Speaker 1: Chapter eleven. What I heard in the apple barrel, No not,
0:07
Speaker 1: I said, Silver Flint was cap'n. I was quite a
0:12
Speaker 1: master along of my timber leg the same side I
0:16
Speaker 1: lost my leg. Old Pew lost his daylights. It was
0:20
Speaker 1: a master surgeon him that amputated me out of college,
0:25
Speaker 1: and all Latin by their bucket and what not. But
0:29
Speaker 1: he was hanged like a dog and sun droid like
0:32
Speaker 1: the rest at Corso Castle. That was Robert's men, that was,
0:38
Speaker 1: and comed of changing names to their ships, Royal Fortune
0:43
Speaker 1: and so on. Now what a ship was christened? So
0:47
Speaker 1: let her stay? I says. So it was with the
0:51
Speaker 1: Cassandra as brought us all sat home from Malabar after
0:56
Speaker 1: England took the viceroy of the Indies. So it was
1:00
Speaker 1: with the old Walrus, Flint's old ship, as I've seen him,
1:05
Speaker 1: with the red blood and fit to sink with gold. Ah,
1:11
Speaker 1: cried another voice, that of the youngest hand on board,
1:15
Speaker 1: and evidently full of admiration. He was the flower of
1:19
Speaker 1: the flock, was Flint. Davis was a man too, by
1:23
Speaker 1: all accounts, said Silver. I never sailed alonger him, first
1:30
Speaker 1: with England, then with Flint. That's my story. And now
1:34
Speaker 1: here on my own account, in a manner o speaking,
1:37
Speaker 1: I laid by nine hundred safe from England in two
1:41
Speaker 1: thousand and a half to Flint. They ain't bad for
1:44
Speaker 1: a man before the mast, I'll safe in bank. Tain't
1:49
Speaker 1: earning now it's saving, does it? You made later that
1:54
Speaker 1: where's all England's men? Now? I dun'no, where's Flint's why
2:00
Speaker 1: most of them are board here and glad to get
2:02
Speaker 1: the duff being begging before that? Some of them, oh
2:07
Speaker 1: pure as has lust his sight and might have thought
2:11
Speaker 1: shame spelling twelve hundred pounds in a year like a
2:15
Speaker 1: lord in parliament whereas he now, well he's dead now
2:20
Speaker 1: and under hatches. But for two years before that, shiver
2:25
Speaker 1: my timbers, the man was starving. He begged, and he stole,
2:29
Speaker 1: and he cut throats and starved at that by the powers.
2:35
Speaker 1: Well it ain't much use after all, said the young seamen.
2:39
Speaker 1: Ta't much use for fools. You may lay to it
2:42
Speaker 1: that know, nothing, cried silver. But now you look here.
2:47
Speaker 1: You're young, you are, but you're smart as paint. I
2:52
Speaker 1: see that. When I set my eyes on you, and
2:55
Speaker 1: I'll talk to you like a man, you can imagine
2:59
Speaker 1: how I felt when I heard this abominable old rogue
3:02
Speaker 1: addressing another in the very same words of flattery he
3:07
Speaker 1: had used to myself. I think, if I had been able,
3:10
Speaker 1: that I would have killed him through the barrel. Meantime
3:13
Speaker 1: he ran on little, supposing he was overheard. Here it
3:17
Speaker 1: is about gentlemen of fortune. They lives rough, and they
3:22
Speaker 1: risk swinging, but they eat and drink like fighting cocks.
3:27
Speaker 1: And when a cruise is done, why it's hundreds of
3:30
Speaker 1: pounds instead of hundreds of fathings in their pockets. Now
3:34
Speaker 1: the most goals for rum and a good fling, and
3:37
Speaker 1: to see again in their shirts. But that's not the
3:41
Speaker 1: corse I lay. He puts it all away, some here,
3:46
Speaker 1: some there, and none too much anywhere, As by reason
3:49
Speaker 1: of suspicion, I'm fifty mark you once back from this cruise.
3:55
Speaker 1: I set up gentlemen in earnest time. Enough too, says you. Ah.
