- 1:18Tim Thomas: Tom, thanks for having me.
- 1:20Tim Thomas: Thanks for that very generous intro
- 1:22Tom Jackobs: I, I think we're gonna have a really interesting conversation today, because, love breathwork in our community, but I think there isn't-- there's a disconnect between doing breathwork as a business as well.
- 1:35Tom Jackobs: So bringing that all together.
- 1:36Tom Jackobs: So I'm really excited to share your expertise with the audience.
- 1:40Tom Jackobs: But first, I always like to ask, what's your definition of a heart-led business?
- 1:46Tim Thomas: For me, Tom, a heart-led business is when the thing you sell is connected to something you, you genuinely care about healing in the world.
- 1:54Tim Thomas: So there's something in you that you see in the world.
- 1:58Tim Thomas: it doesn't mean, you don't charge properly.
- 1:59Tim Thomas: It doesn't mean you become a martyr.
- 2:01Tim Thomas: It just means that the business has a pulse, and there's a human being on the other side of the transaction.
- 2:07Tim Thomas: not just a customer, subscriber, client, or a lead.
- 2:09Tim Thomas: it's, for me, it's another version of me
- 2:13Tom Jackobs: So how do you balance then, and we're diving right into the business side.
- 2:17Tom Jackobs: But, actually, why don't we-- Before we do that, why don't you tell us a little bit about your business and how you started it as well?
- 2:25Tom Jackobs: 'Cause I think that's a fascinating journey.
- 2:28Tim Thomas: Sure.
- 2:28Tim Thomas: Well, breathwork in bed is the business.
- 2:31Tim Thomas: And when I was going through my own healing journey, I discovered that not all healers are born equal.
- 2:38Tim Thomas: And I'm talking about doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, shamans.
- 2:41Tim Thomas: And I thought when-- if I ever get into a position where I can help someone else, it has to pass these three Ps, okay?
- 2:52Tim Thomas: I call it my P test for jokes.
- 2:55Tim Thomas: Um, it's gotta be powerful and it's gotta be positive.
- 2:59Tim Thomas: But the third P is most important.
- 3:01Tim Thomas: The third P determines whether it's a heart-led business or not.
- 3:05Tim Thomas: Third P is permanency,'cause if we say we care about people, we can't just care about them when we're in the room taking their dollars, we gotta care about them the next week, the next year, the next decade.
- 3:15Tim Thomas: And I thought if I ever get into a position, I want to be powerful, positive and permanent.
- 3:20Tim Thomas: And so breathwork was discovered when I was going through the war zone of Afghanistan.
- 3:26Tim Thomas: It helped me sleep then, right?
- 3:28Tim Thomas: I didn't know what it was, but it was helping me sleep.
- 3:29Tim Thomas: I'd go to bed with 2 cents and I'd wake up with$2.
- 3:33Tim Thomas: And then it got me through the war zone of my own divorce.
- 3:37Tim Thomas: And I started to see just how, A, powerful, B, accessible this thing is.
- 3:43Tim Thomas: And I do believe if you come across something that actually works, and I'm talking actually works,'cause there's, there's so many things that people think should work but don't.
- 3:55Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 3:55Tim Thomas: Honestly, some of the it's a very dangerous statement to say,"I want to help people," if underneath that statement there's an idea in your head that says,"I think this will work," and then you push it into the world.
- 4:10Tim Thomas: And the problem with your heart is it's super powerful and it can have you going, when everything else says stop.
- 4:18Tim Thomas: So I always took data points whenever I did a program.
- 4:24Tim Thomas: And the metric of success, a very measurable metric, was how much sleep improved.
- 4:28Tim Thomas: And we noticed if we improved sleep, everything else improved.
- 4:31Tim Thomas: And so I'm like,"Well, why don't I make it all about sleep?
- 4:33Tim Thomas: What's the easiest way to get people to sleep?
- 4:36Tim Thomas: Breath.
- 4:37Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 4:37Tim Thomas: Everyone's got a set of lungs." And so I started running these programs.
- 4:41Tim Thomas: I ran one on an army base and I got an email the next day from a lieutenant colonel saying,"My soldiers got the first good night's sleep in three years, four years, up to five years."
- 4:53Tom Jackobs: Wow
- 4:55Tim Thomas: And I'm like,"Well, why didn't you get me out there five years ago?
- 4:58Tim Thomas: How easy was that?"
- 4:59Tom Jackobs: Right
- 5:00Tim Thomas: What he said next had me withdraw from public life for two years,'cause I realized I was failing my own P test.
- 5:05Tim Thomas: He said,"It was good when you're there.
- 5:07Tim Thomas: What have you got when you're not there?" And I'm like,"I've failed.
- 5:12Tim Thomas: I'm not permanent.
- 5:12Tim Thomas: I'm powerful and positive, but I'm not permanent." And if anyone's asking, how do I become permanent?
- 5:20Tim Thomas: For me, I got there by realizing, I'm just human.
- 5:24Tim Thomas: My energy's not enough for two people.
