- 0:07The 1970 MLB All-Star Game was held at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, which had just opened up weeks earlier.
- 0:14The game is notable for being the first All-Star game to be played at night, a tradition that has continued ever since.
- 0:20The 1970 game was also the first time since 1957 that the starting lineup was determined by fan voting.
- 0:26These two changes were a huge success and the game still remains the highest rated All-Star game TV broadcast of all time.
- 0:33The National League attempted to extend their seven game winning streak with the likes of veterans Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, along with youngsters Pete Rose and Johnny Bench.
- 0:42You can find links to more info on the featured players, teams and stadium in the episode description.

- 0:52Enjoy the game.
- 1:22We received more votes than anybody else.
- 1:24And very quickly again, the American League batting lineup.
- 1:27Leading it off will be the oldest starter, Luis Aparicio at age 36.
- 1:32This is his ninth All-Star baseball game, his seventh start, but his first All-Star baseball game since 1963.
- 1:39Paul Dostemsky, that's second in center field.
- 1:41Frank Robinson, Ian Wright batting third.
- 1:44John Brubh-Powell, the cleanup hitter, the first baseman from Baltimore.
- 1:47Harmon Killibrew, the third baseman from the Minnesota Twins, that's fifth.
- 1:52Frank Howard of Washington left field batting sixth.
- 1:54Dave Johnson of Baltimore batting seventh, playing second base.
- 1:57Bill Freehand behind the plate, batting eighth.
- 1:59And Jim Palmer of Baltimore, the pitcher, batting ninth.
- 2:03Aparicio with a 3-13 batting average, three home runs, 24 RBIs, steps in right-handed batter with a closed stance,
- 2:11the closest voting in all of the American League this year.
- 2:17It was four shortstop, and Aparicio went out over Rico Petticelli of Boston.
- 2:22A big wide sweeping curve is what Cedar started Aparicio off with, and Luis was way out in front of it and fouled it back, barely getting a piece of the ball.
- 2:30Spike one to Aparicio as this 41st Major League All-Star baseball game is underway.
- 2:35Temperature in the mid-80s here at the brand-new Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
- 2:39As the boy comes back with the fastball, it's a foul back in the blue text source.
- 2:44And it's two strikes.
- 2:48I don't know, Sandy, if in All-Star play you look for that big sweeping curve on the first pitch of the ball game.
- 2:53I wouldn't think so, Jim, not especially for a fellow like Cedar who has not pitched since last Thursday.
- 2:59Right turn out on the fastball.
- 3:01Not having pitched since last Thursday, this would just about be his regular turn in the rotation.
- 3:06He's got to be pretty strong, especially if you're just going to turn him loose for three innings and say go as hard as you can.
- 3:13Carl Dierstromski, the All-Star center fielder.
- 3:16In voting for the outfielder, came up with Dierstromski, Robinson, and Frank Howard, none of whom plays center field.
- 3:22So Carl, who recently has been playing a lot of first base for the Red Sox, got the vote and he's in center field.
- 3:27Left-handed batter, holds the bat high and takes an inside pitch from Cedar.
- 3:304-1, Dierstromski hitting a 3-0-1, 21 home runs, 50 RBIs, and he's also stolen 16 bases.
- 3:37Everybody remembers Dierstromski's great 1967 series, Time is Called.
- 3:43They have someone on the field and she is being let off.
- 3:49And I don't know who this is.
- 3:51There has been an exotic dancer by the name of Morgana who has been on the field all across the United States,
- 3:57whether it is she or not, I don't know, but it is female and she's being escorted off the field after not even making it as far as the artificial turf.
- 4:05One-0, the count to Yosemite.
- 4:07I'll be honest, I'm not sure it's female.
- 4:09It looks like it may be a man with a wig or a little bit of a joke.
- 4:16They have even had newspaper columns devoted to the possible appearance of Morgana.
- 4:21One-0, the count, one out, we're in the top of the first inning of the Major League All-Star Baseball game number 41.
- 4:27Dierstromski swings, fouls it very high, and back out of play.
- 4:30It's one-and-one.
- 4:31Siever the pitcher from the Nets, bench of Cincinnati, to catch it.
- 4:38On deck is Frank Robinson.
- 4:40Frank has a sore shoulder.
- 4:41Yesterday at the All-Star Press Luncheon, someone asked Frank, how's your injury?
- 4:45And the Royal Memorial Outfielders said, which one?
- 4:48But they were speaking of his shoulder.
- 4:50Back with a curveball, hit up the middle, gets past the outstretched level Kessinger,
- 4:54and Dierstromski's on with the first base hit of the All-Star Baseball game.
- 4:58Hitting a one-one pitch, Siever almost was able to stop it at the mound.
- 5:02See, Siever has thrown quite a few change-ups in his line.
- 5:05It's a brief dive on the mound, this one out and one base hit here.
- 5:11But on that ground ball, you could just see the ball begin to pick up speed on this artificial surface.
- 5:17And that's the problem.
- 5:18Sometimes the ball is not hit very hard, but it begins to spin,
- 5:22and that's what the artificial surface does to it.
- 5:25And as it spins, it picks up a little bit speed.
- 5:27So the second and third bounce sometimes are a lot quicker than the first one was.
- 5:32Frank Robinson steps in.
- 5:34He leads the American League in hitting, hitting a 3-30 right-handed batter.
- 5:38Six All-Star games with the National League, and this is his third with the American, a swinging strike one.
- 5:44Around each of the bases, first, second, and third, there are 20-by-20 patches of dirt.
- 5:50Otherwise, it is completely artificial surface, except, of course, for the pitching mound and around home plate.
- 5:58Strike on the outside corner, bench fakes the throw to first.
- 6:02But back in plenty of time was the base runner, Yostremski.
- 6:05Down is two strikes to Frank Robinson.
- 6:08I think your first impression of the way the field is playing, Jim, everybody seems to be deeper.
- 6:13The shortstop is back behind the line where normally the skin would be.
- 6:18Robinson strikes out another fastball strikeout for Sieber, and as he strikes out after each show,
- 6:23so he does Frank Robinson on three pitches.
- 6:30So I think Tom Siever may have been trying to get away with having an easy time here in the All-Star game.
- 6:36I'm sure he's aware of the fact that he's slated to start again on Thursday after the All-Star break
- 6:43and was trying to have as easy a three-innings as he can, but after Yostremski got the hit,
- 6:48he really started to throw hard to Frank Robinson.
- 6:51Move, Powell, 73 RBI's, 23 home runs stepping in.
- 6:57Let them have better, makes the tens up for strike one.
- 7:07Powell hitting a 3-20.
- 7:13Yostremski slightly off first base.
- 7:15Dick Allen with the Cardinals holding him on there.
- 7:17Yostremski can move outside with the pitch and low, it's one and one.
- 7:21Tabu Cowell, Harmon Killibrew of the Minnesota Twins,
- 7:24last year's most viable player in the American League, his own deck.
- 7:27When the top of the first, no score, Yostremski at first base with a base hit up the middle.
- 7:33One and one, McContodd, big John Boogtel, all 6'4", better than 230 pounds.
- 7:38Swings, hits it high in the air in the infield.
- 7:41Tony Perez of Cincinnati will get the honor of making the last out of the first inning and does so.
- 7:46One hit, no errors, one left.
- 7:48And in the middle of the first inning, the American League nothing with the National League coming to back.
- 7:52Bottom of the first, the National League coming to back is Jim.
- 7:57Setting the defense for you for the American League now, Jim Palmer.
- 8:00Warming up, of course, Palmer had a great history of injuries after being a star of the 1966 season in the World Series,
- 8:06but has come back and is 12-6 thus far this year from Baltimore.
- 8:10Bill Frehan is behind the plate from Detroit.
- 8:12Boogtel of Baltimore at first, David Johnson of Baltimore down at second.
- 8:16Luis Aparicio of the White Sox at short, Harmon Killibrew of Minnesota at third,
- 8:20Frank Howard of Washington at left, Kyle Dierstrumpfschi of Boston in center,
- 8:24Frank Robinson of Baltimore in right.
- 8:26The batter is Willie Mays.
- 8:28This is his 21st All-Star Game, the seventh time he has led off an All-Star Game.
- 8:33Makes a called strike from Palmer.
- 8:35Back in 1965, Mays led off with a home run, and that's only been done three times in the previous 40 years of Major League All-Star play.
- 8:45Palmer, a right-hander, comes back, misses outside.
- 8:48It's one-on-one to Willie Mays, hitting a 272, 619 home runs.
- 8:53Second only to the Great Bay, 19 of those this year.
- 8:56Last year, Mays hit only 13 home runs all year, but has 19 already this year.
- 9:0047 RBI, big swinging strike.
- 9:06Mays, the big scoreboard in center field shows, holds the All-Star records for most at bats, most runs, most hits, most stolen bases, and most total bases.
- 9:14Outside of that, Willie hasn't been doing much lately.
- 9:17Count is one and two to him. Palmer, the right-hander, throws inside.
- 9:20Mays leans away from the fastball. It's 2-2.
- 9:28Luman Harris, the manager of Atlanta, is coaching at first base.
- 9:31And Leodora Osher, the manager of the Chicago Cubs, over at third.
- 9:34And Mays strikes out, swinging.
- 9:37And Palmer's got good stuff also. We've talked about South State, the fact that he has good stuff.
- 9:42Palmer throws very hard. He's got a good fighter and a good curveball. He's given us that any problem in his career.
- 9:49He's been a little bit with control, but mostly with injuries.
- 9:51He's never really been able to put a full year together without being either sick or hurt or having a problem of staying in the major leagues.
- 9:59But this year, he's started well. He's having a good year. And as you say, it's his first All-Star year.
- 10:04And he looks like he's going to become the kind of pitcher everybody thought he would.
- 10:08Dick Allen of the Cardinals takes a big swing at Palmer's first pitch strike one.
- 10:12As we said, in other years, we have called Dick Richie, but after going to the Cardinals, he announced he wanted to be called Dick.
- 10:18So it is Dick Allen hitting a 285, 25 home runs, 72 RBIs, Palmer's right back in a high inside fastball that Allen ducks under.
- 10:26And it's one and one with Palmer.
- 10:28Allen, while with the Phillies, sets the home run marks for Philadelphia as a first baseman, as a third baseman, and as an outfielder.
- 10:35Back with a big curve, but it stays high. And out of the strike zone, it's two and one.
- 10:39Allen with Hank Aaron, who's got more votes than anybody else in the voting, conducted for the first time since 1957 by you, the public, is on deck.
- 10:48By the way, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn said also at yesterday's press luncheon that he was sure that it was his intention that they would have the fans vote again next year.
- 10:56Fastball, and Allen is swinging and missing. It's two and two.
- 11:00One out, and we're in the last of the first. No score. This all-star baseball game from the brand-new Riverfront Stadium, almost completely artificially turnt in Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 11:09Palmer peering in for the sign, and throws, drive to right field.
- 11:15Back to Frank Robinson, back near the warning, back back near the wall, and has it against the wall.
- 11:20The ball was well hit by Richie Allen. It was hit to the opposite field. Richie is very strong, and here in this big ballpark,
- 11:30Frank Robinson had a lot of room. He went back all the way to the wall, did finally bang into the wall as he caught the ball.
- 11:36But I think it fooled Palmer a little bit. He was just trying to get the ball out away from Richie and keep it in the ballpark, and Richie hit it a long way.
- 11:44Hank Aaron, 19th all-star game, his 13th start, hitting a 314 on the year with Atlanta 24 home runs and 71 RBIs.
- 11:53And Palmer is ready, and hits the outside corner with a fastball at strike one.
- 12:01Two outs, Yosfrenski of Boston has the only hit in the ball game, and we're in the last of the first.
- 12:08Palmer's a little high with his next pitch. It's one and one to Aaron. Tony Perez of Cincinnati kneels on deck.
- 12:16This is his stadium. They closed up Crosley Field at the end of June, and this is the new home of what they call the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds.
- 12:23Palmer misses with his next pitch. It's two and one.
- 12:30Aparicio is in where the skin of the injury would normally be, but David Johnson is deep, and the ball is hit to Aparicio on two giant hops.
- 12:37He comes the ball over to Powell, low throw, but in plenty of time, and Aaron is out.
- 12:41And at the end of one inning, the National and the American League are scored.
- 12:45Back in Cincinnati, Jim Simpson with Sandy Kofax.
- 12:49Harmon Killebrew leads off the top of the second inning, takes an outside pitch from Sieber. It's ball one.
- 12:54Killebrew right-handed batter from Minnesota, big swing, and missed for strike one, and one and one.
- 12:59Harmon, last year's most valuable player in the American League, getting 322, leading the league in home runs with 26, and he has 72 RBIs.
- 13:06Tenth All-Star game is six starts. Sieber, the right-hander of the Mets, ready again, low and away.
- 13:11Ball gets the, there's Johnny Bench, digs it out and throws it back to Thomas. Two and one to Harmon Killebrew.
- 13:18A hot, muggy night. Attendance, 51,838.
- 13:25That's an attendance figure they could have put up there before the game began. It's been sold out for some time.
- 13:29Big swing and a miss by Killebrew, and it's 2-2.
- 13:35Now we look at both Beckert, and they've got the shift on for Killebrew.
- 13:42Beckert is on the third base side of second and almost in short center field, out past where the skin of the infield would be.
- 13:48Killebrew, though, strikes out, swingers. And that's the third strikeout for Tom Sieber.
- 13:53Tim, I think we should describe this infield a little bit. There is no dirt as the base path portion, but they have white lines to designate where it would normally be.
- 14:04It is all the green artificial surface, but you can see the outline by a white line drawn all the way around the infield so you can sort of tell where the infielders are playing.
- 14:17Frank Howard steps in, turned to Al Barlich, the nationally gun par, and Barlich walked up and asked Tom Sieber for the baseball, looks at it, and tosses it back to Sieber.
- 14:26And as Howard at the Washington Center steps in, you can hear the boos of the crowd. Frank is a big man, listed at 6'7", and he says he plays at about 2'60".
- 14:37There are those who will say it's more like 2'80". Frank hitting 2'82", 24 home runs, most of them giant plants, 67 RBI.
- 14:46Third all-star game and his third start, big right-handed batter.
- 14:50One out on the top of the second in the scoreless all-star baseball game, and he swings that big-cut and misses, strike one.
- 14:58Four men have struck out six in an all-star game. Most recently, Ferguson Jenkins a couple of years ago in 1967, fastball down the middle, strike two.
- 15:11Carl Hubbard, remember his great feat? The men that he struck out, Ruth, Gary, Simmons, Fox, Cronin, outside and high from Tom Sieber, it's one ball, two strikes to Frank Howard.
- 15:26Aparicio led off in the American League by striking out on three pitches.
- 15:29The Stumski's single went up the middle, Robinson, Frank, struck out on three pitches, and Powell popped out. Since that time, Killebrew has also struck out, and big Frank Howard strikes out, and that's the fourth for Tom Sieber.
- 15:42Sieber looks like he's throwing very well tonight. He isn't throwing his good fastball all the time.
- 15:48He gets two strikes on the hitter, and all of a sudden there's just a little bit extra on that fastball, and it's given the American League hitters a lot of trouble up to now.
- 15:58Well, we were talking about that all-star record, Sandy, six strikeouts, and of course a pitcher can only work three innings unless he goes to extra innings, and Sieber already has four.
- 16:08Breaking pitch low and away from the next batter, Davy Johnson of Baltimore, hitting 299, playing second base. His first start, he was on the 1968 squad, played and was 0-1.
- 16:17He was named last year, but was hurt and didn't get to play. Striked two swinging, and since Rod Carew is injured and out of active baseball, at least until September, according to President Calvin Griffin of the Minnesota Twins, Davy Johnson is down to second base.
- 16:33Well, Sieber's out in front of Johnson now, already with four strikeouts, comes back, Johnson gets a piece of it, and fouls it to the screen.
- 16:42You know, some people say, Sandy, that you dwell too much on statistics of baseball, but those who love and follow baseball, statistics are just like the basic course.
- 16:51And here we are, six strikeouts to record, and Sieber already with four, and we're not yet through the second inning.
- 16:57Just misses, Sieber started to walk off the mound. He thought he had strikeout number five.
- 17:02I think the whole National League team thought he had strikeout number five. Jelly Bench started to leave, the whole infield was on its way out. The only one that said no was Al Varley.
- 17:12Due to the count, Sieber back, get high in the air, and into short right field. Aaron circles back and over.
- 17:19Woody Mays is there, Aaron will make the catch, and it's another one-shoot reading for the American League.
- 17:24Aaron hits through errors and none left.
- 17:26And again, here's a word from Len Dillon. The crowd here at the Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati in this shortest ball game, as we open the second tier of the arrival of Tony Perez, hitting.356, leading the National League with 29 home runs and 90 RBIs.
- 17:40And of course, he plays for the Cincinnati Reds. Right-handed batter, closed stance, Jim Palmer of Baltimore, the right-handed pitcher staring in and throws high to Perez, ball one.
- 17:51The American League, no runs, one hit, no errors. The National League got for me for the second time, went down one, two, three in the half of the first inning.
- 17:58Palmer ready again, throws again. This one is shoulder high, a little bit lower than the shoulder, says Parlik, and it's a strike, one and one.
- 18:13Palmer back, bowled off to the right. It's one and two, up in the seats.
- 18:20The clap here, of course, I think some of the folks here, Sandy, believe they're watching the Cincinnati Reds play.
- 18:26Of course, a foul at Perez and with the all-star break and already 90 RBIs and 29 home runs and.356 average, you know the kind of years he's already had, let alone at the finish.
- 18:35Fastball from Palmer is high, and it's two-two.
- 18:44Armand Killebrew very deep at third base for the right-handed Perez. Palmer throws, swinging strike three for Tony Perez, and that's the second strikeout for Jim Palmer.
- 18:55I think it begins to show up that if you've got good pitching out there, they're having a good night.
- 19:01No matter how good the hitters are, they're going to dominate the ballgame.
- 19:04And so far, Tom Siever and Jim Palmer have taken charge of this ballgame, and even these great hitters have not handled them or not even look too good at the play.
- 19:14Every one of the six strikeouts thus far, four by Siever, two by Palmer, have been swinging strike threes.
- 19:20Here's Rico Cardi, and he takes another high pitch from Palmer.
- 19:23Cardi leads the National League in hitting,.365, and it's his first all-star game, and he was a right-in candidate, and he made it the big.
- 19:31From the Atlanta Braves, back again, Palmer's pitches tonight, even though he's not been hooked thus far, Sandy, are high.
- 19:38Jim, he has good enough stuff to get away with pitching up a little bit.
- 19:42I don't think Jim likes to do it as a regular routine, but he could get away with it for a few innings.
- 19:47He's high again, and this time outside, and it's three and oh.
- 19:50The National League has yet to have a base runner.
- 19:52To another thing, you said that all the strikeouts have been swinging.
- 19:56Well, you look at that lineup. There's nobody down there getting paid for taking.
- 19:59You're all pretty good players to bat.
- 20:02Bring it over to Cardi, and he has looked down to DeRosier and takes another high pitch, and on four pitches, out of them high, Cardi draws the loss.
- 20:11And Johnny Bentz of Cincinnati, the catcher, hitting.285, a 28 home run comes up.
- 20:23The National League has its first base runner, Rico Cardi, at first base.
- 20:27And Johnny Bentz, who was on the All-Star squad as a rookie, this is his third year in the National League.
- 20:34This is his third All-Star game and his second start.
- 20:37Last year, he hit a home run.
- 20:41Palmer ready and throws outside, ball on.
- 20:44While Palmer was trying to come back, the story goes, in one of the Cincinnati Papers this morning,
- 20:49he was down at Rochester, and Johnny Bentz was also in the National League, and Palmer had the bases loaded,
- 20:54and Earl Weaver at that time, the manager of Rochester, walked out and said he's a ping pong hitter.
- 20:57Palmer threw one down the middle, and Bentz got a grand slam home run.
- 21:00Now, with the pitch outside, Palmer has thrown six straight balls,
- 21:05and striking out Tony Perez to lead off the last of the seconds.
- 21:12Cardi's short lead, he's still within that 20 by 20 section of dirt at first base.
- 21:16Here's the strike.
- 21:19Bentz looked as though he might offer at it, although you would think that he was taking,
- 21:24so now he stares down to Leo DeRoccia of the Cubs, who's coaching at third base.
- 21:29Palmer already is dripping wet.
- 21:31It's a very humid night in Cincinnati.
