Transcript
- 0:30Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast, episode 50,
- 0:34The Big Half Century, which means we're actually 2 episodes
- 0:38away from our first birthday, given we've done one each week.
- 0:41Episode 52 will be the one year anniversary.
- 0:44So we're closing in on the big birthday.
- 0:46Let us know what what you want us to do for that.
- 0:48Maybe we'll try and do a giveaway or do a cool little
- 0:51special episode. Ask us anything.
- 0:53Yeah, we'll try and change it up a bit.
- 0:56Anyway, I am joined temporarily by just Owen Dean Dean's waiting
- 1:00in the wings and he'll be with us shortly.
- 1:02So whilst we wait, how are you getting on Owen fresh off your
- 1:05indoor debut? Yeah, I'm good.
- 1:09Pulled up a little bit sore from it, I think.
- 1:11I definitely shocked the system by totally changing things up
- 1:14and running the 1500. But no, super, super fun.
- 1:17Like I was thinking like, why do people run marathons?
- 1:21Like they're actually just torture.
- 1:23Just run the shorter distance. It's way more fun, but no good
- 1:27experience. And yeah, it was nice to run
- 1:31indoor and the nice warmth rather than outside in a cold
- 1:35mucky field. So yeah, no, it was a good
- 1:37experience. Yeah.
- 1:39So indoors is going to be theme of the week given some of the
- 1:41results and you're at your training week as well.
- 1:44So looking forward to getting stuck into that.
- 1:46Did it did it mean that you watched any of the professional
- 1:49races any differently, having ran on the indoor track couple
- 1:53of days prior? I feel like I sort of had like
- 1:56more context of time. Like I didn't really know like,
- 2:01you know, like obviously let's say 348 mile is super, super
- 2:03fast, but it's only when you like run it and see how far off
- 2:07it you are, you're like, shit, these boys are these boys are
- 2:10moving. And like even the indoor, like
- 2:12it's totally different. Like after my race, I was like
- 2:15coughing up along, like, I don't know why, but it's like
- 2:18breathing in the air. It makes it really like actually
- 2:21hurts your chest and like running the banks, it's it's
- 2:24actually totally, totally different.
- 2:25And tactics really come into play because it's really, really
- 2:28hard to pass. And so, no, yeah, definitely
- 2:33looked at these races from like a different viewpoint.
- 2:36So would they have had like the heating on in there then, you
- 2:38reckon, because it was so cold outside?
- 2:40I don't, I don't. They probably have like a
- 2:44temperature regulator, but because like there's so many
- 2:47people like in the actual like indoor arena, like it's just,
- 2:51it's going to be warm as it is. There's like 2 main ones in
- 2:54Ireland. There's the one that lone that
- 2:55Iran on the weekend. And then there's another one,
- 2:58the NIA in Blanchardstown, the national indoor arena.
- 3:01And apparently the NIA one in Dublin is like worse for your
- 3:05chest, more humid. But yeah, I don't really, I
- 3:11don't think they've air con in Ireland being real.
- 3:13They just have radiators to make places warm.
- 3:15All right then how this episode's going to look is we've
- 3:18got results coming at you from all angles.
- 3:20We've got a top international half marathon which went down in
- 3:25Maragami, small fishing town in Japan.
- 3:30There was indoor meets all over the US and the UK and Ireland
- 3:34clearly main ones being the Mill Rose Games and some results
- 3:39coming from the John Terrier Classic 2.
- 3:41Then we've got some news about London Marathon released, their
- 3:44elite fields, we'll have training weeks, hopefully
- 3:48YouTube Diaries and I've definitely got a double trouble
- 3:51in reserve if no one else gets there in time.
- 3:55So whilst we wait for Dean, we'll save the results and we'll
- 3:59hear about how Owen got on in his race.
- 4:02Right, I'll do the whole week leading up to it.
- 4:06So it wasn't like an A race. This race it's sort of just like
- 4:09again, shock the system do something different.
- 4:12And so I didn't really taper for so on Monday I don't 60 minutes
- 4:17and I'm sort of dealing with this sort of like ankle nagle at
- 4:20the moment. So I it was pretty it was pretty
- 4:25sore after this run. So I didn't run Monday evening.
- 4:28I went to dishonor to get some heat into it instead.
- 4:32And yeah, I was sort of debating on like nearly like calling my
- 4:35season there because like, is it actually worth like running
- 4:38through this pain because Monday was sore.
- 4:41Went to dishonor Tuesday. I had planned to do 2 sessions.
- 4:45So the first one was 2 by 15 minutes off, 5 minute jog.
- 4:51And I done this on the treadmill inside because there was like
- 4:54serious floods in Ireland. Like on my way, I normally get
- 4:59up at 5:00 in the morning and head into head into a gym And
- 5:03that's like close to where I work And on the way in, like I
- 5:09fair enough. I heard like the rain during the
- 5:11night, but I was like, oh, it's just raining.
- 5:13Like it can't be that bad. But some meant to rain fell.
- 5:16So like on my way to the gym, I was like driving.
- 5:20I was, I live in the country. So driving down these country
- 5:22roads, there's like puddles normally.
- 5:25So I drove to a puddle and it just wasn't ending.
- 5:29It was literally like a river on the road and then like I was
- 5:33halfway through it and like the big, a big construction cone
- 5:36just like floats by me and I'm like shit.
- 5:39So I put the car into reverse to try and reverse it and it wasn't
- 5:42going back. So like shit, I've committed now
- 5:44I have to go through. So I kept on driving and just
- 5:49literally fought on the clutch and raved the engine and I got
- 5:53through it and I was like shit, that's bad.
- 5:55And then like I sort of hit a main Rd. but everyone was
- 5:58driving sort of like in the middle of the road because all
- 6:01of the verges were flooded. And yeah, so like I sent a
- 6:06message into like the work chat saying guys, I'd, I'd recommend
- 6:10not coming in. It's it's super super wet
- 6:12outside like. But that I've been pitch black
- 6:15as well. Oh yeah, pitch black.
- 6:17That's why I got a shock with the first flood I seen because I
- 6:21was only got my little one and then.
- 6:24All of a sudden you've got walls to come in through your window.
- 6:27I say if I open the door, water nearly would have came in.
- 6:31Yeah. And then I was getting into like
- 6:34the city or the town where I work, and there was another big
- 6:38flood. And I was like, I went through 1
- 6:40already. I might as well go through
- 6:41another one. And a Beamer.
- 6:43So BMW was just gone through it and it stopped halfway through.
- 6:47It like broke down. The engine got flooded with
- 6:49water. I don't know.
- 6:50So I had to help him push his car out.
- 6:52And then I was like, no, I'm not going through.
- 6:53That Said, I'm like, don't you turn?
- 6:55And eventually made my way to the gym.
- 6:58So you pull, you pulled over and you were in there, Uncle Dave
- 7:01helping him out. Yeah.
- 7:04This is on the way to do your session.
- 7:07This is like 5:45 in the morning.
- 7:09Oh my God. Yeah, not idea.
- 7:12What are people in work thinking about the fact that you're up at
- 7:165:00 AM? Because like, that's pretty
- 7:18normal in Australia with the early morning culture and stuff,
- 7:21but not so much UK and Ireland, is it?
- 7:23Like they wouldn't go off 5. And when he got going I felt
- 7:28good, my ankle felt good. It was really weird.
- 7:31So I ended up doing the first 15 minutes.
- 7:35I don't trust this treadmill by the way, just putting out there
- 7:37the 1st 15 minutes at three O 5 and the 2nd 15 at like 3 minute
- 7:42kilometer pace and yeah, felt good.
- 7:45Cooled down then and then came back to the gym that evening and
- 7:50done 6 by 5 minute reps of one minute recovery.
- 7:56So similar again around that three minute kilometer pace,
- 7:59maybe dipped into like the 258 or something like that.
- 8:02But again, ankle felt perfect. It's like that day I think I
- 8:05nearly covered like 32 kilometers and the ankle felt
- 8:09really good, Which is really weird because on Monday I was
- 8:11nearly pulling the pin on my like indoor season and I was
- 8:13like, no, it's not worth it. Wednesday I went to the gym
- 8:19again, done 30 minutes on the elliptical, and then I hopped
- 8:22across the treadmill and I done 45 minutes on the treadmill.
- 8:27And then that evening, I'd done my circus class.
- 8:30On that like day after the double session days, now is your
- 8:34body like kind of fully adjusted to that?
- 8:36You don't feel like wiped out. Obviously you're tired, but not.
- 8:40Not totally wiped out. And if I, if I am a tiny bit
- 8:43sore, let me just hop on the elliptical.
- 8:44Like it's pretty much the same like purpose of like if I'm
- 8:49jogging, I'm going to be jogging like relatively easy anyway.
- 8:51So it's basically just get the heart off to around 1:30 or
- 8:54something like that and I get the same sort of stimulus.
- 8:56Just keep like sticking over really.
- 8:58Then on Thursday, Oh yeah, Thursday had an absolute
- 9:03nightmare. So again, went to the treadmill,
- 9:07it, the session was like 75 minutes, but the first 55 was
- 9:11easy and then a 20 minute pickup at the end and umm, yeah, from
- 9:16the 1st 55 on the treadmill. And I'd literally done every
- 9:19single run this week on the treadmill.
- 9:21So like, oh, I want to get outside and run outside.
- 9:25And I sort of when I was on the treadmill, I was on Google Maps
- 9:28and I sort of like measured out a loop that looked pretty good.
- 9:30It was like 3.2 kilometers around the gym.
- 9:33And I was like, yeah, perfect. Got outside and I swear the road
- 9:38leading it's just like a big like 1 kilometer strip the road
- 9:42until you turn and it's genuine like a wind tunnel.
- 9:45It's running into the biggest ugliest headwind I've ever
- 9:49experienced. I was like fuck so anyway.
- 9:52Didn't realize that before you stepped out.
- 9:55No, because I only ever like, get out of the car and I'm like
- 9:57straight into the gym. Whereas you've gone the road.
- 9:59It's actually just like, it's like a wind tunnel.
- 10:00Yeah, it's crazy. And so yeah, anyway, I kept on
- 10:05going, made a turn and didn't have like 4 flights of stairs to
- 10:09jump down. So pause the watch because it
- 10:12was, it was still a little bit wet and slippy.
- 10:14So pause the watch, plotted down the stairs, took another left
- 10:18because it's like a square and got going again, wind in the
- 10:22face this time, uphill as well, up a big mass of hell.
- 10:26I was like I couldn't not have actually picked the worst route
- 10:29if I tried so. Probably right up there because
- 10:32you're like fumin anyway. Yeah, I was angry.
- 10:35Actually. No, it wasn't that bad.
- 10:36It was a sort of annoying. I couldn't get it up either.
- 10:39It was weird because I had to stop going down the stairs and
- 10:42yeah, it was just a disaster. And I don't know, I kept on
- 10:46turning, I kept on getting a headwind, so whatever.
- 10:50Yeah, just not good. So anyway, I don't know,
- 10:52outside, I think I average like 318 for like the 20 minutes.
- 10:56So just literally take the box, get it done.
- 11:00And that was Thursday. Then Thursday evening I do on a
- 11:04little gym session, just sort of like a heavier left squats, dead
- 11:08lifts and all that sort of shit. And Friday was like a pre race.
- 11:12So just a 20 minute jog down to like a gravel track, which is
- 11:16like close enough to my house. And and then I just don't 3 by
- 11:19200 meters. And I was just trying to roll
- 11:21these around like 30 ones 30s and just to try and get the legs
- 11:26like moving. And then, yeah, came to come to
- 11:30Saturday and so. How's that like little shakeout
- 11:36session feeling? You feeling pretty light and
- 11:38springy or? No not too light and springy to
- 11:40be honest. Like I'm like damn, paces feel
- 11:43hard just for 200 meters, never mind like trying to hold that
- 11:47for like like 4 minutes. So yeah, it didn't feel great,
- 11:53but sort of expect like sometimes you feel really good
- 11:54before I sometimes you feel like shit like so you can't really
- 11:57read too much into it and. That's basically a full training
- 12:02week up until that point now maybe like a little bit reduced.
- 12:06No it's it's a full training week.
- 12:08Sure so you don't like send 5 minutes on Thursday gym?
- 12:11Like if I was leading to a race, I'll probably wouldn't even do
- 12:14gym on the Thursday and Friday. I normally have it off so but I
- 12:18always do a shake out the day before a race.
- 12:21So yeah, it's probably more than what I normally would.
- 12:28But yeah. So Saturday took me like where
- 12:31the race was on. It was like an hour and a half
- 12:33away. So get up pretty early, take the
- 12:36Namio shot, get some food into me and then hit the road.
- 12:41And then because you take the bicarb 2 hours outside the race
- 12:45at the pool and the side of motorway, take my bike have keep
- 12:48on going. Yeah, get it into arena and I'm
- 12:53just doing my little warm up. So I just done a 10 minute jog
- 12:56and then I don't to by like 90 seconds a threshold and just to
- 13:01get like the blood going put like the legs pumping off 62nd
- 13:05jog are. You allowed to go on the track
- 13:07to do any of this. No.
- 13:09So there's like an outdoor track beside the indoor arena.
- 13:12So I don't all of that stuff on the outdoor track.
- 13:16And then yeah, just a few strides and then, yeah, got in
- 13:22and let Rep. So like there's it's sort of
- 13:26this is sort of good practice for like nationals as well
- 13:28because it's like a call room. And like you might think a call
- 13:31room is much, but it's sort of like does throw everything a
- 13:35little bit off because you have to be in the call room a certain
- 13:37amount of time before the start. So you serve to plan your warm
- 13:40up around that as well. And then just sitting in the
- 13:43call room with the other lads like it's yeah, it's sort of
- 13:46good to get good thing to get used to.
- 13:48And you know who who the rest of the field are at this point,
- 13:51Like familiar faces and names or not.
- 13:54I knew one or two of the lads but I didn't know any other.
- 14:00I only knew 1 the lads. Aaron because I would have went
- 14:02to college with him and he was there.
- 14:05So other than that, yeah I didn't really know anyone.
- 14:08Didn't know what to expect but yeah.
- 14:11So started the race. The person I go to get massage
- 14:15off David, he used to be a 1500m runner back in the day and he's
- 14:19like just get out hard, especially indoor track.
- 14:22It's so hard to pass. Just get out hard and hold your
- 14:23position. So that's what I know.
- 14:25And I got out and there's only one loud ahead of me and yeah,
- 14:29just sitting in second for like the first 7 laps, 1500 meters, 7
- 14:34laps of the indoor track. So for the first like 4, I was,
- 14:37we're just taking off 64 second laps.
- 14:40Then I was feeling good. So going into like the third
- 14:43last lap, I, I pushed it and your man went with me and yeah,
- 14:51super, super tight. Sprint, what was your what was
- 14:53your case split do you know? Haven't like you, I didn't get
- 14:57any. Splits or anything, no.
