- 0:17to build stronger relationships and enhance your brand's impact.
- 0:30Where your head was at when you decided to even attempt
- 0:35to bring a podcast into the B2B space,
- 0:37because now it seems a little bit more commonplace,
- 0:39but you still see people that say,
- 0:40well, how do we measure it?
- 0:42Is it worth the time, the hours invested?
- 0:46Why did you think to do this?
- 0:47Why did you think that Authenticity was important in B2B marketing
- 0:51and podcasting was the way to capture that?
- 0:53Well, Authenticity has always been the way forward.
- 0:58The companies that are more authentic with their brands
- 1:01are the ones that when the loyal audience is,
- 1:03right? It's always been that way.
- 1:06Tim Copp, legendary CMO, is on CEO of Terminus,
- 1:10said, I think he was the first one I would say it anyway.
- 1:13You know, B2B, B2C, it's all HD, just all human to human, right?
- 1:18And so before podcasts and before video content was being used
- 1:23the way that it is now, still, I mean, even in written content
- 1:26and the way that we were doing our onesits,
- 1:27that brands are embracing social media,
- 1:29those that were more authentic and less robotic, wind, right?
- 1:34Those are the ones that we like to consume the content from.
- 1:36And so specifically, how did podcasts come to play for me
- 1:41and into my strategy?
- 1:42I was a consumer of podcast content.
- 1:45I became the proud owner of a commute back in 2014, 2015.
- 1:53A lot of the commute that I had had in a while,
- 1:55where I was driving and I just kind of woke up
- 1:58to the idea of podcasts.
- 2:00Like instead of just a three, I'm milson's and podcasts.
- 2:02And for me, I really enjoyed, you know,
- 2:07and the business as well as about marketing and leadership
- 2:09and got a lot out of those.
- 2:10And I found that I would have this 45 minute commute
- 2:13or Park McCaroid walking the office.
- 2:15And then I would take some notes down
- 2:17and I would start to apply those things that I just learned.
- 2:20I would be like, okay, I'm going to use this with my team today
- 2:22or here's this cool idea that I'm going to talk to
- 2:24my head of demand, Jen, about see if we can work
- 2:26then in the strategy.
- 2:28And so be somebody who had really, really benefited
- 2:32from podcasts for a while.
- 2:35I was like, this is something that we should do.
- 2:37Our audience would really benefit from this.
- 2:40And like I said, we had been having conversations already.
- 2:42We were just recording them on our phones
- 2:44or just taking notes with internal and external thought leaders.
- 2:47It was like, this is a no brainer.
- 2:49Why don't we capture these conversations
- 2:51in a slightly more sophisticated way
- 2:53and share them directly with our audience
- 2:55and then also see how else we can use them.
- 2:58And a follow up to that, because I actually think
- 3:01this is, as I researched past it,
- 3:03I think this is actually the problem you're solving for.
- 3:05But what would you say to marketing leaders
- 3:09who are saying, well, how do we measure it?
- 3:10How do we show the impact on revenue
- 3:14on our funnel and our lead?
- 3:16So what's your point to that?
- 3:19Been there.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:20So in doing that, once we get rolling with our podcast,
- 3:24then we were doing some video work too.
- 3:26And I was lucky enough that our CEO.
- 3:30So I rolled up to the CMO, but even our CEO
- 3:32would come and talk to me like, this is so great.
- 3:34I love that you're doing this.
- 3:34He was a big fan and he would listen every week.
- 3:37So I had his buy-in as a fan.
- 3:40But then as the CEO, he was like, what's it doing for the business?
- 3:43Like, I can't, you know, anticipating that I was going to say,
- 3:46well, it drove this lead me, brought in this customer.
- 3:48And I was like, I don't know, brand awareness.
- 3:52And hey, we achieved $10,000 downloads.
- 3:54And he was like, yeah, what does that mean?
- 3:55I was like, I don't know.
- 3:56And so that was really frustrating to me.
- 3:58So as we set out to build casted,
- 4:01that's something that's been really important from day one
- 4:03and that we've been working on all along, saying, okay,
- 4:07really all of the tools, tools and point solutions
- 4:10and little one-off things here and there
- 4:13that exist around podcasting today
- 4:15are made for podcast first.
- 4:17Somebody who is creating a show to build an audience
- 4:20that they can quantify and monetize by selling ads.
