Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Scarlet, Orange, and Brown Podcast, a weekly breakdown of the Ohio State Buckeye's, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Here's your hosts, Ken Carpenter and Chris Husman.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome to the Scarlet Orange and Brown podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I'm Chris Husman.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: And this past week, the Bucks were in a bye.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: So Ohio State travels to the Coliseum out of USC for a 730 kick.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: The Bengals come alive in the second half with the 35-13 route of the Baltimore Ravens and the Browns come from behind again and beat the Tennessee Titans 27 to 24.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Another uh interesting week of football.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: It was a good week, Kenny.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We were two and up.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'll take that any day of the week, right?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And you know, I know we're down quarterbacks at Ohio State, uh, but you know what, it just feels good to be in this position, honestly.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, we have a pos we have a chance, and I mean, at the end of the day, that's all you can ask for.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And um I think people are not giving Luke Fehey, Tavian Sinclair, you know, some of the I guess they've played football before.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, they've grown up playing football.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So it's not the first time they've been back there.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So we'll see what happens.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Yes, well, they are at USC and the Trojans are six and two.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: You got a coach who is, I guess you could say, on the hot seat in Lincoln Riley.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Um, and they just had a not a very good look this past weekend, losing to Luke Fickle in Wisconsin 24-7.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: I think the Buckeyes have uh hopefully they'll benefit from uh having that week off and to get some guys healthy and get a chance to figure out what they're gonna do at quarterback.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a bunch of things you said there.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, let's start off with Lincoln Riley.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're talking about, you know, getting a group of donors together to buy out his what massive, what is it,$50 to$70 million contract remaining just so they can get him out of there.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, let's face it, uh, this loss will extinguish their playoff hopes, Kenny.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna get USC's best, you know, out there.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And even though we have Luke Fehey, Tavian St.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Clair, maybe a dual quarterback system behind the scenes, we are healthy.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And you are right.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh Ceravelle's coming back, and you know, a bunch of the guys were just dinged up or coming back, and uh Timmons and so on and so forth.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we'll go in there and we'll give her a good try.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I know USC had a brutal loss 24-7 up there to the fighting fickles.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Um, they had minus 17 yards rushing, uh net, Kenny, minus 17.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Uh the sacks that they gave up, the turnovers.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Um, that's just, you know, they're all calling for Lincoln Riley's head right now.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Well, the the Buckeyes are only giving up 13.4 points a game.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: But on the other end, Southern Cal, they have a quarterback in Jaden Maieva, and he's averaging about 300 yards through the air.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And so when you're talking about the quarterbacks, you know, Ryan Day was just uh spoke yesterday, and he said he didn't he didn't name who the starting quarterback was going to be.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: So um I would think that he's probably gonna stay with what he originally thought, but but I I can pretty much bet we're probably gonna see both of them.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I was I would say he had time.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Uh Arthur Smith had time to um you know throw in some packages for Tavian St.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Clair.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, we mentioned that last week on the SOB.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: How difficult is it to tackle somebody 6'4, 240 or 6'5, 240?
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's no easy task.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, you need to come up with some uh naked boots and things like that to go around the end uh with this guy and lead block, um, so on and so forth, just to get him active in the game.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: But um you mentioned OSU giving up 13.4 points per game, Kenny.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: USC's giving up 25.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I mean that that just bodes well for us.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, you're right, Jaden Wait may, but you know, it sack issues are hampering him.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, that offensive line is not protecting him at all.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, like I said, we need to be very careful with this game because, you know, USC's uh playoff hopes hinge on this.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, it here's some uncharacteristic things that you know might play into this game, too, Kenny, is there's a 50% chance of rain.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Uh it's only going to be 67 degrees out there.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: It's uncharacteristic for Southern California.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: OSU is a minus seven, 52.5 over and under on this, down from 7.5.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So Vegas is thinking something.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: It's going to be a little closer than what they think.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: But OSU has a 69 to 70% chance to win this game, Kenny.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: I'm bringing it down to two things.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: The OSU ground game, if it does rain, are far superior than USC with the line too, with Sareveld coming back.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And the second thing is uh USC's O-line concerns in the sacks and the pressures.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So I'm calling OSU 27 USC 17.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Yes, uh, you you mentioned the offensive line.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: It definitely needs a step back step up a little bit.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, you you think back to when the last time the Buckeyes had a an injury and at the quarterback position and it went really well when Cardell Jones stepped in.