Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hell, Hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I am Mike di Giovanna, former La Times Baseball writer
- 0:13Speaker 1: and host of the show. If you're watching us on YouTube,
- 0:17Speaker 1: I'm not flying solo today, but we are going to
- 0:19Speaker 1: mix it up a little bit because Mark Trumbo, the
- 0:22Speaker 1: former Angel slugger and Halo Territory co host, was able
- 0:27Speaker 1: to put together a really interesting interview with Caleb Joseph,
- 0:30Speaker 1: one of his former Orioles teammates. Joseph is a former
- 0:34Speaker 1: catcher who played seven years in the Big leagues with Baltimore,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Arizona and Toronto from twenty fourteen to twenty twenty, and
- 0:42Speaker 1: is currently a TV analyst for the defending ALE champion
- 0:45Speaker 1: Toronto Blue Jays. Joseph provides quite a bit of insight
- 0:49Speaker 1: on several new Angels players, including Alec Manoa, Jordan Romano,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and Nick Sandlin, as well as new Angels hitting coach
- 0:57Speaker 1: Brady Anderson, who helped tutor him in Baltimore. Joseph spent
- 1:02Speaker 1: four seasons at Double A and says he never would
- 1:06Speaker 1: have made it to the big leagues if not for
- 1:08Speaker 1: Brady Anderson. He also weighs out a potential blueprint for
- 1:11Speaker 1: a team aspiring to go from worse to first in
- 1:15Speaker 1: its division. So listen up, Angels Helo fans.
- 1:19Speaker 2: We're lucky to have a very special guest today. He
- 1:22Speaker 2: is an expert on all things Blue Jays, and even
- 1:27Speaker 2: though we're not covering the Blue Jays, we have a
- 1:29Speaker 2: lot of their players and I was hoping a great
- 1:33Speaker 2: ex teammate of mine, a great friend of mine, could
- 1:36Speaker 2: lend us a hand with some scouting reports, possibly on
- 1:40Speaker 2: some of these guys that, frankly, I'm not terribly familiar
- 1:43Speaker 2: with some of them, I am. I'd also like to
- 1:46Speaker 2: talk about the Jays turnaround, going from a last place
- 1:49Speaker 2: club in twenty twenty four to a World Series appearance
- 1:53Speaker 2: and a very admirable showing against an excellent Dodger team
- 1:58Speaker 2: that is very stabbed. There's another topic on a new
- 2:02Speaker 2: Angel's coach that I think Caleb can lend some excellent
- 2:05Speaker 2: insights into. But how are you doing? What is going on?
- 2:09Speaker 2: And I'm going to let you do the heavy lifting
- 2:12Speaker 2: because you are the professional.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Not quite not quite doing great. Great to be with you,
- 2:19Speaker 3: Thanks for having me. I can't take my eyes off
- 2:22Speaker 3: of that silver bat in the background. I think that's
- 2:25Speaker 3: a silver slugger. Did you get that at the yard
- 2:27Speaker 3: sale or did you earn.
- 2:28Speaker 2: That that was an eBay purchase? Sometimes, you know, cruising
- 2:34Speaker 2: around you see things I said that would make pretty
- 2:36Speaker 2: good decre So, yes, thank you for pointing out on
- 2:40Speaker 2: the on the main show. I know AJ Pierzynski also
- 2:44Speaker 2: mentioned it. I think you came up actually the other
- 2:46Speaker 2: day at the context. But yeah, something maybe about arbitration.
- 2:51Speaker 4: But hey, let me tell you a quick story about AJ.
- 2:56Speaker 3: So my first year, I'm a rookie in the big
- 2:57Speaker 3: leagues and he's playing for the Red Sox, and I
- 3:00Speaker 3: mean he's been around forever. I get in the box
- 3:02Speaker 3: and I'm like, hey, what's up, AJ? And he just
- 3:04Speaker 3: looks at me, doesn't say anything. I was like, oh, okay, whatever.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So I end up grounding out or whatever. Next that
- 3:10Speaker 3: bat I woke up, Hey what's up? AJ showed up rookie.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I was like, oh, okay, that was just how it
- 3:17Speaker 3: was back then, back then, and you know Mark, back then, rookies.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Were to be seen not heard. AJ was great. And
- 3:23Speaker 4: then sure enough, four or five months into.
- 3:25Speaker 3: My first year he would actually talk to me, but
- 3:27Speaker 3: he was given me kind of that rookie silent treatment.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I always kind of respected him later on down the
- 3:32Speaker 3: line because.
- 3:33Speaker 4: That's just how it was.
- 3:34Speaker 3: It was kind of one of those things that you
- 3:36Speaker 3: had to do to kind of earn the veterans respect.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I'll never forget that at Boston, him just staring at
- 3:42Speaker 3: me like I didn't even exist.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Pretty cool.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I had a couple instances there, at least one
- 3:48Speaker 2: in spring training. He no doubt has no clue and
- 3:51Speaker 2: I didn't bring it up on the main show, but
- 3:54Speaker 2: he had a swimmer off the end of the bat.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I was playing first and I had let it go
- 3:59Speaker 2: just a little bit further than he would have liked.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It was one of those borderline ones and you know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: uncertain terms. He told me to we'll clean the language
- 4:07Speaker 2: up and to pick the ball up, and of course
- 4:12Speaker 2: in that context, I had to let it go because
- 4:15Speaker 2: that is kind of a test of and it went
- 4:17Speaker 2: foul whatever. But I think once he realized I could
- 4:19Speaker 2: play a little bit, that that was how it was,
- 4:22Speaker 2: and you are correct, and I think that that's, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: some of the insights that fans want and the way
- 4:27Speaker 2: things have changed when we came up. You had to
- 4:30Speaker 2: earn it whatever you did in the minor leagues was
- 4:33Speaker 2: more or less irrelevant. Not that it's totally different now,
- 4:37Speaker 2: but I think guys, you know, they're coming up at
- 4:39Speaker 2: slightly younger ages, they're breaking in and it is a
- 4:42Speaker 2: little different world. You're on top of it. You do
- 4:44Speaker 2: this for a living, and I think, if you want
- 4:47Speaker 2: to jump right in, I want to talk about Alec Manoa.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think he slots in in the middle of our rotation,
- 4:54Speaker 2: maybe a little towards the back end. What do you
- 4:57Speaker 2: think about Alec Manoa? How do you see this fit
- 4:59Speaker 2: for the Angels.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, this is one of those real interesting signs. I
- 5:03Speaker 3: think that Perry manassia and has kind of gone out
- 5:07Speaker 3: on a limb and said, hey, if we could kind
- 5:08Speaker 3: of find a little bit that magic he had in Toronto,
- 5:11Speaker 3: we might have something.
