, you would have
- 26:31Speaker 1: to endure, you wouldn't even take the first step. And
- 26:35Speaker 1: so what's beautiful about UM journeys? They're always cyclical, right,
- 26:42Speaker 1: like we're we're winding our way, we can't see straight,
- 26:46Speaker 1: so as we even put one ft in front of
- 26:48Speaker 1: the next, we still can't see onto the other side.
- 26:50Speaker 1: So which is actually a gift because it keeps us
- 26:53Speaker 1: in the present. It keeps us focus and committed. It
- 26:57Speaker 1: allows us to make space really right for or um
- 27:01Speaker 1: for what we're meant to do, and also to be
- 27:04Speaker 1: present and the experiences we're having. And so I'm thankful
- 27:07Speaker 1: for that because I think that in a culture that
- 27:10Speaker 1: we're in right now, right that's like accelerated and everything
- 27:13Speaker 1: is fast and instant, you know, um, and really there's
- 27:18Speaker 1: no um culminating moment of celebration or of ritual around
- 27:24Speaker 1: you know, our arrival someplace where there certainly also isn't
- 27:28Speaker 1: a celebration of just this journey that we're taking, right.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It's all about like I gotta get here, I gotta
- 27:35Speaker 1: right And and I think that what what you're calling
- 27:39Speaker 1: does is really grounds you in the present and keeps
- 27:43Speaker 1: you honest and keeps you um like committed right committed
- 27:48Speaker 1: to work and and and and it really serves as
- 27:51Speaker 1: like I think, a tether, right so that you can
- 27:54Speaker 1: move through this world self paced, um, because it'll have
- 27:58Speaker 1: you if you look everywhere else, it'll have you think
- 28:01Speaker 1: like this world will have you think that you have
- 28:02Speaker 1: to you do all these things to succeed and whatever.
- 28:06Speaker 1: And but when you're doing what you're meant to do
- 28:09Speaker 1: like UM Like, it doesn't fit into these UM paradigms easily, right,
- 28:15Speaker 1: It's actually it's more expansive, you know, when we can
- 28:19Speaker 1: commit to our calling and we can commit to the
- 28:22Speaker 1: mission driven work. Right, So I think it's it's important
- 28:27Speaker 1: to UM like as we feel these things sitting in
- 28:31Speaker 1: our bellies and we feel the butterflies or whatever it
- 28:34Speaker 1: is or excitement UM to like, you know, step into
- 28:38Speaker 1: that right, step into the feeling, and also embrace the
- 28:41Speaker 1: work that's waiting for us. But find find your your
- 28:45Speaker 1: best listening tool, right because for me, it came through
- 28:48Speaker 1: so many different avenues like the words, and I was
- 28:51Speaker 1: like yeah, and then I kept pushing it off. And
- 28:55Speaker 1: so I think that we all get to where we're
- 28:56Speaker 1: supposed to be in our timing. But I certainly think
- 29:00Speaker 1: um the world that we live in can definitely keep
- 29:03Speaker 1: us distracted from doing the work right and not focusing
- 29:06Speaker 1: on ourselves and and what we're supposed to do. Wow. Wow, God,
- 29:16Speaker 1: that was so so exquisitely lived and taught. The way
- 29:22Speaker 1: that you shared that that is so beautiful And a
- 29:25Speaker 1: way that I like to frame it UM for myself
- 29:27Speaker 1: is like listening to the whispers, like noticing that feeling
- 29:31Speaker 1: in your body body, noticing that spiritual breadcrumbing that happens,
- 29:36Speaker 1: but not having to have this like anticipatory energy about it,
- 29:40Speaker 1: because sometimes that leads us to self sabotage. That's what
- 29:43Speaker 1: leads us to just pull ourselves out of the calling
- 29:46Speaker 1: and be just an ego about it. When is it
- 29:48Speaker 1: going to happen? How is it going to happen? When
- 29:50Speaker 1: people gonna know about it? Is it gonna am I
- 29:52Speaker 1: gonna feel like this about myself when it does happen?
- 29:54Speaker 1: And we get into all these things that that just
- 29:57Speaker 1: really convolute the purity of how were meant to be
- 30:00Speaker 1: in the world, how we're meant to serve with ease,
- 30:03Speaker 1: with grace, and I love you know when you shared
- 30:07Speaker 1: especially the piece about like having that Vedic astrology reading,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and that is something that I do. I have found,
- 30:13Speaker 1: especially in the last few months I'm speaking about extensively
- 30:16Speaker 1: on this show. What I think is so important about
- 30:19Speaker 1: that is it builds so much of our spiritual confidence.
- 30:23Speaker 1: You know, it really helps us say, Okay, I'm getting
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm getting confirmation that that is real or that's true,
- 30:30Speaker 1: or that thought I had in my mind now God
- 30:32Speaker 1: gifted me someone giving me, giving me a confirmation about
- 30:36Speaker 1: it um, and it makes it easier for us to
- 30:39Speaker 1: really listen, especially to the things we can't fathom, like
- 30:42Speaker 1: if we've had a life that was struggle. You know,
- 30:46Speaker 1: if you had a life that was people didn't celebrate you,
- 30:49Speaker 1: didn't believe you had goodness or greatness in you, or
- 30:52Speaker 1: didn't reflect that to you, so you could see that
- 30:55Speaker 1: in you. It is so hard to feel the weight
- 30:58Speaker 1: of a calling and like you're unworthy of it, you know,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and able to come in and be with people that
- 31:05Speaker 1: really see us, that can reflect what they see in
- 31:09Speaker 1: us to us, not just specifically like oh yeah, you're
- 31:11Speaker 1: a good person, it's like, wow, you hold depth, you
- 31:14Speaker 1: hold strengthen radient being. Like when we can see to
- 31:18Speaker 1: each other with deeper language, when we can have those confirmations,
- 31:23Speaker 1: it builds our our human experience to feel worthy of
- 31:27Speaker 1: our spiritual destiny. That's right, that's right, absolutely, yeah, let
- 31:33Speaker 1: the church say. And it's so powerful because it's like,
- 31:39Speaker 1: imagine what wouldn't be in the world if we didn't
- 31:42Speaker 1: hear the whispers, you know, I was thinking that this morning.
