- 0:04Marvin Cash: Hey, folks, it's Marvin cash, the host of the articulate fly. We're
- 0:07back with another on the water with Dustin White. Dustin.
- 0:09Dustin White: How are you, Marvin? I'm doing well.
- 0:12How are you doing today?
- 0:13Marvin Cash: As always? Just, uh, trying to stay out of trouble and, uh, you've
- 0:16been traveling around a little bit, but, uh, you're kind of back in the saddle
- 0:19in central Wyoming.
- 0:21Dustin White: Yeah, just a couple days, uh, off to dip down
- 0:24south. Uh, Jamie, my wife and I with two friends
- 0:27went down to Colorado to, uh, you
- 0:30know, first watch our browns get beat up by the
- 0:33cowboys and, uh, at a browns backers bar.
- 0:36And then, um, yeah, went to a concert after that. So,
- 0:39yeah, it just took a couple days, uh, to dip down south
- 0:42and, yeah, uh, back at it.
- 0:44Marvin Cash: Yeah. So how was the Leo sear concert?
- 0:50Dustin White: Yeah, as enjoyable as expected.
- 0:53As expected.
- 0:55Marvin Cash: So, you know, it's kind of funny. Looked, uh, at your weather
- 0:58and, you know, you're kind of getting that kind of typical late summer,
- 1:01early fall, central Wyoming weather where it's kind of cooling
- 1:03off a little bit, but you're getting kind of windy days, you know,
- 1:06no real rain. What are you seeing on the water?
- 1:10Dustin White: Been a little
- 1:12hatches. I mean, we are. We are getting the
- 1:15hatches that you would expect to see
- 1:17in terms of, you know, tricos in the morning, uh,
- 1:20afternoon, um, a good cattus
- 1:23hatch. Um, and then, um, you
- 1:26know, some, some modest blue wing
- 1:29hatches. Um, the degree
- 1:31of health, uh, of those hatches
- 1:35has been what's been very day to day.
- 1:37So we're getting some days where it's just a
- 1:40prolific cat as hatch and there's heads
- 1:43of fish, uh, in that late afternoon, early evening
- 1:46timeframe, just everywhere. And then, uh,
- 1:49you go out the next day and
- 1:52it's significantly reduced, uh,
- 1:55kind of waiting on that, that cool off to hit us. Um,
- 1:58we're waiting for flows to kind of drop
- 2:01a little bit more on the reef and that, that should help that.
- 2:04But yeah, having, having a little more
- 2:06temperate, um, you know, temps,
- 2:09some more mild temps, uh, is really, really going to
- 2:12help us. Having a little more cloud cover come through is really, really going
- 2:15to help us. But we still have some
- 2:18remarkably solid fishing, um, on
- 2:21the horn, still very
- 2:23grassy. Um, and, uh,
- 2:26you know, that can pose a little bit of problems, especially if folks are
- 2:29wanting to streamer fish. You know, you're raking in a lot of
- 2:32grass. Um, but in terms of bugs,
- 2:34you know, uh, cattus definitely are working
- 2:37well. Uh, see, PMD is actually some kind of
- 2:40late summer PMD's, uh, coming off there. Um,
- 2:43sow bugs have, uh, as always, have been
- 2:46really, really effective. Moving to the
- 2:48mile trichos, definitely in the morning have
- 2:51been, ah, the standard fare. Still
- 2:54eating Amelia, still eating caddis. Um,
- 2:57we've had some smaller to
- 2:59medium sized fish eating pretty well on the
- 3:02surface. But the big mile
- 3:05fish that folks want to go there to target, they're not
- 3:08quite looking up yet. So we're still a
- 3:11few days out from that, um, again, looking
- 3:14for that, uh, uh, that, that temp drop
- 3:17to, to come into play. And we should start seeing some, some
- 3:19productive fishing on that front. Uh, uh,
- 3:22in terms of the reef, you know, we're starting to fish some of the lower
- 3:25sections of it. The upper reef, pretty mossy,
- 3:28pretty grassy. Um, um, but have had some,
- 3:31you know, remarkably solid streamer days. Some, some
- 3:34really, really enjoyable streamer days. Uh, uh, the
- 3:37grass in that mid, lower section has just
- 3:40been pretty, um, thin. So that's been
- 3:43really, really helpful there. And again, day, uh, to
- 3:46day is a little different, but we've had some days where the dry fly
- 3:48action has just been remarkably productive,
- 3:51followed by a day where it's you look and there's
- 3:54not a whole lot of, um,
- 3:57heads to be found. But, um,
- 4:00again, we're just around the corner from
- 4:03that happening.
- 4:05Marvin Cash: Uh, very, very neat. And we don't have a question this time. Jay,
- 4:08if I lost your question, dude, I'm sorry. Send it to me
- 4:10again. Uh, we'll use it next time. But as I always say, we
- 4:13love questions on the articulate fly. You can email them to us
- 4:16or dm us, uh, on social media. And if we
- 4:19use your question, I will send you some articulate fly swag. And we are
- 4:22drawing for a half a day of fishing with Dustin. And you know,
- 4:25Dustin, as we always do, we gotta give a shout out to one of the
- 4:27local watering holes.
- 4:30Dustin White: Yeah.
- 4:30Marvin Cash: Yeah.
