- 0:28There's a brand new book out with that title.
- 0:32Christians often quote Proverbs 22, six.
- 0:35Train up a child in the way he should go.
- 0:38And even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
- 0:40But the question is, what does that training look like?
- 0:44So that's what we're going to be talking about in this episode of World View Matters.
- 0:48Before we do that, though, we've got some business to take care of.
- 0:50We are in season number three of producing World View Matters podcast, praise god, because
- 0:56you never know how things are going to go when you start something new.

- 2:35So I want to bring in today's guest.
- 2:37The website is traininggodlywarriors.com, traininggodlywarriors.com.
- 2:45Kelsey Studebaker is a former Christian school teacher turned homeschool mom of seven little
- 2:52blessings, warriors and training, she calls them ages two to 13.
- 2:57Kelsey has another website called teacher gems.com.
- 3:03She also has written articles for Old Schoolhouse magazine and has been a guest blogger on several
- 3:08websites, including Mines in Bloom and move it Christian and more.
- 3:13And she's on Facebook, you can connect with her there and her brand new book and workbook,
- 3:19the companion resource.
- 3:21This, there's so much that has gone into this so that I'm going to ask her about training godly
- 3:27warriors such an important topic, knowing that children walk away from the faith of their
- 3:34raising the Christian faith, they start doubting by the time they're in middle school.
- 3:38So by the time they're in high school, they're gone, used to be after one year in college.
- 3:42Well, not anymore.
- 3:43They start leaving sooner now.
- 3:45We're trying to prevent that and people like Kelsey is doing something about it with training godly
- 3:50warriors.
- 3:51The book, Kelsey, good to see you.
- 3:52Thanks for your time.
- 3:54Thank you for having me.
- 3:56Yeah, so appreciate you not only doing the book, but the workbook so people can practically
- 4:01work through this and you've got a lot of great ideas for application.
- 4:04So let's start with the first question.
- 4:07These, there's a lot that went into this.
- 4:09I've written books and I know how much it takes and just looking at some of the content.
- 4:14How long did it, when did you start writing?
- 4:17Is this years of gathering things from a homeschooling and trying to raise your kids up and
- 4:22discipling your kids, tell us about that process first.
- 4:26So I actually didn't have a plan to write a book.
- 4:30It was a few years ago, a three years ago, where I felt the Lord prompting me to host
- 4:35a homeschool mom's retreat.
- 4:38And as I, and when I volunteered to do that, I better pray about what, you know, encouraging
- 4:43inspirational message the Lord would have me share with the moms.
- 4:47And so I started praying about it and then one morning as I was reading my Bible, I came
- 4:52across Psalm 78.
- 4:55And then in this Psalm, asaf is the writer and he's one of the Levites assigned by David
- 4:59to be a temple musician and he's giving a plea to the Israelites and he says, oh, my
- 5:05people, listen, open your ears to what I'm about to say to you.
- 5:08He says, we will not hide these truths from our children.
- 5:11We will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of our Lord, about his power
- 5:15and his mighty wonders.
- 5:17So then he goes on to tell them how their ancestors had failed to do that and the consequences
- 5:21of their failure.
- 5:22They lost their fear of the Lord, they began to continually sin against him and it wasn't
- 5:27until the Lord began killing them that they finally repented.
- 5:30But then it says in verse 36 that all they gave him was the lip service and their hearts
- 5:35were not loyal to him.
- 5:37And so reading those words really pierced my heart and made me long for my own children,
- 5:42seven precious children to avoid the superficial faith.
- 5:45And so I cried out to the Lord and said, Lord, how do we train our children to be godly
- 5:49warriors who don't just know the right things to say, but who actively live out their faith
- 5:54in the way that brings you glory?
- 5:56And it was in that moment that I felt the Holy Spirit say that is what I want you to teach
- 6:00the moms.
- 6:01And so I share, I ended up sharing this with the moms and long story short, I wrote this
- 6:04book after they encouraged me to share it with others.
- 6:07Well, I'm just going to flip right quick over to page 147.
- 6:11But there's so many great quotes, so many excerpts that you highlight throughout the
- 6:16book.
- 6:17And this tells you a lot about you and about the book.
