Transcript
- 0:15Jon: Drama.
- 0:15Ryan: drama, thriller.
- 0:16Well, Rodney Dangerfield's in there, but not in the role you would expect
- 0:21Kearns: definitely not in the real
- 0:22Ryan: in a, he still didn't get any respect
- 0:25Kearns: Christian serial killers are really getting me down.
- 0:31Oh, Rodney Dangerfield.
- 0:32That speaks to the age of the film.
- 0:34When did Umm frailty come out?
- 0:36Ryan: too.
- 0:372002.
- 0:38Kearns: The year, man graduated from high school, filled with hopes and dreams.
- 0:43man is man.
- 0:45Yeah, 2002 seems right.
- 0:47It's got the grainy quality.
- 0:48The whole film seems dusty, but I think that's on purpose.
- 0:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 0:53Ryan: this,
- 0:53Kearns: set in 2002.
- 0:56Ryan: no, it jumps from, uh, current period, which was 2002 to 1979,
- 1:01Kearns: And
- 1:01Ryan: but
- 1:02Kearns: that
- 1:03Ryan: it,
- 1:04Kearns: look.
- 1:05Ryan: but it leads to a good question.
- 1:07If you were on a desert island, what top three Bill Paxton films would you
- 1:13take with you to enjoy for the rest of your life on that desert island?
- 1:18Kearns: of Big Love,
- 1:23his polyamorous, series on HBO from around the same era a little
- 1:28bit later, like two years later.
- 1:30I think Big Love was hitting HBO, right?
- 1:31Ryan: I believe so.
- 1:32Yes, because,
- 1:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:34Ryan: 'cause this, this movie put him back in the spotlight, I feel,
- 1:38even though he's, he's always in the spotlight, so you're just
- 1:41going with big love as your three
- 1:43Kearns: being an asshole.
- 1:43Um, I'll let John
- 1:46Ryan: like,
- 1:46Kearns: because I'm collecting myself.
- 1:49Yeah,
- 1:50Ryan: yeah, I'm, I'm already prepared just in case.
- 1:52Kearns: I.
- 1:53Jon: All right.
- 1:53I will say my three stuck forever, bill Paxton movies would be weird.
- 2:00Science,
- 2:01Ryan: Okay.
- 2:02Kearns: All right.
- 2:03Maybe I shouldn't have let you go first.
- 2:06Jon: club dread,
- 2:08Ryan: Uh, coconut pea.
- 2:12Jon: and I'll leave you guys some of the other ones.
- 2:15Tombstone.
- 2:18Ryan: All right.
- 2:19All right.
- 2:21What inspired me to grow that mustache that summer?
- 2:24Kearns: weird science and tombstone from me.
- 2:26I'm only gonna keep one.
- 2:28Tombstone is one of my favorites.
- 2:30Um, and there's so much goodness in that with Sam Elliot and Russell and
- 2:35countless other guys in that movie.
- 2:37I, I'm just gonna be basic bitch and go with aliens.
- 2:41Right?
- 2:43Gotta go with aliens.
- 2:45Let's see what other big franchise is he associated with?
- 2:52Anyone?
- 2:53Anyone.
- 2:54Jon: Mm,
- 2:55Ryan: Bueller
- 2:56Kearns: Isn't he in
- 2:57Ryan: Bueller,
- 2:58Jon: he is.
- 2:59Kearns: Yeah,
- 3:00Ryan: he's in the first one.
- 3:01Kearns: what I was gonna, yeah, I was gonna go with it, but I'm drawing a
- 3:04blank from like where in the movie.
- 3:06I remember him.
- 3:07I just keep
- 3:08Ryan: I think he's in the beginning.
- 3:10Kearns: Yeah, he's right at the,
- 3:11Jon: a, he's not in it long, but he's early.
- 3:14Early.
- 3:15Kearns: he gets killed.
- 3:16Uh, not killed off.
- 3:17Does he get bugged off in the bar or something like that?
- 3:20Jon: Yeah.
- 3:21Ryan: Arnold beats the crap out of them.
- 3:22Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 3:24It's just a fine way to go.
- 3:25But yeah, that'll be me.
- 3:26I'll be basic.
- 3:27I'll go tombstone aliens and, uh, and terminated.
- 3:32Ryan: All right.
- 3:33Oh, I'm gonna be, oh, basic and unique.
- 3:36I guess.
- 3:37First one's gonna be Twister.
- 3:39I need to see a flying cow once in a blue moon.
- 3:42Um, and the breakfast scene is just, uh, just so good.
- 3:46Kearns: me puke.
- 3:49Ryan: My, my bad.
- 3:51Um, well, this might even, oh, predator two.
- 3:55He is in Predator two.
- 3:57He's one.
- 3:57He is, uh, Jerry Lambert, one of the cops who work with, uh, Danny Glover
- 4:01Kearns: Oh,
- 4:01Ryan: and
- 4:03Jon: Yep.
- 4:04Ryan: And he's just, it's just the urban landscape is great, and his role's good.
- 4:09Plus you get Gary Busey in it too,
- 4:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:11That's a great movie.
- 4:12And
- 4:12Ryan: like
- 4:12Kearns: what
- 4:13Ryan: just a maniac.
- 4:14Kearns: Holy Trinity too.
- 4:15He's in all
- 4:16Ryan: Yes.
- 4:17He's, just a legend.
- 4:19And, I gotta go with near dark, need some vampires.
- 4:22Kearns: All right, fair
- 4:23Ryan: I didn't save it from the last list, so I had to save it for this one.
- 4:27I can watch that movie all the time.
- 4:28It's just so good.
- 4:29Kearns: You are
- 4:30Ryan: And he's such a jackass in that film.
- 4:32It's great.
- 4:34It's just so great.
- 4:36Kearns: Good call.
- 4:37Good call.
- 4:37Alright,
- 4:38Ryan: Nah,
- 4:38Jon: good one.
- 4:40Kearns: if you
- 4:40Ryan: everyone had good threes.
- 4:41Kearns: in the dark, we're doing Xenomania episode something or other on frailty
- 4:46Ryan: 24.
- 4:47Kearns: Yeah, it's 25.
- 4:49Ryan: 26.
- 4:5026.
- 4:52Kearns: Already done.
- 4:5226. Not to show you guys how we make the donuts.
- 4:56Yeah, we're getting there.
- 4:57Ryan: Yeah.
- 4:58Kearns: quarter mark.
- 4:59Getting closer
- 4:59Ryan: Well actually, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 5:01Erase that.
- 5:02This is actually gonna be 27 because we're seeing 28 years later
- 5:08Kearns: We
- 5:09Ryan: and that's, I think we are, we're gonna have to cap that trilogy.
- 5:14Kearns: You think this is gonna come out okay.
- 5:17After John will be the, the one who decides all that, I
- 5:20Ryan: No.
- 5:20Did I jump the gun?
- 5:23Jon: We will have to see.
- 5:24We'll have to see
- 5:25Kearns: We're really shuffling things now.
- 5:26Jon: 28 years later together in time.
- 5:30Kearns: Well watching it, uh, Thursday and then recording that Friday, it'll
- 5:35be, it'll be ready for that Wednesday.
- 5:37We can do that
- 5:39Jon: Yeah.
- 5:39Kearns: foci, right, Ryan?
- 5:42As I make promises, Ryan's the primary editor of the episodes,
- 5:46Ryan: Oh, it's always ready on Wednesdays.
- 5:48It's just the pictures.
- 5:49Try to get those good pictures for you guys.
- 5:52Kearns: yeah, buddy.
- 5:53Um,
- 5:54Ryan: the last one of Brendan Gleason had to represent Matt,
- 5:58I moody in a brilliant way.
- 6:00But, uh, we're talking about, we gotta talk about frailty and we gotta
- 6:03talk about the great Bill Paxton
- 6:05Kearns: Said.
- 6:05Ryan: Bill Paxton, and I think this is, is this his only movie he's directed?
- 6:11Jon: He
- 6:11Kearns: don't know.
- 6:12Jon: directing credits.
- 6:14Ryan: Okay.
- 6:15Jon: This is the only movie that of hit that he made that I've seen in one of his
- 6:19directing credits is Saturday Night Live.
- 6:21Somehow.
- 6:22Kearns: Huh.
- 6:22Well, they do that sometimes.
- 6:24Uh, but yeah, this is, um, an interesting movie is we, we started
- 6:28our open with us debating on kind of whether or not what it is.
- 6:32'cause it's not technically horror, but it is dark as shit
- 6:36and it still gives me goosebumps.
- 6:38so we begin before pre-flash back with, uh, Matthew McConaughey.
- 6:42You may have heard of him.
- 6:43He is a budding young actor.
- 6:45Ryan: All right.
- 6:45All right.
- 6:46All right.
- 6:46Kearns: walks into a police station and he's gonna, he's got a story to tell.
- 6:51And who does he tell it to?
- 6:53Ryan: Powers Booth
- 6:54Kearns: Howard, one of the
- 6:55Ryan: Agent Doyle.
- 6:57Jon: agent Doyle.
- 6:59Kearns: I always,
- 6:59Jon: his, it's kind of Powers, Booth's Peak.
- 7:04Craig t Nelson.
- 7:05Period.
- 7:07Kearns: yeah.
- 7:08Yeah.
- 7:09Fair.
- 7:10Ryan: It's the hair.
- 7:10Jon: know that's Power's booth in this, the first time you
- 7:13see him, you're like, coach,
- 7:15Kearns: No, that's great.
- 7:16That's great.
- 7:18yeah, he's, more forehead than man in this movie for sure.
- 7:21I.
- 7:21Jon: yeah,
- 7:22Kearns: His acting too is just like grimace, grimace, blank.
- 7:25Grimace, grimace.
- 7:27Ryan: even when he shows happiness, like you watch him in Deadwood or even
- 7:30like Sin City, it's still offputting.
- 7:33He's a creep.
- 7:34He, well, he was a creepy dude.
- 7:36He is dead.
- 7:37You know, he's sadly passed away, unlike Tim Curry who's still alive.
- 7:43Kearns: spoilers Tim Curry.
- 7:45Uh, yeah, his, uh, he's doing great.
- 7:47He's really kicking, so the film, it flash, uh, he, so he comes in and he
- 7:53is like, Hey, I saw some crazy crap.
- 7:55And I gotta tell you some crazy stuff because there, there's some people
- 7:58whose is dead and they give him a cup of coffee and they bring him into an
- 8:01office and we get the flashback scenario and it's very, uh, usual suspects in
- 8:07which was very popular at the time.
- 8:09And we flash back to the
- 8:10Ryan: Yep.
- 8:11Kearns: He portrays himself as one of two brothers whose names are
- 8:17Jon: Ben.
- 8:19Kearns: who names their kid.
- 8:20Fenton.
- 8:22Fenton, Knoll,
- 8:24Jon: I mean, it, it de, it definitely doesn't hold up today.
- 8:28Kearns: new Fenton.
- 8:30My Spanish teacher's name was Fenton Powers, by the way.
- 8:33I was an interesting name.
- 8:36Fenton adjacent to that.
- 8:38So Fenton and Adam.
- 8:40One's very biblical and one's very methy.
- 8:43Ryan: Yes.
- 8:44Kearns: McConaughey is Fenton the flashback.
- 8:47As we start and we go through, um, we've got something to mention a little
- 8:54bit about how they ruin this movie with modern streaming and whatnot.
