- 0:12Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to the Good to Know Sacramento version
- 0:16Speaker 1: of the Laughs Unlimited podcast. We are, I'm Jennifer, obviously,
- 0:20Speaker 1: owner of Laughs Unlimited. We are here today with Mary Upchurch. Hello, Mary.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hello, Mary.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Hello. Hi, Jenny. How are you?
- 0:28Speaker 1: I'm good. How are you doing? I'm so good.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I'm so happy to talk to you.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I know. I know. We've known each other for quite
- 0:36Speaker 1: a few years now. It's so funny because I always
- 0:39Speaker 1: think in terms of like, how old was Jalyn when
- 0:41Speaker 1: I met you? I know.
- 0:45Speaker 3: This many Jalyns and then now we're at this many Jalyns.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I know now she's, now she's so old. She's sharing clothes.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Like thanks for the dresses. Cause I love, I always love,
- 0:56Speaker 1: look at your style. It's great. Bright and colorful. And she's,
- 1:00Speaker 1: she wears them all the time.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I love clothes in general. And I do love this
- 1:09Speaker 4: brand called New Works. They make really fun, unique prints.
- 1:12Speaker 4: They're limited edition. And sometimes when I'm kind of done
- 1:15Speaker 4: wearing them, or if I've been photographed or worn them
- 1:17Speaker 4: a couple of times, I, you know, I don't need
- 1:19Speaker 4: them anymore.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Not to sound wasteful, but like if I can find.
- 1:23Speaker 4: A person who like likes it as much as me,
- 1:26Speaker 4: it brings me so much joy to like, please give
- 1:28Speaker 4: this a good.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And she, she loves it. I'm telling you, she wears
- 1:31Speaker 1: specifically the, that one that we've talked about, she wears
- 1:35Speaker 1: all the time. It has like the jagged stripes and yeah, they're,
- 1:38Speaker 1: they're perfect. It's they're great. Cause it's, they're very unique
- 1:42Speaker 1: and you know, it takes a unique person. She's unique.
- 1:44Speaker 1: You're unique. I love it.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know it's not something you got at
- 1:49Speaker 4: like Target or Old Navy like that everybody has.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Like it is kind of special.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Right, right. And thanks to, you know, somebody like you
- 1:56Speaker 1: because if it was up to me, I have no style.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You know, I'm a black on black kind of girl.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So it takes somebody very cool like you to introduce
- 2:05Speaker 1: her to fun stuff like that.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Oh, that is so nice.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Thank you. Yeah, so you're based out of Vegas now?
- 2:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm celebrating my third year here in Vegas.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, loving it, getting better, having fun, except for the heat, obviously.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Well, I came from Phoenix, so it's almost a little
- 2:29Speaker 4: bit of a break of the heat. It's a little
- 2:31Speaker 4: bit cooler, not much. But yeah, I felt like home
- 2:34Speaker 4: here from just as soon as.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I moved here. Because I had been coming to Vegas
- 2:39Speaker 3: to do comedy for a couple of years, and I
- 2:41Speaker 3: was just like finding ways to get here more often.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So when I got here, I was like, yeah, this
- 2:46Speaker 3: feels like home. And Vegas really.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Feels like a mixture of like Orange County, California and Phoenix.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Like if you blended those two, I think that's kind
- 2:55Speaker 3: of Vegas.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Like when you take the best parts of a
- 2:58Speaker 1: couple of places and throw them together, there's Vegas for you, huh?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Do you get out to, I know you do shows
- 3:06Speaker 1: a lot. Do you get out to shows much? Do
- 3:08Speaker 1: you see like, Not necessarily comedy, but Vegas is all
- 3:12Speaker 1: about entertainment. Do you ever go?
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Do you?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yes. It is my favorite thing to do.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I love that.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I saw Magic Mike for the second time this weekend.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It is such a good show.
- 3:29Speaker 4: And I know you're thinking, oh, Mary, you're just there
- 3:31Speaker 4: for the dudes and the body.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And yes, that's true.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But.
- 3:36Speaker 3: It's art, though. The dancing is so good.
- 3:40Speaker 4: If you've ever watched that show, So You Think You
- 3:42Speaker 4: Could Dance, I feel like it's like that, like really
- 3:44Speaker 4: good modern dance, like talented people.
- 3:48Speaker 3: There's a little bit of acrobat. It's not just a
- 3:50Speaker 3: male review. It's like a show show.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So that's one of my favorites.
- 3:54Speaker 4: And then everybody comes here. I saw Chelsea Handler at
- 3:57Speaker 4: the Cosmopolitan. And I've seen the Black Crows a couple times.
- 4:03Speaker 4: So it's so fun to go to concerts and different shows. Oh,
- 4:06Speaker 4: Absinthe is my favorite show.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Okay. The last show in Vegas, I went and saw Six.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Have you seen that? The musical?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Oh, I want to see that.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It's so great. I think you would love it.
