- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption,
- 0:22and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel
- 0:26According to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:37Are you bearing fruit? Are you a fruitful Christian?
- 0:41I alluded the other day to John chapter 15 where the Lord Jesus
- 0:45talked to His disciples about Him being the vine and us being the
- 0:49branches and God the Father making it so that we would bear fruit,
- 0:53more fruit, much fruit, and fruit that remains for the
- 0:56glory of God. I want to tell you that you don't plant
- 1:01fruit trees just so they look pretty. You want fruit. And you don't plant a
- 1:04garden just so it looks nice. You want fruit.
- 1:08Don't you think that if the Lord has worked in our life to plant us
- 1:12and to put into us certain things, that he should expect to
- 1:16find fruit when he comes inspecting our lives?
- 1:20Don't you think that the fruitfulness of our lives should point
- 1:23other people to the God of all fruitfulness? The answer to
- 1:28that is absolutely. And so we return today to Ruth chapter number 4,
- 1:32to this amazing prayer, a prayer
- 1:35of blessing on the union of Boaz and Ruth,
- 1:38a prayer that God answered in a mighty way. But at the heart of
- 1:42the prayer is this idea of fruitfulness.
- 1:45Listen to it again, verse 11. Now the people pray this: The
- 1:49Lord make the woman that has come into thine house
- 1:53like Rachel and like Leah, which 2
- 1:58did build the house of Israel. Now let's pause there
- 2:02for just a moment. What, what are they praying? Rachel and Leah?
- 2:07Well, if you go back in your mind, you remember that Rachel and Leah were
- 2:11literally the mothers of Israel, that they had 13 children
- 2:16between them, and it was their offspring that
- 2:20would become the tribes of the entire
- 2:24nation of Israel, the 12 tribes of Israel. And so this
- 2:28is very, very important because what they're saying is, let's go back
- 2:31to the beginning. In the beginning, it was God who made us fruitful.
- 2:35Watch this. And now here we are in the period of the Judges,
- 2:39in a season of darkness, in a time of difficulty.
- 2:43Who can make us fruitful again? Only God
- 2:47can. Would you go back to the beginning in your mind and remember how
- 2:51God made you fruitful? Would you remember how the Lord
- 2:54worked so that you would bear fruit?
- 2:57And perhaps in the early days as a young Christian, you really were bearing fruit.
- 3:01You didn't realize it, but the fruit of the Spirit was being produced in your
- 3:05life— love and joy and peace and long-suffering and gentleness
- 3:09and goodness and faith and meekness and temperance. And the fruit of a Christian—
- 3:13you were reproducing other believers. You were witnessing and sharing your faith and and others
- 3:17were coming to know Christ. The fruit of the righteous is a
- 3:21tree of life, and he that winneth souls is wise. Or let me ask you,
- 3:25are you fruitful now? Do you bear the fruit
- 3:28of the Holy Spirit's work? Are you becoming more like
- 3:32the Lord Jesus? Is there more love and joy and
- 3:36peace and long-suffering and gentleness and goodness and faith and meekness and temperance, or less?
- 3:41Are you bearing more fruit in bringing souls to Christ,
- 3:45or are you bearing less? Remember when Jesus walked
- 3:49past that fig tree that day? It was representative in
- 3:52his parabolic teaching of the nation of Israel. He found no fruit on it,
- 3:55he cursed it. By the next day, it withered up. He was teaching a
- 3:59lesson, because if, if something is not going to bear fruit,
- 4:04then it's going to be rejected. It cannot be used. May I say
- 4:08to you, I don't want to be one of the Christians
- 4:11that gets set on the shelf, cannot be used. I want to be one of
- 4:15those that is bearing fruit for the Lord. And I really believe this. I believe
- 4:18God will continue to tend the trees in
- 4:22the vineyard, in the orchard, that are bearing fruit for the glory
- 4:26of God. Are you fruitful? Let's make
- 4:30this our prayer. Lord, make us fruitful like we were in the early days.
- 4:34Give us a passion for God like we had in the early days. Let us
- 4:38get back to our first love and the first principles and do the first works.