- 21:34Just before game time, the temperature was 87 degrees.
- 21:39Two-and-one pitch, again on the corners, 2-2.
- 21:44Tonight's broadcast not only heard throughout the United States on NBC,
- 21:49but through AFRTS overseas in Europe and in Southeast Asia, wherever you are,
- 21:57Japan, Fanny Kofax and I greet you from Cincinnati, Ohio,
- 22:01on the brand-new Riverfront Stadium.
- 22:03Scoreless ballgame.
- 22:05Breaking pitch, Bentz fouls it back, 2-2.
- 22:08Last of the second inning, one out, that's for as a strikeout.
- 22:14Cardi with a walk on four pitches down at first base,
- 22:18and 2-2 to Johnny Bentz in this scoreless ballgame.
- 22:23The 1968 game, remember, was one to nothing when Mays got on and scored an unearned run
- 22:29as the first man up for the National League down in the Astragal.
- 22:32Foul back and four-dust and over a hit behind home plate.
- 22:35Complements 2-2 to Johnny Bentz.
- 22:38Bentz is a youngster, only 22 years old, born in Oklahoma City, lives in Cincinnati.
- 22:44And back in 1967 when Jim Palmer was trying to work out his arm problems of Rochester
- 22:49and Bentz hit that grand slam off of him, he was only the minor league player of the year.
- 22:56Palmer in the stretch, looking at Cardi and comes back and again, Bentz fouls it back.
- 23:00There is a breeze blowing within this riverfront stadium,
- 23:06and I'm sure it's twirling around, but the flag out on right center field is blowing from center toward right.
- 23:13Don Kessinger of the Chicago Cubs on deck.
- 23:22Palmer again in the stretch.
- 23:24In field of double play depth and Bentz strikes out on a low pitch outside.
- 23:33Forward thrown, Bentz, quite a number of fast balls in a row, and he's got Johnny set up for it pretty well
- 23:38and came back with a slider or a curve ball, looked more like the slider, low, just a little bit off the plate,
- 23:44low outside and Bentz went after it. It was a bad ball, but it's a good pitch from Palmer's point of view.
- 23:49Palmer's now struck out three and Zebers struck out four. Here's Don Kessinger, the switch hitter from Chicago batting left handed
- 23:55against the right-handed Palmer. Don hitting 281, not known for power, has one home run this year.
- 24:03Last year he hit a total of four, but last year he also won the Golden Glove, and last Saturday Sandy and I were in Chicago
- 24:10for a Chicago Cubs game and Kessinger had some kind of day afield.
- 24:14A foul laced down along the third baseline, it curves into the seats, and it's one and one to Kessinger.
- 24:23Kessinger of course was playing then in what they called a friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
- 24:27Tonight he's on this artificially turnt infield and outfield, first time in his career.
- 24:34One and one to Don, Cardy still at first base, high outside pitch from Palmer, it's two and one, two out, last for the second, no score.
- 24:41I think Kessinger is the kind of hitter that this artificial surface would really help.
- 24:45Normally he's hitting left hand, he doesn't have great power, the infield, the outfield would be playing him shallow,
- 24:52but on a field like this they can't afford to play too shallow because the ball gets by them easy,
- 24:56so he'll have a chance to drop the ball in front of outfielders that he doesn't have on a regular field.
- 25:01Kessinger fouls the next pitch back and the count remains two balls, two strikes to the Chicago Cubs shortstop in his third all-star game.
- 25:09He has yet to have a hit in all-star play, he's been up five times before and is hipped it.
- 25:14Glenn Becker, his teammate from the Cubs, standing on deck.
- 25:18Over behind first base where President Nixon and his party are seated.
- 25:23Up the middle and it might get through, Aparicio tries to find a down ten hot playing in shallow centerfield as his front,
- 25:28he picks it up very quickly and Cardy has to stop at second and the national league has its first base hit.
- 25:35And there's a ball that was not hit too well, Aparicio was playing around toward second base,
- 25:41but I think on this field the ground balls do pick up so much, the ball does not slow down,
- 25:47it gets going faster, that ball got through the infield.
- 25:50I think in a normal field the ball probably would have been caught and fielded by Aparicio behind second.
- 25:56Glenn Becker, the Chicago Cubs hitting 261 and speaking of strikeouts as we have,
- 26:00here's the man that's been the toughest to strike out in the national league for the last four years.
- 26:05He takes the ball inside from Jim Palmer.
- 26:10Becker, very close stance, right-handed batter, always manages to get a piece of the ball,
- 26:16chokes up on the bat, Palmer ready and throws high again, 2-0.
- 26:21When Jim has been wild, for example when he walked Rico Cardy,
- 26:24in this the second inning he walked him on four pitches and all of them were up.
- 26:27When he struck out bench it was on a slider, blown away.
- 26:34Cardy down at second, Kessinger on first, 2-0.
- 26:38Back with a breaking pitch, but again it's high and slightly outside and it's 3-0.
- 26:42The Kessinger looking down to the American League bullpen, no activity.
- 26:47The American League has part of you they can call in, Mike Friar, Sam McDowell is scheduled to go next,
- 26:52Dave McNally, Chris Peterson, Jim Carey, Clyde Wright, Jim Hunter, Mel Stoudelmar.
- 26:56Drive on three hops to Davey Johnson, his side arms at the group,
- 27:00Talos teammate at first base and the National League goes down on no runs,
- 27:04one hit, no errors and two left at the end of two complete.
- 27:07It's a scoreless ball game.
- 27:10Bill Frehan will lead it off in the third inning for the American League
- 27:13in this scoreless ball game at the Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio,
- 27:16the 41st major league all-star baseball game.
- 27:19The Riverfront Stadium right by the Ohio River.
- 27:22As a matter of fact they even have what they call flood control here.
- 27:27Flood walls to prevent the Ohio from overflowing as it did years ago and flooded Crosley Field.
- 27:32Bill Frehan is fifth consecutive shot as the catcher for the American League from Detroit,
- 27:37hitting two 18-13 home runs, 33 RBIs, right-handed batter,
- 27:41has led the American League in getting hit by pitches the last couple of years,
- 27:45but this pitch is on the outside corner, strike one to Frehan.
- 27:48Tom Siebert working with four strikeouts, all of them swinging.
- 27:51He's given up a ground ball base hit back through the middle by Ustremski and has walked nobody.
- 27:57Blown away from Siebert and this will be Tom's last inning.
- 28:04Jim Merritt now warms up.
- 28:06Former American leaguer, left-hander, now down in the National League, both in.
- 28:10He'll be coming on in the next inning.
- 28:12Siebert back with a 1-1 pitch, drill to center field.
- 28:14Willie Mays running to his left, now tops his glove and has it for the first down.
- 28:18Well hit by Bill Frehan and Jim Palmer, the pitcher will bat for himself.
- 28:26Palmer's 1-12, lost six.
- 28:29And of course plays for Earl Weaver for the Baltimore Orioles.
- 28:34And of course, Baltimore is having a grand time in the Eastern Division of the American League,
- 28:39leading Detroit by six big games.
- 28:41Palmer takes a swing at the first pitch.
- 28:43It was in on his fists, it's strike one.
- 28:45Jim Palmer is a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 28:48He's not hit for that good an average this year, but he's got good power and hit a few home runs in his career.
- 28:53By the butt, Perez playing deep comes with a bare hand and pick a hole to have him.
- 28:57A fine play by Tony Perez.
- 29:00That's a very, very fine play by Tony Perez.
- 29:04He was playing deep, he was playing very deep.
- 29:07And the punt playing is even more difficult, I would think, on this kind of an infield.
- 29:12It's very tough to keep your footing, and Perez came in, made the play,
- 29:16picked the ball up cleanly, and threw from that off-balance position and made just a great throw.
- 29:21And the throw is a little bit off where Richie Allen can't stretch, he can't make the play.
- 29:26Now, Periscio, who struck out on three pitches, is back.
- 29:30With two out on the third inning for the American League, a scoreless game.
- 29:33Periscio right-handed batter from Chicago, takes outside ball one.
- 29:37Tom Seever, the New York Mets, is ready to throw again, and does.
- 29:40Ground ball, chance for Beckett at second base, scoops it up, throws on to Dick Allen at first base.
- 29:45And it's another one-two-three inning, and Seever is through with his pitching,
- 29:49and he is not allowed to run.
- 29:51In the middle of the third inning, the American League nothing and the National League nothing.
- 29:56The score at the end of two-and-a-half innings, American League nothing, the National League nothing.
- 30:01Jimmy?
- 30:03Now, in Montreal, they call him Le Grand Ouan.
- 30:06Rusty Stobb, the red-headed outfielder, with the Montreal Expos, and quite a star he is up there, too.
- 30:14The Expos representative with the National League, and he'll be batting for Tom Seever,
- 30:18who has completed his pitching chores.
- 30:20Stobb hitting at 293, has 15 home runs, 55 RBIs.
- 30:24Palmer's first pitch to the left-hander is a strike at the knees on the outside corner.
- 30:28No score. Stobb will be followed by Willie Mays, who is on deck, and then Dick Allen.
- 30:35There's not been anything close to a scoring threat, although it's two out.
- 30:39The last inning, pitches inside from Palmer, and it's one and one.
- 30:43Cardi got his far second after walking, and Kessinger,
- 30:46ground with a single up the middle.
- 30:48Same kind of hit that Yastremski had, the only hit for the American League.
- 30:51Palmer with the one-one pitch, is back high in the air.
- 30:55Frank Robinson, Card Yastremski there.
- 30:57Yastremski and Wright Centerfield takes it for the first out.
- 31:01Jim, I think right now we have to be a little careful on how we call some of these fly balls.
- 31:06We've reached the point of the evening where it's very difficult to see fly balls.
- 31:10It's not dark enough yet, and it's not light enough.
- 31:13The sky is just a light blue, and at this time in a ball game,
- 31:17a lot of fly balls are lost by outfielders.
- 31:19There's not enough contrast, so any ball that goes up right now,
- 31:22the outfielders could have a little bit of trouble with.
- 31:25Willie Mays, who struck out swinging, takes high from Palmer.
- 31:29It's a 0-1, and the last of the third.
- 31:31Go runs one hit, no errors for the American League,
- 31:34and the same line score for the Nationals, 0-1 and 0 in the 41st Major League All-Star Game.
- 31:39Palmer back again, and his pitch again is high and away.
- 31:42And it's 2-0 to Willie Mays.
- 31:45Jim Palmer also working his last inning, and so Sam McDowell of Cleveland is warming up.
- 31:50Jim Merritt of Cincinnati will come in to pitch the fourth inning for the National League.
- 31:54Palmer throws, fouled high, over toward the seats, over quickly is Powell.
- 31:59There's a ball boy right there who didn't see him behind it, and he takes it for the second out.
- 32:05I think it's a good thing that Powell did see the ball that day,
- 32:08because Bill Freehand could not find it.
- 32:10As we talked about the sky being tough, Bill looked up and never left home plate.
- 32:14He was just looking all around, and Pook Powell saw it all the way and came in
- 32:18and almost ran down the ball boy who didn't know where to go.
- 32:21He was watching Freehand.
- 32:23And of course the ball boy, I guess his 15, 16 may be Sandy,
- 32:26and about five, six or seven and 140, and Big Booth Powell was bearing down on him.
- 32:30Here's Nick Allen who flies deep to right, and he takes ball one from Jim Palmer.
- 32:37Now it's at first, Johnson at second, Apericio at short,
- 32:40Killebrew at third, Howard in left, Gostemsky in center, Robinson in right,
- 32:43Freehand behind the plate, and Palmer with a 1-0 pitch.
- 32:46Allen swings and misses.
- 32:48Strike one, it's 1-1.
- 32:50The only change that we've had, and believe me, we'll have a lot of changes before this game is over,
- 32:54has been Rusty Staub has batted for Tom Siever.
- 32:59Fly to right center, swinging strike again by Allen, it's 1-2.
- 33:03Siever worked three innings, gave up one, he had a ground ball single up the middle by Gostemsky,
- 33:07struck out four and walked nobody.
- 33:11And now he can look ahead to starting again on Thursday when regular play continues
- 33:16over the second half of the season.
- 33:18Now to the count, Nick Allen.
- 33:21Dries right to second baseman, Davy Johnson.
- 33:24No runs, hits or errors, and at the end of three complete now.
- 33:26The American League nothing and the National League nothing.
- 33:28And Dylan, we're in the top of the fourth inning, and the score is nothing, nothing.
- 33:32The National League and the American League in this 41st All-Star game.
- 33:36And Jim Merritt, the left-hander of Cincinnati, prepared to throw to his first batter,
- 33:40Carl Gostemsky of Boston, who has the American League's only hit that ground ball single up the middle.
- 33:44Now the left-hander, who has won 14 and lost seven to the Reds this year, 3.47 has earned an average.
- 33:50He's the only one on the National League squad who played formally in the American League.
- 33:55Whereas on the American League squad, Frank Robinson, Frank Howard, Mike Cuellar, Sandy Alomar,
- 34:02Alex Johnson, Tommy Harper, Amos Otis, all played in the National League.
- 34:08Stremsky standing off deck as Johnny Bench runs out and talks to his teammate.
- 34:13And now his batter made on the All-Star game, Jim Merritt.
- 34:18Jastremsky hit a one-ball, one-strike pitch right up the middle over the mound,
- 34:21past Tom Sievers, and in the center field for the only hit.
- 34:24Now he drives one deep to center field.
- 34:26Back goes Willie Mays, looking as though he has it all away.
- 34:29Taps his glove near the wall and takes it.
- 34:33About 400 feet away.
- 34:35The ball was hit very hard by Carl Jastremsky.
- 34:38You can watch Mays and tell that he's going to catch the ball.
- 34:42It was fairly evident he was backing up slowly.
- 34:45If there's going to be a problem, he'd get to the wall so that he'd have a chance to jump.
- 34:49But Willie just sort of trailed the ball back slowly and caught it right at the face of the wall.
- 34:54Frank Robinson, who struck out on three pitches against Tom Sievers,
- 34:57faces the left-hander Merritt and takes inside from Jim.
- 35:01Ball one.
- 35:04Well, thus far there's been no scoring at all.
- 35:06The National League did get one man as far as second base in the second inning.
- 35:10Better than that, no. Robinson almost goes into the ground like a porky.
- 35:13He's swinging and missing, and it fits for Merritt.
- 35:18One and one for Frank Robinson, who's bothered with his sore shoulder.
- 35:22But although Earl Weaver could take players out, he's going with the starting lineup here in the fourth inning.
- 35:27He has to play them for three, but this is inning number four.
- 35:32Back again, and Merritt's pitch catches the outside corner.
- 35:35Strike two.
- 35:36Frank Robinson doesn't think so, walks away.
- 35:39He's on fire, and he's got to be worn tonight, Al Barlich, wearing that chest protector underneath a jacket.
- 35:45And the temperature now is at least 85, and it feels as though the humidity is the same.
- 35:50One and two, back with the ball that bounces in the dirt, and it's two-two.
- 35:54And Frank Robinson.
- 35:56I noticed earlier in the game there seemed to be some breeze up above the stadium.
- 36:00The flags were moving, but right now they're just still, and it seems to be getting warmer.
- 36:04Before the night's over, it's going to have its effect on the umpire, Al Barlich.
- 36:09Sam McDowell continues to warm, if that be the word, down in the American League bullpen, down in left field.
- 36:17Two-two, the count to Frank Robinson, who's struck out, and he's called out on the change-up.
- 36:22The first two pitchers we've seen here tonight, Siever and Palmer, both are great stuff.
- 36:32The umpire comes out, he is not the kind of guy who throws as hard as the first two guys, but he has great changes of speed.
- 36:39He has a fine curve ball, he has good control, he knows how to pitch.
- 36:42I think we've seen an example of it here in these first two hitters.
- 36:46Boob Tau popped to Perez to end the first inning.
- 36:49Last time up, the big, giant left-handed batter facing the left-hander,
- 36:53Jim Barrett on the mound, and the pitch is blown away from him.
- 36:56Ball on.
- 36:57He's out in the fourth inning before 51,838.
- 37:01A radio broadcast tonight traveling around the world in the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 37:06Another low and away pitch from Boob Tau, and that seems to be the best place to pitch a man, that's big.
- 37:12I think you look at the scoreboard and you've got a big ballpark, like this new one in Cincinnati, and it's two out, nobody on the inning.
- 37:20You try and keep the ball away from the hitter and try and keep it in the park.
- 37:23You give them the base hit to the opposite field, but try not to let them hit the home run.
- 37:27I asked Sandy today about Tom Seavers saying that sometimes with this kind of artificially churched ground
- 37:34that you might try to hit men when it, make the men hit the ball in the air instead of on the ground.
- 37:38And Sandy's retort was, I've never seen a ground ball go into the stands for a home run.
- 37:42Change up and fouls way out in front of it, and it's 2-2.
- 37:49I think the artificial service may cause more runs to be scored, Jim, but I think it'll happen for both clubs.
- 37:56So I think a pitcher still has to do his job the best way he knows how.
- 38:01On the fourth inning, five American leaguers have struck out against nationally pitching,
- 38:06fouled off deep in the left field stand by a foul, and three national leaguers were struck out by Jim Palmer, who is now through.
- 38:16Palmer worked his three innings, gave up one hit, struck out three in, walked one. McDowell will be next up.
- 38:25Now it's ready with a 2-2 pitch, and Powell hits it deep to center field.
- 38:29Woody Mays comes over. It's not that deep, really.
- 38:31Taps his glove, and then left center field, makes the basket catch.
- 38:34The runs hit the errors. In the middle of the fourth, we still have a scoreless ball game.
- 38:38The American and the National League, no score.
- 38:40The score at the end of three and a half innings, American League nothing, the National League nothing.
- 38:47Big Sam McDowell has led the American League in strikeouts for quite some time, four times in the last five years.
- 38:55And he leads the major leagues in strikeouts this year, 183 in 177 innings.
- 39:01And the man he's going to face is Henry Hank Aaron, a 24-home run, 71 RBIs.
- 39:07He grounded a shortstop. McDowell's first pitch from the big left-hander is strike one.
- 39:12Both Weaver of the American League and Hodges of the National started with the right-hander,
- 39:17and both have gone to left-handers as their second pitcher.
- 39:20One strike pitch to the right-handed Hank Aaron is way up high from McDowell, and it's one and one.
- 39:25I think we've talked about the other pitchers in this ball game so far,
- 39:28and said that they had good stuff, that they threw hard.
- 39:30But I think you have to look at Sam McDowell and say that he throws harder probably than anybody else in the ball game.
- 39:37One and one, and this time he changes on his speed, and it's outside, two and one.
- 39:41Down in the bullpen for the National League is Hoyt Wilhelm, who later on in the month will be 47 years old.
- 39:48And yet he's not the oldest player ever to play in an all-star game.
- 39:53You know who is?
- 39:56Two and one to count, Brown ball charging at his color.
- 39:59Mcdowell's off, has to make the throw, and has it on a fine play by McDowell,
- 40:04breaking across and actually throwing from foul territory down the third base line.
- 40:12This is a very fine play by McDowell. It's a tough play for the left-handed pitcher to make.
- 40:17He's going after the ball toward third base, facing the wrong way.
- 40:21He has to make a full circle to make the play and throw a good runner in Aaron out at first.
- 40:27One out now, and the last of the fourth inning of this scoreless all-star game.
- 40:30And the answer to the question is, who is the oldest to play in an all-star game?
- 40:34Leroy Satchel-Page, who was just 47 when he played in the all-star game.
- 40:40Tony Perez, who struck out swinging, leading off the second inning, up now, right-handed batter,
- 40:45with those 29 home runs and 90 RBIs, and swings and misses out of McDowell's fastball.
- 40:49And that is what you call smoke-sending.
- 40:53Big Sam McDowell.
- 40:55And when they had the higher mound and when he looked down at you, all six feet, five inches of him,
- 41:00quite an awesome man, because he throws hard.
- 41:03Back with another hard one, but it's inside. It's one and one.
- 41:07The charge against McDowell has been that he has tried to use too many pitches,
- 41:11but he can resort almost exclusively to the fastball.
- 41:16And they say this year, Sam is sticking with what he does best, and that's why he's here.
- 41:20Foul off to the right. It's one and two now to Perez.
- 41:24Alexander McDowell has a great fastball, and also has a great curveball,
- 41:28but he has been wanting to throw screwballs and change-ups and sliders,
- 41:34and occasionally even probably a knuckleball.
