• 0:55
Speaker 2: And as you know, he's been on vacation for the
• 0:58
Speaker 2: last couple of days. Let's hope he's not up listening.
• 1:01
Speaker 2: But we're going to carry on without him and have
• 1:05
Speaker 2: a really good show. We have got some good people on.
• 1:07
Speaker 2: You know, it's Wednesday morning. That means Millie Snyder is
• 1:10
Speaker 2: on to talk about the Mediterranean lifestyle. We'll get to
• 1:14
Speaker 2: that in a moment. We're also going to talk some
• 1:18

Speaker 2: pull when the gentleman Barbie come along. I'm going to
• 1:24
Speaker 2: talk about also what some opportunities might be beyond the recreation,

Speaker 2: we'll tell you what we're looking for and what we

Speaker 2: and also support the Appalachian Outlaw Trail. And it's also
• 1:44
Speaker 2: Memorial Day weekend coming up and they are having some
• 1:48
Speaker 2: fun things taking place. And then a little later we're
• 1:50
Speaker 2: going to talk about apprenticeships. That's one of my favorite
• 1:52
Speaker 2: things because we are teaching skills. The unions are teaching
• 1:57
Speaker 2: skills and paying people at the same time and also
• 2:00
Speaker 2: helping to keep them on the right track. So that's
• 2:04
Speaker 2: what's coming up. So you want to stick around, you
• 2:06
Speaker 2: can call us a guarant on the Guarantee Bank hotline

Speaker 2: or Tony the Taylor Text at three zero four nine
• 2:18
Speaker 2: three five five zero zero eight. And Stephanie Paully is
• 2:23
Speaker 2: the producer and keeping us on. And also my buddy
• 2:27
Speaker 2: Ryan Nicholson, whose dry humor is the driest in all
• 2:33
Speaker 2: of the state of West Virginia, and he's really funny.
• 2:37
Speaker 2: You just got to keep up with him. And again,
• 2:40
Speaker 2: I'm Natalie Tennant, as I said, and so let's just
• 2:44
Speaker 2: get to it. If you have calls, if you have
• 2:45
Speaker 2: text please send them along because we are now talking
• 2:49
Speaker 2: to an old friend, and I know you're here all
• 2:51
Speaker 2: the time, and you and Dave. And when Dave said, oh,
• 2:55
Speaker 2: you're gonna have to have You're gonna have to interview
• 2:56
Speaker 2: Millie Snyder. She comes every Wednesday, I'm like, really, we
• 3:00
Speaker 2: go way way back about nineteen ninety.
• 3:04
Speaker 3: It was yeah, No, I think yes. I think it was.
• 3:07
Speaker 2: Because I was the Mountaineer, Yeah, and you were want
• 3:11
  Speaker 2: of it Beck.
• 3:12
Speaker 3: And the thought that one of you dressed up like that,
• 3:16
Speaker 3: how could I get.
• 3:17
Speaker 2: It's called it outfit and you have to be a
• 3:19
Speaker 2: student of West Virginia University and try out to be
• 3:21
Speaker 2: the Mountaineer mascot, And that's kind of what it was.
• 3:24
Speaker 2: It was like this this women's event or something, and
• 3:31
Speaker 2: you were you were a woman owned business and one
• 3:34
Speaker 2: of few, especially nineteen ninety, but you started even before that.
• 3:38
Speaker 3: Yes, I came to Charleston, West Virginia in nineteen sixty nine,
• 3:42
Speaker 3: which was just after the covered wagons moved exactly seemingly
• 3:48
Speaker 3: because it was such a long time ago. And when
• 3:50
Speaker 3: I told my family in Baltimore that I'm coming to
• 3:53
Speaker 3: West Virginia, they thought I sent the planet Mars and
• 3:57
Speaker 3: they well, they never came here, and then they came
• 4:01
Speaker 3: to visit, and I was afraid they weren't going to
• 4:03
Speaker 3: leave because they loved it here. And so it was
• 4:07
Speaker 3: a love story for me because they were happy that
• 4:11
Speaker 3: I was here. But I cannot put into enough words,
• 4:15
Speaker 3: however time, however much time there is to say it,
• 4:19
Speaker 3: how grateful I am to be a mountaineer, right to
• 4:22
Speaker 3: be here, and to have had the opportunity to help
• 4:26
Speaker 3: people in the way that I have, which is simply
• 4:29
Speaker 3: to show them what they are capable of doing. You see,
• 4:32
Speaker 3: I can never lose anybody's weight. I have to help
• 4:35
Speaker 3: you lose it. But it's about education and knowing that
• 4:40
Speaker 3: you're important enough to eat in a healthy way and
• 4:43
Speaker 3: after weight watchers. And I only did that for forty
• 4:46
Speaker 3: seven years because I started all of this when I
• 4:49
Speaker 3: was I think four, Yes, because.
• 4:52
Speaker 2: At eighty oh, how old are you now?
• 4:54
Speaker 3: Well, I'm eighty three, and I know I don't look it, no,
• 4:57
  Speaker 3: and I don't act it, and I don't feel it,
• 4:59
Speaker 3: and I'm very great for that. But it's also a
• 5:01
Speaker 3: part of the way that I've been eating for so
• 5:04
Speaker 3: many years, because eating healthy has many many benefits. My
• 5:09
Speaker 3: family didn't have all that good health. My father died
• 5:12
Speaker 3: when he was young, My brother died when he was young.
• 5:15
Speaker 3: My mother did make it to ninety three, but my
• 5:18
Speaker 3: mother was She was very unconventional in that she walked
• 5:21
Speaker 3: everywhere that she had to go. Because my husband at
• 5:25
Speaker 3: the time tried to teach her how to drive, and
• 5:28
Speaker 3: when he came into the house and all the blood
• 5:30
Speaker 3: drained out of his face, he said, I can't do it. Really,
• 5:33
Speaker 3: I can't do it. So my mother walked everywhere, and
• 5:36
Speaker 3: that was very unconventional back then, right, And so she
• 5:41
Speaker 3: made it to ninety three years and it was pretty remarkable.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: She lived in Baltimore all that time.
• 5:46
Speaker 3: Oh yes, But the last four and a half months
• 5:48
Speaker 3: of her life, I kind of kidnapped her, didn't kind of.
• 5:51
Speaker 3: I kidnapped her from the nursing home that my sister
• 5:54
Speaker 3: put her in, and I brought her to Charleston, and
• 5:58
Speaker 3: she finished her remaining years in my care at my home.
• 6:02
Speaker 3: Wow and the dogs, and she would just sit outside
• 6:07
Speaker 3: with the dogs and she would speak Yiddish to them,
• 6:10
Speaker 3: and she knew that the dogs understood her. They didn't
• 6:13
Speaker 3: understand her, but they acted like they did because it
• 6:16
Speaker 3: was a lot, I think so it was a little
• 6:19
Speaker 3: bit of a love affair in so many different directions.
• 6:22
Speaker 2: That's just a great story, it is. Why did you
• 6:26
Speaker 2: choose West Virginia? Was it you or your husband that
• 6:29
Speaker 2: said we're going to Charleston.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: Well, we were on the way to Columbus to visit
• 6:34
Speaker 3: some of Harvey's friends with whom he was in the army,
• 6:37
Speaker 3: and the Automobile Club routed us across Virginia because we
• 6:41
Speaker 3: were working for a weight watcher franchisee in Virginia.
