Transcript
- 0:00It feels like no more than ever, people are chasing new countries, new lives, and new
- 0:05beginnings.
- 0:06But very few speak honestly about what it really takes to start over again when nobody
- 0:11knows your name.
- 0:12I am April Jackson, traveling the world speaking with interesting people who have chosen a life
- 0:17elsewhere.
- 0:18Today, I'm speaking with Shafawa Hilton, a beauty therapist, educator, and entrepreneur
- 0:24who left everything behind in Jamaica to chase her dreams here in Dubai.
- 0:28Our story is about patience, purpose, identity, and what it really takes to bet on yourself
- 0:34yet again.
- 0:35But first, I have to ask, babes, how did you get here?
- 0:39Ciao!
- 0:40Well, I mean, I just felt like I needed a change, I needed a change, and I didn't want to
- 0:50go to the US.
- 0:51Okay.
- 0:52I can't do with the snow.
- 0:54I didn't want to go to the UK, I can't do with the snow, I can't do with the cold.
- 0:59So I was like, this is a perfect place, as well as my aunt lives here, so it was even better
- 1:04for me.
- 1:05Take me back.
- 1:06Tell me a little bit about your childhood.
- 1:08Well, I was very shell-tired.
- 1:11Shell turd.
- 1:12It was home school church, because I sang in the choir, me and my sister, so yeah, it was
- 1:20home school church, and then my mom opened her business, home decor business, and that
- 1:27was where it was until wordy to go home.
- 1:29But even before that, you know, she would sell stuff from the back of her car, so I was
- 1:34used to seeing entrepreneurship from back then, and then my dad, he also is in the music
- 1:41industry.
- 1:42So for sure, I've been seeing entrepreneurship from Miyai Damani, as Jamaica would call
- 1:48it, you know?
- 1:49And in terms of your career pursuits when you're young, what do you want to be?
- 1:54I wanted to be a doctor.
- 1:55Yeah?
- 1:56Me too, and then I realized I can't do blood.
- 1:58Listen, I realized I'm going to like the sciences.
- 2:00I was like, this is ghetto hell, you know, I ain't doing no sciences, and I didn't love
- 2:06math.
- 2:07So I was like, no, this is not going to work.
- 2:09But then I think, when was it?
- 2:12Like I started, I think I was like in high school, and I started to like make up.
- 2:18And then, you know, I was like on YouTube, and I liked to see the girls transform.
- 2:27And so it started in college when I went to UTek back in Jamaica.
- 2:34And I was like, yeah, I'm going to do eyebrows.
- 2:36I'm going to do these girls' eyebrows, because I was seeing the girls' eyebrows and they
- 2:39needed to be fixed.
- 2:40I was like, yeah, no, let me fix your eyebrow, girl.
- 2:43And then I was like, yeah, I should do this.
- 2:46And then I started to shave the girls' eyebrows, charge them through into Jamaica and
- 2:49dollars.
- 2:50That's like probably a dollar, right?
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:54And then I started to shave it and fill it in.
- 2:58And yeah, the girls loved it.
- 3:00I was known as the eyebrow girl on the UTek campus, and then I started to do makeup.
- 3:05Yeah.
- 3:06So I learned from YouTube University.
- 3:08Yeah, man.
- 3:09You know, and then I got certified in that and then I went on to work on travel program.
- 3:15And I decided that I wanted to do something that, you know, like if the girls don't want
- 3:22makeup, they're going to want something else, right?
- 3:24Okay.
- 3:25You know, so I was like, yeah, maybe I should do lashes and microblading.
- 3:28So I went and I did a one-day lash course, one day lash course and then I did a two-day
- 3:37microblading course.
- 3:38So I was grateful at my first, I actually was staying at my friend in Florida and I'm
- 3:44telling you, I spent like 10 hours in her eyes.
- 3:47I'm sure her butt's still hurting her right now.
- 3:50I said, at every time, yeah, man, 10 hours and I was just, I just had a knock for it.
- 3:56I wasn't the best but I didn't give up right as I finished the training.
- 4:03I was legit in somebody's eyelash.
- 4:07Yeah, man.
- 4:08So that's all you have to do, it's right.
- 4:10That's all you have to make sure that you don't forget what you learned.
