- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Back.
- 0:14Speaker 1: What's going on? Everybody is Jeff Mosher, Adam Kaplan and
- 0:18preseason game number one for the Eagles is in the books.
- 0:23You'll be happy to know that they beat the Bengals,
- 0:25just in case you didn't watch until the end. But
- 0:27the win, the score, that doesn't matter. There were a
- 0:30lot of developments on offense, on defense, and we're going
- 0:33to talk about it in this podcast, myself, Adam Kaplan
- 0:36and Adam let's start off with some of the some
- 0:39of the things that really jumped out offensively, because I'm
- 0:44I don't try you know, we don't try to put
- 0:46too much into the preseason, but it is really really
- 0:48hard when you just evaluate sort of individual effort as
- 0:52far as a quarterback throws, rhythm, comfort knowledge, you know,
- 0:57reading progressive, Tanner McKee just continues to check off so
- 1:01many boxes. He's a really interesting prospect at this point, Adam,
- 1:04he is.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Let's go inside what happened so Tanner McKee And while
- 1:09you might call him a pure pocket passer, he definitely
- 1:12is a pocket passer. I always look at stuff that
- 1:15most reporters don't look for. I look at other parts
- 1:17of his game that needed to be improved from year
- 1:20one to two and two to three, and the big
- 1:23thing with him was pocketmobiley, which we saw much better
- 1:25last year. We saw it against the Giants. And then
- 1:29I think it was the first target to Darius Cooper.
- 1:34I think it was actually it might have been the
- 1:36first target where he got rushed. He evaded the rusher
- 1:39and then he moved to his right and threw a struke.
- 1:41He threw to his right. There was a great throat.
- 1:43That's a big time play because on your point, because
- 1:47there's really no blitzing, or if there are, the Eagles
- 1:49blitz a little bit, but yeah, bottom eyes, there's no
- 1:52game planning. So one blitz is that there's a reason
- 1:55for it. They're trying to get something, they're trying to
- 1:57do something with their backups and try some stuff. Ever
- 2:00the case may be. But McKay was just amazing. What
- 2:05else could you say? And you have to isolate throws
- 2:07because again the pressure is wasn't really there. Because the
- 2:13thing that surprised me is man, their offensive line. And
- 2:15I know the Bengals didn't have Trey Henrickson. I get
- 2:18that we have to mention that it's our job, but man,
- 2:20this offensive line with all backups other than Tyler Steen,
- 2:23who started, by the way, and they started back then
- 2:27in the one preseason. He was the only started to
- 2:29play on offense last preseason. But man, the other part
- 2:34about this and McKee was awesome. We'll get more to
- 2:35hit him in a minute. But the offensive line was phenomenal.
- 2:38That was surprising to me.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Oh, I haven't ridden. I wrote about it last night
- 2:41for Philly Voice, and I'm gonna we're gonna talk about
- 2:43it in this pod. There were a couple of things
- 2:45that really jumped out of me that we're gonna get
- 2:47specific on with the old line. I was really impressed
- 2:49with the offensive line, especially since they were all backups
- 2:52except for Steam. But to get it back to your
- 2:55point on McKee, even before the completion to Cooper, he
- 3:00had a play. Now, it's just a footnote now and
- 3:03it was an incompletion, but I thought it was really good.
- 3:05He was flushed to his right and it was a
- 3:08third down, and he kept running to his right, running
- 3:10to his right, getting close to the sideline, kept his
- 3:12eyes downfield, and he released a really nice pass to
- 3:15Grant Calkatara that honestly should have been caught at first,
- 3:19it looked like Calcatar had to die for it, but
- 3:21the replay showed he just only he had to do
- 3:23his reach and then he went to his knees after
- 3:26reaching and not catching the ball. If he catches that ball,
- 3:29that's a first down. It's a nice play, but you're
- 3:32probably talking about Calcatara making a nice catch, but forgetting
- 3:35the fact that McKee sensed the rush, got to his right,
- 3:39kept his eyes down the field and made a real
- 3:41laser of a throw while his momentum was taking him
- 3:44toward the sideline.
