- 1:26Speaker 1: you want to see the listings, what's playing. But get
- 1:29Speaker 1: over to the Capitol Showplace Theater tonight and catch a
- 1:34Speaker 1: movie for just $ 5. Listen, guys. What are you waiting for?
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's $ 5. When's the last time you took your partner
- 1:47Speaker 1: out to a movie? You don't have to tell her
- 1:53Speaker 1: that it's only costing you $ 10. But then again, if
- 1:58Speaker 1: you want to get some popcorn, some cold drinks, get
- 2:01Speaker 1: out to the movies tonight. The weather forecast is absolutely
- 2:05Speaker 1: stellar for a movie. The only thing it's really not is...
- 2:10Speaker 1: cold yet. As a matter of fact, the rest of
- 2:14Speaker 1: this week, it is going to be steadily warming up.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We're talking about, by Thursday, maybe I've heard rumors of
- 2:24Speaker 1: 75 degrees. So, here's another thing I wanted to say
- 2:30Speaker 1: this morning. I don't know what it is, but when
- 2:35Speaker 1: it's foggy, cloudy, drizzly, The vibrancy, I know, big word,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I've had a cup of coffee, of the foliage is
- 2:48Speaker 1: absolutely spectacular. I just love it. And sometimes I even
- 2:55Speaker 1: put on my little yellow sunglasses, which seem to pull
- 3:01Speaker 1: the color out even more. There's just something about this
- 3:04Speaker 1: time of year. It is absolutely spectacular. A big one
- 3:07Speaker 1: last night, Bears 27, Eagles 7 at Soldier Field. The
- 3:13Speaker 1: story of the night, Chicago's starting quarterback, Caleb Williams, out
- 3:18Speaker 1: with a hamstring. So Case Keenum got his first start
- 3:26Speaker 1: since 2023 and absolutely carved up Philly. There is so
- 3:32Speaker 1: much going on in the sports world.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Hopefully.
- 3:35Speaker 1: you got a chance to enjoy some Monday night football
- 3:39Speaker 1: last night. Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the beginning of the day.
- 3:46Speaker 1: At least it is for some. Maybe you got started
- 3:48Speaker 1: at stupid o'clock this morning, and that's fine. It is
- 3:51Speaker 1: the 29th already of September. There's a guy that is
- 3:57Speaker 1: sitting next to me on the curvy couch this morning.
- 4:00Speaker 1: This guy is ladies and gentlemen, is my good friend
- 4:03Speaker 1: Jay Austin. Jay, you and I have lost touch over
- 4:09Speaker 1: a couple of years here, but we're back.
- 4:11Speaker 2: We're back.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And I am so thrilled to have you on the air.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Have you been on the air with me before? I
- 4:17Speaker 1: don't think so.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Dude, I am so happy to reconnect with you. Welcome
- 4:24Speaker 1: to Aired Out. Listen, I want everybody to know, Jay Austin,
- 4:29Speaker 1: this dude right here, filmmaker, photographer, creative mind. You, I think, Jay,
- 4:38Speaker 1: were the very first person, you and Frankie, that I said,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, I'm thinking about starting a podcast.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 1: That was a long time ago. It was eight years ago, George.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Eight years ago.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And I.
- 4:59Speaker 1: We were working together over at the Radio Vermont group.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yep.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And you were the one that mocked up a logo
- 5:07Speaker 1: for me. The one that's right behind you. Right there.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Right there.
- 5:12Speaker 3: God, dude.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And you said to me, how's this? And I said, stop.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Don't change a thing. That's it right there. You nailed it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And I've had it ever since, man.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I just absolutely love it. You came up with the red.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Literally everything, dude.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah. You had the name.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And then you kind of just let me have some
- 5:38Speaker 2: fun with it.
- 5:38Speaker 1: You and Frankie both were so supportive of me starting this,
- 5:48Speaker 1: getting the ball rolling.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 1: You guys, you pushed me a couple of times, and
- 5:55Speaker 1: I remember. And I remember ever so slightly, a few
- 6:01Speaker 1: times kind of tapping the brakes, not sure. And I
- 6:05Speaker 1: remember you saying to me, come on, man, you got this.
- 6:09Speaker 1: You got this. The logo looks sharp. All you got
- 6:11Speaker 1: to do is just start getting some content onto the mic.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And I really appreciate that, man. I'll never forget that
- 6:18Speaker 1: about both of you and Frankie.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you know, you always are so good at.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Talking with people.
- 6:24Speaker 4: And you did some great things on the morning show
- 6:28Speaker 4: when we were at the one.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And bringing in some community members and chatting with them
- 6:34Speaker 4: and stuff.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But, you know, at the end of the day, it
- 6:36Speaker 2: was a music station, too. So you're always cutting to
- 6:39Speaker 2: the music. That's it.
- 6:40Speaker 4: You know, you had like your late night talk show
- 6:43Speaker 4: bits of like, all right, we got three minutes. Let's
- 6:47Speaker 4: hit the talking points and move on.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Here's the thing.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I never could get it done in three minutes.
- 6:52Speaker 3: No.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I was a podcaster, not a radio guy.
- 6:57Speaker 4: There may have been a couple of times where Frankie
- 6:59Speaker 4: had to pop his head in and remind you that
- 7:01Speaker 4: you were on a music station.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Well, he would be on the other side of the
- 7:05Speaker 1: glass going like this. Man, we had fun though. Those
- 7:10Speaker 1: were some, some great times. They were, there were some
- 7:13Speaker 1: great times. I met you. You were working for the
- 7:17Speaker 1: radio Vermont group. Obviously, what were you hired to do
- 7:21Speaker 1: for radio? You were, Basically hired to take the audio
- 7:28Speaker 1: of radio and make it visual.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I was working for a camera store, Green Mountain Camera,
- 7:40Speaker 4: up in Waterbury and Burlington. And had an opportunity through
- 7:48Speaker 4: my connection with Mr. Eric Michaels to.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Carve out kind of a new marketing opportunity for the
- 7:57Speaker 4: radio group that could take advantage of some social media,
- 8:03Speaker 4: online trends, and start introducing some video content.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And, yeah, it turned into a lot of different things.
- 8:13Speaker 4: It was some kind of early podcast-type things where we
- 8:19Speaker 4: took some on-air stuff Packaged them up, put them online.
- 8:25Speaker 4: And then we also just started doing some social media posts,
- 8:29Speaker 4: video posts, and getting clients and sponsors involved and having
- 8:33Speaker 4: a lot of fun with that.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You were basically bringing some radio commercials to life on
- 8:41Speaker 1: the visual spectrum.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, I honestly, and I say this humbly, I
- 8:49Speaker 1: don't know of any, uh, radio group that was doing that.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I think we were, uh, we were pretty, uh, pretty
- 9:01Speaker 4: early to that, to that trend. And, um, I think
- 9:04Speaker 4: it worked out pretty well. I mean, we, we had, uh,
- 9:07Speaker 4: at one point our digital, the online stream for the
- 9:11Speaker 4: radio stations was doing like video ad placements. So if
- 9:15Speaker 4: people were streaming on their phone, they'd have a little,
- 9:17Speaker 4: you know, local spot pop up and play.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And, um, yeah, it was, it was pretty, you were
- 9:23Speaker 1: tying in the web and you were tying in, uh,
- 9:26Speaker 1: social media, which was very much, very much on the upswing.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I mean, we're talking what, uh, 10 years ago. Yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Something like that. 12 years ago. Wow, dude.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: We, we goofed around a lot. Um, We had some fun. And,
- 9:47Speaker 1: of course, Frankie, just a buffoon.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Really.