- 4:12Right.
- 4:13Yeah.
- 4:14I mean, it wasn't the best looking back.
- 4:16I'm so grateful for that course because it, it, it started me where I'm at.
- 4:21But honestly, if I had more money, I would have invested in something longer, something
- 4:26more thorough, you know, because usually, you know, when you have the money and you invest
- 4:30properly the first time, it seems you're a lot of time and you're able to make money
- 4:35faster.
- 4:36Sure.
- 4:37So you said you went for a work and travel program 2017, what was that for?
- 4:41If what is a work and travel program?
- 4:43Okay.
- 4:44So in you take, you have, you have the opportunity to go to the US to work.
- 4:50Oh, I didn't know that.
- 4:51Yeah.
- 4:52Okay.
- 4:53Yeah.
- 4:54So yeah, have a, have a bit of money.
- 4:55Right.
- 4:56I don't know.
- 4:57It's not something that's like compulsory, but it's usually people who, you know, they really
- 5:00want to give you a whole lot of opportunities that you can go there and you can work for four
- 5:05months, you know, in the summer and then like you come back, you can help for pay a school
- 5:11fee.
- 5:12I did that.
- 5:13I helped mommy pay a school fee and it also helped me to invest into the courses.
- 5:19Yeah, man.
- 5:20So it helps you come back to Jamaica, then you graduate, you take, yeah.
- 5:25And then what's our next step?
- 5:27What was my next step?
- 5:29Yeah.
- 5:30I was doing internship in college and I was like, yeah, no, I can't.
- 5:35I saw her to treat employees and I was like, no, I want to be the, I don't want to have
- 5:42to do this.
- 5:43Okay.
- 5:44So I was like, yeah, no.
- 5:45So I started my business.
- 5:46I mean, I was doing it from while I was in college from the $300.
- 5:49Yeah.
- 5:50Yeah, man.
- 5:51But they know, I was still in college when I came back from the work and travel program.
- 5:55So I was doing lashes.
- 5:56I was doing makeup on campus for graduate, Shawn, the girls love that.
- 6:00I was making money in college.
- 6:02Okay.
- 6:03Yeah, man.
- 6:04I had a lot of coffee.
- 6:05I had those skills.
- 6:06So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:07And then I just started my business, started my business and then some, I went to a expo
- 6:13and I was one of the vendors there and one of the top, like a top school back in Jamaica
- 6:19and I don't remember her name.
- 6:22What she had asked me, it's a makeup school.
- 6:25She owns a makeup school.
- 6:26She had asked me, I was doing a demo.
- 6:28I was doing a demo on how to make her bleed eyebrows, you know.
- 6:32And the girl, the young lady said to me, have you ever thought about teaching?
- 6:36I was like, no, I was like, I should teach.
- 6:38And she's like, you're so thorough, you know, like you, I think you do a really good job
- 6:43and hearing that from her because she's like the owner of one of the top makeup schools.
- 6:47I think it's face to face or face place.
- 6:51I think her name is Sharon.
- 6:54Trust me, man.
- 6:55When she said that to me, I was like, yeah, no, let me, let me see what that's all about.
- 7:00And then I started this university, you know, where I teach individuals to do lash extension
- 7:07on micro bleeding.
- 7:08And that was in 2020, COVID, that was when I had my first class.
- 7:13And I was like, everybody was telling me, shafa, do keep the class because you know, people
- 7:18don't want to tell you, if you come out for the road, this time like everybody was running
- 7:22up and down because of COVID.
- 7:24And they were like, don't keep the class because I still kept the class.
- 7:28And I had my first five students and they came and they learned.
- 7:32And I was like, yeah, no, I can't do five days anymore.
- 7:35I need to do seven days because I, I respect value.
- 7:40I love when people can get value from something that you are offering.
- 7:46So I realized that, you know, the five days wasn't working.
- 7:49The students were still asking me like a question and I was like, yeah, I'm going to do seven
- 7:52days and I'm going to do internship.
- 7:55So I was actually the first person to do so much these and do the internship.
- 8:00You know, so that was really the difference that I was trying to bring to the industry
- 8:04back in Jamaica.
- 8:06But the problem was the Dalit them couldn't afford it.
