- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening podcast. You Can't

- 0:26Speaker 1: app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor where
- 0:29Speaker 1: you stand with on X. While Janice's attendance record has
- 0:38Speaker 1: been exceptionally poor of late, he's here with us in
- 0:44Speaker 1: the studio, but he's uh, he's unable to speak up
- 0:48Speaker 1: right now because he's reading about he's preparing a little
- 0:51Speaker 1: school report on a on a character named Hobo. He's
- 0:57Speaker 1: preparing a little school he's going to deliver it to us,
- 1:00Speaker 1: the equivalent of when your seventh grader does a links
- 1:03Speaker 1: report and yeah, yeah, he's gonna it might be grade.
- 1:10Speaker 1: He's gearing up to prepare us a little report on
- 1:13Speaker 1: links that did did what's his name? Holdo are the
- 1:16Speaker 1: links did an extraordinary little thing? Uh So that's that's
- 1:20Speaker 1: why he's being quiet right now. And even you're righty
- 1:22Speaker 1: to deliver your report to the to the to the audience,
- 1:26Speaker 1: speak up, uh now. Another piece of housekeeping we have
- 1:32Speaker 1: with us, Miles Nolt and Joel Surmelli and they have
- 1:36Speaker 1: like an announcement. We do, but you have a decision
- 1:39Speaker 1: to make. Um, Joe's not with us, he's over in Jersey,
- 1:44Speaker 1: Eastern p A. But close enough, Joysy. Uh home, you're
- 1:51Speaker 1: not at your house? No, I'm at my house. I'm
- 1:54Speaker 1: a guy. But moved across the river for the tax break.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So so you're you can look over at it. Yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 1: pretty much. I I moved one step closer to America,
- 2:05Speaker 1: as I like to say. So, uh um, Pennsylvania is
- 2:09Speaker 1: better on the tax man. There is not as vicious.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, It's like it's like half get more house
- 2:16Speaker 1: for your money and pay half the taxes by jumping
- 2:18Speaker 1: the river. Does it kind of hurt your soul though,
- 2:21Speaker 1: to have to claim p A because for as much
- 2:23Speaker 1: as you love that Jersey, identity is lost there. Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I mean I still just go with them from Jersey.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, but if you live here, man,
- 2:32Speaker 1: you leave that close, you're kind of crazy to to
- 2:35Speaker 1: not save the money and hop the river. Uh the river?
- 2:39Speaker 1: You you can fish that river. I remember when Nice
- 2:41Speaker 1: of fish the Delaware at the Pennsylvania New York line.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I always thought that it was interesting that they allowed
- 2:50Speaker 1: you to fish the river with either state's license, and
- 2:54Speaker 1: they went above and beyond that and made this sort
- 2:57Speaker 1: of simplified rules so that you didn't have that confusion
- 3:02Speaker 1: of like you could keep on this bank of the river,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you're allowed to keep like four large mouth bass or whatever.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Hell right, but on this side of the river it's not.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Or the season's open over here, but it's not open here.
- 3:16Speaker 1: We still live on the St. Mary's River, which is
- 3:18Speaker 1: between Michigan and Ontario. Holy sh it, the rules were
- 3:23Speaker 1: vastly like everything was different. Oh yeah, and it was
- 3:27Speaker 1: like this very arbitrary seeming line where what side of
- 3:31Speaker 1: the river you were on everything changed, like the real
- 3:35Speaker 1: major differences in REGs. It seems just like opening the
- 3:39Speaker 1: door for people to take advantage of whatever reggs they
- 3:42Speaker 1: want to abide. Yeah, there was a situation where some
- 3:45Speaker 1: were sorry, remember I feel like we reported on this.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Um Joe might remember. You might remember Miles that was
- 3:53Speaker 1: a tournament bass angler fishing somewhere on the Mississippi had
- 4:00Speaker 1: inadvertently crossed and into like waters where you weren't allowed
- 4:06Speaker 1: to high grade fish or something like that. Yeah, it
- 4:09Speaker 1: was Brandon Palink that had happened to and he was
- 4:12Speaker 1: he was like totally killing everybody, and uh, it was
- 4:16Speaker 1: a technicality. He didn't realize he was doing something wrong.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And I mean he manned up about it, he owned
- 4:22Speaker 1: up to it. But he would have stomped that tournament
- 4:24Speaker 1: didn't have something worth retaining. He like straight into the
- 4:26Speaker 1: state's waters where you couldn't retain. Yeah, you weren't supposed
- 4:31Speaker 1: to call you weren't supposed to have fish in your live. Well,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I forget exactly. So is a lot of years ago.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I forget exactly what it was. He's on the wrong
- 4:37Speaker 1: side of some islands somewhere and in yep. So anyways,
- 4:42Speaker 1: I always thought it was cool that New York of
- 4:44Speaker 1: Pennsylvania were like, hey, you got your rules, we got
- 4:46Speaker 1: our rules, but on this shared water, let's just make
- 4:49Speaker 1: it that everybody's one license either side. Anywhere in the
- 4:54Speaker 1: river you have one license. And then we agree that
- 4:57Speaker 1: the river has its its rags and the river as rags,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and we don't bring geopolitics into it in such a
- 5:03Speaker 1: confusing fashion. Well it's funny though, because up north that's
- 5:07Speaker 1: that's completely accurate, and I think all the legs are shared.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But I live actually on the title section. So down here,
- 5:13Speaker 1: like your license, you can access the river from either side,
- 5:17Speaker 1: launch from either side, fish either bank. But like with
- 5:19Speaker 1: the migratory fish stripers in particular, Jersey guys can't keep anything.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Pennsylvania guys can actually keep one out of the river,
- 5:27Speaker 1: but it all depends on which side you launch on,
- 5:29Speaker 1: so you can't be sneaky about it. But with the
- 5:32Speaker 1: migratory fish on the southern end, they legs are not
- 5:35Speaker 1: exactly the same. Yeah, anyhow, you live over there, you're
- 5:40Speaker 1: not in Jersey, but you're joining us in Pennsylvania. Now
- 5:42Speaker 1: the decision you and uh, you guys gotta make. Uh
- 5:48Speaker 1: you and Joe have to decide if you want to
- 5:50Speaker 1: do your thing now your announcement. Right, we talked about it.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Now you go about your business, do what you need
- 5:59Speaker 1: to do, or you sit here, participate where it makes sense,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and then do your announcement. I mean, I'm gonna say,
- 6:11Speaker 1: let's let's jump this at the front the front of
- 6:14Speaker 1: the line. Right. Don't don't wait because she could go
- 6:17Speaker 1: went south when something that should be done no time
- 6:21Speaker 1: like the presidents, because you might wait and all of
- 6:23Speaker 1: a sudden like Rick dies. I don't know that would
- 6:27Speaker 1: change the whole, That would that would that would change
- 6:29Speaker 1: the tenor was such a downer after Rick died? Like, Oh,
- 6:33Speaker 1: by the way, I think it's more like good news.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You'll go on a two hour tangent. That's probably depends
- 6:43Speaker 1: on because, as we're talking about earlier, depends on what
- 6:45Speaker 1: kind of people are listeners are, because if it's the
- 6:47Speaker 1: last thing they hear, they might then take that direct
- 6:50Speaker 1: action after that's fresh in their mind. They can't take
- 6:53Speaker 1: the direct action yet. It's a seed plant. It's just
- 6:58Speaker 1: a little m hm. Oh, we're wrong. Crin's also going
- 7:03Speaker 1: to dig a hole even deeper in frenzy emerging. As
- 7:07Speaker 1: I was telling earlier, Crins are are few, are not
- 7:10Speaker 1: quite there yet resident GMO Expert's. Everyone's along for the
- 7:17Speaker 1: ride as Krinn becomes a subject matter expert on GMO
- 7:20Speaker 1: strawberries and where they end an Arctic char begin tell
- 7:26Speaker 1: me more. Yeah, let's say that later, but no for
- 7:30Speaker 1: folks listening now, Oh I can, I can just going
- 7:38Speaker 1: back to whatever you're doing, Joe and Miles, Crin, I'm
- 7:43Speaker 1: going to delete that. Oh you know what, just uh, No,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I'll pick up where I left. No, I think we
- 7:50Speaker 1: should do this. Have Phil people now we're talking, we're
- 7:56Speaker 1: still talking about if people can hear talking about it,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but have Phil put up right, and then we'd still
- 8:02Speaker 1: be talking about it now. But then you've been beeped.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You create a lot of like enthusiasm for totally totally,
- 8:11Speaker 1: Like at this point, people are like, by the time
- 8:14Speaker 1: Joe pregnant again, by the time that folks are are
- 8:20Speaker 1: hearing us speak the thing, we'll already be known. Okay,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think we had a book ended. Then how do
- 8:31Speaker 1: you do that? Well? We we we give the big announcement,
- 8:34Speaker 1: big reveal, and then a little little reminder like, hey,
- 8:37Speaker 1: by the way, I remember that thing we said, you
- 8:39Speaker 1: can do something about that. I'll put it in terms
- 8:41Speaker 1: that you would be able to understand, Um, Miles, it
- 8:44Speaker 1: would be that there's a stinger hook m yep, you
- 8:48Speaker 1: got you got your main the body of the bait,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and you realize that he also had the stinger. Throw
- 8:54Speaker 1: the stinger in there like that stinger come at the
- 8:56Speaker 1: end though, ye, So you know, if you've been paying attention,
- 9:01Speaker 1: you already know that meat Eater has been doing a
- 9:03Speaker 1: bunch of phishing stuff for the past year year and
- 9:05Speaker 1: a half. Now we got we got doss Boat Season
- 9:09Speaker 1: one out. We have dost Boats Season two coming very
- 9:12Speaker 1: very soon. We have another little h ice fishing project
- 9:15Speaker 1: in the works that won't be gone too long. So
- 9:17Speaker 1: a bunch of video stuff, all the all the great
- 9:19Speaker 1: stuff we do on on the website. And now we
- 9:23Speaker 1: got a new podcast. Yes we do. You guys get
- 9:27Speaker 1: to starting for free for free. Well yeah, no, it's
- 9:31Speaker 1: not a paid podcast. I don't do they have those. No,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I'm just throwing it in. I don't know. Sweet deal,
- 9:37Speaker 1: you don't even have. You do have to watch me
- 9:40Speaker 1: do pitches about my underwear on Instagram to watch to
- 9:45Speaker 1: get that free podcast. That's how this deal works. Well good, yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think I think that's that's a price I can
- 9:51Speaker 1: free media, free media, advertising, a free thing, more free
- 9:55Speaker 1: media for meat Eater. For those of you who are
- 9:57Speaker 1: even like mildly phishing, curious or hardcore fishing, we got
- 10:01Speaker 1: a new podcast coming for you. And uh no, no
- 10:04Speaker 1: offense to the whole like mediator podcast thing you guys
- 10:07Speaker 1: have been doing here. It's great, but it's not just wandering.
- 10:13Speaker 1: It is not going to be this. It is not
- 10:16Speaker 1: going to be this at all. I'm really interested instead
- 10:22Speaker 1: of you know, just throwing a few people in room
- 10:24Speaker 1: letting him shoot the ship for hours on end. It's
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's gonna be much tighter than that. It's gonna be
- 10:29Speaker 1: mostly composed of short segments that Joe and I have
- 10:32Speaker 1: been working on for God Joe, how long have we
- 10:35Speaker 1: been working on this now? Oh? Months? Man? Since like
- 10:38Speaker 1: the early pandemic days. Yeah. Remember remember the pandemic was
- 10:44Speaker 1: just a new thing. That's when we started, Well, this
- 10:47Speaker 1: is gonna be this will pass soon and then we
- 10:49Speaker 1: can launch that podcast. Yeah, so we've been we have
- 10:53Speaker 1: been digging into this for months and and it is
- 10:56Speaker 1: going to be kind of the opposite of the standard
- 10:58Speaker 1: outdoor media pot cast format in that you know, we're
- 11:02Speaker 1: gonna ramble some, but mostly we're gonna try and keep
- 11:04Speaker 1: it tight. We're gonna try and keep you entertained. You
- 11:07Speaker 1: might learn something, who knows, you might, you might laugh,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you might cry, you might come away feeling like you
- 11:12Speaker 1: didn't waste your time. I don't know. That's what I'm hoping.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Fast paced variety show. We're going for left and right
- 11:18Speaker 1: hooks coming at you constantly. Here. We keep bringing the
- 11:21Speaker 1: variety show thing in, but all I don't think of
- 11:23Speaker 1: is Garrison Keeler, And I just don't think we're doing
- 11:25Speaker 1: Garrison Keeler, Like that's all I can think about when
- 11:28Speaker 1: I hear us are gonna bring on, Like I'm not
- 11:32Speaker 1: promising that will never happen, but it's not in any
- 11:35Speaker 1: of the ones we have. Garrison made a pretty fine product,
- 11:38Speaker 1: he did, but he is not the template for this podcast.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I can tell you that Yanny is a real um.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Yanni has a lot of installed. Yanni likes those old
- 11:52Speaker 1: NPR shows. He likes those shows that like you're up
- 11:56Speaker 1: in whatever driving through Duluth on a Sunday, do that
- 12:00Speaker 1: and you hit the search on your the scroll on
- 12:05Speaker 1: a rental car and lo and behold here's you know,
- 12:09Speaker 1: like the best of Prayer Home, Companion or cartar Talk.
