- 0:00Welcome back to Reformed Thinking.
- 0:02I have to admit I had a hard time sleeping last night after
- 0:04reading through the material for this deep dive.
- 0:06That is not the usual reaction we get.
- 0:08Usually people are excited or curious.
- 0:11Why the insomnia? Because it just, it completely
- 0:14messed with my categories. We spend so much time in the
- 0:16church and, you know, just in society generally talking about
- 0:21how to fix our lives. Right.
- 0:22How to be better people? How to clean up our act.
- 0:25And then I read these essays, The Empty House and the Vacuum
- 0:28of the Soul, and they basically argue that cleaning up your life
- 0:31might be the single most dangerous thing you can do.
- 0:33It sounds backward, doesn't it? Feels completely
- 0:36counterintuitive. Completely.
- 0:38We're trained from childhood to think that the mess is the
- 0:41problem. You know, the addiction, the
- 0:43anger issues, the chaotic schedule.
- 0:46We could just tidy all that up. We're good.
- 0:48We've done our part. But today we're looking at a
- 0:50parable from Jesus that says no, you can stop sinning.
- 0:54You can get organized. You can become a model citizen
- 0:57and end up in a spiritual state that is actually worse than when
- 1:00you were a total disaster. It is the paradox of the clean
- 1:04life. And frankly, it is one of the
- 1:07most unsettling teachings in the entire New Testament.
- 1:10We're looking at Matthew 12.4345 today.
- 1:14Yeah. And you're right to be rattled.
- 1:16This isn't a how to guide for self improvement.
- 1:19It's a. It's a warning.
- 1:20Warning against. Or just a warning against the
- 1:23vacuum. That's the core of what we need
- 1:25to get at today. The danger isn't that you clean
- 1:27the house. The danger is that you left it
- 1:29empty. OK.
- 1:30And what Jesus is getting at here, and this is the really
- 1:32scary part, is that there is the type of unbelief that looks
- 1:35indistinguishable from holiness to the naked eye.
- 1:38That is the part that gets me. It looks like Holiness.
- 1:41It does. It isn't loud.
- 1:42It isn't rebellious. It pays its taxes.
- 1:45It mows the lawn. Right, it speaks politely it.
- 1:47Speaks politely, but Jesus calls it lethal.
- 1:50So we're going to break this down using the lens of Reformed
- 1:53theology, and we'll touch on the Westminster Confession to help
- 1:55us, you know, categorize things like common grace versus special
- 1:59grace. Because if we don't get those
- 2:01categories right, we will absolutely misinterpret the
- 2:03whole story. OK, so the mission is to figure
- 2:06out why a swept and ordered life can be a trap, and more
- 2:10importantly, how we avoid falling into it.
- 2:13But before we get to the scary haunted house part of the story,
- 2:17we need to set the stage. Where does this story even land
- 2:21in the Bible? Because context is everything.
- 2:24It is. We're in Matthew chapter 12, and
- 2:26if you're reading through the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 12 is
- 2:28what I would call a hinge point. A hinge point?
- 2:30How so? Well, up until now, Jesus has
- 2:33been revealing who he is. Miracles, teaching, healing.
- 2:38The revelation is just mounting, but at the same time the
- 2:41resistance is mounting. It's rising to meet him.
- 2:43It is by the time we get to Chapter 12, the religious
- 2:46leaders, the Pharisees, they're done with being polite.
- 2:48They're actively looking for a way to destroy him.
- 2:50So this isn't just a campfire story about demons, this is a
- 2:53weapon. It is a surgical strike, and the
- 2:56confrontation that triggers it is, well, it's intense.
- 2:59Jesus performs an exorcism. He heals a man who is demon
- 3:02oppressed, blind and mute. So a pretty undeniable miracle.
- 3:06I mean, the guy standing there seeing and talking, the crowds
- 3:10are just stunned. They start whispering.
- 3:12Could this be the son of David, which is, you know, Messianic
- 3:17language? And the Pharisees panic.
- 3:18They have to shut that narrative down immediately.
- 3:21But they have a huge problem. They can't deny the miracle.
- 3:24The guy's right. There the guy is, standing right
- 3:26there. Everyone saw it, so since they
- 3:29can't deny the fact of the power, they have to attack the
- 3:32source of the power. And this is where they make that
- 3:34accusation that just it makes you gasp when you read it.
