- 2:15Speaker 3: Get this and get it straight. Crime is a sucker's road.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Those who travel had wind up in a gut out
- 2:20Speaker 3: the prison of the grave. This time I was in
- 2:22Speaker 3: the country where the knight should have been nothing but
- 2:24Speaker 3: peace and quiet. But a pair of angry eagles changed
- 2:27Speaker 3: all that. One was solid golden, too close to a
- 2:30Speaker 3: betted copse. The other weigh one hundred and sixty pounds
- 2:33Speaker 3: and was too quick with his fists.
- 2:35Speaker 4: It happened like this.
- 2:37Speaker 5: From the pett of Raymond tranver Outspending, author of crime fiction,
- 2:40Speaker 5: comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip
- 2:44Speaker 5: Marlowe Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We
- 2:57Speaker 5: bring you tonight's exciting story The Gray Eagles.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Hello, this is.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Philip marlow Please clover Lake, California calling.
- 3:26Speaker 4: This is marlow on your loss.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Please Hello Malo, Babe Jurney remember me light heavy contender
- 3:32Speaker 6: in thirty nine?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Oh yeah, sure, I remember you. You still at that
- 3:35Speaker 3: bar in Southgate.
- 3:36Speaker 6: No, no, I'm back in the game trainer, this time
- 3:38Speaker 6: for wellerweight.
- 3:39Speaker 4: That's good.
- 3:39Speaker 6: His name is Danny Eagley. He's another Barney Rock, believe me.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Oh kidding, Yeah, but he's in trouble.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Come on out where you feel. Clover Lake's only twenty miles.
- 3:45Speaker 6: You can be here by six, just outside of Malibu,
- 3:47Speaker 6: up on the hill.
- 3:48Speaker 4: What's your boy's trouble? Baby plenty?
- 3:50Speaker 6: And it could end up being his life. Not step
- 3:52Speaker 6: on it film. Oh and listen, you're a sports writer
- 3:55Speaker 6: from Detroit, not a private detective.
- 3:56Speaker 3: You got it, got it, leave it now, babe. It
- 4:05Speaker 3: was an hour's drive the Malibu Beach in a film
- 4:07Speaker 3: colony where the convertibles out numbered the hot tops five
- 4:10Speaker 3: to one, and another thirty minutes up into the mountains
- 4:13Speaker 3: along a steep spiral of the cat on which at
- 4:15Speaker 3: every turn made more of the Pacific below and less of.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Malibu, until finally I was at the top.
- 4:21Speaker 3: My right there was a dirt road which a freshly
- 4:23Speaker 3: painted sign said led to Clover Lake Training Camp, Private
- 4:27Speaker 3: Raleigh Lance owner. I drove on into what turned out
- 4:30Speaker 3: to be a converted summer hotel marked office, A couple
- 4:33Speaker 3: of buildings that had been stables, and maybe two dozen
- 4:36Speaker 3: cabins spread out over a sloping green acre that led
- 4:38Speaker 3: to a cliff's age in the lake some hundred feet below.
- 4:42Speaker 3: When I pulled in and parked in a gravel semi
- 4:44Speaker 3: circle which was close to a roofover boxing ring where
- 4:47Speaker 3: a lot of mussels and sweatpants was making a punching
- 4:49Speaker 3: bag sound.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Like a machine gun.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I saw a Babe Dirney coming taught me in ducks
- 4:54Speaker 3: and white T shirt with an angry fighting eagle.
- 4:56Speaker 4: As in Danny.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It was more a bay window and less hair. Yeah
- 5:00Speaker 3: the last time, but still the same quick smile under
- 5:03Speaker 3: her nose that spread over half his face and extended hands.