- 31:47Speaker 1: With then I'll just tell a quick story I um
- 31:49Speaker 1: I had. I was switching some stuff around in my
- 31:52Speaker 1: office and so I took this frame down and it
- 31:54Speaker 1: was a framed article from eight years ago. And at
- 31:57Speaker 1: this time, I was I was working in mindfulness, but
- 32:00Speaker 1: I was still very much in my career as like
- 32:02Speaker 1: a broadcaster and a radio personality. And the title of
- 32:06Speaker 1: the article that was in the Sunday paper was Tupac
- 32:09Speaker 1: meets Deepac with l A style. That was eight years ago.
- 32:15Speaker 1: At that I'm from Bordering in l A. But at
- 32:18Speaker 1: that time, I was doing radio in Houston, Texas, and
- 32:21Speaker 1: you know, I was going to retreat that I wasn't
- 32:23Speaker 1: working with Deepac, and I was a SUPERPOC fan. And
- 32:26Speaker 1: then it's like this year, I'm like wow, Like I've
- 32:29Speaker 1: been back in l A for about five years. I
- 32:31Speaker 1: just contributed to a book on Tupac this year that's
- 32:35Speaker 1: coming out this year. And obviously, you know, I work
- 32:38Speaker 1: with my beloved Deepac, and I'm just like the whispers,
- 32:42Speaker 1: the whispers I had. I had no idea years ago,
- 32:47Speaker 1: you know, I had no idea this would be my life.
- 32:50Speaker 1: I did, but I could see it, see it. You know,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I didn't know what you actually look or feel like.
- 32:56Speaker 1: And so I was just I was just feeling grateful,
- 32:58Speaker 1: like I really just said thank you God, and thank
- 33:01Speaker 1: you me, thank you me for hearing the call, for
- 33:04Speaker 1: hearing the whisper and not having to have it all
- 33:07Speaker 1: figured out, and just saying yes, I will, Okay, let's
- 33:10Speaker 1: see where this is going. Yes, yes, yes, say yes,
- 33:16Speaker 1: say yes yes. The eaves comes by, you have to
- 33:20Speaker 1: say yes yes as someone in in such a powerful space.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And you know, when I think of wombwork, when I
- 33:30Speaker 1: think of the work of ushering in life, of helping
- 33:36Speaker 1: a woman expand spiritually and emotionally for such a massive
- 33:42Speaker 1: new life and new being like a mother births herself
- 33:45Speaker 1: as you birth your child, make no mess? Yes, right?
- 33:51Speaker 1: What do you find? Um? What do you find especially
- 33:57Speaker 1: as it relates to the journey of of women, the
- 34:03Speaker 1: journey of women being in their power, which is it
- 34:06Speaker 1: really feels collectively that this is the first time in
- 34:09Speaker 1: human history there's been such a mass of woman being
- 34:14Speaker 1: in her power? What are you doing being? And what
- 34:17Speaker 1: are you what are you holding a sacred in that
- 34:19Speaker 1: experience of you know, full woman being a mother, um, birthing,
- 34:26Speaker 1: growing and growing yourself. You know, I see, I see
- 34:35Speaker 1: many things, um, one of which is that community I
- 34:41Speaker 1: think is so critical and is guiding us to find
- 34:48Speaker 1: each other. Right. So, um, with all the technology, with
- 34:52Speaker 1: all the connection, right, there's there's this feeling of uh
- 34:57Speaker 1: like digital connectivity, um, but but not actual community, right,
- 35:04Speaker 1: like not actual you know, convening and supporting and witnessing
- 35:09Speaker 1: and the ways that we actually evolved for and so UM,
- 35:15Speaker 1: what I see is that people right now um need
- 35:21Speaker 1: essentially to be swaddled right and in community support. I'm
- 35:26Speaker 1: seeing that, you know, women are retreating to rest um
- 35:33Speaker 1: as a primary form of wellness, right, um, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 1: leaning into practices that are fortifying but that are also
- 35:41Speaker 1: about flowing down. Um. I'm seeing a lot of people
- 35:45Speaker 1: actively divest in the structures that have um caused the
- 35:52Speaker 1: need for mental health industrial complex. Um. I'm seeing people
- 35:59Speaker 1: struggle right with also, um what world it is that
- 36:05Speaker 1: they'll be bringing life into? Um so many things. I
- 36:11Speaker 1: feel like in this moment, you know, which is so interesting.
