- 0:00Welcome back to fostering faith. My name is Tracie
- 0:03and I'm going to be your host today. And today
- 0:04we're going to be talking about a topic that
- 0:06has just kind of been in scripture for me for
- 0:10the last couple of weeks. And so I just thought
- 0:12I would just take it to the podcast. And so if
- 0:15you are new here, my name is Tracy. I am so excited
- 0:18that you have tuned in today and here on fostering
- 0:21faith today, we're going to be learning and leaning
- 0:23into a word that has just, like I said, been
- 0:26in through scripture. We talked about in class
- 0:28and it's just Kind of been in scripture that
- 0:30I've been reading and it's the word go. And so
- 0:33let me ask you something. When God calls you
- 0:35to go, do you actually go? Do you get up right
- 0:39away? No questions asked, no strings attached.
- 0:42Or do you sit back, hesitate, calculate all the
- 0:46risks and wait until you feel ready? Here's the
- 0:51thing. Scripture is full of people who were called
- 0:54to go and the way that they responded says something
- 0:57about the depth. of their faith. Some burned
- 1:01their plows, some dropped their nets, and some
- 1:03left their family, land, and livelihood. Others
- 1:07hesitated, looked back, or missed out. And today
- 1:12we're going to be wrestling with that very tension.
- 1:15When God says go, do you go? Do you burn the
- 1:19wagon like Elisha? Or do you stay tied to it,
- 1:23just in case? Do you drop your nets like Peter
- 1:27and Andrew? Or do you keep patching them while
- 1:31Jesus is already walking down the shore? This
- 1:35isn't just a cute little Bible like study or
- 1:39like whatever. This is about life and death,
- 1:43about your obedience, about your calling, and
- 1:45how God's kingdom advances through us. And so
- 1:50let's start with Elisha and the story in King's
- 1:53First Kings, 1919. 21 so say that again. So first
- 1:59Kings 19 verse 19 through 21 Elijah the prophet
- 2:03finds Elisha Plowing the 12 yoke of oxen and
- 2:07that's just not a couple of animals. That's a
- 2:10lot of equipment that means Elisha had wealth
- 2:13land Savability a 401k plan a house that he probably
- 2:21Has paid off he had he had everything And Elijah
- 2:25comes by, throws a cloak over him, and says,
- 2:31this is your signal. You're chosen. God is calling
- 2:34you. Follow me. So what does Elijah do? He slaughters
- 2:38his oxen. He burns his plow. He throws a feast
- 2:43for his people. And then he set out to follow
- 2:46Elijah. Do you hear that? He literally destroys
- 2:51the tools of his own life. I can't fall back
- 2:55on that. No, if this profit gig doesn't work
- 2:59out, I'll come back to the farm again. No, he
- 3:03burns the plow. He makes it impossible to turn
- 3:06back. And here's the application. So sometimes
- 3:10obedience looks like closing doors so tight that
- 3:14you can't return and go back, even if you want
- 3:19to. That's faith. That's trust. That's saying
- 3:23God. If you're calling me forward, then forward
- 3:27is the only way. And so let's fast forward to
- 3:31Matthew 4, 18 through 22. And so Jesus was walking
- 3:35by the Sea of Galilee. He sees Simon Peter and
- 3:39Andrew casting their nets. And he says, come
- 3:42follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
- 3:45The text says immediately they left their nets
- 3:48and followed him. Not after they sold the fish.
- 3:52not once they finished patching up their nets
- 3:54immediately. And then he calls James and John
- 3:58and they're in their boat with their father mending
- 4:01their nets. And the text says immediately they
- 4:05left the boat and their father and followed him.
- 4:09And so let's pause and say they left their father.
- 4:14That's family. That's identity. That's legacy.
- 4:20And still They stepped out. We love to romanticize
- 4:24these moments and think about the cost, no job
- 4:27security, no guarantees, no roadmap, just Jesus
- 4:32saying, follow me, and them saying, yes. And
- 4:39so as we're going all the way and around through
- 4:42scriptures, let's go back to Genesis 12, one
- 4:45through four. And if you rewind, you will see
- 4:48Abraham. And God tells him go from your country
- 4:52your people and your father's household to the
- 4:56land. I will show you Notice he doesn't even
- 5:01tell the name of the land just I'll show you
- 5:05That's like me telling you pack your bags. We're
- 5:08moving and I'll tell you where we're going once
- 5:11we get on the road Who is signing up for that?
- 5:15Yes. There are some people out there that are
- 5:17willing to do and go Whatever, but the majority
- 5:22of us are like, um No, like I'm gonna need like
- 5:26a month I need this and I need this and I need
- 5:28this I gotta do this and I gotta call them and
- 5:30I gotta do this and I gotta do this But Abraham
- 5:33went Scripture says so Abraham went as the Lord
- 5:37had told him. He didn't get a GPS coordinates
- 5:40He didn't get a moving checklist. He just he
- 5:43just went and faith isn't about having a full
- 5:47itinerary It's trusting the God who's writing
- 5:51the story. And so let's back up and ask, why
- 5:55does God use the word go so often? Because faith
- 6:01is not passive. Faith is not theory. Faith is
- 6:05not something that you keep in a notebook. Faith
- 6:08is motion. Faith is embodied. Faith takes you
- 6:14somewhere. God tells Noah, go build the ark.
- 6:18God tells Moses go to Pharaoh God tells Joshua
- 6:24go across the Jordan God tells Jonah go to Nineveh
- 6:31and Jonah goes the opposite way and we know how
- 6:35that ended God tells his disciples go and make
- 6:39disciples of the nations Every major move God
- 6:44starts with go So why don't we go? Well, let's
- 6:50be real. If you're the unknown, what if I fail?
