- 0:00Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line right now is Sky
- 0:03Speaker 1: News bureau chief for the Northern Territory, Matt Cunningham.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning to your match.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Good Katie, how are you not.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Too bad match?
- 0:12Speaker 1: I know it's a it's an incredibly sad situation this morning.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I think it's safe to say that.
- 0:17Speaker 1: People are utterly devastated by this news that a nineteen
- 0:21Speaker 1: year old has lost their life overnight while working at
- 0:24Speaker 1: a bottle shop.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I think there's a lot of people who are devastated, Katie.
- 0:30Speaker 3: And I think there's a lot of people who are
- 0:31Speaker 3: angry this morning as well. I've been out at the
- 0:35Speaker 3: airport tavern Sint about six point thirty this morning and
- 0:42Speaker 3: it's just absolutely devastating what's happened to this nineteen year
- 0:44Speaker 3: old man. I was actually speaking to a guy out
- 0:47Speaker 3: there and who was actually there last night holding him
- 0:50Speaker 3: as he as he took his blass breath, and you know,
- 0:53Speaker 3: he was obviously very shaken up by the whole situation.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And I think a lot of people this morning when
- 1:01Speaker 3: dark and looked back in violence against the kersain who
- 1:05Speaker 3: and I was just doing a job, Matt.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We are just having a little bit of trouble hearing
- 1:09Speaker 1: you there, but that is that is incredible to hear.
- 1:13Speaker 1: So you've actually been out there speaking to the person
- 1:17Speaker 1: who was holding that young fellow in their arms when
- 1:20Speaker 1: they passed.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I did. I did speak to a guy. He
- 1:25Speaker 3: didn't want to want to speak on Cameron, but you know,
- 1:28Speaker 3: he was there at the scene this morning, and he
- 1:30Speaker 3: was there last night as well, and he was obviously
- 1:32Speaker 3: pretty shaken up by what he witnessed last night, you know, Katie.
- 1:37Speaker 3: And he said that he was a regular customer at
- 1:39Speaker 3: the story. He said that this young fellow who who
- 1:43Speaker 3: has been killed was just a beautiful boy, he described
- 1:46Speaker 3: him as. And I just said, it was absolutely devastating
- 1:50Speaker 3: to be there holding him as he basically died in
- 1:53Speaker 3: his arms last night.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I honestly, some of the messages that we are this morning,
- 2:00Speaker 1: people are truly devastated by what has gone on, and
- 2:03Speaker 1: that we know that major Crime are now investigating this
- 2:09Speaker 1: tragedy from overnight. We did speak just a short time
- 2:13Speaker 1: ago with the Acting Assistant Commissioner Danny Bacon.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Now there was quite a bit that he couldn't say.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He said now that major Crime have taken carriage, but
- 2:22Speaker 1: we are being told that there was also another incident
- 2:25Speaker 1: at the Beachfront Hotel. Now, he did confirm that that
- 2:29Speaker 1: police are investigating that. I'm not sure whether you have
- 2:32Speaker 1: any detail on that at this point.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Well, I can tell you I've just arrived at the
- 2:37Speaker 3: Beachfront now, Katie, just to have a look and see
- 2:41Speaker 3: what I can find out here. And I can tell
- 2:43Speaker 3: you that there is some temporary fencing that's been erected
- 2:49Speaker 3: at the entrance to the drive through bottle shop here
- 2:53Speaker 3: at the Beachfront, and I'm just walking over to it now.
- 2:57Speaker 3: It looks like there's some yallow tape that's been put
- 3:00Speaker 3: up also across that temporary fencing that's there at the
- 3:06Speaker 3: front of the beach of the Beachfront Hotel where the
- 3:14Speaker 3: and I can just see at the moment, So there's
- 3:16Speaker 3: there's I'm just walking over now. There's some temporary fencing
- 3:19Speaker 3: that's been set up. There's some black and yellow tape
- 3:22Speaker 3: across that temporary fencing that says that says caution. Most
- 3:27Speaker 3: of the roller shovers are down. The main one there
- 3:29Speaker 3: is open for those people who know the Beachfront Hotel.