- 6:20It says godly warriors must read and obey God's word and be careful to develop a keen sense
- 6:27of awareness through critical thinking skills, discernment and apologetics.
- 6:33So like you said, not just be able to have certain responses that are canned, maybe like
- 6:38we grow up, you know, why do you believe the Bible because or why do you think that the
- 6:42Bible is true or whatever?
- 6:44Why do you believe God?
- 6:45Because the Bible says so.
- 6:47That's it.
- 6:48You know, we don't have a lot more that goes deeper than that, but you're you're going
- 6:50a lot deeper in the book before we get more into some questions specifically about the
- 6:55book and the workbook, Kelsey.
- 6:58I think you've got a very important story that maybe a lot of viewers and listeners cannot
- 7:04maybe relate to in the strength and the Christian support you had in your family,
- 7:08growing up, talk to us about your parents.
- 7:10And I know you'd like to share, I'd like you to share about your grandmother's influence
- 7:14on you.
- 7:15Yes.
- 7:16So I have been very blessed in my life with some very strong godly warrior role models.
- 7:22And starting with my grandmother who died when I was only 12, but whose impact on my
- 7:27life has lasted all these years, she was such a strong Christian.
- 7:32She would share the gospel with anyone she met.
- 7:35She just exuded a love for Jesus.
- 7:37She never shied away from tough discussions, but she always did it with gentleness and
- 7:43love.
- 7:44And so that has just really impacted me.
- 7:46And then also my dad is the epitome of a godly warrior.
- 7:51He reminds me a lot of the or Philip, the evangelist in Acts 8 when the Holy Spirit comes
- 7:57to him and he says, go and walk alongside this carriage until that he could witness to
- 8:02the Ethiopian eunuch.
- 8:04And it says that Philip ran to go and share with him.
- 8:08And so he didn't hesitate to follow the Holy Spirit's leading in his life.
- 8:12And I feel like my dad is that just to explain to him to the tea, he, well, if he sees a
- 8:17need, he just runs to go and meet it.
- 8:20My mom as well, they're always serving serving others.
- 8:24They are opening their home to others.
- 8:26We always have people living with us growing up.
- 8:29They just have such servant hearts and they love to share the gospel.
- 8:33My dad hosts weekly Bible studies.
- 8:36So yes, they've had a huge impact on my life for sure.
- 8:39Well, I want to include the subtitle, which is just as important, I think is the title.
- 8:44I'm not sure if I, yeah, maybe I did share it, but it's training godly warriors.
- 8:49The subtitle is how to take your children through spiritual, basic training.
- 8:55And I like the way you used military information and concepts and training.
- 9:01And where did you get that idea to put into this?
- 9:03Were you totally in the warrior soldier mindset when you did that?
- 9:09So when I cried out to the Lord and said, how do we train our children to be godly warriors?
- 9:14And he said, like, that's what I want you to teach the moms.
- 9:16I thought, okay, well, I don't know anything about being a warrior.
- 9:19I've never been the military.
- 9:21And so my natural thought was, well, what does the military do?
- 9:24And so I started studying the military's basic training and quickly found that many of
- 9:29the underlying principles could be applied to a spiritual basic training.
- 9:33And I've also blessed to have a brother-in-law who was in the special forces of the Marine
- 9:37Corps.
- 9:38So he was a great sounding board for me as I wrote this book as well.
- 9:43I'm looking at something on page 26.
- 9:45This is really interesting to me that you would put this in here and I want you to explain
- 9:49why.
- 9:51I think I know, but you've got lenses to view the world.
- 9:55You've got three different lenses.
- 9:57You've got types of worldviews.
- 10:00You've got a biblical worldview.
- 10:02You've got a partial biblical, partial secular worldview, which is really, I think probably
- 10:09a large part of the church in America, sadly.
- 10:12And then you've got a non-biblical worldview or secular worldview with no lenses.
- 10:19But I'd love for you to explain why you decided to put that in there, especially kind of
- 10:24pointing out that this is a problem with some people maybe one foot in the Bible, one
- 10:29foot in the world, the secular world.
- 10:31Go ahead, Kelsey.
- 10:32Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:34So I like to simplify things for my children.
- 10:36I know there is a plethora of worldviews out there, but I think they can all fall into
- 10:41one of these three categories.