4:01
Speaker 1: But I've lived easy in the meantime, never denied myself
4:05
Speaker 1: and nothing the heart desires, and slept soft and ate
4:09
Speaker 1: daity all my days. But when at sea, and how
4:12
Speaker 1: did I begin before the mast? Like you well said
4:18
Speaker 1: the other. But all the other money's gone now, ain't it.
4:21
Speaker 1: You didn't show facing Bristol after this, Why where might
4:26
Speaker 1: you suppose it? Was, asked Silver derisively. Bristol in banks
4:32
Speaker 1: and places, answered his companion. It were, said the cook,
4:38
Speaker 1: it were when we weighed Anchor. But my old missus
4:42
Speaker 1: as it are by now, and the spyglasses sold leasts
4:46
Speaker 1: and goodwill and rigging, and the old girls off to
4:49
Speaker 1: meet me. I will tell you where, mate, for I
4:53
Speaker 1: trust you, but it'd make jealousy among the mates. And
4:58
Speaker 1: you can trust your missus, asked the other gentlemen of fortune,
5:04
Speaker 1: returned the cook usually trust little among themselves, And right
5:09
Speaker 1: they are. You may lay to it, but I have
5:12
Speaker 1: a way with me. I have when a mate brings
5:15
Speaker 1: a slip on his cable, one as knows me, I
5:19
Speaker 1: mean it won't be in the same world with old John.
5:23
Speaker 1: There were some that was feared of Pew, and some
5:27
Speaker 1: that was feared of Flint. But Flint his own self
5:33
Speaker 1: was feared of me. Feared he was, and proud they was.
5:38
Speaker 1: The roughest crew of float was Flint's. The devil himself
5:43
Speaker 1: would have been feared to go to sea with them. Well,
5:48
Speaker 1: now I tell you I'm not a boasting man, and
5:51
Speaker 1: you've seen yourself how easy I keep company. But when
5:56
Speaker 1: I was quite a master, Lambs wasn't the word for
6:00
Speaker 1: Flint's old buccaneers. Ah, you may be sure of yourself
6:04
Speaker 1: in old John's ship. Well I tell you now, replied
6:10
Speaker 1: the lad. I didn't half a quarter like a job
6:13
Speaker 1: till I had this talk with you John. But there's
6:16
Speaker 1: my hand on it now, And a brave large you were,
6:20
Speaker 1: and smart too, answered Silver, shaking hands so heartily that
6:26
Speaker 1: all the barrel shook, And a finer figurehead for a
6:30
Speaker 1: gentleman of fortune I never clapped the eyes on. By
6:35
Speaker 1: this time I had begun to understand the meaning of
6:37
Speaker 1: their terms. By a gentleman of fortune, they plainly meant
6:42
Speaker 1: neither more nor less than a common pirate. And the
6:45
Speaker 1: little scene that I had overheard was the last act
6:48
Speaker 1: in the corruption of one of the honest hands, perhaps
6:51
Speaker 1: of the last one left aboard. But on this point
6:54
Speaker 1: I was soon to be relieved. For Silver, giving a
6:58
Speaker 1: little whistle, a third man's rolled up and sat down
7:01
Speaker 1: by the party. Dick Square said Silver, Oh, I know
7:07
Speaker 1: Dick was Square, returned the voice of the cocksin Israel hands.
7:12
Speaker 1: He's no fool, is dick. He turned his quid and spat.
7:16
Speaker 1: But look here, he went on, here's what I want
7:20
Speaker 1: to know, barbecue. How long are we are going to
7:24
Speaker 1: stand off and on like a blessed bumboat. I've had
7:28
Speaker 1: almost enough, a Captain Smollett, He's hazed me long enough
7:32
Speaker 1: by thunder. I want to go into that cabin I do.
7:36
Speaker 1: I want their pickles and wines, and that he is.