- 41:37And I think they've accused him of being a young Tom Edison on the mound,
- 41:41but as you say, this year Sam just keeps going out there and throwing hard,
- 41:45and done a great job for Cleveland.
- 41:48One and two to count.
- 41:50McDowell back and ready to throw, and has Perez striking out, swinging for the second time.
- 41:54McDowell first strikeout.
- 41:59Fourth strikeout for the National Lakers, and here's Rico Cardi,
- 42:02who drew a walk from Jim Palmer on four pitches.
- 42:07He's out on the last of the fourth of the scoreless ballgame.
- 42:10Leota Rocher coaching at third.
- 42:13Lumen Harris of Atlanta at first for the American League.
- 42:15Ralph Hawke of the Yankees is at first base,
- 42:17and Lefty Phillips of the surprising California Angels is over third.
- 42:21Gil Hodges manages the National Lakers, of course,
- 42:23as the Nets' Chief and Earl Weaver from Baltimore manages the American League.
- 42:28And we've got a scoreless game as Cardi, the right-hander, steps in
- 42:30and takes a strike right at the knees on the outside corner.
- 42:36Gaylord Perry, whose brother Jim Perry plays for the American League,
- 42:39Gaylord Perry to San Francisco Giants is stretching his knees
- 42:42and preparing to warm up down along the white field line.
- 42:45McDowell simply blew this one right past Cardi, whose swing was way behind time.
- 42:53The scoreboard thus far shows no balls and no strikes.
- 43:00Now the scoreboard has gone completely out as the ball punched down
- 43:03into that National League bullpen and now rebounds onto the field,
- 43:09where it's picked up out there by Frank Robinson.
- 43:12Two strikes to Rico Cardi with two out in the last of the fourth.
- 43:20Now it's a muggy night in Cincinnati, but nothing like what happened
- 43:22in Washington last year when the dugouts filled up with water
- 43:25and they had to play it on a Wednesday afternoon.
- 43:28Low at the knees, freehand bobbled the ball for the moment.
- 43:31Cardi looks back at Al Balik, who says it's ball one.
- 43:33One and two.
- 43:36There have been no changes other than a pinch hitter
- 43:39and the required pitching changes at the end of three.
- 43:44Both managers sticking with the lineups as the fans are voted.
- 43:48One-two pitch off the corner with a fastball and it's 2-2.
- 43:52I think you can tell that this is sort of a shakedown cruise for this ballpark.
- 43:56The scoreboard has broken down and they've got the score on the message board now.
- 44:04Peeling in Sam McDowell, ready for the 2-2 pitch to Cardi.
- 44:08Ground ball right back to McDowell, who can leap high because he's a tall man
- 44:12and easily throws him out and runs hits or errors at the end of four complete.
- 44:15American League nothing and the National League nothing.
- 44:20Jim Simpson with Sandy Koufax and Len Dillon back at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
- 44:25And now we have our first changes. Defensively, Pete Rose of Cincinnati has gone to right field.
- 44:30He's won the batting championship the last two years.
- 44:33And in left field it is Jim Hickman of the Chicago Cubs.
- 44:36A hitter getting better than 3-30.
- 44:38And we see Tony Believer of Minnesota warming up down on the bullpen
- 44:42and he obviously will come over in the last of this inning.
- 44:45Rose will bat first.
- 44:51While Hickman will bat fifth.
- 44:56Arlen Killebrew the batter to face Jim Merritt.
- 45:00Killebrew struck out to lead off the second inning.
- 45:02We've got no score. Merritt to left-hander throws the right-hander to Killebrew
- 45:05and it's ball on.
- 45:13And again Barlich calls for the ball.
- 45:15And Sandy that's the most we've seen.
- 45:17Anyone call for baseballs in recent games.
- 45:20Barlich must have inspected four or five of them thus far this evening.
- 45:25So a little unusual in that this field the ball should not get as dirty as it would on a normal field.
- 45:31Round ball passed Perez on one hop.
- 45:35Loved by Hickman of Chicago in left field and Killebrew has the second American Leaf hit.
- 45:40And the first off Jim Merritt.
- 45:43Killebrew is a real fine off-beat hitter.
- 45:46Now trying to change on him and Harmon hit the ball line drive into left field.
- 45:52I believe we're going to have a pinch runner now for Harmon.
- 45:54Tommy Harper has gone in to run.
- 45:57Killebrew is all done for the night with that base hit.
- 46:00Tommy Harper of course last year had a great year.
- 46:03Stole more bases in the American League than anybody since Ty Cobb way back in 1915 when he stole 96.
- 46:11Harper last year stole 73.
- 46:13And of course Harper having a great year this year in the solemn base department with nearly 50.
- 46:19Big Frank Howard takes low from Merritt.
- 46:22Howard a big right-hander batter.
- 46:24Merritt a left-handed pitcher.
- 46:27No score but the leadoff man Killebrew is single and Harper is running for it.
- 46:31Harper of course a representative of the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 46:35And with a good leadoff first base.
- 46:38Harper used to play for Cincinnati.
- 46:40And on that move to the plate as Howard swings and misses Harper was moving back to first base.
- 46:45Jim Merritt has a fine move to first base.
- 46:47He hasn't thrown over there yet and until he does Harper can't be too sure just how good that move is.
- 46:53So Merritt may not throw over there and just keep Harper guessing.
- 46:57One on one the count to Howard.
- 46:58Now he lost one over there.
- 46:59I think I said Harper had nearly 50 strikeouts.
- 47:01That is incorrect.
- 47:02He has 28.
- 47:04Howard struck out back in the second inning against Tom Siever.
- 47:10Wait.
- 47:11Siever throws inside.
- 47:12And it's two and one to Frank Howard of the Washington Semifinals wearing the gray traveling uniform with the red numbers and the red batting helmet.
- 47:22Don Kessinger has gone way back.
- 47:28All is in the dirt to Howard.
- 47:31And it's three and one.
- 47:33The National League has not given up a walk yet.
- 47:42Harper approached talking about his steals.
- 47:46Not his strikeouts.
- 47:48Tommy now ventures out to one foot on the artificial surface.
- 47:53And so Merritt's going to throw over there and Harper's back in plenty of time.
- 47:56Three and one to count to Howard.
- 47:57The leadoff batter here in the fifth inning of a scoreless all-star baseball game.
- 48:01Killibrews single.
- 48:02Harper has taken his place at first base and Howard is the second batter.
- 48:06The three and one pitch.
- 48:07Let's see if they've got him swinging.
- 48:08They do.
- 48:09Drive to left field.
- 48:10Not too deep.
- 48:11Back throws Kessinger.
- 48:12In comes Hickman.
- 48:13Hickman takes it for the first out.
- 48:19Allowed the big slugger to swing on the three-one pitch.
- 48:23And he flies to short left field.
- 48:25Harper retreats across the first base.
- 48:27And here comes Dave Johnson who flies to right field.
- 48:33Johnson on two-two.
- 48:36Pick a pitch.
- 48:38The National League top had a pitch out going for Harper at first base, but the National League top was strike three.
- 48:44It was not, and Johnson went on to fly to right field and end the inning.
- 48:48That was in the second.
- 48:51The applause you hear is that the scoreboard is working again.
- 48:55Merritt's ready to throw to Dave Johnson, but instead checks over at first base and Harper's back in plenty of time.
- 49:04Harper knows 73 stolen bases last year.
- 49:08That was with Seattle before he moved on over.
- 49:11Made a move as if to go, and Johnson puts one down the right field line and fouls territory over his island and also the second baseman Becker, and he takes it.
- 49:20Two out.
- 49:21So that's the second baseman's ball.
- 49:23If he can get to it, he has a better angle than the first baseman does.
- 49:26The first baseman has to turn around and go straight back down the line.
- 49:30Becker coming over from his position at second base, had a better shot at it, called Richie Allen off of it, and made the play.
- 49:37Well, Killebrew hits a changeup for a line drive single to left, but Princeton, Frank Howard has slid to short left, and Johnson has fouled out.
- 49:45Here's Bill Frehams to line to center field to open the third inning.
- 49:50No runs, two hits, no errors for the American League.
- 49:52No runs, one hit, no errors for the National League.
- 49:54Johnny Ventus throw is a good catcher down there, he's got it.
- 50:00Ventus puts the drive away.
- 50:01No runs, one hit, no errors, and thanks to Johnny Ventus throw, nobody left.
- 50:05In the middle of the fifth, it's still a quarter-foul game.
- 50:08This is Sandy Goffax with Jim Simpson and Len Dillon here in Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium at the 41st All-Star Game at the end of 4 1⁄2 innings.
- 50:17The score is still tied, the American League nothing and the National League nothing.
- 50:22And Sandy, now at the beginning of extra moves, Jerry Moses of Boston has replaced Bill Frehams as the catcher.
- 50:28Tony Oliva has gone to right field.
- 50:30Frank Robinson, a lot of folks thought he might not even play tonight, but that sore shoulder has moved from right field over to left field.
- 50:37And Brooks Robinson has gone in to play third base.
- 50:40So Moses to catcher, McHale still to pitcher, Blubpal at first, Davy Johnson at second, Luis Aparicio at short, Brooks Robinson at third, Frank Robinson at left,
- 50:49and as the center remains in center, Tony Oliva in right.
- 50:54And John Bench, who just gunned down Tommy Harper, who has 28 stolen bases this year and 73 last year, is the batter.
- 51:01Bench, last time up, struck out on the second inning.
- 51:05Scoreless ball game on a hot, muggy, but wonderful night at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 51:10The 41st Major League All-Star Game, the National Lakers have won it seven in a row, and it's scoreless now.
- 51:15McDowell throws her ball, and it's ball one.
- 51:18I think the American League found out last inning what everybody in the National League already knows,
- 51:22that Johnny Bench might have the best arm of any catcher in baseball.
- 51:26He has the best I've ever seen.
- 51:29McDowell is high at inside.
- 51:31To Bench, it's 2-0.
- 51:34Don Kessinger remains on deck.
- 51:39Davy Johnson is off what would be the skin of the infield.
- 51:42Bench is way out in front.
- 51:46Swinging, and it's 2-1.
- 51:48Johnson is back past the skin of the infield, whereas Aparicio, who's on the left side,
- 51:55where Bench might be able to pull the ball, is in on what would be the skin of the infield.
- 51:59He pulls this one deep, but it's very foul.
- 52:01No question, way out in front of the pitch, and pulled it deep into the upper seats.
- 52:07Still, I think Aparicio has to play a little shallower than some of the other infielders.
- 52:12His arm has gone back a little bit on him with time.
- 52:16He doesn't throw as well as he used to, and if he played too deep,
- 52:19he could not throw some fellows out.
- 52:21There's better runners on balls hit deep in the hole.
- 52:24Bench strikes out swinging on a McDowell fastball in the outside corner.
- 52:28Second time he's gone down.
- 52:29First time against Palmer.
- 52:30This time against the left-hander Sam McDowell.
- 52:33McDowell has his second strikeout, and that brings up Don Kessinger
- 52:36on the Chicago Cubs playing shortstop, and he's singled up the middle.
- 52:39There's only other time at bat for his first all-star hit in six appearances at the plate.
- 52:52There have been five National League strikeouts.
- 52:54Perez has struck out twice, and Bench's teammate with Cincinnati has also struck out twice.
- 52:59Dallas pitch is blown away from Kessinger, ball on.
- 53:05Kessinger a 281 hitter.
- 53:09With the Chicago Cubs, McDowell is ready again.
- 53:11Drive, and Kessinger's got a second base hit right up the middle.
- 53:14Line drive on one hop, he's in the center field.
- 53:22Dallas scoreboard shows the National League has two hits.
- 53:25Don Kessinger has them both.
- 53:28Here's Glenn Beckers, second baseman with the Cubs hitting a 261,
- 53:31which is much below Glenn's normal average in the National League the last four years.
- 53:36He's been hitting 287, 280, 294, and last year 291.
- 53:41As we said, very tough to strike out.
- 53:44Very close stance. His right foot is almost out of the batter's box.
- 53:47Strike at the knees for McDowell.
- 53:55Here was one out, and Leo DeRozier coaching at third,
- 53:58and Kessinger and Beckert of the Cubs, so all year they work so well with the hit and run.
- 54:03It wouldn't be too surprising to see that come up here in this situation.
- 54:07Strike, it's strike two, both of them called, both of them at the knees,
- 54:10and Kessinger on first base is telling Leo DeRozier to move down a little bit
- 54:14because looking past McDowell he can't see him.
- 54:17And so now DeRozier is leaning down so that Kessinger can see his signs
- 54:21looking across the diamond to his manager with the Cubs,
- 54:24and tonight the third base coach, Leo DeRozier.
- 54:27Strike to Beckert, Kessinger leads off.
- 54:30McDowell throws, ball right back up the middle, picks up a second base by Johnson.
- 54:33He has no play at first base because if he stepped on second,
- 54:36the ball nearly squirted out of his glove.
- 54:38So he's settled for the fourth play, they're two down,
- 54:41and we're going to have another pinch hitter.
- 54:43As he comes out of the dugout, it looks like Dennis Manke of the Atlanta Braves.
- 54:55Manke having a great year, hitting a 3.15,
- 54:58and when they compared what the ballplayers wanted on the All-Star teams,
- 55:02how their votes would have gone as opposed to how the fans went,
- 55:05the ballplayers said Dennis Manke was their number one choice at shortstop.
- 55:09But for fans they said Don Kessinger.
- 55:11Both good men, Manke of course batting for Merritt who is all through,
- 55:15we'll give you his record at the moment, inside and low on the first pitch to Manke.
- 55:29Merritt only worked two innings, struck out one, gave up one hit, walked nobody,
- 55:32and of course this is the scoreless game.
- 55:34Manke fouls the ball off and bounds into the American League dugout,
- 55:39and now bounces back out and Leodorosha retrieves two out with Beckert on a first base,
- 55:44reaching down the fourth flight.
- 55:49No runs, two hits, no errors for the American League,
- 55:51no runs, two hits, no errors for the National League.
- 55:53We are in the last of the fifth at Cincinnati,
- 55:55lowered in the dirt and blocked nicely by the new catcher, Jerry Moses,
- 55:57at the Boston Red Sox, who took over after Phil Frehan caught the first four innings.
- 56:07McDowell working his second inning, Jim Palmer started, worked three without damage,
- 56:11the American League Tom Seaver most effective in the three innings he worked as a starter for the National League.
- 56:17Back with a high pitch is McDowell, and it's three and one to the pinch hit at Dennis Manke, hitting a 315.
- 56:26There has not been an extra base hit, there has not been a run score.
- 56:34Beckert just a step or two now off first base, Powell holding on and McDowell peering in for the side of Jerry Moses.
- 56:41At the three one pitch it's up high and there's the walk given up by McDowell,
- 56:45here's first and the second throw in by the National League.
- 56:48As Beckert moves on down to second base and Rudy Mays comes to bat.
- 56:54I don't think if Senator McDowell makes any mistakes, that's the kind of mistakes he makes.
- 56:58With his great stuff sometimes he'll get behind hitters, from there he was three and one to Dennis Manke.
- 57:03He didn't want to just come in with the fastball and let Manke hit it, so he tried to throw the curve ball.
- 57:08He does not get that over as well and he walked Manke and all of a sudden you're in a little bit of trouble.
- 57:13In fact you are in trouble anytime Willie Mays comes to the plate.
- 57:18High pitch, and that is not Jerry Moses behind the plate, that is Ray Fawcett, we beg your pardon.
- 57:30Fawcett Cleveland, a young catcher.
- 57:33McDowell looking down, one and all, back to throw again, very high again, two and all.
- 57:51Two and all with two out, Beckert on at second base, Manke on at first base.
- 57:56Strikes, good fastball, chest high to Willie Mays, it's two and one.
- 58:02Now this is the second time that the National League has had a man as far as second base.
- 58:06And the same combination, a walk and a single and a second, a single and a walk here in the fifth.
- 58:12But nobody's gotten any further than that.
- 58:18Up high with the fastball again and it's three and one.
- 58:22And remember it's on a three and one pitch, but Manke, as Sandy told you, tried the curve ball.
- 58:28McDowell did and Manke drew the walk.
- 58:31Now with two out, and Mays has struck out and fouled out the batter.
- 58:37Right hander against the left hander McDowell, let's see what he throws.
- 58:39He comes back with a fastball and Mays takes a big swing and a big miss.
- 58:45He did not come back with the curve that time, Sandy, on three and one.
- 58:49I don't think he can afford to walk another hitter now.
- 58:52You get yourself into enough trouble when you walk the man into scoring position.
- 58:56And now with Mays at the plate, I don't think he can go any further.
- 58:59He just threw his best pitch, which was the fastball.
- 59:05Dive high in the air as everybody was running on the pitch, it's fouled behind the plate.
- 59:09Fosse is back and looking up, but it's well in the seats.
- 59:13McDowell is about 30 or 40 feet away from President Nixon.
- 59:26Now the count remains three and two to Willie Mays.
- 59:39McDowell is ready looking in.
- 59:41The runners are going again and again and fouled out.
- 59:44Naturally with two out and three and two, those runners are going to be taking off with every pitch.
- 59:51It's an interesting duel right now.
- 59:53McDowell is just reaching back, Grand 2, throwing the ball as hard as he can.
- 59:57The fellow at the plate, Willie Mays, is just standing there and he's digging in with both feet and swinging as hard as he can.
- 1:00:03And as hard as Sam's throwing and Willie's swinging, if he makes contact, he's going to hit the ball.
- 1:00:08Willie's in the second deck here.
- 1:00:11Mays digging in again on three-two, Seelow.
- 1:00:14Beckett moving away from second, Menke away from first, McGowlin of the stretch, they're running.
- 1:00:19Here's the pitch and it's fouled back again.
- 1:00:23And we'll repeat, it is a very hot and humid night.
- 1:00:27McDowell is working hard, Mays is working hard, and Beckett and Menke are running hard.
- 1:00:35Fast to the fifth, no score in the 41st Major League All-Star Game.
- 1:00:41The National League has won 22, the American League 17 has been one tie, the National League has won the last seven in a row.
- 1:00:53Lies high in the air, but this might be playable.
- 1:00:56By home plate, overcomes the third baseman, Brooks Robinson, and he finally puts it away.
- 1:01:01No runs, one hit, no errors, and two men left. At the end of five, there's no source.
- 1:01:11This is Sandy Koufax along with Jim Simpson and Len Dillon at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
- 1:01:16The end of five innings is for nothing, nothing.
- 1:01:18For the American League, no runs on two hits and no errors, the National League identical total.
- 1:01:23No runs, two hits, and no errors.
- 1:01:27Gaylord Terry is still on the pitch.
- 1:01:29Dennis Menke, who batted for the pitcher and walk, has gone into play second base.
- 1:01:34Beckett is out.
- 1:01:36They have not made announcements.
- 1:01:37As you know, this is the brand new Riverfront Stadium, and the PA system is not here,
- 1:01:41and we're having to pick up these newcomers as quickly as possible.
- 1:01:44It looks like Clarence Gaston has gone into play in center field.
- 1:01:49First pick by Foxey is hit to right field for base hit.
- 1:01:52Rose is over, picks it up, and throws in to Menke at second base who cuts it off.
- 1:02:03So young Ray Foxey of the Cleveland Indians drills a single to right field.
- 1:02:12Sam McDowell of Cleveland will bat for himself.
- 1:02:21Gaylord Terry this year has won 13 ball games, lost eight, throws low,
- 1:02:25but it's up the knees to the giant Sam McDowell, strike one.
- 1:02:30Sure, I have to think that this is one of the few all-star games that I've seen Willie Maeve
- 1:02:34start that he hasn't gone all the way.
- 1:02:36Usually Willie comes to this ball game, wants to play the full ball game,
- 1:02:40enjoys playing in it, and this is one of the few years where he hasn't.
- 1:02:44McDowell's foot is just a bump, foul-tipped the ball,
- 1:02:47and the ball got passed bench and rolled back,
- 1:02:49and so Barlich ends with a new ball, and it's two strikes to McDowell,
- 1:02:52and McDowell stares down to lefty Phillips to see what the third-base coach,
- 1:02:57manager of the California Angels, says to do on the two-strike pitch.
- 1:03:01But Foxey at first base.
- 1:03:05Now, now score this ball game from the top of the sixth.
- 1:03:10McDowell strikes south, but the ball is foul-tipped and bench drops it,
- 1:03:14and therefore he's alive again.