- 9:56Speaker 2: That does sum him up pretty well.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You know, uh, where do, where do we start? Let's, let's,
- 10:03Speaker 1: we should, first of all, I mean, we are going
- 10:06Speaker 1: to be talking about you, what you're doing, um, how you're,
- 10:11Speaker 1: you're crafting your, your brand and what you want to
- 10:15Speaker 1: do going forward. You, you live locally, right? In Plainfield. Um,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and you're going to be doing some more stuff with
- 10:22Speaker 1: me too, but we're going to get there. But let's
- 10:26Speaker 1: show our viewers this morning a little bit of what
- 10:34Speaker 1: you did. Should we start out with something light? Should
- 10:39Speaker 1: we do the Hyundai Hail Mary?
- 10:42Speaker 2: A little blast from the past?
- 10:45Speaker 1: A huge blast from the past. This was basically Mitchell J.,
- 10:50Speaker 1: Over at Mid-State Dodge and Hyundai. Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 4: They were an early adopter to the digital marketing that
- 10:56Speaker 4: we were doing at the radio station. So they saw
- 11:01Speaker 4: the potential. And, yeah, they sponsored this program that you, me,
- 11:07Speaker 4: and Frankie kind of developed called Riding.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Shotgun, where we were.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Test driving new cars, filming the whole thing, and getting
- 11:16Speaker 4: you and Frankie talking about them.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Putting them on Facebook and....
- 11:22Speaker 1: Testimonial stuff. Yeah. And you as the tech guy, you
- 11:27Speaker 1: were basically getting these cars from MidState and then outfitting
- 11:33Speaker 1: the inside of these cars with several cameras.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we used, what, three or four? I think we
- 11:41Speaker 2: used four GoPros. We had three on the inside, one
- 11:43Speaker 2: on the outside. And it was.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Yeah, get them all rolling, call action, and then say
- 11:52Speaker 4: see you later to you and Frankie. Let you drive
- 11:54Speaker 4: around for, I don't know, what, 30, 20 minutes.
- 11:56Speaker 2: 30 minutes?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, goof around.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Goof around, do whatever.
- 12:00Speaker 4: We'd have a kind of basic outline of maybe where
- 12:02Speaker 4: you were going to go, what you were going to do.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And that was it.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Some donuts in the parking lot. But we just, we
- 12:11Speaker 1: had so much fun.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And you, I mean, let's be honest. You had fun
- 12:20Speaker 1: slicing and dicing.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Because I remember you coming in in the morning and saying, oh,
- 12:26Speaker 1: my God, wait till you see this. I'm having so
- 12:29Speaker 1: much fun right now. But anyway, let's show. Should we
- 12:36Speaker 1: show one of them?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, just a little snippet of one.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Let me pull it up here. And, yeah, here we go.
- 12:47Speaker 1: this was, uh, set the stage for this. So one
- 12:50Speaker 1: more time, man.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Oh, let's see.
- 12:52Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:52Speaker 4: So this was, uh, riding shotgun episode with, uh, with
- 12:57Speaker 4: mid state Hyundai featuring, uh, uh, what was it? The
- 13:02Speaker 4: new Hyundai Tucson at the time. So, um, and this
- 13:06Speaker 4: had to have been this time of year, I guess.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I mean, it was, it was football season. It was, um, and, uh,
- 13:15Speaker 4: Frankie was very excited about that, and you were kind
- 13:18Speaker 4: of just along for the ride.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I had no idea. I still don't with anything to
- 13:22Speaker 1: do with football. But here it is, just a quick
- 13:25Speaker 1: clip of what we did eight, nine years ago, something
- 13:29Speaker 1: like that. I'm going to take you up on your
- 13:31Speaker 1: offer to play football. You want to do that? Right now.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Really?
- 13:46Speaker 1: Mom says I can do anything. I gotta catch this football.
- 13:53Speaker 6: I gotta catch it right now.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Come on, Frankie! Thank you. Omaha! Omaha!
- 14:57Speaker 2: Blue!
- 14:58Speaker 4: Blue!
- 14:58Speaker 3: Blue!
- 14:59Speaker 2: Big play!
- 15:00Speaker 3: Big play! Oh! Oh! Yes!
- 15:07Speaker 7: Selfie.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Oh, my God, Jay. That was so much fun, dude.
- 15:14Speaker 1: So much fun.
- 15:15Speaker 4: And from, from what I, from what I recall, uh,
- 15:20Speaker 4: not a whole lot of planning. I mean, I think
- 15:22Speaker 4: the gist of that shoot was, Hey, we got this
- 15:25Speaker 4: football stuff. Let's go play catch.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:29Speaker 4: And, and then just, you know, the three of us
- 15:32Speaker 4: in the moment, just coming up with fun stuff.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Great memories, man. What do you, what do you, um, you,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you worked for a, production, a video production company for
- 15:47Speaker 1: a while.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:48Speaker 4: So after I left the radio group, I went to
- 15:50Speaker 4: a moving pictures division. Uh, and for a while we were, uh, uh,
- 15:56Speaker 4: based right in Waterbury. Um, and then, you know, through, uh,
- 16:02Speaker 4: COVID kind of moved to working remotely and, um, just
- 16:07Speaker 4: working out of a home office. Um, And Christian Clark,
- 16:12Speaker 4: the owner of Moving Pictures Division.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah, him and I worked for the past almost nine years.
- 16:21Speaker 4: And just recently transitioned to start my own company. But yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 4: him and I, we've had a lot of adventures over.
- 16:30Speaker 1: The past nine years. Yeah, you have. Visual storytelling is,
- 16:36Speaker 1: I think... and you correct me if I'm wrong, probably, um,
- 16:41Speaker 1: the biggest thing that you hang your hat on.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Uh, storytelling through video is so powerful. It's so, I
- 16:55Speaker 4: could be very persuasive. It can be very emotional. It
- 16:58Speaker 4: can be, uh, it's one of the best ways to
- 17:03Speaker 4: get people to remember something. Um, And you can just
- 17:08Speaker 4: utilize those tools to share your message in a way
- 17:11Speaker 4: that can hit on those things you want. If you
- 17:14Speaker 4: want it to have an emotional impact, if you want
- 17:17Speaker 4: it to have humor to it, if you want it
- 17:20Speaker 4: to be really memorable in some way, it's a great
- 17:24Speaker 4: platform for that.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Well, here's the thing, and you know this, but it's
- 17:27Speaker 1: like having a great story or storyline is one thing.
- 17:34Speaker 1: And I know you love the nonfiction. You're a nonfiction guy.
- 17:38Speaker 1: You love stuff that's real. But also having the creative mind,
- 17:44Speaker 1: which you have as a photographer, knowing in your brain,
- 17:52Speaker 1: in your eyes... The right lighting, the right time of day.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Is it raining? Is it not? I mean, I was
- 17:59Speaker 1: just talking this morning about driving in. Why are the
- 18:02Speaker 1: colors on a day like today so vibrant?
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Well, rain makes for a lot of really great looking shots.