- 3:45Speaker 2: It was a great throw. And the thing about McKee
- 3:47was you mentioned it in passing, is his ability in
- 3:50maintownce downfield focus. So what happened was if you watch
- 3:53really closely, he would scam because he had time. We
- 3:57have to mention that. But he threw it to the
- 3:59right with juice when he needed to, and he threw
- 4:04some into traffic, which was interesting. He had a couple wherewhow,
- 4:06I was like he he's willing to make that throw.
- 4:08That was big time and you have to understand, like sure,
- 4:12Trey Hendrickson didn't play, but Logan Wilson played. He's a starter.
- 4:16Both starting safety's Juno Stone and Battle played. Now Cam
- 4:20Taylor Britt didn't play. It was the starting corner. We
- 4:24understand that we mentioned Hendrickson bj Hills a starting dtackle,
- 4:27but they had at least seven starters in the lineup
- 4:29and the key ripped them apart. Like you could say
- 4:31all you want about preseason, I understand that, but the
- 4:34bottom line is he made big time throws playing with
- 4:37backups at the skill position. So that was enormous performance
- 4:41by the kid. And I'll tell you what after the season,
- 4:44heading into March of twenty twenty six, if they want
- 4:47to trade him, the better tape they get you use
- 4:50this as a guide. My god, I don't know what
- 4:52I mean. You saw the Giant game for that one half.
- 4:54This is pretty damn good.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You know what I've been thinking since the end of
- 4:58the game. I have no idea idea what the ceiling
- 5:01for this kid is. But I feel like at this
- 5:04point I can tell you the floor is that he's
- 5:05a good backup quarterback in the NFL. He can play
- 5:08in the NFL. He can come in and I think
- 5:11he can come in and win you games if your
- 5:13starter gets hurt. And at this point, if a team
- 5:17calls up Hollie Roseman and says, I want to give
- 5:19a blank for Tanner McKee. I don't know what that
- 5:23blank is because they may really have something. And just
- 5:26in case, you always want to have that kind of commodity. Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, And and McKee is in year three of a
- 5:32four year deal. He's clearly the backup. We as we
- 5:36talked about March, there would be no competition for it.
- 5:38No matter what was out there was all wrong, there
- 5:40was never going to be a competition for it. The
- 5:41kid has got it. I give Eagles credit. You know,
- 5:44it's college numbers. You know, people want to know, and
- 5:46it's a it's a great question. It just came up
- 5:48in our and our Patreon. We did a really cool
- 5:52and we had a huge crowd. We did a first
- 5:54time we've ever done this. We did a live video
- 5:57chat with our Patreon Tier three members at halftime and
- 6:01it was packed. And you know, I was asked about
- 6:04it again. Why wasn't he drafted higher? His college numbers
- 6:07weren't great, he was a little bit older.
- 6:11Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:11Speaker 2: The Mormon mission is uh Milata calls him the Mormon
- 6:14missile missile right, So but man, uh pocket passer now
- 6:19now I know the knock with him, did really question
- 6:22the movement? I don't know what you know. I wish
- 6:25the reporters were maybe if you go or Andrew, I
- 6:28could ask him with a pocket mobility because I remember
- 6:31asking Nate Sudfeld. Is because Nate Sudfeld's improved his his
- 6:37movement over a year or two and he worked on it.
- 6:39So I wonder if McKee worked on it, because my god,
- 6:41he made a big jump in mobility.
- 6:43Speaker 1: That's a great, great point. I'll try to see if
- 6:46I can poke around on that. And then you know
- 6:48how the access has been so it's it's rough, but
- 6:51uh yeah, some good stuff from there. Let's let's go
- 6:53to this offensive line because there was one play in
- 6:56particular that I'm sure everybody saw but like, but if
- 6:59you really slow it down and watch it on tape,
- 7:01it's a thing of beauty. And that's the Will Shipley
- 7:03thirty eight yard run inside zone right side, which Adam,
- 7:08like you know, for all the tape that we watch
- 7:09of the starting offensive line, there are often times where
- 7:13whether it's Saquon or somebody else where, you say, yes,
- 7:16good run, but the canyon of a hole was there
- 7:20because of the great details and fundamentals of blocking. And
- 7:24if you look at that thirty eight yard run, I've
- 7:26gone through it on tape a thousand times. First of all,
- 7:29excellent seal block on the edge by Matt Pryor against
- 7:32Miles Murphy, a first round pick of the Bengals. He
- 7:35doesn't play like a first round pick, but it was
- 7:37a first round pick. The linebacker is I wouldn't sure
- 7:40which linebacker was, but he's shooting the gap and Steen
- 7:43does a great job of turning his body toward the
- 7:47linebacker trying to cut inside, shielding him off. And then
- 7:50Kendall Man, You've seen Jason Kelsey do it. You've seen
- 7:54Cam Jurgens do it. He's in the second level blocking
- 7:57up the weak side linebacker. So with all three guys
- 8:00sealed and cleared out, Will Shipley is able to just
- 8:03put the jets on. I swear that looked like a
- 8:05first team execution. Now everybody was fundamentally sound. It was great.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I thought he's going to score.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Shipley.