- 6:55What if I look stupid? What if I lose everything?
- 7:01And there's comfort in the familiar, like my
- 7:04job. I like my city. I like my routine. I like
- 7:10being comfortable. And we all love comparison.
- 7:16I'm not just... I'm not... I'm not good enough.
- 7:19I'm not as gifted as she is. I'm not as wise
- 7:22as him. God must have been calling the wrong
- 7:26person. And control is my favorite. Lord, give
- 7:32me the details first. Show me the plan. Show
- 7:35me the blueprint. Give me plan A, B, C, D, and
- 7:40F. And if I don't like it, then let's rewrite
- 7:44it and let's do it this way. Or maybe we could
- 7:47do it this way. and then I'll obey. But delayed
- 7:53obedience is still disobedience. The longer you
- 7:58wait, the heavier the plow feels, the harder
- 8:01it is to drop those nets. And so let's not sanitize
- 8:05these stories. So for Elisha, burning his plow
- 8:09meant burning his wealth, his security, his inheritance.
- 8:12For the disciples, leaving their nets meant poverty,
- 8:16uncertainty. and even persecution. For Abraham,
- 8:21leaving his home meant stepping into a foreign
- 8:23land, strange cultures, and constant risk. In
- 8:28their world, family and land weren't just personal
- 8:31things. They were survival. To walk away from
- 8:34them was radical and almost scandalous. And so
- 8:41that's what makes obedience even more powerful.
- 8:46And so what does go look like today? So maybe
- 8:50God is calling you to leave that toxic relationship
- 8:52Maybe God is nudging you to start that ministry
- 8:56or the podcast Maybe it's time to walk into a
- 9:01new career path that better aligns with your
- 9:04gifts Maybe he's simply saying walk across the
- 9:09street to introduce yourself to the neighbor
- 9:10to invite them to church Go doesn't mean geography
- 9:15all the time. Sometimes go just means stepping
- 9:19out of your silence. Sometimes it means stepping
- 9:23into forgiveness. Sometimes it means lying down
- 9:27that pride that you've been carrying. And so
- 9:31parents, your kids are watching you. When God
- 9:34tells you to go, they're watching to see if you
- 9:37obey. Don't just teach them to read Bible stories.
- 9:41Live them. Let them see what burning the plow
- 9:45looks like in real life. And youth, don't wait
- 9:48till you get older. We know that and we've preached
- 9:51this all the time, you know, that you guys set
- 9:54the temperature for the room. God called Samuel
- 9:58when he was just a boy. God used David as a teenager
- 10:02to defeat the Goliath. And the disciples were
- 10:05merely young men, not seasoned elders. Our yes.
- 10:11Matters your yes matters when you're 12 your
- 10:1413 your 14 your 15 60s 70s 80s 90s So maybe your
- 10:20go is joining the Bible Club maybe it's Befriending
- 10:26a kid who sits alone Maybe it's posting truth
- 10:31instead of gossip It's a right now. I want you
- 10:34to stop what you're doing and ask What's my plow?
- 10:40What's my net What's my land of comfort? And
- 10:48just sit with it and ask God What am I supposed
- 10:53to give up? What are you asking me to what do
- 10:56I have in my hand? It's so tight that I don't
- 10:59want to give up What am I willing to drop to
- 11:04follow Jesus What is my eyes on instead of him?
- 11:10And so just say take a deep breath And say it
- 11:13out loud if you have to. Write it down. Identify
- 11:18it. Because until you name it, you're dragging
- 11:22it behind you. And God is calling you forward.
- 11:25Don't let yesterday's security block tomorrow's
- 11:30obedience. And so think about missionaries who
- 11:36pack up everything and move overseas. Think about
- 11:39the families who foster or adopt Just because
- 11:42God said go love those kids. Think about the
- 11:46believers who start that business to honor God
- 11:48even when it costs more. Obedience isn't about
- 11:52convenience. It's about faith. And so as we wrap
- 11:57up this week, picture yourself standing on the
- 12:00shore. That's in hand. And God is calling. What
- 12:05do you do? Do you drop it? Do you check your
- 12:09schedule first? Do you call your best friend?
- 12:14Do you call your mom? Do you call your dad? Or
- 12:16do you just go? Do you mend your nets? Do you
- 12:19drop them? Do you keep your oxen? Or do you burn
- 12:23the plow? Or do you play it safe? Do you call
- 12:28your banker? Do you call your investor? Do you
- 12:30call your best friends? Do you check with your
- 12:31teacher? Do you check if it's on TikTok? Do you
- 12:33make sure that's not on Instagram? Or do you
- 12:37go where God is calling you? And so we would
- 12:40love to pray for you this week. Dear Heavenly
- 12:41Father, thank you so much for these listeners.
- 12:43Thank you so much that you are pointing out what
- 12:45our plows are in our life. Thank you for the
- 12:47boldness. Thank you for allowing us to walk on
- 12:50our faith and so we can burn the plows and drop
- 12:52the nets. Thank you that you are a father and
- 12:54that we hear your voice. Give us encouragement
- 12:57to say yes without hesitation and that we can
- 13:00walk away without fear knowing that you are in
- 13:04control. Teach us how to go even when we don't
- 13:07know where it is. Thank you for all that you
- 13:10do. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. And so friends,
- 13:14don't wait. Don't hesitate. And when God calls
- 13:18go, He's already gone before you. And thanks
- 13:22for joining me today on Fostering Faith Podcast.
- 13:24If this message spoke to you, share it with a
- 13:26friend. Share it with somebody that needs encouragement.
- 13:28Until next week, keep fostering your faith and
- 13:31keep going when God calls you to go. We love
- 13:34you guys. Have a great week.