- 1:03:17Donnie Bench, who has thrown out a runner, Tommy Harper could not hold on to that swinging strike
- 1:03:21for he was slightly foul-skipped by McDowell.
- 1:03:24In field, a double play depth with two strikes on Sam McDowell.
- 1:03:30Foxey leading off at first base.
- 1:03:32McDowell squared around as if to bump, but the pitch was outside, and it's one and two.
- 1:03:37Even with two strikes, he was going to bump.
- 1:03:40The flag in right center field, it was blowing, remember we told you, from center toward right?
- 1:03:45It's simply hanging there now, and it's hot and muggy night.
- 1:03:48But no chance of rain, and thus far scoreless all-star game.
- 1:03:52McDowell's going to bun again at fair, picked up by Perry, who will go to first for sacrifice works.
- 1:03:56And for the first time, the American League has somebody as far as second base.
- 1:04:01Here's a fine bun by McDowell, and Earl Weaver obviously feeling that this is going to be a one-run ball game.
- 1:04:07He's trying right here in the top of the sixth inning to get that one run,
- 1:04:11and bunning with a pitcher with two strikes.
- 1:04:13He's got a man in scoring position in the top of his lineup coming up.
- 1:04:18Now, Foxey's down at second base, and Luis Aparicio making his first start and his first appearance since 1963.
- 1:04:26The all-star game, Luis is 36 years old, but having a great year hitting 313, right-hander steps in to face Perry.
- 1:04:34Curveball, and he swings and misses.
- 1:04:37Back one.
- 1:04:42Foxey's base hit the right field with a line shot off Perry,
- 1:04:46and now Perry wants to check on his sign for Johnny Bench who walks out to meet him halfway.
- 1:04:50I think Perry and Bench would like to just check on what signs they're using with a man at second base.
- 1:04:56A little problem here, if you make a mistake in signs, it ends up with a pass ball or a wild fish, and the runner goes to third.
- 1:05:03With less than two out, that's a big difference in your situation in the ball game.
- 1:05:08Now, third, Perry of San Francisco peers in, looks back and throws.
- 1:05:12The ball is hit to right center field.
- 1:05:14Over goes Pete Rose, now slowing down, stops there.
- 1:05:17Foxey has to retreat to second base as Rose throws to the cutoff man, Lenky.
- 1:05:21They're now two down, and Foxey is still at second with Kyle Yastremski due up.
- 1:05:30Yastremski single up the middle and then hit the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning from Jim Merritt
- 1:05:37to Woody Mays deep right next to the 4-0-4 sign in center field.
- 1:05:42And with that in mind, Johnny Bench walks out to tell something else to Gaylord Perry.
- 1:05:47I think in this situation here, you may not see the intentional pass.
- 1:05:51Gaylord Perry, having been around a few years, there's still something that players would sometimes like to call pitching around the hitter.
- 1:05:59Frank Robinson is nobody that you'd want to pitch to, but he's right-handed,
- 1:06:03and Gaylord Perry being a right-hander, he might rather pitch to Robinson than Yastremski.
- 1:06:08Well, as Gaylord Perry tries to get out of this inning without a run, his brother, Jim Perry, now goes to the American League bullpen to warm up.
- 1:06:18Two out in the sixth inning, no score.
- 1:06:20Yastremski drills one into short center field.
- 1:06:23Around third base comes Foxey.
- 1:06:24The ball is picked up, they'll have to go to second.
- 1:06:26Yastremski fell down, and it's one to nothing, the American League.
- 1:06:30Yastremski again hitting the first pitch.
- 1:06:33Jim Yastremski was jammed by that pitch.
- 1:06:35He didn't hit it hard.
- 1:06:36He hit it hard enough to get it over the infield in the center field for base hit, and drove in the only run.
- 1:06:42I'm not sure that Gaylord Perry hadn't tried to make the ball bad, but Yastremski hit it anyway.
- 1:06:49One to nothing.
- 1:06:50The American League draws the first score.
- 1:06:52In the sixth inning, with two out, Yastremski again hitting the first pitch.
- 1:06:56And here is Frank Robinson, who's been down twice on strikeouts, once swinging in the first and called out in the fourth.
- 1:07:04And a check at first base.
- 1:07:07And very nearly, Yastremski, who's a good base runner, and he has stolen 16 bases this year, was nearly picked up.
- 1:07:18Perry ready to throw up, there's a clear ball.
- 1:07:20Now, Bench goes down to first, and nearly has him again.
- 1:07:25Donnie Bench is showing us that arm that has made him the National League All-Star catcher.
- 1:07:30And some say one of the greatest, if not the greatest, ever.
- 1:07:34And he's 22 years old.
- 1:07:37Perry throws again, ground ball.
- 1:07:39That second base, Mankiewicz, for it.
- 1:07:41Easy throw to first base, but the American League scored one run on two hits, no errors in one left.
- 1:07:46In the middle of the sixth, we have a score.
- 1:07:48The American League won the National League nothing.
- 1:07:50The score at the end of five and a half is the American League one run, four hits and no errors.
- 1:07:54The National League, no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:07:57Jim?
- 1:07:58Another change, and as we said, there are going to be lots of them.
- 1:08:01We'll pick them up as fast as we can.
- 1:08:03Willie Horton of Detroit has moved in to play left field.
- 1:08:06Robinson is out.
- 1:08:08Yastremski remains in center.
- 1:08:09Leave, of course, is over and right.
- 1:08:11McAllen, who has flied deep to right and lined up a second baseman to batter the Cardinals, first baseman.
- 1:08:16McDowell, who could win this, throws, and Allen fouls it off to the left.
- 1:08:21Dowell came in on the fourth inning.
- 1:08:22This is the last inning he can work.
- 1:08:25And knowing that, he can leave leading, but he also knows that he must face Allen, Rose, and Perez.
- 1:08:35And that's a tough way to go.
- 1:08:38One strike, back again with the fastball.
- 1:08:40Outside it's one and one to Allen in his fourth All-Star game.
- 1:08:44Twenty-five home runs this year, 72 out of the eyes leading the Cardinals.
- 1:08:52McDowell, like everybody else before him and many of the spectators here, simply bathed with perspiration,
- 1:08:57comes back again and throws with his fastball up high.
- 1:09:02You know, they say those who are in first place at All-Star break are going to win it all since Matty leads in the Western Division of the National League by 10,
- 1:09:08Pittsburgh by game and a half in the Eastern Division over in New York,
- 1:09:11and actually Baltimore by six over Detroit in the East, Minnesota by five over California in the West.
- 1:09:16Allen fouls one down the line.
- 1:09:18Brooks Robinson gives chase also as Willie Horton over there, and they watch it drop at the seats about 15 rows deep.
- 1:09:24It's 2-2 to Allen.
- 1:09:27Of course tomorrow's an out day as these players go back either to home or to join their teams on the road.
- 1:09:33And the Major League continues with the second half of the season in the drive for the Division pennants,
- 1:09:38the league championships and the World Series on Thursday.
- 1:09:43One run, four hits, no errors for the American League.
- 1:09:45No runs, two hits, no errors for the National.
- 1:09:472-2 to Allen. McDowell throws fastball, but it's too high.
- 1:09:50It's 3-2.
- 1:09:53McDowell walked the man. Palmer, the starter for the American League, walked the man.
- 1:09:57McDonough struck out two, giving up the hit. Palmer struck out three, gave up the hit.
- 1:10:08Sam is ready and comes back and throws and misses outside at 12-4.
- 1:10:14Allen walks with Pete Rose, two-time nationally-cowling champion, member of the Cincinnati Reds, switch hitter coming your way.
- 1:10:29We get out of the situation here where Sam walked the leadoff hitter in the inning,
- 1:10:34especially with only a one-run lead. That can get you in trouble.
- 1:10:37A good ball touch and score a run just by playing the game the right way.
- 1:10:42You don't even have to get a base hit once that leadoff man gets on.
- 1:10:45If they get him over to second, a ground ball, a fly ball, and they score a run.
- 1:10:50McDowell is high and he trips a little bit on the mound with his first pitch, and it's ball one to Rose.
- 1:10:55He's hitting 3-23. Out here at this Brandy Riverfront Stadium, he's hitting well over 400 in the few games he's played here.
- 1:11:01He loves it. This is not only a national account, it's a Cincinnati town, and the Cincinnati player, Rose, is at bat.
- 1:11:07McDowell is ready. He throws one and 0, drives foul down the right field line, deep in the seats.
- 1:11:12As we said earlier, I think Keith would really love this new ballpark.
- 1:11:15He doesn't have great power. He doesn't hit a lot of home runs. He's a spray hitter.
- 1:11:19And in a ballpark like this, with the big outfield expanses and the artificial surface, all the outfielders have to play a little deeper.
- 1:11:26So he's going to have a lot more chance to drop balls in front of the outfielders and between them.
- 1:11:32McDowell stares over it out on the first base. The scoreboard has been saying charge and go, go, go.
- 1:11:37The American League lead by a run. McDowell throws a fast ball. It's too low, but he really had something on that one, and it's 2-1.
- 1:11:43Sure, I think anytime Sam throws a fast ball, he's really throwing well. He's got just a great fast ball, and he uses it well.
- 1:11:51His only problem is control, and sometimes he gets himself in trouble.
- 1:11:572-1, McDowell staring in. And the last of the six. The National League has won the last seven in a row, but the trend on this one, one to nothing.
- 1:12:06No swings and misses. It's 2-2.
- 1:12:12Three members of the All-Star infield are Baltimore Orioles, Boob Pallette first, Davey Johnson at second, and Brooks Robinson at third.
- 1:12:19The fourth member is Luis Aparicio at shortstop. Ray Fossey of Cleveland, McKetchers, Sam McDowell of Cleveland, the pitcher, Woody Horton of Detroit,
- 1:12:28and left, Carl DeStrumsky of Boston in center, and in right field, Tony Oliva of Minnesota.
- 1:12:362-2, none out. Down on the first base.
- 1:12:41McDowell taking a long time now between pitchers. Last inning, he can't pitch, comes back with a breaking pitch, and misses.
- 1:12:47And it goes all the way again, 3-2.
- 1:12:50Dave McDonnelly of Baltimore has now joined Jim Perry in the bullpen for the American League.
- 1:12:58Steve, I think we have a situation again where 3-2 is not an even count. The pitcher is behind. He must get the ball over.
- 1:13:05No pitcher likes to keep going to 3-2.
- 1:13:08The throw low, and he is on the walk. He took a half swing, and Charlie Hussles naturally runs to first base.
- 1:13:16And out comes Earl Weaver. Earl Weaver has said that he wants to win this game, and he's walking up very quickly with McDonnell after walking the first two men, both on 3-2 counts.
- 1:13:25Amazing proof.
- 1:13:27I don't know, but I would think that in this situation, McDowell is the man I'd have to see pitch to Perez.
- 1:13:33Perez is a fine off-speed hitter. He hits the breaking ball, he hits the off-speed pitchers very well.
- 1:13:39If he has any trouble, I think it's up with the fastball that the pitcher gets in on him.
- 1:13:43And of the three pitchers that the American League has available now in warming up, I'd have to think that the one on the mound right now has got the best fastball, and he'd have to pitch to Perez for me.
- 1:13:54Well, apparently for Earl Weaver also, as Weaver runs back to the dugout, and McDowell stays on.
- 1:14:00He went to 3-2 on both Allen and Rose, and walked them both. And now Tony Perez, who has struck out twice, swinging.
- 1:14:09In a home run that won the 67 game, an extra inning, he hits a drive foul down the right field line and hit it hard.
- 1:14:19Perez looks down to DeRosier, who gives him the signs at third base.
- 1:14:23McNally and Perry continue to warm in the American League bullpen.
- 1:14:29Fifty-one thousand plus here, along with the president of the United States and his family, McDonnell throws low and away.
- 1:14:35And it's one and one to Tony Perez, who has 29 home runs and 90 RBIs, and is hitting.356.
- 1:14:41I don't think that would make a bit of difference if this were a regular season game. His manager would have to have him bunting.
- 1:14:47He's down by one. He's got to stay out of the double play.
- 1:14:50But here in an all-star game, the people want to see Perez hit. So manager Gil Hodges has got to let him hit.
- 1:14:55One-one count hits it high in the air and in the infield. Johnson backs up, waves everybody away, makes no mistake about that, trails the ball, and now gloves it.
- 1:15:04And Brooks Robinson runs all the way to second base, hoping to get Alan off second base after the catch.
- 1:15:10One down and Jim Hickman of Chicago up for the first time.
- 1:15:16Hickman hitting.335, five years with the Mets.
- 1:15:29One of the original Mets over September of last year, and the only part of this year, Hickman has been Mr. It for the Chicago Cubs, despite the fact that Billy Williams is having one of his greatest years ever.
- 1:15:40But Gil Hodges said when it came down to the two, Hickman's been the man that makes them go.
- 1:15:43Fosse blocks the pitch. It's in the dirt for McDowell. Ball one to Hickman.
- 1:15:54Hickman, who is 33 years old, is playing in his first All-Star game.
- 1:15:59And over the last 15 games of the regular National League season, has been hitting at a.367 clip.
- 1:16:07One-on-one count showing one to nothing to score. The American League, McDowell ready to throw and strike.
- 1:16:12Finally on the inside corner, one and one.
- 1:16:17Allen, who drew a walk, is on second. Rose, who drew a walk, is on at first.
- 1:16:28McDowell taking his time. Kerry and Settlemire, or rather Kerry and McNally, continue to throw.
- 1:16:33And Dick Geetz and Bill Grabakowicz begin to warm up a little bit for the National League. They are not pitchers.
- 1:16:41Hickman pulled on a pitch, swings, and it's one and two.
- 1:16:52The American League looking for the double play.
- 1:16:57Allen leads off at second. Rose takes a few more steps off first. McDowell back to throw.
- 1:17:02Fly ball to short right field. Davy Johnson again goes out and waves everybody away.
- 1:17:06Taps his glove and he's made the last two put outs. Allen retreats to second. Rose back to first.
- 1:17:11And Donnie Bench without it.
- 1:17:15Those last two outs show you what a good fast ball can do for you.
- 1:17:19Sam got in trouble. He got himself in trouble.
- 1:17:22And McDowell just reached back, threw a little harder, threw good fast balls to the next two hitters,
- 1:17:27and got them both to pop it up to the second baseman.
- 1:17:29Neither Perez nor Hickman could pull the ball. Couldn't keep hitting the ball on the fifth.
- 1:17:34Donnie Bench has struck out swinging twice.
- 1:17:39The last time it was McDowell who got it. Sam now trying to pitch out of a jam
- 1:17:44and protect the one-to-nothing American League League.
- 1:17:46We're in the last of the sixth inning of a low-scoring all-star game.
- 1:17:53First pitch for McDowell is outside ball one.
- 1:17:58Now Tony Perez has struck out twice and popped up.
- 1:18:01Donnie Bench has struck out twice, but he's also done down Tommy Harper trying to steal,
- 1:18:05but the Cincinnati fans would dearly love to see Bench come up with a clutch hit here
- 1:18:08and at least tie the game.
- 1:18:10Remember, he has 28 home runs and 79 RBI.
- 1:18:14McDowell throws in an off-speed pitch. He swings and misses. Strike one.
- 1:18:18One-on-one, the 10.
- 1:18:24Jim Sam McDowell is very successful when he uses the change and when he gets it over.
- 1:18:29And as we said earlier, sometimes he's tempted to use it a little too much.
- 1:18:32It's only good because of how good his fastball is.
- 1:18:35And I think if Sam goes too, too often, then he gets a little in trouble.
- 1:18:39Swings and misses of a fastball this time. It's one and two.
- 1:18:44Bench swinging hard.
- 1:18:49The Cincinnati players love to go for defenses and you can tell it by the number of home runs they've hit.
- 1:18:54Rez, for example, 29. Bench, 28.
- 1:18:5951,838 looking on at the new Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
- 1:19:04One-two, the count. McDowell throws, change, and has him swinging.
- 1:19:08Bench is struck out for the third time. The first two men get on,
- 1:19:11but then McDowell gets two on pop-ups to the second baseman and strikes out the dangerous Johnny Bench.
- 1:19:16At the end of sixth, the American League won, the National League nothing that counts.
- 1:19:21We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:19:25Hello again from Cincinnati, Ohio, the brand new Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:19:28We've had quite a few changes and we'll give them to you in a moment.
- 1:19:31The American League one run on four hits, no errors. The National League no runs, just two hits and no errors.
- 1:19:36As we move to the top of the seventh, Rueb Tau will be the batter.
- 1:19:39But Dick Heats of San Francisco is in the catch replacing Johnny Bench who struck out three times.
- 1:19:44Bill Grabokowicz of the Dodgers replaces another Cincinnati Red, Tony Perez at third base.
- 1:19:50And then Harold Harrelson making his first appearance also as an all-star as our Dietz and Grabokowicz goes in at shortstop.
- 1:19:57So it is Allen at first base, Menke at second, Harrelson of the Nets at short,
- 1:20:02Grabokowicz of the Dodgers at third, Dietz behind the plate, Perry Stilderbicher, Hickman in left, Gaston in center, Rosen right.
- 1:20:08Now swings and fouls the first one in the dirt at the plate strike one.
- 1:20:13He popped out to Perez back in the first and fly the short center in the fourth, off for the third time.
- 1:20:20Leads the American League in RBIs with 73, 320 batting average and 23 home runs.
- 1:20:31Big pitch way outside and then dropped by Dick Dietz.
- 1:20:35Dietz was given a $90,000 bonus from the Giants.
- 1:20:39He's in his fourth full season with San Francisco. Last year he hit 230 but is having a great year this year.
- 1:20:46And his fourth in the National League in RBIs making his first all-star appearance.
- 1:20:51One and one, hit high and foul. Dietz comes back for it but looks like he'll make the seats and make it by 20, which it does.
- 1:20:59It's one and two to Boob Town.
- 1:21:06The only right-hander is going now and it is Jim Perry, the brother of Gaylord Perry, down in the American League bullpen
- 1:21:13and a fellow by the name of Gibson, first name Bob of St. Louis, forms up in the National League bullpen.
- 1:21:23One and two on a steamy, steamy night but an exciting night in Cincinnati.
- 1:21:27They're proud of the new stadium and they're proud to have the all-star game here.
- 1:21:31And what a setting for it.
- 1:21:35Perry, taking a long time, is now set to throw with a one-two count to Powell.
- 1:21:39Swings rounds it right back to Gaylord who takes his time, lets Powell run a little bit,
- 1:21:43and then tosses it over to Allen for the first out of the seventh.
- 1:21:56Up for the first time is Butch Robinson who went in to play defense, replacing Killebrew.
- 1:22:02Robinson, of course, has been in many all-star games before.
- 1:22:06Third baseman, Golden Glove winner, many times over with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:22:12Been in 13 all-star games before.
- 1:22:14And lines the ball over the head of Menke in the short right center field.
- 1:22:18Butch Robinson has a base hit.
- 1:22:19Gaston throws it in on one hop and oh, it bounces up and hits Menke in the face.
- 1:22:24Dennis Menke on that hop off that artificial turf has hit in the face on the relay throw from Gaston.
- 1:22:29Allison is over and the trainer goes out and Gil Hotchis now goes out along with Leota Rocha.
- 1:22:35Jim, I think that's the thing that the players worry about.
- 1:22:38The ball is so quick off the artificial surface,
- 1:22:42Gaston picked up the ball and made the throw in and threw it in on one hop.
- 1:22:46Normally the ball would sort of slow up a little bit,
- 1:22:50but this hit on that artificial surface and just skipped on Menke.
- 1:22:53He didn't have a chance.
- 1:22:54It hit him right in the mouth it looked like.
- 1:22:57And the trainer is out there now looking at Dennis and he just can only hope that he isn't hurt too seriously.
- 1:23:04He, I would think, would be more used to it than anybody else playing for Houston where they have the astroturf all the time.
- 1:23:11But there's a limit to how fast your reactions can go and how quickly you can get your glove up in front of a ball.
- 1:23:18Menke says he'll stay in.
- 1:23:20Roy White of the New York Yankees was there earlier this evening.
- 1:23:23He has not made an appearance.
- 1:23:24And we don't know whether or not Roy will be able to.
- 1:23:27He was having his picture taken, a line dropped at one hop and hit him on the underside of his right arm.
- 1:23:37Well, there's only one man in major league history that has won batting titles his first two times,
- 1:23:42first two years in the major leagues.
- 1:23:44His name is Tony Oliva and he's at bat now hitting a 282.
