Transcript
- 0:05All right, Jay felon here and thank you for listening to the
- 0:08slippery slope. So you know quite often I've
- 0:12been talking probably the last couple of months about China and
- 0:17questioning what their desires are for the region.
- 0:20Obviously they're trying to project power into the region.
- 0:24I believe this is why the trying to do these deals with all these
- 0:26island nations in our region. It will not surprise me if They
- 0:30end up with some kind of military base or try to put a
- 0:32military base in the Solomon Islands and as I've spoken at
- 0:36before I do think, unless rhetoric changes from China,
- 0:41from America, from Taiwan, from Japan from Australia, I think
- 0:46we're probably going to head for War.
- 0:48I just think that's the way it is because it seems like an all
- 0:52those. All specially China seems like
- 0:55they really want one, they want to, I think they want to show
- 1:00They pale, they've built up this big military and I think they
- 1:05would like to show the rest of the world.
- 1:07Hey, this is what we can do and Taiwan would be a good
- 1:10expression of that. Anyway, this brings me to this
- 1:14article, which came through on crikey, the headline says
- 1:18Russian invasion. China, lead public fears here in
- 1:22Australia. So, Russia's invasion of Ukraine
- 1:25and potential conflict over Taiwan have topped.
- 1:28Straley has concerns And this is according to a new poll, so a
- 1:32large majority of Australian. See China as a military threat
- 1:36while confidence, in president Xi Jinping sits at record lows,
- 1:41the quite frankly, a dance. I don't understand how we could
- 1:45anyone can ever have confidence in president Xi Jinping or any
- 1:50authoritarian Nations such as China.
- 1:53This is in, this is what really I find hard to understand when
- 1:57we're dealing. When we have these little deals
- 1:59going With the nation like China, they're an authoritarian
- 2:02nation and it's not like the people themselves, okay?
- 2:06They might be nice, if find you can trust them.
- 2:08But the government's because if it's an authoritarian Nation,
- 2:12how can we do these deals and think that we can trust them?
- 2:17It's always just baffles me. Anyway, going on in this, it
- 2:21says that most Australians would support the Defence Force being
- 2:25becoming engaged in a conflict between Taiwan and China.
- 2:29China. Wow.
- 2:31Okay. With concerns about a potential
- 2:33War outstripping. The previously leading concerns
- 2:36over con covid-19 and climate change.
- 2:40So, the research shows the extent to which Russia's
- 2:43invasion of Ukraine has upended Australia's thoughts about their
- 2:47own security. This is a polling director.
- 2:49Natasha, Chasm has said more than two-thirds of respondents
- 2:53listed Russia at the top of a list of threats to Australia's
- 2:57vital interests while I've sent also raising concerns about
- 3:02China's foreign policy. So Australia's new government
- 3:06will find support for more defense spending tough policies
- 3:11towards China and Russia and stronger engagement in our
- 3:15region and on the world stage Ms. Chasm said, there's a
- 3:20growing awareness of the countries in our region at that
- 3:23are democracies and concern. About the authoritarian States
- 3:28Australians remain positive. Positive at globalization and
- 3:32free trade and far fewer. See covid-19 as a threat in
- 3:362022. I wonder why that is so three.
- 3:39Quarters of respondents said, it's either very or somewhat
- 3:43likely China will become a military threat to Australia in
- 3:47the next 20 years. Well represent which represents
- 3:52an increase of 29 Points since 2019 like this that's very
- 3:57generous saying it's likely that China will become a military
- 4:01threat to Australia in the next 20 years.
- 4:05Sorry I think people really don't know or understand or
- 4:08they're really not comprehending what China is doing what China
- 4:11has been doing for the last couple of years.
- 4:14China is already a military threat.
- 4:17They already project power, they are They didn't mind sending
- 4:21their little surveillance ships or they're being surveillance
- 4:23ships and circumnavigating Australia, they don't mind
- 4:27projecting power. And in trying to bully
- 4:31Australian aircraft when we're in international waters, they
- 4:35are already a military threat happen, we say what's what we'll
- 4:40do you live in? If you think that it's that
- 4:41China will become a military threat within the next. 20
- 4:45years, people there already a threat go on.
- 4:49More than two-thirds say a conflict between the US and
- 4:53China is a critical threat in. Just over half, say the
- 4:57Australian Defence Force should be called upon if the u.s.
- 5:01intervened in a conflict. Over Taiwan the prospect of a
- 5:06military base in the Pacific. After Beijing has concerns, the
- 5:11majority of Australians, while 93% thing foreign aid in the
- 5:17Pacific should be increased. Fears about the rise of
- 5:21authoritarianism including in the indo-pacific, has resulted
- 5:25in overwhelming support for the acquisition of nuclear
- 5:29submarines and participation in security alliances like caucus
- 5:34and the quad seventy percent are in favor of nuclear-powered
- 5:39submarines and just over half the population.
- 5:41Want to see an increase in defense spending just over half
- 5:46say orcas and the quad alliances make Australia safe.
- 5:50Also only one in ten. Respondents said, they have a
- 5:53lot or some confidence in president she to do the right
- 5:57thing regarding world affairs. Well, I don't think, but no
- 6:03confidence in him doing the right thing when it comes to
- 6:06world affairs. So, the release of the results
- 6:09come less than a week after China's, ambassador to
- 6:12Australia, told the Australia, China, China relations
- 6:15Institute. The country was not seeking to
- 6:18alter the current rules based World Order.
- 6:21That's natural. China supports necessary reform.
- 6:26This funny, it supports necessary reform, or what?
- 6:30It's deems as Serie fault. Anything within their favor,
- 6:34anything that tips, the scales towards them, that's the
- 6:37necessary reform that ID and improvements to the
- 6:42international order system. So as to make it more just and
- 6:46Equitable, but China does not seek to start a new one.
- 6:50The this is what Xiao qian has said well yeah they don't want
- 6:54to start a new one, they just want to tilt it more with in
- 6:57their favor. That's what they want to do
- 6:59because the new one Works already, they want reform so it
- 7:04all goes towards them. It also says that he says, sorry
- 7:08China will firmly uphold International System with the
- 7:11United States at its core. The international order based on
- 7:15international law. Like I said, China wants to be
- 7:20the top dog, I've said this before in previous podcast, they
- 7:23want to be known as definitely as a superpower.
- 7:27I believe that they are pushing. They really want to become the
- 7:31soup. Out in the world.
- 7:32They are pushing for this power projection with specially within
- 7:36this region of Australia. They don't like a nation like
- 7:41Australia which obviously we don't have the population, they
- 7:44do. But we do have quite a good
- 7:47military and we are able to project power, probably a lot
- 7:51more than what the what a nation of our size would generally be
- 7:56able to do and that's only because of our wealth in reality
- 7:59but we are able to project power.
- 8:01Quite well. So, China is trying to curb
- 8:04that, they want to make it that they are the military might
- 8:07definitely in this region and they want us to be seen as the
- 8:12preeminent superpower. Like I said, like I said before,
- 8:18this is definitely one to watch, keep an eye on what's going to
- 8:21happen. Obviously with everything I
- 8:23believe eyes on God. Jesus is the answer.
- 8:27Okay. Not like we have to freak out.
- 8:29However, these are still things which will affect the people of
- 8:34Australia, for sure, in probably America.
- 8:37So they're going to affect our region.
- 8:40It's definitely something we should be watching.
- 8:42Definitely something that's my opinion.
- 8:45Please like, share. All that good stuff.
- 8:49Thanks for listening to the slippery.
- 8:50Slope.
