- 0:20SPEAKER_03: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Tortured Fans Department podcast.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Sean Boyle, and joining me today is the gruesome toosome.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: The cousins are back.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: Boys, how are you?
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Doing great, Sean.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Always great to be back.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Somehow I'm always with Shane, which is whatever.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: But uh, it's great to see your face per usual.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Sean, Jeremy.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Hello?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is a form of cruel and unusual punishment putting me on with Jeremy every single week, despite my constant request to have some new blood on here.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Um I mean who who what what's the alternative?
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Michael Collins?
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: No ricochet shots, please.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: That is that is that is my uh that is my pulse.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: I do want them pulse.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: No, these two go together like bread and butter.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Have to have them both.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Can't have one without the other.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: A couple opening questions, orders of business to get into before we get through our agenda for today.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: First thing, are you guys enjoying we finally got a taste of spring here on the East Coast?
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: It was a wonderful weather weekend.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Are you guys enjoying the weather and is it here to stay?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: It is here to stay.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I am enjoying it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Uh took in some uh some Maryland softball today.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Uh we didn't get it done against Rutgers, but I still enjoyed being outside.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Uh looking at the forecast for this week.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: It's pickleball weather.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So gonna dust off the pickleball shoes.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Um get it going.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I think we deserve this kind of weather, especially with the winner we had coming off for all of us, but I, you know, I hate to be the bearer of bad news.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: March can get cold.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I know some of these uh MLB games at night in the beginning of the season can get kind of chilly, but you know, we are heading in the right direction.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Excited for that, and uh today was uh definitely glorious.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: To quote our favorite pop girl, I'm not sure we're out of the woods yet, but we're at least a little bit closer, and we got a taste of it this weekend, so that was good.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: What also occurred this weekend was daylight savings, which I am not a huge math guy, but it feels like we don't need daylight savings to me.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: It feels like if we just let the clocks be, since we go one forward, one backward each time of year, I feel like if we just let them be, I think everything would work out.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: Is that correct or no?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I don't and never have uh understood daylight savings.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Um I'd love to know why.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I it would be a quick Google search, um which I have not done.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: The results were inconclusive on my Google.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: It seemed like we could do it, but there's for some reason we still do this every year.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Is it uh for the farmers, maybe?
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: Is that I think I don't know if that's actually true.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: I think that might be an old wives' tale.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: I think I think the state of Arizona doesn't do daylight scale correct.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: No, they don't.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Arizona and Hawaii both don't.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: So how do we get on that plan?
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: Because I I it's just it's kind of a circus to me.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: I don't like losing the hour's sleep.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: It's uh it puts me in a bad mood usually.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: And I'm also not sure that I like it being dark longer in the morning and late light longer at night.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure which one I prefer.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: I would just prefer that the time doesn't change.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: I don't think that's too much to ask.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Gun to my head.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Give me the extra hour of daylight after work.
- 3:39unknown: Yeah.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: On the back end.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Actually, not even gun to my head.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: It I would say that regardless of whether there was gun to my head or not.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: No one's holding you hostage.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no one's holding you hostage either.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: The agenda for today is going to be obviously a college basketball-centric episode.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: It is March, as you all know.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: We finally made it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: It's the best time of the year.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Some would say it's the most wonderful time of the year, next Sunday being Selection Sunday.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: That is my Christmas.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: So uh super excited about that.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: So we'll dive into all things college basketball.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: We're also going to get back to some of our weekly segments.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: We have the Tortured Fans of the Week, we have the best thing we saw, and we will wrap up the show with some recommendations.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: I think, fellas, we would be remiss if we did not start with some tickets that have already been punched into the big dance.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: These obviously come from a lot of the small conferences where they play their conference tournaments a week ahead of the big conferences, which I kind of like doing.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: I think it gives them some more TV exposure, they don't get lost in the sauce, opens it up for them a bit, and they get a week off to kind of prepare and relax and get ready for the tournament.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: So let's start in the Northeast Conference where Long Island University has clinched the automatic bid from here.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: I'll be honest, is this the same school as LIU Brooklyn that it used to be referred to?
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Did they drop the Brooklyn?
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I think they're LIU now, yeah.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I could I guess I could be wrong, but I think it's the same.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: It's the same universal uh rebrand uh for the boys, no doubt.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: I just wanted to make sure it wasn't an arch rival that I was unaware of.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And I guess that it's a good point, too, because again, I'm not a huge I I know what I'm talking about geography-wise, but Long Island and Brooklyn are two separate.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I don't think Long Island's in Brooklyn.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Am I right?
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Am I right?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Is that a fact?
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Very correct.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: They're two very different places, yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: So honestly, a confusing title that they they that's a good rebrand.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what a rebrand.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: How we settled on the nickname being the sharks is another question, though.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: That's a little concerning.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: I'm all in on the sharks.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: They also they sort of just go by their letters.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Like, I think like seven years ago, ECU said, we're not East Carolina University, we're ECU, which makes no sense.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: It feels like that with LIU2, like it's it's just the letters.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: It's no like, like, yeah, we know it's Long Island, but like they all the time just go by the letters, which can get a little confusing, especially in this case, but I do think it's the same uh institution.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't I'm not sure Long Island's reached the point where they can just go by letters or tell us what they go by.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: I think we we still can control what they go by.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: But congratulations to them.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: I couldn't tell you a single thing about their team.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: I don't like that they're named the sharks.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: I know Shane, you said you're in on that, but to me, I don't think uh Long Island has ever seen a shark.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: And I could be wrong on that as well.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: I'm pretty loose with the facts here, but I don't know where they got that from.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, stop.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I know the Jersey Shore had a couple of sharks a few years ago.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Um so no doubt in my mind that the sharks, if they could get to New Jersey, they'd get the Long Island.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Um in defense of the Sharks, their free throw celebration in their crowd is Finns up and they go, uh, Finns up.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Well, that's something to monitor as we get to the tournament.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: They might be playing one of the first four games as well, if I had to guess.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: They're likely to be a 16 or 15 seed, so good chance they're in Dayton.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: But congrats to LIU.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: I shouldn't say their full name, it's like Voldemort.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: He must not be named, just say LIU.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: But now move to the Atlantic Sun, where the Kings are Queens.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Shout out Doug Heffernan.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: Anyone catch any of this action in the Atlantic Sun?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: I did not catch the championship game here in the Atlantic Sun.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: I will say, congrats to Queens.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Uh I believe their nickname is the Royals, so very fitting.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Queens Royals.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: We got the Sharks and the Royals with tickets punched.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, but no, shout out to Queens.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: They transitioned up into D1 in 2022.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: So four years later, they're going dancing.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: What a story.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I actually worked a basketball camp at Queens College in probably 2017, and it was one of the nicest facility basketball facilities I've been in.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: And honestly, all their athletic facilities were top-notch.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: And I was asking around, I was like, Have I never heard of this school?