- 36:16Speaker 1: You know, people describe it so intentionally so but really
- 36:22Speaker 1: in a such a coded way, right Like we'll hear
- 36:25Speaker 1: things like, oh, it's such a dark moment, and it's
- 36:27Speaker 1: darkness moment, And I always think of like that being
- 36:31Speaker 1: really a misnomer because darkness is divine and hold on,
- 36:37Speaker 1: sit there there for a second. Darkness is divine darkness.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Darkness is divine. Yes, darkness is divine. And in anything
- 36:55Speaker 1: that takes us in a space where um, where we
- 37:00Speaker 1: do not have the capacity to see what we can
- 37:02Speaker 1: feel our way through um. If we're thinking about the
- 37:07Speaker 1: night time, which gives us, you know, time to rest
- 37:11Speaker 1: and restore our bodies until you know, the sun rises.
- 37:15Speaker 1: If we're thinking about you know, the soil, which is
- 37:20Speaker 1: incredible supports all life systems, and it is dark and
- 37:25Speaker 1: dank and wet and moist and full of microbes and
- 37:29Speaker 1: microorganisms and earthworms and mycilium and incredible roots systems that
- 37:35Speaker 1: support plant life. Right, that also supports our life. If
- 37:39Speaker 1: we think about and that's darkness that grows a seed
- 37:42Speaker 1: into fruition. And we think about the womb, which is darkness,
- 37:49Speaker 1: the womb which is dark which gives you know, forth
- 37:53Speaker 1: the ability for um, something at seed level to take
- 37:58Speaker 1: shape and form into to a human being and emerged
- 38:04Speaker 1: from darkness into the light. Um, it's it's it's divine, right.
- 38:10Speaker 1: And then we think about beings, you know, have that
- 38:14Speaker 1: have been historically UM coded as UM as dark you know,
- 38:24Speaker 1: dark people, black people being you know, coded as bad
- 38:28Speaker 1: and seeing all of the incredible ancestral practices, the healing work,
- 38:33Speaker 1: the incredible contributions UM that we make into this world
- 38:39Speaker 1: right and who we are. It's like darkness is divine
- 38:43Speaker 1: right like like everything. Also that takes us into a
- 38:46Speaker 1: space where we have to reflect on moments of pain,
- 38:51Speaker 1: challenge or triumph. Uh. It it shapes us. It really,
- 38:57Speaker 1: it really retools us, shapes us and wild listen to
- 39:00Speaker 1: someone new, and that's through a period of darkness, right,
- 39:03Speaker 1: that's moving through a portal um. So it's a rebirth,
- 39:06Speaker 1: I think so I think that this is a really
- 39:08Speaker 1: beautiful period of rebirth. I do think that it's a
- 39:11Speaker 1: painful period. I do think that there are a lot
- 39:13Speaker 1: of things that this moment is asking of us. And
- 39:17Speaker 1: to your point about listening, it requires deep listening. This
- 39:22Speaker 1: is a time that we're being asked to listen. I
- 39:24Speaker 1: mean we got sent into the house to listen for
- 39:27Speaker 1: like two years, Like this is going on the second year, right,
- 39:31Speaker 1: we're going into two like a year and a half,
- 39:34Speaker 1: and where we were sent into the house and asked
- 39:38Speaker 1: to sit down and slow down, and what we were
- 39:41Speaker 1: doing was dysfunctional. Sit down and listen, right. Many of
- 39:46Speaker 1: us forced to be, you know, in situations that were
- 39:49Speaker 1: uncomfortable and had to deal with family members, many people
- 39:52Speaker 1: in not safe situations. And so I want to speak
- 39:56Speaker 1: to the fact that like, yes, some people struggle to
- 39:58Speaker 1: people were economically insecure housing and secure food and secure
- 40:02Speaker 1: there are real you know, um. And also without health care,
- 40:05Speaker 1: many people died. So I'm acknowledging the truth in that
- 40:09Speaker 1: as well. And also that there was a divine lesson
- 40:15Speaker 1: for each of us, um if we were ready to
- 40:18Speaker 1: receive it, um, if we were ready to take action,
- 40:22Speaker 1: if we were ready to cultivate. This was a powerful
- 40:25Speaker 1: period of personal growth if you wanted to just date
- 40:28Speaker 1: something and be at home to allow it to anchor
- 40:33Speaker 1: and not have to be in transit and hustling and
- 40:35Speaker 1: going out and whatever, but being at home and and
- 40:38Speaker 1: and starting a practice that allows you to anchor and
- 40:42Speaker 1: and tether and be and be present. Many of us
- 40:46Speaker 1: got outside. Many people got planned. So many people did
- 40:49Speaker 1: all kinds of things to kind of make home really
- 40:52Speaker 1: more habitable for themselves, and a lot of people started
- 40:55Speaker 1: new things, and so I feel like that only just
- 41:00Speaker 1: through the birth space, but this a rebirth of things
- 41:04Speaker 1: that were back Bernard, right, things that you may well
- 41:07Speaker 1: have wanted to do but you never made the time for.
- 41:10Speaker 1: And and and the quarantine you finally did. I saw
- 41:13Speaker 1: a lot of that, and so I felt like, um,
- 41:16Speaker 1: this is a period that was highly potent and that
- 41:19Speaker 1: we could Um. I feel like if you come on
- 41:22Speaker 1: the other side of this experience and it didn't change you,
- 41:26Speaker 1: it didn't touch like like this, we were all touched.
- 41:30Speaker 1: So what way are we going to modify and design
- 41:35Speaker 1: our lives to accommodate the shift? Right? Like? We we can't.