- 5:06Speaker 4: He could have passed for a catches made a feeling
- 5:09Speaker 4: he didn't take any longer. Things are worse, Oh, Danny
- 5:11Speaker 4: got canned and now are gone. He's burn enough. Told
- 5:14Speaker 4: Lance and his wife where they both could go, and
- 5:15Speaker 4: I think he's gonna personally see to it that they
- 5:17Speaker 4: get it. I wait a minute, Wait a minute, who's
- 5:19Speaker 4: this Lance? Oh Raley? Lance? He runs this place model
- 5:22Speaker 4: strictly the big time, big shot managers see that. The
- 5:25Speaker 4: fight says to be a one whose license plate the
- 5:27Speaker 4: lowest number you can get? Yeah, half point in French
- 5:30Speaker 4: cups and build up heels. It's got ten fighters here,
- 5:32Speaker 4: Danny's won. And the wife, Oh yeah, maira a lot
- 5:36Speaker 4: of curves, a lot of wall paint, and never enough
- 5:38Speaker 4: clothes on, know what I mean? Well, also not much
- 5:40Speaker 4: to keep her busy. And Lance hasn't got time to
- 5:42Speaker 4: run around on in Malibu, which means sheep sized the boys.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Uh yeah, Danny Eagle included not to the kid ever
- 5:47Speaker 4: did anything about it? Mind? You figured you were just
- 5:50Speaker 4: being friendly. Come on, let's move on down to the
- 5:52Speaker 4: lake like I was just showing you around, Hey, Jersey,
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yeah you can quit. Now do a mile in the shower. Okay, anyhow, Phil,
- 6:01Speaker 4: this morning, Lance and the missus head of Beef. When
- 6:03Speaker 4: the big shot got mad, Red Mira off and called
- 6:06Speaker 4: Danny and tried the same thing on him. Didn't take no,
- 6:09Speaker 4: so the boss candom The kid went back to his
- 6:11Speaker 4: cabin and started kicking the fixtures around. It's what I
- 6:14Speaker 4: called you got a lot of temper fill. Yeah, but
- 6:16Speaker 4: what do you want me to do? Help me get
- 6:18Speaker 4: him out of here? Before he tangled with Lance, he
- 6:20Speaker 4: said he wasn't gonna get off the ground still. Things
- 6:22Speaker 4: were squared away, and I'll hold it right now over
- 6:25Speaker 4: there near the edge of the cliff. Friend of Lance's
- 6:28Speaker 4: just Weatherwax. Was that old man. Yeah, he hay seed
- 6:30Speaker 4: to look at her, listen to But he owns about
- 6:32Speaker 4: every piece of land around here. Rich retired and has
- 6:35Speaker 4: just learned about prize fighters. Got some glad he Also
- 6:40Speaker 4: he's got a mud fence faced daughter. He's real anxious
- 6:43Speaker 4: to pass. Yeah. Also, he's coming this way. Yeah, don't
- 6:47Speaker 4: encourage gab.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It's a special You were well, babe, my boy, what
- 6:50Speaker 2: shape are you in tonight?
- 6:51Speaker 7: Oh?
- 6:52Speaker 4: Well, we're not quite fighting trim mister Weatherwax. I was
- 6:56Speaker 4: just showing mister Marlow here around the grounds. He's a
- 6:58Speaker 4: sports writer sports. Yeah, well, gad to make you quins.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Thank you yeah shit, I mean, I think about what
- 7:05Speaker 7: I've missed all these ye's.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Excuse me, but dude, we're in a hurry. I want
- 7:11Speaker 4: mister Marlow to see the lake before it's dark. We'll
- 7:13Speaker 4: see your dinner up the lodge later. Oh yeah, just
- 7:17Speaker 4: good bye, yeah bye original wind Bay. But Marlow, like
- 7:22Speaker 4: I was saying, I gotta have your help. What can
- 7:24Speaker 4: I do now? The kids through? Babe?
- 7:26Speaker 8: Sure?
- 7:26Speaker 4: But look, Phil, I know other managers. I also know
- 7:29Speaker 4: the makings of a champ when I see him and
- 7:31Speaker 4: Danny Eagles got the step and okay, I like him. Phil,
- 7:36Speaker 4: you got to get next to Lance. If he thinks
- 7:38Speaker 4: you're doing a feature on him, it'll be your best
- 7:39Speaker 4: friend a couple hours, a little Napoleon.
- 7:42Speaker 3: And when I'm buddy, buddy, I steer him away from
- 7:44Speaker 3: motoring his muscle land to play Pretzel with Danny while
- 7:46Speaker 3: you're trying to get him out of here.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Is that it's right? I already planted that you're coming
- 7:49Speaker 4: up here, So what you gotta Hey, look up at
- 7:53Speaker 4: the lodge on the porch there that's him and Myra
- 7:56Speaker 4: going in the office. Mike you okay, but first tell
- 7:59Speaker 4: me one thing, Baby, is an he know about me. No, no,
- 8:01Speaker 4: he turned against me. If he did. He likes to
- 8:03Speaker 4: settle this stuff his own way. That's why you got
- 8:06Speaker 4: to get to Lance. In or out of the ring.
- 8:08Speaker 4: It still takes two.