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: And I think they were D3 or D2 at the time.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: That's why.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: So it makes sense that they've now transitioned.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: And I think this is the first or second year that they're actually eligible to play in the tournament because you have to wait two or three years when you move up to D1 before you can partake.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: So congrats to them.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: I love that they're the Royals.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: A built-in anthem too, Lord Song.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: It will never be right.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Great there.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: As I said, elite facilities, and also in their uh swimming facilities, I believe they're known to be a bit of a swimming program as well.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: They had tons of pictures of Ryan Lochti and Michael Phelps training training there in the offseason back in the day.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: So I guess Queens is a hot spot for Olympic swimmers.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: That's the important stuff when you fill out your bracket.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: As long as you don't let Lochti out uh after hours.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Keep an eye on Lochti.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Keep them locked in.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Keep Lofty locked in, no doubt.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: To your point, Sean, too.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Uh a little bit of an upset Central Arkansas, the one seed.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: But Queens, I think, I think that shows, you know, they didn't come out of nowhere.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: They were a three-seed in the A Sun.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: So good for them.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: They put themselves in this position.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: And uh in the regular season, of course, uh, they take care of business in the tournament for them, for their league.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: So uh definitely a very strong return of investment with their basketball team over the last two, three years.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: And again, we're loose with the facts here, but I'm gonna go on on record and say this is their first Division I men's basketball tournament appearance coming up in a couple weeks.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: So congrats to Queens.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about the Big South.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: High Point edged out Winthrop in kind of a back and forth game.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Winthrop started the second half on a 16-1 run, a lot of energy in the building, and then High Point eventually went on an even bigger run and put them away.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: I have been to High Point before, and let me just say this, fellas.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: That college is like Disneyland for adults.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: I would sign up to go there in a second.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: They had you're walking around there, and first of all, it was manicured like it was Augusta National.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: Every blade of grass was trimmed the exact same length.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: They had classical music playing out of the light posts.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Every building was open access, come in.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: They they were inviting, they were handing out bottles of water and snacks around campus, making sure you were having a good day.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: I didn't, I was just walking around with my friend.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: I didn't have a clue what we were getting ourselves into, but I couldn't have better things to say about high points campus, and therefore I have them underlined as a potential upset team in March.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Did either of you guys see any high point this season?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: That would be a no from me, but I do respect the high point program.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Uh no, it's interesting.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: They their coach last year took them to the tournament, uh, Alan Huss went to Creighton as their head coach in waiting.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: So they elevated their associate head coach, uh, Flynn Clayman, and now he's taking them back dancing.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: So uh sign of a strong program right there that you can lose your head coach um and still keep it still keep it rolling.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So shout out to High Point.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: High Point season ticket holder for the last 20 years.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I I I saw this coming for several years now.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Uh I yeah, like like Sean, they're a school that has like money.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know if there's a story behind it, but like they put it towards their students, like there's like steakhouses, pools, and they've really put in a lot towards athletics.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Um they they were NIL before NAL, I guess, for the students.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: So uh they uh they're a popular school, I think, for a lot of northern folks up here that go down there too.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, good for high point.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: They're uh put their money where their mouth is, or their mouth where their money is, and it's uh it worked, it's worked for them.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Jeremy, I don't know where the money comes from for High Point, but you are correct in saying that.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: So I don't want to get into the background if it's some wrongdoings, if it's a liberty situation.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: I I don't want to endorse that.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: What I will say is you're not wrong.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: They treat their students to steak dinners.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: There's a pool everywhere you look.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: You turn your head around, there's another pool.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I stumbled into an academic building with just a golf simulator as you were coming in.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: They said, Hey, hit a few.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: I couldn't get enough of it.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: We got a tour of the basketball arena because one of the lovely people that was like a Disney Park princess came up and said, Hey, what are you guys interested in?
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: I said, Hey, we're basketball guys.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: They they let us write in like we were coaching the next year.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: We saw the arena was state of the art, just brand new.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: It looked like a library from the outside.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: So I would imagine all of this to say they have a lot more money than the rest of the schools in the Big South.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: But hey, if you're gonna make the tournament every year, well done.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: We're just gonna clap our hands and see what you do next week.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: Next up, the Missouri Valley, Arch Madness.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: Arch Madness never disappoints.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: I feel like every year you can just put a pin that Arch Madness is gonna be fun to watch.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: There's always good teams in the Missouri Valley.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: I uh feel like Northern Iowa, I think it's been since 2019, they have not made the tournament.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: And they used to be the team from the Missouri Valley.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: They were kind of always a staple.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: So happy to see them get back in the dance.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: I was pleasantly surprised to see Ben Jacobson still the ball coach.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: He was there back when Paul Jesperson hit the half-court shot.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: He's been there since 2002.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: Can you believe that?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I didn't even think he was that old.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: That's wild.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's gotta be, yeah, 2002.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: He's gotta be one of the longest tenured coaches in uh in D1, the same school.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking off the top of my head.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Izzo.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Um probably should be.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Shout out to them.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Uh if you're gonna ask if I saw this game, the answer is no.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Again, all the games today I kind of missed outside uh at the University of Maryland.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Uh we also had a basketball game.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: We won't talk about what happened in that one.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Uh so I missed all these conference championship games today.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Uh but I do love Arch Madness.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I watched this game.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: This was the one game I actually caught today.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: And Northern Iowa has a senior guard, Trey Campbell, who kind of carried them.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: I think he had 24, and he was just a killer.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: Anytime they needed a bucket, he gave them one.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: And then we had Kevin Harlan on the call, and it's always nice hearing Kevin Harlan, Bill Raftery, Grant Hill, that trio back in action, because that's when you have the big game feel, that's the Final Four.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: It has a Final Four feel to it.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: With CBS, obviously, it's on the most watched network, America's most watched network.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Kevin Harlan hit us with a Bond, Leon Bond line today after one of their players named Leon Bond dunked.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: And oh man, that was incredible.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I think Harlan is my favorite play-by-play guy.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: He's he's electric.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: You feel it coming through, you feel it coming through the TV.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: There's nothing there's nothing fake with my either.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: He's a fan, but he knows the sport, obviously.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: It's a good combination.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: He's not forcing anything.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Northern Iowa, I always think of our guy, Shane's guy, Ali Faroechmanesh.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Who's now?
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Allie Faroque.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Uh now he's coaching at Colorado State, I think, which is a nice little full circle in a way moment, uh, which is cool.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, it's uh it's always fun when uh Northern Iowa's in the tournament.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: They've done it before.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: And especially, yeah, they're um Ben Jacobson, he's uh 55 now.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: So he was a young pup back in the day.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: It still is kind of like not not young pup, but like still, I guess on the you know, younger-ish side, considering yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Good for that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Something about the purple and yellow pops too in the tournament.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: It always catches your eye.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: You're like, okay, there's one to watch.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: That's potential upset always with northern Iowa, and really any team that comes from Missouri Valley, that's a quality conference that usually fares pretty well in the tournament.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: We've seen Loyal Chicago and the likes come from there and make runs.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: So I think that'll be one to watch next week.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, true.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: That's yeah, that's where Wichita State made their hay before they moved to the dumpster fire that is the American.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: I I also have to say, Bill Raftery, I'm he's just timeless.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: This guy hit us with a lingerie on the floor, and it just never gets old.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: I met Raftery once, Shane.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: You might remember he came, he was friends with Fran Dumfey, who is a fellow LaSalle man, and he came to watch one of our practices or shoot arounds at Temple, and Dumpf just told me to go upstairs and let somebody in the building, and I didn't know who it was.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: And I walk up Leocor Center stairs, and right at the front door is Bill Raftery.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: He says, How are you, sir?
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: And then his only question for me was, Is there a smoking section?
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: And I said, Honestly, honestly, I don't know, Bill.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: Uh I think you could probably do it right here if you wanted.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: And he said, the answer is no if you don't ask.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: So Raftery's a legend.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: I'm so happy to be hearing more of him the next couple of weeks.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: Lastly, in terms of tickets punch, let's talk about the Ohio Valley just quickly.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: I know Jeremy has a victory lap to take here.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: Tennessee state wins.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Jar, I know nothing.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: I I don't know anything about this team.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: Can you tell me who their ball coach is?
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Well, their ball coach is, of course, Nolan Smith, uh, Duke legend, college basketball icon.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Uh been associate uh assistant coaches at Duke at Louisville for a little bit, and now he's a head coach at Tennessee State.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: They're going to they're in the tournament now.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Great for them.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, it might be.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: I think Nolan Smith was gonna be a head coach somewhere else soon.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: This might kind of sped it up even more.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: But for Tennessee State, you you you play with who you have at the moment and you worry about the other stuff when it happens, so good for them.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: They're they're in.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: And I think uh Smith might move on sooner, even than others may have expected.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: But they're uh they're going uh dancing in his first year too, as head coach, I believe, at Tennessee State.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: I could be wrong, but I think it's his first year there at the helm.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: So pretty impressive uh job that they did there uh with that team.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: The fighting Robert Covingtons, I believe.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: That is where Roko went.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: That is true.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Tennessee state.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: I think also, again, loose with the facts here.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: I think their logo isn't it just the same thing?
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: Isn't their logo just the same as LSU's?
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: I think it's like the same color scheme.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, definitely called TSU.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, maybe it is.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: It's very similar, I think.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe they're bobcats, the something.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: No, I I was 100% right.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: It it's their logo is an LSU tiger.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Their T S U.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: It's it looks the exact same.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: They just changed and even the T they made look like an L.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: The T that the lettering looks like LSU I've ever seen.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's bad.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a low c everything's in lowercase, too.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: That's oh my god, that's so bad.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: As a as a person who had to take a few graphics courses back in the day.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: That's that bad that's so you can design a better logo jar.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, give me a little Photoshop, give me a little inspiration, some motivation, and I'll give you a cool looking tiger.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: Alright, the chunk of the podcast is going to be spent today doing a conference tournament preview for all the action we're about to see this coming week.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: It is championship week.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: Let's start with the ACC.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Jerry just took a victory lap for Nolan Smith.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: I'm not even sure you're allowed to claim him after his failed Louisville coaching stint.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: But uh the favorite in this conference is Duke.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Some key injuries for Duke might make this tournament a little bit more worth watching.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: I don't know if that'll be enough for any team to actually upset Duke.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: What are your guys' thoughts on this one?