- 8:12Speaker 2: You know the big thing here, we do want to match.
- 8:14You mentioned Drew Kendall. This is a big game for
- 8:17him because you're not the biggest guy in the world.
- 8:20There are questions about could he be a really quality
- 8:24backup in the NFL. This is a great sign. I
- 8:27know it's only one game, totally understand that, but you
- 8:30don't want to get carried away. But this is really good.
- 8:32And with Brett Toath playing left guard, Matt Pryor, who
- 8:36we thought would be the backup right tackle, I'm sure
- 8:37he will be and Lamb will be. Lamb will be left.
- 8:40Now he could play both sides, but it probably who's
- 8:44them because you know Stout doesn't like the move guys,
- 8:45So Lamb's a back up left for now prior to
- 8:48back up right. I don't know about the backup left
- 8:50guard of Brett Toaf. We'll have to see if that continues.
- 8:53To see there's some answers we're not going to have, right,
- 8:55but I was blown away by the protection. Oh, just
- 8:58a couple more notes here before we I want to
- 9:00mention a couple more notes on quarterback. This won't take long. Yeah,
- 9:03I like the way like McKee didn't have a lot
- 9:05of seven step drops. It's mostly three and five EU.
- 9:07He had a couple one and a half step drops.
- 9:09We just got out he got rid of it, and
- 9:11then I'll tell you what DTR. I know, training camp
- 9:13has gonna be great for him, but man, he made
- 9:16a couple of throws. Who made one beautiful thrown of
- 9:18traffic was like, wow, he fired that thing in there,
- 9:20m M. And then there was a there was the
- 9:22there was one drop by Johnny Wilson. I know is
- 9:25Russ Tucker talked about it and I would agree, like
- 9:27that's one probably Wilson should have had. But overall, I
- 9:31know it doesn't mean much, but I just want to
- 9:33mention that because DTR can he can't spin the ball,
- 9:35he can throw it.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no doubt about it. And that actually brings
- 9:39up a good note real quick that this was the
- 9:42first time I can remember where guys who are in
- 9:44in the first quarter were still in in the fourth quarter.
- 9:48And some of that is depth, you know, wide receiver,
- 9:50they're really hurting. There were about three guys right now
- 9:52with with Marshall out and Brown and Smith. But on
- 9:56the last pass rush of the game, which was a
- 10:00big third down stop on against Spencer Ridder, which Boyry
- 10:06doesn't Ty Robinson We'll get to the defense in a second,
- 10:09but Ty Robinson and Gabe Hall were in and executed
- 10:13a stunt to pressure Ridder, and I'm like, wow, you
- 10:17know this is Vick saying my guys need reps. And
- 10:19how often do you see guys like that who started
- 10:22in the first quarter playing in the fourth quarter. That's
- 10:24pretty amazing. I thought that was only a Dariynard thing,
- 10:27but apparently now it's that's funny.
- 10:30Speaker 2: The snapcounts were not available because I was curious about
- 10:32how many snaps those guys got. But get just finishing off.
- 10:37You know, we talked, You talked about ship A the
- 10:38a J don't look really good. By the way, we
- 10:40got another answer because you know what, here's the thing
- 10:41with running backs. Yep, you and I have covered this
- 10:44business a couple of decades here running backs because there's
- 10:47no tackling to the ground, wearing pads. Okay, that's nice.