- 12:12Speaker 1: That stuff speaks to Yanni like he's nostalgia. He likes
- 12:17Speaker 1: car talk. I can deal with car talk. I cannot
- 12:21Speaker 1: just deal with car talk. I like it, Okay, I
- 12:23Speaker 1: like it. I like I'm fallen with Rick, Like have
- 12:27Speaker 1: I listened to it before? Yes? No? I like Companion. Well,
- 12:31Speaker 1: he's I think that he is nostalgic for it? Is it?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Is it a sense of nostalgia or does it do
- 12:37Speaker 1: you actually feel satisfied? Like when you listen to definitely
- 12:39Speaker 1: listen to it growing up. If you could put a
- 12:42Speaker 1: bug in Yanny's brain when he hears car talk, you
- 12:46Speaker 1: know what I think the sound would be that comes
- 12:47Speaker 1: out of his brain. Oh, Joe, I have not I
- 12:58Speaker 1: am not familiar. You've never heard car talk? No, no,
- 13:03Speaker 1: never heard it. Those guys are from your neck of
- 13:05Speaker 1: the woods. Fantastic. Not a public radio man over there
- 13:08Speaker 1: Boston like too much death metal? Yeah yeah, not a
- 13:13Speaker 1: public radio guy. Yeah yeah. I think this is the
- 13:17Speaker 1: first media reference that you haven't gotten that I've been
- 13:21Speaker 1: a part of, Joe, Like, no matter any media I've reference,
- 13:23Speaker 1: you've been like, oh yeah, I know that one. Like
- 13:25Speaker 1: you can roll movies and music, but other podcasts The Day,
- 13:30Speaker 1: Chester the Fishing Guy, Chester Floyd. If you're in southwest Montana,
- 13:34Speaker 1: book a trip with Chester Floyd. Uh. He had his
- 13:36Speaker 1: COVID hair, gone, what's the COVID hair? Like when you
- 13:40Speaker 1: don't cut your hair? And I told me, look like
- 13:42Speaker 1: Kenny Loggins look it up. And he didn't know what
- 13:47Speaker 1: I was talking about. He looked at you when he
- 13:49Speaker 1: looked when he looked it up. He got a haircut
- 13:51Speaker 1: very quickly after the next time I saw him, he
- 13:53Speaker 1: had a haircut too young, No, Kenny Logs, Yeah, I
- 13:56Speaker 1: mean he's he's He's not old. Kenny Loggins is in
- 13:59Speaker 1: a American singer, songwriter and guitarist. Kenny Loggins is a
- 14:03Speaker 1: dude who was in the right place at the right
- 14:05Speaker 1: time and a couple of big movies. Man, that's what
- 14:07Speaker 1: I was gonna say, Like from Top Gun and then Footloose.
- 14:13Speaker 1: From Footloose, didn't you do the caddy check? Wasn't that
- 14:16Speaker 1: him too? I think I'm pretty sure he was the
- 14:21Speaker 1: dude they call when you got a big budget movie
- 14:23Speaker 1: you need a tune for it. I mean I heard
- 14:25Speaker 1: that he This is way off of this damn podcast
- 14:28Speaker 1: because I think we got this problem you're trying to
- 14:33Speaker 1: fix with your podcast. Is what I'm gonna say right now.
- 14:36Speaker 1: This is the problem. Please demonstrate on Okay, let me
- 14:40Speaker 1: show you what. Let me to solidify the importance of
- 14:43Speaker 1: this new Fishing podcast. I will tell you a thing
- 14:46Speaker 1: that would never occur on that show. You would never
- 14:49Speaker 1: have someone uh tell you how they're understanding is that
- 14:55Speaker 1: Healey Lewis was supposed to do Ghostbusters. He was spoke
- 15:00Speaker 1: used to do a song for Ghostbusters and something fell through,
- 15:05Speaker 1: and then who did Ghostbusters the song? I only know
- 15:10Speaker 1: who did Ghostbusters too. I don't know. Yeah, yeah, I
- 15:14Speaker 1: don't know who that one. Well, that tune wound up
- 15:17Speaker 1: being I I could be wrong here, who you know?
- 15:20Speaker 1: What this is actually would fit on your podcast because
- 15:22Speaker 1: this is the age Angler, So this would fit on
- 15:24Speaker 1: your show. I've got a uh yeah, so it it
- 15:29Speaker 1: would be a great piece for you guys for your show.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So just little heads up here. Um my understand is
- 15:33Speaker 1: the song that came out was a little too similar
- 15:36Speaker 1: to Huey Lewis's version and it caused some legal ruckuts.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Huh interesting An, Yeah, you got a new podcast coming out, Parker.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Might we might have to talk about Hugh Lewis if
- 15:48Speaker 1: if we did do this form of a podcast, which
- 15:50Speaker 1: we don't, I want to be clear, but we might
- 15:51Speaker 1: have to bring Huey Lewis on to defend himself because
- 15:54Speaker 1: Montana Anglers do not like that guy. I hear that
- 15:57Speaker 1: he fought really hard to privatize this little stretched water
- 16:01Speaker 1: that had been public for a very long time, was
- 16:03Speaker 1: instrumental in that. So he just he's not very well
- 16:05Speaker 1: liked among the angling community out here. That surprises me
- 16:07Speaker 1: because he kind of had that sort of happy, go
- 16:11Speaker 1: lucky everyman he did. That was his deal groove. And
- 16:16Speaker 1: then he's like, but I don't want all these dirt
- 16:18Speaker 1: bags trapes and up and down my creek. Don't be
- 16:21Speaker 1: floating on my water. This this other one, I cannot
- 16:24Speaker 1: I cannot confirm. This is rumor I heard through the
- 16:27Speaker 1: guide mill from my guy days. But buddy of mine
- 16:29Speaker 1: claims he guided him, and he's all excited about He's like,
- 16:32Speaker 1: oh god, he would lose my boat. This is gonna
- 16:34Speaker 1: be great. He said that guy got on his boat
- 16:37Speaker 1: and sang from the moment they shoved off the dock
- 16:41Speaker 1: to the moment he put the boat back on the trailer.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And at first he was like, oh this is cool.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I'm getting like my own private do you lose concert?
- 16:47Speaker 1: And about two hours in he was like Jesus, just
- 16:49Speaker 1: saying a lot, just saying constantly. He's like, wish I
- 16:52Speaker 1: brought your plugs hip to be square, which again at
- 16:56Speaker 1: first it sounds cool, but like four hours in, maybe
- 16:59Speaker 1: it's not so cool anymore. I'm pretty sure the conflicting
- 17:03Speaker 1: Ghostbuster song was I want a New drug? That's what
- 17:06Speaker 1: sounded too similar to the Ghostbusters theme. Oh thanks for clarification,
- 17:11Speaker 1: because as I was saying, I felt like I was wrong. No, yeah, yeah,
- 17:16Speaker 1: I want a new drug d D. It's a pop
- 17:20Speaker 1: culture nugget right there. Yeah, okay, So what's the name
- 17:24Speaker 1: of this here podcast? Bent Bent? Short and simple? Yep,
- 17:31Speaker 1: not get bent, not get bent bent, which speaks to
- 17:35Speaker 1: a lot of levels. I feel like it's a layered concept. Yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 1: your broad has bent, I mean on the most basic level. Yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 1: your hook has bent bent in the hook people get bent,
- 17:46Speaker 1: your hook might get bent out. You're fighting a real
- 17:49Speaker 1: big it all bent out of shape. Yeah. Yeah, we
- 17:51Speaker 1: might piss a couple people off that bent out of
- 17:53Speaker 1: shape about their stream access. That definitely happened. And it's
- 17:58Speaker 1: just a little bit because what we're trying to do
- 18:01Speaker 1: is a little bit different from as we've been talking
- 18:03Speaker 1: about other podcasts in this genre and in this network.
- 18:06Speaker 1: It's it's uh, it's a little irreverend. It's a little different.
- 18:10Speaker 1: We don't do things the way that you might expect
- 18:13Speaker 1: us to, and we may not say the things that
- 18:15Speaker 1: you're expecting to hear in a fishing podcast. So it's
- 18:18Speaker 1: a little bit of a hook. It's got a hook
- 18:20Speaker 1: to it. It's funny, I sure as I'll hope. So
- 18:24Speaker 1: it's short and tight that that's what we're going for.
- 18:27Speaker 1: We will not be rambling on about whatever we feel
- 18:30Speaker 1: like talking about for very long. We have we have short,
- 18:32Speaker 1: discreete segments where we cover off on topics and uh
- 18:36Speaker 1: and then move on to the next thing. Quick cleaning
- 18:39Speaker 1: in general, fishing in general leaves more room just for
- 18:42Speaker 1: overall goofiness and not taking itself seriously. So we're we're
- 18:46Speaker 1: totally vibing on that. I mean because because nothing has eyelashes.
- 18:51Speaker 1: As soon as you start talking about uh, bringing harm
- 18:56Speaker 1: to eye lashed things is a somberness. Second. Pick that
- 19:02Speaker 1: out because a buddy of mine I always always used
- 19:04Speaker 1: to say eyebrows. No I heard recently it's someone's like,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know what it is, man, eyelashes. That's why people
- 19:14Speaker 1: will do stuff to fish that they would never do
- 19:16Speaker 1: to it, chipmunk, it's not eyelids. Like the eyelids don't matter,
- 19:20Speaker 1: it's got they gotta be lashed. Yeah, I think people
- 19:23Speaker 1: care about because snakes, yeah or all they're I don't
- 19:26Speaker 1: know they got something going on anyways, sharks. No, it's
- 19:29Speaker 1: a little hairy liners on them. I I think that
- 19:34Speaker 1: the idea is that we will avoid those those exactly
- 19:38Speaker 1: those little little left turns, because we're also want to
- 19:41Speaker 1: do them in this format of podcast, like, oh, I
- 19:42Speaker 1: got a thought, but Joe and I are trying to
- 19:45Speaker 1: rain ourselves in and and the problem with so much
- 19:48Speaker 1: fishing media is exactly what you said, Joe. It takes
- 19:51Speaker 1: itself too damn seriously. So we're not gonna do that.
- 19:55Speaker 1: We're not gonna do that. We we don't promise that
- 19:57Speaker 1: this fishing podcast will help you catch more fish necessarily,
- 20:01Speaker 1: but we do hope it will help you enjoy fishing
- 20:04Speaker 1: a little bit more. And it's already helped me catch
- 20:06Speaker 1: more fish because yeah, because you guys. Let me listen
- 20:09Speaker 1: to a couple of little pieces and give some notes
- 20:11Speaker 1: and some feedback. And I heard all about Joe pitch
- 20:15Speaker 1: the I'm gonna get the name of the lure wrong.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Now was it the super zoom fluke That is a
- 20:21Speaker 1: fantastically Oh yeah, And I ordered up some of those
- 20:23Speaker 1: and I've caught trout on the elstone on them since then. Yes, sir, trout,
- 20:28Speaker 1: you're fishing about the giant. I saw a picture. Didn't
- 20:34Speaker 1: look too giant. Have been holding wrong or something. Well,
- 20:42Speaker 1: that's the big part to making giant trout look about it.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Was it a tussle, good tussle? Yeah, eat a dry
- 20:51Speaker 1: no dropper, dropper, my God, would catch some nice whitefish. Yeah,
- 21:00Speaker 1: keep tho, no excited, just come home with all the hell.
- 21:02Speaker 1: But from the fish check and all the shrimp and
- 21:04Speaker 1: salmon and everything, I just didn't feel like coming home.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I just all I'd been doing is cleaning fish. I
- 21:07Speaker 1: don't feel like clean any fish. But then I'm all go.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I hear you. It's not very often I touch fish, Liza,
- 21:12Speaker 1: tell about it. If those fish feel so specs where like,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you know, just let me go. It's not amazing. When
- 21:19Speaker 1: I come up and I saw him stand there, I
- 21:21Speaker 1: thought it was done, the old man eater. I was like, nah,
- 21:25Speaker 1: that that dude. So maybe it will help it help
- 21:27Speaker 1: you you catch more. Fishing might help you catch more fish.
- 21:30Speaker 1: But we're not gonna guarantee it at all. There are
- 21:33Speaker 1: no fish catch and guarantees. The only guarantee we can
- 21:35Speaker 1: give you is that we'll keep it tight. We'll keep
- 21:36Speaker 1: it entertaining and be worth the time. How do people
- 21:39Speaker 1: find Bent? Anywhere else? You get your podcasts? Like, you
- 21:44Speaker 1: can come to Spotify, you can go to Apple, you
- 21:48Speaker 1: can come to the Meat Eater website, the mediator dot com.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Click down on that podcast, drop down You'll see Bent
- 21:54Speaker 1: right there. You just get it. It's easy. Best fishing
- 21:59Speaker 1: podcast every exist, definitely ever. I think I think it's
- 22:03Speaker 1: worth mentioning to that. Yeah, I mean, be honest, you
- 22:05Speaker 1: have a segment you're you're in Bent. Oh well, you
- 22:08Speaker 1: know I was going to ask him about that, but
- 22:09Speaker 1: I wasn't. Um. I didn't know if that was confirmed yet.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I know I auditioned a little bit, but I don't
- 22:16Speaker 1: know that it had made it in. You know, the
- 22:18Speaker 1: wonderful job made the cut. All right, your little report.