- 10:43Either we have a biblical worldview where we believe the entire Bible is God's absolute
- 10:47truth, or we may have a partial biblical, partial secular, where we believe some parts
- 10:52of the Bible are true, but not all, and we kind of pick Jews what we like, which is probably
- 10:57the most dangerous one to have, or we have no biblical worldview.
- 11:02And so I use this, the example of abortion with my children when I'm teaching this and
- 11:07say, you know, we believe that abortion is murder because we see everything through
- 11:11the lens of Scripture.
- 11:13And we know from God's word that we are destroying a human life created in his image, whereas
- 11:18those who are missing their biblical lenses do not think abortion is murder.
- 11:23They just view the baby as a clump of cells that can be destroyed without much thought.
- 11:27And because their biblical lenses are missing, they lack a fear of the Lord that tells them
- 11:31they're destroying an innocent human being created in God's image.
- 11:35And so I think just simplifying it for our children, but also showing them the importance
- 11:39of having those biblical lenses.
- 11:43By the way, the middle one, you might want to call it cafeteria Christianity.
- 11:48You know, you kind of go through the cafeteria line and pick a little bit of this, maybe
- 11:50a little bit of that.
- 11:51Oh my goodness.
- 11:53So I know I'm jumping around quite a bit, but as I was flipping through the book, there's
- 11:58just things that stood out to me.
- 11:59This is one of the challenging things.
- 12:01I had a pastor when I lived in Southern California of a Calvary Chapel, Bob Coopany.
- 12:07I think that was his name.
- 12:09And he would always say he was a former police officer, became a pastor.
- 12:13So he kind of had that strict discipline, like military-like background in training.
- 12:19And he was a no-bible, no-breakfast guy.
- 12:23And so on page 63, you've got this simple encouragement, Bible, before breakfast.
- 12:29You really focus on, you're talking about training children up, but you're also helping
- 12:34moms or dads.
- 12:36Usually it's the mom who has at home with the children going through this kind of book
- 12:40and helping them.
- 12:42So that's a very important priority to say, okay, word of God, we feed on the word of God
- 12:48before we feed our bodies, food.
- 12:50So talk to us a little bit about that.
- 12:52Yes, I got that from Ray Comfort.
- 12:55He always says, Bible, before breakfast, I love that.
- 12:58But it's important that we feed ourselves spiritually before we feed ourselves physically.
- 13:07Paul talks about that, too, and just the importance of getting in the word daily.
- 13:12And then also, like you mentioned, modeling it for our children.
- 13:17There is a professor, Christian Smith, who's a professor of sociology at the University
- 13:21of Notre Dame.
- 13:22And he conducted a 16-year study following 3,000 adolescents, or children from adolescents
- 13:30through adulthood.
- 13:31And he found that the number one reason why some children stay in the faith that they were
- 13:36brought up in is because of the impact of their parents leading by example.
- 13:41And so it's just so important that we are in the word daily.
- 13:44Our children can see through hypocrisy.
- 13:47And so we want to be genuine in our own faith.
- 13:49And we can't train our children to be godly warriors if we're not being an example of a
- 13:53godly warrior ourselves.
- 13:55So I just think it's so important getting in the word daily and modeling that for our children
- 14:00as well.
- 14:01Amen.
- 14:02And another thing you model is evangelism.
- 14:04So when we come back, we're going to take a very brief pause where with Kelsey, Stude
- 14:08Baker, when we come back, we're going to talk about sharing the gospel and how she's
- 14:12got practical steps that you can actually help your kids do some role-playing.
- 14:17Everything I'll have her walk us through that when we come right back on World View Matters.
- 14:22Introducing the World View Matters Conference coming to Green Bay, Wisconsin May 1st and
- 14:272nd, 2026.
- 14:28Here are some of the featured speakers, Ken Michael, Olivier Melnick, Tim Chafee, Mark
- 14:36and Amber Archer, Laura Perry Smalls, Dr. Jake Jacobs, Jay Seagart, Gary Caw, Scott
- 14:44Shara and Elijah Abraham.
- 14:47That's the World View Matters Conference May 1st and 2nd, 2026, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- 14:53And we will let you know as soon as the registration is up and the website is up for the conference,
- 15:00it's going to be fun.
