- 0:00Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver, the Podcast where I pick up my audio recorder as I step
- 0:07off the train and deliver an episode to you while I walk home.
- 0:10I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:12Well, this is an experiment episode based on the theme of the episode.
- 0:27Greetings friends.
- 0:28It is a lovely afternoon here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:31The sun is out.
- 0:32It's chilly.
- 0:33It's cold enough I'm wearing a toque but warm enough that I don't need gloves.
- 0:38I probably could get away without the toque but I'd be a little chilly and I don't want
- 0:41to be chilly.
- 0:44This week in my board game club I am going to be hosting a real-time extravaganza.
- 0:49I'm bringing a number of games to the board game club that are played in real time.
- 0:55And so with this podcast I'm out walking on a wire because I'm not going to edit it at
- 1:01all. [Transcription note: I have edited the transcription for clarity, but not length or repeated words]
- 1:02What you're going to hear is the exact amount of time between when I say "Welcome to Pick
- 1:08Up and Deliver" and when I say whatever it is that I say at the end of the podcast.
- 1:15So that means that all the uncomfortable pauses and anytime when I go "Ugh" -- which is more
- 1:20than I like to admit -- will be in the podcast.
- 1:24I don't do this to you very often--in fact rarely--but I thought it would be interesting for
- 1:29you to see what is this podcast like in real time without the editing.
- 1:33I'm also not going to run the "truncate silence" function on Audacity which I use to cut
- 1:40down the amount of silence in the episode.
- 1:43So if this one feels a little bit drawn out, my apologies. But now you'll know what it's
- 1:47like to actually walk with me rather than walking with me slightly massaged.
- 1:52So this will be interesting.
- 1:55Like I said for my board game club in my college I am doing a real-time extravaganza so I thought
- 2:01I would talk about what I like about real-time games which real-time games I like and what
- 2:06I like about them.
- 2:09I'm going to start with quick reactions.
- 2:12So what I've done is I've picked out a number of different kinds of real-time games and
- 2:16made a list of games that I have played or enjoyed or both played and enjoyed that
- 2:22fit that category.
- 2:23So I'm going to start with favorite real-time games.
- 2:26Oh so quick reactions.
- 2:31These are games where a big part of playing them is reacting quickly to what's going on
- 2:37on the table and hopefully winning because you react faster than the other players.
- 2:43The height of this game for me is Anomia.
- 2:47Anomia is a real-time quick reaction game where you are facing off against other players.
- 2:52I've talked about a number of times here on the podcast.
- 2:56It is weird and delightful because it's paralyzing in its speed because you can react quickly
- 3:04and put yourself in the position of okay I need to react.
- 3:07You have to react twice.
- 3:08You have to react once by saying okay I have to react and then you have to come up with
- 3:12a word with which to react.
- 3:14You have to do both of those things faster than your opponent does those same two things.
- 3:19It's a really interesting game and very frustrating.
- 3:22It can be kind of almost debilitating to play and it's a delightful kind of stress.
- 3:26That's Anomia.
- 3:28Another game that I put in the quick reactions category is Heist.
- 3:31This is a cooperative game in which you are working together to try to react quickly
- 3:37to voice commands.
- 3:39Each player has a variety of things around and you're going to work together to try
- 3:43to react to the voice commands in the game quickly.
- 3:49So it will say each person has a name so you're the money man or you're the safe cracker or
- 3:58demolitions expert and it will say demolitions expert give the goggles to the safe cracker
- 4:04and it sort of gives you these commands and there's always a little tokens around the
- 4:07table.
- 4:08he's passing around, you have to hit buttons,
- 4:10you have to move stuff around.
- 4:12And, when you've done all of those things, then,
- 4:16if you do them correctly, then the game rewards you
- 4:22by leveling up.
- 4:25And you win after a certain amount of time.
- 4:28You're earning money as you go along.
- 4:30That's Heist.
- 4:31Designed by Rob Davieau, I played it at Gen Con one year.
- 4:35And I ended up finding a copy.
- 4:38We got a copy for our game club,
- 4:40but then ended up buying a copy myself at,
- 4:42I think, Goodwill.
