- Micaiah: We are back, or I am back. It's mostly college football. Another weekend that took a bunch of ranked teams down, I believe seven in total. Couple had to go to overtime to survive. Welcome to Mostly College Football. I'm Captain Bourne. Thank you for being here. and make sure we share with our family and friends this episode. Michigan didn't hold up their end of the bargain. But we will start with the 330 time slot as the highest ranked team was upset in not number one that was Miami but the highest ranked Team that was upset, and that's the words in order that I was looking for the BYU Cougars fall in overtime 39-31 to the UCF Knights. I thought that this was a trap game. I hope I thought that a whole there were a whole bunch of trap games yesterday, and this would be one, and I was correct. So BYU goes to Orlando, goes down in overtime in a very kind of even game. UCF did. Pretty much what they wanted offensively, especially in the second quarter. They scored 17 points in the second quarter, seven in the third, and then they didn't score again until overtime. they ran for 170 yards on the ground, 4.1 yards a carry. BYU didn't they had one turnover. Baerbach Meyer threw one interception, but other than that, it was a Generally clean game and even game across the board. It's just UCF made more plays and was able to move the ball on the ground a little easier against BYU. And that's pretty much the difference. So the number two ranked team in the nation, they go down after a big win last week. And the number 11 team in the nation goes down after a big win last week on the road. The the Tennessee Volunteers go. Go to Columbia, South Carolina. And they started really slow. 14-0 right out of the gate for South Carolina. Opening drive, touchdown, three and out. Punt by Tennessee. Two plays 58 yards later. It is 14-0 in the blink of an eye. And then Tennessee goes on an 18-play, 75, 9-minute drive to get on the board, and it's Seven to fourteen. Then South Carolina throws an interception. Tennessee scores a touchdown. The second quarter was wild. South Carolina field goal, Tennessee touchdown. And so at the end of the half, after a 14-0 run by South Carolina, Tennessee does their own 14-0 run. And it is now 21-17 after half. Then you go back and forth in the fourth quarter, or in the third quarter, excuse me, where it's a hold with just a bunch of punts. And then the fourth quarter comes alive a little bit more. Field goal by Tennessee, punt by South Carolina, turnover on downs by Tennessee, South Carolina touchdown on an amazing effort by Lenore Sellers. And then Tennessee, with a game tied at 24, has the ball and is driving. And Dylan Stewart, who was suspended earlier this year, the edge rusher for South Carolina, comes through, forces a strip-sack fumble. South Carolina gets the ball. Goes four plays, four yards, and kicks a game-winning field goal to take down number 11, Tennessee. And now the SEC is wide open. Now the Big 12 is wide open because the number eight team in the country went on the road, and that was the Texas Tech Red Raiders. They went to Sid Cincinnati and Nippert Stadium and they got their butts handed. To them. Cincinnati did whatever they wanted on the ground. They ran for 255 yards, 6.4 yards of carry. JC French, the quarterback, even threw two interceptions and only had a QBR of 45, but they did whatever they wanted on the ground. And this was after a very slow first quarter. Like they only had, I believe, like 30 rushing yards in the first quarter in Cincinnati. And then they flipped a switch and scored. 21 points in the second quarter, seven in the third, six in the fourth, and they just had a stranglehold on this game from halftime on because they could just run the ball so effectively yesterday against the Texas Tech Red Raiders defense that had not allowed a rushing touchdown all year, that was very stout against the run. And Cincinnati said, Nope, take this, and just ran it. down their throats four four quarters. That was a lot of fours in one sentence. So I do apologize to to everyone who does not like that. Other news in the Big 12 in the ranked on rank violence that we had, Houston went into Utah, Utah seven and Because Devin Dampier ran wild. 15 carries, 150 yards. That's 10 yards a carry and two touchdowns. He threw two interceptions on the back end, but Houston's high efficiency offense really was limited last night by that Utah defense. they still got their yardage, but they did they were unable to convert that into scoring opportunities. And then Utah. 14 points in the fourth quarter, kind of took over the game in that fourth quarter. Other than that, it it was very, very even for Utah and Houston last night. I did not stay up. I watched the highlights this morning, but it two kind of very even games, but Devin Dampier just took over in the second half and especially the fourth quarter for for the Utes. Also a another team in Texas. This time they