- 0:26[SPEAKER_02]: What's up, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Scouting the Fans, I'm your co-host, Who Sound Patel.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_02]: We're part of the three-year-on-spiracary podcast network, which is also part of the five reasons sports network.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm joined by my co-host Coach Smith Coach, how we doing today.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm doing well as we're talking about off air before this, you know, getting ready for our high scope camp, leaving tomorrow morning.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted to get this one in before we left.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, today we are bringing back a guest that we had last off season.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now, these are first return guests.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: One of the top minds in offensive breakdowns.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: And if you've been following the Dolphins under Mike McKinney, you've probably come across some of his offensive manuals.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: And he's written this for all three seasons under the manual.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: And he's also got a bunch of other teams.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: I've got all three of the dolphins ones on my shelf.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: They're definitely must reads to anyone that wants to understand the offense on the highlight reel.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: His work bridges that, you know, the film study, the trends and the schemes.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: We're looking forward to once again tapping into his insights on what Miami's looking at for the two thousand, twenty five seasons.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: So, I want to welcome back to scouting the fans, Bobby Peters.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for having me guys excited to chat about the Dolphins offense.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, man.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you written what the last three seasons of the Dolphins under my Daniel, you know, both of us read in the twenty twenty two twenty twenty three and twenty twenty twenty four game planning.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: But last year when you were on the show, we were really excited to see the evolution of my Daniel's offense.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm twenty twenty three to twenty twenty four, but there's a bit of a step back.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously some due to his injuries and some other stuff as well.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: So what are your thoughts on the Dolphins twenty twenty four offensive performance?
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so, you know, from where I, from where I sit, they were still incredibly interesting, like scheme wise, they did a lot of really good stuff still, you know, I think we, you know, a lot is made of, you know, the dolphins have a very hyper specific offense.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: There's certain things that they want to do and they're going to do every week regarding
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: listen what the defense is doing, and they find ways to get that done.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: And Eric, I know you're a high school coach too, and myself is a high school coach, like when you're going through a season, there's things that you do well, and you've got to find ways to kind of dress them up and find ways to get to them.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Mike potato does a great job at that.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously, there's still some holes in it often.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Often, see whether it be personnel, eyes, or skin eyes, there's still some things that I think they could tap into, that I think could help them out, kind of round out and make more and more full attacks.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, as you know, the dolphins traded Johnny Smith to the Steelers.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, mommy has to find a way to replace that production.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think part of it's going to be a heavier workload for Tiger Hill and Jaylen wobble just naturally going back to that.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure how much Nick West for Vicki and the new, you know, big, wide receiver three.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: They brought in as well as Darren Waller who I'm not sure how much you've watched, but based on what you saw from
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: My name is offense.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think they're going to struggle to replace the type of targets that Johnny was getting in this system, you know, with that combination of guys?
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think, you know, I have, I have watched a decent amount of Darren Wall.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: I wrote a book on the twenty-twenty raiders, and obviously that was, you know, five years.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: years ago now, but I think his skill set fits into what how Miami wanted to use even at an ageing, you know, even as, you know, five years older than he was back then.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think even as he ages, I think his skill set fits what John or Smith was trying was was doing for them last year.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of those underneath kind of those check shallows where he's got freedom to sit over the ball or kind of continue on the running.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's man.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then even some other need to choice routes.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Darren Waller was one of the best him and Hunter Renforer to the best choice.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: I start out runners that I've studied and all the different manuals I've done.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I noticed, you have towards the back half of the season last year, Mick Daniel started to dip his toes back into the choice concept package or something that he really had used a ton of with, you know, when Waterland Hill were kind of, you know, the feature guys that were getting into different, different other aspects of their offense.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, you know, I don't know if, you know, it's an apples to apples comparison, but I think that what we can do some of the stuff they were trying to do with Smith.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: You're saying that, you know, the,
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: One jail on water on Tyric Hill who didn't get the ball.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: It seemed as if the dolphins kind of lacked an answer in routes, but you're saying that they had choice routes built in.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_02]: So let's talk about those choice routes with John Nusenith.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: Some folks, I kind of hinted at
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: And we kind of see it through the midway point of the twenty twenty four season.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: He was the only one keeping the dolphins offense alive.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: He was more so the breaking class break the glass in case of emergency.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: Is there like a schematic fix to integrate, you know, titans better in this offense now that.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_02]: John Newsmith has gone, we have Darren Waller, Julian Hill who is primarily, you know, a point of attack blocker, or is this more so if philosophical decision that McDaniel intentionally deprioritizes tied in usage?