- 4:30Dustin White: And this one's gotta be the sunset grill. Not to be
- 4:33confused with the, uh, uh, boomtown
- 4:36and the sunrise plaza that we kinda highlighted, uh,
- 4:39a couple m months ago. But the sunset grilled is an
- 4:42alcove. And if you're getting off the mile or
- 4:45off the reef and want just a great
- 4:48hole in the wall divey bar, but
- 4:51with great service, uh, there. And,
- 4:53uh, in my opinion, one of the best greasy burgers
- 4:56there is to find, it's definitely at the sunset grill.
- 4:59So, you know, it's right off 220, um, almost
- 5:01immediately after as you pull out of the gray reef or leave
- 5:04Alcova, um, just a great spot. I mean,
- 5:07it's, you know, dollar bills that someone's
- 5:10scrawled some sort of message, uh, both
- 5:13appropriate and inappropriate on it and tuck
- 5:16it to the wall there. Uh, uh, it's, it's that sort of the
- 5:19spot, but the folks there are just super
- 5:22friendly. Um, um, like I said, great little hole in
- 5:25the wall food. Um, uh, and, uh, you know, if you want
- 5:28a really cheap, uh, uh, tall boy, pbr.
- 5:31That's. That's the spot to do it.
- 5:33Marvin Cash: Yeah. Just a slightly longer walk home, right?
- 5:37Dustin White: Yeah, it's not a walk home sort of spot. You know, if you.
- 5:40If you have a little much. Uh, we got the windy
- 5:43waters, uh, you know, rv park, uh, across the street
- 5:46that, uh, our friend Steve and Julie own. And,
- 5:49uh, they'll host you for the night if, uh,
- 5:51you can't get home safely. So, ah, it's a great
- 5:54little spot. Cool, um, little area.
- 5:57And, uh, I definitely recommend getting the beer battered
- 6:00french fries, uh, with your burger. Ah,
- 6:03it's definitely an experience that, uh, everyone
- 6:06should try, uh, as you leave the reef and leave the
- 6:08mile.
- 6:09Marvin Cash: Yeah, there you go. You know, you haven't lived until you've, uh,
- 6:12slept, uh, overnight in a trash bag on a picnic table.
- 6:15Dustin White: Exactly. And that's the spot to do it. They'll take good care
- 6:18of you.
- 6:19Marvin Cash: Well, there you go. Well, you know, as we get on the other side of Labor Day, I
- 6:22know that the bug now, uh, has their kind of
- 6:25non high season hours, right?
- 6:28Dustin White: Yeah. Yeah. We're back to our normal, typical
- 6:31business hours. We're not open Sundays. Uh,
- 6:34Saturdays close at 04:00 uh, throughout the
- 6:37week, 9930 to 530, if I
- 6:39believe. Um, I actually don't know the start time. I'm on the
- 6:42water every day, uh, when that's occurring. But,
- 6:45yeah, we're in kind of the standard business hours there.
- 6:48But folks, uh, want to give the shop a
- 6:51call that, uh, they'll. They'll be happy
- 6:54to acquiesce any sort of request you have, whether
- 6:57that's booking a guide trip or help for, you
- 6:59know, what. What hatch is occurring, what flies you need
- 7:02getting you out of to get on the water. We're happy to do that.
- 7:06Marvin Cash: Yeah. And so, you know, how many, uh, I guess more
- 7:08days do you have before you kind of pivot, uh, right before
- 7:11the holidays and head up and chase steelhead?
- 7:15Dustin White: Yeah, I'm pretty full through October,
- 7:17so it's still busy. We get a
- 7:20little bit of a late summer, uh, dip.
- 7:23I wouldn't even say it's a lull. Just I can actually have a
- 7:26five day workweek rather than a seven day
- 7:29work week or six day workweek. Um, so we're back
- 7:31into the swing of busy stuff. So it's
- 7:34kind of, you know, back into a grind, you know, pushing through
- 7:37all the way through October. Um, um, but, um,
- 7:40um, as, as, you know, you've experienced before, this is
- 7:43such a fun time of year to fish. Um, um, you know, we're
- 7:46stripping streamers. We're, you know, we're throwing hoppers. Uh,
- 7:49uh, we're throwing drys. There's just a ton of
- 7:52variety, uh, uh, just around the corner and right
- 7:54now. So, you know, we're legitimately days away
- 7:57from, from that kind of really kicking into full
- 8:00effect.
- 8:01Marvin Cash: Yeah. And good drinking weather, too.
- 8:04Dustin White: Exactly. It's real my, you know, once we get that mildest, get a little
- 8:07cloud cover coming in, you know, really pleasant
- 8:10days on the water with, uh, uh, just to be
- 8:12out there with a friend. Have a beer, uh uh, catch some good fish. Um
- 8:15um, it's. Yeah, it's. It's an enjoyable time, for sure.
- 8:18Marvin Cash: Yeah. Opens up the dark liquor verticals, uh uh, at the
- 8:21bar. So, uh, certainly
- 8:24does.
- 8:24Dustin White: Yeah, certainly, uh, does.
- 8:25Marvin Cash: And so, as I always say, folks, you owe it to yourself to get out there
- 8:28and catch a few tight lines, everybody. Tight lines.
- 8:31Dustin.
- 8:32Dustin White: Tight lines. Marvin.