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: But what people don't realize is Cardell Jones had an unbelievable three-game run, but the the running backs and the offensive line accounted for over 200 yards a game.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: So that makes it a lot better.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: That just takes all the pressure off.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, if you're a lineman, you know, you get a block straight on or you got a pull and pull and you know pick off a um a guard or a defensive end.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, you know those in in my mind as an offensive line, that those are concrete tanks.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: I can just pin my ears back and I can move forward, uh, or I can do a counter or a trap play.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: You know, all those things are, you know, if everybody does their job, Kenny, it we should be going for five, seven yards a pop.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So you're exactly right on that.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: And I I think um, you know, Jackson, um, the Jackson, Jackson brothers maybe might even have a good day.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, some of those running backs, like I said, we said last week Isaiah West had a big, you know, he ran angry uh two weeks ago, and I think he's gonna have a nice little game too, as well.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: They're starting to get Legend Bay involved more.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Uh he's buying in, so I'd like to see that happening too.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think we're gonna see a big game from McEwen and these little medium throws, and uh, we're gonna move Jeremiah all over the place with a lot of motion.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, the other thing that people may not uh be thinking about is there could be some Wildcat formations with Legend Bay, because Legend Blay, Legend Bay played quarterback in high school.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And you know what, Kenny, what not a better player to do it with?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, you put the ball in this kid's hands, he's electric.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, he he does not go down easy.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And uh, this kid is um, you know, as advertised, like I said, he's starting, he's starting to mature, he's starting to buy into the system.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine Legend Bay in two more years?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, this kid is gonna be a force.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, once he learns how the college game is played, once he learns what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and he becomes a veteran back there, this kid's got a lot to offer if he can just stay focused.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Well, let me ask you this here.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: I threw this one out.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Rank the remaining five games, toughest to easiest, and those five games are going to be USC, Oregon, Northwestern, Nebraska, and finishing up at Michigan.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Well, for some reason, um, you know, uh, Oregon, um, you know, you have their quarterback coming in here, and he used to be um, he used to be a buckeye for a bit.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: He had a cup of coffee with the buckeyes, Dylan Rayola.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, he's in there too as well.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he's gonna be the starter and you know what their situation is going on in Oregon, but this two-game stretch with Oregon Northwestern, Kenny, and I know we got him um is Northwestern at home?
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, so those two stretches right there, to me, that's where we're gonna make hay.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Um Northwestern's a tough team, Kenny.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: They are playing well.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Um, they they're doing it, you know, they're uh they're pretty scary, to be honest with you.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So you know, if we can get by this USC game and you know, figure out what we want to do and how we want to attack it with this two-quarterback system, maybe, or just having Luke Fehey in there, I'm not sure.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: You know, we'll find out Saturday, but um, once we have a clear direction on what we want to do, that those that those two games right there really, really are in my mind.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Um, if we can get those two games as well, look out, Kenny.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: We might be rolling with a uh Cardell Jones situation, like you said.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I think the USC game's gonna be tough just because of it's USC, it's an away game, cross country, new quarterbacks.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Um of course the the Michigan game at the end is always going to be a challenge, but I think that uh the one game that if there was a game that's going to scare me more than any, I think it's the game at Nebraska.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Because Nebraska's only got two losses by a total of six points.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be interesting.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we could you couldn't go wrong saying anything here in that situation with that question, Kenny.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, all these games are important.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's not one game on there we can just sit relax and work on some things.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, every game we have from here on out, including the Big Ten Championship, if we make that, and then um the playoffs, I mean, is a big game.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's kind of like from the frying pan to the fryer each each week going into this game.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, you're right.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: At Nebraska is no easy task either.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: And, you know, Michigan, you know, even though their offense is stagnant, I mean, their defense is the is the real deal.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: So we got our hands full.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: The rest of the it's gonna be fun to watch, Kenny.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be fun to watch.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Um, everybody's gonna have an opinion, you know, on how they should use this or what they should do there.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And we need to use the tight ends more, we need to throw the backs in the flat, we need to do use more intermediate passes.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it all comes down to the line and the run game.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: You're exactly right, Kenny.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And we said it, uh, I think you said it last week, too, the the Joe Jermaine, Stanley Jackson.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Um was it Stanley Jackson?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, that th though that combo I thought was pretty deadly.