- 14:58There was definitely 60 fours for the 1st 900 meters and then
- 15:06we would have picked it up again.
- 15:07So I'm terrible, I'm not, so I'm going to try and add that up.
- 15:13So yeah, my first ever like Sprint finish dip for the line
- 15:18and it was to go on by .04 of a second him, but we take that
- 15:22yeah, 356 now. It's pretty demoralizing when
- 15:26you see like milers in America who have to run an extra 109
- 15:30meters and they're running faster than that.
- 15:32But no, it was good for my very first one and yeah, it was
- 15:35really, really fun. Like I plan to do 1 outdoors now
- 15:39at the start of May. That's sort of on my race IT
- 15:42list. So yeah, be super excited
- 15:45because I think outdoors might be.
- 15:47Do people say outdoors is faster?
- 15:49I don't really know. Depends on the weather as well.
- 15:52And but yeah, no, really, really enjoyed it.
- 15:55And like, it got me thinking like why?
- 15:57Yeah. Why do people run marathons that
- 16:00are like 3-4 hours of running? And like you have to do so much
- 16:03training when you can just like, let RIP on an indoor track.
- 16:07It's way more fun. Than they do one every six
- 16:09months or something. Yeah, it's so much fun.
- 16:13Well, Congrats on the win was I did see because you put is it
- 16:17your rail or someone else's rail where you can see the finish on
- 16:20it? That's that was my coaches
- 16:22recording on its own. So, and you can see that you
- 16:26depth for the line and so did the other guy as well, to be
- 16:29fair, didn't he? Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 16:31I think he's an 800 meter guy. He's around like 148 for 800
- 16:34now. I don't watch APS in, but yeah,
- 16:37so he, he's got a kick. So I literally just stuck the
- 16:41arm out and done everything I got.
- 16:43Yeah. Because like that form goes out
- 16:45the window when you're running down the home straight.
- 16:47You're literally just like pumping and trying to do
- 16:49whatever you can to get across the line.
- 16:52So the dip was conscientious as well, like you were deliberately
- 16:55put your head down. Yeah, that probably shows that.
- 17:01I mean obviously you're on the red line, but you clearly like
- 17:04judge your effort well because if you completely blown out, so
- 17:08you're like leaning back and just dying over the line on you
- 17:11couldn't even lean forward anyway.
- 17:13Yeah, probably have. So I did have a good experience
- 17:15in the race. So like I could run another one
- 17:17and I could pop what like 400 to go and I might have it
- 17:20definitely will have a totally different experience.
- 17:22So it's probably because I like time to perfection.
- 17:25Like it probably couldn't went any better really.
- 17:27Yeah, 356 is fast though. I know you compare yourself to
- 17:31people internationally which fair enough but don't take
- 17:34anything away from it. First first attempt and
- 17:38destroying that sub 4 barrier which like a lot of sub subelate
- 17:42people get caught up on for a while don't they?
- 17:45Yeah, and I was looking at on the World Athletics profile.
- 17:48So if it's a world of like surfer race or whatever, you get
- 17:54H like race result is given a certain amount of points.
- 17:58So I think that 356-1500 is worth more than a 1430 than
- 18:06MY1435K, which is which I thought on my head is crazy
- 18:10because I thought a 1430 would be more impressive than a 356.
- 18:14But yeah, so whatever way they grade these races.
- 18:17Yeah, well, exactly. That shows you how how good of a
- 18:20run it is because we sometimes we use these World Athletics
- 18:24points conversions to like make sense of professionals results,
- 18:28like if they run a 3K and they're a 5K guy or whatever.
- 18:32And we trust it in that sense. So we should trust it for you as
- 18:36well. It's a good sign.
- 18:37Yeah, it might be in the wrong event and I have to drop down.
- 18:40Do an 800 now and see what happens.
- 18:43Guys in armour watch out for the the finishing kick.
- 18:49But a 1500 meters isn't really enough like stimulus for today.
- 18:52So I got out and done like my second warm up and I had a
- 18:57little session then. I don't M4 by 6 minutes off 90
- 19:02seconds break. So yeah, tried to do these as
- 19:08controlled as possible and yeah, I felt good for pretty good
- 19:13doing them and just added more mileage for the day and then I
- 19:17cooled down eventually just on 10 minute cool down because I
- 19:21was a bit tired. They would have felt like jokes
- 19:24in comparison to the speed you were running an hour or so
- 19:26prior. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:29But again, it's, I don't know, outdoors it was a bit windy and
- 19:31all that sort of shit. You don't feel that great.
- 19:34But like, yeah, adrenaline sort of got me through it.
- 19:37I felt like my heart rate was pretty good as well.
- 19:38So yeah, it wasn't too bad. What was it like LT1 intensity
- 19:44or like tempo? Sort of LT1, yeah, I sort of, I
- 19:47sort of had to pull it back a little bit just to stay on the
- 19:50safe side. So I think I was hitting like
- 19:53three O 5 for the 1st 2 reps and I probably was maybe pushing a
- 19:58little bit. So we pulled it right back to
- 20:01like three 20s or something because realistically it's going
- 20:04to do me no good whatsoever. Like I probably could have held
- 20:07in our three or fives for the whole thing, but I'm just going
- 20:09to dig myself like she want to affect the recovery.
- 20:11So there was no point whatsoever and like keep pushing it.
- 20:15And yeah, don't mention on the cool down.
- 20:19Then that evening I got out for a 40 minute jog.
- 20:23I ran 8.8 K and 4:30 ones. And I actually wore the Nike
- 20:31Romero Plus for the first time. Very, very nice shoe.
- 20:36Nice Poppy. Yeah, like it.
- 20:39I like it a lot. What colorway did you get?
- 20:41Oh. I got this.
- 20:42Like it's like a Navy with a green through it and then it's
- 20:46like a Whitey sole. It's like your own eyes.
- 20:48Oh yeah, seeing them, they're nice.
- 20:52And then, yeah, that was. Saturday, by the way, are you on
- 20:55board with it being colorway, not color wave or is it color
- 20:59wave? I say colorway.
- 21:02Yeah, same, but I've had both. Really.
- 21:05Color wave. Very rogue.
- 21:10Also is that is that you rate your race warm up, warm up, race
- 21:16cool down, warm up post race session, cool down double in the
- 21:21evening. So I done a warm up race and
- 21:25then I didn't cool down. I don't like sort of another
- 21:28warm up session, cool down and then run again in the evening.
- 21:32Yeah. What was the total volume that
- 21:36day? Oh, actually it wasn't that big.
- 21:39I thought. I think it was like high 2026 to
- 21:4227 kilometers actually wasn't that big.
- 21:44You'd think it would be bigger, but no, it wasn't that big
- 21:47because the warm up and cool lens are only like 2K.
- 21:49It's only 10 minutes. I didn't really do the 15
- 21:51minutes. But yeah, it was the intensity
- 21:54for that race. Like again, shocked the body.
- 21:58And then Sunday I was meant to do 90 minutes were like after 70
- 22:03do a pickup. But my legs, like my calves are
- 22:08super tight after the race. So I said look, there's no point
- 22:13again. So I just done 90 minutes
- 22:14actually met up where Cormac Dalton, who we said we get
- 22:18Michelle on YouTube Diaries, ran with him and felt Marin, a few
- 22:20other lads operand Phoenix back. So 90 minutes up there with them
- 22:25boys. 21K4 seventeens for 128K for the week.
- 22:32So yeah, one more week. This week will be more like 5K
- 22:36specific paces and then yeah, roll the dice in our man.
- 22:41On rail, we shouldn't underestimate the race win as
- 22:44well. By the way, not not many people
- 22:45win races. Yeah, I was thinking like when
- 22:49you get to like, like them pros, I said like to Callum Elson and
- 22:52all them lads, like they actually rarely actually win a
- 22:55race anymore because they're in such the elite fields.
- 22:58So yeah, no, I shouldn't really take it for granted.
- 23:01It was good. Was there any any celebratory
- 23:04food afterwards? No, I went to after the race.
- 23:12So another girl I trained with Sarah, she was running at like
- 23:162:00. So my race was earlier than
- 23:18hers. So me and Aiden, we went to get
- 23:21a sandwich and coffee in this just a little coffee place after
- 23:25the after my race. But I got this like Taco chicken
- 23:30sandwich and it was like on on a sourdough bread.
- 23:36But I don't know if you ever got this like when you eat the
- 23:37bread, it's sort of like cuts the roof of your mouth or like
- 23:40it. I know I was trying to fit too
- 23:43much in my mouth basically. And I probably should because it
- 23:46gave you the option to do like sandwich wrap or something else.
- 23:50I probably wouldn't bear on a wrap, a sort of rage.
- 23:53And I didn't get the wrap and said the sandwich.
- 23:55But I know it was nice. It was nice.
- 23:56It was a bit. It was a bit.
- 23:58Yeah, it was good. Yeah, especially if it's like a
- 24:00little bit toasted. It was rock hard.
- 24:03Yeah, yeah. And so, yeah, approach, it got
- 24:06rapid. No, it was good.
- 24:07It was nice. Yeah, could be 128 K.
- 24:10So then now you is armor next weekend coming or two weeks?
- 24:15So it's actually a Thursday night.
- 24:17So it's not this Thursday coming, it's the following
- 24:19Thursday under lights. Shit.
- 24:22So that makes the taper process a little bit more complicated
- 24:26than usual because it's not your Monday to Sunday or Monday to
- 24:28Saturday week. No, yeah, it's different.
- 24:30So I'm sort of like on a different cycle now for the next
- 24:32couple of days. But yeah, my coach pass sort all
- 24:36that out. I just do what he tells me to
- 24:38do. But Cormac Dolphin is going to
- 24:40be doing him arm as well. So it's a stacked field again,
- 24:44Nick. Greg's should be doing it, I
- 24:47think. So assessments down to do it.
- 24:48So yeah, a few big guns there. So hang on the back.
- 24:54I think one of my club mates from Wallasey is got heading
- 24:57over as well or think he was planned to.
- 25:00Was it Joe? No.
- 25:02Yeah, Joe Bowden. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:04I was talking to Joe. He's actually telling me a few
- 25:06stories about you. Was he?
- 25:08I said I'd keep there. Badmouth and meal.
- 25:11Bit of what's his name? Dennis Rodman sort of attitude
- 25:14and urine that's. What he used to say, yeah,
- 25:19because I, because I turned up to this race once, like after
- 25:23getting in at 4:00 AM the night before and was like genuinely
- 25:27still a little bit tipsy on the start line.
- 25:30Yeah, he was saying that something's never changed.
- 25:34Except you're not just tipsy this time, you just rock up
- 25:35late. And sometimes it works.
- 25:37Somehow it works. No, just don't rock up.
- 25:41We've Rick. Somehow we've regressed from
- 25:43rocking up drunk. Ladies and gentlemen, Dean
- 25:45Menzies has joined the podcast to bring us back in line.
- 25:50You've just missed out on Owen's race.
- 25:52Sorry I'm late. Yeah, good.
- 25:54Good to have you. I upset I missed it.
- 26:00I I'll have to listen to it back but I understand it was over
- 26:05before you knew it. Hey.
- 26:07You, man, it was over quick. Like especially on like, you
- 26:12think the indoor causes 7 laps, you think it might drag, but
- 26:15it's over so, so quick. So I can only imagine, like on
- 26:18an outdoor track, you'd already have three and three quarter
- 26:19laps. But yeah, I can see how people
- 26:23love the event. It was really, really fun.
- 26:25That's cool. Right, where do we go now?
- 26:28I'll give a quick recap one server of my training whilst
- 26:31we're here and then we can get into the results.
- 26:35So I, I actually had believe it or not, my, because I use chorus
- 26:40and track it through the, the app is very good from like a
- 26:45user interface point of view in the data because I have the
- 26:47chorus heart rate monitor as well.
- 26:50And it track, I track my training load through the, the
- 26:55measure that they provide. And at the end of the week I was
- 26:57like, shit, that's actually quite a big week.
- 26:59So I was riding pretty much every day and ran every other
- 27:04day on four days how it fell and look back as my highest training
- 27:09load ever. Somehow it Trump's MY140K weeks
- 27:17from last year, which it's all accurate.
- 27:19Likes it's based off heart rate and time spent at heart rate.
- 27:23So I mean it goes to show that the the bike is getting some
- 27:26good intensity in there, so. That would make sense because
- 27:30what's your total active hours? Yeah, I think it was like 14,
- 27:36about 350K on the bike and then, I don't know, 35K running or
- 27:40something. Yeah, Ben Felton has gone mad
- 27:43and like adding that cycle and cross training into his into his
- 27:50training. He's actually, this could
- 27:52probably be you 2 Diaries. He's got a nice little series
- 27:55going. He's racing in Rotterdam, the
- 27:58marathon there. Before that he's doing Barcelona
- 28:01half in two weeks. So he's currently out in Spain
- 28:04where his coach, that Swedish guy Victor Schmags, he has that
- 28:09weird moustache. Yeah, he's out on shrine camp
- 28:13with him. So he's going to be posting
- 28:15weekly on his build up and he had a shot.
- 28:17He tried to get under 30 there in a race in Newcastle
- 28:21previously and he got like 30 O 6, so super, super fair.
- 28:25And I think his aim for Rotterdam, he's going to try and
- 28:28get under 220. So it'd be interesting to see
- 28:31how he goes. But he used to do like one 6170
- 28:34kilometers a week and now he just sits at 1:20 and then
- 28:37cycles like for three hours. So yeah, it's just free fitness.
- 28:44Even Jonathan Gould, I don't know if you had the interviewed
- 28:47Grant Fisher the other week and he was asking Fisher about the
- 28:50time he spent on the bike whilst he was injured.
- 28:52I mean, to be fair, Fisher does say like largely it was because
- 28:56of my injury and just to help with like decrease the load on
- 28:59my body. Both like, the best thing to get
- 29:04better at running is to run. That's what Fisher says.
- 29:07But yeah, goals highlighted the fact that like Keely Hodgkinson,
- 29:12Georgia Hunter Bell, Carl Hawker, like so many people,
- 29:15middle distance and distance people now are integrating the
- 29:18bike. So it does seem to be a bit of a
- 29:20theme. But yeah, specifically, I don't
- 29:24know, workout with the front runner triathlon lot on Thursday
- 29:27morning, which was good fun. Cardiac Hill, I don't know how
- 29:31long are the wraps up there? 3 minutes or so?
- 29:33Well, depends how good you are at cycling I guess.
- 29:36I'd say about 3 minutes, yeah, because were you doing the 45
- 29:40seconds on, 15 seconds off? No, I was just clinging on to
- 29:45Ali. The whole hill on, essentially.
- 29:53I think we got about 3, give or take, you know, three of those
- 29:57intervals, yeah. Yeah, OK, so that was a good
- 30:02morning. And then Saturday morning was
- 30:04like the grief long rides as well.
- 30:05I can't believe I'm recapping A cycling weekend, but that was
- 30:11fun. Got I feel like need to add a
- 30:13bit of colour to the the context of these rides.