- 22:22Speaker 1: He's gonna do another report right now for us. He
- 22:24Speaker 1: has a report whenever you Yanni is like a he's
- 22:29Speaker 1: a Bent correspondent. He's a Bent correspondent. And he filed
- 22:32Speaker 1: the report about a new record fish and did such
- 22:37Speaker 1: a wonderful job because he brought in like like a
- 22:40Speaker 1: personal angle, but didn't overdo it, didn't try to make
- 22:43Speaker 1: it like it was all about him, but it was
- 22:44Speaker 1: informed had a funny husband. Like a funny husband wife
- 22:48Speaker 1: bit where humor was there was like some no, but
- 22:52Speaker 1: he knew where the humor was. He knew where the
- 22:55Speaker 1: pathos was. He knew where like the little marital tensioned
- 22:59Speaker 1: me just like the um, like the humanity appealing to emotion,
- 23:07Speaker 1: making an appeal to the to the emotional experience. And
- 23:09Speaker 1: that's when the guy says the word and his wife
- 23:11Speaker 1: doesn't want him to say it. You're gonna have to
- 23:15Speaker 1: go and the about story. I can't wait till listen
- 23:20Speaker 1: to this. Yanni's gonna file another report right now. Are
- 23:23Speaker 1: you ready to report? Yannie? I am okay? What happened? Um?
- 23:28Speaker 1: Links happened? Links have been uh forever, probably one of
- 23:34Speaker 1: the most elusive animals to see all of us Links
- 23:39Speaker 1: and probably wolverines. Have you seen the links? One I
- 23:44Speaker 1: have red told my link story. I don't. I can't
- 23:46Speaker 1: remember it right now. I've never seen one. We you know,
- 23:50Speaker 1: the Hall Road, the pipeline road which never ends. So
- 23:54Speaker 1: we're driving back from the pipeline road. And while we
- 23:56Speaker 1: were parked along the Hall the Alaska Pipeline, a truck
- 24:00Speaker 1: had thrown up a rock and shattered out the window.
- 24:04Speaker 1: So that's a long drive with no side window completely
- 24:10Speaker 1: busted eight hours or whatever. Yeah, as he's come back
- 24:15Speaker 1: with the wind the windows gone. So I remember the
- 24:18Speaker 1: drive because it's just like the worst drive in the
- 24:20Speaker 1: world anyway, when it's dark, but yaw driving along, windows
- 24:24Speaker 1: busted out, and all of a sudden there's a link
- 24:25Speaker 1: stand in the road and we pull up to it
- 24:28Speaker 1: and he looked his He looked at us like, um,
- 24:36Speaker 1: utter incomprehension, like I would venture to guess, like zero
- 24:44Speaker 1: interaction with a human, not like um, not like I
- 24:49Speaker 1: don't see you, not like I know, I gotta get away,
- 24:54Speaker 1: just like utter incomprehension to what was there in front
- 25:01Speaker 1: of it? Did you just hang out? Wow? We got out,
- 25:06Speaker 1: and then he's like, yeah, I would probably go but
- 25:09Speaker 1: just no, he was just like, what in Sam Hill?
- 25:13Speaker 1: Is this? Anybody else seen one? Yeah? Didn't you guys have?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Nick's always doing all kind of fake animals. Oh that's
- 25:27Speaker 1: all right now he's kind of like actual animals. I
- 25:30Speaker 1: mean they're all actual animals, just some of them. Maybe
- 25:34Speaker 1: that links was totally habituated. It was like, I know
- 25:37Speaker 1: what you guys are do you have any snacks? So
- 25:41Speaker 1: you saw one, tell me the story real quick. It
- 25:45Speaker 1: was off the side of the road. We were filming
- 25:47Speaker 1: thermal footage, nighttime stuff, so he saw in the dark. Yeah,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I picked it up on a thermal camera. Mm hmm hmm.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'll share a quick story with about that. Thermal stuff
- 26:07Speaker 1: is interesting. So I was talking to these dudes years ago.
- 26:11Speaker 1: One of the highlights of my life is I got
- 26:12Speaker 1: to go down and talk to the third Special Forces
- 26:14Speaker 1: Group at Fort Bragg and I got to shoot ship
- 26:17Speaker 1: with some of those kids afterwards. So he's a Green
- 26:19Speaker 1: Brays and we got to shoot the ship and he
- 26:21Speaker 1: was telling me a story. One of these kids is
- 26:23Speaker 1: telling me a story that they were in some past
- 26:25Speaker 1: in Afghanistan and they hit these Taliban guys coming over
- 26:33Speaker 1: this pass and one of them had some kind of
- 26:36Speaker 1: like some kind of anti aircraft gun or some kind
- 26:38Speaker 1: of like big I can't remember what are you telling
- 26:40Speaker 1: me what the gun was. He was carrying it, and
- 26:43Speaker 1: they hit the dude and he drops the thing and
- 26:47Speaker 1: then everybody drags him off. So they just sit there
- 26:52Speaker 1: with a thermal scope knowing an eventually someone's gonna want
- 26:56Speaker 1: to come out and grab this gun and they're just
- 26:59Speaker 1: set up waiting to get whoever comes out to get
- 27:01Speaker 1: the gun. And he tells me that as he's watching
- 27:03Speaker 1: with his thermal scope in the middle of the night,
- 27:05Speaker 1: he says, a snow leopard came out and sniffed around
- 27:07Speaker 1: that spot. That wild Pretty cool, go on, Miles. All
- 27:14Speaker 1: all my for the most part, animal setting stories were
- 27:17Speaker 1: the same. It's when I was guiding in Alaska in
- 27:19Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere and I'm like focused on whatever
- 27:21Speaker 1: doing now. At the court of my I see movement, like, oh,
- 27:23Speaker 1: that's what that is. It's not there's none of them
- 27:25Speaker 1: are good stories, Like there is no art, Like nothing
- 27:29Speaker 1: cool happens. I'm just like, oh, I saw Wolverine one time,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but nothing happened, and there was a Lynx one of them. Yeah,
- 27:36Speaker 1: I saw a Lynx. Once I saw Wolverine, what was
- 27:37Speaker 1: he doing? He was basically slinking along the edge of
- 27:41Speaker 1: the timber. I think he popped out to see what
- 27:42Speaker 1: was going on, like what we were up to, and
- 27:44Speaker 1: then saw Uce was like, I'm out of here. I'm gone.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I don't wanting to do with it. Well, most of
- 27:50Speaker 1: the time you were going to if if anybody has
- 27:57Speaker 1: everyone would say no, even in places like Colorado in
- 28:01Speaker 1: the lower forty eight where you have some Even in
- 28:03Speaker 1: Alaska where you have a bunch out of six people
- 28:07Speaker 1: in this room, I agree that. Yeah. Well, if I
- 28:12Speaker 1: hadn't that one, all of us had one lucky moment.
- 28:18Speaker 1: It's easy to picture having not seen well, no here,
- 28:20Speaker 1: it's only in our in our of our group, I
- 28:23Speaker 1: haven't seen one. Three out of five. That's not fifth count.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Oh you ever seen one over there in uh Jersey, Pennsylvania. Nope, nope.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Uh So they along just like they've been studying a
- 28:40Speaker 1: whole bunch of other animals with GPS. Colleges are starting
- 28:44Speaker 1: to do that with links now too, and they're finding
- 28:47Speaker 1: out some wild stuff. Um Like, they're taking these crazy
- 28:52Speaker 1: long migrations. This is where Hobo comes in with the
- 28:55Speaker 1: longest known LINKS migration. He comes in just shy of
- 28:59Speaker 1: twenty were hundred miles in a single migration in about
- 29:04Speaker 1: thirteen months he did this. He started off I can't
- 29:07Speaker 1: remember the name of the park in Alaska, but um
- 29:11Speaker 1: like southern half of Alaska, and then cut over into
- 29:14Speaker 1: um into uh I guess it would be Northwest Territories,
- 29:18Speaker 1: and then headed south a male looking for me. They
- 29:21Speaker 1: don't know, they haven't interviewed, they don't know yet. I know,
- 29:24Speaker 1: but predators tending that to go yell crazy. I can
- 29:28Speaker 1: answer all these questions you have after reading my short
- 29:31Speaker 1: little article, because they certainly think that, and they used
- 29:35Speaker 1: to think that they had like twenty two square mile ranges.
- 29:39Speaker 1: But then one time, this one trapper in one year
- 29:41Speaker 1: on a seventy seven mile seventy seven mile long trap
- 29:45Speaker 1: line caught like over a hundred links is And they're like, well,
- 29:48Speaker 1: how could that be because there's only one, you know,
- 29:51Speaker 1: male that moves around every twenty two miles and you
- 29:53Speaker 1: do the math, and he should have only caught whatever
- 29:55Speaker 1: it was. Um, so they started wondering, and so they
- 29:58Speaker 1: started doing more research on it or whatever. So they
- 30:01Speaker 1: don't really know. They do know that part is probably
- 30:04Speaker 1: related to the fecundity. And then that's related to super
- 30:07Speaker 1: high numbers in snowshoe hairs, because this that is the
- 30:11Speaker 1: classic snowshoet hair, the sick list seven year cycle, yeah
- 30:15Speaker 1: I think it was. The article said like eight to
- 30:17Speaker 1: eleven when the snow shoe hairs go up, So right
- 30:20Speaker 1: now they're super high and they're they're seeing um litters
- 30:25Speaker 1: sometimes of close to ten kittens. Yes, there's there's some
- 30:30Speaker 1: pictures in that. It's a lot of little links babies. Yeah.
- 30:34Speaker 1: I was reading one time that when links, when snowshoe
- 30:36Speaker 1: hairs are down, they'll have a recruitment rate of zero
- 30:40Speaker 1: percent links. It's that hard on them. When their food
- 30:45Speaker 1: source collapses, they'll have a year where they like years
- 30:48Speaker 1: or in the areas where they think that there was
- 30:49Speaker 1: zero recruitment. You would think they divertify those food sources
- 30:53Speaker 1: at some point, like they'd find something else to eat on.
- 30:56Speaker 1: T's not a good strategy. Talk to the raccoons, man,
- 31:02Speaker 1: are you doing this? The researchers were saying that it
- 31:07Speaker 1: very much explains why um, there isn't like genetic diversity.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That's pretty much like it doesn't matter if you're in
- 31:16Speaker 1: the Brooks range or if you are in you know,
- 31:19Speaker 1: the farthest eastern range of the lynx Is range in Canada.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Somewhere a links is the links of the links. And
- 31:25Speaker 1: they figured that's because they make these crazy, crazy movements around,
- 31:30Speaker 1: they don't get the population segments. I read another that's
- 31:35Speaker 1: why I read another interesting piece of links research. I don't.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I can't remember if we covered it on this show
- 31:40Speaker 1: or not a while ago. But they used to think
- 31:42Speaker 1: that there were, uh that some of the major rivers
- 31:46Speaker 1: were genetic barriers. And they had some links wearing tracking things,
- 31:50Speaker 1: and they realized not only are the rivers not a barrier,
- 31:54Speaker 1: but they had links that would cross some of these
- 31:56Speaker 1: rivers they thought were barriers, would cross the multiple times
- 31:59Speaker 1: in a day. Interesting, Yeah, Yukon river. Do you think
- 32:05Speaker 1: about it? Swim across that thing you shoot across? No problem.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Well they probably also crossed a lot in winter. No, no, no,
- 32:13Speaker 1: that they were pointing out that they thought it could
- 32:15Speaker 1: only happen when frozen, but they were pointing out they
- 32:18Speaker 1: were squirting across these rivers in open water. That'd be
- 32:22Speaker 1: cool to see. Yeah. So yeah, that's my that's my
- 32:27Speaker 1: little report on links crazy links are up to I
- 32:31Speaker 1: give him a plus thanks because he was able to answer,
- 32:36Speaker 1: he was able to show his work answer questions A plus.
