- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number two
- 0:21Speaker 1: and today the show, we're joined by Adam Hayes to
- 0:24Speaker 1: dive deep into his tactics for consistently locating the best
- 0:28Speaker 1: buck in the neighborhood. And welcome to the Wired to
- 0:36Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X, And today
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm joined by Adam Hayes and we're focusing specifically on
- 0:46Speaker 1: the topic of finding the best buck in your area.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And Adam seemed like they got to talk about this
- 0:52Speaker 1: topic with because he does that year after year after year. Now,
- 0:57Speaker 1: shooting big buck is not all the hunting is all about.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's not for everyone. It's not something you gotta do,
- 1:03Speaker 1: but for some folks, those who seek the greatest deer
- 1:06Speaker 1: hunting challenge possible, the goal of finding and hunting the
- 1:09Speaker 1: biggest and oldest buck in your neck of the woods.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Is this this task, this mission that can be incredibly
- 1:15Speaker 1: rewarding and frustrating, But somehow Adam seems to do it
- 1:21Speaker 1: with ease. Now, you might be familiar with Adam from
- 1:23Speaker 1: his appearances in various magazines or his show Team two hundred,
- 1:28Speaker 1: or from the fact that he's pretty widely known as
- 1:30Speaker 1: one of the few people out there who have killed
- 1:33Speaker 1: four free range white tail bucks that eclips the magic
- 1:36Speaker 1: two inch mark. So needless to say, he's got a
- 1:41Speaker 1: lot of experience finding and targeting bruiser white tails, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: today I picked his brain for every single idea, tip
- 1:49Speaker 1: and tactic I could possibly find that he has for
- 1:52Speaker 1: how to find those kinds of deer, how to locate
- 1:54Speaker 1: the best buck and whatever area might be in. We
- 1:57Speaker 1: discussed that and we break it down how to do
- 1:59Speaker 1: an winter in the summer and in the season. So,
- 2:04Speaker 1: without further ado, let's take a really quick break and
- 2:06Speaker 1: then we'll get to my chat with Adam Hayes in
- 2:10Speaker 1: a one more quick announcement For all of you guys

- 3:20Speaker 1: Alright with me. Now on the line is Adam Hayes.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Welcome back to the show. Adam, Thanks Mark, glad to
- 3:26Speaker 1: be here. Yeah. I just was looking back on the
- 3:31Speaker 1: archives to see when we had you on last and
- 3:34Speaker 1: this is crazy to me, but it was four years
- 3:37Speaker 1: ago that we did that episode. It does not seem
- 3:40Speaker 1: like it's been that long at all. Time flies when
- 3:43Speaker 1: you're having fun. I know that is Uh, that is
- 3:47Speaker 1: the truth. So I'm glad, glad we're finally circling back again.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And speaking of having fun, Uh, are you having a
- 3:54Speaker 1: good late summer early fall period? You get excited for
- 3:58Speaker 1: the season to kick off here soon? Yeah, I'm getting excited. Uh,
- 4:02Speaker 1: just summer just flew by and got some good deer
- 4:05Speaker 1: on camera, so might just get after him. Yeah, I'm
- 4:09Speaker 1: right there with you. And uh, speaking of those good
- 4:12Speaker 1: deer and camera, that kinda ties into the main the
- 4:17Speaker 1: main focus area I thought we could try to dive
- 4:20Speaker 1: into today. And I know last time we chatted it
- 4:23Speaker 1: was kind of a holistic view of everything you're doing
- 4:27Speaker 1: to target big old bucks, And today I thought we
- 4:30Speaker 1: can narrow in to one slice of that which you
- 4:33Speaker 1: seem to be particularly good at, which is locating the
- 4:36Speaker 1: best buck in the neighborhood, like finding that very biggest
- 4:40Speaker 1: oldest buck in whatever neck of the woods it is
- 4:42Speaker 1: that you're in, and then you just zero in on
- 4:44Speaker 1: that deer and you it seems to be that you're
- 4:47Speaker 1: getting within range of that deer more often than most
- 4:50Speaker 1: other people out there. So I thought we could dive
- 4:55Speaker 1: into all facets of that. So everything from you know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: preseason work and scouting all the way to what you're
- 5:00Speaker 1: doing in season, everything from actual hunting to trail cameras
- 5:05Speaker 1: to whatever else it might be. Um, but I gotta
- 5:08Speaker 1: ask you alluded to it. You've got a couple of
- 5:11Speaker 1: good bucks on camera. Do you have a couple of
- 5:14Speaker 1: these bucks in your sites already that you think you're
- 5:15Speaker 1: going to be the target for this year? Yet? Yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I've got a couple of target bucks. I've not seen
- 5:22Speaker 1: a deer that I thought was pushing two hundred incheons
- 5:25Speaker 1: this year, but one dear in particular been chasing for
- 5:29Speaker 1: a four year at home, and big deer over in
- 5:32Speaker 1: Illinois have been after for a couple of years. So
- 5:35Speaker 1: that's what it's all about with me. I'd rather be
- 5:38Speaker 1: chasing a specific animal than just out there deer hunting.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's really what drives me these days is um, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: having some history on a deer and trying to figure
- 5:48Speaker 1: it out and playing that game with them a supposed
- 5:51Speaker 1: to just sitting there hoping a big one is gonna
- 5:53Speaker 1: show up. Yeah, I hear you. I'm right there too.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So how does that process start for you? You You know,
- 5:59Speaker 1: let's say two thousand eighteen season ended, two thousand nineteen
- 6:03Speaker 1: has started when when you went into this year. Let's
- 6:05Speaker 1: let's look at this year as a perfect example. How
- 6:08Speaker 1: did the process start for you as far as trying
- 6:11Speaker 1: to either relocate a buck you new from past years
- 6:13Speaker 1: or find whatever that buck will be a new buck
- 6:16Speaker 1: might be this year. When did that start? What's it
- 6:19Speaker 1: start looking like? Is it is it right away in
- 6:21Speaker 1: the postseason or do you wait till the summer? How
- 6:23Speaker 1: do you start locating that? Dear? It's really important to
- 6:26Speaker 1: get out in the woods, we think before things start
- 6:28Speaker 1: greening up. I mean a lot of guys get out hunting,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and I do shift hunt. I'm really looking for you know, handlers,
- 6:37Speaker 1: off specific animals though, as opposed to just out comb
- 6:40Speaker 1: in the woods looking for looking for a horn here
- 6:43Speaker 1: or there. But it's a great time to get out
- 6:45Speaker 1: and really, you know, everything's kind of really laid out
- 6:49Speaker 1: for you. Um as far as the previous season. You know,
- 6:53Speaker 1: obviously rubs, trails, scrapes, this sort of thing, But the
- 6:56Speaker 1: main thing I look for late season like that when
- 6:59Speaker 1: I'm after a specific buck, is are the core areas,
- 7:03Speaker 1: you know, areas where those deers spend the majority of
- 7:06Speaker 1: their time in October especially, you know, thick, thick betting
- 7:11Speaker 1: areas that are going to have concentrations of large RUPs
- 7:15Speaker 1: because you know, getting after a specific deer excuse me,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I like to get after him in October obviously before
- 7:22Speaker 1: the route when they're still pretty predictable and on a
- 7:25Speaker 1: on a set pattern doing pretty much the same thing
- 7:28Speaker 1: every day. But you've got to know, you know, right
- 7:31Speaker 1: where those dinner a betting and food sources are pretty obvious.
- 7:36Speaker 1: But early season they're doing the same thing every day,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and some guys struggle with killing deer then, like during
- 7:44Speaker 1: the October lowy because a deer doing it the same
- 7:50Speaker 1: thing but in such a small area and it's tough
- 7:53Speaker 1: to get into those spots without tipping them off. He
- 7:56Speaker 1: usually get one crack out of them and that it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: game O for or things get a lot tougher. So
- 8:02Speaker 1: that's really what I focus on that time of years,
- 8:04Speaker 1: finding the core areas where this big deer bet or betting.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Early season they're doing a lot of rugs and everything
- 8:10Speaker 1: is pretty much right there laid out for you to
- 8:13Speaker 1: find um late season is so so what you know,
- 8:19Speaker 1: Let's say it's a property that you know you've hunt
- 8:22Speaker 1: in the past. There's a buck that you think made
- 8:24Speaker 1: it to the next year. Now you're out there in
- 8:26Speaker 1: January or February and March whatever it is, and you're
- 8:29Speaker 1: looking for these core areas. Once you find a spot
- 8:33Speaker 1: you think is his core area, maybe in the past,
- 8:35Speaker 1: like you, you've hypothesized that, Hey, I think this buck
- 8:38Speaker 1: is hanging out in this little zone. What are you
- 8:40Speaker 1: really trying to do them? At that point? If you
- 8:42Speaker 1: know that one of these pockets is one of his
- 8:44Speaker 1: little core betting areas, do you go in there and
- 8:46Speaker 1: try to actually take it even further and say, Okay,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I know this is zone. This five acres or fifteen
- 8:53Speaker 1: acres or whatever seems to be his core. Do you
- 8:56Speaker 1: go in there and try to precisely pick I bet
- 8:58Speaker 1: you he beds in this exact spot some days. I
- 9:00Speaker 1: bet you beds in this exact spot some days. Or
- 9:02Speaker 1: do you try to find exactly the routes? Do you
- 9:04Speaker 1: think that deer is coming in? What are you actually
- 9:06Speaker 1: doing when you're there on March one looking at the
- 9:09Speaker 1: core area. Well, it's really all the above. I mean,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you gotta have a really good idea where he's betting
- 9:14Speaker 1: at and it's really a matter of almost you know,
- 9:18Speaker 1: thinking like the deer. So if you know where he's betting,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know where the food sources are are and where
- 9:25Speaker 1: he's gonna want to go. Number one, what travel routes
- 9:30Speaker 1: are going to take to get there? And probably the
- 9:32Speaker 1: most important is what kind of wind is he gonna
- 9:34Speaker 1: need to feel safe enough to get up in moon
- 9:37Speaker 1: during daylight to get there? Because my whole regiment is
- 9:41Speaker 1: all about finding a weak spot somewhere on that travel
- 9:46Speaker 1: pattern where you can get within bow range of him
- 9:48Speaker 1: while he's using the wind to his advantage, because you know,
- 9:52Speaker 1: a five six seven year old buck in October is
- 9:57Speaker 1: probably just gonna lay there in his bed until dark
- 9:59Speaker 1: and let he's got a few things in his favor,
- 10:02Speaker 1: particularly a good wind. You know, weather influences mature deer
- 10:07Speaker 1: to move, and obviously the moon to him a big
- 10:09Speaker 1: follower on the moon. You know, when you can line
- 10:12Speaker 1: a few of those things up, it's uh, that's when
- 10:15Speaker 1: you catch those big deer making mistakes. But you know,
- 10:18Speaker 1: it's really about just like I said, trying to think.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I think, like the deer, what's gonna what's it gonna
- 10:24Speaker 1: take for that deer to feel comfortable to get up
- 10:26Speaker 1: and move and finding you know, an ambush spot along
- 10:29Speaker 1: there while he's using the wind to his advantage, and
- 10:32Speaker 1: those spots are tough to find. You It's hard enough
- 10:36Speaker 1: to beat a big bucks nose let alone given him
- 10:38Speaker 1: the wind. You know, That's really what changed my success
- 10:42Speaker 1: on big deer was when I quit hunting winds that
- 10:45Speaker 1: were good for me and started hunting to win good
- 10:47Speaker 1: for the animal I was after. So it was a
- 10:49Speaker 1: fair to say that you are looking at a property
- 10:52Speaker 1: and you're kind of finding these core areas, and those
- 10:56Speaker 1: core areas kind of become like a hub on a wheel,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and then you're then trying to guess where are the
- 11:01Speaker 1: spokes coming off of the wheel these travel routes out.
- 11:04Speaker 1: So do you end up having different places you hunt
- 11:06Speaker 1: that having these different little wheels. You've got a coreer
- 11:09Speaker 1: here and a couple of spokes coming out, and then
- 11:11Speaker 1: you've got another coreer somewhere else. Maybe it's a different buck.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And if you spokes, is that kind of what your
- 11:16Speaker 1: maps in your head look like when you're thinking about
- 11:19Speaker 1: breaking down these properties. Yeah, I mean, because they're not
- 11:21Speaker 1: going to be headed into the exact same place every day.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I mean they're pretty consistent early season, but you know,
- 11:28Speaker 1: food sources change almost daily in October. You know with crops,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you know, the soybeans change from you know, being grained
- 11:38Speaker 1: to drying up, and they switch over to the eight
- 11:40Speaker 1: corners when they're dropping. And if a corn field comes down,
- 11:44Speaker 1: you know they jump on that right away. So I mean,
- 11:47Speaker 1: changing NonStop. So there's gonna be multiple routes a big
- 11:52Speaker 1: deer it can take. So that's where you're you know
- 11:54Speaker 1: you're in season. Scouting comes into play a lot. I
- 11:58Speaker 1: probably scout more of and I hunt during the season
- 12:01Speaker 1: also because you've got to be on the freshest sign.
