- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. We are back with our probably
- 0:13our favorite guest, and that's no offense to any of the other
- 0:16guest, but we got Rob Peetz, the movie guy, back with us to
- 0:19discuss a new movie that just came out at the time of this
- 0:22recording. Anyway, Sam Raimi directed Send
- 0:25Help and we're going to get into that.
- 0:26But before we do, let's introduce the real master of
- 0:30this program, and that is Jason Riley.
- 0:31Jason Riley, good to see you, buddy.
- 0:33It is I'm excited to be here along with our favorite guest.
- 0:36I want to get reaction from being called favorite guest
- 0:39because you were you were going to say something well.
- 0:41I don't know that I'm. I don't feel that way.
- 0:43I don't feel like a favorite. I feel like you guys are
- 0:45constantly putting me down when I'm not looking.
- 0:48I'm hearing things. Yeah, I'm hearing shit out
- 0:50there. It's not good shit.
- 0:52I'm going to be honest with you, it's not good.
- 0:54So I don't know what this is all about, but it's all bullshit as
- 0:56far as I'm concerned. But it feels social media, yeah,
- 0:59we have. To get a great start.
- 1:01We have to post shit on social media.
- 1:03Social media is about shit talking, so that's what it's all
- 1:05about. Sorry, it's the rule.
- 1:06Shit posting. It's true.
- 1:08Yep, Yep. It's true, all right.
- 1:09It's. True, we have a format.
- 1:10So before we get into this exciting movie that the two of
- 1:12you have seen and I will experience secondhand, but we're
- 1:15going to start with. As is the case.
- 1:17Shot, yeah, yes, Barry, what's what's shot #1 on your plate?
- 1:22I'm going sober tonight because you may have guessed from my
- 1:25tank top that I'm getting a workout in immediately following
- 1:29this record. So as you know, that requires
- 1:32sobriety. It's not my preferred or default
- 1:34setting, as we all know, but I will do it tonight because I
- 1:38have to. I got some pre workout.
- 1:39It's called Bryze and it's Godzilla flavor, Jay.
- 1:42It tastes like Godzilla's Wiener apparently so, which is
- 1:45surprisingly fruity. Check it.
- 1:47Out nice. I always thought so.
- 1:49Rob, what have you got tonight? Well, I mean, first of all, I
- 1:51think Godzilla's a woman, but what do I know?
- 1:54I could be wrong. I am not.
- 1:56I'm drinking a fact. Check that one.
- 1:59Yeah, I'm drinking. I'm drinking a a glass of water
- 2:03straight from a Star Trek 3, an original Star Trek 3 Search for
- 2:07Spock glass. It's just in honor of the it's
- 2:10in honor of the movies really is what it comes.
- 2:12It's got Christopher Lloyd on there is Krang is the character
- 2:16I think he was called, Yeah. Yeah, Kurt.
- 2:19Kurt Krug. Krug.
- 2:21Krug, Yeah, yeah. Krug.
- 2:24Krug. OK, I am in solidarity
- 2:27gentlemen. A nice tall glass of water here
- 2:29for you. Well.
- 2:30Chin, chin to that. Look at this three sober people.
- 2:34This can't be good. Cheers.
- 2:35That's. That's rough.
- 2:37How do we start it, Barry? You just take us away.
- 2:40Yeah, I will. Rob, at the time of this
- 2:42recording, we saw the movie just yesterday in the VIPJ, which I
- 2:46know is when you do get to the movies, is your preferred way to
- 2:49enjoy a movie. The only it was.
- 2:51Pretty good. The VIP experience that is.
- 2:53But when we got into it, this film, I was going to say one
- 2:56word that comes to mind, and this is not a knock.
- 2:58This is just my own personal thing.
- 3:00It's gross, but it's amazing. Rob, maybe you want to take us
- 3:04from there. I don't even want to say
- 3:05anything because any spoiler would just not be nice.
- 3:09But let me just tell you, there are, there are, there is
- 3:12nastiness around every corner, Rob.
- 3:15Yeah, so I thought we were talking about the Melania movie.
- 3:18That's what I went and saw on the weekend.
- 3:20So I'm pretty sure that lines up with what I was thinking.
- 3:23So I think we're good review 005, we're good.
- 3:26Done. Nice, all right, topical,
- 3:30topical humor there. Topical.
- 3:31All right, Yeah, yeah. All right, first.
- 3:33Before you get into the movie, I want to hear about the VIP
- 3:35experience. Like, how was that as you went
- 3:37in, sat down, took your seats? Everybody's probably been there,
- 3:40but I still want to hear about it.