- 8:58But, we go through the stories and it's just basically a dad raising his two sons.
- 9:01The guy's pretty righteous.
- 9:02He's very religious.
- 9:04He's a mechanic.
- 9:05the kids are good kids.
- 9:06It's great.
- 9:07It's like, seems nice.
- 9:08And then dad comes home and he is like, boys, boys, get outta bed quick.
- 9:12Daddy had a nervous breakdown.
- 9:13I mean, uh, daddy was, uh, approached by an angel and he
- 9:17told me, I, I got to kill demons.
- 9:19my favorite part of that whole scene, by the way, 'cause it, I, it was plausible.
- 9:23And then he busts out a lead pipe and Otis
- 9:27Ryan: Yep.
- 9:27Kearns: and a pair of
- 9:28Ryan: Hmm.
- 9:28Kearns: and he is like, these are my divine weapons for killing the demons.
- 9:31And you're immediately like, oh shit, this is not good.
- 9:34Jon: Yeah.
- 9:34Yeah.
- 9:36He, because initially it's, we're gonna be given the list and means
- 9:41to kill the demons in the future.
- 9:44Kearns: Right.
- 9:45Jon: right, this is just gonna be something that he brings up this
- 9:47one time and it's gonna go away.
- 9:51not gonna drag his children into serial killing.
- 9:55Kearns: Bubu.
- 9:56Spoiler alert.
- 9:57Ryan: Well,
- 9:57Kearns: he does.
- 9:58He gets him in onboard right
- 10:00Ryan: percent.
- 10:01Kearns: business.
- 10:02Um,
- 10:03Ryan: he gets Adam on board.
- 10:05Fenton, he's, he's questionable about it.
- 10:07He's just like, oh, this isn't right,
- 10:09Kearns: oh yeah.
- 10:10Ryan: you know?
- 10:10Kearns: dad's a lunatic.
- 10:11And we'll get through that too.
- 10:12Uh,
- 10:13Ryan: Oh, yeah.
- 10:13Kearns: that though, I wanna talk about the lead pipe, the methodology.
- 10:17So the, the gloves are to keep him from seeing like, ah, 'cause when
- 10:21he touches 'em, he's got the Bruce Willis from Unbreakable and he
- 10:24can see everything they've done,
- 10:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:27Kearns: um, isn't an interesting superpower.
- 10:29So he's gotta wear the, the mechanics gloves to keep from happening when he
- 10:33is handling them, these demons, which are people, or they look like people.
- 10:37It's not like we're dealing with, Constantine style stuff going on here.
- 10:41And then so they trick 'em, they bangs 'em over the head with the lead pipe.
- 10:45They drag 'em into a van and they drive 'em to a sex dungeon, uh,
- 10:49which actually was above ground.
- 10:50And then they bring it below ground.
- 10:52they dig it out later, and then they use Otis to decapitate them.
- 10:57is into the acts
- 11:01Jon: Yes.
- 11:02Kearns: it's, I I thought, I think that's one of the more
- 11:04endearing parts of the movie.
- 11:06Um, and I, I racked my brain the first time I watched it for religious
- 11:09implications because was like, okay, maybe the V is a five and is
- 11:13this like some sort of Latin thing?
- 11:16it, I spent a little bit of time on it early internet, so that wasn't much
- 11:19help and I couldn't find anything.
- 11:21And I'm glad I couldn't because apparently it's got no meaning other
- 11:25than a cool little story by Paxton, which I'm sure John will tell us.
- 11:29Um, what's the story, John?
- 11:33Jon: No, I think, you got it.
- 11:34There's really seemingly no significance to it being named Otis.
- 11:40Kearns: Not in the story, but I, I thought you'd have this.
- 11:43Paxton, when he was scoping out, shots, he found a homeless man Otis and he
- 11:50was chanced upon him and he named the acts after him to give a grounding
- 11:54and meaning so that he could remember, or that it would make it easier
- 11:57for him to put personality on it, I
- 12:00Ryan: That's cool.
- 12:01Kearns: failed to do.
- 12:02It doesn't feel as though that is living, that's not a mule near
- 12:05style thing that they've got there.
- 12:07To me, throughout the movie, it's just an ax.
- 12:09It's an ax with a cool name that makes it kind of fun.
- 12:12But I don't feel like it has a, it's not a character in the film to me.
- 12:16and I think that's what he
- 12:17Ryan: I think
- 12:17Kearns: to do with it.
- 12:18Ryan: he did with the illumination of light pouring down through
- 12:21the ceiling to illuminate it and to let it glisten for a second.
- 12:25He did try, but it just, it doesn't click like that.
- 12:29I did like the name though.
- 12:30Good old Otis
- 12:32Kearns: I mean, who doesn't trust Otis?
- 12:33Otis has to be a good guy.
- 12:35Um, but I did want to
- 12:36Ryan: always.
- 12:37Kearns: we got too far in because that's an, that's an important factor early on.
- 12:41Jon: I think another important factor is I. The age difference
- 12:46in the boys how they grew up.
- 12:50They're three years apart, it's a significant gap in that mom
- 12:56dies in childbirth with Adam.
- 12:59Ryan: Yeah,
- 13:00Jon: So Fenton is sort of, he's got a couple years for mom to imprint
- 13:05on him and, you know, probably pick up a little bit of mom.
- 13:10you know, dad's a little crazy, so, you know, it's, you know, he's
- 13:17Ryan: keep an eye on them.
- 13:18Jon: okay.
- 13:18He's not bad, but he's, you know, he is a little off sometimes.
- 13:22So he's, he sort of, PI has the to have picked up the skepticism about his father,
- 13:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:30Jon: whereas Adam is just, that's all he's known.
- 13:33Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:33And he loves his dad implicitly throughout the movie.
- 13:35Never questions him.
- 13:38it seems a little rattled at times, but nothing like Fenton
- 13:41when they're killing people.
- 13:44Ryan: No
- 13:44Kearns: and dear listeners, if you have not seen the movie, now is the
- 13:47time to stop and go see the movie.
- 13:49Ryan: spoilers.
- 13:51Kearns: how much blood gets on their hands while their dad's doing this stuff.
- 13:54They're not just killing these guys
- 13:55Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 13:56Kearns: They're also chopping them up then burying them together in the rose garden.
- 14:02Jon: Yep.
- 14:03Ryan: All, all for God's hand.
- 14:05Kearns: Yep.
- 14:06Ryan: for God's hand.
- 14:07Kearns: It's it's wild, crazy, kooky stuff.
- 14:11Jon: I think it's sort of interesting that Doyle is investigating a
- 14:18serial killer that isn't necessarily these early killings for sure,
- 14:25and maybe not later either.
- 14:28He seems to almost be investigating a different killer, which is later
- 14:34revealed to be the other boy, but
- 14:38Kearns: Well, yeah.
- 14:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 14:39Kearns: just do it now.
- 14:40Let's just do it now.
- 14:41So before
- 14:43Ryan: Yeah.
- 14:43Kearns: far, there's a switch at the end of the movie where there's a big reveal.
- 14:46We find out that Kaiser Soce is Kevin Spacey, no, we find out that
- 14:51the McConaughey's character is not Fenton as he's been portraying himself
- 14:57and actually does a good job with the movie, with this little trick.
- 15:00It does put you on your back foot right at the end and it makes it hit harder.
- 15:03But it's actually Adam.
- 15:05the reason why we brought up that streaming services, screw this up
- 15:08for everybody, is if you pause it on Amazon, it says Matthew McConaughey
- 15:12and then the character's name underneath him and you're like, oh,
- 15:16Jon: mm-hmm.
- 15:17Ryan: See, I am glad I didn't pause the movie.
- 15:21Kearns: it,
- 15:21Ryan: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 15:22Jon: it's the same with IMDB.
- 15:24It just straight out says Matthew McConaughey as Adam.
- 15:27And you know, I'm not sure that there's another way to do that.
- 15:33Kearns: brother.
- 15:33News news.
- 15:35Older blank brother, younger blank brother.
- 15:37I forget the last name right now.
- 15:38I just watched the movie today, Meeks.
- 15:40That's right.
- 15:41It's another great name.
- 15:42And the meek shown here at the earth, by the way, it's,
- 15:46there's good stuff here, there.
- 15:47It's not in your face and it's not significant, but it's there.
- 15:51They have that stuff.
- 15:52Um,
- 15:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:54Kearns: yeah.
- 15:55Yeah, we get that twist.
- 15:57Adam is actually McConaughey.
- 15:58All right.
- 15:58Now we can go back to.
- 16:00To what John was saying so that everybody's on the same page.
- 16:03The Kaiser Soce stuff.
- 16:04No, wait, no, we were before that.
- 16:06Jon: Yeah.
- 16:07I mean he,
- 16:10Fenton, Adam Matthew McConaughey is giving.
- 16:16Doyle details of the killings, the initial killings, the 1979 killings with his dad,
- 16:24while also sort of indicating that his brother is the serial killer that he's
- 16:30looking for while Matthew McConaughey seems to be a continuing dad's work
- 16:36in a different string killings.
- 16:39Am I picking that up right?
- 16:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:41One is
- 16:41Ryan: Yes, yes.
- 16:43Kearns: of the trauma as some serial killers are created and one is actually
- 16:47believing that he is a divine harbinger of doom for demons and evil beliefs.
- 16:54Jon: And
- 16:54Ryan: Yes.
- 16:55Jon: the, the other thing to sort of get on the table now is I think part
- 16:59of why Matthew McConaughey has gone to the FBI with this story is Fenton is
- 17:05dead at the beginning of the movie, and
- 17:09Ryan: Okay.
- 17:10Committed, uh, suicide.
- 17:14Jon: and Matthew McConaughey's Adam has stolen the body and taken it
- 17:20and buried it in the rose garden
- 17:23Ryan: Yes.
- 17:23Kearns: stolen part.
- 17:25Jon: stolen
- 17:26Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:26Which, so it's everything about the beginning of this
- 17:29discussion is suspicious they,
- 17:32Jon: y.
- 17:32Kearns: even the guy leaving the other FBI agent was like, you're good for me to go.
- 17:36He's like, yeah, don't worry.
- 17:37Just leave me alone with this guy.
- 17:40Everything will work out.
- 17:41And then he takes him for a nice ride in the car.
- 17:43but before we get to that, we continue through the 1979 era
- 17:49of the killings and stuff.
- 17:51And you watch, a really cool thing happen with Fenton's character.
- 17:55So he rebels against his father, is not into this, doesn't believe in it.
- 18:00The Adam claims to see the demons in the visions himself, doesn't
- 18:04understand Fenton's point at all.
- 18:06He's like, no, dad's right?
- 18:08What are you talking about?
- 18:09Fenton's the odd man out here.
- 18:11and he eventually decides, screw this, they got a kid.
- 18:14well, no, first he, he rebels.
- 18:16And the dad finally says, you know what?
- 18:18I gotta plan for you.
- 18:19And he starts having him dig, and he makes him
- 18:23Ryan: Yes.
- 18:23Kearns: the death dungeon that they end up putting their shed on
- 18:26top of, which is pretty baller.
- 18:28And the kid, to his credit, Fenton's a tough guy.
- 18:31he like wounds his hands outta spite while he does the digging.
- 18:35And he completes the dig that.
