- 1:14Speaker 3: go ahead and tell you right now, if you're going
- 1:15Speaker 3: to be traveling in the Charleston area, don't Okay, now
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm kidding about that, but there are traffic tie ups everywhere,
- 1:22Speaker 3: and I'll try to get in that a little bit
- 1:24Speaker 3: later on. But plan accordingly. If you're coming into the city,
- 1:27Speaker 3: or it's really not the city as much as it is,
- 1:29Speaker 3: think the interstate. So just know institutes, just know the
- 1:33Speaker 3: Carter Bridge. There's a lot of traffic out there today,
- 1:36Speaker 3: so it's going to be continuing, so just be prepared,
- 1:40Speaker 3: no before you go. As they say coming up on
- 1:42Speaker 3: the show today, it's been one of the more popular
- 1:45Speaker 3: events in Charleston for years, and now it's not gonna
- 1:47Speaker 3: happen anymore. Talking about Girls' Night Out, Sandy call is
- 1:50Speaker 3: someone who's been heavily involved with that event for the year.
- 1:53Speaker 3: She's going to join us to talk about him. Kinnaw
- 1:54Speaker 3: County Prosecutor Deb Rusnick is here to talk about some
- 1:57Speaker 3: news out of the Gavin Smith trial. There is a
- 1:59Speaker 3: new executive director of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association
- 2:03Speaker 3: and he is friend of the program. Jim Workman of
- 2:05Speaker 3: Wally and Whimpy's fame. He's going to join us to
- 2:07Speaker 3: talk about that and to talk about the return of
- 2:09Speaker 3: rich Rod. Yesterday, of course, the Big twelve media event
- 2:13Speaker 3: down in Texas, Coach Rod pretty much stole the show.
- 2:16Speaker 3: He was the highlight and all the eyes and cameras
- 2:19Speaker 3: and phones were on him down there. So we'll talk
- 2:21Speaker 3: to Jim about that, and as always, your phone calls

- 2:32Speaker 3: let's welcome to the show. Canon County Commissioner A. Lance Wheeler,
- 2:35Speaker 3: Good morning, sir, Welcome to the show.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Good morning Dave, thanks for having me, Thank you.
- 2:38Speaker 3: For being here. Big happenings at Meadlewood Park in Tornado.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Ribbon cutting happening this Saturday at ten.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Talk about him, Well, I think we want to back
- 2:46Speaker 5: up and just talk about what we've been doing at
- 2:48Speaker 5: the Kenaw County Commission when it comes to our playgrounds.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Okay, you know that was gonna be my next point. Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 3: but I like your plan better. Well, thank you very much. Well,
- 2:58Speaker 3: you know what I think we want to look at is.
- 3:01Speaker 5: I was looking at our playgrounds Coonskin Pounder Park metal
- 3:05Speaker 5: Wood in Tornado, and I noticed just how dilapidated they were,
- 3:09Speaker 5: how there was rust, plastic broken off. They were unsafe
- 3:14Speaker 5: for our children to be playing in our parks. And
- 3:17Speaker 5: that was something that was very concerning for me because
- 3:19Speaker 5: to somebody who has a three year old and a
- 3:21Speaker 5: one year old, I wouldn't put my kids on those playgrounds.
- 3:24Speaker 5: And if that's the case, then as an elected official,
- 3:26Speaker 5: I think we have the due diligence to make right
- 3:30Speaker 5: in providing these outdoor activities for our children. And so
- 3:34Speaker 5: with Commissioner Selango, Commissioner Tenant, and myself, we've moved forward
- 3:38Speaker 5: with this infrastructure project to revitalize and change the playgrounds
- 3:45Speaker 5: at our parks, and metal Wood's going to be the
- 3:47Speaker 5: first one. We're going to be having the ribbon cutting
- 3:49Speaker 5: this Saturday at Metoalwood Park, which is located in Tornado,
- 3:53Speaker 5: West Virginia. We have redesigned and replaced the entire playground.
- 3:59Speaker 5: It's going to have a section for older kids and
- 4:01Speaker 5: younger kids. It's gonna have swings which weren't there before.
- 4:05Speaker 5: And this is just an incredible infrastructure for our children,
- 4:10Speaker 5: not just for the people of Tornado, which you know,
- 4:13Speaker 5: I feel have been underserved for a long time. But
- 4:16Speaker 5: this is the place that kids from Saint Albans, from Nitro,
- 4:20Speaker 5: from Charleston can come enjoy this beautiful park in meadow
- 4:24Speaker 5: Wood and have a place to safely play on a
- 4:27Speaker 5: playground and then create memories. And I think that's what's
- 4:30Speaker 5: important about this announcement, this ribbon cutting on Saturday, is
- 4:34Speaker 5: creating a safe place to create memories for kids and
- 4:38Speaker 5: the families in this entire region.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Here we're talking with Kennawk County Commission on land sweet
- 4:43Speaker 3: how long has that park been there? It had been
- 4:44Speaker 3: an operation to have any idea.
- 4:46Speaker 5: That park was attained from a land grabbed in nineteen
- 4:53Speaker 5: fifty nine, I believe from the Kennaw County Commission. It
- 4:55Speaker 5: was an old farm and there was a lawsuit and
- 4:59Speaker 5: in that lawsuit, the Cannall County Commission was able to
- 5:01Speaker 5: obtain that land and you know, a lot of that's
- 5:05Speaker 5: just been there. And I think that I want to
- 5:06Speaker 5: give kudos to the Coal River Group, who is the
- 5:09Speaker 5: one that puts on the tord cole that we talked
- 5:12Speaker 5: so highly about. But the Coal River Group is established
- 5:15Speaker 5: there with one acre of land from the Cannall County
- 5:18Speaker 5: Commission and they've been taking care of that park with
- 5:21Speaker 5: putting trails in cleaning it up. They've been doing an
- 5:24Speaker 5: excellent job. And so this is something that I think
- 5:27Speaker 5: with Kennall County Commission and our Kennall County Parks and
- 5:30Speaker 5: rec reinvesting in that area and really doing what's best
- 5:34Speaker 5: for the children is important, and that's what we've done.
- 5:38Speaker 3: And again that area over in Tornado, as you said,
- 5:42Speaker 3: a lot of people think and probably rightfully so as
- 5:45Speaker 3: you as you stated that it's been underserved through the years.
- 5:48Speaker 3: But there's a lot of good people over there and
- 5:49Speaker 3: a lot of kids are going to enjoy this.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Park absolutely, and I think that anyone who hasn't been
- 5:55Speaker 5: to Meadowood Park and Tornado, I would highly encourage you
- 5:57Speaker 5: to go and visit today. Once you drive in, it's
- 6:02Speaker 5: absolutely breathtaking. You know, you drive in and you're surrounded
- 6:06Speaker 5: by trees with a lot of flat land. There's a
- 6:10Speaker 5: pond there that the Knaal County Commission stocks with bass
- 6:14Speaker 5: and catfish for people of all ages to enjoy. There's
- 6:18Speaker 5: walking trails miles and miles of walking trails. Uh, there's
- 6:22Speaker 5: the kayak access by the river. I mean, it's just
- 6:25Speaker 5: really a wonderful place to go enjoy the outdoors, creating
- 6:30Speaker 5: memories with your family and and just having a great time.