- 8:09Speaker 3: To make a fight, phil Yeah, all right, baby, I'll
- 8:12Speaker 3: do my best, eh, Philip Morlow, Detroit Daily News.
- 8:18Speaker 4: I wonder if there is such a paper. Doesn't sound
- 8:21Speaker 4: too bad, mist and Myra.
- 8:23Speaker 6: I don't what anymore?
- 8:24Speaker 7: Talk with you?
- 8:27Speaker 4: That's funny.
- 8:28Speaker 8: You drag me up here and you and drive real
- 8:32Speaker 8: hard to understand this. I dropped ten grands, ten thousand berries.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Last night and had funk Steve Rocker.
- 8:39Speaker 8: I'm not very happy.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So you want a fighter who stings.
- 8:41Speaker 9: What that got to do with me?
- 8:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:44Speaker 8: But if you'd let him alone, he wouldn't look so
- 8:46Speaker 8: tired in there.
- 8:48Speaker 2: All the cheap cracks you've ever made, that's about the
- 8:51Speaker 2: Why go on say it. You never fled it, you
- 8:55Speaker 2: never played up to You were only being friendly.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Go on, split it up.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Why don't you don't think I won't when we're all alone.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Oh excuse me, I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I was
- 9:06Speaker 3: looking for mister Lance. Raleigh Lance, that's me.
- 9:09Speaker 4: What do you want. My name is Philip Marlow, Detroit
- 9:11Speaker 4: Daily News. Mister Lance, Oh.
- 9:15Speaker 8: Oh yes, coming to mister Mandow. There's note here on
- 9:18Speaker 8: my desk. I should expect you from an interview.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Glad to see you. Oh, thank you. I don't believe I've.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Oh oh, my wife, mister Modow, missus Lance, how do
- 9:29Speaker 5: you do well from Detroit?
- 9:32Speaker 2: She said?
- 9:33Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 9:34Speaker 2: How are things at the Beaver Club? That's quite a spot, I.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Hear, Oh yeah, quite.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I used to go with a reporter there. He told
- 9:40Speaker 2: me about the wild parties at their press club. Busy
- 9:44Speaker 2: beaver Nights, they used to call him.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Yes, busy Beaver night, lots of fun.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I'll bet uh.
- 9:52Speaker 8: Marah, mister Morrow, and I'd like to talk a while,
- 9:55Speaker 8: so so I'll be running along.
- 9:58Speaker 2: It's a pleasure, mister Morrow. Thank you, good viral all else,
- 10:01Speaker 2: see you later.
- 10:02Speaker 8: Yeah, hell, mister Manda, have a cheat drink?
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah? Well thanks, quite as fun you have him, mister Lance,
- 10:12Speaker 4: make it Raleigh fella.
- 10:14Speaker 5: All right, Yeah, it's okay, But you're not up here
- 10:18Speaker 5: to write about a training.
- 10:19Speaker 8: Camp, are you? Of course? I I know background counts,
- 10:23Speaker 8: but I like this drink. The soda helps too. The
- 10:27Speaker 8: Scotch is a thing man health same.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Ah, yeah, you're right about that Scotch.
- 10:36Speaker 8: Mister what is it Kelly, I'm busy now did you
- 10:41Speaker 8: give him his walking papers?
- 10:43Speaker 4: No? Big?
- 10:43Speaker 2: Sure?
- 10:44Speaker 4: And he stopped me.
- 10:44Speaker 10: Mister Lance said he give Danny the word hisself, that
- 10:47Speaker 10: he could handle him.
- 10:48Speaker 8: That who does he think he is?
- 10:51Speaker 10: He said, he just didn't want trouble, mister Lance. Besides,
- 10:54Speaker 10: he said Danny was taking a walk. Yeah, well, I'm
- 10:57Speaker 10: going to give him the too. I've got enough on
- 11:00Speaker 10: he's without telling the louse, he trainer who's on my
- 11:01Speaker 10: own payroll of pard me, mister Milow, I'll.
- 11:04Speaker 8: Want to be a couple of minutes.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Sure, sure, help yourself another drink.
- 11:08Speaker 8: We'll talk later after dinner about eight oh and yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 8: catch best cigar made, let's.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Okay, best cigary seat smart day one.
- 11:22Speaker 9: Yeah, hey, huh, don't go away mad. My hobby always
- 11:38Speaker 9: runs out on people.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Even private detectives, slip sid busy, even knight. Indeed, I
- 11:45Speaker 2: made it up. I never even heard of Detroit.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Why did you beat the trap.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Lands? The jealous jerk is threatened to hire a detective a.