- 5:12Speaker 4: And if not, so be it whatever.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Alec was a star in Toronto when he I think
- 5:18Speaker 3: finished second in the cy.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Young voting not too long ago.
- 5:22Speaker 3: He had an absolute dominant year and I've never watched
- 5:26Speaker 3: a pitcher that young dominate the league the like like
- 5:31Speaker 3: the way he did in Toronto. And it was impressive
- 5:34Speaker 3: to see he got really big, really quickly. He was
- 5:37Speaker 3: on billboards he was on commercials, and I think a
- 5:41Speaker 3: lot of that success kind of got into his head
- 5:43Speaker 3: a little bit, not understanding that the league is going
- 5:47Speaker 3: to hit back at some point, and the league hit
- 5:49Speaker 3: back in that second year, and he just did not
- 5:51Speaker 3: have the ability to make quicker adjustments.
- 5:55Speaker 4: The fastball that he was using.
- 5:57Speaker 3: It was a combo of the four seam in the
- 5:58Speaker 3: two seam. He got a lot of ground balls on
- 6:00Speaker 3: the two seem in that really successful year. Then he
- 6:02Speaker 3: would go up top with the four seam and really
- 6:05Speaker 3: blow guys away.
- 6:06Speaker 4: He had a pretty good little sweeper break and.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Ball that was tight, and he threw a change up
- 6:11Speaker 3: every once in a while, but he really leaned on
- 6:13Speaker 3: the two different.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Fastballs and the slider.
- 6:17Speaker 3: In the last couple of years, he just has battled
- 6:19Speaker 3: injury after injury. His confidence has probably at an all
- 6:23Speaker 3: time low, if I had to guess, considering he didn't
- 6:25Speaker 3: really pitch in the big leagues in the last year.
- 6:27Speaker 4: And a half.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Now, with that being said, he has shown that he
- 6:31Speaker 3: can get outs in the big leagues.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Is it going to take.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Quite a bit of work, quite a bit of effort,
- 6:36Speaker 3: and a little bit of a runway to get that
- 6:39Speaker 3: confidence absolutely. I wouldn't put all your eggs in his basket.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But if he shows up much like a Miles Straw
- 6:47Speaker 3: did this year for the Blue Jays and gives you
- 6:50Speaker 3: more than you expect, then it's a great sign. Otherwise
- 6:53Speaker 3: you kind of move on and see what else you
- 6:54Speaker 3: have in the system.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah, under two million dollars too, I think it's an
- 6:59Speaker 2: under the radar. This could be a really nice sign.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I think that Anaheim is it's not low pressure, but
- 7:05Speaker 2: it's you've when we both played there. There is some
- 7:09Speaker 2: but it is a good place for a guy like
- 7:11Speaker 2: that to have a resurgence. Mike Maddox is the new
- 7:14Speaker 2: pitching coach. He's got as much experience as anyone in
- 7:18Speaker 2: the game, probably with the recent hirings and the trends
- 7:22Speaker 2: going on, more experienced than maybe nearly all. Well, let's
- 7:28Speaker 2: talk about Jordan Romano. He was a former Jay's closer
- 7:34Speaker 2: at one point. He's kind of bounced around. Last year
- 7:37Speaker 2: was a down year for him, but when he is going, well,
- 7:41Speaker 2: what do you like about Jordan and what does you
- 7:43Speaker 2: know he need to do to get back to form.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Yeah, the Markham, Ontario native was kind of.
- 7:50Speaker 4: A hometown hero.
- 7:51Speaker 3: So to speak in Toronto, they would dim the lights,
- 7:54Speaker 3: the fire.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Emojis are coming up in the music.
- 7:57Speaker 3: And he was the stopper in Toronto for an number
- 8:00Speaker 3: of years, featuring that real high octane fastball, good hard slider.
- 8:06Speaker 4: He's a tall fella.
- 8:07Speaker 3: He's really kind of goofy off the field, but in
- 8:10Speaker 3: between the lines, he's an absolute battler.
- 8:13Speaker 4: He gets out there and there's a mantra. There's like
- 8:16Speaker 4: a switch that.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Flips for him in that he turns into this just
- 8:22Speaker 3: guy that is out for blood. And I love the
- 8:24Speaker 3: fact that he can do that. For a lot of guys,
- 8:26Speaker 3: it's a bit of a fake, you know, that's not real.
- 8:28Speaker 4: You're just trying to really pump yourself up. Not in
- 8:30Speaker 4: Jordan's case.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And I was lucky to play with Jordan in his
- 8:34Speaker 3: rookie season twenty twenty, and he didn't have that kind
- 8:36Speaker 3: of mantra.
- 8:37Speaker 4: But you could tell there was a lot of fire
- 8:39Speaker 4: in the belly and he.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Kind of had that bleep Eugene in him. And of course,
- 8:44Speaker 3: with some success in the big leagues and continuing to
- 8:46Speaker 3: work on the back end of baseball games, he kind
- 8:48Speaker 3: of developed that type of mantra. Now much like Manoa
- 8:52Speaker 3: the last year and a half, he's been hit in
- 8:54Speaker 3: the mouth and he's going to have to find a
- 8:56Speaker 3: way to kind of get that persona back look. What
- 8:59Speaker 3: is it chicken and egg conversation with success versus confidence?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Do you gain success after you know you're confident or
- 9:08Speaker 3: do you gain confidence after you have success? And I
- 9:10Speaker 3: think these are two questions that both Manoa and Romano
- 9:14Speaker 3: are going to really have to kind of figure out.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Are they going to try and fake it until they
- 9:18Speaker 3: make it or do they need to see some really
- 9:20Speaker 3: good early success before they start to really build that
- 9:23Speaker 3: true interconfidence. In Jordan's case, Jordan has the ability to
- 9:27Speaker 3: get outs on the back end of baseball games.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I think the tightness of his slider, in terms of
- 9:32Speaker 4: it being really tight.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Spinning and a short, late downward type action on the
- 9:38Speaker 3: slider is key for him.
- 9:39Speaker 4: He loves that pitch.
- 9:40Speaker 3: It's a pitch that he really I think goes to
- 9:42Speaker 3: when he's super confident, and he tends to lean on
- 9:45Speaker 3: that when he's having a lot of success. There are
- 9:48Speaker 3: times when he wants to shy away from his fastball
- 9:50Speaker 3: and it can get up there ninety seven, ninety eight,
- 9:52Speaker 3: ninety nine and at times he has become predictable in
- 9:56Speaker 3: pitching to basically back, so to speak, and I think
- 10:01Speaker 3: hitters have adjusted to that. He typically likes to work
- 10:04Speaker 3: that fastball up in the slider below, but at that
- 10:06Speaker 3: point he gets boxed in on one side of the zone.
