Transcript
- 0:16Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon.
- 0:18On a Wednesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon and
- 0:22Ken Miller kick things off for the next 6 hour block of
- 0:24programming. We appreciate you starting your
- 0:27afternoon with us. Wherever you are listening in
- 0:29the state of Iowa, we are great world anywhere for that matter.
- 0:32Grateful that you are. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:35program. the US Open begins tomorrow at Oakmont.
- 0:39I cannot wait. Matt Rudy, formerly of Golf
- 0:42Digest, he's covered multiple majors in his career, still
- 0:47writing golf, but he will join us at 12:30.
- 0:50We'll get his thoughts on what we can expect.
- 0:52Carnage. That's what we're hoping for.
- 0:55We'll talk to Matt Rudy on the US Open coming up at 12:30.
- 0:59Cappy normally Wednesday, but his station has their golf event
- 1:03today, so Cappy will push back to tomorrow in his place.
- 1:07David Eichelt is going to join us.
- 1:09The latest on Iowa. How I was going about the house
- 1:12ruling, by the way, saw the first lawsuit fell.
- 1:15It was filed this morning. Title 9 is the first one to hit
- 1:20the books, first one that we've seen publicly.
- 1:22Anyways, a group of female athletes is banding together as
- 1:25they don't want to be left behind or they're not happy the
- 1:27way it's going. So the first lawsuit against the
- 1:30house settlement is officially in the books.
- 1:33They will do that and then we're going to talk to our old friend.
- 1:37For those of you new to the station or listening throughout
- 1:40the state of Iowa, Jim Brinson, who who has been in media for.
- 1:46A long time a. Long time he called Michael
- 1:47Jordan's first game as a bull as as it was with the Wizards in
- 1:52the 70s. Did the IT is old, Princeton's
- 1:56old. And he doesn't look it 'cause I
- 1:58just saw a picture not too long ago out in Arizona where he's
- 2:00work. Working still.
- 2:02Yeah. And he looks great.
- 2:03No, he does. And he was my partner for a long
- 2:06time here, around four years or so here on kicks.
- 2:09You know, did afternoon drive from 2000 and I want to say 11
- 2:13to 2014. Still the greatest walk off
- 2:16ever. He's up on Friday, he said.
- 2:19I can't remember what the Cyclone kicker was.
- 2:22Cole Netten. Might be Cole Netten going to
- 2:24hit a, a field goal last second field goal to win it for Iowa
- 2:29State and then he never came back to work on Monday and
- 2:34didn't tell a soul that he wasn't coming back to work.
- 2:36Speaking of last second, and this just dawned on me.
- 2:39So there was a there's a betting market out there and I don't
- 2:42want to linger on this because it was game one of the NBA
- 2:45Finals, but there was a market a buzzer beater.
- 2:47I think it was DraftKings to put up maybe DraftKings or FanDuel a
- 2:51buzzer beater. You could bet someone to make a
- 2:53buzzer beater in this series. Henry Halliburton was 41 to 1
- 2:59shot, went in with .3 seconds left.
- 3:01Not a buzzer beater. Not a buzzer beater, but don't
- 3:04you? I mean, there's bad beats and
- 3:08we've all have experienced them. If we bet on sports, this one
- 3:12might have been enough to say, you know what, enough is enough.
- 3:14I'm going to find another hobby. No they won't.
- 3:16No, of course they won't. But but Can you imagine 41 to
- 3:20one? You've got Halliburton to hit a
- 3:21buzzer beater, .3 of a second left and not a buzzy beater.
- 3:28Just needed it to hit the back iron, go 20 feet in the air and
- 3:31then drop in. Really, or take an extra half a
- 3:34step or whatever it was. But anyways, so that's what's
- 3:38coming up on our program. We look forward to that.
- 3:40We look forward to a game #3 tonight.
- 3:43Indianapolis is the scene. It's a great little downtown
- 3:47area the the square in Indianapolis with game bridge
- 3:51and with the the home of the Colts.
- 3:52What's it called again? Changes arts What's the RCA?
- 3:55Lucas Oil. Lucas Oil.
- 3:56Thank you. You know, within spinning
- 3:58distance of one another. And Game 3 will be played
- 4:02tonight. The road team is favoured.
- 4:05The series is 1 apiece. And is it just the fact that
- 4:10Oklahoma City was such a dominating performance in game
- 4:14#2 that we just assumed that, you know, there's just March
- 4:17into victory? It's inevitable.
- 4:18Is that part of it? Or that it's just, you know,
- 4:20we've seen enough. They're just better.
- 4:22Kind of both I I think in a way because even with the win by the
- 4:26Pacers in game one, there's another one of those fluky
- 4:29natures as it sat between 8 and 13 points.
- 4:32It felt like for like an hour it was just in that range.
- 4:35And from my perspective, I was just waiting for the Thunder to
- 4:38hit that accelerator and stretch it out to 20 instead of went the
- 4:41other way. But the Thunder for those first
- 4:44what, 363840 minutes we're keeping them arms distance.
- 4:49Then what we saw in Game 2, they are just better now.
- 4:53What Carlisle did right away in his post game press conference,
- 4:57saying we need you to the fans, they're already going to be
- 4:59charged up. First game in 21st finals and
- 5:01what, 20? 525 years basketball crazy.