- 3:42I don't know what do I care? OK, great.
- 3:44Thank you. Well, that's classic Rob that
- 3:47that certainly is classic Rob. I mean, I thought it was cool 11
- 3:50knock. It's a tiny thing.
- 3:51It's just my own thing. They didn't they do not have the
- 3:54additional fake butter dispenser available in the VIP concession
- 4:00area. Now, I guess that that means
- 4:02that the VI PS are perhaps a little more elevated in their
- 4:04tastes and to to put fake butter on popcorn is absurd.
- 4:09But for me, I like to do both. I get the real butter, but I
- 4:12also like a little extra of that stuff from the canister.
- 4:14We don't know what it is, care what it is, but it is good.
- 4:17I had to go back down to flights of elevator or escalator rather,
- 4:21to go to the lobby to get the, the, you know, the fake butter.
- 4:25And then I tail it back upstairs.
- 4:26I did. Yeah.
- 4:27Yeah. I'm not going to let this movie
- 4:28I went. I went with no.
- 4:30No, before we sat down. Yeah, boy.
- 4:32OK. Rob, what do you think?
- 4:33Yeah, Rob didn't. Want the bucket?
- 4:35Rob didn't want a bucket format. Well, he wanted a bag of
- 4:38popcorn, so we had to go back. Down.
- 4:40It's a whole, you guys. It was a whole.
- 4:41Not even. Done if he experienced like the
- 4:43hillbillies. Coming in at night, everybody
- 4:45the. One, I'm not I'm not the one.
- 4:48It's it's all him. It's not I'm not the one.
- 4:50So basically in the in the view of.
- 4:52The bag I'll. Explain it.
- 4:53I'm about to explain. He did it.
- 4:55In the first of all, I don't eat the entire large bag of popcorn
- 5:00when I go to a theater. I just don't do it.
- 5:02I have no interest in shoveling that down my gullet.
- 5:04So what I do is I crumble the bag up and I put it in my bag
- 5:07and I take it home and I might eat some later.
- 5:09That's that's it, no big deal. But with the box that they give
- 5:12you in the VIP thing, it's a giant box.
- 5:14There's no way to crumble that up.
- 5:16So what am I left with? You can, I'm left with that.
- 5:18I'm leaving in the the theater that no, it wouldn't have
- 5:21worked. I know it wouldn't have worked,
- 5:22no. It wouldn't have worked.
- 5:24I thought about it. It would have been chaotic so.
- 5:27You do really have no business being in a VIP because between
- 5:30we don't. We're a bunch of rubes.
- 5:31Yeah, we don't. Harry takes care all that.
- 5:33Is it's just like. Sunflower oil that they pour in
- 5:37there and you're like, I got to go down 6 elevators to get to it
- 5:40that that's not AVIP. And then meanwhile, Rob's
- 5:43crumpling up bags, picking garbage off the ground.
- 5:46All right, gentlemen. So you, you sat in the VIP
- 5:48experience and sort of took advantage of it I guess and kind
- 5:52of. Now started to hurt by by hour 2
- 5:55my my ass was hurting. Hour 2 How long is this movie?
- 5:58Hour and hour and a half, I guess.
- 5:59An hour and. 1/2 will you stay? Longer, it's nice and.
- 6:01Finish your popcorn. No, okay, all right, let's hear
- 6:04it now. Let's dive into this thing and
- 6:06then we'll do shot #2 Rob. Buddies.
- 6:09It's a, it's the return kind of of Sam Raimi doing his own thing
- 6:13and the kind of being allowed to do his own thing.
- 6:15And it's a fun movie. It's basically about a, about a,
- 6:18an employee at a company who's kind of getting ready for some
- 6:21sort of a promotion to like a VI, like I don't know, I don't
- 6:26know, I don't know what. The VP position.
- 6:28Probably AVP. Yeah, Her name is Linda Little
- 6:32and she's played by Rachel McAdams, right?
- 6:35So. And actually I thought she was
- 6:36kind of there's a little bit because it kind of had a bit of
- 6:39a Francis Mcdormand vibe to her from time to time, which was
- 6:42kind of weird from the sort of Fargo and yeah, even and a bit
- 6:47of. Kathy Bates.
- 6:48Kathy Bates, of course, Little later, little later on.
- 6:50OK. All right.
- 6:51So basically the the boss is the boss that she was working for.
- 6:55The owner of the company passes away and and his son is put in
- 6:59charge. I don't know if you noticed
- 7:00this, Barry, but the the original boss, who you never get
- 7:03to meet because he's dead, is actually hanging up in in the
- 7:05son's office, a portrait of him. Yeah, it's Bruce Campbell.