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Is there any team that could give Duke a run for the money, or are there any bubble teams to watch out for?
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd say if I had to pick a couple teams that might potentially give give Duke some trouble uh once we get to the semifinals, the finals.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Uh first and foremost, I'd say the University of Virginia.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: We've talked about Ryan Odom on this spot before.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, he's just done a tremendous job in year one.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, I believe they're the two seed in this bracket.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: So if they play Duke, it would be in a championship.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Another team that's playing good basketball from this league, Miami, the Hurricanes.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Uh Jay Lucas, another coach in year one who's just done a phenomenal job.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Um, put together a really good roster.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I remember this time last year, right after the Duke North Carolina game, he, I believe, skipped his postseason and went to Miami to start building this roster.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Um, and seems to have paid off as they they've got a good crew this year.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Again, these tournaments are wild.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Some teams uh, you know, might be all in trying to win.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Some teams feel like, all right, this is just house money.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: We we've got the the actual tournament coming next week, so we're not gonna go all out.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Um it'll be interesting to see Duke's mindset.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Um see how this ACC tournament unfolds.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like Louisville too.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: I guess as an idea, nice recent win against Miami.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: We'll see with them.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Um do we know Caleb Wilson's status in terms of how for the year.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: That is big news out of the ACC.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: He broke his right hand while recovering from a left hand injury.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: He broke his right thumb dunking a basketball in individual drills without anyone around.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: So a disaster for North Carolina.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Why are you smiling, Jerry?
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: What?
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Jerry's.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: I wasn't only smiling.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: I was like, I was like, uh like like that kind of thing.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Like when like you hear like an instant stop.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: It was a grin from ear to ear.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Um he looked like the Grinch.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: I will say uh North Carolina, that's devastating, in my opinion.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: For their long-term prospects.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: I thought they were a team that could definitely make a second weekend.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: And potentially if it broke right, maybe maybe beyond.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: With his upside.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Now I just don't see that happening.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: I think they're a candidate for an upset for the casual fan who sees UNC, sees a nice number next to their name, might just pick them all the way through without knowing that Calebless and news.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: So, Jarr, I'm glad you brought that up.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: Are there any bubble teams in the ACC that kind of need a couple of wins in this tournament or no?
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: SMU, Cal.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: I don't know how to feel those teams are so weird because they have a few nice wins, but they're so they're they're just odd.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to make of them.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: But I guess they're technically on the bubble.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: What part in?
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: First four, first four in or first four out.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I I I'll leave that to Lenardi, I guess, to start off, but I guess they're on bubble watch for sure, at least those two teams.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're interesting because, like you said, Jared, they're teams that aren't usually in the bubble conversation.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Uh SMU and Cal.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: SMU had a good run with uh Larry with uh Larry Brown and uh and the mad scientist uh Jack.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, he was nuttier than a cashew.
- 23:15unknown: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Um but they've been kind of searching to return to relevance for the past few years, and uh and then Cal, yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: I mean they had you know the Jalen Brown year, but it's been a while since they've been you know in a bubble position.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Um so we'll see what those teams do.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Uh Virginia Tech is another one I'll throw in.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: I think they're on the wrong side of the bubble looking up, so they've got to make a really sizable run to uh make the right side of the bubble.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: Good kid bits on the ACC.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: I guess all of us will pick Duke just to be safe, and then potentially you guys name some teams that could give them a hard time if they are as banged up as they could be heading into this tournament.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: I know that their priority will be to get right for the NCAA tournament, like you mentioned, Shane.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Let's move on to the A-10.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: We had to touch on the A10 quickly because we're just A10 guys.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: That's that's where we come from.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: And it's a good conference this year.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: Multi-mid league A10.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: I think we're definitely safe in saying that St.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Louis is a tournament team.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: It looks like VCU is on the right side of the bubble.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: Probably a luck.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: If it was if I was to left bracket, they'd certainly go back.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: I think they're in.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, hey, listen, we'll put them in.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: Put them in Sharpie.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: And then there's a couple of other interesting teams that could wreak some havoc in this conference tournament, potentially get three teams out of the Atlantic 10.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Namely, I would say George Mason and Dayton.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: What do you guys think?
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no doubt.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, first of all, we are huge Atlantic 10 conference guys here.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, but we also know that the committee sometimes isn't.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Uh so VCU, while I'd love for them to be a lock, I don't think they are.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that they get into the city.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: I was I didn't want to throw the L-word out there until Jeremy did because we know how that committee operates, Shane.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: They the committee hates the Atlantic 10 for some reason.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: Uh they hate the little guy.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Always have, always will.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Uh St.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Louis, it's interesting because they've been leaking a bit of oil recently.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, they definitely are a lock, but they are not playing their best basketball.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Whereas VCU, I think right now, is playing better basketball than St.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Louis.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: So if they those two teams met in the uh A-10 championship, I think that would be a thrilling matchup.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, but part of me wants those two teams to not win the championship so the A-10 could get potentially a third team in.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: And like you said, George Mason and Dayton are both teams very capable of winning the A-10 tournament.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you don't want them to get in they don't you don't want George Mason or Dayton to get in the tournament in place of VCU.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: You don't want to see the community do that old swap that they've done before where it's like, hey, VCU is gonna be in, but George Mason won the conference tournament, so they took VCU's spot.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: When really VCU shouldn't have been on the chopping block.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: So, Shane, I do agree with you 100%.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Let's let's get a third team in the mix.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: It's like it's always sunny when a cat gets stuck in the wall and they toss a second cat in the wall.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: Let's toss a third cat in the wall and see how many we can get out.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Well said.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: It does seem like if there is a conference, a mid-major conference that get you know the praise and glory with the representation this year, it seems like it's the A10 over the American by a long shot.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, maybe maybe you guys disagree.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: That's just what I mean.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: The American dog shit.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: It would be the West Coast Conference, would be the other one I wanna go.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like right, sure.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Mountain West, maybe.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Mountain West, potentially, yeah.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: Uh I am gonna go out on the limb here and I'm gonna make a bold prediction that neither St.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Louis nor VCU win this conference tournament.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: I think we do see either George Mason or Dayton get the job done, and I think that will be awesome for the league as a whole.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: So, if nothing else on the A-10, let's throw it over to the Big East.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: Kind of a snoozer conference this year, outside of those two top teams.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: You've had Villanova kind of going about their business, not doing anything special, but firmly in the tournament.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: And then you've had the two Titans at the top, Yukon and St.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: John's, who have split the season battle.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: Most recently, Yukon embarrassed St.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: John's in Hartford.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: I'm assuming we get round three in the garden between these two, but do you guys have any other expectations for the Big East?
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's the Big East has not been a very strong conference this year, especially outside of those teams, namely UConn and St.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: John's that you mentioned.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: If there's one team that I could see making a bit of a run, uh, I think pretty clearly the fourth best team in the conference is Seton Hall.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Um, they are just a tough, gritty team led by Shaheen Holloway.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Uh they will make your life miserable when they're playing defense.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, the problem for them is their life is miserable when they are on offense.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Uh they have a very hard time putting the ball in the basket.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: It's almost like they have five Jeremies out there when they're on offense.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Fun story for I wasn't I wasn't gonna tell this story, but we might as well get into it.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Uh Jeremy came out to visit us in Lexington once, and we were playing some basketball.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: This Mickey Mouse court.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: We were doing a little little game where you know you had to make seven out of ten.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: So me and Sean get up there.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: You know, uh I think we both make seven seven out of ten.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: It's Jarrett's turn.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: He starts shooting.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: We we realize quickly he's not making seven shots.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: So then we started, we adjusted the goalpost on this one, and we said if he hits the rim, then that counts as a make.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Uh so I don't even think he hit the rim seven times.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: Anyway, that's what I mean.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Uh that's kind of like watching St.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: John or uh kind of like watching Seton Hall.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: It did look a bit like Michael Scott.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: Nothing but net.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: Nothing but net when he was practicing in the office.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Uh Jeremy, I wasn't gonna tell that story on air.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: A swish is a swish.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: It just has to make the noise.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: All right, I'll I don't think uh it is a shade that Nova really is a lock.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're in the in the biggies, I don't think they beat UConn.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: They haven't played them well.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: I don't think they beat St.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: John's.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: And yeah, Seton Hall.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Maybe Creighton with McDermott.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: His what's it what's up with his status?