- 30:17So like you, you rock up to a random cycling shop in a random
- 30:21suburb essentially, which looks like it just does cycling
- 30:25repairs and stuff. Like one of those shops.
- 30:27As a runner, you'd go past and pay 0 attention to little small
- 30:32one unit plot in the middle of nowhere with like some bikes in
- 30:35the window. And then all of a sudden at 6:00
- 30:37AM on a Saturday morning, there's about 30 to 40
- 30:40middle-aged fellas and a couple of women hanging hanging around
- 30:44outside of it. In Lycra.
- 30:47In Lycra. Yeah, all all the bikes worth
- 30:51about 10 grand. Their full outfits probably
- 30:54worth close to $1000, and they're all trying to see who's
- 30:58having the biggest midlife crisis.
- 31:02And then now they've got these injured runners just rolling up
- 31:06to the back of them and not really behaving, behaving
- 31:09appropriately. It was good fun because shit,
- 31:14for about 45 minutes I felt like I was redline and like clinging
- 31:19on and what it's like that intense that I'm not even
- 31:22looking at my watch. I'm just trying as hard as I
- 31:24can. And then I've eventually gave
- 31:26up, realized I'd been dropped and the pack had been blown
- 31:30apart. So whilst I was collecting my
- 31:36ego up off the floor and like plodding on, I then started to
- 31:40pick up another person, another person.
- 31:43And it was like a war zone. Everyone had just been
- 31:46disintegrated across all over Perth.
- 31:49So then eventually we ended up forming a chase pack.
- 31:53There's about eight of us and then we all started to roll the
- 31:57front through this chase pack and we ended up reattaching.
- 32:00So it was actually the moral of the story is never give up.
- 32:06Did you actually get back on? Yeah, and we must have got lucky
- 32:09with a few red lights or something, but we did get back
- 32:11on. Oh.
- 32:12That's Brill. Still there or did he have his
- 32:16run in at that point? Or was that still to come?
- 32:19Yes, I think your friend Andrew, he was the culprit for blowing
- 32:23the pack apart because me and him were spending most of the
- 32:26time at the back towards the start of this ride.
- 32:30And then there's there's a certain guy who rides like quite
- 32:34aggressively perhaps like sharp pulls in and out.
- 32:38Like sometimes when you overtake someone and then you come across
- 32:43in front of them, you obviously make sure there's plenty of room
- 32:45between yours and theirs tire so as to not cause an accident.
- 32:49But this guy seems to be a little bit unaware of his
- 32:52surroundings and he just takes a gamble or forces the person
- 32:56behind to like quickly get on the brakes.
- 32:59So we've done that anyway. Yourself.
- 33:02I've lived and learned now. So he'd done that to this guy
- 33:10and like put this fellow in the Gus.
- 33:12So basically, you know, like one of those little drain dips.
- 33:15So like he proper like slammed into that and Andrew, see, I
- 33:19think everyone who was behind seeing it and Andrew
- 33:22specifically then rode alongside the guy who kind of caused the
- 33:26trouble. And I don't know what he said,
- 33:28but I think he was just being like, what the hell, You've just
- 33:31almost like threw him off his bike and the guy guy told him to
- 33:36do 1 and said I'll deck. Yeah, Andrew got pissed off and
- 33:43went from the back of the pack to the front of the pack like a
- 33:46massive search. So then you know how it is,
- 33:48There's about 30 people, everyone's responding to each
- 33:51other. And then 5 minutes later
- 33:54everyone's found the limits of the the fitness and they're all
- 33:57everywhere. He did comment on the Strava.
- 34:00When I tried to tag him and blame him, he said I was just
- 34:03closing gaps and I said yeah, from the very back of the pack
- 34:06to the very front of the pack. You have stuck his fire a few
- 34:11Times Now. Either that or I've
- 34:15misinterpreted it and he was just trying to punish me, which
- 34:17if that was the case he did, did so punish me.
- 34:20There could be a full like. That one a couple of months ago.
- 34:23There could be a full, like, Netflix series on like, cycling
- 34:26groups. I feel like there's so much
- 34:28politics. So there's so much like carnage
- 34:30in it. There's so much like, I don't
- 34:32know. Yeah, I think we so funny.
- 34:35Like ego, it's a whole underground world, so.
- 34:38Much I got. Like more than running I think.
- 34:43Well after, after coffee afterwards, like in running, the
- 34:47most expensive thing you buy is a pair of super shoes for what
- 34:50like 3 or 400 dollars, £200, whatever it might be.
- 34:54And then after coffee afterwards, everyone sat there
- 34:56and they've got like these 10 gram bikes and there's there's
- 34:59about 30 or 40 of them just lying round.
- 35:02And someone made the point the other week, like, there's
- 35:05probably about $200,000 worth of KISS just like sat outside this
- 35:10coffee shop on a random Saturday morning and it's like, you can
- 35:15spend as much as you want. That's, that's the mad thing.
- 35:18But yeah, good training week. Sunday, I rode again and ran
- 35:22again. This time, perhaps stupidly, I
- 35:25ran in the midday heat because I can't really do any intensity
- 35:31with the runs in terms of like picking up the pace.
- 35:34So I was like, oh, I might as well just run in the heat and
- 35:36get my heart rate up that way. And it did work.
- 35:39It was, I was running like 430 fives.
- 35:42Every time I looked it was like 150.
- 35:43I was like, yeah, this is good. Did you mention to our when the
- 35:50hate that we're in at the minutes probably what touching
- 35:5240° the last couple of days? Yeah, I haven't actually rubbed
- 35:56his nose in it yet, but. I heard, I heard it's like
- 36:00carnage, True. All of Australia.
- 36:01It's like really, really warm. Is it?
- 36:03So the East Coast has copped the most of it.
- 36:07Like in terms of continuous days of hate.
- 36:09We've had it pretty, we've had it not too bad.
- 36:11But yeah, it's hit us a bit now. Yeah, last night I went for a
- 36:15walk, would have been close to 9 PM, 33°, just like what is going
- 36:20on. At 9:00 PM, boys, you need to
- 36:23ship some of that heat over here to us.
- 36:26Oh, like, it's just so sad over here at the moment.
- 36:29Like, I actually missed Australia for the first time.
- 36:32I was talking to Cormac Dalton on the long run and he was
- 36:36saying in my running career, this is the last time I'm
- 36:41spending a January in Ireland. It's just hard to comprehend how
- 36:46shit it is. It's dark, it's wet, it's cold.
- 36:51Like it's just, yeah, it's super, super shit.
- 36:56You don't realize how lucky you have it.
- 37:00And I didn't think, I didn't think we that bad come back.
- 37:02I'm like, oh, it's just a bit of rain.
- 37:04Like it's grand. It's not grand.
- 37:07It's really, really shit. And it's not fun.
- 37:09Like I just reminisce about that coastal run I used to do every
- 37:14morning along M Scarborough. Like I missed that place so
- 37:19much. Yeah, on your Friday when you
- 37:24when you used to bake, bake some bread, wander down, get a sauna.
- 37:29Literally meeting any Kennedy. Yeah, how times has changed.
- 37:38Yeah, because I guess at first it probably feels like a bit of
- 37:40a novelty going home and getting layered up to go for a run
- 37:43probably feels like quite cool and stuff.
- 37:46Until you go to get layered up and all your warm clothes are in
- 37:50the wash because they're wet or dirty.
- 37:52And yeah, if you take it for granted, you really do.
- 37:58And guys, to celebrate our 50th episode, something we never
- 38:03thought we'd get, we are going to give away.
- 38:07We got a little giveaway of you might have seen the singlets on
- 38:10the Instagram. We will be giving away one of
- 38:13those and some Bix gels to a very, very lucky listener.
- 38:18And I haven't felt the singlets yet, but we have.
- 38:22We might have compared them to another brand and they are the
- 38:27material is it's just impeccable guys.
- 38:32They're top, top quality. So yeah, 1 lucky person is going
- 38:38to get the chance to get one of them saying let's add some Bix
- 38:41gels courtesy of Bix and these little podcasts.
- 38:44So we'll put Instagram post up about that.
- 38:48And yeah, guys, we're excited to get just wearing some easy
- 38:52double singlets. I reckon next year once we get
- 38:55them out we'll have like a an easy double Hall of Fame or
- 38:59something and if anyone runs a PB whilst wearing the singlet
- 39:03you go straight into the Hall of Fame.
- 39:05That's cool. That's good, yeah.
- 39:09And what Owen's saying genuinely isn't marks in material.
- 39:12Like doesn't really matter if we sell these or if we don't
- 39:15because we're doing them at like cost price anyway.
- 39:17That's the good thing about it. They're so cheap and so
- 39:20accessible given what this bloody material is.
- 39:23Thanks. Thanks for giving us your race
- 39:24recap, Owen. And now he's very busy, man.
- 39:27One of the people who's going to have to dip out.
- 39:30Yeah, unfortunately my sister has a a very big foot game of
- 39:34football and I have to support her and I'm currently working so
- 39:39I'm better not tell my boss. But yeah, I'm going after dip
- 39:43boys, unfortunately. All right, I'll sign it off.
- 39:47See you next week. Charges next week.
- 39:48Good luck. See you mate, bye.
- 39:50Well, probably important to say as well that training week was
- 39:53brought to you by Gnomeo. That should give us hopefully
- 39:56some access to some of the athletes and bring you some more
- 39:58cool conversations around high performance and.
- 40:01How they're fueling that through through Gnomeo and how they're
- 40:04training So hopefully an exciting year ahead for both
- 40:07those Gnomeo and their athletes. Right then results I'm going to
- 40:12start chronologically because I think this one happened first
- 40:16maybe on Friday night. So there's a meet, I think it's
- 40:19Boston, this John Terrier meet and Sam Ruth, the New Zealand 16
- 40:26year old delivered and absolutely obscene run.
- 40:30I don't know if I think you've seen it because you sent the
- 40:33sent the stream through. So he's he's born from the front
- 40:37in 348.8 Ace from Peter Sisk, who was actually involved in one
- 40:42of those meets last week. I think he might have finished
- 40:44ahead of Jake Whiteman. He did, and I didn't know his
- 40:48name at the time, like I wasn't familiar with his name.
- 40:52But then when you went through the results, because that was
- 40:56the 2K race, wasn't it? And was it Hobbs, Kessler, then
- 41:02Grant Fisher, then Fisk and then Whiteman?
- 41:06And so then you, who's this person from Belgium beating, you
- 41:10know, the guy that's just finished second at the, at the
- 41:15world champs of the 1500. So you, you knew his name from
- 41:18there. So then to see him in front or,
- 41:21you know, in that mile race sort of elevated the profile of that
- 41:25mile, didn't it? Yeah, absolutely.
- 41:28And to be fair, I said he's one from the front.
- 41:30It wasn't from the front. He was, he was towards the front
- 41:33of the race the whole time, but he didn't pass the the guy piece
- 41:37sisk until quite late up there, maybe 300 meters or so to go or
- 41:42200 to go. I don't know if you've seen the
- 41:45video his is it like his brother or his dad put up initially from
- 41:49the stands? It's possibly his dad, so
- 41:52because his dad was interviewed post race as well.
- 41:55And it was a really interesting 10 minute chat because he's
- 42:00trying to process what his 16 year old son like.
- 42:03His son's still a kid really. And he's trying to work out like
- 42:09what's just happened? Where did that come from?
- 42:12What's next? Really cool 10 minute chat
- 42:16because, yeah, just as a parent trying to do the right thing by
- 42:19him and he's quite an accomplished runner himself, the
- 42:21father and then realizing because I think New Zealand have
- 42:26a rich history in the 1500 meter in the mile.
- 42:30Like John Walker, I think was an Olympic gold medalist and was
- 42:36the first person to go sub 350 for the mile.
- 42:40And so then and this 16 year old boy is just, you know, gone past
- 42:44all of these New Zealand greats in one fast way.
- 42:46It was pretty, pretty phenomenal.
- 42:50Yeah, on you can hear him as well.
- 42:52He's not commentating on the race for the purposes of the
- 42:54video, but he's just speaking because he's like he's so
- 42:58obviously passionate about it and he's like almost given
- 43:01instructions under under his breath, like go Sam, like and
- 43:05he's talking about the splits, what he needs to go for 800 in
- 43:08and stuff. And it's clear because I've seen
- 43:11a a pre race interview of that Sam Ruth and he's talking about
- 43:15trying to run 353 initially was the the target because I think
- 43:19he said that would be, although he's a Kiwi, that would be
- 43:24faster than any US high schooler ever.
- 43:27So he was like using that as a bit of a mini goal for him and
- 43:30his training partner and countryman.
- 43:33Santana seems to be almost like his his mentor, if you like is
- 43:38was going for the he had his eyes on the New Zealand record.
- 43:41And then I think in the races ended up pulling up with he got
- 43:45clipped or something. So he didn't end up finishing.
- 43:48Yeah, I think he might have heard his Achilles that they
- 43:50both travelled over on from. So last weekend, I don't know if
- 43:54we mentioned, but Sam Tanner and Sam Ruth ran I think 353 for the
- 44:00mile in New Zealand and then headed out midweek to the US,
- 44:04got into the US Wednesday night. And then this was meant to be
- 44:08for them a bit of a rust Buster race was how it was described.
- 44:14And yeah, they sort of had ABC goals.
- 44:18This is what Ben, his dad was saying.
- 44:21And that they I think 353 was maybe middle of the middle of
- 44:27the range. I think 348 was what was maybe
- 44:32thought to be absolutely like potentially possible.
- 44:36But I think his dad was trying to give caution that like 350 is
- 44:39just such a magical mark like and seconds.
- 44:42You don't just appeal lots of seconds off over such a short
- 44:46distance and you've got to deal with all the jet lag and the
- 44:49travel. But yeah, somehow he he ran the
- 44:53time that he did. Yeah.
- 44:55So some of the stats behind it is it's the third fastest under
- 44:5920 indoor mile of all time. And the guy's only 16.
- 45:03So he's he's three years the junior of some of the other
- 45:06people in that list. It's an under 18 world record.
- 45:10Again, he's got two years on some of them.
- 45:13So it's quite hard to comprehend really.
- 45:16And like you see what kind of happened or happens with gout
- 45:23gout and like the kind of sensationalizing of his results
- 45:28and him as a person and stuff. And you would hate for that to
- 45:32kind of have a negative impact on this Sam, but he's he's
- 45:37literally performing at that top level already.
- 45:39Like this isn't he's not on a trajectory to anywhere because
- 45:44he's he's like, he's there. He's mixing it with the world's
- 45:47best. Yeah, so there was on that
- 45:51interview with Sam's dad, there's a comment underneath it
- 45:55in on YouTube and it says that just for for context, do you
- 46:02remember, is it Quincy Wilson, the young 400M phenom for the
- 46:07USA that went, I think you might have gone to the World
- 46:10Championships recently in their men's 4 by 400, but he ran as a
- 46:1516 year old in the 400 meters, 44.1 seconds, which gives a
- 46:23world athletic score of 12149 points.
