- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediated podcast. Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer
- 0:15Speaker 1: new Art, and today we're joined by eight special guests,
- 0:19Speaker 1: which also happened to be eight people who have never
- 0:21Speaker 1: played Mediata Trivia before. I'm sorry, seven people. Plus we
- 0:25Speaker 1: have Clay Nucombe who has not only played, but he's
- 0:27Speaker 1: one right now. This episode is being recorded at the
- 0:31Speaker 1: First Light Hooting Nanny in the First Light flagship store.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So an honor of being here, I've grabbed eight of
- 0:36Speaker 1: my favorite First Light ambassadors to test him in a
- 0:40Speaker 1: game of Meat Eater Trivia. Joining me is Sam Soulholt,
- 0:43Speaker 1: Thomas Crick, Bendettamani Lydia Smith, Tony Peterson, Clay Hayes, Jess Johnson,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and Clay Nwcombe. Now we're going to do this since
- 0:52Speaker 1: most of you folks are new to the Meat Eater Podcast,
- 0:54Speaker 1: We're gonna go around the room. Have you introduced yourself,
- 0:57Speaker 1: give a little elevator pitch about what you do. I'm
- 1:01Speaker 1: Thomas Crick. I run a dentical draw with my brother
- 1:03Speaker 1: and Nate out of Nebraska. We're an outdoor media company,
- 1:06Speaker 1: so you can find us on YouTube at identical draw.
- 1:09Speaker 1: His brother looks just like him. That's a good one. Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I'm Jess Johnson. I'm the Government Affairs director for the
- 1:16Speaker 1: Wyoming Wildlife Federation. I'm the one hunting and angling lobbyist
- 1:19Speaker 1: in the state of Wyoming. UM. I am down in Lander, Wyoming,
- 1:23Speaker 1: hunt all over the West, and I'm one of the
- 1:25Speaker 1: Artemis Sportswomen co founders. M My name is Bendada Monty,
- 1:30Speaker 1: otherwise known as shed Crazy and uh. I like to
- 1:34Speaker 1: pick up horns and party. That's about all I do.
- 1:36Speaker 1: You can find me finding on YouTube Instagram under shed
- 1:39Speaker 1: Crazy like to have a good time. My name is
- 1:42Speaker 1: Tony Peterson and I am a full time met eater
- 1:44Speaker 1: employee now who I think most of my job, asides
- 1:47Speaker 1: writing articles and filming some stuff, is to keep the
- 1:49Speaker 1: lights on for Mark Kenyon so he can go fish
- 1:51Speaker 1: every single day of his life and post pictures of
- 1:54Speaker 1: cutthroat trout on Instagram. I think that's my main gig.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I'm Sam so Whole. I am a photographer videographer in
- 2:01Speaker 1: the hunting industry as well as the co owner of
- 2:04Speaker 1: public Land Teas and uh. Anybody listening might know me
- 2:07Speaker 1: better as a guy who drove a bus around for
- 2:09Speaker 1: a couple of years talking about conservation. I'm Lydia Smith
- 2:13Speaker 1: and I'm a full time wildlife artist as well as
- 2:16Speaker 1: a hunting guide in the fall. Um, I'm really passionate
- 2:18Speaker 1: about archery, l hunting and kind of that's where I
- 2:21Speaker 1: take my passion mostly. Clay Nucom I'm a coon hunter,
- 2:26Speaker 1: That's all I do. Clay Hayes, I'm primarily a YouTube
- 2:30Speaker 1: content creator. Uh focus non traditional archery, traditional bow hunting,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and I also happened to win Season eative alone right on. Yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: better way to us some up these eight folks is
- 2:42Speaker 1: that there's some of my favorite people to follow on Instagram,
- 2:44Speaker 1: So you should go give them a follow because it's
- 2:47Speaker 1: uh some of the best hunting content you'll find on
- 2:49Speaker 1: that app. Now, Clay Newcombe, you've played trivia before. What's
- 2:53Speaker 1: your advice to these seven new man I really hope
- 2:58Speaker 1: Steve and Brodie don't listen to this, but the best
- 3:01Speaker 1: news that all of us have is Stephen Brodie aren't here,
- 3:04Speaker 1: um because they're really good. So, uh, my best advice
- 3:09Speaker 1: to you is go with your gut. Usually that first
- 3:12Speaker 1: instinct is right, and then try to be as obscure
- 3:17Speaker 1: as you possibly can with spelling and specificity, and usually
- 3:22Speaker 1: with a little bit of social tact you can get
- 3:25Speaker 1: Spencer to accept the answer and maybe, you know, cover
- 3:29Speaker 1: yourself in a mistake that was you know, you didn't
- 3:33Speaker 1: really know, but you kind of just were like, uh,
- 3:36Speaker 1: bus stagging off, you know, and be like, that's that's
- 3:40Speaker 1: a good read on the game. Yeah, that's my advice. Now,
- 3:44Speaker 1: if you're not familiar, this is a ten round quiz
- 3:46Speaker 1: show with questions from meat eaters for verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and cooking, and there's a prize. Meat eater will donate
- 3:53Speaker 1: five dollars to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing.