- 10:50It's better than not wearing pads for evaluation. But they're
- 10:53not getting hit and they're not getting tackled to the ground,
- 10:56so you don't have that fear if you're a running
- 10:58back that you're gonna get hit, but you do in
- 11:01the game. And Shipley the explosion, now the one issue
- 11:05that I have and I knew this could be a problem,
- 11:07and this is something just to watch depending on what
- 11:09they do in the regular season. You inside the five,
- 11:12he had I think three cracks for it, and then
- 11:14they they obviously they got it in with the key
- 11:16on the push play, but you know that's where the
- 11:19lower body strength and the questions about that, that's where
- 11:23I would have liked them to have taken Chipley out
- 11:25and the game a try. I get that, but I
- 11:27would have liked to have seen Dylan come in and
- 11:28let him power throw.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah. I would actually have liked to have seen Ben
- 11:31van sumern with some other dives. Interesting that Ben van
- 11:35Sumerin did not play a single offensive snap, which I
- 11:41know that sounds crazy, but no, only special teams. Okay,
- 11:45it fuels my theory that they're hiding. I think they
- 11:49want to use this full back a little bit creatively
- 11:51and they're not trying to show that in the preseason.
- 11:53That could be totally wrong. It's just a haunch, but
- 11:56we'll see. But yeah, but it was a testament o
- 11:59to the interior offensive line. That was a nice push
- 12:01that they pulled off. That usually with the backup quarterback,
- 12:04the Eagles average five point eight yards per carry in
- 12:06the first half at him. So now some of that
- 12:09was wided by the Shipley run, but again that run
- 12:11was paved by a really good blocking effort. So I
- 12:14have no problem with giving the offensive line a ton
- 12:17of credit for that number in the first half. And
- 12:20I think that the line is now starting to come
- 12:22into shape for us. I mean, we know the starting five.
- 12:25Stein's gonna play right guard at this point. I can't
- 12:28see Matt pryor not making it unless he, you know,
- 12:30just gets hurt or fall.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He's always going to I know, but I was.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I was sort of skeptical because he didn't play really well.
- 12:37A really good story I'm gonna try to pursue is
- 12:39why he's become a better lineman after leaving the Eagles
- 12:43and coming back than when he was here. But he's
- 12:45definitely there. Lamb's definitely there. So that's seven. There's one guy,
- 12:50Kendall is a Hinton played well. He had a he
- 12:54got confused on a on a stunt on his first
- 12:57snap and that's the only sack that McKee took in
- 13:00the first half. But other than that, I think he
- 13:02played well. He'll make it. So that's eight right there.
- 13:05Right five.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Kenyan Green got hurt late in the game, so I
- 13:08don't even know what his status is.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah, right now, I can only right now, I think
- 13:11they've got nine and if they keep attempt it's because
- 13:14it's like Cameron Williams or Williams.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he's a total project.
- 13:17Speaker 1: But now I don't think played. I don't. I watched him.
- 13:21He snapped the ball, okay, but they went under center
- 13:23a lot in the second half, and then he also
- 13:25allowed some some run pressure, like he just did not
- 13:28look like the starting quote unquote starters who were really
- 13:32a second teamers.
- 13:33Speaker 2: So I hear you, let's move to receiver, So Johnny Wilson,
- 13:37let's give him his effort because one of the knots
- 13:39on him. And I saw this, So I've talked about
- 13:42this play before where I was last week, and I
- 13:43think the pass it was either from a cord or
- 13:46McKee in practice in the left side of the end zone,
- 13:49and he just didn't make the effort. The ball should
- 13:51have been deflected, yep, And and it was over Mac mcwon.
- 13:54He's Mac McWilliams is under five to eleven and Wilson
- 13:58is how taalty's six to seven. Yeah, okay, so he's
- 14:02got eight inchest on the guy. I mean, you got
- 14:03you gotta go after it now he did in this
- 14:05game that that was a good He did a good job. Man.
- 14:08Good to see his effort. They need this from him.
- 14:10He can't just be a guy good block, you know.
- 14:12Syrianni loves to point that out, but everybody knew that already.
- 14:16But that's the kind of thing against the Bengals. That
- 14:18and he started the game, by the way, nice smith.
- 14:20They started eleven personnel was Johnny Wilson a nice smith.