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: I I really liked that.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, Joe Joe Jermaine coming in with his arm and then, you know, trying to tackle Stanley Jackson on a boot.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's just uh if we can utilize something like that, man, I that would just be so fun to watch to me.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: It was another crazy week of college football, and uh some games went ways that I didn't think they were going to go.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: What um how does your top five look this week?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Well, again, I have uh I you know I might be doing really, really well on my picks, Kenny, but uh as far as the top five is concerned, I have no clue.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Miami, I got one, High State, I got two.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, as far as when you get into three, four, and five every week, it's been something else.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think you got to throw Georgia in that three.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, I really do.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I just think they're they're up there.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: I I think um, you know, there there'll be some other uh SEC teams that come about.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: I really like how UK's playing right now uh too.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I think they're they're doing very well.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Um but these this SEC conference is just eating itself up.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, they are just knocking each other off left and right.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: So, Kenny, I I just think the three teams that are main out there are Miami, OSU, and Georgia right now.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Georgia's got a tough game coming up here with Florida at Atlanta.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Florida's getting 10 and a half, 11 on this game.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And if I'm a betting guy, which you know I am, Kenny, and I've been, I think, 18 and four right now uh on against a spread, which is unbelievable numbers.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: I would take Florida in a heartbeat on that.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: So uh I don't know how you got your list, Kenny, but I got Miami OSU Georgia, and then I got everyone else for four and five.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, well, there's probably eight teams that you could put in the top five, but I agree with you with Miami one, Ohio State two, Georgia three.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say Indiana at four, and a surprise team I'm gonna throw in at five.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: UCLA, still undefeated, and uh Notre Dame, Kentucky, and Utah on the outside looking in.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: I like it, Kenny.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, I I I wanted to ask you Game Day was out at Utah this past week, and the uh CIA FBI, one of those recommended to Pat McAfee to wear a bulletproof vest.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, he I I was stunned that that the girl that got picked to do the kick the first thing out of her mouth was you gave the BYU guy three million last week, and she was unhappy with just one million.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: And the thing was is McAfee gave up the one million, but the other two came from billionaires that were there for the game or whatever.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: And you know, I mean McAfee has his way of doing things, but I mean, my goodness, the guy's giving you a million dollars to kick a football in, and I just don't You may not like the way he does some things, but holy cow, I mean, I there ain't another person out there being that generous with their money.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's not, Kenny, but it you know, the key word there is money.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Anytime there's that type of money involved, you know there's going to be a problem here down the road.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: And they ran into it, to be honest with you.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: And, you know, Utah being Utah, I mean, I'm not getting political on here or anything like that, but you know, we had we had a crazy assassination out in Utah not too long ago.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it's just um, you know, I I get it.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: It's just, you know, the climate of the country right now and and a lot of money and student debt and things of that nature.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: And these kids, I mean, you know, it seems like they're indoctrinated into, you know, uh a lot of different things being shoved down their throat right now.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, you know, football got dragged into this.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And when you're talking about money and politics and, you know, this, that, and the other, it just unfortunately it's just uh it's not a it's not a uh equation that anybody wants to tackle.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Well, let's make the transition to the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: They got off to a slow start first half, didn't look too good.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: They went down 13-0, but then they just flipped the switch when they came out at halftime and put up 35 second-half points, borrow four TDs, and the defense stepped it up with four sacks.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: I was just, you know, if if the Bengals could put four quarters together, look out.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: 100%, Kenny.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, I I'm I'm to blame for a part of that too, because you know, I here I am sitting there, I'm thoroughly disgusted, you know, watching that first half.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: This is what you got after a bye week.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And if it wasn't for Jamar Chase uh having a, you know, I don't know if it was a players only or whatever meeting there at halftime, come to Jesus meeting at halftime, and calling guys out and just telling them how it was, and this is not acceptable.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, whatever he said uh to those guys uh resonated throughout the whole entire team and the coaching staff because they looked, you're right, Kenny, they looked like two different teams coming out and just throwing the ball all over the place.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: And uh Baltimore didn't know what hit him, Kenny.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was just it was it was actually refreshing and fun to see.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: I think it saved uh Zach Taylor from a lot of angst.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Uh not that there isn't already, but um man, he just he saved himself with that second half performance, and so did um uh uh Al Golden, the defensive coordinator.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, you saw the guys playing, having fun, laughing, and just going out and doing what they're supposed to do.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: And, you know, we're running routes and we're hitting receivers and the defense is uh feeding off the offense and the offense is feeding off the defense, and you know, we took one of the better teams in the AFC and just dismantled them.