- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, welcome back again to my brother's journey.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: I'm Greg Joseph Chuck, and with me is Baron Fink.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Baron, great to have you again.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Great to see you, Greg.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we we we know we start with a prayer.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I'll lead it off.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Name the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Dear Lord, uh first and foremost, we thank you for this day and this time together, and we ask that you bless our minds, uh, bless our mouths, and bless our hearts as we uh hopefully uh say things that are holy and righteous and good for building your kingdom here on this podcast.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: In your name we pray, Jesus.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: So um so about two weeks ago, a couple weeks ago, um the uh streaming series known as The Chosen wrapped up uh wrapped up their production.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: They wrapped up both season six, uh, which is going to be uh about the uh crucifixion and death of of our Lord, and then season seven is going to be about the resurrection of our Lord.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: And um, and so you know, I I guess I I wanted to first start off by saying, um, have you seen The Chosen?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Have you I have it?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh Yeah, I mean tell me tell me your thoughts about it first, and has it, you know, like have you recommended it to anyone or have your you know it just kind of give me your thoughts and I'll give you mine.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I thought it was I mean, I have watched it and I love it, and I have recommended it to anybody that that would be, you know, I think would be interested in it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, to me, Greg, I think the way it what it how it really resonated with me is it it really made Jesus appear human, uh, you know, and and or at least accentuated the human side of the qualities that we don't often see.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: We we simply certainly know Jesus' words, you know, they've been parsed, you know, a thousand different ways through scripture and studies and things like that.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: But to see his interaction with with his disciples, with with his adversaries, with the Roman officials, with the with the Pharisees and everything else, I I think it just was it was it's interesting.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: And and I think the most some of the most poignant moments I think of that were his interactions with those people that that that you know are are trying to deal with something that that you and I, I think to me, uh it kind of calls to mind how much we took for granted as far as when we read about disciples, you know, why did they why did they flee him when he was being crucified?
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Why, you know, why did they do this?
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Why did some of them turn around and go back to the ways of life?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: And I think about that now, and I'm thinking to myself, how hard it is.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: If I were, you know, imagine me, you know, you calling your wife saying, Hey, we're gonna hang around with with Jesus for a while, I'll be home maybe tomorrow, maybe next week.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: He's how he hasn't really told us his plans, but he's a really good cool guy.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: He could be the Messiah.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: How would that how well would that sell at home?
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Because, you know, there's no there's no and there's no evidence that already points to that.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: This is just somebody's word.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: And for these guys to give up their lives, and certainly especially with with you know uh Simon Peter and his wife, I mean that's a real relationship with hey, we gotta, you know, the floorboards leaking over here, squeaking, and and the food needs to be on the table, and you need to bring in some money because the fish aren't cutting.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Those are real life problems that would happen today.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: And yet here he is being pulled away by none other than the Messiah.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: And and he's got to make a decision.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: And they that so that conflict is there.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: I I think you know, you don't read about it, you don't feel that when you're reading scripture, but you see it when you're watching that show.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I I I wholeheartedly agree with that.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: There and I think you you point to a really good uh a really good subject matter in in Simon Peter, uh because there are episodes where there's clearly tension between his wife and him.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Uh and and yeah, I mean, you you forget about those.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: You don't even think about those things when you're reading, or at least I don't, when you're reading scripture.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: You're kind of so reading for your sick, yeah.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Right, you're so focused on scripture that you kind of totally forget, like, oh, Peter was a married guy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, you know, how is his wife dealing with him, you know, just just kind of like following this kind of crazy rabbi.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: I quit my job today, and okay.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: I heard this message from this radical guy who's calling himself the son of God, yeah, and I believe him.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: I quit the job and I'm following him and going up with all the kind of people in the temple, they don't like it, but don't worry about it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they're gonna come up.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they'll come around.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: But um no, I um so when I first watched the first couple episodes, uh I don't know if you remember, but the first episode, I don't even know if Jesus is in the first episode, actually.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I I he's talked about, but uh, I think it was Nicodemus who's kind of doing the talking.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: There might be a he's at the very end.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: At the very end, there might be just a little bit.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because Mary Magdalene is is you know suffering from the demons, and Nicodemus tries to come and exercise the demons, he can't do it.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And and then the Lord sees and I mean it's just the real brief, right?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And even in the second one, I believe, he had a brief kind of amount of time in the second episode, if I remember right.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Again, Nicodemus is kind of the but then then from there on it really begins to kind of uh build upon what's in the gospels, and and it's just you know, um I am a stickler for well-produced, well-written, well-acted, whether it's TV series or a movie, I'm just a stickler for that stuff.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: If it if it doesn't kind of check those boxes, I'm usually eh, okay, I'm not that interested in watching it.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And um, this one checked all those boxes.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, and I what was really amazing is how it came into reality.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: It was uh uh funded uh by individuals predominantly.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, crowdsourced, right?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And uh crowdsourced and um you know uh Dallas Jenkins, I believe that's his name, is the producer, and he wanted to, you know, make this this film, the series, and and uh I I I think he had a limited amount of of funding uh even through crowdsourcing.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Uh maybe it was just for the one season, and it was one season that was it, and it kind of took off.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it you know, and now it's gone all over the world.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And uh, and you know, there's there's some really interesting stories just um in and of itself about the cast members.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: I uh and I don't want to go too deep into that because we'll get a little bit off subject here, but if you ever hear Jonathan Roomy, who plays Jesus, talk about uh where he was in his acting career, uh, which was pretty much non-existent, yeah, and how he was down to literally like pennies in his account, and how he was ready to throw it all in.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And and he gets this phone call.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And he I think he got some checks that came in from I don't remember what, from maybe uh commercial or something he had filmed, but he had been praying to the Lord and and and he gets the phone call from from Dallas to come in and and and be cast as Jesus.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: And it has changed his life, not just financially but certainly uh religiously.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: He got very much back into uh touch with his Catholic faith and has been an unbelievable spokesperson um away from his character, um, and and goes, you know, all over.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, he seems like he's all over the country talking about his faith in in Christ and in his renewed faith in the Catholic Church.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: And um, and so and and and I also understand that many other cast members who actually weren't really weren't religious at all uh as a result of playing these characters uh have become very uh uh into their religion now and and gaining uh Christian religion.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: So um but The Chosen Itself is such a wonderful series.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Um man, there's just it what I love is it it just really brings the gospel to life.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: And yes, there are things in there that uh are not in the gospel, clearly, because but it just makes it it, I there's a richness there of all the individual disciples.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: There's a richness there certainly in Jesus Himself and His Mother Mary, um, and in other um uh characters, Roman character, Roman characters like Gaius, yeah, you know, and I but you know, you you're talking about and and and and people who are like stickers for this, it's like, well, but that's not in scripture, stuff like that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: I you know, I would say you know, give just give it a chance, watch it because because the things you see are they may not be necessarily in scripture verbatim, but they illustrate exactly what Jesus was trying to teach.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: And one of the things I really loved was the scene with um little James, who in this in this you know, little James has you know a lip and he's walking with a cane, and throughout the whole thing he's walking with his cane.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: And and one day he he right after Jesus said here with somebody else or whatever, he he walks up and he has this private conversation with Jesus, like Pastor, I mean I get it, man.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: This is this is wonderful, but you know, why why am I not here?