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think so that's philosophical.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think especially going back to the twenty two season, when I think of the Miami Dolphins offense, I think of what I call like, I call it like the eighteen yard stem family.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: So like what these routes are, their routes have breaking with like fifteen to eighteen.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: So those are those deep, deep cuts over the middle.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: They're deep bench routes like those deep come back.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: from the outside, and then any sort of like double moves or like high crossers that kind of fit into that family of concepts too.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, we got Tyra Kill and Jalen Wattle, they're tremendous down the field at separating.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: So like you're gonna live in that world.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: Doing so, those routes are the primaries.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: And then the tight ends and the running backs are kind of just like they'll chip protection or they'll check their protection responsibility, then they'll run flat.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: So they'll run those little shallow routes or over the ball routes that we were talking about.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: And they're kind of just like the check down the afterthought.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think once, you know, teams,
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know, start to take in a way the stuff down field, whether it be with two high coverages or, you know, different brackets and stuff that's I think when those tight ends have to be able to work and separate against the underneath coverage.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I think there's, you know, like I said, they started using choice routes more a little bit because they were like, all right, we're getting, you know, we're getting the stuff bracketed down field.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let's not have to hold out of the ball.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: Let's feature the guy underneath as the primary on those concepts and in doing so you're going to get the tight ends going to get more touches.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: So, you're talking about anolo's kind of afterthought so you talk about Nick Westbrookihina.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: Again, he was brought in to be that big body, wide receiver, three that has to block in a high level in this offense.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: And that seems like it's been something that Miami's been trying to find since McDonald got here and turned to somebody that can do that consistently.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: And you've written books over the last three seasons.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: And how important is why the receiver blocking in this microcade offense?
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: And do you see West Virginia being a needle louver compared to what they've had in the past in that role?
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's absolutely critical.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think, you know, those years, you know, when when whether Mike was in San Francisco or even those these recent years when he's when he's been gone, their best rushing seasons come when their receivers are very involved in the run game.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: Now, there's a few different types of locks.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's like, you know, most injured's man at the point of attacks, like when you run an outside zone, you know, they're, you know, and some versions are responsible for doing out of safety that's driving into the run fit quickly.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: At the point of attacks to their block is literally like in the hole that the ball is attended to run to.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: And then something that the dolphins that I've touched on a lot, you know, in previous books and even in this one is their crack toss and their crack seal concepts.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: So what those do is they were
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: require a wide receiver to pin the n-man on the line of scrimmage.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: But when you do that, the ball gets forced to the perimeter very quickly and very easily, especially when you got the speed that the dolphins have had over the years of the running back position.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: Now that block, it's not an easy block, right?
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're asking receiver to pin, you know, it's a four-down front, you know, like a Nick Bosa type, right?
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: Or, you know, again, it's like the five-down front, you know, like a collium act, like a stand-up backer type, right?
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like so there's
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's not an easy block, but if you can get a guy who can do that and make that pin down block and block that guy down for one or two counts, I think, you know, we've seen what happens in the Dolphins run game when the block can get to the perimeter.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, just remember, you know, the best example is that Broncos game from two years ago, right?
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: They were just crushing the Broncos on crack toss and cracks.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, those wide receivers were just having to date with that block.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I think when this offense is at their best, that block is at the, you know, at that block has been at the focal point of the system.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you talked about that Broncos game where they put up seventy points in the McDaniel era.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: He's only had two games where the starting offensive linemen from camp to regular season have actually played and some of that is due to injury, some of that is due.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: to other stuff, but outside of the offensive line and wide receivers, running back some tight ends aren't off the hook either.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: Coach and I noticed a lot of issues with the protection pickups and lead blocking from Raheemoster, Devana chain, Alec Engel, Julian Hill, and even John Newsmith.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: It seems as if the dolphins were trying to gear up more so towards eleven personnel in the run game.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_02]: What are some things that, you know, that position group can clean up to lead to a more effective run game against those four down fronts, or even five down fronts in eleven personnel?