- 5:05As great of a basketball building as there is, the
- 5:08proximity, everything that is involved, this is as good of an
- 5:11environment as you're going to find in the NBA.
- 5:13Truly is. And they need it.
- 5:15I mean, they need it to be special.
- 5:17They need every single little edge that they can get.
- 5:21They have to have it tonight, probably just to hang around.
- 5:24That's that's where it is. I mean, that's what it is to.
- 5:27Be kind of feel you're right. Trent, I'm with you.
- 5:29What's more likely, this thing ends in five or we even get to a
- 5:31Game 6 and you're talking about 3 consecutive victories from the
- 5:36Thunder or one win from Indiana? I say the latter, yeah.
- 5:40Or the the forward. Excuse me, the the three with
- 5:43Thunder I think is more likely than the Pacers just getting one
- 5:46of the next three. That's how I.
- 5:48When would Game 5 would be when for them?
- 5:51It's Monday. It's Monday.
- 5:53It's. Scheduled.
- 5:53Yes. OK, so at least it gets us into
- 5:57next week a little bit of a, a dip, a toe.
- 5:59In and we will be there. We have That one's locked in, so
- 6:02it's. Hockey.
- 6:03And yes. But it'll be Saturday because
- 6:05Game 3 is to game 4 is tomorrow and it's quick turn around.
- 6:11They fly across the they fly across two countries and play on
- 6:14Saturday nights. So back in Edmonton.
- 6:16So for that one. But that's what's coming up as
- 6:20far as the winter sports as that we are seemingly into our
- 6:24precious final days of both of those sports.
- 6:27So basketball, college basketball has made some news
- 6:31with some rule changes. One of the rule changes is
- 6:34apparently it's kind of buried in the in the release is the
- 6:37fact that if the men's game is on the cusp of going to quarters
- 6:43and will join, well, everybody else with their exception, they
- 6:48play 220 minute halves. Everybody else breaks it down
- 6:51into quarters. Are you for this?
- 6:53Do you like the fact that it's kind of a stand alone two 20s?
- 6:56What does this do? I guess it's the the sense of
- 6:59urgency the two for one at the end of the first quarter instead
- 7:03of just having a once in 20 minutes, you would have that
- 7:05scenario potentially a couple of times times.
- 7:08Is that the big push behind this or what do you what do you see
- 7:11as as it's gaining momentum? Well, it's just everybody else
- 7:14does it. I mean, it's the way that the
- 7:16game is played everywhere else, every other level, and probably
- 7:18the way that it should be. Why men's basketball was the
- 7:22last holdout, I have no idea. The justification out.
- 7:24Because I don't remember the NBA being without quarters.
- 7:28No, not at all. And I'm guessing the women's
- 7:31game was without quarter. I mean Went was good.
- 7:33Quarters, I think it's about 10 years ago that they changed.
- 7:35Oh, so it's been recently, relatively recently.
- 7:38To the game, sorry. That they changed it and went
- 7:40into it, but it's just it's cleaner the more opportunity for
- 7:44end game situations and coaches. And I remember when it changed
- 7:47in the women's side, and that was one thing I think maybe it
- 7:50might have been Bluter mentioned is they had to work on end of
- 7:54game situations a lot more. But it helped them for real end
- 7:57of game situations because you work on it because now instead
- 8:00of 1/2 and equal weight, you're doubling the amount of time that
- 8:03you have to do it with it. You're practicing it more.
- 8:05And then she said that felt like they were more equipped at end
- 8:09game situations that they felt better at least going into it
- 8:12doesn't mean you're going to make every shot, things like
- 8:14that, but you just work out it more because they're going to be
- 8:17playing it a whole lot more. It's a welcome change.
- 8:20It needs to happen. But I have one thing for you,
- 8:23and it goes back to the beginning of the week
- 8:25conversation as it pertains to college athletics.
- 8:27And it's almost always football that we're talking about, right?
- 8:30Football, football, football as football, football, however,
- 8:35basketball. So I'm going to paint this
- 8:37scenario for you. University of Alabama, they got
- 8:41their, to make it easy. They're $20 million and 7580% of
- 8:46that is going to go to the football program.
- 8:50Basketball program's pretty good.
- 8:52Nade Oates has done a hell of a job.
- 8:54He's going to have, of that 20, about 3 to 4 million that he'll
- 8:58be able to play around with and the less the rest goes to and
- 9:01baseball and whatever else they want to invest in.
- 9:03Well, women's, yeah. So Nade Oates, he's got a guy he
- 9:08absolutely loves and out of what we have, we can offer you
- 9:13$750,000. And here he is, battling against
- 9:19the Creighton Blue Jays. Who have no football.
- 9:23There you go. They still get $20.5 million.
- 9:27So you're looking at Big E schools to make a resurgence
- 9:30against? Is is that where we're trending
- 9:33that the Big East is suddenly a number one in college basketball
- 9:38because. That's a layer that I don't
- 9:40think has been looked at enough. And suddenly Creighton and
- 9:43Xavier and Seton Hall and Villanova and on and on and on,
- 9:48they have a huge leg up both on the men's side and if they want
- 9:53to, on the women's side. Maybe just something to filter
- 9:57away into the back of your mind as it pertains to the basket.