- 8:10I was probably one of the more premium premium academies back in Jamaica because everybody
- 8:18was doing one day or two day and trying, yeah, and they're trying like 400, 500 US.
- 8:27And that's cost effective, you know, it's short, it's cost effective, but because I sell
- 8:32products, I see the girls come to me and they're like, they don't know what they want.
- 8:37They don't know what to get.
- 8:38They don't know the name of the products because, you know, and I was like, yeah, no, I need
- 8:43to make sure that I bridge this gap and I offer something different.
- 8:49So the girls can be better, you know, and the work can be better across the board too.
- 8:55So yeah, I was really trying to do something different back in Jamaica.
- 8:58So I realized that that's the most that everybody loved the curriculum.
- 9:05They loved that.
- 9:06It was so much days and whatever.
- 9:07They were like, oh, it's so expensive.
- 9:11And I'm like, yeah, babe, it is what it is.
- 9:14And I'm not, I wasn't going to drop my prices because I know my value.
- 9:17I once you know your value, you can't.
- 9:20Is this when you start to get the itch that you need to leave?
- 9:23Yeah, I mean, I always felt like I didn't really belong there.
- 9:27Really?
- 9:27Yeah, I was like, well, I especially, I don't know if it was because I was trained in
- 9:32the States and I was exposed to how the girls like really, you know, when I used to do
- 9:39lashes in the States, the girls are booking their refills before back in Jamaica.
- 9:44When I tried out with the Jamaicans, it was so hard.
- 9:47It was, it was not the culture back in Jamaica for that.
- 9:50You know, I don't know if it was, you know, but that was just my experience.
- 9:56But yeah, no, I had a good rondo in Jamaica.
- 9:59My premium service is like my clients loved it.
- 10:02And honestly, I went back to Jamaica the other day and I really realized I was like, I'm
- 10:08so grateful to God that I was like, my clients really, it allowed me to see how valuable I was.
- 10:22Because I was, I started to really, I really didn't start, I started to lose it, lose the spark.
- 10:30As in being here.
- 10:31Being here.
- 10:32Okay, hold on.
- 10:33So you come here in November?
- 10:35No, I come here.
- 10:36I came here in October.
- 10:37You come here October, you go home after Christmas?
- 10:40No, I went just to visit.
- 10:42Okay, the family business I've been in December.
- 10:45So that you've been here for about two months before you go home.
- 10:48And when you say you're starting to lose it here, what does that mean?
- 10:51Yeah, because honestly, you know, you come, no clients.
- 10:55Back in Jamaica, I'm booked.
- 10:56I'm fully booked.
- 10:57Did you have a goal in terms of financially before you said I'm getting on the plane?
- 11:01I wanted to leave with with one million.
- 11:04That never happened.
- 11:05I almost know.
- 11:06Honestly, I almost made, I was at 800 grand.
- 11:09Okay.
- 11:10No lies.
- 11:11But you know, try to make it.
- 11:12I don't know.
- 11:13Right.
- 11:15But it's still impressive that you had a goal.
- 11:17You had a financial goal.
- 11:19And then you like the time has come.
- 11:20Yeah.
- 11:21And then you realize that boy, you need for put certain things in place before you leave.
- 11:24What are those things?
- 11:26I had to like run ads in order to getting students and clients.
- 11:35For Dubai.
- 11:36For Dubai.
- 11:37No, no, no.
- 11:38Well, not for Dubai, because I didn't register as yet.
- 11:40Okay.
- 11:41I didn't register the business here as yet.
- 11:43Right.
- 11:44I will be doing that.
- 11:45Sure.
- 11:46But they know, you know, it's a lot of expenses.
- 11:51Can you have to still be keeping up with your life back in Jamaica and taking care of those expenses?
- 11:59So when it's time to save to come to a whole other country, it's a lot.
- 12:04You mentioned that a part of the bigger dream is to bring students in Jamaica to come abroad and see and get that exposure.
- 12:13I often say that I fell in love with Jamaica when I left.
- 12:18And like a date.
- 12:19Don't give it wrong.
- 12:20I've always loved Jamaica, but like that deep, like feeling the need to talk about Jamaica every single day, feeling the need to let people know something about Jamaica that they didn't know.