- 18:16Speaker 4: I can't tell you the number of times. It's a
- 18:19Speaker 4: fun thing to look out for when you're watching any
- 18:21Speaker 4: big movie of You know, just some random shot where
- 18:26Speaker 4: you got some folks walking across a big parking lot.
- 18:29Speaker 4: And there's no evidence that it rained, but the parking
- 18:32Speaker 4: lot's wet. And it's often done just they'll hose it down.
- 18:37Speaker 2: It just looks better.
- 18:38Speaker 4: There's something about that. You get the reflections. You get
- 18:42Speaker 4: the textures. You get the, you know, the reflection of
- 18:45Speaker 4: the sky in there. And it just can bring a
- 18:48Speaker 4: real interesting look. And certainly for the colors on the
- 18:51Speaker 4: leaves right now, yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 2: You get them.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And you've shot weddings before. I'm sure you've had to
- 18:56Speaker 1: say to a bride, Oh no, no, no, no, no.
- 18:59Speaker 1: This is actually great news that it's a little cloudy.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Oh, totally.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, clouds are the big soft box in
- 19:07Speaker 4: the sky. They, they make, uh, make for some very
- 19:10Speaker 4: nice lighting. You know, we, uh, I've done a lot of, uh,
- 19:14Speaker 4: you know, tourism type videos for showcasing different locations and, um,
- 19:22Speaker 4: Quite often what you see in videos or even still
- 19:25Speaker 4: photography and pamphlets at the travel center or whatever, I
- 19:30Speaker 4: call them Chamber of Commerce photos where it's crystal clear
- 19:34Speaker 4: blue skies. You're taking it at high noon. And it's
- 19:39Speaker 4: got a look to it. It's a look we're all
- 19:41Speaker 4: used to seeing, but there isn't... uh there's something missing
- 19:48Speaker 4: you know it's a little generic it's a little plain
- 19:52Speaker 4: it's a little predictable but you know you wait to
- 19:57Speaker 4: you know what we like to call our golden hours
- 19:59Speaker 4: of the day um Around sunrise and sunset and the
- 20:05Speaker 4: quality of light just gets so much more interesting.
- 20:07Speaker 2: You get longer shadows.
- 20:09Speaker 7: Sure.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Contrast. You get all that kind of stuff.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Sure. You know, just the other day was out working
- 20:16Speaker 1: on my old 76 pickup. And, you know, Sherilyn just
- 20:25Speaker 1: yells out the window. Oh, my God, look at the sunset.
- 20:28Speaker 1: And it was. it was kind of a, it was,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I don't know what time of night it was, but
- 20:32Speaker 1: it was, it was getting there. And there was something
- 20:36Speaker 1: about the, the sky just kind of lit up with these,
- 20:40Speaker 1: these pink and orange hues. And I took a step
- 20:45Speaker 1: back and I looked at my, my truck and I'm like,
- 20:47Speaker 1: Oh my God, you need to close the hood and
- 20:49Speaker 1: grab a shot of that right now. You, you, you
- 20:53Speaker 1: kind of understand the, um, The sense of urgency of
- 20:59Speaker 1: hitting opportunities, moments, whether it's with your camera or whether
- 21:06Speaker 1: you're still camera or your video camera. You got to
- 21:10Speaker 1: get it right now.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 2: For me, you know, all of this for me started
- 21:15Speaker 2: with photography. Sure.
- 21:17Speaker 4: That was kind of my first in probably at, you know,
- 21:21Speaker 4: about 12, 13 years old. My uncles got me. into
- 21:25Speaker 4: photography and, uh, film photography back then. Um, it's taught
- 21:32Speaker 4: me a lot about looking for the right light.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Taught me a lot about patience, taught me a lot
- 21:38Speaker 4: about planning, uh, to figure out, you know, what shot
- 21:42Speaker 4: do you want to get? What conditions do you want
- 21:44Speaker 4: it to be in? And, uh, that's all translated so
- 21:48Speaker 4: well over to video.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I'm listening to you and I'm like, we got to
- 21:54Speaker 1: show this because this is almost a perfect example of this.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Set us up here on this.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:02Speaker 2: What are we looking at? This is the Stowe one?
- 22:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 2: So this is a little tourism piece we did for Stowe.
- 22:10Speaker 2: And this was, you know.
- 22:13Speaker 3: On.
- 22:15Speaker 4: The logistics side, right? There is a lot of planning
- 22:19Speaker 4: that went into this to maximize... when we needed those
- 22:22Speaker 4: big scenics, uh, and what time of day we wanted
- 22:26Speaker 4: to shoot those versus when we were doing something that
- 22:28Speaker 4: could be when the lighting wasn't as good and, and
- 22:32Speaker 4: kind of balancing out that schedule to, uh, yeah, get
- 22:36Speaker 4: something that, that looks really nice.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Are you, are you flying a drone here? Yeah.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Do you love drone work?
- 22:44Speaker 2: I do.
- 22:45Speaker 4: It's, it's a perspective you just can't really get any
- 22:49Speaker 4: other way. And, It's a great way of establishing a
- 22:53Speaker 4: sense of place and kind of putting you somewhere. It's interesting, right,
- 23:00Speaker 4: that for a lot of drone stuff, you never have
- 23:03Speaker 4: that perspective, but you can also immediately recognize places.
- 23:08Speaker 2: So it's like people look at this and they're like, oh, yeah,
- 23:11Speaker 2: that's Stowe. That's the steeple in the middle of town.
- 23:16Speaker 4: I like using drone shots to kind of build, establish
- 23:20Speaker 4: that sense of place.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And the fog is lifting or maybe it's a cloud,
- 23:23Speaker 1: but you were probably like, I got to get up
- 23:27Speaker 1: into that cloud right now.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 23:31Speaker 4: So this is that early morning fog burning off, lifting
- 23:35Speaker 4: as the sun's coming up on a, we shot this
- 23:38Speaker 4: in late August.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And yeah, just the perfect conditions.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 1: And you must be like in a mindset of, please
- 23:50Speaker 1: don't talk to me right now. I got to move quickly.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I know I got it. There's all kinds of stuff
- 23:56Speaker 1: going on in my head right now. I'm setting this up.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I'm plugging this in. Just zip it.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's, you know, I mean, for something like this,
- 24:04Speaker 4: wide open spaces, the risk is a lot lower. So
- 24:07Speaker 4: you're really just focusing on, you know, capturing that best
- 24:12Speaker 4: moment you can find up there. But, you know, yeah, drones,
- 24:18Speaker 4: you got to be safe.
- 24:20Speaker 2: You got to be smart with them. You got to
- 24:23Speaker 2: pay attention, for sure.
- 24:24Speaker 1: All right, let's show it. Here we go.
- 24:25Speaker 3: How's it feel?
- 24:29Speaker 4: First day of the summer and it's calling for good weather.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I feel like, how's it feel?
- 24:36Speaker 3: I got a feeling this will be the best one yet.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Look at that. Wow, this is incredible.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Wow, dude. Outstanding. Short, sweet.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Short, to the point.
- 25:02Speaker 1: To the point.
- 25:03Speaker 2: It's kind of funny.