- 18:38kind of a baller
- 18:39Ryan: I felt this, I,
- 18:41Kearns: it on my terms.
- 18:43Ryan: I felt this pain with those blisters.
- 18:45I was like, just take the gloves.
- 18:47But I'm like, I understand what you're doing, but shit, man.
- 18:51Like, and the, the special effects in that, in this movie are pretty well done.
- 18:56'cause looking at those blisters, I was like, those, those look real.
- 19:00I feel you
- 19:01Jon: they're uncomfortable looking.
- 19:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:04And they're
- 19:04Ryan: very,
- 19:05Kearns: spots
- 19:05Ryan: much so.
- 19:06Kearns: pad.
- 19:06This pad and right over here, right where the
- 19:08Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 19:09Kearns: B, B,
- 19:09Jon: Yep.
- 19:10Kearns: B. Anybody split
- 19:11Ryan: Just,
- 19:11Kearns: long periods of times with them all and didn't do it right?
- 19:14Like I have, you'll know what that's like.
- 19:17Blisters are fun.
- 19:18So he goes through that.
- 19:19they have sort of a, little bit of, together a little bit after that,
- 19:25but Fenton continues to be surly
- 19:28Jon: Yeah.
- 19:28Ryan: yes.
- 19:30Kearns: then.
- 19:31Jon: sort of becomes compliant but not believing.
- 19:35Kearns: Right.
- 19:35And he's still pissed and he's given a lot of attitude.
- 19:39then the kid, well, they go out and they pick up a guy they're
- 19:43downstairs ready to do it, and Fenton finally says like, I can't do this.
- 19:46And he, he flees up the stairs and out of the death dungeon.
- 19:50and at that point he runs to the sheriff just getting ready to
- 19:54go bass fishing up by the lake.
- 19:56It's just up late at night getting ready to go bass fishing.
- 19:59And he is kind of a prick.
- 20:01one of those, oops, you shouldn't have been such a
- 20:02prick pricks, like a decent guy.
- 20:05You can tell.
- 20:06Um, the Fenton town.
- 20:09Jon: Not a bad guy, but also not a guy that is used to listening to
- 20:14children and you know, sort of dealing with what he sees as a child's fable.
- 20:21Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 20:22Which, I mean, everybody, the FBI agent does too, while McConaughey is like 23.
- 20:28The actor's character is like 23 in this movie, is doing the same thing,
- 20:33getting the same kind of treatment.
- 20:34Fenton brings the sheriff, the sheriff's, like I'm telling your dad.
- 20:37So they go Paxton's, putting on his best treatment.
- 20:39The look he gives him though, when he looks at Fenton and he is
- 20:42like, are you ready to do this?
- 20:43Or whatever he says when they're about to go down to the shed.
- 20:47sheriff
- 20:47Ryan: It is so
- 20:48Kearns: let's just
- 20:48Ryan: eerie.
- 20:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:51Ryan: So eerie.
- 20:52His eyes just when they shift, you know, I've like, I've never seen Henry Portrait
- 20:57of a serial killer, but I've watched the trailer a couple times and I know it's a
- 21:03worse film than frailty, but like it gave me that vibe that Michael Rucker vibes
- 21:07But yeah, I feel like his shift of eyes and Bill Paxton, I
- 21:12mean, you see him in aliens.
- 21:14He's very energetic.
- 21:15You see him in Tombstone.
- 21:18He's very cool.
- 21:19Uh, he was a very, um, versatile actor.
- 21:23And it shows really well in this, especially like that shift of being
- 21:27a country bumpkin friendly to I'm gonna wield an ax and kill you.
- 21:31And that's what it leads to when Fenton leads the sheriff down to the
- 21:37cellar and Bill acts as him to death, and he's like, you made me do this.
- 21:45I killed a, this is the line I killed.
- 21:48A human, not a demon.
- 21:50Look at what you made me do.
- 21:53Kearns: Yeah, it was cool.
- 21:54Ryan: so sick.
- 21:55Jon: This task had come with the warning that if they don't obey, someone will die.
- 22:01Kearns: Then that's what he had said.
- 22:02And he didn't want to tell Fenton that fact earlier in the movie.
- 22:06That's the unspoken thing that, he was trying to keep from Fenton.
- 22:11He, I always thought that it was implied that he was told that Fenton would
- 22:14lead him to killing like a prophecy.
- 22:17But I don't think it was that dark.
- 22:18I don't think that the angel that spoke to him was, trying to
- 22:21Ryan: Oh,
- 22:22Kearns: that, now
- 22:23Ryan: the angel wanted him, the angel wanted him to kill
- 22:27Fenton, and he disagrees with it.
- 22:29Kearns: Yeah, that's later.
- 22:30Ryan: Was that later?
- 22:31Oh,
- 22:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:32Ryan: said spoiler, so
- 22:33Kearns: so
- 22:33Ryan: it's not right.
- 22:34Kearns: is that later or No, that might actually be before.
- 22:37Jon: later.
- 22:37It's a, it's a bit later, but not much
- 22:40Ryan: It,
- 22:41Kearns: Yeah,
- 22:41Ryan: it's after the sheriff.
- 22:43Jon: yeah, Fenton gets locked in the
- 22:46Kearns: Before that, I do wanna point out the sheriff is killed in a different
- 22:49way than the demons are, which is important I think, and a nice touch.
- 22:53just kills him like a dude.
- 22:54He doesn't behead him first.
- 22:56He acts as him on the top of the head to get him down the stairs again.
- 22:59And then he just finishes him off the demons.
- 23:01It's always beheading first he says.
- 23:04And then there's more to it that we never really flush out, I like
- 23:09Ryan: Well, he chops them up.
- 23:10Jon: yeah.
- 23:10We just know that you just assume by what you see, that he chops them up.
- 23:15Kearns: I did wanna point out really quickly that important aspect of it.
- 23:18And then now we have the lockup scene.
- 23:21This is the most disturbing scene in the movie for me as a
- 23:23Ryan: Yes.
- 23:24Kearns: a kid, it was the most disturbing scene in the movie for me.
- 23:27It's just messed up.
- 23:29Jon: Yeah.
- 23:29Fenton is locked in the dungeon below the shed without food,
- 23:34with a glass of water a day.
- 23:39Kearns: They send him on a vision
- 23:40Ryan: Yep.
- 23:40Kearns: basically sweat lodging it
- 23:42Ryan: Yeah.
- 23:42Jon: yep,
- 23:42Kearns: and that it will make you hallucinate.
- 23:45and I think it's weeks before he, if he needs to eats food again.
- 23:48But one of the nice
- 23:49Ryan: Yep.
- 23:50Kearns: to that, by the way, is when they nail the doors shut,
- 23:52when, the dad nails the door shut.
- 23:55That's my favorite touch there.
- 23:57then when he has to open it, you have to, you hear him pulling the nails out time
- 24:01with the back, with the claw, the hammer.
- 24:03I just love that, that makes it grittier.
- 24:05And Adam brings Fenton water and talks to him a little bit while he is down there
- 24:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:10Kearns: and f
- 24:11Jon: And
- 24:11Kearns: some.
- 24:11Jon: a really, at that point, you understand that Dad now views Fenton
- 24:16as a demon, but he can't bring himself.
- 24:20To destroy the demon because he is not killing demons, he's destroying demons
- 24:26Kearns: Right.
- 24:26Good
- 24:27Ryan: Yeah.
- 24:27Kearns: Good point.
- 24:28With the language
- 24:29Jon: it's, I think that's an important distinction in where his brain is now at.
- 24:34Kearns: and the fact that he didn't, and it was prophesized later, we know Fenton
- 24:38goes on to become a serial killer collects trophies and does all these things.
- 24:42So Paxton
- 24:44Ryan: Yeah,
- 24:44Kearns: killing his own son in that way is kind of led to the deaths of those people.
- 24:49and may have been why his downfall was allowed as well, but I can't
- 24:55be sure if that's, if that can be, you know, actually stated.
- 24:59And then Fenton, tricky little booger that he is, he, he passes out that might
- 25:04not have been fake, but he passes out and he tells his dad when he wakes up.
- 25:07I, so, God, I so God, daddy.
- 25:09Ryan: Yeah.
- 25:10Kearns: Unbelievable.
- 25:11Jon: who, who knows at that point what he actually thinks he's seeing and
- 25:16what he's not seeing and what he, yeah.
- 25:18He's
- 25:18Ryan: I think he was playing them like a fiddle.
- 25:20Kearns: I know what he's tired of seeing as his own poop in a bucket.
- 25:23So he is like, I'm doing something to get outta this damn hole.
- 25:25Ryan: Exactly.
- 25:26Kearns: he could've hallucinated in that.
- 25:28'cause that is exactly how you do that trick.
- 25:30he gets out, he gets a hungry man dinner, which I was jealous of
- 25:33when I was watching that scene.
- 25:35It, the, in the tin tray, the old school, like real food, no preservatives.
- 25:39Ryan: Yep.
- 25:39Kearns: that would've been, that would've slapped.
- 25:41got his taters, his carrots, his meatloaf.
- 25:45and he's wolfing it down.
- 25:46He would've puked like six seconds later, if he hadn't eaten for weeks.
- 25:49And he ate that that fast, the way.
- 25:52But, he gets out and then the whole family's ready to get in the van,
- 25:56which is a sick van, by the way, for abducting and murdering people.
- 25:59Get in the van and off
- 26:01Ryan: Yeah.
- 26:01Kearns: take out another guy who's heading to Walmart.
- 26:04Not really.
- 26:04I forget the name of the store.
- 26:06and that's where they get this creepy old bastard
- 26:09Ryan: Yep.
- 26:09They get the old guy who, um, he's not doing nice things to children.
- 26:14We'll just leave it at that and allegedly,
- 26:18Kearns: blur.
- 26:20And I mean, well the thing that makes him stop is like, Hey little
- 26:23boy, what are you doing over here?
- 26:25He doesn't say it that creepy, but later if I,
- 26:27Jon: but at the same time, he's also crouched looking underneath his car, so
- 26:32Kearns: yeah, it's like,
- 26:34Jon: he's set up to be kind of creepy.
- 26:37Kearns: yeah.
- 26:38Ryan: yeah,
- 26:39Kearns: He's like, my cat's
- 26:40Ryan: well, gets a lead pipe.
- 26:41Kearns: gets thumped.
- 26:42Yep.
- 26:43uh, the Otis comes soon thereafter, I think
- 26:47Ryan: I just love how Bill, bill Paxton puts his hand on his bald head.
- 26:52He's just like,
- 26:54Kearns: uh, uh,
- 26:55Ryan: it's like
- 26:55Kearns: probably the cheesiest part.
- 26:57They probably shouldn't have gone full Paxton with those scenes.
- 27:00He was like, oh, like he's holding onto an electric cable.
- 27:03Jon: Paxton
- 27:04Kearns: No, definitely not.
- 27:05Uh, he said, game
- 27:06Ryan: game over.
- 27:08Game over.
- 27:09Kearns: coming.
- 27:10Uh, then the next one, so let's just jump ahead.
- 27:12'cause the movie's pretty static at that point.
- 27:14We get to the next guy that they're recording and Adam, I mean, um, Fenton
- 27:18is supposed to, yeah, he's a brag too.
- 27:22Fenton is supposed
- 27:23Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:24Kearns: be, be a much bigger part of this.
- 27:27This is like him training now.