- 3:58Speaker 1: A previous game of trivia, we have some house keeping
- 4:00Speaker 1: to get to. We talked about how to find the
- 4:03Speaker 1: star Polaris, which is also known as the North star.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So here's the answer to that question. The North star
- 4:09Speaker 1: is the last star in the handle of the Little Dipper,
- 4:13Speaker 1: or you can find the pointer stars, which are the
- 4:15Speaker 1: outer two stars in the bowl of the Big Dipper.
- 4:19Speaker 1: These two stars are called the pointers because they point
- 4:22Speaker 1: at the star Pilaris. You how to find that? Hey, Spencer,
- 4:27Speaker 1: do you think like, who's who in this room? Is
- 4:31Speaker 1: like the the candidate that you think the dark horse candidate.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Who do you think is gonna win? I think Clay
- 4:38Speaker 1: Nucom Well, that's a given. That's a given. I think
- 4:44Speaker 1: I think this corner over here that the Tony Peterson
- 4:47Speaker 1: and are they the old guys? You just got more wisdom,
- 4:55Speaker 1: So Tony Peterson, I think would would That's a lot
- 4:59Speaker 1: of pressure. Respect to anyone else. Austin is probably pretty tough. Also,
- 5:04Speaker 1: on a previous game of trivia, we had a question
- 5:06Speaker 1: about what fish produces smurf meat. The answer was link cod,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but a few folks wrote in to let me know
- 5:11Speaker 1: that camba zone and green ling also sometimes have blue flesh.
- 5:16Speaker 1: The question, though, was specific to the nickname smurf meat,
- 5:18Speaker 1: which is almost exclusively used to describe b lincod. Now
- 5:22Speaker 1: I understand why there'd be some confusion. And if you
- 5:24Speaker 1: did say the cab is on or the green ling,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I would accept those answers, but no one in our
- 5:29Speaker 1: show did, so it didn't change the outcome of the game.
- 5:33Speaker 1: With that, we are onto meat Eat Trivia, play the drop, Phil, Look,
- 5:38Speaker 1: I need to know what I stay under wind everything,
- 5:42Speaker 1: How's that just tend to win everything. Question one. The
- 5:55Speaker 1: topic is woodsmanship and this will be multiple choice. This
- 5:59Speaker 1: first great question comes to us from John Schlessinger. If
- 6:03Speaker 1: you have a question you think is right for Meat
- 6:04Speaker 1: Eat Trivia, you can send it to trivia at the
- 6:06Speaker 1: meadeater dot com. According to Utah State University, what type
- 6:11Speaker 1: of firewood burns the hottest? Is it box elder mulberry O,
- 6:16Speaker 1: sage orange or white ash? Again, according to Utah State University,
- 6:24Speaker 1: what type of firewood burns the hottest? Is it box
- 6:27Speaker 1: elder mulberry O, sage orange or white ash. We had
- 6:32Speaker 1: some quick answers in the room from It's a good question,
- 6:35Speaker 1: Rick and Clay Hayes. Clay, you were writing before I
- 6:38Speaker 1: even gave the choices. You think you know this one? Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I'm pretty confident, very confident. Again, your choices are box
- 6:45Speaker 1: elder mulberry O sage is You can take cues from
- 6:50Speaker 1: people based on anything they say. That's why when you're
- 6:53Speaker 1: in the court they say, you know, like don't say
- 6:56Speaker 1: a word, don't make eye contact with people. By Clay
- 7:00Speaker 1: just confirmed his confidence gave them confidence confirmed by confidence.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 7:08Speaker 1: We have Thomas saying, oh say Gerange, Jess saying, ash
- 7:12Speaker 1: Ben saying, oh say ge Orange, Tony saying, oh say George,
- 7:16Speaker 1: Sam saying box elder Lydia saying box elder Clay, Newcomb saying,
- 7:20Speaker 1: oh say geornge Clay Hey saying, oh say George. The
- 7:24Speaker 1: correct answer is oh say gerange. Room did pretty well
- 7:29Speaker 1: on the ballard baby, Oh say George burns thirty two
- 7:32Speaker 1: point nine million bt us per cord of wood. Unsurprisingly,
- 7:36Speaker 1: it's also one of the heaviest types of wood in
- 7:39Speaker 1: North America. Other woods that burned nearly as hot as
- 7:42Speaker 1: oh say George include apple beach, black locust, honey locusts,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and white oak. Also makes a fine self bow. I've
- 7:50Speaker 1: had it. I've had a melt like the middle thing
- 7:53Speaker 1: that you put firewood on, like in your in home fireplace,
- 7:57Speaker 1: just freaking took it out. Do you think a lot
- 7:59Speaker 1: of people are burning o sage orange though? No? Do
- 8:04Speaker 1: you know I've got a ton of sae geornge on
- 8:06Speaker 1: my property and it makes incredible fence posts. Get you
- 8:10Speaker 1: through them long Arkansas winners. I don't burn it. I
- 8:13Speaker 1: don't burn it for for for heat. If you're gonna
- 8:15Speaker 1: burn it, you need to burn it sparingly with other