- 4:22Speaker 4: It was, that was touring right when I moved here.
- 4:24Speaker 4: And it's like the six wives of Henry VIII.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I want to see it.
- 4:29Speaker 1: It's like each of their stories. And it's like, it's,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it starts out really, really dramatic. It's like beheaded. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Because like two of his wives got beheaded. It's crazy. Yeah. Yes.
- 4:44Speaker 3: What a jerk.
- 4:45Speaker 1: The reason I found out about that musical is because
- 4:49Speaker 1: just like her clothes, Jalyn has an eclectic taste in music.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And I always let her pick music, too. So we
- 4:55Speaker 1: kind of do this combination. And I was listening to
- 4:58Speaker 1: a song because I'm very lyric based. And I was like,
- 5:02Speaker 1: wait a minute. This song is about Anne Boleyn. What
- 5:06Speaker 1: are you listening to? Like it talks about her being
- 5:09Speaker 1: beheaded and, you know, all this. And I was like,
- 5:11Speaker 1: what are you listening to? And so then we looked
- 5:15Speaker 1: it up and she didn't even realize that it was
- 5:17Speaker 1: part of a musical or, you know, like what the
- 5:19Speaker 1: musical was about. And then we started from the beginning
- 5:22Speaker 1: because obviously it tells a story and we listened to
- 5:24Speaker 1: the whole thing and it was great. And I actually
- 5:27Speaker 1: really enjoyed seeing that. It was it's great. It's an
- 5:31Speaker 1: all female lineup. It's all female band. And, you know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: I'm not a I say I'm not a feminist, but
- 5:39Speaker 1: I'm not. I don't, I don't seek it out, but
- 5:42Speaker 1: I love when it's done well. You know what I'm saying?
- 5:46Speaker 3: Hold on for one second. My connection is, or something
- 5:54Speaker 3: is like a little spotty. I got every other word.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Oh, which part? Sorry. Are you back?
- 6:04Speaker 3: Well, No, I get that, though. You know, you're listening
- 6:07Speaker 3: to a song. You're like, wait a second. This is
- 6:09Speaker 3: a historical pop song. What's going on here?
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 3: That's a fun way to really get into theater.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, that's how I was introduced to Hamilton, too.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Oh, Mary is going to start touring. And it's going
- 6:23Speaker 3: to play here at the Spitz Center, which is I
- 6:25Speaker 3: live right.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Next door to it.
- 6:26Speaker 3: So I'm looking forward to that one, too.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Nice. I've never even heard of that one. I'll have
- 6:31Speaker 1: to look it up.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Look it up.
- 6:34Speaker 4: It's campy and fun and it's like such a big hit.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And they use different stars like Bob the Drag Queen
- 6:40Speaker 4: and it's by Cole Escola. And they use different people
- 6:43Speaker 4: to play the Mary Todd Lincoln role.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Okay, okay. I was trying to think if there's any
- 6:50Speaker 1: funny stories of you at Laughs Unlimited. I mean, we
- 6:53Speaker 1: have funny stories in general, but do you have anything
- 6:57Speaker 1: off the top? Um.
- 7:00Speaker 4: You know, one of my favorite memories, though, with Laughs
- 7:04Speaker 4: Unlimited was the first year of the Sacktown Comedy Get
- 7:07Speaker 4: Down Festival.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And it was kind of like early post-COVID.
- 7:13Speaker 4: And a lot of us were staying at that beautiful
- 7:16Speaker 4: haunted house.
- 7:18Speaker 1: The hostel. The hostel.
- 7:20Speaker 3: The hostel.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And it was beautiful. Victorian. I still think about it.
- 7:27Speaker 3: That's the haunting. It stays with you up here. I
- 7:30Speaker 3: think about that house all the time. And again, it
- 7:34Speaker 3: was gorgeous, but it was so creepy. And I couldn't sleep.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think Jack Jr., he showed up. He had a
- 7:41Speaker 3: room there and was like, nope.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And he went down to the holiday inn. Yes, that
- 7:46Speaker 1: is what happened. Yeah, it was cool, though, because they
- 7:49Speaker 1: couldn't be open as a hostel because it was so
- 7:52Speaker 1: close post-COVID. So they were renting it out like BRBO style.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So it's not like we could ever rent it again.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But at the time it was, yeah, it was awesome.
- 8:04Speaker 1: It was a fun time. Oh, she froze.
- 8:11Speaker 4: One of the times too, when I was featuring for
- 8:14Speaker 4: Big Irish J, I got on stage and realized, or
- 8:18Speaker 4: I think I realized it when I got dressed or whatever.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I brought two different black shoes. Like it was like
- 8:23Speaker 4: the same type of shoe, but they were different, different heights.