- 12:04Speaker 1: You know, there's that stuff changing, like I said, almost
- 12:07Speaker 1: on a daily basis, and get to stay on top
- 12:09Speaker 1: of that stuff. But then then again that also causes
- 12:13Speaker 1: its own set of problems and issues trying to get
- 12:16Speaker 1: in and keep an eye on fresh sign how things
- 12:19Speaker 1: are changing without disturbing the deer. So you really got
- 12:22Speaker 1: to have an intimate knowledge of where that deer is
- 12:25Speaker 1: betting at, where you think he's going to go as
- 12:28Speaker 1: the crops and purfood, food sources change, and I mean
- 12:33Speaker 1: it's just, uh, you know, it's just a combination of
- 12:36Speaker 1: a lot of things they're going to play. It's a
- 12:39Speaker 1: huge puzzle. It's a huge puzzle. Now. Yeah, yeah, that's
- 12:43Speaker 1: a strategic nightmare. But that's what makes it fun. Right.
- 12:48Speaker 1: So I do want to talk about all that in
- 12:51Speaker 1: season stuff for sure, But before we get to that,
- 12:54Speaker 1: one more question on the on this, you know, winter
- 12:58Speaker 1: scouting of these star at these core areas, finding them
- 13:01Speaker 1: the spokes along the way. But what if it's a
- 13:03Speaker 1: new property and you don't know where you know, where
- 13:08Speaker 1: these certain bucks are typically spending their time. So if
- 13:10Speaker 1: you're brand new on the spot and you're now walking
- 13:12Speaker 1: around and you're trying to determine where is this best
- 13:17Speaker 1: buck living, you know a lot of people say, well,
- 13:20Speaker 1: you know, there's certain places I think the bucks should
- 13:23Speaker 1: bed like they'll be good thick cover. And then so
- 13:25Speaker 1: if you just go to the good thick cover and
- 13:26Speaker 1: you say, okay, this has gotta be his coreer, this
- 13:28Speaker 1: has gotta be his betting area because it's good they
- 13:30Speaker 1: cover um. But you know, maybe there's four bucks living
- 13:34Speaker 1: around there and one of them, maybe he's using that one,
- 13:36Speaker 1: And is that the best one? Is that the oldest buck?
- 13:38Speaker 1: Is that the biggest buckle? How do you actually go
- 13:40Speaker 1: about determining where the king of the hill is living?
- 13:43Speaker 1: Is it just by rub size or is that a
- 13:45Speaker 1: concentration or is it I mean, how do you go
- 13:48Speaker 1: about and actually say, okay, this little area here, this
- 13:51Speaker 1: is the big boy I think, or this is where
- 13:53Speaker 1: they're spending the most time. How do you actually make
- 13:54Speaker 1: that qualification? I'd probably rely on concentrations of I grew up.
- 14:00Speaker 1: It's more than anything. Um. But you know, on any
- 14:04Speaker 1: given property there can be you know, multiple bucks and
- 14:08Speaker 1: multiple areas that they use. So unless you actually witness firsthand,
- 14:12Speaker 1: you know, a deer making rub, it's hard to know
- 14:16Speaker 1: for sure. But um, you know, I use a lot
- 14:20Speaker 1: of mineral sites in those locations year round to keep
- 14:24Speaker 1: tabs on the bucks and to know which areas that
- 14:26Speaker 1: they're using. I'd love to set my mineral sites right
- 14:29Speaker 1: on the edge of these core areas, where you know,
- 14:32Speaker 1: when a whether bucks traveling um through an area or
- 14:38Speaker 1: you know, going from his summer pattern to his back
- 14:41Speaker 1: to his core area, when he sheds his a velvet.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Typically they'll you know, they'll hit those mineral sites that
- 14:46Speaker 1: I'll know when they're there, and you know, it's it's
- 14:50Speaker 1: a good idea to put them right on the edge
- 14:52Speaker 1: where you can get in and get out without disturbing
- 14:54Speaker 1: those areas. But um, that's a great way to keep
- 14:58Speaker 1: tabs on them, to know which deer are living where,
- 15:01Speaker 1: you know, and you just you gotta cover. On a
- 15:04Speaker 1: new farm, you gotta cover every stitch of cover that's available,
- 15:08Speaker 1: because you know, a big deer could be using a
- 15:10Speaker 1: typical you know, flat in the middle of the woods
- 15:15Speaker 1: as his quar area, or he could be using a
- 15:17Speaker 1: little tiny thicket right up next to the road. I mean,
- 15:20Speaker 1: you just never know where these big deer of little
- 15:23Speaker 1: pockets that they've found where they've learned to survive. An
- 15:28Speaker 1: older guy that it's hunted lower than I've been been
- 15:31Speaker 1: alive told me one time that if you've gone more
- 15:33Speaker 1: than a hundred yards from your truck, you probably went
- 15:35Speaker 1: too far. So I don't I don't skip any patch
- 15:39Speaker 1: of cover when it comes to figuring out, you know
- 15:41Speaker 1: where these big deer high net and especially on a
- 15:44Speaker 1: new piece, you just got to cover everything that's available
- 15:48Speaker 1: to you in what you've got permission on because you
- 15:50Speaker 1: don't want to miss anything. Yeah, what about scrapes, um,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, big hub tile hub type scrapes. Some people
- 15:58Speaker 1: like to really focus on those scrapes. They're back in
- 16:00Speaker 1: the cover and they use that to kind of focus.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And do you pay attention to that sign at all
- 16:05Speaker 1: when doing this early you know, postseason type stuff in
- 16:09Speaker 1: the winter still or is it just rubs and another
- 16:12Speaker 1: signs like that? No, I pay a lot of attention
- 16:15Speaker 1: to him. It seems like the bigger and larger breeding scrape.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So that's you know, those are the ones that you're
- 16:20Speaker 1: gonna want to pay attention to a November and I
- 16:24Speaker 1: normally don't find those on those isolated you know buck
- 16:28Speaker 1: travel patterns. Those are more typical for you know, all
- 16:33Speaker 1: your doughs and all your bucks are hitting them in
- 16:35Speaker 1: a real common area, which is where you want to
- 16:37Speaker 1: be in November. But when I'm after a specific buck,
- 16:40Speaker 1: I like to try to kill him in October and
- 16:43Speaker 1: that's typically not the kind of place we're going to
- 16:45Speaker 1: find them. But you definitely want to note those areas, um,
- 16:50Speaker 1: you know for November action, that's for sure. Okay, that
- 16:54Speaker 1: makes sense. So let's move the clock forward a little bit.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Now it's the summer. It's July or August, and you
- 17:02Speaker 1: kind of made you made a comment a second ago
- 17:05Speaker 1: that makes me curious about what you think about summer scouting,
- 17:08Speaker 1: because he said something about how these bucks moved from
- 17:11Speaker 1: their summer patterns to their fall patterns. So, right, a
- 17:14Speaker 1: lot of us talk about the fact that you're gonna
- 17:16Speaker 1: have these deer in one place in the summer and
- 17:17Speaker 1: then some significant portion typically shift their range to a
- 17:22Speaker 1: degree once a volvo comes off. So do you how
- 17:26Speaker 1: do you look at your summer scouting, your summer trail
- 17:28Speaker 1: camera pictures, your summer bean field scouting, when you know
- 17:32Speaker 1: that allow those deer going to be somewhere different in
- 17:34Speaker 1: a few weeks. Well, it's just something you gotta keep
- 17:40Speaker 1: in the back of your mind. And that's when that
- 17:42Speaker 1: late season scouting comes into play, because these mature deer
- 17:46Speaker 1: are usually going to be located next to a preferred
- 17:50Speaker 1: food source in the summer, whether it's you know, a
- 17:54Speaker 1: really green soybean field, alfalfa, whatever the case is, and
- 17:58Speaker 1: who knows why they pick a specific field, but I've
- 18:02Speaker 1: seen them here in Ohio where deer don't travel a
- 18:04Speaker 1: lot um relocate a mile or two miles away in
- 18:07Speaker 1: the summer, and then you know they're out there like
- 18:11Speaker 1: clockwork all summer, wrong every night, and then all of
- 18:13Speaker 1: a sudden they vanish. And that's where a lot of
- 18:16Speaker 1: guys have problems with them. They don't know, you know,
- 18:19Speaker 1: what happened where they went, and a lot of those books,
- 18:22Speaker 1: when they shed their vote, they automatically relocate back to
- 18:25Speaker 1: those core areas that I try to find late season.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But um, you know, the only thing hunt the only
- 18:32Speaker 1: thing definitely about hunting big deers, nothing's ever definite. You know,
- 18:35Speaker 1: some of those big bucks might stay right on that
- 18:37Speaker 1: food source right in through October. If the beings were
- 18:40Speaker 1: planted little and they're still green, they could stay there.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I've seen that happen before. If there's a good oak
- 18:46Speaker 1: drop in the area, they could stay right there or relocate,
- 18:50Speaker 1: you know to a different spot where they're dropping. But
- 18:54Speaker 1: typically September, you know when they should there's a lot
- 18:58Speaker 1: of stuff changing, and you know, a big, big deer
- 19:01Speaker 1: could stay right where he's at where he could completely
- 19:04Speaker 1: vanish and relocate. But nine times out of ten when
- 19:06Speaker 1: they do that they're going back to that safety area.
- 19:10Speaker 1: You know, they know what's going on, they know what's
- 19:12Speaker 1: coming in. Things are changing and it's time to get
- 19:15Speaker 1: reclusive again and that's normally where they end up. And
- 19:20Speaker 1: that's when those mineral sites come into play and having
- 19:22Speaker 1: a camera on and monitoring them so you so I
- 19:25Speaker 1: know when they you know, when they vanish from the
- 19:28Speaker 1: southern pattern, they'll usually show up on those mineral sites. Yes,
- 19:32Speaker 1: so tell me a little more about your mineral site
- 19:35Speaker 1: trail camera process. So you're putting these spots on the
- 19:40Speaker 1: edge of the core area. When you say the edge
- 19:42Speaker 1: of it, I mean, are you saying it's on the
- 19:43Speaker 1: edge of the field so you can drive right up
- 19:45Speaker 1: to it or you actually back in the timber, but
- 19:47Speaker 1: you're on the edge of the transition between like a
- 19:50Speaker 1: staging area and the good they cover. Like, how how
- 19:53Speaker 1: close to the edge are you really? When I say edge,
- 19:56Speaker 1: I'm talking about somewhere where I can get in and
- 19:58Speaker 1: out and check in with out disturbing the deer that
- 20:02Speaker 1: I'm watching, but close enough to him that he's gonna
- 20:06Speaker 1: find it and it's gonna have to be on his
- 20:08Speaker 1: travel pattern. You know, when he comes through the area.
- 20:11Speaker 1: They just I don't know, it seems like more and
- 20:14Speaker 1: more of these days to find these big mature bucks,
- 20:17Speaker 1: they just don't seem to venture off their set patterns.