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: And you're right, Kenny.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: If we can put four quarters together like that, um, you know, we'll find ourselves in going deep into the postseason.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, I think an unsung hero that, you know, kind of these guys don't get a whole lot of credit.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: And I'm not sure if I'm gonna say his name right, but the punter, Ryan Raikal, Rayco.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Ray Cow.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: All four of his punts were inside the 20-yard line.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: So he definitely helped the defense by flipping the field.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, that's one of those things that doesn't get a whole lot of mention when you know you you see all the highlights every every week.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: But that's huge.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: One of the coaches that I deeply, deeply admire there, Darren Simmons, he's our special teams coach.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Um, this guy's been around forever.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: He's going goes clear back to the Marvin Lewis era and you know, uh uh doing that.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: But we are always um we are always pretty heady and pretty prepared when it comes to special teams.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Recal has just been a fabulous addition to us punting-wise.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: And you know, when you got somebody like McPherson too as well back there that can hit from anywhere, um, it just makes it easier on your offense.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: And, you know, like we said in week uh two or three on the SOB, I mean, punting necessarily isn't a bad thing.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: You know, when you have a defense like the Bengals that can play the way they did in the second half, you know, it's it's okay.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, and punting when you punt them down there and you hold them to a long field, it just puts that more pressure on a on a especially a backup quarterback like Huntley, who, in all seriousness, Kenny, could be a a starting quarterback for uh a lot of other teams in NFL.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Let me ask you, since you mentioned the quarterback, uh there's I heard talk about Lamar Jackson.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: He uh practiced this past week um leading up to the Cincinnati game.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: But it's almost like there people are starting to wonder if he's just like, you know, I'm gonna hold out hold myself out even though I'm capable of playing.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on that?
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, uh we've seen this and we've seen this pattern before, Kenny.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, we saw it a couple years ago when he was just you know, uh, nursing an injury, and it was like, no, no, no, no.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: And then all of a sudden he was done.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Now there was a contract, you know, in the wings on that too.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: And, you know, he he was just like, Yeah, I'll let you guys lose every game until you pay me.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: You know, I let you guys lose every game.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Now they're paying him.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: So he needs to do what he can uh because they're uh they're they're teetering Kenny right now.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, for him to come back to play uh a tough Buffalo team, I I just don't see it happening with you know with his with his past record and his track record in the past.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: I just don't see it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, I he could be waiting until the bye week come, you know.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know what what the deal is with him, but um, you know, I know a high ankle sprain and things like that's not easy to come back from, but you know, when part of his uh a lot of big part of his game is scrambling around back there and making things happen.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, if he doesn't have that in his repertoire, it could be a long season for the Ravens here.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: And you know, the the thing that I I think about is, you know, this past week I saw some different things out where it showed the remaining schedule and strength of schedule and both the Bengals and the Browns got some favorable news as far as strength of schedule that they have left.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: So I think it's gonna benefit them if they just take care of business when they they play these teams that they technically should beat.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we said it here on the SOB a couple weeks ago, Kenny, that you know, uh my goal was for you know for the Bengals to win four out of the six next games.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: That would put us at seven and five or seven and uh four and look pretty good on the tail end stretch um to maybe getting a 10-11 wins.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: I think the latest projection they had us at 10.8, which would lead the AFC North.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Um one thing that was really concerning to me was the Browns.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: They had it um they had it 8.9.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, that kind of just made me wonder a little bit.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: I'm like, eh, I don't know.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: With the Browns remaining schedule and the Bengals remaining schedule, you know, we could take off.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, Pittsburgh's got a decent little schedule left, uh, to be honest with you.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And um how they're getting it done, I don't know.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: You know, I think a lot of it's just Aaron Rodgers, but um, you know, it it'll be interesting how this AFC North plays out because we uh it Push comes a shove.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: We're starting to get into that AFC, the meat of the AFC North schedule.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: And you know, Cleveland's got a tough one with Pittsburgh coming up too.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: So um there, but the thing is, Cleveland's, I Cleveland's excited.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Oh man, are they excited uh now?
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: So look out, man.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I think this AFC North is going to be fun to watch.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Before we jump to Cleveland, uh the Bengals play, they're four-and-two.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: They play Tennessee Titans, who the Browns just beat this past weekend.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: How do you see that one when they play Tennessee?