- 14:23Nice Smith, but a great punt return while I was phenomenal. Yeah,
- 14:26and Dotson, Dotson, you have showed up so but good
- 14:29for Johnny Wilson. We've always listened. Our job is to
- 14:31tell you the truth. We've been very critical of Wilson
- 14:35because they hadn't performed other than block. But this is
- 14:38a good sign for him to make the team for sure.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And so I don't remember the last practice
- 14:44you were at for the Ears, but I was at
- 14:47the last two and I think three of the last four.
- 14:49And I will tell you after those first three days
- 14:52where we were kind of knocking Johnny for not using
- 14:54his body, things have turned around. And not only that,
- 14:57he I felt like over the last two practices, you
- 15:00started to see him like you saw him in the game.
- 15:03They started to movement more into the slot and have
- 15:06him running certain kind of routes that took advantage of
- 15:09either his size or got him on a break in
- 15:11his zone, and he started to catch the ball really well,
- 15:14like seeing it into the hands. And I talked to
- 15:16him after the game. I mean, he definitely he definitely
- 15:19talked about playing the slot here, which it's either the
- 15:22there are times he's a slot or times he's just
- 15:24tight to the line of scrimmage that we talk about
- 15:26the reduced splits, but that seems to be an area
- 15:30where Kevin Bittullo has been able to tap into him
- 15:32because on the outside he's not a natural separator. You
- 15:36can only really use your your height, but on the inside,
- 15:39against certain coverages you can. He's a nice, big, easy target.
- 15:43And I think the thing that really stood out in
- 15:45the game was the slot fade route or the slot
- 15:48go where you could just throw it up on a
- 15:50smaller defender, and he was able to make those over
- 15:53the shoulder grabs. So we did it's hush, that'll be good.
- 15:55I mean, in the grand schemeing thing, what are we
- 15:57talking about he's going to be fourth or fifth in
- 15:59the pecking order exactly.
- 16:00Speaker 2: But you know, but you move up if started. That's
- 16:02the point of this. If the starter gets hurt, you're
- 16:05moving up. And you got it, you got if you
- 16:06become the three. Yep, that's important now, by the way,
- 16:10But the start of the game. Other than McKee Darius Cooper,
- 16:13we over the last week from why I understand he's
- 16:17taken a jail like he'd been. He'd flashed a little
- 16:19bit with the threes and you never know really how
- 16:21because there's really very little contact. You don't you have
- 16:23to put in proper context. Last week has really come on.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yep.
- 16:27Speaker 2: He it's funny because you talk about it, Wilson, it's
- 16:30not a natural separator. Watch Cooper separate m H and
- 16:36they he played the Z. I just look at my
- 16:38notes here played a little bit the Z, a little
- 16:39bit of the X. They moved him. He caught the
- 16:42balls to the right side, left side. He was phenomenal,
- 16:44right to score the touchdown, super strong. He's under six
- 16:48feet but he's really built. Well, this dude's the baller
- 16:51from Charlton State. I mean, this is see one thing
- 16:54I do want to mention before we move on here,
- 16:56before we move on to maybe one word two quick
- 16:58notes on officefore you go to defense. Datson's free agent
- 17:02after the season. They don't know who the future three
- 17:04four five is after the so Cooper will not put
- 17:08him on the roster. Yet he sure looks like he
- 17:09should be. And then unfortunately, uh the big receiver got hurt,
- 17:15uh Lojah Cooks and first half didn't look good. He
- 17:18was he was carted off. Yeah, so there's there's gonna
- 17:21be one and Tars Marshall didn't play Cooper not only
- 17:25just have a chance to be on the roster. But
- 17:29this kid's interesting. Uh. I don't want to go overboard,
- 17:32but the effort he's he's been really steady in training
- 17:35camp and now this is this is kind of like
- 17:38his showcase. And man did he show up.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah. I was trying to do the numbers, like you know,
- 17:44you know that they've got the top three receivers. It
- 17:46looks like Wilson and Ia Smith are performing well. So
- 17:49that's five. I don't know how unless they keep an
- 17:52extra guy. And I don't know what they want to
- 17:53do with Avery Williams. If Avery Williams makes it it's
- 17:56because Nick Sirianni like banged his fist on the table
- 17:58because he doesn't really he hasn't deserved it. But if
- 18:02he keeps making plays, No, I don't know. I don't
- 18:05want to say, it might be tough to waive him
- 18:06because wide receivers are a dime a dozen, but you
- 18:09have to be you're right. He's been very impressive. He's
- 18:12playing above his pedigree. And I will say this, he
- 18:15ran I charted this down. He had a first team
- 18:18rep in practice the other day. Again, there's short a
- 18:21few receivers, but that doesn't mean that he has to
- 18:24get a rep. But he got a rep and then
- 18:26he was running with a second team and quite a
- 18:28couple of touchdowns. So he's clearly making the most of
- 18:31his opportunities and someone to watch here over the next
- 18:33few weeks.