- 20:23Speaker 1: You know, you can go out of their way to
- 20:24Speaker 1: find stuff. So you've really got to be either right
- 20:27Speaker 1: on it or close to it for them to define
- 20:30Speaker 1: it or to pay attention to it, or to hit
- 20:32Speaker 1: it consistently. So as close as you can be to
- 20:35Speaker 1: their core area, I'm on the edge, so you're not
- 20:39Speaker 1: disturbing anything if you have to go in and replenish
- 20:42Speaker 1: it or change batteries on your camera or whatever, you know.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And and a lot of times I hunt really close
- 20:48Speaker 1: to him too, so you know, I don't want to
- 20:50Speaker 1: go busting through the brush to get into a tree
- 20:52Speaker 1: stand I like, I love just being able to slip
- 20:55Speaker 1: right just inside the cover, not disturb anything, jump up
- 20:58Speaker 1: in a stand off if a big deer you know,
- 21:01Speaker 1: started to hit a mineral, which they don't a lot
- 21:04Speaker 1: of times in October, but you know, if he's making
- 21:08Speaker 1: a mistake, you got to be able to slide in
- 21:10Speaker 1: their undisturbed and take the crack at him. So yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 1: So what's your trail camera set up? Over those. I mean,
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm curious, like, do you put them away high in
- 21:20Speaker 1: a tree and aim it down because you're worried about
- 21:22Speaker 1: the buck spoken to the camera, or do you just
- 21:24Speaker 1: place a camera eye level. I'm curious about your whole
- 21:27Speaker 1: details set up for those cameras, those like stationary cameras
- 21:31Speaker 1: where they're over mineral side or something like that. Well,
- 21:35Speaker 1: most of those are there year round, So did deer
- 21:37Speaker 1: get used to him? And I haven't had a need
- 21:41Speaker 1: to you know, hang them tin foot up in a
- 21:43Speaker 1: tree or anything like that. I've not noticed where they
- 21:46Speaker 1: really disturbed the deer I'm after. And like I said,
- 21:48Speaker 1: because they're in there all year, going to get used
- 21:51Speaker 1: to them. So just a typical set up. Okay, And
- 21:56Speaker 1: are you running uh cell cams nowadays? Do you run
- 22:01Speaker 1: just traditional cameras? And and it's so how often you
- 22:04Speaker 1: going in there to check them at this point in
- 22:06Speaker 1: the year, at least when I'm in close to a
- 22:08Speaker 1: quar area like that. Yeah, I used the cell camera
- 22:11Speaker 1: so I don't have to go in there and check them.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I probably run about fifteen of those, and then everywhere
- 22:16Speaker 1: else it's just standard cameras that I've bounced around from
- 22:19Speaker 1: spot to spot. But those cell cameras are worth their
- 22:23Speaker 1: weight and goal, especially during season. So any of my
- 22:26Speaker 1: you know, kill spots that I'm actually hunting and I
- 22:29Speaker 1: think that's where I need to be, you know, I'll
- 22:32Speaker 1: definitely have a cell camera in there. So okay, that
- 22:36Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense. So let's say we're in
- 22:38Speaker 1: that late summertime period or early falling, like right now,
- 22:42Speaker 1: it's September, early September. You're waiting to get some of
- 22:46Speaker 1: these bucks on your camera, on your trail cameras. Let's
- 22:49Speaker 1: say you get a ping, you look at your phone.
- 22:52Speaker 1: It's September six, and here's the big shooter box that
- 22:55Speaker 1: you've been hoping to see all year. He's on camera
- 22:58Speaker 1: just outside of one these core areas. Is at that
- 23:01Speaker 1: point do you just let it be and keep your
- 23:04Speaker 1: cameras all where they were at because you want to
- 23:07Speaker 1: keep track of what other deer might be around. Or
- 23:09Speaker 1: do you go and grab some of your other cameras
- 23:12Speaker 1: or elsewhere and then zero in on this spot now
- 23:15Speaker 1: that you know your target bucks in. Yeah, it's too
- 23:19Speaker 1: late in the game to make a lot of changes
- 23:21Speaker 1: right now, So the less pressure the better. You know,
- 23:25Speaker 1: it's all about the element of surprise and and going
- 23:29Speaker 1: in the first time. And I mean a deer that
- 23:35Speaker 1: survived for five or six seasons, you just can't you
- 23:38Speaker 1: just can't make any mistakes. Not early season. And like
- 23:42Speaker 1: I said, this time of the year, they're doing pretty
- 23:44Speaker 1: much the same thing every day, but they're doing it
- 23:47Speaker 1: in a really small area. And if he's in there
- 23:51Speaker 1: and you catch you moving during daylight, don't change anything.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I don't change anything. I mean unless something absolutely has
- 23:59Speaker 1: to be changed. The key I just I want to
- 24:01Speaker 1: stay out of that area, let him feel as comfortable
- 24:04Speaker 1: as you possibly can, and then wait until I stacked
- 24:07Speaker 1: the deck in my favor with everything possible to get
- 24:11Speaker 1: him to move during daylight as soon as I can
- 24:13Speaker 1: slide and take a chance and killing him. Because if
- 24:17Speaker 1: I took the ten biggest deer I've killed, I bet
- 24:19Speaker 1: you nine of them were killed the first time I
- 24:21Speaker 1: went in. You know, I think a lot of guys
- 24:25Speaker 1: struggle with the fact that it's hunting season. I gotta
- 24:28Speaker 1: be hunting, which is understandable if a guy can only hunt,
- 24:32Speaker 1: you know, a couple of days a week or weekends
- 24:34Speaker 1: or whatever. You know, guys want to be out there hunting,
- 24:37Speaker 1: But I don't go through all the work and scouting
- 24:41Speaker 1: and effort to go in before everything's lined up and
- 24:45Speaker 1: take a chance on blowing him out, because like I said,
- 24:48Speaker 1: it gets tougher each time you go in there and
- 24:50Speaker 1: don't get it done. So you really got to be
- 24:53Speaker 1: patient and just wait for everything to line up before
- 24:57Speaker 1: I even take a chance. I'm going in, and nine
- 25:02Speaker 1: times out of ten it works if you can do that,
- 25:04Speaker 1: if if you can stay out of your area till
- 25:06Speaker 1: everything lines up. So so before we get into the season. Um.
- 25:11Speaker 1: One other thing I know we talked about this a
- 25:13Speaker 1: little bit when we chatted last, which was this idea
- 25:17Speaker 1: that sometimes a lot of folks will just focus on
- 25:20Speaker 1: hunting whatever bucks they have on their property that they've
- 25:23Speaker 1: always hunted or whatever, but that you sometimes will actually
- 25:26Speaker 1: go out there in the summer or off season or
- 25:29Speaker 1: whatever it is and seek out these top tier bucks
- 25:33Speaker 1: glass and fields and looking all around, and then when
- 25:35Speaker 1: you see a buck that you really want to target,
- 25:37Speaker 1: then you go about trying to get permission to hunt
- 25:39Speaker 1: there or whatever it takes to be able to hunt there. Um.
- 25:43Speaker 1: So when I guess question number one is do you
- 25:45Speaker 1: still do that question? Number two is if so do
- 25:48Speaker 1: you do that in the summer? Do you wait till
- 25:50Speaker 1: early September so that you know you're in the spot
- 25:52Speaker 1: that buck's going to be during the fall. That's really
- 25:55Speaker 1: good to be the toughest part of the game, anymore,
- 25:57Speaker 1: fine and quality deer that you can actually a hunt,
- 26:01Speaker 1: you know, and being able to find one, I mean,
- 26:04Speaker 1: there's lots of different ways to find them. You know.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I follow up on every lead I hear about on
- 26:09Speaker 1: a big deer. You know, I do a lot of
- 26:13Speaker 1: glassing in the summer. You know, um shed hunting new properties.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I'm a real estate agent, so you know I'm looking
- 26:20Speaker 1: at properties all the time. Um, you know, just any
- 26:26Speaker 1: any um any way that you can, you know, get
- 26:31Speaker 1: a lead on a big deer, you gotta follow up
- 26:33Speaker 1: on it. And I like to focus on sanctuaries or
- 26:38Speaker 1: areas that don't get a lot of hunting pressure, or
- 26:40Speaker 1: areas next to sanctuaries for good places. I mean here
- 26:45Speaker 1: in Ohio, I think just about any buck has got
- 26:49Speaker 1: the genetics to be a trophy. He just needs time.
- 26:52Speaker 1: So in order for him to get the time to
- 26:54Speaker 1: grow to be you know, Bon the crocker or two
- 26:56Speaker 1: intern inch dear, he's got to have you gotta have
- 26:59Speaker 1: us eight spots, so you know, anywhere we can get
- 27:03Speaker 1: next to or on a spot that has minimal or
- 27:06Speaker 1: no hunting pressure, you know, those are spots I focus
- 27:10Speaker 1: on on trying to find a newt here per se.
- 27:13Speaker 1: But yeah, I think probably the best times to really
- 27:16Speaker 1: locate one is is in the summer, when those deer
- 27:20Speaker 1: a little bit more relaxed and out in the beans
- 27:23Speaker 1: in the summer. And tell you that though there's not um,
- 27:27Speaker 1: even a mature dear is not out there every night.
- 27:29Speaker 1: I've I've noticed that quite a bit in the last
- 27:32Speaker 1: ten years, with more guys out scouting in the summer
- 27:35Speaker 1: and pulling off the side of the road. There's a
- 27:37Speaker 1: big deer don't like to be seen, even in July
- 27:39Speaker 1: and August. And there are certain nights that I focus
- 27:42Speaker 1: on in the summer to increase my efforts and success
- 27:48Speaker 1: on seeing those big deer out in the fields because
- 27:51Speaker 1: I can't I don't have the time, you know, to
- 27:54Speaker 1: be out there every night in the summer like I
- 27:56Speaker 1: used to be. And there are certain nights that are
- 27:58Speaker 1: better than others for catching those big dear out in
- 28:01Speaker 1: the fields. So you look at the same types of
- 28:04Speaker 1: factors like the moon and temperature and other weather stuff
- 28:08Speaker 1: like that to impact deer movement that we look at
- 28:11Speaker 1: in the season. Is that the same stuff you kean
- 28:13Speaker 1: during the summer for your scouting. Yeah, exactly. Maybe not
- 28:16Speaker 1: so much the wind in the summer, but definitely the
- 28:19Speaker 1: weather and the moon. You know, when you get the
- 28:23Speaker 1: cool evenings or an evening when you know rains and
- 28:26Speaker 1: then the sun comes out and you've got some moisture
- 28:28Speaker 1: on these plants, you know, dear just coming out of
- 28:30Speaker 1: the woodwork. And then of course the moon. Um. I
- 28:35Speaker 1: just in the last twenty years, I've just seen it
- 28:37Speaker 1: happen too many times when that moon's peaking in the
- 28:40Speaker 1: evenings that especially the maturity or seemed to show up early.
- 28:44Speaker 1: And that's really what I've focused on her and fift
- 28:48Speaker 1: twenty years now for those bigger animals, trying to locate
- 28:52Speaker 1: them in the summer. So those those deer though you
- 28:55Speaker 1: find in the summer, Let's say you let's say you
- 28:57Speaker 1: did this, you went out there, you scouted near some
- 28:59Speaker 1: different little saints where areas you found you found a
- 29:03Speaker 1: buck you're really interested in. It's it's August though, yes,
- 29:07Speaker 1: you glassed him into bean field. He was out there
- 29:09Speaker 1: every other day through all of August. But now it's
- 29:12Speaker 1: early September, and maybe like did you go and get
- 29:16Speaker 1: you asked on every property nearby and maybe you've got
- 29:19Speaker 1: permission on one of them or two of them, but
- 29:20Speaker 1: not September, and you're now you're trying to decide, Okay,
- 29:23Speaker 1: are they still there? Are they still around or did
- 29:25Speaker 1: there was there fall range somewhere? Totally different, like how
- 29:28Speaker 1: do you try to verify that? Is it just that
- 29:30Speaker 1: we talked about earlier? Did you go and put a
- 29:32Speaker 1: camera out and now you're waiting to see if the
- 29:34Speaker 1: camera starts popping in September? Or is there something else
- 29:37Speaker 1: you do to try to verify is he here? It's
- 29:40Speaker 1: a shot in the dark when you catch one in
- 29:43Speaker 1: the summer. Because you did, you didn't have a chance
- 29:46Speaker 1: to do your your postseason scouting to know where his
- 29:50Speaker 1: core area is, so you don't know if he does
- 29:52Speaker 1: they initially he's going to relocate to. Really, the best
- 29:56Speaker 1: thing you know for catching a big during the summer
- 29:59Speaker 1: and you find one on the field is just you know,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I call it um uh summer observation. And that's getting
- 30:06Speaker 1: up in a tree or you know, in a truck
- 30:09Speaker 1: from a few hundred yards away, and keeping an eye
- 30:11Speaker 1: on the area with a spotting scope, and and just
- 30:14Speaker 1: not tipping that deer off because you bust one in
- 30:17Speaker 1: the summer on debt and pretty much most of the
- 30:20Speaker 1: time he's gonna be gone. So you get permission on
- 30:23Speaker 1: any any adjacent spots that you can, and the last
- 30:28Speaker 1: thing you want to do is just busted deer like that,
- 30:31Speaker 1: to just keep an eye on him from a distance,
- 30:34Speaker 1: try to you know, you know, through aerial photographs and
- 30:38Speaker 1: some low impact scouting, you know, trying to figure out
- 30:41Speaker 1: what he's doing. But it's that's a completely different game,
- 30:44Speaker 1: you know, when you find one in the summer, when
- 30:46Speaker 1: you've got nothing other to go on other than just
- 30:49Speaker 1: seeing him out in the field, you know, that could
- 30:52Speaker 1: be that could be tough. So what about a situation
- 30:57Speaker 1: where like, what if this is actually happening right now?