- 27:29Ryan: he's like.
- 27:29Jon: Fenton's proving ground coming of a coming out party.
- 27:33You know, whatever you want to call it.
- 27:35is supposed to be fenton's kill to prove that the time
- 27:40in the cellar has changed him.
- 27:43Ryan: Yep.
- 27:44Kearns: and they get him, Fenton screws up a little bit,
- 27:46causes a nut, a bolt to drop.
- 27:48And then.
- 27:49Brad looks up just in time to see coming down with the lead pipe, and he manages
- 27:55to hit him with the tire iron first.
- 27:57But then Fenton comes in the clutch.
- 27:59I think he hits him with a wrench or something, bings him in the head,
- 28:01and then Paxton is able to finish the job and they get him in the van.
- 28:04Jon: that moment, it's not a long moment, but it's in that moment
- 28:08you think that Fenton has come around to Dad and God's plan.
- 28:12Kearns: And they do a
- 28:13Ryan: Yes.
- 28:13Kearns: guy, this demon too, because this dude was a, he was
- 28:16a scumbag from the fight to jump.
- 28:18He'd be like, oh, he should
- 28:19Ryan: Oh, yes.
- 28:21Kearns: He like calls his wife a bitch right away.
- 28:22He is like, shut up bitch.
- 28:27Ryan: Kid crying in the background.
- 28:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:29He just goes to zero to a thousand so fast.
- 28:33you interrupted my wife, Pete, what do you want out here?
- 28:37And then he brings him.
- 28:38Yeah, they bring him home.
- 28:40And Fenton's standing there with the axe looking badass and.
- 28:44Paxton touches his head, gets the 4 1 1.
- 28:46He is like, oh yeah, this dude needs to die.
- 28:48And he stands back and says it kind of like that too.
- 28:50Like this guy was
- 28:51Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:52Kearns: rest kind of deal.
- 28:54and then Fenton goes and takes a swing and
- 28:56Ryan: Oh, that's a large swing.
- 28:58It no,
- 29:00Kearns: doesn't hit and
- 29:01Ryan: it it's good old dad Right in actually right here, right in the heart.
- 29:07Kearns: Tough place to
- 29:08Ryan: I mean, you,
- 29:09Kearns: ax wound.
- 29:11Ryan: you know, bill, pat, you, that's a another thing.
- 29:13You see Bill Pax and you know he's gonna die or piss his pants.
- 29:17Either way,
- 29:18Kearns: didn't remember
- 29:18Ryan: you know.
- 29:19Kearns: the rewatch.
- 29:20I thought that he died like accidentally.
- 29:22And the boys, just carried on.
- 29:23Like I didn't remember the end of the movie at all really, except for the end.
- 29:27Jon: Yeah.
- 29:28I remembered him dying later in life at the hands of both boys for some reason.
- 29:36Kearns: I,
- 29:36Ryan: Ooh, that would've been cool.
- 29:38Kearns: things.
- 29:39Jon: Yeah.
- 29:40Kearns: I've seen frailty patched 'cause I had the hot box back then,
- 29:45so I saw it like eight times just running around on pay-per-view
- 29:48on my house over and over again.
- 29:52shut up.
- 29:52Feds can't get me now.
- 29:53I don't have it on me, but
- 29:56Ryan: The hot box doesn't exist.
- 29:59Kearns: He explains to, um, agent Doy that he's, he was in separate
- 30:05orphanages with his brother.
- 30:07Um,
- 30:08Jon: one, one more.
- 30:09Little bit.
- 30:10In dad's death, you get
- 30:13Kearns: oh yeah.
- 30:13Jon: Adam taking the ax.
- 30:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:16I
- 30:17Ryan: was cool.
- 30:17Scene.
- 30:18Kearns: Yeah, he
- 30:18Ryan: Just him.
- 30:19Kearns: the scumbag doesn't live.
- 30:21Jon: No,
- 30:22Ryan: No,
- 30:23Jon: no.
- 30:24Ryan: he whispers to Adam
- 30:25Kearns: Kill this son, bitch.
- 30:27Ryan: that basically, I think that's how that went.
- 30:29And then he's like running like a little Chucky doll.
- 30:32Kearns: He, he
- 30:33Ryan: That's all I was thinking about.
- 30:34Kearns: pound.
- 30:35Those things are heavy for a kid his size.
- 30:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:39Ryan: That
- 30:39Kearns: It's got the
- 30:40Ryan: definitely a prop.
- 30:41Kearns: for the extra grip on the drop.
- 30:42That sucker's main Otis is no joke.
- 30:46Mean looking ax,
- 30:47Ryan: old Otis.
- 30:48Kearns: double-edged too.
- 30:49he's in it now.
- 30:50Adam has his first kill of a demon, and, Fenton and Adam are split.
- 30:57They just say, oh yeah, they buried the dad.
- 30:59They never tell anybody what happened.
- 31:01They just say, daddy didn't come home.
- 31:02Nobody has any reason to search the yard look around.
- 31:06So nobody checks the rose garden or anything like that.
- 31:11what the weird part is the property presumably stays Fenton and Adams
- 31:16actually, is odd for minors.
- 31:20You would think that somebody would take control of the
- 31:22Ryan: Yeah,
- 31:22Kearns: it off these days.
- 31:24just hold it.
- 31:25Ryan: I don't think,
- 31:26Jon: Yeah,
- 31:27Ryan: I don't think the rose guard was a part of their property.
- 31:29I think it was just behind their property.
- 31:32'cause they said that was their way to cut through.
- 31:34So I think that was like
- 31:36Jon: I believe the
- 31:37Ryan: I,
- 31:38Jon: was the Rose Garden caretaker's house
- 31:41Kearns: Um, it.
- 31:43Jon: And then they ca dad came into possession of the house.
- 31:48Kearns: Got it.
- 31:49Alright.
- 31:50Ryan: Well.
- 31:52Jon: but there's still no reason to check the rose garden for
- 31:55whatever reason, because a missing sheriff isn't enough to do it.
- 31:58A guy, they abducted directly
- 32:00Kearns: Right.
- 32:01Jon: home.
- 32:02His home isn't enough to do it.
- 32:05Kearns: has like 60 people and uh, eight of them have just recently
- 32:09gone missing, but it, it's fine.
- 32:11Jon: Yeah.
- 32:12Ryan: That's all right.
- 32:12We'll replace them.
- 32:13Kearns: we have to come back to the rose garden at the end because they
- 32:15do something silly for visual effect.
- 32:17But it's like, dude,
- 32:19Ryan: Are you,
- 32:20Kearns: mounds
- 32:20Ryan: because, yeah, that's because earlier in the film, you're digging
- 32:26these deep 10 foot holes and then what did you, did you get lazy?
- 32:30Adam Fenton,
- 32:33Kearns: had 'em.
- 32:33Ryan: whoever you are.
- 32:35Were you lazy?
- 32:36Jon: a twist that comes with that character also
- 32:39Kearns: though.
- 32:39Jon: that explains why he can be sloppier
- 32:44Kearns: That's true too.
- 32:45All right, let's get to that.
- 32:46'cause
- 32:46Ryan: Yeah.
- 32:46Kearns: just tied it all together in my head.
- 32:48So let's do it for the listener.
- 32:49So we get McConaughey's like, all right.
- 32:51Alright, shithead, let's leave, let's go out to the property.
- 32:54I'm gonna show you that all this is true and they get outside and
- 32:58McConaughey is looking real weird and creepy at this point, but so.
- 33:03what's the agent's name again?
- 33:04Powers, boots.
- 33:04Character.
- 33:05Jon: Doyle.
- 33:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:07Doyle.
- 33:07Throws of the handcuffs.
- 33:08He goes, put those on or we're gonna put 'em on for you, kind of thing.
- 33:11And I was like, oh, okay.
- 33:12Here we go.
- 33:13Big swinging dick time they get in the car and they drive.
- 33:16They're doing a bit more chatting.
- 33:17We get a little bit more flashback and then McConaughey's like,
- 33:20Ryan: Yeah.
- 33:20Kearns: of talking and they just finish driving through the rain.
- 33:23That's why a lot of people remember this movie and the movie identity in a
- 33:27similar way because of all the rain, all the rain at the end and the darkness.
- 33:32Isn't that interesting?
- 33:33Ryan: John
- 33:34Kearns: rains throughout the whole movie.
- 33:35Yeah.
- 33:36Um, there are
- 33:37Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 33:38The
- 33:38Kearns: these movies for that reason.
- 33:40Isn't that cool?
- 33:41Jon: they, they came out about the same time,
- 33:44Kearns: Oh, I
- 33:44Ryan: yes.
- 33:45Kearns: loved identity when it came out.
- 33:46And another one of those bait and switch movies right of that time.
- 33:52That's cool.
- 33:53I'm glad we managed to pull that out 'cause I didn't
- 33:55connect that before the podcast.
- 33:56Jon: he gets Doyle out to the Rose Garden and,
- 34:00Ryan: Yep.
- 34:00Jon: you know, does, sees Doyle's past and Doyle's a bad guy and he's on
- 34:07Ryan: He killed his mom.
- 34:08Jon: he's a demon.
- 34:11Ryan: He killed his mom,
- 34:12Kearns: he killed
- 34:13Ryan: took a photo with her.
- 34:15Kearns: killed the shit out of his mom.
- 34:17Ryan: He stabbed the shit out of her.
- 34:19And two days after taking a nice, beautiful photo with him.
- 34:22Kearns: her once, and then on the
- 34:23Ryan: E.
- 34:24Kearns: as she's falling to her knees and like all of this area
- 34:27is exposed, when they do this
- 34:28Ryan: Yep.
- 34:28Kearns: it, it screws me up.
- 34:30took that big ass knife and he slid it straight down right here on her, like
- 34:36right behind all the nice armoring bones and into her jiggly bits.
- 34:41I was like,
- 34:41Jon: Yep.
- 34:42Kearns: no.
- 34:44Mrs. Power's booth?
- 34:45No, she was just folding the laundry.
- 34:49Ryan: Mrs. Doyle, it was probably his laundry.
- 34:51You didn't use conditioner again
- 34:54Kearns: It was outside too.
- 34:55They made it even more wholesome.
- 34:56His country mama.
- 34:58so he kills her presumably for some nefarious reason.
- 35:01It would've been nice to figure out why.
- 35:03Um, but it's still a
- 35:06Ryan: going with Money
- 35:07Kearns: Yeah, she probably wanted the house or something.
- 35:10Still a jerk move.
- 35:11So he kills her with his stupid haircut too, that they gave him for that scene.
- 35:15Ryan: Coach
- 35:16Kearns: Isn't that great?
- 35:16Can we pull up a picture for this part of the podcast of
- 35:18his dumb ass hair when in the
- 35:20Ryan: with Craig t Nelson,
- 35:22Kearns: it.
- 35:22I'll find it and email it.
- 35:24Just so you don't have to do the extra work.
- 35:25We need that in this scene.
- 35:27Um,
- 35:28Ryan: we need to compare with Craig t Nelson, definitely, because
- 35:31that pullback is exactly the same.
- 35:34It's just
- 35:36Kearns: that's a lot.
- 35:37Ryan: like
- 35:37Kearns: I mean, it is,
- 35:38Ryan: three stooges,
- 35:39Kearns: you're just trying to
- 35:40Ryan: Larry.