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: I heard something that he's gonna leave or retire.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure if it's either leave or retire, but uh maybe Creighton can make a little noise, but I don't know.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Well, if Jerry, if you were listening earlier, um Creighton hired high points coach from last year, Huss, as their head coach in waiting.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Sleep at the wheel.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: It's tough.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: It's tough to be a Jeremy Good rider sometimes.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I and and this is why this is why I'd say I'd love to do this pod uh with someone not named Jeremy Good every once in a while.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: It is tough, it is tough to listen to like two, three minutes of high point talk.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: No offense, high point, good for you, but like, oh my god, you rattle through some of these teams that like make it how like how many minutes.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: He does it during the NCAA tournament now with Duke, and he just doesn't care about the little guy.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: Don't get me started on Miami of Ohio with that, but uh yeah, I think between I think it was between uh UConn or the Johnnies.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Good rubber match.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Um obviously split series so far.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Uh it'll be good to see a third.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: If if it happens, assuming it happens, I think it'll happen.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Alright, let's talk about the Big Ten.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Try try to pay attention here, Jeremy.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: We're not asking what we're gonna do.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: These are the good teams.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: So disrespectful.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: The high points are what make March.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: Uh can anyone beat Michigan?
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: That's the that's the big that's the million-dollar question here in the Big Ten.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Do I think that anyone will beat Michigan in the Big Ten tournament?
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: My answer to that question would be no.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, but there are certainly teams who on any given day, you know, could theoretically beat Michigan.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: I think uh Michigan State, they played a tough game against Michigan today.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: If they, you know, if that's a matchup in uh, let's say the the semifinals next week, I could see that going Michigan State's way.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think Illinois is a tough team to prepare for just because they are the best offensive team in the country.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Um and they just play a style of basketball that you you don't really run into.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: They they just have gigantic freaks on their team who can all shoot as well.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Um so they're a tough team.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: And then I don't I would never pick Wisconsin to beat Michigan in a Big Ten tournament setting, but I will say uh Wisconsin is playing solid basketball at the moment, and they did beat Michigan at Michigan earlier this year, so maybe it's something where they just have their number.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't uh like Shane said, it wouldn't be a surprise if maybe Michigan State, maybe Nebraska.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: I feel like they peaked a little too early uh this year, which is good in subways because you know they they came uh to the big boy table, but they couldn't, you know, stay seated.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: They had to go back down to the kids table.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Uh they finished they finished second in the Big Ten.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think they're still a top ten team.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: I thought they were they finished second.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, they did second.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: I thought uh Michigan State was second and they were third.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was yeah, whatever.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but uh your world.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Your world.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Well um yeah, I think Michigan wins.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: I like Illinois.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: I think they're kind of phony though.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Besides, like Michigan's Grand.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: It's a weird uh weird conference.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Jeremy, you you you make me smile.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: I will agree that Michigan's obviously the favorite and probably going to win.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: I would pick Illinois if I had to pick a second team for this.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: I think Sparty could get the job done, but I I'm looking at them more towards a NCAA tournament run than I am seeing them make a Big Ten tournament run.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: It'll obviously it'll matter how much uh Michigan prioritizes the Big Ten tournament.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: We'll see what the case is there.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: They have suffered a depth injury, they lost LJ Kasen for the rest of the year.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: That could hurt them as the season wears on.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: We'll see as they're basically a Final Four or bus team.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: In terms of the bubble in the Big Ten, I think there's two teams we're looking at.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: And I'll ask Shane, do you think Ohio State is on the right side of the bubble or the wrong side?
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: And do you think Indiana is on the right side of the bubble or the wrong side?
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think Ohio State is currently on the right side of the bubble, and I think Indiana is on the wrong side of the bubble.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: Uh Ohio State has won their last three games, uh, one of them over Purdue, I believe.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then the very last game in the regular season, uh, they defeated Indiana.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, so that game was obviously huge for the bubble.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, so I think Ohio State is in as of right now, Indiana out.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: And they're a football school anyway, so I don't think that guarantees.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Let's hope it stays that way.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: I also think uh I agree with Shado on Ohio State.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: It also helps with it seems like this year the bubble is pretty weak as a whole with the teams around them in that that field.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: So in Ohio in Ohio State's case, they're I think they're pretty smooth sailing.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: It also feels like Michigan State is like definitely little brother to Michigan this year.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: So even though Michigan State's really good, I don't know.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: It's hard to be a team three times, no doubt, but like it just seems like Michigan has their number.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: And like like you said, Sean, I think that for Michigan State, it's full run when you get to the tournament.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Maybe the big uh the Big Ten, you compete hard, but I I don't know if they get the win against Michigan just because of it, just the dynamics feel off with them.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: And just just for the record, uh Nebraska is the two seed in the Big Ten tournament.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: I know we're not a facts podcast, but when it comes to uh correcting Jeremy, that's when we do turn into a facts podcast.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: Who is three?
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Michigan State.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: I hate to pile three is Michigan State, yeah.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: I hate to pile on Jeremy here, but if you listen to Tom Mizzo's post-game press conference, his direct quote was, I'm nobody's little brother, and our and my players aren't either.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: So maybe on the court you can point to the 2-0 Michigan record and say, hey, Tom, you are the little bro this year.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: But Tom wanted to make it adamantly clear that he is no one's little brother.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: Also, quick, have to shout out Bruce Thornton.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: I think he's everything that's right about college basketball in a lot of ways.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: Stayed at Ohio State for four years, became their all-time winning scorer, and now is going to likely lead them to the NCAA tournament.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: And he's a hell of a player, too.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad that Bruce should get his shot in March Madness this year.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: The only Bruce that I endorse in college basketball is Bruce Thornton.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: That's a good teaser, Shane.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: We like that.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about the Big 12.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: I uh I'm just excited for this tournament.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: I feel like the Big Twelve tournament's always kind of a good time.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I always don't see as much of it as I would like to for some reason.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: This one kind of gets lost when I'm trying to watch Kentucky and the SEC, and I always watch the Big East and make a priority to watch that final in the garden.
- 36:29SPEAKER_03: But the Big 12, I think to sum up the tournament in terms of how strong it should be, Iowa State is the number six team in the country, and they are the number five seed in the Big 12 tournament.
- 36:38SPEAKER_03: So that just shows the depth at the top.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: Truly, I think any of those top five or six teams could win.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: What are you guys expecting in this one?
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think, like you said, this is a tournament that is very, very strong at the top.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: So makes you think that the semifinal matchups are just gonna be terrific.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, and the championship as well.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Um the they have this like this new floor that they're that they're trying out at the tournament that um oh it's LED, right?
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: It's not a wooden basketball floor, it's yeah, an LED LED floor.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: So uh that's gonna be yeah, interesting to see.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, that's for people like Jeremy to really worry about the floor.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: The rest of us are gonna be watching the games themselves.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I think this one's gonna be it's gonna be a great tournament.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Probably the one that I'm looking forward to the most from a kind of competitive standpoint.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: Don't act like you don't care about wood.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: My god.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Uh shout out shout out Travis Kelsey.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to expect.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Sean's question is what to expect who who comes out.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good thing.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: I don't like Kansas, they could win it.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Um tech.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Jeez, wasn't it just one episode ago where you said Kansas is dead?
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: I've said I don't like them, but look, I'm excited about this.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Even Cincinnati, kind of sneaky.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Wes Miller.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know, Wes Miller, we'll see.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: I'm glad you brought them up, Jared, because Cincinnati is a team.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: Wes Miller was placed on that hot seat.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: He had that moment that went viral, which was actually pretty cool to see.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: He was basically apologizing to the fans saying, Hey, it's on me.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: I gotta be better.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: And since that moment, they've been a lot better.
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: They've been blowing some teams out in the bottom half of the league.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: They've won a couple of big games at the top.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: I think they're also dangerous in this Big 12 tournament because they're talented enough to make a run to the semifinals and potentially get a bid into the tournament with that weak bubble.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: And I guess that that begs the question too: how much does the committee factor in the conference tournament into their selection Sunday decisions?