- 41:41Speaker 1: There's no pushing through, there's no you know, like just
- 41:46Speaker 1: keep going, there's no charging through. There's no pretending that
- 41:48Speaker 1: we're not living through a global pandemic. And so how
- 41:52Speaker 1: you going to design your life around the shift and
- 41:56Speaker 1: and really make a space for something completely different and
- 42:03Speaker 1: invite that in and nurture and then grow something new.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I believe that's the invitation and that is reflected in
- 42:10Speaker 1: everything that we see in in in the life cycle
- 42:13Speaker 1: and living things right, and and that's I think, um
- 42:17Speaker 1: important for us to step into in this moment And
- 42:20Speaker 1: and The people who lead the charge for that are
- 42:22Speaker 1: the nurturers, right, The people who lead the charge for
- 42:25Speaker 1: that are the folks who know how to grow something
- 42:27Speaker 1: from the seed level and sustain it until it's ready
- 42:31Speaker 1: to grow, like to bloom. And that's the caregivers. That's
- 42:36Speaker 1: the mothers, that's the folks who that's the grandmothers, as
- 42:39Speaker 1: the aunties does. Those are the people who are the
- 42:40Speaker 1: crux of community, who helped to hold the universe together
- 42:44Speaker 1: by their fingertips um to make sure nothing falls out
- 42:48Speaker 1: of place. And so we're all being called to, I think,
- 42:53Speaker 1: really leading to our caregiving capacity. Regardless of how you identify,
- 42:59Speaker 1: you know, we're all being called to mother and nurture
- 43:02Speaker 1: and and we're all being called to, really, I believe,
- 43:07Speaker 1: come closer. Even at a time we're being asked to
- 43:10Speaker 1: be physically distant, um, socially distant, all these things. I
- 43:14Speaker 1: do believe it's a time for us to find ways
- 43:17Speaker 1: to minimize that distance and and maximize our connection. Beautiful,
- 43:22Speaker 1: thank you, thank you. Wow I everything that you just
- 43:28Speaker 1: said I feel such a deep alignment to and it
- 43:31Speaker 1: really um it even it makes me emotional on this
- 43:35Speaker 1: moment because I remember the freedom I felt when I
- 43:40Speaker 1: first realized that darkness could be my light that I
- 43:46Speaker 1: found and just embracing what was embracing sometimes the darker path.
- 43:52Speaker 1: And at the time that I fell into that, it
- 43:55Speaker 1: I didn't see that anywhere. You know. It was terrifying
- 43:58Speaker 1: and it was revolutionary. It was everyone was only focused
- 44:02Speaker 1: on positive mindset, positive mindset, love and light. You got
- 44:06Speaker 1: to tell yourself about things, and it's like, yeah, but
- 44:09Speaker 1: you have to remove the camps are first. You can't
- 44:11Speaker 1: just pile on nice verbs and adjectives and descriptives on
- 44:17Speaker 1: top of a pile of rot, you know, like we
- 44:20Speaker 1: have to excavate all of that, all of those experience,
- 44:24Speaker 1: all of that against nous itself, and then from that pure,
- 44:29Speaker 1: emptied vessel we refill with what is really us, what
- 44:33Speaker 1: is for us. Then it reminds me of the Roomy quote.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Um that I mean Roomy the poet changed everything, I
- 44:41Speaker 1: mean everything everything, But when he said, you know, darkness
- 44:46Speaker 1: is your candle, there is some light in that, and
- 44:49Speaker 1: and allowing yourself not to get lost in it, but
- 44:53Speaker 1: to just take a look around what is in that
- 44:56Speaker 1: dark Let me observe, you know, let me shine the
- 45:01Speaker 1: light on in here. And that I have this like
- 45:04Speaker 1: you know I have. I have all the questions for
- 45:06Speaker 1: you like them. I had this long lis um, but
- 45:10Speaker 1: the thing that really dropped into my head as you
- 45:13Speaker 1: were talking, and I feel like I have to I
- 45:15Speaker 1: have to ask it because there must be people that
- 45:18Speaker 1: need to hear this from you, For women, for any
- 45:22Speaker 1: women listening, any parents listening that are preparing for parenthood
- 45:28Speaker 1: that don't feel worthy of it, that don't feel worthy
- 45:31Speaker 1: of it because of the experiences that have happened to them.