- 25:03Speaker 4: As we played that, I realized that's probably in the
- 25:08Speaker 4: nine years of working with Christian. I think that's only
- 25:12Speaker 4: the second time I've appeared on camera. I forgot that
- 25:16Speaker 4: that was... I play the role of the fly fishing
- 25:21Speaker 4: instructor in there, which is kind of just a way
- 25:26Speaker 4: to make that scene a little bit simpler. We had
- 25:29Speaker 4: a crew that hiked up to, was it Sterling Pond
- 25:33Speaker 4: up on Mansfield?
- 25:34Speaker 1: Sterling Pond, yeah. And you hit Bingham Falls too.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Yeah, we went to Bingham Falls. But yeah, we did
- 25:40Speaker 4: a little fishing up on Sterling Pond. And yeah, I
- 25:43Speaker 4: stepped in for that. But boy, I'd much prefer to
- 25:46Speaker 4: be behind the camera.
- 25:48Speaker 1: What was, speaking of filling in roles as seconds or
- 25:55Speaker 1: as props or what's the word I'm thinking of here?
- 25:59Speaker 2: Talent.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Talent, fill-ins, whatever it is. You came to Frankie and I,
- 26:05Speaker 1: and I had forgotten all about this. You said, hey, look,
- 26:11Speaker 1: Go Vermont is doing a van pool promotion. and I
- 26:18Speaker 1: need you guys to be part of this. And we're like,
- 26:20Speaker 1: what are you, what are you talking about? What, what,
- 26:22Speaker 1: what was that all about?
- 26:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:24Speaker 4: So this was, uh, boy, this, this was early on,
- 26:28Speaker 4: probably within my first year or two working with Christian. And, um,
- 26:34Speaker 4: we were working with a place creative company up in
- 26:37Speaker 4: Burlington on, on doing these promotional campaigns for, for, uh, uh,
- 26:43Speaker 4: department of, uh, transportation.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 4: And it was this, this kind of commuting service that
- 26:48Speaker 4: they were trying to get off the ground.
- 26:50Speaker 2: And yeah, it was a fully scripted piece.
- 26:54Speaker 4: We had this great actor, um, that, that came in
- 26:58Speaker 4: to kind of play our lead, lead guy, uh, Wayne Tatrick, um, just, uh, awesome,
- 27:04Speaker 4: awesome guy. And, but we needed some, some, some fill-ins
- 27:09Speaker 4: for the background to, uh, help really round out all
- 27:12Speaker 4: these characters. And, and there was a couple characters that
- 27:16Speaker 4: I pretty quickly identified as like, yeah, JD and Frankie
- 27:20Speaker 4: would do this perfectly.
- 27:22Speaker 1: So I, I haven't seen this and we're going to,
- 27:25Speaker 1: we're about to show it, but I haven't seen this
- 27:28Speaker 1: since we shot it. So I've forgotten probably 2018, 2018.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 1: I don't, I've, this is all going to be coming
- 27:40Speaker 1: back to me. I haven't seen it since. So here
- 27:42Speaker 1: it is.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Oh, hello.
- 27:51Speaker 5: I'm Ted Connors, workplace transportation expert from Vermont.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Let me guess.
- 28:00Speaker 5: Your commute is a money suck that beats the living
- 28:03Speaker 5: heck out of your vehicle. If only someone could wave
- 28:05Speaker 5: a magic wand, give you a new ride, and throw
- 28:08Speaker 5: in a gas card.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Oh, and pay for all repairs, maintenance, and insurance, too.
- 28:12Speaker 5: Well, guess what? That's what we did! Introducing Vanpool by
- 28:17Speaker 5: Enterprise Rideshare. The real vans are way bigger. Sure, we
- 28:24Speaker 5: all know carpooling's a good idea, but do you really
- 28:26Speaker 5: want to hobble to work in Carl's 76 AMC Pacer
- 28:29Speaker 5: that smells like corn chips and mothballs?
- 28:31Speaker 2: I like corn chips.
- 28:32Speaker 5: Or would you rather get a ride on the SS
- 28:34Speaker 5: vanpool with Captain Rick at the helm?
- 28:36Speaker 1: Judy does.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Here's how it works. First, you get five or more
- 28:43Speaker 5: people all going to and from the same places. You
- 28:47Speaker 5: pick drivers, schedules, the type of vehicle you want, and
- 28:51Speaker 5: for pennies on the dollar, these good people have got
- 28:54Speaker 5: a van. All for a monthly fee, which even covers
- 28:57Speaker 5: your gas. Forget about maintenance and repairs too. Can switching
- 29:01Speaker 5: to vanpool save you thousands.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Of dollars each year?
- 29:04Speaker 5: Pretty much. Here, you want this money back?
- 29:07Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 29:08Speaker 5: And if you're worried about last minute schedule changes or accidents,
- 29:11Speaker 5: our ride home benefit means we'll get you where you
- 29:13Speaker 5: need to go for free. And for all you CEO-type people,
- 29:19Speaker 5: you want more parking spots out front and happy employees inside,
- 29:22Speaker 5: start being a rock star. Motivate your team to start
- 29:25Speaker 5: a vanpool today and make these guys your biggest fans.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Vanpool?
- 29:30Speaker 2: More like fan-cool.
- 29:32Speaker 5: One, two, three. Listen to this.
- 29:30Speaker 2: More like Van Cool.
- 29:34Speaker 3: One, two, three.
- 29:43Speaker 6: To learn how you can save big money on your
- 29:45Speaker 6: commuting costs with Van Pool by Enterprise.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Rideshare, visit govermont.org slash vanpool or call 1-800-685-RIDE.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Oh, my God, dude.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I forgot. I forgot all about that. Uh, they had cool.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Oh my God. That was great. That was so much fun.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 30:09Speaker 4: It's not often that, uh, you know, some of those
- 30:12Speaker 4: state agencies are willing to have.
- 30:14Speaker 2: That much fun.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. They're a little stiff.
- 30:16Speaker 2: They really, uh, let their hair down for that.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Yeah, they did. It was fun. You know, the thing is, and,
- 30:24Speaker 1: and you know, this like, like you said, um, You've
- 30:27Speaker 1: got to put something in front of people that they remember,
- 30:32Speaker 1: whether it's either through laughter or maybe shedding a tear.
- 30:39Speaker 1: But they've got to remember. It's got to stick to
- 30:41Speaker 1: the bones. There's so much going on today that is
- 30:46Speaker 1: slipping through the cracks. We're overstimulated. We're desensitized to so
- 30:51Speaker 1: much that's coming down the pipe, whether it's our phone,
- 30:54Speaker 1: whether it's TV, wherever.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:56Speaker 1: You got to, if you're going to do something, you
- 31:00Speaker 1: got to make people remember it, Jay.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 4: And I think there's a lot of different ways of
- 31:07Speaker 4: doing that. And it's not, you know, the best laid
- 31:12Speaker 4: plans can still turn into something that no one's going
- 31:15Speaker 4: to remember.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Sure.