- 4:24That's great. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 4:26But that's not why a B2B and enterprise marketing team
- 4:29would do a show.
- 4:30They, you know, sales force, I'm assuming, they're a customer of ours,
- 4:33but I'm assuming that they're not doing a podcast to make more money.
- 4:35That's that's not a need that they have.
- 4:38They need to, they want to engage their audience
- 4:41and be seen as the thought leaders in the space
- 4:43and to generate raving fans and build out nice funnels, right?
- 4:47So you can't measure that with number of downloads.
- 4:50They just, the two don't, they don't line up.
- 4:53So really what you need to be looking at is engagement,
- 4:56just like you do with the rest of your content.
- 4:58How are people consuming your podcast and audio content
- 5:02and all related content that comes out of that?
- 5:03How are they consuming it?
- 5:04How are they engaging with it?
- 5:06Is your audience growing over time?
- 5:08Are people coming back?
- 5:09What are people doing after they listen?
- 5:11What parts of the conversations that you're sharing?
- 5:13Are they listening to?
- 5:15Are they going on and engaging with some of your additional content?
- 5:18Are they requesting a demo down the line?
- 5:22Probably not as a direct result of listening to that one,
- 5:24that one episode,
- 5:26but like, are they starting to build a relationship?
- 5:29And so as we were building casted,
- 5:30we said, how can we start to track that?
- 5:32How can we show the market or what breadcrumbs are being dropped
- 5:35by people in their audience as they start to raise their hand?
- 5:37How can we, how can we bridge the gap between sales and marketing?
- 5:40It's something that you know a lot about.
- 5:41How can we not create content?
- 5:44How can we help marketers go beyond creating content for content
- 5:48sake or being viewed as creating content for content sake
- 5:52to say, no, the content that we're creating
- 5:53is not only building our audience and engineering engagement,
- 5:56but it's also impacting revenue, influencing pipeline.
- 6:01Hey, salespeople, when you use this content,
- 6:03when you use this clip, it will help your conversation in this way.
- 6:07And so that's the information that we try to pass back in the platform.
- 6:11And then by integrating with CRM,
- 6:13we also like append the information already there
- 6:17that salespeople are adding to those customer contacts
- 6:20and the timelines and the information you have about your contacts
- 6:23by saying, hey, these people are also engaging with the content in this way.
- 6:27Might be a good opportunity to reach out
- 6:28or might be a good opportunity to see
- 6:30how that's impacting those relationships over time.
- 6:33And that's what casted is doing.
- 6:36And I don't, you know, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 6:37but I don't think that anything like this
- 6:39focused on be-to-be podcasting exists.
- 6:42You forecast it.
- 6:43Yeah, we started before we got started.
- 6:46That's why I'm creative a bit, is I either looked.
- 6:48I tried to find it and then said, okay, yes, we're going to have to go build it.
- 6:52So that's an entrepreneurial lesson,
- 6:55in and of itself, right?
- 6:57Like you're solving that need that you found in your own industry and your own life.
- 7:00Okay, so for businesses who say, okay,
- 7:04it makes sense to have a podcast if I have the bandwidth to do it.
- 7:08What businesses would you say should start down this path?
- 7:12Is there a certain revenue threshold that you should be probably, you know,
- 7:15we're 10 million ARR or annual current revenue?
- 7:18Like are we 15 million?
- 7:19Or is something you just start right away as a founder CEO?
- 7:23Yeah, and I'll zoom out from that a little bit to answer your question.
- 7:26So the short answer is, I think everybody should be doing it.
- 7:30Because if you are doing what'll go doing content, right?
- 7:35Most companies are, there's a very, very small, small number of companies that might not really
- 7:40be focused on content for one reason or another, especially speaking of B2B, right?
- 7:46But if you are, if you are at all concerned about or prioritizing thought leadership
- 7:52and content marketing at all, having a podcast and a show, having audio and video content
- 7:58is a really, really great place to start.
- 8:01And yes, there are some companies that can and do or could or should do really,
- 8:07really high end, high production, high cost, wired bandwidth content.
- 8:14And then there's others that are finding scrapier ways to do it.
- 8:16And what matters most is that you're putting your audience first, right?
- 8:21And that you're saying, how can we really serve them?
- 8:24And again, that starts with the conversation with somebody that they're going to want to hear
- 8:27from that has insights and expertise and perspectives that are going to be interesting
- 8:31to the audience. So when you know your audience, go find people that are going to be great resources
- 8:37to them and great speakers to them and talk to them. I'm good conversation and then share it.