- 10:10Speaker 3: So if you want to look up, you can look up,
- 10:11Speaker 3: and it's an easy take down. If you want to
- 10:13Speaker 3: look for that slider, you eliminate anything up, and he.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Becomes an easy at bat, so to speak.
- 10:19Speaker 3: So if I'm an Angels fan and I'm kind of
- 10:22Speaker 3: watching what Romano needs to do, in my opinion, he
- 10:24Speaker 3: needs to really kind of locate that fastball a little
- 10:27Speaker 3: bit better on the outer half and maybe even a
- 10:29Speaker 3: little bit lower to then set up that slider a
- 10:32Speaker 3: little bit better. But he comes with a ton of experience,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and if he can get going when his confidence starts
- 10:37Speaker 3: to build, he can ride that roller coaster up and
- 10:40Speaker 3: he can tend to kind of drag that out into
- 10:43Speaker 3: long and prolonged series of success.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Well, I mean, that's incredible. I think that one pitch
- 10:51Speaker 2: that I'd like to see get highlighted over all the
- 10:54Speaker 2: other ones. The sweeper was very popular a couple of
- 10:57Speaker 2: years ago. I don't hear much about that anymore. Like
- 11:00Speaker 2: last year, the split finger was everywhere, and you know what,
- 11:04Speaker 2: it was nasty. Both Gosman and you Savage pronounce that correctly. Yes, yes,
- 11:12Speaker 2: devastating split fingers. There's no question A big fan of that.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But the down and away fastball will never go out
- 11:19Speaker 2: of fashion. You and I have talked about it, obviously.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think that's a big key. There's a number of
- 11:24Speaker 2: guys on the Angels pitching staff that I think would
- 11:27Speaker 2: benefit from locating their fastball. Down and away is not
- 11:31Speaker 2: a pitch that guys drive. It is, you know. I
- 11:35Speaker 2: know that there's a danger zone that's about thigh high,
- 11:38Speaker 2: at lower thigh whatever it is, and people don't really
- 11:41Speaker 2: want to pitch there. But down in a way, I
- 11:43Speaker 2: mean I had a little bit of power. You can't
- 11:47Speaker 2: do anything with it. I mean unless the guy is
- 11:49Speaker 2: disciplined and wants to take a hit the other way.
- 11:52Speaker 2: That's about all you can do with the nicely, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 2: and getting ahead in the count is huge, so little tangent,
- 11:58Speaker 2: but I think we're trying to give the fans little
- 12:00Speaker 2: look behind the curtain on what you know, our opinion
- 12:04Speaker 2: as ex players is, and that's mine down in our way.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Fastball nothing new, It's been round forever, but I'd like
- 12:11Speaker 2: to see it come back. We can kind of cover
- 12:13Speaker 2: these other guys a little bit quicker. Nick sandland Is
- 12:16Speaker 2: appears to be a side arm reliever. I've seen him
- 12:19Speaker 2: with the Guardians previously, I think, and he had a
- 12:21Speaker 2: brief stint with the Blue Jays. Did you see much
- 12:23Speaker 2: out of him? You know, he's got an odd look,
- 12:26Speaker 2: which I think most managers really like to have in
- 12:29Speaker 2: their bullpens.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 3: So many bullpens nowadays are against different matchups certain guys.
- 12:36Speaker 4: They want to.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Face certain hitters because of how they could potentially match up.
- 12:40Speaker 3: If you're a sinker baller, you might want to face
- 12:42Speaker 3: a guy that has a little bit more of a
- 12:45Speaker 3: choppy type swing. If you've got kind of that high riding,
- 12:48Speaker 3: octane fastball, you kind of want more of a guy
- 12:50Speaker 3: with a little bit more tilt in his swing. Of course,
- 12:52Speaker 3: we can measure all of these things now in baseball,
- 12:54Speaker 3: and you can see how they want to start to
- 12:56Speaker 3: match up different hitters versus pitchers. And Sandling being from
- 13:00Speaker 3: the side reminds me a lot of Adam Simber, who
- 13:03Speaker 3: was in Toronto a couple of years earlier had a
- 13:06Speaker 3: ton of success, and we played with Darren O'Day in
- 13:09Speaker 3: Baltimore who had a I mean an amazing career, throwing
- 13:13Speaker 3: like eighty five miles per hour.
- 13:15Speaker 4: And one thing about those sidearm guys is I remember.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Catching them over and over and over and then facing
- 13:21Speaker 3: them in like a spring training kind of mock bp set,
- 13:25Speaker 3: and it was unbelievable how different it was to catch
- 13:27Speaker 3: them versus hit them. Catching them, I could close my
- 13:30Speaker 3: eyes and basically catch with one eye closed, but hitting
- 13:34Speaker 3: them it was a totally different look. And I really
- 13:37Speaker 3: think that's exactly what what Sandlin brings is.
- 13:39Speaker 4: It's a different look. You've got to readjust your eyes,
- 13:41Speaker 4: You've got to look a little bit lower. He's not
- 13:43Speaker 4: going to overpower.
- 13:44Speaker 3: He's not afraid to throw sinkers into rieties, which is
- 13:46Speaker 3: what a lot of these kind of sinker ballers need
- 13:49Speaker 3: to do from time to time. He's got that big sweeper.
- 13:52Speaker 3: He's obviously coming off of a bounce back year. He
- 13:54Speaker 3: was injured most of the year in Toronto. When he
- 13:56Speaker 3: was healthy, he was very effective, but he was in
- 14:00Speaker 3: and then just could not get back. I would out
- 14:02Speaker 3: of the first two that we've talked about, I would
- 14:04Speaker 3: say Sanlin probably has the best chance to be an
- 14:07Speaker 3: impact guy as consistently as anyone in that Angel's wullpen,
- 14:11Speaker 3: just because it's a different looking because he's got a
- 14:12Speaker 3: lot to prove well.
- 14:15Speaker 2: That is certainly optimistic. I think he always looked nasty.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Any side armor looks nasty in my opinion these guys,
- 14:21Speaker 2: the velocity is somewhat irrelevant. Darren O'Day might have thrown
- 14:26Speaker 2: eighty four miles an hour, but that's that is not
- 14:29Speaker 2: what makes him difficult to hit. If you can have
- 14:32Speaker 2: a guy from that arm angle. And the weird thing is,
- 14:35Speaker 2: I think when you're catching your head on, you know
- 14:37Speaker 2: you're getting a good look at it with both eyes.