- 46:26And then you remember the 16 year old last year in the 800
- 46:29meters. Is it Luton House he ran, so
- 46:35another American he ran 142.27 in the 800 and that that equates
- 46:43in terms of the ranking score of 12161 points, so a bit quicker
- 46:47than the 400. And then Sam Ruth's time indoor
- 46:51mile time of 34888 ranks is scores 12187 points, so higher
- 47:00than both of those performances. And if you were to correspond
- 47:03that to a 400 meters, it would be a 43.51 outdoor or a
- 47:09141.37800 outdoor. So like.
- 47:14Close to world record in both of those.
- 47:16Yeah. And so I think the indoor, I
- 47:19think look and it makes me now question a little bit, how does
- 47:24the does the ranking point system key off whatever the
- 47:27world record is? And so you get points as to how
- 47:29close you are to that. And so maybe the indoor outdoor
- 47:32don't quite correlate because some of these indoor times are
- 47:35just getting rewritten. But I think either way, pretty
- 47:41phenomenally good. I've seen something else to add
- 47:46even more insight to it as well and it says for context in in
- 47:512017 Inger Britson became the youngest ever sub form in at
- 47:55Mila and at the time he ran 358. So he's now 10 seconds faster
- 48:04than when Inger Britson done it in 2017.
- 48:07Yeah. Well, and I have to admit at
- 48:10that point in time, at that point in the weekend, so this
- 48:12was a Saturday meeting, wasn't it?
- 48:16I was thinking that was the peak result of the like the weekend
- 48:21it. Could have been ended the
- 48:23weekend and it would have been a good round of results to talk
- 48:27about. Yeah, you were sort of like this
- 48:29performance is, you know, a lot to digest in and of its own.
- 48:34And then there was some good racing still to come.
- 48:37So there was, I don't think I even touched on the fact that, I
- 48:40mean, obviously with all the, the world rankings that he's
- 48:44taken there, it's a national record for New Zealand as well,
- 48:47indoors and outdoors. So that goes back to 1982.
- 48:51The one thing he may be slightly salty about is that he didn't
- 48:54get the Area Oceania record because Cam still has that with
- 48:59the 347 and he he reminded us as such in in New York.
- 49:07So I don't know. Do you want to give a bit of an
- 49:09overview of Melrose? Yeah.
- 49:12I mean, look, I don't know to I know it's mentioned that it's
- 49:17what got 100. This was the 117th running of it
- 49:22was what I was what I saw. So I don't know the, this is bad
- 49:27background by me, but I don't know exactly how it's, it's come
- 49:31to be 117 years old, but certainly some of the one of the
- 49:37results we'll recap shortly, the mile results.
- 49:41They started going through like youngest ever winners of the
- 49:45mile. So the, the, the, the mile
- 49:47event, I think is one of the feature races of the mate.
- 49:51And when they're looking at youngest ever winners, a lot of
- 49:56the a lot of the names and their ages date back to the 50s and
- 49:5960s. So the, you know, it's pretty
- 50:04phenomenal to have a have a track mate with such history.
- 50:08Yeah, I think in terms of prestige as well in like the the
- 50:11running calendar year on year, it sits there as arguably the
- 50:16the most important indoor meet of the year given given its
- 50:20history, I guess. So it's held every February in
- 50:24New York City at a infamous track called the Armory.
- 50:29I think this time around there was a bit of chatter because the
- 50:32the weather outside was that bad, whether it would be
- 50:35implicating people like actually accessing the stadium and stuff
- 50:39and public transport. But I mean, obviously it's gone
- 50:42ahead. And in terms of like the the
- 50:45athlete selection in the field, I heard that it was it's put
- 50:49together by Ray Flynn, who's if you do a bit of Googling into
- 50:52him, he heads up one of the the agencies and has like half of
- 50:59the top talent globally right now, or so it would seem.
- 51:02Everyone's name who you see it just like, wow, wow, wow.
- 51:06So yeah, it's it's no wonder that they're able to put on such
- 51:09a show with all these athletes when he's he's heading it up
- 51:13using his network, which is good because you would imagine I
- 51:18tried to do some digging into like the prize money and stuff
- 51:21as well. But there's no, no information
- 51:23out there, which is fair enough. But yeah, you'd think there's
- 51:26even appearance fees and stuff being handed out for this one.
- 51:30So I think let's go through it chronologically, I think as to
- 51:33how it happened on the night. So the first one I seen was the
- 51:36women's 3000 and we did put a bit of a vote.
- 51:40Well, we put a preview post out on Instagram as to who we
- 51:43thought might win each of the races.
- 51:45And there was a bit of a vote on the story as well.
- 51:48So the the listeners and the followers could get involved in
- 51:50that just to make the recap a bit more fun.
- 51:53So Dean had Doris Lemon go away the is she still in college like
- 51:59the college fee norm or she just kind of coming out of that NCAA
- 52:02system? I thought she's out but she's
- 52:04like former collegiate has been in the US system for a while.
- 52:09Yeah, OK. I went with the British
- 52:12connection to Hannah. Not all actually tell.
- 52:15I did. I wouldn't have.
- 52:16Doris, you were just going to take that down, weren't you?
- 52:21I didn't think I did. And that's where I think you're
- 52:26right. I think we've done.
- 52:28I think I've done Doris and Dorcas and injustice here.
- 52:31I think Doris is still in college, right?
- 52:34Yeah, I. Think you're, I think.
- 52:37Cross country champs this year? Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 52:40So yeah, Dean had Lauren Ryan of Australia and the listeners the
- 52:45overall vote went to Jane had Ingrund the US sensation as
- 52:49well. So how the race results went was
- 52:52Doris Lemon goal. They won in 831, which is a
- 52:56world indoor standard. The qualifying time for that
- 52:58being 835 S comfortably inside that 2nd place was handing us
- 53:03all of GB in 832 again getting the qualifier.
- 53:07And 3rd was Jane Heddingren in 83498, another qualifier there.
- 53:13So what did you think of this one as it played out?
- 53:16Well, yeah, I mean, Doris just looks a bit too good, didn't
- 53:20she? Unfortunately, I was sort of
- 53:24rooting for, for, for for Lauren, but yeah, I don't know.
- 53:29She just I think we sort of picked the The Who the top
- 53:35runners were going to be. But yeah.
- 53:40And that Jane Hennegren has been And what is AUS collegiate
- 53:44athlete that's not too far out of high school.
- 53:47Yeah, she like freshman. Still think, isn't she?
- 53:50Yeah. A lot of talk around her too.
- 53:53So I thought it was a good, good run by her as well.
- 53:56And had enough thought to be fair.
- 53:57The only reason why I picked her is because I did look at some of
- 54:01their PBS and stuff versus the field and I think she'd run 838
- 54:06prior, maybe in 14395K. So it stacked up versus like the
- 54:12best in the race. Yeah, well, I think you're right
- 54:15and that's probably why I went with Lauren Ryan giving how some
- 54:17of the three KS are going. They like given how some of our
- 54:22middle distance girls are running and Lauren ran so well
- 54:25at Will Croft I thought maybe she'd be a bit closer.
- 54:29But hard to be fit over 10K and 3K all at the same time.
- 54:34Yeah, well, she she end up finishing back in fifth in
- 54:3784197. Shit guys, we've got a very
- 54:43special guest joining us impromptu.
- 54:47It's a name you might be familiar with and a voice you
- 54:51may also be familiar with. So welcome back to the show Owen
- 54:54Smith. I'm.
- 54:55Back. Your ears are probably burning
- 54:59because I just tried to claim the winner of the women's 3K as
- 55:02my own tip. I said let me go, didn't I?
- 55:06I did. Yeah, you did.
- 55:08She moves. Well, doesn't she?
- 55:09Yeah, so she's like college. Yeah, she's 23.
- 55:13I think she's in her coming off to our last years.
- 55:17Yeah, and but Hannah, not all want to run from her.
- 55:20That's probably the standard performance from there.
- 55:22Crazy. Yeah, it's funny, isn't it?
- 55:24Her form makes it look like she's working the hardest to
- 55:27stay up there but she just group grinds it.
- 55:30And but like, I think before last week, I think her PB was
- 55:34well off and then last week she ran 838 or something and now
- 55:38she's down to eight, 32831, which is, yeah, she's on one.
- 55:43She's with that New Balance Manchester group with Andrew.
- 55:46Oh yeah. Yes, so Congrats to all the
- 55:48listeners that voted for Doris there and followed Owens lead.
- 55:52Next up was the men's 800 meter where unfortunately the Irishman
- 55:56who we previewed last week who blitz the 600 meters came
- 55:59Mcphillips. He was a scratching and word was
- 56:02coming in from Owen the day before.
- 56:04Where did you see this, Owen? Just an inside source.
- 56:09I was just in the Irish circles, was it?
- 56:11Yeah, apparently it's something wrong with his tooth or
- 56:15something like that. It was, yeah, it was going to be
- 56:17very painful to to run on. So yeah, it's not worth it
- 56:21really. Your health is your wealth.
- 56:23That's it. Well, for this one I went with
- 56:26Mohammed Atui because I've seen a post saying he fancied the
- 56:30world records, the 800 meters indoor world record.
- 56:33So I was trying to be a bit sneaky there.
- 56:37Oh, and you went with Key and obviously he was scratching
- 56:39Dean, did you go with Brazier? No.
- 56:43I went with the guy that one. No.
- 56:47No, he did. No, I went with the two as well.
- 56:50I think I should get Colin because that's name is pretty
- 56:53similar to him so it's probably the closest.
- 56:58Yeah, but so this race was won by Colin Salman, US not high
- 57:04school at AUS Collegiate. He runs for Northern Arizona.
- 57:08He beat Mohamed the two in second of Spain and Ben
- 57:11Patterson of GB in 3rd. So Colin ran 144.7, which is
- 57:19just obscene. Like I had sometimes I don't
- 57:23know who the athletes are and they I should know who they are.
- 57:27But in this instance, I don't think anyone knew who he was
- 57:30besides people who follow the NCAA system.
- 57:34Yeah, he's ripping it up in the NCAA, but like, for him to be
- 57:38like the likes of Bryce Hoppel, Donovan Brazer, like I feel like
- 57:41the Americans hype Donovan Brazer and Bryce Hop so much,
- 57:44you're like, Oh my God, they're going to win the world.
- 57:47But when push comes to shove, like, I don't know, they're not
- 57:50that good really well on a big stage like this.
- 57:54Yeah, and we'll get on to this. I was trying to like kind of
- 57:57find out who he was and like what he's been doing the last
- 57:59couple of years. So in the US 800 meter
- 58:03championships last year, so like the trials for the Tokyo World
- 58:07Champs team, he was, he finished ninth in the final, which, OK,
- 58:13whatever, finished 9th. But Brazier and Hopple finished
- 58:17first and 3rd in that race. So he was in a completely
- 58:20different race to them. Yeah, he's just going to scalp
- 58:22them on one of the biggest stages.
- 58:25But you have to get into contacts like he's in that
- 58:29college system where you run every single week and like that
- 58:33Olympic trials near the end of the season.
- 58:35So he's probably all race that over, to be honest.
- 58:37Whereas these boys, Brazer and Hubble, they're peaking
- 58:40specifically for this. So shot like Colin Shaman, like
- 58:44he's yeah, he is really, really, really good.
- 58:47I know definitely sign what like Adidas or Nike or something like
- 58:50that. But yeah, it's really hard for
- 58:53them collegians to like keep it up all year round.
- 58:57This might sound a bit harsh, but is the is it as exciting
- 59:01with the 800 when knowing that what Josh how we just ran and
- 59:06after the 600 that happened like a week or so ago, couple weeks
- 59:10ago? Yeah, I was like even that 144
- 59:12like during the summer, like indoors is it must be slower
- 59:16because in the outdoors these boys are rolling like 140 twos
- 59:20consistently last year. So yeah, they're like 2-3
- 59:23seconds off it and. Then how we end?
- 59:25But how he did run that? Yeah, but how he's peeking for
- 59:28like this? How he's peeking for this?
- 59:30He's a Mad Dog. Isn't he?
- 59:33That's not like so then don't you want to like as we're
- 59:37talking about like this is such a major mate and like the the
- 59:40agent does such a good job of bringing in all of the best
- 59:43runners like that, the men's mile and two mile and same for
- 59:47like the women's distance races as well.
- 59:51Like ridiculously stacked. But I feel like how we at the
- 59:55minute, I don't know. He has my he.
- 59:57He feels like the most exciting 800m runner in the world for me
- 1:00:01at the minute. Yeah, but then look, he was
- 1:00:03meant to be on the start list for the Mile and had to scratch
- 1:00:07himself for that. No one I book.
- 1:00:09Clearly, something's happened on the back of that world record
- 1:00:12last week. Flew too close to the sun do you
- 1:00:14think? He peaked too hard.
- 1:00:16Maybe Tom Tell? Well, yeah, I mean, it did feel,
- 1:00:22I don't know why, how Kim Mcphillips has captured my
- 1:00:25attention so much, but when you see he's not on the start list,
- 1:00:28it just kind of changes the dynamic a bit.
- 1:00:31And yes, there's a Spanish guy and then there's a British guy
- 1:00:34in there. But then when there's four
- 1:00:36Americans, you just want a little bit more diversity to it,
- 1:00:39don't you? Like no, when Yoni or that
- 1:00:43Canadian guy or Algerians, like there's so many other good lads
- 1:00:46that aren't there. And then no luck.
- 1:00:50And how, see, he's exciting as well because he's the kid.
- 1:00:53But he was a 600. He ran on this night as well and
- 1:00:56put it in the results. But I seen it and he won
- 1:01:00convincingly. Yeah, he found super well,
- 1:01:04again, what did he run? I think it was 1/14, 1:15 or
- 1:01:10something like that, faster than what Mcphillips run.
- 1:01:14And yeah, and he's that kids only 16, which is like, I was
- 1:01:20trying to tell lady in like about this guy and how he came
- 1:01:24out of nowhere, but she just couldn't grasp it.
- 1:01:26But yeah. She couldn't.
- 1:01:29She couldn't grasp it, or she just didn't care.
- 1:01:32She didn't care. I was like, no, he came over in
- 1:01:36the Olympic trials. Grandma 42.
- 1:01:38It's crazy. It's some of it, some of it's
- 1:01:40like, it's fairly neat, isn't it?
- 1:01:43Yeah. And that's that's why the pod's
- 1:01:46so good, because you, you've got us who do care.
- 1:01:49Yeah. And and some listeners which we
- 1:01:52appreciate, thanks because we go into the weeds on some of this
- 1:01:55stuff. But anyway.
- 1:01:58It's our own little nerdy introversive bubble where we can
- 1:02:01all just geek out over running results no one else in our lives
- 1:02:05wants to know. I think Next up was the men's
- 1:02:08two mile. So I mean, this field was, it's
- 1:02:11probably better than the one who make a mile field arguably.