- 8:27Speaker 4: And I was on stage hoping nobody would notice, but
- 8:30Speaker 4: there was a girl in the front row and I
- 8:32Speaker 4: could see her looking at my feet like this.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And I was like, don't look.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah. That's hilarious. That's funny.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I'll never make that mistake again.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Well, I mean, yeah. It's kind of different. Like, if
- 8:48Speaker 1: it was two socks, you could at least, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: fake it to make it. But two shoes, that's harder
- 8:53Speaker 1: to get by with.
- 8:54Speaker 4: They were both black strappy kind of heels, but one
- 8:58Speaker 4: was higher and one was a platform.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So I was like.
- 9:03Speaker 1: That's so funny. And did you even think about coming
- 9:05Speaker 1: out on stage just barefoot and just be like, you
- 9:07Speaker 1: know what? I'm in touch with the earth this time.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I would never.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Which is funny. I would wear two different shoes, but
- 9:16Speaker 1: I would never come out barefoot.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I need a little height. I'm short. I'm like stocky,
- 9:23Speaker 3: I guess. I don't know.
- 9:24Speaker 4: So I wear heels to give me a little elongated look,
- 9:27Speaker 4: you know.
- 9:29Speaker 1: See, that's a short girl problem. I never would have
- 9:31Speaker 1: thought about that ever.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 9:34Speaker 3: You've never worried about that.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Never.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Jenny, how does it feel to be able to see
- 9:38Speaker 3: every concert you've ever been to or every baseball game
- 9:41Speaker 3: you've ever played?
- 9:43Speaker 1: It's very nice. I have no complaints whatsoever.
- 9:46Speaker 3: People behind you, not so much.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, people behind me. Well, you know, tall people matter too.
- 9:51Speaker 1: That's what I say. You do. You do. I love
- 9:54Speaker 1: when I have customers come who are taller and they'll
- 9:59Speaker 1: be like, you know, can I not sit in the
- 10:01Speaker 1: front row? Cause I'm tall. And I always tell them,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I go, forget that tall power. You know, you sit
- 10:06Speaker 1: where you want. You forget these short people. You don't
- 10:08Speaker 1: have to acquiesce to them and just really talk them
- 10:12Speaker 1: up at the door.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Tall people get so much though.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Tall people have so much privilege. Like, um, Did you know, like,
- 10:20Speaker 4: a huge majority of CEOs in America are over six
- 10:23Speaker 4: feet tall? But a very small, like, population of men
- 10:30Speaker 4: are actually six feet tall. I'm not saying that quote
- 10:33Speaker 4: the right way, but you get the idea. Like, we
- 10:36Speaker 4: just assume you're a great leader. You know, you're a.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Well, I was invited to a tall club once. There's
- 10:43Speaker 1: a Sacramento tall club. And I was invited to it.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And they... And like they have the heights printed on
- 10:52Speaker 1: their business card. And it's like to it for a female,
- 10:57Speaker 1: you had to be like over five, seven. And for
- 11:00Speaker 1: the guys, you had to be over five, 10. And
- 11:02Speaker 1: I was like, that's not that tall. Cause I'm six too. Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 1: And I think that was the first time. I mean,
- 11:10Speaker 1: obviously being the tallest in most rooms all the time
- 11:14Speaker 1: told me something, but it was the first time that
- 11:16Speaker 1: I was like, wait, what's the average height for a man?
- 11:21Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Do people use that as like a dating thing or
- 11:25Speaker 3: was it just a hangout?
- 11:28Speaker 1: I think it's a hangout. I know a bunch of
- 11:30Speaker 1: them are married. They were kind of in an older generation.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I felt like I would be very young, but yeah,
- 11:37Speaker 1: they just go around and recruit tall people just to
- 11:42Speaker 1: hang out. They've, They've come to the club quite a
- 11:44Speaker 1: few times. They come through. Oh, fun. Yeah. It's just
- 11:47Speaker 1: this like a group of tall people that come through.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And like I said, they've given me, I think they've
- 11:53Speaker 1: given me their business card like twice. And I'm like, thanks.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I love that people assume I have a life. I
- 12:01Speaker 1: don't have that. I have Laughs Unlimited. That's my life.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I hang out every weekend, Wednesday through Saturday. Yeah, seriously.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 12:09Speaker 4: And when you're not there, you're creating like W2s and stuff.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Right. When I'm not there, I'm doing all the business
- 12:17Speaker 1: side of comedy.
- 12:19Speaker 3: When I get my text forms, I'm like, hey, Jenny,
- 12:21Speaker 3: how's it going?
- 12:25Speaker 1: You're like, Jenny did this all by herself. Yep, I did.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Can I interrupt you real quick? Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I wanted to just, because I find this very interesting.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Mary Upchurch has a really fun algorithm. And I always
- 12:39Speaker 2: talk about how she turned me on to some lady
- 12:42Speaker 2: that made like beads and things with bracelets or key chains.