- 1:23:48That's Janet Swinger from the Minnesota Twins to face Perry with Brooks Robinson down at first base.
- 1:23:581-0 the American League. Gaylord Perry is ready and throws outside.
- 1:24:01Perry now working with the battery-made it is, Dick Dease.
- 1:24:04One run, five hits, no errors for the American League.
- 1:24:07No runs, just two hits, no errors for the National League, which has won the last seven All-Star games in a row.
- 1:24:13Oliva steps back in now.
- 1:24:19Tony can go with the bits to all fields and with power.
- 1:24:22Lean toward an outside pitch, but let it go outside for a two-and-o-count.
- 1:24:33Tony came up in 1964, won the batting title as a rookie.
- 1:24:36Then won it again in 65 and since then has been second twice and third once despite some injuries.
- 1:24:43Perry throws again off the corner to Oliva and Gaylord is down three-and-oh.
- 1:24:52The American League hasn't been gifted with a base on balls yet.
- 1:24:59And on three-and-oh Oliva has looked down to his coach, manager Lefty Phillips of California Third Base,
- 1:25:05ready and he is simply taking all away in a strike one.
- 1:25:08Now a three-and-one and one out and Butch Robinson, who does not have great speed on a first base.
- 1:25:14Oliva takes time to step out to look down at Lefty Phillips.
- 1:25:25Tony is back in and Gaylord has stared in.
- 1:25:27In the stretch and throws and on three-and-one he is way outside and there's the first walk given up by the National League
- 1:25:32and Robinson moves down to second base. Bob Gibson continues to warm up.
- 1:25:45Perry has given up three hits in the only run of the game and struck out no one and now has given up his first walk.
- 1:25:50And Davy Johnson, starting because Rod Carew of Minnesota, who was voted as the All-Star Second Baseman, is injured, is up.
- 1:25:58Davy is flad to right and fouled out to the second baseman.
- 1:26:05Ball outside from Perry and Gaylord kicks up dust at the mound. He didn't think it was a ball. One-and-oh.
- 1:26:12Robinson on at second, Oliva on at first. The American League won. The National League nothing.
- 1:26:16We're in the seventh inning.
- 1:26:20Perry ready to throw again. Sidearm pitch this time and he has missed again just off the corner and stares in at Al Barley.
- 1:26:27I don't think Gaylord Perry is too happy about the call on those pitches.
- 1:26:31There's always a tendency on all pitchers when you're in trouble to want everything and a pitch that you'd want when you're in trouble
- 1:26:37you just sort of ignore if it was called a ball with nobody on.
- 1:26:41Two-and-oh right down the middle and it's two-and-one.
- 1:26:51The National League fans here and they keep waiting for the National League to explode.
- 1:26:55Thus far there's only been one run scored and the American League did that.
- 1:26:59Perry ready and throws again and has another called strike. Two-two.
- 1:27:03Two that have just missed and two this last one Davy Johnson turned and questioned the umpire that it was a strike.
- 1:27:14Only run of the ball game driven in by Carl Yostemsky who's single for a second hit of the night.
- 1:27:19He is also central center fielder very deep to the wall.
- 1:27:23Next pitch by Perry misses and it's all the way on Davy Johnson three-and-two with one out.
- 1:27:29See whether they're running or hanging close on three-and-two with just one out.
- 1:27:34Ralph Hoff walks over and says something to leave at first base.
- 1:27:39Off the coach at first. Perry's turning back. They are not running on the pitch.
- 1:27:44Intensely fouled by Johnson. Throw it still three-two.
- 1:27:53Nobody now throwing for the American League.
- 1:27:56Although we are going to get a change because Mcdowell has worked his three innings while Gibson continues to throw for the National League.
- 1:28:04Three-two pitch again. Down the middle short right field overcomes Pete Rose.
- 1:28:09He uses a tap near the line. It's foul ball in the bullseye. Dennis Menke also back in.
- 1:28:14Brooks Robinson very nearly home. And Davy Johnson almost to second base.
- 1:28:20David does not strike out a lot but even so Brooks is not a good baserunner. He's a good baserunner.
- 1:28:25He doesn't have great speed and it's awfully difficult to turn him loose in case Davy does take a third strike or swing and miss.
- 1:28:32Brooks wouldn't have much chance of beating a play at third.
- 1:28:38Three-two again. One out.
- 1:28:41Perry throws right up the middle and it's knocked down by Harrelson.
- 1:28:45Picked up by Menke. Can't get it. Everybody's safe.
- 1:28:48Harrelson saved the run. Bases are loaded.
- 1:28:54That's the play for infielders. They must make with a man on second.
- 1:28:58A lot of times the fellow will dive and knock a ball down.
- 1:29:02He knows he can't throw anybody out but he has to keep it from going through into the outfield. But Harrelson made a fine play just knocking the ball down.
- 1:29:10They almost made a good enough play to get a lead that second out of it.
- 1:29:14One run, six hits, no errors for the American League and they're threatening to get one out.
- 1:29:18No one's two hits, no errors for the National League and here is Fossey who's single and scored the only run and he is completely drenched.
- 1:29:25The catcher from the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:29:27Bases loaded. Ball outside.
- 1:29:32Joe Horner of the Phillies, former Cardinal grade, has joined his former teammate Gibson.
- 1:29:37Horner's a left-hander and begins to throw.
- 1:29:40Bases loaded with one out.
- 1:29:42The National League infield looking for the double play to get out of the inning.
- 1:29:47Fossey, I want to tell you, he is completely drenched.
- 1:29:50Perry ready. Throws. This is the corner. It's 2-0.
- 1:29:54I think again, Gaylord, not very happy with that call, Jim, but I think everybody in the ballpark may disagree with Al Barlich,
- 1:30:04but he's got the best look at it and after 30 years of being a professional umpire and a great one, I think he's probably right.
- 1:30:11Perry ready again, trying to come in with a pitch with something that Fossey can't hit.
- 1:30:15Grills on the center field. Back goes Gaston. Looking up and backhands the ball. Robinson tags a third.
- 1:30:21Oliva goes on to third base and it's 2-0 the National League.
- 1:30:25Trails the American League as Fossey, who is scored around, is having quite a debut in an all-star game.
- 1:30:32Scored around and is now driven in one with a fly to deep center field.
- 1:30:38Jim, it's kind of nice to see we talked about the difference in who the players selected and who the fans selected as the all-star team.
- 1:30:46I think Fossey was again one of the discrepancies. Most of the players felt that Fossey should have started this game.
- 1:30:53He's hitting almost 100 points higher than Bill Freehand and since he's come into the ballgame, he's had a fine night.
- 1:30:59Well, Alex Johnson, who also used to play for the Reds, now with the California Angels, steps in the bat for McDowell.
- 1:31:05It was all through. Perry comes in with the curve ball and misses its ball on.
- 1:31:12Johnson having a great year, hitting a 3-28.
- 1:31:17In the round with the Phillies and the Cards and Cincinnati and now with California.
- 1:31:21Came over in the trade that sent Jim McLaughlin here to Cincinnati.
- 1:31:25Perry back again with a breaking pitch. It's fouled off the end of the bat. It's 1-1 to Johnson.
- 1:31:31Davy Johnson is on at first base. Alex Johnson is the batter.
- 1:31:36Over at third base is Tony Oliva.
- 1:31:431-1 pitch, a curve ball to the second baseman, Halston.
- 1:31:46Over to second base, or rather the dropstop, Halston, over to second base, Menke for the force out.
- 1:31:51And they're out of it, but the American League has scored another run.
- 1:31:54One run on two hits, no errors and two left.
- 1:31:57They go to the bottom of the seventh with the American League leading the National League 2-0.
- 1:32:07Here Earl Weaver making all his defensive moves now.
- 1:32:10Amos Otis is actually the only real center fielder on the American League squad.
- 1:32:14And Carl Jastrzewski, who's just recently moved to first, has been playing it like he's played it all his life.
- 1:32:20Both Boston and Carl are very happy with the way that experiment has worked out.
- 1:32:24Strike one pitch from Jim Perry, who's come in. He misses its 1-1.
- 1:32:27Jastrzewski, as Sandy said, has been at first base in recent weeks.
- 1:32:33Jim Perry comes in to try to save the victory for Sam McDowell over his brother Gaylord Perry, who stands to lose and has given up both runs.
- 1:32:43Two and one now to Bud Harrelson, who saved a run with a fine diving stop from a shortstop position at second base in the top of this inning.
- 1:32:53Harrelson in his first all-star game, and the ball dived for by Jastrzewski. At first he can't come up with it.
- 1:33:03And Harrelson, in his first time at bat, in his first all-star game, singles to right field.
- 1:33:09And so Jim Perry has given up the third hit.
- 1:33:16Harrelson was hitting 266.
- 1:33:26Clarence Gaston, up for the first time, is hitting 326.
- 1:33:35Gaston for San Diego Padres, what a story he's got because he was the 30th and last player to be picked by the Padres in their draft to get a team last year, and here he is in the all-star game.
- 1:33:49Breaking pitch from Jim Perry, stays high at ball one. Harrelson, a fine base runner on his first base, but the score is 2-0.
- 1:33:57The American League, the National League, trails to the last of the seventh.
- 1:34:03Perry, right-hander like his brother, throws again a breaking pitch, fouled to the screen, it's 1-1.
- 1:34:12Looking down into the presidential box area, the president's sitting there with his coat on, and no matter what weight coat it is, I'm sure he is quite warm.
- 1:34:22The temperatures still in the 80s, 1-1, and a breaking pitch is swung on and missed by Gaston, strike two. Still in the 80s, although where we are in the Eastern time zone of the United States on daylight time, it's about 11 minutes after 10 o'clock at night.
- 1:34:42Perry ready for the 1-2 pitch, Harrelson on his first base. Harrelson gluffs as if to go, fastball is inside and rather high, it's 2-2.
- 1:34:53Well, a man of the hours, the man who was not picked, is the number one catcher, Fossey, who in his first time up, singled and scored later on his bench he singled in the sixth, and then with a sacrifice line drive to deep center, scored Brooks Robinson in the seventh.
- 1:35:072-2 to Gaston, outside, it is 3-2, with Harrelson on at first and none out in the last of the seventh.
- 1:35:17Earl Weaver striding back and forth in the American League dugout and looking to someone, and he may get that bullpen busy again.
- 1:35:26Two runs against this National League All-Star lineup, there's not much.
- 1:35:31Looks like McNally is getting up to throw again, either he or Fritz Peterson of New York, looks now like it's Peterson of New York.
- 1:35:38Check at first base where your strumski is, Harrelson is back in time.
- 1:35:453-2 to Gaston.
- 1:35:49Inside and Gaston draws the walk and Harrelson goes to second.
- 1:35:54Catfish Hunter in the unmistakable green and gold of Oakland, a right-hander, has joined Peterson, the left-hander of New York.
- 1:36:13Dennis Manky, who walked his last time up and also took a short hop throw from Gaston that hit him in the face, is the man up.
- 1:36:22And out on deck is stretch, Willie McCovey, bothered with a pulled muscle in his leg but available for pinching duties.
- 1:36:29Of course a homerun hitter in last year's All-Star game, San Francisco Giants big first baseman, had a couple of them last year.
- 1:36:36Manky squares as if to bunt, takes a strike.
- 1:36:40Harrelson down at second base, Gaston on at first.
- 1:36:452-0 to score.
- 1:36:49Last of the seventh.
- 1:36:52Jim Perry looking back at Harrelson who's on at second base.
- 1:36:57Gaston not being held of course by his strumski at first with no place to go.
- 1:37:01Second base occupied. Perry throws, swing and fouled back by Manky.
- 1:37:05It's two strikes. Nobody out.
- 1:37:11No runs, six hits. No errors for the American League. No runs, three hits. No errors for the National League but the National Lakers are threatening.
- 1:37:20Perry peers in, looks back, throws high and it hits him. Manky is hit by the pitch. What a tough night he's had.
- 1:37:27Hit in the face with a ball bouncing on a throw from Gaston and now hit by the pitch.
- 1:37:31The faces are loaded. Nobody's out and the National League comes to life with Willie McCovey coming to bat.
- 1:37:39It's an awfully tough night for Dennis Manky.
- 1:37:43There have been so many great players hurt in the All-Star game and possibly ruined their careers.
- 1:37:48Think about Ted Williams hurting his arm, running into a wall and Dizzy Dean hurting his foot and then hurting his arm consequently after that.
- 1:37:58And it would be a shame to have anything happen to any of these great players here tonight.
- 1:38:05Willie McCovey hitting at 2.59 and McWhainer again had to go out along with Hodges to see if Manky was alright.
- 1:38:12He says he is. The faces are loaded. McCovey hitting 2.59 but has 23 home runs and 66 RBI.
- 1:38:20The San Francisco Giants big first baseman facing Jim Perry.
- 1:38:26Swings and misses on the first pitch and quickly Ray Posse runs out to talk to his pitcher Perry.
- 1:38:32Gaylord Perry gave up the two runs. The American League has it out. Jim Perry with the faces loaded and none out is trying not to give them back.
- 1:38:45Sam McDowell left the ballgame with a 2-0 lead. One strike to McCovey.
- 1:38:53Perry back and foul back to the screen and another big swing by McCovey.
- 1:38:58Nelson on a 30 single went to second when Gaston walked. Manky loaded the bases when he was hit by a fish.
- 1:39:05For the last of the seventh.
- 1:39:11The National League for that long, long streak of wins in the All-Star Game tries to come back to choppy a slow roller.
- 1:39:19Charged by Aparicio. Tagged one man throws on the first double play and a run scores.
- 1:39:25I think Manky was a little confused on that play and did not pick up the ball.
- 1:39:31If he had he would have known that he had to stop and make Aparicio come and get him. Dennis ran into the tag.
- 1:39:37I think he was trying to get to second base to break up a double play thinking Aparicio was going to toss the ball to the second baseman.
- 1:39:45Dennis knew that he had to break up the double play because of McCovey's bad leg.
- 1:39:49But instead he just ran right into the tag by Aparicio and it was an easy double play.
- 1:39:53Two to one the score Gaston. The tying run is on a third base for two out now and Allen who was hitless on the night.
- 1:40:01Swings at the first pitch and misses strike one. Allen fly deep to right in the first inning.
- 1:40:06Line to the second baseman in the third and walks on a three two pitch in the sixth.
- 1:40:14Terry has given up one run now comes back inside and low to Allen and it's one and one.
- 1:40:23Terry got in trouble giving up a base hit to the first man he faced, Harrelson, walked Gaston and again in trouble when his Wilders forced him to hit Manky.
- 1:40:32Double play is a lot of run to score with Gaston on a third base. Allen swings and misses again. One and two.
- 1:40:40Not unlike all of these home run hitters are free swingers and unlike the Becker's who hit few home runs but seldom strike out.
- 1:40:51Terry ready on the one two pitch and throws and it's fouled upstairs.
- 1:40:57There are no screens or any kind of protection in front of the press box behind home plate.
- 1:41:04The writers here had better stay pretty alert. That ball bounced in and out again.
- 1:41:12Terry ready to throw one and two it's low and in the dirt picked up by Fossey.
- 1:41:18Oh Fossey is going to lose a few pounds tonight.
- 1:41:22Catching as he is behind the plate. Completely wet but I'm sure at the moment completely happy. He has done quite a job.
- 1:41:31Two to now. Allen trying to get the tying run in. Jim Terry ready to throw and throws low and away.
- 1:41:36And we have a full count again with Charlie Hustle, Pete Rose, kneeling on deck.
- 1:41:51Terry stares in, hands the sign, starts his motion.
- 1:41:55He throws again and he's cold out on strikes. A fine pitch on the outside corner that Allen fooled but he was not angry with our ball.
- 1:42:04He simply walks away and drops the bat. One run on one hit, no errors and one man left.
- 1:42:09At the end of seven complete. The American League has a now two to one lead over the National.
- 1:42:14This is Sandy Koufax with Jim Simpson and Len Dillon in Cincinnati's new Riverfront Stadium at the 41st All-Star Game.
- 1:42:22With seven innings the American League holds a slim two to one lead over the National League.
- 1:42:27For the American League it's two runs, six hits, no errors.
- 1:42:30For the National League one run, three hits and no errors.
- 1:42:33Fifty one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight people in the stands plus one the President of the United States.
- 1:42:39Jim we have a few changes in the lineup.
- 1:42:41Willie McCovey stays on to play first base and Joe Morgan comes on to play second base.
- 1:42:47McCovey the Giants, Morgan of the Houston Astros and what a good thing this is for Joe. A few years ago he was voted to the All-Star Game.
- 1:42:55And then he fractured his kneecap and could not play.
- 1:42:59Well because Mian of Atlanta could not play in this game, Morgan gets to play.
- 1:43:05He was voted in 1966 and could not play. Bob Gibson has come on the pitch.
- 1:43:10But now we have Deets of San Francisco behind the plate, Gibson the pitcher, McCovey of San Francisco at first.
- 1:43:16Morgan of Houston at second. Harrelson of the Mets at short.
- 1:43:21Grabarowicz of the Dodgers at third. Hickman of the Cubs in left.
- 1:43:25Gaston of San Diego in center and Pete Rose of Cincinnati in right.
- 1:43:29And the batter, Aparicio, he's been in there all the way up for the fourth time about a hit, swings and fouls the ball down the third baseline.
- 1:43:36Bob Gibson twelve and four. Just had a ten game winning streak snapped in his last start.
- 1:43:40Eleven complete games of nineteen starts this year.
- 1:43:43He's pitched a hundred and fifty-three innings and has struck out a hundred and fifty-six men.
- 1:43:48He's in his fifth All-Star Game and he's the fourth pitcher.
- 1:43:52At the moment Gaylord Perry stands to be the loser in this two to one ball game.
- 1:43:57We are in the eighth inning. Aparicio, the leadoff batter for the American League batting order, leads it off in the eighth and swings it a pitch.
- 1:44:05It's oh and two for Luis.
- 1:44:08Gibson got off to a very slow start this year and a lot of people started to write him off and say that the fastball was gone.
- 1:44:15But all of a sudden it turned around. He started to throw hard and he looks like the same pitcher he's been for a lot of years. A great one.
- 1:44:21One and two in the last two pitches, Sandy, that he's given Aparicio have been breaking pitches.
- 1:44:28One, two, back again. Morgan gets his chance after coming in at second base and throws on to McCovey who gets his first chance in the field and is one down.
- 1:44:36And I would imagine that Manke is seeking combat pay after the night.
- 1:44:41I think Dennis looked for a while like the fighter who's maybe taken a few, few many punches.
- 1:44:46I think Gil Hodges, the manager, kept going out asking him if he could stay on his feet and he'd get a draw.
- 1:44:52Out here is one great, Carl Jostemsky, who back in 1967 faced another great, Bob Gibson in that fine seven game World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals.
- 1:45:01Jostemsky's had a great night tonight. Swings again on the first pitch and has his third hit.
- 1:45:05Round's first base, throws it right field, fires on to second.
- 1:45:10Well, Jostemsky in the first inning, single on a 1-1 pitch.
- 1:45:15He drove Woody Mays deep to the wall on the first pitch he saw on the fourth. He caught it.
- 1:45:20He's single on the first pitch he saw on the sixth and he's singles on the first pitch he sees in the eighth.
- 1:45:26And Willie Horton is up for the first time.
- 1:45:31I have to think that Carl Jostemsky might be a first-ball hitter. I know that Willie Horton is and I'm sure that Bob Gibson probably knows that.
- 1:45:39They've gone over each opposing player in the clubhouse before the game and probably a little careful with the first pitch here.
- 1:45:46Willie Horton hitting 304 takes the first pitch low.
- 1:45:51Sixteen home runs, 43 RBIs.
- 1:45:57Comes home with Jostemsky on the first one down on the top of the eighth.
- 1:46:01National League trails the American League 2-1. Gibson ready and throwing and Horton drills one to center field.
- 1:46:06It's going to drop in there in front of Gaston. Jostemsky stops at second and the American League is back in business.
- 1:46:15Second hit off Bob Gibson.
- 1:46:20Jim watching Gibby throw, he looked like he was throwing good but not as hard as he can and I think you're going to see what makes a fellow like Gibson a great pitcher.
- 1:46:29He's in trouble now and all of a sudden the fastball could just get a little bit quicker.
- 1:46:35Well up for the first time is Amos Otis of Kansas City. Right-handed batter hits the first pitch to short right field.