- 3:37They say it is only by Beelzebel, the Prince of demons,
- 3:41that this man casts out demons. Let's just pause on that for a
- 3:45second. Think about the implications.
- 3:47They are looking at mercy. They are looking at a man who is
- 3:50trapped in total darkness and is now free.
- 3:54They are seeing light. Yes.
- 3:56And they look at the light of the world and say, that is the
- 3:58devil. It is breathtakingly evil.
- 4:00I mean, it is the very definition of the unpardonable
- 4:04sin, the blasphemy against the Spirit.
- 4:07It isn't just, you know, saying a curse word against God.
- 4:10It is a settled, determined rejection where you look at the
- 4:14clear work of the Holy Spirit and you call it the work of
- 4:16Satan. You're calling Good.
- 4:18You're calling good evil and evil good.
- 4:20And Jesus. He doesn't take that lying down.
- 4:24He dismantles their logic. First he says if Satan is
- 4:27casting out Satan, his Kingdom is divided and it will fall.
- 4:31It makes no sense for the devil to liberate people.
- 4:33But then he pivots to the warning.
- 4:36He tells them that because they have rejected the spirit,
- 4:38they're in a very, very precarious spot.
- 4:41They ask him for a sign, as if the healing wasn't enough.
- 4:44Which is just insulting. It is, and he refuses to give
- 4:47them a parlor trick. Instead, he gives them the sign
- 4:49of Jonah. Which is direct reference to his
- 4:51future death and resurrection. Three days in the belly of the
- 4:54earth. It is, but then he twists the
- 4:56knife. He brings up the men of Nineveh.
- 4:58Now remember, Nineveh was the capital of Assyria.
- 5:00These were pagans. Brutal, violent enemies of
- 5:03Israel. Absolutely.
- 5:04They didn't have the Torah, they didn't have the Temple, they had
- 5:06nothing. But they repented.
- 5:08They repented at the preaching of Jonah, who was, let's be
- 5:10honest, a reluctant, grumpy prophet.
- 5:13And Jesus says the men of Nineveh will stand up at the
- 5:16judgment with this generation and condemn it, because here
- 5:19stands something infinitely greater than Jonah, God in the
- 5:21flesh. And these religious leaders,
- 5:24with all their Bibles and all their theology, they refused to
- 5:27bow. So when he tells this parable
- 5:29about the unclean spirit, he isn't talking to random people
- 5:33on the street. No, he's talking to this evil
- 5:35generation. He's talking to national Israel.
- 5:38That is the primary interpretation.
- 5:40You have to view it historically first before you apply it to
- 5:42yourself. Israel had a long history of
- 5:45being messy. Think about the Old Testament
- 5:47before the Babylonian exile. What was Israel's big recurring
- 5:51problem? Idolatry, the visible gross
- 5:54kind. Statues of Baal, Asherah, poles
- 5:58on the hills, all of it. Right.
- 6:00It was obvious they were cheating on Yahweh with blocks
- 6:02of wood and stone. So God sends them into exile in
- 6:05Babylon, 70 years of judgement, and when they come back, what's
- 6:10different? The idols are gone.
- 6:12Gone. The exile worked.
- 6:13It swept the house clean of that particular sin.
- 6:17I see where you're going with this.
- 6:18By the time Jesus shows up on the scene, you don't see Jews
- 6:21bowing down to golden calves anymore. 0 They were fiercely
- 6:26monotheistic. They were obsessed with the law.
- 6:28They were culturally tight. The House of Israel was, on the
- 6:31outside, incredibly clean. But, and this is the butt of the
- 6:35entire episode, it was empty. That's it.
- 6:38They had gotten rid of the idols, but they hadn't filled
- 6:40that void with the true love for God.
- 6:42They love their tradition, they love their nation, but they
- 6:45didn't know the Father. They didn't recognize the Son.
- 6:47So the parable is a diagnosis of Israel.
- 6:50They are the clean house. Exactly.
- 6:52But like all scripture it has a dual application.
- 6:54It diagnosis the nation of Israel then, and it diagnosis
- 6:57the human soul now. OK, let's get into the mechanics
- 6:59of the parable then. Matthew 12.43 when the unclean
- 7:03spirit has gone out of a person. Stop right there.
- 7:06That first phrase, unclean spirit.