- 6:35Speaker 5: You know, here in West Virginia, as you know, Dave,
- 6:37Speaker 5: we have beautiful mountains, we have beautiful waters with rivers
- 6:40Speaker 5: access and Meadowood is an incredible place to be. And
- 6:46Speaker 5: with this playground, we're just going to be enticing more
- 6:48Speaker 5: people to come and enjoy the outdoors here in Kennall County.
- 6:51Speaker 5: And again, at the end of the day, we do
- 6:53Speaker 5: this for the children. This is for their future, for
- 6:55Speaker 5: them to have a place to safely play on a
- 6:57Speaker 5: playground and be able to enjoy creating memories with their families.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Talking again with the Kennaugh County Commissioner, Lance Wheeler Dave
- 7:03Speaker 3: Alan show on five eighty Live is brought to you
- 7:05Speaker 3: in part by Morgan and Morgan. With more than twenty
- 7:08Speaker 3: billion dollars recovered. They believe when you're injured, you deserve more.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. You talked
- 7:13Speaker 3: about some of the parks and playgrounds, some of the
- 7:15Speaker 3: work that the Commission has been doing here as of
- 7:18Speaker 3: late to what's on the radar, I mean for future projects, Well, I.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Think we're going to continue to do what we've been
- 7:23Speaker 5: making announcements on. You know, we try not to get
- 7:25Speaker 5: too overwhelmed sometimes, but you know, we just recently are
- 7:30Speaker 5: scheduling a meeting with the State of West Virginia to
- 7:33Speaker 5: continue the Appalachian Outlaw trails that I've been on this
- 7:36Speaker 5: show to talk about before as I've been going by
- 7:39Speaker 5: the way, Well that's what we're going to be doing.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Thankfully to the state legislature and Governor Patrick Morrissey, they
- 7:45Speaker 5: were able to obtain two hundred and fifty thousand dollars
- 7:48Speaker 5: in the budget this year which started July first, So
- 7:51Speaker 5: we're going to be having a meeting with the states
- 7:53Speaker 5: to discuss moving forward how to be able to utilize
- 7:57Speaker 5: that money to you know, create the trailhead with campgrounds
- 8:03Speaker 5: with currently two thousand acres of land for dirt bike,
- 8:08Speaker 5: ATV and jeep trails, but we've also been working with
- 8:11Speaker 5: the landowners that get us to that goal of one
- 8:14Speaker 5: hundred thousand acres of trails, which would be the largest
- 8:18Speaker 5: trail system trail park in the country. There is no
- 8:23Speaker 5: other trail park that has one hundred thousand acres of
- 8:26Speaker 5: trails within the United States, and so I think by
- 8:30Speaker 5: doing that, having that right in our backyard, right here
- 8:32Speaker 5: in Kannall County, just twenty minutes from Charleston, is an
- 8:36Speaker 5: incredible opportunity not just for tourism, but for the locals
- 8:40Speaker 5: as well to have a place that they're able to
- 8:42Speaker 5: enjoy safely riding their ATVs, their side by sides, their
- 8:46Speaker 5: dirt bikes, and being able to enjoy the great outdoors,
- 8:49Speaker 5: while we're also marketing this to people to come to
- 8:52Speaker 5: state of West Virginia to Knnall County and spend their
- 8:56Speaker 5: hard earned money in our hotels, our mom and pop shops,
- 9:00Speaker 5: gas stations, and enjoy the opportunity of the economic impact
- 9:04Speaker 5: that that would bring, while also giving something for the
- 9:07Speaker 5: locals to enjoy at the same time. You know I've
- 9:09Speaker 5: talked about Dave, it's both those check boxes.
- 9:11Speaker 6: Right.
- 9:11Speaker 5: If you can look at a project and you can
- 9:13Speaker 5: go check check check and it checks all those boxes,
- 9:16Speaker 5: you know you've got something great. I think the Appalachian
- 9:18Speaker 5: Outlaw Trails is one of those. Obviously, what we've done
- 9:21Speaker 5: over in Meadowood with the hatfilm McCoy Dirt Bike Trails,
- 9:25Speaker 5: which is for up to forty miles of dirt bike trails,
- 9:28Speaker 5: which is the largest east of the Mississippi. I can't
- 9:32Speaker 5: find anything west of the Mississippi, but we can't confirm
- 9:35Speaker 5: that yet, so let's just say east of the Mississippi.
- 9:38Speaker 5: We actually had somebody from Canada drive in overnight just
- 9:43Speaker 5: so they could ride on the hatfilm McCoy Dirt Bike
- 9:46Speaker 5: Trails and Tornado. That's just showing the investment that the
- 9:49Speaker 5: Knaw County Commission has made in the western part of
- 9:52Speaker 5: the county and also the eastern part of the county.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Really looking at low hanging fruit of what do we
- 9:57Speaker 5: have that's best here for economic development?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Well, tourism. I mean, look at all.
- 10:02Speaker 5: The shops and the restaurants that we have in the
- 10:04Speaker 5: urban life of Charleston, South Charleston, Saint Albans, but then
- 10:08Speaker 5: also just a couple miles out we've got backwoods, and
- 10:12Speaker 5: so having that opportunity that somebody could come here just
- 10:15Speaker 5: like we know, spend the day in Charleston enjoying the
- 10:17Speaker 5: shops and the restaurants and then driving twenty minutes to
- 10:21Speaker 5: go on the largest trail system in the country. Who
- 10:24Speaker 5: wouldn't want to come to West Virginia to do that?
- 10:26Speaker 5: And I think that's our job, is to bring those
- 10:28Speaker 5: people in to spend their hard earned money and continue
- 10:31Speaker 5: this investment into our infrastructure, in our economic development.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Before we let you go, don't want to ask you
- 10:37Speaker 3: about the announcement Tuesday up the airport, And of course
- 10:41Speaker 3: we had Commisial Selango was on the show a little
- 10:43Speaker 3: bit talking about that yesterday and other people. Now that's
- 10:45Speaker 3: a pretty big deal for Charleston, isn't it incredible?
- 10:48Speaker 5: I mean, five new flights on the flights that Breeze
- 10:51Speaker 5: has already put in. I think that that airport was
- 10:54Speaker 5: actually it was nineteen fifties when that airport was built.
- 10:56Speaker 5: And if we get these, when we get these five
- 10:59Speaker 5: new flights, that will be the most flights coming out
- 11:03Speaker 5: in and out of Jaeger Airport ever. We are growing
- 11:07Speaker 5: at an airport, you know. Actually after the event, I
- 11:09Speaker 5: was able to walk through the airport as we were exiting,
- 11:12Speaker 5: and Dave what I saw as a native Kennall County
- 11:15Speaker 5: and was I saw people packed in the seats, people
- 11:20Speaker 5: were walking through the owls with their bags. The TSA
- 11:23Speaker 5: line was a little backed up. I saw a vibrant,
- 11:27Speaker 5: well populated airport something growing up. Going to the airport,
- 11:32Speaker 5: you would see what day, twenty forty people at max.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Maybe there were hundreds of people utilizing the airport. And
- 11:38Speaker 5: a lot of that is because the investment that Breeze
- 11:40Speaker 5: has put in from the first agreement. So having this
- 11:43Speaker 5: second agreement and expanding on that is really an incredible opportunity. Again,
- 11:48Speaker 5: not just for economic development, not just for our locals
- 11:51Speaker 5: to be able to have access to go other places.
