- 0:16To love letters. Welcome to Love Letters from
- 1:06God. We're going to be reading from
- 1:12several Psalms today as we notice how wonderful God is and
- 1:20how the writer of the Psalms wants us to know that.
- 1:25And then we're also going to be taking a look at some material
- 1:31that with all the rejoicing that we have with respect to how
- 1:36wonderful God is, sometimes we have to suffer ourselves.
- 1:44And we want to take a look at how that suffering might be an
- 1:49asset rather than just a hurt. So that's what we want to kind
- 1:55of look at today. Psalm 94 is where we're going to
- 2:00start. O Lord God, to whom vengeance
- 2:06belongs. O God, to whom vengeance
- 2:12belongs, shine forth, rise up. O judge of the earth, render
- 2:20punishment to the proud Lord. How long will the wicked, how
- 2:27long will the wicked triumph? They utter speech, and they
- 2:32speak insolent things. All the workers of iniquity
- 2:37boast in themselves. They break in peace is your
- 2:43people, O Lord, and they afflict your heritage.
- 2:49They slay the widow and the stranger, and they murder the
- 2:54fatherless. Yet they say the Lord doesn't
- 2:59see, nor does the God of Jacob understand.
- 3:05Understand, you senseless among the people, and you fools, when
- 3:12will you be wise? He who planted the ear, shall he
- 3:18not hear? He who formed the eye, shall he
- 3:24not see? He who instructs the nations,
- 3:30shall he not correct? He who teaches man knowledge,
- 3:36the Lord knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.
- 3:42Blessed is the man whom you instruct, oh Lord, and teach out
- 3:50of your law, that you may give him rest from the days of
- 3:56adversity until the bid is dug for the wicked.
- 4:01For the Lord will not cast off his people, nor will he forsake
- 4:08his inheritance. But judgment will remain to
- 4:13righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.
- 4:21Who will rise up for me against the evildoers?
- 4:25Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
- 4:30Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul would soon have
- 4:36settled in silence. If I say my foot slips, Your
- 4:42mercy, O Lord, will hold me up in the multitude of my
- 4:48anxieties. Within me Your comforts delight
- 4:54my soul. Shall the throne of iniquity,
- 4:59which they devise evil by law, have fellowship with You?
- 5:05They gather together against the life of the righteous, and they
- 5:09condemn innocent blood. But the Lord has been my
- 5:13defense, and my God the rock of my refuge.
- 5:18He has brought on them their own iniquity, and he should cast
- 5:23them off in their own wickedness.
- 5:27The Lord our God shall cut them off.
- 5:31So is Psalm 94. Notice throughout that Psalm how
- 5:38David is. He wonders why the problems, why
- 5:46the issues come up that are so troublesome and terrible.
- 5:53But he knows also that in spite of all the terrible things that
- 5:59are going on in and around him, the Lord's still going to win.
- 6:05He is the winner. Let's go on to Psalm 95.
- 6:12Oh, come, let us sing to the Lord.
- 6:16Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.
- 6:21Let us come before His presence with Thanksgiving.
- 6:26Let us shout joyfully to Him with Psalms.
- 6:31For the Lord is a great God, and the great King above all gods.
- 6:37In His hand are the deep places of the earth.
- 6:42The heights of the hills are His.
- 6:45Also the sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry
- 6:52land. Oh, come, let us worship and bow
- 6:56down. Let us kneel before the Lord our
- 7:00Maker, for He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture
- 7:08and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His
- 7:13voice, do not harden your hearts as in the days of rebellion, as
- 7:21in the day of trial in the wilderness, when your father's
- 7:25tested me. They tried me, though they saw
- 7:29my work for 40 years. I was grieved with that
- 7:35generation and said it is a people who go astray in their
- 7:41hearts and they do not know my ways.
- 7:45So I swore in my wrath. They shall not enter my wrath.
- 7:51And that's Psalm #95 Again, notice how much credit David is
- 8:01giving to God, who is the maker of everything now, when there
- 8:06are so many things around that you and I don't understand.
- 8:12Put our trust and our confidence in the end, because in the long
- 8:16run, He's the winner. And that's what's going to be
- 8:21proven in the end. Let's jump over now to Psalm 97.
- 8:31The Lord reigns. Let the earth rejoice.
- 8:36Let the multitude of Isles be glad.