- 18:34Speaker 2: He attacks the football man that that is so obvious,
- 18:38and he he is what you call urgency. That's a
- 18:41scouting term. He has extreme urgency. I mean, this dude
- 18:45brings it. It's a great story. Now here's the thing though,
- 18:48it's now on tape thirty one. Other teams have seen
- 18:50this now, so the secrets out.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yep.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Now we'll see now if he does well in game two,
- 18:55in game three, it'd be hard to cut him and
- 18:58try to seek him through because the worst think you
- 19:00could do is a guy like this who balls out
- 19:02and it looks to be real if you try to
- 19:04stick me through the practice on and it gets claimed.
- 19:05Because that's what keeps gms up at night, because I
- 19:08remember Joe Banner told me that if you're willing to
- 19:10put a guy through waivers, you're willing to lose a player,
- 19:13and you should You shouldn't have. You should be saying
- 19:14that to yourself. Oh, you know what we'll live with
- 19:16if someone claims him, right, you don't want to have
- 19:19that feeling, right by.
- 19:20Speaker 1: The way, last plan on offense, well, two quick things. One,
- 19:23I charted the thirty snaps in the first half of
- 19:25eleven and twelve personnel and they played about fifty seven
- 19:29eleven personnel, so forty three percent. Well, it's still pretty
- 19:31heavy twelve so for a percentage there, so obviously Patulo
- 19:36carrying over what they did well from last year. There
- 19:39was some motion. I saw some jet motion. It wasn't
- 19:41a lot. I've seen more motion in camp than I
- 19:44saw in the game, but there was some motion added
- 19:46to the offense. I wanted to make note of that.
- 19:48And then just an overarching point is that, you know,
- 19:51how often do we say in preseason games, it's really
- 19:53tough to evaluate this QB or this or that because
- 19:56it's the backups. But when you have an organization like
- 19:59the Eagles, Ravens or others that really invest in the
- 20:02offensive line top to bottom, it really allows you to
- 20:05help helps you evaluate your quarterback and then your passing
- 20:08game and then your running game a little bit better
- 20:11because you're not just sitting there saying, oh, we got
- 20:12a bunch of like you know, bottom of the roster
- 20:15type players. I mean, some of these backup linemen could
- 20:17probably be competing for starting jobs elsewhere, but it really
- 20:21shows out in the preseason. How how that helps the
- 20:24evaluation process? All right? Defense, Yeah, yeah, defense, listen. I'm
- 20:30not gonna make too much of Killey Ringo. He was
- 20:32he wasn't in a great position on that back shoulder
- 20:35catch to to uh by Jamar Chase from from Borrow,
- 20:38but he's also going up against Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase.
- 20:41I know that it sticks out like a sore thumb,
- 20:43but like better corners than Khilley Ringo have given up
- 20:46that same route.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Well, understand he's competing for starting job. So you'd be
- 20:50going against Joe Burrow if they were playing the Bengals
- 20:52sure season, so you got to show up. He had
- 20:55two really bad plays. The one where you're some press position,
- 20:59he he just gave access to to Chase and he
- 21:04that's a player talking about I think without looking that one.
- 21:06Speaker 1: I don't know if I can't remember, but I mean,
- 21:08he didn't tracking the ball, but that was bad.