- 5:26Tim Thomas: and I'm quite against that sort of celebrity sell.
- 5:30Tim Thomas: you've seen me a thousand times, you trust me, so buy this product.
- 5:33Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 5:34Tim Thomas: Ultimately...
- 5:35Tim Thomas: and there's nothing wrong with getting dollars from people, provided there's an exchange.
- 5:41Tim Thomas: And on my road to permanency, I saw that I'm human, don't have enough energy for two, but what I have is a connection to something super powerful.
- 5:52Tim Thomas: A bit like a solar panel that lined up to the sun, and it might have taken me 10 years to get that really powerful alignment, but working with someone else, I can get them to have that alignment in far less time.
- 6:04Tim Thomas: I'm not the sun, but I'm the one lining you up to it.
- 6:06Tim Thomas: Does that make sense?
- 6:07Tom Jackobs: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:09Tom Jackobs: Yeah, the mechanism and then they have to fulfill the actual work that they do.
- 6:13Tim Thomas: Yeah.
- 6:14Tim Thomas: And so I thought, I've gotta make it, I've gotta make what I provide as, as easily accessible as all the crap that's out there.
- 6:23Tom Jackobs: Yeah
- 6:24Tim Thomas: so the problem is, crap is out there, but it's super fast.
- 6:27Tim Thomas: I'm hungry, I'll have fast food.
- 6:30Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 6:30Tim Thomas: I thought, I've gotta, I've gotta deliver this at the speed at which, or the convenience at which, all the bad stuff's available.
- 6:37Tim Thomas: And I thought, well, how do I create the Uber Eats of breathwork?
- 6:40Tim Thomas: How do I just press a button and it just gets delivered, past their door?
- 6:44Tim Thomas: And I'm like, let's deliver it into their bed, breathwork in bed.
- 6:47Tim Thomas: and so I made the app with the end user in mind that would fulfill on powerful and positive stuff that has permanent access.
- 6:56Tim Thomas: so with breathwork in bed, you just tell it when you want to sleep, when you want to wake up, and then we take care of the rest.
- 7:02Tim Thomas: it just falls out of your phone like Uber Eats.
- 7:03Tim Thomas: You sort of tap it, going to sleep.
- 7:06Tim Thomas: Um, because honestly, you can listen to this podcast and go,"Yeah, breathing's good," and you might, do a bit of breathing, but it's the stuff we do regularly that makes the biggest difference.
- 7:17Tim Thomas: and I can't do what you do, Tom, but if I can help regularly improve your sleep, then you're bringing your gifts into the world even better.
- 7:26Tim Thomas: I hope I didn't do too much of a loop to get to the point of what I'm trying to say.
- 7:30Tom Jackobs: No, yeah, no, that, that totally makes sense.
- 7:31Tom Jackobs: and it exponentially your, your reach gets even bigger because you're working through your clients and helping them be more, more productive and better at the- at what they do.
- 7:44Tom Jackobs: And if they're healers as well, like that's...
- 7:46Tom Jackobs: you're just gonna heal a lot more people.
- 7:48Tom Jackobs: So that, that's a beautiful mission.
- 7:50Tom Jackobs: How did you transition though from kind of military life into having your own business, and what was that transition like for you?
- 8:00Tim Thomas: Good question.
- 8:01Tim Thomas: I shouldn't say it's wrong because I do think good things can come out of bad experiences.
- 8:06Tim Thomas: So are those bad experiences bad if good things came from them, right?
- 8:09Tim Thomas: Um, but I will say this.
- 8:11Tim Thomas: When I went through my own healing journey and I figured out how to make myself better, and then I shared it with my small circle and it seemed to work, and the more people I shared it with, the more it worked with, I'm like,"Wow, I wanna, help others." Dangerous statement.
- 8:29Tom Jackobs: Right?
- 8:30Tim Thomas: And it was working.
- 8:31Tim Thomas: I was doing good things, but because the heart is so strong, it writes the check for$1,000 even if you've only got 10 in the account.
- 8:38Tim Thomas: I was doing generosity wrong, right?
- 8:42Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 8:43Tim Thomas: I was giving of myself, I wasn't giving of my abundance.
- 8:47Tim Thomas: and I'll just break this down what that looks like.
- 8:49Tim Thomas: so if I'm just adequate, if I'm just at 100%, right?
- 8:52Tim Thomas: And there's someone I wanna help, benefit, I give them 10%.
- 8:58Tim Thomas: There was a part of me that was saying, I've given you 10%, I'm down to 90%, you better do something with that." And I'd have, I'd have an attachment.
- 9:06Tim Thomas: I'd have a...
- 9:06Tim Thomas: In my mind, there should be some form of exchange, even though it was an act of generosity, right?
- 9:12Tim Thomas: Even though I was still getting good results.
- 9:15Tim Thomas: I was achieving lifetime goals within 12 months at that stage.
- 9:18Tim Thomas: so just so you know, my lifetime goal was to save 40 veteran lives from suicide, okay?