- 10:00Yeah, and it's going to be fascinating to see how the
- 10:01monies get gets divvied up. What's Kentucky going to do?
- 10:04Kentucky is a basketball school, right?
- 10:06And we love Stoops, but we like the football program.
- 10:09But it's a basketball school. Are they going to cut it?
- 10:11And, well, we're only going to give 10 to football.
- 10:13You just wonder. How far behind are you going to
- 10:15fall in football in the SEC when you're not equipping yourself at
- 10:19the fullest extent? Duke What are they going to do
- 10:22right? It's been a decent football
- 10:24program now for 20 years. Yeah, What's Belichick going to
- 10:27do? Well, we can turn to Jordan.
- 10:29You're going to get her thoughts before anything.
- 10:31But North Carolina's pretty good or used to be basketball.
- 10:33These basketball schools. Oh, it's going to be something
- 10:37to watch. Trent.
- 10:37That's an excellent point. And 1 I had not even popped into
- 10:41my head. I hadn't read that anywhere.
- 10:43If you came up with this, full marks to you.
- 10:46But this is brilliant. Big East is about to take its
- 10:49place in the Upper if you don't play football.
- 10:51St. John's.
- 10:53Well, St. John's a good spot booster wise.
- 10:55Now with what's the name, Mike Ropoli, Who invented vitamin
- 11:00water and what's the other one, protein.
- 11:03I don't know what it's called, but anyways, he's beyond
- 11:06wealthy. And he invested this year and.
- 11:09He invested this. Year and had one of the most
- 11:10successful years in the last quarter or century.
- 11:14Basketball schools without football.
- 11:16Basketball. All the.
- 11:17Money. They don't have to divvy it up
- 11:19to the football program that's normally going to, you know damn
- 11:22well it's going to take the majority of it.
- 11:24I don't know the answer, but it's certainly be something to
- 11:26watch. And I'm guessing that the sports
- 11:30books will adjust accordingly, right?
- 11:32Because all of a sudden these Big East teams with all this
- 11:35money, Big East, you're going to the Big E schools are going to
- 11:38be able to pick and choose the talent.
- 11:40Absolutely. Right.
- 11:41I mean, if it plays out in this fashion and they're able now,
- 11:45again, collectives are still going to be a thing.
- 11:48I just can't wait to also see when that first NILL deal goes
- 11:52in. And here's another part of it.
- 11:54And certainly with basketball. So JT topping, the reports are
- 11:58$4 million. Yep.
- 12:01Well, you put that in your bill Jankowich Ford.
- 12:06Yeah. And Dankowich, Sorry.
- 12:11And you put in that $4 million figure and it comes back red.
- 12:14No, that's not happening. Right.
- 12:16Well, what's going to happen, we're going to go right back to
- 12:19what it was. That's.
- 12:20What my fear is. Under the.
- 12:22Table unless the unless it's somehow they police it.
- 12:25Are they going to? So we're just going back to the
- 12:28old era. I think we are where the.
- 12:29Shadiness will this is gonna be under the this.
- 12:32Is what it was it Bloom we had, I don't know who we were talking
- 12:34to, might have been Brent Bloom at the time we're talking, maybe
- 12:38not. But regardless, the, the SEC is
- 12:41not as dominant as it once was since everybody can pay now,
- 12:44right? If the SEC once again starts to
- 12:47climb up that ladder and we're seeing dominance, well, how are
- 12:50they doing it, right? It's back to the good old days,
- 12:53if you will, in the it's that golden handshake.
- 12:56It's that bag man that's going to make an appearance.
- 13:00It's got to be police, Trent. But who's going to police it?
- 13:03Well, it's not the NCAA. That's one thing that we.
- 13:05Do I guess that's good? But who's going to I mean, and
- 13:09then who's going to tattle on who, right, right.
- 13:12Schools are going to be, you know, ratting on each other.
- 13:15God, the era that we're in, this was a good idea.
- 13:19I don't think anybody foresaw it getting to the level that it is.
- 13:23I mean, some of the basketball players, they're nice players,
- 13:26but they're not multi million dollar players.
- 13:30JT Toppen, if he was a free agent in the NBA, yeah, he
- 13:33wouldn't get $4 million. He wouldn't get 2, right?
- 13:37He'd be a minimum salary guy, yet he's going to get that.
- 13:41At Texas Tech, Yeah. How much money Hunter Dixon
- 13:44made, right. Dickinson made millions of
- 13:47dollars. And it just keeps increasing,
- 13:49increasing. And suddenly and now that guy
- 13:51this year, that kid that is making $1,000,000 and next year
- 13:55with the new rim of you know what?
- 13:57You got to take cut and pay dude, sorry.
- 13:59We, we can only, you can only get 250.
- 14:02Think that's going to work out well because all of a sudden
- 14:04he's going to be calling around and saying, hey, how can I get
- 14:06that $1,000,000 again here? Well, I know.
- 14:09What's your first call? I would make Big E school.
- 14:13Right, St. John's.
- 14:14Whoever doesn't have football, right?
- 14:16You know, Villanova, you want to get back to the top of the heap
- 14:20under the table right back. Boy, oh boy, oh boy.
- 14:23Fascinating stuff. We'll see how it plays out, but
- 14:26it's certainly something to watch.