7:40
Speaker 1: Rael said Silver. You ed ain't much a colt, nor
7:45
Speaker 1: never was, but you're able to hear. I reckon lest ways,
7:49
Speaker 1: your ears is big enough. Now he is what I say,
7:53
Speaker 1: your birth forehead, and you'll live hard, and you'll speak soft,
7:59
Speaker 1: and you'll keep sober till I give the word, and
8:03
Speaker 1: you may lead to that. My son. Well, I don't
8:08
Speaker 1: say no, do, I growled the Coxswain. What I say
8:11
Speaker 1: is when that's what I say when by the powers
8:17
Speaker 1: cried Silver. Well, Now, if you want to know, I'll
8:21
Speaker 1: tell you when the last moment I can manage. And
8:26
Speaker 1: that's when. Here's the first rate seaman, cap'n Smollett sails
8:31
Speaker 1: the blessed ship for us. Here's this squire and doctor.
8:36
Speaker 1: We are map and such. I don't know where it is,
8:40
Speaker 1: do I no more to you, says you. Well, then
8:44
Speaker 1: I mean this squire in doctor shall find the stuff
8:48
Speaker 1: and help us to get it aboard by the powers.
8:51
Speaker 1: Then we'll see. If I was sure of you, all
8:56
Speaker 1: sons a double dutchman, i'd have cap'n Smollett navigate us
9:00
Speaker 1: halfway back again before I struck. Why we're all seeming
9:05
Speaker 1: aboard here, I should think, said the lad dick. We're
9:09
Speaker 1: all folks'll hand you mean snapped silver. We can steer
9:14
Speaker 1: a course, but oo's to set one. That's what all
9:17
Speaker 1: you gentlemen spit on first and last. If I had
9:22
Speaker 1: my way, i'd have cap'n Smollett work us back into
9:25
Speaker 1: the trades. At least. Then we'd have no blessed miscalculations
9:30
Speaker 1: and a spoonful of water a day. But I know
9:34
Speaker 1: the sort you are. I'll finish with them at the
9:37
Speaker 1: island as soon as the blunt's on board. And a
9:40
Speaker 1: pity it is, but you're never happy till you're drunk.
9:44
Speaker 1: Split my sides. I've a sick heart to sail with
9:48
Speaker 1: the like, say you easy all, Old John cried Israel.
9:52
Speaker 1: Who's a crossing of you? Why how many tall ships think?
9:58
Speaker 1: Ye n her voice seen laid aboard, and how many
10:02
Speaker 1: brisk lads draw in the sewn execution, Duck cried Silver,
10:08
Speaker 1: and all for the same. Hurry and hurry and hurry
10:11
Speaker 1: you hear me. I've seen a thing or two at sea.
10:15
Speaker 1: I have. If you would only lay your cars and
10:19
Speaker 1: a point the windward, you would ride in carriages, you would,
10:23
Speaker 1: But not you. I know you. You'll have your milk full
10:27
Speaker 1: of rum tomorrow and go hang. Everybody know that you
10:32
Speaker 1: was a kind of a chaplain John. But there's others
10:36
Speaker 1: who could hand and steer as well as you, said, Israel.
10:40
Speaker 1: They liked a bit of fun. They did. They wasn't
10:44
Speaker 1: so high and dry, nohow, but took their fling like
10:47
Speaker 1: jolly companions. Everyone so said Silver. Well, and where are they?
10:54
Speaker 1: Nail Pew was that sort and he died a beggar man,
10:59
Speaker 1: Flint was and he died of rum at Savannah. They
11:04
Speaker 1: was a sweet crew. They was only where are they?
11:09
Speaker 1: But asked Dick, when we do lay them athwart? What
11:13
Speaker 1: are we going to do with him? Anyhow? There is
11:16
Speaker 1: the man for me, cried the cook admiringly. That's what
11:20
Speaker 1: I call business. Well, what would you think put them ashore,
11:25
Speaker 1: look maroons that would have been England's way, or cut
11:29
Speaker 1: him down like that much pork that would have been flints,
11:34
Speaker 1: or billy bones. Billy was the man for that, said Israel.
11:39
Speaker 1: Dead men don't buy it, says he. Well, he's dead
11:43
Speaker 1: now hisself. He knows the long and short on it now.
11:47
Speaker 1: And if ever a rough hen come to port, it
11:51
Speaker 1: was Billy right, you are, said Silver, rough and ready.