- 9:24Tim Thomas: 'Cause that's how many lives we've lost in Australia to bombs and bullets, but we've lost 20, 30, 40 times that amount to suicide.
- 9:31Tim Thomas: Not very common fact, but it's, it's something that's in the space.
- 9:35Tim Thomas: And I thought,"I'm gonna die happy if I achieve 40 veteran lives.
- 9:40Tim Thomas: I don't care if it takes the rest of my life." That was achieved within 12 months.
- 9:46Tim Thomas: And that told me, okay, there's outcomes here that are working.
- 9:50Tim Thomas: But what I didn't see was that because I was so heart involved in this, I wasn't looking after myself, and I would...
- 10:02Tim Thomas: You know, it would feel good to help others and get, see all these results, but I would go from 90% to 80% to 70%.
- 10:10Tim Thomas: And every six or seven weeks on the knocker, I would get drunk for about three days.
- 10:15Tom Jackobs: Oh, wow.
- 10:15Tim Thomas: Yeah.
- 10:16Tim Thomas: I would write myself off drunk for three days because I was giving of myself, I wasn't giving of my abundance.
- 10:22Tim Thomas: And so generosity is good, it's powerful, it gives you an incredible biohack, but it can be done wrong.
- 10:28Tim Thomas: So I was doing it wrong.
- 10:29Tim Thomas: That was not sustainable, right?
- 10:31Tim Thomas: Even though I was getting the results, it was like I was not embodying the thing I was wanting for other people.
- 10:38Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 10:38Tom Jackobs: It was like you're being squeezed out of...
- 10:42Tom Jackobs: Because of what you're giving, giving, giving, it was taking so much out of you.
- 10:46Tom Jackobs: And then your recharge sounds like a nice three-day bender, right?
- 10:51Tim Thomas: Yeah.
- 10:52Tim Thomas: Yeah.
- 10:52Tim Thomas: And I'm a pretty tough dude.
- 10:55Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 10:55Tim Thomas: I know how to, breathe and recover, but there was a part of me that I was ignoring.
- 11:00Tim Thomas: So these days, what I say is I don't give of myself anymore, I give of my abundance.
- 11:07Tim Thomas: so what I work off and what I encourage people to do is understand clothes do not maketh the man.
- 11:14Tom Jackobs: Mm-hmm.
- 11:15Tim Thomas: Mornings maketh the man.
- 11:17Tim Thomas: You show me a man's morning routine, I'll show you the man.
- 11:20Tim Thomas: And so my morning routine is there to invest in me, put me at 500%, and each day I can give away 20% and have no attachment.
- 11:34Tim Thomas: People can love it, hate it doesn't matter.
- 11:36Tim Thomas: I'm attached to something so much more powerful.
- 11:39Tim Thomas: And what does that look like in real life?
- 11:43Tim Thomas: Consider your energy is like money.
- 11:45Tim Thomas: How you invest, it's how you get it back.
- 11:48Tim Thomas: You have a unique energy signature.
- 11:50Tim Thomas: You have a thing that you invest into.
- 11:52Tim Thomas: It might cost you$2, but you'll get$2,000 back.
- 11:57Tim Thomas: It could be yoga, it could be boxing, it could be breathing, it could be whatever that is.
- 12:06Tim Thomas: My goal for all my clients is to be energetic millionaires,'cause life occurs very differently walking down the street with a million dollars.
- 12:14Tom Jackobs: Mm-hmm.
- 12:14Tim Thomas: And if you've only got 2 cents.
- 12:16Tim Thomas: 'Cause when I...
- 12:16Tim Thomas: I've been that guy with only 20 cents.
- 12:19Tim Thomas: I've been guarded, scanning for threat, who's gonna take what I have?
- 12:23Tim Thomas: And if someone takes 10 cents, I'm like,"Oh my gosh, that's a massive withdrawal.
- 12:27Tim Thomas: I'm gonna revenge that stuff." And I've spent years trying to get it back, completely forgetting I could be a millionaire the next day.
- 12:34Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 12:35Tim Thomas: So this is where, you know, unforgiveness is just you drinking poison thinking you're gonna hurt someone else.
- 12:40Tim Thomas: And I'm just sharing here the way I did generosity wrong to now the idea of being an energetic millionaire and having that abundance to invest in whatever you want, but also in, in people.
- 12:56Tim Thomas: You know?
- 12:56Tim Thomas: People are a very volatile stock to invest into.
- 13:01Tim Thomas: Um, and the advantage I had working in the veteran space, these guys were extra volatile.
- 13:11Tim Thomas: Like, if there was something that, that didn't work, they would tell you to politely hit the highway in no uncertain terms.
- 13:20Tim Thomas: Um, so it was in that space and also going through my own sort of war zones in my head that I discovered something that just kept working.
- 13:30Tim Thomas: And then I thought,"Okay, I've got something that works.
- 13:32Tim Thomas: How do I create permanent access?
- 13:34Tim Thomas: And how do I do it as easy as everyone else is doing it?" And as much as I don't like phones, everyone's got one, and everyone's got a set of lungs.