- 21:12Speaker 2: He got harder. Ross Tucker talked about it when he
- 21:15was playing off coverage, then the man coverage one. It
- 21:18just he didn't get a hand within five yards because
- 21:20you have the five yard shuck and he just didn't
- 21:22do it right. And then as you said, he didn't
- 21:25play the ball. Well that that that's look if you
- 21:27if you were give the positive of Ringo and the negatives,
- 21:30the negatives are fairly obvious. He had the same issue
- 21:32in college with ball tracking. He's got the length, he's
- 21:35got the speed. Kid works hard. From what we understand,
- 21:38it's just it's got to be better. Dowry Jackson's got
- 21:40to be better, and they've they've yes, they're playing against
- 21:44Joe Burrow. But guys, they're they're competing for they're competing
- 21:47to be starters. And the Bengals have the first team
- 21:50of runs out there, so I know, look, it is
- 21:52what it is. They have to be better. And you know,
- 21:55next week, uh, in fact, Saturdays, the first practice. Uh,
- 21:59we'll get a look at judge Krane Bennett and see
- 22:01if they can move them up quickly. We'll see what
- 22:03they do.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Yeah. From a tackling standpoint, I didn't think it was great.
- 22:07At the interior level. I thought Monden struggled a little bit.
- 22:11He got bowled over on that touchdown at the goal
- 22:13line by the tight end. He got stiff armed by
- 22:16Chase Brown at one point. By the way, how about
- 22:19one twin brother tackling the other Sidney.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Brou was crazy. That was crazy. A couple of things
- 22:24Trotter and Manden started. Now, Campbell came in the penalty,
- 22:27by the way, he could have been flaged twice legal
- 22:29hands to the face, and then he grabbed the running
- 22:31on those other hand, he grabbed the running backs face
- 22:33fask yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yeah. And by the way, he was also he didn't
- 22:36get off his block well on that too, which is
- 22:38why he had to get his hands on the face.
- 22:40But I mean that's just one play. Athleticism, The athleticism
- 22:43showed up because you remember the play where Andre Sam
- 22:46hit the receiver, the ball went in the air and
- 22:48it was almost picked off. That was Campbell twenty yards
- 22:51down the field diving to try to pick off the
- 22:54ball before it hit the ground.
- 22:56Speaker 2: So you could see the Oh yeah, he was a
- 22:57great effort. That was great effort.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you could see the athleticism. But he needs
- 23:01some fine tuning. Unfortunately. I just don't think Manden or
- 23:04even Trotter Junior. They also looked a little bit of
- 23:06a step slow.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Well, now the question would be did the front clean
- 23:10them off. Gabe Hall and Ty Robinson started in the
- 23:15interior and looks he can move. Now, he can move
- 23:19and oce Luri he's got to be better. Man. They're
- 23:22into him because they liked his tape a lot, and
- 23:24that's why they brought him in. Greco select the tape.
- 23:27He hadn't shown up yet. Man started the game.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought the interior guys did better than the
- 23:33edge guys. You're right, did show up a little bit,
- 23:36but in general, there was not a lot of edge pressure.
- 23:38I thought Robinson and Hall played well when they were
- 23:41in there, played violently. I also wanted to make the
- 23:44point that the Bengals those big plays that they got
- 23:47came out of a lot of twelve personnel for them.
- 23:49I don't know how much we're gonna do that during
- 23:50the season, but it's really hard when you're in your
- 23:52five man front and your backup nose is that Joe Davis,
- 23:56a guy they signed.
- 23:56Speaker 2: In the middle, Joe Evans.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Sorry. Yeah, So you're not gonna get a lot of
- 24:01great pass rush when you're five on seven and one
- 24:03of your five is Joe Evans. He's not He's a
- 24:06three hundred and forty pound guy.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Oh he was a backup No, yeah, he was a
- 24:09backup nose. Wow.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Yeah he was in early because he was he was
- 24:13there starting zero technique in the five man front with
- 24:16no Jordan Davis out there, right.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So yeah he signed training Wow.
- 24:19Speaker 1: He just that's what you're just never gonna see. You're
- 24:22not seeing that in the regular season. So I'm not
- 24:24trying to make too much of the Bengals striking a
- 24:26few big plays. When the Bengals went to eleven vic
- 24:31did you mentioned this vict dialed up some blitzes and
- 24:33I thought there were some pretty good ones and you
- 24:35saw the athleticism of the front come through and they
- 24:37were able to get some pressure there.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Yes, So with with Thomas Booker traded he was the
- 24:42backup nose and Jordan Davis didn't play. They have to
- 24:46figure that who that's guy's cape. Paul's not a nose.