- 12:31To broaden the spectrum, to challenge your stereotype.
- 12:34Like I genuinely feel like it's my life's work, right?
- 12:37And I only felt that when I left.
- 12:40And I'm just wondering from your experience, do you want believe that you have seen Jamaica differently having left?
- 12:49And if so, why?
- 12:51And two, is the goal to always stay away?
- 12:55Yeah, I'm okay with staying away.
- 12:59Yeah, man.
- 13:00Because when you're exposed, I was even talking to somebody that's in my workplace.
- 13:05And she's like, oh, she feels tired of Dubai already.
- 13:08She's been here for probably like four years.
- 13:10And she's like, she'd love to go back home.
- 13:12But she came back home.
- 13:13Took to earn what?
- 13:15You know what I mean?
- 13:17Jamaica is a beautiful place.
- 13:19It's warm.
- 13:20The people are.
- 13:22Love the people.
- 13:23Like we're the best.
- 13:25But the earning capacity is just not it.
- 13:30Especially when you have big dreams.
- 13:32No.
- 13:34That's my experience.
- 13:35Sure.
- 13:36That's my experience.
- 13:37And I know people, people would say, you know, like, yeah, people, I want to go to Jamaica, you know, it's true.
- 13:43But how much are them?
- 13:46Yeah, it's just a percentage.
- 13:49And you have a lot of people going to college and in the hospitality industry.
- 13:53But I'm not going to say I never like to say that an industry is over saturated because there's always room where you can do something and thrive at it.
- 14:06But I just feel like Jamaica is beautiful, but ain't nothing wrong.
- 14:10You're not letting go of your roots because you move elsewhere.
- 14:13Like people are going to know that I am Jamaican.
- 14:17I'm going to find somewhere to squeeze my accent in.
- 14:20Okay.
- 14:21Yeah, you're going to know.
- 14:23So it doesn't take away from from from my home.
- 14:28I don't have to be there to, you know, be like ripping.
- 14:32No, I can be out here and I'm spreading.
- 14:35Let's just say I'm the one spreading the good news about Jamaica.
- 14:39I'll do it from afar because I want to earn more.
- 14:43As I said, I was going to do more.
- 14:47Luxurpriced lash artist there.
- 14:51We're.
- 14:54I want to be able to do that in another place where I don't have person saying a lot.
- 15:02Expensively.
- 15:03Right.
- 15:04You know what I mean?
- 15:05So yeah, I just.
- 15:07You speak about wanting children and a family.
- 15:10And I wonder in terms of like location.
- 15:15Has that then come into your mind?
- 15:17Because for example, myself with my girls, I always said by eight,
- 15:21we need to be back in Jamaica.
- 15:22That was much.
- 15:23I know by their eight.
- 15:24Why?
- 15:25Because so I went to preschool in general.
- 15:27It's like living for good.
- 15:30Yeah.
- 15:31And they're five noisy.
- 15:33Girl.
- 15:34I know.
- 15:36But the reason for me, I felt like eight was a good age because.
- 15:41You still have enough of your formative years, right?
- 15:45To have Jamaica kind of shape your character.
- 15:48Okay.
- 15:49And so that was my deadline.
- 15:51The point is I always knew that they were never going to stay in England.
- 15:54Because the values, you know, when you speak about the values that you hold there to you.
- 15:58For me, my values with the UK don't align.
- 16:01And as our children get older, I appreciate that they spend more time away from us.
- 16:06So whilst now we're living in this little bubble that I can make sure that the values that are important to me
- 16:11are being instilled in them, you know, as they get older, as their peers become more important
- 16:16rather than their mother.
- 16:17These are the types of things I think about in terms of what is the wider culture of the space going to impart on my children.
- 16:23And for me, the UK culturally just is very miserable, you know, because of the weather I heard too.
- 16:30Yeah.
- 16:31And I think, you know, it's more than it just being gray outdoors.
- 16:35I think that that has kind of seeped into the culture of complaining.
- 16:38And don't get around, you know, I love a good vent.
- 16:40Yes.
- 16:41You know, I can call you and we can vent about X, Y, Z.
- 16:43But after the venting, we need to then move on.
