- 0:05She's a happy girl. Hello, friends, and welcome back to another podcast of Woman.
- 0:10At the Well Ministries, where we believe that all of us have to come to Jesus
- 0:15like the woman at the well in John chapter 4.
- 0:18Our highest priority is making God real in your life.
- 0:22Whether you are listening in our app, in your favorite podcasting app,
- 0:25or on our website at watwm.org, we invite you to sit down with us as we look
- 0:31to the scriptures to learn more about God and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03The world will tell you to get all you can and store it for a rainy day.
- 1:07Every day people push you to work harder and harder.
- 1:11The ways of the world will lead you to believe that you have to look out for
- 1:14yourself and no one else.
- 1:16With each spent effort, you begin to feel the pride of the world and start to
- 1:21lose sight of the blessings of God.
- 1:23Before you know it, you have overlooked God's hand in your life and have stolen
- 1:28His glory and placed it upon yourself as you claim to be in control of all that is in your life.
- 1:35As you take control of your life, you quickly lose sight of the importance of others.
- 1:39Please join us in this broadcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Kim discusses
- 1:44the demise of the rich man in Luke 12 as he puffs himself up and neglects the
- 1:50important things of life.
- 1:53Thank you for joining us. And we're going to talk today out of Luke chapter
- 1:5712, beginning in verse 15 and concluding in verse 21.
- 2:01And it's interesting to me that as we begin to read about this rich man, he has everything.
- 2:07He has everything this world can offer.
- 2:11And it's obvious to me that he's worked for it because he keeps figuring out how to get more.
- 2:17And you see, that's the way things are in our lives. The devil will begin to
- 2:23get our eyes turned away from God. And we begin to look at the things of the world.
- 2:28We begin to get so excited about the skills and the talents that he has given us.
- 2:33And suddenly we find ourselves thinking that all that we have is because of all that we've done.
- 2:40And then it becomes that all that we have isn't enough.
- 2:44So we begin to work harder and harder and more and more.
- 2:48And this is a trick of the devil, because as we work harder and harder for things
- 2:53to get materialistically, and as we work more and more, then we have less and
- 2:58less time to be used of God.
- 3:01And we get more and more things that cause us to be more and more attached to the world.
- 3:08You see, the proverb tells us that pride goeth before a fall.
- 3:14And never do we see it any more clearly than we see it in Luke chapter 12,
- 3:21beginning in verse 15. Shall we pray?
- 3:24Our kind and most gracious to heavenly Father, Lord, we just ask that you would
- 3:28just visit with us right now.
- 3:30Lord, we pray that you would remove from our heart anything that would keep
- 3:35us from hearing what you would have to say.
- 3:37And Lord, we pray that you would remove from around us any distractions that
- 3:40we might have that would keep us from focusing solely upon you and hearing exactly
- 3:46what you would have for us to hear.
- 3:48And Lord, we thank you that we know that you're taking this time with us and
- 3:51that you care about us and that you want to be with us.
- 3:55And Lord, we thank you that we know that we're important to you and that the
- 3:59things that are important to us matter to you and that we can count on you to
- 4:03provide our every need. and we don't have to depend upon ourself,
- 4:07which is frail and full of failures.
- 4:10Well, we can depend on the one true God who never fails and who will supply
- 4:15all of our needs according to your riches.
- 4:17Lord, we pray that you would just work in our hearts and in our lives and you
- 4:21would just change our focus if it need be.
- 4:23That we would be solely focused on you and that we would allow you to lead us
- 4:28in the way that you would have us to go.
- 4:30Lord, we pray for your divine intervention in our lives and
- 4:34we pray for your guidance of our footsteps and lord
- 4:37we pray that your will would be done in this lesson and
- 4:40all these things we ask in thine most precious and holy name we
- 4:43pray all of god's people said amen in
- 4:47the book of luke beginning in the 15th verse of the 12th chapter it reads as
- 4:52this and he said unto them take heed and beware of covetous for a man's life
- 4:59consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
- 5:05And then he spake a parable unto them. Verse 16 says, And he spake a parable
- 5:10unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully.
- 5:16And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do?
- 5:21Because I have no room where but to stow my fruits.
- 5:25And he said, This will I do. I will pull down my barns and build greater.
- 5:31And there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
- 5:37And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years.
- 5:43Take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
- 5:46But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.