- 14:27All right, have you have you zeroed in on the US Open?
- 14:30Matt Rudy coming up at the bottom of the hour?
- 14:32Obviously a lot of golf conversation in that period of
- 14:35time, but have you zeroed in on the golf?
- 14:40Who's the player that every Harris?
- 14:42What's Harris's? Harris English.
- 14:43Harris English. Yeah, if you consider yourself a
- 14:46golf sharp, if you don't have anybody Harris English this
- 14:49week, you are not. Then I got him at 78 to 1.
- 14:53He was 100 to one at some places, 125 to one.
- 14:56Somebody's claiming they have. A so circa was the best that it
- 14:58was as of about 8:00 this morning.
- 15:01That was at 78 to 1. So why is he?
- 15:04Why is he the steam this week? He is a guy that hits a lot of
- 15:08the metrics that we talked about earlier in the week.
- 15:10Very good. Getting up and down has a
- 15:12necessary part. I wouldn't say that he's an
- 15:16elite level guy, but he's fine in that.
- 15:18It's it's the up and down nature, it's the accuracy and
- 15:21the distance with drives. Those are kind of the metrics
- 15:22put together. That is a reason for it.
- 15:25The putting of this is going to be interesting because we don't
- 15:29know speed wise what it's going to be.
- 15:31Did they get rain? Did you see there was talk?
- 15:34No, the rain is apparently going to be Saturday's the weather
- 15:38day, but apparently they have some kind of drying system.
- 15:41They don't think this is going to be a major issue if and do
- 15:44they, if indeed they do get weather.
- 15:45Trent, I know that you're not on Twitter as much as I am and I
- 15:49wish I was in your shoes, but I can't help but I I saw
- 15:53throughout the day yesterday, guys 130 yards off the green,
- 15:58rolling the ball underhanded or putting the ball and it goes.
- 16:02That's the way you have to attack.
- 16:04It's going to be the British Open plate over here in a lot of
- 16:07ways. Without the wind, without having
- 16:09to hit those kind of punch shots in there, but the ability to
- 16:12stop the ball to hit a high and it just stop and it's not
- 16:15happening. It's not happening on this
- 16:17course. Coupled with the way that these
- 16:20greens have been reconfigured now and they're the table tops
- 16:22and they're going to fall off and you're going to see those
- 16:24balls that are there. It's.
- 16:25Punishing. And you hit it at the pin, well,
- 16:29it's going to go by 20-30 forty feet and then it's going to hit
- 16:32the backside of that green and that's going to jet down the
- 16:34backside and you're going to have a full pitch coming back
- 16:36the other way. Not a little chip to get back up
- 16:39there, a full pitch to get up there.
- 16:41Going to be those kind of I can't wait for it.
- 16:43There's going to be some unfair guys.
- 16:47One thing that I have my concern with Scotty Shuffler, I do want
- 16:50to put this because Scotty's part of my card.
- 16:51I think he has to be. However, one thing with him is
- 16:56if you go back in the past and when he has taking a downturn,
- 17:00when he's had those tournaments where it just doesn't click, you
- 17:03could a lot of times point back to him not getting a good he get
- 17:07getting a bad break. I should say when something
- 17:09negative something. That gets in his head.
- 17:11Is that what you're saying? Unfair really happens.
- 17:14Okay, unfair. There are a couple of.
- 17:16Times that is. I can't believe this happened to
- 17:18me. What are the odds this happened?
- 17:20Right? Not unfair that I they OK
- 17:22there's something somebody. Didn't hit a sprinkler head.
- 17:24Yeah, you're, it's an unbelievable, you hit a great
- 17:27shot, but you're in somebody's divot, those kind of things.
- 17:29And in the past, a few times that is.
- 17:32But it's not to say that he's mentally weak 'cause he's not.
- 17:34I mean, the guy was arrested and he went out there and fired at
- 17:37the PGA a year ago in Louisville.
- 17:39It's it's not that, but there have been times when it's not
- 17:43clicking and there's some things that just aren't going his way
- 17:48that it can crater, that it can happen to him a little.
- 17:50So just one thing to put in your back of your mind, because this
- 17:53course is unforgiving. This course, there are going to
- 17:56be great shots that you hit and you are not going to be
- 17:58rewarded. And if that happens with
- 18:01Scheffler, don't be surprised if he turns in a bad round.
- 18:04Now, he can still turn in a bad round and still be fine too.
- 18:07What's it going to be closer to last 2 * 4 under or five over
- 18:13the winning score? Closer to I, I, I'm going to go
- 18:16even par, so I'm going to I think.
- 18:18The winner's over par, over par. I think so like not just
- 18:21significantly over, maybe even one over something like that I
- 18:24think could win the golf tournament.
- 18:26I listen to I think they've interviewed 5 five players that
- 18:30are playing this weekend and the question they were asked is if
- 18:33your handicap is is 18, so essentially play bogey golf,
- 18:38what would what, what is what somebody that the, the the 18
- 18:42handicap, what would they shooter don't want?
- 18:45And the answers were unbelievable. 14150.
- 18:48That was out there, yeah, 12140. Oh, there's I I'm about that.
- 18:52I'm not quite a boogie golfer 'cause I don't play as much
- 18:54anymore. My short game's terrible.
- 18:56Got to play with my stepbrother last night.