- 4:44And it's a fun game to play occasionally.
- 4:47A couple more fast reaction games that I'm generally
- 4:51not good at.
- 4:52SET is another one.
- 4:55This one, you are trying to solve a problem as quickly
- 4:58as you can.
- 4:58And then when you see it, you say set,
- 5:00and you grab the collection that you see.
- 5:04So there's an element of making your brain work quickly,
- 5:06which I'm really bad at.
- 5:08Dutch Blitz is a game where you're sort of playing
- 5:11a simplified version of solitaire,
- 5:17but you're building your cards into the middle of the table
- 5:20and trying to do that as quickly as you can.
- 5:23The person who gets the most cards into the middle of the table
- 5:25is going to get the most points,
- 5:26but you also need to
- 5:28whittle down this one pile that's on the side of the table
- 5:32because that is how you end the round.
- 5:35And if you end the round with nothing left in that pile,
- 5:38then you don't lose any points.
- 5:40Everybody else will lose points
- 5:42because they have things in that pile.
- 5:43If you haven't played Dutch Blitz, it's really good.
- 5:46It's very intense, really fun, pretty fast.
- 5:50Two more games that I put in this category are
- 5:57Dropolter and Taco cat goat cheese pizza.
- 6:01Taco cat goat cheese pizza is a real time card game
- 6:05kind of like slap jack.
- 6:10And you are putting it on cards in order.
- 6:12And if you play a card and it doesn't match
- 6:16the word that you're saying, then you have to slap it
- 6:18or someone else might slap it and they win the card.
- 6:21So it's a race game or a response game
- 6:25that has to do with what you're seeing come up.
- 6:28Or maybe it's the other way around if you,
- 6:30you're saying "Taco cat goat cheese pizza"
- 6:34or "Taco cat goat cheese and pizza."
- 6:37And if the thing that you say comes up with the word,
- 6:41maybe that's when you slap it, I don't remember.
- 6:44It's been a while, but it is a real time game
- 6:46where you're slapping stuff.
- 6:47And then Dropolter, I have talked about not that long ago,
- 6:53but it's one of the oink games where you are using
- 6:57hand-dexterity to try to grab things off the table
- 7:00or drop things so that you have the right things in your hand.
- 7:04You're trying to move quickly, but you have to be accurate as well.
- 7:07The last game I'll put in this quick reactions.
- 7:09Category is Stay Cool.
- 7:11This is a game published by Iello,
- 7:13I don't remember who designed it,
- 7:14but it is a brutal brain melter.
- 7:18The way the game works is that on your turn,
- 7:21you have to answer two kinds of questions at the same time.
- 7:27You have questions that you're answering out loud
- 7:31and questions that you're answering with these letter dice.
- 7:35And you're being asked the questions
- 7:37both at the same time, you have to get through all of them.
- 7:41And there are two people asking it,
- 7:42and they're both asking you over and over again,
- 7:45sort of loud and annoying.
- 7:46It's really quite masterful.
- 7:48And then on the second level, you have to do the same thing,
- 7:52but there's a timer.
- 7:54Oh, on the first level, I think there's a timer,
- 7:57and you have to tell someone to flip the timer,
- 7:59and you can see the timer.
- 8:01On the second one, there's a timer behind a shield,
- 8:04and you can't see the timer.
- 8:06And you have to tell someone to flip the timer.
- 8:09So it gets more difficult as the game goes along.
- 8:12That's stay cool.
- 8:15So those are all games that involve quick reactions,
- 8:19sort of really being on your toes.
- 8:22The next couple are games that I would call
- 8:25"Shouty Games."
- 8:27Games where a big part of the real-time element
- 8:30is how quickly and how loud you can shout.
- 8:34The preeminent version of this is pit.
- 8:38Pit is a classic card game, literally like 100 years old.
- 8:42And in it, you are trying to corner the market
- 8:45by trading with people, and you're doing that by shouting,
- 8:49like in the old-timey stock market.
- 8:52Then when you corner the market, you yell "Pit,"
- 8:54and you get to ring a bell to stop trading.
- 8:56That's pretty cool.