- 32:39Speaker 1: What do you get? Yeah, a solid. He didn't he
- 32:44Speaker 1: didn't refer to other sources outside that one article. I'm
- 32:50Speaker 1: gonna be it was a single source, and he didn't
- 32:52Speaker 1: have an original argument. It was just regurgitation. But I mean,
- 32:56Speaker 1: that's the point of us, that's what the task for
- 33:02Speaker 1: the audience. I had been meaning to read the article
- 33:04Speaker 1: to which I had links link, not a links, I
- 33:06Speaker 1: had a link, and I have been meaning to open
- 33:09Speaker 1: that link and read because I saw the headline about
- 33:11Speaker 1: a links going real far away. And so just before
- 33:14Speaker 1: we started the show, I emailed the link to Yann
- 33:16Speaker 1: and asked me if he could prepare prepare a report
- 33:18Speaker 1: so for what he had to deal with in the
- 33:20Speaker 1: time he had to deal with it, I thought that
- 33:22Speaker 1: he took ownership with the material, delivered it as though
- 33:26Speaker 1: it was something that was in his mind. On t
- 33:29Speaker 1: counts for a lot, very timely. I'm sticking by the
- 33:32Speaker 1: A plus. I don't think he needs extra credit. Do
- 33:35Speaker 1: you want to give extra credit? No, I said, I
- 33:37Speaker 1: don't think he needs extra credit. Like maybe yeah, like
- 33:40Speaker 1: maybe I'm like some kind of poster board. He can
- 33:43Speaker 1: pay some pictures. Oh yeah, No, he should a print
- 33:47Speaker 1: out from a magazine or something. So, are you gonna
- 34:01Speaker 1: dig your hole even deep round GMOs or you've done
- 34:03Speaker 1: You've done the GMO subject. I will dig it even deeper. Okay, okay,
- 34:08Speaker 1: can you first give it recap of what the problem is, yes,
- 34:11Speaker 1: and then how the problem got worse. So Steve has
- 34:15Speaker 1: oftentime referred to the superior tasting small strawberries that he's
- 34:22Speaker 1: grown in his garden, and that if you go into
- 34:26Speaker 1: the grocery store and you pick up a pint of
- 34:28Speaker 1: really beautiful looking strawberries, they often taste like crap or nothing.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Bigger the worst, the bigger, the worst. So a couple
- 34:39Speaker 1: of episodes ago, I pulled out an old thing that
- 34:44Speaker 1: I had remembered and not fully understood from a while back,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, that is because you know,
- 34:54Speaker 1: strawberries made. It was ish. Strawberries have been developed in
- 35:05Speaker 1: a lab with genes from Arctic fish to make them
- 35:09Speaker 1: more frost resistant, and I guess robust and hardy, you know,
- 35:15Speaker 1: refrigerated and to last longer. So we got a lot
- 35:20Speaker 1: of mail, emails, mails. Some folks were really riled up.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Deep strawberries I didn't know this but inspired deep passions, Yes,
- 35:34Speaker 1: deep passion. Production of strawberries inspires deep pass Absolutely. There
- 35:38Speaker 1: are some helpful, informative, even keeled messages. Other folks were
- 35:44Speaker 1: up in arms. We got one man child right in
- 35:48Speaker 1: if I may say um anyway, So so in a
- 35:56Speaker 1: previous episode, I kind of I will absolute own that
- 36:00Speaker 1: what I had mentioned was wrong. But the reason why
- 36:04Speaker 1: it was wrong is that there is a certain list
- 36:07Speaker 1: of genetically modified crops that are on the market in
- 36:11Speaker 1: the United States, and strawberries are not one of those. Right,
- 36:15Speaker 1: share with me the list again. So according to the
- 36:18Speaker 1: f d A, we've got corn, soybean, cotton, Oh yeah, potato, papaya,
- 36:25Speaker 1: summer squash, canola, alfalfa, tomatoes. How did papaya? What I'm wondering,
- 36:31Speaker 1: I've got a thing about papaya. Hold your horses, so
- 36:34Speaker 1: you can buy a GMO papaya. Yeah, papaias papaya is
- 36:39Speaker 1: our GMO. But hold, I'll adjust that in a bit.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Where did I leave off alfalfa, apple, sugar beets? No, no, tomatoes,
- 36:49Speaker 1: nova tomato or something like that. So, so I was
- 36:55Speaker 1: wrong exactly. I was wrong because I said GMO strawberries.
- 36:59Speaker 1: But GMO we don't have demo strawberages in the United States.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I just want to know about right, So, and folks,
- 37:08Speaker 1: if you know more about this, please right in. Well,
- 37:12Speaker 1: what I'm going to propose, I still want you to
- 37:14Speaker 1: carry on. But what I'm going to propose is that,
- 37:17Speaker 1: why don't you go and get us a great GMO expert.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I want a GMO apologist, not an anti GMO person,
- 37:29Speaker 1: because I can already picture what the anti person is
- 37:31Speaker 1: gonna say. I want to find a guest you should
- 37:35Speaker 1: track down for us, a guest who's a not a
- 37:39Speaker 1: GMO apologist, but a GMO realist. Yeah, someone who could
- 37:43Speaker 1: say like, oh yeah, man, I could see all these
- 37:46Speaker 1: negatives and there's something to them, but I can also
- 37:49Speaker 1: see some positives and there's something to those. So there's
- 37:54Speaker 1: cursory research on this Wikipedia which is whatever that's I
- 37:59Speaker 1: get a D minus for that for that for that source. Um,
- 38:05Speaker 1: But there is I believe it is from Arctic chart
- 38:11Speaker 1: like bacteria on the skin, where that there is something
- 38:15Speaker 1: made from that that is applied and sprayed on strawberries
- 38:19Speaker 1: to help protect the berry and transposent. Then it's washed off. Everyone.
- 38:25Speaker 1: If I've said anything wrong, hold me to account. So
- 38:27Speaker 1: they're taking some fish slime, something that's in fish slip
- 38:34Speaker 1: berries and then getting the back off to the best
- 38:37Speaker 1: of my understanding. And there is also something called bio prospecting,
- 38:42Speaker 1: which is the search for plant and animal species from
- 38:45Speaker 1: which medicinal drugs and other commercially valuable compounds can be obtained.
- 38:49Speaker 1: I don't know if this falls under that category technically
- 38:53Speaker 1: of what that is, but I didn't um that that's
- 38:57Speaker 1: the relationship that I've found from Wikipedia. I have yet
- 39:02Speaker 1: to delve into all this scientific journal articles about that.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I'd rather have arctic charge line on my strawberries than
- 39:09Speaker 1: a lot of other nasty things I can imagine. Me
- 39:13Speaker 1: give me the fish line. I'm good with that. Yeah, no,
- 39:15Speaker 1: it's not off putting to me. UM. When I was
- 39:21Speaker 1: in school, I took this class the literature of natural history,
- 39:24Speaker 1: and one of the books by bye Hank Caarth Hell's
- 39:28Speaker 1: last name was died of tragic death. Him and his
- 39:31Speaker 1: wife drowned canoe and the professor and flathead like biggest
- 39:36Speaker 1: natural lake west of the Mississippi. Um. He had a
- 39:40Speaker 1: cabin on wild Horse Island, which is where the biggest
- 39:43Speaker 1: big horn sheep ever came from. But the point being
- 39:47Speaker 1: about him, we read this this book as part of
- 39:51Speaker 1: his class. He had to read this book. It was
- 39:52Speaker 1: about like bioengineering, and it was looking at natural structures
- 39:58Speaker 1: like how they how you look at cobb web elasticity
- 40:02Speaker 1: and arrangement honey, and ways in which natural structures inform engineering,
- 40:08Speaker 1: which is pretty It's really interesting. I would like to
- 40:10Speaker 1: get someone like that bioengineering person on the show. Joe.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Does this conversation feel familiar to you? You beat me
- 40:17Speaker 1: to it. We were just talking about how there's something
- 40:20Speaker 1: similar here with the study of carp scales and how
- 40:22Speaker 1: it will translate to building better body armor for humans.
- 40:26Speaker 1: But if you want if all the details, you're gonna
- 40:27Speaker 1: have to listen to Bent. But Bent covers. Yeah, but
- 40:30Speaker 1: just just saying, is it like a long window. It
- 40:34Speaker 1: is much more suctinct than this. Basically I just said
- 40:38Speaker 1: exactly the whole thing. Yeah. Wait, I've got one more
- 40:41Speaker 1: thing about strawberries. So I know this has been weighing
- 40:45Speaker 1: on you. So I spoke to a farmer in Georgia
- 40:50Speaker 1: and he has a couple of things to note in
- 40:53Speaker 1: response to your why do you homegrown strawberries taste better?
- 40:58Speaker 1: And he says that the reason why, or one potential
- 41:02Speaker 1: reason why homegrown strawberries maybe sweeter and more flavorful, is
- 41:07Speaker 1: because they're under more stress than commercial strawberries, which I
- 41:12Speaker 1: found very interesting. So, when you are farming strawberries for market. Um,
- 41:18Speaker 1: everything is perfect, the irrigation, the nutrients, everything is just
- 41:22Speaker 1: kind of like a well oiled machine to get as
- 41:24Speaker 1: much yield as possible. Um. But perhaps in your garden,
- 41:29Speaker 1: you know, I don't not sure how you're treating them.
- 41:33Speaker 1: You're you're maybe watering them regularly. There's something maybe missing.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Just I'll hacking my way through it. Yeah, there you go.
- 41:41Speaker 1: You're hacking your way through it. And I'm taking a
- 41:43Speaker 1: bunch of different types of things and giving them all
- 41:48Speaker 1: a general treatment and not necessarily fine tuning all of
- 41:53Speaker 1: their treatment. You're sort of like, you know, like a
- 41:55Speaker 1: classic vegetable garden. You got like eight things you try
- 41:57Speaker 1: treated all the same way. Absolutely, the amount of water,
- 42:00Speaker 1: the aunt of sun, aunt of whatever. And maybe there's
- 42:03Speaker 1: something missing that the strawberry needs, you know, more than
- 42:07Speaker 1: the green beans. But one example this gentleman mentioned was that,
- 42:12Speaker 1: for example, like carrots, let's say that they freeze. If
- 42:15Speaker 1: the plant is under stress, they may release flavonoids and
- 42:18Speaker 1: the flavor may development. More So, Let's say with carrots
- 42:22Speaker 1: that have are are in the process of being about
- 42:24Speaker 1: to freeze, the plant may produce sugars to help protect
- 42:28Speaker 1: the cells, lower the freezing point, so when we're eating it,
- 42:32Speaker 1: more of the flavor is actually more sugar content is
- 42:35Speaker 1: derived from stress that we're that we're tasting. So he
- 42:39Speaker 1: said he doesn't know the scientific explanation for all of that,
- 42:43Speaker 1: but I felt like that was pretty interesting. Yes, when
- 42:46Speaker 1: you find a wild strawberry which just has these like
- 42:49Speaker 1: teensy teensy little leaves, and it throws off this compact
- 42:54Speaker 1: but extremely flavorful little berry, and he's really up, he's
- 42:59Speaker 1: really up against it. And I was talking about this
- 43:00Speaker 1: with my brother who he's he works for the U.
- 43:03Speaker 1: S d A. And UH does a lot of stuff
- 43:07Speaker 1: with crops and plants. And we're out one day commenting
- 43:10Speaker 1: on um this wild raspberry patch and I was like,
- 43:14Speaker 1: I wonder why these wild raspberries liked this spot so much?
- 43:18Speaker 1: And he has this interesting concept he explained to me
- 43:21Speaker 1: where it's like, it's probably not that they like that spot,
- 43:27Speaker 1: it's just that's the spot that they can be that
- 43:30Speaker 1: they're not out competed and overstressed. So what you're seeing
- 43:35Speaker 1: is you're seeing them where they can grow, not where
- 43:39Speaker 1: they want to grow. Meaning if you took that same
- 43:42Speaker 1: plant home until the patch of ground and pulled all
- 43:45Speaker 1: the weeds and gave it its own piece of turf.
- 43:49Speaker 1: It might be like, no, bro, this is where I
- 43:51Speaker 1: want to be. I'm stuck on that rocky ass hillside
- 43:54Speaker 1: on the mountain because all the things that kill me
- 43:57Speaker 1: don't get me there. It'd be like if you find
- 44:00Speaker 1: some like holdout person living in a cave in the mountain.
- 44:05Speaker 1: People like to be in these caves way up in
- 44:07Speaker 1: the mountains. He might be like, no, man, I don't know.
- 44:09Speaker 1: This is where I gotta go, right, But he's hardier
- 44:12Speaker 1: to get away from trying to kill me. It's like,
- 44:15Speaker 1: this is where I gotta be. The takeaway from this
- 44:18Speaker 1: is that the shittier gardener you are, the better your fruits,
- 44:22Speaker 1: and you might be cranking out like really good, bad,
- 44:26Speaker 1: really well for my gardens. Not to complicate this whole discussion,
- 44:30Speaker 1: but I've eaten strawberries out of a big commercial, you know,
- 44:34Speaker 1: growing area, just like riding my bike through south of
- 44:37Speaker 1: Santa Cruz. They grow out of strawberries and just picking
- 44:40Speaker 1: those strawberries, they taste amazing and they're big. We had
- 44:44Speaker 1: other people, because we've been on the strawberry thing for
- 44:46Speaker 1: other people, no, right, but we had people explained that, Um,
- 44:53Speaker 1: we had a strawberry producer right in and explained that
- 44:55Speaker 1: people shop with their eyes, and um, when they're commercially
- 45:01Speaker 1: producing strawberries, it's like a thing that they know is
- 45:04Speaker 1: a value. Is that it that it can turn red
- 45:07Speaker 1: and stay not rotten for a long time. So it's
- 45:10Speaker 1: got good shelf capabilities and it has it has eye
- 45:14Speaker 1: popping appeal because people aren't biting it and then buying it.
- 45:18Speaker 1: They're like, oh my gosh, how big and red that
- 45:22Speaker 1: thing that looks like an amazing strawberry, and they just
- 45:26Speaker 1: don't really care. You could have some weird blemished the
- 45:30Speaker 1: ones on top of all moldy, but be like, these
- 45:33Speaker 1: are the best strawberries you'll ever taste. To be like,
- 45:35Speaker 1: I'm about buying app crazy looking wardy, half green, Yeah, strawberry.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I want the big sons of guns. Okay, moving on,
- 45:47Speaker 1: We're gonna come back, are we good? On? Bent for Knox?