- 13:42Tim Thomas: And I'd like to think the high-tech part of what I do isn't, breathwork in bed.
- 13:45Tim Thomas: That's just a, an app on your phone.
- 13:48Tim Thomas: What it gets you in touch with is this high-tech part of your own body, this medicine cabinet that's underneath our lungs.
- 13:57Tom Jackobs: That everybody has, but, and it's automatic for the most part.
- 14:01Tom Jackobs: So I'm sure a lot of people are like,"Breathwork, that's interesting." Like, how can you make a business out of something that people do naturally?
- 14:10Tom Jackobs: But obviously we don't do it the right way or in a therapeutic way to then help us with recovery and sleep and all that.
- 14:20Tom Jackobs: You know, going back to that inception moment where you had the idea to have a business.
- 14:28Tom Jackobs: what was that, that transition like into, actually starting the business?
- 14:34Tim Thomas: Honestly, I didn't know what to do.
- 14:36Tim Thomas: I just knew it had to be done.
- 14:38Tim Thomas: I couldn't be the one bearing all the weight.
- 14:41Tim Thomas: I needed other people in there.
- 14:43Tim Thomas: 'cause I noticed if you care deeply about something, you can accidentally make yourself the least important thing in the business.
- 14:50Tim Thomas: Um, you know, you give away too much, you undercharge, you over-serve.
- 14:54Tim Thomas: Um, you, you like it.
- 14:55Tim Thomas: I called it generosity, but it was just fear, guilt, and maybe some old identity.
- 15:00Tim Thomas: and I had to learn that charging people the right amount is not a betrayal of the mission you're on.
- 15:06Tim Thomas: it's the thing that keeps the mission alive.
- 15:08Tim Thomas: The only way to have a future in business is have a financial future.
- 15:12Tim Thomas: and I needed people to have eyes on that.
- 15:14Tim Thomas: So I was fortunate enough to have a guy that was quite good at business.
- 15:18Tim Thomas: He'd known me for some time And he just said this throwaway line.
- 15:22Tim Thomas: I'm like,"What did you say?" He says,"No, I haven't slept." I'm like,"How long have you not slept for?" he said,"Oh, it's insomnia, Tim.
- 15:28Tim Thomas: I, it's over 30 years." I'm like...
- 15:31Tim Thomas: His name's Chris.
- 15:31Tim Thomas: I said,"Chris, how long have you known me?
- 15:33Tim Thomas: you know what I do." And I said,"Look, okay, Chris." I prescribed him some breathwork.
- 15:40Tim Thomas: I said...
- 15:41Tim Thomas: And he says,"Oh, I don't want, I'm..." He said,"I'm not sure my, my wife will like that doing in bed." I said,"Do this on your couch and then go to bed." And so he took that and I said,"Look, I'm gonna check back in eight days." And this guy hadn't slept in over 30 years, and he thought it was normal.
- 15:56Tim Thomas: Eight days later, he checks in, he says,"Tim, the only time I didn't sleep all the way through was when the dog was barking.
- 16:04Tom Jackobs: Wow
- 16:05Tim Thomas: And that was a natural thing he did with an immediate powerful impact.
- 16:12Tim Thomas: And if that guy was like me and went to a doctor and said,"Hey, I can't sleep," the amount of pharmaceuticals that they throw at you
- 16:20Tom Jackobs: Yep
- 16:21Tim Thomas: is incredible, right?
- 16:23Tim Thomas: And this guy, it was an immediate, immediate that night.
- 16:30Tim Thomas: and so I was a bit frustrated with some of Chris,"Why didn't you approach me about this earlier?" But he just, like a lot of people, like our culture, we tend to think poor sleep is just accepted.
- 16:39Tim Thomas: I almost think it's designed that way because as long as we're in a state of fatigue, our higher thinking doesn't kick in.
- 16:46Tim Thomas: We have all these resources in our head.
- 16:49Tim Thomas: We've got like a 1,000-person workforce, but when we're fatigued, it goes down to one, and it's called the amygdala.
- 16:55Tim Thomas: Inside our brain, when I'm working with veterans and they're in fight or flight, their amygdala is triggered.
- 17:01Tim Thomas: Now, amygdala, you don't have to be a veteran to trigger it, but if your always scanning for threats and you can't sleep at night because you've got thoughts rattling around in your head, that's your amygdala firing.
- 17:12Tim Thomas: That's a thing that searches for threat.
- 17:14Tim Thomas: And it will see threat when even if there's no threat there.
- 17:16Tim Thomas: It's like it's trying to justify itself.
- 17:18Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 17:19Tim Thomas: you cannot outthink this thing because it's your thoughts.
- 17:23Tim Thomas: But what you can do is outrank it.
- 17:24Tim Thomas: You can outrank it with your breathing.
- 17:26Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 17:27Tim Thomas: And this is where, when I was prescribed, pills to shut down my amygdala, the pills worked, but my amygdala treated it as a threat and it almost became stronger.