11:57
Speaker 1: But mark you here. I easy man, I'm quite the gentleman,
12:03
Speaker 1: says you. But this time it's serious. Duty is duty, mates,
12:09
Speaker 1: I give my vote death when I'm in Parliament and
12:14
Speaker 1: riding in my coach, I don't want none of these
12:18
Speaker 1: sea lawyers in the cabin are coming home and look
12:21
Speaker 1: for like the devil at prayers. Wait is what I say.
12:26
Speaker 1: And when the time comes, why little rip John, cried
12:32
Speaker 1: the coxswains. You're a man, your say, so Israel, when
12:37
Speaker 1: you see said silver. Only one thing I claim, I claim, Trelawney,
12:46
Speaker 1: I'll wring his calf's head off his buddy with these hands, dick,
12:52
Speaker 1: he added, breaking off. You must jump up like a
12:56
Speaker 1: sweet lad and get me an apple to wet my
12:58
Speaker 1: pipe like you may fancy the terror I was in.
13:03
Speaker 1: I should have leaped out and run for it if
13:05
Speaker 1: I had found the strength, But my limbs and heart
13:08
Speaker 1: alike misgave me. I heard Dick begin to rise, and
13:12
Speaker 1: then some one seemingly stopped him, and the voice of
13:16
Speaker 1: hands exclaimed, Oh, stow, that don't you get sucking of
13:20
Speaker 1: that bild John. Let's have a gar of the rum.
13:24
Speaker 1: Dick said, silver, I trust you, I've a gage on
13:29
Speaker 1: the keg. Mind, there's the key. You fill a panniken
13:33
Speaker 1: and bring it up. Terrified as I was, I could
13:37
Speaker 1: not help thinking to myself, then this must have been
13:40
Speaker 1: how mister Arrow got the strong waters that destroyed him.
13:43
Speaker 1: Dick was gone but a little while, and during his
13:46
Speaker 1: absence Israel spoke straight on in the cook's ear. It
13:50
Speaker 1: was but a word or two that I could catch,
13:53
Speaker 1: and yet I gathered some important news. For besides, are
13:57
Speaker 1: the scraps that tended to the same purpose. This whole
14:00
Speaker 1: clause was audible, not another man of them all, jine.
14:04
Speaker 1: Hence there were still faithful men on board. When Dick returned,
14:09
Speaker 1: one or another of the trio took the panickin and
14:12
Speaker 1: drank one to luck another with a ears to old
14:17
Speaker 1: flint and silver himself sang in a kind of song,
14:22
Speaker 1: ears to herself and old your loff, plenty of prizes
14:26
Speaker 1: and plenty of duff. Just then a sort of brightness
14:29
Speaker 1: fell upon me in the barrel, and looking up, I
14:31
Speaker 1: found the moon had risen and was slivering the mizzen
14:34
Speaker 1: top and shining white on the laugh of the forcail.
14:38
Speaker 1: And almost at the same time, the voice on the
14:40
Speaker 1: lookout shouted and oh end of Chapter eleven, Chapter twelve,
14:52
Speaker 1: Council of War. There was a great rush of feet
14:57
Speaker 1: across the deck. I could hear people tumble up from
15:00
Speaker 1: the cabin and the forecastle and slipping in an instant
15:03
Speaker 1: outside my barrel. I dived behind the foresail and made
15:07
Speaker 1: a double toward the stern, and came out upon the
15:10
Speaker 1: open deck in time to join Hunter and doctor Livesey
15:14
Speaker 1: in the rush for the weather bow. There all hands
15:18
Speaker 1: were already congregated. A belt of fog had lifted, almost
15:22
Speaker 1: simultaneously with the appearance of the moon. Away to the
15:25
Speaker 1: southwest of us we saw two low hills about a
15:29
Speaker 1: couple of miles apart, and rising behind one of them,
15:33
Speaker 1: a third and higher hill, whose peak was still buried
15:37
Speaker 1: in the fog. All three seemed sharp and conical in figure,
15:43
Speaker 1: so much I saw almost in a dream, for I
15:47
Speaker 1: had not yet recovered from my horrid fear of a
15:50
Speaker 1: minute or two before. And then I heard the voice
15:53
Speaker 1: of Captain Smollett issuing orders. The hispaniola was laid a
15:58
Speaker 1: couple of points nearer the wind, and now sailed a
16:01
Speaker 1: course that would just clear the island to the east.