- 45:35Speaker 1: M H. What would be a way to start um
- 45:42Speaker 1: redefining what you can be as a parent, especially if
- 45:46Speaker 1: you came from a family of origin that was not
- 45:54Speaker 1: serving for lack of a better word, right, or left
- 45:56Speaker 1: you with a lot of a lot of your dramas
- 46:00Speaker 1: that you swim through. Sometimes we feel unworthy of the
- 46:03Speaker 1: parenting journey, and then you can without meaning to. You
- 46:07Speaker 1: walk in with the best intentions, but without meaning to
- 46:09Speaker 1: you self sabotage because it's also one of the most
- 46:12Speaker 1: triggering journeys. Your child is the biggest reflective mirror of
- 46:16Speaker 1: your existence. How anything that you have for how someone
- 46:22Speaker 1: getting ready to start this journey can really show up
- 46:25Speaker 1: at it? Um in a way that honors them and
- 46:28Speaker 1: honors their child. Wow. Um, I should start by saying,
- 46:36Speaker 1: I'm still in the journey. I have an eighteen year
- 46:38Speaker 1: old son, and uh, Debbie and I were speaking before
- 46:43Speaker 1: about how you just like never really get used to
- 46:47Speaker 1: the fact, Like I still don't get used to the
- 46:49Speaker 1: fact that he's here. Like even when I thought that,
- 46:53Speaker 1: like there will be a time, you know, when he
- 46:56Speaker 1: was a little, little little I would hover over him,
- 46:58Speaker 1: make sure he was breathing, you know, when they're tying
- 47:00Speaker 1: me and you're like, oh my god, oh my god,
- 47:01Speaker 1: oh my god. And even still he'll sleep and I'll
- 47:04Speaker 1: just hover over him and watch him. It doesn't it
- 47:08Speaker 1: doesn't end. He's eighteen, okay. So I would serve by
- 47:12Speaker 1: saying that, UM. You know, we UM. A lot of
- 47:18Speaker 1: us exit childhood UM in need of things that we
- 47:24Speaker 1: didn't receive from the primary care providers we had. And
- 47:28Speaker 1: for some of us, UM, it was more structure, attention
- 47:32Speaker 1: UM love UM. And for others of us who might
- 47:38Speaker 1: have been smothered and had too much attention, too much
- 47:42Speaker 1: restrictiveness UM. And then some exited where there was violence
- 47:46Speaker 1: and belittling and and so and combinations of all those
- 47:50Speaker 1: things and so UM, right, Like, one thing that's really
- 47:54Speaker 1: important is to understand, and I think that all parents
- 47:58Speaker 1: should understand this is that UM, like what happened to you, UM,
- 48:04Speaker 1: the things that occurred in your life, UM, are not
- 48:07Speaker 1: the some of who you are. And so because you
- 48:11Speaker 1: might have been UM mistreated or the people who were
- 48:17Speaker 1: intended to take care of you UM did their best
- 48:21Speaker 1: or did not have the capacity to do their best. UM,
- 48:25Speaker 1: you know, it doesn't mean that the next time when
- 48:29Speaker 1: it becomes your time, that you won't do a good
- 48:32Speaker 1: job at it, or that you don't deserve to have
- 48:36Speaker 1: a parenting relationship that is fulfilling. I. UM. I can
- 48:42Speaker 1: definitely say that there are things that I lived through
- 48:44Speaker 1: in my childhood that I did not want to repeat
- 48:47Speaker 1: and that I was so conscientious of. And one of
- 48:52Speaker 1: the first things I would say is if you're partnered,
- 48:55Speaker 1: to make sure that you have discussions UM. And even
- 48:58Speaker 1: if you're not partnered, whatever were the family configuration that
- 49:02Speaker 1: your child will be born into that everybody's on the
- 49:05Speaker 1: same page about parenting style because UM, you know, I
- 49:11Speaker 1: was really clear with my son's father, and he was
- 49:14Speaker 1: really clear with me that we would not be um,
- 49:18Speaker 1: physically hitting our child. And I'm someone who grew up
- 49:21Speaker 1: spanked whoopings as we called it, right, like getting getting
- 49:26Speaker 1: whooped and and I remember reading something as an adult
- 49:32Speaker 1: actually about what constitutes abuse, and I was reading a
- 49:37Speaker 1: list and I was like, oh my god, I experienced
- 49:39Speaker 1: all these things as a child, right, and not realizing
- 49:42Speaker 1: or having language for those experiences and being able to say, hey,
- 49:46Speaker 1: this was not okay. And as a child, you know
- 49:50Speaker 1: it's not right, but you're not actually in a position
- 49:52Speaker 1: to be able to advocate for yourself because you're a child.
- 49:56Speaker 1: And so what that does to a child is, UM,
- 50:01Speaker 1: it actually makes it really challenging or incapacitates them in
- 50:06Speaker 1: certain ways to be able to self actualized. And so UM,
- 50:12Speaker 1: we're supposed to have our human needs met through the
- 50:15Speaker 1: folks who take care of us and UM, and that
- 50:18Speaker 1: starts at a at a basic level when you're born. UM.
- 50:23Speaker 1: An infant learns within the first few hours of life
- 50:26Speaker 1: whether or not the world is a safe place. And
- 50:29Speaker 1: it learns that, UM primarily through connection. If there is
- 50:34Speaker 1: a buffering adult presence, like it's mother or a birthing person,
- 50:38Speaker 1: or you know, a family member who's holding them that
- 50:42Speaker 1: is how a baby knows that it's safe. Um, we
- 50:45Speaker 1: are hardwired for connection. We cannot survive individually. So this
- 50:51Speaker 1: idea of rugged individualism, and you know, training your children
- 50:55Speaker 1: to be independent, they're not independent, their interdependent beings. They
- 50:59Speaker 1: are social beings. They depend on you. That's where they're
- 51:02Speaker 1: called dependence. Um, they depend on you. And and there's
- 51:07Speaker 1: no amount of um of like you know, I guess like, um,
- 51:15Speaker 1: I don't know what to even call this training. I
- 51:17Speaker 1: guess that will unhook this primal need and actually make
- 51:25Speaker 1: them be somehow self sufficient. So they're not designed to
- 51:29Speaker 1: be that way. And so some of the things that
- 51:31Speaker 1: we can stop doing now right and stop repeating now
- 51:35Speaker 1: that I'm really I would love a lot of parents
- 51:37Speaker 1: to interrogate because of sort of how we've been raised
- 51:43Speaker 1: and things that we've been embodied. So in our community specifically,
- 51:47Speaker 1: there's this whole idea about spoiling your children. Oh, don't
- 51:49Speaker 1: pick up the baby, you'll spoil it. Don't do this right.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And what I can say is that you cannot spoil
- 51:54Speaker 1: a child. You cannot spoil a child. What you can
- 51:57Speaker 1: do is is prime them with emotional intelligence and with
- 52:03Speaker 1: self confidence. You can prime them with a sense of
- 52:09Speaker 1: connection and community. You can help them to UH neurologically
- 52:15Speaker 1: develop through connection and through touch. UM you can help
- 52:19Speaker 1: them to understand what positive um stress looks like versus
- 52:25Speaker 1: toxic stress. You can help them to also develop their
- 52:29Speaker 1: capacity to heal UM and you can also help to
- 52:35Speaker 1: heal the genetic blueprint of your own lineage through raising
- 52:42Speaker 1: through from birth, from pregnancy, right so so because the
- 52:45Speaker 1: wound was the first environment, right, so, from pregnancy, through
- 52:49Speaker 1: birth and the childhood period, you can change the legacy.
