- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scroll, the Internet says goodbye to
- 0:04tenor GIF Search the meaning of Cheesy Michael and Dua Lipa's
- 0:09library for banned books. Hi everyone, welcome to Mini
- 0:13Scroll, the daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the
- 0:17biggest stories from social media, the creator economy and
- 0:20the digital space. Every Monday through Thursday
- 0:22and sometimes Fridays. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:25the founder of the Australian youth digital media brand
- 0:28Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:31everyone. OK, I've got to say, today's
- 0:35mini scroll is kind of giving a Friday mini scroll.
- 0:38The stories are so incredibly random.
- 0:40So let's all manifest that overnight some crazy ass shit
- 0:44happens and I can have like a big good mini scroll for you
- 0:47guys tomorrow on Friday because I feel like Fridays, I'm always
- 0:50scraping the bottom of the barrel for like, interesting
- 0:53stories because so much has already happened that I've
- 0:55covered. And today, I mean, these stories
- 0:58are what they are, OK, they're decent, but it is kind of
- 1:02random. Anyways, before I get into it,
- 1:03Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 1:05Please Spotify star rate US. It helps us so much, helps us
- 1:08grow. It helps us get sponsors.
- 1:10You guys have been going in on the Spotify comments and I'm
- 1:13loving it. I'm loving how many Spotify
- 1:16comments we're getting recently. It's so iconic.
- 1:19I'm just so proud of the community that we have built
- 1:23here on Mini Scroll. It literally keeps me going in
- 1:26our darkest hours here at Centennial World.
- 1:29All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:31The first story that I have for you guys today is we are losing
- 1:34access to one of the internet's favorite GIF galleries.
- 1:38And I'm sorry, I am actually a GIF truther, OK?
- 1:41I have always, my entire life called it GIF, but I was
- 1:44researching for this story, obviously, like I wanted to make
- 1:47sure I was saying it correctly because everybody's always like
- 1:48GIF. GIF.
- 1:49Apparently the founder of the GIF said that it is GIF.
- 1:54So I'm going to be using GIF. That is why if you guys are GIF
- 1:57truthers too, just know I wish I could be saying GIF this entire
- 2:01story. OK, this is definitely mini tech
- 2:03coded. And when Annabelle and I were
- 2:04talking about this day, she was like, I literally just like
- 2:07forgot to cover it yesterday. So that's the power of mini
- 2:09scroll. If you forget to cover a story,
- 2:11there's always next episode, there's always tomorrow.
- 2:14So we're covering it on mini scrolls.
- 2:16So while GIFs, GIFs, no GIFs. Well, GIFs were once considered
- 2:21very chewy. They never really fell out of
- 2:24the zeitgeist, especially on places like Stand Twitter and
- 2:27even the TikTok comment section. Now there's actually a whole GIF
- 2:31subculture on Stan Twitter where like some of the GIFs that are
- 2:34famous, like they wouldn't be significant anywhere else.
- 2:37It's a very interesting place to be.
- 2:39And do you guys remember the eraofthe.com when we would all
- 2:43have GIFs in our articles? Like that was when I started
- 2:47writing online, like when I started publishing online and we
- 2:50would be putting GIFs, GIFs in there all the time.
- 2:55Like honestly, it was such an iconic time in Internet culture.
- 2:58I miss it actually, but it definitely got to a point where
- 3:01it was like a little bit chooky. Anyways, Tenor is essentially a
- 3:05gallery that has historically supplied GIFs to many different
- 3:08platforms, including Twitter and Discord.
- 3:11And there are of course alternatives like Jiffy, but
- 3:13Tenor was one of the most popular and one of the Ogs.
- 3:16Now Tenor started as an independent company in the early
- 3:18twenty 10's and was acquired by Google in March 2018.
- 3:22Google set up an API for Tenor which allowed other platforms to
- 3:25access the Jif library. That is until this year.
- 3:29So in January it was announced that Tenor would be winding down
- 3:32its API access on Google for developers.