- 17:36Tim Thomas: And so I had to take more and more pills to overcome this amygdala.
- 17:39Tim Thomas: But when I breathe, what happened inside my brain, you go into your prefrontal cortex, which is like 1,000 people working again.
- 17:46Tim Thomas: Life is easier because you got all of you online.
- 17:50Tim Thomas: And so this is where, people are always trying to do more, like it's gonna solve a problem.
- 17:55Tim Thomas: There's a problem, I've got to do more.
- 17:58Tim Thomas: My advice is do less, find out if you're in your amygdala, find out if you're spending more energy scanning for threats, and bring your prefrontal cortex online.
- 18:12Tim Thomas: And you can do that with simple breathing and banking good night's sleep each night.
- 18:16Tim Thomas: and I, and I know that sounds like understating it, but this is where you have to understand this information you'd usually only hear when authentic conversations take place.
- 18:26Tim Thomas: Because if you know this, all that they're trying to sell you becomes redundant real quick.
- 18:33Tim Thomas: So if you're listening right now, and I really hope you are, don't go through life not knowing what your own body can do for you.
- 18:41Tim Thomas: Because a lot of money gets made from the ignorance of our own bodies
- 18:47Tom Jackobs: So interesting that we do have that power within us to heal, and our bodies are very amazing, yet medicine is let's just put a Band-Aid on it and then see if that works, right?
- 18:59Tim Thomas: And bless them, they're trying to do the right thing, but they're trying to deal with a problem that's way downstream from an upstream problem.
- 19:08Tim Thomas: and people can lose years trying to put out these fires downstream of something that's way up it.
- 19:13Tim Thomas: And if you can get up there and you can access that, then you're in the top percentile of people.
- 19:19Tim Thomas: And if you can do it in a way that's natural and immediate, then great.
- 19:22Tim Thomas: But to...
- 19:23Tim Thomas: I, I got sidetracked there, but Chris ended up becoming my business partner.
- 19:28Tom Jackobs: That's amazing.
- 19:29Tim Thomas: so he can shoulder the framing, the planning, the paperwork.
- 19:33Tim Thomas: and on a personal note, Chris is now training to be the world's fastest 60-year-old triathlete.
- 19:39Tom Jackobs: Oh, wow.
- 19:40Tim Thomas: Yeah.
- 19:41Tom Jackobs: That's incredible yeah.
- 19:43Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 19:44Tom Jackobs: So, you know, going back to Chris on as a partner in the business, how did that free you up or create the business, a solid business?
- 19:54Tom Jackobs: instead of just trying to, do it yourself, like all the Instagram influencers tell you,"Oh, you can just do it yourself, grind through it, and do it." How did bringing on a partner change that for you?
- 20:05Tim Thomas: It helped me relax.
- 20:07Tim Thomas: It helped me stick to what I'm strong to, but also learn what I needed to in the areas I wasn't familiar with.
- 20:17Tim Thomas: Because what I found is there's so many people out there willing to exploit your ignorance.
- 20:21Tom Jackobs: Mm-hmm.
- 20:22Tim Thomas: So many.
- 20:24Tim Thomas: And without giving them a bad rap, marketers, most of them are only good at marketing themselves.
- 20:32Tim Thomas: They know how to promise the world.
- 20:35Tim Thomas: But it's, if you challenge them on,"Okay, let's see some sales as a report of all your, views," they'll run the other direction or give you some flowery answer.
- 20:44Tim Thomas: so I've learnt the hard way not-- If you're gonna give away a job, learn how to do it a little bit yourself, even if it's just a little bit.
- 20:55Tim Thomas: Because there's something that goes off behind the other person's head,"Oh, this person knows nothing.
- 20:59Tim Thomas: Advantage mine." And they might be nice people, but there's something that goes off in their head when they see that you have no idea about what they're doing.
- 21:08Tim Thomas: The same goes when it comes to parts of your business that if you're gonna outsource, work off a small idea of it yourself.
- 21:19Tim Thomas: You don't have to learn all, learn enough to let that other person know.
- 21:22Tim Thomas: And you know what?
- 21:22Tim Thomas: ChatGPT is really good for that.
- 21:24Tim Thomas: You know?
- 21:25Tim Thomas: I can, I can have him in my corner and ask the right questions.
- 21:28Tim Thomas: "Okay, my tech people ask me this question.
- 21:31Tim Thomas: What should I be looking at?" And then that email back goes,"Hey, have you checked the flux capacitor?" and they're like,"Oh, okay.
- 21:37Tim Thomas: This guy knows what he's talking about." So I'm just saying partners are good, but be careful not to divide up your power, and you can end up paying a lot of money and not getting a lot of return with the wrong ones.
- 21:50Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 21:50Tom Jackobs: I call that, trust and verify.
- 21:52Tom Jackobs: So trust that, the people that you bring into the business, whether they be partners or vendors or employees, you trust that they're gonna do the right thing, but you're gonna verify that it actually did happen.