- 35:40Fine.
- 35:41Kearns: I was trying to, you're just like, uh, I don't wanna be fully bald yet,
- 35:47Ryan: Just go with it.
- 35:49Jon: yeah, so it's in this moment, is dead.
- 35:52You realize, wait, that's not Fenton, that's Adam,
- 35:56Kearns: so we've established that McConaughey was lying.
- 36:00We didn't kill Doyle yet.
- 36:01We killed Doyle's mom.
- 36:02We didn't know about Doyle's death, right?
- 36:05Jon: Yeah.
- 36:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:09yeah.
- 36:09I just wanna make sure we don't skip over important stuff.
- 36:11'cause it comes fast and furious from here and then
- 36:15Ryan: Well, he, he, he makes a mistake because he says that like,
- 36:20Fenton wants to be buried in the rose garden or, and that's when
- 36:25Doyle's like, but you're Fenton.
- 36:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:28Kearns: Then we figure it
- 36:29Ryan: he's like, well, I'm actually Adam.
- 36:31And it's like, oh boy.
- 36:33Jon: So here's my question though.
- 36:34Is that a mistake or is that him playing with Doyle at that point
- 36:42knowing that he's now in control of this situation and he can
- 36:45Ryan: Oh that,
- 36:46Jon: whatever he
- 36:47Kearns: Oh
- 36:47Jon: Is he, is he screwing with Doyle in that moment and just, oh, here,
- 36:53Kearns: we do this, can we just, can we just go through with the presumed end
- 36:58and then come back to the John theory?
- 36:59'cause I don't want to confuse people too much that maybe you
- 37:01have a rough memory of this movie like we did, before the rewatch.
- 37:05So, alright, so Adam goes into the flashback, we find out it
- 37:09is Adam, the younger brother who always believed in the father kills
- 37:13Ryan: yeah.
- 37:14Kearns: in his first kill when the father was killed and all that.
- 37:17He has been seeing visions the whole time and actuality he believes it.
- 37:21He sees them.
- 37:23In this version of the, your perception, um, goes to discuss
- 37:28Fenton is actually a serial killer.
- 37:30We assume that he became a serial killer because of the trauma of having all these
- 37:34things happen in front of him, which is a super smart move by God, by the way.
- 37:38Great job not picking up on that GOD.
- 37:42or the writer portraying GOD Sorry, big guy, please don't kill me.
- 37:45So they go into that and Fenton's like sitting at his computer typewriter,
- 37:51typing his manifesto to his brother.
- 37:53He's got his weird shit all up on the wall.
- 37:55It's perfect.
- 37:56And he gets clubbed by the same lead pipe and then it cuts from there.
- 38:00We don't know what hap like we don't get to see him kill
- 38:01his brother, which is nice.
- 38:02I would rather not kills Fenton, buries him in the rose garden, and then takes
- 38:07all the bodies out of Fenton's basement or some of them, not all of them, 'cause some
- 38:12of them were there when the FBI arrived and he, he stages it very, very precisely
- 38:17so that the FBI will see what he wants them to see when they go into the house.
- 38:21Then he goes to the station or he goes to the headquarters, tells,
- 38:25Doyle and goes through the motions with this, bringing him to the
- 38:29rose garden for the final showdown.
- 38:31The weirdest thing about this is he's being held at gunpoint and he comes
- 38:34in to hit him in the head because he's, Adam starts talking about the
- 38:39murder of his mother, and this makes
- 38:41Ryan: Yeah,
- 38:42Kearns: and he's gonna use all of his forehead on this guy.
- 38:45And he comes in and he's gonna club him in the head with the butt of the weapon.
- 38:48And then Adam touches his hand to see for sure, so he can
- 38:53see all the things he's done.
- 38:54And we get to see what happened then.
- 38:56And then Doyle just collapses to his knees.
- 38:59Like, this is, there's Holy Novocaine or something in it, in
- 39:03Ryan: he was in shock.
- 39:04Kearns: Is that what it is?
- 39:05Ryan: How did you know?
- 39:07Kearns: he becomes so easy to subdue McConaughey is just like holding
- 39:11him like this, this grown man.
- 39:16That's the only part of the movie that I felt was like really kind of like,
- 39:20Jon: yeah.
- 39:21Ryan: Oh,
- 39:21Jon: that, yeah.
- 39:23Kearns: then we get the, fun ending of the movie where McConaughey's
- 39:27character Adam, um, disarms him, gets the keys off him, kills him,
- 39:35Ryan: yep.
- 39:36Kearns: very, explains why the bodies are the way they are, buries him, and
- 39:38then we get to see the ending, which I, I can let somebody else, I'll let
- 39:42Ryan maybe talk about like what we find out about Adam finally at the very end.
- 39:46Um, but one thing they
- 39:47Ryan: Oh
- 39:48Kearns: before this happens, I should say, is we do establish
- 39:51in the movie early on that God is protecting them by Paxton says this.
- 39:55So
- 39:55Ryan: yes.
- 39:56Kearns: footage of them can be viewed, no eyewitnesses will
- 39:59remember what they look like.
- 40:01And we think that's all bullshit.
- 40:03then
- 40:03Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 40:03Kearns: end of the movie, we find out all the video is completely,
- 40:08uh, ruined and none of the people know what he looks like.
- 40:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:12Kearns: further
- 40:13Ryan: Yeah,
- 40:13Kearns: by what happens at the end.
- 40:14Ryan,
- 40:15Ryan: well, yeah.
- 40:16I mean, you have Agent Hu he doesn't remember what a
- 40:19Kearns: is
- 40:19Ryan: like Adam's
- 40:21Jon: Oh
- 40:21Ryan: hole.
- 40:22Kearns: Oh.
- 40:22Oh ho.
- 40:24Okay.
- 40:25Ryan: That's hole.
- 40:26Um,
- 40:26Kearns: You sounded
- 40:27Ryan: agent Hole.
- 40:27Kearns: ho,
- 40:28Ryan: No.
- 40:29Kearns: ho,
- 40:30Ryan: Hole.
- 40:31It's, it's, remind me of Us
- 40:34Jon: that sounds like it's completely something different
- 40:36Kearns: ho.
- 40:37Jon: 'cause that that last
- 40:38Ryan: Hole.
- 40:39Jon: sounded like Asian whole.
- 40:41Kearns: Oh no.
- 40:45Is it
- 40:45Ryan: I'm thinking of Steel Panther right now.
- 40:48That's all I'm thinking about.
- 40:49Kearns: It's agent Hole.
- 40:51All.
- 40:51Ryan: Agent Hu um, agent Hu uh, doesn't remember what Adam looks like.
- 40:57Um, the video's all scrambled.
- 40:59You kinda see like maybe God's hand.
- 41:02God has a. Part in all this.
- 41:05Adam's doing all his work.
- 41:06And then he goes to the sheriff's office to talk to him about Fon.
- 41:10And uh, Adam comes out as the sheriff.
- 41:13Kearns: Adam is the
- 41:14Ryan: And you know,
- 41:15Kearns: He's got a
- 41:15Ryan: I immediately knew like that's where I was gonna go.
- 41:20I immediately knew.
- 41:20I was like, that
- 41:21Kearns: for
- 41:22Ryan: is definitely, Matthew is gonna be walking out.
- 41:25And sure enough he walks out, he's like, sweet as humble pie.
- 41:29He like sweet talks him, he gets him out.
- 41:31And it's interesting 'cause at the end he shakes his hand and he's
- 41:36like, you're a good man, agent Hu.
- 41:38And it's like, he looks at him confused and he's like, you're a good man.
- 41:43And basically God's work's gonna continue.
- 41:47Or the God's hand is gonna continue 'cause that baby's not gonna be right in honor.
- 41:51King of Hill.
- 41:52Kearns: Yeah,
- 41:52Ryan: King of the Hill, that boy ain't right.
- 41:55Jon: Yeah.
- 41:56Kearns: Bobby.
- 41:57Jon: it's revealed that not only is Adam the sheriff, he's married and his
- 42:02wife is pregnant, I take that handshake with hu a little bit differently
- 42:08because that the look Hull gives him is almost like, like the slightest
- 42:15bit of recognition at that moment.
- 42:17Like, wait a minute,
- 42:20Kearns: This probably feels like deja vu.
- 42:21Jon: of know you.
- 42:23Kearns: Yeah,
- 42:24Ryan: Yeah.
- 42:24Kearns: feels like deja vu.
- 42:25and it could be that like he smells like shoe leather like Al McConaughey do or
- 42:29something, and that's what's hitting him like from that night, maybe he couldn't
- 42:32fully mask everything, but, that's how the movie ends, which is a great way
- 42:37to do it because it leads the viewer to believe in McConaughey and Paxton
- 42:42vindicating them, vilifying the character we rooted for, for the entire movie
- 42:47Ryan: Yeah.
- 42:48Kearns: And just, kind of wraps it up in a pretty bow until you become friends
- 42:52with John who screws it all up for you because he's got a crazy theory.
- 42:55So let's hear that one
- 42:56Jon: Okay.
- 42:57I see.
- 42:57Ryan: No, I'm ready.
- 42:58Jon: is that crazy.
- 42:59Number one, I believe dad had visions.
- 43:03Ryan: Okay.
- 43:04Jon: like,
- 43:05Ryan: agree with that.
- 43:05Jon: I don't believe that they're, they were from God, I believe dad from the
- 43:09stress of losing a wife, raising two boys.
- 43:12It, you know, all those other things has had some sort of
- 43:15mental break or dead has a tumor.
- 43:19It's 1979.
- 43:20Kearns: It is not,
- 43:21Jon: caught that early.
- 43:22Kearns: it's not Kakuma.
- 43:25Jon: So
- 43:26Ryan: But Mr. Kimball,
- 43:27Kearns: do?
- 43:27Jon: Dead.
- 43:28See now
- 43:30Ryan: Mr. Kimball.
- 43:32Jon: Fenton never
- 43:33Kearns: Ryan?
- 43:34It's so disturbing.
- 43:35I'm sorry, John.
- 43:36Jon: It's okay.
- 43:38F Fenton never sees anything,
- 43:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:43Jon: anything.
- 43:43He's old
- 43:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:45Jon: not fall for dad's crap.
- 43:48Adam, on the other hand, is in that young impressionable age,
- 43:52and he, you know, idolizes dad.
- 43:57we'll see and do whatever dad tells him.
- 43:59And to the point, if you remember, there's a part in the movie where Adam
- 44:04comes to dad with his own demon list
- 44:07Kearns: I forgot
- 44:08Ryan: Yep.
- 44:09Jon: Yeah, they're so,
- 44:10Ryan: from school?
- 44:11Jon: dad, yeah.
- 44:11Dad's
- 44:12Kearns: To be his first hit list.
- 44:13Jon: the kid that bullies you?
- 44:15Isn't that the kid you don't like?
- 44:16Isn't that like they, so they Adam's just putting together a hit list?
- 44:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:22Ryan: Yes.
- 44:23Kearns: great.
- 44:23Not a good look ahead of his
- 44:25Ryan: No.
- 44:25Kearns: but still not great.
- 44:27I.
- 44:27Jon: like, they, they give you that moment where you see the visions of the people
- 44:32that dad killed, the demons that dad killed and the things that they had done.
- 44:37You know, the old guy being bad with kids and the other stuff.