- 1:02:16So I won't give the results away.
- 1:02:17But yeah, we, well, we're here to read the results, aren't me.
- 1:02:21It was won by Carl Hocker in eight O 7.3.
- 1:02:24One second was Josh Kerr, eight O 7.68.
- 1:02:27Parker Wolf of the US was third, eight O 783.
- 1:02:31Then further down, to show the depth of this race, we had Kai
- 1:02:34Robinson, Geordie Beamish, Graham Blanks, Kupertier and
- 1:02:37Drew Hunter amongst others. I think that page then cuts off
- 1:02:43the rest of them. Graham Fisher was a scratching,
- 1:02:46a late scratching due to illness.
- 1:02:48He is due to make that half marathon debut in March.
- 1:02:52So I mean he got an indoor race done last week in the 2K was it?
- 1:02:57So maybe he's not all that concerned with this and he wants
- 1:03:01to prioritize that half marathon.
- 1:03:03But sad to see him not there. He always makes to be honest.
- 1:03:06That could be a good point. Like this race was objectively
- 1:03:10pretty slow because they were talking about would the 8 minute
- 1:03:13barrier fall. And I think if you look at Grant
- 1:03:17Fisher's 3K world record of last year, 722 or something and scale
- 1:03:24it up for a 3200, which is a two mile, it worked out like 757.
- 1:03:30So some of the chatter was the 8 minute barrier will fall and how
- 1:03:34many, how many of them will dip under 800?
- 1:03:37And perhaps the fact that Fisher wasn't here to push the pace is
- 1:03:41half the reason why they ran 7 seconds slower than 8 minutes.
- 1:03:45Definitely looked like it played a a role, didn't it?
- 1:03:48Sort of lacked anyone that was prepared to take it on once the
- 1:03:50pacemaker dropped off. And yeah, looks like looked like
- 1:03:56people were more interested in racing and winning than they
- 1:03:59were in running fast, which which was still exciting.
- 1:04:03I thought the race itself, like, yeah, it meant that certain you
- 1:04:08knew who to look for in terms of kicks and then you wanted to see
- 1:04:13who was there with the lap to go, albeit that it was still
- 1:04:15getting wound up, like it was still pretty fast, like fast
- 1:04:18enough where some of the kickers just like Jordy Beamish, who,
- 1:04:21you know, has a who out kicked Copper Hawker to win a.
- 1:04:26Was it around this time last year or the year before when he
- 1:04:28won the 50 indoor 1500 meters? Is that two years ago?
- 1:04:33Very. Last year or yeah, but maybe was
- 1:04:36two years ago, you know. Maybe two years ago, yeah,
- 1:04:38because I think he was in maybe injured this time last year,
- 1:04:40wasn't he? And then still build up for
- 1:04:42Tokyo. But you know, he's got a serious
- 1:04:46close on him and he did close, right.
- 1:04:48He, I think he still moved through in the last few laps,
- 1:04:50but he was just, he was still run out of it I think as the
- 1:04:53pace started to wind up and he he wasn't quite in picture so.
- 1:04:58Like he, he was umm, he was way at the back and you can see here
- 1:05:02his last 400 was in like 55 because I thought it was 55.94.
- 1:05:08So he made-up so much ground, but he was still, he was too far
- 1:05:12back for the kick to really. But like, yeah, if he just gave
- 1:05:15himself a little bit less work to do, like again, he probably
- 1:05:18would have won. It So did he have the fastest
- 1:05:20last quarter mile? Yeah.
- 1:05:22Yeah. And then who he was the.
- 1:05:25Only one in the 50 fives. Yeah, he's closed half second
- 1:05:29faster than Hocker, who's close to win the race.
- 1:05:33Yeah, that's interesting, isn't it?
- 1:05:34So like if it's slower again, he potentially has the wheels to
- 1:05:37win the race. So, but it was just fast enough
- 1:05:39with that drive because was it Grand?
- 1:05:41Blanc said. Look to try and make a move at
- 1:05:43one point and go round, but he he didn't quite have the the
- 1:05:47tank, did he, to really test anyone.
- 1:05:51The problem with Hocker now is like, everyone knows he's got
- 1:05:54the kick, but he's also like ridiculously fit.
- 1:05:57This is, it's becoming like increasingly harder to run that
- 1:06:00kick out of him, clearly. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:04I mean, what, what's he run like 13 minutes for 5K?
- 1:06:08And so he's aerobically fit and he's seriously fast.
- 1:06:13But I mean, yeah, in terms of how the race played out, was it
- 1:06:16Parker Wolf who won the US cross country trials?
- 1:06:20He made he made the move with about what, 400 metres to go?
- 1:06:24S took, took over and and made a bit of a drive.
- 1:06:29And that was that move was met by Josh Kerr and Cole Hocker.
- 1:06:34They both counted that and sat on and then and then did Josh
- 1:06:39Kerr then go around to start making his move.
- 1:06:43And then you sort of just could say that Cole was countering
- 1:06:45everything and felt like he knew that he still had another gear
- 1:06:50to go to when he needed to in the last last lap and was too
- 1:06:53good, ran away from everyone. He's just so confident in his
- 1:06:58clothes as well, isn't he? Like as soon as he asks for it,
- 1:07:01it's there. Yeah.
- 1:07:04He talking about the depth of that race, so we commented on
- 1:07:07the top eight there, but our pigs, Owen didn't even get a
- 1:07:12feature. And I he was going, well, I
- 1:07:15thought he was going to like kick on because he took the lead
- 1:07:18pretty early on, but it was still a collegiate record.
- 1:07:21Like, he's still the fastest ever collegian to run that time.
- 1:07:24And he's not even into top 8, which is, yeah, just goes to
- 1:07:27show how deep that field was. Yeah, and 8th and Strand.
- 1:07:30He was. He was in the mix early but
- 1:07:34fighted. When I, when I was watching this
- 1:07:38and I seen the that they didn't split a mile anywhere near like
- 1:07:424 minutes. If you think about the, they're
- 1:07:44trying to split it in sub 8 minutes and Carl Hawker was on
- 1:07:50the front at that point. The pacemaker was obviously
- 1:07:52there, but Hawker even sat off the pacemaker.
- 1:07:55And I bet you some of these guys will be walking away from this
- 1:07:59race, like really frustrated with themselves because they
- 1:08:03allowed, like, you think it's a good tactic to just sit in
- 1:08:08behind. But then if Hawker's on the
- 1:08:10fronts and deliberately making it slow and no one's willing to
- 1:08:13go past him and like, make it hard for him, then he's
- 1:08:17literally just controlling his own destiny because he's made it
- 1:08:20slow. He knows he's going to win if
- 1:08:22it's a slow start and a fast finish and no one else wanted to
- 1:08:26do anything about it until it was too late.
- 1:08:28They, he was asked in an interview, he did like I think
- 1:08:32they made a cut. They asked him a question along
- 1:08:34those lines that you seem to have a bit of a knack for
- 1:08:38finding the front, controlling the tempo and then kicking home
- 1:08:41late. And you could see him smiling at
- 1:08:43the response, like smiling at the question.
- 1:08:45Because yeah, seems to be working very well for.
- 1:08:48Him well, and I know that wasn't the one.
- 1:08:51The goose. The goose was in the mile,
- 1:08:52wasn't he? Next week.
- 1:08:56Just a fun race though, hey, like, in terms of like, you got
- 1:08:5810 people, ten horses that you could, you know, mount an
- 1:09:03argument for potentially winning the race.
- 1:09:06I don't know, Just a very exciting race to watch.
- 1:09:10Like you say, sometimes you get over obsessive over records and
- 1:09:14fast times and stuff, but it's it's actually almost
- 1:09:16refreshingly nice to see a slow first lap or a slow first two
- 1:09:20laps. Because when it's fast it's good
- 1:09:24because there's drama over the record.
- 1:09:26But you can almost see who's going to win before it gets to
- 1:09:29the end. Like you see the people who are
- 1:09:31maybe sitting in 3rd and 4th and they're going to have nothing to
- 1:09:34do with the finish. Whereas when it's slow like this
- 1:09:36the literally can be 5-6 people making their shot for it.
- 1:09:41And the the strength like World Athletics, I thought it was
- 1:09:44good. Like the fact that you can
- 1:09:45anyone can view that. I don't know.
- 1:09:47Oh, and if it's the same fools like country restricted.
- 1:09:51But yeah, we had no issues feeling it.
- 1:09:53Yeah, I had no issues in Ireland.
- 1:09:55It's perfect. And they even showed the the 2K
- 1:10:02the week before I think was before this two mile.
- 1:10:05They showed the 2K race sort of like a nice little recap of
- 1:10:09Fisher and Hobbscast are going at it.
- 1:10:12And but yeah, I really like the way I do these streams.
- 1:10:14Just sign up, make an account and you can access.
- 1:10:16It's perfect. That was confusing to be fair
- 1:10:18for me because I put it on this morning when I woke up and that
- 1:10:222K race was live. I was like, what's going on
- 1:10:26here? So I just clicked off it and
- 1:10:29thought, I'll just come back to it once.
- 1:10:30It's like actually done but annoying.
- 1:10:32I could have actually watched it live, really.
- 1:10:35You're literally like 2 minutes away from there.
- 1:10:39It was the immediate build up. All right.
- 1:10:42Women's want to make a miles, so the want to make a miles
- 1:10:45usually. Well, they do headline this myth
- 1:10:48and they usually attract the biggest fields.
- 1:10:51So in this one, Australia had Jess Hall and Linden Hall going
- 1:10:55back at it again after their battle in Boston last week and
- 1:10:58the world cross cross country successes a few weeks prior.
- 1:11:03And then there was a host of Americans in there as well, of
- 1:11:06which Nikki Hilts came out on top of the Americans and on top
- 1:11:10of everyone. She ran 41964.
- 1:11:14They ran 41964 to win the race, closely followed by Jess in
- 1:11:19second in a much improved 420.11 and Claudia Kasimerska of
- 1:11:25Poland, 3rd 42136, National record.
- 1:11:29Linden Hall closely in behind the 4th, 42145.
- 1:11:35How'd you see this one? Linden's running well, isn't she
- 1:11:39like, like she's only a second behind you, So and I wouldn't
- 1:11:43last year, I wouldn't put her a second behind you so.
- 1:11:46But yeah, Nikki Hill says they're good at running, aren't
- 1:11:51they? Like strong cake?
- 1:11:53Just I feel like it was slow, like I'm looking at the splits
- 1:11:57here, each 400 they went through first lap 63, then 66, then 68
- 1:12:04high and then they dropped a 60. So it wasn't the fastest and but
- 1:12:09still like quality fields. And yeah, it's only the start of
- 1:12:14February, so they, yeah, still got running.
- 1:12:18Yeah. Did you think that Jess maybe
- 1:12:20had another gear towards the end in the lap to overtake Nikki and
- 1:12:23it just she wanted to but just couldn't?
- 1:12:28I wouldn't strong. That's the thing, we're indoors
- 1:12:31as well, and I only realized this now because I ran indoors.
- 1:12:33It's so hard to pass on them. Ben's, it's so hard.
- 1:12:37And then the straight is so short.
- 1:12:39Like if you have the rail, you're in pole position to win
- 1:12:42the race. It's worth so much.
- 1:12:44So like probably on a outdoor track.
- 1:12:48Jess has it every day of the week.
- 1:12:49It's just the indoor, it's different.
- 1:12:51And I'll stretch and I would imagine some of the American
- 1:12:54athletes in particular, not that I mean Jess went to Oregon, so
- 1:12:57would have had experience running indoors.
- 1:12:59But you notice as well often that some of those athletes that
- 1:13:05have gone through their collegiate system that erased so
- 1:13:07much get very get very tactically very good.
- 1:13:10It's strange looking at one of Jess's racism being like, oh,
- 1:13:14yeah, that was that was a decent performance.
- 1:13:17Like she's got one under her belt rather than like judging
- 1:13:19her by the absolute highest, highest standards because of
- 1:13:22kind of like her poor run last week.
- 1:13:25But you kind of give that one like a really good pass mark.
- 1:13:29Not a pass mark, but it's a very good run.
- 1:13:31And now hopefully you're kind of like, forget about what happened
- 1:13:34last week because I was kind of watching her and being like, oh,
- 1:13:39if she has another bad one, like, I don't know, you start to
- 1:13:42worry a little bit. But thankfully she she ran
- 1:13:44really well. Am I right in thinking is it
- 1:13:48Sinclair Johnson who's been running very well and she she
- 1:13:52finished back in 10th. So yeah, it's interesting.
- 1:13:55Like it doesn't take much that's some of the margins in some of
- 1:13:59these races are pretty fine. And if you're just a little bit
- 1:14:02off, you yeah, you can be right off when the when the field to
- 1:14:07as deep as what they are. Yeah, when you're trying to
- 1:14:10measure that peak to almost perfection, the variance week to
- 1:14:13week can be can be big. Over to the men's want to make a
- 1:14:17mile then. So again, this field absolutely
- 1:14:22ridiculous. Now, Starboy, Mr. Ora took the
- 1:14:28win. Cam Myers 347.57 for a world
- 1:14:33lead. Not quite a PB, but who gives a
- 1:14:36shit? He's just won the want to make a
- 1:14:38mile followed by Jared Nagus comes overthrown him.
- 1:14:41Jared had three on the Truss up his sleeve going for his four
- 1:14:44piece second in three 4831 and Mr. World Record from last week.
- 1:14:52Hobbs Kessler in 3rd 348.68. Further down Nico Young, Andrew
- 1:14:58Coskran, Festus Lugart, Robert Farkin, Gary Martin and Ollie
- 1:15:02Hall. Comments and thoughts.
- 1:15:05Not a bad listed list there. Like I know we were just talking
- 1:15:09about the Two Mile, but like, all of those names are top ten
- 1:15:13names, aren't they? Right out of the top class,
- 1:15:15yeah. Like Jared was incredibly
- 1:15:20unlucky not to be representing USA World champs won an Olympic
- 1:15:23medal the year before. Hobbs Kessler just ran a world
- 1:15:27record. Was it 2 weeks ago Andrew
- 1:15:31Cosgrohn was fondlist Tokyo like Robert Farkin was the was one of
- 1:15:37the hot things what, 6 months ago when it came to 1500 that
- 1:15:42Gary Martin with the glasses like we've spoken about him
- 1:15:45before. And then Olly Hall, former
- 1:15:47Commonwealth Games gold medalist, straight 31 guy like
- 1:15:51this. The the field's very stacked, I
- 1:15:54suppose is the comment. Like the splits, calm splits 56
- 1:15:59high first lap, 56 mid second lap, 58 third lap or 400.
- 1:16:06These are all 400, sorry. So 565658 and then a 56 low last
- 1:16:12400. Like that is just hard to
- 1:16:15comprehend how fast he's going. Squeeze, squeeze.
- 1:16:20The lifeout of them strangled them like a bow constrictor.