hosted, and that would be the Texas Longhorns. They hosted the Old Miss Rebels. They forced Trinidad Chamlis to do something that I have not seen him do in quite some time, and that was throw three interceptions last night. Arch Manning was on fire, and the Texas offense was on fire in the first half. They their drive charts went field goal, interception, punt, touchdown. That was the first quarter. Then in the second quarter, they went touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. punt and end of half. They really rocked and rolled and Arch Manning looked pretty good in the first half, but then same old Texas. And I'm sure Texas fans were expecting this because then in the second quarter they go fumble, scoop and score for old old miss. So it's it was 24 to three at halftime. Now it's 10 to 24. Then Texas went punt, punt, punt all in the third quarter. Fourth quarter, Interception. So now we're getting the boo birds out. And then they go six play, 80 yards on the ground, all on the ground. Field goal. And then the game ends on a on an interception in the end zone. Old Miss had a shot. Old Miss recovered an onside kick late in the game. Trinidad Chambless kind of came up came alive in that fourth quarter. Old Miss in the fourth quarter went touchdown, punt, missed field goal, field goal, and then they Trinidad threw an interception in the end zone, which which ended the game. Again, they had to, there was one play left in the game. But Trinidad, again, three interceptions. That is abnormal. I have never seen Trinidad Chambliss throw three interceptions since he's been the starter for Old Miss. But Arch Manning, again, it's the tale of two halves with this guy. He looks amazing in the first half. And then in the second half, it's he's a completely different person. And I don't know whether it's the offense, whether it's the offensive line. However, what saved Texas in the game last night was the fact that Ralique Brown finally got going. 23 carries, 1577 yards, seven yards a carry. And what and the offensive line pushed old old miss around in the fourth quarter specifically. They got going. Why they go away from that, I'm not sure. But Arch Manning again, a QBR 50, not great. And I thought that six was better than 16. And I'm I think you can make the argument that Trinidad Chambliss was better than Arch Manning. A win's a win for Texas. I'm not sure how how Texas fans still feel about Arch Manning, but he he showed, he let out some anger yesterday. You could see it, especially in the first half, when it's 24 to 3. He had two rushing touchdowns. He's feeling himself a little bit. They used his legs a little bit more, and I think that got him into the game. And then in the second half, it was just same old Texas offense and same old Arch. So I'm there is a long, long way to go. Number one, Miami got their blowout of pit, but Malachi Tony, at this point, I think, is running away with the Heisman. He had just an outstanding day yesterday again. He sixteen receptions, 194 yards, three touchdowns, along a fifty-three. They did whatever they wanted on the ground, pretty much, and then the defense just stepped up and shut down Pittsburgh's running game. And then the number two, or I'm sorry, we talked about the number two team in the country. The number six team, six team in the country, the Indiana Hoosers went on the road. And a lot of people were picking Michigan to pull the upset because it was bet it was coming off the Ohio State. Michigan's got a good defense. And Michigan's got a good defense. And that's the end of the conversation about Michigan. Because the offense is terrible. And starting Tommy Carr. Tommy Carr is a better quarterback than Bryce Underwood, but it is very clear that this is not a Bryce Underwood or Tommy Carr issue. This is Jason Beck issue. You have third and goal from the half-yard line, and you try a little to get cute with a little play action bootleg, and you lose 10 yards and then you miss a field goal instead of running downhill. Try a quarterback sneak, maybe. And then at the end of the game, you're letting the game wind down, right? You are In field goal position from inside the five-yard line on third and goal. And if maybe you get some yards, maybe you go for it on fourth down to try to win the game, right? There's like 40 seconds left. And on third and goal, instead of trying to run it and see maybe maybe you get five yards and score a touchdown, nope, they pass and they get sacked. And they had six plays, I believe, inside the Indiana. 