- 44:42Like, only Adam ever sees that because Adam at that point is just
- 44:47completely brainwashed by dad.
- 44:51Ryan: Yeah,
- 44:51Kearns: how do you explain the C-C-T-U-E footage and agent hole?
- 44:56Jon: It, it
- 44:58Kearns: He's got a hole in his head.
- 44:59Ryan: that is true.
- 45:00Jon: hus the hard one to explain, but remember what Adam's job is at that point.
- 45:08Ryan: He's a sheriff.
- 45:09Jon: He's a
- 45:09Kearns: you think he screwed with the footage in the FBI building?
- 45:12Jon: those those old CCTV cameras could be disrupted by signals
- 45:19Kearns: Um.
- 45:20Jon: that.
- 45:20He's not walking
- 45:21Ryan: Okay.
- 45:22Jon: with a little disrupt thing to disrupt the camera feeds in his pocket.
- 45:26Ryan: You don't think they searched them though?
- 45:28Kearns: Those things were awful to like from the jump.
- 45:31Those things were awful.
- 45:32Like you ever put in an old copy of a VHS tape and try to watch it, could have had
- 45:37Ryan: Static?
- 45:38Jon: Yeah.
- 45:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 45:39Kearns: style.
- 45:42Jon: and you don't know.
- 45:43They could have been recording over tapes.
- 45:45And the more you record over something on an old VHS tape, the more you get that
- 45:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:51Jon: blur.
- 45:52And so, you know, and then Adam has, has a demon list because Adam's a sheriff.
- 45:59Adam knows who the bad people are.
- 46:02Kearns: Which is, I
- 46:03Ryan: Yeah.
- 46:03Kearns: this into the movie
- 46:05Ryan: Okay.
- 46:05Kearns: for people like John specifically, but I think they bake it in so that
- 46:09the suspension of disbelief throughout the movie isn't completely wiped away.
- 46:15you're, you get to the end and you could, you could choose to.
- 46:20Oh, they're a who?
- 46:21It's a holy warrior lineage.
- 46:23And that's neat.
- 46:24Like a Joan of Ark style story, which is really kind of what this feels like.
- 46:27'cause that's the Joan of Ark story that you're getting for the whole
- 46:30finding and destroying demons part.
- 46:32But then you get on the other side, you get like kind of the reality of the
- 46:37situation is psychologically speaking what saying holds a lot of water.
- 46:42And if you get a David Blaine style guy, you can make Agent Hall think that he
- 46:46saw Timon and Puma at the stupid thing.
- 46:49You know, the power of suggestion.
- 46:51It's
- 46:52Ryan: Matata.
- 46:52Kearns: boom.
- 46:53Jon: So the one part that I really can can't explain directly is
- 46:58where dad gets his list from.
- 47:02Kearns: The phone
- 47:02Ryan: Yeah,
- 47:03Kearns: she seems just scrolling through the phone book.
- 47:05Jon: But, you
- 47:06Ryan: he is just guessing.
- 47:08Jon: maybe actually hit on bad people.
- 47:12'cause we don't even know that the people that, aside from Brad,
- 47:15we don't know the people that he kills are actually bad people
- 47:18Kearns: In one of the flashback, in one of the flashbacks, they
- 47:22show us Adam's take prudent.
- 47:24So admittedly Adam's take, but he is dragging the kid out of the car.
- 47:28The the petter ass is doing that.
- 47:29Jon: that's the only thing that we have that indicates that
- 47:32those are actually bad people.
- 47:34Kearns: And then the wife had slit the husband's throat to
- 47:37Jon: yeah.
- 47:38How does Dad come up with a list?
- 47:41Kearns: holy guy though
- 47:43Jon: dad's a
- 47:43Ryan: The angel.
- 47:45Jon: Everybody comes through a mechanic shop at some point
- 47:47for one thing or another.
- 47:50talk,
- 47:51Kearns: a lazy
- 47:52Jon: some
- 47:52Kearns: mechanic too, he's taking naps under their cars.
- 47:54Jon: Brad's the easiest one to figure out because like.
- 47:57Kearns: He's a dick.
- 47:59Jon: Yeah, he's just a,
- 47:59Ryan: Yeah,
- 48:00Jon: just openly a dick.
- 48:01He does not hide what a bad person he is.
- 48:04Kearns: Yeah,
- 48:05Ryan: no, absolutely not.
- 48:06Kearns: of us used to mask better.
- 48:10Jon: I have this other stray theory going
- 48:12Kearns: Oh God,
- 48:14Jon: that I've been working on for the last day and a half.
- 48:18Kearns: what is it said?
- 48:19Jon: there was no Fenton by the end of the movie, even before Adam kills him.
- 48:24Kearns: Really?
- 48:25Jon: I think Adam killed him in the shed.
- 48:27Kearns: Yeah, like a Mo Mother Bates sort of situation going
- 48:30Ryan: Huh.
- 48:31Kearns: he
- 48:31Jon: I th
- 48:32Kearns: up without his brother.
- 48:33Jon: I think Fenton has been dead the whole time, and Adam has been,
- 48:37has been doing all the killing.
- 48:39Kearns: cool.
- 48:39The other one I didn't like at all, but that
- 48:41Ryan: Okay.
- 48:43That one's a good one.
- 48:44Kearns: Yeah, that's a good one.
- 48:45John.
- 48:46Way to way to
- 48:47Ryan: That would,
- 48:48Kearns: yourself in my eyes.
- 48:51Ryan: that would give it such a deeper meaning.
- 48:53Jon: And I think it works too because
- 48:58you wanna appeal to an audience, the, um, as big an audience as
- 49:01you can with a movie like this.
- 49:03And if you, just at the end reveal that, it's all religion, you're
- 49:07gonna tune people like me out.
- 49:09Kearns: Yeah, true.
- 49:10So you need to kind of, they
- 49:11Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:11Kearns: then because they put it on the scale and you gotta
- 49:14figure out which side weighs more.
- 49:16So that's a cool way to
- 49:17Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:17Kearns: really does.
- 49:17The movie hits, and like Ryan was saying earlier, um, Robert, Robert Ebert,
- 49:23Robert Ebert, uh, gave it four stars.
- 49:27Um,
- 49:27Ryan: Yep.
- 49:28Kearns: was out to lunch that day, I guess.
- 49:30Jon: uh,
- 49:31Ryan: I was just Ebert who wrote the review.
- 49:33Jon: by
- 49:33Kearns: By 2002.
- 49:35Ryan: Uh,
- 49:35Kearns: It's passable.
- 49:37Ryan: uh, I, I, I think he was, he, I think he was dead.
- 49:41Kearns: Um,
- 49:42Jon: have been
- 49:42Ryan: but
- 49:42Kearns: Ebert was always hard on horror movies.
- 49:44This is how we ended up calling, we were starting on the open with it not being
- 49:48a horror movie, was talking about this.
- 49:50So
- 49:50Ryan: yeah.
- 49:51Kearns: on movies like this though.
- 49:53Gave it four
- 49:53Ryan: Yes.
- 49:54Jon: Cisco died in 99, so he,
- 49:57Kearns: Aw.
- 49:57Jon: yeah, this was,
- 49:58Ryan: So that's why it was a solo act,
- 50:00Kearns: he heard Will Smith's, um, wild, wild West album and he was
- 50:04like, I need to die immediately,
- 50:06Ryan: the Wild, wild West.
- 50:07Um, Ebert though said it was extraordinary work, concealing in its depth, not
- 50:13only unexpected story turns, but also implications hidden at first that
- 50:17make it even deeper and more sad.
- 50:20Kearns: Agreed.
- 50:21Ryan: He was, he was into sad films, so like this was up
- 50:24his alley and it just worked.
- 50:27It's like Silence the Lambs.
- 50:29He loved that film for the sadness that it brought, not for Anthony Hopkins eating
- 50:34a face and putting it over his face.
- 50:37Um, but it does bring that I, felt bad for these kids.
- 50:43It's just like what they went through and
- 50:46Kearns: That's
- 50:46Ryan: bad for this.
- 50:48Well, you feel bad for the dad too because it's like he went through all
- 50:51this, this crap in his life and he has a breakdown and this is his way out.
- 50:57And especially at that time, no one really knew how to help
- 51:01really in a situation like that.
- 51:03It's like, oh, that's all, that's old Jerry.
- 51:05He's just a screw nut.
- 51:07It's okay.
- 51:07But he fixed a mean car.
- 51:09You know?
- 51:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:11Um, that's, that's pretty much, uh, how we land, frailty.
- 51:18don't have much more on it.
- 51:19Is there anything you guys wanna touch on before we roll into top fives?
- 51:23Ryan: I loved it.
- 51:24It was my first watch.
- 51:26Um, reading reviews.
- 51:28Some people like, except eBird and others, uh, some people wear a little sour on it.
- 51:35Um, not a lot.
- 51:37And,
- 51:37Kearns: thought it was good.
- 51:39Ryan: but that's the perfect piece for a film like this.
- 51:43Jon: Yeah.
- 51:44Kearns: I was just validating those idiots.
- 51:45Jon: one.
- 51:46Kearns: No, it's just a good movie.
- 51:47It's a good movie.
- 51:47Through and through.
- 51:49Well
- 51:49Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 51:50And uh,
- 51:50Kearns: jump is perfect.
- 51:51They pick the right linoleum.
- 51:53Ryan: yep.
- 51:53Kearns: like the seventies in this movie you're watching it.
- 51:57It's just good.
- 51:58Kids got like the old seventies style basketball, um, Adam and that one
- 52:02scene where they're playing ball, and I thought that was a nice touch.
- 52:04It's just good movie.
- 52:05The kids, the way they talk to each other are old school style.
- 52:10the, you know what the most heartbreaking scene of this goddamn movie is, is when
- 52:13Fenton's invited over to his buddy's house to have to have a good old time.
- 52:18And dad's like,
- 52:19Ryan: Yeah,
- 52:19Kearns: go murder him tonight.
- 52:21That, that seems sucks.
- 52:23Jon: We have
- 52:23Ryan: that did suck.
- 52:24Jon: tonight.
- 52:25Boy.
- 52:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 52:26It's like, that sucks, man.
- 52:27Let the kid go.
- 52:29Ryan: Change your plans.
- 52:30Kearns: Yeah, but I digress.
- 52:33so that's, frailty.
- 52:34I love it.
- 52:35It's one of my favorite movies.
- 52:36Uh,
- 52:37Ryan: Yep.
- 52:38Kearns: has some top fives that are loosely related to the subject matter
- 52:42in this movie, and it's all names.
- 52:44Opioid based drugs that come up in movies like Fentanyl.
- 52:49For Fentanyl.
- 52:50Ryan: A hundred percent.
- 52:51Kearns: your top
- 52:51Ryan: Well actually my top five is top five movies with serial killers.
- 52:57Kearns: I was way off.
- 52:59Ryan: Yeah.
- 52:59Um, honorary mention to natural born killers.
- 53:03Uh, there's the cat.
- 53:07Oh,
- 53:07Jon: say hi lane.
- 53:10Ryan: hi lane.
- 53:12Kearns: I get licked and everything.
- 53:14Ryan: Special guest star.
- 53:17My guys are sleeping right now.
- 53:18Thank God.
- 53:19'cause they're wild.
- 53:21Like this movie.
- 53:22Starting off with top five, number five.
- 53:25death proof.