- 7:09The Greek is Numa, a Catherine. In the Levitical system, being
- 7:13unclean meant you couldn't approach God.
- 7:16You were separated from the Tabernacle.
- 7:18So it's not just about being like morally dirty, it's about
- 7:21separation it. Is so.
- 7:23This spirit is an agent of separation.
- 7:25It is the anti spirit. The Holy Spirit brings us into
- 7:28God's presence. The unclean spirit drives us
- 7:31away into the dark. The text says it has gone out,
- 7:34It doesn't say it was killed, it doesn't say it was destroyed.
- 7:37It just left. The phrasing is very specific.
- 7:41It implies A departure, not necessarily a violent eviction
- 7:44by a superior power. It allows for the idea that the
- 7:48evil influence has just ceased for a time.
- 7:50Maybe it's a strategic withdrawal, or maybe, Or maybe
- 7:53it's the restraining power of what we call common grace, where
- 7:56God in his mercy prevents evil from being as bad as it could be
- 7:59just to keep society functioning.
- 8:01But the key is, the demon is still out there.
- 8:04The threat isn't neutralized. And it goes the waterless
- 8:06places. What is that about?
- 8:07Is that just, you know, geography like the Sahara?
- 8:10It's theological geography in the ancient mind and in biblical
- 8:14imagery, the wilderness, the desert, is the place of the
- 8:18curse. It's where life doesn't
- 8:20flourish. Remember Leviticus 16, the
- 8:23scapegoat? Yeah, on the Day of Atonement,
- 8:25the priest confesses all the sins of Israel over the goat and
- 8:28then sends it. Where?
- 8:30Into the wilderness? To Azazel.
- 8:34It's sent away from the camp, away from God's presence, into
- 8:36the realm of death and chaos. So when the demon goes to
- 8:40waterless places, it's going to its natural habitat.
- 8:43It's going to the realm of the curse.
- 8:45But the text says it is seeking rest.
- 8:49That seems like a very human thing to do.
- 8:51Why is a demon seeking rest? This is fascinating, and it gets
- 8:54into a deep theological question.
- 8:55What is evil? Agustin defined evil not as a
- 8:58thing in itself, but as a privation of good.
- 9:01Like darkness is just the absence of light.
- 9:02Exactly. Evil cannot create anything.
- 9:05It can't create joy, it can't create peace.
- 9:07It certainly can't create rest. It can only corrupt corrupt what
- 9:09God has already created. So a demon can't just hang out
- 9:12in the desert and be happy it can't find its own peace.
- 9:15No, because it is eternally severed from God, who is the
- 9:18only source of rest. A fallen Angel is an eternally
- 9:22restless creature. But here's the darker part.
- 9:25Because it hates God, it finds its only satisfaction.
- 9:29It's only perverse rest. In marrying God's image Humans,
- 9:33we are the image bearers. A demon floating in a vacuum has
- 9:37nothing to destroy. It has no canvas to slash.
- 9:40So it wanders through these waterless places and it's
- 9:43frustrated. It's miserable.
- 9:46It wants a host. It needs a person to inhabit.
- 9:48It wants to twist a mind, wreck a body, ruin a soul.
- 9:51That is the only rest. It knows the twisted
- 9:54satisfaction of destruction. That makes the waterless places
- 9:57sound less like a punishment for the demon and more like a
- 9:59waiting room. It's just biting its time.
- 10:02And eventually it decides the waiting is over.
- 10:04Verse 44 Then it says, I will return to my house from which I
- 10:06came. That possessive pronoun should
- 10:09make your skin crawl. My It doesn't view the human
- 10:12being as a person with a will. It views him as a container, a
- 10:15piece of property. A rental property.
- 10:17And the terrifying implication is that even though the demon
- 10:20had been gone for a while, maybe years, it still thinks it holds
- 10:24the title. Deed.
- 10:25Apparently so, because when it goes back, the door isn't
- 10:28locked, the lock hasn't been changed, there's no new owner.
- 10:31Let's talk about what it finds. This is the inspection.
- 10:34The demon shows up, looks in the windows, and sees the state of
- 10:37the soul. The text uses 3 specific words
- 10:40to describe the condition and I want to drill down on each of
- 10:44these because I think this is where so many of us live without
- 10:47even realizing. It these 3 words are the
- 10:49diagnostic kit for the soul. The house is empty, swept and
- 10:53put in order. Let's start with empty.