- 1:16:26Can I, can I make a comment on like it's one thing to it's one
- 1:16:32thing to talk about a result, like to reflect on the results,
- 1:16:35but it's another thing, and this is what we're learning when
- 1:16:38we're talking about running news.
- 1:16:39But it's far more difficult to give accurate predictions than
- 1:16:44it is to give insightful reflections.
- 1:16:47So like we're just commenting on the races as we saw it, but
- 1:16:50commenting on the race before it happens is quite hard.
- 1:16:53And I think we're trying to do a decent job of trying to canvas
- 1:16:56what we think might happen. And that's why I went with, say,
- 1:17:00the three time winner, Jared Nagoos, in terms of thinking
- 1:17:04that he would be a reasonable person to pick.
- 1:17:07And I think you guys were, you know, picking, picking well in
- 1:17:10terms of your picks, right, Ron? You went what, Hobbs?
- 1:17:14Yeah, went with the phone book. And Owen, you were patriotic but
- 1:17:19also had reason to to get behind Andrew.
- 1:17:22Yeah, like he was pushing it. He was doing well.
- 1:17:25But none of us, none of us tips tipped out the the Aussie phenom
- 1:17:32and but perhaps did we get put in our place a little bit by
- 1:17:35that? Yeah, I think he might have
- 1:17:37caught winds or seen he must have seen the post.
- 1:17:40We put out our preview post and maybe read the caption and
- 1:17:44thought not too sure about that one.
- 1:17:47So initially gave us a follow to let us know that perhaps he'd
- 1:17:52seen the preview in the prediction and just that he did
- 1:17:55still exist. How have you guys forgotten
- 1:17:57about me? And then perhaps even more
- 1:18:01boldly, when we put the the prediction vote out to
- 1:18:04listeners, he went on and voted for himself.
- 1:18:08And so we shared this in the group.
- 1:18:11And from that point I was like, shit, that that's like class.
- 1:18:15I hope he wins. Like what a story it'll be.
- 1:18:18And obviously there he is now smoke as anything like he he
- 1:18:22literally went out there and said, I'm going to win.
- 1:18:25And we've just kind of spoke to the quality of the field.
- 1:18:28Yet he was happy to like, OK, he's not saying it publicly and
- 1:18:33putting it on his story, but I mean, he's telling the running
- 1:18:35podcasts that he's going to win the race, so he might as well be
- 1:18:38doing it publicly. And yeah, didn't he just back it
- 1:18:41up? It was a pretty good flex.
- 1:18:43And I mean, I don't know, yeah. I mean, embarrassed in
- 1:18:47hindsight, there were none of us tipped in and myself in
- 1:18:50particular being the Aussie representative.
- 1:18:53But yeah, I don't know. And with the benefit of
- 1:18:58hindsight, like does it look a bit obvious like he's run 347,
- 1:19:01which as we just went through in terms of the 348 that was just
- 1:19:05run by Sam Ruth, like, you know, a whole second quicker.
- 1:19:11What does that do in terms of right?
- 1:19:13Like that's a phenomenal time, but I don't know.
- 1:19:17And are we just getting a little bit too drink the American
- 1:19:21podcast call aid with the, you know, the Let's Run chat?
- 1:19:28I think it's a bit of both. Go on, Owen.
- 1:19:30Sorry. I was, I think it's it's
- 1:19:33different this time, like last year.
- 1:19:35Who's running really well right here for that?
- 1:19:37What was it, the world champ here?
- 1:19:39Yeah. So last year was world champs,
- 1:19:41wasn't it? Yeah.
- 1:19:42He was running really, really well.
- 1:19:44But I don't know, you still sort of had that doubt.
- 1:19:47Like he's young, like he's new, big occasions and all this.
- 1:19:51And he he'd be the first to say he didn't perform on the world
- 1:19:53stage. But I feel like this time round
- 1:19:56it's different. Like I think he's here.
- 1:19:59I think he's finally like arrived.
- 1:20:02And yeah, I think he's like beating yard in the Goose and
- 1:20:05all these boys, like outsmarting them as well.
- 1:20:09Like, I just think it's different this time around.
- 1:20:10And I think he's here to stay now.
- 1:20:12Like that's he's only going to get better.
- 1:20:14Yeah, I think it is a little bit of that like he's, he's levelled
- 1:20:18up, hasn't he? Like perhaps prior to this there
- 1:20:21was maybe a few question marks, like he's got great times and
- 1:20:25stuff, but can he do it against the best or can he do it on the
- 1:20:28big stage? And then this is the emphatic
- 1:20:31answer. Absolutely.
- 1:20:32Yes, he can. It's I feel it's like sort of
- 1:20:38your man Sam route is in cams all situation.
- 1:20:40I feel like fair enough. He's ran super fast and like to
- 1:20:44be honest, I don't know how that kid can even improve anymore.
- 1:20:47Like you think boss, like there's still questions like
- 1:20:51could he do it like on a world stage?
- 1:20:54Whereas Cam has been there, he hasn't from the royal stage.
- 1:20:57But now I don't know. I think this is just different
- 1:20:59now. I think he's he's ready.
- 1:21:02He is him. Yes, he is him.
- 1:21:05And did you see his his interview last week after his
- 1:21:103000 meters? And he talks about, well, last
- 1:21:13year he was working on his strength to make sure he's able
- 1:21:15to be there at the end. And because he was focusing on
- 1:21:19that so much, he didn't really have much of A close.
- 1:21:21He was just trying to put himself in the picture.
- 1:21:23Whereas now he's been able to stack on top of that the fact
- 1:21:26that he's got his speed endurance and he can work off
- 1:21:28that. So it's it's a dangerous combo.
- 1:21:32Yeah, because I think that maybe is it's either perceived or or
- 1:21:36real. I mean, Owen, as you mentioned,
- 1:21:38those times are ridiculous in terms of what his splits are.
- 1:21:40But I think it's a bit tricky because he's a bit like Jacob in
- 1:21:44terms of he's a bit deceptive with when he's moving and
- 1:21:47switching gears. Like some people, it feels very
- 1:21:49obvious when you can see them, like they go to the arms and
- 1:21:52their form changes and their mechanics looks a bit different.
- 1:21:55Whereas like when he was running away in that last lap and he's
- 1:21:57gapping because was it Nagoose and Kessler, they both started
- 1:22:02to close in onto his shoulder. And then with about a hundred
- 1:22:05150 to go or or maybe even slightly less, he just starts to
- 1:22:10move away a little bit and then he's just moving away and that
- 1:22:12home straight. He's just clearing out.
- 1:22:14But he still looks just as smooth as what he did before the
- 1:22:17bell. So it's like it's hard T hard to
- 1:22:20know. Like so then you're like, is he
- 1:22:23has he got a kick or you know, is he is he good?
- 1:22:26Can he close races? And it was like, yeah, no, I
- 1:22:28can. Because Koskren went to the
- 1:22:31front while he was on the front, I think towards the early
- 1:22:33stages, wasn't he? Once the pacemaker went, maybe.
- 1:22:36And then like you could see visibly the Koskren slowed a
- 1:22:39little. And as soon as he slowed, Cam
- 1:22:42just went round, didn't he? And just everything he'd done is
- 1:22:45like, I'm, I'm the alpha in this race.
- 1:22:48Yeah, pretty ballsy move, right to take the you basically towing
- 1:22:53that Hobbs Kessler in terms of his clothes, like his speed, he
- 1:22:56always looks so good. You know that like he's like
- 1:22:58high cadence rips the 800 and you're like, I'm about to tow
- 1:23:01these guys with me for the last 400 meters.
- 1:23:07And he just, yeah, he just absolutely put him to the sword.
- 1:23:10Well was it this for exact race last year when the goose ran the
- 1:23:14the world record? Like the goose is record holder,
- 1:23:17isn't he? And then it got beaten a couple
- 1:23:19days later. Yeah, but yeah, I'll be in some
- 1:23:23European indoor mate, wasn't it? I'll give, I'll give this time
- 1:23:27last year's world record holder a toe to the line, but I know
- 1:23:31I'm going to take his finish out of them.
- 1:23:33Yeah. Yeah, the guy that ran the world
- 1:23:34record last year and then the guy that just ran a 2K record a
- 1:23:38fortnight ago, and I'll just overtake them both and burn
- 1:23:42them. Catch me if you can.
- 1:23:44Yeah. It's the moustache.
- 1:23:48It could be could be something in it.
- 1:23:51His his DMS will be lighting up this week.
- 1:23:56If you're I wonder. What cross he's thinking.
- 1:23:58Saying get back here to Canberra and teach me a thing or two.
- 1:24:01Yeah. I might move to Canberra.
- 1:24:04OK, now something in the water over there.
- 1:24:06Clearly. But to be fair, Speaking of the
- 1:24:08his DMS lighting up, he also in the week signed for chorus.
- 1:24:11Didn't he like the global partner with them?
- 1:24:14And I know ya Hub's a partner. I don't think that they don't
- 1:24:17have like a massive roster of athletes though.
- 1:24:19They just have like a few big influential players.
- 1:24:23So I mean, yeah, he's, he's going well in all directions,
- 1:24:26isn't he? Pretty sure Jess Hall is now
- 1:24:29chorus as well. I think she was wearing the
- 1:24:31armband. That's how you sort of know.
- 1:24:32Of course, athlete, they wear that freaking orange or yellow.
- 1:24:36It's good. Advertising that and I reckon
- 1:24:37it's called dart. I like again, talking about like
- 1:24:40my daughter and and people nerdy out on that stuff like high
- 1:24:43rates, all fairly individual, but getting some insights on
- 1:24:47where those heart rates peak and how they distribute, how you
- 1:24:51meant to distribute your effort and stuff.
- 1:24:52I reckon they'll be getting some pretty cool insights.
- 1:24:55I feel like the chorus technology is like sort of a
- 1:24:59level above the garment. Like are you personally use a
- 1:25:01garment, but for like the chorus app, like you see them at least
- 1:25:05and they can they've got that graph with like your training
- 1:25:07load and all that course is just better at comparing that data.
- 1:25:11I think it's just better. Yeah, I mean, we got great
- 1:25:15insight when we rocked up. Was it one of those Saturday
- 1:25:17tempos and Ryan's little man's light laying down?
- 1:25:23One 1% recovery. I reckon that sent a red flag
- 1:25:29back to like the Chorus people management team or something
- 1:25:33like do a welfare check on this user.
- 1:25:38Speaking of which, to be fair, let me just say this whilst
- 1:25:40we're here, I, my race predictor, give me a a bit of a
- 1:25:44shock in the week because now I've started putting some
- 1:25:46running back into the chorus. It's updating my predicted race
- 1:25:51times to be reflective of the running that I'm giving it.
- 1:25:54So it thinks, well my 5K time right now is 18 minutes 18.
- 1:26:01The good news is I'll still dip a three hour marathon with a two
- 1:26:05hour 59, so the only way is up boys.
- 1:26:09I don't know how these like race predictors work.
- 1:26:13Mine says I'd run AA14265K which I'd take a 3051 ten KA 69 minute
- 1:26:22half and then did 2 hours 30 marathon 2/29/58 for the
- 1:26:28marathon. How's your 5K so the dialed?
- 1:26:31I haven't a clue, I just. It's probably just took your
- 1:26:35actual buddy 5K race from the other week.
- 1:26:39But it wouldn't take nothing. My 10K true, yeah.
- 1:26:43I don't know how they do it anyway.
- 1:26:46Yeah, well, that's the the mill Rose meets.
- 1:26:51I was meant. To ask you if you're Ollie
- 1:26:55whore, what you're doing. Tricky situation that.
- 1:26:58Yeah, I don't know. Like you move up the distance
- 1:27:03because he's not getting on well with the smiling.
- 1:27:06Well, he still ran at 353, but not when everyone else is
- 1:27:09running like 348. You mean when 16 year olds are
- 1:27:14running 348? Yeah, like that is.
- 1:27:17Yeah, I don't know what I'm thinking.
- 1:27:19Have you had a chat about that? We have, yeah.
- 1:27:22Yeah. Did you, did you hear the
- 1:27:23interview from his dad? No.
- 1:27:26Talking a bit to Ryan like he's dead.
- 1:27:29So his dad's was the quite a runner himself and you know, New
- 1:27:34Zealand have such a rich, rich history of like middle distance
- 1:27:38runners. We'd like John Walker, I think
- 1:27:40had the record from like 82. And so they and so you can hear
- 1:27:44his dad trying to process that like his son, his 16 year old
- 1:27:47son, which like you imagine as a parent and you've got a kid,
- 1:27:51right? Like he's still essentially a a
- 1:27:53child that you're responsible for and he's trying to process
- 1:27:56it. My child just be what would have
- 1:27:58been one of my heroes of running growing up this time.
- 1:28:02And he's still a kid And then he's trying and he's like he's
- 1:28:05meant to start school this week, New Zealand school.
- 1:28:08Well, yeah, I've just gone back similar to Oz.
- 1:28:11And so he's like, like, what are we doing?
- 1:28:14Like, what do I do? And like, he's, he was talking
- 1:28:16about Junior World champs, but he would have just run a
- 1:28:18qualified for senior world champs, right?
- 1:28:21Yeah. And so you can skip it.
- 1:28:22Yeah. So you can just hear his mind
- 1:28:24trying to turn over like, and he's still got another year
- 1:28:27because I think they run Junior World champs every two years, so
- 1:28:30another two years of eligibility.
- 1:28:32So you can hear him trying to process the result and know what
- 1:28:36to do, to do the best thing by his son and him as the athlete,
- 1:28:41but then him with the, you know, the education you'll carry with
- 1:28:44you for a long time. So and those memories as kids,
- 1:28:48you know, you wanted to still have them.
- 1:28:49If it was your son, would you keep him in skill?
- 1:28:52I'd try to as best you can. I think you'd you'd try and
- 1:28:55merge it. I think you'd still want him to
- 1:28:59you. You still want him to experience
- 1:29:00things of being a kid, I think. Apparently he they're all so him
- 1:29:06and your man Sam Tanner and Hayden Wilde from this area
- 1:29:10called is it Taranga or something like that.
- 1:29:14Eldoret. What the what?
- 1:29:18A10 No, I just made the EH, as in like some.
- 1:29:21It's like the eh New Zealand equivalent of where all the eh
- 1:29:24Kenyan athletes come from. Something in the water, Owen.
- 1:29:29Yeah, must get over here as well.
- 1:29:32Even though that Boston track, apparently.
- 1:29:35It is a here we go, here we go. Apparently it's like springs
- 1:29:39that's next year. I'll be on the I'm each is over
- 1:29:43there. Some 4 minute mile coming out
- 1:29:47no. No, no, no, no, but no.
- 1:29:50I'd love to go over there and let's say do a mile 3 KA 50 like
- 1:29:54a 5K Be so fun. Such an expensive trip, but I
- 1:29:58think it might be worth it if you get there, if you're over
- 1:30:00there fit and healthy. But yeah, I see the snow over
- 1:30:05there. I think I've seen that video of
- 1:30:07Sam Ruth and Tanner, like jogging around a car park or
- 1:30:10something. It looks outrageous.