13 yard line yesterday, either in regulation or overtime and gained one yard. Tommy Carr is a better quarterback than Bryce Underwood. He made freshman mistakes yesterday. He threw an interception when he was staring down Buchanan, and he made a really poor choice to try to get the ball to Heider on a little speed option. Absolutely, they lost the turnover battle, but Josh Hoover was awful yesterday. Indiana also has an offensive problem. Josh Hoover was eight of eighteen for 81 yards, QBR of 22. Indiana ran the ball for 1301 yards. Michigan only ran the ball for 57 yards, 1.4 yards a carry. Bryce Underwood came into the game. What do you think? Like the Indiana defense knew that they were gonna run. Like Jason Beck, we have a offensive play caller problem. This game was so incredibly even. Michigan lost a turnover battle. Michigan only had one penalty. That was That's shocking to me. They had a huge interception, but Jason Beck is a problem. Jason Beck, it is clear Jason Beck is a problem. You did nothing to help Tommy Carr out yesterday. Nothing. And then the the icing on the cake that I know that Jason Beck is a problem. He runs outside zone, negative yards. Okay, fine. Then you run inside zone, positive yards. Then you run outside zone, negative yards. At one point in the game yesterday, Michigan had run five outside zones or outside of the tackles for negative 15 yards. And yet he still continued to do it in overtime. So Michigan, the drive to tie the game, to get it into overtime. There was a lot of inside zones, then play actions off of that because Indiana had to respect the running game. They got the running game going. Michigan did. First play in overtime. What do you do? You do a toss. Which is just another form of an outside the tackle run play, outside zone. Negative four yards. So now it's second and fourteen. And you're down now in overtime by set, like you did nothing well. Jason Beck did not call a the correct game at all. He hasn't called a correct game for eight weeks now. Seven weeks. And it's really surprising because he was r amazing last year at Utah and he was amazing at New Mexico. But he is he's been awful at Michigan. And the turnovers don't help absolutely. But he is there is zero adaptability with that guy. And Kyle Whittingham said, well, i what the fans don't want to hear, and he said it yesterday, well, if that was the number six team in the country, then We're pretty good football team. No, yeah, your defense is amazing. Your defense is championship caliber. I think there is a solid argument to be made that Michigan is a top five defense this year in college football. And maybe even the best with what they with what their offense is producing on the other end. Because it is downright pitiful offensively. Defense is amazing, and that's about where you can stop. Indiana, on the other hand, they they gotta figure out because this is kind of two weeks now in a row where they've gone up against elite defensive and have just run into a brick wall and have struggled to get things going. They will they pulled it off this week against Michigan. They almost pulled it off last week against Ohio State. A win is a win, absolutely. And they were the better team yesterday. But holy cow, they gotta fit they gotta figure it out. Josh Hoover is not the upgrade I think people thought that he was. over Fernando Mendoza. But they're four and one in the Big Ten. What's crazy to think also about Michigan, this is just a side track, with how good their defense is, they could rip off five straight wins and finish the year 9-3. They really could with how good their their defense is. Let's look at the standings after, again, seven ranked teams went down yesterday, and I do believe that I covered them all. So I apologize if I missed one. but Miami BYU went down. Ole Miss went down. Texas Tech went down. Houston went down. Tennessee went down. Alabama had a had like a back and forth game tied at 17 at halftime. Kind of took over in the fourth quarter, but that was on the rocks for a little bit from them. And that fan base was about to get run. Iowa got Kirk. Or I'm sorry. Yeah, Iowa got Kirk Ferrenced. Minnesota, who's three and one in the Big Ten now, beat Iowa. At home, 13 to 10. Typical Big Ten score. but I was the one who turned the ball over yesterday. Four turnovers by Iowa, one for Minnesota. They kicked a game-winning field goal. They Minnesota lost the total yardage battle. 200 total yards yesterday for Minnesota, 288 for Iowa. And but it wait was the turn. They got Kirk Farrens. Good punts. Field position play. Minnesota played the Field position game and they won the game. They got Kirk Ferenc. And I saw a post from an Iowa fan this morning that said, when is enough enough with mediocrity? And I really would like to know for Iowa fans. How do you like what do you feel about Kirk Ference right now? Because there's no, at least from a Michigan's point of view, there's no elite upside. Right? So I guess you from one aspect, you're like, okay, we can go 10 and 2. And you very well could, right? With the rest of your schedule. You very well could. But like there, there's no 12 and You always know at least one to to three times a year you're gonna have a game like this where if you turn the ball over and you don't play perfectly, you're gonna lose the football game. Like, does that wear on you? What's so frustrating