- 12:46Speaker 2: The key chain lady where you would go on TikTok
- 12:50Speaker 2: and she would like make a whole bunch of key
- 12:52Speaker 2: chain things on your. She had to go. You said
- 12:55Speaker 2: you wanted to do it at one point.
- 12:56Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about? No.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It was like this lady had a whole bunch of
- 13:00Speaker 2: drawers and she would put like she would go on TikTok.
- 13:03Speaker 2: She's on TikTok. OK, there we go.
- 13:06Speaker 1: OK, yes. No, it's.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I don't know who, a lot of people do this,
- 13:10Speaker 4: and I haven't seen these videos for a while, but
- 13:12Speaker 4: I'm sure they'll come up.
- 13:14Speaker 3: It's like, pack this order with me.
- 13:17Speaker 4: And it's like 10 things, and then they go to
- 13:19Speaker 4: their little drawers, and it's like a self-defense.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Keychain they build. And it's really just crap, honestly, but
- 13:25Speaker 3: they do it like, it's all purple. And so it'll
- 13:28Speaker 3: be like the.
- 13:30Speaker 4: window breaker the kitty knuckles a pom-pom a lipstick case
- 13:36Speaker 4: and it then it makes this this fat keychain that
- 13:39Speaker 4: like kind of like the girls in high school would
- 13:41Speaker 4: be like making all this noise with like like i
- 13:44Speaker 4: don't know i never bought.
- 13:45Speaker 3: One i should go get.
- 13:48Speaker 1: One you're like i did show.
- 13:49Speaker 3: You that whole thing it was mesmerizing carlos.
- 13:53Speaker 1: That's so funny the best it's funny how different people's
- 13:57Speaker 1: algorithms are like have you ever JC at the club
- 14:00Speaker 1: and I did this one day where, you know, cause
- 14:02Speaker 1: you're both scrolling on the phone. And so we just
- 14:04Speaker 1: put our phones side by side and it's like, all right,
- 14:07Speaker 1: what is your video? And what's my video? And they
- 14:09Speaker 1: couldn't have been more different.
- 14:12Speaker 3: What's on your algorithm, Jenny?
- 14:15Speaker 1: Um, not surprisingly food. I get a lot of recipes. Um,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I love, I love to get recipes. Um, What else?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Sometimes it just like falls down a rabbit hole. For
- 14:27Speaker 1: a minute there, I was getting a lot of like
- 14:29Speaker 1: fights and stuff. But I think that they were sent
- 14:34Speaker 1: to me and then I watched them for too long.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, I got to watch less
- 14:37Speaker 1: than this. And sometimes I get. Mine tend to be
- 14:42Speaker 1: a lot of things that you have to read because
- 14:44Speaker 1: I'm a reader. And it's not that I'm interested in
- 14:47Speaker 1: that thing. But if there's words on the screen, I
- 14:51Speaker 1: have to read it. It's a compulsion.
- 14:53Speaker 3: That's a great, like a great habit to have because
- 14:56Speaker 3: when I see words, I don't want to read them.
- 14:58Speaker 1: That's true for a lot of people.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Mine is dachshunds.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I love dachshunds and I'll get a lot of dachshund
- 15:06Speaker 4: videos and then food recipes and then stuff. They get
- 15:12Speaker 4: me all the time with stuff to buy. I bought
- 15:14Speaker 4: my outfit the other night was all bought on TikTok.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Like skincare, hair care. adidas i've been buying a lot
- 15:22Speaker 4: of shoes yeah shoes always fit um um a lot
- 15:29Speaker 4: of hair stuff too but i can never like i
- 15:31Speaker 4: do everything and i can't get that kind of.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Hair yeah my my other thing is travel like i
- 15:37Speaker 1: did get a lot of road trip stuff i like
- 15:41Speaker 1: like have you ever been to this random place in
- 15:44Speaker 1: illinois it's great i'm like might be but then i
- 15:48Speaker 1: i save some of them and i'm like what if
- 15:50Speaker 1: i go there What if it's, what if it is great?
- 15:52Speaker 1: What if it's the best thing I've ever seen?
- 15:54Speaker 4: Jenny, there was one like that. A couple like that
- 15:57Speaker 4: had made me want to travel and I want to
- 15:58Speaker 4: go to Maine now that I saw somebody's thing. Cause
- 16:01Speaker 4: I never thought about Maine, but it's really neat. This
- 16:04Speaker 4: one girl went into a stationery shop and then had
- 16:07Speaker 4: lobster and a coffee shop.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And I'm like, that's all I want to do.
- 16:12Speaker 1: There was a, I think I saw a thing the
- 16:13Speaker 1: other day where you can stay in a, is it
- 16:17Speaker 1: a library or a bookstore? Yeah. you like stay in
- 16:20Speaker 1: the bookstore and you can like rent books. You get
- 16:23Speaker 1: a discount on books or whatever you, you know, like
- 16:26Speaker 1: you get 50% off and then you like work the
- 16:28Speaker 1: bookstore for a couple of days. And I was like,
- 16:31Speaker 1: that sounds kind of cool. I would do that.
