- 0:00Speaker 1: But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance,
- 0:04Speaker 1: or on the height of his stature, because I have
- 0:08Speaker 1: refused him. For the Lord seeth not as man seeth.
- 0:12Speaker 1: For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord
- 0:16Speaker 1: looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16.7 Thank you, God,
- 0:23Speaker 1: that the same anointing that rested on David in 1
- 0:25Speaker 1: Samuel 16 is the same anointing that rests on my life.
- 0:31Speaker 1: When men try to overlook me because of what they
- 0:33Speaker 1: perceive as a hindrance, I thank you that you will
- 0:36Speaker 1: anoint me in their presence, because you determine elevation by
- 0:41Speaker 1: the heart. Therefore, keep my heart pure through all circumstances
- 0:46Speaker 1: and seasons of my life, because this will be the

- 0:56Speaker 1: placed David in the palace, the place of his future destiny,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I thank you for placing me in the vicinity of
- 1:02Speaker 1: my destiny as well. Father, you can call upon me
- 1:06Speaker 1: because my heart is positioned to do your will fully
- 1:10Speaker 1: and completely. If you anoint me and choose me, I'll go.

- 1:44Speaker 2: David is chosen. In our last story, we learned about
- 1:48Speaker 2: Saul's rejection as king. His pride, greed, and disobedience lost
- 1:54Speaker 2: him the favor of God. Samuel wept over Saul's fall.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Now we will learn about God's new king, chosen not
- 2:02Speaker 2: for his stature or status, but his heart, inspired by
- 2:07Speaker 2: the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:14Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In yesterday's story, we saw
- 2:18Speaker 3: how Saul disobeyed God and lied to Samuel when confronted
- 2:22Speaker 3: with his sin. Saul had rejected God and chosen to
- 2:26Speaker 3: exalt himself rather than obey God. As a result, God
- 2:30Speaker 3: tells Saul that he will lose his throne and it
- 2:33Speaker 3: will be given to another. Today we will hear how
- 2:36Speaker 3: God chooses a young man, a shepherd boy, that nobody
- 2:39Speaker 3: would have expected to be God's pick for such a
- 2:42Speaker 3: mighty king. But this young man had the heart that
- 2:45Speaker 3: God desired in a leader, and he would grow into
- 2:48Speaker 3: the greatest king Israel would ever know. Let's listen now
- 2:52Speaker 3: to today's reading.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Samuel mourned the loss of Saul's soul to the burden
- 2:59Speaker 2: of power. He mourned the state of Israel under a
- 3:02Speaker 2: king with a weakness for status and fame. God came
- 3:06Speaker 2: to Samuel in his mourning and said, Why do you
- 3:09Speaker 2: grieve over Saul? I have rejected him. Go, fill up
- 3:13Speaker 2: your horn with oil and go to the home of
- 3:16Speaker 2: Jesse in Bethlehem. I have provided Israel with a new
- 3:20Speaker 2: king among his sons. Samuel's heart began to pound. Excitement
- 3:25Speaker 2: filled his old bones. He gathered sacrifices to be made
- 3:29Speaker 2: in Bethlehem, for he did not want Saul to know
- 3:32Speaker 2: he was searching for a king. Samuel greeted Jesse, and
- 3:36Speaker 2: the two of them ate together and consecrated the land
- 3:39Speaker 2: for God. Samuel looked at Jesse intently and asked if
- 3:43Speaker 2: he could bring forth his sons. When they came, Samuel
- 3:47Speaker 2: looked at the oldest, Elias. He was a well-built man, tall, muscular,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and had charismatic qualities that made up a king. Surely
- 3:56Speaker 2: this must be the Lord's anointed, Samuel thought to himself.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yet God interrupted him and said, Do not look at
- 4:03Speaker 2: his stature or looks, for I do not see as
- 4:06Speaker 2: man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but I
- 4:10Speaker 2: look upon the heart. Abinadab came forth before Samuel, and
- 4:15Speaker 2: he too was not the one God had chosen. Seven
- 4:18Speaker 2: more of his sons passed by Samuel, and none of
- 4:21Speaker 2: them were the one God had spoken of. Frustrated and
- 4:24Speaker 2: a bit flustered, Samuel turned to Jesse and said, Are
- 4:28Speaker 2: these all your sons? Jesse scratched his head and said, Well,
- 4:33Speaker 2: there is still the youngest. He is out in the
- 4:35Speaker 2: field tending to the sheep. David was in the fields.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The day was almost over, and the cool spring air
- 4:42Speaker 2: whistled across the grass where the sheep fed. David often
- 4:46Speaker 2: took them to a hill not too far from home
- 4:49Speaker 2: where he would sit and look at the stars. David
- 4:52Speaker 2: sat in complete peace, but still on alert for any
- 4:56Speaker 2: predators that may lurk around the corner. David took a
- 4:59Speaker 2: deep breath, soaking in the last rays of good sunlight.