- 16:46Do something.
- 16:47Make decisions.
- 16:48You know what I mean?
- 16:49Make it.
- 16:50And I feel like they wallow in the venting.
- 16:52Yes.
- 16:53Yes.
- 16:54Without any action or changing anything.
- 16:55And that part, I don't like.
- 16:57I also find it quite anti-competitive in the sense that, you know, I land in New York, I feel like I can take over the world.
- 17:03I don't know how or why, but I feel like there's just an energy that says, yeah, man, you can't take over the world.
- 17:07Yeah.
- 17:08In England, I almost feel as though you are looked down upon for wanting to be the best.
- 17:12Right.
- 17:13Because you must all get to participation middle and we must all be equal.
- 17:16And don't get wrong, you know, I believe that we may come into the world equally.
- 17:21And even that I say with hesitation, because respectfully, the environment of the womb is not equal for many people.
- 17:26Regardless, I'm not saying it's anyone's fault, but I'm saying there are different things that play.
- 17:31If you are a wealthy lady who is able to eat lots of organic foods and have her chef make food for her and she doesn't have stress and all of these things,
- 17:40then your womb is probably in a better condition than my womb.
- 17:43Yeah.
- 17:44You know, it's just what it is.
- 17:45So this idea that it's all equal, I think, is also a fallacy that we keep saying to people that is disingenuous.
- 17:52But aside from that, I just think that Jamaica made me, right?
- 17:57Even, and I wanted to ask you, is there anything about your childhood that has allowed you to be fearless in this way,
- 18:05to be brave, to say, you know, I have these dreams and I'm going to go for them or have you kind of just not fault about it.
- 18:12Because I think sometimes also when you're living, you don't necessarily reflect on the pieces that made it happen.
- 18:21As I said, I was sheltered.
- 18:24Mom was thinking about a couple months ago.
- 18:30My mom used to tell me that I need to home by myself because she used to tell me that I need to home by myself a lot.
- 18:38And I feel like that made me this fearless know because I'm able to do and talk.
- 18:51You know, do what I want to do now.
- 18:55So yeah, I definitely feel like that was because sometimes she used to tell me for shut up, you know, I'm not bashing what I'm just saying.
- 19:07I wasn't able to express myself a lot.
- 19:12Do you think she was trying to protect you?
- 19:15I don't know what it was.
- 19:17I don't know.
- 19:18I'm just remembering those core memories.
- 19:21What I just feel like no, because I wasn't able to say and do a lot.
- 19:28I feel like that's what has made me this fearless individual know.
- 19:37A sheltered life is, yeah, like I definitely feel like she was trying to protect me.
- 19:43Definitely think so.
- 19:44She was trying to protect me from boys.
- 19:47What do you think in terms of their parenting style has really fostered that bond?
- 19:52And I'm selfishly asking for myself, especially the mother daughter bond, because I think that it's either great or terrible.
- 19:59Very few times you meet people and they're like, oh, yeah, me and my mom are so, so like it's neutral.
- 20:04Yeah.
- 20:06I don't know.
- 20:07She's just supportive.
- 20:09Like, they make sure that I had my, the money, you know, to go on the work and travel program.
- 20:17I wanted to go on it from second year.
- 20:19They were like, boy, I'm only the kind of steep.
- 20:23And then they ensure that my sister and I went on it and they said, listen, I'm gonna go make the money.
- 20:30Who long the money for the next year?
- 20:32Okay?
- 20:33You know, so they taught us those things.
- 20:37And I don't know.
- 20:39It's just the support.
- 20:41Like, I don't know where I would be if I didn't have the support.
- 20:48I probably wouldn't even be here.
- 20:51I'm just going to be honest with you.
- 20:53Does your drive and desire to, to realize the dreams that you can visualize come any part from the little girl who's blue debt church?
- 21:09Have you considered if it doesn't work out?
- 21:11Or is that not how you work out?
- 21:12No, no, no, no.
- 21:13Okay, it's off to work out.
- 21:17It has to, there's no, go back home.
- 21:21First of all, I had a yard sale, right?
- 21:25It's serious movements.
- 21:27It wasn't like I did, but they moved.