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, why not me?
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, why not me?
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I thought, you know, Jesus' response was just it was amazing.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: He's like, well, you know, the fact that you are here and you still follow me, and people see that.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: But they know that there's something more here than just that physical healing.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: And and you know, yes, can you can you find that you know in the Bible?
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: No.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: But if the message that it gives is I think it is exactly the message that uh Christ would would want, you know, to be able to say in this modern world.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: I think I think it's a good series.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: I think it was well done.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: I think uh I agree, by the way, that is a powerful, powerful scene.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: I think uh for me there's a couple others that really resonate.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Um uh one is the Sermon on the Mount.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: That is just phenomenal.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just so rich.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Again, uh and you can I mean, at least I could.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: I I could envision myself listening to that and and just being so overwhelmed and filled with joy and love as you walk away from the Sermon on the Mount message.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Um, but the other one that I really love is kind of the whole transformation of Gaius, oh yeah, the Roman uh and prefect or whatever it is, yes, and how he you know how how you kind of see his life and uh and how he demonstrates his faith in the Lord, which you know Jesus says, in all of Israel I haven't seen anyone with this kind of faith.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah which is what a statement, right?
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: You're an oppressed nation, right?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Of the Romans who the Jews absolutely hate, right?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: And you yourself are a Jew, right?
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And uh here you're saying, and of course you're bringing your message first and foremost to your own people, and you say, nowhere in all of Israel has there been such faith as is demonstrated by this Roman right now.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh you know there like I said, I think there's just and there are many, many other do you I mean do you have any other uh particularly ones that really resonate there?
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: I mean I I loved Jesus' uh conversation at late at night with Nicodemus, yeah, you know, about being born again.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Uh and about about seeing Nicodemus' struggle with with trying to to to weigh his allegiance to the Pharisees and the Sadducees, for which he's a part of, you know, and he's he's he's well known, he's well established.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: And here's this radical rabbi, and he's like, but he knows something's going on there, but he's just that struggle, and that struggle, you know, again, I don't think it's any different than the struggles we have with, you know, today.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: We're saying, well, you know, gosh, I think the Lord's called me to do this, but uh somebody else is saying this, and I don't know if I'm really is that the Lord speaking to me, is it somebody else?
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Is it just my conscience, guilty consciousness, whatever?
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: And I think that that this series does a good job with illustrating that even then those challenges existed.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: And and it didn't change Jesus' message.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: The message was still the same, but but it was one of Jesus is not you know, he's he's always warm and loving and accepting, you know, and that's we we read in scripture, we just uh sometimes it's not always uh happening.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you one other um episode I really enjoyed, where was where he sends out the twelve two by two to go out and heal others.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: And they're you know, they're like, we're gonna do what?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: And they're kind of like, uh, okay, Lord, well, how do we do this again?
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Because I don't remember you telling us or giving the instruction manual, paraphrasing here, you know, on how this is gonna happen.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Well, I think that was my reaction when you said we're gonna do a podcast.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: You reacted like they did.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Listen, speaking of um stepping out in faith, uh we're we have to wrap up because as you and I both know, uh we're about to go into our men's Bible study and uh and jump into another exciting chapter of Revelation.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Um I will throw a little uh a little tease out there uh for again those handful of listeners, right?
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Um so uh about a month ago or so, maybe a month and a half ago, we did a podcast with three of our brothers who are preparing for a pilgrimage along with Father Bernard, the pastor here at St.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Philip, the Apostle Church in in Statesville, uh, to follow in the footsteps of St.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Paul in Greece.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: And our brothers and their wives, their sisters, came back uh last night, I believe, from that trip.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: So uh so I think we're going to have a podcast uh I don't know exactly when, but uh probably in the next week or two.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And hopefully have the same brothers, and maybe if we get really lucky, maybe have Father on as along with us, we can hear all about that.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: So uh so again, for those handful of people that have listened to us, thousands upon thousands.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thousands.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: But uh, anyways, well listen, do you have anything else to do?
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: I'll say this if you haven't watched The Chosen, you should try it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Um, listen, thank you again for tuning in and being part of my brother's journey.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Hey, seek Jesus in all you do and be fishers of men.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: God bless you, and please join us again.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Viva Jesus.