- 5:03Speaker 2: As his eyes were closed, he could hear his father's
- 5:06Speaker 2: voice in the distance beckoning him. Slowly and methodically, David
- 5:10Speaker 2: corralled the sheep and stepped into his father's house. Samuel
- 5:15Speaker 2: was sitting when David entered into the home. He had
- 5:17Speaker 2: a smile on his face. He was a handsome young man,
- 5:21Speaker 2: no older than 17, and had beautiful eyes that made
- 5:24Speaker 2: you feel warm and welcomed. God whispered to Samuel and said, Arise,
- 5:30Speaker 2: for this is my king. So Samuel stood up slowly
- 5:36Speaker 2: and laughed. He looked at David and anointed him with oil.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Samuel did not tell David or Jesse that he was
- 5:43Speaker 2: going to be king of Israel, for he knew that
- 5:46Speaker 2: the Lord would call David in due time. From that
- 5:49Speaker 2: time forward, the Spirit of God was upon David. Weeks
- 5:53Speaker 2: had passed, and Saul was greatly disturbed at night. His
- 5:57Speaker 2: dreams consumed him, and his days were filled with anxiety, paranoia,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and loneliness. God had departed from him, and he could
- 6:06Speaker 2: not bear the sight of himself in the Saul's servant
- 6:10Speaker 2: saw how tormented he was and offered respite in the
- 6:12Speaker 2: form of music. My lord, the servant said, I know
- 6:17Speaker 2: of a man named Jesse who is in Bethlehem. His
- 6:20Speaker 2: son is very skilled with the lyre and could possibly
- 6:23Speaker 2: offer you rest with his music. So Saul sent for David,
- 6:27Speaker 2: and David served under Saul as his musician and armor-bearer.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Saul grew to love David as a son, and whenever
- 6:35Speaker 2: he was tormented, David would play music and worship God
- 6:38Speaker 2: in his presence. Listening to David's worship was the closest
- 6:42Speaker 2: to God he had felt in months. David was only
- 6:46Speaker 2: a few feet from the throne that God had called
- 6:48Speaker 2: him to sit upon, yet neither him nor Saul knew that.
- 6:53Speaker 2: God was in their midst. He would raise up David
- 6:56Speaker 2: as he once did Moses, Joshua, and every judge that
- 6:59Speaker 2: came before him. David was his chosen hero. destined to
- 7:05Speaker 2: change the course of Israel forever.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Samuel was distraught over Saul's sin and rejection of God's ways.