- 18:57That was fun. And the short game.
- 18:58Where'd you play TCI? That my my game was not about
- 19:02you. He's at a golf league out there
- 19:05and needed to fill it. So I got to fill it for my
- 19:07definite last night. But I'm about a bogey golfer,
- 19:11probably more like a 22 handicap if you put me on that course.
- 19:15Not even playing from the tips, playing from up tease, though,
- 19:18There's no way I could play break 150 there.
- 19:20There's not a way, because that's not.
- 19:22Fun to me. The, the short game part of it,
- 19:25I just think of when I go out and play, yeah, I'll hit a good
- 19:28pitch. I'll I can't put on greens like
- 19:31that. I've never, none of us, no
- 19:32amateur golfer has put it on anything close to this.
- 19:36And think of the amount of times that there's no picking it up at
- 19:404 foot and your buddy now you got to finish everything because
- 19:43these ones out. In fact, 150 for a bogey golfer
- 19:46that might be a little bit too low.
- 19:48This number finishing everything out even from up Tees where
- 19:51you're at another 25 yards per tee.
- 19:54I don't see it. I and I would love to see what
- 19:56it actually was, everything playing all the way through.
- 19:58Oh, it's going to be a fascinating tournament.
- 20:00So I don't know the answer to this.
- 20:03I'm going to ask you because you bet golf every week and and I
- 20:05seldom do. There, there's a there.
- 20:08It's certainly becoming more popular than ever and maybe it
- 20:11was around for a period of time. I don't recall it because again,
- 20:14I don't get into it like you do, but there's every single
- 20:17tournament this year that Scheffler is in.
- 20:19There's a without Scotty market, you can bet the tournament and
- 20:23that's and Scotty's not part of it.
- 20:26Is this new? Not new, it's been around for
- 20:28quite a while. But who was it before?
- 20:31Did Tiger have this? A lot of times you would see
- 20:33these markets and he just take out like maybe the top five
- 20:36guys. Either five of them you can do
- 20:38single but. There was also that it would be
- 20:41everybody but Scotty, everybody but Rory, everybody but and like
- 20:45five guys that they kind of make that market, OK, that'd be there
- 20:48or take all five of the top guys out, right and then everybody
- 20:51after that. So those markets so?
- 20:53This isn't just a Scotty special.
- 20:55No, it's not, but I think it's become more prevalent because of
- 20:59his domination. There's more money at ESPN bet
- 21:01been wagered on Scotty Scheffler to win than every other golfer
- 21:04combines. There's been more money.
- 21:07I think it's DraftKings bet on Rory McIlroy to miss the cut
- 21:12than anybody else, really. Yes, Rory McIlroy is the steam
- 21:16to miss the cut. Jeff called us yesterday, glued
- 21:19us in about, you know, his lack of preparation.
- 21:22It does seem he's a different cat since he got the master.
- 21:25Everybody loved him when he finally we were rooting for him.
- 21:29We're living through living vicariously through him, right?
- 21:32We were on the edge of our seat and and owing and eyeing and
- 21:35damaging every time he just a putt or looked as though he's
- 21:38going to give the golf tournament away to Justin Rose.
- 21:41But he's kind of, I don't know, become somewhat of a villain.
- 21:45Yeah, he kind of has his short answers yesterday with the
- 21:48press. Not answering questions.
- 21:50Not answering questions about his driver Show up at my
- 21:53practice tee if you want to see well, what brand of tailor made
- 21:55is it? Show up at my at my practice tee
- 21:58if you want to. Well, why can't you just say it?
- 22:00You know it's an XYZ. You're being difficult to do
- 22:03that. Come down and pay because I
- 22:06thought he was kind of the A. Brother of the Fray?
- 22:09Yeah, I think that maybe and maybe this is nothing more.
- 22:12I don't want to be the face of golf.
- 22:13Yeah, maybe that's what I'd. Like to take a step back?
- 22:15Now, yeah, yeah, I wonder. Right, and this is the way to do
- 22:17it. Piss people off, right?
- 22:19People won't be following me. Right.
- 22:21Everybody that hates Bryce or hated Bryson Dechambeau, I love
- 22:24him. Most of them.
- 22:25Yeah, you. Can go the other way.
- 22:27I love the way but Bryson is doing with kids what Bryson is
- 22:31doing with videos How to. Explaining, explaining it, yeah.
- 22:35I mean, he is night and day from the person we thought he is.
- 22:40And Rory, since the second Sunday in April, he's kind of
- 22:44going down that path too, but in the opposite direction.
- 22:47Fair. Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:48We'll take a time out. So we'll join be joined by Matt
- 22:51Rudy. He for decades wrote for Golf
- 22:54Digest, now writing on his own, but still following the game and
- 22:57covering the game and writing about the game.
- 22:58And he'll join us next. Get his thoughts on Oakmont,
- 23:01David Icolt and Jimmy B #2. Have you noticed Brinson?
- 23:08Has there been a a tweet about the best NBA player ever that's
- 23:14gone unanswered by Brinson? No, no, and it's always wilt.
- 23:17It's always wilt. What is it about Wilt?