• 6:45
Speaker 2: Okay, so we know that you were clear. So when
• 6:47
Speaker 2: did you start weight walking? Not start? When did you
• 6:50
Speaker 2: become working for weight Watchers even before nineteen Oh?
• 6:53
Speaker 3: Well yes, well see I joined as a member in
• 6:56
Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six. But I didn't want to join weight
• 6:58
Speaker 3: Watchers because I did want to fail again. I had
• 7:02
Speaker 3: been failing at weight loss all my life, and so
• 7:05
Speaker 3: when it was my older sister who insisted that I
• 7:08
Speaker 3: go with her, I'm not going to share with you
• 7:11
Speaker 3: the words that transpired between us. They were ugly, they
• 7:14
Speaker 3: were unkind. But Harriet was the chief name caller in
• 7:18
Speaker 3: my life, and none of those words were kind. And
• 7:22
Speaker 3: perhaps she thought that if she could insult me enough
• 7:25
Speaker 3: that would spur me into action. And what it did,
• 7:28
Speaker 3: it spurred me into getting to the refrigerator faster because
• 7:31
Speaker 3: I needed the food and I needed to be I
• 7:35
Speaker 3: wanted all the bad things to be silent. So food
• 7:38
Speaker 3: did that for me. So when it was her idea
• 7:40
Speaker 3: that I joined weight watchers, I said, I'm not going
• 7:43
Speaker 3: to your watcher's weight or whatever you call it, and
• 7:45
Speaker 3: I didn't go. Try to make the story short. And
• 7:49
Speaker 3: around that time, I was dating this guy named Harvey
• 7:53
Speaker 3: and he had a weight problem, and we went out
• 7:56
Speaker 3: to eat a lot, and we went to places that
• 7:59
Speaker 3: served a lot of food, always the two for one.
• 8:02
Speaker 3: And that didn't mean we split it. He had two
• 8:04
Speaker 3: for one and I had two for one. We just
• 8:07
Speaker 3: we just got a lot more food for less money.
• 8:09
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 8:09
Speaker 2: And love will do that to you too, won't it.
• 8:11
Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, it blinds everything. Yes. And so one
• 8:16
Speaker 3: particular night on a Sunday, we always went to Little
• 8:19
  Speaker 3: Italy in Baltimore.
• 8:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, And he said.
• 8:21
Speaker 3: To me, any and Harvey had a wonderful singing voice.
• 8:24
Speaker 3: It was just like it was magic. And I met
• 8:27
Speaker 3: him at a singing teachers And that's another story altogether.
• 8:30
Speaker 3: And I have podcasts that are coming out that are
• 8:32
Speaker 3: going to tell this whole story. Oh really, but Harvey
• 8:35
Speaker 3: said to me. You know, in choir practice, I was
• 8:37
Speaker 3: short wended, and here was my opening. I said, Harvey,
• 8:40
Speaker 3: you know you're fat. You need to I don't wait
• 8:43
Speaker 3: a minute, I don't say that to anybody.
• 8:45
Speaker 2: Well wait a minute, why did you say that if
• 8:47
Speaker 2: your sister said mean things to you and that didn't
• 8:51
  Speaker 2: Because I.
• 8:52
Speaker 3: Had an ulterior motive, And here it comes. I told
• 8:55
Speaker 3: him that he needs to go to weight watchers because
• 8:58
Speaker 3: he's going to go and he's going to find out
• 9:01
Speaker 3: that it doesn't work. So then with that ammunition, I'm
• 9:04
Speaker 3: going to tell Harriet where she can put the next
• 9:07
Speaker 3: suggestion to join what something? That's I mean, it was
• 9:12
  Speaker 3: all in.
• 9:13
Speaker 2: My oh and what happened? Harriet was right all along, wasn't.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: She Well, we're not going to go there.
• 9:18
  Speaker 5: See.
• 9:18
Speaker 2: Did you guys yell at each other in Yiddish?
• 9:21
Speaker 3: You ever use sometimes?
• 9:22
  Speaker 4: Oh?
• 9:22
Speaker 2: Yes, okay, yeah, yeah, okay.
• 9:25
Speaker 3: So I would call her as sugar enough and a
• 9:29
Speaker 3: sugar that means you're a crazy person, and other words
• 9:32
Speaker 3: that I don't think should be said on the air because.
• 9:35
Speaker 2: Somebody will producers we have seven second delay? Do we?
• 9:39
  Speaker 2: I think they?
• 9:40
  Speaker 4: Oh?
• 9:41
Speaker 2: H they don't. They should have for me, I'm going,
• 9:44
  Speaker 2: I'm coming into.
• 9:45
Speaker 3: Harvey promised me that he would go, but it took
• 9:48
Speaker 3: him nine weeks to actually go because in those years
• 9:51
Speaker 3: Wait Watchers only had one nighttime meeting in Baltimore, and
• 9:55
Speaker 3: I worked on Thursday night. I mean, I could have
• 9:57
Speaker 3: asked for the night off, but why do they do that?
• 10:00
Speaker 3: That's why would I do that? That doesn't make sense.
• 10:01
Speaker 3: So eight for nine weeks, he put it off, put
• 10:04
Speaker 3: it off, put it off, And finally on September first,
• 10:07
Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six. You know that the date is emblazoned
• 10:10
Speaker 3: in my brain. And he didn't call me to cancel.
• 10:13
Speaker 3: And I said to myself, I wonder if he's going
• 10:15
Speaker 3: to go to that thing tonight by himself. Now he's
• 10:17
Speaker 3: not with you. You still weren't going imbut going. He's
• 10:21
Speaker 3: got to go and find out it's a joke. It
• 10:23
Speaker 3: doesn't work, because I'm not gonna fail again. If God
• 10:27
Speaker 3: wanted me to be thin, God made me thin.
• 10:30
Speaker 2: You know, and there are folks listening because I want
• 10:32
Speaker 2: to get to that too. So if if you want
• 10:34
Speaker 2: to call in and ask some questions those who know
• 10:36
Speaker 2: about weight watchers too, because Millie knows that for forty
• 10:42
Speaker 2: seven year or longer it's been a success. The phone
• 10:44
Speaker 2: number is the Guaranteed Bank hotline at three zero four
• 10:48
Speaker 2: three four five five eight five eights. Because that's what
• 10:51
Speaker 2: made weight watchers such as success too, not just the
• 10:55
Speaker 2: programs of how to take care of yourself, but that
• 10:59
Speaker 2: inspiration that you come back. Certainly, Harriet probably wasn't the
• 11:02
Speaker 2: leader of it when she's going around being saying mean
• 11:05
Speaker 2: names to people, right.
• 11:07
Speaker 3: But she said it to everybody about something. If you
• 11:09
Speaker 3: didn't do what she wanted, if you didn't march to
• 11:11
Speaker 3: her her step. Yeah, she she had a few choice
• 11:14
  Speaker 3: words and phrase.
• 11:15
  Speaker 2: She's still around.
• 11:16
Speaker 3: No, Harriet sadly lost her battle to pancreatic cancer in
• 11:20
Speaker 3: twenty fifteen. And although we had a very very difficult relationship,
• 11:26
Speaker 3: I sometimes still think how not sometimes, but it just
• 11:30
Speaker 3: lives in my brain. I'm sad that she suffered so
• 11:34
Speaker 3: to get to her end because pancreatic cancer is pretty
• 11:38
Speaker 3: pretty vicious. Now there's some research that's coming that says
• 11:43
Speaker 3: it could possibly work, but it's after Harriet's time. So
• 11:48
Speaker 3: although there was a lot of ugly stuff between us.