- 7:09It was, you know, I really, I didn't see.
- 7:11I didn't. Notice that.
- 7:12Didn't pay attention to the Easter eggs.
- 7:14Barry got to pay a little. Maybe you're.
- 7:16Maybe you're chowing down on that.
- 7:17Strip shoveling down corn. I was shoveling all the corn
- 7:20down. I'd never leave corn on the
- 7:22table. Jay and I sure as hell wasn't
- 7:23going to start last. Yesterday.
- 7:25No. Anyway, OK.
- 7:26Back to you. So that basically they, they,
- 7:29she, she kind of, I don't know, something happens where they go.
- 7:32She's kind of brought on this flight with them to go talk to
- 7:35some clients or something like that, some big deal overseas.
- 7:40Yeah, it's like a merger. They're going to close a deal
- 7:42and they're flying on a private jet to Thailand.
- 7:45That's nice. That's the whole thing.
- 7:46Yeah, OK. And the boss's kid, the new boss
- 7:49really doesn't like her because she's kind of a gross person.
- 7:51She like, has like little bits of egg salad on her face while
- 7:55she's trying to talk to him. And she's, she's a quirky,
- 7:57unusual character who's to be honest with you, they're both
- 8:01kind of a little bit unlikable there.
- 8:03There's something odd about both of them really.
- 8:05But he doesn't like her. He doesn't want, you know, So
- 8:07he's trying to just, but he kind of just takes her along because
- 8:10she is the one that does get a lot of the work done there.
- 8:13So the plane goes down. They end up being stranded on an
- 8:16island, him and her. And that's, that's basically the
- 8:19plot. I'm not sure that we should get
- 8:20into spoilers because it's such a new movie, but.
- 8:22Yeah, I know. It does go South pretty quickly
- 8:25from there. She's she's also a survivalist,
- 8:28so that that'll give you some hints as to where this might go.
- 8:30He is not. He's a rich boy who has no idea.
- 8:32He plays golf. That's all he knows.
- 8:35And the two fall in love. Well, you do not, right?
- 8:38You could, they could. But yeah, a lot of things
- 8:40happen, a lot of gross things happen, a lot of twists and.
- 8:44Turns, twists. Just what you think.
- 8:46You kind of, yeah, a lot of twists.
- 8:48For two people stranded on an island, there is a surprising
- 8:51number of twists. And they're, they're all good.
- 8:55It's like there's nothing. They were like, oh, come on, At
- 8:57least I didn't feel that way. I don't know whether you felt
- 8:59that way, Rob, but. No, there there was some great
- 9:00moments. It was tight storytelling, yeah.
- 9:03Did anyone? I was trying it dragged a little
- 9:05bit, but it was it was good overall.
- 9:07Did anyone climb up? I'm sensing a bit of slight
- 9:10different opinion on this movie from the two of you, so that's
- 9:12great. Let's dig into it.
- 9:13Did anyone climb up a palm tree and knock down coconuts?
- 9:17Or attempt to? Because that's a classic when
- 9:19you're trapped on a desert island.
- 9:21No, when they missed that. Eh, that would have been a.
- 9:24Don't think they had. To They had coconuts, but we
- 9:26didn't see them retrieving them, Yeah.
- 9:29That would have been a nice though.
- 9:31Like there's there's a, there's a plot device as well in here
- 9:33that that becomes exposed later on.
- 9:35But let's just say there's a mysterious side of the island.
- 9:40Like 7 seasons of lost or 6? Seasons, yeah.
- 9:43We don't know. We don't know.
- 9:43I'm not going to tell you, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:45OK, well since you're not going to tell me, I think we should do
- 9:48shot #2 see if any of these sober shots will loosen some
- 9:51lips. Barry, what have you got this
- 9:53time all? Right, the same thing, my
- 9:54friend. It's more Ryze Godzilla
- 9:57flavored. I don't know where they come up
- 9:59with this, but it's good. It's just like a light mango, I
- 10:02suppose. Well, that makes sense
- 10:03considering what we just saw, right?
- 10:04So yeah, I'm going back to the Kurt Kurge Kurge drink.
- 10:10Kurge and I got just plain old glass.
- 10:13Right. Cheers.
- 10:14Well, OK Chin, Cheers. So I guess we can say a couple
- 10:20of things and one is Rachel McAdams, obviously very
- 10:23attractive in person. Did you see that?
- 10:26Very thirsty. Sorry, Glass.
- 10:28Very. That's on island.