- 1:30:13Yeah, to look pretty cool. You know, the scary thing about
- 1:30:16that? Perhaps this is his, his like,
- 1:30:19immaturity coming through as like a refreshing, like fresh
- 1:30:24perspective. In his interview afterwards, he
- 1:30:26literally says, I think I could go faster.
- 1:30:29Like a much a more mature athlete probably might be aware
- 1:30:32of it, but maybe they wouldn't say it.
- 1:30:34Whereas he's just like, oh, that was good room, but like my legs
- 1:30:37were heavier, I'll go faster. But like, surely he is 16.
- 1:30:41Like, he's hardly reached his ceiling.
- 1:30:44He might have like, you never know, Some people pop off and
- 1:30:47then you never hear them again. But like 16 like how fast can he
- 1:30:51go? It is physically, yeah.
- 1:30:55Yeah. It did make me think like,
- 1:30:56because the likes of say, Cam and Sam, like these and yeah,
- 1:31:01Cobb, like bringing these incredibly talented athletes
- 1:31:07into the sport of running, like, you know, it's a bit of a
- 1:31:12movement back towards athletics and getting all really talented
- 1:31:15people into athletics. And I wonder with some of these
- 1:31:18East African nations where it is their national sport that
- 1:31:22perhaps, you know, sometimes I'm quick to be skeptical around
- 1:31:27some of the ages of some of these young athletes.
- 1:31:29But when you go through some of the names that have also run
- 1:31:33similarly good times at a young age, they are probably, you
- 1:31:36know, I suspect it's they're not all being illegitimately labeled
- 1:31:41as, you know, 17 for the purpose of making a world junior team.
- 1:31:45Like, I know there's been a bit of history of that.
- 1:31:48There, did you watch the shot put during the the stream?
- 1:31:53Oh, loosely, yeah. Mom, there was like a 19 year
- 1:31:57old kid and he looked like a fully blown man mountain.
- 1:32:02I was like this kids, hardly 19. Amazing.
- 1:32:06Chelsea. I don't know.
- 1:32:09I think you're somewhere in Africa.
- 1:32:10I don't know. But it yeah, he just didn't look
- 1:32:14like a 19 year old kid. But that being said, what about
- 1:32:17how old do you think Luke Littler is?
- 1:32:19Oh yeah, he's, yeah, he's only 18.
- 1:32:22Yeah, it looks 40. But like, you put Cam Myers
- 1:32:27besides that shop putter and you're like, Nope, no chance
- 1:32:30he's the same age or even look littler for that.
- 1:32:32Yeah. That's what the kebab diet will
- 1:32:35do to you. Yeah.
- 1:32:37We have we have some more news. We've got the Maragami half.
- 1:32:42Dean, join a lead on this. I can, yeah.
- 1:32:44Yeah. So.
- 1:32:46I think it's very fitting that it was literally this day last
- 1:32:50year. We we were on it.
- 1:32:52How's that hey? Yeah, this one.
- 1:32:55Bizarre to think about, but yeah.
- 1:32:58So marigami is is it a fishing village?
- 1:33:04You know, what is it? A few hour bullet train ride
- 1:33:06from from Tokyo and it's where the likes of Callum Hawkins ran
- 1:33:15has run 60 minutes flat Our the Australian half marathon record
- 1:33:20speed set by Brett Robinson 5957 so and Izzy back Doyle on the
- 1:33:26same day that we ran set the women's half record was at 67
- 1:33:32low right 60. Yeah, like 715.
- 1:33:35Or. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:39When we were there last year. So we all ran the the half
- 1:33:41marathon last year, albeit the oh, and you were having to leave
- 1:33:45slightly after us because they wouldn't because there was
- 1:33:49complications, right, In terms of getting you into the race as
- 1:33:52there sometimes is, as it seems with some of these races.
- 1:33:56Yeah, so because I hadn't, yeah, it's I think it's crazy, the
- 1:34:00standards. So to get into the A wave, you
- 1:34:03have to either run a sub 230 marathon or a sub 30 minute 10K,
- 1:34:10which I think are just two totally different times.
- 1:34:13And I hadn't run either. So yeah, I was shot put in the B
- 1:34:17wave. And normally like you're like,
- 1:34:20all right, they go off together. You can catch them, but I don't
- 1:34:23know why it's bizarre. They let the you guys in the A
- 1:34:26wave out and the night to wait for 15 minutes.
- 1:34:30So it was basically 2 totally separate races.
- 1:34:32And it looked like 2 totally separate races.
- 1:34:34So when Ryan and I finished, we could get to wait to watch your
- 1:34:37race and you're, you're effectively one or a second in
- 1:34:40your race, right. But the, but the, the race that
- 1:34:44we had gone for was the, the race that Ryan and I set off in.
- 1:34:49And that attracted a great field both in terms of the corporate
- 1:34:56semi slash professional athletes as well as a lot of the college
- 1:35:00athletes or university athletes over there.
- 1:35:03And you could see them because they're all in their university
- 1:35:05colours. And I think for context, like
- 1:35:07say Brett ran 61 high there last year and I think he was 70
- 1:35:12something. So it just talks to just how
- 1:35:15phenomenally deep this race is. And it's it's an out and back,
- 1:35:19you turn around pretty much a halfway finishes on an athletics
- 1:35:23field. When we did it, what was it
- 1:35:26about 6-7 degrees? Race starts at 10:30 AM.
- 1:35:31It was just cold. I just remember it being cold,
- 1:35:33wasn't it when we started? Yeah.
- 1:35:36Delayering right on the start line where I mean stashing it in
- 1:35:39a Bush. Yeah.
- 1:35:42But in terms of depth, like finding a group to run in is no
- 1:35:45issue, very much like what I mentioned like the Valencia
- 1:35:48race, you can settle in with with folks.
- 1:35:51I was just gonna say, I'd say like the depth is very, very
- 1:35:53similar as in like if you're in the first group, it's just a big
- 1:35:57wave of people and you're just constantly running with someone
- 1:36:00or picking someone off or yeah. Not completely pancake flat, I
- 1:36:04would say was there. I can't remember if it was on
- 1:36:07the way out or way back, but there was there's some small
- 1:36:10pinches wasn't there just into, you know, like that you just
- 1:36:13would roll over. But if you, you're really on
- 1:36:15your rivet, you, you feel them. It's funny, we when we chatted
- 1:36:20to Brett after the race last year, he was like, hey, when I
- 1:36:24ran my Aussie record, I didn't notice any of those little
- 1:36:27dimples. But he's like, fuck, I felt all
- 1:36:29of them. When we you know, when that this
- 1:36:32time around which I could empathize with because yeah, I
- 1:36:35blew up at about 10K Venterza results this year.
- 1:36:41It wasn't as deep, was it? No, not from.
- 1:36:45So from a Japanese perspective, I think it was the first time a
- 1:36:48Japanese runner had broken 60 minutes last year and there was
- 1:36:51multiple and they ran. I thought it was like 50
- 1:36:53nineteens last year. Is that right?
- 1:36:55Around 5917, nineteen in that sort of range.
- 1:37:00But yeah, the person that won was is it Richard Etia, who is
- 1:37:06Japanese Kenyan born, but Japanese BA runs for a Japanese
- 1:37:12university over there. So he spent his time over there
- 1:37:15and he ran a university record of 59 O 7, which is very
- 1:37:22impressive performance. And he was, he was well clear of
- 1:37:26second who was in sixty O 6. I did see the Sprint finish for
- 1:37:303rd and 4th. The 3rd place athlete was is it
- 1:37:36Santiago? Is it?
- 1:37:40Yeah, yeah. So that was a Uruguayan record I
- 1:37:44think in 6021. But yeah, it looked like AI
- 1:37:51don't know how to get too much. I tried to find a stream for it.
- 1:37:54Did you guys catch any of the coverage?
- 1:37:58I didn't even try try and find a Japanese stream and a theater in
- 1:38:02Japanese or impossible to get. I went on to is it watch
- 1:38:05athletics, you know, they sometimes will post where to
- 1:38:08find the live results in the live stream.
- 1:38:10And I went through all that and I just.
- 1:38:11Yeah. I went to like Japan running
- 1:38:14news and they were kind of like posting semi updates on Twitter
- 1:38:18or X which is like semi useful. They are the a video of like the
- 1:38:22start line and then they would say the leaders are through like
- 1:38:2510K in this on the on for this pace, which is like good insight
- 1:38:29to be fair, considering there's no stream.
- 1:38:32But yeah, I was just waiting for the results to flash off.
- 1:38:36I think Sandra Mohan was also in the field, which is like quite
- 1:38:39random. He finished eighth and 6046.
- 1:38:43Yeah, I think he's run that race before.
- 1:38:44I mean, he runs a few races. I think he's missed his best
- 1:38:47time from his when he ran 205 was from a Japanese marathon,
- 1:38:51wasn't. It it's funny the way.
- 1:38:54No. She's going to say when you see
- 1:38:57like in a Japanese race like this, if you see a couple of
- 1:38:59Westerners, it's weird. It wouldn't be weird if there's
- 1:39:03no Westerners, and it wouldn't be weird if there was a shit
- 1:39:06load the Westerners. But the fact is like two or
- 1:39:09three or three or four, It's like how come either no one else
- 1:39:14is onto it, or in our case, how come we're onto it and no one
- 1:39:18else is? Did you see what they split 10K
- 1:39:22in? Yeah, sub 28 wasn't.
- 1:39:24It yeah, like 28, yeah, 50 odd not bad, not bad going that was
- 1:39:30the top what top eight? We're all in that, that group,
- 1:39:35yeah, 14 minutes through 5K and then got slightly quicker
- 1:39:39between 5:00 and 10:00, so rolling pretty fast.
- 1:39:43That was, I don't know if you see in on that Japan running
- 1:39:47news, they posted a video of like the that Richard the tier
- 1:39:51guy like doing the, you know, those 3/4 of a lap at the
- 1:39:54stadium when he finishes. And straightaway I noticed
- 1:39:57there's like flag poles with like Kagawa Maragami or whatever
- 1:40:01the flag is and they are like stiff as in the wind.
- 1:40:05And I was trying to look at it and work out which way it was
- 1:40:08blowing. And I think Alish Mccolgan's
- 1:40:12husband or partner posted something saying about like a
- 1:40:16headwind for 8 miles. I don't understand how it can be
- 1:40:19for 8 miles given it to out and back.
- 1:40:21But. I take his point that the
- 1:40:23headwind was on the return like so I think it was a pretty ugly
- 1:40:27second-half in terms of conditions.
- 1:40:30And what Aussies had Liam Burton in the race who ran 6126 which
- 1:40:36moves him to 37th all time? Oh sorry, no, it was 37th in the
- 1:40:40race, 12th full time Aussie. Pretty solid.
- 1:40:45Yeah, good run. And then in the women's race,
- 1:40:48and I would imagine they would have been fairly well enveloped
- 1:40:52by the men, right, As was the case when we did it, it's sort
- 1:40:55of hard to to find a lot of the race, so I can't quite make out
- 1:41:02the name of the winner. Dolphin, Amare or Amare Dolphin?
- 1:41:09I'm not sure which way. This is terrible.
- 1:41:13There's three names on the piece of paper.
- 1:41:15Amare, Dolphin, Nyabo. I think that might be the the
- 1:41:19way round it is. And second was Ailish Mccolgan.
- 1:41:23Third. Yeah, I can't.
- 1:41:25Again, I'm struggling with this. Suzanne Comasso and then Izzy,
- 1:41:30but Doyle 4th. Charlotte Perdue was further
- 1:41:36down in 11th. And in between them is a host of
- 1:41:39Japanese athletes. Yeah, so the winning time 6615
- 1:41:44for the Kenyan girl. Ailish ran 67 O 8 and Izzy in
- 1:41:48fourth in 6815. I'm looking at the splits here
- 1:41:52and it's really hard to see which way the headwind and
- 1:41:55tailwind was because in the lads between their 15 split was
- 1:42:02faster than their 20K split. So that 5K.
- 1:42:06So you presume from 15 to 20 there was a bit of a headwind
- 1:42:09but in the women a lot on them have gone faster from 15 to 20.
- 1:42:14Like they speed up instead of slowing down which is it's hard
- 1:42:18to tell like as McCall can actually speed up in that period
- 1:42:21whereas the winner of the lads actually slowed down.
- 1:42:24Because the bloody sensible mate.
- 1:42:25And they met. They measure their races better
- 1:42:27than those fellas. But it's hard to see which way
- 1:42:31the headwind was if it was super strong.
- 1:42:33Like it doesn't seem to be a massive like slow down, forget
- 1:42:37me. Yeah, you think it'd be more
- 1:42:39obvious? Yeah.
- 1:42:41So basically wind is not an excuse.
- 1:42:45We've come to the conclusion here.
- 1:42:47We. Go no those those.
- 1:42:49It's just in your head blistering.
- 1:42:52To get over it. Should we rewind?
- 1:42:55Was it port to pub? No.
- 1:42:56What was the but but bluff to? Don't get me chocolate.
- 1:43:02Wasn't wasn't there wind there? There was Wind Hills.
- 1:43:09No, I was just wrote after I was cooked.
- 1:43:12I was cooked. I was in the oven, Yeah, not a
- 1:43:16good experience. Injured.
- 1:43:19We should say I think that given the wind, that's a great run by
- 1:43:24Izzy. It's her second fastest half
- 1:43:26ever. Like it's easy to look at that
- 1:43:28and be like, Oh yeah, but she's national record holder.
- 1:43:30She's around a minute and a half quicker, but I don't, I
- 1:43:34genuinely don't think conditions allowed for it.
- 1:43:37Which also makes a Lish Mccolgans 67 O 8 insanely
- 1:43:43impressive and I know a. She's run 65.
- 1:43:48She's run. 65 she's national record dollar 6543 It's also her
- 1:43:53third fastest time ever boss. Wait for Izzy, for Izzy, go on.
- 1:43:58So Izzy has run 67 low and then our second fastest time is that
- 1:44:036851. Yeah, and then she's peppered
- 1:44:07like 69 a few times. Wow, that's crazy.
- 1:44:12Marigami last year was the perfect storm if you're in the
- 1:44:15seated stars. Ouch, I think we should have
- 1:44:24marigami again. A highway guy.
- 1:44:27Boston next year, Marigami the year after, and then we all go
- 1:44:31Boston like a American Marathon. Boston will be you indoor race
- 1:44:37into a into a marathon. Why not?
- 1:44:42Yeah. A licious time, though I know
- 1:44:44you point out that she's she's run 65 only, with a 67 there
- 1:44:50yesterday. Only Paula Radcliffe, Carly
- 1:44:53Thackery and Jess Warner George have ever ran first faster than
- 1:44:57that time, which puts it in pretty good stead as it is.