- 16:34Speaker 3: That'd be perfect for you.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah. So random.
- 16:38Speaker 3: It is nice that we can get everything customized to
- 16:40Speaker 3: like what we want now.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Right. Yeah. But, you know, do you look outside enough
- 16:47Speaker 1: to see other things, to like find new interests? That's
- 16:50Speaker 1: always the question, right?
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah. But I trust my algorithm to introduce me to
- 16:56Speaker 3: new things.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Well, like some of my friends right now, they're into,
- 17:02Speaker 4: because it evolves. It was like friendship bracelets or even
- 17:06Speaker 4: those weird key chains.
- 17:07Speaker 3: And then now I'm seeing stuff that people like to
- 17:08Speaker 3: junk journal.
- 17:10Speaker 4: And I don't have the patience for this, but I
- 17:11Speaker 4: like to watch it. And it's, like, taking little things
- 17:15Speaker 4: and scraps, receipts, tickets, a coffee, you know, sleeve from
- 17:21Speaker 4: whatever experience and then making a page of, like, this
- 17:25Speaker 4: was my weekend.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Or this was my life right now. Yeah, it's, like,
- 17:28Speaker 1: scrapbooking for 2026. Yes. Now it's called junk journaling.
- 17:33Speaker 3: And then they're also doing, like, a lot of planners.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I bought a Hobonichi planner, which I didn't think I
- 17:38Speaker 4: needed and I still haven't used.
- 17:40Speaker 3: But I needed it. And it's just a way people
- 17:43Speaker 3: are like journaling their every move.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Like I had this many glasses of water and I
- 17:48Speaker 4: read this many pages and I don't know, I don't,
- 17:50Speaker 4: I'm not good at following through, but I am very.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Attracted to that kind of stuff. Yeah. The follow through
- 17:56Speaker 1: is the problem. I got, I have a book it's
- 17:58Speaker 1: behind me actually. It's called 52 lists and you're supposed
- 18:03Speaker 1: to do a list each week and And it has
- 18:08Speaker 1: like prompts or whatever. And I was like, oh, I could,
- 18:11Speaker 1: you know, it's not quite journaling. I could do a list. Yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I think I did three weeks and then I fell off.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:16Speaker 4: This is my Hobonichi planner that I bought and I
- 18:20Speaker 4: needed it so bad.
- 18:21Speaker 3: And it's a nice shape. I just haven't really used
- 18:23Speaker 3: it because I need to put everything on my phone.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And that's the convenience of the phone, the
- 18:29Speaker 1: up and the down.
- 18:31Speaker 3: So I got to stop buying stuff online.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Well, there's that. We're not here for that, though. We're
- 18:36Speaker 1: not here to better ourselves. We're here to talk about
- 18:38Speaker 1: all the fun stuff.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I want to enjoy myself. Yes.
- 18:43Speaker 1: You ready to do some trivia? Okay.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that sounds good.
- 18:46Speaker 1: You want to try some trivia? We'll see.
- 18:48Speaker 3: If it's my topic, I'm good at it.
- 18:51Speaker 1: It is a variety of topics, so don't get disheartened
- 18:56Speaker 1: because your topic might be in here. Okay. I think
- 19:00Speaker 1: you got it, at least a few of them. Ready. Okay.
- 19:03Speaker 1: We've got a little scoreboard here at the bottom. Don't
- 19:06Speaker 1: let it intimidate you. Yeah. What city did the Lakers
- 19:10Speaker 1: play in before LA?
- 19:14Speaker 3: Like Minneapolis.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Holy cow. I would never have known that one.
- 19:18Speaker 3: The Lakers.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Oh, is that why they're the Lakers? Yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Well, is Michigan land of a thousand lakes or is
- 19:26Speaker 3: it Minnesota? Either way. I know it's Minnesota.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Anyway, you got it. It's Minneapolis. You are 100% correct.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Look at that. One for one already. All right. We're
- 19:35Speaker 1: going two for two because I think you got this. Ready?
- 19:37Speaker 1: What is the capital of Nevada?
- 19:40Speaker 3: Oh, it's Reno. Carson City.
- 19:51Speaker 1: What is your final answer?
- 19:57Speaker 4: There's only like two cities in there.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I'm going to say Reno. I'm going to say Reno.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Oh, no, pick the other one.
- 20:07Speaker 3: It's Carson City.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go. Yeah, I know.
- 20:15Speaker 3: If you grew up in a state, then you learn
- 20:17Speaker 3: all that state's history.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:18Speaker 3: So I kind of learned that for like, I think California,
- 20:20Speaker 3: but not.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:22Speaker 1: So what's Sacramento? Shoot.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Sacramento is the capital of California.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Also, I gave it away.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Okay. On to film. What film did Robin Williams win
- 20:34Speaker 1: an Oscar for?