- 31:00Speaker 1: You just got permission in late August, it's a week later,
- 31:03Speaker 1: it's early September, You've done the truck observations, you sat
- 31:06Speaker 1: on the hill of the spotter. Would you risk going
- 31:10Speaker 1: in and doing a walk about still at this late
- 31:13Speaker 1: in the game with your season opening four weeks from
- 31:15Speaker 1: an how or whatever? Or would you say, now, I'm
- 31:17Speaker 1: not even gonna walk in there once. I'm just gonna
- 31:19Speaker 1: start hunting running gun, you know, once the season starts.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I don't want to muck it up at all. How
- 31:24Speaker 1: would you think about things one month off from the season? Now? Man,
- 31:27Speaker 1: you just you gotta handle it carefully, and it's going
- 31:30Speaker 1: to differ from from, you know, one scenario to the next.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But one deer comes to my mind. You know, I
- 31:39Speaker 1: was chasing a giant eight point I don't know, six
- 31:42Speaker 1: or seven years ago, and he was camped out in
- 31:45Speaker 1: a really small swaving field and it was just surrounded
- 31:50Speaker 1: by a couple of fence lines and at a ditch,
- 31:53Speaker 1: little wooded creek line. And I've been up in a
- 31:57Speaker 1: tree a couple of times, and I saw him moving
- 31:59Speaker 1: across the field, and I knew the direction he was
- 32:02Speaker 1: heading in the evenings, but I had no stands in there,
- 32:07Speaker 1: so I waited till I got a good wind. I
- 32:09Speaker 1: knew that that deer was not gonna win to me
- 32:11Speaker 1: out in that field during the day, had a good
- 32:14Speaker 1: rainy day, put some rubber boots on, got all cleaned up,
- 32:17Speaker 1: put a stand on the back, and I basically walked
- 32:20Speaker 1: a creek creek line up to where I thought he
- 32:23Speaker 1: was entering um or exiting the field and hunger stand
- 32:27Speaker 1: and killed him the second week of season. Um, you know,
- 32:32Speaker 1: coming through the beans and and heading in that same direction.
- 32:36Speaker 1: So it's a matter of watching them, seeing what they're doing,
- 32:40Speaker 1: not alerting them to what you're doing, and just really
- 32:43Speaker 1: being smart about entering and exiting the property, making sure
- 32:48Speaker 1: you don't tip them off, being really clean and you know,
- 32:52Speaker 1: going in with the stand on your back, minimal disturbance, um,
- 32:57Speaker 1: you know, and sometimes even a hanging hunt, yeah, I know,
- 33:01Speaker 1: if if you don't have the opportunity to get it
- 33:03Speaker 1: done beforehand, you know, you might have to put that
- 33:06Speaker 1: stand and sticks on your back and do it and
- 33:08Speaker 1: and hang them and hunt the same you know, same evening, right,
- 33:12Speaker 1: all right? Is any of this process different? Um on properties?
- 33:17Speaker 1: You know? So we we started there and then we
- 33:20Speaker 1: went to this new property example. But now let's go
- 33:23Speaker 1: back to a property. You do know you've hunted a
- 33:24Speaker 1: farm year after year after year, you get a big
- 33:27Speaker 1: buck that shows up on your camera on your mineral
- 33:30Speaker 1: side on September five. Let's say, once you're opening days approaching,
- 33:35Speaker 1: do you still try to get some nights to do
- 33:37Speaker 1: some observations this last few days of the last week.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Are you still trying to do that or do you
- 33:42Speaker 1: know these spots well enough that it's just better not
- 33:45Speaker 1: to risk it at all and just wait till that
- 33:47Speaker 1: right time to hunt. You know, I love to have
- 33:50Speaker 1: things set pre set, you know, weeks or months in advance,
- 33:53Speaker 1: but that's not always the case with things changing. You know,
- 33:57Speaker 1: with a food source change and or hunting pressure or whatever.
- 34:00Speaker 1: You know, stuff can change at the last minute. Or
- 34:04Speaker 1: you know, you might have a new buck show up
- 34:06Speaker 1: on your property, but regardless, he had to be ready
- 34:09Speaker 1: to change it up at a moment's notice. And even
- 34:12Speaker 1: on a property that you know, Um, if a big
- 34:16Speaker 1: deer year after or a new one shows up in
- 34:19Speaker 1: a specific spot during daylight making a mistake, I mean,
- 34:23Speaker 1: you got to be ready to dive in and get
- 34:26Speaker 1: it done. And one of the biggest deer ever killed
- 34:30Speaker 1: was a dear I knew about, and after all the
- 34:33Speaker 1: postseason scouting and summer scouting I did on that property,
- 34:36Speaker 1: I couldn't find that dear. To save my life, and
- 34:42Speaker 1: I kept doing my you know, my distance scouting observation stands.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Finally saw that deer show up mid October one evening
- 34:51Speaker 1: out in the middle of the field. Um, I was
- 34:53Speaker 1: a few hundred yards away. He had no idea I
- 34:55Speaker 1: was there. Um sat that field for the next week.
- 34:59Speaker 1: He didn't go back up, and then cornfield on on
- 35:03Speaker 1: the end of the property went down. He popped out
- 35:06Speaker 1: one evening with the doze, and I didn't have anything
- 35:08Speaker 1: set up in there. So the next evening I went
- 35:11Speaker 1: in with the stand and sticks on my back and
- 35:13Speaker 1: hung in. Uh, hung on the edge of the field
- 35:16Speaker 1: and had dark right before dark. He stood up about
- 35:19Speaker 1: eight yards away and ended up killing him. So so
- 35:25Speaker 1: you gotta be ready. You gotta be ready to you know,
- 35:28Speaker 1: hanging hunt or change things up at a moment's notice,
- 35:32Speaker 1: even during season. Right, it seems like like as much
- 35:36Speaker 1: work as you do in the off season, being able
- 35:39Speaker 1: to stay on top of the recent intel is just
- 35:42Speaker 1: as important to flesh out that full picture. Um yea,
- 35:48Speaker 1: you mentioned observation stands. Um, so we're we're in the season. Now,
- 35:53Speaker 1: let's say we've done this postseason scouting. We monitor areas
- 35:57Speaker 1: in the summer trying to glass fields. We had mineral site.
- 36:00Speaker 1: It's out there that were getting pictures of box. Um.
- 36:03Speaker 1: But now the season has opened, do you I know
- 36:06Speaker 1: a lot of people go in there and actually, I'm
- 36:07Speaker 1: gonna take what I just bet said back. Let's not
- 36:09Speaker 1: talk about observation stands yet. Let's let's first talk about
- 36:13Speaker 1: opening night. Do you oftentimes go in for that opening
- 36:18Speaker 1: night kill like a lot of people do, or are
- 36:20Speaker 1: you still playing it safe in trying to do use
- 36:25Speaker 1: your observation watch, watch, watch, and then zero win on them. Um,
- 36:29Speaker 1: what does that first night look like for you? Because
- 36:32Speaker 1: that can be tough to do, to have the intel
- 36:35Speaker 1: to dive right in and go for a kill the
- 36:36Speaker 1: first night unless you can see him from the road
- 36:39Speaker 1: or something. Right. Yeah, Yet, I know what you're saying.
- 36:44Speaker 1: And just because it's opening night doesn't necessarily mean I'm
- 36:47Speaker 1: going to go in. No, I'm not going to go
- 36:50Speaker 1: in unless I've either seen that dear making a mistake
- 36:52Speaker 1: and daylight or I've got a few things on my
- 36:55Speaker 1: side that makes me believe that that deer is probably
- 36:59Speaker 1: going to get up in move and that's got to be,
- 37:01Speaker 1: you know, a good win for him. Um, a good
- 37:05Speaker 1: weather condition prompt that deer to get up and move,
- 37:08Speaker 1: or the moon. You know, and anybody that knows me
- 37:11Speaker 1: knows I've followed the moon for a long time. And
- 37:14Speaker 1: unless there's a couple of those factors, you know, the wind,
- 37:20Speaker 1: weather and moon lining up, the chances are I'm not
- 37:22Speaker 1: going to go in unless those things are on my side,
- 37:24Speaker 1: because you just can't go in and not get it
- 37:27Speaker 1: done early season, because that deer is gonna end up
- 37:30Speaker 1: picking up on picking up on you. Is Csmelia here
- 37:35Speaker 1: you if you don't kill him, catch you coming out
- 37:38Speaker 1: after dark. I mean, I want to kill that deer
- 37:40Speaker 1: the first time that I go in, And so I
- 37:42Speaker 1: want to stack the deck in my favor and make
- 37:45Speaker 1: sure I've got the moon pushing him to get up early,
- 37:50Speaker 1: some kind of weather condition that's pushing him to get up,
- 37:53Speaker 1: um the wind in his favor, so it feels safe
- 37:55Speaker 1: enough to move. You know, I want all that stuff
- 38:00Speaker 1: lined up before I dive in. And you know, I
- 38:02Speaker 1: don't want anybody to to misinterpret what I'm saying. You know,
- 38:07Speaker 1: I pay attention to the moon, but if it's not
- 38:09Speaker 1: a good moon, even doesn't mean I'm not hunting you know,
- 38:12Speaker 1: if it's opening evening and I don't have any of
- 38:14Speaker 1: that stuff going on, you know, I might be three
- 38:17Speaker 1: yards away at another true stand watching that area, or
- 38:21Speaker 1: maybe on a different property with another deer. I'm still
- 38:24Speaker 1: out hunting, but if I know where I need to
- 38:29Speaker 1: be to kill a specific deer, I want as many
- 38:32Speaker 1: of those things in my favor as I can before
- 38:34Speaker 1: I'm going to take a chance to go in and
- 38:36Speaker 1: try to kill that dear. Yeah, this uh, this big
- 38:40Speaker 1: Ohio buck you've got on your radar this year. You
- 38:43Speaker 1: said you've been hunting him for three or four years.
- 38:45Speaker 1: As that we said, yeah, yeah, do you have or
- 38:50Speaker 1: can you do you have a game plan? Like do
- 38:53Speaker 1: you already know in your head I think I'm gonna
- 38:55Speaker 1: kill him in this spot and I'm just gonna wait
- 38:57Speaker 1: for the right time to do it, or are you
- 39:00Speaker 1: going to be trying to figure that out in the
- 39:02Speaker 1: coming weeks, you know, having four years of history with him,
- 39:06Speaker 1: I do have a couple of spots that have kind
- 39:09Speaker 1: of you know, set the trap and have them prepared
- 39:13Speaker 1: and going to wait for you know, specific scenarios before
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'll go into those spots. But then also, you know
- 39:21Speaker 1: there's other places on the farm where I think I
- 39:23Speaker 1: could kill them. Just all depends on the deer. You know.
- 39:26Speaker 1: If you do everything you can to prepare yourself and
- 39:29Speaker 1: kind of kind of try to predict what you think
- 39:32Speaker 1: is going to happen, and sometimes that's the way it happens.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Sometimes it's not. Sometimes you know, the deer changes something
- 39:40Speaker 1: up or does something completely different. I mean, the only
- 39:44Speaker 1: thing definite about hounding the big deers, and nothing's ever definitely.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So prepare for what you can and be ready to
- 39:52Speaker 1: do what you need to if things change up. Ye
- 39:55Speaker 1: walk me through the scenario. Then let's if you don't mind,
- 39:58Speaker 1: let's use that big Ohio buck as an example. Um,
- 40:02Speaker 1: let's just say hypothetically that the first few days of
- 40:05Speaker 1: the season go by and you don't have that you
- 40:06Speaker 1: don't have great conditions, so you're not really diving in
- 40:09Speaker 1: there for him. It's it's October. Now, how are you
- 40:13Speaker 1: going about hunting him with? I know you've talked about
- 40:16Speaker 1: observation stands in the past. Can you just expand on
- 40:19Speaker 1: that a little bit? How you use observation stands to
- 40:21Speaker 1: try to locate and zoom in on where these deer
- 40:25Speaker 1: are and what they're doing. You know, it's a it's
- 40:28Speaker 1: a location or a tree stand that's outside of the game.
- 40:33Speaker 1: You know, where I'm sure the deer is not going
- 40:37Speaker 1: to pick up on me come in or leaving, and
- 40:41Speaker 1: where I've got really good visual um opportunities to catch,
- 40:48Speaker 1: you know, to get a look at them moving, making
- 40:50Speaker 1: a mistake, you know, watching them come through c RP,
- 40:55Speaker 1: watching them go through the food plots. You know, I've
- 40:58Speaker 1: got trail cameras on all those spots where I think
- 41:02Speaker 1: I might get an opportunity killing. So not only am
- 41:05Speaker 1: I going to be able to catch him coming through
- 41:07Speaker 1: those areas on camera, but if he hasn't discourt the camera,
- 41:12Speaker 1: if I'm in an observation stand up, might be able
- 41:14Speaker 1: to pick up on that. But you know, I know
- 41:18Speaker 1: how that dear moves through the farm where I've seen
- 41:22Speaker 1: him in the past. You know his history, um is,
- 41:27Speaker 1: you know, coming through the plots that I have set
- 41:31Speaker 1: up the White Toil Institute plots right on those Red
- 41:35Speaker 1: Moody means. I mean, he's been really consistent on that.