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Well, it kind of the same thing uh, you know, that I said with uh Cleveland when they play Tennessee, you got to stop Pollard.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Pollard is their dynamic back.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you stop Pollard and uh you force that quarterback to make plays down the field, I mean, you know, that plays right into our uh into our scheme, you know, same thing it did with Cleveland.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: So um good special teams play, good defense, stopping the run.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Um, and then offensively, we just you know, we take what the defense give defense gives us, you know, Joe Burrow.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Let's play a good sound fundamental game.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Let's hit intermediate passes.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we're number one in the NFL when it comes to third and one, fourth and one.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Uh let's get in those short-yarded situations, and um then we can take some chances.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: But, you know, I like this game coming up.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think we got all the momentum in the world for us right now, and we need to continue that against a down Tennessee team.
- 23:27unknown: Yes.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Well, the Browns, Deshaun Watson had another late fourth quarter drive that led to a, as the clock ran out, Smith field goal for the win.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Casey Concepcion had a career day.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: He was uh eight collected eight passes for 129 yards.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Quinshawn Judkins ran the ball much better at two first half TDs.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: But they started off slow again and gave up touchdown early, and it just something I don't know, it's almost like uh a pitcher in baseball.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: You gotta give him a little bit more time in the bullpen before you bring him in to start the game.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, we mentioned on the SOB a couple of weeks ago that, you know, they got to get off to a fast start.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I think they were averaging 40 or the week prior, they played uh and they only had 48 yards um in the first half.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, they they they can that can't happen, Kenny.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're putting a lot of pressure on themselves in the third and fourth quarter.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, they they've been lucky so far and how they've handled those comebacks and the negotiated those wins.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: But um I like uh I saw Fannon with a just a backbreaker of a reception run uh that was just uh tremendous.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, that guy, he's bigger than what I thought he was, Kenny.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a big, big tight end uh slash slot uh coming across the middle there.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's he's a load.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I think they need to utilize him a little bit more, just like they used to use um uh utilize Najoku um on there.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: But you know, use those a little bit more.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Um let's do some more of the check down intermediate throws.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, let's uh let's let's utilize that.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: We'll take our, you know, we got we got Boston, and we, you know, we got um Concepcion and and you got Jerry Judy in there too.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: You know, we can take our chances, but it doesn't have to be every time down there.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, we can utilize these five, seven, you know, 12-yard throws with Fannon and the backs and with Judkins and running the ball the way he is, and that's just gonna open it up more for Judkins too, uh, in the run game.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Well, the uh the Browns play Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh's a three and a half point favorite at Pittsburgh.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: And the the the stat that jumps out to me more than anything in this game is when you play uh overseas in Europe, you have a choice with when you come back, you can take your bye week.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's totally up to the team.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Pittsburgh chose not to, and since they started playing in Europe, teams that did not take their bye are one six and one when they come back after all that travel and trying to play.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: So that could be something that favors the Browns, but they are playing in Pittsburgh, and that's always uh a challenge for Cleveland when they go to Pittsburgh.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: That's a great stat, Kenny.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, uh to me, honestly, I think Pittsburgh, you know, they want to ride that momentum wave.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously they didn't know about the momentum before they took, you know, neglected to take their bye week, but you know, I think they're on a momentum thing right now going on, albeit the loss to Cleveland a couple weeks ago.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, they're playing decent right now, I guess is the word.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, for them.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, every prognostic prognosticator that I've listened to out there, you know, they're just getting they're getting by with smoke and mirrors.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: And, you know, eventually that's gonna run out, Kenny.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And you know, at the end of the day, talent is gonna take over.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I just wonder how long that talent uh is gonna last for Pittsburgh.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: So I'm pulling for Cleveland this weekend.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: I got Cleveland actually winning this game and a close one, uh, 24 to 20.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I think it's gonna be another good AFC showdown this weekend the way it should be.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: And um just hoping everybody for Cleveland stays healthy.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Who do you have in this game?
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, you do you take the Browns with getting three and a half, or do you think Pittsburgh wins it?