- 8:41And so what I would also say is that if you're thinking about, hey, should we do a podcast?
- 8:47It's its own standalone thing. You're kind of thinking about it the wrong way.
- 8:52And a lot of people are in the events the way that a lot of people are seeing it today.
- 8:57The ones that are really succeeding, though, and what I really advocate for is looking at it,
- 9:01not as just doing a podcast over here on the side, but having conversations,
- 9:06putting those at the very center of your entire marketing strategy and saying, okay,
- 9:11I'm going to go ask some conversations. I'm going to create some audio and or video content
- 9:15around that. And then from there, I'm going to pull all the other stuff that I'm
- 9:19going to do. I'm going to pull blog posts out of that. I'm going to take some of those unique
- 9:22insights from people that I've talked to and turn those insights into a really engaging blog post.
- 9:28And some really cool interesting posts for social media. I'm going to get it to the hands of my
- 9:34sales team so that they can use the clips and clips and insights and fun anecdotes and metrics
- 9:41that are shared on my show so that they can have better conversations and move things on
- 9:47the process faster. So when you look at it, not as one more thing to do, but like pulling
- 9:52something into the center and making everything much more efficient, it really works for even being
- 9:58an team that's already doing content hemp retool their approach.
- 10:04And I'll ask you something else because you probably come up with this or you probably had to
- 10:07deal with this with working with different founders as well as larger organizations.
- 10:12Does it make more sense for the podcast to be positioned as something from an executive
- 10:17or a founder or from the brand? Gosh, I think really it's, you know, and I think then there's also,
- 10:25I don't see, there's, I know it's not, it's not an easy answer, but I just, you know, I see like,
- 10:29I see both, I see both sides and I'm just not sure which one works better for a B to B context.
- 10:34Yeah, I mean, I think, I think something that comes that's very clear that it's from the brand,
- 10:41right? Now you can leverage the personal brand of the host, the individuals that
- 10:47face and the voice of the show, but when it's really clear that this is, it's like your blog,
- 10:53right? I mean, does it make more sense to have a blog that's, you know, Scott's blog or that
- 10:59really represents the brand? I mean, if you want it to come back to the brand, you want people to
- 11:02identify with the company and the product sources that you provide, that just makes sense to make
- 11:07sure that it's closely related. And it's not always necessarily about an executive, like sometimes
- 11:11when we've seen, we've seen this absolutely that it's a marketing manager or it's an engineer or
- 11:17it's salesperson. One of our companies left their podcast started when two salespeople, two
- 11:22kind executives said he, we think this would be really helpful to help with our sales processes
- 11:27because we work with you. Can we, can we work together on this? And it's, they worked out really well.
- 11:32Yeah, yeah, no, I've seen, I've seen both and I didn't know that example, but I've seen some
- 11:37brands do, but then I see, I look at, for example, the opposite side where you, you have all these
- 11:41brands, then you have like a Neil Patel type podcast where it's, he drives leads for his own
- 11:46business, but it's like mostly, mostly him, but I guess you're right, it does, it does depend on,
- 11:50on, you know, a lot of circumstances. Okay, you're starting a B2B podcast. What would be your
- 11:58checklist of, you mentioned this a few times, like you want to interview people that are having
- 12:03relevant discussions that could be tailored towards your target audience, but just like some
- 12:07things to think about when you're launching a podcast, some somebody who has done probably,
- 12:12quite a few with them. And then follow up, I don't like doing two bests at once, but I'll,
- 12:16I'll let you know where I want to go. So I want people to listen to this. I want them to understand
- 12:20how to start a podcast if they haven't started it yet, but then I also want people who have a
- 12:24podcast where it's not successful in a B2B space or even otherwise, how they can grow a podcast
- 12:29after they've made sure that they have like those, those benchmarks or those, you know,
- 12:33those core components. For sure. I think it's really easy. And this is, this isn't any strategy.
- 12:39This isn't any marketing campaign. This isn't any content. It's, it's easy to overlook some
- 12:45of the fundamentals, right? So anywhere you're starting out or you're taking your kind of zooming
- 12:50out from a show you already have or looking at another show. Remember to check every once in a
- 12:55while, who are you doing it for? Who is your audience? Is it all marketers in the whole entire
- 13:00world? That seems like a pretty large audience, but okay, maybe, or is it, is it some subset?