16:05
Speaker 1: And now men, said the captain, when all was sheeted home.
16:10
Speaker 1: Has any one of you ever seen that land ahead? Oh?
16:15
Speaker 1: I ah, sir, said silver. I've watered there with the
16:20
Speaker 1: trader I was cooking. The anchorage is on the south
16:25
Speaker 1: behind an islet, I fancy asked the captain. Yes, sir,
16:31
Speaker 1: Skeleton Island they calls it. It were a main place
16:35
Speaker 1: for pirates once and a hand we had on board
16:39
Speaker 1: knowed all their names for it. That hill to the
16:42
Speaker 1: Norrid they caused Foremast Hill. There are three hills in
16:47
Speaker 1: a row running southward, four Main and Mizzen, Sir. But
16:52
Speaker 1: the Main that's the big un with the cloud on it.
16:56
Speaker 1: They usually cause the spyglass by re a look out
17:00
Speaker 1: they kept when they was in the anchorage cleaning, for
17:05
Speaker 1: it's there they cleaned their ships. Sir, ask in your pardon,
17:09
Speaker 1: I have a chart here, said Captain Smollett. See if
17:14
Speaker 1: that's the place. Long John's eyes burned in his head
17:18
Speaker 1: as he took the chart, but by the fresh look
17:21
Speaker 1: of the paper, I knew he was doomed to disappointment.
17:25
Speaker 1: This was not the map be found in billy Bone's chest,
17:28
Speaker 1: but an accurate copy, complete in all things, names and
17:32
Speaker 1: heights and soundings, with this single exception of the red
17:36
Speaker 1: crosses and the written notes. Sharp as must have been
17:41
Speaker 1: his annoyance, Silver had the strength of mind to hide it. Yes, sir,
17:47
Speaker 1: said he, this is the spot, to be sure, and
17:52
Speaker 1: very prettily drawed out. Who might have done that? I
17:56
Speaker 1: wonder the pirates were too ignorant. I reckon. Ah. Here
18:00
Speaker 1: it is cap'n Kid's anchorage, just the name my shipmate
18:05
Speaker 1: called it. There is a strong current roads along the
18:09
Speaker 1: south and then away up nor'ard up the west coast.
18:14
Speaker 1: Right you was, sir, said he, to haul your wind
18:18
Speaker 1: and keep the weather of the island. Leastways, if such
18:23
Speaker 1: was your intention as to enter and carene, there ain't
18:26
Speaker 1: no better place for that in these waters. Thank you,
18:31
Speaker 1: my men, said Captain Smollett. I'll ask you later on
18:35
Speaker 1: to give us a help. You may go. I was
18:40
Speaker 1: surprised at the coolness with which John avowed his knowledge
18:43
Speaker 1: of the island, and I own I was half frightened
18:46
Speaker 1: when I saw him drawing nearer to myself. He did
18:50
Speaker 1: not know, to be sure that I had overheard his
18:53
Speaker 1: counsel from the apple barrel. And yet I had by
18:56
Speaker 1: this time taken such a horror of his cruel, duplicity
19:01
Speaker 1: and power, that I could scarce conceal a shudder. When
19:05
Speaker 1: he laid his hand upon my arm, AH said he
19:11
Speaker 1: this here is a sweet spart, this island, a sweet
19:15
Speaker 1: spot for a lad to get a shore on. You'll bathe,
19:19
Speaker 1: and you'll cloimb trees, and you'll hunt goats. You will,
19:24
Speaker 1: and you'll get alaft on them hills. Let a goat yourself.