- 10:55The Greek word is golazanda. It means unoccupied, idle at
- 11:00leisure. This is the fundamental central
- 11:02problem. The house isn't chaotic, it
- 11:05isn't full of mud or trash. But there is no master.
- 11:08No one's home. No one is home.
- 11:09Theologically, this is the absence of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:12There's no burning altar in the Temple of the Heart.
- 11:15There is no enthroned Christ on the seat of the will.
- 11:18It is a vacuum. OK hold on, this is where I
- 11:20start to get pushy. If the bad spirit is gone, isn't
- 11:25that good? I mean if I stop being an
- 11:26alcoholic isn't that a positive thing?
- 11:28Why is empty a problem if the thing that filled it before was
- 11:31just garbage? That is the logical question.
- 11:34And yes, in a temporal social sense it is good.
- 11:37It's good for your liver to stop drinking.
- 11:39It's good for your family. That is common grace at work,
- 11:41right? But spiritually, a vacuum is
- 11:44unnatural. You cannot maintain a spiritual
- 11:47vacuum. The human soul was built to be
- 11:50inhabited. If God doesn't live there,
- 11:52something else will. You cannot simply not be bad.
- 11:55You must be. His emptiness is just an
- 11:57invitation for squatters. OK, so it's empty.
- 12:00Yeah, it's problem #1 Then the second word swept.
- 12:04Cerumenon. This implies the removal of
- 12:07visible filth, dust, dirt, cobwebs.
- 12:10This represents moral reformation.
- 12:11This is the guy who turns over a new leaf.
- 12:13New Year's resolution. Exactly.
- 12:15He stops the scandalous sins, he stops sleeping around, he stops
- 12:18gambling, he cleans up his language to the neighbors.
- 12:21He looks fantastic. He's really turned his life
- 12:23around. That's what we say.
- 12:24Precisely. And we praise it, and we should.
- 12:27On a civic level, that's a good thing.
- 12:29But Jesus is warning that you can sweep the floor without ever
- 12:32touching the foundation. You can remove the fruit of sin
- 12:36without killing the root of sin. And the third word put in order.
- 12:42This is my favorite 1 to analyze.
- 12:44The root word is cosmos. It implies an arrangement, an
- 12:48adornment. It is where we get the English
- 12:50word cosmetics. So he didn't just clean the
- 12:52house, he decorated it. He put makeup on his life.
- 12:54He did. It isn't just that the bad stuff
- 12:56is gone. He has put a new structure in
- 12:59its place. Maybe he adopted A strict
- 13:01routine. Maybe he started going to church
- 13:03not because he loves Jesus, but because he likes the community
- 13:07or the morals. Or the business contacts.
- 13:08Or the business contacts. Maybe he got into a political
- 13:11ideology that gave him a sense of purpose.
- 13:14He has arranged the furniture of his life perfectly.
- 13:16It all looks great. This sounds This sounds like the
- 13:18American Dream. It is successful, disciplined,
- 13:22moral, organized and dead. That is the horror of it.
- 13:27It's a well kept mausoleum that the outside is beautiful,
- 13:30polished, that the inside is empty of the spirit of life.
- 13:34This distinction you are drawing, it's really the
- 13:36difference between reformation and regeneration, isn't it?
- 13:39That's the theological language. That is the theological
- 13:41terminology, yes, and we have to keep them absolutely distinct.
- 13:44OK, break that down for us, because in everyday English,
- 13:47reform sounds great. The Protestant Reformation was a
- 13:49good thing after all. True, but in this theological
- 13:53context we are contrasting self reformation with divine
- 13:57regeneration reformation. It's human driven.
- 14:00It's behavior modification. I use my willpower or my feel of
- 14:04consequences or my pride to change my habits.
- 14:07I will stop doing X. That is me with my own little
- 14:11broom sweeping the floor and. Regeneration.
- 14:14Regeneration is a miracle. It is the new birth.
- 14:17It is John chapter 3 or Jesus tells Nicodemus, a very moral,
- 14:20very swept man. You must be born again.
- 14:23It isn't fixing the old nature. It is receiving a completely new
- 14:26nature. It is the Holy Spirit entering
- 14:28the house, breathing living life into the dead soul, and taking
- 14:31up residence. Reformation puts clean clothes
- 14:33on a corpse. Regeneration raises the dead.