- 31:17Speaker 4: But I think that it's always the goal. It's always
- 31:20Speaker 4: the North Star of when you're making something to just
- 31:23Speaker 4: think about like what, What are people going to take
- 31:26Speaker 4: away in this moment? What are people going to, what's
- 31:29Speaker 4: really going to land? What's going to, yeah, like you said,
- 31:32Speaker 4: kind of be sticky with them.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 1: You have this, your mind is such an incredible paintbrush.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I remember saying to you, yeah, but, and you say, no, no, no, no.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Just like it is. I want it just like it is.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I got this vision. Because, I mean, there were, you know,
- 31:58Speaker 1: I'm like, my God, nobody told me to do my
- 32:00Speaker 1: hair or wear a different shirt. And you were like, no,
- 32:05Speaker 1: just I want it as is.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, one of the leading motivational factors for
- 32:15Speaker 4: me to go out on my own was there is a,
- 32:22Speaker 4: There's a part of the process of working on a
- 32:25Speaker 4: smaller project where I'm coming up with an idea, I'm
- 32:31Speaker 4: directing and shooting and then editing and delivering that idea
- 32:36Speaker 4: and seeing it from start to finish that allows for
- 32:41Speaker 4: a lot of creative opportunities that can sometimes get lost
- 32:50Speaker 4: in the shuffle of having, uh, a big crew or
- 32:55Speaker 4: a big agency or.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Whatever it might be. Those, those all serve purposes.
- 33:01Speaker 4: And certainly on a technical level, you get, um, you
- 33:05Speaker 4: can get far superior stuff, but on a kind of
- 33:08Speaker 4: docu style storytelling level, um, Boy, I find a lot
- 33:16Speaker 4: of value in if I'm the one sitting behind the
- 33:19Speaker 4: camera listening to an interview and already thinking about how
- 33:24Speaker 4: I'm going to edit that later on.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I love that.
- 33:30Speaker 4: It's nice in those situations where you don't have to
- 33:33Speaker 4: give up one of those steps. You can kind of
- 33:38Speaker 4: control all of that.
- 33:39Speaker 1: And you're not the... kind of guy that is like
- 33:43Speaker 1: wait stop start that all over again you really love
- 33:47Speaker 1: to capture authenticity in its raw form totally i love
- 33:52Speaker 1: that yeah yeah.
- 33:54Speaker 4: I mean it's one thing if if it's a uh
- 33:57Speaker 4: you know if it's a scripted edited type thing where
- 34:01Speaker 4: you're trying to get an active performance you know it's
- 34:04Speaker 4: always nice to to give someone opportunity to try different
- 34:08Speaker 4: things in that but I mean, going back to some
- 34:11Speaker 4: of the stuff we did at the radio station, working
- 34:14Speaker 4: with radio guys on camera is fantastic because you guys are...
- 34:21Speaker 4: You're used to the risks of being live and what
- 34:26Speaker 4: that means. And so you never stumble to the point
- 34:31Speaker 4: where you're like, oh, can we cut and restart that?
- 34:34Speaker 2: It's just not in your brains, right?
- 34:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 34:37Speaker 2: So.
- 34:38Speaker 4: that was actually really nice to edit in like those
- 34:41Speaker 4: riding shotgun things where I could just let you guys go.
- 34:44Speaker 4: You'll always find a way to connect it, bring it
- 34:47Speaker 4: back around and tie it all together because you just
- 34:49Speaker 4: have that kind of live, uh, mentality going on.
- 34:54Speaker 1: You know, I said to you, uh, let's, let's, let's
- 34:57Speaker 1: do a little, uh, transparent reveal here. I said to you, God, Jay, um,
- 35:05Speaker 1: I want to start this podcast, but I, I think
- 35:08Speaker 1: I want it to be all audio because I'm a
- 35:10Speaker 1: radio guy. And that's what I'm used to is, you know,
- 35:15Speaker 1: just the art of the imagination and incorporating cameras into,
- 35:24Speaker 1: and we did a little bit of that in the
- 35:26Speaker 1: radio station too. I just remember saying to you, God, Jay,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I freaking hate the camera, man. I just hate it.
- 35:37Speaker 1: And how am I going to do this podcast with
- 35:39Speaker 1: a camera? And you said to me, ignore the camera
- 35:46Speaker 1: and just think of it as a fly on the wall.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Fly on the wall productions. And I'll never forget that.
- 35:55Speaker 1: And you were the one that tried to help me
- 36:01Speaker 1: break that barrier between having a camera and not having
- 36:08Speaker 1: a camera. And there's just something really comfortable about not
- 36:13Speaker 1: having a camera.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:15Speaker 4: And you know what's funny about that, though, is that
- 36:18Speaker 4: you were the best at what we'd call breaking the
- 36:25Speaker 4: fourth wall of In some of those moments where we're driving,
- 36:30Speaker 4: you know, doing the riding shotgun thing, we're driving around
- 36:32Speaker 4: and you're talking and you're not talking to the camera.
- 36:35Speaker 2: You're talking to Frankie. Yeah. It just sounds like you're
- 36:37Speaker 2: an observer as the viewer.
- 36:41Speaker 4: But then you would always find those moments where you
- 36:43Speaker 4: would turn to camera and look right down the barrel
- 36:46Speaker 4: and just say the best thing.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:50Speaker 2: And I would always find those moments to.
- 36:51Speaker 4: Like, cut out and snip and put in that just
- 36:54Speaker 4: kind of, yeah, just broke that fourth wall for the
- 36:57Speaker 4: viewer and just kind of, like, brought them into it.
- 37:00Speaker 2: And you were so good at that.
- 37:01Speaker 4: And I always thought it was kind of funny that
- 37:03Speaker 4: you were both, like, you didn't like the idea of
- 37:06Speaker 4: the camera being there. But at the same point, you
- 37:08Speaker 4: used it to your advantage so well in so many
- 37:12Speaker 4: moments that, yeah.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Tell me about your relationship with G-Stone Motors.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yeah, G. Stone Motors and Stone CDJR down in Middlebury.
- 37:24Speaker 4: It's a longtime client of Moving Pictures Division. And so
- 37:31Speaker 4: Christian and I had done, you know, multiple ads for
- 37:35Speaker 4: them over the years. And they're an incredible family. It's
- 37:41Speaker 4: a family-owned dealership. They're on their third generation of being
- 37:46Speaker 4: family-owned and operated.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Wow.
- 37:48Speaker 4: And they really care about their community. They really want
- 37:57Speaker 4: to kind of lift their community up. They love to
- 38:00Speaker 4: feature other businesses in their ads to try to make
- 38:06Speaker 4: it this very kind of community-strong message to the point
- 38:11Speaker 4: where sometimes it felt like we'd have to remind them, like, hey,
- 38:14Speaker 4: you guys still need to sell cars.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Sell.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Like, let's still make this an ad for you guys.
- 38:20Speaker 4: But that's just who they were. They're just really great people.
- 38:26Speaker 1: You don't get that in Detroit.
- 38:29Speaker 3: No.
- 38:30Speaker 1: You get that in small town New England.
- 38:32Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 4: And for them, it's not about the vehicles. It's about
- 38:36Speaker 4: the people that work there. That's what keeps people coming back.
- 38:41Speaker 4: And so, you know, we'd always kind of build our
- 38:44Speaker 4: ads around that idea.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Set this one up here. Tell us about what you did.
- 38:51Speaker 4: This is, it's a little early in the season to
- 38:55Speaker 4: be looking at it, but it's still worth it. So
- 38:58Speaker 4: this is one of my favorite spots that we ever
- 39:02Speaker 4: produced for G-Stone. This is a holiday ad. The holiday
- 39:06Speaker 4: ads each year, they always really, really enjoyed having like
- 39:12Speaker 4: dedicated holiday ads. that would kind of break the mold
- 39:16Speaker 4: of really not being salesy at all. It was really
- 39:19Speaker 4: just conveying a sweet holiday message to the community. And
- 39:24Speaker 4: um this one particular year we had an idea of
- 39:27Speaker 4: of trying something new and through uh doing some some
- 39:34Speaker 4: planning and research we we just we found these things
- 39:37Speaker 4: that all kind of came together in this perfect creative
- 39:44Speaker 4: little idea and we found this actor that was out
- 39:47Speaker 4: of new hampshire that um does a Santa Claus thing,
- 39:53Speaker 4: and he was brilliant. We found a farm up in
- 39:56Speaker 4: Willoughby that has reindeer and has this really cool vibe.