- 14:39Speaker 2: When you're in the box, especially for a right handed
- 14:41Speaker 2: hitter and a right handed side armor, you have to
- 14:45Speaker 2: somewhat In my opinion, the approach became left center and
- 14:50Speaker 2: I'm going to open up my stance, which is awfully scary,
- 14:54Speaker 2: exposing a lot of yourself to a guy that's coming
- 14:57Speaker 2: from that harm angle. But that was the only matchup
- 14:59Speaker 2: that I I mean, as a younger player, I know
- 15:03Speaker 2: I would have tried to take him the other way,
- 15:05Speaker 2: stay inside the ball. The cliches that I think have
- 15:09Speaker 2: gone the way that they should. Sometimes they are applicable,
- 15:13Speaker 2: no doubt, but at least with the side armors, I
- 15:15Speaker 2: never had any success until I started to make some
- 15:18Speaker 2: adjustments and actually tried to pull him a little bit.
- 15:20Speaker 2: But they are you know that you don't see a
- 15:22Speaker 2: lot of them. They always seem to be coming into
- 15:24Speaker 2: the game when you least want a weird look type
- 15:28Speaker 2: ball game. So he should really help. Miguel Castro has
- 15:32Speaker 2: somewhat He's not that far down, but you did catch him.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He's a new addition. He hasn't been talked about too much,
- 15:38Speaker 2: but we were oriol semates with him. He is, in
- 15:40Speaker 2: my opinion, a guy that eats a lot of innings.
- 15:44Speaker 2: He's a tough guy. He came up to the big
- 15:47Speaker 2: leagues at a very young age, really big stuff, and
- 15:50Speaker 2: he's kind of bounced around. But catching him, what do
- 15:53Speaker 2: you recall?
- 15:54Speaker 3: Oh, well, first of all, he's a Kevin Durant doppelganger.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Looks just like Kevin Durant. So Angels fans, I'm sure
- 16:01Speaker 3: you'll notice that right out the gate when you see
- 16:03Speaker 3: him come into the game.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Massive guy, what is like six'.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Seven his ankles can't be but this big round He's
- 16:10Speaker 3: he's one of those really really, tall lanky.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Guys hands are probably twice the size of my. HANDS i,
- 16:17Speaker 4: mean his fingers are.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Gigantic he can almost put his entire hand around to.
- 16:22Speaker 3: BASEBALL i remember catching him in just tremendous movement at tremendous.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Velocity he's getting a little bit. OLDER i think his fastball.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Kind of more around that ninety four to ninety six
- 16:32Speaker 3: mile prior. Range WHEN i had, him he was ninety
- 16:34Speaker 3: seven ninety nine with tremendous run in. Sync for, me
- 16:38Speaker 3: it's all about his arm angle With. Castro the lower
- 16:42Speaker 3: he gets with the arm, angle the more run he.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Gets i've never liked run because the bat is longer
- 16:49Speaker 3: than it is. WIDER i like stuff moving north south
- 16:52Speaker 3: because you've got less barrel to work. With when he
- 16:55Speaker 3: gets his arm in a certain, position he can really
- 16:58Speaker 3: do some damage because that has tremendous. Sink he's got long,
- 17:01Speaker 3: levers meaning his extension is really. Good he's one of
- 17:04Speaker 3: those at bats that when you see it face to,
- 17:08Speaker 3: face he feels like he's releasing the ball right in
- 17:11Speaker 3: front of your, face and it's really tough and, uncomfortable
- 17:15Speaker 3: and even though it might register.
- 17:16Speaker 4: As ninety, five it's going to perceive and be felt.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Like it's ninety eight ninety nine because he's so out
- 17:23Speaker 3: there in your.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Face but good, sweeper good, Slider he's gonna eat. Innings
- 17:28Speaker 4: he's got.
- 17:28Speaker 3: A rubber, arm can typically go back to back days
- 17:31Speaker 3: without any. Problem, again he is getting a little bit,
- 17:33Speaker 3: older BUT i loved. HIM i loved that he came
- 17:37Speaker 3: into the game and was not afraid of big. Situations
- 17:39Speaker 3: and he's one of those cool guys in the, clubhouse
- 17:42Speaker 3: always a smile on his, face but when he gets
- 17:44Speaker 3: in between the, lines much Like, romano he turns into
- 17:48Speaker 3: a different.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Animal another guy that could be a big contributor this.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Year we haven't talked about him a, ton AS i,
- 17:55Speaker 2: said but a lot of Upside AND i think that's
- 17:58Speaker 2: a trend that we're seeing those guys you, know maybe
- 18:02Speaker 2: are not coming off their best, years but being given
- 18:05Speaker 2: an opportunity to go back, out return to form in
- 18:08Speaker 2: a place that you, know quite, honestly is a very
- 18:13Speaker 2: good spot for someone that needs to build their. Confidence
- 18:16Speaker 2: we've covered a couple of the other guys want to
- 18:18Speaker 2: keep it moving just a little. Bit But Jose siri
- 18:20Speaker 2: was signed. Yesterday he has some of the stranger Numbers i've.