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like you said, like you alluded to, there were definitely a fair amount of busts upfront, right?
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: Where guys are working to, you know, they might, nobody's working up to the place I'd back or you get two guys on the place I'd back or no, let's go into the backs I'd lie back.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I think some of that, some of that's due to the amount of volume that dolphins carry in the run game.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: For someone like me trying to study and learn, it's a lot of fun because I like volume and I like seeing all the different variations, but if you're running, if you're carrying too much week to week, guys can get confused.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think some of that is, during the week, having making sure your guys understand the game plan, making sure it's concise enough yet expansive enough to still take advantage of the defense the way you want to.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: But at the same thing at the end of the day, communication with a line of scrimmage is huge.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: If your guys aren't talking up front, okay, who's working to who are we, who are we reaching, who are we accounting for you, whether it be in the run game or in the past protection too, if you've got
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: you know, linebackers or secondary players running free at the quarterback.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: Well, somebody's somebody's responsible for that, right?
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: Whether it's the offensive line, the running back or even the quarterback, you know, the quarterback's thrown hot off that, right?
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: It just depends on what depends on the protection and depends on, you know, who the offensive line works to in that case.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: So, I think communication before the ball is snapped is something that could definitely improve.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: And do you find that to be something that's an issue across the NFL?
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think through our weekly reviews and watching some of these plays, it seemed like at times that Mike McDonald is using motion to try to create leverage, try to create numbers and advantages.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: And when it works, it looks great.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: But there's other times, like you mentioned Bobby about getting confused about those second little blocks and where they're going.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: And at the time, he ended up with a pretty defender running through.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a result of a safety that's rolling down that wasn't part of that box count originally.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: Is that something that you see across the league?
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Or is that more prominent in Miami just because the number of emotions they run?
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably exacerbated because of how many motions they run and that's a great point that I that I failed to bring up is the fact that motion affects all of that right like I know specifically there's a few teams that I that I that I know for fact they have whenever they have motion their pass protection call changes even though it's the same pass protection to account for the motions.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: So the offensive line understands, okay, there's a guy moving across the formation, right?
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to change, you know, once we get up to the line, the post snap pictures is going to change just because of the motion and how the defense is going to react to it.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: So to your point, motion is a huge effect on that and how, you know, you know, a place I backward could turn into a backside lineback or, you know, based on motion or vice versa, right?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, obviously because of all the motion, my aim uses, I think that's, like I said, exacerbated.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's definitely seen throughout the league, but the teams that are obviously, the teams that can minimize those when you're minimizing your negative plays and, you know, busted assignments, you know, they're going to be the better offenses in the league.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, it's about that personnel you should back to a level of personnel.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_02]: The dolphins use a lot of twenty one and the level of personnel.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: And twenty one and even in the eleven personnel, there were two primary players who were
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: the force players are specifically the F position.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_02]: That was Alec Engold and John Euse Smith.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: With those formation tendencies, do you think it became easier for those defensive to diagnose even with the motions?
- 13:15[SPEAKER_02]: Was there any talent in terms of route concepts or protection schemes or where the run was flowing to?
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: One, both of them were motioning or in the game?
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think this one,
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I mean, you know, obviously there could be a defensive staff that picked something up, but as someone who has gone, you obviously gone through every clip, and obviously I've written about a lot of the stuff that we're talking about.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: for the most part, the dolphins do a good job, especially in the run game of like the motion one way, they'll attack that way.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: If defense is over playing it, they'll motion one way and then they'll run something back the other way too.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: So the way they use motion doesn't usually, doesn't usually tip off what's going on.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think in some cases it does, but for the most part, there's not huge tendencies, like I actually just wrote and Vikings book this off season.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: And especially
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: And early down, if you show me their formation and you know, and I know it's first in ten, I could narrow the run, the run play called down to about maybe two to three concepts.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: And when I can do that sitting for my computer, you know, at my house, I think, you know, I felt defensive coordinators are on to that as well.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: So they're definitely the dolphins definitely don't have any major towels when it comes to that.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: So there's some kind of alluded to this earlier talking about continuity along the offensive line.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a lot of us dolphins fans feel like Austin Jackson going down.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: Towards the middle of the season, there was a big turning point in terms of the offensive line and their ability to run the ball.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: As somebody who has watched every dolphin snap from the year of the year, did you also see a big drop off in what they were capable to do in the running game after Austin Jackson went out versus what they were able to do in the first half of the season?