- 5:54Then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?
- 6:00So is he that layeth up treasure for himself
- 6:03and is not rich toward God
- 6:06as we begin to look at this passage of scripture I want you to take a close
- 6:11look at what he says take heed other words listen up follow what I'm about to
- 6:19say this is important and you need to understand and do it Jesus says take heed.
- 6:27Beware of covetousness. The Ten Commandments says thou shalt not covet.
- 6:34If you think about in your life, the number of times you've gotten in trouble,
- 6:39because you got your mind wondering about what somebody else had and you had
- 6:42to have a little bit more.
- 6:44And the next thing you knew, you were spending way more than you had and you
- 6:47were in a whole lot of trouble.
- 6:50If you haven't found yourself in a financial mess because of covetousness,
- 6:54if this is a problem you have, you've definitely found yourself in a lot of distress,
- 7:00because you're constantly working to see
- 7:03who is better and i've got news
- 7:06for you you might be on top with that
- 7:09battle but somewhere someplace somebody has more and it's just a battle you
- 7:14can't win and it will turn you into a very bitter miserable individual and the
- 7:20lord says beware of it and then he goes to tell you why because basically it's
- 7:27a small part of who you are,
- 7:29but don't let it define you because it isn't important what you have.
- 7:35It's important who you are and whose you are.
- 7:40You see, when this rich man gets pared down and you cut away all the things
- 7:47of his life, he's an empty man.
- 7:50For you see, he told his soul that he was happy and he took charge of his soul.
- 7:58And it doesn't work that way. For you see, in Revelations, we are told that
- 8:05whosoever name was not found written in the Lamb's book of life was cast until hellfire.
- 8:13Revelations 20, 15. You'll spend eternity in the lake of fire if you've not
- 8:20made your calling an election sure you aren't in charge of your soul you have
- 8:28the opportunity to make this choice because he says choose you this day whom you will serve.
- 8:34But in John chapter 14 and verse 6, he says, Jesus speaking,
- 8:39I am the way, the truth, and the life.
- 8:43And no man cometh unto the Father but by me.
- 8:48He tells us that all things were created for and by him and that he knows the way.
- 8:55And then he tells us, I am the way.
- 8:58In John chapter 3, he says, Marvel not that I say unto you, ye must be born again.
- 9:03He also says in John chapter 3, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
- 9:08This rich man had everything, but he didn't understand the gift and the grace of God.
- 9:16For you see, he was unwilling to let God be God.
- 9:20He wanted control. For you see, he says in verse 19, and I will say to my soul, soul.
- 9:29He was dictating what his soul would do and he was placing his trust and his
- 9:35confidence even to the extent of his eternal soul in his own self.
- 9:43Most of that, I believe, started in this poor man because he was suffering from covetousness.
- 9:50You see, I believe he had gotten himself into such a shape that he believed
- 9:55that he could define himself by the things he had.
- 9:58I believed he had been deceived so badly by the world and by the devil that
- 10:03he thought if he could just continue to have a bunch of abundance,
- 10:07people would think he was all that and a bag of chips.
- 10:10And I believe he convinced himself that he was all that in a bag of chips.
- 10:14And it all started with just a little bit of problem.
- 10:18It started with that little itty-bitty sin. I'm telling you,
- 10:21if we give sin an inch, it will take a mile.
- 10:25I once was told when I was a little kid, if you give sin an inch, it'll become a ruler.
- 10:31And I think that's absolutely prophetic and definitely profound.
- 10:35Ground it will begin to rule your life because you give
- 10:38it power and in romans
- 10:41chapter 6 he says sin hath no more dominion over us if we
- 10:44are child of god but we're in the world but
- 10:47the world doesn't need to be in us for it was obliterated
- 10:50by the blood of jesus christ and for it to come into our
- 10:53lives we have to invite it open up the door and
- 10:56grab it let me tell you the devil's
- 10:59looking for every angle because he
- 11:02wants to be ruler and i believe this man
- 11:05started out just wanting a little bit more and so jesus begins this entire dissertation
- 11:12of this parable with beware hey this is a problem that can happen well let's
- 11:18just nip it in the bud and let you understand that who you are isn't dependent on what you have.
- 11:25You doubt me? Look at Job. Job was the same man, which was a guy that there
- 11:33was no gal found in his mouth.
- 11:36And the Lord was so confident in his faith that he allowed the devil to test him.