19:29
Speaker 1: Why it makes me young again? I was going to
19:33
Speaker 1: forget my timber leg. I was. It's a pleasant thing
19:37
Speaker 1: to be young. And I have ten tolls you made
19:39
Speaker 1: later that when you want to go a bit of exploring,
19:44
Speaker 1: you ask old John and he'll put up a snack
19:47
Speaker 1: for you to take along. And clapping me in the
19:51
Speaker 1: friendliest way upon the shoulder. He hobbled off forehead and
19:54
Speaker 1: went below. Captain Smollett, the Squire, and Doctor Livesey were
19:59
Speaker 1: talking together on the quarter deck, and anxious as I
20:02
Speaker 1: was to tell them my story, I durst not interrupt
20:06
Speaker 1: them openly. While I was still casting about in my
20:09
Speaker 1: thoughts to find some probable excuse, doctor Livesey called me
20:14
Speaker 1: to his side. He had left his pipe below, and
20:17
Speaker 1: being a slave to tobacco, had meant that I should
20:20
Speaker 1: fetch it. But as soon as I was near enough
20:22
Speaker 1: to speak and not be overheard, I broke out immediately.
20:27
Speaker 1: Doctor let me speak, get the Captain and Squire down
20:31
Speaker 1: to the cabin, and then make some pretense to send
20:33
Speaker 1: for me. I have terrible news. The doctor changed countenance
20:38
Speaker 1: a little, but next moment he was master of himself.
20:42
Speaker 1: Thank you, Jim, said he quite loudly. That was all
20:46
Speaker 1: I wanted to know, as if he had asked me
20:49
Speaker 1: a question. And with that he turned on his heel
20:52
Speaker 1: and rejoined the other two. They spoke together for a
20:56
Speaker 1: little and though none of them started or raised his
20:59
Speaker 1: voice oh so so much as whistled, it was plain
21:02
Speaker 1: enough that Doctor Livesey had communicated my request. For the
21:05
Speaker 1: next thing that I heard was the captain giving an
21:08
Speaker 1: order to Joe Anderson, and all hands were piped on deck.
21:12
Speaker 1: My lads, said Captain Smollett, I have a word to
21:16
Speaker 1: say to you. This land that we have cited is
21:20
Speaker 1: the place we have been sailing to. Mister Trelawney, being
21:25
Speaker 1: a very open handed gentleman, as we all know, has
21:29
Speaker 1: just asked me a word or two. And as I
21:32
Speaker 1: was able to tell him that every man on board
21:35
Speaker 1: had done his duty a low and aloft as I
21:40
Speaker 1: never asked to see it done better, why he and
21:43
Speaker 1: I and the doctor are going below to the cabin
21:46
Speaker 1: to drink your health and luck, and you'll have grog
21:50
Speaker 1: served out to you to drink our health and luck.
21:54
Speaker 1: I'll tell you what I think of this. I think
21:57
Speaker 1: it handsome, and if you think as I do, you'll
22:01
Speaker 1: give a good sea cheer for the gentleman that does it.
22:05
Speaker 1: The cheer followed, that was a matter of course, but
22:08
Speaker 1: it rang out so full and hearty that I confess
22:12
Speaker 1: I could hardly believe these same men were plotting for
22:15
Speaker 1: our blood. Word more cheer for come, Smollett, cried long John,
22:22
Speaker 1: when the first had subsided, and this was given with
22:25
Speaker 1: a will on the top of that. The three gentlemen
22:28
Speaker 1: went below, and not long after word was sent forward
22:33
Speaker 1: that Jim Hawkins was wanted in the cabin. I found
22:37
Speaker 1: them all three seated around the table, a bottle of
22:40
Speaker 1: Spanish wine and some raisins before them, and the doctor
22:43
Speaker 1: smoking away with his wig on his lap, and that
22:46
Speaker 1: I knew was a sign that he was agitated. The
22:49
Speaker 1: stern window was open, for it was a warm night,
22:53
Speaker 1: and you could see the moon shining behind on the
22:56
Speaker 1: ship's wake. Now, Hawkins said the Squire, you have something
23:00
Speaker 1: to say, Speak up. I did as I was bid,
23:04
Speaker 1: and short as I could make it, told the whole
23:08
Speaker 1: details of Silver's conversation. Nobody interrupted me till I was done,
23:13
Speaker 1: nor did any one of the three of them make
23:16
Speaker 1: so much as a movement. But they kept their eyes
23:19
Speaker 1: upon my face from first to last. Jim said, doctor livesey,
23:25
Speaker 1: take a seat, And they made me sit down at
23:28
Speaker 1: a table beside them, poured me out a glass of wine,
23:31
Speaker 1: filled my hands with raisins, and all three, one after
23:35
Speaker 1: the other, and each with a bough, drank my good
23:38
Speaker 1: health and their service to me for my luck and courage.