- 11:54Speaker 5: But something that's important to me is having the opportunity
- 11:56Speaker 5: for people who live outside of West Virginia from here
- 12:00Speaker 5: the opportunity to come home. You know, I've received a
- 12:02Speaker 5: text message that day and they said, hey, congratulations on
- 12:05Speaker 5: the announcement from Breeze. Now I have another option to
- 12:08Speaker 5: come home. That's a Native West Virginian. And so the
- 12:10Speaker 5: more opportunities we have for those Native West Virginians to
- 12:13Speaker 5: come home and see all the great things that we're
- 12:15Speaker 5: talking about, maybe they'll decide to come home and stay permanently.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's exactly what I was going to say. Or
- 12:21Speaker 3: maybe people that have no ties to the area that
- 12:23Speaker 3: want to come check it out. Let's close talking about
- 12:25Speaker 3: the ribbon cutting again. Give us the time and all
- 12:28Speaker 3: the information about metal Wood Saturday.
- 12:29Speaker 5: We're inviting everyone to come bring the kids Metalwood Park
- 12:33Speaker 5: in Tornado. It's going to be at ten am July twelfth,
- 12:36Speaker 5: this Saturday. Invite everyone and big announcement with that Governor
- 12:41Speaker 5: Patrick Morrissey will be there. We'll also be doing the
- 12:43Speaker 5: ribbon cutting for the Mountaineer Mile at Metalwood. So this
- 12:46Speaker 5: is just promoting healthy activities for everybody of all ages
- 12:49Speaker 5: to come out and to enjoy. And we'd love to
- 12:51Speaker 5: see everyone there ten am this Saturday, Metalwood in Tornado.
- 12:55Speaker 3: All right, mister Lance Wheel, it's always a pleasure to

- 16:51Speaker 10: He's probably about eighty three, and he began his sports
- 16:55Speaker 10: journalism career when he was twelve years old, so he
- 16:58Speaker 10: has seventy years in this and he's been the executive
- 17:02Speaker 10: director or the secretary treasurer of the Sports Writers Association
- 17:06Speaker 10: for forty years. So yeah, there's some great opportunity to
- 17:11Speaker 10: modernize things and to grow the organization. Rich Stevens is
- 17:16Speaker 10: one of the guys that's been instrumental in updating the
- 17:19Speaker 10: website WVSWA dot org. I mean, if you wonder like
- 17:25Speaker 10: who made all state in sports that we recognize all
- 17:29Speaker 10: state members. You can go back years and find that.
- 17:33Speaker 3: In settle some bets and arguments, No it wasn't that guy.
- 17:36Speaker 3: So what do you got from Stonewall Jackson nineteen seventy
- 17:39Speaker 3: six or something like that, Right, I'm sure it's on there.
- 17:41Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, they've they've been naming all state teams
- 17:43Speaker 10: since the thirties, so and the victory wards dinner's gone
- 17:47Speaker 10: on and you know, recognized people like Jerry West and
- 17:51Speaker 10: just this past may put Nick Saban into our West
- 17:55Speaker 10: Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. So it's kind of a
- 17:57Speaker 10: big deal and I'm honored to be a part of it.
- 18:00Speaker 3: And so I mean when you hear the term sports writer, now,
- 18:03Speaker 3: you know, people may think, well, I mean, how many
- 18:06Speaker 3: sports writers are left? But you can't just think about
- 18:08Speaker 3: sports writers as being newspaper because there are a lot
- 18:11Speaker 3: of different ways I say. People say that newspapers have
- 18:14Speaker 3: gone away, and they try to say this about you know,
- 18:16Speaker 3: traditional media. It's not gone anywhere. It's just the way
- 18:19Speaker 3: that people receive it is changed, That's right.
- 18:22Speaker 10: And that's what I'm talking about as far as modernizing it.
- 18:25Speaker 10: I mean, sports writers are still going to be important.
- 18:28Speaker 10: Print is kind of disappearing a little bit, but you
- 18:32Speaker 10: still have to write the online articles, and there's a
- 18:35Speaker 10: there's a lot of outlets out there that could be
- 18:37Speaker 10: a part of it.
- 18:38Speaker 3: The late Doug Scaff a very good friend of mine.
- 18:41Speaker 3: When I would have Scaff on the show, he would
- 18:44Speaker 3: frequently say, you know, because they talk about the newspapers
- 18:46Speaker 3: and the gazette mail and they say, you know, good zett.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I may be the only person that's actually has a
- 18:51Speaker 3: hard copy of the of the gazett mail. I have
- 18:52Speaker 3: one that right, you know, right here beside me right now. However,
- 18:55Speaker 3: the numbers online are great because that's where people. People
- 18:59Speaker 3: just consume new in different ways. I mean, they listened
- 19:02Speaker 3: to this radio station and all of our stations, but
- 19:06Speaker 3: you know, wv metronews dot com is pretty, is pretty
- 19:09Speaker 3: is the premier news outlet in the state of West Virginia.
- 19:12Speaker 3: You know, So there's just just different ways.
- 19:15Speaker 10: Yeah, Doug was a good friend of mine, and he
- 19:17Speaker 10: was a big fan of Wally's and Whimpy's. As a
- 19:19Speaker 10: matter of fact, we talked extensively about possible partnerships with
- 19:24Speaker 10: distribution with HD Media and Wally's and Whimpy's and I'm
- 19:28Speaker 10: sure that you know well with the West Virginia Sports
- 19:31Speaker 10: Writers Association, we'll still be in touch with the guys
- 19:34Speaker 10: that were at HD Media and and you know, it's
- 19:36Speaker 10: really sad that we lost him, but great supporter of
- 19:39Speaker 10: Wally's and Whimpy's and the Sports Writers Association.
- 19:42Speaker 3: And there's still a lot of great people there at
- 19:43Speaker 3: HD Media. I mean, Doug Scaffle was almost like the
- 19:45Speaker 3: face of the company. But i mean here's still a
- 19:47Speaker 3: lot of great people. Anthony Lewis, Rick Lord and you
- 19:50Speaker 3: know several other several other peoples that are there.
- 19:52Speaker 10: Both of those guys also big supporters and they come
- 19:55Speaker 10: out to Wally's and Whimpy's night that Buffalo Wild Wings
- 19:58Speaker 10: and supporters out there is gonna ask you we do
- 20:00Speaker 10: because you do that once a month.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Once the next one it's.