- 21:30Okay, girl, I'm going to have to buy back every, because when I came here, I had to buy everything over lines, bed, everything to do that back in Jamaica, the ghetto.
- 21:44I ain't doing that no more.
- 21:46I don't want to have to buy back no more stuff, move back.
- 21:50No, it has to work.
- 21:53Why wouldn't it work?
- 21:55Do you have in your mind when you foresee something happening that you want XYZ by this time?
- 22:02I don't, I don't love to do that.
- 22:04I mean, it's because I need to work on my discipline.
- 22:08I'm from however, I want to try to do that.
- 22:12But then I've, I'm not saying that I, there, there's not room for improvement in my life.
- 22:19Maybe if I do do that, it would, it would be better.
- 22:24But I feel like, like, because for example, when I got offered the job, I was like, okay, I'm just going to do this for six months.
- 22:35I can't do that for six months now.
- 22:37The level of stability that I'm going to need in order to start from scratch.
- 22:41No, it has to be longer.
- 22:43And that's why, maybe that's why I don't like to be too stringent on making my plans,
- 22:50because when you really sit on a pencil, all the things that you need to achieve,
- 22:56you kind of need to be a little more realistic.
- 22:59I already have in my mind how long I'm going to give that company.
- 23:03And I'm excited to give them those years, because I, I think why I'm so excited is because I've always had to
- 23:14pinch from the money that I earn in Jamaica and live off of that versus having to get it from somebody else.
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:21Give me.
- 23:22Want it.
- 23:24I don't have nobody giving me handouts back in Jamaica.
- 23:28I don't, I mean, apart from the support from my parents, and I don't ask them for money like that,
- 23:32is when we really need it mask.
- 23:36And so for me to have to actually not say, okay, I have to do a client today to get money,
- 23:42or I have to be, I have to make sure that this week is full like, boy, don't, I don't have to worry about those gymnastics.
- 23:49I feel like that is why I'm so excited to experience this new way of making money,
- 23:57because back then, even though yes, I love being an entrepreneur and not having to depend on, as you said,
- 24:03like somebody else to tell me when to get a vacation, there's still some downsides of being an entrepreneur.
- 24:13You're broke.
- 24:15You're broke.
- 24:17Okay, it's like a serious level of brokenness.
- 24:21But yeah, like you're getting your paycheck every, every month.
- 24:26I want to get ready for you.
- 24:28Yeah.
- 24:29Yeah, man, I'm excited for that.
- 24:33Are there any misconceptions about your life here in Dubai?
- 24:36Yeah, man.
- 24:37People, I'm sure of it.
- 24:38They're like, oh, you're moving.
- 24:40Like, what did I tell people that I'm moving to Dubai?
- 24:43Dubai?
- 24:44Yeah, you have money.
- 24:46I'm coming here to look the money.
- 24:48What do you mean?
- 24:50Yeah, that's definitely a misconception for sure.
- 24:54I'm coming here to be where the money resides more, because money's in Jamaica.
- 24:59There's no doubt about it, right?
- 25:01But I definitely feel like I want the inspiration of,
- 25:06I feel like the architecture here alone inspires me.
- 25:10I feel like I am in this big jungle.
- 25:15And I'm a baby lion.
- 25:18And I'm growing into this big jungle, like just like going through the phases,
- 25:22learning the jungle, learning where to get food from, you know,
- 25:26learning the different parts of the jungle.
- 25:28And I'm enjoying the journey.
- 25:33It's funny that you describe about the architecture, because I was saying to my dad this morning,
- 25:37I feel like for some people being here can go one of two ways, right?
- 25:42You either get deeply inspired by the wealth that you see,
- 25:46or it can feel really daunting about what you don't have.
- 25:49And it sounds that you are the former.
- 25:51You're inspired by seeing what people have and the growth and the potential.
- 25:58I am kind of daunting sometimes, because I'm not used to this level of luck.
- 26:07Because it's a big sacrifice to leave what I'm so used to to come here,
- 26:13to be in a whole new world, not be earning as much question for you.
- 26:19If your life was a postcard, what would the picture look like?
- 26:26That's what the picture would be.
- 26:29And it would probably say a note, have a note that says just do it.
- 26:37Thank you very much.
- 26:39Thank you for having me.