- 22:05Tim Thomas: And, you know, Tom, on a personal note, I, if you look at the personality archetypes, king, warrior, magician, lover, I'm natural sort of warrior energy and that's, and my discipline, working under pressure, proving, pushing, surviving, that really helped me get things moving.
- 22:24Tim Thomas: but a heart-led business I've had to, I've had to go to the other side, of my personality in the way that getting things done, moving forward, discipline under pressure, that's good from going to A to B.
- 22:41Tim Thomas: But if you don't engage in a deeper heartfelt connection, if you don't engage on the lover side of things, and lovers are all about connection.
- 22:50Tim Thomas: Oh, they could spend all day in a hug, right?
- 22:53Tim Thomas: now I don't need to spend all day in a hug, but what I what I need to take from that is the maturity of being with people and not just charging forward to get from A to B because as soon as you get to B, another B.
- 23:09Tom Jackobs: Then what?
- 23:10Tim Thomas: Will occur, you know?
- 23:11Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 23:12Tim Thomas: And I mentioned this earlier, to actually embody what you're trying to communicate, because words only go so far, right?
- 23:20Tim Thomas: I believe, if someone looked at Tom, they couldn't see everything that Tom is.
- 23:24Tim Thomas: There's a lot of Tom that most people don't see.
- 23:27Tim Thomas: It's invisible, but it shows up in your actions and your movements and all that sort of stuff, the conversations you have.
- 23:32Tim Thomas: And so this is where people say, 90% of communication is non-verbal.
- 23:37Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 23:38Tim Thomas: If you wanna be effective in your heart-led business, you need to have it in your nervous system in a balanced way that is, that has a, a bottom line, a success that is measured in a couple of different ways.
- 23:54Tim Thomas: and understand that when you're genuinely embodying your authentic self, there's a certain authority there as well.
- 24:07Tim Thomas: You know, and you don't have to work harder, it just is, and people pick up on that.
- 24:11Tim Thomas: And in fact, it's, it's very rare.
- 24:13Tim Thomas: It's very rare.
- 24:15Tim Thomas: You know?
- 24:16Tim Thomas: But the mistake I made is, oh, I feel like there's friends here, and you don't charge your friends money.
- 24:22Tim Thomas: You know?
- 24:23Tim Thomas: It's like when the heart comes on, the dollars, well, dollars aren't important.
- 24:26Tim Thomas: let's go to another form of emotional currency, right?
- 24:29Tim Thomas: You do need to just embody your message, but also have a clean line between,"Hey, everyone's friends here," to, you know,"Everyone wants me around tomorrow.
- 24:43Tim Thomas: Do you want me around tomorrow?" You know?
- 24:46Tim Thomas: I've usually found that also if people...
- 24:52Tim Thomas: there's a really good saying,"Keep people paying until they pay attention."
- 24:56Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 24:57Tim Thomas: Cause they don't pay attention if it's cheap or free.
- 25:00Tim Thomas: You know.
- 25:01Tim Thomas: You can let them try it for free, but there comes a time when they can go,"Well, this is actually worth something to me." You get...
- 25:07Tim Thomas: Essentially, if you get something for nothing, you treat it like it's nothing.
- 25:11Tom Jackobs: Well, yeah, absolutely.
- 25:12Tom Jackobs: Yeah, I've always, when, when I first started my fitness business, I gave lots away for free.
- 25:18Tom Jackobs: And the results were, the same.
- 25:20Tom Jackobs: Like if somebody was doing something for free, they weren't fully invested, and so they weren't getting the results.
- 25:24Tom Jackobs: And then they're like,"Well, this sucks.
- 25:26Tom Jackobs: I don't want to do this anymore." And they weren't even paying for it.
- 25:29Tom Jackobs: So, it's a, it's a catch-22 sometimes.
- 25:32Tom Jackobs: But, uh, I think for heart-led business owners, having that balance between, giving away, but also taking care of ourselves.
- 25:41Tom Jackobs: Because I think you said early on, you you were giving out so much of yourself that your self-care was, three days with a bottle, which is not always a, a great thing to do.
- 25:54Tim Thomas: Well, the thing is, we are so strong.
- 25:56Tim Thomas: Our physical bodies can take so much abuse
- 25:58Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 25:59Tim Thomas: That we can have dumb stuff in our head and still make stuff work.
- 26:03Tim Thomas: And this is what I believe, aging scares people.
- 26:07Tim Thomas: It's not the years that roll on, it's our dumb getting to critical mass and we can't ignore it anymore.
- 26:12Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 26:13Tom Jackobs: So true.
- 26:14Tom Jackobs: Like, as I get older, that's kind of my, my attitude is like,"Yeah, that's fine if you have that belief.
- 26:20Tom Jackobs: Cool." Awesome.
- 26:22Tom Jackobs: Well, how do, people get ahold of you or learn more about breathwork bed?
- 26:28Tim Thomas: Sure.
- 26:28Tim Thomas: Well, all professional engagements, I encourage them to go through LinkedIn, Tim Thomas, Breathwork In Bed.
- 26:33Tim Thomas: If you just want a really good night's sleep tonight, pick up your phone, put in three words: breathwork in bed.