- 41:38Speaker 1: It's just a matter of where he happens to be
- 41:41Speaker 1: betting at and how he gets to those spots. Just
- 41:43Speaker 1: Dear in particular beds and like six different places, so
- 41:47Speaker 1: it's really hard to tell where he's going to be
- 41:49Speaker 1: coming from. So that's another thing to try to key
- 41:52Speaker 1: on on these observation spots. You know where where they're
- 41:55Speaker 1: coming from and what they're doing. I mean, you're just
- 41:58Speaker 1: looking for a little pieces to the puzzle. Yeah, so
- 42:02Speaker 1: you're you're up in the tree, you see the buck
- 42:05Speaker 1: I'm imagining you see him. You're thinking in yourself in
- 42:09Speaker 1: your head, Okay, where'd you come from? Where is he headed?
- 42:13Speaker 1: But what are the other things that are running through
- 42:15Speaker 1: your brain as you're trying to analyze, Like, you just
- 42:17Speaker 1: have this observation, You just got this piece of the puzzle.
- 42:20Speaker 1: What are all the things that you're trying to dissect
- 42:22Speaker 1: from this piece of the puzzle, Because I imagine there's
- 42:24Speaker 1: a lot of stuff you can glean from this ten
- 42:27Speaker 1: second observation. Possibly what's Adam Hayes trying to get out
- 42:31Speaker 1: of that trill? It pretty simple? You know, how can
- 42:34Speaker 1: you use that information to kill that deer immediately? You know?
- 42:38Speaker 1: You get that's when it's when you see him doing something,
- 42:41Speaker 1: see him making a mistake, you gotta you gotta react,
- 42:45Speaker 1: and you gotta kill him immediately. You know, you don't
- 42:49Speaker 1: wait for it to cool off. You don't go in
- 42:51Speaker 1: and hang a stand and give it a couple of days.
- 42:54Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta go in and get it done.
- 42:56Speaker 1: So just trying to take that information and use it
- 42:59Speaker 1: to figure out how I kill that deer as soon
- 43:01Speaker 1: as possible because things are changing way too much and
- 43:06Speaker 1: you never know what's going to happen. And that's that's
- 43:09Speaker 1: when you got to get aggressive and go in and
- 43:10Speaker 1: get it done. If you observe a deer, then let's
- 43:14Speaker 1: say it's October, you see a buck, do something. Are
- 43:18Speaker 1: you gonna go immediately the very next set, like the
- 43:20Speaker 1: next morning, or you gonna wait for the next evening,
- 43:22Speaker 1: or are you waiting for the next time the wind
- 43:24Speaker 1: does the exact same thing. When you say go as
- 43:26Speaker 1: soon as possible, what do you what exactly do you
- 43:29Speaker 1: mean as quickly as you can get in there without
- 43:32Speaker 1: disturbing the deer? You know, I don't do a lot
- 43:36Speaker 1: of morning hunts in October. I like to know those
- 43:40Speaker 1: deer betted when I go into the farm, and you know,
- 43:44Speaker 1: beating a big duck, beating a big buck into his
- 43:47Speaker 1: bed early season when he's on strip. Feeding pattern is
- 43:50Speaker 1: next to impossible early season. So I'm gonna take a chance.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And I've tried a few evenings. You could kill him
- 43:57Speaker 1: and I can't get it done. And I know right
- 43:59Speaker 1: where he's betting. I've got to stand ready or I
- 44:01Speaker 1: know the train need to be in for a morning hunt.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna wait till I get a good moon just
- 44:06Speaker 1: after daylight. Seems like that's your best chance to catch
- 44:09Speaker 1: them coming back just a little bit late in the
- 44:11Speaker 1: mornings during early season. But yeah, I mean, you just
- 44:16Speaker 1: can't go stumbling right in just because you see him
- 44:18Speaker 1: do something and not put any thought into it in
- 44:22Speaker 1: a bust, name and ruin, ruining the whole you know,
- 44:26Speaker 1: clue that you just got on what he's doing. I mean,
- 44:29Speaker 1: you gotta be smart about it. You can't tip them off.
- 44:32Speaker 1: So you gotta keep the wind in your face. You
- 44:34Speaker 1: gotta keep your keep your as much of your sin
- 44:39Speaker 1: eliminated as you can not leave anything behind. And you
- 44:43Speaker 1: know you can't go in and clear a tree like
- 44:46Speaker 1: the utility company just came through. I mean, you just
- 44:48Speaker 1: gotta you gotta go. You gotta go in and do
- 44:51Speaker 1: it smart. Yeah, Now does that change it? Although during
- 44:55Speaker 1: the run, because I always I have this internal dilemma myself. Right,
- 45:00Speaker 1: if I see a buck do something on October one,
- 45:03Speaker 1: I feel like there's a decent chance he might do
- 45:04Speaker 1: the same thing October two, because it's still relatively early.
- 45:07Speaker 1: He's in that somewhat of a betting to feed pattern
- 45:09Speaker 1: that's going to be hopefully kind of consistent. But if
- 45:12Speaker 1: I see a buck do something on November two, hell,
- 45:15Speaker 1: he might be two miles away the next day, or
- 45:17Speaker 1: he might have just been passing through a year behind
- 45:19Speaker 1: the dough. If you make an observation in early November,
- 45:22Speaker 1: during the heat of the rut, do you still make
- 45:25Speaker 1: a move on that observation or are you gonna say
- 45:27Speaker 1: that was probably a random I mean, what do you
- 45:30Speaker 1: got to lose? You know? At that point, if you
- 45:32Speaker 1: see him to do something one day, um, why not
- 45:37Speaker 1: take a chance on him doing it again the next day? Yeah,
- 45:41Speaker 1: So you go for it, you make you make that move.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Yeah you might as Yeah, you might as well go
- 45:46Speaker 1: where you get nothing else to go on. I mean,
- 45:50Speaker 1: we're not recreating the wheel here. If you see a
- 45:52Speaker 1: buck make a mistake, whether it's in October November, you
- 45:56Speaker 1: might as well try to capitalize it, capitalize on it. Okay,
- 46:00Speaker 1: I definitely want to be there if he does it again,
- 46:02Speaker 1: because if not, it's my mistake. Yeah, that's the worst
- 46:06Speaker 1: feeling too. If you sit there and you debate back
- 46:08Speaker 1: and forth. I I know because I've done this. I've
- 46:10Speaker 1: debated back and forth, and I'm gonna wait and see
- 46:12Speaker 1: if he does it twice, and then he does it
- 46:15Speaker 1: twice and I'm not there, that'll that'll stick with you. Um,
- 46:20Speaker 1: all right, can you elaborate just a little bit on
- 46:24Speaker 1: you know, how you're going in in season and doing
- 46:28Speaker 1: these hanging hunts, because you alluded to the fact that
- 46:30Speaker 1: you have to be able to set up in a
- 46:32Speaker 1: way that you're not going to spook that dear. Of course,
- 46:34Speaker 1: you can't clear out like a utility company. Um. But
- 46:37Speaker 1: for those that aren't already doing this kind of hanging
- 46:40Speaker 1: hunt often it might be helpful just to hear your
- 46:42Speaker 1: specific process. I mean, I'm kind of curious, like, do
- 46:45Speaker 1: you go in there with three sticks or four? Do
- 46:47Speaker 1: you trim any lanes at all? Or do you just
- 46:50Speaker 1: sneak up as quiet and don't touch a thing? Um?
- 46:52Speaker 1: Like your entire process would be kind of interesting just
- 46:54Speaker 1: to hear how you're actually getting set up uptight to
- 46:58Speaker 1: one of these spots in season, is only for evening
- 47:00Speaker 1: hunts or do you ever go into hours before daylight
- 47:03Speaker 1: and try to do something in the morning like that
- 47:05Speaker 1: that's tough to pull it off in the morning in
- 47:07Speaker 1: the dark. Um. Yeah, I don't do that very often
- 47:13Speaker 1: at all. I'll tell you a trick I did learn
- 47:15Speaker 1: though from Andre to Quisto, the original owner of Lone
- 47:19Speaker 1: Wolf tree stands, keep going and set up for an
- 47:23Speaker 1: afternoon hunt, and then if it didn't pan out, he
- 47:27Speaker 1: might dive right back into that same stand the next morning.
- 47:31Speaker 1: And I found that, you know, carrying all that equipment
- 47:33Speaker 1: and you know, stand sticks, bow, plus all my camera
- 47:37Speaker 1: equipment because I'm filming myself, that it's a lot easier
- 47:41Speaker 1: to go in and hunt in the evening and then
- 47:45Speaker 1: just leave everything in the tree. I mean, I leave
- 47:47Speaker 1: my bow hanging, leave my osonics hanging camera set up,
- 47:51Speaker 1: everything's ready to go. Just climb up in your all set.
- 47:55Speaker 1: And I do that a lot for morning hunts, but
- 47:59Speaker 1: it's difficult early season to do that, and you can't
- 48:02Speaker 1: do that with a lot of um, with every tree
- 48:05Speaker 1: stand on the market and I've used, you know, low
- 48:08Speaker 1: wolf stuff forever. You know, being able to go in
- 48:12Speaker 1: and hanging stands and a stick within a hundred yards
- 48:15Speaker 1: of a two hundred class white tail and not tip
- 48:19Speaker 1: him off, um to your presence is next to impossible.
- 48:25Speaker 1: But I've been able to do it with their stuff,
- 48:27Speaker 1: So I can't say enough about their equipment and the
- 48:30Speaker 1: stealth and quietness other products. But yeah, you know, putting
- 48:35Speaker 1: that stuff on your back, not touching anything, being extremely
- 48:40Speaker 1: sent free with um, you know, from my gear to
- 48:45Speaker 1: my clothes to my body, you know. And then when
- 48:48Speaker 1: you go into a spot like that that you might
- 48:51Speaker 1: not have been in before, you never know what's going
- 48:53Speaker 1: to show up on your down wind side. So you know,
- 48:57Speaker 1: I'm not going into those spots without my sonys. Um.
- 49:02Speaker 1: You just gotta cover all your bases and be prepared
- 49:05Speaker 1: for everything. And I do minimal trimming. UM. I don't
- 49:09Speaker 1: worry about taking five or six sticks in on a
- 49:13Speaker 1: spot like that and being thirty ft up. I hardly
- 49:16Speaker 1: ever hunt that high anymore. I'm more concerned about being
- 49:18Speaker 1: in the right spot and having a little bit of breakup.
- 49:21Speaker 1: And it seems like sometimes the higher you go in
- 49:24Speaker 1: the tree, the more you actually stand out. So I'm
- 49:28Speaker 1: I'm just concerned about being in the right spot and
- 49:30Speaker 1: on leaving any scent behind and being as quiet as possible.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Do you have a like a consistent process of how
- 49:41Speaker 1: you get up in the tree quietly, because like, this
- 49:44Speaker 1: is something I've asked a handful of people about recently.
- 49:47Speaker 1: I've just been trying to make my hanging hunt process
- 49:49Speaker 1: more efficient and quieter and faster, and so I've started, um,
- 49:55Speaker 1: you know, using a couple different gear ties that tied
- 49:57Speaker 1: two of the sticks to my hips. I put one
- 50:00Speaker 1: stick on the tree, I climb up, I hank, pull
- 50:02Speaker 1: the one stick off of my hip, put on the
- 50:04Speaker 1: next one, climb up, pull the other one off my hip,
- 50:07Speaker 1: climb up, and then I have alignment's or I've got
- 50:10Speaker 1: a toe rope down to my bow and a toe
- 50:11Speaker 1: rope down to my standard platform. And once I get
- 50:14Speaker 1: up to my top position, then I already have those
- 50:16Speaker 1: ropes on my hips. I just pull each one up.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I don't have to go up and down at all.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Um That's something that I've just been slowly kind of
- 50:24Speaker 1: working on and trying to make it more efficient. Do
- 50:26Speaker 1: you do you have a system place I've tried. I've
- 50:28Speaker 1: tried that. If I haven't found anything that works for me, No,
- 50:33Speaker 1: it's definitely ill. It makes a big difference. Yeah, it
- 50:38Speaker 1: makes a big difference if you can obviously undo all
- 50:41Speaker 1: your straps before you climb up into the tree, so
- 50:43Speaker 1: you're not messing around with all that stuff. And I
- 50:46Speaker 1: use you know, I use that sound barrier tape and
- 50:49Speaker 1: a lot of cameo hockey tape on all of my
- 50:53Speaker 1: you know, buckles and straps and stands. I mean, I
- 50:57Speaker 1: I pretty much eliminate any metal to metal contact on everything,
- 51:01Speaker 1: so that it only it only takes one little you know,
- 51:06Speaker 1: ting from a buckle hitting your stand to tip a
- 51:09Speaker 1: big deer off that might be better close by. So
- 51:12Speaker 1: I mean you've got to cover all your basis and
- 51:15Speaker 1: not leave anything to chance. But yeah, yeah, I love
- 51:21Speaker 1: to have a tree with a lot of limbs so
- 51:23Speaker 1: I can hang my sticks on the limbs as I'm
- 51:25Speaker 1: going up, so I have to keep climbing up back,
- 51:28Speaker 1: up and down, up and down. But I haven't been
- 51:31Speaker 1: able to come across anything that really works good for
- 51:34Speaker 1: climbing up and keeping all your sticks on you trying
- 51:38Speaker 1: to hang onto the tree and grab grab your sticks.
