- 0:00SpaceX has set a launch target of May 27th, 2025 at 2330 UTC
- 0:05for Starship Flight 9. The launch will take place at *
- 0:07Base, the company's private site in Buccateeka, Texas.
- 0:10However, the mission is still waiting for a green light from
- 0:13the Federal Aviation Administration, which must first
- 0:15conclude its investigation into the failed Starship Flight 8.
- 0:19This flight will use Ship 35 and Super Heavy Booster 14-2.
- 0:24Ship 35 is a newer version of the vehicle known as a Block 2
- 0:27prototype. Booster 14-2 is notable because
- 0:30it previously flew on Flight 7 and will now be launched again,
- 0:34making it the first reused Super Heavy booster.
- 0:36Flight 9 will not include a catch attempt with the launch
- 0:39tower arms. Instead, Booster 14-2 will
- 0:42attempt to control descent and soft splashdown in the Gulf of
- 0:45Mexico. Ship 35 will continue into
- 0:48orbit, re enter Earth's atmosphere and aim for a water
- 0:51landing in the Indian Ocean. Starship has flown before, but
- 0:56none of those tests combined orbital insertion, full re
- 0:59entry, and controlled recovery of both stages.
- 1:01If successful, Flight 9 will prove the system can work from
- 1:04start to finish. The booster will use 33 Raptor
- 1:07engines, with 29 of them having flown before.
- 1:10The Raptor 3 engine is a key upgrade.
- 1:12It's lighter, simpler to produce, and generates up to 280
- 1:16tons of thrust per engine. With a specific impulse of 350
- 1:20seconds. Each engine weighs about 1525
- 1:24kilograms. Ship 35 has 6 Raptor engines,
- 1:27three designed for sea level operations and three vacuum
- 1:30optimized for use in space. Both stages burn a cryogenic mix
- 1:34of liquid methane and liquid oxygen known as metalox.
- 1:38These fuels are cooled near their freezing points,
- 1:41increasing energy density and improving efficiency.
- 1:44Thermal protection is another key area of testing.
- 1:47Starship's black heat shield tiles can survive temperatures
- 1:50up to 1400°C. Flight 9 will include
- 1:54experiments using fewer tiles, experimental active cooled
- 1:58systems, and possibly ablative materials, all aimed at
- 2:02improving reusability while saving weight.
- 2:04The flight profile starts with lift off from Starbase Texas.
- 2:08Once the booster separates, it will turn, reignite some engines
- 2:11and splash down in the Gulf. Ship 35 will continue into
- 2:15orbit, coast for several hours and then perform a re entry burn
- 2:19to slow down before attempting a soft water landing in the Indian
- 2:23Ocean. SpaceX may also include test
- 2:25payloads. These could include simulated
- 2:28Starling satellites or structural mass simulators.
- 2:31One goal is to fly a trajectory that stresses the vehicles
- 2:34control flaps to gather real world data for future design
- 2:37updates. Flight 9 is also a test of
- 2:40durability. Reusing Booster 14-2 checks
- 2:44whether the hardware can withstand stress from multiple
- 2:46missions. Even though the booster won't be
- 2:48recovered for reuse this time, bringing it down softly allow
- 2:52SpaceX to inspect its performance and tweak future
- 2:55designs. The new heat shield materials
- 2:57and experimental designs on Ship 35 help SpaceX figure out what
- 3:01works best. Some tests will stress the
- 3:04vehicle in ways it hasn't been tested before, especially on re
- 3:08entry. These real world trials are the
- 3:10only way to validate systems before using them on operational
- 3:13missions. SpaceX still needs regulatory
- 3:15approval before it can fly. The FAA is reviewing what went
- 3:19wrong in Flight 8 before giving permission for this next test.
- 3:23Until that process ends, the May 27th date is a target, not a
- 3:27guarantee.