• 11:51
Speaker 3: I never wished her ill in that respect, but I
• 11:54
Speaker 3: don't know whether what her words are Harriet put Harriet
• 11:57
Speaker 3: took me to my first bariatric doctor for appills when
• 12:00
Speaker 3: I was eleven. Nobody does that to a child, but
• 12:05
Speaker 3: Harriet did it to me because I wasn't acceptable. I
• 12:08
  Speaker 3: wasn't I was fat, I was useless. I would never
• 12:12
  Speaker 3: amount to anything.
• 12:13
Speaker 2: There were bariatric doctors when you were Oh absolutely, my goodness,
• 12:17
Speaker 2: and you were you How much older is she than you?
• 12:19
Speaker 3: She was thirteen years older, Dan, She was born nineteen
• 12:23
  Speaker 3: twenty nine.
• 12:24
Speaker 2: So she was twenty four, telling you the eleven year old, right, yeah,
• 12:29
Speaker 2: well eleven plus was twenty four, thirteen years older than they.
• 12:34
Speaker 2: So she's twenty four, you're eleven, and she's telling like
• 12:38
  Speaker 2: she's an adult.
• 12:39
  Speaker 3: Well that's abroad.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: Well I know I have I have siblings who are
• 12:45
Speaker 2: But I mean, I did anything they wanted me to do.
• 12:48
Speaker 2: If they told me I was going to be great,
• 12:49
Speaker 2: I was going to be great. If they told me
• 12:51
Speaker 2: I was nott the brett, I was not the breat
• 12:53
  Speaker 2: so wow, okay.
• 12:55
  Speaker 3: So I didn't go. I didn't go. And then finally
• 12:58
Speaker 3: when Harvey did go and he didn't call me to cancel,
• 13:01
Speaker 3: and I worked late on Thursday night, that wasn't an excuse.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: When I got to the house, my mother was talking
• 13:07
Speaker 3: to him on the phone and she handed me the
• 13:09
Speaker 3: receiver and he said to me, you're going next week,
• 13:13
Speaker 3: and you know that falling in love stuff. I said, okay, honey,
• 13:18
Speaker 3: what people what people don't realize is I mean. What
• 13:21
Speaker 3: I can't say on the air is what I said
• 13:24
  Speaker 3: after I hung.
• 13:25
  Speaker 2: On the phone.
• 13:26
Speaker 3: Can't you say that on the air, because those are
• 13:28
Speaker 3: not nice words, even in h Yeah, in Yiddish, in English,
• 13:32
Speaker 3: in any language you want to use. Because I said
• 13:34
Speaker 3: things like this is the ridiculous thing. I'm not gonna
• 13:38
Speaker 3: It's not gonna work. So I went the following Thursday,
• 13:42
Speaker 3: and I didn't like the leader. I didn't like her dress,
• 13:44
Speaker 3: I didn't like her husband. And they tried to sell
• 13:47
Speaker 3: me a food scale and I said, I've never weighed
• 13:49
Speaker 3: my food. He said, well, we weigh our food. So
• 13:52
Speaker 3: I bought a scale five dollars in it.
• 13:55
  Speaker 2: Haang, that's a lot.
• 13:56
Speaker 3: And the scale said postal Service. It didn't say weight watchers.
• 13:59
Speaker 3: It said post Service. That bought a scale, and then
• 14:02
  Speaker 3: I didn't like the wayre and I mean I just
• 14:05
Speaker 3: didn't like I didn't want to be there.
• 14:07
Speaker 2: And all right, well we're going to find out what
• 14:10
Speaker 2: turned around and how we knew about Millie Snyder. We're
• 14:13
Speaker 2: really supposed to be talking about the Mediterranean lifestyle and we'll.
• 14:18
Speaker 3: Get back and come back.
• 14:19
Speaker 2: Well, no, we're just going to take a quick break
• 14:20
Speaker 2: and I can come back. So we're here on the

Speaker 2: and I've asked to get to continue to talk to
• 16:38
Speaker 2: Millie Snyder because we haven't really talked about mediterran lifestyle.
• 16:43
Speaker 3: I've only been doing that for eight years. But I
• 16:45
Speaker 3: did that after weight Watchers, right, But I want to
• 16:48
Speaker 3: go back to the beginning. But so I didn't want
• 16:50
Speaker 3: to be there. I didn't like it. I hated everything. Yeah,
• 16:53
Speaker 3: And then on the first week I went on it,
• 16:56
Speaker 3: and I knew that there's only one way to handle this,
• 17:01
Speaker 3: and that is since I agreed to go, I am
• 17:03
Speaker 3: going to eat as though a famine is going to
• 17:06
Speaker 3: fall on Baltimore City because Weight Watchers is going to
• 17:09
Speaker 3: take everything that I love away. So I went back
• 17:13
Speaker 3: the next week and I thought that I should have
• 17:16
Speaker 3: lost twenty pounds. Oh I did that the week before
• 17:19
  Speaker 3: I joined.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: Oh oh, you ate everything every week before.
• 17:22
Speaker 3: You if it wasn't nailed down and not crawling, I
• 17:25
Speaker 3: ate it. So then I joined weight Watchers and that week.
• 17:29
Speaker 3: I followed it. I did everything right. I followed that
• 17:32
Speaker 3: piece of paper. I even weighed my food on that
• 17:35
Speaker 3: stupid scale. And you suffered, and you were, Oh did
• 17:38
Speaker 3: I suffer? My Goodnes the Greek restaurant that made my
• 17:41
Speaker 3: breakfast every morning. I thought they were going to have
• 17:43
Speaker 3: to go out of business because I really spent a
• 17:46
Speaker 3: lot of money every morning for breakfast. But I ate
• 17:49
Speaker 3: breakfast with my mother. But I never told my mother
• 17:51
Speaker 3: what I ate for breakfast when I got to work.
• 17:54
Speaker 3: That was another story altogether. Oh and so I go
• 17:57
Speaker 3: back and I joined at two hundred and four and
• 17:59
Speaker 3: a quarter palms, yeah, and a not very But then
• 18:04
  Speaker 3: I was.
• 18:05
Speaker 2: Just kind of giving you anything I could hear.
• 18:07
Speaker 3: I think you were.
• 18:08
Speaker 2: Six eleven too, of fours, five.
• 18:10
Speaker 3: Of course, yes, and very large bones. Look at the
• 18:13
Speaker 3: size of the bones. You've never seen a hand that
• 18:16
Speaker 3: big in your whole. Yours is bigger. No, they're not. Yes,
• 18:22
Speaker 3: it is her hand is her hand is bigger.
• 18:25
Speaker 2: You're eighty three and I'm forty three.
• 18:29
Speaker 3: You are only forty three. Wonderful God, I'm impressed.
• 18:33
Speaker 2: No, let's just say that I take advantage of senior discounts.
• 18:37
  Speaker 2: I don't care. If they're going to give them, I'm
• 18:39
Speaker 2: taking them and I a military discount. Do you take them?
• 18:43
Speaker 3: I'm going to start.
• 18:44
  Speaker 2: You don't.
• 18:45
  Speaker 3: I don't know about them.
• 18:46
  Speaker 5: I have to.
• 18:47
Speaker 3: I need to spend some time there everywhere. Okay, I'm
• 18:50
Speaker 3: gonna start Ie Hop. But you don't go to I Hop,
• 18:52
  Speaker 3: not anymore.
• 18:53
  Speaker 4: You used to.