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Because we've seen in the past there's been teams who make really good runs in deep conference tournaments and they don't get rewarded with a bid into the tournament unless obviously they win the tournament and get an automatic uh qualifying bid.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 39:01SPEAKER_03: And Shane, I'm glad you brought this up because I think this is a conversation we're going to hear a lot of throughout the course of this week leading up to Selection Sunday.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: And I am always in the camp that you kind of just brought up, where it feels like the committee does not weigh the conference tournaments as much as they should.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: Their response is always it's the collective body of work, it's your entire body of work from game one to game 34.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: So I think if I had to give you the honest answer of what actually happens is we as fans, because it's March, because all attention is now on college basketball, these games are heightened in our experiences.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: We're watching more of them, we're remembering more of the results.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: We think they're more important because they're conference tournament games.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: So we naturally just think, oh wow, this team won three straight games, they were on the bubble, they should be in the tournament now.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: When in reality, I bet the committee is actually valuing their entire body of work.
- 39:55SPEAKER_03: Now, you could make the argument to make these conference tournaments a little more meaningful, maybe there should be a slight priority given to a team making a run at this point of the season, because that's more indicative of how the team's playing, how the product will be the next weekend in the NCAA tournament.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: I think that's kind of where I net out on that, though, is we expect it to be something that maybe in reality it's not.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's an interesting kind of dilemma there because let's just take NC State from a couple years ago as an example.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: NC State was they were gonna be out if they didn't win the ACC tournament.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: They weren't even a bubble team two years ago with um uh what was it, DJ Burns and that fun crew.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: Um they made a run, yeah, yeah.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: They made a run through the ACC tournament, uh, won the tournament, obviously got the AQ into March Madness, and made a run all the way to the Final Four.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: If they had lost in the ACC championship game, for example, they would not have made then say tournament.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: Um so it's interesting.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can uh these teams who make deep runs in the uh in their conference tournaments, chances are they're probably gonna win a game or two, or even make you know, even a deeper run in the NCAA tournament.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: So it's it's an interesting kind of uh thing to judge there.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and also another talking point that we always see on CBS during the selection show is those championship games that are played on selection Sunday earlier in the day.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: Oftentimes there's a seeding debate that goes along with them for teams that are already in, and we see a team win a championship, and then the selection show happens, and that team's maybe seated a line below, and we always end up asking the committee chair, hey, why they just won the Big Ten?
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: How are they not a one seed?
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: So things like that kind of impact the discussion around how much they take into account these conference tournament games.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: I do think it's all body of work, but I think the point you made is one that you should remember is teams that are hot, it's only a couple of day turnaround before you tip off the NCAA tournament.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: So if you're in a rhythm shooting well, guys are feeling good, it's likely that that's gonna continue the very next week.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: I don't disagree with that, but how long do how long does the can does a committee have to bank on how long that'll last for where they're shooting into the tournament?
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: Like, NC State's a great story.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: I think it's rare that that happens.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: But I get what Shane's saying, like, yeah, if they lost in that uh in the ACC championship game, they're not in, and they don't have that final total.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: But like, there's you know, it's they're lots of things.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's more of that's more of just a reflection on how a team can catch lightning in a bottle because they weren't even close to the bubble that year.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: I think they had a losing record in conference.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: They were pretty they were pretty poor, and then just they won five games in five days to get in to and I think one of them was a buzzer beater against Virginia.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: So that team was certainly a special case, but I think it will be interesting to monitor just how much this week impacts seeding and bubble decisions for the committee.
- 42:51SPEAKER_03: Let's get to the SEC, where I do think there's actually a lot of bubble teams, and I also think there's a very, very dominant team, which unfortunately I've had the pleasure of watching twice in the last month, as Kentucky has lost twice to Florida.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: One of the only teams to play them within single digits, so I guess we could take some solace in that.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: But Florida has very much found themselves the defending champions, and honestly, at this point, gun to my head, they're looking pretty likely to make a deep run again.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Florida, I think it's no doubt they have the best front court in the country.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: But with Thomas Houk, they have uh Condon, Chinyalu, uh a deep uh deep bench too.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Larry and their guards are definitely playing better now than they did at the beginning of the season.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: This is a team that's no doubt trending up to that one seed line, and a team that I would want no part of playing in March.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, their front court's just nasty.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: They just overwhelm you.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: And it and when you could get such easy buckets and dominate the paint every single game, it makes it take the pressure off of those guards with Boogie Flan and Xavier Lee, and they've settled in the rhythms now where they're playing well as well, and it's a complimentary team.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: Jeremy, and Anybody beating Florida?
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: Or is this the Gators to lose?
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: Arkansas's playing good basketball.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: Alabama can score at a high rate.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: I still think Florida takes the SEC tournament pretty pretty easily.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: I don't think the SEC is as good as they were last year.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: Still, still good, very good conference, good talent.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: I Florida found themselves.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: It started off a little slow.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: They certainly found themselves.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: I don't think Alabama's gonna defend uh Florida late.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: That would be a best case scenario, too.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Arkansas's good, but I don't see.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: I feel I think Florida takes it pretty pretty easily.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: Shane, what about bubble teams in the SEC?
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like you said, I think this is the the conference with the most bubble teams uh competing in their conference tournaments out of all the conferences.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Uh some I'd like to mention real quick.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: I think these three teams are on the right side of the bubble.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Texas AM, Texas, and Mizzou.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: I think these teams, like I said, are on the right side of the bubble, but you you never really know.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: It's always good to kind of win a couple games in your conference tournament and leave no doubt.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: Then we go over to the other side of the bubble.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: And then some more, and that's where I land on the Auburn Tigers.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Uh they're 16 and 15, and you have people campaigning for them.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: People, one person campaigning for them to make the tournament over some deserving teams, and that is none other than their former head coach, Bruce Pearl.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: And boy oh boy, do I have some things to say about Bruce, uh, but I'll let you guys weigh in first.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: I I'm gonna go ahead and co-sign most of what's coming regarding Bruce Pearl, because I have a feeling where that's heading, and I'm not I've never been a Bruce Pearl fan.
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: I've always hated him.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: So to see him making a stooge of himself on the national stage now, now that he has a microphone in front of his face, I love that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say this I'll caveat the Bruce Slander with I did hear him call a play by he was doing color with, I believe it was Harlan and Raftery.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: It was a CBS crew earlier this year, and they did a Kentucky game, and I thought he was excellent in terms of in-game analysis, just watching the basketball, and I mean he's so recently been an elite level coach that I thought he was very good at that.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: Now his voice is a bit obnoxious, and there's some flaws there, but in terms of just picking up what was happening in the game, he was very good.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: That's about where my compliments run out for Bruce.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: Everything else, you could take it away.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: You could take it away, waiter.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: I've hated Bruce Pearl at Tennessee.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: I've really hated him at Auburn.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: I hated how Steven Pearl took over.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: I hate Bruce Pearl.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Uh and the sad thing is too, to shame the point.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: It seems like again, maybe I'm wrong.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: It seems like Auburn's a team that somehow is in, which sucks.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: I don't think they should be, but it seems like they are.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, they suck.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Bad team, bad coaching job by Steven this year.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: It's a shame too, because if Bruce stayed on for another year, this team's way in the tournament, in my opinion.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, Aubert shouldn't be in.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: I still think they're gonna get in.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: Dumb.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, but they have to figure, I mean, they uh uh under Bruce Pearl, they've had a pretty good basketball program, probably the best program in their school's history in that run uh with Bruce, and it could go away with how uh Steven's been running it and just what they lost from uh his dad.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we seem successful.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: I think we can all agree.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: Give give the business over to their their son or daughter and have them ruin it in in a week's time.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: And I think that might be what we're seeing with Steve.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we're gonna put our stamp on being anti-nepotism on this pod.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: We are we are not a nepo pod, uh, and that's exactly what's going on at Auburn.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: It seems like Bruce uh left right before the season when he did, so that Auburn had no chance but to elevate Steven Pearl to head coach.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: Um I think Bruce left him with a very talented roster.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and this isn't even a huge knock on Steven Pearl, because it's tough for any coach who's a first-year head coach to walk in, uh any first-time head coach to walk in and do a good job.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: But uh I don't think that Auburn's a tournament team.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: Again, they're 16 and 15.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then to make matters even worse, you have Bruce going on air, going on Twitter, saying all these things about Miami, Ohio.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: Uh hey, hey, Bruce, if you cared that much about Auburn, you would have just stayed and coached him this year instead of being a wannabe politician or whatever you're doing out there.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Let's also uh let's also not um elevate Steven too much.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: He's been with the program for several years now, so it's not like it's new new to him.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: He's been primed to be the head coach of the dad three years.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: And also, and also Jeremy, I will say, going against Steven as well, he has a very punchable face.