- 18:25Speaker 2: SEEN i pulled up his baseball. REFERENCE i was trying
- 18:31Speaker 2: to piece together what Exactly. Now he wasn't a Blue,
- 18:34Speaker 2: jay but you have seen him quite a. Bit he
- 18:36Speaker 2: seems he was rated as the second fastest guy a
- 18:39Speaker 2: handful of years ago in. Baseball he routinely is in
- 18:41Speaker 2: the top, ten so he can obviously. Fly his defensive
- 18:44Speaker 2: metrics were you, know we use savon a, lot or
- 18:47Speaker 2: at LEAST i, do nearly maxed. Out and on the offensive,
- 18:51Speaker 2: side he's got some pop in the. Back but there
- 18:55Speaker 2: are a couple of. Things the batting average was very,
- 18:57Speaker 2: low the on base percentage very, low so he's a
- 19:02Speaker 2: very intriguing, guy and center field is pretty much wide.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Open they have an excellent defender In Bryce, tiodosio who
- 19:09Speaker 2: was called. Up covers as much range AS i can,
- 19:12Speaker 2: recall and it really is a special defensive. Player but
- 19:15Speaker 2: the bat is a work in, progress SO i think
- 19:17Speaker 2: him And SyRI they're both right handed, too so there's
- 19:20Speaker 2: not really a natural platoon opportunity. There but what did
- 19:24Speaker 2: you see out of A siri when you Saw.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Yeah you don't normally say the word raw to describe
- 19:30Speaker 3: kind of an older player that has been in the
- 19:32Speaker 3: league for more than two or three, years BUT i
- 19:35Speaker 3: still feel like that's the best word to describe. Him
- 19:38Speaker 3: saw him In, tampa saw him In New, york and
- 19:40Speaker 3: just a very raw type of. Player imagine like a
- 19:43Speaker 3: high school football player with all these, talents just showing
- 19:47Speaker 3: up to a baseball field and doing certain things that
- 19:50Speaker 3: you really don't see very, often yet not really excelling
- 19:53Speaker 3: in the entire. Package that's to, me That's suri Suriy.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Can he's got that kind of collision type approach at the.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Plate he can.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Run into one and you're going, wow like that was,
- 20:02Speaker 3: Amazing like let's do that more. Often and then he
- 20:04Speaker 3: could go a month without square in the ball. Up
- 20:06Speaker 3: but he's going to make an acrobatic catch in the,
- 20:08Speaker 3: outfield he's going to do something crazy on. Defense and
- 20:12Speaker 3: that's WHY i think you continue to give guys like
- 20:14Speaker 3: that at. Bat So i'm not surprised one bit that
- 20:17Speaker 3: The angels are taking a chance on just pure raw.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Talent you just never. Know sometimes later on in guys'
- 20:23Speaker 3: careers with this type of raw. Ability something. Clicks maybe
- 20:27Speaker 3: it clicks for The.
- 20:28Speaker 2: ANGELS i think that's a great. TAKE i will Piggyback
- 20:32Speaker 2: Trey mancini a little bit later with another, question And
- 20:36Speaker 2: siri can be lumped into that as, well because The
- 20:40Speaker 2: angels have a new hitting coach THAT i think we're
- 20:42Speaker 2: going to want to talk, about at LEAST i, do
- 20:44Speaker 2: And i'm hoping to Get brady on the show as.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Well But Brady anderson is Who i'm talking. About this
- 20:49Speaker 2: is another. TOPIC i think it. Applies it may be
- 20:53Speaker 2: a little bit of a stretch for the fans to
- 20:55Speaker 2: kind of wrap their head. Around but The Blue jays
- 20:57Speaker 2: in twenty twenty, four we're seventy four and eighty. Eight
- 21:01Speaker 2: they were a last place club in The Al, east
- 21:04Speaker 2: AND i don't think a lot went. RIGHT a number
- 21:08Speaker 2: of guys had down. Seasons their bullpen quite, honestly looked,
- 21:12Speaker 2: awful AND i didn't watch anywhere near as much as,
- 21:17Speaker 2: you BUT i know they were not a good ball.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Club fast forward a year twenty twenty, five we obviously
- 21:23Speaker 2: know that they first place in The Al, east advanced
- 21:27Speaker 2: all the way to The World, series and WERE i
- 21:29Speaker 2: think an out away from from winning. It that was
- 21:34Speaker 2: an incredible the best SERIES i CAN i can, remember
- 21:37Speaker 2: And i've seen you, know as many as forty year
- 21:40Speaker 2: old has. Seen but incredible was at the first two,
- 21:43Speaker 2: games as were, you although we couldn't connect because you're quite,
- 21:48Speaker 2: busy quite into the fans love. You so The Blue
- 21:52Speaker 2: jays recipe for Success they brought in four free Agents, Santander, Suzer,
- 21:59Speaker 2: jimenez And. Stroke they really didn't account for a ton
- 22:03Speaker 2: of success one point seven war for those that are
- 22:06Speaker 2: interested in. That but what did this team do to
- 22:11Speaker 2: turn things? Around how do you go from a last
- 22:13Speaker 2: place club to A World series one out away from
- 22:17Speaker 2: winning a?
- 22:18Speaker 3: Club they really tried to start buying into, contact AND
- 22:23Speaker 3: i think Losing santander early in the season they had
- 22:27Speaker 3: to rearrange their entire kind of philosophy and thought.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Process Most ali's teams.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Are they're kind of those teams that they try and
- 22:34Speaker 3: slug you out of the. Ballpark and a minute that
- 22:37Speaker 3: they lost Some. TANDER i remember talking to hitting Coach David.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Hopkins he, said, look we just had to really rearrange
- 22:42Speaker 3: kind of what we were thinking about. Doing and they
- 22:44Speaker 3: had the personnel to really prioritize contact AND i think
- 22:47Speaker 3: in a day and, age they were a leg up
- 22:50Speaker 3: in terms of exposing so many bad defenses in the big.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Leagues back, when you, know i'd say ten to fifteen years,
- 22:58Speaker 3: ago if you couldn't play, defense you didn't play in
- 23:00Speaker 3: the big. Leagues, NOW i think over the last, five, six,
- 23:03Speaker 3: seven eight, years they're trading defense for some sort of
- 23:07Speaker 3: offensive capability that they deem worthy of taking over for
- 23:11Speaker 3: bad defenses because there's so many, strikeouts because there's so many,
- 23:14Speaker 3: walks because there's really not that many plays throughout a
- 23:17Speaker 3: Major league game as there used to. BE i think
- 23:19Speaker 3: The Blue jays, said, look we're going to put the
- 23:21Speaker 3: ball in play because of.
- 23:22Speaker 4: How we're set. Up we're going to see what.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Happens and they got buy in really quick from their star,
- 23:27Speaker 3: players AND i think that was huge and massive for
- 23:30Speaker 3: them that they had to get buy in from their best.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Players then once they started to see some of the
- 23:35Speaker 3: fruits of that labor and concentrating on putting the ball in,
- 23:38Speaker 3: play having less selfish at, bats and with the personnel
- 23:43Speaker 3: to do, it they were able to really start. Rolling
- 23:46Speaker 3: and they ended up making, it as you, said all
- 23:48Speaker 3: the way of The World. SERIES i do think that
- 23:51Speaker 3: the biggest thing for, them, though was getting that buy.