- 11:53Speaker 11: Half a dozen times. Uh, after all this fuss over
- 11:56Speaker 11: Danny Eagle, you were about due.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Well shall we walk? It's a nice night.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Let's leave it that way. Eh, what do you mean,
- 12:07Speaker 4: isn't Danny enough for one day?
- 12:09Speaker 11: Listen, mister, you're starting off with two left feet. I
- 12:11Speaker 11: was friendly with Danny Eagle period, the same, only Steve
- 12:16Speaker 11: was a little dull, a mind dedicated to comic books.
- 12:20Speaker 4: All fighter not according to his last above.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Rocco moved like he was drugged and collapsed in
- 12:26Speaker 2: a third. So it's my fault. Oh, the big shot
- 12:29Speaker 2: is quite a loser. And don't bother with your next question.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I can feel it coming. Why have I stuck?
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yeah, well it belongs here someplace.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Well, I've stuck because well, because I thought that each
- 12:41Speaker 2: battle was going to be out last It's sooner or
- 12:44Speaker 2: later he'd have time for me.
- 12:45Speaker 4: It's a busy guy.
- 12:46Speaker 11: So it was King Solomon, but he always had room
- 12:48Speaker 11: for his wife. I thought this place was going to
- 12:53Speaker 11: be our answer, just the two of us plus the
- 12:56Speaker 11: peace and cry of the country was malleble on hand.
- 12:58Speaker 2: For a change of pace. So what happens?
- 13:02Speaker 4: Still busy? Huh?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so busy.
- 13:04Speaker 11: It spends eight hours a day with Jess Witherwax the
- 13:06Speaker 11: guy never heard of until he started this camp, but
- 13:08Speaker 11: a guy who thrills to the lives and loves of
- 13:11Speaker 11: Rodiy Lamp. And that leaves me with his daughter, Clementine.
- 13:15Speaker 11: If I don't talk to the fighters. Clementine, whose shoes
- 13:19Speaker 11: are number nine with an iQue to match.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Good Night.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Admira, where are you going?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Going as far as my cabin?
- 13:27Speaker 11: And an old fashioned cry or maybe just an old
- 13:30Speaker 11: fashion I don't know which.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Good Night, ad.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Myra pivoted on a spiked heel and stopped off. Unto
- 13:41Speaker 4: the dog.
- 13:42Speaker 3: I knew that I had to move fast, because when
- 13:44Speaker 3: next she and Hubby met, the fact that I was
- 13:46Speaker 3: a private detective was going to become public domain, and
- 13:50Speaker 3: from there on out I'd be of little use to
- 13:51Speaker 3: Babe Derney, and if Lance's muscle playmates caught up to me,
- 13:54Speaker 3: of no use to anybody. I located Danny Eagle's cabin
- 13:58Speaker 3: among half a dozen others, peeking out of a thick
- 14:00Speaker 3: grove of pepper trees, showing light from a half open door.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Hey, anybody home?
- 14:21Speaker 3: Inside there was a closed valise on the edge of
- 14:23Speaker 3: the only bed, and on the dress of some money,
- 14:25Speaker 3: a package of lemon life savers in a thigh class,
- 14:28Speaker 3: a gold one with a gold angry eagle on it
- 14:30Speaker 3: that said Danny was still around.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Then he got the top for himself. I think you're
- 14:36Speaker 4: in the wrong cabins. I haven't takated yet. Well, don't
- 14:41Speaker 4: you think it easy all the way around? If you
- 14:43Speaker 4: did Danny?
- 14:43Speaker 2: Right now?
- 14:44Speaker 4: I'm not looking for the easy way, mister. I've been
- 14:47Speaker 4: walking and thinking about that. That and a pair of people.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I don't like a pair.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I want to square myself with mister and missus Rawleigh Lance. Oh.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It was purely a case of mistaken identity, but it
- 15:08Speaker 3: served as a reminder that it still took two to
- 15:10Speaker 3: make a fight. The only chance I had left was
- 15:14Speaker 3: to get next to Raleigh Lance and keep him away
- 15:15Speaker 3: from Dan Eagle. I spent a half hour going from
- 15:19Speaker 3: the lodge to Lance's empty cabin, of the dining room,
- 15:21Speaker 3: and every other place where I thought he might be. Finally,
- 15:24Speaker 3: I remember Jess Weatherwax, the one man fan Club, whom
- 15:27Speaker 3: I located back up at the office.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Hell it was peeling off his coat and getting ready
- 15:32Speaker 4: for Canasta.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Was something uncombed and built like a length of pipe.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Who had to be daughter Clementine.