- 8:17Speaker 1: wood because it will melt your fireplace. Question to the
- 8:21Speaker 1: topic is hunting What? Nineteen eighty four video game developed
- 8:26Speaker 1: by Nintendo allows players to shoot ducks, clay pigeons, and
- 8:30Speaker 1: their own hunting dog. Again what? Nineteen eight four video
- 8:36Speaker 1: game developed by Nintendo allows players to shoot ducks, clay pigeons,
- 8:41Speaker 1: and their own hunting dog. Some quick answers in the
- 8:45Speaker 1: room again, Clay nucom did you have a video game
- 8:47Speaker 1: system growing up? Man? There was one in my house,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but I was not a video game I was always
- 8:53Speaker 1: the one that was mad at friends and brothers for
- 8:56Speaker 1: playing all the time. Tony, it feels like it's in
- 8:58Speaker 1: your wheelhouse. You know it? You this one? Does everybody
- 9:01Speaker 1: have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 9:05Speaker 1: have Tom saying big buck hunter, Jets saying I've never
- 9:08Speaker 1: played a video game in my life, outside, Ben saying
- 9:13Speaker 1: duck hunt, Tony saying duck hunt, Sam saying duck hunt.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Lydia without an answer. I was going to say buck hunt,
- 9:19Speaker 1: but yeah, buck hunt. Clay Newcomb says duck hunt, and
- 9:24Speaker 1: Clay Hey says duck Hunter. The correct answer is duck Hunt.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I'm not going to give it to you, Clay Hayes
- 9:33Speaker 1: duck Hunter. It's not with what Clay didn't just kind
- 9:37Speaker 1: of did like that scribble out the end. I had
- 9:41Speaker 1: to erase the er I had it on there, but
- 9:43Speaker 1: I got it. Hey, that's pretty tough Spencer. I mean,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I would be voting to give it to him, but
- 9:49Speaker 1: I don't think we're gonna. I think we gotta keep
- 9:51Speaker 1: with duck Hunt. Duck Hunt sold over twenty eight million
- 9:55Speaker 1: copies worldwide. The game doesn't technically have an ending, but
- 9:59Speaker 1: it does stop. If you beat level you'll advance to
- 10:02Speaker 1: level zero, where the ducks cannot be shot and the
- 10:04Speaker 1: dog laughs at you on a loop. It's described as
- 10:07Speaker 1: a glitched out nightmare that will eventually cause the system
- 10:10Speaker 1: to restart. Wow, fill the engineer, you're are gaming expert here?
- 10:15Speaker 1: Did you ever get into duck Hunt at all? That
- 10:18Speaker 1: was a little before my time, But um, you know
- 10:21Speaker 1: they've sorry more shots. Yeah, I gotta I gotta milk
- 10:26Speaker 1: of while I can. But um, but yeah, I've played
- 10:28Speaker 1: dot com before. Question three The topic is fishing. This
- 10:32Speaker 1: next great question comes to us via Anna go lightly
- 10:35Speaker 1: if you have a question you think is right for
- 10:36Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia at
- 10:39Speaker 1: the meat eat dot com. There are seven gar species
- 10:42Speaker 1: in North America. I need you to name three of them. Again,
- 10:49Speaker 1: there are seven gar species in North America, looking for
- 10:53Speaker 1: you to name three. I think this is going to
- 10:57Speaker 1: be dependent on if you grew up or living gark tree,
- 11:00Speaker 1: which I think a good portion of our room does not.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Where would you describe by guard Country? Idn't mean anything
- 11:07Speaker 1: that's not the Rocky Mountains? Probably this is, this is,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and you got seven to choose from. I'm just looking
- 11:14Speaker 1: for three. Only right down three. If you write down four,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you're gonna get it wrong. I wouldn't say I grew
- 11:21Speaker 1: up in our country, but I shot a whole bunch
- 11:23Speaker 1: of them on the river growing up. That's Guard Country.
- 11:26Speaker 1: That counts all right? Does anybody know that they have
- 11:30Speaker 1: this right? I feel real confident, old man Tony. I
- 11:36Speaker 1: don't think I'm even the oldest one here. Guys, does
- 11:43Speaker 1: everybody have three answers written down? I'm nervous about. Go
- 11:47Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tom saying long
- 11:50Speaker 1: nose alligator, silver just saying guard one, two Guard three,
- 11:56Speaker 1: Ben saying alligator, blue and needle nos. Tony say, short nose,
- 12:00Speaker 1: long nose alligator, Sam saying alligator, Lydia saying alligator and eastern.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Clay Newcomb saying long nose alligator, spotted gar, Clay Hey
- 12:11Speaker 1: saying long nose alligator, snaggletooth. What's that one saying snuggle tooth? Okay,
- 12:19Speaker 1: the seven species are alligator, long nose, short nose, spotted Florida, Tropical,
- 12:26Speaker 1: and Cuban. So we had a couple of people to
- 12:27Speaker 1: get it right Florida. I'm so mad at didn't we do?