- 23:53Speaker 3: In and so whatever your philosophy, is you've got to
- 23:55Speaker 3: get it from the top. Down and, yes it's a
- 23:58Speaker 3: game played by individuals with a team, ofach but you
- 24:01Speaker 3: got to have something to hold on to because each
- 24:03Speaker 3: and every night you might be asked to do something.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Different my, opinion WHAT i saw from them is they
- 24:08Speaker 3: really grew as a selfless type of. Team if the
- 24:11Speaker 3: situation called to get someone, over they did. It and
- 24:16Speaker 3: they were able to really execute certain things that were
- 24:18Speaker 3: old school baseball terms and, principles and, hey it.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Worked you.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Know it took them all the way to The World,
- 24:23Speaker 3: series and guess they lost to The, dodgers but they
- 24:25Speaker 3: made it and they showed that old school principles still
- 24:28Speaker 3: can work and still can play at a high.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Level, well they were first in batting, average they were
- 24:35Speaker 2: fourth in, Runs they were second best in baseball at
- 24:41Speaker 2: not striking out or twenty, ninth but they were eleventh
- 24:46Speaker 2: in home, runs thirteenth and. Walks so all of these,
- 24:49Speaker 2: things AND i think the Point i'm trying to make
- 24:52Speaker 2: is The angels offense lest year was very one. Dimensional
- 24:55Speaker 2: in my, Opinion they hit a lot of home, runs
- 24:58Speaker 2: but they didn't do a lot else to generate. Rallies start,
- 25:02Speaker 2: rallies drive guys, in move guys over those. Elements WHILE
- 25:07Speaker 2: i Think Ron washington wanted to incorporate some of, IT
- 25:10Speaker 2: i don't know if maybe it's an organizational. Philosophy maybe
- 25:13Speaker 2: it's just the guys. THERE i know a lot of
- 25:16Speaker 2: them are. YOUNGER i think influenced by some of the
- 25:20Speaker 2: trends in the. GAME a lot of guys are incredibly pull,
- 25:24Speaker 2: happy AND i think if there, was you, know an,
- 25:27Speaker 2: area there's a, few But i'd like to see guys
- 25:29Speaker 2: using the whole field, more especially guys Like logan, O'hapi Joe.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Adell they have power to all, fields and when you
- 25:36Speaker 2: get locked in and trying to pull the, ball especially
- 25:40Speaker 2: pull the ball in the, air it can be very.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Limiting you're not going to take your hits the other.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Way you're not going to stay on some of those
- 25:45Speaker 2: off speed. Pitches and they also struck out a. TON
- 25:49Speaker 2: i believe they led the league in strikeouts twelve, thirteen
- 25:53Speaker 2: fourteen a game at, times and it kind of spirals
- 25:56Speaker 2: and The Blue jays didn't do. That you don't get
- 25:59Speaker 2: to The World series by striking out fifteen times a.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Game it may, happen but when you're facing the best,
- 26:04Speaker 2: pitchers you need to have the ability to put the
- 26:07Speaker 2: ball in, play and sometimes that is a. Single and
- 26:11Speaker 2: you know, WHAT i was always happy with a. SINGLE
- 26:14Speaker 2: a base. HIT a base hit in the major leagues
- 26:17Speaker 2: is really. Cool remember, that, guys and.
- 26:20Speaker 4: To two thousand, ops two thousand. Ops you know? WHAT
- 26:24Speaker 4: i Saw trumbo throughout the.
- 26:28Speaker 3: YEAR i saw veteran pitchers getting so ticked off trying
- 26:33Speaker 3: to navigate their way through The Blue jays lineup because
- 26:36Speaker 3: they got so pesky at trying not to strike. Out
- 26:40Speaker 3: you would see guys Like Blake.
- 26:41Speaker 4: SNeW i remember Watching Justin furlander literally step off the
- 26:45Speaker 4: back of the. Mountain was he forty something years, Old
- 26:47Speaker 4: he's seen it all In, toronto stepping off the back
- 26:50Speaker 4: of the, mountain like shaking his head because he had
- 26:52Speaker 4: thrown three perfect sliders To Ernie clement and he wouldn't strike,
- 26:56Speaker 4: out and at that point you knew you had him.
- 26:59Speaker 4: BEAT i saw it year in year. Out well that's
- 27:03Speaker 4: a terrible. Phrase let's try that. AGAIN i saw it
- 27:05Speaker 4: day and day out throughout the entire year that they
- 27:09Speaker 4: would frustrate these pictures because pitchers are so used to
- 27:13Speaker 4: getting to a certain, sequence throwing their best pitch and
- 27:15Speaker 4: getting either weak contact or more likely than, not a.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Strikeout and they really did something different to those pictures
- 27:23Speaker 3: and it was fun to watch kind of the game
- 27:25Speaker 3: change just a little bit kind of back to That oh,
- 27:28Speaker 3: wow like you can have a lot of success taking
- 27:32Speaker 3: what's given to you and then taking your shots when
- 27:35Speaker 3: you get. UP i had a coach one time, said,
- 27:36Speaker 3: look the first two strikes are. Yours the third strike
- 27:38Speaker 3: is the team the team.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Strike so if you.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Want to go for some loft out, front go, Ahead
- 27:43Speaker 3: but once you get to that third, strike then have
- 27:46Speaker 3: a good team at.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Bat AND i think that's what The Blue jays, did
- 27:48Speaker 4: and it was it was fun to watch all season.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Long that is fun to. Watch another Thing i'd like to,
- 27:54Speaker 2: say if you want a trum, bomb As i've been
- 27:58Speaker 2: told to, enjoy no popouts on the first pitch of,
- 28:01Speaker 2: it inning tired of. That it's not a good team at.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Bat it has no, place at least in my. Game
- 28:09Speaker 2: it wasn't something that we were player of my age
- 28:12Speaker 2: coming up that was frowned. Upon you either took the,
- 28:15Speaker 2: pitch or in the rare case that maybe you did
- 28:17Speaker 2: want to go you let The Howie. KENDRICK i can
- 28:19Speaker 2: vividly remember telling him at times very few BUT i, said,
- 28:23Speaker 2: HEY i might go early here IF i was hitting
- 28:25Speaker 2: in front of, him and he would gladly take the
- 28:28Speaker 2: pitch on the flip. Side BUT i think it's your,
- 28:30Speaker 2: duty sometimes as a leadof, hitter or most every, time
- 28:33Speaker 2: to have a somewhat of a team at. Bat you
- 28:37Speaker 2: may not be thrilled if you do take a strike
- 28:39Speaker 2: down the, middle but it sets up an inning better
- 28:41Speaker 2: than a weak infield pop. Up so there it. Is
- 28:44Speaker 2: you don't need to comment on, that BUT i think you.