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that's fair.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: And then obviously, we can discuss the extent of it.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I think, I mean, you know, there's better than myself as an offensive language, the continuity is huge.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then if you're, if you don't have continuity, you know, being able to communicate that stuff and and create and continuity on the fly, that's critical then.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: So I think.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's very hard for teams that don't, you know, I always feel like every year the best offense is in the league or at least the teams that end up towards the top of the NFL record wise and points wise, like we get to the playoffs.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, yeah, these guys have started fifteen of the seventeen games together, right?
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Or, you know, it's like, oh, that's funny how that works.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I think there's definitely a trend where if you've got continuity upfront, it usually ends up pretty well for the offense.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go ahead and evaluate to a tongue-by-law for a little bit.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_02]: When defensive started rotating post-nap or taking away those first reads, and you're paying how did he hold up on tape?
- 15:55[SPEAKER_02]: You think, but there were any recurring blind spots, processing concerns, were there weeks where he plateaued, were there weeks that he declined?
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think this year, he did a much better job taking the checkdown if that stuff wasn't there down the field.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he did a pretty good job of that.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: Now, there's still instances where I feel like he wants to throw that first window, he wants to throw that first read and there's corebacks in the NFL that did.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's like Sam Darnell did that a ton last year.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: He probably forced a few too many and he ended up almost in the MVP discussion, right?
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I think having that is good as a quarterback, because when you take the back up, so we're in that was gone.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: And the backups just were like, they did not want to push those windows as much as two a did.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, no, I wouldn't say, you know, and then obviously, you know, was too...
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: will completely healthy down the stretch too.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think that kind of factors into some of the discussion, but I don't know if he necessarily, there were plenty of clips, and I tried to outline them in my book, too, just because I think when a quarterback takes a check down, it's like the play worked, the design of the play worked, right?
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: The defense took away what they were supposed to, but with the quarterback's getting to a check down on the offense, it's still getting ten, fifteen yards.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: That's what you want to see, because you're not always going to get that first guy open, right?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: And anybody, any coach can sit here and try to draw first guy open, but it takes,
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: It takes a real sound offensive scheme and system to create the route structure around that primary receiver to.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, all of the Stoffens fans would like to say you're going to say that two is going to play every game in two thousand twenty five, but if you miss this game, it's not going to really surprise anyone either.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: They paid a decent amount of money to bring in.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: Zach Wilson has the number two and they drafted Quinn viewers at a Texas.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: to replace, you know, Skyletons and Tyler Hutley and Tim Boyle.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: Do you feel that Zach Wilson, you know, that him specifically compared to the other, compared to viewers, sets my ending up in a better position to be able to win games if two does have to misappearative games again in P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think he probably gives you a little bit better play than than what we were seeing previously, right?
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: And like, you know, he's better on the NFL.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's been a couple systems now.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe, you know, you know, McDaniel can build a game plan for him, but, you know, for a few weeks here and there, but I just, I don't know.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously, you know, we're talking about a backup quarterback position, right?
- 18:14[SPEAKER_01]: These guys, you know, very few guys in the league, you know, can, can really separate themselves, you know, in that regard.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: But I think, like you said, especially with two as injury history, I would have liked to see a more, you know,
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what their options were available, right?
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I say this, you know, as someone who doesn't necessarily know what they had available to them, but I would like to see them beef up this backup quarterback position a little more than just that Wilson.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they beefed it up just based on trying to get some type of schematic value, throw power, and a little bit of knowledge of this scheme.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: Overall, with quintuvers coming from the Sark system, Zach Wilson coming from the La Floura Shannon scheme as well.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_02]: In your opinion, based on this scheme, do you think the ceiling of this offense is tied to two as limitations?
- 19:03[SPEAKER_02]: Or is it more about scheme evolution from a Daniel?