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Well, I think Pittsburgh's gonna I think Pittsburgh's gonna give a good contest here.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be a defensive type thing, but at the same time, you know, I I do I do like the Browns in us, you know, like said 24-20.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: They got a great chance to go in there and sweep the uh Steelers.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm gonna take, just based on the stat alone of teams coming back from Europe at 1-6-1, I'm gonna take the Browns in a 20-17 win this this coming weekend.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Upset-wise, I definitely got Florida uh in college um right now uh with the plus 11, 10 and a half over Georgia.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: That game's gonna be at a neutral site, it's gonna be in Atlanta.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know if it's how neutral it is being in Atlanta with Georgia, but at the same time, at least it's not in Athens.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: So um one of the teams that um I'm calling for, and you called this too, Kenny, how good Northwestern is playing too.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: But I like Northwestern plus three and a half over Oregon.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: And one of the things I like too is Navy plus 30 and a half uh over Notre Dame.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: So those are my three right now that I'm leaning on.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Well, I agree with you on the upset.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I tell I like Northwestern getting three and a half at Oregon and my locks this week.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: I got Nebraska minus seven and a half at Washington, and Missouri giving ten to Arkansas, who Arkansas just seems like they're just they're a mess down there.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're wearing the bags over their heads, the fans are and everything.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: So I'm thinking uh Missouri's gonna take care of business there.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: The crazy story of the week, I like to look around and see what's out there.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: And this one comes from back where I grew up, uh a little uh west of there, I guess you could say, but uh Union Local High School was playing Barnesville.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: Um and Barnesville was up 41 nothing at half, and that's a that's a rival game for those two because they're so close.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: And as a it was 41 nothing at halftime and I guess the coaches coming out of the press box were coming down, a union local booster said to the one of the coaches, Do you guys happen to watch film this week?
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Oh my and uh this guy I guess uh he wasn't having it, and uh he took the guy to the ground and um you know it had to be broke up and uh they uh ended up Union local school district agreed to settle with the guy for$300,000.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, Kenny, I mean, we've been around uh we we could have a whole entire uh show on the SOB about our coaching stories and parents and how to deal with uh things of that nature.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's it comes with the territory.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Um anytime you got coaches uh coming down the middle of you know from the press box or going up to the press box and you're coming down the middle of uh you know through the fans.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just not one of those things.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, parents are parents do things, A, because they love their kids, and and B, because they want the best for them and what they didn't have.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the best thing to do in those situations is just bite your tongue and keep on going.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, unfortunately, it costs that school district$300,000 uh, you know, is a really tough lesson for them.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but at the same time, we would always say it, Kenny, that 24-hour rule where, you know, you just you don't fire off that email or you don't say what you want to say, you kind of wait a day, let it digest, and then you can deal with that situation where maybe we could call that parent in, let them air their grievances and their differences, and tell them how bad the coaching staff is, and say, I understand, but this is not the time and a place.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: The parent would agree, the coach would agree, and everybody'd move on.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, but instead we had a physical altercation, and you know, nothing good comes out of that, Kenny.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: And there's coaches, whether you're 10 and 0 or 1 and 9 all across the country that are they're they're gonna hear stuff, and we've heard so many things in our coaching careers, and you know, uh as a coach of of any any any program out there, you know, when you're talking about um college, uh, you know, even in the pros, they got to deal with agents.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're on first name basis with the agents in the pros.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: And the agents are standing in that practice that are on the sidelines during you know games and whatnot.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Um, so you got to deal with them.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: But you know, in high school specifically, which is what we're really familiar with, being a coach, not only do you have to coach your team, you have to coach your administrators, uh, you have to coach your athletic director, you have to coach the bus drivers, you also have to coach the parents, and you have to coach the booster group.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: So it's not an easy job to do.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Boosters get involved as a booster on a high school level because they want uh a say.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: They want to say in how things are done.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the day, you don't have a say.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: It's the head coach.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And, you know, as a head coach, you have to make those, you have to make that line, that fine line specifically clear.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: You know, I know coaches, uh successful coaches that are out there, they go into a booster meeting and they say, Here's what I want.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: This is what I want you to raise money for.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna leave now.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: And they'd leave, and then the parents talk about what's how they're gonna raise the funds.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: You know, in other programs, you know, it's like a uh, you know, I remember a coach uh around here locally that we used to have.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: They used to have a uh breakdown film on Saturdays at a local pub, and the parents would show up and they'd break down film, and it was kind of a QA answer, you know, thing.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: And, you know, to me, I would never get into that.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: You know, here's what I was thinking there, here's what I was thinking there, here's why I'm not passing here, here's why I'm not doing this.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: You know, I guess it is an environment where you can air your grievances in a can sort of a controlled environment somewhat, but I would never open myself up to that situation.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, in colleges, I mean, just look, I mean, Ryan Day loses a game, everybody's calling for him to be fired, you know, and I mean you just can't please everybody, Kenny.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: It's one of those professions where you you cannot please 100% of the people.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: You really can't.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: And um, as much as we'd like to, and as much as we just want to be out there for the kids and have the kids have a positive experience, all these X factors, and I'm talking about grown-up X factors get into the way.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: And you know what that equals, Kenny?