- 51:42Speaker 1: It's just you know, it's it's tough, it's a process.
- 51:47Speaker 1: What about it? What about this scenario? Um, let's say
- 51:51Speaker 1: you're going to go into do a hanging hunt. Maybe
- 51:54Speaker 1: you saw buck the night before, or maybe you just
- 51:58Speaker 1: are you know, you want to head to us spot.
- 52:01Speaker 1: You're walking in and as you're walking in, you see
- 52:04Speaker 1: some great sign, fresh sign that looks like it just happened.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Maybe maybe it's a huge rub that just got tore
- 52:11Speaker 1: up a couple of day or just a couple of
- 52:12Speaker 1: hours ago, or last night or something. You see something
- 52:15Speaker 1: that catches your eye. UM, I'm curious. Would you say
- 52:22Speaker 1: I need to hunt this right now and change your
- 52:24Speaker 1: plane and hunt that fresh hot sign right right now,
- 52:27Speaker 1: or would you say, well, I'm gonna put that away
- 52:30Speaker 1: in the filing cabinet, keep that as mentel, but I'm
- 52:32Speaker 1: gonna stick with my plan. It just depends on the situation.
- 52:37Speaker 1: And yeah, I just said I'll do everything I can
- 52:41Speaker 1: to hunt the freshest sign. So you're definitely going to
- 52:44Speaker 1: take it into consideration. But you've got to be able
- 52:47Speaker 1: to read the read the area, and you know, read
- 52:50Speaker 1: the deer and what he's doing and why he did it,
- 52:52Speaker 1: which direction he's coming from, and and just so many
- 52:57Speaker 1: things come into play, and being able to read it
- 53:00Speaker 1: and look at the big picture and see what's going on.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I mean, you love to be able to set up
- 53:05Speaker 1: over top of a you know, freshly steaming scrape or
- 53:11Speaker 1: you know, a rub that just reeks because it just
- 53:13Speaker 1: got shredded by a big deer and be right on
- 53:16Speaker 1: the top of it. But it's really about, you know,
- 53:19Speaker 1: looking at the big picture and why it happened and
- 53:22Speaker 1: why it's right there, and you know the best best
- 53:25Speaker 1: way to approach it. So it's tough to kind of
- 53:28Speaker 1: wrap all that up into one sentence and say what
- 53:30Speaker 1: to do. Yeah, yeah, that's that's the truth. Um well,
- 53:35Speaker 1: then explain this to me. What would it take? Like
- 53:39Speaker 1: can you imagine a scenario like that that would force
- 53:43Speaker 1: you to hunt right then? Um? Like, is there is
- 53:47Speaker 1: there one specific instance like I might be imagined in
- 53:50Speaker 1: my head if I didn't have a really great game
- 53:53Speaker 1: plan for the night. I didn't see a buck the
- 53:55Speaker 1: night before, but I knew I wanted to try a
- 53:56Speaker 1: new spot, and I'm hiking into that new spot and
- 53:59Speaker 1: I see this like you just described, I see this
- 54:02Speaker 1: huge tour up rub and it's it's stinky, and it's
- 54:06Speaker 1: obviously it wasn't there yesterday. Maybe, so I know what
- 54:08Speaker 1: happened between last night's walk out and this afternoon walking in,
- 54:13Speaker 1: And I also know that I'm in a typical transition
- 54:18Speaker 1: area and the winds right for me to hunt. You know,
- 54:21Speaker 1: if a buck were coming out of the betting area
- 54:23Speaker 1: is heading towards he might pass through the spot. That
- 54:25Speaker 1: scenario maybe to me, would say, Okay, you know what,
- 54:28Speaker 1: this is a spot of mature buck might likely come through.
- 54:30Speaker 1: And it looks like there was a buck that just
- 54:32Speaker 1: came through here last night doing that very thing. This
- 54:35Speaker 1: seems like a good thing to set up on right now. Um,
- 54:38Speaker 1: is that the kind of scenario that you might jump
- 54:41Speaker 1: on that hot set right away? Or what's what's a
- 54:43Speaker 1: different scenario maybe that that would cause you to hit
- 54:46Speaker 1: it immediately In that way, you know, it's tough just
- 54:50Speaker 1: going by sign because you don't know if it was
- 54:52Speaker 1: made at the middle of the night, you know, So
- 54:55Speaker 1: what happens if you find that fresh hoot sign and
- 54:58Speaker 1: he set up on it, but everything is not lining
- 55:01Speaker 1: up for that deer to move during daylight? So you
- 55:03Speaker 1: hunt there, you don't see him. You get down after
- 55:06Speaker 1: dark and you bump him going out because he's still
- 55:08Speaker 1: moving after dark. You know. I mean, there's just so
- 55:11Speaker 1: many different scenarios to think about. But I mean, you know,
- 55:16Speaker 1: sometimes you just gotta go with your gut and if
- 55:18Speaker 1: it seems like a good thing and in fresh sign
- 55:22Speaker 1: and a great evening and you gotta stand on your back,
- 55:24Speaker 1: why not take the crack at it. Yeah, it's hard
- 55:27Speaker 1: to it's hard to cart compartmentalize, you know, something like
- 55:31Speaker 1: that and say this is exactly what you gotta do.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut instincts and
- 55:37Speaker 1: do it. He thinks, right. But the main thing I'm
- 55:41Speaker 1: looking for is is other than sign, is to catch
- 55:45Speaker 1: them that you're you're doing something during daylight. Because I
- 55:50Speaker 1: don't care what you say, they're just no way to
- 55:52Speaker 1: kill a big deer unless he's moving during daylight. Sounds oversimplified,
- 55:57Speaker 1: but that's really what it's all about. I do everything
- 56:01Speaker 1: I can to catch the big deer movement during daylight,
- 56:03Speaker 1: whether it's seating from an observation stand, catching a picture
- 56:08Speaker 1: of him doing it, or like I said, just lining
- 56:11Speaker 1: up multiple factors. That's gonna put everything in that dear
- 56:15Speaker 1: savor to get him a moving early now, because if
- 56:19Speaker 1: we're trying to predict what he's gonna do before he
- 56:22Speaker 1: does it, you know, and if you got a good
- 56:25Speaker 1: win for him, got a good moon, it's pushing him
- 56:28Speaker 1: up and it's you know, it's a it's mother nature.
- 56:32Speaker 1: You know, it's an instinctive urge for him to get
- 56:34Speaker 1: up and feed. And then you've got a weather pattern
- 56:37Speaker 1: that's you know, high bre metric pressure or a cool
- 56:41Speaker 1: front or something that's gonna push him to feed. I mean,
- 56:44Speaker 1: those are things I'm I'm trying to line up. If
- 56:47Speaker 1: I'm just going and blind hoping that I'm going to
- 56:50Speaker 1: catch a big deer making a mistake, I want those
- 56:52Speaker 1: things in my favor. Yeah. Do you ever find a
- 56:55Speaker 1: situation where you don't get eyes on mature buck, Like
- 57:00Speaker 1: you don't have any observations sightings of a deer you
- 57:04Speaker 1: want to shoot, You don't have any daylight trail camera
- 57:07Speaker 1: sightings of a buck you want to hunt, and you
- 57:09Speaker 1: find yourself in a position where you have to in
- 57:12Speaker 1: season actually go walk and look for a sign to
- 57:16Speaker 1: help put you in the right position. Or is it
- 57:18Speaker 1: always is there always going to be one of those
- 57:19Speaker 1: other pieces of intel, So you don't need to actually
- 57:22Speaker 1: do a walk about of any kind. Yeah, I've been
- 57:24Speaker 1: there before. The last thing you want to do is
- 57:27Speaker 1: spend you know, a week or two in October in
- 57:32Speaker 1: a completely different spot. And if you've got nothing to
- 57:34Speaker 1: go on, no pictures, no sign, I mean, what are
- 57:38Speaker 1: you gonna do climb up in a tree and just
- 57:40Speaker 1: hope something shows up. I mean, you gotta go find them.
- 57:44Speaker 1: So worst case scenario if you've got nothing to go
- 57:46Speaker 1: on and it's time to get the wind in your
- 57:49Speaker 1: face and stand on your back and start, you know,
- 57:54Speaker 1: start cruising and looking looking for something to hunt, and
- 57:58Speaker 1: you don't want to spend a couple of the best
- 58:00Speaker 1: weeks of the season in the completely wrong spot. Yeah.
- 58:04Speaker 1: So I'm not one of those guys that's just going
- 58:07Speaker 1: to climb up in a tree and just hope something
- 58:09Speaker 1: shows up, just based on the fact that there's a
- 58:12Speaker 1: big deer in the area. You know, you've got to
- 58:15Speaker 1: have something to go by, and if I don't have
- 58:17Speaker 1: anything to go by, I'm going to go find it.
- 58:19Speaker 1: We talked about rubs already, m a little bit about scrapes,
- 58:22Speaker 1: but what about tracks. How much do you pay attention
- 58:25Speaker 1: to trying to find a big buck track? And and
- 58:28Speaker 1: does that ever kind of factor into your decisions or
- 58:31Speaker 1: into your scouting and use that as a as a
- 58:33Speaker 1: piece of the puzzle at all? Very seldom, to be honest.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I mean I've heard so many different explanations of tracks
- 58:43Speaker 1: and tracked sizes and the dow claws and if they're
- 58:46Speaker 1: spread apart, and how to tell a buck from a
- 58:49Speaker 1: dough And I mean, you know, see a big deer
- 58:51Speaker 1: track means there was a big deer there. I mean,
- 58:56Speaker 1: I decided him. I've never put a whole lot into
- 59:00Speaker 1: uh into tracks, to be honest. Well, scrapes though, we
- 59:06Speaker 1: talked just a little bit about it, But what kind
- 59:08Speaker 1: of scrape in season would you need to see to
- 59:11Speaker 1: get excited? Um, you know a lot of people see
- 59:14Speaker 1: these field edge scrapes, But then there's the talk that
- 59:17Speaker 1: that's probably nighttime, So then some people prefer scrapes and
- 59:20Speaker 1: other locations. Um, where's your head on scrapes when you're
- 59:24Speaker 1: actually out there during hunting season? And how's that factor
- 59:27Speaker 1: in new things? Yeah, it really doesn't matter what type
- 59:30Speaker 1: of sign it is if it's you know, tracks, and trails, rubs, scrapes,
- 59:35Speaker 1: whatever is. You want something that's fresh. But the key
- 59:40Speaker 1: that I'm looking for is a mature animal making that
- 59:44Speaker 1: sign during daylight. So I mean, they're gonna have a
- 59:47Speaker 1: trail camera on a trail, on a scrape, on a rub.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Get a look at that, dear, see what what it is,
- 59:55Speaker 1: and when he's doing it before I'm typically before I'm
- 59:57Speaker 1: going to hunt it. Okay, Uh, you know, when I
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: want some documentation, I'm gonna not gonna camp out on
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: a rub that a big year I'm after might not
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: have even made and ever visited. You know, do you do?
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: You look at a daylight trail camera picture the same
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: as a daylight observation. So we talked about the fact
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: that if you saw a shooter buck in daylight moving,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you would go in there and hunt him as soon
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: as you possibly could. Would you do the same thing
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: or the camera If you've got a daylight picture, you're
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: moving in and hunting that camera location as soon as possible. Yeah,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: he's still moving during daylight. That's the main thing. Where
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: where where do your cameras typically go in season? I'm
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: guessing that you switch them from your summer locations but
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: is that is that true? If so, how I've got
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: them monitoring those mineral sights back in the cover, I've
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: got them on the um food plots, I've got them
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: on the rub lines. I mean anywhere anywhere think I'm
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: going to get a picture of that deer moving through
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: an area that it's gonna help me know where he's
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: at and when he's there. It's all about, you know
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the particular animal, where he's at, and where I think
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: I need to be to kill him. You know, I
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: have a lot of a lot of cameras set close
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: to tree stands because I want to know when he's
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: passing my tree standing daylight. So you need to have
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: a camera close to that stand on the trail. Do
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: you do anything to try to get better camera pictures?