- 7:16Speaker 3: He took it personally, though it was not him that
- 7:18Speaker 3: Saul had rejected, it was God. This is the same
- 7:22Speaker 3: as when the people rejected God as their king and
- 7:25Speaker 3: Samuel grieved over their demands for a king. Clearly, this
- 7:29Speaker 3: prophet had a heart for his people and a heart
- 7:32Speaker 3: for the Lord. And it saddened him to see the
- 7:35Speaker 3: state of this beloved nation and the leader that God
- 7:37Speaker 3: had appointed. But everything was going just as God had said.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So God told Samuel to dry his tears and to
- 7:45Speaker 3: get his horn ready with anointing oil. The time had
- 7:49Speaker 3: come to choose a new man that God was calling
- 7:52Speaker 3: to the job. He sent Samuel to Jesse, a man
- 7:56Speaker 3: in Bethlehem who has many sons. It was from Jesse's
- 7:59Speaker 3: household that God would call a new king. So Samuel
- 8:03Speaker 3: and Jesse share a meal and consecrate the land. Then
- 8:06Speaker 3: Samuel asked him to call his sons. The oldest is
- 8:09Speaker 3: presented to him. Samuel sees Eliab and is sure this
- 8:14Speaker 3: will be God's pick. But God says to Samuel in
- 8:17Speaker 3: 1 Samuel 16 and verse 7, Do not look on
- 8:20Speaker 3: his appearance or on the height of his stature, because
- 8:24Speaker 3: I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as
- 8:27Speaker 3: man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the
- 8:31Speaker 3: Lord looks on the heart. So one at a time,
- 8:34Speaker 3: six strong young men are presented to Jesse. Each one,
- 8:38Speaker 3: from a human perspective, seems to be fit to be
- 8:41Speaker 3: the king, but God is silent on each of them.
- 8:45Speaker 3: God is far less interested in what seems humanly possible
- 8:48Speaker 3: or logical. God does not need the strongest or the
- 8:52Speaker 3: brightest to accomplish his purposes. He used Moses, a timid speaker,
- 8:57Speaker 3: to lead the people out of Egypt. He used Joseph,
- 8:59Speaker 3: a prisoner and a slave, to save a nation from starvation.
- 9:03Speaker 3: God looks much deeper for a heart that is willing
- 9:06Speaker 3: and fully committed to Him. So Samuel asks if there
- 9:10Speaker 3: are any more sons, and there is just one more.
- 9:14Speaker 3: But he is an unlikely choice. David wasn't even present
- 9:18Speaker 3: during the survey of the previous sons. He was a
- 9:21Speaker 3: young lad that was out tending the sheep in the field.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Samuel says he wants to see him too, so he
- 9:27Speaker 3: sent for David. The moment David enters, God tells Samuel
- 9:31Speaker 3: to arise and anoint him because he is the one
- 9:34Speaker 3: that God has chosen. Samuel does just as he is instructed,
- 9:39Speaker 3: and from that day on, God's spirit was upon David.
- 9:43Speaker 3: This unlikely king was now the man who had a
- 9:47Speaker 3: heart for God to lead the nation. Meanwhile, Saul was
- 9:50Speaker 3: battling a tormented mind. God's presence had left him, and
- 9:54Speaker 3: without God's presence, Saul was a man without any peace.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So his servants told him, of a young man who
- 10:00Speaker 3: played the harp, the son of a man named Jesse.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So David, now the anointed king, still a young man,
- 10:10Speaker 3: a shepherd boy, was called to play for Saul, and
- 10:14Speaker 3: the music soothed and calmed the king. David remained with
- 10:18Speaker 3: Saul in his service, And of course, that seems to
- 10:21Speaker 3: be an unlikely path for the next king to take,
- 10:23Speaker 3: but God was at work and his purposes are being fulfilled.
- 10:27Speaker 3: This was just the beginning. Soon David would conquer more
- 10:32Speaker 3: than the evil spirits that tormented Saul. He would slay
- 10:35Speaker 3: a giant that struck fear in all of Israel. And
- 10:38Speaker 3: we'll tell that story the next time. Dear God, thank
- 10:43Speaker 3: you for the story of David, that you seek people
- 10:46Speaker 3: like him after your own heart. God, that you will