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Disaster.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Anytime you get grown-ups involved in a in a in a sport, you know how it is.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, Kenny, I'm talking to you, I'm preaching to the choir because you've been through it probably more than I have.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: And and um, you know, it's just one of those things where, you know, if you don't please the right people, then um, you know, they're gonna get.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: I remember, and here's a quick side, you know, I'll give you the reader's digest version for this.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: I used to coach at a football program, and one day I showed up for practice and the local news, we had two of the local news um um channels were there.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: You know, they had the big vans with the antenna up going, and I'm thinking, what in the world's going on?
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, we're we're like three and three.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, they can't be they can't be there to say, you know, how good are we doing?
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: You know, what are we doing?
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: What's the secret?
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: You know, anything like that, and come to find out that um, you know, uh they uh we played a team down in another area of a city, and uh they snapped a snapshot of him, and then somebody saw that picture and said, Hey, that's the guy that stole my purse uh at a church uh event, and they called the school district that we were coaching at and explained, you know, this guy sold a purse, he's got a record of this, that, and the other, and one thing led to another, and you know, he had a uh big record of uh of theft, and um, you know, the news got a hold of it, and it was just uh I all week, you know, for weeks to come after that, it was just it wasn't right.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, and what that does is it brings everybody's opinion into play.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And we don't know, I mean, what goes on behind closed doors and what coaches have in their skeletons they have in their closet, Kenny.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: It's just it's crazy.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, there are stories out there that that would just uh you know make somebody's jaw drop.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: And if I could if I could share one, it it's not me, but my old high school coach, he's still coaching, and um he's in like year 46 of teaching.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: He took his team again to the playoffs.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: And he was um he had a game where they the team didn't play well.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: He felt like he didn't do a good enough job as a coach.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: And when he got back from the it was an away game, when he got back, he went to go to his car to go home that night and uh the back window of his car was shot out.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: And yeah, um his take on it, which totally blew me away, was he's like, well, the person who did this respects me, so I I I get where they're coming from.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: And I'm I was like, What do you mean they shot your back window out?
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: He goes, Well, if they really wanted were really upset with me, they'd shot the front window out, and I wouldn't have been able to drive home.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, he he had a different approach to it.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: So I thought, well, you know, I guess that's one way to look at it.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: But that's one thing how you spin it.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: I can't, hey, one of my favorite movies, Tom Cruise and all the right moves, Hampipe, Pennsylvania, right?
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: And Craig Nelson was a football coach uh there.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: And Steph Georgeovich, right?
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: Kicked him off the team at halftime, you know, they were playing bad.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: And what do they do?
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: They put for sale signs all over his front front yard, right?
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: And um, sorry, Mila uh is uh she's barking at a local neighbor.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: But uh anyway.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: Uh and they trash his house, you know, and I mean it's you you hear those stories all the time, Kenny.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's it's um it's amazing what some of these coaches go through, uh, to be honest with you.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: And you know, some of us deserved, to be honest with you, and and and most of it's not.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: And um, it's a tough job that we've done and that we do and that these coaches do, and I get it.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but some of these programs, Kenny, what these coaches are making now, I mean, we looked the other day, I think I shared with you a couple weeks ago what some of these coaches in Georgia and Texas are making.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, they don't teach, and you know, they're getting up to close to upwards of uh$200,000 a year.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, they got a car allowance, uh, they got a home allowance, they got all these things.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: That just comes with the territory.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: But when you're talking backyard Ohio football, you know, coaches aren't making that.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, they got you know, three or four classes they're teaching, you know, some of them are doing this, some of them are doing that.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, some of them have some cake jobs, you know, some of them are doing OWE, you know, and driving around, making sure the kids are working okay.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, it's just uh it's a it's a mixed bag from district to district, and with that, you're gonna have parents that have you know different opinions on things.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, no doubt.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: It's not a level playing field.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: I know that.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: That's for sure.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: Well, hey, that puts a wrap on week nine of the Scarlet Orange of Brown podcast.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: I'm Chris Husman.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Thanks for listening.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: SOB.