- 28:47Speaker 4: MIGHT i love, It.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Okay they were also The Blue jays one last thing
- 28:50Speaker 2: on the. Team they were fourth in defensive runs, safe
- 28:53Speaker 2: so their defense got a lot. Better The angels did
- 28:56Speaker 2: not play great defense last. Year it's no. Secret they
- 28:58Speaker 2: did turn to one of double, plays but beyond that
- 29:02Speaker 2: it was not a. Strength AND i think The Blue,
- 29:05Speaker 2: jays no. DOUBT i don't have the stats in front of,
- 29:09Speaker 2: me but it seems like they, improved AND i thought
- 29:12Speaker 2: maybe it was more pitching and. Defense it turns out
- 29:15Speaker 2: in their case it was hitting and, defense as the
- 29:20Speaker 2: combined era for The jays was nineteenth and, baseball so
- 29:24Speaker 2: they had quality starting, pitching especially in the. Playoffs absolute
- 29:28Speaker 2: brilliant performances by a few of those. Guys but it
- 29:31Speaker 2: looks like the dynamic offense and the improved defense were
- 29:34Speaker 2: actually the keys for that ball. CLUB i want to
- 29:38Speaker 2: turn to the last topic THAT i really wanted to
- 29:41Speaker 2: get out of the. Way Ken rosenthal wrote a tremendous
- 29:44Speaker 2: article the other day covering New angels hitting Coach Brady,
- 29:47Speaker 2: anderson and there were quotes by, you and there were
- 29:52Speaker 2: some really cool insights into How brady helped you as
- 29:56Speaker 2: a minor. LEAGUER i believe you guys connected when you
- 29:58Speaker 2: were In DOUBLE, a and he seems to have a
- 30:01Speaker 2: very unique ability to get through to guys in the right.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Way sometimes it's, mental sometimes it's, physical but he really
- 30:11Speaker 2: does a good job of believing in the, player and
- 30:14Speaker 2: sometimes that's what it takes just for a guy that's
- 30:17Speaker 2: a little bit on the, fence that knows he can
- 30:19Speaker 2: play but hasn't had that. REASSURANCE i Think brady is
- 30:23Speaker 2: very very good at communicating that to. Guys another guy
- 30:26Speaker 2: that we, Signed Trey. MANCINI i saved him for this
- 30:29Speaker 2: segment because him And brady are very. Close it's no
- 30:34Speaker 2: secret you mentioned in the article as, Well so maybe
- 30:37Speaker 2: you could talk about your experiences With, brady and then
- 30:40Speaker 2: if you could Incorporate Trey mancini in as, well because
- 30:44Speaker 2: you were teammates with him for quite a while AND
- 30:45Speaker 2: i know you guys knew each.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Other.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Sure brady was. INCREDIBLE i remember getting to know
- 30:51Speaker 3: him after my third season In DOUBLE. A i broke
- 30:54Speaker 3: the game's played record In DOUBLE, a played four years,
- 30:56Speaker 3: there and had it not been For Brady, ANDERSON i
- 30:59Speaker 3: wouldn't have made the big. Leagues he saw talent in
- 31:02Speaker 3: me and solved belief in, me and he started pouring
- 31:05Speaker 3: that into. Me AND i felt LIKE i could play
- 31:07Speaker 3: in the big, leagues BUT i needed someone who had done,
- 31:10Speaker 3: it who had been, there who had experienced, that to
- 31:13Speaker 3: tell me THAT i had that ability and really believe in.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Me he was that person for me and then gave
- 31:19Speaker 3: me very specific goals and ways to attain those goals
- 31:23Speaker 3: to then get. THERE i trusted him at worked AND
- 31:26Speaker 3: i ended up playing in the big. Leagues he was
- 31:28Speaker 3: really big into. Nutrition this was ten twelve years. Ago
- 31:33Speaker 3: he was really big into. This he's kind of always
- 31:35Speaker 3: been a little bit.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Ahead of the.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Curve he was into the biomechanics of a lot of
- 31:38Speaker 3: different body movements before a lot of this stuff has
- 31:42Speaker 3: now been able to be tracked and stuff he was
- 31:45Speaker 3: thinking about all of this. Stuff he's a sports, fanatic
- 31:48Speaker 3: loves all different types of, sports loves the ins and
- 31:51Speaker 3: outs in all the different ways that athletes, perform not just.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Baseball he's very eccentric might be the right. Word he's
- 31:59Speaker 3: just very open but has his beliefs and so he's
- 32:03Speaker 3: able to connect with so many different types of.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Players and as you just, mentioned if you've got some.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Angel players that are they, believe but they're not totally
- 32:12Speaker 3: wholeheartedly all in like Saying mike trout, Is brady's.
- 32:16Speaker 4: The kind of guy that can get them to the next.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Level he's the kind of coach and teacher that can
- 32:21Speaker 3: really take these guys into a different, zone not only,
- 32:26Speaker 3: mentally but possibly physically as.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Well AND i JUST i love what he.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Brings he was a tremendous help getting to see him
- 32:33Speaker 3: work with a guy Like Trey mancini who was had
- 32:36Speaker 3: a lot of talent but wasn't like a, massive massively
- 32:39Speaker 3: high draft pick and then really kind of create his
- 32:43Speaker 3: mental fortitude to be able to get into the big.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Leagues and start to really perform and help him in
- 32:48Speaker 4: so many different.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Areas he works with pitchers as, well he knows both
- 32:52Speaker 3: sides of the, ball a pretty good batting practice thrower
- 32:56Speaker 3: for what it's.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Worth that always.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Helps but, yeah he's going to be able to do
- 33:01Speaker 3: a lot of different things in This angel's kind of,
- 33:04Speaker 3: offense so to, speak whether it be preparation and looking for,
- 33:09Speaker 3: trends whether it be physically even seeing a weakness in
- 33:14Speaker 3: the guy physically and being able to communicate that with
- 33:16Speaker 3: the training staff nutritionally, speaking mentally, speaking he can cover
- 33:19Speaker 3: a multitude of different. Zones and, YEAH i think getting
- 33:23Speaker 3: to watch him work With, tray especially as a younger.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Player me being kind of past that.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Tutorship if that's even a, word if you, know after
- 33:33Speaker 3: like three or four years INTO i can kind of
- 33:34Speaker 3: watch him kind of recycle back Around. Trey it was
- 33:36Speaker 3: fun to watch him kind of take him under his
- 33:38Speaker 3: wing and watch him do his thing with With. Tray
- 33:41Speaker 3: AND i think he's got that ability still now to
- 33:43Speaker 3: do that with a bunch of These angels, Players so
- 33:45Speaker 3: don't be surprised if you see a guy like you,
- 33:48Speaker 3: know maybe maybe it Is Joe adele who's been, good not,
- 33:51Speaker 3: great but it shows flashes of.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Greatness maybe hit a prolonged length of.
- 33:57Speaker 3: Really good, PLAY i would, say without, question And brady
- 34:00Speaker 3: will have some sort of impact if that.