23:43
Speaker 1: Now Captain said the Squire, you were right and I
23:48
Speaker 1: was wrong. I owned myself an ass and I await
23:52
Speaker 1: your orders no more an ass than I, Sir, returned
23:57
Speaker 1: the Captain. I never heard of a crew that meant
24:00
Speaker 1: to mutiny, but that what signs before for any man
24:05
Speaker 1: that had an eye in his head to see the
24:07
Speaker 1: mischief and take steps accordingly. But this crew, he added,
24:12
Speaker 1: beats me, Captain, said the doctor. With your permission, that's
24:19
Speaker 1: silver a very remarkable man. He'd look remarkably well from
24:24
Speaker 1: a yard arm, Sir returned the captain. But this is talk.
24:30
Speaker 1: This don't lead to anything. I see three or four points,
24:35
Speaker 1: and with mister Trelawney's permission, i'll name them. You saw
24:40
Speaker 1: our the Captain, it is for you to speak, said
24:43
Speaker 1: mister Trelawney grandly. First point, began mister Smollett. We must
24:49
Speaker 1: go on because we can't turn back. If I gave
24:53
Speaker 1: the word to turn about, they would rise at once.
24:57
Speaker 1: Second point, we have time before us, at least until
25:01
Speaker 1: this treasure's found. Third point, there are faithful hands. Now, sir,
25:08
Speaker 1: it's got to come to blows sooner or later. And
25:12
Speaker 1: what I propose is to take time by the forelock
25:16
Speaker 1: as the saying is and to come to blows some
25:19
Speaker 1: fine day when they least expect it. We can count
25:23
Speaker 1: I take it on your own home servants, mister Trelawney,
25:28
Speaker 1: as upon myself, declared the squire, three reckoned the captain.
25:35
Speaker 1: Ourselves make seven counting hawkins there now about the honest hands.
25:41
Speaker 1: Most likely are Trelawny's own men, said the doctor. There's
25:46
Speaker 1: he picked up for himself before he lit on silver.
25:49
Speaker 1: Nay replied the squire hands was one of mine. I
25:54
Speaker 1: did think I could have trusted hands, added the captain,
25:59
Speaker 1: and that they're all Englishmen, broke out the squire. Sir,
26:03
Speaker 1: I could find it in my heart to blow the
26:06
Speaker 1: ship up. Well, gentlemen, said the captain. The best that
26:11
Speaker 1: I can say is not much. We must lay too,
26:15
Speaker 1: if you please, and keep a bright lookout. It's trying
26:20
Speaker 1: on a man. I know it would be pleasanter to
26:23
Speaker 1: come to blows, but there's no help for it till
26:27
Speaker 1: we know our men lay to and whistle for a wind.
26:31
Speaker 1: That's my view, Jim here said. The doctor can help
26:35
Speaker 1: us more than anyone. The men are not shy with here. Man.
26:39
Speaker 1: Jim is a noticing lad. Hawkins. I put prodigious faith
26:44
Speaker 1: in you, added the Squire. I began to feel pretty
26:47
Speaker 1: desperate at this, for I felt altogether helpless, and yet
26:52
Speaker 1: by an odd train of circumstances. It was indeed through
26:55
Speaker 1: me that safety came. In the meantime talk as we
26:59
Speaker 1: please eased. There were only seven out of the twenty
27:03
Speaker 1: six on whom we knew we could rely, And out
27:07
Speaker 1: of these seven, one was a boy, so that the
27:11
Speaker 1: grown men on our side were six to their nineteen
27:16
Speaker 1: end of Chapter twelve,
