- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Anna McGivern for December 21st.
- 0:13Today is winter solstice, the longest night and shortest day
- 0:17of the year in the northern hemisphere.
- 0:20For thousands of years, humans have marked this astronomical
- 0:24event. Ancient people spilled monuments
- 0:26aligned to the solstice sun. Stonehenge, Newgrange, Machu
- 0:31Picchu. They understood something
- 0:33profound. Today marks a turning point.
- 0:37After tonight, each day grows longer.
- 0:41Light returns. Winter solstice reminds us that
- 0:45darkness isn't permanent. It peaks, then recedes.
- 0:49The sun reaches its lowest point in the sky, then begins its
- 0:53climb back. So starting tomorrow, we gain
- 0:57seconds, 10 minutes of daylight. Slowly but inevitably, light
- 1:03winds. And that brings us to today's
- 1:06quote from Victor Hugo, who captured the promise of the
- 1:09solstice when he wrote Even the darkest night will end and the
- 1:14sun will rise. Hugo's words aren't just poetic,
- 1:19they're physical truth. No matter how dark it gets,
- 1:22morning comes. The earth keeps spinning.
- 1:26The sun keeps rising. This isn't hope or optimism.
- 1:29It's astronomy. It's certainty.
- 1:32The solstice teaches us this lesson in real time.
- 1:36Tonight is literally the darkest night of the year.
- 1:40Maximum darkness, peak, cold and shadow.
- 1:44And yet embedded in this darkest moment is the sea of return.
- 1:50Tomorrow late begins growing again.
- 1:53That's the pattern in nature and in life.
- 1:56The darkest moment often precedes the turn, when things
- 2:00feel most hopeless. When winter feels endless,
- 2:04that's often exactly when light begins its return.
- 2:08Hugo understood that darkness is never the end of the story.
- 2:12It's just a chapter. Night gives way to dawn.
- 2:16Winter gives way to spring. The turn always comes.
- 2:21So today, honor the turning. Notice that after tonight, days
- 2:26grow longer. Light starts returning.
- 2:30If you're in dark season, remember the solstice pattern.
- 2:33Darkness peaks, then recedes. The turn is coming, even if you
- 2:38can't see it yet. Tomorrow, watch the sunrise.
- 2:42Know that you're witnessing the return of light, not just today,
- 2:47but every day from now until summer.
- 2:50Because Hugo was right. The darkest night will end.
- 2:54The sun will rise. That's not hope, that's a
- 3:00certainty. That's Solstice.
- 3:03That's going to do it for today I'm.
- 3:04Andrew Mcevurn signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:10Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