- 52:55Speaker 1: You do not have to do it how it was
- 52:56Speaker 1: done to you. You not have to spank or leave
- 52:59Speaker 1: your kid in a container or whatever. You can wear
- 53:02Speaker 1: your baby, you can hold your baby, you can nurse
- 53:06Speaker 1: your baby or bottle feet or whatever you're doing. But
- 53:08Speaker 1: you can you can support this human being that's dependent
- 53:11Speaker 1: upon you. I always teach that UM. You know, it's
- 53:14Speaker 1: like ten months, really ten moons of intributor ingestations, So
- 53:20Speaker 1: ten moons inside the body and ten moons on onto
- 53:23Speaker 1: the body outside the body, onto the body, right, and
- 53:27Speaker 1: so this your chest becomes the external wound. Right the
- 53:33Speaker 1: breasts or this plate which can by the way, by temperature,
- 53:38Speaker 1: can adjust to heat and cool the baby as necessary. Right,
- 53:43Speaker 1: that becomes the external wound to look after the baby
- 53:47Speaker 1: for the next ten months, because as we know, they
- 53:50Speaker 1: don't start really being able to move around. They start
- 53:53Speaker 1: walking kind of ten eleven, twelve months, their teen months,
- 53:56Speaker 1: but before ten months they really need to be held.
- 53:59Speaker 1: And so we we have to kind of orient ourselves
- 54:03Speaker 1: around the fact that this is how community was designed, right,
- 54:08Speaker 1: so to care for the children, and that, by the way,
- 54:12Speaker 1: it wasn't just solely on the mom or on the women.
- 54:16Speaker 1: It was actually an intra community experience and men will
- 54:20Speaker 1: were also caregivers. And um, it's also very interesting to
- 54:24Speaker 1: note that we have science for that to show that
- 54:26Speaker 1: like even fathers or partners, right if um, if you
- 54:30Speaker 1: have a male partner, for instance, um, his testosterone levels
- 54:34Speaker 1: drop significantly, right, but at least thirty five sometimes fort
- 54:40Speaker 1: towards the end of a pregnancy to start to accommodate
- 54:44Speaker 1: the ability to caregive. And yeah, and actually he develops estrogen.
- 54:48Speaker 1: M estrogen, estrogen, estrogen, he develops estrogen. So these things
- 54:53Speaker 1: are because caregiving is in all of our capacity. So
- 54:58Speaker 1: I would I would remember at like we all can
- 55:01Speaker 1: bring something to the lives of these little ones, whether
- 55:04Speaker 1: you're a parent, whether you're somebody who's going to co parent, adopt,
- 55:09Speaker 1: whether you're someone who's just in the life of children,
- 55:12Speaker 1: that we have to treat them humanely. We cannot treat
- 55:16Speaker 1: them like their property. They're on loan to us. They're
- 55:20Speaker 1: on loan to us, right, and so we need to
- 55:23Speaker 1: we need to take care of them and understand that
- 55:25Speaker 1: children are our guides, you know. I see my son
- 55:27Speaker 1: is like somebody. I just hold his hand and I'm like,
- 55:30Speaker 1: you know, just there to gently guide as we cross
- 55:32Speaker 1: the river together. And I'm like, okay, watch your step
- 55:34Speaker 1: and I'm not here to pull him this way or
- 55:37Speaker 1: that way or tell him where to go, but to
- 55:39Speaker 1: just listen and and nurture and love and protect. And
- 55:45Speaker 1: they have to know that you're safe. They have to
- 55:47Speaker 1: know that you're a safe space. Because if we develop
- 55:51Speaker 1: a relationship whereby um, we dictate that we're a power,
- 55:56Speaker 1: you know, force in their life, and that you know,
- 56:00Speaker 1: um um, we're like a punitive you know force in
- 56:04Speaker 1: their life, we model the systems that actually keep us
- 56:08Speaker 1: from being free. And so we don't want to police
- 56:11Speaker 1: our children. We don't want them to feel unsafe in
- 56:15Speaker 1: the world. We don't want them to feel unsafe in
- 56:16Speaker 1: the home. And we don't want to model white supremacist
- 56:20Speaker 1: patriarchy in our homes by touching them and appropriately by
- 56:24Speaker 1: hitting them, by by punishing them in ways that are
- 56:28Speaker 1: not constructive and um. And we don't certainly want to
- 56:32Speaker 1: make them feel like they have, like they're confined. And
- 56:35Speaker 1: so children have to be able to feel like they
- 56:37Speaker 1: can live into possibility that they can imagine and um.