- 20:02Speaker 10: Next Thursday night Beflow Wild Wings at the Nitro Marketplace
- 20:07Speaker 10: off the Cross Lanes exit. And yeah, we're we always
- 20:10Speaker 10: have a great time.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Out there six to seven thirty six and lots of
- 20:14Speaker 3: prizes and all kinds of good stuff out there. All right,
- 20:17Speaker 3: So let's transition talk about yesterday got down in Texas
- 20:21Speaker 3: and Metro News midday. We actually broadcast some of rich
- 20:24Speaker 3: Rod's comments. We you know, you're doing live radio, man,
- 20:27Speaker 3: you never know whether it's going to work out. It
- 20:28Speaker 3: actually happened to work out perfectly that we were able
- 20:30Speaker 3: to get Rich Rod's comments. Of course, Tony Careedi was
- 20:33Speaker 3: on all of our shows yesterday. I know that that
- 20:35Speaker 3: you were paying attention to it. Your takeaway from from
- 20:38Speaker 3: the from the Big twelve press event and the return
- 20:40Speaker 3: of rod Man.
- 20:41Speaker 10: It's exciting. I'm with all the fans. I mean, I'm
- 20:44Speaker 10: not a super homer and supporter of WVU. I'm not
- 20:47Speaker 10: up there every weekend or anything like that. But I
- 20:50Speaker 10: think it's an exciting era. I mean, Rich Rod was
- 20:54Speaker 10: a lightning Rod for a lot of years, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 10: because a lot of people didn't like the way that
- 20:58Speaker 10: they left. But I think everybody he has kind of
- 21:01Speaker 10: forgotten that, and you know, I think it's going to
- 21:03Speaker 10: be exciting. He's going to be in a new Big twelve.
- 21:06Speaker 10: I mean, there's sixteen teams that you know, just a
- 21:10Speaker 10: few years ago, you couldn't have imagined that some of
- 21:12Speaker 10: the opponents that are going to be on their schedule.
- 21:15Speaker 10: So I know, one of the sources that I rely
- 21:18Speaker 10: on for preseason information, Phil Steele. His college football preview
- 21:24Speaker 10: has WVU ranked last in football, potentially because they lost
- 21:28Speaker 10: a lot and there's seventy new players, it's really hard
- 21:31Speaker 10: to gauge what's coming on. But they also expressed some
- 21:35Speaker 10: excitement about Rich Rod and the players he's going to
- 21:38Speaker 10: be bringing in the staff that he has, so you know,
- 21:41Speaker 10: it's just going to be really fun to see how
- 21:44Speaker 10: it shapes up.
- 21:45Speaker 3: I agree talking to Jim Workman, and now I get
- 21:47Speaker 3: to always just say, of Wally and Wempy's you're still
- 21:49Speaker 3: with wallyan Wempyes, yes, But I also have to say,
- 21:52Speaker 3: now executive director of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
- 21:56Speaker 3: But Dave Allen showing five D Live brought to you
- 21:57Speaker 3: impired by Bridge Valley offering custom to ten training to
- 22:00Speaker 3: supply a skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company. Visit
- 22:03Speaker 3: Bridge Valley dot E d U. And the thing about
- 22:06Speaker 3: about rena coach Rod returning to Morgantown and we all remember,
- 22:10Speaker 3: I mean, you know, he he he couldn't get anybody
- 22:13Speaker 3: to buy him a cup of coffee there towards the end,
- 22:16Speaker 3: and how he left and everything, and they still trashed
- 22:18Speaker 3: his name, and every so often when there was problems
- 22:21Speaker 3: with the program, you know, the mouth and enger fans
- 22:22Speaker 3: would get, you know, we'd go back and forth and
- 22:25Speaker 3: we need to bring Rod back, and people are like, heck, no,
- 22:27Speaker 3: we don't need to bring Rod back, never again. But
- 22:30Speaker 3: time heals all wounds and people. I think with the
- 22:34Speaker 3: last couple of coaches in Morgantown and this happens in
- 22:37Speaker 3: landscape all all over, I don't I just don't think that.
- 22:42Speaker 3: And I talked about this on Midday yesterday. Neil Brown
- 22:45Speaker 3: was a very very nice guy and I had a
- 22:47Speaker 3: couple of interactions with them. Professional guy. Think he was
- 22:50Speaker 3: probably in over his head. And Holgerson, I'm I'm just
- 22:54Speaker 3: gonna leave that alone, okay. So and if you've ever
- 22:57Speaker 3: had any conversations with him, you'll you'll know what I'm
- 23:00Speaker 3: all right. But but I just don't know that they
- 23:02Speaker 3: got WVU. And one of the things I love about
- 23:07Speaker 3: WVU and Marshall, you know, got to get a plug
- 23:11Speaker 3: in for the Alma mater, is that they're bringing in
- 23:13Speaker 3: people now that had these programs that get it. Tony Gibson,
- 23:16Speaker 3: the new Marshall football coach. He gets Marshall he was,
- 23:20Speaker 3: of course coach WVU and he's a Boom county. And
- 23:23Speaker 3: he gets Corny Jackson the basketball coach. He gets it
- 23:25Speaker 3: because he played at Marshall. Rich Rod the same thing,
- 23:28Speaker 3: and uh and and there and that there is an
- 23:31Speaker 3: excitement about this program right now because I think a
- 23:35Speaker 3: lot of Mountaineer fans are just saying, we got one
- 23:39Speaker 3: of ours in here now.
- 23:40Speaker 10: Well, it's a big thing that rich Rod talked about
- 23:42Speaker 10: yesterday was building that culture and you really can't understand
- 23:46Speaker 10: it unless you've been a part of it. So another
- 23:49Speaker 10: point that people need to recognize is when rich Rod
- 23:53Speaker 10: was there seventeen years ago, they were in the Big East.
- 23:56Speaker 10: That was a conference that was kind of folding a
- 23:58Speaker 10: little bit, and he was approaching the WVU administration about
- 24:04Speaker 10: upgrading the facilities, which was a legit concern if you
- 24:08Speaker 10: wanted to get to where they want to go. And
- 24:10Speaker 10: while he's back now with fifty million dollars in improvements
- 24:14Speaker 10: in facilities. So it's a whole new game for him
- 24:17Speaker 10: and WVU right now. And I've heard people say, well,
- 24:20Speaker 10: how's he going to relate to the modern player? It's
- 24:22Speaker 10: not like he's been, you know, working at BUCkies. We
- 24:25Speaker 10: had to reference the bucket. It's not like he's been
- 24:26Speaker 10: he's been in he's been coaching Jacksonville State in Arizona,
- 24:29Speaker 10: and he's been he's been around. It's not like he's
- 24:31Speaker 10: been sitting on the couch for the last several years, right.
- 24:34Speaker 10: And I think to some degree, as you kind of
- 24:36Speaker 10: alluded to earlier, he's been humbled a little bit because
- 24:39Speaker 10: I remember about ten twelve years ago when he was
- 24:42Speaker 10: in between jobs. He was a caddying at the Greenboro Classic.
- 24:47Speaker 10: And he not not because he had a great need to,
- 24:50Speaker 10: you know, make a buck, but he was down there
- 24:53Speaker 10: and I talked to him, he.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Was he was great.
- 24:56Speaker 11: Yeah, you know.