- 15:38Speaker 4: What can I do? Mister Weatherwax? Have you seen Lance?
- 15:41Speaker 8: I know, missus Marlow we just came in you deals
- 15:46Speaker 8: is important?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Very Oh?
- 15:48Speaker 7: Excuse me child, mister Marlow My daughter, Clementine, how.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Do you do?
- 15:54Speaker 2: Very fine? Thank you, mister Marlow. Oh's babe Gurney.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Excuse me, Phil, come with me quick. What's wrong? Lances?
- 16:09Speaker 4: Did mar twise at the edge of the lake on
- 16:12Speaker 4: the rocks accident? I don't know. Come on, Phil, in
- 16:26Speaker 4: just a moment.
- 16:26Speaker 5: The second act of Philip Marlowe, But first, the confusion
- 16:29Speaker 5: created by Gracy Allen has never been more clearly, more
- 16:33Speaker 5: hilariously defined that it will be this Wednesday night, when
- 16:35Speaker 5: a writer for a national magazine comes to interviewer for
- 16:38Speaker 5: the writer also meets some of Gracie's friends who present
- 16:41Speaker 5: highly conflicting stories which Gracie does not untangle. It's another
- 16:45Speaker 5: merry mad mix up which could come only from George
- 16:48Speaker 5: Burns and Gracy Allen. So be listening this Wednesday on
- 16:52Speaker 5: most of these same CBS stations now with our star
- 16:56Speaker 5: Gerald Moore, the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's
- 16:59Speaker 5: story The Angry Eagle.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Shop Lake Show of stones like countless fighters. Fistsit hamm
- 17:14Speaker 3: and all alight out of rolley. Lance and as we
- 17:17Speaker 3: stared down at in the circle of light from the
- 17:18Speaker 3: electric land and Dave Jerney's hand began to dance over
- 17:21Speaker 3: the cops. I took the land and turned him away
- 17:24Speaker 3: from the twisted body at his feet, and sent a
- 17:26Speaker 3: back of the path to camp, find a phone and
- 17:28Speaker 3: quietly call the police.
- 17:31Speaker 4: After that, I took another quick look at all that
- 17:33Speaker 4: was left to the little big shot.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I went up the path myself and got as far
- 17:37Speaker 3: as the jagged hole in the rail where Lance had
- 17:39Speaker 3: gone through, just enough time to see a few things
- 17:42Speaker 3: before I was met by Myra, just like she'd been before,
- 17:47Speaker 3: except for a handful of nervous fingers that just couldn't
- 17:50Speaker 3: leave her neck line alone.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I saw a baby tell me about Raleigh. Is the truth?
- 17:54Speaker 4: It's true? All right? Your husband's dead. They've just left.
- 17:57Speaker 4: So you must have been on your way here when
- 17:58Speaker 4: you ran into him.
- 17:59Speaker 2: How come I had a date to meet my husband
- 18:04Speaker 2: for a check?
- 18:04Speaker 4: Why here? He didn't strike me as being the romatic type.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He wasn't. Neither was he the type to talk where
- 18:09Speaker 2: he could be overheard, especially when he was cornered.
- 18:12Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 18:13Speaker 2: I put Raleigh's back against the wall to night.
- 18:15Speaker 11: I finally got hold of a way to make that
- 18:16Speaker 11: inflated ego turn loose, his favorite trinket, meaning you yes.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Allow.
- 18:21Speaker 2: About an hour ago I found out that Raleigh was crooked.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Fist fight.
- 18:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 11: When I left you off, I went to our cabin
- 18:28Speaker 11: for a drink, but the liquor was all gone. Plants
- 18:31Speaker 11: kept spare bottles in the back of his closet.
- 18:33Speaker 4: So I went to look.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Fun what a briefcase? Wasn't Raleigh? So I opened it.
- 18:37Speaker 11: There was thirty five thousand dollars in it and a
- 18:40Speaker 11: note congratulating him on his coaching of Steve Rocker. Rocer
- 18:45Speaker 11: was drugged in that last fight Marlow. Raleigh sold him
- 18:47Speaker 11: out and I can prove it.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Oh that's what you two were going to hash out
- 18:51Speaker 3: over here. Huh the price of your silence, which was
- 18:54Speaker 3: divorced and no strings.