- 14:36I want to push back on this again just to play devil's
- 14:38advocate or maybe moralists advocate.
- 14:41Is it really fair to say that the person who reforms
- 14:44themselves is in danger? I mean, look at the world around
- 14:48us. We have plenty of people who
- 14:50aren't Christians. Maybe they're atheists or
- 14:52secular humanists who are very swept and ordered.
- 14:55Oh, absolutely. They're ethical, they're kind,
- 14:57they volunteer. Are we really saying their
- 15:00goodness is actually bad? We have to be so careful here.
- 15:04We are not saying their goodness is bad in a social sense.
- 15:07We are thankful for honest, kind neighbors.
- 15:11The Westminster Confession calls these works done by unregenerate
- 15:14men. It says they can be of good use
- 15:16to themselves and others. That is common grace.
- 15:19OK, so we aren't bashing kindness or civic duty.
- 15:21Not at all. But the confession continues.
- 15:24It says that because these works do not proceed from a heart
- 15:26purified by faith and are not done for the glory of God, they
- 15:29fall short of salvation. And here's the danger.
- 15:33The swept life gives you a false sense of spiritual safety.
- 15:37If you're a mess, if you are lying in a gutter, you know you
- 15:40need help. You know you're sick.
- 15:43But if your house is swept and ordered, you think you're
- 15:46healthy. You feel fine.
- 15:47You think I'm a good person. God must be happy with me.
- 15:51You don't feel your desperate need for a savior because you
- 15:54think you've already saved yourself from the symptoms the.
- 15:56Broom becomes your savior. Right.
- 15:59It is the fundamental error of moralism.
- 16:02Moralism says your problem is your behavior, so the solution
- 16:05is better behavior. The gospel says your problem is
- 16:08your deadness, so the only solution is resurrection.
- 16:11The source is also mentioned how this applies directly to
- 16:14legalism. Legalism is just religious
- 16:17moralism. It takes the law of God and
- 16:19treats it like a broom. I'll use the 10 commandments to
- 16:21sweep my house. But the Bible is clear,
- 16:24especially in Paul's letters. The law is a mirror.
- 16:27A mirror, not a broom. Yes, it is meant to show you the
- 16:30dirt on your face so that you run to Christ for cleansing.
- 16:33If you try to use the law to sweep, you just move the dust
- 16:36around. You never actually get clean,
- 16:38you just become proud of your sweeping technique.
- 16:40There was also a mention in the essays about liberal theology or
- 16:43the social Gospel fitting into this framework.
- 16:46It is the same error just applied on a societal level
- 16:49instead of an individual one. If a church stops preaching, the
- 16:54atonement stops preaching that we are sinners who need the
- 16:58blood of Jesus and just preaches let's make the world a better
- 17:00place. What are they really doing?
- 17:03They're sweeping the neighborhood.
- 17:04They're trying to sweep Society of poverty and injustice.
- 17:08And again, we should fight poverty.
- 17:09We should seek justice. But if you do it without the
- 17:11gospel of regeneration, you are just creating a swept and
- 17:15ordered vacuum. You create a secular void.
- 17:18And something will fill it. And history shows us that when a
- 17:20culture becomes secular and empty of God, it doesn't stay
- 17:23empty for long. Other ideologies, often 7 times
- 17:27worse, rush in to fill that spiritual gap.
- 17:29Which brings us to the moment in the story where the music
- 17:32changes. The demon is at the window.
- 17:34He sees the vacancy sign. He sees the welcome mat of self
- 17:38righteousness. And he doesn't go on alone.
- 17:40This is an interesting detail. He goes and finds seven other
- 17:44spirits more evil than himself. Why 7?
- 17:47Is that a literal number? It could be, but in Jewish
- 17:50literature, 7 is the number of completeness.
- 17:53It represents a perfect storm of evil, a total overwhelming
- 17:58domination. And the hierarchy is mentioned
- 18:00too. More evil than himself.
- 18:02Yes, that implies that the demonic realm isn't a flat
- 18:04structure. There are degrees of wickedness
- 18:07and power. He goes and gets the big guns.
- 18:10So this isn't just a relapse, this isn't the guy falling off
- 18:13the wagon and having a drink again.