• 18:54
Speaker 3: It used to be called the International House of Pancakes
• 18:57
Speaker 3: now but they they said, look how much KFC Dougie
• 19:01
Speaker 3: frit Oh. I did that afterwards. That's another story. It's
• 19:04
  Speaker 3: on the pop.
• 19:04
Speaker 2: Okay, So how much did you lose the first week?
• 19:06
Speaker 3: The first week, yes, three quarters of one pound, and
• 19:09
Speaker 3: that I'm going to find the leader. See, I didn't
• 19:11
Speaker 3: like her dress the first week. The second week it
• 19:13
Speaker 3: was even uglier, and I told her I won't be back.
• 19:16
Speaker 3: I said it might work for them, but it don't
• 19:18
Speaker 3: work for me. And she called me Millie. Oh, you
• 19:21
Speaker 3: don't like my name anyway.
• 19:24
Speaker 2: She said to you, Millie, you don't like my name.
• 19:26
Speaker 3: No, I said to her, Oh, she called me Millie
• 19:30
Speaker 3: And I said, oh, you must not like my name.
• 19:33
Speaker 3: I don't want to be there. And she was wearing
• 19:35
Speaker 3: the ugly the dress from the first week was ugly.
• 19:38
Speaker 3: The dress from the second week was uglier. And this
• 19:40
  Speaker 3: is the.
• 19:40
Speaker 2: Nineteen sixties, nine nine, well, still the sixties.
• 19:44
Speaker 3: But that's when I no, I'm sorry. Yeah, it was
• 19:45
Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six, September first, that was when Harvey joined. Well,
• 19:50
Speaker 3: that's my date was September the eighth. That's that's written
• 19:54
Speaker 3: in an infamy. And so I didn't like her dress,
• 19:58
Speaker 3: and she said do it for me for one more week.
• 20:01
Speaker 3: I say I didn't like her what who?
• 20:05
Speaker 2: What to? Well, that's what I'm saying. Then why why
• 20:08
Speaker 2: did she use that term do it for me?
• 20:11
Speaker 3: Because here she was out of anything else. Because I
• 20:13
Speaker 3: was so angry. You could feel my anger. I don't
• 20:17
Speaker 3: want to be there, and I don't want And the
• 20:19
Speaker 3: reason I don't want to be there is I have
• 20:21
Speaker 3: failed consistently over the years of my life.
• 20:24
Speaker 2: I'm just afraid to fail. You know what in your
• 20:26
Speaker 2: story is probably resonating with other folks. Of course, you
• 20:29
Speaker 2: found so many reasons. The dress is ugly. I have
• 20:33
Speaker 2: to use a ups scale. I don't want to fail again.
• 20:37
  Speaker 2: I mean I can, and I don't want to eat.
• 20:40
Speaker 3: I want to eat the food I like because.
• 20:42
Speaker 2: I thing is you told me one time. Remember I
• 20:45
Speaker 2: used to interview you on the morning TV show that
• 20:47
Speaker 2: I could eat a big mac.
• 20:49
  Speaker 1: That was it.
• 20:50
Speaker 2: That's all you could eat for the day. But you
• 20:51
Speaker 2: could have that big.
• 20:52
Speaker 3: Mac because and back then, I believe you counted points
• 20:57
Speaker 3: on weight Watchers, which was the concept.
• 20:59
Speaker 2: What do we do now? We still killt points, don't
• 21:01
  Speaker 2: we some.
• 21:02
  Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know because now I do Mediterranean?
• 21:05
Speaker 2: Well, tell me why the Mediterranean? Then?
• 21:08
Speaker 3: Well, because when I sold weight Watchers, I was then
• 21:11
Speaker 3: a subject to a non compete agreement for three years.
• 21:15
Speaker 3: And I said to someone who was a nutritionist here
• 21:18
Speaker 3: in Charleston, I want to do what I always did
• 21:20
Speaker 3: because I miss people. And she said, before you do anything, Mellie,
• 21:23
Speaker 3: take a look at Mediterranean. And I did and she
• 21:27
Speaker 3: I bought a book and I put myself on it
• 21:30
Speaker 3: and I followed it for five weeks and I've never
• 21:33
Speaker 3: looked back. I have never eaten better, felt better than
• 21:37
Speaker 3: I feel now. And I am not on a diet.
• 21:40
Speaker 3: If you saw what I had for dinner last night,
• 21:42
Speaker 3: you would say, move over and share it with me.
• 21:44
  Speaker 2: What'd you have?
• 21:45
Speaker 3: I had the most magnificent salad, and in it I
• 21:49
Speaker 3: had chicken, I had egg, I had salad, dressing, every
• 21:53
Speaker 3: kind of vegetable you could imagine. And in addition to that,
• 21:57
Speaker 3: I put not queen wha, I put the faroh on it.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: Oh and it was so absolutely delicious. So I've learned
• 22:06
Speaker 3: even more than I learned at weight watchers. I really
• 22:09
Speaker 3: with Mediterranean have learned how to eat and be healthy.
• 22:13
Speaker 3: And it's the hell do.
• 22:14
Speaker 2: We do that? Because I would eat like that if
• 22:17
Speaker 2: it were easy. But no, I went to Fairmont yesterday
• 22:20
Speaker 2: and then to Clarksburg, and you know what I had
• 22:22
Speaker 2: for dinner. Tell me call cessnos pepperwarn and roll with
• 22:25
  Speaker 2: everything mixed peppers.
• 22:26
Speaker 3: Well, you were in Italian country.
• 22:28
Speaker 2: I'm always, sister. I'm always an Italian country.
• 22:32
Speaker 3: And Italian and Italian food isn't bad if you know
• 22:35
  Speaker 3: how to pay.
• 22:36
Speaker 2: If you walk around like your mother did when you
• 22:38
Speaker 2: go to Italy, you know, their calves are as hard
• 22:41
Speaker 2: as rocks, and they walk everywhere, and they.
• 22:45
Speaker 3: And the real Mediterranean part of the world that they
• 22:48
Speaker 3: don't buy a nineteen hundred things at the supermarket every week.
• 22:52
Speaker 3: They buy what they need for a day or two.
• 22:55
Speaker 3: They aren't big freezers and big refrigerators and everything is fresh,
• 23:00
Speaker 3: and that's what And we can do it here if
• 23:03
Speaker 3: you shop the perimeter of your supermarket and it's all available.
• 23:07
Speaker 2: The perimeter, not the center exact.
• 23:09
Speaker 3: The center is where all the processed food is, and
• 23:11
Speaker 3: the processed food is doing us in. People don't believe
• 23:15
Speaker 3: it until something bad happens, and then there's the right
• 23:18
Speaker 3: and then there's a huge elephant in the room. So
• 23:21
Speaker 3: many people are injecting themselves with GLP and that's not
• 23:25
Speaker 3: an answer that worries you. Why because there's downsides that
• 23:30
Speaker 3: are already rearing their ugly head. And if you use
• 23:33
Speaker 3: something artificial to lose weight, what have you learned? Absolutely nothing?
• 23:39
Speaker 3: And that's the biggest concern. I've been down this road before.
• 23:42
Speaker 3: Remember the days of fen fen and.
• 23:44
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, diet my mom did the you know, diet
• 23:48
  Speaker 2: pills and cigarettes.
• 23:49
Speaker 3: Oh well it must have been the cigarettes, right.
• 23:53
Speaker 2: But that's the thing. So we need to help because
• 23:55
Speaker 2: folks will say they were like you, they were mad.
• 23:58
Speaker 2: They know they're not going to do it anything, they're
• 24:00
Speaker 2: never going to lose weight. They don't want to fail again.