- 45:49Speaker 1: We'll come back. Remind everybody about it. I mean, we're
- 45:53Speaker 1: gonna find opportunities wherever in like, as you notice. But
- 45:58Speaker 1: the next moment, yeah, for the moment, the next ding
- 46:00Speaker 1: I want to discuss Rick, why do you feel that
- 46:03Speaker 1: you're so bad at fishing. Well, I was. I was
- 46:05Speaker 1: just gonna say that there's no amount of podcasts that
- 46:07Speaker 1: I could listen to, uh too to fix what I
- 46:11Speaker 1: got going on what happens? I mean, I say that,
- 46:16Speaker 1: but you know, mostly all the hunting fishing is like
- 46:20Speaker 1: I understand in theory because you get to observe it
- 46:22Speaker 1: and observe it just for background, it's we're talking to
- 46:25Speaker 1: Rick Smith, he's one of our prize most cherished cameramen.
- 46:29Speaker 1: There's a lot of work with us and now and
- 46:31Speaker 1: then opportunity strikes and there's a down minute and and
- 46:34Speaker 1: Rick gets to fish for a second, and just it's
- 46:37Speaker 1: such bad fishing. And I consider myself like have an
- 46:44Speaker 1: ability to watch somebody do something and like pick things up,
- 46:47Speaker 1: whether it be like athletic activities or whatnot. Like I'm
- 46:49Speaker 1: not an uncoordinated person. But the fishing thing, it's amazing
- 46:52Speaker 1: how bad I am. I'll say, well, I think you're
- 46:54Speaker 1: bad at fishing. I think that a big part of
- 46:58Speaker 1: being a good angler is you just know it's going
- 47:00Speaker 1: to turn around. Confident. I feel like I'm an optimist,
- 47:06Speaker 1: but I don't understand the whole uh because you fish
- 47:09Speaker 1: as though you can't picture getting one because I've never
- 47:12Speaker 1: really caught what does that look like? Kind of passivity?
- 47:17Speaker 1: The sort of passivity is sort of like, um, what's
- 47:20Speaker 1: it called when? Uh not ambivalence? No, but since I
- 47:24Speaker 1: can't a certain fatalism, I feel like this happens to
- 47:35Speaker 1: every angler. You show up at a spot and until
- 47:38Speaker 1: a person catches a fish, that spot is like unproven.
- 47:42Speaker 1: So but as soon as somebody catches a fish, everybody
- 47:46Speaker 1: was like, oh, there's fish here, and then there's like
- 47:48Speaker 1: different you fish different, like an increased like, oh I'm
- 47:51Speaker 1: not catching fish because I'm doing something wrong versus there's
- 47:55Speaker 1: no fish here. I kind of have the perspective always
- 47:58Speaker 1: there are no fish here, and they caught one, and
- 48:01Speaker 1: that means now they're especially gone. That's that's right. You're like, oh,
- 48:07Speaker 1: so there was like one year and now someone else
- 48:10Speaker 1: caught it. What's the point, how could there be another one?
- 48:12Speaker 1: It comes from I mean, to be an adult and
- 48:16Speaker 1: never have spent any time fishing. Is I don't know.
- 48:19Speaker 1: I'm probably in the minority, like every even people that
- 48:22Speaker 1: don't hunt fish have fished. I I detected you too.
- 48:28Speaker 1: When you're fishing a lack of lustiness. Uh yeah, yeah.
- 48:33Speaker 1: My brother blames um like a lack of want. Yeah,
- 48:38Speaker 1: he blames blowing shots on elk and deer with his
- 48:42Speaker 1: bow to a lustiness, like he wants it so badly
- 48:47Speaker 1: that the desire actually prevents him from getting it, like
- 48:50Speaker 1: he's too If he could just somehow not want it
- 48:52Speaker 1: as bad, he would probably have better luck getting Since
- 48:56Speaker 1: I've never really caught a big fish, I mean, I
- 48:58Speaker 1: kind of a rock fish I think is my only
- 49:00Speaker 1: take from from Alaska. But since I didn't really catch anything,
- 49:04Speaker 1: I don't even know what it's it's all, it's it's imaginary.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Catching a big fish is like something other people do.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I haven't. I need to internalize it more that it's
- 49:15Speaker 1: possible for me to catch a big fish. What do
- 49:17Speaker 1: you think is his problem does he have? Yeah, it's
- 49:20Speaker 1: just lack of experience. This hasn't done it enough. Like
- 49:24Speaker 1: a hook is such a thing that you guys obviously
- 49:26Speaker 1: just understand that you have to explain, like, oh, if
- 49:28Speaker 1: you're fishing with sea hooks, what are those? Yeah, point proven,
- 49:35Speaker 1: but that you want to note, which that assumes that
- 49:42Speaker 1: that should be the first thing that I do is
- 49:45Speaker 1: is set the hook and I don't even. I mean, like,
- 49:47Speaker 1: I see you guys doing it, but I don't really
- 49:50Speaker 1: it's not a reaction of mine. Like fish bites and
- 49:52Speaker 1: I'm like, oh fish yeah. Are you saying you don't
- 50:00Speaker 1: set the hook with a circle hook or you do?
- 50:01Speaker 1: So I can explain, I can explain it. I find
- 50:06Speaker 1: that when people, uh so listeners always to think all
- 50:09Speaker 1: the circle hook and circle hook uh think of a
- 50:12Speaker 1: J hook as looking like a candy cane right when
- 50:16Speaker 1: it's in something. I'm not telling you this, but it's
- 50:17Speaker 1: telling it's like a candy cane hook. So when it's
- 50:21Speaker 1: in something there there needs to be constant pressure to
- 50:25Speaker 1: have it stay where it is. I mean, there's a
- 50:27Speaker 1: barber and all that, but like generally speaking, you need
- 50:29Speaker 1: to keep attention on it um or else just like
- 50:32Speaker 1: falls out. Right. Imagine the old skit where someone's on
- 50:36Speaker 1: a theater stage and you take you take them off
- 50:38Speaker 1: with the hook, like if you just drop the hook
- 50:42Speaker 1: that the thing falls away and the guy stays on
- 50:44Speaker 1: the stage. So a circle hook has bent in such
- 50:48Speaker 1: a way and gets hooked in the fish's mouth in
- 50:50Speaker 1: such a way that it's not likely to fall away.
- 50:53Speaker 1: It takes a lot more to get it in there,
- 50:55Speaker 1: and it kind of has that generally has to be
- 50:57Speaker 1: that the fish sort of turns and the hook assles
- 51:00Speaker 1: into the corner of its mouth and gets in there.
- 51:02Speaker 1: But once it's in there, gravity um is much has
- 51:07Speaker 1: a much more difficult time freeing that hook up. Is
- 51:10Speaker 1: it like a C like a lower case aerial fontsy
- 51:14Speaker 1: You go, yeah, and you gotta jam that. That thing's
- 51:17Speaker 1: got to get jammed in there. But when it gets
- 51:19Speaker 1: jammed in there just right, it's likely to stay where
- 51:22Speaker 1: you could cut the line and he's still gonna have
- 51:23Speaker 1: that circle hook stuck in his mouth for some time.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Jam's almost the wrong word though, because jam is sort
- 51:29Speaker 1: of you're applying like a hook setting almost wedged, Yeah,
- 51:38Speaker 1: lodged maybe lodged, Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 51:40Speaker 1: It gets lodged in his mouth. And so static types
- 51:44Speaker 1: of fishing like longlining, trot lining, all these kind of
- 51:48Speaker 1: static fishing where there's no person there to like yank
- 51:51Speaker 1: the hook and reel, you use a circle hook. I
- 51:53Speaker 1: found introducing people to circle hook fishing who've been fishing
- 51:56Speaker 1: their whole lives, they're so it's so ingrained in them
- 51:59Speaker 1: to set the hook because recreational fishing is predominantly jayhooks.
- 52:05Speaker 1: It's so ingrained in them to set the hook that
- 52:07Speaker 1: you can't get them two use circle hooks properly because
- 52:12Speaker 1: they get it hit and they just every adam of
- 52:16Speaker 1: their body wants like yanked Rod. You gotta like Brodie's wife.
- 52:20Speaker 1: I had to yell at her so bad it almost
- 52:21Speaker 1: like destroyed my relationship with Brody because she wouldn't stop
- 52:25Speaker 1: doing that. Um Rick, on their hand, doesn't even have that.
- 52:32Speaker 1: There's a lack of which is where I'm confused on
- 52:35Speaker 1: the like setting the hook not setting the hook thing. Okay,
- 52:38Speaker 1: here's what he'll do. Let's say Rick bounces back like
- 52:41Speaker 1: you give me a jay hook. He does that for
- 52:43Speaker 1: a minute, but then he loses hope, and then he
- 52:45Speaker 1: wants to try circle hook, and he does that for me.
- 52:47Speaker 1: He loses back to jay hook. So or you're trying
- 52:49Speaker 1: to help me solve, you know, give me a fish.
- 52:52Speaker 1: If Rick's working a jayhook and I'm and he's jigging
- 52:55Speaker 1: a jig and a helmet hits it, now a lot
- 52:57Speaker 1: of people would be like very invigorated by this, and
- 53:00Speaker 1: they would know that they're gonna for a couple of
- 53:03Speaker 1: seconds at least. They will especially jig, They're gonna do
- 53:07Speaker 1: all manner of things to get because like a hell,
- 53:09Speaker 1: but often you don't get him till his third hit.
- 53:12Speaker 1: They just they're they're I don't know what they're doing
- 53:13Speaker 1: on there, but they're not getting it. And so you'll
- 53:16Speaker 1: see people do all these antics like he'll hit, you'll
- 53:18Speaker 1: miss him, they'll bang the bottom, they'll jiggle in his face,
- 53:22Speaker 1: they'll like do something. Rick just this sort of like
- 53:24Speaker 1: strange passivity to where all of a sudden he all
- 53:29Speaker 1: but leaves the rod and walks at the moment, at
- 53:32Speaker 1: the moment when anybody else on planet most doing everything
- 53:36Speaker 1: in their post. I'm trying to figure out did I
- 53:38Speaker 1: do something wrong that made the hook at the bottom.
- 53:41Speaker 1: And then I'm like, maybe that's what it was. It
- 53:43Speaker 1: wasn't the fish, it was at the bottom. I could
- 53:46Speaker 1: be in a different boat. I can be a different
- 53:49Speaker 1: doing ten things, and I'll be like, Rick, you just
- 53:55Speaker 1: had a hit. Maybe he's too much in his head,
- 53:58Speaker 1: are you think are you thinking through it too much?
- 54:00Speaker 1: As you know, Steve assumes like and everybody else that
- 54:05Speaker 1: is generally out there have spent so much time doing
- 54:08Speaker 1: this that it's just natural that you just for me.
- 54:12Speaker 1: It's like a foreign completely foreign. There's no hook setting response,
- 54:16Speaker 1: there's zero, and that's that's what's funny about the circle hooks.
- 54:19Speaker 1: And I think miles you were driving at this. Usually
- 54:22Speaker 1: the less experience of an anger you are, the easier
- 54:25Speaker 1: time you have with a circle Hume totally. If you
- 54:29Speaker 1: chain them up where they can't get at the rod. No,
- 54:33Speaker 1: but this is in the end. How many how but
- 54:37Speaker 1: did we catch on a circle that week? We caught one?
- 54:43Speaker 1: But this is what I'm saying. So yeah, but we
- 54:46Speaker 1: were running a lot of jigs, I know. But still
- 54:49Speaker 1: we also but when nobody was fishing them, Steve did
- 54:54Speaker 1: a little fishing. Then I switched to shar Truce and
- 54:59Speaker 1: it got good. But it also got later today, it
- 55:02Speaker 1: got dusky. We moved to a new spots. It's not
- 55:08Speaker 1: my it's part of my five year plan get better fishing. Now.
- 55:11Speaker 1: I don't want Here's the thing is, I feel oftentimes
- 55:14Speaker 1: we have a lot of laughs at Rick's expense, and
- 55:15Speaker 1: I don't want it to be the case. So what
- 55:17Speaker 1: we're actually I just work up a logo for Rick.
- 55:19Speaker 1: We're trying to make up an acronym. So it's like
- 55:23Speaker 1: ours like ready to go international, international because you've been,
- 55:29Speaker 1: You've been more countries than anybody I hang out with.
- 55:31Speaker 1: I don't know. Sea is like by seer Land and
- 55:37Speaker 1: then uh no coastal because you're ready to go. The
- 55:42Speaker 1: first guy in the water, colder the water, the cooker,
- 55:45Speaker 1: he's into it is a sweet logo with flames and stuff,
- 55:52Speaker 1: because I want to find a way to better celebrate
- 55:54Speaker 1: Rick and not just fis fishing is not part of it,
- 55:57Speaker 1: not just playing out his inadequacies. I am glad that
- 55:59Speaker 1: the camera guys, uh, I mean Seth. Seth is a
- 56:05Speaker 1: you know, he's a trained you know, harvest of angler
- 56:11Speaker 1: background in angler. Yeah, he did good. Chris horrible fisherman,
- 56:15Speaker 1: but he caught some fish. At least he's funny to watch.
- 56:21Speaker 1: It's funny to watch him. Watch about him. He's just animated.