- 23:20Well, we got to get the story again 'cause I haven't heard it
- 23:22in a long time. The wilt, the bathroom story
- 23:25with Wilt. No, no, no, we, we have for our
- 23:28new audience. And as we continue to see our
- 23:31continuing to grow audience, we need to let all of them in.
- 23:36And one of the great stories ever told on these airwaves?
- 23:39Lock in 125, Jimmy B and the Wilt bathroom Story.
- 23:44He loves Wilt Chamberlain. He does.
- 23:47He looked up to him. Everybody did.
- 23:49Jimmy B looks up to a lot of people, myself included.
- 23:52Really you could post them. Up I tower over Jimmy B.
- 23:56He's a good dude. Wait till he wait till he hears
- 23:58radio voice Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network Hi
- 24:04Miller and Condon. Welcome back Iowa sports radio
- 24:06network with you until 2:00 Let's get to our guy Matt Rudy.
- 24:12He's joined me for only eight years or so, talking golf,
- 24:16previewing and recapping. It's the US Open.
- 24:19It's at Oakmont. Matt Rudy joins us.
- 24:22Matt Trenton. Ken, thank you as always for
- 24:23doing this. So tell me about this course.
- 24:26I know you've walked it in your decades of covering golf.
- 24:30What what are the pros up to this week Matt are up against
- 24:34rather this week? It's just such an interesting
- 24:37place because it's had tons of big tournaments since the 20s,
- 24:42but it's functionally a completely different course than
- 24:46the one you might have seen in 1960 or 1980.
- 24:49The trees are all gone. So they took all the trees out
- 24:52and even the graduated rough that was in place when Dustin
- 24:55Johnson won here is now it's you get to the edge of the fairway
- 24:59and all of a sudden you're in the jungle.
- 25:01So there's there's all kinds of familiarity.
- 25:06I think when you see the holes, you're going to kind of remember
- 25:09some of the shots that DJ hit or some of the shots that Cabrera
- 25:12hit. But the you know, the sort of
- 25:15the functionality or the way the golf course plays, I think it's
- 25:19going to be a little bit different.
- 25:20There's been an incredible amount of rain here in the in
- 25:23our neck of the woods and over the last two or three weeks.
- 25:26And so I think it's made everything pretty juicy.
- 25:29So when you combine all of that, if you get a few days of sun, I
- 25:34mean, you know how it goes there.
- 25:35I mean, I'm a Midwest guy just like you guys are when you get a
- 25:38bunch of rain and then you get a bunch of sun, you get a bunch of
- 25:42grass. So it's going to be a pretty
- 25:44interesting, I think over the next over the next few days.
- 25:47Matt, we've heard different tracks of the US Open.
- 25:50Unfair, not a true test, those kind of things.
- 25:53Tricked up. Is that going to be the case
- 25:55here, or is this just going to be an incredibly difficult golf
- 25:59course set up in as fair as a way as you can do with the way
- 26:02that the USGA wants to set up a course?
- 26:05Well, I mean, we've, I think we've had this discussion for
- 26:09years and probably 20 years on your show that, that I don't
- 26:14think personally that the US J has always done the great, the
- 26:17best job setting courses up to identify the best players.
- 26:21And that being said, over the last few years, I mean, if you
- 26:24look at what we got last year at Pioneers, for example, you
- 26:26couldn't ask for a better finish.
- 26:28And so I think what they've done a good job doing, you know,
- 26:33doing the last few years is giving a mixture of different
- 26:36venues that play different ways. This this place is going to play
- 26:40different than Pioneers did last year and it's going to play
- 26:43different than LA Country Club did two years ago.
- 26:46This is going to be a much more, you know, if you don't hit it
- 26:50straight off the tee, you might not ever finish.
- 26:53I mean, that's I mean, that's just reality.
- 26:55And what I don't like is that there's really no option if you
- 26:59hit it out, if you miss the fairway, you're punching out.
- 27:03And I like it when you're presented with some some
- 27:06interesting options that could really get you in trouble if you
- 27:09make a another bad choice. So if I'm picking here, I'm
- 27:14picking the people. I'm just going to scroll my
- 27:17finger down the strokes gained off the T list and pick players
- 27:22that have the best combination of length and accuracy.
- 27:25And of course, it's no big shock that Scott, he's got like a 15%
- 27:29lead over anybody else on tour in that stat.
- 27:32So I mean, that's why he's as good as he is.
- 27:33So if you needed any more reason to think he was the betting
- 27:36favorite, you got another one right there.
- 27:39So I have a theory about Rory McIlroy.
- 27:41Ran it by Trenton in our opening segment.
- 27:43I mean, if you weren't a family or friend of Justin Rose, the
- 27:47world was rooting for Rory on the second Sunday in April.
- 27:50Rather, we all lived that, lived and died through every shot
- 27:53since that time. Matt, I see a different Rory
- 27:56McIlroy not not reaching out to Jack Nicholas and saying I'm not
- 28:00coming. I mean, most tournaments, yeah,
- 28:02you can get away with it. But this is Jack Nicklaus
- 28:04yesterday. He's asked about his driver.
- 28:06And you make any changes? Yes, what do you get?
- 28:08What kind of driver? Tailor made.
- 28:10Well, what model is it? Well, show up at my practice, my
- 28:14practice on the practice range and you can see for yourself.
- 28:17I'm wondering if he's just I've had enough to be in the face of
- 28:20golf. Leave me alone.