• 24:04
Speaker 2: But they've taken they've taken the shots. The they're GLP ones.
• 24:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, and they're losing weight.
• 24:11
Speaker 2: They've lost weight now they feel good, So now what
• 24:15
Speaker 2: can they? Can they go? They can't stay on that forever?
• 24:18
Speaker 2: Now how do they How do they transition to a
• 24:22
Speaker 2: good diet? They need the Mediterranean.
• 24:24
Speaker 3: They need to join and need to learn how to
• 24:27
Speaker 3: eat correctly, because without that, what do you do? It's
• 24:30
Speaker 3: like the sixty four thousand dollars question. I don't know
• 24:33
Speaker 3: the answer. I do know the answer on the Mediterranean lifestyle.
• 24:37
Speaker 3: It's been around forever. It's old and the company that
• 24:41
Speaker 3: supports everything I teach, it's called Old Way.
• 24:44
Speaker 2: You tell people how they can get a hold of
• 24:45
Speaker 2: you and sign up.
• 24:46
Speaker 3: Well, we meet at the American Job Center on Leon
• 24:50
Speaker 3: Sullivan Way Thursday morning at ten o'clock and they can well, actually, no,
• 24:56
Speaker 3: we don't meet at ten o'clock. We made at nine
• 24:57
Speaker 3: point thirty. What was I thinking? And then I have
• 25:00
Speaker 3: a phone number if people want to reach us, go ahead.
• 25:03
Speaker 3: It's six eight one three one three seven seven seventy five.
• 25:08
Speaker 3: And joining us is one of the best things you'll
• 25:10
Speaker 3: ever do for you. If I have a gall in
• 25:12
Speaker 3: my group who came to me with non alcoholic cirrhosis
• 25:17
Speaker 3: and her neathrologists sent her to the Mediterranean lifestyle. She
• 25:22
Speaker 3: is seventy percent better and she's soon going to get
• 25:26
Speaker 3: a clean bill of health because, like so many that
• 25:29
Speaker 3: are in need of it, she has learned how to
• 25:31
Speaker 3: eat healthfully. This is not a diet. If anyone thinks
• 25:35
Speaker 3: that Mediterranean is a diet, it's called Mediterranean diet. I
• 25:39
Speaker 3: hate the word diet, but it's still Mediterranean diet. And
• 25:43
Speaker 3: it's a fabulous way to eat.
• 25:45
Speaker 2: And the phone number to call Millia six eight one
• 25:47
Speaker 2: three one three seven seven seven five Thursday mornings at
• 25:52
Speaker 2: nine thirty at the American.
• 25:55
Speaker 3: Job Center Job Center and it's so close to Washington Street.
• 25:59
Speaker 2: Close to everything that's right. Thank you Millie for coming in.
• 26:02
Speaker 2: I know we got a little off, but the point
• 26:04
Speaker 2: is there that you can do it. And she's one
• 26:07
Speaker 2: who who fought it for years and years and years, and.
• 26:12
Speaker 3: I ain't fight it anymore. Thank you. It is the
• 26:15
Speaker 3: light for me to be with you today.
• 26:16

  Speaker 5: come up.
• 30:45
  Speaker 2: When can I come I legally? I mean it's open
• 30:48
Speaker 2: right now, but there's gates on it.
• 30:49
Speaker 15: Yeah, so we were gated there at the base of
• 30:51
Speaker 15: the hill. We're going to be open fully our grand
• 30:56
Speaker 15: opening later in the year for the trail system in
• 30:58
Speaker 15: the additional add one of the campsites. But this upcoming
• 31:02
Speaker 15: weekend we're going to be doing an event that's just
• 31:04
Speaker 15: to get the locals up there, let them take a
• 31:06
Speaker 15: look at what all we've gotten done, get together, enjoy
• 31:09
Speaker 15: some live music, we've got two days of concerts. We
• 31:13
Speaker 15: have fireworks, professional fireworks Saturday night. We have got a
• 31:18
Speaker 15: bunch of food trucks coming up from Canall City, a
• 31:21
Speaker 15: handful and you know, some from even Clariant and Jackson County,
• 31:24
Speaker 15: some from the other end of Kanaal County to come
• 31:27
Speaker 15: up and join us with a different area of different
• 31:28
  Speaker 15: foods and treats.
• 31:29
Speaker 8: We've got some vendors showing up.
• 31:31
Speaker 15: We've got off road activities scheduled for both days, and
• 31:35
Speaker 15: our special guest is the Governor Saturday, I'm going to
• 31:38
Speaker 15: come up and hang out with us for a bit.
• 31:39
Speaker 2: So when you say special off road activities, what do
• 31:42
  Speaker 2: you mean.
• 31:43
Speaker 15: We've got some facilities that we've built on site for
• 31:47
Speaker 15: UTV training and then motorcycle training, so we're gonna have
• 31:49
Speaker 15: those open to the public to be able to come
• 31:52
Speaker 15: and run through some different obstacle obstacle courses, some jumps
• 31:56
Speaker 15: and burms and hill climbs and things that we're gonna run.
• 32:00
Speaker 15: All of our our participants that come in rent units
• 32:03
Speaker 15: off of them have to go through these training courses,
• 32:05
Speaker 15: so we're gonna have those open and they're they're directly
• 32:08
Speaker 15: adjacent to our activity and like festival area right, so
• 32:11
Speaker 15: like you can come and watch a concert and you
• 32:13
Speaker 15: can still see UTVs and dirt bikes and full sized
• 32:16
Speaker 15: vehicles traveling on different obstacles directly from kind of the
• 32:19
  Speaker 15: event space.
• 32:20
  Speaker 2: Okay, I I just thought you weren't running. You're not
• 32:23
Speaker 2: running full trails. This is just the training part.
• 32:27
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, the actual full trails. We're not quite ready yet.
• 32:29
Speaker 5: We still have some cleanup work to do, some signage
• 32:32
Speaker 5: to put out, some ratings to put on the trails,
• 32:34
Speaker 5: things of that nature. Uh, we're getting close, but we're
• 32:36
Speaker 5: not quite there yet. But this is like a little
• 32:38
Speaker 5: preview section that we are. We have ready, so we're
• 32:41
Speaker 5: gonna let people start running that.
• 32:45
Speaker 2: I'm gonna ask this and you can just tell me
• 32:47
Speaker 2: on two months from now. But when will trails be running?
• 32:50
Speaker 5: I think I think we're shooting for later this summer,
• 32:53
Speaker 5: but we don't want to say for sure yet.
• 32:55
  Speaker 2: That's fair.
• 32:55
Speaker 8: There's just a lot to get done between. You know,
• 32:57
  Speaker 8: our mapping.
• 32:59
Speaker 15: We've got a national break partner on x off Road
• 33:01
Speaker 15: that's been they've had employees down there mapping for the
• 33:04
Speaker 15: last few months, and just a lot of it's a
• 33:07
  Speaker 15: lot of trail.
• 33:07
  Speaker 8: It's a lot of stuff.
• 33:08
Speaker 15: You know, we got to run every single trail and
• 33:10
Speaker 15: it's not just running it with a GPS, it's they
• 33:13
Speaker 15: have got to stop and take pictures of every obstacle
• 33:15
Speaker 15: to do ratings. They've got to stop and change whether
• 33:18
  Speaker 15: it's a tree that's down or it's a mud hole.