- 1:46:41Rose is there, Jostemsky is making his hit the tag, he's going to third base, Rose's throw comes there and Jostemsky is in ahead of the throw, going to third base.
- 1:46:50Staying on at first of course is Horton, they're two down with runners at first and third.
- 1:47:01Otis who was up last time saying an eyesore hit into a triple play a couple of weeks ago on a ground ball.
- 1:47:09Now the batter is Brooks Robinson, single his first time up back in the seventh and later scored on Fosse's.
- 1:47:16Sacrifice fly to center. Gibson throws hard this time, Robinson drives Gaston back, Gaston on his horse, it'll be over his head, timing against the wall.
- 1:47:25Jostemsky scores, Horton is on his way around third base, he'll score. On the way to third is Brooks Robinson and he's in with a triple.
- 1:47:32Robinson two for two and it's four to one, the American League.
- 1:47:37I think all the players that are hitting against Gibson have swung at the first pitch and hit the ball fairly well.
- 1:47:44I just wonder if possibly they haven't found out something or maybe just Bob is just throwing a fast ball.
- 1:47:50It's hard to tell from up here but he's gotten hurt almost every time on the first pitch.
- 1:47:56Now he's given up three runs on three hits including the first extra base hit of the night. Three hits and two runs and the score is four to one.
- 1:48:11Bob Gibson had that long winning streak of ten, just snapped in his last start and the American League has jumped on him in a hurry tonight.
- 1:48:21Oliva swings on the first pitch and drills it high but to short right field, P. Rose simply walks it, not pops it and takes it for the third out.
- 1:48:28But Gibson is touched up, two runs score on three hits, no errors and Robinson left that third base in the middle of the eighth inning.
- 1:48:36The American League four, the National League one.
- 1:48:40The score at the end of seven and a half, American League four, National League one.
- 1:48:46Rose the foot shooter batting left against Perry, swings on the first pitch and fouls it off. Robinson is going over near the dugout but it's going to be in the first row of seats as Robinson falls over the rolled up tarpaulin over there but is all right.
- 1:48:59Kavarkowitz of the Dodgers on deck hoping to get up and will get up for the first time in this ballgame.
- 1:49:05Time running out on the National League, Earl Weaver, manager of Baltimore in the American League all-stars, and he's going to break that seven game streak and at the moment he's got a three run lead with time running out in the last of the eighth.
- 1:49:15Perry's ready, throws outside and low to Rose and it's one and one.
- 1:49:20He was up once before and walked back in the sixth inning.
- 1:49:27Jim Perry of Minnesota throws outside and high this time, it's two and one to Rose.
- 1:49:33Four runs on nine hits, no errors for the American League, one run, three hits, no errors on the National League.
- 1:49:40And the run that scored, scored on a double play.
- 1:49:44Nobody gets the RBI. Two and one pitch.
- 1:49:47Breaking pitch at the knees of Rose, it's two-two and he simply walks away from Barney.
- 1:49:52Jim, I think again we see in this all-star game the dominance that pitching has, especially when they know they only have to go three innings with all these great hitters.
- 1:50:00We haven't had very many balls hit well, even some of the base hits have been not hit well.
- 1:50:06Rose strikes out swinging.
- 1:50:12Perry gets his second strikeout. Well, Cincinnati fans thus far have been disappointed.
- 1:50:16John Bench struck out three straight times.
- 1:50:20Tony Perez struck out twice and popped up.
- 1:50:23And Pete Rose has walked and struck out.
- 1:50:31Marat, though, pitched fine. First pitch now to Zabarkowitz, so the Dodgers up for the first time.
- 1:50:36He's going one outside.
- 1:50:37Yeah, I think we're also at the point in the ballgame where you have to look at the pinch hitting possibilities.
- 1:50:42The National League has no more left-handed pinch hitters left to come into the ballgame.
- 1:50:46Only Clemente and Joe Torre have not yet appeared.
- 1:50:56Zabarkowitz is hitting three-forty.
- 1:51:01Whoa, and away. Two and one now.
- 1:51:07Filly in his first all-star game.
- 1:51:11Fourth in the league in hitting.
- 1:51:18Terry Reddy again hits this one high.
- 1:51:20The short left field, Horton was playing deep, still on the dead run.
- 1:51:23Now says he's got it and takes it, turning forward, second base.
- 1:51:27Very close to the shortstop, Aparicio.
- 1:51:34So they're two down, and Hickman of the Cubs, as we said before, there's not much time left for the National League.
- 1:51:41And you can say that again as we've got one out to go in the eighth inning.
- 1:51:48Hunter goes back to warm up again for the American League, having a great year with Oakland.
- 1:51:55First pitch is high, and away to Jim Hickman of Chicago.
- 1:51:59On deck with his shin guards on is Dick Deets.
- 1:52:03Four runs, nine hits, no errors for the American League.
- 1:52:05One run, three hits, no errors for the National.
- 1:52:07In the last of the eighth, Terry is back and throws inside with a fastball and low, 2-0.
- 1:52:15Ray Fossey, Carl Yosemsky, and Brooks Robinson have been the big guns for the American League.
- 1:52:23And their pitcher is Palmer Mcdowell, who stands to win, and Perry had done quite well, giving up just three hits.
- 1:52:28Breaking pitch that's in there for a strike. It's two and one.
- 1:52:33To Hickman. Hickman came on, replacing Cardy, who started in left field.
- 1:52:41Two on pitch from Jim Perry, and it's swinging strike. It's two and two.
- 1:52:53Not very quiet because this has been the American League's ball game so far.
- 1:52:57Drive is foul, up and off to the right, out of play.
- 1:53:03Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:53:11Hickman, the right-hander, facing Perry, the right-handed pitcher.
- 1:53:14Jim is back and strikes in out swinging.
- 1:53:17Nothing across at the end of eighth. The American League four, the National League one.
- 1:53:21Back in Cincinnati, Bob Gibson throws to the first batter, Davy Johnson, who is one for three.
- 1:53:27Swinging strike one, along with Sandy Koufax and Len Dillon.
- 1:53:29This is Jim Simpson. Gibson is ready again, throws again, another swinging strike.
- 1:53:33It's oh and two to Johnson.
- 1:53:36Johnson last time was robbed of an RBI when Harrelson at shortstop made a fine dive to stop his base hit from getting on through to the outfield.
- 1:53:44Gibson throws again a breaking pitch, but it's up high, and it's one and two.
- 1:53:49Davy, fly to right, has also fouled out.
- 1:53:53Four to one, the American League. We are in the top of the ninth inning.
- 1:53:57Drive foul upstairs, off to the right.
- 1:54:00Well, it'll drop in that big field section. They have four levels here.
- 1:54:04The lows, the club level, the plaza level, and the field section.
- 1:54:12Johnson strikes out, reaching for an outside pitch.
- 1:54:20That's the first strikeout for Bob Gibson.
- 1:54:22Tom Siever, who started for the National League, gave up one hit, struck out four in his three innings.
- 1:54:27Well, here's Fossey, who has singled and scored a run, and his line sacrifice fly to deep centerfield, scored another.
- 1:54:35The Cleveland young catcher takes high from Bob Gibson, it's ball one.
- 1:54:40Fossey's only 23 years old, born and lives in Marion, Illinois.
- 1:54:49Jim Furgose, who has not been in the ballgame yet, hitting 298.
- 1:54:53Shortstop for California, out and swinging a bat on deck.
- 1:54:57Two and 0 to count to Fossey. Bound out of play to the right.
- 1:55:03Article not too long ago about how come Ray Fossey, who last year spent all the year, didn't catch too much for the Indians, and hit 172, is doing so well.
- 1:55:12Answer, I got married.
- 1:55:15Two and 1, low it in the dirt, three and 1. And Bob Gibson definitely has not been the Bob Gibson we are used to seeing.
- 1:55:22And certainly not the Bob Gibson that rolled off that 10-game winning streak.
- 1:55:26They jumped on his first pitches in the eighth inning, picked up two runs on three hits, including a triple.
- 1:55:31And now Fossey also runs the first base drawing the walk.
- 1:55:34Gibson has walked his first man.
- 1:55:36Jim, Bob looks like he's having a little bit of trouble with his rhythm.
- 1:55:40He's throwing fairly well, it's not the overpowering stuff that he usually has.
- 1:55:44He's not making his pitches. He's missing with the fastball, he's missing with the breaking ball.
- 1:55:49And he just doesn't look really too comfortable out of the mound tonight.
- 1:55:54Jim Fregosi hitting 298 as an eight-game hitting streak going from in the regular season, over which time he's been hitting 484.
- 1:56:01He swings and misses at the first pitch.
- 1:56:03Right-handed batter, drafted out of the Boston organization by the Angels when they were getting started, and has been with them ever since.
- 1:56:10One strike to him with Fossey at first base, Gibson throws, breaking pitch, it's fouled off to the on-deck batter, who throws it back to Gibson.
- 1:56:19Well, Fossey, who came on to relieve the free hand as we said, has singled in his quarter on, sacrificed fly,
- 1:56:25and now on his third time at bat in his first all-star game has drawn a walk.
- 1:56:29Pitch is outside, and it's one and two.
- 1:56:32Jim Fregosi.
- 1:56:37Four to one, the American League, top of the ninth inning at the 41st all-star game.
- 1:56:42Fouled back upstairs, the American League trying to break that dominance of the National League over the last seven years,
- 1:56:48and the National League has also won 11 of the last 13.
- 1:56:52And lead in overall games, 22 to 17, with one at time.
- 1:56:57One-two pitch from Bob Gibson, big curve, very high, and it's 2-2.
- 1:57:03Gibson, a native of Omaha, Nebraska.
- 1:57:08Fossey not taking too big a lead.
- 1:57:09Willie McCovey, the Giants, is holding him on at first base.
- 1:57:12Gibson ready, and Fregosi pokes one out into left field.
- 1:57:15Back goes Hickman.
- 1:57:17Back near the 375, Mark almost fell down, and now it gets it as he goes into the wall.
- 1:57:21Taking a look at Gaston, and Fossey has to run back to first.
- 1:57:26I think that's one of the other problems in all-star games, not being used to the fellow that's playing next year.
- 1:57:33The left fielder doesn't know the center fielder, the center fielder doesn't know the left fielder.
- 1:57:37Jim Hickman went back on that ball, looked for Gaston in center field, and almost fell down trying to get his footing again.
- 1:57:44And that's one of your problems.
- 1:57:48Well, here's Aparicio, who is playing all the way for the American League, as has Karl Gershwimsky and Davey Johnson.
- 1:57:59One strike as he fouls the first one off.
- 1:58:02Two outs, Aparicio thinks high. It's 1-1.
- 1:58:06Luis struck out in the first, grounded out in the third, flied out in the sixth, and grounded out again in the eighth.
- 1:58:10He's 0-4.
- 1:58:13Gibson back, and he swings and misses. It's 1-2.
- 1:58:17Two out, Posse still on it, first base.
- 1:58:27Gibson ready to throw, and Aparicio tried to bunt his way on, but instead bunts it foul for a strike three, so it's no runs, no hits, no errors, one left.
- 1:58:39The National League has one more chance.
- 1:58:41We go to the last of the ninth, the American League, leading by the score of 4-1.
- 1:58:46The line score at the end of eighth and a half. The American League, four runs on nine hits and no errors.
- 1:58:51The National League, one run, three hits, no errors. Jim?
- 1:58:56Well, in the last couple of years, Jim Catfish, hunter of Oakland, has won 13 games, and in the third year, he won 12.
- 1:59:03Already in 1970, he has won 13 ball games, and he's coming to save this one for Sam McDowell and the American League,
- 1:59:12and he's going to break that seven-game winning streak of the National League. He'll face first Dick Dietz.
- 1:59:19Aparicio remains in, David Johnson remains in, Yostemsky remains in, whereas Gil Hodges has taken out every one of his starters.
- 1:59:26Chris Peterson of the Yankees is warming up just in case the right-hander, Hunter, gets in trouble.
- 1:59:33Dietz in his first all-star game, up for the first time.
- 1:59:36From the San Francisco Giants, the catcher takes a strike from Hunter. Well, here's somebody across the bay.
- 1:59:42From San Francisco, Hunter pitching to a man from across the bay, Dietz from San Francisco.
- 1:59:47Now Stoudelmeyer, we've got two Yankees in the bullpen. Outside and low, it's one-and-one.
- 1:59:53That's Dick Dietz. No Yankee has yet appeared, and we told you Roy White was also hit by a ball before the game in his arm and has not come back to play.
- 2:00:03It's two-and-one now as Hunter's next pitch is high.
- 2:00:09Harrelson is kneeling on deck.
- 2:00:12Hunter throws, ball is hit to center field. Back goes Amosota, back looking up at the world, and Dick Dietz does the home run.
- 2:00:20Jim, I think that's the first home run here tonight. It's interesting to me. I wanted to see just how the ball carried in this ballpark, and it seems like it does carry pretty well.
- 2:00:44Dietz is not a great slugger, not known for hitting the long ball. He hit that ball all the way out in center field.
- 2:00:51And Harrelson follows up, swinging on the first pitch and lines a single to left field.
- 2:00:55It's four to two, the American League and the National League ninth inning, and here comes the National League, and here comes Earl Weaver quickly to the mound.
- 2:01:03Jim, it's amazing just how quickly a ball game changes its complexion. It looked like there was no problem, three-run lead.
- 2:01:10All of a sudden you look up and on two pitches the tying run is at the plate in the ball game, and it may be just a little bit of trouble here for the American League.
- 2:01:20Gaston is on deck. He drew off. Weaver is talking along with Posse, his catcher.
- 2:01:27Four runs, nine hits, no errors for the American League. The National League is not going quietly, however. Two runs, five hits, and no errors.
- 2:01:33Two of those hits, and one of those runs, and this the last of the ninth inning.
- 2:01:38I think getting the tying run to the plate has brought a little bit of action in the National League both end. Claude Otheen, the pitcher from the Los Angeles Dodgers, has gotten up the throw.
- 2:01:47Gaston of San Diego takes a strike at the knees. That ball cleared just where it says, four-oh-four, in straightaway center field.
- 2:01:55He has 18 home runs on the air, and in his first all-star bat he gets a home run. Gaston goes around firing to check his swing. It's strike two.
- 2:02:12Joe Morgan of the Astros on deck, breaking pitch, and it's popped up to the infield.
- 2:02:16He's waving everybody off in front of Davy Johnson and takes it for the first out. Harrelson, of course, holds on.
- 2:02:30Let me talk about fellows who have had good nights here. So far it's been an alluding cause, but Bud Harrelson of the Mets is holding it up the line.
- 2:02:38He's gotten to it, and he's got a fine job in the field. So there's been a lot of players here tonight who have looked good and proved they're all-stars.
- 2:02:47Joe Morgan takes a strike from Hunter.
- 2:02:55Morgan has two home runs this year, but has surprising power on occasion, for a little man can get the ball around very well, get the bat around, and get the ball long distance.
- 2:03:05Sand and I saw him in a home run in the dome that there was no question about, and it's difficult to hit it there.
- 2:03:10One of them won the count to Harrelson on the first four to two to score with the last of the ninth inning.
- 2:03:14Did not go all the way around. Now, now Ehrlich said he did go around. Fossey looked back and challenged him, as Morgan looked like he went around.
- 2:03:22Nothing was said. Fossey looked back and said, what? And Ehrlich said it is a strike.
- 2:03:26Knowing how Fossey and how good an umpire he is, I'm sure that the late call on that came because he was checking with the third base umpire.
- 2:03:34The third base umpire will give the home plate umpire a sign on check swings to let him know if the batter went around.
- 2:03:40Two-two to Morgan with one out. Four to two to score. Last of the ninth inning. The American League leads.
- 2:03:47Hunter throws again a check swing by Morgan, and it's three and two. Morgan trying to get on base and kneeling on deck is Willie McCovey.
- 2:03:57The one thing Morgan does not want, of course, is a double play to end the ballgame.
- 2:04:02Give McCovey the shot at it. Breaking pitch, lines it to right field. Over quickly as they leave it. Picks it up, stopping it second as Harrelson.
- 2:04:09Men on first and second and Willie McCovey the batter.
- 2:04:16And Earl Weaver quickly out of the dugout and probably will go to Peterson, the left-hander. The pitch to the left-handed, McCovey.
- 2:04:24Jim, on the National League bench, you only have two players right now except for the pitchers who have not been in the ballgame and they are both right-hand hitters.
- 2:04:32Both good right-hand hitters. Joe Snorey of the Cardinals and Roberto Fometti of the Pirates.
- 2:04:38Fometti has had a problem with his neck. Whether it is so bad that he can't hit or can't play, we don't know.
- 2:04:46But there is the possibility of Gil Hodges wanting to make the trade. He's got two fellows sitting there who can hit the ball out of any ballpark anywhere.
- 2:04:53Well, Hunter is gone. One-third of an inning responsible thus far for one run. Three hits. Retired just one man.
- 2:05:04And of course this game could be tied with both runs charged to Hunter who cannot lose it.
- 2:05:11Also seemed like something had to happen. It's just too good a lineup, both clubs, the National League and the American League club.
- 2:05:20And it was a great tribute to the American League pitching that they held it so long.
- 2:05:24But to hold that National League lineup to only three hits through nine innings, that's a great chore for pitching staff to come up with.
- 2:05:31And it would be exactly the same kind of chore for the National League staff to hold the American League club to only three hits.
- 2:05:38So it took a while, but I think the talent on both these lineups is starting to show up.
- 2:05:43The National League is showing up very late, possibly too late for them. We can only wait and see right now.
- 2:05:50As McCovey comes out, Roberto Clemente comes to the on-deck circle. So the National League has two great shots at it.
- 2:05:57McCovey, remember, however, is working with that full hamstring muscle.
- 2:06:01And with the possibility of a double play, he will not be able to give it his all going on the first base line.
- 2:06:07Peterson has 110 lost five. His earn-one average, 3.77 for the Yankees.
- 2:06:16And now is ready to pitch to Willie McCovey.
- 2:06:22It's doubtful that you'd bunt with a hitter like McCovey, but the percentages, the rules of baseball so-called say that you play for a tie at home and play to win on the road.
- 2:06:32This is the home mark for the National League, so there is still the possibility with Clemente on deck that McCovey might be bunting, but I wouldn't look for it.
- 2:06:42McCovey takes a giant swing, strike one.
- 2:06:46Alton down at second base, Joe Morgan on at first base, and quickly Ray Fossey of the Indians out to talk with Britt Peterson.
- 2:06:56One out last of the night, four runs, nine hits, no errors for the American League, the National League with its perhaps last chance to run six hits, no errors.
- 2:07:03Slide right, left-hander, the Angels now up and throwing.
- 2:07:06Joining Stadlmeyer, the Yankees, and the American League bullpen.
- 2:07:09Olsteen still down in the National League bullpen.
- 2:07:12One strike to McCovey, Peterson ready.
- 2:07:14Throws from the stretch, fouled off to the left, and out of play by McCovey.
- 2:07:18And quickly, Peterson has him down 0-2.
- 2:07:22Clemente, who had a sore neck and did not come in until after the workout yesterday, kneeling on deck, some question whether or not he would play.
- 2:07:29He thought he wouldn't, but he's here.
- 2:07:32Could be in a position to be the hero of the game that at one moment it looked like he wasn't going to play it.
- 2:07:39Peterson backs, round ball, big hit, F. Johnson.
- 2:07:43Elton comes around to score, it's 4-3. A mc-hying run, Morgan a third base, and Clemente the batter.
- 2:08:04To McCovey at first base, hit that ball pretty well. He's not the kind of hitter who's going to be intimidated because it's a left hand pitcher.
- 2:08:14I'm sure that he'd be the first to admit that it's a lot easier for him to hit against right handers, but he got up there and hit the ball hard, hit it back through the middle.
- 2:08:23And right now the tying run is only 90 feet away, and the winning run's at first base, and I would think we may have a pinch runner here for McCovey.
- 2:08:32Gil Hodge is out to talk to him along with Lamaris, first base coach, to find out if Willie can run it all.
- 2:08:39I would think that we're going to have to have a pinch runner. It might even be the pitcher, Claude Osteen.
- 2:08:43Osteen is coming in, McCovey marches off, and the Voto Clemente with a 3.55 batting average comes to bat.
- 2:08:58The first run out, the winning run is Claude Osteen over at first base.
- 2:09:04The tying run is Joe Morgan over at third base.
- 2:09:08One is out, and Earl Weaver is out of the dugout and marching forth the mound with a side trip to look at Posse calling him.