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Or do you place any kind of attracting in front
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: of most of your spots to try to get them
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: to stop there, or use licking branches or anything at
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: all on those typical camera sets. I'll use some set
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: occasionally get him to stop. Um. Like I said, I
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: do have a lot of them on mineral sites, so
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: they're going to be stopping anyway. Um. We're putting them
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: on you know, like a rub or a scrape, But
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: you do want to put us somewhere where you've got
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: a pretty good chance of that you're stopping. Yeah, you
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: don't want to put them perpendicular to your trail um
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: because I think you end up missing you know, pictures
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: of deer coming through. You want to catch them coming
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: towards the camera going away from it instead of just
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: you know, you know what I'm talking about by perpendicularly. Yeah,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: you want to get a little of an angle so
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: they're not just gonna flash in and out of it immediately, right, Yeah,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: How many cameras are you typically running or how many
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: do you think it's let me rephrase the question. A
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: lot of people wonder how many cameras they might need
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: to effectively cover a certain area. So maybe let's let's
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: let's start small. Let's say per forty acres. If we
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: think that maybe that's like a small property A lot
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: of people, maybe you can access. How many cameras per
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: forty acres on average do you think would be good
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: to get a salad idea of what's out there? Is
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: that one camera is it? I mean obviously depends on
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: how many you can afford and how many might it
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: might be one. It might be it might be one,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: it might be twenty. It depends on the property, you know,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: just being able to read the property and know what's
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: going on and how the deer using. I mean, sometimes
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: you can know if a deer is coming in out
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: of a property with one camera. Sometimes it takes multiple.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: You know, I'm hunting acres where that big deers in
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: and I think we've got fifteen cameras on there, but
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I want to know, you know, exactly when that deer
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: comes in and off the property and worries at and
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I've got you know, I've got it wired for sounds.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: So it's just it's just all about being able to
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: read the property. And you know, if if you've got
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: one specific area where the deer come in and out,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: it might only take one camera, right right, that's scenario
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: with that big buck. Again. Then we've been talking about
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: how do you think it's going to play out? Like
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: what I'm curious to hear if you if someone put
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: a gun to your head and said, Adam, you're gonna
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: kill that big buck. We think you're gonna kill that
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: big buck this year, But we we want you to
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: guess the scenario of how it's going to happen. Um,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: You're forced to pick the spot you're gonna hunt. You're
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: forced to make a guess on where he's better and
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: where he's coming to. You're forced to pick the night
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: or the day or the conditions it's going to happen. Um,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: walk me through your very best guess of how it's
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: gonna come together and what you would have done to
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: make that happen. I've got the three spots in particular
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: that I have ready for that deer where I think
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna if I get a crack at him, an
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: opportunity to an opportunity to kill him. In October, it's
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: going to be in one of those three spots. It's
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: gonna be on an evening where you know he's got
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: a good wind in his favor to feel comfortable enough
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: to get up and move. Um, that there has been
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: notorious for showing up in my food plots on the
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: red mood evenings from the Big Guide. So it's gonna
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: be a red moon evening. And yeah, but the knowing
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: when those days hit this month, I'm gonna have three
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: opportunities in October this year, beginning of the month the
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: middle of the month and the end of the month,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: and I think one of those three times is probably
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: when it's gonna happen, if it happens, And those those
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: red moon days, just for those if they if they,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: If you're not familiar with the red moon theory, we
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: talked about it quite a lot in our other episode
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: we did together, So definitely listen to that whole one.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: But can you give us just that the quick cliff
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: notes um by by what that means and how you're
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: looking at that, just for those that aren't familiar. Yeah,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: So I've been using the Moon Guide for twenty years
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: and it's just really about it has nothing to do
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: with the phase of the moon. It's about the position
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: of the moon in the sky and the gravitational pool
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: and how that affects maturitier to move because you only
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: have a handful of days each month when that mood
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: is peaking at prime time in the evenings, you know,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: and it's just another thing added to the wind and
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: the weather to push that deer to get up and
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: move during daylight when he's normally not going to do that.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: So those are the evenings I focus on, and like
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I said, anytime you have multiple factors like the wind
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: in the moon, the weather in the moon, or all three,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: you know, it's about stacking the deck in your favorite.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: It's you know, putting everything in your favor that you
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: can do. And you know, after you're using the moon
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: guide for twenty years, I've just seen it happen and
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: have killed too many big deer that just normally don't
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: move during daylight. But you killed him right when that
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: moon peaked in the evening. You know it's it's not
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: a gain. I mean, it's Mother Nature. I didn't invent
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: the mood. You know, the moon, the mood and the
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: gravitational pool is strong enough to move the oceans, the
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: biggest mass on this planet. You cannot tell me that
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: that does not affect animals and fish to feed. I mean,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think we've even really scratched the
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: surface on how the mood affects animals and people and
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: and everything on this Earth. But you know, I've read
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: all the research. I've heard it, all the guys talk
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: about the moon. Dad doesn't supported affecting deer. I'm just
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: stop buying it, not until somebody goes out radio colors
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: a bunch of matured deer and falls them during season
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: and proves to maybe on a shadow of a doubt,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: that it doesn't affect him, because I'm going by what
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I've seen in the last twenty years, and I've killed
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: a lot of big deer, focusing on a lot of scouting,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: knowing my areas, and waiting until the wind, weather in
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: the moon is on my side. And most of the
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: time I'm able to go in the first time and
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: kill him if I can wait for that stuff to
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: line up. So if somebody wants to argue with me
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: on on a better on, on a better regiment, you know,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: for killing big deer on all ears, but I'm just
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: going by what's worked for me, and that's that's worked
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: for twenty years. So that's what I focus on. Yeah,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: well I can't I can't argue with it. I know
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: that I've seen a lot of the same research that
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: has shown what you said, that the moon doesn't have
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: a significant, statistically significant impact according some of these studies,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: and the same things that have said that cold fronts
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: don't impact deer movement and other things like that that
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: so many of us can point to as as they're
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: being changed So I've always said that it just seems
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: like what they're measuring maybe is not the same things
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: that we care about as hunters. So total movement over
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: twenty four hour period, maybe it's not any different. But
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I don't care about total movement over twenty four period.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: I care about is a buck over four and a
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: half years old going to walk this extra fifty yards
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: ten minutes earlier, and if he's going to do that,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: and that makes all the difference in the world for
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: me as a hunter. Maybe that's not significant to show
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: up in these large scale studies, but that's the kind
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: of thing that can make a difference to a hunt.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: So I've always thought I feel like there's something like
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: being lost in translation there um that would be really
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: interesting to see if we could somehow measure what the
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: hunter would be impacted by, that would be really interesting
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to me. So I'm I'm I've always been game to
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: pay attention to all of it. And like you said,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: I don't know how important any one of these individual
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: factors is, but I'm gonna stack everyone that I can
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: together because you need every little bit, every odd possible
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: in your favorite because there's there's already so many things
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: out of your control. Why not take an advantage of
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: those things that you can exactly And I'll tell you
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: a great way to measure it. I see it happen
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: every year. You watch social Gidia in October, and every
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: time that Red Moon peaks, there will be guys posting
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the pictures a big gear that they're killing right on
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: the Red Moon, regardless if they follow the moon or
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: use the moon guide. It happens every year. It's not
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: a hundred percent. You know, guys killed big deer on
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: days that aren't good. You know, a good mood, I
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: mean nothing, it's a dent. But every time that red
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: mood hits, like guarantee, you'll see a spike, a big
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: deer hits the ground right on the Red Moon days. Yeah,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: I definitely. I think last year wasn't one of the
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Red Moon uh time periods that like October six somewhere
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: in that ballpark was, Isn't that right? Yeah? I believe so, yep,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: because I remember I remember a whole lot of deer
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: you got killed right around that time period. And I'm
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: pretty sure if I remember correctly, it lined up with
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: those Red Moon dates. And that was something that a
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: couple of us were discussing as it's pretty interesting to
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: see that there was this very very high peak, um
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: like more noticeable than usually even so, it's interesting, it's something.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: There's definitely something I like to pay attention to. And um,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I'm insured. Why wouldn't you pay Why wouldn't you pay
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: attention to it? Guys pay attention to the web there
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: and their nature, but not the moon. I mean, what's
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: the difference. You know, the moon is a satellite for
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Earth and affects us Earth so many different ways. Well,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: why would you why would you focus and be you know,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: have blinders on to just concentrate on weather and then
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: throw the moon out the window. That makes no sense
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: to me. Yeah, I'll take it all. I'll take it all. Yeah.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Why not stack the deck in your favor? Yeah? So, so,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: speaking of of stacking the deck, I want to dive
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: a little further into your scenario though. So we're waiting
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: until one of these ideal sets of conditions, hopefully a
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: red moon and good weather or the moon and the
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: wind or whatever it might be. Um, but you've got
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: three different spots you think it could happen. Could you
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: describe one of these just to help us understand, like
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: what kind of setup you have in mind to kill
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: a big buck um Like that kind of example I
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: think would be really helpful for people. Yeah, so I
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: think there's a deer um normally mostly beds in two places.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: One is right behind the farmhouse actually in an overgrown
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: you know, overgrown backyard basically, or in a CRP fielding
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: up close to the road along a little creek bed,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: and that you know, it's on the most down wind
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: side is farm, which is a very typical fur mature
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: deer in Ohio, we don't really have a southwest wind
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: and nine times out of ten of mature bucks gonna
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: live on the most northeastern part of the farm. So
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: whenever he gets up, you know, he's mainly going to
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: be on the most downwind side of the property and
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: can go wherever he wants to win in his face.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: And that's what this deer is doing. And there's you know,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: there's a corn field he could hit up close to
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: the road, which I saw him do last year. I've
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: got a secluded to secluded um uh food plots the
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: back end of the CRP and that he hits. Then
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: another corn field corner in the back of the property
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: then it hits so in his travel pattern right through
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: the middle of that block, he can hit, you know,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: any one of those four spots. You know, I've got
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: stands and all four of those spots ready to go.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: When when he shows up normally in any of those spots,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: it's always in the same spot. So I mean, I've
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: got everything um prepared. I know how to get in
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: and out of the farm without tipping that deer off,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: which you know, was a big learning experience for me
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: because that deer betted in so many places, and most
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: of the time he was bedded close to the road
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: and knew exactly what I was there, and I couldn't
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: figure it out. He'd show up for a day or
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: two on camera during daylight and I go down and
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: try to hunt him, and he disappeared, that deer dew
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: when I was there. He was watching me come in
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: and out. Now that deer. I parked within ten yards
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: of that deer one time, did he me though? He
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: was there until I got up on my goat, up
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: on my ranger to pull it off the trailer, and
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: he jumped up in the middle of the guy's backyard,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: you know, And in six foot tall grass. I mean,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: so it's been a learning experience. But so what do
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: you have to do to adjust that that access point?
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Do you just find a totally different side of the
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: farm you can come in on, or or what have
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: you done? Now? Yeah? I just had to come in
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: from a completely different spot on the farm, not the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: not the typical spot where I come in. I can't
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: park the house, I can't park get the pull off
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: where I normally come in. I I basically got a
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: park off right off the road and go down the
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: road and come in around the back side on the
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: quiet cat and complete do a complete loop around the
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: farm so that deer doesn't know him there. What about
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: scenario like this where and then this is maybe a
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: little bit of a stra from the theme of locating deer,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: But bear with me here. You're out there hunting and
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: you have you don't have anything to work with, let's say,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: or at least nothing recent. Do you ever go to
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: the idea of blind calling to try to locate a deer?