- 10:30I need, I need water, yeah. Hydrated.
- 10:33It's very important. Impressive.
- 10:35OK, sorry. They were able to make Rachel
- 10:36McAdams look pretty dumpy and which I thought was impressive
- 10:39and they didn't really do. They didn't add any prosthetics
- 10:41to her face. It's still her face.
- 10:43But her hair looked like a mess. Like Rob said, she had food
- 10:46caked on, food around her mouth. She just wore dumpy clothes.
- 10:50She just looked not what you'd expect.
- 10:52And Rob also mentioned the survivalist angle.
- 10:55I will say one thing. As they're in the private jet,
- 10:58it's revealed that she had auditioned or sent in an
- 11:01audition tape for the show's survivor.
- 11:04OK now her Co workers are all laughing and making fun of her
- 11:07while she's working her ass off in the back of the aircraft.
- 11:10So that's something just she's working.
- 11:12She's like. She's the back.
- 11:14She's the only one working. Yeah, she's like the.
- 11:16She's like the Comptroller, She's like in charge of all the
- 11:18finances. She might as well be the CFO,
- 11:20but she's not. But there's this guy in.
- 11:22The troller. I just love saying Comptroller.
- 11:24I know you like hearing it, Jay. Me too.
- 11:27So anyway, so that's revealed and so they're making fun of her
- 11:30and then of course bad things happen, but.
- 11:32The plane, the plane basically gets into some major turbulence
- 11:36and it kind of breaks up. But there's there's a guy that
- 11:38gets the guy, there's a guy that is going to get sucked out of
- 11:41the plane, but he kind of crawls over to her and tries to hold
- 11:44onto her leg and she's getting pulled with him out this hole
- 11:47that's in the side of the plane and then someone.
- 11:49Else gives me your seat. Remember that?
- 11:51Yeah, give. Me your.
- 11:53Seat. And then he grabs a rich guy.
- 11:55Yeah, he's a rich guy. He doesn't give a shit about
- 11:57anyone, right, But that's you know, but so another one of
- 12:00these like kind of rich young guys gets and starts pulling on
- 12:03the other guys leg. Now there's two on her and he
- 12:06gets sucked out. Then the second guy, the
- 12:08original guy gets sucked out as well.
- 12:11Is this is so such a Sam Rammy moment.
- 12:14His tie gets caught on the edge of the outside of the plane.
- 12:18So he's now he's now stuck to the side of the plane and his
- 12:20head is slapping against her window, which is yeah, so fuck.
- 12:25He's getting. So fucking good.
- 12:27And bloodier and bloodier. And what does she do?
- 12:29She does. Closes the window.
- 12:30Closes the. It was like it.
- 12:32Was amazing. It was a.
- 12:33Lot of humor, a lot of really good humor.
- 12:35None of it really fell flat. It was all quite good.
- 12:37The acting was great. Yeah.
- 12:39Dylan O'Brien I think is the guys name that plays the, the
- 12:42kind of Snooty rich kid. He's injured as well.
- 12:45So when they when she washes up on shore, she finds him down the
- 12:48shore a bit, but he's injured. So she kind of nurses him back
- 12:51to health. And that's kind of, you know,
- 12:53the beginning. He kind of seems grateful, but
- 12:55he's also he's just they they're both kind of like they both have
- 12:58these. I'll turn your motives and
- 12:59you're not really sure what's what.
- 13:01You know who they are exactly. And some stuff, stuff kind of
- 13:04comes out as they kind of hang around and and get to know each
- 13:07other a bit. And it ends up that she really
- 13:09is in control of this whole situation for the most part.
- 13:12And I won't get into how that all sort of opens up in the end.
- 13:15There's also a great scene where where she goes, she she knows
- 13:19there's a a wild boar out there somewhere.
- 13:21So she's like, I know I saw it. There always is.
- 13:23I'm going to go hunt for it. So she goes and hunt swimmers.
- 13:26It's one of the best scenes in the movie.
- 13:28I think it's very gory, but is this bore?
- 13:32Yeah, it's so good. She tries to kill the bore, but
- 13:34the boys like what? What?
- 13:35What the fuck? No way, man.
- 13:37And that bore just starts charging her.
- 13:39It's a oversized for sure. And she kind of takes it out
- 13:43with a lot of blood just spraying on her.
- 13:45It's it's. Yeah, but it's not just blood.
- 13:48The the boar is also coughing snot all over my face in
- 13:51addition to the blood pouring out.
- 13:53So it's like it's just a delicious, it's all over her
- 13:57face. Yeah, Oh my God.