- 3:35A pop up read quote. As of Jan 2026 we are no longer
- 3:38accepting new API clients. And then 2 days ago, on June
- 3:4330th, Google shut down the API. So as the statement reads,
- 3:48quote, as part of an ongoing effort to focus resources on
- 3:51enhancing our core products, we've made the decision to
- 3:54sunset the Tenor API on June 30, 2026.
- 3:58So the Tenor GIFs will be available on Google owned apps
- 4:03but not on any other apps essentially.
- 4:06So in a piece for ours Technica, Ryan Whitman argues that quote.
- 4:11The real problem was probably that Tenor was free and Google
- 4:14didn't see a way it could make money from a GIF API.
- 4:17Not everything needs to be monetized.
- 4:19They're owned by Google. Like we are losing the ancient
- 4:23texts. Let us keep the fucking GIFs.
- 4:27Like are you joking? OK so social media users, they
- 4:30are not happy. They are feeling the same
- 4:33sentiment as me. Nikita Byer, head of product,
- 4:36edx, responded to a tweet from a user complaining.
- 4:39Writing not in our control. Tenor went out of business last
- 4:41week and we were forced to migrate.
- 4:43So yeah, the content available in Jif libraries varies
- 4:46depending on the service. So users are like, OK, I'm going
- 4:49to lose access to my library. Like my favorite reactions
- 4:52basically. And Holden Smith, who's like a
- 4:54TikTok pop culture commentator, he made a whole video about this
- 4:58and he described the situation as the modern day burning of the
- 5:01Library of Alexandria. And honestly, that is so
- 5:03dramatic, but I understand what he's saying.
- 5:05Like we are losing the ancient texts.
- 5:07Like this is another nail in the proverbial coffin of the kind of
- 5:12like oldworld.com era of the 20 tens.
- 5:15And we have already lost so much from that era.
- 5:19Like we have lost all of the Myspace archives.
- 5:22So many ofthe.com publications that existed during that time
- 5:26that were documenting like culture and history and what was
- 5:29happening online have all folded and all of their content is
- 5:32basically just gone. We almost lost the way back
- 5:34machine. What was that earlier this year
- 5:36or last year? Like we're in an unwell place.
- 5:39If someone has an idea on how to preserve any of this Internet
- 5:42culture stuff, let me know. I'll get behind it.
- 5:45I have like $2.00 to invest in it, but I'll invest that $2.00.
- 5:50OK the next story that I have for you guys today is we need to
- 5:53talk about the cheesy Michael meme.
- 5:56This meme has been circulating for a long time.
- 5:58It only recently came across my desk, but I feel like the actual
- 6:01discourse around this meme has come to a head.
- 6:05OK so this meme originated with a TikTok by user at niche Tony.
- 6:10In these videos, Tony is attempting to prank his roommate
- 6:12who he calls cheesy Michael. If you guys know why he calls
- 6:16him cheesy Michael please let me know.
- 6:18Comments down below because I I was trying to figure this out
- 6:23and I couldn't figure out why exactly he calls him Cheesy
- 6:25Michael. OK so the prank is like low
- 6:27stakes. Tony places random items on the
- 6:30door handle of Cheesy Michael's alleged door so that when he
- 6:35opens the door, the item falls on the floor.
- 6:38The catch is that Cheesy Michael never opens it, so viewers never
- 6:42actually get to see this prank unfold.
- 6:44Tony has made so many versions of this prank because people
- 6:47keep waiting. Who is Cheesy Michael?
- 6:49What is going to happen when he opens the door?
- 6:51And there's, like, this random item on his door handle?
- 6:53Like, what's going on with this prank?
- 6:55Why is this going so viral? So people are, like, waiting
- 6:58with bated breath to see this prank unfold, and it never
- 7:01unfolds. And he has made, like I said, so
- 7:03many versions of it. The most popular one was with an
- 7:06egg, and it has over 8 million views.
- 7:08So according to Know Your Meme, the first time Tony posted a
- 7:10video like this was back in November 2025.
- 7:13He placed a packet of cookies on the door handle.
- 7:15But the meme only really went viral after someone behind the
- 7:18camera started singing a little song with the lyrics.
- 7:22Cheesy Michael, Open up the door.