- 24:57Speaker 10: So he's been at Michigan, of course, he's been at Arizona,
- 25:00Speaker 10: he's been at Jacksonville State. I think he is personally
- 25:03Speaker 10: ready for this challenge as well as WVU.
- 25:06Speaker 3: We've had a text here it says, at the next
- 25:08Speaker 3: two seasons aren't what everyone expected. How long till those
- 25:10Speaker 3: same praisers start calling for rich Rod to be fired
- 25:13Speaker 3: and it'll happen. That's a fair question.
- 25:15Speaker 10: But you know, college football at that level is really
- 25:21Speaker 10: transitional now, because you can unload I mean, marshall the
- 25:24Speaker 10: same way. They had to fifty sixty guys new guys
- 25:28Speaker 10: this year because twenty five to thirty of them went.
- 25:30Speaker 3: With Charles, what's a number for WVU?
- 25:33Speaker 2: Is it like?
- 25:33Speaker 3: And he said it's about seventy seventy that's yeah. And
- 25:36Speaker 3: the pressor he said about seventy new players.
- 25:39Speaker 10: Which is a little concerning, of course, but when you
- 25:41Speaker 10: also factor in that many of them did not participate
- 25:44Speaker 10: in the spring drills are just coming in this summer.
- 25:48Speaker 10: I mean, as he talked about yesterday, it's going to
- 25:51Speaker 10: be a very important fall camp starting in you know,
- 25:54Speaker 10: the end of July, beginning of August to evaluate these players.
- 25:58Speaker 3: And this is not unique to WV. I mean every
- 26:00Speaker 3: every college program. I mean every year it's like it's
- 26:05Speaker 3: so and I'm a big a college sports guy. I
- 26:07Speaker 3: know you are too, but it's so hard to get
- 26:10Speaker 3: to get fired up because you don't know the players.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's much more than the pro sports.
- 26:15Speaker 3: I mean, you know pro sports, you have a couple
- 26:17Speaker 3: of free agents here are there. We talk about seventy
- 26:19Speaker 3: new people, and it's probably going to be the same
- 26:21Speaker 3: way next season for for universities around the around the nation.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Probably not seventy next year, but you know, he said,
- 26:28Speaker 3: probably it's going to be about twenty five to thirty
- 26:30Speaker 3: at least an every good point. Yeah, yeah, I mean,
- 26:33Speaker 3: and this is just where college athletics is right now.
- 26:35Speaker 3: And then we can talk about that, you know, a
- 26:36Speaker 3: whole other time with NIL and everything like that and this,
- 26:39Speaker 3: and people are I think a lot of these coaches
- 26:41Speaker 3: and administrators are having to make it up as they
- 26:44Speaker 3: go because there is no there's no playbook, and it's
- 26:47Speaker 3: the way for the first couple of years. It's been
- 26:49Speaker 3: a wild wild West out there, Jim, and they've got
- 26:51Speaker 3: to try to figure this thing out because it's not
- 26:54Speaker 3: going away. I mean, it's here that you can't you don't.
- 26:57Speaker 3: You don't give eighteen year nineteen year old kids a
- 26:59Speaker 3: million bucks and suddenly take it away. NIL is not
- 27:01Speaker 3: going anywhere. That's right, That's right.
- 27:03Speaker 10: It's gonna be a fun time to to be there,
- 27:05Speaker 10: to watch on TV, to listen on the radio, to
- 27:08Speaker 10: cover West Virginia sports, even basketball. You know, every everything
- 27:13Speaker 10: is new with basketball as well, So it's it's gonna
- 27:16Speaker 10: be a fun time.
- 27:16Speaker 3: In Morgan's own tech says rich Rod is a wonderful
- 27:19Speaker 3: choice for a head football coach. I'm looking forward to
- 27:21Speaker 3: the next five years. I want to go back to
- 27:23Speaker 3: what the other texture said, though, I mean, everybody, everything's
- 27:27Speaker 3: at a fever pitch right now. Everybody seems to be
- 27:29Speaker 3: I mean I had a couple of texts to the
- 27:32Speaker 3: Midday Show yesterday people that weren't happy about it, and
- 27:35Speaker 3: you've heard it as well in your in your travels
- 27:37Speaker 3: and your writings. Whenever people who said that they weren't
- 27:39Speaker 3: happy about it, the majority of Mountain their fans, I
- 27:41Speaker 3: think safe to say, are happy about it. But if
- 27:45Speaker 3: you if you struggle, you know this season and this
- 27:47Speaker 3: season could very well be a bit of a struggle
- 27:51Speaker 3: for the Mountaineers. How long into like that Textra said,
- 27:56Speaker 3: how long if that happens? And I hope it doesn't,
- 27:59Speaker 3: but how but how long until people say, well, maybe
- 28:01Speaker 3: we didn't do the right thing.
- 28:02Speaker 10: Well, I think West Virginia is in a not in
- 28:05Speaker 10: a position to just fire somebody and continue to pay them,
- 28:09Speaker 10: you know, according to their contract, and bring somebody in
- 28:12Speaker 10: just for the sake of having a new face. So
- 28:14Speaker 10: I think you know it's they're not going to be
- 28:16Speaker 10: at the level of an Ohio State or a Michigan
- 28:19Speaker 10: or a usc where they can just I'm unhappy. Let's
- 28:23Speaker 10: change keep paying the guy, you know, like an Alabama could,
- 28:26Speaker 10: so he'll have a little longer leash, right, you know,
- 28:30Speaker 10: he'll have at least two or three years. And I
- 28:33Speaker 10: wouldn't expect them to make a change at least you know,
- 28:37Speaker 10: he has four years under his belt.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean if it fall falls apart, yeah, we
- 28:41Speaker 3: and we don't want to put a little you know,
- 28:43Speaker 3: negative vibes out there. We're hoping that that's not what happens.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Another thing I like, we'll close with this, that I
- 28:48Speaker 3: really like too, is that he's brought a lot of
- 28:51Speaker 3: familiar faces back into Morgantown and and a lot of
- 28:55Speaker 3: I had we had joswiac on the show yesterday, who's
- 28:57Speaker 3: one of my all time favorite humans there, I would
- 28:58Speaker 3: have Brian Joswiak on the air every day to talk
- 29:00Speaker 3: about something I don't know. But I got Joe's weak
- 29:03Speaker 3: off the golf course yesterday to talk to me and
- 29:05Speaker 3: Amanda on the show yesterday, and I haven't. And the
- 29:08Speaker 3: big guy is always fired. He gets fired up going
- 29:10Speaker 3: to Wendy's okay, I mean, but but he has got
- 29:12Speaker 3: a fight. He was out with the Aaron Beasley's playing
- 29:14Speaker 3: golf with it with Beasley yesterday and he was just
- 29:18Speaker 3: I mean bouncing off the walls about you know, about
- 29:21Speaker 3: about rich Rod coming back, and he said that he
- 29:24Speaker 3: felt that a lot of the old Mountaineers may not
- 29:26Speaker 3: have been respected as much under previous administrations. And uh,
- 29:31Speaker 3: rich Rod wants to bring those guys back into the fold.