- 28:21If I have to become somewhat of a jerk, I'll do that until I get
- 28:25my space. This is a different cat since he
- 28:27got the career Grand Slam. You know, it is and and and this
- 28:32will sound like heresy, but, but I do think that you can even
- 28:35make some parallels here to, you know, say when John ROM left the
- 28:40tour to join live, right? So, so when the oxygen in the
- 28:44room changes so dramatically, it takes time to to adjust to that.
- 28:49And, you know, if you look at ROM and, and how he's had to try
- 28:53to manage getting ready for majors now that his schedule is
- 28:57completely different, I think that Grand Slam and the Masters
- 29:01was the Mount Everest for Rory. And when you get to the top of
- 29:05Mount Everest, I think it's natural to look around and go,
- 29:08OK, now what? You know, what am I climbing
- 29:10next? And it can take some time, I'm
- 29:13sure, to figure out what that looks like.
- 29:16This is some money you could ever spend.
- 29:19He's got the career he's got, you know, all these things that
- 29:23you can, you know, all the boxes that you can check.
- 29:26And so I'm sure there's somewhat of a re evaluation that's going
- 29:31on now. And you know, what does that
- 29:32look like? How do you how do you drive
- 29:34yourself in the morning on a Tuesday at A at a non major, you
- 29:37know, to get ready for something?
- 29:39I mean, I think that's real. And now how that, you know,
- 29:43manifest long term, I think it's going to be OK.
- 29:46But how that manifests this week, if I were putting money
- 29:50down, that's probably not where I would put it.
- 29:52You're not alone. I mean, there's nobody that's
- 29:54taken more bets to miss the cut than Rory McIlroy.
- 29:57It's just wild going. To get a good number.
- 30:00This is the hardest, Yeah. This is the hardest driving week
- 30:03that tour players are going to have in the next five years.
- 30:07And he's traditionally been one of the one or two best drivers
- 30:10of the ball on the planet. So if you're if you're going
- 30:12into your major and that's your superpower and your and your
- 30:17super weapon either isn't present or isn't working, that's
- 30:21a big problem. John Rom's part of my card this
- 30:24week. I got to bet on him to win it.
- 30:27Think that the game has continued to improve.
- 30:29Though he hasn't won on Liv. He's been contending seemingly
- 30:31every week, top 10 after top ten.
- 30:33We saw the performance last time out of the PGA until the final
- 30:37couple of holes as he was going for it.
- 30:39Do you see ROM in a place right now that he can get back to the
- 30:42Top End and win AUS Open? I do because I mean #1 he's got
- 30:48major championship pedigree that doesn't vanish overnight.
- 30:51And #2 I think what happened at the PGA is a is a good thing.
- 30:56You know, I mean, I'm sure it didn't feel good at the time,
- 30:58but I think you need to go through that kind of stuff and
- 31:01you need to, you need to take a dent and take a Ding and, you
- 31:06know, and come back. I mean, just look at some of the
- 31:08experiences that Bryson has had the last few years in majors.
- 31:12You know, the close calls and you know the thing, you know,
- 31:14the last couple years in the PGA, I think all those things
- 31:17for super competitive athletes are things that, you know, kind
- 31:22of sharpen the knife, so to speak.
- 31:25So I don't think that's a terrible wager at all.
- 31:28And I think the other benefit is that Scotty is sucking up so
- 31:32much of the money that you're getting some pretty incredible
- 31:35values on some really good players.
- 31:38I mean, like I said, I'm not betting on on Rory, but to be
- 31:42able to get defending Masters champion at 14 to 1, I mean,
- 31:46that's that's pretty good. And I mean, you can even you can
- 31:49even go down to Ben Griffin, who's won two times in the last
- 31:53month and he's 70 to 1. So I mean the there are some
- 31:56values there, I think, if you're willing to look past the
- 31:59favorite. All right, so one guy, the
- 32:02whoever I listen to that bets on golf, whoever I read that writes
- 32:05about betting on golf this Harris English.
- 32:07I have not read a piece. I've not heard to anybody that
- 32:10bets on golf not bring up his name as a guy with a legitimate
- 32:14shot and he's 70 to 180 to one depending on where you shot.
- 32:18Was it? What is it about Harris English
- 32:21that has attracted so many, so many of these quote sharps to to
- 32:26be opining his name as a guy that can legitimately win this
- 32:30thing? So I mean, my flip answer is
- 32:33that you know somebody who does these, you know, these kinds of
- 32:37shows the Scotty Scheffler answer is is tiresome now, just
- 32:41like the Tiger, the Tiger Woods answer was tiresome for for so
- 32:45long. So I think after that and you
- 32:47get past that sort of first tier of usual suspects, then you have
- 32:51to start kind of doing some back bends and other contortions to
- 32:53figure out, you know what, what a U.S.
- 32:56Open pattern player would look like.
- 32:59You know what is you know what, who is the future Lucas Glover?
- 33:02You know who's the future? I don't want to say journeyman,
- 33:05but you know, somebody who doesn't necessarily have a star
- 33:08profile like Ludwig Oberg, you know, who's going to win one of
- 33:11these. And you know, I think that you
- 33:14got to start looking at, like I was saying before, you look at
- 33:16the strokes gained off the T stats.