- 26:40Tim Thomas: And I mentioned I don't give away things for free, but the first 28 days of that is free, so you can try it.
- 26:48Tim Thomas: And after that, it's like a cup of coffee a month.
- 26:50Tim Thomas: So, that's for people that want a better night's sleep tonight.
- 26:53Tim Thomas: And Tom, on the idea of permanency here I want people to not just hear a great conversation, I want them to give, to have something they can permanently access for the rest of their lives.
- 27:05Tim Thomas: I'd love to show a really quick breathwork thing that can help people, bring them back to center if that's okay.
- 27:10Tim Thomas: Do we have time for that?
- 27:12Tom Jackobs: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:13Tim Thomas: All right.
- 27:13Tim Thomas: This is, really, really simple, but there's-- everything's an invitation, especially when it comes to your body.
- 27:18Tim Thomas: And this is where, this is where everyone breathes, but not everyone's doing breathwork.
- 27:24Tim Thomas: And when we breathe differently, often it occurs differently.
- 27:29Tim Thomas: So I always ask for permission and invitation before we get started.
- 27:33Tim Thomas: So Tom, I'm gonna ask you three very easy questions before we do this very simple breathwork thing.
- 27:39Tim Thomas: And if you're listening at home, you can say yes or no, but it's as easy as saying, Tom, do you give permission to your very own breath to make every single cell in your body feel really, really good?
- 27:56Tom Jackobs: Yes.
- 27:58Tim Thomas: Awesome.
- 27:58Tim Thomas: That was easy.
- 28:00Tim Thomas: Tom, do you give permission to your very own breath to make your conscious thinking mind feel really, really good?
- 28:07Tom Jackobs: Yes.
- 28:09Tim Thomas: Perfect.
- 28:10Tim Thomas: Last one.
- 28:11Tim Thomas: Tom, do you give permission to your very own breath to make your unconscious mind feel really, really good?
- 28:18Tom Jackobs: Absolutely, yes
- 28:19Tim Thomas: Okay, now we're ready.
- 28:21Tim Thomas: We enjoy our breath to the level we let it in.
- 28:24Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 28:25Tim Thomas: People like us, we're out to doing things in the world.
- 28:27Tim Thomas: Sometimes it's hard to let things in.
- 28:29Tim Thomas: So that's why I always give permission.
- 28:31Tim Thomas: If you can say those three things to yourself before you do this breathwork technique, you are gonna be able to let this power in, in the, in the, in the fullest sense, okay?
- 28:41Tim Thomas: And you're gonna, you're gonna get a feel right now of just how immediate the impact of breathwork is.
- 28:48Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 28:49Tim Thomas: We're we're gonna get you to do, Tom, and people listening at home, just do this in a safe place.
- 28:53Tim Thomas: Don't do this driving or cutting up carrots I'm gonna get you to do is breathe in, but then breathe in more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more.
- 29:02Tim Thomas: Now hold it and just wriggle your shoulders.
- 29:04Tim Thomas: Hold it and wriggle your shoulders.
- 29:05Tim Thomas: Wriggle, wriggle, wriggle, wriggle.
- 29:06Tim Thomas: Wriggle it.
- 29:07Tim Thomas: Wriggle the shoulders.
- 29:07Tim Thomas: Open it up.
- 29:08Tim Thomas: Open it up.
- 29:09Tim Thomas: And if you're brave, I want a really loud sigh.
- 29:12Tim Thomas: Ahhh.
- 29:14Tim Thomas: Out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out.
- 29:23Tom Jackobs: All right.
- 29:25Tim Thomas: Now just breathe through your nose and let that energy circulate.
- 29:30Tim Thomas: And just check in with your body that I didn't do that for you.
- 29:34Tim Thomas: You did that for you.
- 29:34Tim Thomas: Your own breath did that for you.
- 29:37Tim Thomas: This power sitting underneath your ribcage.
- 29:40Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 29:40Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 29:42Tom Jackobs: Yeah
- 29:43Tim Thomas: Okay.
- 29:43Tim Thomas: Now that was just one, one breath.
- 29:47Tim Thomas: Now you might have noticed when you breathed in more and more, your top third filled up.
- 29:51Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 29:53Tim Thomas: Now we didn't just get more energy then because of more breath.
- 29:58Tim Thomas: We got more energy because we're, we're effectively an electrical circuit.
- 30:03Tim Thomas: Your brain's the electrical generator, and it handles these cables running through your system.
- 30:08Tim Thomas: And these cables aren't solid.
- 30:10Tim Thomas: they're squishy like your garden hose.
- 30:12Tim Thomas: And if you've ever stepped on your garden hose, there's less water going through.
- 30:15Tim Thomas: So watch what happens.
- 30:17Tim Thomas: If I've got the weight of the world on my shoulders, I'm hunching forward.
- 30:20Tim Thomas: What am I compressing?
- 30:21Tim Thomas: I'm compressing my top third, and effectively my structure is stepping on my own power cables.