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's both.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: There's definitely scheme evolution.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins do a lot of stuff really well.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: Especially focused on this with them, but this is definitely something I've noticed throughout that NFL.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: Last year, some of the best offences using the screen game in the NFL really took a step forward.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think Mike McDaniel did often throughout the forefront of that.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think teams were copying a lot of what he was doing.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_01]: They took rules on traditional screens and modified them a little bit to try to make them more efficient and it worked.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: And then they even called some newer screens that I really haven't seen a ton of.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_01]: So I helped my a ton of those in my twenty four book because they were easy, easy ways to create yards and space for for fast guys, right?
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: with that said, they ran a ton of them.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of relied on them probably a little bit too much in certain situations.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that especially with the backup quarterback's in, right?
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: They were trying to throw their bang or drift route a ton and then they would try to throw screens.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: That was basically it, right?
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: There was an a ton else there.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think that over reliance on certain aspects of the offense, they've got to be able to pivot at times.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: They were really setting the trend in the NFL with that, but when you rely on it too much, I think it does create that ceiling of the offense.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: They need to be able to tap into other aspects of their system.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think this back to the offensive line a little bit here.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that again, watching all these snaps that you'd agree there was an opportunity for the Dolphins guard play to improve from twenty-two thousand twenty-four and their, you know, big for agent signing was James Daniels at one guard and they traded up for Jonas of Iania at Arizona in the second round.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know, how important
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: is improved guard play to the success of this offense.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: I know that me watching it, like I've always felt like the tackles and the centers were more important in these outside zones schemes than the guards, but obviously for the dolphins there was room for improvement at the guard position as well.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think where the dolphins could create even more explosives.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I think at their best, they're good about this is when those guards have to get up to the second level, taking a good angle to get up to the second level, getting bodies on those backers, getting those backers, you know, creating that
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: that that that that cohesion with the linebacker so that the linebacker can't you know scrape off and then make the tackle at five yards right because if you get these guys like in you know if you get dolphins running backs in space they've shown over the years they can take it to the house and you know when they're out there best those guards you know especially without side zones you know all the different ways Miami
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: can call those and run those to create, you know, to get to capture the edge, plus all the different crack tosses and crack seals.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: We've discussed, you know, that's great.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_01]: We secure the edge, but if your linebackers flowing over the top and we're not getting a guard on them, then, you know, we're making a tackle, you know, at five yards, you know, five yards, fast line of scrim.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: So when those guards are playing their best, and if they're getting up to that second level, that's when you see the the house calls.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and there were not a lot of house calls for a Miami last season, just because of how the offensive line injuries went and to being out.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: What defense of Corners want to do specifically in the run game and the offensive line is attack the weakest offensive line.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_02]: Structurally and schematically, the offense of line works as a whole.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_02]: So when defensive coordinators are scheming up these pressures or these stunts are trying to disrupt, either as from the pickers or the looperator simulated pressure.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_02]: from defensive backs.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_02]: I'll does this scheme account for that for an offensive lineman or two for the Miami Dolphins case.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it was the two guards for the dolphins.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_02]: How does that this game account for lower level talent?
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: So, specifically the past protection, I think what you need to, what needs to be sound is obviously assignment sound, right?
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: We have to have answers, who's responsible for who, whether, like I said, whether it's the offensive line, running back or the quarterback, we have to, that has to be clear.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: And for most part, you know, in the NFL, that usually is clear.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: But you're specific to the looks that you're seeing each week, right?
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: So sometimes you might get an unscathed look, but you still have to have rules in place to help guys out with that.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: So having that crystal clear and then pre-snap communication, I think getting up to the line of scrimmage, you know, and not a ton of is on the quarterback protection wise in the shannahan system, right?
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: And Mike McLean, obviously, I think it hears too a lot of that when it comes to this protection.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, the offensive line sliding to the potential threat that could be blitzing, right?
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: That, you know, not working to a batter that's dropping into coverage, right?
- 23:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, making sure that the running backs not on, you know, the fifth rusher, or, you know, if they were only a simulated pressure,
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're not sliding to a guy, you know, we're not sliding to, you know, one down offensive linemen and our running backs picked up the fourth guy, right?