- 34:02Speaker 2: HAPPENS i think it's really interesting Because brady And John
- 34:06Speaker 2: maybray are two very experienced baseball. Men they are not
- 34:12Speaker 2: the trendy highers that are happening around the. Game and
- 34:17Speaker 2: some of these guys have had tremendous. Success David popkins
- 34:19Speaker 2: is a younger. GUY i came from The, twins If
- 34:22Speaker 2: i'm not, mistaken and had excellent. RESULTS i, mean he
- 34:26Speaker 2: really did a very nice. Job BUT i think The
- 34:28Speaker 2: angels are going to benefit from an ex player in this,
- 34:32Speaker 2: Case i'd like to see more in the. Game it's right,
- 34:35Speaker 2: now it's not a popular time for ex players to
- 34:40Speaker 2: you don't get. Hired, frankly it is, interesting but The
- 34:43Speaker 2: angels have kind of bucked the trend and their entire
- 34:46Speaker 2: staff essentially are the opposites of what everyone else is.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Doing SO i think MAYBE i know college coaches seem
- 34:54Speaker 2: to be also all the, rage but The angels are
- 34:58Speaker 2: kind of going against the grain and see how it.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Goes BUT i am a big. Fan i've said that
- 35:02Speaker 2: previously previous, episodes BUT i think it should be really.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Good is there anything ELSE i know that you cover
- 35:09Speaker 2: The Blue, jays but The. Angels what do you think
- 35:13Speaker 2: is in the? Cards i've SAID i think five hundred
- 35:16Speaker 2: would be an excellent goal for a ball club that
- 35:19Speaker 2: is trying to work its way back. UP i remember
- 35:22Speaker 2: the first TIME i was with The. Diamondbacks we were
- 35:25Speaker 2: coming off a very lousy year And tony The. Russa
- 35:28Speaker 2: this was the only time we had a meeting at
- 35:30Speaker 2: the end of the. Season usually the last game of the,
- 35:33Speaker 2: year you pack, up you're, out you, know you say goodbye.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Whatever sometimes you do that before the game kind of
- 35:39Speaker 2: it's just. Understood we had a team meeting at the
- 35:43Speaker 2: end of the year and he, said, look our goal
- 35:45Speaker 2: is to be five hundred next. Year AND i, said,
- 35:48Speaker 2: wow it was really. INTERESTING i didn't expect, it didn't
- 35:52Speaker 2: expect a, meeting BUT i started to wrap my head around,
- 35:54Speaker 2: it And i've thought about it in subsequent you, know
- 35:56Speaker 2: as the time has gone on AND i said that
- 35:58Speaker 2: was really smart because it acknowledges that that is a
- 36:02Speaker 2: goal that is. Reasonable you, know if you're a guy
- 36:05Speaker 2: that's a career two fifty hitter and you want to
- 36:08Speaker 2: hit three twenty might be a little bit, tough you
- 36:11Speaker 2: might get discouraged for a team like, this and The
- 36:13Speaker 2: Blue jays vastly surpassed. That SO i, think you, know
- 36:17Speaker 2: these are my own, Thoughts but what do you think
- 36:19Speaker 2: with the club that, is you, know kind of searching
- 36:21Speaker 2: for a new, identity what kind of goals would you
- 36:24Speaker 2: would you?
- 36:24Speaker 3: See, YEAH i like It trump just Because seattle is
- 36:29Speaker 3: going to be really. Good don't sleep on The. Athletics
- 36:33Speaker 3: can't Say oakland. ANYMORE i MEAN i did that series
- 36:36Speaker 3: against The athletics and they've got some sneaky good pieces over.
- 36:39Speaker 4: There that first.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Basement, KURTZ i think his, name he's, well he's he's
- 36:43Speaker 3: a big old. Boy but you just look at the.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Division you've Got, houston.
- 36:46Speaker 4: They're going to.
- 36:47Speaker 3: REBOUND i mean they were WENT mia for the first
- 36:49Speaker 3: time in how many.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Years, yeah it's a tough.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Division it's IT'S i think five hundred would be a
- 36:56Speaker 3: very attainable type. Goal you're gonna have to get really
- 36:58Speaker 3: nice productions out of a lot a lot of the
- 37:00Speaker 3: guys we talked About, romano you, know even some of
- 37:03Speaker 3: these new, guys like Even siri coming in maybe doing.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Something minoa's gonna have to probably show. Up it's going
- 37:09Speaker 3: to be a battle to get to five, hundred but
- 37:10Speaker 3: you've got at some point you've got to kind of
- 37:13Speaker 3: set a, goal attain, it and then see what you
- 37:16Speaker 3: have with not only a branded coaching, staff but with
- 37:18Speaker 3: some of these players that are kind of getting to
- 37:20Speaker 3: the point of all, right is he one of us
- 37:22Speaker 3: or are we going to have to find someone? Else
- 37:24Speaker 3: some of these, players in my, opinion in the system
- 37:26Speaker 3: are hitting that point where it's, like are we either
- 37:28Speaker 3: going to extend you or is your leash running?
- 37:31Speaker 4: Out so at five, HUNDRED i think it's a good.
- 37:33Speaker 3: Goal tough, division but, look that place is so awesome
- 37:37Speaker 3: to play. AT i mean when they play the song
- 37:40Speaker 3: and the rally, MONKEY i, mean come, on, like even
- 37:42Speaker 3: as a visiting, player it's. Fun it's fun to play,
- 37:44Speaker 3: there the weather's, awesome they got cool. FANS i still
- 37:49Speaker 3: can't figure out why people don't want to go To
- 37:51Speaker 3: anaheim or why AND i can't win you, KNOW i
- 37:54Speaker 3: just was not Even Anaheim.
- 37:56Speaker 4: La whatever they call it, now you Know Los Angeles. Angels, yeah,
- 38:00Speaker 4: yeah so it's, both, right it's. BOTH i really wish.
- 38:04Speaker 3: That they could kind of get back into contention because
- 38:06Speaker 3: it's fun being able to watch kind of the red
- 38:09Speaker 3: and white out.
- 38:09Speaker 4: There do.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Well, WELL i really appreciate you taking the. Time you
- 38:14Speaker 2: provided exactly WHAT i was looking for as the more
- 38:18Speaker 2: polished of the two of. Us you are paid to do.
- 38:21Speaker 4: This for a little not, true not.
- 38:22Speaker 2: True, no that was very nice of. You i'm sure
- 38:25Speaker 2: the fans will enjoy. It and thank you for being
- 38:28Speaker 2: our guest.
- 38:29Speaker 4: Today you got. It thanks for having me