- 49:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Bruce is a Bruce is a sleaze ball, and Steven has that slicked hair, and he looks so punchable that he's easy to hate.
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, his dad handing him the job like Jane said right before the season starts.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: Oh no, what'll he ever do?
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: It's just all gross.
- 49:31SPEAKER_03: It's it's a terrible institution, is what it is.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Listen, you you you're you're speaking by language.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: It stinks too for Auburn because if they knew Bruce was a bit of a guy either.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: Well, Nate O'Des.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: Nate O'De.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: Let's let's relax on that part.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: Follow notes, and Nate we trust hashtag.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Um, if Auburn's a program that if they knew that Bruce was leaving, they'll put money towards a real head coach.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: They would have done a real search and they would have probably gotten a good candidate uh to replace Bruce.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: So it's not like they would have done a thorough, I think they would have done a thorough job, and it's like, here's Steven.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: Brutal for uh for the school and for the program.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Hey Steven.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: Well, I think that's probably a good place to leave it with Auburn.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, Steven Pearl's not the only punchable coach in the SEC.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: I have to air a grievance, and that is the alleged sexual deviant, Todd Golden.
- 50:31SPEAKER_03: I can't stand this guy.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: And yes, of course, I'm jealous that he's so good.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: He's an elite coach.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: Let me just preface it, he's elite.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: Everything he does tactically, I'm in on.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Really smart coach, gets it, plays modern basketball.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: All in on that.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: His behavior on the sidelines, it's so unbecoming.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: And and maybe it's sour grapes from a guy who's lost to him a bunch since he's taken over at Florida.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: But this guy, he is so unlikable.
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: He has this miserable face on.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: He yells at the refs like rudely all the time.
- 51:07SPEAKER_03: And I know a lot of coaches get into the refs.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: This guy does it with a smug arrogance as like a little punk.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: He also he cursed out one of his players for taking a shot at the end of the game.
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: He cursed out Xavier and Lee.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: They were up seven with like 30 seconds left.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: He says, What the fuck are you doing, X?
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: Hey, hey, Todd.
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: Todd, Todd, Todd, settle down, dude.
- 51:26SPEAKER_03: I'm out on Todd Golden, and I would love if one of you guys co-signed that with me.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: The painting was a gift, Todd.
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: I'll be taking it with me.
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, exceeding Lee to Princeton degree, smart guy.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: Don't know if you should be chirping him.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: I will say to Sean, though, uh two the both coaches that you hate in the SEC have one common denominator.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: I don't want to say cancelled for you, but just throwing it out there.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yes, I'm not a Todd Golden fan.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: Uh but he does.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: Can you elaborate?
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: Can you elaborate on that?
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: No, no, no need.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: Alleged.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: I I really I really do hate Steven.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: Just keep going back to Steve.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: Uh uh Shane, are you not gonna you're gonna sit here and not co-sign the Todd Golden slander, or you're you're a Todd Golden guy?
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: Can I put you in that cam?
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: Uh as a coach, I'm a Todd Golden guy.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: Again, I do not uh You're talking about the guy, we're talking about his character.
- 52:25SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: I do not stamp my approval on alleged sexual misconduct.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: That's I I wish you went a little further in your hate.
- 52:33SPEAKER_03: Can I get you to sign uh we don't like NATO's either petition?
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: Also a bad guy.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:39SPEAKER_03: Can I interest you in some literature?
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, thank you.
- 52:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 52:42SPEAKER_03: All right, that's where we stand on the SEC.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: Lots of bad, sleazy coaches, and then the GOAT, Mark Pope, the best guy going.
- 52:50SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, we win a couple games next couple weeks.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: I'll say that.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Um let's transition now.
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: Next up, we will do the Tortured Fans of the Week.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: We are going to keep it college basketball related.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: We have all picked teams that ultimately came up just a bit short of reaching the NCAA tournament.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: Some teams that have lost in their conference tournament finales.
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: Jeremy, why don't we start with you?
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no surprise.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: We'll go with Navy.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: I texted Sean a few days ago and said, How is Lehigh the two seed in the how bad is the Patriot League where an 11-7 Lehigh is the second seed?
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, it's bad.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: Navy was 17-1.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: They lose to Boston U.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: Take they're out of the tournament, of course, now on a buzzer beater when Navy themselves thought they had the game winner with like three seconds left.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, just terrible.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: Not to be foreshadowing.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we're, you know, now they're not in the tournament.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know if they're gonna have to go overseas for some foreign affairs stuff.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: I won't get into that, but um, yeah, just not great for Navy uh in a number of ways.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: And uh it stinks to they literally had the game winner layup, and then they give up a prayer of a three from 35-40 feet out, so Navy Tortured Fans of the Week.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: My god.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: In more ways than one.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Well done, Jeremy.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Shane, over to you.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 54:19SPEAKER_00: Uh mine is going to be UNC Wilmington.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: Again, you gotta feel for the teams who win their league in the regular season in these mid-major conferences and then get balanced in their conference tournaments.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, and that's the case with not only Navy, but UNCW as well.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, to make matters even worse, their coach, Coach Takayo Siddle, Siddle, maybe, uh, one or the other, is probably gonna get poached by either a power conference team or at the very least, a team like the Big East A10 realm.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, so not only did they win their league but lost in their conference tournament, their coach who got them there is gonna get poached.
- 54:58SPEAKER_00: Now, do I feel too badly for them?
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: Probably not.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: They won uh their conference tournament last year, uh, so I don't feel too bad, but still tortured in 2026.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: UNCW.
- 55:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the bottom line is when you lose the game before getting into the NCAA tournament, you're you're a tortured fan base that week for sure.
- 55:18SPEAKER_03: And mine is on that theme as well, Central Arkansas.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: To make matters worse for them, they lost in overtime.
- 55:24SPEAKER_03: They didn't even lose in regulation.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: In regulation, they had not been beaten to go to the NCAA tournament before ultimately losing to Queens in OT.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: Just heartbreaking stuff.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: I couldn't imagine being a part of that team in a senior, maybe have never made an NCA tournament before, or your dreams to play in one, getting to overtime and then coming up short is devastating.
- 55:47SPEAKER_03: I can't imagine there's many Central Arkansas fans out there, and certainly not many listening.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: But T's and P's to you guys.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and speaking of tortured fans and tortured teams, I think the three worst games to lose in all sports, number one, we'll say number one for last.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: We'll start with number three.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: I think number three is a, like you say, Central Arkansas, a conference championship game where you won your regular season and then lose in the conference title in just a back and forth close game.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: Number two, I think losing an elite eight game is brutal.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: You Yeah, I mean Final Force, you hang banners for Final Fours.
- 56:30SPEAKER_00: Losing in the Elite Eight, our guy John Cheney, maybe rest in peace, lost in five Elite Eights.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: If he just won one of those, got to the Final Four, I think he'd be way more nationally renowned.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: And taking the top spot, the worst loss in all of sports.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Losing in the regional final of the Little League World Series tournament.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: Oh Christ.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: The worst loss in all sports.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: I I'm not kidding.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: I've put a lot of thought into this.
- 56:56SPEAKER_00: Losing in the regional final the game, uh, you know, if you win that game, you're in the Little League World Series is the worst loss in all of sports.
- 57:05SPEAKER_03: Yes, for what I've experienced.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: For 11 and 12 year old boys and girls, I I do agree that loss stinks.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: I will say too, two things.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: One, Temple does hang banners for Elite 8.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Read about it, see about it.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: And I know you said this too, Shane, kind of, but like just being the one seed two and not getting the job done when your conference is only going to send one team, and you finit, like you said, you finish the regular season first.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: That really needs to be emphasized more.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: That's it's brutal.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's some interesting discussion to be had whether what the future of college basketball postseason conference tournaments looks like.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: I think there is some discussion about potentially moving them up in the schedule and playing them at the beginning of the year as sort of like a season kickoff, welcome to college basketball type moment.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: I think that's interesting.