- 18:15This is a full scale invasion. It is a hostile occupation.
- 18:18They enter and dwell there. That word means they settle
- 18:21down. They make themselves at home.
- 18:22This is permanent residence. And then Jesus delivers the
- 18:26final chilling verdict. The last state of that person is
- 18:29worse than the first. This is the part that really
- 18:31needs to land on us. Why is it worse?
- 18:33I mean, if the guy was a chaotic Sinner before and now he is a
- 18:36possessed, hardened, self-righteous vessel of
- 18:40darkness, surely the chaos was bad enough.
- 18:43The worst part? It's about reachability, isn't
- 18:45it? The possibility of repentance.
- 18:48It is about inoculation. Think about how vaccines work.
- 18:51You give someone a little bit of a dead or weakened virus so that
- 18:55their body builds up defenses against the real thing, right?
- 18:58You build antibodies. Moral reform without Christ is
- 19:01like a spiritual vaccine. You get a little bit of
- 19:03religion, you get a little bit of morality, you learn the
- 19:05language, you clean up the outside, and that small dose
- 19:08gives you antibodies against the true gospel.
- 19:11Wow. When someone comes and says you
- 19:13need to repent and trust Jesus, you say I'm already good.
- 19:16Look at my house. It's swept, it's ordered.
- 19:18I don't need what you're selling you.
- 19:19Are immune to the cure. You're hardened.
- 19:22Pride is a much thicker, higher wall than vices.
- 19:26A prostitute or a tax collector in Jesus's day knew they were
- 19:29outside the Kingdom. They had no illusions.
- 19:32But a Pharisee, A moralist, they think they own the Kingdom, so
- 19:37they never bothered to knock on the door.
- 19:38That is why it's worse. The path to repentance is
- 19:41blocked by their own self satisfaction.
- 19:44The sources bring up a historical example of this that
- 19:46is honestly terrifying. The generation Jesus was
- 19:50speaking to the Jews of the 1st century.
- 19:52Wow. We can't skip this.
- 19:53We said earlier that Israel was the swept house.
- 19:56They rejected Jesus. They wanted the Kingdom without
- 19:59the King. They wanted the order, the
- 20:01morality without the Messiah. So what happened?
- 20:048070. 40 years after Jesus spoke this very parable, the Roman
- 20:09armies besieged Jerusalem. And if you read the historian
- 20:12Josephus, his account sounds like a horror movie.
- 20:15It sounds like hell on earth. The city didn't just fall, it
- 20:19completely descended into madness.
- 20:21Josephus talks about the infighting.
- 20:23It wasn't just the Romans outside the walls, it was the
- 20:25Jewish factions inside slaughtering each other over
- 20:28scraps of food. There was cannibalism, mothers
- 20:30eating their own children. The temple was burned to the
- 20:33ground. Over 1,000,000 people died.
- 20:34It was absolute, unimaginable chaos.
- 20:37It's the seven spirits had entered the house.
- 20:39Exactly. Nation had been swept clean of
- 20:41its old idols, but because it was empty of Christ, the
- 20:43judgement that rushed in was 7 times worse than the Babylonian
- 20:46exile ever was. Babylon was a time out. 8070 was
- 20:50a funeral. It was the total destruction of
- 20:52that evil generation. That is incredibly heavy and if
- 20:56we stop there, this is the most depressing deep dive we have
- 21:00ever done. Don't clean your room or demons
- 21:03will eat you. If we stop there, we have missed
- 21:06the gospel because Jesus doesn't leave us without a solution.
- 21:09But the solution isn't found in the parable of the empty house
- 21:12itself, It's in the context right before it.
- 21:15A stronger man. Yes.
- 21:17In Matthew 12.29, just before this parable, Jesus gives a
- 21:20different illustration. He says how can someone enter a
- 21:23strong man's house and plunder his goods unless he first binds
- 21:26the strongman, Then indeed he may plunder his house.
- 21:31OK, let's cast the characters in that little story.
- 21:33Who is the strongman? In that mini parable, the
- 21:35strongman is Satan. He is holding the house, the
- 21:38human soul, captive. He's the current owner.
- 21:41And who is the one entering the house to plunder it?
- 21:43That is Jesus Christ, He is the stronger man.
- 21:46This is the hope. The solution to the empty house
- 21:49isn't to try harder to keep the door locked.