- 15:01It's going to be exciting and great benefit to the body of Christ locally and regionally.
- 15:05So Kelsey and I do want to get to the workbook.
- 15:08So anytime you want to transition or add something from the workbook, please do.
- 15:13But I'm going over to chapter 9 simulations and on page 194, a great little chart there
- 15:20with six steps on sharing the gospel.
- 15:23So walk through that.
- 15:24I think that's so important to raise or train godly warriors to share the gospel.
- 15:31Yes.
- 15:32So just helping our children to learn how to share the gospel first and foremost, we can
- 15:37do role playing with them where we play the part of the skeptic as they share the gospel
- 15:42with us.
- 15:43And then we can help them adjust their approach and also like set them up for rejection as
- 15:50well because we are going to have to deal with rejection at times.
- 15:54And so helping them learn to be able to handle that is important as well.
- 15:58And then we just one thing we like to do is we like to carry gospel tracks with us.
- 16:03And we will even bring little booklets to the dentist office and set a booklet on the
- 16:09table.
- 16:10And it's just a simple way to share the gospel.
- 16:12We don't even have to talk to anybody.
- 16:13We can just leave it there as a simple way to like start getting in the habit of always
- 16:18being prepared with an answer, always coming prepared with a gospel track.
- 16:23It's also a great icebreaker for conversations.
- 16:26So I like to carry the Living Waters YouTube channel a little card with me and I will go
- 16:32out to people and say, Hey, do you like YouTube?
- 16:35Check out this channel.
- 16:36It's my favorite.
- 16:37And everybody loves YouTube.
- 16:39They always take it and they're, you know, it's just a little way to help our children
- 16:44to break the ice and conversations and get that conversation started.
- 16:50So at the end of each chapter, you've got questions, you know, to think about to review
- 16:56the chapter and kind of apply practical things.
- 16:59Now how is, I love that idea, by the way, that's very important.
- 17:03So how is that different maybe from the workbook?
- 17:08Yeah, so at the end of each chapter, there are questions to help you to come up with
- 17:14a strategic plan to be able to immediately implement with your children from the things
- 17:19that you've learned in each chapter.
- 17:21The workbook is activity pages for students for children to do with their parents.
- 17:27It's a 30 day spiritual basic training unit study.
- 17:31So I give you ideas for each day and then there's activity pages to go along with it.
- 17:36And so this is geared towards, well, the home school family I had in mind when I created
- 17:40this.
- 17:41So I tried to differentiate it for a variety of ages.
- 17:44So it's probably about grades one to five and just different activity pages to help your
- 17:50children learn the principles that were conveyed in the book.
- 17:54There's a lot in there.
- 17:55I mean, my goodness and all the sections.
- 17:58So I don't remember if you shared how long it took for you to do both the book and
- 18:04the workbook.
- 18:06It was three years, three years, but I'm busy.
- 18:11I'm a busy mom.
- 18:12I have seven children.
- 18:13So I only do it when I have time.
- 18:16So there's moms out there with maybe one or two young kids going, geez, we had to put
- 18:21the pressure on, we had to raise the bar or Kelsey of bar of expectations.
- 18:26So let's wrap up maybe the book and then I'll jump over to the workbook for the last
- 18:30couple questions.
- 18:31Chapter 11 tells about advanced weapons training.
- 18:35What's that about?
- 18:36So in this chapter, we explore the gifts of the spirit and how we can use the gifts that
- 18:41God has given us in alignment with his word while being led by the Holy Spirit to have
- 18:46the most impact for the kingdom.
- 18:51Awesome.
- 18:52Gifts of the spirit.
- 18:53They're often ignored.
- 18:54You know, there's that debate, are they still working today?
- 18:57We all have different gifts, talents.
- 18:59So I appreciate you putting that in there.
- 19:02And the companion resource now, the workbook, like I said, 30-day spiritual basic training
- 19:09unit, just looking at the questions, looking at the charts, the armor of God, just different
- 19:16things you put in there.
- 19:19What does each commandment say?
- 19:21Again, friends, this is for younger children.
- 19:24But Kelsey, this is really a good thing for parents, especially moms, homeschool moms
- 19:30or any mom that wants to take their kids through this kind of training, spiritual training.
- 19:34Tell us more about that.