- 29:33Speaker 3: He wants to bring already brought you know, some assistants
- 29:36Speaker 3: that are going to be helping out, Pat White and
- 29:37Speaker 3: others that are going to be there. So it's going
- 29:39Speaker 3: to be an exciting, exciting time.
- 29:41Speaker 10: Well, those type of connections has really helped West Virginia
- 29:45Speaker 10: become more nationally known because when you have guys like
- 29:48Speaker 10: Pat McAfee and Pac Man that have those national platforms
- 29:51Speaker 10: talking about West Virginia football in the off season, that's
- 29:55Speaker 10: going to help raise the profile of Mountaineers sports across
- 29:58Speaker 10: the country.
- 29:58Speaker 3: All Right, we'll have back on. Of course, as we
- 30:01Speaker 3: get in it closer to football season. It cannot come
- 30:03Speaker 3: soon enough. I'm with you, how how many quarterbacks do
- 30:06Speaker 3: your Browns have now? Like twenty seven. They have four,
- 30:09Speaker 3: so yeah, but do they have one?
- 30:12Speaker 12: Right?
- 30:12Speaker 3: Well, the old saying in the NFL was, if you
- 30:14Speaker 3: have two quarterbacks, you don't have a quarterback.
- 30:16Speaker 6: There you go.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Jim Workman, the executive director of the Westernrginion Sports Writers
- 30:20Speaker 3: Association and the guy behind Wally and Whimpy's, the state's

- 34:09Speaker 12: All right, I have my first assistant, Adam Petrie with
- 34:12Speaker 12: me this morning.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Okay, Adam, welcome to the show. Nice to meet you, sir,
- 34:15Speaker 3: Nice to meet you to day. Thanks having Yeah, let
- 34:17Speaker 3: me turn that microphone. I need you turn that microphone
- 34:19Speaker 3: in front of you. There you go, perfect right there,
- 34:21Speaker 3: right there, all right, A good host would have already
- 34:24Speaker 3: set that up, you know, meaning me.
- 34:28Speaker 13: So this.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Story kind of broke and we've got a story post
- 34:32Speaker 3: about WV Metronews dot com. A new trial dates been
- 34:35Speaker 3: said in the Gavin Smith trial. He was convicted of
- 34:37Speaker 3: killing four people and his family back in twenty twenty.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Gifts the background on this case.
- 34:42Speaker 12: You know, back in twenty twenty when this case originated,
- 34:46Speaker 12: my office prepared for trial and there were two co defendants,
- 34:51Speaker 12: one code defendant, took completely the other wound up going
- 34:55Speaker 12: to trial. There were some issues with that. The Supreme
- 34:58Speaker 12: Court overturned the verdict in that trial and has remanded
- 35:01Speaker 12: that case for a new trial. And that's where mister
- 35:05Speaker 12: Petrie and myself got involved.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's aggurate, Dave.
- 35:10Speaker 15: This case started, I believe, right after COVID started, and
- 35:15Speaker 15: it went through the court system and it's finally made
- 35:16Speaker 15: its way back to Circle Court here in Kendal County.
- 35:19Speaker 3: And remind people the whole story here with that case.
- 35:24Speaker 12: You know, I'm pretty limited in terms of factually what
- 35:26Speaker 12: I'm able.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Okay, sorry, well you just tell me what you're comfortable with.
- 35:29Speaker 12: What I can tell you is basically what is already
- 35:31Speaker 12: public knowledge, and that is the defendant, Gavin Smith, is
- 35:35Speaker 12: alleged to have killed his mother, his step father, and
- 35:39Speaker 12: his two siblings. That occurred in the Elkview area of
- 35:43Speaker 12: Kannall County again back in twenty twenty and again you know,
- 35:48Speaker 12: we go through the court process and no prosecutor ever
- 35:51Speaker 12: wants to hear well, the Supreme Court has remained a
- 35:54Speaker 12: case and you have to start all over. And so
- 35:58Speaker 12: mister Petrick and I are just now really getting involved
- 36:01Speaker 12: in this because he and I did not handle the case.
- 36:03Speaker 12: Initially it was two prosecutors who no longer work at
- 36:05Speaker 12: the office, and so now we are learning brand new
- 36:09Speaker 12: what this case is about.
- 36:10Speaker 3: And so what goes into that learning process for you,
- 36:13Speaker 3: mister Petrie.
- 36:15Speaker 15: Just getting involved in this case kind of having to
- 36:18Speaker 15: start at ground zero. Obviously I was at the office
- 36:21Speaker 15: from the case from its inception, but I didn't work
- 36:23Speaker 15: on this case, so kind of getting into it as
- 36:25Speaker 15: if it had just started, and start looking at whenness statements,
- 36:30Speaker 15: looking at the files, reading transcripts, and familiarizing ourselves with
- 36:33Speaker 15: the case and the law in this in particular.
- 36:35Speaker 3: And this was a very high profile case because of
- 36:39Speaker 3: how horrific it was.
- 36:40Speaker 12: Prosecutor absolutely it is. It's a horrible situation. You know,
- 36:45Speaker 12: when you have any sort of familial homicide, it there's
- 36:50Speaker 12: no good outcome, you know, no matter what. This family
- 36:55Speaker 12: has lost so much, so much, and that's the thing
- 37:00Speaker 12: that we can never give them, give back to them.
- 37:02Speaker 12: We can't bring their loved ones back, and we also
- 37:06Speaker 12: can't let the behaviors of another loved one go unpunished.
- 37:12Speaker 12: And so it puts the family in a very very
- 37:15Speaker 12: difficult situation. My heart goes out to them to have
- 37:18Speaker 12: to relive this all over again. But as mister Petrie said,
- 37:22Speaker 12: we are, you know, diving in feet first. We've got
- 37:26Speaker 12: a lot of work to do, and we've already begun
- 37:29Speaker 12: that work and we're getting ready to, you know, hopefully
- 37:33Speaker 12: secure a verdict that brings this families again some semblance
- 37:37Speaker 12: of justice.
- 37:38Speaker 3: So nine forty five at day Vallance showing five eighty
- 37:41Speaker 3: live is brought to you part by Fresh Air Filters

- 37:47Speaker 3: four zero one one zero four or visit fresh Air
- 37:50Speaker 3: Filters dot us because everyone deserves fresh air. Anytime you
- 37:53Speaker 3: have a case that both of you know this that
- 37:58Speaker 3: is so high profile because of the you know, the
- 38:02Speaker 3: the as you said, anytime you're dealing with families, it's
- 38:05Speaker 3: always a tragedy and at the end of the day,
- 38:07Speaker 3: regardless of what happens, there're still family members that are
- 38:10Speaker 3: not are not there anymore for Christmases and gathering so
- 38:13Speaker 3: on and so forth. But as prosecutors, when you have
- 38:19Speaker 3: a case like this that is so out there in
- 38:21Speaker 3: the public and now we're in the world of social
- 38:23Speaker 3: media where everybody weighs in on every news story and
- 38:25Speaker 3: so on, or the personal pages they write their own stories, whatever,
- 38:29Speaker 3: how much more difficult is a case like that? That is,
- 38:32Speaker 3: I know you take every case in your office seriously,
- 38:34Speaker 3: obviously in your entire office does. But how much more
- 38:36Speaker 3: difficult is it when you have a case that is
- 38:40Speaker 3: this high profile.