- 56:27Speaker 1: He's trying to do everything. He just does it all wrong.
- 56:30Speaker 1: But a lot of big movements to watch the rick
- 56:34Speaker 1: and the fatalism and everything. There's not it's not that
- 56:37Speaker 1: there's no big movement. What's the sound effect for that?
- 56:39Speaker 1: What's the sound effect for watching? Oh, when you give
- 56:42Speaker 1: Rick a rod? What is the sounds it's just straight
- 56:48Speaker 1: or No, I don't. I feel like I'm an optimist,
- 56:54Speaker 1: but I just have a hard time imagining actually catching
- 56:57Speaker 1: a fish because I've never really done it. One time
- 57:00Speaker 1: I did, it wasn't it was so easy that it.
- 57:04Speaker 1: I went fishing for silver's in Alaska. No. No, it
- 57:10Speaker 1: was like just with my dad and brother and um
- 57:14Speaker 1: it was we limited out in like an hour. You
- 57:17Speaker 1: ripped lips. That is what you're trying to say. Yeah,
- 57:19Speaker 1: the guy got us. The guy got us on like
- 57:21Speaker 1: the spot and it wasn't a Yeah. Maybe you've got
- 57:24Speaker 1: to like envision, envisioned the success and envision, you know,
- 57:29Speaker 1: and then like manifest. I get your call with my dad. Yeah,
- 57:34Speaker 1: if you talk to Yanni's dad, Yanni's dad will tell
- 57:36Speaker 1: you how you need to visualize. Yanni's dad. Yeah, I
- 57:44Speaker 1: was not doing that. When he hunts or whatever he
- 57:49Speaker 1: he imagined so strongly did it actually ends up coming
- 57:56Speaker 1: from where he imagined it coming from. He conjures it
- 58:02Speaker 1: all right. He makes a mind movie so compelling to
- 58:06Speaker 1: reality that reality conforms to that mind movie. We need
- 58:09Speaker 1: to switch out the sea for coastal with conjuring, and
- 58:13Speaker 1: we wanted to have it be like day or night.
- 58:15Speaker 1: This is like his cameraman logo. So we're gonna be
- 58:17Speaker 1: like K and I g h D like night. But
- 58:21Speaker 1: then we'll have a prince. He says, like, but like
- 58:24Speaker 1: without a K. I can't wait for this logo. We
- 58:29Speaker 1: got a good logo. Guy we've been working with. I'm
- 58:30Speaker 1: gonna have them start working. Do you want flames on
- 58:33Speaker 1: our lightning bolts? Lightning bolts? Good, We're on scales and
- 58:37Speaker 1: lightning bolts. Um uh yanni? You want to take a
- 58:42Speaker 1: stab at deep drop fishing? Yeah? Wait, let's set this up.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Why were you guys in Alaska filming? We're in Alaska
- 58:50Speaker 1: filming an episode of Me Eater Um which will go on,
- 58:54Speaker 1: which will premiere on Netflix. And we were up there
- 58:58Speaker 1: exploring um halibut fishing, exploring deep drop fishing, exploring shrimping
- 59:07Speaker 1: and crabbing. Is it the first only fishing fishing only episode.
- 59:13Speaker 1: It's not. No. We did like a giant catfish extravaganza,
- 59:20Speaker 1: but we uh hunted squirrels. Oh really yeah? But we
- 59:25Speaker 1: dove for we dove. You're talking about the one with Kevin. Yeah,
- 59:30Speaker 1: but I thought we did something else. All catfish all
- 59:32Speaker 1: the time we jug fished, we did everything behold a
- 59:36Speaker 1: rod and then episode we jug fished, Maybe that would
- 59:40Speaker 1: be better at that multiple because then we did a
- 59:42Speaker 1: whole episode about we did a whole episode about flatheads.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Yeah with that one we squirrel hunted m with Parker
- 59:51Speaker 1: there have But yeah, we did one about jug fishing, jugging,
- 59:55Speaker 1: limb lining, and trot lining. And in this we also
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: dove for sea cucumbers, dove for scallops, shot of green laning,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: snorkel snorkeled for those things. Dove like kinda like you
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: had to kind of go into water to get you
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: did more diving. Uh, But yeah, we're up filming a show,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: and so we're talking about some of those adventures and
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: and during this now and then in fishing, there's a
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: lot of waiting and a camera guy can just sit
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: there and wait and wait and wait, or if you
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: hand him around, he can try to do a little angling,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: which is Rick was killing his downtime um trying to angle.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: And that's why and that's why we're getting so much
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: fun out of mostly provide entertainment dogging on Rick. But
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: do you want to discuss deep drop, which we have
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: never covered nope. We went to roughly feet of water. Um,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: it's kind of it's kind of like a basin, right,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: would you call it a basin on the bottom of
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: the ocean? And Um, these fish that we were after
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: black cod also known as sable fish, also known as butterfish,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: which I don't think we talked about that when we're
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: up there, but when I was doing some research, yeah,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: they call them butterfish. Have you eaten your flames yet? Oh?
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Just one. I shared it with some of my closest
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: friends that knew would appreciate it, and they appreciated it. Yeah.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I even had to preface it with I hope you
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: efforts understand that I'm not serving this to like gloat.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I'm serving this because I appreciate you guys. I'm really
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: sharing it. I figured that you will appreciate it. It's
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: not like ha ha, look what I have that. It's
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: like taste this. Yeah, that's an interesting distinction. You did
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: tell him that, Yeah, you sat them down? Yeah, okay,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: but yeah I did a you know, since we're on
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: the subject, I did a basically like a soy ginger poach.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: That's how you do U, is it? Yeah? And it
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: was I mean, it's butterfish, man. It's it's amazing how
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: it maintains its firmness even onto the fork. But then
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: when it gets into your mouth, something happens and it
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: melts like butter. Tony Colagrassi, who who uh turned me
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: on to the prospect of catching my own black cod
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: because he sends me black cod filets that he catches
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: with his friends. Um, he's remarked to that that, Um
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: it's hard. You can't overcook it. Not you can't, but
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: it's not. You don't need to worry about overcooking it
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: as much when the window of goodness is a long window.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: I was surprised because, I mean it was a low
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: temp poach. You know, you only you simmer it on
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: low for five minutes and then uh no, it might
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: have been tent total. But even then, I thought, man,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: because this file at wasn't you know, it wasn't a pound,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: might have been a half pound. I had two kind
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: of pieces to fit into a small pan, and ten
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: minutes with the lid and simmering. That's a lot of
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: cooking for a piece of fish. You know it's gonna
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: be thoroughly cooked. But it wasn't overcooked A bit is good.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: It is very good. So we're in feet of water
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: steve ft aluminium skiff. Very nice weather that day, Calm
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Seas almost could like water ski out there that day
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: so we could zip out. We actually talked about water
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: skiing that day. For sure. I think when you're out
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: there and it's that glassy, you can't not mention it.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: But to get down there you have to use a
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: an electric reel. Now you don't have to, but it
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: would be uh quite a task to reel up a line,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: plus the scope that you have, so it's probably even
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: more out there. But yeah, three pounds of weight um
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: two hooks above it was just circles, cut bait um,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: pretty stout rod. It's got to hold up three pounds
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: of weight and you drop her down there. It probably
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: takes what ten minutes? Yeah close, I was to say,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: so I wanted time. I never got around the time.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: And maybe it takes maybe eighteen minutes to hit the bottom,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: to hit the bottom long enough where you put in
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: the rod holder because you get sick of waiting for
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: it to hit the bottom and uh and you gotta
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: you gotta chase it with the boat. Yeah, talk about
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: that Yeah, I guess you just gotta figure out what
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the wind slash currents doing and just trying to stay
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: and just basically I think all we were doing is
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: trying to keep a line vertical right going out, drive
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: the boat whatever direction the line is going. Yeah, so
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you can so you can stay over the top of it,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: which you think it's moving more or the boats moving
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: and you're just having to correct the boat to stay
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: on top of the weight. I think that in those
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: depths the wind over rides the current because the current
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: isn't being you know how like when you get to
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: the top of a mountain the wind is really strong.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: It's because you're taking a massive moving air but restricting
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: the amount of space that air has to pass through.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: So you have like this whatever thousands of you know,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: thousands of vertical fee to air. But then all of
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: a sudden it's you're cramming it into a smaller gap
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: on top. So when you're out in that huge, deep stuff,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: the currents aren't nearly as strong, and so where you
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: might be in an area where you might have a breeze,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: it's not in alignment with the current, but the current
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: might override there. I think that even a slight breeze
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: is going to push you in a way that the
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: current isn't going to push you. So you let it
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: go to the bottom. And this is what I found
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: the most interesting. It took a while to figure out.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: It took us, I don't know, a couple couple of
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: drops at least, and and maybe twenty minutes of drifting along,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: because once you get down there, you feel the bottom
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: and then it's like you felt the bottom with the weight,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: But then the weight keeps dragging your rod tip down
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: and if it just it just didn't compute, because you're wondering, like, well,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: maybe that's because it's stuck on the bottom, and then
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: the boat's moving and so there's just gonna be no slack.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: The rod tip keeps going down. But after doing this
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: sort of slow jig up and down, what we realize
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: is that the bottom was not firm, but it was
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: more of this primorim I like to call it. There
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: you go primorial muck. And I would guess that it's
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: anywhere from six to eight ft deep. Yeah, the muck
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: at the bottom fet and it might be you feel
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: it hit, but it doesn't stop. It might be twenty deep,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: but you never let it go down that deep. I
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: don't know how long the munk goes, so you kind
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: of have to jig slowly pull it up. You feel
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: it free from the muck, and then when you rop
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: it you kind of again feel it, but it hits
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: from where your rock tips started and then to where
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: the lead hits the bottom again, and you think your
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: raight tip would stop. It's like the whole distance of
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: your jigging motions that make sense like um, So then
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: again it gets sucked down into the muck. So you
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: left to try to cover it, to try to hover
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: it on the bottom. Did you guys get better at
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: that when you guys went back and we'll just let
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: it sit there. I got better to covering it. Yeah.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Not letting it sing, no, because the sinker would drag
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: the circle hooks and bait down into the muck if
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: you just let it sit. So you kind of like
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: lifted out it hits the muck, take the tension out
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: and see if you got a hit. Lift it floated,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Lift it floating, lift the floating. It's you never rest
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: but that that we got that thing down there, and
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: it wasn't I couldn't believe. Yeah, five minutes. I almost
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: like I would say, like about ship, I mean, I
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: probably about shat my pants out of just being astounded
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: after all the reading and talking and thinking and figuring
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: and gear rigging, and to go out in that depth
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: of water. And yeah, I filmed you do a lot
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: of different things and be pretty happy about it. But
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: I've never seen you that happy. When you brought up
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: that fish, I was extremely excited. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I have technical questions on this. I'm sorry, like I'm
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: just curious. From an angling standpod, So you're talking about
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: like a dropshot style rig with a three pound weight
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: on the bottom. Yeah, Well, I be more like, uh
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: um no, because the you got little uh you got
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: little leaders coming come off. Okay, So you got a
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: mainline and then they're quite a bit their space there,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: their space. The spacing is very exact aggerated, So from
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: the sinker to the bottom circle it's probably thirty six
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: inches and then there's thirty six inches more to the
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: next dropper. And the droppers are maybe eight inches long.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: They have a circle hook on them and then all
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: this and a lot of the droppers are coated and
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: glow in the dark tubing. There's a lot of glow
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: in the dark this and that so that they can
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: And there's also a line one of those little lights
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: that light that water activates a little light like a
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: high pressure light. One of those little lights is rigged
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: up at the top connection just to have something down
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: there going click with light. And with a three pound weight,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: and I'm assuming you're running mono eighty pound braid. Okay braid,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: so you gotta you don't have to do this way
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: that would work. There would be too much stretching, you'd
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: never know when you hit the bottom. And so but
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: you can still with a three pound weight you can
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: feel the take. Yes, really absolutely far more than I
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: thought you'd be able to. Yeah, there's no doubt. That's
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: what it feels like. When we did the swordfish fishing
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: in this roughly the same depth. Um, they're those guys
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: have the rod locked off and they're just watching the
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: rod tip. They're not feeling it because they're not hitting
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: the bottom. They're floating it like and they see a
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: tick tick tick. And I think we were using five
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: pounds of wait, weren't we there? We had five pounds. Yeah,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: so whatever they see in that rod tip, you know,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: but with this with three pounds, yeah, you can very
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: much tell that there was a fish on. Did you
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: guys ever get a double? No? And we tried leaving
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: them getting a hit, letting it sit. Um. No, never
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: got a double, but we got it pretty dialed. We
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: got a pretty doubt. We went out one day and
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and and didn't do it long and had four And
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: I feel like we could have We had two anglers
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: and got four, And I feel like me and fits
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: were out there and we could have stuck around and
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: got eight, which would have been allowed to get that day.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: It's funniest thing in the world. I told my wife
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: out doing it, completely unimpressed. She so he just doesn't.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: It feels like cheating because of what because because it
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: just reels itself up. But the whole the point of
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: fishing isn't the reeling in part. And I told you
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: this to No, it's your exerting effort or something. E
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: Let's not told her this, And I'm gonna tell you
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: it now. If I took all the things that it
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: takes too deep drop up a black cod and threw
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: all in a pile on the floor and gave you
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: a boat and said, go get me a black cod.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Figure it out. Uh or I took all of the
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: things it takes to catch a large mouth bass and
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: threw it on the floor and put you at a lake.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: What do you think you're gonna do? Quicker? M hmm.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: I'll tell you you are never you are never, ever,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: ever ever, I'm gonna catch the black hodon. I ran
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: into this with the time I got introduced deep drop
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: fishing was when we went out sword fishing. We're with
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: these dudes, and we're with this guy. He's a commercial
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: sword fisherman. He lives south of the line where you
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: can where you can do plagic longlining, so no long
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: lining is allowed. You can only hand line sword fish.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Where where's the line, like somewhere around the Florida border.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: I don't exactly it's in that. I don't exactly know
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: where to Joe, Do you know exactly where that line is?