- 12:31Speaker 1: We have Tony Peterson and Clay Nucomb got it. I'm
- 12:34Speaker 1: gonna make an argument for the snaggle tooth because unless
- 12:37Speaker 1: we're going with Latin names and pretty much make up
- 12:40Speaker 1: a common name, this is a that snaggle tooth. That's
- 12:42Speaker 1: a very common name in uh Milton, Florida. You hear
- 12:47Speaker 1: people call him snaggletooth gar. Of course, hold on, you
- 12:52Speaker 1: can't just make up nicknames. The largest of the seven
- 12:57Speaker 1: car species is the alligator gar. Although there now only
- 13:00Speaker 1: found in the Deep South in Mexico, their historic range
- 13:04Speaker 1: extends all the way into states like Ohio, Indiana, Illinois,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and Kentucky. They've also been introduced to water bodies in California.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I was at the um Wonders of Wildlife Museum in Springfield,
- 13:16Speaker 1: Missouri a couple of weeks ago, and they have this
- 13:19Speaker 1: like world class aquarium system that you walk through and
- 13:24Speaker 1: you're like in the water. It feels like with and
- 13:26Speaker 1: they have alligator guard. That's I mean, I bet it's
- 13:29Speaker 1: six ft long and you know, ten inch ten inches diameter.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I mean, just they're incredible animals, dinosaurs. Yeah, I would
- 13:37Speaker 1: love for those things to live in like Indiana again,
- 13:39Speaker 1: aligator gar be fun question for the topic is foraging.
- 13:44Speaker 1: What commonly foraged plant was declared the King of vegetables
- 13:49Speaker 1: by King Louis? Again? What commonly foraged plant was declared
- 13:56Speaker 1: the King of vegetables by King Louis the fourteenth. Nobody
- 14:02Speaker 1: knew this one, it appears, so everyone's just gonna be
- 14:03Speaker 1: taking an educated guess. King Louis the fourteen declared commonly
- 14:10Speaker 1: fortaged plant the king of vegetables. As per usual, a
- 14:15Speaker 1: straight guess? Is anybody confident they got this one? M good,
- 14:23Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have tom is
- 14:25Speaker 1: saying asparagus, Just saying asparagus, Ben saying mushrooms, Tony saying asparagus,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Sam so Old saying wild onion, Lydia saying radish, Clay
- 14:35Speaker 1: Nucomb saying mushrooms. Clay hayes without an answer. The correct
- 14:40Speaker 1: answer vegetable a mushroom. Yeah, probably know. We don't know
- 14:45Speaker 1: what King Louis knew. The correct answer is asparagus. Got it,
- 14:52Speaker 1: stinky pas. The French brought the first asparagus to America
- 14:56Speaker 1: sometime around the sixteen fifties. It escaped cultivation in here
- 15:00Speaker 1: sometime in the early eighteen hundreds and became commercially grown
- 15:03Speaker 1: in the eighteen sixties. Hm. King Louis love that stuff.
- 15:08Speaker 1: There's even a rumor that he had an asparagus fleet
- 15:11Speaker 1: that he would send out like around Europe to just
- 15:14Speaker 1: find him asparagus. Wow, that's how much he liked it,
- 15:18Speaker 1: The King of Vegetables, Clay, You got an asparagus growing
- 15:21Speaker 1: at home? Yeah, we do. Misty grows asparagus, she does.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It's a quirky little plant, but it's good. We just
- 15:27Speaker 1: pick it off up off the side of the road
- 15:29Speaker 1: where I live. Borrow ditches and wyoming asparagus. Some hot
- 15:34Speaker 1: tips here for foraging. It's the fast, that's what I got. Hey,
- 15:37Speaker 1: I didn't realize that it could be forged, wildly forged.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I didn't know that. This is news to me. Where
- 15:43Speaker 1: you think it came from? I don't know, man, Where
- 15:46Speaker 1: does everything come from? Grocery store? Wild? It was the
- 15:49Speaker 1: base of an asparagus called where it grows out? Is
- 15:51Speaker 1: that a crown? Crown? Is that why called the crown?
- 15:56Speaker 1: I doubt it, but I like it all right. Question
- 15:59Speaker 1: five will get a scoreboard update from Phil after this.
- 16:02Speaker 1: The topic is gear. What do you call the measurement
- 16:05Speaker 1: that's taken between a bowstring and the deepest part of
- 16:09Speaker 1: the grip? Again, what do you call the measurement that's
- 16:15Speaker 1: taken between a bowstring and the deepest part of the grip.
- 16:21Speaker 1: A few folks knew this one right off the bat.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Still have some people thinking. Again, it's the measurement that's
- 16:29Speaker 1: taken between a bowstring and the deepest part of the grip.