- 57:54SPEAKER_03: And then each conference has the ability to award that postseason bid to whoever they want to.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: They could give it to the regular season champ if they wanted to.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: Most conferences for TV money obviously elect to give it to the postseason champ because that gives teams incentive to go.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: I think the issue is if you take that away from the postseason now and keep it at the end of the year, you'll see a ton of guys opting out, and it'll become like bowl season in college football where you can't do that.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: So I think the way if you're going to reward the regular season winner, the most deserving team, the way to do that would be to move those conference tournaments forward and sort of use them as a launching off point for your conference season.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: I think that's interesting and something to consider.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: Let's flip it, Jeremy.
- 58:35SPEAKER_03: You the best thing you saw this week, I believe, is the opposite end of the spectrum.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, vice versa.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: Uh Campbell, boss, and you outcomes, of course.
- 58:44SPEAKER_01: This is March.
- 58:45SPEAKER_01: You know, you love you love to see that kind of stuff.
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: Campbell, especially, that's a pretty big upset against uh uh UNC Wilmington.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: And I forget what could they're new to the conference, I believe.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: I forget where they were.
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: Where were they in the Ace Sun before?
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: Don't quote me on that.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: But good turnaround, great upset.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I'm sorry.
- 59:04SPEAKER_01: But uh uh it's the Campbell fighting Camels.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I don't think regardless, those are the games we those are the finishes we root for.
- 59:16SPEAKER_03: That is right.
- 59:17SPEAKER_03: That's the so the best thing you saw was those two teams pulling off those upsets over the one seeds in their league.
- 59:23SPEAKER_03: Shane, before we toss it to you, the best thing you saw, I will keep us on college basketball for just one more topic today.
- 59:29SPEAKER_03: Mark Schmidt announced he was leaving St.
- 59:32SPEAKER_03: Bonaventure or he was let I don't know how exactly the framing of this was.
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: Basically, his time at Bonnie's is done.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: Wog is the GM there, in case you guys forgot.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: Uh he's calling the shots now.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: And Mark Schmidt has had a great career at St.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: Bonaventures, took them to extreme heights, has been excellent there as a mid-major basketball coach.
- 59:55SPEAKER_03: Had the opportunity to leave several times too for Robson, stuck around because he loved Bonnies.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: And in his press conference, I thought he did a really cool thing.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: He was basically just like, hey, I'm done coaching.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: Like, I need to my wife has sacrificed for me for these last 20, however many years, to be a coach's wife.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: And he's like, I just want to travel the world and be with my family.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: He's like, I'm not cultured at all.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: I know college basketball in a small town in New York, and I there's so much of the world to see.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: And it was refreshing to hear a guy with some perspective at that age in his life where a lot of these coaches, I feel like they they go down this rabbit hole, and this is the only world they know.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_03: We're big perspective and culture guys on this podcast, so refreshing to see that from a coach that I've always been a fan of.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: Woe, damn you forever for taking Mark Schmidt from us.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: Um more with West, that's what Mark Schmidt did.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, how about you?
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: What was the best thing you saw?
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: Uh, best thing I saw, I was gonna do the worst thing I saw, but I again Sean Stalin, uh, he rules with an iron fist.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: He did not allow me to do that.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: So therefore, I am doing the best thing I saw this week.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_00: News flash.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_00: There wasn't too much good going on this week, but one thing that I did see uh was the TV series draft uh from none other than the Tortured Fans Department.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_00: So I'd just like to take a second here, break that down a little bit.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: I would award the best draft to Joe Zweibel.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: Um now this was a close race.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: I thought that Sean Boyle put up a heck of a fight.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: Uh for someone who hadn't seen many TV shows.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: I thought that the ones that he picked were terrific.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: Uh so let's let's start with Sean here.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: We'll give him his props.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: Uh thank you.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: Game of Thrones, my favorite show.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: Of course, the ending uh season seven was not up to the standard of the rest of the show, but uh gosh, the rest of Game of Thrones, just perfect.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: 10 out of 10.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: Uh also Friday Night Lights, one of my favorite shows.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_00: Texas Forever 7.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_03: Uh similar to the exact same thing.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_00: Coach uh oh my god, what's the uh coach Taylor?
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, this is bad.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_00: Coach Taylor, oh cut that.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: Cut that.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: Coach Taylor, can't believe I forgot his name.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_00: Coach Taylor, forgive me.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: Uh he did something similar to Mark Schmidt.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_00: He said, I'm hanging up the coaching cleats here.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: Uh Tammy Taylor, Mark Schmidt's wife.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: You guys leave the we're doing what you want to do now.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: My coaching days are over.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: So shout out to uh Coach Taylor, shout out to Coach Schmidt, shout out to Sean for a good movie draft.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: Um, but Joe, he's got some absolute bangers of shows on here.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_00: The Wire, Band of Brothers, uh Severance, West Wing, The Pit.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: I had not seen The Pit yet, but I uh have heard very good things.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: Uh I think those are your top two.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: I give Joe the slight edge for number one, Sean number two, and then I'm gonna go Jeff and then Jake last.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Jeff, Jake, no offense.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: I just didn't think you brought your eight games to this draft.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_00: Uh especially Jake, sorry.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: Jake, Jake threw me for a loop with the law and order pick.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: That was laugh out loud, funny.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_03: And it wasn't a terrible pick.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: It was just in the moment, I did not see that coming.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_03: Him taking a procedural.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_03: That's just he took it for volume.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: It's just a volume score.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: Uh Shane, first of all, I appreciate you tuning in to the episode.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: That that means a lot.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_03: Secondly, appreciate you plugging it.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_03: Very good job there.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: Obviously, disagree with who you think won, but I'm happy that I was at least in consideration.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_03: Jeremy, if you had to pick one, who would you go with?
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_01: Um, it's tough.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: But give me the kid.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: Give me Sean.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: That's my thing.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_03: And that's why the cousins are up to some.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_03: They're invited back together.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: I will say, Joe, very good draft.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: Um, especially West We in the fourth, great value.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_01: But Sean's coming back in the fourth with lost Black Mirror.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, and and Shane, you you undersold the Black Mirror pick.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_03: We watched that together in college, and let me tell you this.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_03: I mentioned needing a blanket nearby.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_03: You needed a blanket too.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_00: Well, Sean, forgive me.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: It was kind of hard for me to focus on Black Mirror when I had my cousin kind of touching me the whole time.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: You know, he would yikes.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, what am I supposed to do?
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_00: Jeremy, you know it's true, too.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_00: It happens.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: What can I say?
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: So how can I focus on TV show when I had this guy diddling me the whole time?
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: Well no, Diddy.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: We enjoyed Black Mirror together, and the two of us especially enjoyed it uh with the extra curriculums.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but uh yeah, give me Sean.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Just uh better, better group of uh shows.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_01: And uh but Joe, like I give credit to Joe, like also a very good team, but I think uh Shaw just has more uh star power.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, listen, Joe and Jeff especially are huge TV guys, they're connoisseurs, they they know what they're talking about, they have refined palettes, they're deep in the weeds, and I'm the people's champ.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_03: That's I relate to the people.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_03: I've seen shows that people watch, not not Banshee and the leftovers that only Cinephiles watch.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_03: So I I just want to I thank you, Jeremy.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_03: I'm the people's champion.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_03: We'll take that one vote.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_03: Shane, your ballot doesn't count.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_03: Uh, before we wrap up, I just wanted to do some recommendations, and Shane actually has another segment where he's going to be ranking some things in another attempt to soil his cousin's reputation.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_03: Shane, I'll throw it to you.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so in this segment, uh let's rewind to last week, maybe it was two weeks ago.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_00: Uh Jeremy made the just absurd claim that the Jack Hughes photo uh after the gold medal hockey match in the Olympics was a top five iconic sports photo of all time.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: Facts.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: Uh I called ludicrous.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: Uh and Just erroneous in the moment, uh, and my feelings have not changed.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: So, for those of you who don't know, there was a photo of Jack Hughes.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_00: Uh, a lot of you probably haven't even seen it because it's just that unremarkable.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_01: You hate America if if that's the case.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: I'll just say.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_01: Top five.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_01: Top five.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: Anyway, I will be giving way more than five photos that are more iconic.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have photos that are more iconic.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be fair and say yes or no after every picture.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: Photo.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: Alright, here we go.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_00: Probably the most iconic sports photo of all time.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_00: The Mohammed Ali picture standing over Sonny Liston after the Phantom Punch.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_00: The Michael Jordan dunk contest photo when he takes off from the foul line and he's just hovering in mid-air, arms stretched out.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: What cares?