- 53:26Kearns: Oh.
- 53:26Ryan: It's a crazy stuntman who goes on a crazy ride killing people.
- 53:31And the ending where it's like a 45 minute chase scene through the desert is amazing.
- 53:37And it's tarantino's only horror film, or it's considered horror.
- 53:42I consider it horror like that b movie Thriller Grindhouse
- 53:47and Kurt Russell stuntman Mike.
- 53:50It's just phenomenal.
- 53:51number four, I gotta go with my guy, um, Vincent Rio, the Cell.
- 53:59As a kid, I did love it.
- 54:00And it's like, I originally loved it for Jennifer Lopez,
- 54:04you know, but as I get older,
- 54:08Kearns: as she
- 54:08Ryan: huh?
- 54:09Kearns: Let's talk about her as she gets older.
- 54:12Ryan: Well, as I got older, I, I found out it wasn't my love for Jennifer Lopez,
- 54:16it was my love for Vincent Donofrio.
- 54:18'cause he kills it in that movie
- 54:20Kearns: It's a great
- 54:20Ryan: and it's just.
- 54:22It is good.
- 54:23It's um, it was a sleeper 'cause I think it was right after she did Gigi, right?
- 54:30With Ben Affleck.
- 54:31Jon: Ly.
- 54:31Ryan: Oh God.
- 54:32Kearns: whatever it
- 54:33Ryan: See,
- 54:33Jon: Yeah.
- 54:34Ryan: that's why it's,
- 54:35Kearns: cell didn't hit initially.
- 54:37I think it did better at like Blockbuster.
- 54:39Jon: Yeah,
- 54:40Ryan: yes,
- 54:40Jon: so too.
- 54:41Yeah.
- 54:43Ryan: I remember the cutout and, um, my dad taking me to Blockbuster
- 54:47and I was looking at it and he was like, come on, I'm looking at movies.
- 54:50I think he rented it and he got a kick out of it.
- 54:53But I remember that big cutout right there and I was like,
- 54:57this is, this looks pretty cool,
- 54:58Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 54:59Ryan: but I'm gonna say this.
- 55:01There's a better cutout and it's my number three and that's
- 55:06the cutout for American Psycho.
- 55:07Kearns: That's a good one.
- 55:08I.
- 55:08Ryan: That's my number three.
- 55:10Oh God.
- 55:11I, since high school introduced into it in high school, uh, freshman year, I. Uh,
- 55:17Christian Bale, Willam, Defoe, jar Leto.
- 55:20There's so many great scenes and the question is, is did
- 55:24he really kill those people?
- 55:26But I mean, we can answer that for another day because number two is
- 55:32the original psycho Alfred Hitchcock.
- 55:35Norman Bates is a serial killer, you know, even though he is a mother, um, he's
- 55:42just, he's killing people left and right.
- 55:44And he's kind of like, I guess the start, the start of early slasher
- 55:49inspiration as well as like the first serial killer to be depicted on screen.
- 55:55'cause his character was also based on Ed Keen,
- 55:58Kearns: Yeah,
- 55:59Ryan: I believe, at least for some stories.
- 56:01Um, Texas Chainsaw definitely made.
- 56:04Kearns: based on ing really.
- 56:06Ryan: Yeah,
- 56:08Kearns: But
- 56:08Ryan: yeah.
- 56:08True.
- 56:09Kearns: the big batty when it comes to scary serial killers who creep through
- 56:12the darkness and don't smile at you in
- 56:15Ryan: Got it.
- 56:17It, you know, hearing, real quick, hearing his story.
- 56:20Uh, when I took forensics in high school, we covered serial
- 56:23killers for the second part.
- 56:25And, uh, he's, he's, he's a fucked up dude.
- 56:28I mean, they're all fucked up, but he was, he was really fucked up.
- 56:31Kearns: That's why he's the
- 56:31Ryan: Just
- 56:32Kearns: one.
- 56:32Ryan: say it.
- 56:33Kearns: A lot of people think like, well they do John Wayne Gacy and all
- 56:36them, ever watch a Long Came Spider, it's a good movie that runs through
- 56:40Sigourney Weaver's character, runs through all the serial killers in a fun way.
- 56:43She get to, she kind of gives them personalities that may
- 56:46or may not actually be true.
- 56:47It's a fun way to differentiate them.
- 56:50'cause she's talking about that while she's, I think it's a long kid spider.
- 56:53I might be thinking of another newbie.
- 56:55Jon: Was a copycat.
- 56:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 56:56Copycat, my bad
- 56:58Ryan: Okay.
- 56:58Kearns: with the,
- 56:59Ryan: I was gonna say Morgan Freeman.
- 57:00Kearns: and actor.
- 57:01Jon: thought, I thought the James Patterson shout out
- 57:04was a little odd for you.
- 57:05I.
- 57:07Kearns: True.
- 57:07I, I'm not a huge fan of James Patterson.
- 57:09not an anti fan either.
- 57:10He is just not my cup today, so, yeah.
- 57:13Shoney Weaver's character does a good job in copycat giving us an idea of what
- 57:19the different serial killers were like.
- 57:20Ed Geen, out of all of them, there's a couple other ones who are liking ge.
- 57:24There's a reason why he's the inspiration for leather face and things like that.
- 57:28he's a fucked up guy.
- 57:29Ryan: he would sew the skin, he'd make upholstery.
- 57:33I have the couches stuff.
- 57:34Just a sick individual, but nothing is sicker.
- 57:38If we go back to 1995, my number one film, it's our favorite film, Gwyneth Paltrow,
- 57:45Kearns: Oh, I hope Brad gets cut
- 57:46Ryan: Brad Pitt,
- 57:47Kearns: Yes.
- 57:47Ryan: Morgan Freeman,
- 57:49Kearns: in the
- 57:49Ryan: seven.
- 57:52Jon: What's in
- 57:52Ryan: like, it's so good.
- 57:54What's in the,
- 57:55Kearns: I just want a little
- 57:56Ryan: what's in the.
- 57:57Kearns: right here.
- 58:00You know what's funny?
- 58:01I have nothing against her.
- 58:02It's just the fact that everybody else seems to hate her so much
- 58:05and I just, I just love when she gets, she eats it in movies.
- 58:08Ryan: So I'll say this, I, um, in high school, I was on the set of a movie.
- 58:13I think we've talked about this.
- 58:14Two lovers.
- 58:15I met Joaquin Phoenix.
- 58:16She was there.
- 58:17She is, no, she's, she's not a pleasant person.
- 58:21At least she wasn't pleasant that day.
- 58:23And Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal, but she, um, she was a real bitch.
- 58:28Kearns: damn.
- 58:29Ryan: it just was like, ah,
- 58:31Kearns: of her
- 58:31Ryan: like
- 58:31Kearns: scented candles?
- 58:35Ryan: she stormed off
- 58:37Kearns: of the
- 58:37Ryan: and.
- 58:38Kearns: but it sounds the same.
- 58:39Let your imaginations do the work for you.
- 58:43Ryan: She, she stormed off set.
- 58:45They had to stand in and it was just like waiting really all day as people walked
- 58:50back and forth trying to set the stage.
- 58:52And then they did like a couple scenes and then they were off.
- 58:56It was cool to see them act live, but she was just really
- 58:59like, it was just unflattering.
- 59:01So yes, it was good that her head was in that damn box, but to go
- 59:06back, um, like talk about frailty and the religious and all that.
- 59:12Seven's got that.
- 59:14The seven deadly sins.
- 59:15And if you've never seen seven, definitely watch seven.
- 59:19Kearns: Oh,
- 59:19Ryan: It's an excellent film.
- 59:21Kearns: Ryan, this is
- 59:22Ryan: if we,
- 59:22Kearns: top five of yours.
- 59:24This is my favorite.
- 59:24Top five of yours, buddy.
- 59:25Ryan: why
- 59:27Jon: No.
- 59:27Ryan: thank you.
- 59:28Jon: lambs.
- 59:28Kearns: Yeah, he is a serial killer.
- 59:30Ryan: That's, that's not a horror film.
- 59:33I consider, I consider, I consider like, okay, so seven,
- 59:37they consider a crime thriller.
- 59:39Kearns: a little bit more.
- 59:39Ryan.
- 59:40Geez, John.
- 59:41Ryan: I
- 59:44ibel.
- 59:45It's, it's not, it's a drama.
- 59:47Seven is more of a horror film because of what?
- 59:50Okay.
- 59:51So Hannibal Lecter, eating faces and cannibalism.
- 59:54Kearns: be
- 59:54Ryan: a drama.
- 59:55Kearns: I'm just making a
- 59:56Ryan: Oh.
- 59:57Uh,
- 59:58Kearns: you're
- 59:58Ryan: just saying, I'm just saying, saying, but, oh,
- 1:00:03Kearns: can
- 1:00:03Jon: We,
- 1:00:03Ryan: uh, it's so good.
- 1:00:05Jon: have to get, I am.
- 1:00:07We have to get, Henry Porter was a serial killer for you.
- 1:00:11'cause I
- 1:00:12Ryan: It's,
- 1:00:13Jon: want to see where that winds up on your list.
- 1:00:17Ryan: it's been on, um.
- 1:00:20Oh, it's, I've seen clips, I've seen the trailer.
- 1:00:23It's always been like, I wanna see it, but it's like when you read about it and
- 1:00:28Michael Rucker is just an amazing actor.
- 1:00:31I love him.
- 1:00:31And he goes to a dark place and him with hair is even more menacing than him.
- 1:00:37Bald getting a chocolate pretzel, you know, it's just,
- 1:00:44Kearns: That means
- 1:00:45Ryan: but
- 1:00:45Kearns: Um, let's move on to John.
- 1:00:48Stop five because I'm going to a dark place right now.
- 1:00:52Jon: All right.
- 1:00:53My top
- 1:00:53Ryan: dark chocolate pretzel.
- 1:00:56Jon: pretty unpredictable.
- 1:00:58Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:58So he asked us to predict it.
- 1:01:00I forgot what I, I came up with, but it was dumb.
- 1:01:02Ryan: I went Bill Paxton.
- 1:01:04Kearns: I
- 1:01:04Ryan: It's like Bill Paxton.
- 1:01:07Yeah.
- 1:01:08Jon: you were closer,
- 1:01:10Kearns: Well, I wasn't,
- 1:01:11Jon: but not there.
- 1:01:12Kearns: um, uh, let's do movies.
- 1:01:15Jon: closer,
- 1:01:16Kearns: without chicks in 'em, because this one's a pretty pretty don heavy film.
- 1:01:21Jon: this is
- 1:01:22Ryan: What about the nurse?
- 1:01:23Jon: pretty testosterone.
- 1:01:24Kearns: Nurse, secretary.
- 1:01:26Killer.
- 1:01:26Killer lady.
- 1:01:28Jon: yeah, there's not all, not a lot of women, not, not a lot of
- 1:01:32lines for women in frailty either.
- 1:01:34Kearns: no.
- 1:01:37Your job is to be pregnant.
- 1:01:40Jon: I
- 1:01:40Kearns: So
- 1:01:40Jon: top five Dazed and confused cast members in horror movies.
- 1:01:46Ryan: I'm cool with that.
- 1:01:47Kearns: Booth's character was the Dazed and Confused in this one.
- 1:01:51Ryan: Matthew mcc?
- 1:01:53Kearns: Oh, duh.