- 16:34Speaker 1: The Clays look like they know it, both of you.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I looked at his Arkansas the answer right off him.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Tony Peterson knew it. Ben looks like he knew it.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I'm second guessing big time. Now does everybody have an answer?
- 16:51Speaker 1: I just drew something. Drop might work. Go ahead and
- 16:56Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Thomas without an answer, Jess
- 16:59Speaker 1: saying draw length, Ben saying brace height, Tony saying brace heights,
- 17:04Speaker 1: Sam saying brace height, Lydia without an answer, and the
- 17:07Speaker 1: Clay saying brace height. They got it. The answer is
- 17:11Speaker 1: brace site. So my argument here is is that not
- 17:14Speaker 1: also at full draw a measurement from bowstring to middle. No. No,
- 17:21Speaker 1: that's what I second guessed on when I heard the
- 17:24Speaker 1: question reread. But in Jenny, this is where if you
- 17:26Speaker 1: were Steve or Brody, you throw hold on a minute
- 17:31Speaker 1: and Spencer is good. He doesn't usually bend. In general,
- 17:37Speaker 1: the shorter the brace height, the faster the bow, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: the less forgiving it is. But the longer the brace height,
- 17:43Speaker 1: the slower the bow, and the more forgiving it is.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Most long bows and recurves have a brace site around
- 17:48Speaker 1: eight inches, while most flagship compounds are typically closer to six.
- 17:53Speaker 1: We are halfway through the game of trivia. Fill the
- 17:56Speaker 1: engineer give us a scoreboard update. We'll do yet to
- 18:00Speaker 1: make it appearance on the board. Zero points. We have
- 18:02Speaker 1: Lydia with one point, Jess with two points apiece. We
- 18:07Speaker 1: have Clay h Sam and Thomas, and then Ben has
- 18:12Speaker 1: three points. Clay Newcomb has four points and in first place.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I'm not going to call him old man because he seems.
- 18:19Speaker 1: We have Tony Peterson with five pitching a perfect game. Tony,
- 18:23Speaker 1: the pressure is on, well done. How certain are you
- 18:26Speaker 1: that score? I thought me and Tony were tired. You
- 18:30Speaker 1: got asparagus and I didn't, But you missed one that
- 18:32Speaker 1: I got. Do you take? He doesn't miss? Okay, not
- 18:39Speaker 1: like Kenyan. Sorry I couldn't have Question six. The topic
- 18:54Speaker 1: is turkeys. This next great question comes to is via
- 18:57Speaker 1: Jacob Collins. If you have a question you think is
- 19:00Speaker 1: it for meat Eat Trivia, You can send it to
- 19:02Speaker 1: trivia at the meat Eator dot com. Michael Vick is
- 19:06Speaker 1: this college's most famous alumni whose mascot is a male turkey.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Michael Vick is this college's most famous alumni whose mascot
- 19:18Speaker 1: is a male turkey. Famous or infamous, either one both apply.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Nobody knew this one right off the bat. Again, we're
- 19:27Speaker 1: looking for where Michael Vick went to college because their
- 19:30Speaker 1: mascot is a male turkey. I don't even know who
- 19:34Speaker 1: Michael Vick is. That's not gonna help you very much then,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and I still don't have it. That is their hint.
- 19:45Speaker 1: A male turkey, a male tour must be an obscure college.
- 19:50Speaker 1: What region of the country is it in? Not giving
- 19:54Speaker 1: any hints. Their mascot, though, is a male turkey Clay?
- 20:01Speaker 1: You know any colleges? I mean, I'm trying to even
- 20:03Speaker 1: just guess. I don't even have an educated guess. Does
- 20:07Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? Who's gonna come up with one?
- 20:09Speaker 1: This might break the perfect game. Go ahead and reveal
- 20:13Speaker 1: your answers. We have Tom is saying Scranton just without
- 20:16Speaker 1: an answer, Ben saying West Virginia, Tony saying Auburn, Sam
- 20:21Speaker 1: saying what's that? Say? University Lydia without an answer, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: the Clays without an answer. That was a rough one.
- 20:29Speaker 1: The answer is Virginia Tech was in the wrong Virginia.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Virginia Tech's current mascot is the Hokey, but they used
- 20:37Speaker 1: to be known as the Gobblers. In the early nineteen
- 20:40Speaker 1: hundreds of the university actually had a live Tom Turkey
- 20:43Speaker 1: as its mascot. It was trained to gobble on command,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and it once got in a fight with another team's bulldog.
- 20:49Speaker 1: What's the command that makes it goggle like a card
- 20:52Speaker 1: or slamming or something like yeah, yeah, exactly and command
- 20:57Speaker 1: yeah trained, best trained. So now now they're the hokeys,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but their mascot that they have on the sidelines is
- 21:04Speaker 1: still a big male turkey. Question seven. The topic is
- 21:09Speaker 1: Public Lands, America's largest Native American reservation, consists of sixteen
- 21:14Speaker 1: million acres that are spread across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
- 21:19Speaker 1: What is it get any? Topic is public Lands, America's
- 21:25Speaker 1: largest Native American reservation consists of sixteen million acres that
- 21:29Speaker 1: are spread across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. What is it?