- 7:24And it's important to note that this person sounds like a
- 7:27different person to Tony. It doesn't sound like it's Tony
- 7:30singing this. Today I'm going to be pranking
- 7:33Cheesy Michael with this egg so that when he opens his door it
- 7:37smashes on the floor and ruins his life.
- 7:41Cheesy Michael. Cheesy Michael.
- 7:48Cheesy Michael. Cheesy Michael.
- 7:53So now with this song, the Cheesy Michael meme gained
- 7:55traction because user started remixing and covering Cheesy
- 8:00Michael Open up the door and people are singing it in
- 8:03different styles like opera and with whole bands.
- 8:06It's become this entire almost like a universe in and of
- 8:09itself. So this meme is just like
- 8:29textbook meaningless content, like brain rock content that
- 8:34TikTok loves. It kind of reminds me of the
- 8:36Zendaya hat theory where it's just like super nonsensical but
- 8:39everyone feels invested in the lore because they're in on the
- 8:43joke. And when it comes to Cheesy
- 8:45Michael, there are a few big questions on everyone's mind
- 8:48that I think keep people coming back and that have kept this
- 8:50meme going for so long. The 1st is whether Cheesy
- 8:54Michael is even real. So on a Reddit post for the R
- 8:58slash Michael subreddit someone wrote quote does Cheesy Michael
- 9:01ever open the door? We all know Cheesy Michael, but
- 9:04do we ever see him? And I am very interested in his
- 9:06lore if anyone knows anything. If Cheesy Michael ever opens the
- 9:10door on camera, can someone please tell me what video it is?
- 9:12I'm consumed with curiosity. So the fact that nobody knows
- 9:16anything about Cheesy Michael kind of allows viewers to
- 9:20project onto him, which is a major part of lore building in
- 9:23meme culture. And this is really how memes
- 9:26become characters and like, universes in and of themselves.
- 9:30And on top of this, the fact that viewers never get to see
- 9:32what happens when Cheesy Michael opens that door obviously keeps
- 9:36us coming back, right? Even though he actually may not
- 9:39be real. But being aware that he also may
- 9:42not be real is, like, part of the joke because meme culture is
- 9:45so steeped in irony. So another question that viewers
- 9:48can't stop asking is who's actually singing the Cheesy
- 9:52Michael song? Because like I said, it sounds
- 9:53like there's two people. It doesn't sound like it's Tony
- 9:55singing it. I think I found out the guy who
- 9:59was singing Cheesy Michael, the guy who was trying to prank
- 10:02Cheesy Michael, he, he sounds like he's in a like a hallway.
- 10:06He doesn't sound like he's behind the door.
- 10:09He sounds like he's like right next to the guy recording and
- 10:13they're in a hallway and his voice is bouncing off both.
- 10:16Walls OK, so aside from essentially like my analysis on
- 10:19like why memes go viral and you know why people get so invested
- 10:23in these like meme universes, meme expert Aiden Walker, who we
- 10:26have had on this podcast before, shouted Aiden.
- 10:29He has chimed in with his analysis of the cheesy Michael
- 10:31meme. So he says that everyone has a
- 10:34cheesy Michael and that is what has made this so popular.
- 10:37So what Aiden describes is like an event or person that you are
- 10:40waiting for, but it never comes. And within this frame of
- 10:43analysis, he claims that the cheesy Michael meme represents
- 10:46the mystery of faith and how we grapple with the unknown because
- 10:50Internet culture really is that serious, you guys.
- 10:54OK, and then to leave you all with something to think about if
- 10:57I haven't left you with enough to think about regarding the
- 11:00cheesy Michael meme. When we were researching this,
- 11:02we found a YouTube video that Tony, the one who started the
- 11:05meme, actually published about a month ago where he claims to be
- 11:10explaining. He calls it the Michael verse
- 11:13explained. OK, let me play a clip from this
- 11:16video for you. Today I'm going to be explaining
- 11:19Easy Michael's Law and the Michael verse as a whole.