- 20:37Speaker 3: Good Will Hunting.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Yes. Look at you, three for three. Okay, okay. All right.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I have a funny story after you answer this question.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Name three of the Allied powers in World War II.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Is it like Great Britain, France, and the United States?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll take that. You said, yeah, USA, China, France, UK,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and Soviet Union.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Okay, I'll take it.
- 21:06Speaker 4: I didn't pay attention very much in history, and now
- 21:08Speaker 4: I wish I had, because I guess it's repeating itself.
- 21:12Speaker 1: So my niece is a trivia person, so she was
- 21:17Speaker 1: previewing the questions. So I said, name three of the
- 21:20Speaker 1: Allied powers, and she goes, Germany. Now she said it jokingly,
- 21:26Speaker 1: but then I said, well, I guess I didn't ask
- 21:28Speaker 1: for which side.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Which side?
- 21:30Speaker 1: Yeah. so technically I guess you could have been right
- 21:36Speaker 1: it didn't say allied with.
- 21:37Speaker 3: The US or allied with someone.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yeah right alright you're 4 for 4 you're killing it
- 21:45Speaker 1: what is the main organ in the circulatory system in your.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Body circuit is it the brain oh.
- 21:57Speaker 1: So close it's the other one the heart yeah.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Oh.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 22:05Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 22:08Speaker 1: He said, yeah. But what runs the heart? Okay. How
- 22:13Speaker 1: many herbs and spices does KFC's original chicken recipe contain?
- 22:20Speaker 3: Is it 11 herbs and spices?
- 22:21Speaker 1: It is. It is. Yes. Look at you. Five for six.
- 22:26Speaker 3: That's what really runs the heart.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Okay. right or stops it depends on who you ask
- 22:33Speaker 1: uh what is the city of pittsburgh's.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Nickname brotherly love.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Oh that's no that is somebody's but it's not.
- 22:46Speaker 3: I thought it was yeah because pittsburgh is where um
- 22:50Speaker 3: mr rogers.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Was from i think carlos what city is the brother
- 22:55Speaker 1: was is the city of brotherly love uh philadelphia Philadelphia.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Oh, no, I knew that.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Shoot.
- 23:02Speaker 3: And you know what?
- 23:02Speaker 4: They're going to be so mad at me because Philly
- 23:04Speaker 4: people are so passionate. And if you say, oh, Pittsburgh,
- 23:07Speaker 4: they're like, that's not the same, you dummy.
- 23:09Speaker 3: And it's, oh, I should have known that.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Carrie Gallagher lives in Philly now, and she taught me
- 23:15Speaker 4: everything about Philly.
- 23:16Speaker 1: She's going to be disappointed. See, no, that's why it
- 23:18Speaker 1: was on the brain. That's why you were like, oh,
- 23:22Speaker 1: forget Pittsburgh. You were like, I'm Philly-centric.
- 23:25Speaker 3: I've been watching The Pit. That's why, too.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Oh, I love The Pit.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Here's something really funny. KFC, you said 11 Herbs and Spices, right?
- 23:35Speaker 2: On their Twitter page, they only follow 11 people, and
- 23:38Speaker 2: they're all named Herb, and they follow the Spice Girls.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Yeah. I've either seen or heard that.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I love these companies and their Gen Z marketing team.
- 23:52Speaker 3: They are crushing it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah, right? Okay, so the city of Pittsburgh's nickname is
- 23:56Speaker 1: the Steel City.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 24:02Speaker 1: All right, we're back to movies now. Who directed Oscar
- 24:06Speaker 1: award-winning Hurt Locker and Point Break?
- 24:11Speaker 3: Catherine Bigelow.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Yes, okay.
- 24:16Speaker 4: You know, she used to date James Cameron or Spielberg
- 24:21Speaker 4: or something.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yeah, she was married to him.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Take Mary out for trivia is what I'm learning. Okay.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'm the one that's, I'm just there to write the answers.
- 24:31Speaker 1: That's all I'm there for.
- 24:33Speaker 4: By the way, I don't want to define Catherine Bigelow
- 24:35Speaker 4: by her marriage to what's his face. Like she has
- 24:39Speaker 4: her own accomplishments, but I feel like during that, there
- 24:42Speaker 4: was a campaign after the Hurt Locker to like, you know,
- 24:45Speaker 4: for your consideration.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And I don't know, that's just what my brain goes
- 24:49Speaker 3: back to.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Okay. It's a little, little history. Who shot Abraham Lincoln?
- 24:57Speaker 3: Aaron Burr. No, that was Alexander Hamilton. It was John
- 25:03Speaker 3: Wilkes Booth.