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_01: Who cares?
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_01: There's more the the Jordan photo.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_01: We're talking iconic.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_01: With the Jordan photo where he has his arms out like this with a basketball in each hand, it's more iconic than that.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_01: And that's not even a sports photo.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_01: That's just uh uh a thing.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, no to that, no to that one.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_01: That's that's wild, Jeremy.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_00: We're talking about iconic.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_00: That's my god that's wild.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_01: Jordan talking at a dunk contest in the ACM.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_03: We can comment, maybe.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_00: Good lord.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_00: Uh the John Carlos and Tommy Smith Olympic protest uh photo when they're standing on the podium receiving their medals and they have their fists up in uh protesting.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_00: Uh iconic.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_00: The Wilt 100 points photo holding up the piece of paper 100 points.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's iconic.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_00: Everyone knows that photo.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_00: That is completely iconic.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_00: Um all right, now I'm just gonna run through a bunch.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_00: Uh the photo of Usain Bolt uh at the Olympics one of those years, uh, just running away from the 100-meter competition, and he's got this just smiling on his face.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_00: Everyone else is blur in the background.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: It's a great photo.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_03: I didn't know for clarification purposes.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_03: Did you state in American history or in world history?
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_03: Was this not what did you say?
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_03: He said sports.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_01: I meant Americans, but I said, I said, I said.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, you must have okay.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_00: How are we supposed to know you meant American?
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, read my mind.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_00: If he just did my mind, do it.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_01: Do it once or twice, read my mind.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_01: Also, uh none of the bulk.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_00: If he just did sports, then I think that you saved photos good.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, he did say sports.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_00: Check the tape.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_00: Uh then it's cool.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_01: It's not that iconic.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_00: It's not that iconic.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: Uh Brandy, Brandy Chastain, after she won the World Cup for the US, is that American?
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_00: She takes off her jersey.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: She has her sports brawl, the celebration as she's uh sliding there after the winning the gold medal in the World Cup.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: Who's who'd they beat in that World Cup?
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_00: China.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: Are you sure about that?
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_00: Positive.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: Well, it's still not that iconic.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_00: Alan Iverson stepping over Taiwan.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_00: Iconic.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: That's more of a video than a photo.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_00: Um fair point.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_00: The photo of D.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: Wade to Braun.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_00: D.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_00: Wade's got his hands up, the owl you, Braun's about to dunk it.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_00: Iconic.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: Very cool.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: I don't think that's that.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_00: I okay, good.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_00: In my opinion, I mean, I guess we'll be a little objective here.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: I am not a Giants fan by any means, but the David Tyree helmet catch video where he's got the football pinned against the bigger.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_00: Again, more of a video.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_00: Well, everything has video, Jer.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_01: No, it's about the photos here.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_01: 2026.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: We're talking about the photos here, Shade.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: I will say you've missed one.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_00: I'm still going.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, go ahead.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I'd love to hear what you have to say too.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_00: Uh the Chiefs quarterback, I think it's Len Dawson, halftime of like the first Super Bowl, and he's in the locker room just smoking a cigarette.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_00: Iconic.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_00: It is iconic.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna rule that one out.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_03: I've never seen that.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_03: I've never even heard of that.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, come on.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: Not culture.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and then the very last one, bringing it back to Michael Jordan.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, the photo where uh against the Jazes rising up for that game winner in I believe game six.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_00: Yep, and you see the whole crowd in the background Jordan elevating above everyone else and uh for that that game winning shot for the finals in '97, maybe?
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_00: I forget what year.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_01: Fair, sure, for that one.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: Was that the one you were gonna say?
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_01: Phew.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_01: The dagger, Devontae Smith, Super Bowl 59.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, Chris.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_01: Radledge, oh wait, dropping to his knees with Chooch.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: Uh okay.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_03: But but I'm not sure.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_03: Before this devolves any further between you two, you guys have completely steamrolled the show here.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_03: I I just want to wrap this up.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_03: I asked Shane to use some brevity.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_03: He did not.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_03: He he flew past, he did several honorable mentions.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_03: It's not a top five iconic photo.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_03: I think that's pretty I think that's pretty much that was my problem.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_00: That's all I needed to hear.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_00: Wrong.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_03: If I'm the jury, I think the point's proven, but I will say for Jeremy's sake, it has a chance to grow into one of those iconic photos.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_03: It's very recent.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_03: It's hard to overtake something that's existed for 30, 40 years in the course of a week.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_03: I think over time the Jack Hughes photo could be looked at even more iconically as time passes by.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: And you know what that's sure?
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_01: That's called a Merlot.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_01: Ages with time, ages well.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: So there we are.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: 20 years, let's revisit this.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: Also, I'd say the original photo from the Miracle on Ice in 1980 of the team celebrating, that was on like the cover of Sports Illustrated.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_01: Right now, even though I don't even know I don't even know what that is.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_00: So no.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're supposed to be a journalist.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_01: Well, okay.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_03: Jeremy, do you have any recommendations?
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_01: I do have a recommendation.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_01: We are getting into warmer weather.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_01: So obviously, Arnold Palmer invitational was this weekend.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_01: We have the players next week.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_01: So, you know, spring sports to get into and golf, it's uh getting into full season, better weather with that.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_01: So that's you know, that'll be nice to look uh.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_03: Keep an eye, keep an eye on golf as we start to golf ourselves with the warm weather and some big events coming up on the PJ Tour.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_03: Not that far away from the Masters.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_03: We go right from Final Four to Augusta.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_03: My recommendation if you guys have not gone and listened to it already, Harry Styles put out a new record, and boy, is it a good one.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_03: I am all in, I love Harry, so I was gonna be all in basically regardless of what he put out.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_03: It could have been junk and I would have tried to sell you it, but I think it's really good.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_03: Kiss all the time, disco occasionally.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_03: A little bit of a weird title, obviously.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_03: Uh it's it's grammatically a bit incorrect too.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_03: There's some punctuation used, but then at the end it's not.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_03: Not sure what he's doing there.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_03: He also put out a Netflix concert uh live in Manchester, I believe it was.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_03: Have not watched that yet, but I'm going to do so as soon as we're finished recording.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Sean, you now you say that, uh, you put the title of that song in the group chat the other day.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_03: Kiss all the time, disco occasionally.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: I was when I say I was so confused, I had no clue what you were talking about, and I didn't bother to look it up.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_00: So now it makes sense.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_00: I thought I thought you were off the rocker for a second when you just that's all you said in the group chat.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_00: You said kiss all the time, disco occasionally.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_00: I was I was shook.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I thought real ones would know what I was referring to.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_03: I guess not.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_03: It was announced months ago with that title, so I thought as a One Direction guy like yourself, you'd be aware.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_01: He was Shay was too busy looking at Johnny United smoking a cigarette in the locker room.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_01: It wasn't Johnny United.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say my One Direction fancy side with Williams Scrub.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that was the guy right there.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_00: Sean, as my music sensei, I follow your lead.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_00: Oh Captain My Captain, uh you tell me what to listen to, I listen to it, so I will listen to this album.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_03: I do appreciate that.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Shane.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, can you do that?
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_03: Jeremy, anything as we wrap up?
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: Um have you heard of the inhaler?
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: The inhalers?
- 1:14:20unknown: No.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_02: Like the band?
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_01: No, they're like a musical band.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: Uh oh, a musical band.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: Well, obviously, not the actual like medical uh device.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, but uh they uh came on my Sam Fender feed and uh they're pretty good.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_03: So I didn't know if you had a I am not familiar with their work, but I will I will check them out, Jeremy.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_03: Appreciate that.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_03: Uh anything else, boys?
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_03: I think this is a good episode.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_03: I'm excited for conference tournament week.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_03: I hope I hope you guys watch a little more ball and culture yourselves ahead of the NCAA tournament because I I know I will announce now we are going to be running a tortured fans bracket pool where the winner might get a s a little prize.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_03: So you have you have a chance to put your knowledge to the test against all of your favorite hosts of the show.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_00: Can we end this uh podcast with a fins up on three?
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, in honor of the LIU Sharks.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_03: I do like that, yes.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_00: All right, I'll go three, two, one, uh, go.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_00: And on go, we fins up.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think we got it.

- 1:15:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_00: Three, two, one, go.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_00: Fins up.