- 40:03Speaker 4: And we came up with this idea of, you know,
- 40:06Speaker 4: what if we made an ad that was in line
- 40:10Speaker 4: with a lot of the other ads we've done where
- 40:12Speaker 4: it's like a customer testimonial of like, this is why
- 40:15Speaker 4: I buy my vehicle at G-Stone. But in this case,
- 40:19Speaker 4: the customer is someone we all know.
- 40:24Speaker 1: All right. Here we go.
- 40:27Speaker 6: I've been doing this a long time. Well, I'll tell you,
- 40:32Speaker 6: working the farm, it gets you in great shape for
- 40:35Speaker 6: the season. It is hard to get up in the
- 40:39Speaker 6: morning sometimes. But a lot of people believe in me.
- 40:43Speaker 6: And there's always work to be done on the farm.
- 40:50Speaker 6: When I decided to buy a truck, I went to
- 40:52Speaker 6: G-Stone Motors. First of all, they are nice.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I checked.
- 40:58Speaker 7: Twice.
- 40:59Speaker 6: They got me exactly what I wanted when I needed it.
- 41:02Speaker 6: And it came with all the bells and whistles. Those
- 41:05Speaker 6: heated seats, definitely a favorite feature of mine. I travel
- 41:13Speaker 6: halfway around the world to get my truck serviced.
- 41:15Speaker 2: That says a lot.
- 41:18Speaker 6: You can buy a good truck anywhere. But finding a
- 41:21Speaker 6: team of people you can believe in, now that's something special.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Holy crap, man. 60 seconds of you talk about something
- 41:35Speaker 1: that you won't forget. Yeah. Outstanding.
- 41:39Speaker 4: I like that spot a lot and enjoy the being
- 41:48Speaker 4: on that Yeah. And watching him feeding reindeer.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:55Speaker 4: As a, at the time, 33 year old, I had goosebumps.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:02Speaker 2: It's just like, yeah, this is incredible.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Damn fella.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:08Speaker 2: That was a really, really special shoot.
- 42:10Speaker 1: If you're just joining us, Jay Austin is my guest
- 42:16Speaker 1: this morning. Filmmaker, director, Photographer, an incredibly creative mind. One
- 42:24Speaker 1: of the first people that I told that I was
- 42:27Speaker 1: going to start a podcast and you designed my logo.
- 42:32Speaker 1: You gave me some great advice and you helped me,
- 42:38Speaker 1: convinced me to bring the camera into podcasting and say,
- 42:44Speaker 1: you're so, you know, I remember you saying to me,
- 42:50Speaker 1: you're a little bit of a drama queen. You're very... Animated? Animated.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Is that the word? I think that was the word.
- 43:01Speaker 1: You've got to have the camera. What are you hoping
- 43:08Speaker 1: to do right now with J. Austin visual... storytelling. What's
- 43:18Speaker 1: the next chapter for you? What is it that you're
- 43:22Speaker 1: hoping to do this winter?
- 43:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I am.
- 43:29Speaker 4: Very fresh to launching my own company kind of within
- 43:33Speaker 4: the first few weeks here. And I think the goal
- 43:37Speaker 4: is to find clients that know the value of video,
- 43:44Speaker 4: have an interest in doing it, but they're maybe stuck
- 43:49Speaker 4: in a position where they don't have anyone internally that
- 43:53Speaker 4: can make them stuff.
- 43:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:57Speaker 4: And they don't necessarily have a budget to dedicate to,
- 44:00Speaker 4: you know, a full-blown creative agency to come in and
- 44:05Speaker 4: develop some really incredible stuff. So my hope is that
- 44:09Speaker 4: I'm kind of just a one-man band creative partner that
- 44:12Speaker 4: can come in and.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Help share some of my creativity with them and, and
- 44:21Speaker 4: make some really cool content. Um, I think it's, you know,
- 44:25Speaker 4: a lot of it's advertising based still.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Um, sure.
- 44:29Speaker 4: But even in advertising, there's still a lot of creative
- 44:33Speaker 4: things you could do with, you know, building a brand
- 44:36Speaker 4: identity and telling a brand story that, um, has a
- 44:41Speaker 4: lot of value and, um, Yeah.
- 44:44Speaker 2: That's, that's kind of my goal is to, to be
- 44:46Speaker 2: able to do that.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Tell the story of Blair Stone.
- 44:52Speaker 4: Blair is the third generation of the Stone family. Um, and, um,
- 45:00Speaker 4: she is not an employee of the dealership, but she is,
- 45:07Speaker 4: she has become a spokesperson for the dealership and, We
- 45:11Speaker 4: started featuring her in a bunch of the G-Stone ads,
- 45:18Speaker 4: kind of building around this.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Idea of.
- 45:23Speaker 4: She is two things. She's a community member. She works
- 45:28Speaker 4: at the hospital. But she's also a family member for
- 45:32Speaker 4: the G-Stone family. And so there's... she has kind of
- 45:37Speaker 4: a shared interest in both aspects of what G-Stone's all about.
- 45:43Speaker 4: So we featured her in a series of five or
- 45:48Speaker 4: six ads over last year, and I think this next
- 45:53Speaker 4: one you got queued up was kind of one of
- 45:55Speaker 4: the last ones that we did with her that was
- 45:59Speaker 4: just kind of a.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Fun, kind of sentimental....
- 46:06Speaker 4: A little spot that allowed her to have a little
- 46:10Speaker 4: moment with her grandfather and her horse. And, yeah, it
- 46:15Speaker 4: was kind of a nice little story.
- 46:17Speaker 1: How you got the lighting like that coming through the
- 46:24Speaker 1: barn is you've got to time this stuff out. You've
- 46:28Speaker 1: got to get it just right. And, man, that first
- 46:31Speaker 1: shot right there, you just nailed it, dude. beautiful let's
- 46:36Speaker 1: uh let's show it.
- 46:39Speaker 7: You can't fake trust with a 1200 pound animal you
- 46:42Speaker 7: can't force it it.
- 46:44Speaker 6: Has to be earned it's.
- 46:46Speaker 7: A mutual respect a partnership built over time so you
- 46:49Speaker 7: know you can rely on each other my grandfather Gardner
- 46:54Speaker 7: Stone taught me that trust is how you build a
- 46:56Speaker 7: family and a business and that's how we earn your
- 47:00Speaker 7: respect come join the family G-Stone Motors and Stone CDJR,
- 47:05Speaker 7: your trusted family-owned dealerships.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Wow, I just love.
- 47:09Speaker 3: That, man.
- 47:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just a nice, sweet little 30-second message, right?
- 47:14Speaker 1: 30 seconds.