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: There's some lines in federal waters whatever. You can't longline,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: so it's um and you can't even rod reel for commercial.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: It's hand lining. And they wait. Swordfish at night come
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: up shallow. So they go out and set these buoys
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: and they got these these hundred foot lines on these booties,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: and there's a eight and you're out there and you
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: got a light on the buoy and you're actually waiting
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: for the buoy to start bobbing, and you run over
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: in hand line of sword fishing at night or in
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: the daytime, they spiral straight down two canyon mouths that
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: aret underwater the same way points where he's catching him
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: at night. He fishes that same way point, but he's
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: catching him a hundred feet from the surface at night,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: and he's fishing that same way point, but catching fish
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: one thousand, three hundred feet down in the daytime. Now
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: he's black cow. They don't do I don't think that
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: they ever experienced anything. They just stay on the bottom.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: So we go out twenty miles and the ocean is
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: three dimensional. I don't need to explain. And he's like,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna catch a swordfish twenty miles out feet of water,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: and I'm like, you are not. And does all this,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: this and that and the other thing in the right
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: And it gets finally gets that thing owner and tap tap,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: and he throws the switch and here comes a seventy
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: pound swordfish. I'm thinking, in my head, you will never.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: I don't care how long you live, you will never
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: do that again. Yanni's puking out the other side of
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: the boat the whole time. You don't even know what's
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: going on. He's so sick. We're in a twenty four
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: ft boat and he's so sick. We didn't know he
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: didn't know he had one on. That's not true. I
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: was trying to puke. I couldn't get it out. So
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: he then does his whole rigmarole over again. Bam, second
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: sword fish. In that moment, I was like, this is
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: the pinnacle. This is the pinnacle of angling. Like in
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: terms of what I've often said about houndsman, if you're
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: gonna take the knowledge required to do something and put
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: it into a measurable unit, like how we measure digital
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: information and bits of material. If you're gonna take know
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: how two uh train a hound and then catch a
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: mountain lion in the absence of snow, and then you're
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: gonna measure the information that had to be in that
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: person's head, it would be vastly, like exponentially greater than
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: the bits of information that it takes me to sit
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: on the edge of a alfalfa field and shoot a
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: deer with my rifle. Not even comparable amounts of information,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: the information that that the bits of information that are
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: in that guy's head to go out with that equipment
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and that ocean and pull up two swordfish. It's like,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: it's not even the same ballpark. Is what it takes
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: to go into a lake and catch up and catch
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: a blue gill off my mom's dot. It's not the
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: same thing. So for my wife to be like, I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: don't really get it's not fair. It's like, what are
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: you talking about. Well, maybe Joe and Miles can do
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: a little report on the last time I deep dropped swordfish.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: We were with the captain in Louisiana and he he
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: felt that swordfish were such majestic creatures that it was
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: disrespectful to pitch yourself against him with an electric reel.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: And we fished those depths and hand crack artisanal. It
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: was miserable, man, but we did with a bespoke real
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: I here's my other thing about I like your way
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: for the record, Like, I like the other thing about
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: deep dropping is this is okay, it's not fishing. And
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: I told this to Janni. I'm like, NI says, it
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: is fishing. But I'm like, okay, let's say it's not fishing.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: I don't care what it is call itself. That's why
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: I try to say deep dropping, because like it's it's
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: it's not fishing, it's something else. Sure, whatever it is
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: is fascinating, and whatever it is I can see is
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: there is a lot of pun intended. There is a
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: lot of depth. There is an enormous amount of depth
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: to it where I could picture a world and I
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: could picture myself becoming very, very obsessed with it. I
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: take no argument with the level of depth of this
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: and all the things that you just show just mean
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: deep water, I don't. I mean more in the metaphorical sense. Yeah, Like,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: and your your analogy of dropping all the gear and
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: saying like catch this or cats that, Like, it makes
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: your point clearly. But the argument that it is it
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: represents the pinnacle of angling assumes that the pinnacle of
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: angling is based on what is the most technically difficult
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: way of doing it, and that, to me, is not
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: how I personally define the pinnacle of angling. Fair, I
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: was totally fair. I think that there's more of an aesthetic,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: like felt experience to it, and I don't think that
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: anyone can define the particle of angling for anybody else
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: for the record. But that's a great point, man, I
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: just don't That's not how I would say. Like, Man,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: that's the thing I aspire to be as an angler
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: is the guy who like has the technical details down
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: to the most fine minutia to catch the fish. I get.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: I get that it's hard. It's just not not how
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: we go about it. When we were talking what I
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: was with my brother Danny. When I was with my
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: brother Danny and my wife and we were deep dropping
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: and doing well, and my wife was um saying that
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: it just seemed like somehow like not fishing like. And
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: I'll point out that we only have one deep drop
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: rig and me and Danny were kind of monopolizing the
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: deep drop so so she wasn't. She was a year
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: to go and do all the other stuff that you
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: do where you get to like do it. So uh.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: In this conversation we're talking about like, well what does
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: it mean? And I was saying, part of the fund
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: for me is trying to visualize what these things are doing.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: This is it's another planet, man, at that depth, it's
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: another planet. It's dark, right, It's like I can't picture
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: what's going on down there when they come up there
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: like an ice cube. How cold they are. It's so
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: damn cold down there. That fish feels like an ice cube.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: So anyways, I was getting off on that, and Danny
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: was saying, Okay, well, let's let's extend this logic to
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: its extreme. He's like for me to see a fish
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: cruising through shallow water and to pick the fish, and
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: I can see it's world, I can see its moods.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I can watch it respond to my cast like that's
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: something how like? So getting off on how you don't
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: know what they're doing is great, but it's also nice
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: to get off on knowing what they're doing, which is fair.
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: And when I say the aesthetic experience like that, to
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: me personally, is that pinnacle when you you have to
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: see the visual cues of what the fish is doing,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: read it's behavior, read all the different things around you
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: make your decisions based on that in the moment for
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: how you were going to plot your attempt to fool
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: that fish and landed. Those are the pinnacle moments for me.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: It's it's definitely site fishing ice ice fish with a
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: painter named Ben and I took him. He was a
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: he was a fly fisherman, like fish shop, but I
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: introduced him to ice fishing, and he was saying how
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: he couldn't ice fish without imagining the hole in the
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: ice as a birth canal, because he was like, I'm
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: so removed from the fish by like a physical, impenetrable
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: barrier that when we catch one, I feel as though
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: it's passing through some sort of birth canal from one
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: world into another. And that's how I felt about these
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: black hat coming up. It was like they were being delivered.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: It was like they were being like imagine a hand
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: from the past, sort of like penetrating the presence and
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: ropping something. It was like they're being like birth from
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: one reality to another, like one dimension that there's this
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: orifice through which things pass one dimension to another, one
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: being the the abyss and the other be in my hand,
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: total darkness into sunlight. Yeah, that fish, when he's on
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: his way up, he's gotta be like this cannot be good,
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: No Joe for you. What's what's the pinnacle of fishing? Um?
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: I side more with Miles on this, and I'll say though,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: like deep dropping, it's one of those methods sort of
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: like wire line trolling. I have the utmost respect for
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: the guys who are very good at it. A lot
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: of people think that that's kind of easy stuff like
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: go out there, drop down this heavy weight, catch your fish,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: go pull your wire line, you catch your stripers. There's
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: a lot of art to both of those and I
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: appreciate them very much. But I would rather throw poppers
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: at alreny pound black fin tuna in Louisiana than deep
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: drop sword fish just because same thing. It's just it's
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: the visuals. For me, it's the interaction like that. That
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: interaction is part of what's so cool about fishing and hunting.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: But fishing was what we're talking about, like what is
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: that fish doing? What am I doing? And how where
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: do those two things meet at the end of the line,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: my actions and their actions. That's white like watching rick
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: fish more than deep dropping. Oh I'm happy to keep
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: doing it. Yeah, yeah, what's your take on it? Though?
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: After having done it? You were you were you were
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: like a deep drop enthusiast. Last I talked to you,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: I was yeah, yeah, Um, it was tough just having
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: the one rig, you know, like you're saying, you know,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: there's a lot of sharing a lot of Sharon going on.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: You definitely need to invest in another rod and reel
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: get after most of them. But yeah, no, it's like anything.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: I like figuring it out, you know. And I told
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: you I was talking with Well, I was talking with
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: his brother. But Jennifer's got cousins there in North Carolina,
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: and one of them deep drops for swordfish. And I
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: was talking to his brother and I was explaining to
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: him about the mock and all that, and he was saying, oh,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: that the muck is the same when we deep drop
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: for swordfish. He says, you should call Rob and talk
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: to him. He'll give you some good tips on how
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: to work at the top of the mud and be
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: right where you need to be. What I'm in visualizing
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: is I might patent a sinker that has like uh
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: some that steals some attributes from the Mars were over.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: It's a streamline three pound sinker that passes through the water,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: but when it gets near the bottom, it deploys a little. Yeah,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: and then it had and it lands like a Martian rover.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: It's got like a back burner. That's the rig. I
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: got a feeling that with those circle hooks you can
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: probably just leave it in the rod holder once you've
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: got your depth and wait, five ten minutes will be
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: in the primordial monk. Well no, not if you said
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: it to not get into them, to not let it
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: go into the monk unless you think that the muck
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: is the depth is changing. I have it on good
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: authority that you have to be dragging bottom by people
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: who would know. Now I know, so you would make
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: it so that the weight is like in the mock,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: dragging it and you have your hooks just above it.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: But did You're not so worried about feeling the fish
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: because I think that those fish will just get on
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: hook themselves and then probably stay on. That's I feel
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: we should take this offline. I get what you're saying,
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: but I think that there's I'm trying to be mindful
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: of the limits of the audience. I get what you're saying,
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: but I feel like we should discuss it later, just
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: you know for sure for sure. Well, I need to
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: talk to my wife's cousin too, get some thoughts on that. UM.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: I used to think of helmet fishing is being very impersonal,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: but now I feel like I'm in direct communication with
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: those They're only three feet down. It's like they were
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: like neighbors. I had a haliban experience. I share my story. No,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: I definitely need to share this story. Thought we were
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: going to kick it off on this one. I wish
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: that was on camera. Well, I'll tell you something. So, uh,
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: we fish and halbit little boats. Um, there's like certain
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: it's hard to bring a good sized halbitt into a
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: little teeny boat because everything is there's too much junk
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: in there. Anyways, Its like the average size or what's
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: a good size? At what point does a halbit become
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: annoying in a boat? Yea an eighteen foot boat? We're
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: talking like a like what what I grew up calling rowboats?
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Just like a like we use lund skiffs, very seaworthy,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: rock solid but just no frills, bench seats, open bow,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: aluminum rowboat and as we fish out of because we
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: need to be able to drag him up on the
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: beach when we leave. So it's gotta be big enough
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: for a couple of guys can carry it. That's as
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: big as a boat what we can have, Um, and
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: when you bring it, like to bring a fifty pound
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: halibit into that boat? Is if he's frisky um. It's
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: just a lot people on big help like people the gym,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: and break their legs, break their arms, break rods. They
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: go bonkers. So the thing we do to prevent him
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: from going bonkers is at us like smaller ones. You
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: gaff him and just drag him in a little bit bigger.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: You want to buy some time. And so we have
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: these harpoon shafts and have a detachable head on it
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: that's hooked to a cable leader that's hooked to a
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: rope that's hooked to a booty, And when the fish
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: comes up, you just jab it through the head and
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: this detachable head comes off. It's like a toggle, and
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: then throw the booty over the side of the out
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: and then the fishes on the line. Oftentimes this process
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: the fish comes unhooked from a jhook. But all of
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: a sudden, now your fishes harpooned and on a buoy,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: and that buys you all the time in the world.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: You can then do whatever you need to do. This
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: booty is probably size of the volleyball the buoy. To
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: blame the booty that I'm telling a story about, it's
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: about size. It's probably a little smaller in the basketball
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: easily easily fits into like easily fits into a five
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: gallon bucket. You probably fit two them in a five
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: gallon bucket. Inflatable buoy and the inflatable that's only like
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: two p s I or something. I mean, it's like
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: no real air pressure in him. Uh. And then what
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: you do is you can grab the rope and the
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: buoye's on it and you can pull the fish up.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: You can bleed it. You can just hang it there,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: wait until it stops thrashing it's bled. If it's like
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: the next stage up, you can kind of put a
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: rope around its tail. You can even tie its tail
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: so he's bent into a c and tie them up
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: like that and then bring him up in the boat
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: so he's not going bonkers. Anyhow, We're out fishing and
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I and we're fishing to spot. The weather is too
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: bad to go to the good spots. We have to
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: go to the shitty spots. And we're fishing the shitty
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: spot and it's shitty, and I'm like, let's go to
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: another shitty spot in the middle, go to the other
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: shitty spot. And I dropped down bam giant like a
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: big Halibit and eventually get out of the boat, and
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: we have the conversation we always have, which is like,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: you're not supposed to kill the big, huge halibit because
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: they're females, like once they gonna do certain size. Just
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: know they're an egg bearing female. They're like a reproductively
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: viable female. And we know that this. We have this
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: conversation like, yeah, but there's commercial longliners that work these
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: same waters, like people are hauling out metric tons of right,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: and all the people in the world, and everyone wants
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: to bring some HElib at home, and okay, let's kill it.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: This is every time him. The conversation goes the same way.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: Every time. We have this verbal acknowledgement that there's an
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: argentry made for not doing it, and then we justify
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: it with, well, why would we do something about global warming?