- 11:23Golden Michael, one of the first Michael's alongside Dark
- 11:28Michael. These two are rumoured to be
- 11:31brothers. The Founding Michael's Golden
- 11:35Michael represents peace, bravery and kindness, and he
- 11:40might be considered one of the strongest Michaels in the
- 11:43Michael verse. Golden Michael has appeared in a
- 11:46few Tony videos. Overall a well respected
- 11:49character in the community. Dark Michael is also one of the
- 11:53founding Michaels. He's full of darkness and
- 11:56overall evil intent. He used to be close to Golden
- 12:00Michael until the darkness consumed them.
- 12:03So I'm going to say this leaves us with more questions and
- 12:05answers. However, I'm really loving how
- 12:09the creator of this meme isn't just allowing the meme to take
- 12:12on a life of its own. Like he is also creating the
- 12:16narration behind it, right? Like he is participating in
- 12:18this, which I really like. And I really shows that the
- 12:20person who created this, Tony, if that's even his name, is
- 12:24truly tapped in to what goes viral, what's happening online,
- 12:29meme culture, all of that. OK, the last story that I have
- 12:31for you guys today is Dua Lipa opens a library for censored
- 12:35books. I'm sorry, but Dua Lipa stays
- 12:38winning. Like I saw somebody, I think
- 12:40maybe it was a tweet somebody wrote whatever I ask God for, he
- 12:44triples it and gives it to Dua Lipa.
- 12:47And that is like a so true. OK, so this library is called
- 12:50the Manifesto Library and it is found inside the famous Lavaria.
- 12:55I'm sorry if I said that wrong. Lilo Bookshop in Porto,
- 12:58Portugal. So if you know anything about
- 13:00Dua Lipas, I guess recent arc in her career, this is not totally
- 13:05random. She has become known for Service
- 13:0895, which is a quote, global style arts and society venture,
- 13:12the ultimate cultural concierge at the service of a reader and a
- 13:16book club is part of Service 95. And she also used to interview
- 13:21authors on her podcast. Does she even have a podcast
- 13:24anymore? I'm sorry, I should have looked
- 13:25that up before this. But yeah, she has definitely
- 13:28done a lot with like reading and books and book clubs and
- 13:31culture. I will say I saw on the Good
- 13:33Noticings podcast host Clare and Ashley who have been on the
- 13:37podcast as well when they were celebrity memoir book club.
- 13:40And I saw them say that they, I think they met Dua Lipa at an
- 13:46event and they're like, Oh, yeah, we were in your
- 13:49recommended, like in your newsletter recommendation.
- 13:51And then apparently Julie was like, oh, I don't write those.
- 13:53OK. So the Manifesto Library is
- 13:55considered the first physical manifestation of Service 95.
- 13:59The library is a permanent collection of 100 books.
- 14:01Some of these books may have been banned, while others are
- 14:04restricted. So, for example, they may have
- 14:07been taken out of the school curriculum or removed from
- 14:09libraries because of their message service. 95 also
- 14:12explains that some of these books quote haven't been
- 14:14directly challenged, but instead do the challenging, whether of
- 14:18existing power structures or the suppression of individual and
- 14:20collective voices. The 100 books are split across
- 14:23four key themes, power, control, voice, and memory.
- 14:27Some of the titles that are listed on the website include
- 14:29The Color Purple, The Second Sex, and The Handmaid's Tale.
- 14:32So yes, a lot of people are really excited about this and
- 14:34think that this is a great example of an A Lister, like
- 14:38using their money and power and influence for something good.
- 14:41Especially her fans in the US are excited to see this
- 14:44considering book bans have become increasingly widespread.
- 14:47So pulling from data from the American Library Association,
- 14:50the Guardian reported that quote in 2020, five 5668 books were
- 14:56banned, representing 66% of the total number challenged, with an
- 14:59additional 920 censored through access restriction such as
- 15:04relocation on the library shelves.
- 15:06And books with LGBTQIA plus themes were over represented
- 15:10amongst those that have been banned and or challenged.
- 15:13Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 15:15Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 15:18Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 15:20Please Spotify star rate US. It helps us so much.
- 15:22It helps us grow. And I will talk to you guys
- 15:25tomorrow for a Friday mini scroll bye.