- 25:04Speaker 1: There you go. There you go. You got it. Aaron
- 25:09Speaker 1: Burr is going down for everybody at this point.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Carlos, maybe you remember this too.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:14Speaker 3: There was a really good commercial.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I think it was. Milk.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Was it milk?
- 25:18Speaker 4: It was milk.
- 25:19Speaker 3: And it was before Hamilton.
- 25:21Speaker 4: And this guy was in a Hamilton or an Aaron
- 25:24Speaker 4: Burr museum.
- 25:26Speaker 3: And that's all he did.
- 25:27Speaker 4: And then he's like on the radio getting this trivia
- 25:31Speaker 4: and he takes a bite of like peanut butter toast.
- 25:33Speaker 3: He goes, who shot Alexander Hamilton? He's like.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 3: And that's kind of how I remember that forever.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I love that you barely said three words and Carlos
- 25:49Speaker 1: was like milk. He was tuned in.
- 25:54Speaker 4: We share the same, like not algorithm, but like real
- 25:58Speaker 4: life algorithm.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Yeah. All right. This is the final answer. Do you
- 26:06Speaker 1: want to wager any of your points? How many points?
- 26:10Speaker 3: Oh, I have seven.
- 26:11Speaker 1: You have seven for like, it's like final jeopardy.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:15Speaker 3: So I'm one of those people who says, let's do
- 26:17Speaker 3: it all.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Let's do it.
- 26:18Speaker 3: And then I'll lose them all. But also like, who cares?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Right. Right. Right.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Let's do, well, let's do it all. Let's wager.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Okay. All right. Seven. It is. All right. Are you ready?
- 26:31Speaker 1: Who is the current host of jeopardy?
- 26:39Speaker 3: What's that guy's name?
- 26:41Speaker 1: Max.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Um, I, I can see his face. He's the guy
- 26:45Speaker 3: who like won the most and has the record. Is
- 26:49Speaker 3: his name Max? Um, Kevin, wait, Shoot, I don't know
- 26:54Speaker 3: his name.
- 26:55Speaker 4: And, like, Mayim Bialik was so mad because she didn't
- 26:58Speaker 4: get the permanent job.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Ken Jennings.
- 27:02Speaker 1: There you go. Yay! 14 points for Mary.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Oh, that worked. I wagered.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the most points I've seen. So we're on
- 27:15Speaker 1: week five, and that's the most points I've seen so far. So, hey.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Across all podcasts.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Yes. Every podcast ever. Definitely take Mary out for trivia night.
- 27:28Speaker 1: She knows it all. Well, we'll be seeing you at
- 27:33Speaker 1: LAF soon.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Yes. The 20th and 21st. 20th and 21st.
- 27:37Speaker 1: So excited. I know. I'm excited to have you back.
- 27:42Speaker 1: It's going to be great.
- 27:43Speaker 4: We always have a good time there. The crowds are
- 27:45Speaker 4: so good. The people are so fun. There's always like
- 27:49Speaker 4: hot people on date nights.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Yes yeah and laughs does seem to be do you
- 27:54Speaker 1: know how many times people have come in and they're
- 27:56Speaker 1: like we had our first date here it's so adorable
- 27:59Speaker 1: because laughs has been there for so long it's been
- 28:01Speaker 1: 45 years that people are like we've had our first
- 28:04Speaker 1: date here or we came here when when we were
- 28:06Speaker 1: in high school i've had people bring in like old
- 28:09Speaker 1: passes because they used to print them on cardstock with
- 28:12Speaker 1: the with the little jester with the the jester yeah
- 28:17Speaker 1: And they're like, are these still good? They were, you know,
- 28:20Speaker 1: I've had them. I got them when I was in
- 28:21Speaker 1: high school. I was like, yeah, absolutely. Come on in.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Oh, I love that. You know, that is really something.
- 28:27Speaker 4: If you think about it, like how many businesses have
- 28:29Speaker 4: been in the same place for so long. And if
- 28:32Speaker 4: you think about just like what that business means to
- 28:36Speaker 4: so many people, you know, they might.
- 28:38Speaker 3: And I think that with comedy.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Too, it's just, it's so nice when families, loved ones
- 28:43Speaker 4: can get together and laugh together and, you know, I
- 28:46Speaker 4: did a show at Mic Drop a few years back
- 28:50Speaker 4: and it was so fun.
- 28:51Speaker 3: A bunch of people I knew went. And I remember
- 28:53Speaker 3: going back the next year and like there was people
- 28:56Speaker 3: who weren't with us anymore who were at that first show.
- 28:59Speaker 4: And I was like, we really had a good time,
- 29:01Speaker 4: you know? And so like, I'm glad we were able
- 29:04Speaker 4: to celebrate.
- 29:05Speaker 1: You know?