- 18:57Speaker 4: For me.
- 18:58Speaker 2: He wanted to think that he was going to give
- 18:59Speaker 2: me his answer, but out it's all unnecessary.
- 19:04Speaker 4: You're so right, I recommend I want to show you something.
- 19:10Speaker 4: See here on the ground, What do you.
- 19:14Speaker 2: No?
- 19:15Speaker 3: I don't see an somebody put up quite an argument
- 19:17Speaker 3: right here before Lance went through the railing.
- 19:20Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Yes, and here's something else.
- 19:25Speaker 2: What's that man?
- 19:26Speaker 4: The gold Tie class baby.
- 19:27Speaker 3: With an eagle life, Danny, Yeah, Danny Eagle. It's changes
- 19:33Speaker 3: things funny.
- 19:33Speaker 7: Huh, Danny.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I can't believe Danny would murder Rally.
- 19:38Speaker 3: You better start believing it and get back to your
- 19:40Speaker 3: cabin and stay there with the doors and windows locked.
- 19:43Speaker 3: You are half the beef now that he's gone this far.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Chances of good he's got something nice thought up for
- 19:48Speaker 3: you too. Unless I'm making the king size mistaken, you
- 19:52Speaker 3: and Danny.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Turn out to be a team.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Are you crazy?
- 19:54Speaker 3: It could figure both ways, baby, So I'll keep it
- 19:58Speaker 3: in mind until I get something more to do with it. Meanwhile,
- 20:01Speaker 3: like I said, take care of yourself. I dropped the
- 20:08Speaker 3: Thai Class into my pocket and started looking for its
- 20:10Speaker 3: owner who could be number one candidate for a noose.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I decided to try Danny's cabin first, But when I
- 20:15Speaker 3: got there, it was dark, with everything.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Just as I'd left it.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Until I turned to go, someone was framing the door.
- 20:24Speaker 3: It was a gentleman farmer, a Novis fight fan, Jess Weather.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Weegs having special monom.
- 20:30Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, I am I figured you would.
- 20:33Speaker 7: Be what would being a reporter because because I know
- 20:36Speaker 7: there's been some kind of a ruckus here tonight.
- 20:39Speaker 4: How did you know there was trouble here?
- 20:41Speaker 7: What I happened to be passing by a certain phone
- 20:43Speaker 7: a few minutes ago, and I heard that trainer, Babe
- 20:46Speaker 7: Journey calling the police.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Okay, as long as you know that much, you may
- 20:50Speaker 3: as well of the rest. Somebody cheved the bus of
- 20:53Speaker 3: this place.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I throw a railing into one hundred feet of thin air.
- 20:56Speaker 7: He's dead or Lance murdered by one of his own men,
- 20:59Speaker 7: or no, I don't believe he's a good Managers boys
- 21:03Speaker 7: loved him, every one of them.
- 21:04Speaker 3: You should be so loved, especially by a guy like
- 21:06Speaker 3: Danny Danny Eagle none other.
- 21:08Speaker 4: And that's only half of it. You're a good manager.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Mister Lance was a fight fixer, one who even drug
- 21:14Speaker 3: his own stable to be sure to lose. He was
- 21:15Speaker 3: as crooked as a hyenas back leg.
- 21:18Speaker 8: He rearrings boxing.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Fats, putting it mildly. His own wife, Mayra pinned that
- 21:22Speaker 3: on him just tonight. She didn't go into detail.
- 21:24Speaker 4: She didn't have to.
- 21:25Speaker 3: She had enough proof to make it stick because she
- 21:27Speaker 3: was getting a divorce on the strength of it.
- 21:28Speaker 8: Oh, I find it mighty hard to believe. All is
- 21:30Speaker 8: mister Marlowe.
- 21:31Speaker 4: There's something else. I'm not a reporter.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I'm a private detective called in by Babe Derney because
- 21:35Speaker 3: he was worried.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Now I am anyway, Here's what I'm getting at.
- 21:39Speaker 3: If you're really sincere about liking your violence, according to
- 21:41Speaker 3: Marcras of Queensbury rules, you can do.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Me a big favor. What can I do? Keep an
- 21:46Speaker 4: eye on Myra Lance for me? Uh huh. She left
- 21:48Speaker 4: her in the cottage, Dan Eagle, maybe only half finished
- 21:50Speaker 4: with what he started.