- 21:51You aren't strong enough if you sweep your own house.
- 21:53You are just a weak little human holding a broom against a legion
- 21:57of demons. You will lose every single time.
- 21:59You need a bouncer. You need an owner.
- 22:02You need someone stronger than the enemy to not just visit, but
- 22:06to move in and take over completely.
- 22:08This brings us right to the core Reformed doctrine of union with
- 22:12Christ. This is everything.
- 22:13Salvation isn't a partnership. It isn't Jesus handing you a mop
- 22:17in a bucket and saying let's clean this place up together.
- 22:20It is a hostile takeover in the best sense of the word.
- 22:23Paul says in First Corinthians 6.1920.
- 22:26You are not your own. You were bought with a price.
- 22:31God, that implies a transfer of title, a change of ownership.
- 22:34Exactly when you are born again by the Spirit, the title deed of
- 22:38your soul changes hands. You no longer belong to
- 22:40yourself, and you certainly don't belong to the devil, you
- 22:42belong to Christ. So now imagine the scenario
- 22:45again. The demon leaves it, wanders in
- 22:47the waterless places. It comes back and says I will
- 22:49return to my house. What the hell isn't empty
- 22:52anymore? It's not vacant.
- 22:53No, it knocks on the door and the stronger man opens it and
- 22:57the stronger man says this isn't your house, it's mine.
- 23:00I bought it with my own blood. Get lost.
- 23:02And the demon has to go. It has no claim.
- 23:04He has no choice. The power of the demon is broken
- 23:08not by our sweeping, but by Christ's dwelling.
- 23:11I love that phrase from Thomas Chalmers that was in the notes.
- 23:14The expulsive power of a new affection.
- 23:17It's a classic sermon, and it fits perfectly here.
- 23:20Chalmers argued that the human heart hates a vacuum.
- 23:24You cannot destroy a love for sin just by saying no to it.
- 23:26With your willpower, that, well, runs dry.
- 23:29You have to displace that love with a greater, more beautiful
- 23:32love. You can't just scrape the
- 23:34darkness out of a room, you have to turn on the light.
- 23:37Right. If a little boy has a sharp
- 23:39knife in his hand, and he loves that knife, you can't just yell
- 23:41at him to drop it. He'll hold on tighter.
- 23:43But if you offer him a shiny, beautiful new toy, something
- 23:47that far better, he will drop the knife in an instant to grab
- 23:50the better thing. That is the explosive power.
- 23:52When you see the beauty and glory of Jesus, his grace, His
- 23:56love, His sacrifice, the love of sin is pushed out.
- 23:58It's expelled by the filling of something better.
- 24:01So sanctification, the process of actually getting clean,
- 24:04doesn't happen before Jesus moves in so that the house is
- 24:07presentable. It happens because he moved in.
- 24:10That is the crucial order. Moralism says clean up so God
- 24:13will accept you. The Gospel says God has accepted
- 24:16you in Christ despite your mess. Now let's clean up together.
- 24:20He moves in amidst the chaos. He buys the house while it's
- 24:23still dirty, and then he begins the lifelong renovation project.
- 24:28That is a huge relief because I think a lot of us, even as
- 24:32Christians, can fall into the trap of feeling like we have to
- 24:36get everything ordered before we can really call ourselves
- 24:39Christians or before God will be pleased with us.
- 24:41And that is a lie from the pit. If you wait until you're clean
- 24:44to come to Christ, you will never come.
- 24:46You come as you are, messy, chaotic, possessed by sin, and
- 24:51he binds the strongman and takes over.
- 24:54OK, let's try to land this plane with some direct application.
- 24:56We have different kinds of people listening to this.
- 24:58I want to start with the moralist, the person who
- 25:00listened to the first half of this deep dive and got really
- 25:03uncomfortable. Maybe they're thinking I'm a
- 25:06good person, I go to church, I vote the right way.
- 25:09I don't have a criminal record. Are you telling me I'm in
- 25:11danger? I would say to that person with
- 25:13all the love in my heart, be honest with yourself.
- 25:15Where is your confidence? If you were standing before God
- 25:18today and he were to ask why should I let you into my heaven,
- 25:23what would you offer him? Would you offer him your
- 25:26sweeping? Look, Lord, I didn't drink and I
- 25:28was polite and I recycled. Would you point to your clean
- 25:31house, or would you cling to Christ alone?