- 47:15Speaker 4: It gives you kind of the warm, fuzzy feelings of,
- 47:21Speaker 4: you know, sure, you might even forget the fact that,
- 47:27Speaker 4: you know, they're selling vehicles at the end of the day,
- 47:29Speaker 4: but really it's about... You know, the core message behind
- 47:33Speaker 4: that ad is trust.
- 47:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:35Speaker 4: And, you know, people want to trust in the process
- 47:41Speaker 4: when they're buying a vehicle.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Yep. They also want family.
- 47:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 4: And, you know, it's a simple little message, little metaphor
- 47:49Speaker 4: like that about building a relationship with a horse and
- 47:53Speaker 4: that whole thing.
- 47:53Speaker 2: It just... Yeah. It's a nice way of sharing their message.
- 47:59Speaker 1: There are... and I don't need to tell you this,
- 48:03Speaker 1: you already know, there are so many incredible stories that
- 48:09Speaker 1: are right under our nose. Literally, on the other side
- 48:15Speaker 1: of that glass right there. And they pass in front
- 48:20Speaker 1: of me all day. Some of them are able to
- 48:26Speaker 1: sit and share just a barely scratching the surface, a
- 48:31Speaker 1: smidgen of their story on that couch right there. But
- 48:37Speaker 1: all I can do is have a conversation live and
- 48:44Speaker 1: share as much of that story as possible and paint
- 48:48Speaker 1: that picture. You bring it to an entirely different level,
- 48:54Speaker 1: which is something that, you know, I'll find myself driving
- 48:58Speaker 1: down the street saying, oh, my God, Jay could do
- 49:03Speaker 1: a 15-minute mini doc on just this alone.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Is that what you're hoping to do? You're hoping to
- 49:11Speaker 1: continue to sell stories?
- 49:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:15Speaker 4: I think certainly that docu-style kind of plays out through
- 49:19Speaker 4: all of my work. whether it be for advertising or
- 49:22Speaker 4: longer-form content.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Sure.
- 49:25Speaker 2: If there's a good story, I want to help tell it.
- 49:28Speaker 1: You know, there's so many hard-working Vermonters.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:33Speaker 1: The farms, man, it's like I remember... When the news hit,
- 49:40Speaker 1: I was covering it on Froggy. When, for the first
- 49:44Speaker 1: time ever, Vermont had broken the 1,000 dairy farm threshold.
- 49:53Speaker 1: We were officially under 1,000 farms. Now it's somewhere, I think,
- 50:03Speaker 1: John Rogers was in here, and I think he was
- 50:05Speaker 1: saying it's somewhere around 430 maybe statewide but these are
- 50:14Speaker 1: the types of stories that you're going after hard working
- 50:19Speaker 1: Vermonters who are doing something not because they have to
- 50:25Speaker 1: but because they love what they do.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Yeah and you know.
- 50:33Speaker 4: One source of inspiration I find in some of this
- 50:40Speaker 4: storytelling content is actually Yeti Coolers.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:47Speaker 4: They have a film series called Yeti Presents and they
- 50:52Speaker 4: feature stories from all over the world. But they're just
- 50:56Speaker 4: these like little mini documentaries and they're done so well
- 51:03Speaker 4: and they feel nothing like an ad for a cooler
- 51:10Speaker 4: or a mug. Uh, but it's Yeti recognizing that there's
- 51:17Speaker 4: great stories to be told. They can be a part
- 51:20Speaker 4: of it.
- 51:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 4: And so, you know, a lot of the stories have
- 51:24Speaker 4: some great product placement that doesn't feel forced, but it
- 51:28Speaker 4: just is, you know, some of the, my favorite ones
- 51:30Speaker 4: that I can think of are, um, there's one that's
- 51:33Speaker 4: over in Maine. That's, uh, uh, multi-generational, uh, lobster fishing
- 51:39Speaker 4: family and, uh, the female boat captain, um, out in
- 51:44Speaker 4: the water. And, you know, it's like, yeah, a Yeti
- 51:47Speaker 4: cooler on a lobster boat feels at home. It doesn't
- 51:50Speaker 4: feel forced at all.
- 51:51Speaker 7: Right.
- 51:51Speaker 4: And so you don't even pay attention to that. You're
- 51:53Speaker 4: just dialed into this story. But I think what's interesting
- 51:57Speaker 4: about it is that Yeti is giving it a platform
- 52:00Speaker 4: and a place for it to live in an audience. And, uh,
- 52:04Speaker 4: it allows it to be an, uh, economically viable story
- 52:09Speaker 4: to tell.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:10Speaker 4: You know, it doesn't have to, you know, live in
- 52:13Speaker 4: a film festival circuit or, or something like that beyond
- 52:17Speaker 4: a much bigger scale. It can, it can be used
- 52:19Speaker 4: as advertising essentially, or just, you know, shareable content.
- 52:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 52:25Speaker 4: Um, and I, I think that there's more opportunity to
- 52:30Speaker 4: do that. And I think that in our state and
- 52:33Speaker 4: in our region in new England, yep. there are a
- 52:38Speaker 4: lot of opportunities to do things like that. And so
- 52:41Speaker 4: it's a matter of finding the right companies that are
- 52:45Speaker 4: willing to, or see the value in putting their name
- 52:49Speaker 4: to that.
- 52:50Speaker 5: Yes.
- 52:50Speaker 2: And say, these are the stories that we.
- 52:52Speaker 4: Want to own and support and, you know, turn the
- 52:56Speaker 4: volume up on to, to kind of support their own message.
- 53:00Speaker 1: You have to, you have to, you have to, Work
- 53:04Speaker 1: with someone who also gets it.
- 53:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:09Speaker 1: And if they don't get it like you do as
- 53:13Speaker 1: a creative mind, you have to be able to say,
- 53:19Speaker 1: just trust me.
- 53:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Just trust me.
- 53:22Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 53:23Speaker 1: And leave it up to me. I got the vision,
- 53:27Speaker 1: and you can make... You can execute that vision. You
- 53:31Speaker 1: can make it come to reality with... your editing, your music,
- 53:36Speaker 1: your lighting, it all has to work. It all has
- 53:39Speaker 1: to come together.
- 53:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I think.
- 53:45Speaker 4: Trust is obviously a big part of a company wanting
- 53:49Speaker 4: to tell a story like that.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Sure.
- 53:52Speaker 4: Because there's always the desire for that strong call to
- 53:57Speaker 4: action and intent behind any kind of piece they're going
- 54:00Speaker 4: to put money behind where they want to see some
- 54:02Speaker 4: kind of tick in the meter of like, okay, this
- 54:08Speaker 4: is working for us. Um, but you know, I think
- 54:11Speaker 4: there's a lot of, a lot of brands and businesses
- 54:14Speaker 4: around here that the awareness is the real value of
- 54:20Speaker 4: like having a name that people begin to trust more
- 54:26Speaker 4: and more and, and see more and more as really
- 54:28Speaker 4: being kind of woven into the fabric of a community by, by,
- 54:33Speaker 4: telling stories like this that, um, yeah, there's real value there.
- 54:37Speaker 1: There's something that that's telling me, and maybe I'm, uh,
- 54:40Speaker 1: I'm wrong that where I remember you made something that
- 54:44Speaker 1: really made you think twice about recycling. Um, but it's
- 54:49Speaker 1: just going way back to your work with, with Christian,
- 54:53Speaker 1: but there was also, um, and stop me if this is,
- 54:56Speaker 1: jogging something for you, but, um, you know, just making
- 54:59Speaker 1: you the call to action, making you think and rethink, um,
- 55:03Speaker 1: things about your life and your, your daily habits, but also, um,
- 55:08Speaker 1: wasn't it darn tough that you did some, some shooting.