- 11:40But he was the same person when he was rich as he was when he was broke.
- 11:45Because you see, who Job was wasn't dependent on what Job had.
- 11:50You see, and joy is from within.
- 11:52And it's unspeakable and full of glory. and it isn't circumstantial.
- 11:57You see, I've seen great pain in my life, but nothing could snuff my joy.
- 12:03For you see, even the worst of things, God makes good.
- 12:07Even the homegoing of my mother, I was overjoyed at the funeral by knowing that
- 12:13she had gone to that home not made with hands eternal into the heavens.
- 12:17That the race that she had run had come to the end and she had come to the prize
- 12:22of the high mark and she was standing in the presence of Jesus Christ and she
- 12:26was fellowshipping with my father and they were complete and they were whole.
- 12:30And the sorrow that I felt wasn't about them. It was about me.
- 12:36Which is exactly what's going on with this guy. He's all about him.
- 12:40But Jesus took the worst parts of my life and he sat down beside of me and he
- 12:47cradled me and he hugged me and he held me.
- 12:50And he showed me who he was in ways I'd never seen him before.
- 12:54And those promises that I'd read about all my life, he brought back to my heart and mind.
- 13:01Oh, how I miss them. but for
- 13:04me it's just a temporary separation for
- 13:08i have the promise to see them you see this
- 13:11man got his eyes off of what was real and began to fabricate a whole new scenario
- 13:19and it all started because he took control away from god bible says that if
- 13:26we humble ourselves before the mighty hand of God that he will lift us up in due time.
- 13:31This dude wasn't willing to be lifted up anywhere, for he had placed himself
- 13:36in the position as Lord of his life.
- 13:38And many of you talking to me right now, looking at me, listening,
- 13:43hearing the sound of my voice, have done the same thing and you're not admitting it.
- 13:48You have placed yourself as ruler and God of your life because you're not asking
- 13:52God for any help. Look at what happens to him.
- 13:55He is blessed bountifully.
- 13:58And it never crosses the rich man's mind that he was blessed bountifully because
- 14:03God had people in need that he wanted this man to supply their needs.
- 14:09It never crossed his mind. He's trying to figure out what to do,
- 14:12but does he go to God and ask? No, he says he fought within himself.
- 14:17How about that decision you've got how about the blessings that he's bestowed you with.
- 14:23You see, those children he gave you, you're just keeping them for him.
- 14:29He's giving them to you to raise, but they're his creation.
- 14:35And he has commissioned you to raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
- 14:41And he has trusted you with their care.
- 14:45And you can't raise them alone, my friend. You must come to God in prayer and ask him.
- 14:51But some of you are just thinking within yourself, what do I do with this teenage
- 14:55kid who won't listen to me?
- 14:57Hey, that's nothing new under the sun.
- 15:00The Bible tells you how to deal with that.
- 15:03You train up a child in the way he should go. When he's old,
- 15:05he won't depart from it. You pray for them.
- 15:09Remember the prodigal son? He went away.
- 15:13And the whole time he was away, the father was preparing for him to come back.
- 15:18You say, I didn't know because he brought him a fatted calf.
- 15:21The calf was ready for him. He didn't give up.
- 15:25But you see, we need to go to the father in prayer and be prepared.
- 15:31We need to not think within ourselves. We don't need all the self-help books
- 15:35and all the parenting things.
- 15:36One of the best sellers of parenting in the country never had a kid.
- 15:42And you buy his books asking him, what do you need to do? why don't you ask
- 15:49God who created all things.
- 15:52Has a plan you see this rich man thought
- 15:55within himself and he looked around
- 15:58him he didn't look to god he was looking
- 16:01around and he was using logic the
- 16:05bible tells me in hebrews chapter
- 16:0911 and verse 6 but without faith is
- 16:12impossible to please him for he that cometh
- 16:15to god must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder
- 16:18of them that diligently seek him you have
- 16:21the promise that if you come to God in faith believing he will reward you yeah
- 16:25the promise that he said that he will guide the footsteps of a righteous man
- 16:28you can put your confidence in the fact that he is the way so if you follow
- 16:32him you can't go wrong you see it's not circumstances that dictate who we are,
- 16:39it's within us the problem this rich man had was he had placed his faith in
- 16:45things that would fail and he had placed his faith in himself and he continually
- 16:49goes to himself for what to do
- 16:51Look how many times he says, what shall I do?