- 3:35Speaker 3: There's more yellow tape up inside basically across the poles
- 3:42Speaker 3: that hold up the side of the Beachfront bottle Shop,
- 3:45Speaker 3: that the roof over the beachfronts bottle shop. I'm not
- 3:48Speaker 3: sure what time the Beachfront normally opens on a Monday,
- 3:52Speaker 3: whether it normally opens, but it's certainly not open at
- 3:55Speaker 3: the moment. It doesn't look like it's going to be
- 3:57Speaker 3: open anytime soon. I think I think it's changing hands
- 4:01Speaker 3: today too, the establishment. I was talking to guy who
- 4:05Speaker 3: ns the beach Front of at least he did until
- 4:08Speaker 3: today on Friday night at the basketball So yeah, as
- 4:12Speaker 3: you say, you were speaking to Danny Bacon before, and
- 4:14Speaker 3: there's been an incident here last night as well, So
- 4:16Speaker 3: I's pretty devastating for everyone, It.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Truly is, Matt. From this point, is there much more
- 4:23Speaker 2: that you know?
- 4:24Speaker 1: Obviously we've just had the acting Assistant commissioner on the show.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Is there much more that you were being told at
- 4:30Speaker 1: this point from the police. We're expecting Major Crime to
- 4:33Speaker 1: be out a little later to provide some kind of update.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we've been told Michael Watite's going to do a
- 4:40Speaker 3: news conference at some point, so I'm not sure when
- 4:43Speaker 3: that's happening, but yeah, we will, we will hear from him.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Later today. Other than that, I haven't heard much from
- 4:51Speaker 3: the police, but I have been seeking the few people
- 4:54Speaker 3: in the hospitality industry this morning, and I'm sure you
- 4:56Speaker 3: have too, Adian who are pretty angry about about what's happened,
- 5:03Speaker 3: and you know, they're talking about an escalation in violence
- 5:06Speaker 3: that they're employees have been doing this for quite a
- 5:09Speaker 3: while now, and I'm sure we'll do more about that
- 5:12Speaker 3: over this week. Yeah, absolutely, I'm sure you're talking to
- 5:17Speaker 3: those people as well.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, And I agree with you. I think that
- 5:21Speaker 1: we are going to hear more about this over the
- 5:23Speaker 1: week or over the next few days, because we have
- 5:25Speaker 1: seen an escalation in some of the incidents that we
- 5:29Speaker 1: that have been experienced at those bottle shops. I mean,
- 5:32Speaker 1: I've been sent vision. I know that you've been sent
- 5:34Speaker 1: vision as well over recent weeks. People rocking up to
- 5:37Speaker 1: bottle shops with weapons, threatening staff with weapons. People also
- 5:42Speaker 1: rocking up to bottle shops and really taking what they please.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And now we've wound up in.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The situation that we are in this morning, where we're
- 5:49Speaker 1: reporting what is an absolute tragedy.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Matt.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Have you spoken to the Northern Territory government yet this morning?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yes, I was that a press conference with Nicole Manners
- 6:00Speaker 3: in about an hour ago, and she it was a
- 6:04Speaker 3: press conference unrelated to this issue, but she did start
- 6:08Speaker 3: off by speaking about this issue and offering her condolences
- 6:11Speaker 3: to the family and talking about this being a tragic incident.
- 6:14Speaker 3: She was asked several questions by me and other reporters
- 6:16Speaker 3: there about what the government plans to do, about whether
- 6:19Speaker 3: there will be any change in policy as a consequence
- 6:23Speaker 3: of this is, about whether the government is doing enough
- 6:27Speaker 3: to keep people safe. She didn't directly answer any of
- 6:29Speaker 3: those questions. She said she couldn't. She said there was
- 6:31Speaker 3: a police investigation under way that needed to run its
- 6:35Speaker 3: course before she would comment any further on that. So
- 6:39Speaker 3: that's where the government's position sits at the moment.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Came well, Matt Cunningham, No doubt there is going to
- 6:44Speaker 1: be further information that flows through today. We always appreciate
- 6:48Speaker 1: your time. Thanks very much for having a chat with
- 6:50Speaker 1: us this morning.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Thanks, thank you.