- 56:43Speaker 1: One of the biggest disservices that happens to our children
- 56:46Speaker 1: is that like that capacity for imagination and for possibility
- 56:50Speaker 1: and who they can become gets squandered and gets shut
- 56:55Speaker 1: down because of adults that don't realize how impactful there
- 56:59Speaker 1: were and their actions are. And so we just have
- 57:03Speaker 1: to be so mindful and um. You know this is
- 57:07Speaker 1: on the heels of of debby being a part of
- 57:10Speaker 1: roll Mental Health Day and UM and doing a lot
- 57:13Speaker 1: of work around this this exact topic. It's important to
- 57:17Speaker 1: do your your work and you know, seek out license
- 57:20Speaker 1: mental health support before the baby arrives, before you even
- 57:24Speaker 1: if you can do this before you're thinking about getting pregnant,
- 57:26Speaker 1: like really go through your life and really assess where
- 57:29Speaker 1: you need to heal the mother wound, where you need
- 57:32Speaker 1: to heal other aspects of childhood where you need to
- 57:36Speaker 1: address like issues with your father or other people in
- 57:40Speaker 1: your life and UM. And then also the biggest piece
- 57:44Speaker 1: for me that has been so important is you know,
- 57:47Speaker 1: like lean into your practices that help you to build resilience,
- 57:53Speaker 1: that help you to UM. You know, like I think
- 57:56Speaker 1: about somatic healing is a big piece of how we
- 57:59Speaker 1: get on the other side, because the wounds that we
- 58:02Speaker 1: have are not that not things that just were talked through, Like,
- 58:07Speaker 1: these are things that happened and and live in ourselves
- 58:10Speaker 1: and our tissues. And like they say that issues are
- 58:12Speaker 1: in your tissues, right, if we can bring those issues
- 58:15Speaker 1: to surface and find the practices that work for you.
- 58:18Speaker 1: If it's twerking, if it's if it's singing, if it's right,
- 58:22Speaker 1: like I think it's working in health care practice right,
- 58:25Speaker 1: like whatever it is right, like move your body moving
- 58:28Speaker 1: through you saying meditate, like do what you need to
- 58:32Speaker 1: do to move stuff through you. Also, and know that
- 58:35Speaker 1: those practices that we have ancestrally can help us to UM.
- 58:39Speaker 1: So you don't have to just go to a license
- 58:41Speaker 1: mental health provider. I think it's important to distinguish that
- 58:46Speaker 1: um Mental health providers help us to process right. They
- 58:49Speaker 1: help us to process, contextualize, And the only way to
- 58:53Speaker 1: heal is to like actually work through the body. The
- 58:56Speaker 1: body is a conduit for healing. So find your healing
- 59:00Speaker 1: practices that that resonate for you, find the people who
- 59:04Speaker 1: resonate for you, and and make sure that once these
- 59:07Speaker 1: children arrived, that you maintain those practices and that you
- 59:10Speaker 1: bring in the support systems that you need to help
- 59:12Speaker 1: me maintain those practices. This is why doula work is
- 59:15Speaker 1: so important, because we can help bridge those gaps for
- 59:17Speaker 1: people too. But this is critical for us to do
- 59:21Speaker 1: because it's not fair when when children come and and
- 59:25Speaker 1: they leave these lives where they they could have had
- 59:29Speaker 1: more right, Like a lot of us can think back
- 59:31Speaker 1: to things that we probably like I think about stumbling blocks,
- 59:34Speaker 1: right that I just would have avoided had I been
- 59:37Speaker 1: held a certain way, right, And so we we all
- 59:41Speaker 1: deserve that. So if we can do the work, and
- 59:43Speaker 1: I love the question because if we can do the work,
- 59:45Speaker 1: I think it's amazing. Most of us just find ourselves.
- 59:48Speaker 1: I found myself pregnant, like we didn't plan it, but
- 59:50Speaker 1: Messa was definitely wanted, but it wasn't like I had
- 59:52Speaker 1: all this time to like really map it all out.
- 59:56Speaker 1: But what I will say is you have freaking forty weeks.
- 59:59Speaker 1: It's ten months, right, So even if you find yourself pregnant,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: you have ten months to really like hook in and
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: decide like how you want to show up to the
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: experience and who you want to become. On the other side, Rocking,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: that was such a powerful, full answer, and there is
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: wow to further echo everything that you said. Um, some
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: questions popped up in my mind that those listening that
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: are really really resonating with what we're speaking to. I
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: have three journal prompts that you may enjoy everyone. UM,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: I gotta pens. I'm ready and I'm thinking, I'm thinking
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: for for this, for these prompts, for this soul work.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: You know this can us in service even if you
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: are not a parent and have no plans to be
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: to nourish, nurturing and reparenting your own self. UM, we
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: don't on a human cognitive level choose our circumstance. On
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a spiritual level, I very much believe we do, um,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: but we are in charge of our healing. And I
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: think sometimes what keeps us from our healing, especially in
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: deeper trauma, is we think that to acknowledge it means
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that we're taking responsibility for it, for the things that happened,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: for the things that we didn't want to know. And
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: so I just want to express to everyone listening as
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I unload these questions, as you really kind of unpack
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: the depth of wisdom that Latham just shared with you.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Um and you can revisit this episode, pause, rewind, send it,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: but really think whether these questions are relive it to
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: you for your reparenting journey, or these are things to
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: just really start leaning into. And you don't have to
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: do it perfectly. Generally doesn't have to be done dear
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: diary style. It can be bullet point, may be one word,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: it can be you know, just all the things out.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: But when you think about how you were parented, the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: first journal prompt would be I want you to sit
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: and think what did I need? What did I need?