about being a Michigan fan is the elite talent is there. You see it, especially on defense, right? And Underwood's great, and the receivers are great, and the offensive line should be good. It's just it it's like what like that's another thing. It's like we should be so much better. But i I guess if you're like an Iowa fan, like you have to play perfectly every single week to get the win. There is no margin for error. J Does that way that this is a legitimate question? Does that wear on you as a fan base? But heck, you beat Michigan and you're a lot better offensively than Michigan, even with two turnovers by Hank Brown yesterday. You're a whole lot and a QBR of 16. You're a whole lot better than Michigan is offensively. Hands down. Wisconsin hosted USC, Lincoln Riley again. Two time zones over. L. I really thought that he was that he like Wisconsin is not that good good offensively, but they're really good defensively, clearly. And Wisconsin twelve of fourteen, Colton Joseph, their quarterback, went twelve of fourteen for fifty-eight yards, QBR of thirty-five. This was a game up in up there in the quad box. Wisconsin had 200 total yards of offense. USC had 241. So again, Wisconsin's defense is finally starting to click a little bit. And the big difference here, turnovers, once again. I mean, that's been the theme. The other theme is that USC's running game that has been average this year went for negative 17 yards yesterday. That's embarrassing. Their lead rusher was Sean Austin. Seven carries, 28 yards. Wow. Lincoln Riley. my goodness. He's gonna be hearing about it all week. Wisconsin did everything right. They won the turnover battle. They played field position. They beat him in rushing, 142 yards for Wisconsin. And they didn't turn the ball over themselves. USC might have a Lincoln Riley problem because that you can't go on the road and look that pitiful. Again, this was a quad box game last night, and I was really kind of locked into Texas Ole Miss. So, you know, I would look it up and I was like, wow, like USC just can't get anything going. I did not realize the stats were this bad. that is that's really negative seventeen yards rushing on the road. So the Big Ten and the SEC are just beating each other up. So Iowa makes six, USC makes seven, LSU got a big win. So seven ranked teams went down yesterday in caught in chaos college football 2026. So let's get an update on the conferences right now. Miami's still leading the ACC. SMU put 57, I believe, on Cal yesterday at home. They are now in second position in the ACC. It's between them and Wake. Virginia Tech got a huge win on the road over Clemson. So the top three, I'm going to give everyone the top three in every conference. So in the ACC, in order, it's Miami, SMU, Wake Forest. And right now it looks like Miami and then everybody else, but don't sleep on those Mustangs. In the Big 12, we've gotten some separation. Utah at 4 0, and then it goes BYU and Arizona are your top three because Arizona got a big win last night as well. And they're number 25. So they are climbing up the rankings in the Big 20 10. UCLA, I gotta stop doubting them at some point, you would think, right? I keep like, they this is gonna be a game. Now they played Michigan State yesterday. They won by 18. Michigan State's really bad. They're but they're 7-0 with a backup quarterback and a running game. Backup quarterback, running game, great defense. Not turning the ball over. That's all you need. So it's UCLA 5-0. Ohio State 4-0. So they're tied at the comp top. And then Indiana 4 1. And then shout out Northwestern. Absolutely taking apart Rutgers 42 to 14, which it's Rutgers. Rutgers is really bad. Really bad. Really bad. so shout out to Northwest Northwestern, yes. In the SEC, Kentucky continues to sit atop the SEC, Georgia right behind them, and now it's Alabama four and two right behind them. They the SEC's got a they're just them in the Big Ten. But they're gonna they're just gonna eat each other. There's gonna be so much carnage in those two conferences at the end of the year that they might not each get three plus teams in. They might only get two teams in. There is a doomsday scenario where each conference only gets two teams in. The Pac-12, it's Boise State and Oregon State at the top, filed by Texas State there, but Boise State had another nice and win. They are the highest group of six team. They are three and in. Conference, but Oregon States, they got Jesse Legree, so they are not out of it. In the Mountain West, the North Dakota State buys in loss last night to the New Mexico Lobos. So it's New Mexico, Wyoming, New and L V at the top of the Mountain West. New Mexico, by the way, their only loss is to Oklahoma. So do they get ranked eventually? The Mac, it's Ohio, Toledo, Western. I believe the Mac is out of group of six contention. At this point in time, Conference USA, I also believe is out of group of six contention. It's Liberty, Jacksonville