- 21:36Speaker 1: Is this gonna get you on the board? Jess get
- 21:38Speaker 1: a quick answer? It seemed like it's a quick guest.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 21:47Speaker 1: We have Tom saying Cherokee, Jess saying Navajo, Ben saying Navajo,
- 21:51Speaker 1: Tony saying Apache, Sam without an answer, Lydia, Lydia saying Navajo,
- 21:56Speaker 1: Newcomb saying Navajo Nation, and hey, he's saying Navaho. The
- 22:00Speaker 1: correct answer is the Navajo Nation reservation. If you just said, Navajo,
- 22:04Speaker 1: I'll give it to you. So the room did pretty well.
- 22:09Speaker 1: We're tided. Okay, let's look at them. So when I
- 22:13Speaker 1: and so the last multiple many years we've been at these,
- 22:17Speaker 1: my son plays basketball, and the biggest pet peeve of
- 22:21Speaker 1: my life is like peewee basketball scorekeepers, Like I watched
- 22:27Speaker 1: them game because they get it wrong. I mean it's
- 22:31Speaker 1: like we just scored three points and you gave it
- 22:34Speaker 1: to the other team, Like I am untrustworthy of scorekeepers,
- 22:38Speaker 1: Like I watch NBA games and I'm like watching they
- 22:42Speaker 1: like score and I'm like watching the TV like they
- 22:44Speaker 1: didn't give him the point and then bang it pops up,
- 22:46Speaker 1: like okay they did. Now, what does this have to
- 22:49Speaker 1: do with the I'm tired you not? The Navajo Nation
- 22:55Speaker 1: is four times larger than the next biggest reservation. It's
- 22:58Speaker 1: total acreage is even big than ten US states, and
- 23:01Speaker 1: unlike most reservations, it's actually grown significantly over the last
- 23:05Speaker 1: one fifty years. Question eight will get another scoreboard update
- 23:10Speaker 1: after this. The topic is cooking. The five basic tastes
- 23:15Speaker 1: of food are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and blank. Getting
- 23:23Speaker 1: The five basic tastes of food are sweet, sour, salty, bitter,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and blank looking for the fifth basic taste? Can you
- 23:37Speaker 1: read those again? Why is this so confusing? Here are
- 23:41Speaker 1: four of the five basic tastes sweet, sour, salty, bitter,
- 23:46Speaker 1: So I'm looking for the fifth one. Quick answers, some
- 23:51Speaker 1: non answers so far I'm second guessing mine. Now, I
- 23:58Speaker 1: was real confident for about two seconds that it does.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Everybody have an answer, Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 24:07Speaker 1: We have Tom saying o mommy, Jess saying acid, Ben
- 24:11Speaker 1: saying bland, Tony saying spicy, Sam saying spicy, Lydia saying savory,
- 24:17Speaker 1: Nwcom saying savory, and Hayes saying what's that? Say? Good? Good,
- 24:23Speaker 1: good good. The correct answer is savory or umammy thing here?
- 24:33Speaker 1: What flavor is savory? Well here it is. Foods that
- 24:36Speaker 1: are said to have a savory or umami flavor include seafood,
- 24:40Speaker 1: red meat, aged cheese, seaweed, soy food, mushrooms, tomatoes, kim chi,
- 24:47Speaker 1: and green tea. But in a Ted talk, Dr Nicole
- 24:51Speaker 1: gar Now argued that there could actually be a sixth
- 24:54Speaker 1: basic flavor, which would be fat so savory or mommy
- 24:58Speaker 1: is things like mushrooms Clay, where would spicy fit in?
- 25:01Speaker 1: I thought that was a good answer, Tony. I mean
- 25:04Speaker 1: it's it's kind of cool. Steve Ronella if he's if
- 25:11Speaker 1: he's winning, he's really courteous to think about it. I
- 25:16Speaker 1: actually think I know this one is a lot of spicy.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Isn't a flavor. It's a lot of things can be
- 25:21Speaker 1: sweet and spicy or savory and spicy. Yeah, so I
- 25:24Speaker 1: don't think spicy is more of a type of whatever
- 25:28Speaker 1: answer to nobody. Nobody asked you are sweet? So our salty,
- 25:37Speaker 1: bitter and savory or mommy Phil give us a scoreboard update.
