- 0:00What if our calling is to open up the circle of faith and
- 0:06community and the church?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Just a little bit wider.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Just a little bit broader.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Just a little bit more diverse than actually exists right now.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Not someday in some future far away, but today.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And then again tomorrow.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Picture this circle of chairs, right?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: This wonderful circle of chairs.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And some of them are full, right?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: But some of them are empty.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And they are empty on purpose.
- 0:49The gospel,
- 0:51the core of the gospel is a widening circle of open
- 0:58relationships.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Not a gated community and not a members only club.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I thought about putting up the members only clothing.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Does anyone remember members only clothing?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, I know.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: The jackets, members only.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, it was a travesty.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Nonetheless, Paul says, in Christ, you are all God's children.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Baptized into one life, no divisions.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: In our community, get the last word.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: That list that we read this morning,
- 1:50what a wonderful list of faithful women that are building the
- 1:54church in the first
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: century,
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: etc.,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: etc.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: All of them are included.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: All of them belong and all own faith.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: The church of Jesus Christ together with all the others.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Those, friends, aren't nice Bible words.
- 2:16They are walls that are being broken down in the first century
- 2:23and in ours.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: They are seats added to the circle of the kingdom.
- 2:32Some of us,
- 2:34me being one of them,
- 2:35particularly with my hearing problems,
- 2:39learn the hard way.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Like Peter, right?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: He learns the hard way in these scriptures.
- 2:45Acts 10,
- 2:46though,
- 2:47he says,
- 2:47God shows no partiality,
- 2:51no favorites,
- 2:53only family.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: In the story about Cornelius, Peter goes to Cornelius' house.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And Peter was everything that Cornelius was not.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And Cornelius was everything that Peter was not.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Cornelius was a Roman.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: He was powerful.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: He was connected politically.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And he was unclean.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Peter should not have gone down.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Into his house.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: But God.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Changes a Gentile kitchen.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Into holy ground.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Peter.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Vision is retrained.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: His eyes.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: See new things.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And his heart is reformed.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: About what the gospel.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Is all about.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Unclean animals.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Lord.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Now clean.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And a heart.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: lifted into relationships.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: He says, don't call unclean what God calls clean.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And that sentence can still save churches, friends.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: It can still save friendships.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: It can save families.
- 4:12It can save communities,
- 4:15particularly in our world that is so polarized right now.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And then Acts 15, the church, they argue.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: The text is very clear about that.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: There's disagreement.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: They argue about all of this.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: But then they pray.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And then they listen.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: And once again, grace wins the day.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: He says, we believe we are saved by grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Not by grace.
- 4:50gatekeeping and not by following the Old Testament laws,
- 4:59not by culture tests.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: That was controversial.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: It created conflict in the first-century church.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: It probably still does, right?
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: But it is nonetheless true today as it was then.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: The early church didn't avoid conflict, and nor should we...
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: They gathered it up.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: They worked through it.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: They talked through it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: They prayed through it.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: They listened through it.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And then they always came to the same decision.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: They opened the circle up wider.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And so must we today.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Romans 16 shows us this wonderful guest list that I would agree with.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Yvonne, kudos to you.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, my goodness.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Did you practice that?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Or did you just naturally come out?
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Because it was impressive, truly.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: You practiced a little.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: I would have had...
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: to practice.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm probably going to butcher it.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I'm probably not going to say it nearly as well as you did here.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: But Phoebe, she was a deacon and a leader.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Priscilla and Aquila, house church hosts.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Junia, outstanding among the apostles.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Trephena and Triposa, workers of the Lord.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Rufus and his mother,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: A mother to me, Paul says.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: That chapter reads like a potluck of grace.
- 6:35Different names,
- 6:36different ethnicities,
- 6:37different stories,
- 6:39different languages,
- 6:41one table.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: One table.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Intuit says that the church is God's new creation community.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Not sameness, it's important to note, but diversity with a shared Lord.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: People making a future together as a beloved community in Christ.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Barbara Brown Taylor reminds us,
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: hospitality turns strangers into neighbors,
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: into family,
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: neighbors into guests of God.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Henry Nouwen wrote of a downward mobility movement.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Don't climb over people.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Instead,
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: kneel to wash their feet,
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: which,
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: by the way,
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: we will be doing soon here on World Communion Sunday.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Richard Rohrer says love expands the circle.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Fear contracts the circle.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Christ moves us outward always.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Now, I learned this in Italy.