- 55:11Speaker 4: We did some stuff with darn tough, actually. I mean,
- 55:13Speaker 4: specifically on recycling, um, do you remember there was a,
- 55:18Speaker 4: we did a piece for Casella.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Well, that's what it is.
- 55:22Speaker 4: That was like a, a little kind of, uh, family, uh,
- 55:27Speaker 4: history piece on the founder, Doug Casella. And it was
- 55:34Speaker 4: a really fascinating look at the company and their operations
- 55:41Speaker 4: and the founding of it and how it started as
- 55:44Speaker 4: just this kid out of high school with his pickup
- 55:49Speaker 4: truck going door to door and turned into what's one
- 55:53Speaker 4: of the probably top three or four largest.
- 55:58Speaker 2: You know, waste companies in the country.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:02Speaker 4: And it was great to interact with the family members
- 56:08Speaker 4: and hear more of their story and learn more about it,
- 56:11Speaker 4: spend time at, you know, going to some of the
- 56:15Speaker 4: dumps and the landfills and walking around and kind of
- 56:21Speaker 4: just thinking about, like, you know, I'm part of this problem.
- 56:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Like you can't ignore.
- 56:28Speaker 4: It's like these, you know, going to a landfill that's
- 56:30Speaker 4: kind of in my own backyard and thinking about like,
- 56:33Speaker 4: you know, yeah, that wrapper that I threw away last
- 56:36Speaker 4: week is, is all part of this. And, um, yeah,
- 56:40Speaker 4: those things are, are really interesting. Some of those life
- 56:43Speaker 4: experiences where you get to take a peek behind the curtain, uh,
- 56:47Speaker 4: really can change your perspective on, on a lot of things.
- 56:53Speaker 1: You know, um, I want to close out, uh, this
- 56:58Speaker 1: morning because yesterday, uh, I, I promised that I would
- 57:02Speaker 1: let folks know what I've got for stores that have,
- 57:08Speaker 1: I've had people reach out to me, say, you ought
- 57:10Speaker 1: to go visit this store, go visit that country store.
- 57:13Speaker 1: They got an incredible story. Um, amazing history, our Vermont
- 57:18Speaker 1: country stores. So I decided to do a Vermont country
- 57:23Speaker 1: store tour. And, um, decided that I was going to
- 57:28Speaker 1: do 20 stores in 20 days. Not sure exactly what
- 57:35Speaker 1: day this thing is going to launch, but I'm guessing
- 57:39Speaker 1: real soon, probably the very beginning of October, which is Thursday.
- 57:47Speaker 1: But it's coming soon. And I've had followers tell me,
- 57:51Speaker 1: got to go to this store, got to go to
- 57:53Speaker 1: that store. Best whoopie pie on the planet. The stores
- 57:58Speaker 1: that I have chosen so far, I've got 15 out
- 58:02Speaker 1: of 20. I'm looking for five more, and your suggestion, too.
- 58:06Speaker 1: But Dudley's, I'm going to go to Dudley's, the Barnard
- 58:11Speaker 1: General Store, Craftsbury General, the Roost, which is the old
- 58:17Speaker 1: Floyd's store, Newberry Village Store, North Tunbridge, Northeast Kingdom Country Store,
- 58:26Speaker 1: the old Bailey Store, the Elmore Store, F.H. Gillingham &
- 58:30Speaker 1: Sons in Woodstock. I'm going to go to South Woodstock
- 58:34Speaker 1: Country Store. I'm going to go to the Groton Forest
- 58:37Speaker 1: Country Store, Marshfield Village, Harry's up in Cabot, Harry's Hardware,
- 58:47Speaker 1: the Maple Corner Store, Um, I'm going to go to
- 58:52Speaker 1: weights river general. I'm going to go to Hastings. I'm
- 58:56Speaker 1: going to go to Willie's up in Greensboro. Um, I'm
- 59:01Speaker 1: planning on going to the Warren store. Um, but I'm
- 59:06Speaker 1: looking for a couple of more here to, to make
- 59:08Speaker 1: it 20. He got it. ideas?
- 59:11Speaker 4: Well, I got a, it's probably maybe a little bit
- 59:14Speaker 4: outside of your, uh, the range you're looking at, but
- 59:18Speaker 4: Shelburne country store. Um, my cousin Carmen runs it and, um,
- 59:25Speaker 4: it's a great classic, classic country store.
- 59:29Speaker 1: It's on my list.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:31Speaker 1: 1859 it was built.
- 59:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 59:33Speaker 2: And it feels like it.
- 59:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 2: But it is cool.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Creaky floors?
- 59:37Speaker 2: Creaky floors, but it's still got all the charm. Yeah,
- 59:42Speaker 2: there's probably a belt. I'm trying to think now. Is
- 59:43Speaker 2: there a belt?
- 59:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:45Speaker 4: And yeah, no, it's a great shop. And I'm actually,
- 59:51Speaker 4: so I'm right now in the works of getting some
- 59:54Speaker 4: 2027 Vermont Landscape.
- 59:57Speaker 2: Calendars printed, uh, locally that.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: Is going to be for sale at, uh, some different
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: local shops, but, uh, you'll find those at Shelburne Country Store.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Will you get some here? I'll sell them right here
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: from the studio.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Absolutely. I'll bring some by.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Snowsville. Oh my God. I forgot about Snowsville.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Did you say Hastings?
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: I did say Hastings.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I love Hastings.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Up at Joe's Pond.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Incredible ice cream.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: Um, yeah. Um, I want to do some work with you, man. Uh, I'm,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure exactly. I mean, you know, me, I'm all,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I'm freaking all over the road, dude. I got too
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: much going on, you know, upstairs in the noggin. But, um,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: how can folks reach you if they have an idea, um,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: of something where they want you to bring their story
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: to life? We'll drop your, your cell phone here.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Um, But what's the website where people can watch and
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: see what you're up to?
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Yeah, jaustinpictures.com. Check it out.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: I've got a little sizzle reel on there that's kind
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: of some of my highlights from the past 10 years of, well,
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: even more, more like 12 years of filming stuff locally
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: and Um, I've got, uh, you know, photography is another
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: kind of big part of, of what it is that
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: I offer. I love video, but my, my first true
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: passion is photography. And so I've got a bunch of
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: my photography featured on there. Um, but yeah, that would,
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: that would be a good place to check out.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: I said to you a million years ago when Lily
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: was three, um, maybe younger, you got it. You, Please
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: get a picture of my little girl.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: We went to the Waterbury Reservoir.
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: You timed this sucker right on the nose, man. Peak foliage.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Peak foliage.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Late afternoon glow.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Perfect sunlight.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: You snapped it. You got her. To smile, to show
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: a little bit of her character.
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: And you snapped it, dude, and you nailed it. I
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: cried when I saw the pictures. They have been blown
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: up into canvas shots that have been hanging on our
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: walls in our living room since.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Not one.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: But several of the pictures that you took.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember that.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: They're still there. I love those.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: I love those shots. Yeah, that was just a great day.
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: Worked out so well. Lily was great. She had fun
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: playing in the leaves.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: I remember that.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Man, that was.