• 33:20
Speaker 15: They have to mark every single thing. So, like, we
• 33:22
Speaker 15: just had a guy here over the weekend and he's
• 33:23
Speaker 15: probably has a file of over a thousand pictures and
• 33:26
Speaker 15: he probably only traverse one hundred miles and our trail
• 33:28
Speaker 15: system is going to be somewhere in the neighborhood north
• 33:30
Speaker 15: of three hundred. So, like the amount of time that
• 33:33
Speaker 15: they're actually putting in is really.
• 33:36
  Speaker 8: Is really hard.
• 33:37
  Speaker 15: And so it's something that's you know, it's it's it's
• 33:40
Speaker 15: kind of like we would like to see it progress quicker.
• 33:43
Speaker 15: But at the same time, if you look what they're
• 33:44
Speaker 15: actually going to produce when it's done, if you're going
• 33:46
Speaker 15: to be able to pull up a map before you go,
• 33:48
Speaker 15: you know exactly every obstacle, you know the trail rating,
• 33:51
Speaker 15: you know the difficulty, you know what vehicle is appropriate
• 33:53
Speaker 15: for that trail. I think we're gonna have a really
• 33:56
Speaker 15: nice polished product when we're actually you know, ready to.
• 33:58
Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, so that's it's exactly why you want to wait.
• 34:01
Speaker 2: So in the meantime, so we know we've got this down,
• 34:04
Speaker 2: there's there's probably never been something like this in the
• 34:07
Speaker 2: eastern part of the county before, except if you guys
• 34:10
Speaker 2: just threw some things together before we knew it. No,
• 34:13
Speaker 2: as far as our event, like this is like an official.
• 34:15
Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, there's I mean to do a free concert
• 34:18
Speaker 15: with bands coming clear from Nashville all over the Appalachian
• 34:21
Speaker 15: Basin for two nights of free concerts, professional fireworks, you know,
• 34:25
Speaker 15: the food truck gathering, all the big event stage and everything. Yeah,
• 34:29
Speaker 15: I mean there's nothing like that that's went on.
• 34:31
Speaker 2: That's awesome. Okay. So in the meantime, while there are
• 34:34
Speaker 2: folks are you know, chomping at the bit to go
• 34:36
Speaker 2: and be ready to run, there are things that we
• 34:40
Speaker 2: as a community can do. This is the eastern part
• 34:43
Speaker 2: of the county. We're now calling the gateway to the Gorge.
• 34:45
Speaker 2: There's going to people. It will be people on the
• 34:47
Speaker 2: way going there. One stop that you could also have
• 34:50
Speaker 2: is Virginia's Chapelin. If I have time within the next
• 34:53
Speaker 2: eighteen minutes. We'll talk about that real quick. But what
• 34:56
Speaker 2: folks can do this is a great entrepreneurial opportunity for
• 35:00
Speaker 2: people to buy some homes that are on sale up
• 35:04
Speaker 2: along there and make airbnbs. Because you all are saying
• 35:09
  Speaker 2: we need lodging.
• 35:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, there's other things like homes that are
• 35:14
Speaker 5: needing rehabbed, you know, that are just vacant. Those homes
• 35:17
Speaker 5: are great candidates. Commercial spaces that are now empty can
• 35:20
Speaker 5: be made into large spaces for people to have lodging.
• 35:24
Speaker 5: So people who have lands that don't want to sell
• 35:28
Speaker 5: it don't know what to do with it, we open
• 35:31
Speaker 5: or open to RV parks. You know, the area really
• 35:33
Speaker 5: needs lodging. The closest city center to lodging right now
• 35:36
Speaker 5: is the city of Charleston, which is great, but we'd
• 35:38
Speaker 5: like to have something closer to the trailhead if possible.
• 35:42
Speaker 5: There's going to be needs for food, there's going to
• 35:44
Speaker 5: be needs for repairs for the machines, retail, so there's
• 35:48
Speaker 5: there's many ways to service the park and we hope
• 35:51
Speaker 5: the community gets involved and benefits.
• 35:52
Speaker 2: From it well. And here here are some of the
• 35:54
Speaker 2: things I went to the community dinner in Campbell's Creek,
• 35:57
Speaker 2: and that's always a little space place for me. It's
• 36:01
Speaker 2: just it's like five minutes from Charleston, so I'm driving
• 36:04
Speaker 2: there and now I look at things in a different light.
• 36:07
Speaker 2: Many times, there are homes that look like they could
• 36:10
Speaker 2: be renovated or purchased. So if you drove up Campbell's
• 36:14
Speaker 2: Creek and then you're like, oh, oh, right, there's a bar. Okay,
• 36:18
Speaker 2: oh right, there is Dollar General. Right there is I
• 36:22
Speaker 2: don't know if it's a fast check at a grocery store.
• 36:25
Speaker 2: And when I go places with my family, like my
• 36:29
Speaker 2: brother in law and brothers, they'll be like, yeah, there
• 36:32
Speaker 2: was an Airbnb, Like oh, let's go.
• 36:34
  Speaker 4: To this bar.
• 36:34
Speaker 2: Let's let's go get stuff. Like Campbell's Creek is the
• 36:37
Speaker 2: perfect area to have Airbnbs to then cater to aot.
• 36:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the perfect mix. Like you said, it's very
• 36:43
Speaker 5: close to Charleston. Our trails literally lead right down to
• 36:46
  Speaker 5: Campbell's Creek.
• 36:48
  Speaker 8: Absolutely, it's a.
• 36:49
Speaker 5: Great spot if you wanted to have the mixture of
• 36:51
Speaker 5: the city life and the woods life. It's the cool
• 36:54
Speaker 5: thing is anything in the Upper Canal Valley.
• 36:56
Speaker 2: That's up those hallows, anything exactly.
• 36:58
Speaker 8: With a route sixty.
• 36:59
Speaker 15: Yep, you can grab let's say in a house or
• 37:03
Speaker 15: a house that you may have that you're looking to
• 37:05
Speaker 15: move somewhere else. And the nice thing about our trail
• 37:08
Speaker 15: system is it's not like it's gated. It's not like
• 37:10
Speaker 15: you've got an inner across from rivers That High. You know,
• 37:12
Speaker 15: we're going to send the out of state people up
• 37:14
Speaker 15: our blacktop road to Riverside High to utilize our facilities.
• 37:18
Speaker 15: But if you had something up Campbell Creek, let's saying
• 37:20
Speaker 15: you rented out that house. These people can go straight
• 37:22
Speaker 15: from their house and go straight onto the trail system.
• 37:24
Speaker 8: It's not gated. You know, you can access it from anywhere.
• 37:26
Speaker 2: Yes, oh man, Okay, So there's my tip of the
• 37:31
Speaker 2: tip of the day, tip of the week because it's
• 37:34
Speaker 2: Campbell's Creek. But then there's a lot of places in Bell.
• 37:36
Speaker 2: I was bidding on something at Bell it was along
• 37:40
Speaker 2: the river. I mean, you all know I'm a big
• 37:44
Speaker 2: talker sometimes in a big thinker. I just don't have
• 37:47
Speaker 2: the money to back it up. And one of my
• 37:49
Speaker 2: brother I'm like, look at that, he said, Natalie. The
• 37:51
Speaker 2: location because it was on the river is worth more
• 37:53
Speaker 2: than that is worth forty eight thousand dollars that I
• 37:56
  Speaker 2: didn't have.
• 37:57
Speaker 5: But so there's just riverfront property, that's for sure.