- 4:42Lord, we want the, the fruitfulness, uh, the,
- 4:46the freshness that we knew in the very beginning.
- 4:50And then the prayer continues in verse number 12: And let thy
- 4:54house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar
- 4:59bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord
- 5:03shall give thee of this young woman. Now, what is this a reference to?
- 5:06Well, this is a reference to Genesis chapter number 38. You remember
- 5:09in Genesis chapter number 38 that there is a
- 5:14moment here where children are being born and there's great travail.
- 5:18Listen to verse number 27 of Genesis 38. It came to pass
- 5:23in the time of her travail that behold, twins were in her womb.
- 5:27And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out
- 5:31his hand, and the midwife took and bound upon his hand
- 5:35a scarlet thread, saying, this came out first. And it came to pass, as he
- 5:39drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. And she said, how hast
- 5:43thou broken forth? This breach be upon thee. Therefore his name was
- 5:47called Perez. And afterward came out his brother that
- 5:50had the scarlet thread upon his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
- 5:55And so here we have 2 brothers being born,
- 5:59and it is quite a travail, quite a, a difficult delivery,
- 6:03if you will. And yet it was through that delivery
- 6:07and through the line of Perez that blessing would come.
- 6:12Can I just say to you that fruitfulness will cost you? There will be travail,
- 6:15there'll be difficulty. If you see someone
- 6:19bearing fruit, know this: they've experienced death.
- 6:22They've experienced travail. A life always comes out of death.
- 6:26When a— when an expectant mother goes to, to give birth to a
- 6:30child, they literally go to the, to the jaws of death,
- 6:33if you will, to bring new life into the world. It is always
- 6:37through travail that triumph comes. It is always through
- 6:41the cross that resurrection power is known.
- 6:44See, lots of people want the product without the process. They want to be fruitful
- 6:48but they're not willing to die. They're not willing to come to the end of
- 6:52themselves and travail with the Lord. You know,
- 6:56the old-timers used to talk about praying through,
- 6:59and while that term can be misinterpreted,
- 7:04misapplied, and can be misused,
- 7:08I do believe there's something to pressing in in prayer
- 7:12and pressing on in obedience, even through the difficulty,
- 7:16even when it doesn't feel good, even when it is hard.
- 7:20Because on the other side of that, let me tell you what there is— there
- 7:23is greater fruitfulness. And I'm just testifying
- 7:27to you today, I want to be a more fruitful Christian. I want
- 7:31to bear fruit to the glory of God. Ruth became a
- 7:34fruitful woman. By the way, some of
- 7:39you may be listening right now and you may be thinking I'm speaking only of
- 7:41having children. Certainly I believe that children are heritage of the
- 7:45Lord and the fruit of the womb is his reward. That is part of
- 7:48the fruitfulness God gives to a family. And the,
- 7:52the psalmist talked about your wife being like a,
- 7:56a vine and growing up and the, and the tree bearing
- 7:59fruit. Spurgeon had a wonderful remark on that. He said
- 8:03there are some families that cannot have children. Some of
- 8:07our dearest friends could not have children of their own, but Spurgeon made this observation
- 8:11He said if a woman is bearing the fruit of Christ and the fruit of
- 8:15the Spirit, then she is not unfruitful. I love that because the greatest fruit
- 8:19is never physical, it is always spiritual. And may
- 8:24I point out, it is also the fruit that you can have all of your
- 8:27life. There is a, a childbearing age when it comes to
- 8:32a mother, but friend, you can bear fruit in any season
- 8:36of your life, which means right where you are However old you are,
- 8:39whatever your circumstances may be, if you'll be willing to go
- 8:43back to the beginning and die to self,
- 8:46you can be made a fruitful believer. Think about this.
- 8:50This book opens with a funeral but closes with a wedding and
- 8:54children. It begins with death and ends with life.
- 8:58A baby comes, a family comes, a future comes. We'll see
- 9:02that shortly. That is all the Lord's doing.
- 9:05God himself can make you fruitful if you will put yourself
- 9:09in the place where he can work in and through your life.