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think making sure we're turning the protection to the possible, the potential blitz threats, I think could help them out because obviously if we're working to that, now we're getting our best, our best blockers on their on their blitzers coming from depth.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I think
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: When you're sounding those areas, you allow your offensive linemen, number one, they're putting better positions physically on the field, but also they're giving the confidence that they're going to be able to play better because they're being put in good positions, going adequately.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_02]: Coach, do you think Lee and Mike and Berg and Robert Jones were put in good positions or do you think it was just a talent level for those two guards last season?
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's a tough one for me to answer.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you go through the book, I didn't, I wasn't going through it with like a path for
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: section of valuation standpoint, but I
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's definitely teams and this is, you know, I think we can all remember the Super Bowl incident where, you know, Brock pretty got pressured on that fourth down with an unlocked guy coming in.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's definitely some issues with the shanty hand style of past protection.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_01]: And when you watch it on tape, you know, defenses can take advantage of it.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I think there's definitely ways, you know, that they can be helped out scheme wise.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time, like I said, I don't know, I didn't specifically, I wasn't, you know, if a guard got beer, a center got beat in past protection, I wasn't, I usually didn't
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm right about that clip and the game planning books.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_01]: I would usually, you know, that's like something crazy was caught my eye with the downfield stuff.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: But, um, no, I think there's definitely scheme ways they can help them, right?
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: But, um, yeah.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_02]: Go to myth.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_02]: That's the question for you, too.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're the much better one.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: You asked the wrong person.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that if everything worked out perfectly, right, if you had to seventy five percent from Toronto, and then you had in two thousand twenty four,
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: and you had Austin Jackson all year.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you could have essentially gotten by with Lee and like converting Rob Jones at the guards.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: They obviously had their limitations.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: They talked about it earlier.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: I thought the fall off really occurred when Austin Jackson was injured and that kind of exposed them.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure how big of a difference it makes in, if we had the same issues at tackle, but at least we're taking a step in the right direction to try to mitigate some of that.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: Bobby, you wrote about the, in the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year of the year
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: Are there things from that, two thousand, twenty-three Texans offense that's different than what you saw with the Miami offense that you feel like they can bring and that we could look for this coming year?
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and I'm glad you brought this up.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: I love Bobby Slovak team and back up with Mike McDonald's annual because I think his fit on this staff makes a lot of sense.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think he can help round out those five and seven steps past concept families.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, I think Miami's been kind of lacking in the last couple of years.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think the Texans, especially in twenty three, I mean, they have it.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: Trust me, they have plenty issues in twenty four, especially protection wise, but past concept wise, they were getting guys open.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: They were, they were guys open and they, they tied a lot of things really well together.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously, I, like you said, I outlined a lot of that in my twenty three Texans book.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: When you take the best of that and you bring it in with what Miami does as well, I think you're now we're really creating like, you know, like a like kind of that souped up like version of the forty-nineers offense that we all remember, you know, over the last few years.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I absolutely love him coming on staff and I'm hoping that that marriage works well.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_02]: Do you think that specific wrinkle or adjustment on the five seven set drops could solve those recurring offensive stalls, especially situationally on third downs and potentially red zone snaps?
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because we're getting because what what what what they were doing is they're getting the primary receiver open.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: So you're getting the ball out sooner, right?
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: You're corebacks not having to look to two to three to four to, you know, we're not asking the offensive line to block as long so we're getting the ball out sooner and you're building confidence.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: If two of us at his best, so he's getting the ball at the top of his drop, letting the thing rip right, you know, getting the ball out quick.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, when you've got sound five and seven step concepts, that's, you know, in your game planning guys open on that regard.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's what every coach in the NFL.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's their job.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: I was talking to someone in the league that's on a coaching staff a month or two ago and you know he said it's especially an offensive pass game side.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's a race to who can who can design the first read in the progression open as many times as you can in a game.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of like what coaches are trying to do and what they're paid to do.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's Bobby Sloc did a pretty good job of that.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: When he was in Houston, I think combining that with the talent that Miami has and what they're good at, you know, on a perfect right outside running game with outside don't crack toss the screen game.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think once you tie all that together, I think we're really work working with something here.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, what they really struggle with the dolphins to have over the last two to three seasons is
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: cover two inverted cover two and cover four concepts.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_02]: So hands those hand those wrinkles or adjustments help to minimize the downside against two and four.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's, so yeah, it's very true.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely noticed, especially like, too, and right, I remember, I was like a Houston game that had gave it trouble.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_01]: Some of that, that's, the concepts themselves, yes, you can work concepts and you can call stuff that makes it less of an issue, right?