- 16:55I have no room. This will I do.
- 17:00I will pull down my barns. I will bestow all my fruits and my goods.
- 17:06He says, and I will build greater. And there I will bestow my fruits and goods.
- 17:14He was hoarding up.
- 17:17Aren't you glad the Lord didn't just hoard up? The Bible tells us that we are our brother's keeper.
- 17:23You see, the Lord has given everybody all that they need.
- 17:26Sometimes it's deposited in somebody else's hand.
- 17:31And you have the privilege and the opportunity to be a blessing and an instrument and a tool of God.
- 17:37But you hold so tightly to it that you can't pry it out of your hands.
- 17:41You don't stop the will of God.
- 17:44But you sure do reap damnation on
- 17:46your soul and you sure do cause yourself
- 17:50trouble for you see god didn't give you
- 17:53six coats you've only got two
- 17:56arms and one body the best you can do is wear one
- 17:58on each arm and you definitely don't need it but
- 18:02somebody you know probably needs one you see
- 18:05the lord gave you what you had so you could do what
- 18:08he wants you to do with it and he wants you to have nice things and good things
- 18:12and he's providing that for you but do you really need those things you've had
- 18:16in your closet that you've never seen for two years it freaks you out and shame
- 18:21on you if you're pulling stuff out of your closet that still has tags on it
- 18:25they've been in it for a year.
- 18:27That's what this man kept doing building greater
- 18:30sometimes we buy to help
- 18:34make ourselves feel better sometimes we just keep getting and getting and getting
- 18:38and you see people getting a lot of problems because it really doesn't satisfy
- 18:41you have people who go shopping and that's the recreation i submit to you probably
- 18:48they thought within themselves and they didn't go to him and ask.
- 18:52More this man had the more he wanted he had plenty even more than he needed
- 18:58and then he had to get more and then he just kept getting more and he had stuff
- 19:04that would take him through many years,
- 19:07but something was about to happen he didn't count on he said tonight thy soul will be required,
- 19:13you're laying up for years he says take no thought for tomorrow for the evil
- 19:17of the day is sufficient thereof you don't have to depend on you for tomorrow and i'm not.
- 19:26Aim that you don't need to plan for your future. You need to not think within yourself.
- 19:31You don't need to take the advice necessarily of your brokers, if you have them.
- 19:36You need to go to Jesus Christ and you say, Lord, you've given me this amount of money this day.
- 19:42And I want you to tell me exactly where you want me to spend that money.
- 19:46And I want you to tell me exactly where it needs to go.
- 19:50And I want you to let me have the faith to believe that all is going to be okay.
- 19:54And Lord, if you tell me to put this in my 401k, then I'm going to do it.
- 19:59But Lord, if you tell me to buy food for that family down the street, then I'm going to do it.
- 20:04Because I'm not going to think within myself. And I'm not going to worry about
- 20:08building more and more and more and more and more and more and more for me.
- 20:12I'm going to think about building a bigger and bigger kingdom for thee.
- 20:15And I'm going to think about showing the love of God to all around me.
- 20:18And I'm going to think about the abundance that you've given me being something
- 20:22that I can be a blessing for someone else.
- 20:25And I can trust you that your seed will never be begging and that we'll never
- 20:29be looking for something.
- 20:30Because you said you'd supply all of my needs according to your riches and glory.
- 20:34And you said I could do all things in your strength.
- 20:36So Lord up in heaven, what you've given me today, tell me where to write the
- 20:41check. Tell me where to put the money. Tell me what to do.
- 20:45Well, you've got plenty more where that came from. and I just simply am your bank account.
- 20:51And Lord, let me know how to help others come to know you. Lord,
- 20:55maybe my feet need to go somewhere and spread the gospel.
- 20:58Lord, maybe I need to send a card. Your heavenly father, maybe I need to be
- 21:03the one that sends money to help somebody else do it.
- 21:06But Lord, don't let me look to within myself just to get more and more.
- 21:11But let me be wanting to build the kingdom of God for what it should be.
- 21:15Because when it's all said and done, Only the things for Christ will last.
- 21:21Lord, use me in thy service.
- 21:25And may I always look to you for all my answers.
- 21:30For when my soul is required of me, I want to reach you face to face.
- 21:35Run into your arms and say, Hello, Father.