- 24:49And Robinson if you shade him a certain way, you can.
- 24:52If someone in scouting told me, you could get away
- 24:54with it. But he's really not a nose. He's a
- 24:55tweeener body type. Not about body type is enough to
- 24:59do about how you weigh. It's your frame, leverage, right, leverage, hand,
- 25:03arm length. We have to educate people because people people
- 25:06like to jump in us. Oh wait a minute, he
- 25:08put weight on. That's fine, but that's not It doesn't
- 25:10make his arms any longer, right, you know, That's that's
- 25:14the problem that But he's got great energy, man, he
- 25:17ty Robbinson's a fascinating talent. He's clubs couldn't figure out
- 25:21what he was at the next level. That's why he
- 25:23dropped to the fourth round. But man, he brings energy
- 25:25and he's he's gonna be a good player.
- 25:26Speaker 1: He is gonna be good. I was wondering if Byron
- 25:29Young might be went healthy a backup nose, and he's
- 25:31a little closer to he's got the long arms. I
- 25:34thought that might help him at that position.
- 25:36Speaker 2: But Young didn't play. Yeah he was hurt.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yeah he was hurt. He didn't play. So yeah, there's
- 25:41that the corner, you know. Sydney Brown looked okay. I
- 25:43think there were a couple of times I thought he
- 25:45was either out of place for over pursuing, which is
- 25:48sort of his his forte, so he just has to
- 25:52clean that up. But nothing egregious I thought was bad.
- 25:55I just I just would have liked to have seen
- 25:57a little more more pass Russia from the edges.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I agree, totally a great and then secondary wise, they
- 26:04started they starting Nickel McWilliams was that he so he
- 26:07was healthy enough to play. He was the nickel ringo.
- 26:08Jackson Brown and Tristan McCollums started at safety. So yeah, look,
- 26:16it's hard because obviously, if you're going against Joe Burrow
- 26:18in a real game, you're not playing your backups. But uh,
- 26:21as I was talking about in our at Patreon Chattelman,
- 26:24I think it was Tuesday, Wednesday. I said, guys, it's
- 26:26going to be it's going to look ugly. First quarter.
- 26:28The Begles actually covered the first the first quarter spread.
- 26:32They were actually a six point favorite because the everyone
- 26:35knew that he was going to play mostly backups, if
- 26:36not all backups. But it wasn't all that bad. The effort.
- 26:41The effort was fine. They're just you. It's just it
- 26:43was a tough matchup. They have a lot more to learn,
- 26:45you know that Mandon, They have a lot more to
- 26:47learn about him. Trot you and your mind and started
- 26:49at at backer. But you know, overall, uh, they won
- 26:54the game. The offense was incredible.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Yep.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Wow, it was kind of one of those I know it,
- 26:59as you said to start the show. I know it's preseason, but.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, your punter kicked a pat, so you learned
- 27:05that he can do thaticker gets hurt.
- 27:07Speaker 2: So there's nice if that pump returns phenomenal, he really
- 27:10should have got he he he beat he juked that
- 27:12long dude. Remember this guy. This guy had over eighty
- 27:15punk returns in college.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yeah he was a good punt returner. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 27:20so that's good, good stuff. And then obviously, the Eagles
- 27:22will be off on uh what, Friday, and they'll reconvene
- 27:25Saturday and we'll get back at it. So that is it.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but real quick. Next week they got two joint
- 27:31practice against Cleveland. Oh that's right, Wednesday and Thursday, and
- 27:35then they play one o'clock Easter yes, a Saturday, the
- 27:38dreaded one o'clock Eastern game on Saturday.
- 27:40Speaker 1: No, I like it because it's undone and early and
- 27:42I don't get home after midnight, so that's good.
- 27:44Speaker 2: And Sunday night night practice of the link, correct.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Yes, I practice, I think. All right? All right man,
- 27:52good stuff, and that's gonna do it for this episode
- 27:54of Inside the Birds, the leading podcast and the Eagles
- 27:57Intel and is always we thank you for flying with
- 27:59us Inside the Birds