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: China is not right. We have that conversation, so we
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: decided to kill the fish. So it comes up and
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: it's just head, I mean, like never ending head. It's
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: just all head, like as deep down as you can
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: see it still it's head. And fits takes the harpoon
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: and sticks it in the head and it sounds and
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: the hook pops out the fish sounds. The booty goes
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: overboard like I've never seen a booey, like if you
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: got a hit in the head, but this boody has
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: been dead way. This booy goes overboard as the rope
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: runs out and the boy gone from the water surface,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: and I just gotta will sink and feeling and we're like,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: well it'll pop up. It'll have to pop up, you know,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: because actually they vanished now and then they come up
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: like ten seconds later. It three days later, it hadn't
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: popped up. Gone. He's you know they say hook line
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: and sinker, harpoon, had rope and booie. He sucked it down. Sorry,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: she you know what. My buddy fits was even making
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: a point to say she and her just to rub
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: it in. She sucked it down. And we sat there
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: for an hour with waiting. Went to get binoculars because
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: we went that far from our shack, went to get binoculars,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: come back out, spend a couple more hours, then we
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: started doing concentric circles. The next morning we're right back
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: out there, never to be seen again. How how much
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: do you think that fish wade? Maybe? How big can
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: hallib it get? And the state records like five forty
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: or four ninety it was. I know they get over
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: five pounds. I don't know the state the state records
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: and nothing like that. And how old is a hell
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: of it to weigh that much? You have to look
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: that up. Yeah, I don't know their growth rates. The
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: females get big. You really shouldn't be doing this to
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: Hall of It, but we did it. Did you talk
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: to Ron Layton about the whole experience? No? No, but
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: I did call a couple of people. But the best
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: theory is Danny's theory. One guy called it a halibut cat,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: and he said it'll pop up, like he said, I mean,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: I've never heard of one being gone more in ten minutes.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: But just hang tight, I said, when it pops up
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: as a pop up far away, he goes, I've always
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: been shocked how close by it popped up, because I
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: think they go straight down then the booty flows them
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: straight back up. So he said, just hanging tight. I'm like,
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: why aren't you been sitting here an hour? And he's like,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: I keep looking. Danny's theory is this, and this is
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: the one I think is correct. I think it sucked
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: it down down in the air pressure collapse the booty,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: the water pressure collapse, the booby just so now it's
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: just living with a booy. I don't think it's dead
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: with a booby. The other theory is that it got
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: hung up on something. I don't think it got hung
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: up on something, and I think it went down the
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: booty collapse. I think it sucked it down a hundred
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: feet down or whatever. The booty burst collapsed, it would
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: be deflated. But would you pull a rock fish up
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: what's its swim bladder? Do? Yeah? Coming out the goals
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: gets big going down the it just would have He
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: thinks it just deflated it. Maybe even pop the cork
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: on the buoy because it's an inflatable booth a threaded
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: cork in it. And now that fish just died a slow,
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: painful death at the bottom of the ocean, dragging around
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: my deflated buoy. We'll continue to talk about letting those
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: big ones live, and I might be more inclined. Now.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I just have a question though, about like really really depressing. Yeah,
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: that that was that was kind of a downer. We
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: go ahead with your question. No, just you know, back
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: to uh, if a lot of other people do it? Whatever,
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: it is that makes it okay? Yeah, because it's like
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: I mean, if you bring something out to its logical argument,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: you look at the end result of everyone doing it
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: this way or everyone doing it doing X the the
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: other way. I just well, let me tell you, let
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: me put it this way. So we get a lot
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: of questions about hunting ethics and fishing ethics and all this, right,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: and a point I've settled out and I think I
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: think I say to people often it's like a great
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: start with ethics, a great start, and maybe it is
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: the end of your journey. Just do what's legal. Don't
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: the law, Like, learn the law and stick to it.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: How does is not just state regulated, it's federally regulated
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: because they move their migratory so we like share management
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: authority with Canada. We have federal and state regulations on halibu.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Those halibus say that as a non resid or non
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: resident or resident recreational angler, you're allowed to halibate of
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: any size every day. Juxtaposed that with this year, officially
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: it went from one yellow I rock fisher year to
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: zero yellow I rock fisher year. You can have to
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: LINKD one in the inch bracket, one in the overt
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: in bracket annual limit black cod eight per year, four
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: per day. Right, they're not shy about telling you not
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: to do ship. They're not shy about it. They're not like,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: we really shouldn't, but every we'll be disappointed. They're very
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: king Salmon. They will at the drop of a hat
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: say sorry, boys, even you people that have booked to
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: King Salmon trip, Sorry, King Salmon season ends tonight. Tough ship.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: So you're allowed to held it per day, any size,
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: any size, any sex. Yes, Okay. So if you look
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: at the management authority and you say, man, these guys
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: don't mess around. They're willing to do some insane ship
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: like closed seasons, unexpectedly overnight. Uh, who do I? Who
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: do I go? Where do I pick up my cues from?
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: But then you're conflicted because these large females always have
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: eggs in them, always have eggs in them, are important
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: for the the or so I've been told, charter fisherman,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: if you're fishing with a guide, if you're a recreational
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: fisherman fishing with a guide, you can't keep those big
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: ones because they want to maintain the just reducing reducing
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: a stress around the fish, but commercially you can't got
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: it like longliners can. If you talk to the captains
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: out there, they'll tell you that exactly the same amount
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: of big old females are getting killed and brought in.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: It just is they're just letting other groups do it.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: So it's pretty sticky subject up there. Yeah. And the
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: other thing is you can go catch small ones and
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: then people will be pissed because you're not letting them
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: get big. It's a real minefield. I mean ethics, you know,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: it's a whole field of study for reason. All right,
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: So that happened. What else? Give me your give me?
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: Like a me losing his fish isn't on the show.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: This is after we stopped filming and I was just
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: hanging around my family. But the deep drop in his
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: on the show, so stay tuned. And then Yanni was
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: our little startling adventure is going to be on the show.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: That's a lot of fun. Oh, it's so fun, very beautiful,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: very educational. It falls into my little bucket of doing
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: stuff that makes me a little nervous, a little dancing
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: at weddings, yeah for sure. Yeah, except we didn't do
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: any shots before we jumped into that fifty degree water,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: which wasn't bad and just becoming all that. The training
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: that we did with Greg and Alex last year in California,
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: even though it was a whole year later, it really
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: paid off. I was so much more comfortable just getting
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: in there. It was cold, but you warm up in
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: like five minutes when that layer of water warms up
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: in your suit, and uh, I didn't quite feel like
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Darth Vader, you know, the whole time we were in
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: the water whatever, it was a couple of hours. Um,
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: it's beautiful down there. And it just all came back,
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: you know, the whole friends old technique of popping my ears.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: Like the first time I got down there and I
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: felt it, I was like, oh, yeah, I remember to
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: do this, and then my ears popped, and yeah. I
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: just went about our business. I didn't find any scalps,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: which was a bummer, but it's one of those things
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna have to look for. It's like Morrel's,
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: It's like, uh, it's a learned thing. I think. It's
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: like I remember being shipped here on the hillside. I
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: remember being shocked when I saw my first rock scallop,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: and then now I just kind of know what I'm
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: looking for. But I remember being like, oh my god,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: that's one, and then you wanted like how many of
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: those did I pass? Up? Right, it's kind of that
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: feeling a quick tibet on depth and the booey and
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: all that and what Greg Fonds, the spear fisherman. He
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: was saying that he dives in that that temperature water
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: with a seven mill suit because the suit compresses so
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: by the time you're down to um when you're at depth,
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: you're in like a two mill suit or a three
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: mill suit. You see what I'm saying, I do, but
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: go on, it's interesting. Uh No, I just really enjoyed that. Uh. Historically,
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: Ricky did too highlight for picking up those c cucumbers,
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: and that is definitely the beginners, Like that's the gateway
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: for free diving, right there are those c cucumbers. They
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: don't get away, they can't get away from you know what.
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: I'm hanging out like one or two and then all
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: of a sudden you go down and you're like, ah,
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: there's ten in a row. I was out of breath
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: most of the time. I wasn't doing a very good
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: job hold my breath. Uh what what what did you have? What?
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: Were your impressions just in general closing thought of the
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: whole shoot, Yes, the trip and everything. Oh, I mean,
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: I think the fish Shack is easily one of my
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: favorite places. Uh it rains all the time, which is
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: pretty terrible for doing camera work, but um, I wouldn't
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: trade it. But I'm always amazed how I don't know,
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: just those coastal conditions out on the water. It's raining,
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: it's cold, it's fifty degrees, it's uh yeah, it's it's
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: fantastic though, thumbs up, thumbs up. You've got a couple
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: of drone shots while we were up, Oh man, some
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: beautiful drone stuff, which makes my drone enthusiasm very very high.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: We we had to write. We wrote a song about
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: Rick as a drone enthusiast. It's, um, he's got that itch.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: His name is Rich, but it's actually Rick is how
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: the song goes, so pretty good lyrics there. All right,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: let's close out with another robust plug for Ben hold On.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: I got a little comment on you know, everybody says,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: how of it? Just like pulling up a piece of plywood.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: Everybody says, everybody says everything. Yeah, Well, I'd like to
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: just comment on that and I was thinking about that
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: fighting a few how but I caught there a couple
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: of weeks ago, and like, this feels like any other
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: fish you're pulling off the bottom, head shakes. Yeah, if
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: you didn't know it was a hall of it, it
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: could be a big fat grouper. It could be a
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: I don't know, think of another fish that just they
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: don't go for screaming long runs at least I've never experience.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: It's that, you know, because you've got such heavy tackle. Yeah. Oh,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: when you're jigging, you already jigging your jigging way up
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: over your head and also bamnam and then you buckle
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: in and that head just going boo, almost like it
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: like hurt, like if he was hitting your head with
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: his head to knock you out. Oh yeah, they put
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: up a good all that oh burn door, what suck?
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: So I like Alibet for that. They were really fun
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: to catch this time again, I've got a little more experience,
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: so I think I just I lost one. So I
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: feel like I had a good, pretty good hitting catch
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: to hook to bite to hook ratio, which is nice.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: You know, I didn't let any go, But coming home
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: and eating them, you know, I'm not like huge on
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: the holb but usually for eating them, they're just it's
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: just like a vessel, you know, like everybody describes, right,
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: they're just it's me. It's there, doesn't have a lot
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: of flavor. Everybody likes it. But I decided to blacken
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: one with that blackening. So talk about that that stuff
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: that we got in the pint. Yeah, Chef John uh
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: White maybe is his last name, I can't remember. Just
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: like Instagram buddies, we've never hung out, but he sent us.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: He asked we wanted something. I said sure, so he
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: sent us like six pints of his blackening spice. I'm
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: telling you follow his directions. Don't put too much on
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: both sides, a little bit of oil cast iron, and
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: then when you flip it after you see her, the
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: first side you put in like depending how much fish
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: you got in there, but you know, up to half
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: stick of butter, and then just start basting, turning down
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: like low and start basting that seared side with the butter.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: And after maybe five minutes when was getting to be done,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: a little bit of white wine. Squeeze a lemon in there,
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: keep basting prime prime eating right there. Yeah, yeah, I'll
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: give you something it's been I thought i'd go through
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: that pint wicked quick, but I barely have a dent
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: in it. So alright, one last quick, robust plug for Bent.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: A much better show about fishing than what we just had.
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: That was real tangential. I will say, of all the
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: projects fishing projects I've worked on over the years, I
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: am more excited about this one than anything else I've
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: ever done. So I just I just hope I think
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: Miles would agree. Um, people have fun with this podcast,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: are entertained by and kind of occasionally walk away going
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: what the hell did he just say? Is kind of
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: my goal? And not because the sound quality is poor, No,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: not at all. Know if that If that's the problem,
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: take that up with Phil. Uh. If it's a content problem,
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: you can you can, you can write to us. Yeah,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: it's gonna be produced by meat eaters best exactly, it
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: won't be any sounds fill the engineer. When can our
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: audiences listen to the podcast every single Friday? Dropping earlier
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: early in the morning. If you if you are up
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: earlier than this drops, then uh, either you have really
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: small children or you're doing more fun things that I am.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: I was gonna say, well, you fish more than Miles
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: and Night. Yeah, exactly, all right, thanks everyone,