- 2:09:17The American League Baltimore manager really wants to win this one.
- 2:09:22If Clemente a right-hander up, he might be going to the percentages and to Stottlemeyer out on the ball tip.
- 2:09:28I would think definitely that he'll go with Stottlemeyer.
- 2:09:31The one thing Earl needs right here, and needs badly, is the double play.
- 2:09:36Stottlemeyer is a sinker ball pitcher. He keeps the ball low. He has a lot of ground balls hit off of him.
- 2:09:42But I can tell you that Clemente runs extremely well. He gets out of the box well. He gets down the line well.
- 2:09:47He doesn't hit into a lot of double plays, but he does hit the ball hard. Everybody says he just can't outrun the ball.
- 2:09:53So if he hits it hard on the ground at one of the infielders, there's a good chance of the double play, but he's a tough man to double.
- 2:10:05Now Stottlemeyer comes in. He is the sixth American League pitcher, and he is the third in this, the ninth inning.
- 2:10:12We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:10:17Stottlemeyer in the ball game now, as we said a little bit earlier, is a good low ball pitcher. He keeps most of his pitches down.
- 2:10:24He has a sinking fast ball and a good slider and curve ball, which he'll try and keep down.
- 2:10:29I think in this inning here, you'll probably see the American League play in a little bit at the corners and deep at short and second.
- 2:10:38They'll go for the double play if the ball is hit to the second baseman at the shortstop.
- 2:10:42I would think they'll go to the plate if it's hit to the first baseman or the third baseman.
- 2:10:46It's the ninth inning. You're on the road. You don't want to allow the other team to tie the ball game,
- 2:10:51because once you go into extra innings, well, the home team has got a great advantage.
- 2:10:57Morgan, of course, has fine speed at third base.
- 2:10:59Lomete, he'd only hit a ball to the outfield, perhaps, to score the tying run and send this, the 41st Major League All-Star game, into extra innings.
- 2:11:09Lomete hitting it, 3.55.
- 2:11:12Stottlemeyer with an 8 at 8 record in the throw and throws the ball and bouncing around in front of Fossey, gets behind him, but he finally digs it out.
- 2:11:19Ball won.
- 2:11:20I think that was a big break right there for the American League. I think that ball's got five, Fossey.
- 2:11:25I think it hit out Barlich, and that's the only thing that kept it from going all the way to the backstop.
- 2:11:29So that was a big break for the American League.
- 2:11:31We could have had a tie ball game with a winning run in scoring position just as quickly as anything.
- 2:11:36Stottlemeyer, of course, has been a 20-game winner over the last two years, three of the last four years, 8-8 as we said this year,
- 2:11:43and the second Yankee pitcher in this inning, 1-0 the count to Clemente.
- 2:11:471-out, last of the line, 4-3.
- 2:11:50Going away, it's 2-0.
- 2:11:53I think in this situation, he also run into another problem.
- 2:11:58With the double play in order, both your second baseman and your shortstop have to cheat just a little bit so that they can make the play,
- 2:12:04and they're both bunched around second base.
- 2:12:06So if Clemente pulls the ball or hits it to right field, it's got a chance to go through.
- 2:12:10Took a big swing, fouls it back. It's 2-1, kneeling on deck, winner of the National League Batting Championship
- 2:12:17the last two years in a row, P. Rose.
- 2:12:204-3, we are in the ninth inning of this bowl game, which cruised along strictly in the pitcher's hip pocket for a long while.
- 2:12:27It's now broken open, and it's 4-3, with most of the scoring done since the seventh inning.
- 2:12:35Back again with a high pitch.
- 2:12:38Breaking pitcher did not come down. It's 3-0 on the Clemente, and he looks down quickly to Leo DeRocca, who just gives him a fist and claps his hands.
- 2:12:47Clemente can hit anything, near the plate, over the plate, or not so near the plate.
- 2:12:51It's not a bad ball hitter, but a great hitter.
- 2:12:55The 3-1 pitch, he swings at it, and it looked like it was in on him, but he fouled it back, and now asks for something to get his hands.
- 2:13:04It is very moist and humid, to get his hands dry and perhaps stickier.
- 2:13:08The humidity is very high, the temperature is very high, and it has been all day and much of the evening.
- 2:13:14So now, 3-2 and 1-out, the tying run at third base, the winning run on it first.
- 2:13:20And a four-time National League batting champion, Roberto Clemente, at the bat, facing a three-time 20-game winner, Mel Stoudelmeyer.
- 2:13:30Stoudelmeyer is ready, a drive out into center field, over comes the center fielder, Otis, makes a fine catch, but here comes Morgan, who's at a tie-break.
- 2:14:00We're listening to that crowd, there's no doubt that this is not a nonpartisan crowd.
- 2:14:12Cincinnati, a great baseball town, the oldest franchise in baseball, really rooting for the National Leaguers here tonight.
- 2:14:20Pete Rose, their hero, the batter, and takes a strike at the knee.
- 2:14:25High game, 2-out now, go-ahead run, Carl Olsteen running for McCovey on it first base.
- 2:14:31That ball by Clemente was well hit on the 3-2 pitch.
- 2:14:35Another pitch is outside this time, to Rose, it's 1-1.
- 2:14:39Pete has walked and struck out.
- 2:14:41The Cincinnati batters tonight have been disappointing for the home crowd.
- 2:14:45Johnny Bench, as we said, struck out three times.
- 2:14:47Tony Perez struck out twice and popped up to the infield.
- 2:14:51Rose has walked and struck out.
- 2:14:53They'd like some action from their fine hitters.
- 2:14:56Swing and a miss, it's 1-2.
- 2:14:59And the scoreboard in centerfield says, how do you like the show so far?
- 2:15:064-4, they've tied it up with a man out in the last of the ninth inning,
- 2:15:10Roberto Clemente driving in Morgan from third base.
- 2:15:16Another swing and Rose strikes out again,
- 2:15:19with the National League with three runs from the ninth inning, Tieser.
- 2:15:23On four hits, no errors and one left.
- 2:15:25At the end of nine, American League Four, National League Four.
- 2:15:31Hello again from Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, Jim Simpson with San Diego Facts and Lynn Dillon.
- 2:15:35Claude Olsteen who came on to run for McCovey while warming up stays in to do the pitching.
- 2:15:40Jim Hickman has come in from left field to play first base.
- 2:15:43Pete Rose has gone from right to left.
- 2:15:45And Roberto Clemente who tied the ball game up has gone in the right field.
- 2:15:51Jim, right now you'd have to say that the National League does have a little bit of an edge.
- 2:15:55As soon as you go into extra innings and you're tied, it's just a great advantage to the home team.
- 2:16:01It becomes sudden death for them.
- 2:16:02If the American League can score here, well, the National League still has another chance.
- 2:16:06But anytime the National League can score, if they can hold the American League down, it's a sudden death victory.
- 2:16:11And it's a nice feeling when you're at home and you're in extra innings.
- 2:16:15Well, Earl Weaver made all of the moves, Sandy, trying to hold a victory out for the American League the first time after seven straight years.
- 2:16:23But he doesn't have it yet. It's four to four.
- 2:16:25Here's Dostremski who the last three times up has hit the first pitch.
- 2:16:29One deep to center field, the other two for singles.
- 2:16:32Claude Olsteen to do the pitching and this time he can't hit the first pitch.
- 2:16:35It's in the dirt and through the legs of the catcher, Dick Dietz.
- 2:16:39Dostremski will be followed by Willie Horton.
- 2:16:41We are in the top of the tenth inning, four to four the score.
- 2:16:45No score until the American League got one in the sixth.
- 2:16:48The National League got three in the last of the ninth.
- 2:16:50Dostremski grounds one, Hickman backs on it.
- 2:16:52Olsteen comes over quickly to cover first, almost missed the bag and had to swoop in on it, but does for the first out.
- 2:17:00Looks like Claude might have got just a little disorientated with that baseline.
- 2:17:04I would think that it might be a little difficult to get yourself lined up.
- 2:17:08Most of the time the pitcher likes to cut over to the baseline and then try and run parallel to it.
- 2:17:13Here with all that green it looks like he had a little trouble finding it.
- 2:17:17At bat now, Willie Horton who is single the last time up and scored one of the two runs in the eighth inning off Bob Gibson.
- 2:17:25Now this game now belongs to Claude Olsteen and Mel Stoudelmeyer.
- 2:17:29On outside pitch to Horton, it's ball on.
- 2:17:32Horton of course has great talent.
- 2:17:34Willie made the news by the other day, well I guess it's been a week or more now, that he gave a big cookout for the ground crew at Staples Stadium.
- 2:17:42Here's a drive to deep right field, Clemente going back looking up.
- 2:17:45Off the wall plays it there, Horton goes forward, second base and that is one of the longest singles you'll see.
- 2:17:50Clemente with that rifle on fires it in, playing it off the fence.
- 2:17:54And Horton has a long single about 385 feet away.
- 2:17:58In addition to his great arm, Roberto Clemente could possibly be a billiard master if he put his mind to it.
- 2:18:05I've never seen him play a ball off the wall and be in bad position.
- 2:18:09He catches balls off irregular walls, he's always in the right place, and he has made some of the longest singles look pretty futile when baserunners try and go for two.
- 2:18:20Amazones who swung at the first pitch he saw in his first appearance in the eighth and flied to right is the batter.
- 2:18:27Horton at first base, Otis takes inside from Claudio Steen.
- 2:18:31That was a ball, remember he hits the right field and Horton is a right-handed batter, showing you he has power in all directions.
- 2:18:391-0 now to Amos Otis of Kansas City playing center field.
- 2:18:43Made a fine running catch in the middle of the sole goal.
- 2:18:46Back again, ground ball could be double play, short shot to second base, Morgan on to Hickman, double play.
- 2:18:52Nationally comes the bat in the last of the tenth inning with a high ball game, 4-4.
- 2:18:57Howe Stoudelmeier will face Bill Zabarkiewicz of the Dodgers in the last of the tenth inning.
- 2:19:01He flied a short left, last time up his only other time up, and a good flaking pitch from Stoudelmeier, strike one.
- 2:19:09On deck is Hickman.
- 2:19:12Nationally, got three in the last of the ninth at side.
- 2:19:14Stoudelmeier has him swinging this time, fouling it at the plate, and two strikes to Zabarkiewicz.
- 2:19:19Filling in his first all-star game, fourth in the league in hitting.
- 2:19:31Zabarkiewicz is hitting 340.
- 2:19:34Hits this one high, the short left field, Horton was playing deep, still on the dead run, now says he's got it, and takes it, turning towards second base.
- 2:19:41And very close to the shortstop, Aparicio.
- 2:19:48Here is Hickman who's popped out and struck out.
- 2:19:50The angels hitter, the Chicago Cubs outfielder, Ian Thieler, plays both the outfield as well as first base,
- 2:19:55and the night has been forced to playing first base here, as Dick Allen and Willie McCovey, two first basemen, are out of the lineup.
- 2:20:02They've been in the ball game and now out.
- 2:20:04One and 0 pitch is right down the middle, one and one.
- 2:20:06Jim Hickman of Chicago, four runs, ten hits, no errors for the American League, four runs, seven hits, no errors for the National League, last of the tenth in Cincinnati.
- 2:20:16The National League has got three in the last of the ninth to save off a defeat.
- 2:20:20Swinging strike to Hickman, hits one and two.
- 2:20:24Stoudelmeyer came on, gave up a single to McCovey, and a hard liner that was caught by Clemente, and Hickman strikes out.
- 2:20:52Stoudelmeyer has now struck out two.
- 2:20:58And here is Deets.
- 2:21:01First time up in an all-star game in the ninth inning, he shot it at all by hitting a ball 404 feet away for a home run in his first at bat as an all-star.
- 2:21:13Makes a fast ball outside, it's one and 0.
- 2:21:16Jim, we've got a little note here that there have been five previous X training games and they've all been won by the National League.
- 2:21:23Last one was a 15 inning affair, there's a line drive right to Davey Johnson at second, it's all over.
- 2:21:27That last one in 1967 won by Tony Perez.
- 2:21:30The runs hit their errors at the end of ten, we've still got a tie ball game four to four.
- 2:21:37Come Riverfront Stadium on a hot and humid but exciting night.
- 2:21:40This is the 41st Major League All-Star Game and this is Jim Simpson with Sandy Kofax and Lynn Dillon.
- 2:21:45Four runs, ten hits, no errors for the American League. Four runs, seven hits, no errors for the National League.
- 2:21:49We go now to the 11th inning.
- 2:21:52And Bush Robinson, who has singled and scored a run and tripled in two in the eighth inning as the batter as Clyde Wright begins to warm again for the American League.
- 2:22:031967, two to one on Perez's home run.
- 2:22:05Fifteen innings, National League, 1966. Ten innings, two to one, National League.
- 2:22:101961 in the first game of two that year, ten innings, five to four, National League.
- 2:22:151955, twelve innings, six to five, National League.
- 2:22:19And 1950, fourteen innings, four to three, National League.
- 2:22:26Robinson having a great night thus far and is facing the left-hander Claude Osteen as we go to the top of the 11th inning.
- 2:22:32Osteen is ready to throw and Brooks takes outside, ball one.
- 2:22:42Robinson right-handed batter, waits for Osteen, the Dodgers next throw, again outside, it's two and oh.
- 2:22:49Well, there are not many people when you start to maneuver now, Sandy, that either manager has left with which to maneuver.
- 2:22:55So I think other than pitchers, the only player Gil Hodges has left is Joe Torrey, the catcher from the Cardinals.
- 2:23:01Grounder on three hops to the shortstop who throws out Robinson, Harrelson over to Hitman.
- 2:23:07One out on the 11th.
- 2:23:09And manager Weaver has only catcher Moses, Roy White if he's able to play, as you said he was hit before the game.
- 2:23:15We don't know if he's in uniform still. And Sandy Alibar.
- 2:23:20Tony Oliva who has walked and fly to right.
- 2:23:24Oliva of course has powered and can go to all fields.
- 2:23:30Gaston realizing he is a left-handed batter pulls him around to pull to right.
- 2:23:36But Oliva as American leaders know can go anyway.
- 2:23:40I think only the center fielder has moved in any one direction.
- 2:23:44Both the right and left fielder are playing sort of straight away.
- 2:23:47He can hit the ball all over but the center fielder has to commit himself one way or the other even so he can just see the ball.
- 2:23:53The pitcher isn't in the way.
- 2:23:55The first pitch from Osteen is high and it's one and 0. It's Tony Oliva, the Minnesota Twins.
- 2:24:03Osteen ready and Oliva fouls it off.
- 2:24:07It's one and one.
- 2:24:09Well I know for example in Europe where they're listening on AFRTS it's not only late here in the United States where it's after 11 o'clock in the Eastern time zone but it's tomorrow morning.
- 2:24:19Many of our American forces and folks overseas are probably getting up and having breakfast and listening to this game.
- 2:24:25Foul back again by Oliva.
- 2:24:28It's one and two. One out, 11th inning, four to four.
- 2:24:33Claude Osteen is the fifth that receivers started.
- 2:24:36Had a fine training. Merritt worked well for his two.
- 2:24:39Then Perry gave up a couple of runs, gives him two more.
- 2:24:42Osteen now working.
- 2:24:46Osteen ready to throw. One, two and there's a drive down the line.
- 2:24:49In right field it is fair.
- 2:24:51Oliva is on his way around first base.
- 2:24:53The rifle on with Clemente and the throw at the second base and I want to tell you Oliva just got there with a double.
- 2:24:58Clemente from the deepest corner by the line.
- 2:25:02Got a ball on one hop to Morgan the second baseman at second.
- 2:25:05But the go ahead run is at second base and here's Davey Johnson looking for his second hit of the night.
- 2:25:11He's got an infield hit, one for four.
- 2:25:15Clemente made a good play on that ball. There's not much you can do with it.
- 2:25:18There's no way to keep it from being a double. Oliva runs too well.
- 2:25:21Clemente got the ball in as quickly as he could with a strong throw.
- 2:25:25But it was an easy double for Tony.
- 2:25:28Davey Johnson right handed batter trying to get Oliva around.
- 2:25:31Ground ball. Oliva has to hold up.
- 2:25:33Charging in from third base is Drabachowicz throwing on to Hickman at first.
- 2:25:35And Johnson is out and Oliva has to hold on.
- 2:25:42Well if there's ever a hero, here's the one for the American Big Dusts far tonight.
- 2:25:46One of them at least.
- 2:25:48In his first All-Star game he single and scored a run in the sixth.
- 2:25:51His line drive sacrifice fly drove in a run in the seventh and he walked in the ninth.
- 2:25:57Ray Fossey and with that in mind, first base open,
- 2:26:01Gil Hodges comes running out to talk to Claud O'Sheen.
- 2:26:05Well with the open base Jim and Roy White as I see now is on deck.
- 2:26:09I'm glad to see that the injury was not bad enough to keep him out of the ball game.
- 2:26:14I think Gil came out to ask Claud whether he'd rather pitch to Fossey or pitch to White
- 2:26:19or whether he knows how to pitch to Fossey just to make sure.
- 2:26:24Fossey as we said and his uniform has been ripping for some time, steps in completely drenched.
- 2:26:29Just as though somebody turned a hose on him, catching behind the plate of this high temperature,
- 2:26:34high humidity night in Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 2:26:37O'Sheen is now ready.
- 2:26:39Strike on the outside corner.
- 2:26:41Fossey looks at it.
- 2:26:42Oliva started off second base, walks back not quite,
- 2:26:45checks around to see where Morgan is, where Harrelson is.
- 2:26:49Second baseman shortstop at the national league.
- 2:26:52Making sure no one is sneaking in behind him.
- 2:26:54O'Sheen working from the stretch, looking back now at Oliva.
- 2:26:57And throwing ground ball.
- 2:26:58Harrelson at shortstop, scoops it up, throws on the first base.
- 2:27:01And he's got a one, one hit.
- 2:27:03One left, he goes to the last with 11th and it's a four to four time.
- 2:27:08At the end of ten and a half innings, it is the American League.
- 2:27:12Four runs, 11 hits, no errors.
- 2:27:15The national league, four runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 2:27:19Jim?
- 2:27:21Well, Clyde Wright has come on the pitch.
- 2:27:23He's a left-hander as we go to the last of the 11th inning.
- 2:27:27And as a matter of fact, Earl Weaver has no more right-handers.
- 2:27:31Still in the both end, Mike Friar of Baltimore, Dave McNally of Baltimore,
- 2:27:35and both are left-handers.
- 2:27:37Sandy Alomar has gone in to play second base.
- 2:27:41So whatever Earl Weaver and the American League do, they're going to do it with left-handers.
- 2:27:52Clyde Wright, 27 years old, born in Johnson City, Tennessee.
- 2:27:56He was one and eight last year, believe it or not.
- 2:28:00This year, he's 12 and six.
- 2:28:04And he's going to face a fellow that's having a good night's,
- 2:28:06switch it to Ken Harrelson, who has two hits and has scored two runs.
- 2:28:15Corner, a left-hander, of the Phillies now, warms up for the national league.
- 2:28:23Harrelson with a 2.66 average.
- 2:28:32Clyde Wright, the owner of a no-hitter against Oakland on July 3rd.
- 2:28:40That's pretty good-hitting ball club, the Oakland Sun.
- 2:28:43Quarter-four to score, last of the 11th.
- 2:28:45Harrelson now steps in as Al Barlich was yelling up to the public address system here.
- 2:28:49Wright ready, swipe, called from Wright.
- 2:28:58Well, this has been quite a ball game.
- 2:29:00The national league came up with three in the last of the ninth, and here we are, 4-4.
- 2:29:03There's a drive down the line, but it's called foul.
- 2:29:06And Harrelson doesn't hit them much better than that.
- 2:29:08He really got around on that ball.
- 2:29:11Now I begin to realize what the Cincinnati Papers quoted the White House as saying about President Nixon.
- 2:29:17He's going to stay until the last out.
- 2:29:20Well, this ball game is now three hours old, still going, and Mr. Nixon is still here.
- 2:29:25Two strikes, that's Harrelson. This one is hit for center field.
- 2:29:28And Amos Otis is right there, moving only a few steps to his right,
- 2:29:31and has it for the first out of the national league, 11th.
- 2:29:37And Gaston, Lance Gaston of San Diego, has walked and popped to the first baseman as the batter.
- 2:29:43Coming out on deck is Joe Morgan.
- 2:29:47Sandy and I pointed out there's not much maneuvering to be done here.