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Will you ever be in a situation for like, damn it,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: I just gotta start rattling a lot and try to
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: pull something in or grunt because nothing's showing up, um,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: and I need to force the issue. And I know
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: this is a time of year dependent um, but how
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: often does that of a factor into your your thought process.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: I'll do blind calling in November, but I really don't
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: like to do it earlier when I'm after a specific
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: dear because I think calling success really depends on your setup.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: You know, can you labor is good? Yeah, mature, You're
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: is gonna try to get down WINDOMVI or coming from
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: down windo of via when you're calling, and my stups.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: I like to put myself in a spot where either
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: a big dear kid get down wind of me, or
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: if he tries to my location UM that I'm set
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: up in forces him within bow range to try and
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: get down wind of me. I mean it's I think
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: it's deadly to be set up a early season within
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: earshot of a big in his bed and do a
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: little light calling UM while he's still laying there, to
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: give him something to think about in a direction to
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: head once he gets up. You know, I think you're
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: in a little competition in this area and something's going
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: on and he needs to get up and check it
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: out and investigate. But yeah, it's tough to be successful
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: on blind calling, But I mean in November, you know
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: it's all about time in the stand and bucks are cruising.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: You never know when one might just be just out
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: of eyesight that here's your calling and responds to it.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: So and all of a sudden I can come together.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: That's kind of scenario. About the scenario yep, ye. Do
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: you ever get to the point where you're in season
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: and you have to rewind all the way to the
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: tactics you're using in the summer? So by that, I
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: mean you get to the point where you have to
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: pull out of your hunting locations completely and get back
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: on the road and glass fields from the road again
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: to try to find a buck um like in November
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: or late season, maybe deer have all shifted again and
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: you're trying to relocate where these bucks are feeding. Do
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: you ever go to that extreme? Yeah? Sometimes you ask
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: you if they disappear, buck you're after got killed or
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: I mean, gosh, there's hundreds of different scenarios where things
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: change up and you've got to change your tactics and
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: go back to square one. But you've only got a
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: certain amount of time to get it done. So you've
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: got to do whatever whatever it takes during season. Yeah.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I like what you said earlier that that sometimes or
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: correct maybe clarify this, but I think you said something
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: on the lines of you scout more then you hunt,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: even during in the season. Is that Is that accurate
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: as far as spending those times observing from a distance
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: or doing different things, um to just narrow your hunts down.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: I've been slowly moving more and more of that direction
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: that I'd rather have a lot of information that leads
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: me to a few really, really good sits. I'd rather
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: have that than a bunch of sits that are just
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: kind of willy nilly. Yeah. Yeah, I read um read
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: a story by Miles Killer years ago that talked about
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: hunting from the outside in and what his whole thought
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: process was that he would start from the you know,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: the outskirts of a buck's territory and just keep classing
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: and monitoring the area from a distance and just some
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: methodically keep moving in closer and closer and closer until
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: he knew the exact tree you needed to be in
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: and the exact win that you're needed, and you know,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: really kind of adapted that over the years into what
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: I do and you know, it's it's all about hunting
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: and hunting and hunting and hunting, scouting for that you know,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: that one spot to kill him, you know, So I'd
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: really think it is a lot more scouting. What do
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: I say, hunting and scouting kind of kind of talking
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: about the same thing until you find that kill spot.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: You're actually hunting for that kill spot. I guess it's
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: a good way to describe it. You're hunting for that
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: you know, special spot, that weak spot or that place,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: that a spot where you can kill a deer. So
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I guess that's really the best way to describe it,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: as I'm constantly hunting and scouting for that perfect spot
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: to kill the deer that I'm after because of what
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: you find it, you know what you find where you
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: need to be, and you wait for everything to line up,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: you go in and kill him. How how often? How
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: often when you have that situation like, what are you
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: what kind of confidence level do you have at this
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: point in your hunting career and journey? What percent chance
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: do you feel like when you when you find a
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: spot like this that you feel good about and the
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: conditions line up and you're going for your first set
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: is it like a fifty proposition for you? Do you?
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: I mean, I know we're just ball parking here, but
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: what do you usually feel like you? Are you so
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: confident you've got this narrow down so much that seven
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: times out of ten you're getting it done. Now nine
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: times out of ten. Wow, that's that's what it's been
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: with all of my biggest books. So what about the
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: if you do? If you do, if you do all
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: the scouting, define the right spot, and you can be
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: patient enough to wait for everything to line up, and
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: you haven't alerted that dear to your presence, and he's
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: still moving onto his natural pattern and he's got all
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: those you know, natural instinctive pushes to get him up moving.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I mean, there's no reason why it shouldn't happen if
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: you do everything right. So, so, since we talked last
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: time on the podcast, you killed your fourth two plus
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: deer and that buck, as I understand it, there was
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: a little bit of this kind of scenario that we've
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: been discussing. It took some some working to locate him
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: with with cameras and then some some observation type stuff.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: Can you walk through that example, how you located that buck,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: how you narrowed down where the spot was and where
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: the weak spot was and how you ultimately killed him.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: Could you kind of walk through that well, it was
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: in Kansas, it was in an area I was familiar with,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: but I hadn't hunted that specific farm yet. But we
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: had a camera in there on the middle of the property,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: and that you're just showed about to nowhere third week
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: of October, the middle of the night. I didn't figure
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: he was living on the farm. The farm was located
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: in the middle of a block about two miles long
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: and a mile wide, so I had a pretty good
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: idea he was living on that block, but not on
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: the farm. But he was coming through there, just keeping
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: tabs on does now We had um food out in
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: front of the camera, obviously to attract deer. There's to
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: get pictures of them. So it was a couple of
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: weeks away from the next red moon and within moving
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: in the middle of the night. I wasn't in a
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: rush to run right out there, although I knew it
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: was a two giant, so I just kept kept monitoring
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: the camera. Obviously a wireless camera out there, so I
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: knew what was going on. Started studying, really studying the
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: aerials of the photo of the property, and there was
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: really only a couple of spots where I thought a
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: deer like that would be coming in and out of
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: the farm. So I knew what I needed to focus
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: on when I got out there and where I wanted
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: to look. So the moon was suposed to peak sometime
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: the end of the first week in November. I believe
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: I headed out there on Halloween day, full day drive.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: Deer were starting to move a little bit closer to daylight,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: but still you know, after dark, but not the middle
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: of the night, getting closer to evening. Got out there
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: was super hot, new deer weren't going to be moving much.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: I went into the two spots actually the two back
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: corners of the farm that looked like typical areas where
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: deer would come in and out. Um The camera was
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: set up in the middle of the farm, so I
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: didn't know where exactly he was coming in and out.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: But one spot really looked to me like it was
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: the spot. I mean, it was back corner, very secluded,
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: really low, really really secluded um Creek running through their
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: multiple fence lines crossing, I mean just like a just
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: like a hub of activity. Deer could come from any direction.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: And and the key to it was there was a
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: really deep creek bed that ran the distance of the
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: property right back to that corner. So I could literally
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: jump down in this creek that was like ten ft
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: deep but it only had a couple inches of water
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: and get right into that corner without making any noise,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: without disturbing anything. I really figured that was my best
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: chance of killing that during that corner, so got in there,
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: hung a stand. Um, I really didn't know, you know,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: like I said, what direction was coming from, because they
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: could come from so many different directions. So I really
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: had to rely on being clean and um counting on
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: the ozonics to cover you know, cover my down wind side.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: And it was one of those spots where you know,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: you could get in and out of there day after
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: day and not really worry about spooking anything. So I
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: think I hudded it that spot three or four times
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: that week. I did hunt the other corner a couple
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: of times, but I just wasn't feeling it over there. Um.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: I knew my chances were going to get better later
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: in the week as the mood got closer and closer
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: to prime time. It didn't really cool off a whole lot.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: I think it was like seventy five degrees on on
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: that Saturday when I finally killed him. But it was
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: an hour and a half before dark, really hot. Wasn't
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: even expecting anything to be up and moving yet. And
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: that deer shows up in the broad daylight on my
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: down one side, of course, I thank god does on
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: a kee's running. And you know, I killed the biggest
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: deer of my life when there was no rhyme of
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: reason for that near to be up and moving that
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: early on the I think that they're sixth of November.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: You know, he's just up moving, doing his thing, moving
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: into the wind. Had to win in his favor. The
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: moon was peaking that evening, and it was just one
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: of those things where you read the sign, you just
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: kind of look at the big picture. What's a big
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: deer need to do to move through this property and
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: feel comfortable enough to move um during daylight? And uh,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: and I don't know what else to say about. I mean,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: that's that's just the way that it happened. And yeah,
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: I ended up killing the biggest deer in my life.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: That's amazing. Now you bring up something that I think
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: is worth expanding on which is um, you know, this
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: buck did what he thought he had due to to
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: be safe or something on those lines. And this brings
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: to mind an idea that we we hear occasionally that
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: you know, a mature buck is almost a different animal
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: completely than all the other deer out there. And one
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: of the things that helped me a lot at some
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: point my deer hunting journey was I used to just
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: be like trying to hunt deer, and I would set
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: up in spots where I can see a bunch of deer,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: but you were never actually getting a shot at a
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: mature deer. Once you realize you have to switch and
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: start hunting this totally different animal, then you have to
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: think about things in a different way, and you start
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: hunting different places or hunting closer to these places in
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: a different kind of way. UM. So all that is
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: to say, what are some of the other things you
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: found the mature buck does differently, or that you're thinking
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: about when trying to guess where he's going to move
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: or how he's going to move. You talked about this
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: area being a hub and all these things going for it.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: I imagine you were seeing some of these things and
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: you thought to yourself because of this, or because I
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: know mature buck likes this kind of thing, or mature
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: buck tends to move in this kind of way, this
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: is the spot. Are there any things like that that
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: you can that you can speak to that come to
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: mind that are unique to how mature buck travels or
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: thinks or acts. The only thing I really think that
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: is unique about it is the majority of the deer
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: and they and they are a different creature, and the
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: majority of the deer and the deer herd are going
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: to be doing the same things that he's doing. They're
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: just doing it more consistently during daylight. In a big
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: old mature buck is still doing the same thing. He's
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: just doing it on very specific days during daylight. Those
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: big deers just don't make mistakes and they just don't
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: move that much during daylight or or they die. You know,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: they've learned what they need to do to survive. And
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: the unique thing about it is when they do it,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: you know, they do it for very specific reasons during daylight.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: And then you know, I don't think it's rocket science
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: and I don't think you know, uh, animals any different
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: than a mature hundred fifty but I do think the
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: mature animal that's learned the game of survival is doing
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: things differently, just from the sole reason that his main
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: goal is to survive and he's not going to make
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: any mistakes. So you've got to really hone in on
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: not only what he's doing, but when he's doing it.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: It's all about timing. The timing. The timing is really
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: the key to it. When is that you're going to
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: do it during daylight so you can kill him and
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: not tipping him off before you do it. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: getting those high quality hunts. Getting a couple of high
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: quality hunts just seems to be so much more important
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: then than a whole bunch of credits. Yeah, it's all
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: about quality over quantity. Hunting smarter not harder, novembers. When
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: you want to hunt harder, you know, there's guys that
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: their hunt and then there's a guy that hunt specific deer.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: When you're on a specific deer, you've got hunt smarter,
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: not harder. Yeah. Is there is there anything that we've
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: missed when it comes to this specific idea of locating
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: them of zeroing in on them. Um, I feel like
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: we've covered a whole lot different facets of it. But
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: is there anything that's still jumping around your mind that
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: you think that be horrible if we left it out
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: before shutting things down here? I don't know, man, you've
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: been pretty through on my brain that we've missed anything. Okay,
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: Well in that case, um, you know, where where can
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: folks find a couple of things? Because you're doing a
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: lot of really interesting things out there in the deer
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: hunting world. You're producing content, you're help putting out the
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: moon Guide out there in new ways. Where can people
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: find everything that you've got out there? Oh, Team two Hunter,
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: there's everything content wise that we're doing. Dot Com is
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: the website for the show, and you can catch it
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: on Waypoint TV, which is a free app runs on
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: the Pursuit channel. You know, we've got a lot of
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: great content on the show. And then as far as
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: the moon Guide goes, moon Guide dot Com we just
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: launched a new app. Um you can get it on
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: the Apple Store or Google Play search and Deer Hunter's
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: Moon Guide, um, you know, and you can get either
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: of them from from the from the website, so perfect.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: And then of course social media, the team to Enter
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: TV Facebook page and moon Guide Facebook page, so awesome. Well,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: I just got to check out the moon Gut app
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: and that's really nice having that right there on your
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: phone there easily shows the the moon rise and rise
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: and set times, the sun rise and set times. I
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: like the fact that you guys then call at the
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: peak activity times and where to focus. So for anyone
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: that's intrigued by the moon theories, if you want to
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: learn more about that, I know, Adam you've got a
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: whole lot of different videos and you talk about in
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: your your TV show, but we also dove into it
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: in a lot of detail on that previous podcast, episode two,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: and um uh it's it's very interesting intrigue and I
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: definitely follow along, and um I keep it. I keep
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: it as one of those tools that can help guide
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: me when I need to know a little bit. Just
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: like you said, all the little odds you can stack
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: in your favor and when you're trying to pick the
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: right time, I'm going to consider every factor. So it's
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: something I'm looking at and I appreciate it, so man,
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: glad to help. I think I think a lot of
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: folks are going to learn something from this today. And
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: um the only downside that is probably gonna be more
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: big deer hitting the ground, which means fewer for you
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: and me in the future. But we appreciate you sharing,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: sharing all your experience, Adam, no problem, man, I appreciate
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: you having me on the show again. All right, and uh,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: let's talk sooner than four years from now. Okay, yeah, yeah,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: let's see that sounds good. Alright, good luck hunting the
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: rest of this season too, man, Thank you, and that
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: will do it. Hopefully you guys enjoyed this one. Lots
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: of great info and ideas from Adam and Man. If
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: you're not already hunting, it is almost here, so get ready,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: get excited, and until next time, stay wired to the beat.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: And became