- 38:41Speaker 12: It becomes difficult in the aspect of being able to
- 38:45Speaker 12: pick a fresh jury. And it also becomes difficult because
- 38:51Speaker 12: a lot of members of the public don't fully understand
- 38:54Speaker 12: the court system and how it operates.
- 38:57Speaker 3: And what we really do.
- 38:59Speaker 12: And so I would urge people from the public, not
- 39:02Speaker 12: just this case, but any case. If you don't know
- 39:05Speaker 12: what we do, and you're out there you're criticizing or
- 39:09Speaker 12: you're commending even the work that we do, please make
- 39:12Speaker 12: sure you fully understand what that is. Come to court,
- 39:14Speaker 12: watch us track cases, watch us have hearings, because it
- 39:18Speaker 12: doesn't make it much more difficult when we have that
- 39:22Speaker 12: uphill battle of you know, the public perception that we
- 39:26Speaker 12: have to try to either tamper or maybe excel to.
- 39:32Speaker 3: And judges face this as you well know, all the time,
- 39:35Speaker 3: because you'll hear a sentencing that's happened, and there's guidelines.
- 39:41Speaker 3: You know, you can't break the law. And I you know, judges,
- 39:44Speaker 3: this happens to you all the time, you know, very
- 39:46Speaker 3: similar situations. They're like, how did this guy or or
- 39:48Speaker 3: girl only get this? Well, that's what the sentencing requirements are.
- 39:51Speaker 11: To lass.
- 39:51Speaker 3: You don't like it, change the law or talk to
- 39:53Speaker 3: your legislators there. What's the time frame here on this
- 39:56Speaker 3: as we move forward?
- 40:00Speaker 12: We have a trial date on November seventeenth and a
- 40:04Speaker 12: pre trial date of November sixth, so we've got a
- 40:07Speaker 12: few months.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Okay. We all have to keep us posted as best
- 40:10Speaker 3: you can. And I do appreciate you coming in. As
- 40:13Speaker 3: I said, we had the story posted about and I
- 40:15Speaker 3: reached out to you last night kind of a not
- 40:17Speaker 3: exactly last minute, but sort of to come in. And
- 40:20Speaker 3: I appreciate you coming in. Anything else side of your office,
- 40:23Speaker 3: away from this case you want to want to talk about.
- 40:25Speaker 12: You know, we're working hard. We have a great group
- 40:28Speaker 12: of people who are really ambitious, They really care about
- 40:32Speaker 12: the work they're doing, and they really want to do
- 40:35Speaker 12: the right thing. And I think getting the right people
- 40:37Speaker 12: in the right places who have that mindset is going
- 40:40Speaker 12: to be the reason my office six seeds.
- 40:43Speaker 3: All right, well, we appreciate you both taking time out

- 45:01Speaker 3: he is so So it's going away, Yes, yes it is.
- 45:06Speaker 19: Unfortunately, after almost thirty years, it's going away.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Why no, Why is it going away?
- 45:12Speaker 19: Those are some hard questions I think that that need
- 45:15Speaker 19: to be answered. I think, you know, I'm not in
- 45:18Speaker 19: the guts of the YWCA, and you know I'm not
- 45:21Speaker 19: there seeing and hearing things. I do know that the
- 45:26Speaker 19: magnitude of the economy, how we bring money to our
- 45:30Speaker 19: community with Girls Night Out, is going to deplete. You know,
- 45:34Speaker 19: we have over a thousand women that attend this event. Now,
- 45:38Speaker 19: you know we started out with eighty when I began
- 45:40Speaker 19: this many many moons ago, even on board since day one, right, well,
- 45:44Speaker 19: actually I started about seven years after it started. That's
- 45:47Speaker 19: how they started.
- 45:48Speaker 3: We'll call it day two.
- 45:49Speaker 19: Then let's do day two.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Let's do day two.
- 45:51Speaker 19: Yes, yes, this is close to I'm rolling up on
- 45:55Speaker 19: twenty four years being involved total, and I've seen it
- 45:59Speaker 19: grow from infancy to adulthood. And you know, our goal
- 46:03Speaker 19: from the beginning at being at Sunrise Museum aka Farmer
- 46:06Speaker 19: Cline Campbell. We started there, we had an event eighty
- 46:10Speaker 19: was at my first event, I believe, and our goal after.
- 46:14Speaker 3: That year was to grow.
- 46:15Speaker 19: You know, hey, let's help more women, let's help more families,
- 46:19Speaker 19: let's help more children get out of these difficult situations.
- 46:23Speaker 19: And so immediately the whole committee was on board with that,
- 46:27Speaker 19: including the YWCA. So growing was the only choice to
- 46:31Speaker 19: help more people. And that's where we became larger and
- 46:35Speaker 19: larger every year, one hundred, two hundred, three hundred people,
- 46:38Speaker 19: four hundred five hundred women, and then eventually we had
- 46:41Speaker 19: sixteen hundred women coming to our event at the Cultural Center.
- 46:45Speaker 19: So it's a lot of economy revenue that we provided
- 46:49Speaker 19: for the community. You know, the hotels were booked, the
- 46:52Speaker 19: dresses were bought, the nails were done, the hair was done.
- 46:56Speaker 19: The women that couldn't afford to come, they could volunteer
- 46:58Speaker 19: with us and not have to buy that ticket. I
- 47:01Speaker 19: have friends from out of state that saved their money
- 47:03Speaker 19: every year to come to this event to support the event.
- 47:07Speaker 19: Domestic balance touches everyone. It doesn't have a color profile,
- 47:12Speaker 19: it doesn't have an economic profile. It hits every family.
- 47:17Speaker 19: Everyone that is in West Virginia knows. It's a very
- 47:21Speaker 19: prominent problem. And it was something that was swept under
- 47:24Speaker 19: the rug, and we brought it out and we said, hey,
- 47:27Speaker 19: we need help, we need support. And then that's when
- 47:29Speaker 19: the tc Energies of the world and the Toyotas of
- 47:32Speaker 19: the world, everyone came and helped us and supported us
- 47:35Speaker 19: and helped us grow to where we were at the
- 47:36Speaker 19: municipal Auditorium and to mention then the Colosseum. Those ladies
- 47:41Speaker 19: there are so kind to us. They gave us so
- 47:43Speaker 19: many extras. You know, they let us bring in food vendors,
- 47:46Speaker 19: they let us do all the things to make more money.
- 47:49Speaker 19: And you know, the Colosseum needs to be commended for
- 47:51Speaker 19: all of their help these last seven eight years of
- 47:54Speaker 19: allowing us to be in that Colisseum to raise money
- 47:56Speaker 19: for domestic violence. So your answer is better than mind, Dave.
- 48:00Speaker 19: I don't know why it's leaving. It's and you know
- 48:02Speaker 19: it's well.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I mean, you talked about the economy a little bit, Yeah,
- 48:05Speaker 3: said that, you know that may have had something how
- 48:08Speaker 3: was Do you know how the decision was arrived upon?