- 21:51Speaker 8: I'll do my best. You can count on that set.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:54Speaker 3: I'm going up to the office of the lodge now
- 21:55Speaker 3: and find out if anyone saw Danny leave the grounds.
- 21:57Speaker 4: I'll see it.
- 22:16Speaker 11: Oh, hello there, mister Marlowe to get enough story material
- 22:20Speaker 11: from the box fighters for a.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Couple of novels. Clementine, you alone here and now.
- 22:26Speaker 2: My daddy and I were playing Canasta, but he left
- 22:29Speaker 2: a while back, went off without his coat too.
- 22:30Speaker 3: See, I know you've been here in the office ever
- 22:33Speaker 3: since then. Why yes, why, maybe you're gonna help.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Me weirdly, but you've just got to help me. First,
- 22:40Speaker 2: mister Morrow, have you got a cigarette paper?
- 22:44Speaker 4: A cigarette paper?
- 22:45Speaker 2: You know the macers? I'm trying to roll me a cigarette?
- 22:48Speaker 9: Ran out of mind.
- 22:49Speaker 5: I found my daddy's tobacco, and then I absolutely emptied
- 22:52Speaker 5: his coat pockets here looking for a paper, but there
- 22:54Speaker 5: wasn't any.
- 22:54Speaker 4: You wouldn't have a Oh.
- 22:55Speaker 3: No, no, I'm afraid not, Clementine, Here, I have one
- 22:58Speaker 3: of mine, I in fact have two. Now my question,
- 23:01Speaker 3: how did you happen to see Danny Eagle go out go.
- 23:04Speaker 4: On out to what?
- 23:06Speaker 2: Mister Marlow?
- 23:07Speaker 3: Huh oh, never mind, listen, Clementine. Did this thing come
- 23:11Speaker 3: out of your daddy's coat pocket too?
- 23:12Speaker 2: That old ticket stuck?
- 23:14Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 23:15Speaker 2: How did that little pocket and the big one on
- 23:17Speaker 2: the right side? It was, mister Morrow, what's wrong?
- 23:21Speaker 3: I don't know, but I better find out right now.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Because I ran out of the office and passed the
- 23:31Speaker 3: ampty rope ring and told.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Where the cabin stood.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I was full of the conviction that clover Lake Training
- 23:36Speaker 3: Camp was due for a second copse any minute.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Only this time I knew that some fast adjectives I
- 23:40Speaker 4: myself had tossed off and not a hot headed fighter.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Were playing cause and effect. As I made for the
- 23:45Speaker 3: door of the Lance cabin. There was no help in
- 23:47Speaker 3: the fact that my volunteered god, Jess Weatherwax, was nowhere
- 23:50Speaker 3: in sight.
- 23:51Speaker 4: I called Myra's names twice and still got no answer.
- 23:54Speaker 3: So I stepped back to go to work on the
- 23:55Speaker 3: door with my shoulder and the lock turned from inside.
- 24:00Speaker 2: What is it, Mala?
- 24:02Speaker 4: What are you doing here at the moment? Myra, Baby?
- 24:06Speaker 3: I'm counting lucky stars that kind of kept you hail
- 24:08Speaker 3: and haughty in spite of me in my big.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Mouth, I'm I'm afraid that I don't know what you mean.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I mean I almost spilled all, including the clincher, which
- 24:18Speaker 3: was where you could be located. All this minds you
- 24:20Speaker 3: to the guy who know that was in it, Woul Lance.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Right up there was Adam's apple. The fact that you're
- 24:24Speaker 3: still breathing means that he must have given up and.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Beat it because of that top or I sent him
- 24:28Speaker 4: here to God. You say, what's the matter. Aren't you
- 24:31Speaker 4: even curious?
- 24:33Speaker 2: Why? Yes, sure, of course, don't move.
- 24:38Speaker 7: Oh no, you have a talent for stupid audacity. And
- 24:43Speaker 7: man Meyer's still breathing because up to the point where
- 24:46Speaker 7: you knocked on this door. She still didn't realize my connection.
- 24:49Speaker 7: But when you shut up, I couldn't take a chance.
- 24:51Speaker 7: I was forced to bring this gun into things and
- 24:54Speaker 7: wait behind the door. Obviously you both know, and I was.
- 24:58Speaker 4: So relieved you still that frank enough to open the door. Myra.
- 25:01Speaker 4: I stepped in shin first, and was happy about it.
- 25:04Speaker 4: I was afraid to warn you I'll let you all
- 25:07Speaker 4: move with a wax. Well, let it be.