- 8:41Clouds and darkness around him. Righteousness and justice are
- 8:48the foundation of His throne. A fire goes before him and burns
- 8:54up his enemies around about His lightnings light the world, and
- 9:01the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax at
- 9:08the presence of the Lord. At the presence of the Lord of
- 9:12the whole earth, the heavens declare His righteousness, and
- 9:18all the peoples see His glory. Let all be put to shame who
- 9:25serve carved images, who boast of idols.
- 9:30Worship Him. All ye gods Zion hears and is
- 9:35glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your
- 9:41judgments, O Lord. For for you, Lord, are our Most
- 9:45High above all the earth. You are exalted far above all
- 9:51the gods. You who love the Lord hate evil.
- 9:56He preserves the souls of His Saints.
- 9:59He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
- 10:03Light is shown for the righteous, and gladness for the
- 10:08upright in art. Rejoice in the Lord, you
- 10:12righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy
- 10:17name. And that is Psalm #97 He's given
- 10:23a lot of credit to God here. God is really the one who knows
- 10:29and understands everything. There are a lot of things
- 10:32sometimes that you and I don't understand, but He does.
- 10:37Let's continue with Psalm 98. Oh, sing to the Lord a new song,
- 10:44for He has done marvelous things.
- 10:47His right hand and his holy arm had gained him the victory.
- 10:54The Lord has made known His salvation, His righteousness.
- 10:59He is revealed in the sight of the nations.
- 11:05He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness in the House of
- 11:10Israel. All the ends of the earth have
- 11:13seen the salvation of our God. Shout joyfully to the Lord.
- 11:20All the earth break forth in song.
- 11:24Rejoice and sing praises. Sing to the Lord with the harp,
- 11:29with the harp and the sound of the song with trumpets, in the
- 11:34sound of a horn. Shout joyfully before the Lord
- 11:39the King. Let the sea roar in all its
- 11:42fullness the world and those who dwell in it.
- 11:46Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the hills be joyful together
- 11:53before the Lord. For he is coming to judge the
- 11:57earth, and he judge with righteousness.
- 12:01He should judge the world and the peoples with equity.
- 12:06And that is Psalm #98. So there we've read 4 Psalms
- 12:11today, and each of those psalms is talking about the wonders of
- 12:17the Lord and also mentioning the the problems that come up in
- 12:23life where sometimes we don't understand, but he does.
- 12:30He's still the boss and he knows how to do what he wants to do.
- 12:35I want to read you a little thing here that a fella passed
- 12:40on to me. I don't know much about making
- 12:43wine, but some of you probably do.
- 12:49This guy visited one of the most beautiful wine forms in South
- 12:56Africa a few years ago and one of the best wine makers in South
- 13:03Africa was was working there in that spot and he told us a
- 13:10little bit more about what he was doing.
- 13:14He remarked that they were picking grapes for a specific
- 13:19wine that specific day and he was very happy when he saw these
- 13:29grapes because they were the best that he had seen.
- 13:35But he said that it didn't mean that they would necessarily
- 13:40produce the best wine. Many factors play a role in the
- 13:48process of wine making, and some researchers claim that that we
- 13:54need about 18% rot for a good wine.
- 14:02Immediately I thought about the meaning of trouble and suffering
- 14:07in our lives. Paul says, and David also in the
- 14:14Psalms that we just read, that we should rejoice in the rot of
- 14:20our suffering, because in the cellar of our suffering and
- 14:28affliction we will discover that the best wines of perseverance,
- 14:36character and hope exist. This love letter from God that
- 14:49we tell you about all the time also mentions that we are
- 14:56comforted in our troubles. When we have trouble, we're also
- 15:04able to comfort others who are having trouble too.
- 15:10So trouble is not really a bad thing.
- 15:13When you are discouraged, rejoice.
- 15:19Rejoice because you know that the Lord is still the winner.
- 15:24Shall we pray? Our Father in heaven, we have
- 15:30hard times. Sometimes times are really hard.
- 15:36We just don't know what to do. But we know also that you're the
- 15:42one with the answers. And as you bring these hard
- 15:46times on us, you're developing our own courage, and we praise
- 15:53you for that. We thank you for that, and we're
- 15:57thankful that in that love letter you tell us why, and we
- 16:03appreciate that very much. We ask your blessing upon what
- 16:08we've read today. And we thank you so much for
- 16:11your son who came here and made life really possible for you and
- 16:18me. And we pray this in his name,
- 16:21Amen. And that's it for today.