- 19:36Yeah, so I wanted to keep it simple and practical because I think a lot of times we get the spiritual,
- 19:43you know, do this, do that, but how do we do it?
- 19:45And so I wanted to give all the tools necessary to start this and it's basic training.
- 19:51So it's the first step.
- 19:52So it's not like, do this and you're going to be good.
- 19:55So it's the first step in training our children.
- 19:58And so, you know, even if I could just share one example, there's one page I talk about,
- 20:04the idea of meditating on God's word and how this word meditation has been redefined
- 20:10by our world to be emptying our minds.
- 20:13When God's word says just the opposite, he says we need to fill our minds with his word
- 20:18and meditating on his word day and night.
- 20:21And I like to use the analogy, the parable that Jesus gave in Matthew 12, where he talks
- 20:26about the man that had the unclean spirit and how when that spirit was cast out, he came
- 20:32back with seven more evil spirits.
- 20:34And when he came back, he found that the home had been emptied, swept clean, and put
- 20:40in order.
- 20:41And so I say to my kids, well, what was wrong with that, doesn't it sound like he cleaned
- 20:44up his life?
- 20:45He got rid of the filth.
- 20:46But then I remind them that to be empty is to be vulnerable to the enemy's attacks.
- 20:51Just like if a field's left empty, it's soon overtaken by weeds or a home left empty
- 20:55is soon overtaken by insects.
- 20:57And if we are empty, we're vulnerable.
- 20:59So then I ask my kids, what should the man have done instead or after he had emptied
- 21:04his home of this filth?
- 21:05Well, he should have repented of allowing that filth in his life in the first place.
- 21:10He should have put his trust in Jesus and he should have filled his mind with God's
- 21:14word.
- 21:16And that way, when the enemy came back, he would find that the home was no longer vacant,
- 21:21but filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 21:22And he would now have the sort of the spirit to fight off the enemy when he came back.
- 21:26And so just practical things like that that we can teach our children to show them the
- 21:30importance of Scripture and meditating on the word daily.
- 21:34And then also not allowing the devil with his tactics of redefining words to trip them
- 21:41up.
- 21:42Yes, redefining words, he's evil, scheming, he's really good at that and the left does
- 21:49are really good at redefining words.
- 21:51I wrote a book about that, 2017, called redefining truth.
- 21:58Anyway, didn't mean to give myself a plug there, but it came up.
- 22:02Kelsey, your former Christian teacher, tell us about what you do on the website or what
- 22:07is at TeacherGems.com.
- 22:09I know I mentioned at the very beginning.
- 22:12Yeah, so I was a Christian school teacher for six years before I had my first child
- 22:17and decided to stay home with my children and my sisters and sister-in-laws were homeschooling
- 22:23at the time.
- 22:24And so I kept sending them emails with, oh, check out this great website, check out this
- 22:28website.
- 22:29And then I thought, well, that's silly.
- 22:30They're not going to search through their emails to find these websites all the time.
- 22:33So I should just put a website together with a list of all these great educational resources.
- 22:39And so that's how the website TeacherGems started.
- 22:41It has a bunch of different websites that I found helpful in my teaching.
- 22:47And then I've also been creating teaching resources.
- 22:51Since I left the classroom, I started creating my own resources and selling them on Teachers
- 22:57by Teachers and also my own website.
- 23:00Yep, I noticed in the back of the workbook, you've got recommended resources, you've got
- 23:04books for further study, you've got books to read to your children, you've got YouTube
- 23:09channels, you've got videos, just a couple of pages of recommended resources there.
- 23:14I see Ken Ham, Ray Comfort, Lee Strobel, Kirk Cameron, way to go, Kelsey.
- 23:20So really quick, I want to go back.
- 23:22How did you connect?
- 23:23We've had Dran Reese on this podcast.
- 23:26I met her at a Liberty Pastors conference.
- 23:29It was either the one in Texas or Oklahoma.
- 23:31Maybe she was at both, but I met her and she's been on here.
- 23:34And of course, she's with BraveSalt.com, the Salt and Light Council.
- 23:39You did a lecture last month on training, godly warriors.
- 23:43I'm just curious, how did you connect with Dran Reese and the Salt and Light Council?