- 25:36It's the broom versus the builder.
- 25:37If your confidence is in your own order, your house is empty,
- 25:40and an empty house is a trap waiting to spring.
- 25:43You're standing on the precipice of a worse state.
- 25:46The call for you is to stop trusting your own goodness.
- 25:48It's a flingsy shield. Repent of your righteousness,
- 25:52which is a weird thing to say, but we need to repent of our
- 25:54self righteousness just as much as our sins and flee to the
- 25:57stronger man. Now what about the other
- 25:59listener, the one who is the weary St. the believer who loves
- 26:03Jesus but is really struggling. They're fighting addiction,
- 26:06they're fighting anger. And they hear this parable and
- 26:09they think, Oh no, I sinned yesterday.
- 26:10Is my house empty? Did the demon come back?
- 26:13I am so glad you asked that we must must distinguish between
- 26:17the presence of sin and the dominion of sin.
- 26:20If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, sin might still be
- 26:23present in your house. It might be hiding in the
- 26:25closets, it might be dirt you keep finding under the rug, but
- 26:29it does not hold the title deed. So the stronger man is still the
- 26:32owner, even if the house is messy.
- 26:34Absolutely. In fact, the struggle is proof
- 26:36of life. Dead people don't fight.
- 26:39An empty house is quiet. If you are grieving over your
- 26:42sin, if you are wrestling with it, if you hate it, that is the
- 26:45Holy Spirit fighting within you. That is the proof the house is
- 26:48occupied. A house at war is alive.
- 26:51That's a great way to put it. The Westminster Confession
- 26:53reminds us that this war between the flesh and the Spirit is
- 26:56continual. It lasts our whole life.
- 26:58But it also assures us that the Spirit prevails.
- 27:01You are safe not because you are perfect, but because you are
- 27:04possessed by God. So for that person, the answer
- 27:07isn't try harder to sweep. No, the answer is get filled.
- 27:10How do we? Do that practically.
- 27:12We don't want to leave people with a vague except how do we
- 27:15fill the house daily? We use the means of grace.
- 27:19God hasn't hidden the spiritual food.
- 27:21He has put it right on the table for us.
- 27:23First, the Word. You have to be in Scripture, not
- 27:27just reading for rules or for information, but to see Christ
- 27:32fill your mind with His truth. So there's no room for lies.
- 27:34OK. Second, prayer.
- 27:37Prayer is a constant conversation.
- 27:39It's acknowledging our dependence.
- 27:40It's opening the door to the living room of your heart every
- 27:43morning and saying, Lord, fill this room today.
- 27:46Third, the sacraments, baptism and the Lord's Supper.
- 27:50These are visible words God gives us to nourish our faith.
- 27:53And community. And finally, the fellowship of
- 27:56the Saints. You need to be under Christ
- 27:58centered preaching. Avoid the therapeutic gospel.
- 28:01That just gives you 7 tips for sweeping.
- 28:03Better find preaching that relentlessly points you to the
- 28:06finished work of Jesus. It's all about crowding out the
- 28:08darkness. That is the strategy.
- 28:10You don't focus on the darkness, you focus on the light.
- 28:13The more of Christ you have in your mind and in your
- 28:15affections, the less room there is for the world, the flesh, and
- 28:18the devil. It really brings us back to that
- 28:20idea of neutrality. I think that's the biggest take
- 28:23away for me from this whole deep dive.
- 28:25There is no Switzerland in the spiritual world.
- 28:28Neutrality is a myth. You are not a neutral container
- 28:31waiting to be filled. You are being filled with
- 28:33something every single day. If you aren't actively,
- 28:37intentionally filling your soul with the glory of God, you are
- 28:41by default hanging a vacancy sign in the window and the enemy
- 28:45knows how to read. So the goal isn't a clean life,
- 28:48the goal is a filled life. A filled life will become clean
- 28:51eventually by the power of the Spirit, but a clean life that is
- 28:55empty will become hell. That is the warning of Jesus.
- 28:58Well, on that note, we have given you a lot to chew on.
- 29:01Put down the broom and look for the stronger man.
- 29:03I am a. Thanks for joining us on this
- 29:05deep dive. This has been reformed thinking.
- 29:07We will see you next time.