- 2:29:50Sandy Alomar is now in the ball game.
- 2:29:52Moses has not yet played.
- 2:29:54And the pitchers who are left in the American League are all left-handed, ball one.
- 2:30:00Roy White, of course, the switch hitter, was out, ready to swing last time, but never got up.
- 2:30:07Quote-un-un, right, left-hander, moving to the right-hander.
- 2:30:10And Gaston, who does have power, ground ball very fast.
- 2:30:13Alomar goes to his knees, takes it, and throws it onto your Sremski at first base.
- 2:30:16Two down.
- 2:30:20It's interesting to see the way some of the infielders have played on the right side of the infield.
- 2:30:24Your second baseman, your first baseman, the ball gets to them so quickly,
- 2:30:27they have time to get down on one knee to feel the ball before throwing it to first.
- 2:30:33Drops now, and Joe Morgan, the left-hander, steps in against the left-hander, Clyde Wright.
- 2:30:37Four to four, the score, last of the eleventh inning of the 41st Major League All-Star Game.
- 2:30:41The pitch is low to Morgan, ball one.
- 2:30:43Four runs, 11 hits, no errors for the American League.
- 2:30:45Four runs, 7 hits, no errors for the National League.
- 2:30:52Right back and throwing low again.
- 2:31:00Poehner, Wilhelm, and Simpson, who last pitched on Sunday, remain available to manager Gil Hodges.
- 2:31:09Two-and-oh pitch, again low from Wright, and suddenly he's lost the touch and has thrown three low pitches,
- 2:31:15and it's three-and-oh to Joe Morgan.
- 2:31:22Claude Osteen kneeling on deck.
- 2:31:27Three-and-oh pitch, right down the middle, three-and-one.
- 2:31:30Osteen wears the blue and the white of the Dodgers, is wearing a red batting helmet, and for the moment threw me off.
- 2:31:39Three-and-one, Wright, ready to go again.
- 2:31:44Swing and a miss on the three-one pitch.
- 2:31:46Ball popped out of the glove of Fossey, and it's now three-two.
- 2:31:49Jim Osteen is a good-hitting pitcher.
- 2:31:51He has pinch-hitted for the Dodgers many times, but he's not that crazy about hitting against left-handers.
- 2:32:06White with the long weight, now ready on three-two.
- 2:32:10Ground ball, it's fouled.
- 2:32:12Skips past Lumen Harris, the coach at first base, picked up by the bullpen catcher in the National League bullpen.
- 2:32:20It is still three-two, but two out in the last 11th inning.
- 2:32:23Crowd for the moment, very quiet at Riverfront Stadium.
- 2:32:26Beautiful stadium, opened up here at the end of June.
- 2:32:30Three-two pitch.
- 2:32:32He didn't mean to do it, but check swing.
- 2:32:34Ball goes to the shortstop, it goes on the first, and they've got it.
- 2:32:37The runs hit Serreras.
- 2:32:38We're at the end of the 11th inning now, the American League four, the National League four.
- 2:32:43Jim Simpson with Sandy Kofax and Lynn Dillon.
- 2:32:46The all-star game, Cincinnati, Ohio, top of the 12th inning and up for the first time is Sandy Alomar in his first all-star game.
- 2:32:55He's a switch-hitter, 26 years old, born and still lives in Salinas, Puerto Rico.
- 2:33:01Good base runner and having a fine year.
- 2:33:07Alomar hitting a 260 and at one time had a hitting streak.
- 2:33:11Check swing, but the ball is a strike.
- 2:33:14It's 0-1 to Alomar.
- 2:33:17He had a 22-game hitting streak, broken just about two weeks ago at Kansas City.
- 2:33:25Four to four the score.
- 2:33:27Osteen throws outside and it's 1-1 now to Alomar.
- 2:33:33Now no runs at all scored until the sixth inning.
- 2:33:37And the National League went into the last of the ninth inning trailing 4-1.
- 2:33:40Geets flipped it off with a home run.
- 2:33:43Sacrifice fly, tied it up later.
- 2:33:45Ball hits the right field.
- 2:33:46Cometti is there, backs a little bit now, taps his glove and takes it for the first out of the 12.
- 2:33:54Line drive off the bat of Alomar, but to the opposite field.
- 2:33:58And here is the oldest man who is a starter for either team, Luis Aparicio, and he's been there all the way.
- 2:34:06And the other two, the only ones left, who started this game and now in the 12th inning find themselves still here.
- 2:34:15Aparicio fouls one back near a camera position down along the third baseline.
- 2:34:240-1.
- 2:34:29Osteen used to pitch for Cincinnati at one time.
- 2:34:31Foul at the plate now.
- 2:34:32Jumps out in front of the plate on the artificial turf picked up by Geets.
- 2:34:36Well, in case you just joined us, we are in the Riverfront Stadium.
- 2:34:39The score is 4-4.
- 2:34:40And if you didn't know our description of the Riverfront Stadium before, it is almost completely artificially turfed.
- 2:34:45With just 20 by 20 sections around first, second, and third, there is no skin of the infield.
- 2:34:49What used to be the dirt part of the infield is completely artificially turfed.
- 2:34:54This time that's been done in baseball.
- 2:34:560-2 now to Aparicio.
- 2:34:58One out on the 12th, outside pitch for most teammates, 1-2.
- 2:35:03On deck is Carl Yastrowski, who has had quite an all-star game.
- 2:35:07And this is his sixth all-star game and his fourth start.
- 2:35:10It's been a long one.
- 2:35:121-2 pitch, low and in the dirt.
- 2:35:142-2 to Aparicio.
- 2:35:15If you're wondering where Sandy is, Sandy Kovacs, he's moved over for the moment to the television side of our NBC coverage.
- 2:35:20Now this is the 41st Major League All-Star Baseball game.
- 2:35:252-2 now to the right-handed Luis Aparicio, 36 years old, swings and rips one forward.
- 2:35:30The American League dugout bounces off the fence and will be secured down the left-field line by Russ Getz.
- 2:35:35An umpire of the American League.
- 2:35:41Olsteen wiping his brow using the back of the sleeves, wearing the long sleeves tonight.
- 2:35:49Throws now, drive to center field. Gaston started in, now just waits there and takes the line dry for the second out.
- 2:35:55Two balls have been hit hard off Olsteen, a line to the right, now a line to the center, but he's gotten both of them in out.
- 2:36:00And here's Yastrowski.
- 2:36:04Yastrowski single in the first, hits the first pitch and back Willie Mays to the center field wall before he caught it in the fourth.
- 2:36:10Single in the sixth, single and slow run in the eighth, and down to the first baseman in the tenth.
- 2:36:18Yastrowski has 21 home runs this year, but as a left-hander against a left-hander did he take a swing.
- 2:36:26Goes to his left knee.
- 2:36:29Big hard swing, trying to perhaps end it and miss the 12th inning.
- 2:36:42Ball pops out of the mat, but the glove of Dick Beech, but Barlich says that it did tick the bat of Carl Yastrowski, so that's strike two.
- 2:36:51Yastrowski did not offer the ball, but had his bat out over the plate, holding it high, and it did hit it.
- 2:36:59Hickman, as all good infielders do in the late innings, is guarding that line down along first base.
- 2:37:04Doesn't want the extra base hit. Yastrowski fouls it off to the left, and out of play up behind home plate.
- 2:37:10Two-go and two, and now again that flag in right center field begins to blow.
- 2:37:13For a long time the winds were still here in Cincinnati.
- 2:37:20Two strikes to Yastrowski, two out on the 12th inning for the American League.
- 2:37:24Blowing away, it's one and two.
- 2:37:28From the National League, Yusever, then Merritt, then Kerry, then Gibson, then Osteen.
- 2:37:33The American League, Palmer, McDowell, Perry, Hunter, Peterson, Stadlmeyer, and Clyde Wright is working.
- 2:37:39Yastrowski hits the drive to center field. In comes Gaston, as it boy doesn't.
- 2:37:43It got by Yastrowski, digging for second. Gaston's throw is low and bounds away from Harrelson.
- 2:37:49Gaston thought he had it, but slow in retrieving it, and then slow in doing something with it.
- 2:37:54Yastrowski never hesitated and teamed a second, catching Gaston by surprise, and his ball was thrown into the artificial turf.
- 2:38:00And the go-ahead run is at second base, and Kyle Yastrowski has his fourth base hit of the evening.
- 2:38:06And Horton, who is two for two, is the batter. And Dick Dietz is pointing at first base, saying, put him on.
- 2:38:19Oh, they're going to put Woody Horton on. Home run threat.
- 2:38:24Trying to get to Amos Otis, a youngster from Kansas City, who has fly to right and hit into a double play.
- 2:38:34Otis, though, carries with him a fine batting average of 310. That's ball three.
- 2:38:38Now his team goes to beach, ball four. And Horton drops down to first base, and with two outmen on first and second, Amos Otis,
- 2:38:46a youngster from Kansas City, gets the chance to do it all.
- 2:38:54Third walk, given up by nationally pitching. This one, of course, intentional.
- 2:39:01Otis came over to Kansas City in the phrase that brought Joe Ford to Kansas City.
- 2:39:11Right-handed batter. 23 years old. Drive to right field.
- 2:39:15Kavetti started in, now goes back, puts his glove up, and one-hands it for the final out.
- 2:39:19Oskeen in a lot of trouble, and got out of a lot of trouble.
- 2:39:23No runs, one hit, no errors, two left. In the middle of the 12th, it's four to four.
- 2:39:30Jim Simpson with Sandy Koufax and Lynn Dillon back in Cincinnati, last of the 12th.
- 2:39:34And Joe Torrey is the batter, and this is the last man that Gil Hodges has to use aside from pitches.
- 2:39:40Fly right to pitcher and throws. It's outside.
- 2:39:46Torrey hitting a 3-07, 10 home runs, 47 RBIs. And, of course, he plays now with the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:39:53That's been a catcher, first baseman, and a little bit of third base.
- 2:39:57One-and-oh count from right misses. Yastremski's fourth-hit ties an all-star game record.
- 2:40:03Joe Medwick had four hits in 1937. Ted Williams in 1946 had the name Carl Yastremski in 1970.
- 2:40:13Two-and-oh. Pitch is inside, and as right, when he ran in the double back in the 11th inning
- 2:40:20and began to miss for Joe Morgan, his pitches were all low.
- 2:40:26Three-and-oh now, and he hasn't come up to the waist yet of Torrey.
- 2:40:30He's been down by the knees or lower. Comes down with the automatic strike this time, chest high.
- 2:40:35It's three-and-one. Torrey looks down to the rocher to see what it is he's supposed to do.
- 2:40:39Four to four. We're in the last of the 12th.
- 2:40:43And as Sandy pointed out, and as you know, I'm sure, being the last of the 12th, the last of any inning,
- 2:40:47the National League has the advantage. One run, and they've got it.
- 2:40:49Drive. Robinson is handcuffed by it, but the good third baseman throws. What a play.
- 2:40:55Yastremski went high in the air. He was off the bag and leaked in mid-air, and tied towards, he went far.
- 2:41:00John Weiss called Torrey out. Joe had something to say, but goes back.
- 2:41:05Bucks Robinson on this Astro turf was handcuffed, came up with the ball, and had to throw while leaping in mid-air.
- 2:41:26Yastremski left in mid-air and turned, spinning while in mid-air, and tied out towards,
- 2:41:32who of course is not one of the fastest men in the world, and therefore that play could develop,
- 2:41:36and Joe still not reach first base.
- 2:41:38Now Roberto Clemente in a vicious line drive that Otis Hall down in center field has drive in the tying run.
- 2:41:44In the ninth inning takes strike one from Clyde Wright.
- 2:41:49At that time Wright was in trouble. Three in order to Torrey.
- 2:41:52He got a called strike and got him on a 3-1 pitch.
- 2:41:55And a couple of fine bits of playing by Brooks Robinson and Carter Yastremski.
- 2:41:59Pitch is low, and it's one and one to Roberto Clemente.
- 2:42:09Clemente a.355 hitter in the regular season.
- 2:42:12Hits it off the fifths, and it's picked up by Sandy Alomar, who throws on to Yastremski,
- 2:42:16and they're two out in the national league 12.
- 2:42:28That brings up Pete Rose, and boy, Rose now switches around the back from the right side,
- 2:42:32the switch hitter, and with the Cincinnati fans love to see him end it.
- 2:42:36The Cincinnati hitters have not been hitting tonight, and Rose has walked and struck out twice,
- 2:42:41well has struck out twice, then struck out three times.
- 2:42:44Right throws, low and in the dirt, dug out by Fossey.
- 2:42:55Wright ready for the one and oh pitch. Two out, last of the 12th, four to four in this all-star baseball game.
- 2:43:02Very high, and it's one and one. Make that two and oh.
- 2:43:06Thank you, Paul.
- 2:43:22Wright taking his time on the mound. We'll repeat again. It is a very hot, humid, muggy night.
- 2:43:27Here comes the two and oh pitch to Rose, and he laces the single up the middle.
- 2:43:31Otis comes over, goes down to one knee. Rose starts and goes, going to second base,
- 2:43:35but Otis hustles his throw into Alomar, and he retreats.
- 2:43:38For the winning run, Pete Rose, and that's the first Cincinnati player hit.
- 2:43:45And now the batter, Billy Drabachowicz, off the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:43:503.41 is average, but tonight he's flying to a very short left and grounded the short.
- 2:43:57Four to four to score, two out, last of the 12th.
- 2:44:01Right throws, swing by Drabachowicz, strike.
- 2:44:06Four runs, 12 hits. No errors for the American League. Four runs, eight hits. No errors for the National League.
- 2:44:11And our robotic veteran of 30 years in the majors is having a long night tonight behind home plate at the umpire.
- 2:44:18A swinging strike by Drabachowicz, and on each occasion he's been completely fooled by the Clyde Wright pitches.
- 2:44:25He's been played just up and down the road from one another.
- 2:44:28Drabachowicz up at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, right down at the Big A in Anaheim, California.
- 2:44:35Two strikes now. Rose leading off at first base.
- 2:44:39Still on the infield portion, meaning the dirt.
- 2:44:42Pitch is inside and low, and it's one and two.
- 2:44:47All game creeping up on being three and a half hours long.
- 2:44:56Each team has nearly exhausted its resources of hitters.
- 2:45:00Hine away from Drabachowicz, it's a 2-2.
- 2:45:05On deck, of course, is Jim Hickman of the Cubs.
- 2:45:14Joe Horner, Wayne Simpson, and Hoyt Rollhelm pitchers all are the only ones that Gil Hodges has left.
- 2:45:21Right throws, ground ball, Aparicio can't get to it.
- 2:45:25Goes in the left field. He rolls the winning run, stops at second base.
- 2:45:30And Hickman, a hero for the Chicago Cubs late last year and all of this year, comes up to the plate.
- 2:45:40The right-handed batter facing the left-handed slide right, but as we pointed out, Earl Weaver of Baltimore in the American League has only left-handers left.
- 2:45:48Both Baltimoreans, Mike Foyard and Dave McNally.
- 2:45:56Pete Rose at second, Dill Drabachowicz at first, Jim Hickman at bat.
- 2:46:05Jim Hickman a 335 hitter this year.
- 2:46:1319 home runs, 63 RBI's.
- 2:46:16Right looks back, throws, Hickman takes high, ball one.
- 2:46:22On deck is Dick Deeks, who has hit a home run tonight and lined at a second baseman.
- 2:46:313-in, 4-4 the score with the last of the 12th inning.
- 2:46:36A throw, strike right at the knees.
- 2:46:38One and one.
- 2:46:40Bollocks behind the plate we told you about for the National League, John Rice of the American League at first base.
- 2:46:44Frank Stocori of the National League at second, Bill Haller of the American League at third.
- 2:46:47Frank Deslen of the National League in the right field line, and Russ Gets of the American League along the left field line.
- 2:46:54One and one to the waiting Jim Hickman.
- 2:46:56And right into the stretch, looking back and throws up the middle.
- 2:47:00Rose is on her way around, picked up by Otis.
- 2:47:03Rose is coming to the plate, throws a throw, he's in.
- 2:47:06It's all over, the National League win.
- 2:47:15Keith Rose barreled into Ray Fosse, who is slowing getting up.
- 2:47:20Trying to block the plate, the ball wasn't there yet, and Rose just rolled her shoulder into him.
- 2:47:25And Fosse is being led away, but the National League has now won its eighth in a row.
- 2:47:31The line drive single of the Chicago Cubs, Jim Hickman, scores Cincinnati's Keith Rose.
- 2:47:37The final score, the National League 5, the American League 4, and we'll be back in just a moment with a recap of the game's highlights right after this message.
- 2:47:49Well, they'll talk about this for a long time, that makes 23 wins for the National League, 17 for the American League in one tie, 4-1.
- 2:47:58The score going into the last of the ninth inning, the National League tied it up.
- 2:48:02Then in the twelfth inning, Rose singled with two out, followed by Grabarcovich's single that just nearly went under the glove of Luis Aparicio, the 36-year-old shortstop going to his right.
- 2:48:13Rose stopped at second, and Jim Hickman, the man that we have said has been a star over the latter part of last year and the early part of this year for the Chicago Cubs, and was kicked over Billy Williams by Gil Hodges.
- 2:48:24And that raised a lot of eyebrows, but Gil Hodges is vindicated as it is Hickman, who drives in the winning run, and it's five runs on 10 hits, no errors for the National League, four runs, 12 hits, and no errors for the American League.
- 2:48:38Their eighth win in a row for the National League, and their eighth time in a row, they have not committed an error.
- 2:48:43We'll be back with more highlights of tonight's All-Star Game in just a moment.
- 2:49:13All right, we're going to wrap up. Here is Len Diller.
- 2:49:21How can a sales clerk who joined the retail clerk's union only a few years ago retire with $100 a month or more in addition to her Social Security?
- 2:49:31Well, her union agreement provides that her employer contribute into a pension trust for each hour of employment, and all active years of work are credited to her pension fund.
- 2:49:42For more information, check your telephone book for the retail clerk's union, or write to the retail clerk's international association, Washington, D.C., 2006.
- 2:49:55Jim, for the final wrap-up.
- 2:49:57And for a final word, Sandy Kofaris.
- 2:49:59Thank you, Jim. Well, this is another great ball game, and as the pattern held out, the National League just keeps winning the extra inning ball games.
- 2:50:07Good pitching on both clubs, occasional little spotty pitching, a tough situation for Clyde Wright.
- 2:50:13Every pitch he threw could have been the last pitch of the ball game. He was in sudden death all the time, but everybody did a good job.
- 2:50:19And the only thing I can hope is that Ray Posse wasn't hurt. He's having a fine year. I'd hate to see anybody hurt in the All-Star Game.
- 2:50:26Now, Charlie Hussle, Pete Rose, was going to score that. As a matter of fact, Joe Cronin of the American League, and of course Pete plays in the National League,
- 2:50:33came over to him during the workouts here and said, Pete, you ought to stop going in head first. You're liable to get hurt.
- 2:50:38Well, he really came in head first and bailed into Posse, but scored the winning run, and Posse did walk off, apparently under his own power.
- 2:50:45I think he did, Jim. The problem was with his arm, and you never know. You just hope that he's all right.
- 2:50:51Charlie Hussle, as you call him, Pete Rose, what everybody calls him, it looked like he was going to slide head first, and looked up and saw the catcher had the plate blocked.
- 2:51:00And you just can't slide head first into those shin guards. So at the last minute, he just sort of hit Posse with a body block and broke open play,
- 2:51:08and did not let Posse even catch the ball, and then just fell down in a heap, both of them on the plate.
- 2:51:14Well, to recap for you, five runs, ten hits, no errors for the National League. Four runs, twelve hits, no errors for the American League.
- 2:51:21And the losing pitcher, Clyde Wright, the winning pitcher was Claude Osteen. It's the eighth in a row. It's a three hours and 19 minutes.
- 2:51:29And twelve innings to play here at the brand new Riverfront Stadium. I'm going to show you what's going on now.
- 2:51:33They're putting the top down, but since it is all artificially turf, all they have to do is put a little top over first base, second base, third base, over the pitcher's mound, and over around home plate.
- 2:51:44They can leave the entire infield open because they do have artificial turf. Eight wins in a row for the National League. They haven't decided where the next All-Star meeting will be, but NBC will be there, and I hope you'll be with us.
- 2:51:55In the meantime, you have a year's worth of memories of this fine All-Star game at the brand new Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.