- 23:48Yeah, so I'm actually the Salt and Light coordinator for our church for the ministry at our church.
- 23:55And so I'm an affiliate with the Salt and Light Council.
- 23:58Oh, that met her and she's wonderful.
- 24:02They have such a great ministry.
- 24:03If people don't know about the Salt and Light Council, it's a wonderful resource for
- 24:08your churches to get plugged in and to be able to start this ministry to help your congregations
- 24:13learn to be Salt and Light in the world.
- 24:16I highly recommend checking that out.
- 24:18They have, I think they have monthly trainings as well, so you can do that.
- 24:23BraveSalt.com, I gotta get in touch with Dran again and get her back on.
- 24:29That says a lot about your pastor and that he gets it, that Christians are supposed to do
- 24:35something Monday through Saturday outside of church walls to impact culture for Christ,
- 24:40impact the society around us for righteousness.
- 24:44Tell us about what's the name of your church.
- 24:46I know you're in Michigan.
- 24:48Just tell us your church and pastor.
- 24:50Yeah, so I go to Georgetown Christian Fellowship.
- 24:53It's in Hudsonville, Michigan.
- 24:55Our pastor is Calvin Bergzmann and he's very involved with the Liberty pastors of Michigan
- 25:00and it's just awesome.
- 25:02We love it.
- 25:03My husband and I are both precinct delegates.
- 25:05We're involved with the political side of things as well.
- 25:09But we know we need to be living out our faith in the public square as well and we can't
- 25:14just be church Christians and not living it out in the world.
- 25:18We have Paul Blair on the podcast often.
- 25:22I've been at two couple conferences there.
- 25:23That was in 2020, I think, when the world was going nuts with COVID and misinformation
- 25:30in the nonsense.
- 25:33Here we went and did a conference, Liberty pastors and it was kind of interesting.
- 25:38You go out and this is outside of the hotel, you know, everyone's wearing their mask.
- 25:41You walk into the conference, where's all the masks?
- 25:44Anyway.
- 25:45The hotel was very cool about that, by the way, and I think grapevine, Texas.
- 25:49But anyway, we've got about a minute and a half here, Kelsey.
- 25:52I just want to give you your busy mom, homeschool mom.
- 25:56You've got seven kids.
- 25:57You're doing a great job.
- 25:58I know it doesn't feel like it at times because it just seems like you're just trying to
- 26:02keep up, as you mentioned, just remaining sane.
- 26:05But just encourage young parents, specifically moms right now and however way you'd like
- 26:10in the last minute or so, please.
- 26:13I would say the best thing you can do is to work on your personal relationship with
- 26:18the Lord, make time with him your daily priority.
- 26:21So for me, that looks like I read his word every morning on my phone before I get out
- 26:26of bed.
- 26:27Before my kids can come interrupt me, they know it's mommy's quiet time.
- 26:31I just make it a priority.
- 26:33My husband and I are doing the read through the Bible and a year plan.
- 26:35We do that every year together and it's just so rich.
- 26:39We also do Bible Study Fellowship, which is a great international Bible study that people
- 26:45can check out as well.
- 26:46Awesome.
- 26:47So, friends, book and workbook, training, godly warriors, the website traininggodlywarriors.com.
- 26:55Do you also, I know you're on Amazon too, right, Kelsey?
- 26:58Do you recommend people go in there or your personal website?
- 27:01Yes.
- 27:02So they can go on the website on the shop page and that'll take them directly to the link
- 27:06to buy the book on Amazon or they can search for it on Amazon.
- 27:09Okay.
- 27:10All right.
- 27:11Training godly warriors.
- 27:12Great topic.
- 27:13That's why I wanted to have you on.
- 27:14Thank you.
- 27:15I don't remember how we connected, but I'm so glad because this is so important and I do
- 27:19see a movement of youth being more open to the gospel, more open to spiritual things.
- 27:24I think, you know, baby boomers and millennials kind of, I don't know, we missed something
- 27:29there, but the Gen Z and younger, younger children and it takes parents and of course the
- 27:34church in America to do this to get on board.
- 27:36Thanks for your time today, Kelsey.
- 27:38Thank you so much for having me.
- 27:40You're most welcome.
- 27:41God bless you friends and as always, keep speaking the truth about things that matter.