State, and New Mexico State. Why New Mexico State and New Mexico aren't in the same conference? I don't know. I don't ask questions. I just work here. And then in the American, which I think it would be Boise, it would so it would be the mountain, or it would be the Pac-12 in Boise, or it's the American. That is where your group of six is gonna come from. That one team that gets represent gets to represent the group of six in the football playoffs. It's UTSA, Texas, and Army. Or North Texas, excuse me, and Army, but UTSA is seven and one four knowing conference. What a week. And I think it's just gonna get crazier and crazier as we go. I really do. look just looking ahead. You have Arizona and Texas Tech taking on each other. So another ranked team's gonna go down. It depends if Iowa gets to stay ranked or if anyone ranks Wisconsin, but I could have met I could see it both Iowa being I was hosting Wisconsin, so I could see that. being another ranked another potential ranked team going down if I was still ranked. Iwa Auburn's playing Ole Miss. Ole Miss will still be ranked. Auburn got picked apart by LSU, but you know, the SEC's so up and down, you never know what you're gonna get. BYU will still be ranked and hosting Arizona State. It is the world's largest outdoor cocktail party between Ranked Florida and ranked Georgia. So the another ranked team's gonna go down and another SEC. Like if Florida beats Georgia and Georgia now has two SEC losses. This season is gonna be wild. Indiana, you better solve your offensive woes because Minnesota, they can Kirk Ferrance you. We we've we've seen that twice now. They Kirk Ferrence Michigan and they Kirk Farrence Kirk Ferrance. Oregon's it was ten nothing against Illinois. Illinois ripped off 21 straight. Oregon's now four and three, two and two in the Big Ten. I I told everyone Oregon was going to be mediocre this year. They're taking on Northwestern, hosting Northwestern, Chip Kelly going home to call plays, where he was the head coach for so long. Utah has to go on the road to Cincinnati. Huge game. Huge game. Utah on the road at Cincinnati. Miami's going on the road to North Carolina and Bill Belichick. So that's gonna be a big game. Did North Carolina play that play this week? they lost to Syracuse by one point. I'm finding about that in overtime. So they probably went for two. Syracuse went for two in overtime and got it. North Carolina scored first. And Syracuse sc scored second, which you do in overtime. And then you if you go second in overtime, you cause you gotta go for two in second overtime anyway. You might as well just try to end the game. Wow. So North Carolina's two and two, but North Carolina's playing better than they were at the start of the season. Do they have anything for Miami to slow down their offense? I'm gonna go no. And then Ohio State and USC is USC still ranked, but that that's a That's in Los Angeles. So USC will play better. They'll run the ball better. Ohio State's quarterback situation is not solid anymore. Not possibility of another ranked team. Texas is hosting Mississippi State. Is Cario Taylor back? And is Camario Taylor back in a big way? They lost to Oklahoma yesterday. That's three straight losses right now for the Bulldogs. But Kamario Taylor's dealing with Turf Toe, which sounds funny, but it's not fun at all. So there are some big again, more ranked teams are gonna fall next week. And this is gonna be for the rest of the season. We're gonna look up. I I swear we're gonna look up, and the top ranked team in the country is gonna have two plus losses at the end of the season. It's gonna happen. I I mean, maybe with. Maybe not with Miami being undefeated, because I'm not sure. I mean, anyone can in on any given week beat Miami. But Ohio but right now, like this will obviously be reshaped. Okay, so you got Miami, they can lose. BYU already lost last week and can lose to anybody. Ohio State doesn't has a doesn't have a quarterback. Notre Dame still has two big games against Miami and against SMU, two ranked teams. Georgia can lose. Indiana's offense has huge question marks. Ole Miss already has two losses. Texas Tech has another loss. UCLA is again playing with backup quarterback. You Utah was asleep for three quarters, then woke up. Tennessee's got two losses. And Kentucky already has a loss and can lose to anybody. And that's the top 12. This is going to be a wild rest of the season, and I'm all here for it. Probably I will definitely not do a recap video next week taking a vacation, birthday vacation for my wife. We are headed to Jamaica, so that'll be fun. And I will not be on ne I will not do a rundown or recap next week, but I and I probably won't be on next week's full-length pod either. so you will just have to deal with Simeon and Robert for that. So anyway. that'll do it for this week's episode. Thank you everyone for being here. Remember, if you're a twin, practice your twin tuition. Could save your life one day.