- 13:06Is it, you know, content marketers at high growth B2B SaaS companies? Like that's very different
- 13:11than all marketers in the entire planet. So be really, make sure it's really front of mind,
- 13:18like who you're doing it for because that and then why you're doing it, right? So are you
- 13:23jumping leads? Are you jumping in? Brand awareness? Are you trying to raise the profile of one of
- 13:27your executives in your company for one reason or another? Are you trying to raise funds?
- 13:33Knowing who it's for and why you're doing it. That, that paves the path for everything else.
- 13:38That gets into who are you going to have on the show? Not hard, typically, to find people who
- 13:44want to be on the show, right? Anyone. I mean, anyone could start podcasts today and get 15 guests
- 13:50tomorrow. Now, would they be the right guests for your audience? Probably not.
- 13:54They'd be all over the place. You have an author, you'd have a, you know, small business owner,
- 13:58you'd have, you know, an investor, you know, you'd have all kinds of people. It gets a little bit
- 14:02harder. We're challenging when you know really who it's for and how you're doing it to really
- 14:08narrow in. Okay, then therefore, who we're going to have the show, what are we going to talk about?
- 14:12Then you get into show format. So is the show format designed to appeal to who it's for? You know,
- 14:24executives, just stereotypically speaking, and this is where you want to do some check-ins and see
- 14:28how things are going, but executives probably have less time to listen to a really long show.
- 14:32So I want to keep it shorter and sweeter, whereas somebody who's a developer, perhaps,
- 14:37and being very stereotypical, but like maybe the type of show that you're doing is for someone
- 14:41who's going to be listening while they're working, therefore, wants to go deeper and listen longer,
- 14:44right? So there is no one-size-fits-all format. There is no, you know, one-size-fits-all approach.
- 14:50You really, really need to get in and understand for you're doing the show for why you're doing it
- 14:54and therefore it's healing the rest of it around it. That makes sense. The advice. Now, if you're trying
- 15:00to grow a show, like you said, you want raving fans, but I'm assuming a lot of businesses,
- 15:06when they launch a show, they're just pushing it out against their existing customer,
- 15:11you know, their customer base. How do you purposefully grow a show so that it can add
- 15:19more customers and not just give the existing customers more content?
- 15:23Sure. So, yeah, then all those into why you're doing it, right? So that's something that you want
- 15:27to, you're trying to grow your audience. So this was really important to start with the conversation
- 15:33and ring it out. The whole amplified marketing person I'm talking about. So if you,
- 15:38if you and I just have this conversation, you're turned into a show and just put it on a shelf
- 15:42and that's it, some people would see it, some people would listen to it and tune in, but if you
- 15:48pull clips from that and you use that on social media, then you have your, and there truly are
- 15:53rich. It's not just like, hey, listen to our show, but like you're pulling out clips that are
- 15:56really engaging and you're using audio, you're going to see your healing to like the visual
- 16:02senses of people as they're scrolling through social media, then you're going to attract more
- 16:05from your social network and those people social networks and those people social networks
- 16:10to come in and listen to your content. And then when they're there, give them more to dig into,
- 16:15right? So give them ways to listen and consume it without having to sit to the whole thing,
- 16:19give them clips to listen to, give them ways to share. Also, you know, leverage your blog and as
- 16:25you're publishing your blog, if you have clips embedded in the blog, then people are going to come
- 16:31from that and as you're sharing your blog, then you're also inadvertently sharing your podcast.
- 16:36So you can see how this all connects and it all works together where when you share one thing
- 16:41with one network or one audience, it kind of opens up an entire sphere of more. Also, as you bring
- 16:49people on to your show, if you're bringing people that really are going to be valuable, they can be
- 16:53internal and external, when you have experts, like go talk to an expert that doesn't have to be
- 16:57somebody who wrote the bestselling book, you know, it could be you're an engineer in on your team,
- 17:02it can be an intern, depending on what your, who your audience is and why you're doing the show,
- 17:07somebody who could be interesting to your audience could be, could be anyone.
- 17:10And when you bring them in and you make it really, really easy for them to share the show and
- 17:15to share clips of the show and make it super easy, then you're in it obviously to tap into their
- 17:21network as well. Thanks for tuning in. If you found this valuable, don't forget to hit that