- 29:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think some of that is game plan and then diagnosing coverage too.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, there's definitely some concepts that can get to that can help with that, but I think once seeing on tape, okay, that gave us trouble last year, I think there's ways that they can,
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, obviously, fix the past game.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I, I, you know, I'd like to see some of the stuff that's slow used in twenty three to kind of help mitigate some of that.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: So looking back over two thousand twenty four and all the snaps that you watched of the dolphin, we talked about a lot of different names here in terms of skill positions for the dolphins.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_00]: Is there any players that when you are watching that you felt
- 29:44[SPEAKER_00]: Should've gotten the ball more, right?
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: Or would've sure've been involved more that, you know, maybe we should look at.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: seeing stuff in next year.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that necessarily.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think when I think of that question, I think of the scheme diversity, I think of finding different ways to get those guys to the ball, right?
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like obviously, Tyre Kill needs touches.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen Wilde needs touches.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_01]: John O'Smith needed touches, right?
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: You got the backs coming out of the backfield that needed touches.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think obviously just, and even just read, and some guys are gonna get more touches, you know, some weeks than other weeks, right?
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: Just depending on game playing, depending on how the defense plays it to.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, you know,
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Rounding out the scheme and kind of the aspects of that, I think the offense will feel more well rounded and then got different guys are gonna get touches at different times then too.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Bobby, you always bring into all twenty two lens to the discussion that fans rarely get.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll round it out with this very last question.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_02]: The Miami Dolphins played the Indianapolis cold week one and they've changed their coordinator from Gus Bradley to Lou and Arumo.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_02]: If you were scripting the Miami's first fifteen plays against Lou and Arumo's defense, what would be your goal in those early calls?
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: I love the question.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Luana Ramo is a king of disguise.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: He likes to disguise coverage really well.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: And he'll play a lot of different coverages, too.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think if I remember correctly, they'd base out of a four down front.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_01]: So run game wise, I'd like to see them get into twenty one personnel and try to hammer some of their full flow outside don't stuff.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think, especially if they stay in a four down front, I think you can capture the edge and get two double teams at the point of attack against those looks.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: Pass game, I would like to see less play actions and more like
- 31:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like if some of those five seven step stuff, the drop-back stuff that we're talking about, I think that allows the quarterback to see those disguises better, right?
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: So like we're talking about like that two-invert stuff, if you're, if you, if the quarterback turns his back to the defense because he's played, because he's play-faking, right?
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then the defense is rotates to a two-invert, that middle-safety's just standing there now, right?
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: And the quarterback was expecting him to back that, so he didn't see the rotation whatsoever.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: So I think against the coach that likes to disguise a lot, I think just straight drop-backs allows him to kind of see the rotation and the movement
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: and it allows him to kind of work through his progression from that standpoint.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_01]: So probably those two aspects, I would, that would be my starting point.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, I'd love to see, you know, the dolphins are such a good end around team.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I'd love to see them around in those first fifteen plays too.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: And then maybe one of their creative screens as well.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, Bobby, thank you so much for coming on and working people, find your lives, work at.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so my website has a lot of my stuff on there, just alert the posts.com.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then my Twitter, I'm pretty active on Twitter too.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: You can see a lot of the stuff I'm working on and sharing on there.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: My handle is B, underscore, Peter's Twelve.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: And then if you're really looking for the deep dives on my books are on Amazon, I've got an author page.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: You can search my author pages linked in the books and then menu bar for my website too, so you can go there or you can just Google my name and you know, an Amazon link to some of that stuff will come up as well.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of different places you can find me.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you Bobby for coming on and coach.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for being such an amazing co-host.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_02]: You can stick with us here on Scouting the Finns part of it, the Grants Precary podcast and the Fire Region Sports Network as always.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_02]: Go Finns, baby.