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: And start writing that down slowly, And you don't have
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: to do it all at once, come back to it
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: over a week, over a couple of weeks, But what
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: did I need? At a deeper deeper level than maybe
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: just the shoes. But if that was a need, if
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: that was a neglecting in your life, write that down.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: What did I need? The second question, to just sit
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: with an experience, would be what did I deserve? M?
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: What did I deserve? What did deserve to know? What
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: did I deserve to have access to? What did I
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: deserve to feel? Because you are a worthy being now
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: in this moment, irregardless of life circumstances, what I deserve
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: mm hmm. And then the third question, and this one
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: go gently, but keep going. What hurt me? M M?
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: What hurt me? What did I experience in my life
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: that hurt me? And there's no hierarchy to pain, So
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: even if you did not, you know, experience physical abuse,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: there are other things that hurt you. Right, was there
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: a time that you weren't fully seen where you were
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: excited and passionate about something and it wasn't noticed? You
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: know what hurt you? And then as you spend time
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: with this over a period of time, and I want
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: you to keep these pages everyone whatever you journal too,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: and you can really track your progress as you work
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: through these thoughts, you get the opportunity to reverse engineer
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: a childhood, for the person, for the human being, for
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: the soul that you bring forward. This is how you
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: find the quote unquote better way to do it. This
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: is how you find your power. This is how you
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: find the ability to show up in a way that
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: was not modeled for you. Yeah. Yeah, So spend time
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: with that everyone, if it feels like it resonates late them.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I am so grateful for your time today. Thank you
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: for your life, thank you for all that you do
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: in the world, thank you for your wisdom, and thank
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: you for sharing this space with me. Debby. I'm still
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: on the reflections. I'm still sitting with the reflections, and
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: I know that those listening are sitting with those action still. UM.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I mean I could visualize something like not even just
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: you know in my mind think through the words that came,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: but I could see instances in my life, right, especially
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: for the last one, I could see an instance in
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: my life. And and so I just wanna underscore the
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: power of the prompts and the invitation, right like to
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: be in a space with UM a guide. I mean,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: this is like having your own you know vision dula
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: here through dervy to UM you know, surface for yourself
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: what it is that that you need to reveal, but
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: also what it is that you need to he ll,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: what is it you need to become. And so it's
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: such a blessing to first of all to be in
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: community with you, but also to see the delicate nature
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: in which you are handling those UM approaching this space.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Because the entry point has to be UM, you have
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: to approach it with such precision but also with such gentleness,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: right and and that is what you're getting here, is
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: like the tenderness and the love and the and the
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: precision in in like knowing exactly where to direct that
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: questioning for us to be in relationship with ourselves, you know,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: with with our stories, with our bodies, um and and
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: for the purpose of like growth, right Like. I think
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: it's such a blessing, you know, to be able to
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: be UM, you have to be able to be held
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: in that way, you know, And so I just gave thanks.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I think, you know, there's there's so many spaces that
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: y'all could be listening and being, but UM, I think
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: that every opportunity that I've had to be in community
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: or sheer space or just witness how Debbie shows up,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: it's always in a way where UM, she's carrying you UM,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: you know and with the intention of you know, making
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: sure that when she places you down gently, that you're
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: better off and UM. And so I thank you for
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: holding and having the capacity to hold and um and
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: for being a powerful skate space keeper and wisdom keeper
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: and mother and healer and diviner. Um. I'm priest is
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: you know like you bring so much magic and you
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: model also what we need to see more of in
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the world. And so I give thanks for you. UM.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: I asked that you continue to be blessed and UM,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: that you and your family continue to thrive, and that
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: you're continuously feeling supported and fortified to shine your light
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: with evanescent warmth to have the impact of healing. And
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I thank you for the opportunity to be in community
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: with you and be witnessed by you through your lens.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: And just thank you again for the beautiful um, just
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: the beautiful wave that we were able to ride today
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and and um and also to allow me to be
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: a part of the prompting because those are questions that
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: we can never we can never ask ourselves enough right
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: and in certain days, like DEVI said, you can come
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: back and you'll find that you can bring something else up.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: But everything that comes up and everything that we can
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: feel can can help us. He also, I'm so thankful
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to you. Thank you. Thank I'm so thankful God. Thank
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: you for the way you just spoke over my life.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Thank you for seeing me, thank you for reflecting that
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: back to me. M m mm hmm. God help me.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love you, love you.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I know me too. I can't wait. I'm like, I
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: don't even know what it means to say like seeing
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: people soon, because what is this? What is life right now? Like?
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: What is life right? We're like, you know, it's i'll
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: see you, but you know what it's us do. It's
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: like when we say okay, yeah, i'll see you like now,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: it like really makes us think about like the moments
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: that we still took for granted with being outside and
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: seeing somebody like i'll see you next week or I'll
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: go i'll see you at the next event or now
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: it's like wow, right, like you know where it's not
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: just the zoom, it's like no, people want to like
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: see people and be you with people and touch their
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: hands and feel their pulse and feel their warmth. And
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: and yeah, so I can't wait for us to do
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: that and just like hug it up, thug it out
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: in the street with tears, hugging. Next time you're in
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: l A or I'm in New York, we have a