- 8:57Another game that involves sort of shouting
- 9:02and trading is "Happy Salmon."
- 9:05"Happy Salmon" is an excellent little game
- 9:07where you are trying to match with people,
- 9:09and trade with them as you do the same thing.
- 9:14So you fist bump, you do a high five.
- 9:17There is a thing called a "Happy Salmon,"
- 9:18which is a sort of weird hand shake.
- 9:21It feels like you're joining the Monty Python Illuminati
- 9:24when you do a "Happy Salmon," or you run around the table.
- 9:28Those are really interesting to do
- 9:30because you're trying to do them quickly,
- 9:32you're trying to match with other people,
- 9:33but you are shouting to do it.
- 9:36On a related note, the call of the wild
- 9:38and dude are both games that involve saying things
- 9:42and matching in real-time, but they aren't "shouty" per se.
- 9:46So those I would sort of say are kind of honorable mentions.
- 9:51Next up, the next kind of real-time game I would talk about
- 9:56are "Fast Action Games."
- 9:59There are two categories, two subcategories here.
- 10:01I'll say "Fast Action, Co-op Games" and "Fast Action Competitive Games."
- 10:07In both cases, these are games where there's a fairly complicated
- 10:11amount of stuff to do.
- 10:13The Co-op ones, you're all kind of working together as you do them.
- 10:16And I guess I point to these as different from the quick reaction
- 10:21games because there's more like you're doing a thing
- 10:24against a timer, whereas the quick reaction games
- 10:26you're following after somebody says something
- 10:30in particular to you or something happens,
- 10:33you're reacting to it.
- 10:34In the "Fast Action Games," there's a timer
- 10:36and you're trying to work against it.
- 10:37So my favorite version of "Fast Action,"
- 10:40Co-op would be "Escape Curse of the Temple."
- 10:43This is a "Fast Dice Rolling Game"
- 10:45where you're trying to get your characters out of the temple.
- 10:48You're reacting.
- 10:48There's a music soundtrack that's playing that's very ominous
- 10:51and you have to roll dice to move your character through.
- 10:55If you get stuck, you have to ask for help.
- 10:58And as you go through, you are trying to find these gems
- 11:02and get yourself out of the temple.
- 11:04Three times during the game, there's this gong.
- 11:07And then everybody has to get back to the safe room.
- 11:10If you don't get back to the safe room,
- 11:11you lose one of your dice, which is really brutal.
- 11:15The third time, if you don't get back,
- 11:16if you, the first two times, you have to get back to the safe room.
- 11:19The third time, hopefully your group will have found the exit.
- 11:24And when you find the exit, then everybody has to get out.
- 11:29The beauty of the exit is you have to have done well
- 11:32throughout the temple to get out the exit
- 11:34because the way you get out is to roll enough of the exit keys
- 11:39and the exit keys you have to roll as many as there are gems plus one.
- 11:43So if the group has not found and removed all the gems,
- 11:48then you won't be able to get out of the temple.
- 11:52It's really clever and very interesting.
- 11:55So that is Escape Curse of the Temple.
- 12:00A couple other fast action games that I would point to
- 12:02as really interesting are Fuse,
- 12:07which is a dice rolling game where you're trying to put
- 12:10combinations of dice on these cards.
- 12:12Again, you're playing for time, trying to complete the cards
- 12:16like you're just disarming bombs.
- 12:18London Dread is a really interesting planning game
- 12:22where during the real time phase you are talking to each other
- 12:24and making plans about what you're going to do.
- 12:27Then when the real time phase is over, you resolve it
- 12:30to see how well you did on those plans.
- 12:35Another version of that or another game like that is Space Alert.
- 12:39Space Alert is another game where you make plans
- 12:42and you go in real time and then you see what happens
- 12:46to see how well you resolve those plans.
- 12:51Finally, Illiterati is a real time spelling game
- 12:56where you are trying to spell words as quickly as you can
- 13:00that meet goals.
- 13:01And everybody is trying to meet their goals at the same time.
- 13:05But if you don't as a group use all the letters,
- 13:08then these penalties come in that get worse and worse
- 13:11and the game sort of ramps up to making you lose
- 13:14because you didn't account for all the penalties
- 13:16or didn't adequately resolve all the penalties.