- 29:06Speaker 3: So I don't know, people do comedy when it's something
- 29:09Speaker 3: important or they need to get away or they just
- 29:11Speaker 3: need to laugh. And I think that's what makes it
- 29:13Speaker 3: so special. And it's neat that Laughs Unlimited is, kind
- 29:15Speaker 3: of a cornerstone of that for Sacramento.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I love, I love when people come in with stories
- 29:20Speaker 1: and they, they, you know, have things and, you know,
- 29:23Speaker 1: or they bring their kids for the first time and
- 29:25Speaker 1: they're like, you know, it's, it's fun.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Um, and it's just in such a special place too.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I love the candy store next door. I love running
- 29:35Speaker 4: over and getting candy. And even just the feeling right now,
- 29:37Speaker 4: I'm thinking about the, the wood planks, you know, like,
- 29:40Speaker 4: and that's just part of the experience. Um, yeah, I'm
- 29:44Speaker 4: nervous too. I'm scared, but I think that always energizes me.
- 29:48Speaker 3: I'm like, well, I'm always like, what if they hate me?
- 29:51Speaker 1: What if they throw things?
- 29:53Speaker 3: But it certainly happened.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Is it normal for every, it's for every show you
- 29:57Speaker 1: always think that, or you just think Sacramento in general?
- 30:00Speaker 1: You're like specifically Sacramento. Yeah.
- 30:04Speaker 3: It kind of, yeah. You know, actually we've had so
- 30:06Speaker 3: many like fun, energetic, great shows. So I don't know
- 30:10Speaker 3: why I worry, but I do.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I feel like you're a little bit of a worrier.
- 30:15Speaker 1: So I'm not surprised by that. Plus, plus it means
- 30:18Speaker 1: you care.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah. You know what I've been saying?
- 30:21Speaker 4: You know, it's my motto lately and it's not good
- 30:23Speaker 4: that I say this, but I say, I stay scared.
- 30:27Speaker 3: So I stay safe.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Like that's not good.
- 30:32Speaker 3: But it is, it is amazing. I think, um, left
- 30:35Speaker 3: unlimited is the first club to have me headline. And, um, Oh,
- 30:41Speaker 3: I also want to share, hold on, hold on. Don't
- 30:43Speaker 3: look at me. Um, I've had a lot of firsts there, too.
- 30:50Speaker 3: You know, it was the first club. Don't look at
- 30:52Speaker 3: my messy apartment. The first club that let me headline.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Oh, yes. Yes. Look at that.
- 31:00Speaker 3: I don't know if you can still get this.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Yes, they're available on our website in the store. 45th
- 31:06Speaker 1: anniversary album featuring Mary Upchurch.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Yeah. And then look what Carlos is on here.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yep. jared jackson nate jackson yep tony baker.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Lance kalia my favorite by the way drew dunn did
- 31:22Speaker 4: you see him on the late show um late night oh.
- 31:26Speaker 1: He was so funny he's so yes he makes me
- 31:29Speaker 1: want to quit comedy.
- 31:31Speaker 3: He's so funny and i'm just like oh he's pretty nice.
- 31:36Speaker 1: He's very nice he's very nice i i really like
- 31:39Speaker 1: It's so funny because I love a comic with a
- 31:41Speaker 1: different perspective. And everything he says is so, I just,
- 31:46Speaker 1: it's not, I can't see where he's going. So it's nice.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Carlos is pretty nice, too. He's a pretty cool guy.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, he's all right. He's all right. We don't have
- 31:59Speaker 1: to say nice things just because he's on here.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I opened for him in Chattanooga and he just treated
- 32:04Speaker 4: me so well. He just made, I was, I think
- 32:06Speaker 4: he just made me kind of feel at home and
- 32:09Speaker 4: comfortable and like, you know, a lot of times like
- 32:12Speaker 4: headliners don't want to hang out with me.
- 32:17Speaker 3: I'm just not cool, you know?
- 32:19Speaker 1: I'm not like cool enough.
- 32:21Speaker 3: I think, you know, like I'm not.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I think that you think that. I think that you gotta, girl,
- 32:29Speaker 1: you're cool. You gotta own it. We went to the diner.
- 32:33Speaker 1: We had cake.
- 32:34Speaker 3: It was like your anniversary. Yeah. It was like just
- 32:38Speaker 3: a really special time.
- 32:41Speaker 4: So, so yeah, I have great memories of like a
- 32:43Speaker 4: lot of these comics and Sacramento.
- 32:46Speaker 3: It feels like a kind of a second home.
- 32:48Speaker 1: That's awesome. That's awesome. Well, we look forward to having
- 32:51Speaker 1: you back and thank you for your time today. Thanks
- 32:54Speaker 1: for taking your time out.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. Thank you so much. It was really
- 32:58Speaker 3: good to see you and I'll see you soon.
- 32:59Speaker 1: See you in a couple of weeks. Yeah.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Bye. Oh, that's great.