- 1:45:01Yeah, she's wait till Paula Radcliffe has only ran 6647 and
- 1:45:08she's ran 215. 214 hasn't she? Does that add up?
- 1:45:14Based on the typical maths, no. No super.
- 1:45:19She's a double +7. Yeah.
- 1:45:22Yeah, no super shoes. That's a.
- 1:45:25Wow. We should we should we should
- 1:45:27check confirm this. I think she's 215, Paula.
- 1:45:31Yeah. Oh yeah, OK.
- 1:45:34She ran that two, that 66 in Bristol.
- 1:45:39I've never heard of Bristol being fast to be honest.
- 1:45:43That's a fairpoint. Who wants to go to Bristol and
- 1:45:47run anyway? Nobody.
- 1:45:51It's funny, like seeing marigami crop up had me thinking about
- 1:45:54last year and one of the parts which stands out mostly in my
- 1:45:59mind is so just have to check the results here to see who the
- 1:46:02guy was who won. It was Alexander Munyao.
- 1:46:05Remember him? He's won London and maybe
- 1:46:07another major marathon. And because we had that stupid
- 1:46:12seeded start, somehow Dean and I got into like the elites.
- 1:46:17I don't think it was like the warm up area, but we kind of
- 1:46:19don't like the little walk out or something with them.
- 1:46:22Didn't we remember when we were doing strides there?
- 1:46:24And there's like Rory Linklater, Izzy Breath, Andy Jake ran to
- 1:46:30Japan, was there and it was so funny.
- 1:46:34Like I was just looking around thinking, what am I doing here?
- 1:46:37Like that is the the peak imposter syndrome I've ever had.
- 1:46:41Didn't you then text, didn't you say to Brett?
- 1:46:42I'll text you later. Caught caught eyes with Brett
- 1:46:47and said we'll have a beer later mate.
- 1:46:50But I remember hearing Izzy say to it maybe it was like Andy as
- 1:46:53well. Like is that the guy off YouTube
- 1:46:56about Jay? Because obviously, like he was,
- 1:46:58he was on YouTube back then, but it was nowhere near as big as he
- 1:47:01is now. He blew up after he came on this
- 1:47:05podcast, didn't he? The inflection point like like
- 1:47:11my life type did. Nice, we are still going on the
- 1:47:15agenda because London Marathon have released their fields for
- 1:47:20next year I. Don't know if you caught wind
- 1:47:22next month. Yeah, April, rather next
- 1:47:27rendition of. I don't know if you caught wind
- 1:47:30of them, but they're rather obscene, both in terms of
- 1:47:34international talent and homegrown talent.
- 1:47:37Yeah, I was like, do you remember we were talking about
- 1:47:40the Boston fields recently and I was like, far out, they're
- 1:47:43stacked. And so then to see another one,
- 1:47:45you're like, yeah. That's where O'berry's gone.
- 1:47:49You think O'berry's not doing Boston, she's going to London.
- 1:47:53Must have got a pretty decent incentive.
- 1:47:56Absolutely. She's not going there for free.
- 1:48:00Shit, yeah, look at that women's field takes the Safa, Saffan
- 1:48:03Hassan, Jeff Cos guy Jeff Church here, O'berry.
- 1:48:07That is five, like, multiple major winners, Olympic
- 1:48:11champions, world champions, usually.
- 1:48:13Like, if there's two, that's a good battle.
- 1:48:16And then these like kind of fill around that five with two 11213,
- 1:48:22two 14214, and then Helen O'berry.
- 1:48:26And then from a British angle, you've got Charlotte Purdue,
- 1:48:30222, Rose Harvey 223, Abby Donnelly, 224, Hailish
- 1:48:34Mcculligan, 224, Josh Warner Judd, 224.
- 1:48:38The Uruguayan girl who finished, was she second?
- 1:48:42Dean? You were talking about her last
- 1:48:43week in the World Champs marathon.
- 1:48:45She's there. It's yeah, is are these going to
- 1:48:50dominate this year? Is that the world major is going
- 1:48:52to be the the marquee distance events and and there's even some
- 1:48:56very impressive athletes choosing to debut.
- 1:48:59Isn't there like feels like these fields are just getting
- 1:49:02and the budgets must be very good and very good from a
- 1:49:06spectator perspective. Yeah, have.
- 1:49:10Speaking of debuts, Kajalja is listed as a marathon debut in
- 1:49:14the men's field. He's former world half marathon
- 1:49:19record holder, isn't he? Yeah, 57.
- 1:49:23The most unlike yeah, 5731 or something.
- 1:49:28So that you've got him debut in Sawway 202, Kaplimo 202 and that
- 1:49:36Theresa Galarta 202. There's 3202 guys.
- 1:49:40Toler has won it multiple times. Plus Kajasha break 204. 203
- 1:49:46probably wins it I assume. London can be hit, London can be
- 1:49:50fast and it can be. It's really weird.
- 1:49:53It was really warm last year apparently.
- 1:49:55Yeah. Was it when keep Chogi or no who
- 1:49:58was who's the current record keep kept him?
- 1:50:04Yeah, he didn't he what? That was when he he absolutely
- 1:50:09ripped 1, didn't he? I'm pretty sure.
- 1:50:11Yeah, like a 201 or something there.
- 1:50:13I think so, yeah. And so with Saway and Kaplimo,
- 1:50:19there's been chatter of like, could 2 hour barrier fall?
- 1:50:22Will will they have a a go at it here?
- 1:50:26Because Saways, who had a go at Berlin, didn't he?
- 1:50:34And unfortunately was not dealt the best conditions but still
- 1:50:38went through halfway in like 60 flash.
- 1:50:42So we've been there once before. Yeah.
- 1:50:46And then Joshua Chip Chipser, guys, there come war, War
- 1:50:50Petros. From a British perspective,
- 1:50:54you've got Emil Mohammed, Mohammed, Phil Sussman, Paddy
- 1:50:57Diva. From an Irish point of view,
- 1:51:00Peter Lynch is in there. Aussies have got Tim Vincent's
- 1:51:03Water start list, that is for him to make and Liam Burton's in
- 1:51:08there as well. Further down the British one,
- 1:51:12Jake Smith, Mark Scott, Jack Rowe, Alfie Manthorpe's making
- 1:51:15his debut. It's just and Jake Barraclough's
- 1:51:18there as well. He's trying to do the Phil
- 1:51:21Sessman build. I think he's running Tokyo 8
- 1:51:23weeks before, which yeah, can either go one of two ways.
- 1:51:32But super excited for Alfie. Like, yeah, he could pop off.
- 1:51:38He obviously he's gone. I'd probably gone for the
- 1:51:40European standard, which is I want to say two O 930 or
- 1:51:45something like that, which is definitely within Israel.
- 1:51:49House is just I think Ralphie is just a fueling.
- 1:51:51Like he's nailed 1/2 and we've seen people nailed 1/2 and just
- 1:51:55falter in the marathon. So yeah, he's off to spend last
- 1:51:59three weeks in Sierra Nevada with grin.
- 1:52:01So he's either going to be cooked or it's going to be
- 1:52:05flying. Yeah.
- 1:52:10I'm sort of excited to see the I'm excited to see the
- 1:52:14Youtubers. So I think there is a Hugo for
- 1:52:16Joe Hugo Frye. Is he doing Boston or he's doing
- 1:52:19Boston? But Cole Gibbons, Cole running,
- 1:52:22he's doing London as well. So excited to see how because
- 1:52:25he's right. I think around 216 last year and
- 1:52:28I think he last week he ran like 250 kilometers or something nuts
- 1:52:32and he said he's feeling good, which I don't know how and but
- 1:52:36yeah, I'd be impressed to see how he goes because he's getting
- 1:52:38coached now by Ben Connor, you know, Ben Connor.
- 1:52:43Yeah, yeah. And Lily Partridge, a little
- 1:52:45coaching. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:52:46So, yeah. So I'd love to go over and look
- 1:52:49at it at these races. I don't know if we better seen
- 1:52:52it in person or actually watching it, because at least
- 1:52:54when you're watching it, you sort of you get the commentary
- 1:52:57and all. But I think the atmosphere if
- 1:52:59you went over would be so good as well.
- 1:53:00Even just like after seeing I'm grin in like the Flash in
- 1:53:04Valencia, I'd love to see these boys moving like in the
- 1:53:07marathon. And just yeah, there we go.
- 1:53:10Yeah, that's got absolutely hooking 201K now, just making it
- 1:53:13look like they're jogging. Yeah.
- 1:53:15Be crazy. Paddy Diva, by the way, after
- 1:53:19was it New York, he finished fourth or something last year,
- 1:53:22wasn't it? Then can he go and run a fast
- 1:53:25one here at London, a meal trying to retain his status of
- 1:53:28being the current best British marathoner assessment, trying to
- 1:53:32make the step up to take it off them.
- 1:53:35This is all sorts going on. But yeah, we've got weeks and
- 1:53:39weeks to talk about this and we are two hours deep into this
- 1:53:44podcast episode, so. We shall run the last double
- 1:53:47training news. I don't know if you guys have
- 1:53:49one Owen and I deemed offline it was immaterial.
- 1:53:56They didn't wager enough money to really get a shout out, did
- 1:53:58they? Just a little slap on the wrist.
- 1:54:01Yeah, that was that was what we said little.
- 1:54:05Come on guys. Well, we may talk about it now
- 1:54:07that we've. Mentioned something?
- 1:54:08You might make the news. That's right, yeah.
- 1:54:11Did you notice? Yeah.
- 1:54:12Did you notice? Is it?
- 1:54:14I've forgotten her name but she had a a bit more of a dip didn't
- 1:54:18she? Yeah, but she just, all right.
- 1:54:19Basically, guys, a couple of people got what they were
- 1:54:23gambling on, like the World Championships when they're
- 1:54:25competing. So if you're actually competing,
- 1:54:27if you're a professional runner, you cannot put money on your
- 1:54:31sport basically. And a few people have got caught
- 1:54:35but like 1 lad got, I think he bet like £300 or something and
- 1:54:40then he admitted it. So he got like 3 months which is
- 1:54:42nothing but there was this in. Prison or suspension?
- 1:54:46Suspension prison would be harsh.
- 1:54:50I think the most was a French middle distance runner.
- 1:54:53She won five grand off a €2000 bat in the 2024 European
- 1:55:01Championships in Rome and she just had to give like the three
- 1:55:05grand she made she had to give to charity.
- 1:55:07So just little slaps on the wrist.
- 1:55:09It's not too crazy. They should have put the house
- 1:55:11on it. Man and all they should have
- 1:55:14gone to the world champs and when Carl Hawker was getting 8
- 1:55:16to one for the 5K yeah. Or Jordy Beamish.
- 1:55:22He would have man. Kind of.
- 1:55:25He would have, yeah, If he'd if he'd found that in the form
- 1:55:29guide, you would have been doing better than most.
- 1:55:33Yes, they actually. Didn't know they couldn't.
- 1:55:34Bet that was their argument. Yeah.
- 1:55:37Which is. Probably fair enough.
- 1:55:38You're. Not betting on your event?
- 1:55:41Wondering where they found the Lions?
- 1:55:47So I may have had a look at ahead of Milrose again, just to
- 1:55:52try for for research purposes, tried to understand who the
- 1:55:56markets might have thought were favorite for some of these
- 1:55:59races. Couldn't find anything. 117 year
- 1:56:02history can't now, can't put his act on it.
- 1:56:05Probably for the best. Have you seen the the German
- 1:56:08discus thrower Steven Richer? The well, they're just
- 1:56:12embarrassing him really because they've stated that he staked
- 1:56:15€40. Like come on, what?
- 1:56:17Just leave him out of it. He's not trying to do like
- 1:56:23inside the trade with not really EUR there, is he?
- 1:56:28How did they even ping him like that?
- 1:56:31They passed a wide net there to catch him anyway and you're
- 1:56:35literally in the jail anyway. Which do we need?
- 1:56:39We probably need to wrap wrap it up.
- 1:56:42Right in bed guys, if you. Have double trouble guys.
- 1:56:46I've got one. It's been sitting with me for a
- 1:56:50few weeks and I've kept forgetting about it.
- 1:56:52And as you will have picked up from my training recaps with the
- 1:56:56transition or the merger from running to cycle and it's people
- 1:57:01running and or walking in, well mainly walking to be fair in the
- 1:57:06cyclone lanes of footpaths, particularly when when it's a
- 1:57:10shared footpath, it's fine because it's just, it is what it
- 1:57:13is. You, you both have to appreciate
- 1:57:15and respect each other has the right to be there and just be
- 1:57:17safe about it. But when there's a bloody
- 1:57:20footpath right next to the cycle path, don't be so arrogant as to
- 1:57:24walk in the cycle path. High agree.
- 1:57:31I agree with this. I agree with that.
- 1:57:32In a straight in Australia, your facilities are incredible.
- 1:57:35You've got paths for walking and running and you've got a path
- 1:57:38for cycling. Like these are spoiled for
- 1:57:39choice. Here in Ireland, it's a war
- 1:57:41zone. Like you've got carriers on
- 1:57:43paths and bikes on. Yeah, it's just a war zone.
- 1:57:46So user spoiler for choice over there.
- 1:57:49I get yelled at occasionally because there's like slithers of
- 1:57:52walk path and I'm just running a little bit into their bike path.
- 1:57:57But like, you've got so much bike path, just go round.
- 1:58:00But you might make a sudden movement and then knock them
- 1:58:02off. They're flying.
- 1:58:04Slide it, but be careful. Go around.
- 1:58:07OK, what? Teens precious.
- 1:58:10No right? I agree, Ryan.
- 1:58:12I agree. No, I will put my hand up and
- 1:58:15say back in the day when I was a runner, I have, I have run on
- 1:58:20psychopaths because you think, Oh, well, if you're doing a
- 1:58:22session, then you, you're 1 above the walkers on The Walking
- 1:58:26path. Like you don't want to be
- 1:58:28sprinting past the walkers. You want to be in the fast lane
- 1:58:31basically. But then now as a cyclist, my
- 1:58:34perspective is shifted and it's a little bit dangerous if you're
- 1:58:37flying down there 40 KS an hour and there's people running.
- 1:58:41We've lost him on. He was in Lycra as well on
- 1:58:44Thursday. New new new top, new new Knicks
- 1:58:49went past me up Cardiacs saying, you know, hey mate, jump on if
- 1:58:54you can. What has happened?
- 1:58:58It's done, done, the come mate said.
- 1:59:00Catch me if you can. Cody shot.
- 1:59:06He did get to the top first. Well done.
- 1:59:10But yeah, you're a runner. I'm not.
- 1:59:12Anyway, guys, that's us. Big episode.
- 1:59:14Hope you enjoyed it. Let us know what you think.
- 1:59:17We'll be back next week to do it again.
- 1:59:19Happy 50th guys, cheers to another 50 more.
- 1:59:22Oh what we see the giveaway. See ya when.
- 1:59:27We. Say something about the
- 1:59:28giveaway. Shit, yeah, if we.
- 2:00:53Music.