- 1:01:54From actual Dazed and Confused.
- 1:01:57right.
- 1:01:58That was pretty good.
- 1:01:59Jon: these two, these two caveats on there.
- 1:02:02Kearns: I would've gotten that if I wasn't dying.
- 1:02:04Jon: on here for Texas Chainsaw Massacre because I pretty
- 1:02:08sure I gave that one already.
- 1:02:09Kearns: Yeah, you did.
- 1:02:10Jon: And,
- 1:02:11Ryan: Yes.
- 1:02:11Next generation.
- 1:02:12Jon: Yep.
- 1:02:13And I left Nikki Kat off the list for Planet Terror 'cause I'm pretty
- 1:02:18sure I gave that already also.
- 1:02:20Kearns: Okay.
- 1:02:22Ryan: Uh, yes,
- 1:02:23Kearns: Fair.
- 1:02:24Jon: So my number five is Mileage Jovovich in the entire Resident Evil franchise.
- 1:02:32Kearns: Fair.
- 1:02:33Ryan: I'll take it.
- 1:02:34Jon: So she's Michelle Burrows in Dazed and Confused, the
- 1:02:37guitar playing stoner chick.
- 1:02:40Kearns: She's like,
- 1:02:40Ryan: Yep,
- 1:02:41Kearns: she's crazy hot.
- 1:02:43Jon: Yeah,
- 1:02:44Kearns: about her in that movie is just
- 1:02:45Ryan: yep.
- 1:02:45Kearns: hot.
- 1:02:46When I was younger, I should say, now I'm like old.
- 1:02:49But
- 1:02:50Jon: yeah.
- 1:02:51Yeah.
- 1:02:51She would
- 1:02:52Ryan: And they cut out a lot of our.
- 1:02:55Jon: yeah.
- 1:02:55Kearns: she, I couldn't speak well
- 1:02:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:58Kearns: then.
- 1:02:59Yeah.
- 1:02:59Jon: She, she goes on to be Alice in the franchise based on video games.
- 1:03:04And, you know, they're fine.
- 1:03:07They don't quite capture the video games, but they're fine.
- 1:03:12Kearns: They, they are phones.
- 1:03:13Ryan: Yeah, you're fine.
- 1:03:14Kearns: than the animated ones.
- 1:03:16Jon: my number four, it seems like it's out of Orion Playbook,
- 1:03:22is Parker Posey in Scream three.
- 1:03:27Ryan: Yes.
- 1:03:28With the cameo by Jay and Silent Bob.
- 1:03:31Jon: she's Darla and Dazed and Confused.
- 1:03:33A senior who
- 1:03:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:03:35Jon: the freshman hazing, just a little too much air raid freshman.
- 1:03:43Kearns: That's
- 1:03:43Ryan: So when they give the The Bies Right.
- 1:03:45And the powder.
- 1:03:46It's such a messy scene.
- 1:03:47Then they bring 'em through the car wash.
- 1:03:49Kearns: She plays
- 1:03:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:03:50Kearns: so well.
- 1:03:51Ryan: Flip over Bacon.
- 1:03:53Jon: yep.
- 1:03:54Um,
- 1:03:55Ryan: have to watch this movie now tonight, John.
- 1:03:58Jon: yeah, you should in
- 1:04:01Ryan: Dayson Confused.
- 1:04:03Jon: and, um, she portrays Gail Weathers in, stab the movie.
- 1:04:07Within the movie I.
- 1:04:08Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:04:09Ryan: Yep.
- 1:04:10Jon: And
- 1:04:11Kearns: a bitch.
- 1:04:12Jon: Fair is much less well than Gale Weather does.
- 1:04:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:04:16Ryan: Well, don't forget, she also dates Dewey.
- 1:04:19Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:19Kearns: want to do Dewey, but, um, all right.
- 1:04:23I'm curious about is, is no
- 1:04:27Jon: three,
- 1:04:28Kearns: Uhhuh.
- 1:04:29Jon: Ben Affleck Phantoms.
- 1:04:33Kearns: You
- 1:04:34Ryan: All right.
- 1:04:34Kearns: an
- 1:04:35Ryan: I was thinking about that.
- 1:04:35Kearns: movie that is an
- 1:04:37Ryan: Yes.
- 1:04:37Kearns: so the book Phantoms is superior to the movie Phantoms, but not by much.
- 1:04:42It's just a, it flushes it out a little bit more.
- 1:04:45Kons.
- 1:04:46I told you guys, I love old school Konts.
- 1:04:48Phantoms is like the end of good old school coons, so it's pretty much
- 1:04:50when it stops, demonize and stuff came after, but it's like right there.
- 1:04:54That movie is done well for how fast the movie is and stuff.
- 1:04:59It's like, it's hard to get that right and they, they nailed it.
- 1:05:04Jon: yep.
- 1:05:04So.
- 1:05:06In Dazing Confused, he's Fred O'Bannon, a senior who is even
- 1:05:12more into the hazing ritual than Darla, to the point where he got
- 1:05:16Ryan: Yeah,
- 1:05:16Jon: held back so he could do it again.
- 1:05:20Ryan: because he was that stupid.
- 1:05:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:23And in Phantoms, he's the sheriff helping to fight off the evil entity.
- 1:05:27And
- 1:05:27Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:05:28Jon: I just have to say, Affleck you the bomb in phantoms, yo.
- 1:05:35Kearns: Which one is that?
- 1:05:36Jane style Pop.
- 1:05:37Oh no.
- 1:05:37Is that dogma
- 1:05:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:05:39Kearns: and.
- 1:05:39Jon: I think
- 1:05:40Ryan: Uh,
- 1:05:40Jon: back I
- 1:05:41Ryan: back.
- 1:05:42Yeah, that strikes back.
- 1:05:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:43Jon: number
- 1:05:44Ryan: forget Le
- 1:05:46Jon: Go ahead.
- 1:05:48Ryan: I was gonna say, don't forget, leave Schreiber's in that movie,
- 1:05:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:51Ryan: young Leave Schreiber.
- 1:05:52Jon: Yep.
- 1:05:52Ryan: Sorry.
- 1:05:53Jon: Yep.
- 1:05:53Ryan: I'm a Leave Schreiber guy.
- 1:05:54Jon: tonight.
- 1:05:55Ryan: I.
- 1:05:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:56Phantom's.
- 1:05:56He's
- 1:05:57Ryan: I'll tell you this.
- 1:05:59I got it as a double feature real quick with the faculty.
- 1:06:02Never saw it, watched it one night.
- 1:06:06It's a good film.
- 1:06:07Check it out.
- 1:06:08Kearns: They do a better job with the faculty style vibe than Phantom's leave.
- 1:06:12Striver does.
- 1:06:12Anyway.
- 1:06:14The not untrustworthy, uh, compromised adults phantoms.
- 1:06:18Very good.
- 1:06:20He's got a great line too.
- 1:06:21I forgot his one liner from, from Phantoms that he has when he is already screwed up.
- 1:06:25It's good though.
- 1:06:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:28Kearns: Alright.
- 1:06:29Jon: number two is Rory Cochran in Antlers.
- 1:06:34Kearns: nice.
- 1:06:36Jon: So you're not gonna remember Rory Cochran by name.
- 1:06:40You're gonna remember the Dazed and Confused character
- 1:06:43because he has every great line.
- 1:06:46He's the
- 1:06:48Kearns: union.
- 1:06:48Jon: s Stoner
- 1:06:49Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:06:49He's the
- 1:06:50Jon: Observationalist.
- 1:06:52every great man,
- 1:06:54Kearns: The guy who's in the room.
- 1:06:56There's the dude in, he's the dude in the bedroom, and they all get caught smoking
- 1:06:59weed and they can't party at the kid's
- 1:07:01Ryan: Okay.
- 1:07:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:07:02He's like
- 1:07:03Ryan: He's the,
- 1:07:03Kearns: is the stoner friend who became a career pot smoker in high school.
- 1:07:08He's that guy.
- 1:07:09He's the one who's like, he's not going to college.
- 1:07:11He's not, he's not doing any of that stuff.
- 1:07:14Ryan: he wears the hat, the entire film.
- 1:07:16Right.
- 1:07:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:17Kearns: he's,
- 1:07:17Ryan: Okay.
- 1:07:19And he asked, he asked the, uh, okay.
- 1:07:21Know who you're talking about.
- 1:07:22He's, he's a great character in that film.
- 1:07:25Jon: So in antlers, he's a police officer trying to help a teacher and a
- 1:07:32sheriff save a boy from a, a creature and antlers, despite having that Disney tag
- 1:07:39to it, I thought was really, really good
- 1:07:43Kearns: Was
- 1:07:43Ryan: Okay.
- 1:07:44Jon: they, there was some effective scares in there.
- 1:07:46it's a good movie
- 1:07:47Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:07:48Ryan: Write that down.
- 1:07:50Jon: will make Ryan happy.
- 1:07:52I. Number one, Adam Goldberg in the prophecy.
- 1:07:56Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 1:07:58Jon: So dazed and confused.
- 1:07:59He's big mouth.
- 1:08:00Mike spends a, a whole lot of time complaining, and then he starts a
- 1:08:05fight that he knows he can't win.
- 1:08:08Just hoping that it'll get broken up before he gets his ass kicked.
- 1:08:12Ryan: He should have just smoked the reefer.
- 1:08:15Kearns: yeah, it doesn't, I mean, it's a solid theory.
- 1:08:18It's just everybody was drunk and high and we're like, oh, cool.
- 1:08:20Fight.
- 1:08:22Nobody was stopping that.
- 1:08:24Ryan: If, if he didn't make the comment, it would've been fine.
- 1:08:26But he's like, oh, look at these dumb kids smoking reefer.
- 1:08:29And he's like, what'd you say?
- 1:08:30Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:08:31Ryan: I'm almost outta beer.
- 1:08:33I'm almost outta cigarettes.
- 1:08:34I'm almost outta smoke.
- 1:08:36I'm gonna kick your ass.
- 1:08:37Basically.
- 1:08:37I'm like, oh, Jesus.
- 1:08:39Kearns: he's got that
- 1:08:40Ryan: But he's got the, he gets that balls though, and he, he throws the
- 1:08:44first punch, his idea of I'll throw the first punch and then run away.
- 1:08:49Kearns: it did not work out.
- 1:08:50He got his ass.
- 1:08:51Jon: They never go more than a couple punches because people break it up.
- 1:08:55Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:08:57Jon: And who does he punch?
- 1:08:59That's Nikki Kat.
- 1:09:01Ryan: Yep.
- 1:09:03Kearns: All right.
- 1:09:03Good deal.
- 1:09:05Jon: So in, just to wrap it up, in, in the prophecy, he's, uh,
- 1:09:08Gabriel's assistant, human assistant.
- 1:09:12Kearns: Okay.
- 1:09:13He's familiar.
- 1:09:15Ryan: Yep.
- 1:09:15Kearns: He's vampire.
- 1:09:16Familiar.
- 1:09:17Jon: that's the top five
- 1:09:19Kearns: All right guys,
- 1:09:20Ryan: That's a good top five.
- 1:09:22Kearns: That was a good top five.
- 1:09:23I'm dying inside.
- 1:09:25So we're gonna end the episode.
- 1:09:26I hope you guys enjoy this one later, everybody.
- 1:09:29Ryan: Have a good night.