- 25:41Speaker 1: We have two questions left. That's right, everyone's on the
- 25:44Speaker 1: board now, which is great congratulations, but they're only three
- 25:47Speaker 1: players left in the game. We have been with four points,
- 25:50Speaker 1: Tony Peterson with five and in first place. As he
- 25:53Speaker 1: just reminded us, Clean Nucombe with six. Question nine, the
- 25:58Speaker 1: topic is wildlife. This is our listener Question of the Week,
- 26:02Speaker 1: which was won by Colton Sagastad for sending this great question.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Colton is going to get a one hundred dollar first
- 26:08Speaker 1: Like gift card. If you want a chance to win
- 26:10Speaker 1: our Listener Question of the Week, you can send your
- 26:12Speaker 1: question to trivia at the metro dot com. Born between
- 26:16Speaker 1: March and May, the babies from this mammal are often
- 26:20Speaker 1: referred to as red dogs. Just born between March and May,
- 26:27Speaker 1: the babies from this mammal are often referred to as
- 26:31Speaker 1: red dogs. Jess knew this one right away, but the
- 26:36Speaker 1: rest of the room not as fast. Clay, how you
- 26:40Speaker 1: feeling about this? Just guess? Tony Peterson, how you feel
- 26:44Speaker 1: about this? Not good? Jess's certainty helped me. Okay, gave
- 26:50Speaker 1: something away. Who else is in the game? We have Clay, An, Tony,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and who man? How you feel about this one? I
- 26:56Speaker 1: feel very confident in my complete guests, everybody have an answer.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tom saying fox,
- 27:05Speaker 1: Jets saying bison, Ben saying beavers, Tony saying otters, Sam
- 27:11Speaker 1: without an answer, Lydia saying some mammal born naked, Nukerom
- 27:16Speaker 1: saying prairie dog, and Heyes saying squirrel. The correct answer
- 27:20Speaker 1: is bison. Just red dogs get their name from their
- 27:26Speaker 1: orangish red color and size. The moniker no longer applies
- 27:30Speaker 1: after a few months, because that's when their hair starts
- 27:33Speaker 1: to change to a dark brown and their characteristic shoulder
- 27:36Speaker 1: hump and horns begin to grow. I just want to
- 27:38Speaker 1: say I didn't give so much away, did I? Well,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I just thought Wyoming prairie dog. That's what I thought. Wrong.
- 27:47Speaker 1: If we're playing poker, you would have one. We are
- 27:49Speaker 1: onto our last question. Give us a scoreboard update, Phil,
- 27:52Speaker 1: I don't think anything changed, did it? Uh? Nothing changed,
- 27:55Speaker 1: but Ben has lost his opportunity to catch up. Let's
- 27:58Speaker 1: do two point final questions. It's between Tony and Clay,
- 28:02Speaker 1: who have five and six points respectively to the last question.
- 28:08Speaker 1: The topic is fishing, and I don't think this either
- 28:10Speaker 1: one of the last question. This is the final question.
- 28:13Speaker 1: So if he gets it wrong and I get wrong,
- 28:15Speaker 1: I still win. That's right, that's how that works. I'm
- 28:17Speaker 1: playing for a tie. No, I don't think either one
- 28:19Speaker 1: of you have an advantage here though. Name two of
- 28:23Speaker 1: the top five states with the most shark attacks. Again,
- 28:29Speaker 1: I am looking for two of the top five states
- 28:33Speaker 1: for the most shark attacks, and this is looking at
- 28:35Speaker 1: data taking over the last decade. Two of the top
- 28:40Speaker 1: five states. NUKEM. How you feeling you know? Fair Tony? Uh,
- 28:49Speaker 1: I'll echo that sentiment. I don't I don't feel that
- 28:51Speaker 1: great about this. I mean, I like these. When it's
- 28:54Speaker 1: like give give some of the top five. You can
- 28:57Speaker 1: use some reasoning skills sometimes. Does everybody have an answer
- 29:02Speaker 1: looking for two states? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 29:05Speaker 1: We have Tom saying Florida in North Carolina, Jess saying
- 29:09Speaker 1: California and Florida, Ben saying South Carolina and Florida, Tony
- 29:13Speaker 1: saying Florida and South Carolina, Sam saying Hawaii and Florida,
- 29:17Speaker 1: Lydia saying Hawaii and Florida. Newcom saying California and Florida.
- 29:22Speaker 1: In Hay saying California and Florida. The top five are Florida, Hawaii,
- 29:28Speaker 1: South Carolina, North Carolina, and California. And then everybody got it.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Well done. Sam and I were the best on that
- 29:37Speaker 1: one there because we got the first two answers. Florida
- 29:40Speaker 1: overwhelmingly leads the nation in shark attacks, with two hundred
- 29:44Speaker 1: thirty six in the last decade. The next closest is
- 29:47Speaker 1: Hawaii with seventy three, South Carolina with forty three, North
- 29:51Speaker 1: Carolina with thirty two, in California with twenty nine. Sharks
- 29:54Speaker 1: kill one person in America each year, which is half
- 29:57Speaker 1: as many people who die because they vending machine falls
- 30:00Speaker 1: on them. I know which one is more likely to
- 30:03Speaker 1: happen to me. Clay Nucombe is our winner. How many
- 30:09Speaker 1: get seven? Seven? Well done Clay, good performance by everybody.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I'm still contesting the mushroom vegetable connection. I just yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 1: it was it wasn't the best answer. Now what happens
- 30:24Speaker 1: next is Clay as the winner, gets to choose where
- 30:27Speaker 1: the five dollar donation goes. So what's it gonna be?