- 30:28Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 30:29Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 30:30Tim Thomas: And when I worked with the British Special Forces, they found that between every degree your structure was out, you lost between 8 and 12% strength.
- 30:40Tom Jackobs: Wow.
- 30:41Tim Thomas: So consider that one breath that brings you in alignment could make you 8 to 12% stronger.
- 30:47Tim Thomas: This isn't woo-woo.
- 30:48Tim Thomas: This stuff works.
- 30:51Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 30:52Tim Thomas: Tom, just hold up two fingers like that.
- 30:56Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 30:57Tim Thomas: And I want you to put your thumb out, and I want you to pinch them together really tightly.
- 31:02Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 31:03Tim Thomas: Now feel that you're pinching really tightly.
- 31:05Tim Thomas: That is gonna be your power button.
- 31:08Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 31:09Tim Thomas: So right now, when we breathe in, halfway through the inhale, I want you to pinch and look up a little bit.
- 31:15Tim Thomas: Okay?
- 31:16Tim Thomas: And that is gonna boost your top third.
- 31:18Tim Thomas: So I invite you to have your power buttons ready.
- 31:20Tim Thomas: We'll call them power buttons.
- 31:21Tim Thomas: Blow it out.
- 31:23Tim Thomas: Start breathing in, hit the power buttons and look up.
- 31:27Tim Thomas: Now wriggle, wriggle, wriggle.
- 31:29Tim Thomas: Wriggle it, wriggle it, wriggle up any tension.
- 31:32Tim Thomas: Wriggle, wriggle, wriggle.
- 31:33Tim Thomas: Wriggle, wriggle, wriggle.
- 31:35Tim Thomas: And release that with a really loud sigh.
- 31:38Tim Thomas: Ah.
- 31:39Tim Thomas: Out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out.
- 31:45Tom Jackobs: Wow.
- 31:45Tom Jackobs: I feel like I got a lot of, excess air out or stale air out.
- 31:50Tim Thomas: Yeah.
- 31:51Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 31:53Tim Thomas: Tom, to back up what you're saying, if you want to perform in the top 3%, you've got to breathe into the top 3%, and then breathe out to the top 3%.
- 32:02Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 32:03Tim Thomas: You got that?
- 32:04Tim Thomas: So, so the takeaway from today is breathing into the top 3% and breathing out to the top 3%.
- 32:09Tim Thomas: And you can use those power buttons to do that.
- 32:14Tim Thomas: And so what does that look in real life?
- 32:16Tim Thomas: So when I set up my, my sovereign zone in the morning, when I become an energetic millionaire, when I have my morning routine squared.
- 32:24Tim Thomas: I know that the energy I need to perform, I know the zone I'm supposed to be in.
- 32:29Tim Thomas: Whenever I start getting out of that, whenever I start acting immature, let's say I'm in a line and I'm pissed off because it's taking so long.
- 32:35Tim Thomas: There's an old lady talking too long, right?
- 32:37Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 32:38Tom Jackobs: Right
- 32:38Tim Thomas: What I'll discreetly do instead of going,"Blah, that-- this is wrong, I need to make it right," I will pinch my fingers discreetly, wriggle my shoulders, and then let it out through my nose.
- 32:51Tim Thomas: And then that brings me back into the zone I want to be in.
- 32:55Tim Thomas: You got that?
- 32:56Tim Thomas: So just treat them, your buttons, as, as you're recentering,"Oh, okay, I'm getting pissed off." And then you access that top third, you plug back into yourself, you're not giving it away.
- 33:07Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 33:08Tim Thomas: So I really thank you for, allowing a little bit of extra time at the end so people can get permanent access.
- 33:14Tim Thomas: I feel that I'm fulfilling on my, P test when we, can have people who listen to this have a practical tool that they can use immediately and for the rest of their life.
- 33:24Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 33:25Tom Jackobs: I think what's a really great lesson there in, in relating it to business,'cause I like to do that every once in a while, is that, you know, we go through and we breathe in that middle part, and we go through life in that middle part.
- 33:37Tom Jackobs: It's in those extra places that we go that the magic really happens, and you just proved that with our breath.
- 33:46Tom Jackobs: So thank you for that.
- 33:47Tom Jackobs: It was amazing.
- 33:48Tom Jackobs: I feel great now too, so
- 33:50Tim Thomas: And, and that was like, what, two breaths?
- 33:52Tom Jackobs: Yeah, who said.
- 33:53Tim Thomas: I know, and I'll just hint at this.
- 33:55Tim Thomas: Imagine if you spent five minutes doing that.
- 33:58Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 33:59Tim Thomas: When people work with me one-on-one for an hour, we can go places that words cannot describe.
- 34:07Tom Jackobs: Hmm.
- 34:09Tom Jackobs: I can only imagine hour of the...
- 34:11Tom Jackobs: Yeah, can see that.
- 34:13Tom Jackobs: Incredible.
- 34:14Tom Jackobs: Well, Tim, thank you so much for being on the show today and sharing your journey, your expertise, and sharing that exercise as well.