- 33:19I think in a tournament like this, the way this golf course
- 33:23is set up, you're looking for, you know, people who are ball
- 33:26striking machines and who are excellent drivers of the ball.
- 33:30And I don't know that I would pick Harris English before I
- 33:33would pick someone like step Straka, say, you know, just just
- 33:37based on, you know, current stats.
- 33:40But but if if I'm trying to pick a stat that's going to, you
- 33:44know, sort of give you a hint about what might happen, it's
- 33:49the ball striking stats like that.
- 33:51But but that does leave a whole lot of the being ready to win a
- 33:55major and dealing with the adversity that's coming.
- 33:59There's going to be a time when someone is leading this
- 34:01tournament, fits it into the complete junk and can't find the
- 34:05ball and they've got to deal with a potential double bogey or
- 34:09triple bogey. I want people that are
- 34:11resilient, who can deal with that stuff and don't, you know,
- 34:15fall off a Cliff when it happens because that's the reality of
- 34:17this week. Morikawa this week along with
- 34:21Xander Shafley. We joke seemingly every major.
- 34:23I have these guys, always a part of it.
- 34:26Two guys that obviously have had a ton of success yet not great.
- 34:292020 fives for both of them. Of the two, Morikawa and Xander,
- 34:34who has the best shot of winning this week?
- 34:37That's a good question. I mean, the, the, I mean, if you
- 34:40look at what Xander did last year, I mean, winning two majors
- 34:42is a big deal and try he, he drives the ball incredibly well.
- 34:46He's a he's a really good putter.
- 34:49If you contrast that with Morakawa, Morakawa is a ball
- 34:51striking machine is potting is kind of suspect.
- 34:55But I actually think that at a venue like this where the greens
- 35:00are so crazy, I think that putting skill is relatively
- 35:05minimized. I mean, if you're hitting, you
- 35:09know, Looney Tunes pots that have 17 feet of break, I think
- 35:14that that sort of brings the field closer together and
- 35:17putting rather than pushing them farther out.
- 35:20So I mean, I mean, the one thing that does work and shop these
- 35:25favour is he's a substantially longer hitter than Morikawa is.
- 35:30And this is a full grown adult sized golf course.
- 35:34But the ability to precision strike iron and to hit it
- 35:39straight off the tee probably, you know, minimally favors
- 35:45Morikawa right now. Give me in our final minute,
- 35:48give me a player or two that you would bet on this week.
- 35:52Well, I mean, I I love it goes back to my stroke schemed off
- 35:56the Oberg is in the top ten this season and stroke. 22 to one and
- 36:01and he's. 22 to one, I think that's a a fantastic bat.
- 36:05I think, you know, Victor Hovland is, I can't ever decide
- 36:08if he's going to shoot 85 or 65, but that's another guy when
- 36:12things are going right is a is an amazing.
- 36:15But I'm going to go with what I was saying a little bit earlier.
- 36:17Ben Griffin has won twice this year in the last month and and
- 36:21he's 70 to 1. I mean, I'm not I'm not.
- 36:25I mean, that'd be a heck of a breakthrough year to win your
- 36:28first two events and then turn around and win your first major.
- 36:31Didn't you put him as your debutante in this statement?
- 36:34Ben Griffin. Ben Griffin?
- 36:35Yeah. Unbelievable.
- 36:36Matt. Rudy, thank you, buddy.
- 36:37I enjoyed the tournament. I'll reach out over the weekend
- 36:40and line up a time for Monday or to recap it with you.
- 36:42OK. You back to you guys.
- 36:44Thanks, pal. Matt Rudy, formerly of Golf
- 36:46Digest, now writing golf. He's a ghostwriter, lessons,
- 36:50etcetera. He's done it all and covered it
- 36:52all and been to all of those majors and all those most famous
- 36:55courses in the world. Boys can be a blast.
- 36:58Rent it really isn't it? I'm as excited for this U.S.
- 37:02Open as I have been a while. Last year, getting back to #2
- 37:06that was good. But there's something about
- 37:09Oakmont, the difficult nature, something about, you know, that
- 37:12Pittsburgh crowd. I, I think that has something to
- 37:15do with it. You get aggressive at times, you
- 37:18know, you can see there's some rough edges from time to time.
- 37:20I just, I love this setup this week and I want to see it be
- 37:25tough. I want to see it be difficult.
- 37:27I want to have the unfair once a year.
- 37:29Yeah, give me unfair. I think we're going to get it.
- 37:31Miller and Condon back to wrap up our number one.
- 37:33It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 37:46Very timely. Trent Condon, a little Indiana
- 37:48boy, John Cougar Mellencamp brings us back for our final
- 37:52couple of minutes. Speaking of musicians, Beach
- 37:55Boys don't die, but Brian Wilson just did.
- 37:58Yeah. I saw that.
- 37:59Good. My gosh, he was the Beach Boy,
- 38:02right? I mean, he was the guy in the
- 38:04Beach Boy. What was their first?
- 38:05Hit Oh, I don't know, I just know a lot of the songs.
- 38:10But again. He's been gone snow.
- 38:11Everybody's gone surfing. Surfing USA.
- 38:13Yeah. That was the first one, yeah,
- 38:14that's the. First one that comes into my
- 38:15mind. Yeah.