- 30:30Speaker 1: I'm going How for Wildlife? What do you like so
- 30:33Speaker 1: much about that? Man? I think those guys have given
- 30:36Speaker 1: a it's it's not the full solution, but they've put
- 30:41Speaker 1: a a good solution to influencing legislation anti hunting legislation
- 30:48Speaker 1: all over the country. They do a good job of
- 30:50Speaker 1: rallying people to get emails into important people's inboxes, and
- 30:56Speaker 1: we've seen that work and it is one of the
- 30:58Speaker 1: most it's you know, it's I think it's such a
- 31:01Speaker 1: complex answer for how to combat anti hunting legislation in
- 31:06Speaker 1: this country, but How for wild Life's taken a good
- 31:08Speaker 1: swing at it. I like them, jess As somebody who
- 31:10Speaker 1: traffics in that space you agree, you like how yes,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I say yes, and because this is what how does where?
- 31:20Speaker 1: I actually do think that you have to do more
- 31:22Speaker 1: than just the howl and UM. As a lobbyist, I
- 31:26Speaker 1: very rarely ever see petitions ever actually work, UM if
- 31:29Speaker 1: they're not like accompanied by real life stories from people
- 31:34Speaker 1: that are on the ground. So a lot of legislators
- 31:36Speaker 1: will get these big petitions in their inbox. Wh they'll
- 31:39Speaker 1: get seven emails saying all the same thing, and that
- 31:43Speaker 1: all goes into one folder and then it goes into
- 31:45Speaker 1: the trash can. But the email that they get that
- 31:48Speaker 1: has a subject line that says please vote no because
- 31:51Speaker 1: and you put the subject line you say vote no
- 31:53Speaker 1: on House Bill forty three or whatever it is. And
- 31:55Speaker 1: then in your piece you give a two or three sentence.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Don't write a whole book, but two or three sentences.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I'm a local, I'm your constituent. I care very deeply
- 32:05Speaker 1: that ship changes votes. So what do you do if
- 32:08Speaker 1: you're not a part of the state and you can't
- 32:10Speaker 1: write that email? I mean that's where how is good?
- 32:12Speaker 1: If you're not a part of the state. It's good
- 32:14Speaker 1: that they see that there's a lot of eyes on
- 32:16Speaker 1: them from outside I was fighting a bill this last
- 32:19Speaker 1: year that had seven and fifty emails in each of
- 32:22Speaker 1: their inboxes. It didn't change anything until twelve people physically
- 32:29Speaker 1: showed up and talked, and we still lost it. But
- 32:31Speaker 1: they weren't listening until people showed up in person. Hunters
- 32:35Speaker 1: need to get your asses to the Capitol and be
- 32:37Speaker 1: there in person. So how does a good job, But
- 32:40Speaker 1: it's not the whole job. Yeah, it does a great
- 32:42Speaker 1: job getting the information out there. Fantastic job. Yeah, that's
- 32:46Speaker 1: our end of the game of trivia. But I'm so
- 32:50Speaker 1: stoked on like the first light store here, I don't
- 32:52Speaker 1: think I did a good enough job last episode of
- 32:54Speaker 1: talking about how cool is so as our guests throw
- 32:57Speaker 1: some superlatives around about what you like about the place,
- 33:00Speaker 1: how need it is, why you'd swing in if you
- 33:02Speaker 1: were within like an hour here, I'd come up and
- 33:04Speaker 1: see this place. I like the feel of it. Just
- 33:06Speaker 1: as soon as you walk in there's a wall tent
- 33:08Speaker 1: set up. I mean, it's just that's a cool building.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Nice vibes. Yeah, I feel like the decorations definitely resonate
- 33:16Speaker 1: with you a lot more like versus regular shops you're around,
- 33:19Speaker 1: you're looking at things that you do and that you wear.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And it's pretty sweet in my opinion. Great color is
- 33:24Speaker 1: great setup, it's organized, it's awesome. I think just the
- 33:28Speaker 1: advantage of having every piece here to be able to
- 33:30Speaker 1: touch and feel and try on is is a big win.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It's pretty very cool store, especially for the women out
- 33:36Speaker 1: there that are looking to see how things fit. Like
- 33:39Speaker 1: this is pretty cool? Is it? Is? It? Literally every
- 33:42Speaker 1: piece like it's everything that is sold by First Lights
- 33:45Speaker 1: in here. That's awesome. I didn't think you'd be able
- 33:48Speaker 1: to fit at all. He has done it. Yeah, it's
- 33:51Speaker 1: one thing to look at it all on a website,
- 33:53Speaker 1: but then when you can actually walk around and feel
- 33:54Speaker 1: the fabrics and stuff, I have a feeling a lot
- 33:56Speaker 1: of people are gonna get a lot of value out
- 33:58Speaker 1: of that well done so that it will be open
- 34:00Speaker 1: by the time you hear this episode. And that's it
- 34:03Speaker 1: for me. Eat Trivia, the only game show where conservation
- 34:06Speaker 1: always wins.