• 38:01
Speaker 2: Well they're all making any more land either. That's what
• 38:04
Speaker 2: we farm people know that all right. So it's Appalachian
• 38:07
Speaker 2: Outlaw Trails. This free this Friday and Saturday. Make your
• 38:12
  Speaker 2: last pitch.
• 38:12
Speaker 5: Yeah, Friday, Saturday four twe eleven. We'd love to have
• 38:15
Speaker 5: you out. Lots of great food, great bands. I believe
• 38:19
Speaker 5: there's five three Friday, two Saturday, some awesome fireworks. This
• 38:23
Speaker 5: professional guy, he said, listen, I'm gonna make you a
• 38:25
Speaker 5: show to remember. So great fireworks coming Saturday at ten pm.
• 38:29
Speaker 5: There'll be a lots of activities. You can watch people
• 38:32
Speaker 5: dirt do, dirt drags, barrel racing, rock crawling, hard and
• 38:36
Speaker 5: durea of course for the dirt bike guys. Plenty of
• 38:38
Speaker 5: things to spectat and do and get you a little preview,
• 38:40
Speaker 5: so it'll be really fun of.
• 38:41
Speaker 8: It and totally accessible.
• 38:43
Speaker 15: One thing we've been asked handful of times is, yeah,
• 38:45
Speaker 15: we are an off road park, but you come right
• 38:47
Speaker 15: off for out sixty across from Riverside High We have
• 38:49
Speaker 15: a run stop light right. We have two lane black
• 38:51
Speaker 15: top road that leads you right to the event area.
• 38:52
Speaker 15: So you could bring your low two seater car, you
• 38:57
Speaker 15: can bring a minivan, you can bring whatever you need
• 38:59
Speaker 15: to bring, or you can bring you TV's in. Everybody
• 39:01
Speaker 15: is totally welcome, even if you're not in off roading,
• 39:03
Speaker 15: come join us for the weekend.
• 39:04
Speaker 5: For everybody that's already out in the woods riding on
• 39:07
Speaker 5: the backside of the property, you can still come in
• 39:09
Speaker 5: from the backside of the property if you're in your
• 39:11
Speaker 5: UTV and avoid Route sixty and coming in the backway.
• 39:14
Speaker 2: So this is awesome, right or shine, we got It's okay.
• 39:17
Speaker 2: There'll be a mudball. That's fine too, Right, you guys
• 39:20
Speaker 2: can cover up the bands to just cover the equipment. Hey,
• 39:23
Speaker 2: all right, this is great. This is a this is
• 39:26
Speaker 2: a good weekend. And if you go a little bit
• 39:28
Speaker 2: farther right outside of Glasgow is Virginia's Chapel. It's this
• 39:32
Speaker 2: old Civil War church. It's going to be open for
• 39:34
  Speaker 2: the weekend. And that's a great And that's what's so
• 39:37
Speaker 2: great about the Gateway to the Gorge. You have this opportunity,
• 39:41
Speaker 2: but you have history, and you have all kinds of
• 39:44
Speaker 2: events that are taking place. You know, when Montgomery gets
• 39:47
Speaker 2: their splash prow to open. We have all kinds of
• 39:49
Speaker 2: things going on in the eastern part of the county.
• 39:51
Speaker 2: So gentlemen Chris and Eric, thank you very much, and uh,
• 39:55
Speaker 2: we'll keep a track of everything's and we'll be right back. Folks.
• 39:57

• 43:28
Speaker 2: I love talking about apprenticeships. I mean what I consider
• 43:34
  Speaker 2: apprenticeships are you're don't you don't know anything, you don't
• 43:40
Speaker 2: know your head from my own the ground, but yet
• 43:41
Speaker 2: you're getting paid to learn how to put things together.
• 43:45
Speaker 14: Absolutely, we'll bring people in that has little to no knowledge.
• 43:48
Speaker 14: We'll put them through our apprenticeship program. Uh it's a
• 43:52
Speaker 14: four year program. They'll come to class about five times
• 43:54
Speaker 14: a year each year and another that they'll be working
• 43:56
Speaker 14: in a field with a journeyman carpenter learning it.
• 43:59
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 43:59
Speaker 14: So yeah, that's a great opportunity for someone that has
• 44:01
Speaker 14: no knowledge of the trade at all to get them
• 44:04
Speaker 14: through and get them started in a career.
• 44:06
  Speaker 2: And you're you're with carpenters and a big day. A
• 44:11
Speaker 2: big day was yesterday.
• 44:13
Speaker 14: Yes, yes, we had our grand opening. We were in
• 44:19
Speaker 14: South Charleston since two thousand and one and our program
• 44:23
Speaker 14: has you know, growed, you know, quite a bit. We
• 44:28
Speaker 14: just didn't have enough space. We was teaching classes at
• 44:31
Speaker 14: our center there. We had you know, classes going at
• 44:33
Speaker 14: our council building in the basement in Huntington. You know,
• 44:37
Speaker 14: so we was all over the place. Yeah, opportunity come
• 44:40
Speaker 14: up and we jumped on it to buy the church
• 44:43
Speaker 14: down at Nitro in front of the High School. You know,
• 44:45
Speaker 14: it's almost doubled our space there. So we've got the
• 44:48
Speaker 14: ability to run about twice a monty apprentices to the
• 44:51
Speaker 14: program now that we used to have.
• 44:53
Speaker 2: And you had the open house and what were you
• 44:56
Speaker 2: trying to do just show off your new digs or yeah,
• 44:59
Speaker 2: that's what trying to get people in. This is where
• 45:01
Speaker 2: you're gonna come and learn.
• 45:02
Speaker 14: Yes, yes, So what we've done is we had schools
• 45:05
Speaker 14: come through Nitro High School, had some folks come in
• 45:07
Speaker 14: West Virginia, Women's Works, we have some of the youth
• 45:10
Speaker 14: build programs that come through. You know a lot of
• 45:12
Speaker 14: local politicians were there. Yeah, just to show off. You
• 45:15
Speaker 14: know what we actually can do, you know, show the
• 45:17
Speaker 14: facility and the kind of train that we do there.
• 45:20
Speaker 2: What does someone need to do? And by the way,
• 45:22
Speaker 2: I was still canvassing. We were still canvassing votes yesterday,
• 45:27
Speaker 2: long long ballot or I would have been there pounding
• 45:31
Speaker 2: and nail. Where does someone start, like, Okay, what if
• 45:36
Speaker 2: they didn't make it to the open house yesterday or
• 45:39
Speaker 2: weren't you know, didn't have that natural rate that's not
• 45:45
Speaker 2: really the right word, but that you know, going from
• 45:47
Speaker 2: high school to this or going from community and technical
• 45:50
Speaker 2: college to going in.
• 45:52
Speaker 14: So what we do We reach out to a lot
• 45:54
Speaker 14: of the high school programs. We'll go visit and talk
• 45:57
Speaker 14: to them. Ye what they do is they apply online,
• 46:00
Speaker 14: We'll bring them in. Well, we'll give them an information
• 46:02
Speaker 14: session interview. The information session talks about all the things
• 46:06
Speaker 14: that comes along within a printice. So you know what
• 46:08
Speaker 14: to expect coming to our program. You know, the travel,
• 46:12
Speaker 14: you know the work, how how all that goes. So
• 46:14
Speaker 14: people can make educated decisions on if we're the right
• 46:16
Speaker 14: fit for them and and and the same for them
• 46:19
Speaker 14: for us. But they'll go through an interview process. You know,
• 46:23
Speaker 14: we have a few activities we have them to do
• 46:25
Speaker 14: just to show that they're physically capable of doing the
• 46:28
Speaker 14: work and make sure that they understand, you know, what
• 46:30
Speaker 14: they're signing up for, right. So yeah, so we bring
• 46:33
Speaker 14: them in that way. We we do interviews based off
• 46:37
Speaker 14: of the workload in the in the local area.