- 7:50My first Bible study there as a young adult was at a kitchen
- 7:55table at 10 p.m.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: The Bible studies, home Bible studies in Italy, started at 10 p.m.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: after dinner that was at like 7 or 8 o'clock.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: All right?
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: So the Bible studies started at a kitchen table at 10 p.m.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Espresso.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Laughter.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Tears.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: And then, if I'm honest, me falling asleep during the closing prayer.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Because I was not used to that.
- 8:35In Italy,
- 8:36and I believe it needs to be true here,
- 8:38we did not start with rules,
- 8:41okay?
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: We started with open relationships.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: We started with names.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: We started with friendships.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: We started with stories.
- 8:51We started with love and an open and relational God that wanted
- 8:58to be part of their lives.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And then God did the rest.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Business has taught me these things too.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: A hotel lobby can become a church.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I remember when I was there,
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: I called my wife one day and I said,
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Beth,
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I really didn't want to go back into ministry,
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: but I feel like I got a church again,
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: which I think prepared me to be willing to accept this call here.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And my farm venue hosts grace all of the time.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: My encouragement to you today is open up your circles as well.
- 9:42Open up your circle at work and invite that quiet little intern
- 9:48to lunch and have a
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: conversation and listen to their stories,
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: right?
- 9:54Ask the night shift tech,
- 9:56who nobody ever talks to,
- 9:58to tell you her story,
- 10:02right?
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Open it up at school, right?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Sit with a new student.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Share your notes.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Don't cheat on tests.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: But share those notes, not rumors, all right?
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Open it up at home, at a chair for the neighbor kid.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Bless the noisy dinner.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: And let's open it here, right?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Move towards someone you don't know.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Smile at them.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Say hello.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Use their name in a prayer.
- 10:38I'm going to leave you with three simple steps,
- 10:42three simple movements for you this week.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Look.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Linger.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Lift.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Lift.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Eyes, time, encouragement.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Look with gospel eyes.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Ask prayerfully, who's missing?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Who's missing in the circle?
- 11:09And if you don't see it the first time,
- 11:11ask again and again and again until you see them.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Linger without rushing.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Listen to people.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Listen for their pain.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Listen for their joy.
- 11:29And then let your silence in listening to their story do some
- 11:36loving pastoral work.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Linger.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Linger without rushing all of the time.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: I already did that.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Lift with practical help and ride.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Give them a ride.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Give them a meal.
- 11:52Give them a recommendation of where's a really good place to
- 11:56eat during the day,
- 11:58right?
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: These small lifts can change people's lives.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Kids?
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Where are the kids?
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, they're sleeping over there.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: You can do this too.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Bus rides at recess.
- 12:16You can see the people that are not having friends that are
- 12:21needing a lift somewhere.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Youth, you can claim this call too.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Clubs and teams.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: We need people in those places that are including folks.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Be the one who notices others.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And adults...
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: We really need to do our best to practice Monday faith, right?
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Carrying Christ into our meetings,
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: turning circles into opportunities to love and to listen and to care.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Now, what keeps us from this?
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Well, sometimes it's fear.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's frustration.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's fatigue, right?
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it is false boundary lines.
- 13:11Sometimes our maps are old about what the boundaries are and
- 13:19what they should be.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Like Peter's
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: were, right?
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: But God, I believe, is editing them.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: The Spirit continues to nudge us.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Go with them, doubting nothing.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Trust me with the next chair.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite theologians,
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Stanley Hauerwas,
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: says that the church's politics is how we treat each other.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: That is supposed to be the politics of the church.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And our witness needs to become our way.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Our love needs to become our lifestyle.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: And our practice needs to be all about peace.
- 14:02Now,
- 14:03I know what some of you are thinking,
- 14:05but opening the circle is not anything goes.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: All right?
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: It's not anything goes.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: It is grace is going to lead us with Jesus as Lord.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: So, a word to anyone who feels outside today.
- 14:25You are already on God's heart and you have been on God's heart
- 14:30for a very,
- 14:31very long time.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And we have saved a seat for you here.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: A word to those of you that like to guard the circle.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Thank you for caring, right?
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: But now, help us widen the circle wisely.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And a word for all of us this morning.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Keep saying this over again, but I love it.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: The net won't break.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: The church won't break if we apply these things in our lives.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Grace can hold all of us,
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: not just the ones that are here,
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: but the ones that I believe God is calling to come.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: We are called to open the circle.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: We are called to be one in Christ.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And we are called to go first in grace.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Amen.