- 25:09Speaker 8: I have no choice.
- 25:11Speaker 4: You have a lot of bodies to crawl out from
- 25:12Speaker 4: underbusting that.
- 25:13Speaker 8: Would be too hard.
- 25:14Speaker 7: Dan's already framed for Ralli, his madam, framed by home
- 25:18Speaker 7: by Rowley Lands himself. Such a simple little plan.
- 25:22Speaker 8: I worked at that as I worked out everything else
- 25:24Speaker 8: around here.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Just for the record, how is it supposed to go?
- 25:28Speaker 7: Once myyer knew about Rawley, she became dangerous to me.
- 25:31Speaker 7: She had to be killed, So I told him how
- 25:33Speaker 7: to set up the whole thing. You know, you're really
- 25:36Speaker 7: enjoying yourself, aren't you, Frankly No, or I just don't
- 25:40Speaker 7: intend to take the wrap for my late partner's stupid clumsiness.
- 25:44Speaker 8: Oh but this has gone fine enough.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Hey, he's got.
- 25:54Speaker 8: And I still got a good right hand. My boy, Hey,
- 26:00Speaker 8: stop it.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Off, Hey, we're there, high off, hiy off, I tell you,
- 26:05Speaker 4: my on, he's got to tell us the rest. Come
- 26:09Speaker 4: on with a wax talk. What actually happened on the
- 26:11Speaker 4: path of the.
- 26:12Speaker 7: Lake wowls set up frame on dani Is. I told
- 26:18Speaker 7: him to her by planning that eagle tig class at
- 26:21Speaker 7: the weak spot in the rear, and then he made
- 26:24Speaker 7: a lot of marks.
- 26:25Speaker 4: In the path like there had been a fighter go ahead.
- 26:28Speaker 7: And after that he went over to kick the rear loose.
- 26:30Speaker 7: He tripped and he fell because of those shoes of his,
- 26:34Speaker 7: with the hard, slick souls and build up heels.
- 26:39Speaker 8: Silly little man.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Well, it wasn't long until the boys from the Sheriff's
- 26:55Speaker 3: office arrived with a good doctor, a lot of open notebooks,
- 26:59Speaker 3: and an endless supply of questions.
- 27:03Speaker 4: But finally all the pieces were fitted together.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Very surprised, Danny Eagle, who had done a lot of thinking,
- 27:11Speaker 3: was back from a second long walk, and the whole
- 27:14Speaker 3: thing had boiled down to me alone at the bedside
- 27:17Speaker 3: of a heavy jawed trainer. What a happy look on
- 27:20Speaker 3: his ugly posts for the first time that night, My.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Boy's going to be champ now Marlow. Thanks to you, Oh,
- 27:26Speaker 4: thanks to you, babe. We were almost down for the
- 27:29Speaker 4: count when you showed up. Hey, how's the shoulder that? Hey? Look,
- 27:34Speaker 4: tell me something. How'd you back old Weatherwacks into that corner? Oh? Well?
- 27:39Speaker 3: I found a ticket stuff from his coat pocket with
- 27:42Speaker 3: a number A two on it. Weatherwick's claimed that he'd
- 27:44Speaker 3: never seen a fight or met Lance until the camp
- 27:47Speaker 3: opened up here, but that stub proved that just a
- 27:50Speaker 3: month ago he sat right beside Lance.
- 27:53Speaker 4: That's right, Dan's always head. She wanted the arena checked.
- 27:58Speaker 4: In short, Weatherax was a liar who dropped his god,
- 28:02Speaker 4: and in this rect you do that just once and
- 28:05Speaker 4: you're out. He see that the eagle keeps his God up,
- 28:09Speaker 4: will you, babe? I'm gonna be betting on him from
- 28:12Speaker 4: now on. I don't give it another thought. Good night, Phil,
- 28:17Speaker 4: And I didn't give it another thought. Neither did I
- 28:21Speaker 4: think about an arrogant little guy who was phony heels
- 28:25Speaker 4: and twisted.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Mind that dumped him into his own trap, or about
- 28:29Speaker 3: a fat gambler who traded in perverted victories and rotten,
- 28:33Speaker 3: hopeless defeats. Instead, I thought about the sun coming up
- 28:38Speaker 3: over the hills and a nice big platter with a
- 28:42Speaker 3: ham on with on him, and then a good solid eight.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Hours sleep, nothing else. You know, sometimes I think I
- 28:54Speaker 4: have no soul.