• 46:40
Speaker 2: So well, I mean to think about it here, I
• 46:42
Speaker 2: am trying to get the whole eastern part of Kanawha
• 46:45
Speaker 2: County built up with lodging, whether it's Airbnb, whether someone
• 46:51
Speaker 2: has you know, other ideas an RV park or anything
• 46:55
Speaker 2: like that. And these are the kind of people that
• 46:57
Speaker 2: we need. I mean, people tell me all the time,
• 46:59
Speaker 2: you know, good handyman, but this goes beyond a handyman,
• 47:03
Speaker 2: doesn't it. And when you have a skill like this,
• 47:07
Speaker 2: I mean, you're getting the job done right, not just
• 47:11
Speaker 2: throwing a car. I can, I can put up drywall.
• 47:13
Speaker 2: I'm not sure you know what it's going to end
• 47:16
Speaker 2: up being, and I know all the process of all that,
• 47:19
Speaker 2: but a skilled worker makes a difference.
• 47:22
Speaker 14: It does make a difference. You get the job done
• 47:24
Speaker 14: right the first time. So it's it's great for the contractors,
• 47:28
Speaker 14: the end users. I mean, so we got to make
• 47:31
Speaker 14: sure that our workforce has trained well, and that's where
• 47:34
Speaker 14: that's what we do, is we'll bring them in. You know,
• 47:37
Speaker 14: in the carpenter's side, we we train on about thirty
• 47:40
Speaker 14: different aspects of carpentry, whether it be interior systems, building, scaffoling, uh,
• 47:46
Speaker 14: you know, welding. It's crazy, I mean the amount of
• 47:49
Speaker 14: work that we do.
• 47:51
Speaker 2: And so when when someone comes in, do you drug
• 47:55
Speaker 2: test them right then? Or I know you drug test
• 47:58
Speaker 2: throughout right, explain that.
• 47:59
Speaker 14: They have to pass the drug test to get into
• 48:01
Speaker 14: our program. That's that's probably one of the the main
• 48:05
Speaker 14: conditions you be able to pass the drug test.
• 48:07
  Speaker 8: Uh, you don't.
• 48:08
Speaker 14: You can't send people out into the field. You know
• 48:10
Speaker 14: that are are intoxicated. You know they're going to hurt
• 48:13
Speaker 14: theirselves or someone else. So, yes, drug testing is very
• 48:16
Speaker 14: important to us for sure. You know, they get drug
• 48:20
Speaker 14: tested throughout our program. Uh, A lot of contractors when
• 48:23
Speaker 14: they go to a job, they're drug tested. So that
• 48:26
Speaker 14: that is a very very important thing to stay drug free.
• 48:29
Speaker 2: Well. And also the way I understand it, make sure
• 48:32
Speaker 2: I'm correct that you know, if somebody gets tripped up.
• 48:36
Speaker 2: The thing is you could be working and and get
• 48:38
Speaker 2: a back injury, and then you're you're prescribed hydrocodone or OxyContin. Yeah, OxyContin,
• 48:47
Speaker 2: some of those drugs, and those are the ones that
• 48:49
Speaker 2: you can that's what you can become addicted to. And
• 48:52
Speaker 2: it wasn't at not any real fault of your own.
• 48:55
Speaker 2: That's not really fair to say. But it was just
• 48:57
  Speaker 2: an injury.
• 48:57
Speaker 8: It was an injury, and and and and.
• 48:59
Speaker 2: It keeps getting But the apprenticeship in the Union, the
• 49:02
Speaker 2: Carpenter's Union is there to help you get back on
• 49:06
  Speaker 2: the right track.
• 49:06
Speaker 14: Absolutely first and foremost. We want to make sure that
• 49:10
Speaker 14: our members are safe and healthy, right, you know that
• 49:12
Speaker 14: that is very important to us. And you know we
• 49:14
Speaker 14: have you know, the Lead program where you can get
• 49:17
Speaker 14: assistance for for folks that's get in a situation exactly
• 49:20
Speaker 14: on what you're saying. That is very common where someone
• 49:23
Speaker 14: will have an injury and they'll be prescribed to medication
• 49:26
Speaker 14: they get addicted to it.
• 49:27
Speaker 2: Okay, I'm talking with Everett Johnson who's with the Carpenter's Union.
• 49:32
Speaker 2: We're talking about apprenticeship new new open training center in
• 49:38
Speaker 2: Nitro at the old church in front of the high school.
• 49:41
Speaker 2: And what is where can someone find you? They just
• 49:46
Speaker 2: go on the website.
• 49:47
Speaker 14: Yes, yes, so they can get on our website wvcarpenter
• 49:51
Speaker 14: dot com and that'll direct you to our Eastern Atlantic
• 49:54
  Speaker 14: States Carpenter's Technicians.
• 49:55
  Speaker 2: Okay uh.
• 49:56
Speaker 14: We went to a big merge here a while by
• 49:59
Speaker 14: about a year and a half ago, we went from
• 50:01
Speaker 14: you know, three carpenter apprenticeship schools in the state of
• 50:04
Speaker 14: West Virginia. We merged in with the mill Rights. They're
• 50:08
Speaker 14: under my umbrella as well. But we have seventeen different
• 50:12
Speaker 14: campuses throughout our entire district now, so it's huge. There's
• 50:16
Speaker 14: forty three thousand members over forty five hundred apprentices. So
• 50:21
Speaker 14: now the training that we provide, we're able to take
• 50:24
Speaker 14: subject matter experts from all different locations, whether it be Pittsburgh, Philadelphia,
• 50:29
Speaker 14: West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and they could go to any
• 50:33
Speaker 14: one of those seventeen schools and provide that training for
• 50:37
Speaker 14: the individuals. You know, in a Pacific aspect of training.
• 50:40
Speaker 2: How much would quickly someone make starting out as an apprentice.
• 50:48
Speaker 14: An apprentice dependent on the contract in the local area.
• 50:51
Speaker 14: You know, the Charleston area starts out seventy percent of
• 50:53
Speaker 14: the journeyman rates, so it's you know, twenty two to
• 50:55
Speaker 14: twenty three dollars an hour.
• 50:56
Speaker 2: Wow, plus you know nothing yet are they're bringing you in?
• 51:00
Speaker 2: As long as you're drug free. You're the right fit.
• 51:03
Speaker 2: You have that you understand the expectations. Yes, you're getting
• 51:05
Speaker 2: twenty two or twenty three dollars an hour.
• 51:07
Speaker 14: Yeah, plus benefits. You know there's eleven dollars into a pension.
• 51:12
Speaker 14: We have five dollars and forty cents into a newdi
• 51:14
  Speaker 14: plus healthcare.
• 51:15
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 51:16
Speaker 14: In return, you have to work hard, exactly. I have
• 51:18
Speaker 14: to make yourself available every day. You got to show
• 51:20
Speaker 14: up every day. You know that those contractors are paying
• 51:23
Speaker 14: a lot of money for those apprentices to be there.
• 51:25
Speaker 14: So what they don't have in knowledge, they have to
• 51:27
  Speaker 14: have in efor.
• 51:28
Speaker 2: All right, it's wvcarpenter dot com. Evert Johnson, thank you