- 13:59Well, Rob, before, before we go to to star ratings and final
- 14:04decision or final thoughts, I want to you mentioned it dragged
- 14:07a little bit, Barry didn't. So I'm curious to hear with that
- 14:10disconnect where without spoiling things, where did it
- 14:13drag for you or was it very? I think it was, I think it was
- 14:15honestly like end of the first act into the second act.
- 14:18It was a, it was kind of repeating itself.
- 14:19I'm not repeating itself, but we were lingering a bit.
- 14:22Also, I found the intro a bit long.
- 14:23Like we spent a lot of time with her and her nerdiness.
- 14:26We spent time in her apartment with her.
- 14:28Not that that was bad, but it did take a bit of time to get to
- 14:31the plane. Probably 1520 minutes, I guess
- 14:33maybe, you know, somewhere in there. 15 minutes.
- 14:37I don't know that we needed all that exposition.
- 14:39I think it was, it was fine, it worked, it was all good.
- 14:42But maybe they could have trimmed some of it.
- 14:43I think, I'm not sure exactly how long the movie was, but
- 14:46maybe an hour and 45 minutes, 50 minutes or something like that.
- 14:49They probably could have trimmed 10 or 15 minutes out of the
- 14:52movie and it would have been the same movie.
- 14:54So whereas primate was too fast, this was a little too slow
- 14:57getting set up. Barry, what's your thoughts?
- 15:00It was just right. An hour.
- 15:02Yeah, OK, got it. Yeah, in and out.
- 15:03I didn't notice any dragging and I don't think 15 minutes chopped
- 15:08out because, well, in the beginning when we're with her in
- 15:11her apartment and she's, I don't know, there's there's something
- 15:14that in her apartment that comes back at the very, very, very
- 15:17end. It's kind of a sweet throwback
- 15:19to the beginning. It kind of ties everything up.
- 15:21And the ending is one of the best, most satisfying.
- 15:25And people were clapping in the theater.
- 15:27That's how good it was. And now some of them were drunk
- 15:29because it is VIP and they're getting, they're getting
- 15:31margaritas and whatever at the VIP, which is great.
- 15:34But people were clapping and it was really satisfying.
- 15:39I was like, OK, this is there was no cop out here.
- 15:42This was a very well told story and I really do recommend it.
- 15:47It was well put together and. Yeah, the only disconnect.
- 15:50And I do know Barry for sure, he likes to not just go to a movie,
- 15:53he likes to settle into a world. So I can see where you would
- 15:56appreciate that set up. If there's one thing I've known
- 15:58about you, it's all online and that's, you know, some nice
- 16:01things that are said. You like to settle into a world.
- 16:03And that's I do. Thank you, Chuck.
- 16:05You do. All right, let's do final
- 16:06thoughts and and star rating. We'll start with our guest, our
- 16:10favorite guest, the movie guy, Rob Peetz.
- 16:13No offense to other guests. No offense, I'm not going to
- 16:15show this is true. Just so we all know.
- 16:16It's like, yeah, yeah, yeah. So overall I thought it was
- 16:21great. I don't think it was quite as
- 16:22good as Drag Me to Hell, which was one of his, which I think
- 16:25you would compare this movie to, which was a kind of a 15 years
- 16:28ago or something like that. I think that was a little more
- 16:30interesting, a little more fun, but this was still quite fun.
- 16:34I would say maybe 3 1/2 out of 5 for me.
- 16:37OK. So.
- 16:39Barry, your star rating, final thoughts.
- 16:41And then sing us out. Yeah.
- 16:43I agree with Rob. This did have a lot of
- 16:45similarities to Drag Me to Hell. Drag Me to Hell was yeah,
- 16:49perhaps a little better. But they both have one thing in
- 16:51common. They have fantastic finales.
- 16:53The endings for both of those movies are are just great, very
- 16:57satisfying. And so that's what I would say
- 16:59very. Classic.
- 17:01Very classic. It's like you kind of get the
- 17:03rug pulled out a little bit and you're like shit, wow, that's
- 17:06kind of cool. 4 out of five. It was a four out of five for
- 17:08me. I enjoyed it.
- 17:09I would just say one thing for anyone who is like me is maybe
- 17:13touch on the queasy side when it comes to too much gore and barf
- 17:17and snot on screen. There is no shortage of any one
- 17:20of those three things. So just know that going in.
- 17:23That's about it. Fantastic, but.
- 17:25See it? See it?
- 17:26I think we'll leave it there. You heard it here first.
- 17:28Folks, it's fun. See it?
- 17:30And Rob, we will see you next time when you're here to review