- 48:12Speaker 19: I can't answer that question. I know that we were
- 48:14Speaker 19: planning it up until March of this year. We were
- 48:17Speaker 19: looking at possibly other venues to save some money. We
- 48:22Speaker 19: were looking at you see, other things like that, and
- 48:25Speaker 19: I was open minded to that because I didn't want
- 48:27Speaker 19: this wonderful event to go away. And then probably the
- 48:32Speaker 19: end of March, we had an email sent to all
- 48:34Speaker 19: of us saying we will not be having Girls' Night
- 48:37Speaker 19: out anymore.
- 48:39Speaker 3: I mean like that came from the people in at
- 48:41Speaker 3: y W, the leadership at y W. And by the way,
- 48:44Speaker 3: I didn't want to appear I'm making this all one sided.
- 48:47Speaker 3: If the leadership and the folks, and why that would
- 48:49Speaker 3: you say you want to come on board or need
- 48:50Speaker 3: to come on air? I should say and talk about
- 48:52Speaker 3: they're more than welcome to you. At any given time.
- 48:55Speaker 3: If you had to put a ballpark a ballpark, figure
- 48:58Speaker 3: on how much money you were able to raise in
- 49:00Speaker 3: that thirty years or so, how what would it be?
- 49:04Speaker 19: Oh my goodness, I will tell you just off the cuff.
- 49:10Speaker 19: Each event, especially at the municipal the coliseum, actually the
- 49:14Speaker 19: Charleston Coliseum, we were raising between four and five hundred
- 49:19Speaker 19: thousand a year, and that grew over the years. Of course,
- 49:23Speaker 19: I would say our lifetime ten fifteen million at least
- 49:28Speaker 19: incredible at least And you know that's including in kind donations,
- 49:31Speaker 19: you know, all the kind restaurants donating food, all the
- 49:34Speaker 19: distributors donating you know, beverages, Coca Cola, Red Bull, Budweiser,
- 49:40Speaker 19: all the things. Mike Folio, you know, the Doug Scaffs
- 49:42Speaker 19: of the world coming and helping and volunteering and getting
- 49:45Speaker 19: ice and schlepping around in the heat. Everyone has been
- 49:49Speaker 19: touched in this community with Girls' Night Out everyone.
- 49:52Speaker 3: And so is there a possibility though that those volunteers
- 49:55Speaker 3: like yourself and other people that you have smaller events.
- 49:58Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I think that's.
- 49:59Speaker 19: The vision of YW from what I'm seeing and and
- 50:03Speaker 19: I've met with them about it. They want to start
- 50:06Speaker 19: small again and go back to our roots. But it's
- 50:10Speaker 19: kind of hard to put you know, closed Pandora's box.
- 50:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't put the ketchup back in the jar
- 50:16Speaker 3: or the bottle.
- 50:17Speaker 19: As they say, yeah, yeah, yeah, we grew to where
- 50:20Speaker 19: we were for a reason. It's it's kind of reminds
- 50:22Speaker 19: me of you know, regatta. What if we started small
- 50:25Speaker 19: again with regatta, and start small and rented out a
- 50:28Speaker 19: little room for five hundred people for regatta. It's just
- 50:31Speaker 19: it's just impossible to do such a magnitude of an
- 50:34Speaker 19: event and put it back in a box.
- 50:36Speaker 3: Well, it's unfortunate. And again I don't pretend to know
- 50:39Speaker 3: all the things behind the scenes, and I would love
- 50:41Speaker 3: to have the folks from the YWCA to come on
- 50:42Speaker 3: the show to talk about it at any point. But
- 50:45Speaker 3: it is unfortunate because it's one of those it's one
- 50:47Speaker 3: of the Charleston events. I mean every year, you know,
- 50:50Speaker 3: and I've been doing this show for five years and
- 50:52Speaker 3: and so it's like every year, you know, you got Foma,
- 50:56Speaker 3: the Dome, You've got Regatta. As you said, you've got
- 50:59Speaker 3: to all these different events that are just and Girls'
- 51:02Speaker 3: Night Out was right there as part of it.
- 51:04Speaker 19: Oh yeah, it was a staple summer event for sure.
- 51:06Speaker 19: You know, we planned it around the school season so
- 51:09Speaker 19: the moms could come and attend and not be stressed out.
- 51:11Speaker 19: And you know, we properly planned everything properly, and it
- 51:15Speaker 19: was a party with a purpose. It never got out
- 51:17Speaker 19: of control. It was always just a really good time
- 51:20Speaker 19: for all the girls to get together, to bring their
- 51:23Speaker 19: their grandmothers, their sisters, their aunts.
- 51:26Speaker 8: You know.
- 51:26Speaker 19: It was just a great event for women to have camaraderie,
- 51:30Speaker 19: you know, to come together for a great benefit. And
- 51:32Speaker 19: this benefit is needed in our area, especially being rule.
- 51:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, let me get this in here. Vaccines
- 51:39Speaker 3: are your best protect again severe disease from fluid COVID
- 51:41Speaker 3: nineteen if you're sixty five. For older risk less, do
- 51:43Speaker 3: more with the season's vaccines. Get started. Vaccines not GOV
- 51:46Speaker 3: paid for, but they used to wornment with Health and
- 51:47Speaker 3: Human Services, Sandy. As we close, I'm going to just
- 51:50Speaker 3: give you an opportunity and mean miracles happen, you know,
- 51:53Speaker 3: maybe something you know, because there's a lot I was
- 51:55Speaker 3: reading a whole lot of chatter on social media and
- 51:58Speaker 3: on and on television news. That's why I reached out
- 52:00Speaker 3: to you last night about coming in to day. What
- 52:03Speaker 3: would you say? And I'll give you the final seconds.
- 52:06Speaker 3: I mean, just to thank people for the wonderful years
- 52:09Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 52:10Speaker 19: Thanking all the sponsors, all the ladies that bought tickets,
- 52:14Speaker 19: all the gentlemen that bought the tickets for their ladies,
- 52:16Speaker 19: all the tc. Energies into toyotas, all of the people
- 52:20Speaker 19: that donated and were sponsors through the years, especially the team,
- 52:24Speaker 19: the wonderful team at the WHITEWCA. We could not have
- 52:27Speaker 19: done this over the years without them and the teamwork
- 52:30Speaker 19: and the camaraderie and them working fifty sixty eighty hours
- 52:33Speaker 19: a week, you know, without anyone knowing what they were doing.
- 52:37Speaker 19: You know, everyone worked so hard at this and it
- 52:39Speaker 19: was definitely a labor of love. Definitely a labor of love,
- 52:43Speaker 19: and we appreciate everybody and Dave, thank you so much
- 52:45Speaker 19: for being a huge supporting guests.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Well hopefully you know again, I'm always one that wants
- 52:50Speaker 3: to hold out hope.
- 52:51Speaker 19: Yes, absolutely absolutely stay a little prayer tonight for Gino everybody.
- 52:55Speaker 3: All right, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot,