- 13:20That's Illiterati.
- 13:23There's another category of fast action games.
- 13:25These are fast action competitive games.
- 13:27These ones are particularly fun, but I find very hard
- 13:30to find people who want to play them with
- 13:32because they are incredibly intense
- 13:34and often debilitatingly difficult
- 13:37because they demand that you make choices quickly.
- 13:40One that I think was a grand scheme
- 13:43but didn't ultimately succeed for a lot of people
- 13:45was pendulum.
- 13:46I thought pendulum was pretty fun, but nobody else liked it.
- 13:48So it didn't stay in my collection.
- 13:50But this one had the real time element of trying to take turns
- 13:54and do things while the timers are clicking
- 13:57or the sand timers are running
- 13:58and the difficulty of keeping track of the rules
- 14:01and doing that is pretty interesting, I thought.
- 14:04But a lot of people didn't like that.
- 14:06Galaxy Trucker is another one.
- 14:08This one, there isn't a timer at the beginning.
- 14:10You're just racing with other players to build your ship.
- 14:13And one person when they decide they're done building their ship
- 14:15can declare that they're done
- 14:17and then they start a timer.
- 14:18And I think timer is one or two minutes
- 14:20and everyone has to stop when the timer runs out.
- 14:22So I have never actually played this one properly
- 14:25because my children always wanted to take their time
- 14:27and build really robust ships.
- 14:28So there was never really a racing element.
- 14:31I would love to play this sometime
- 14:33with people who are actually racing
- 14:34because I imagine it would be hilarious.
- 14:37(sighs)
- 14:39Two other real-time competitive games
- 14:41that I enjoy bullet heart or bullet star
- 14:45or whatever, there's a bunch of different bullet games.
- 14:48This is a real-time puzzle solving game
- 14:50where it's kind of like Dr. Mario,
- 14:53the better you do on your board,
- 14:55the more penalties you give to your opponent
- 14:57that they after resolve in the next round.
- 14:59(laughs)
- 15:01Sidereal Confluence is a trading and negotiation game
- 15:10that also has a really interesting real-time element.
- 15:14It is not quite as rushed or dramatic
- 15:18as some of the other real-time games,
- 15:22but the trading element is in real time.
- 15:24So there's no taking turns making offers.
- 15:27It's just, hey, I'll trade this with you.
- 15:28You want to trade this with me?
- 15:29Hey, hey, hey, let's go, let's go.
- 15:32So there is an element of wanting to get your deal made
- 15:35before other people make trades and take away
- 15:37the resources you need to make your deal.
- 15:39That one works pretty well.
- 15:42Finally, the last form of real-time game I wanted to mention here
- 15:48would be real-time co-op games in which you're taking turns.
- 15:53Kites is the best example.
- 15:54You have these sand timers running
- 15:56and you have to take turns taking your turns.
- 15:58And so sometimes I can solve a problem,
- 16:00but it's your turn and I have to wait for you to solve it.
- 16:03There's a really interesting feeling of go-go-go,
- 16:05get it done, get it done.
- 16:07That I like.
- 16:08Magic Rabbit is another one of these.
- 16:10It is a card manipulation game that has a real-time element
- 16:15and we're all working together, but you also can't communicate.
- 16:17You have to, you're limited in how you communicate
- 16:20with one another for that one.
- 16:23And then finally, bomb busters is a puzzle solving game
- 16:28where you are trying to solve puzzles again in real-time.
- 16:30It's great.
- 16:31Well, I feel like I mostly just listed games.
- 16:36I didn't tell you a lot about what I liked about them,
- 16:39but it is the tension that's created when you are
- 16:42trying to do a thing quickly
- 16:45that I find make real-time games have that extra something.
- 16:49So what are your favorite real-time games?
- 16:51Share over in boardgamegeek guild #3269.
- 16:53And let me know.
- 16:54I'd love you to hear from you.
- 16:56Until next time, thanks for joining me on my walk today.
- 16:58I hope you next walk is as pleasant as my walk.
- 17:01Goodbye.
