- 0:00Welcome to Reform Thinking, the place where we take complex
- 0:03theological concepts, stacks of historical documents and focused
- 0:07research, and extract the clarity and insight you need.
- 0:11Today, we're undertaking a deep dive into sacred history itself.
- 0:14We are. We're focusing on Jonathan
- 0:16Edwards structure of time, specifically the flow of events
- 0:20following the resurrection of Christ.
- 0:22That's a massive undertaking, but it's absolutely vital for
- 0:26understanding Edward's entire system.
- 0:28Where are we drawing this from? Our main source is his
- 0:31comprehensive theological treatise, A History of the Work
- 0:35of Redemption. And you really have to see that
- 0:37this work isn't simply a historical record, right?
- 0:40It's a framework. It's an argument that history is
- 0:43a unified, ordered movement, and it's dictated entirely by the
- 0:46redemptive program of God. And our mission for you today is
- 0:49pretty simple. It's to understand the specific
- 0:51purpose, the logic, and the structured stepwise fulfillment
- 0:55of Christ's work in this third and final period.
- 0:58Which is a huge period of time. A huge period.
- 1:01We're talking about the period stretching from the resurrection
- 1:03right up until the end of the world.
- 1:05I mean the 2000 years we currently inhabit.
- 1:07We need to grasp why this immense span of time is treated
- 1:12as one unified movement, and what its specific, glorious
- 1:16outcome is meant to be. Precisely.
- 1:18We need to see that history for Edwards is designed to secure
- 1:22the success of Christ's purchase.
- 1:25We aren't looking at random, disconnected events.
- 1:27We are looking at the preordained administration of a
- 1:30victory that's already been won. OK, let's get into this.
- 1:33Let's start with the fundamental transition that marks the start
- 1:37of this final age, that shift from, you know, the struggle and
- 1:40preparation of the past to the ultimate harvest.
- 1:43When Edwards lays out his structure, he creates a really
- 1:46clear rupture point. The very sharp line.
- 1:48The first two periods of redemption they were primarily
- 1:50about setting the stage. They included all the
- 1:52preparatory events before Christ's incarnation and then
- 1:55the actual agonizing work of his humiliation, suffering, and
- 1:59death. But the moment Christ rises from
- 2:01the dead, the entire character of sacred history changes.
- 2:04In what way? It becomes a history of
- 2:06application, not acquisition. This third period is dedicated
- 2:10entirely to bringing about the great effect or success of
- 2:14Christ's purchase. It's a profound change of state.
- 2:18The focus shifts from the mediator suffering for his
- 2:21people to the mediator reigning for his people.
- 2:24And that's not just a minor shift, is it?
- 2:26It defines the whole tone of the post Resurrection Church.
- 2:29It has to. The Old Testament Saints, they
- 2:32looked forward through types and shadows.
- 2:34Even the period of Christ's life on earth was still leading up to
- 2:37the great Sacrifice. But this new era, the one we're
- 2:40in, is one of total fruition. We are living in the time of the
- 2:44secured outcome. Edwards captures this
- 2:47beautifully, using the imagery of light to contrast, you know,
- 2:50anticipation versus fruition. He admits that success was seen
- 2:53before Christ. Sure, Abraham believed the
- 2:55prophet spoke. Of course, But that success was,
- 2:59in his words, preparatory by way of anticipation.
- 3:02It was like gathering some few fruits before the harvest.
- 3:04It's good, but it's partial. Exactly.
- 3:07It's a taste. That distinction between the few
- 3:09fruits and the full harvest is powerful, but his light analogy
- 3:13is even more striking. Right, He says previous success
- 3:15was light that was reflected coming from the moon and the
- 3:18planets. It was real light, but it was
- 3:20secondary indirect. But this period, beginning with
- 3:24the resurrection, this is the daytime after the sun is risen,
- 3:28the source of the light, Christ in his glory, his work finished,
- 3:32his Spirit poured out, is now fully present.
- 3:35It's direct, it's shining. We are.
- 3:38We're now experiencing the direct, unmediated radiance of
- 3:41the accomplished work. And that's why the success in
- 3:44this third period is meant to be so overwhelmingly glorious
- 3:47compared to the previous ages. That's the theological necessity
- 3:50that divines the next two millennia.
- 3:52Christ finished the greatest and most difficult of all works, the
- 3:56work of humiliation and suffering required to satisfy
- 3:59God's justice. And Edwards is so clear on this
- 4:01point. Christ is never to suffer again.
- 4:04So therefore the history that follows can't be defined by a
- 4:07struggle to earn redemption, it has to be defined by attainment
- 4:10and reward. That's the key.
- 4:12When we view history from the resurrection onward, Edwards
- 4:15demands we recognize this entire span as the time for Christ to
- 4:19obtain the joy that was set before him.
- 4:22This isn't just a passive waiting period then.
- 4:24Not at all. Every historical event, every
- 4:27conversion, every political tremor that shakes the earth is
- 4:30the result of God actively rewarding His Son.
- 4:34We see that reflected in the prophet Isaiah, don't we?
- 4:36Edwards points to Christ having made his soul an offering for
- 4:40sin, now receiving his seed. And seeing that he sees his seed
- 4:44to have a portion with the great, and to divide the spoil
- 4:47with the strong, The historical unfolding of the church is,
- 4:50well, it's simply Christ taking possession of the spoils of his
- 4:53cross. Think about what that does to
- 4:55our understanding of the day-to-day workings of the
- 4:57world. It changes everything.
- 4:59It means that Providence isn't a series of random happenings, and
- 5:03it's not just a general upholding of creation either.
- 5:06No. For Edwards, all dispensations
- 5:09of God's Providence from this time until the final
- 5:12consummation are specifically designed to give Christ His
- 5:15reward and fulfill the goal of His earthly work.
- 5:19Providence is a targeted delivery system for the Cross's
- 5:22success. So when we see the gospel
- 5:24advancing in a previously closed nation, or a major spiritual
- 5:28reform sweeping through a denomination, what we're
- 5:31actually watching is Christ collecting his designated
- 5:34portion. Yes, it turns every historical
- 5:36victory for the church into a necessary act of divine justice.
- 5:40It's a visible piece of the mediator's reward ceremony.
- 5:44It elevates world history to sacred history.
- 5:46And it elevates our personal faith to our own.
- 5:48Salvation is not just a benefit to us, it is a gift presented to
- 5:52Christ. We the elect are the seed He
- 5:55sees. We are the prize he won.
- 5:56OK, so since this whole period is about Christ receiving his
- 5:59reward, Edwards pinpoints 4 specific interconnected outcomes
- 6:03that Christ laid the foundation for in his humiliation, which
- 6:05are now being actively fulfilled.
- 6:07These are the goals driving the engine of the third period.
- 6:09Let's start with the first one. It's a cosmic political victory,
- 6:13the overthrow of Satan's Kingdom.
- 6:15Christ's death was the legal sentence.
- 6:18This period is the execution. The time for affecting the
- 6:21overthrow is now. Edward sites Christ's statement
- 6:25just before the cross. Now is the judgement of this
- 6:28world. Now shall the Prince of this
- 6:30world be cast out? That is a staggering claim.
- 6:33It means that every time a nation turns toward
- 6:35Christianity, or a system of evil is dismantled, or a soul is
- 6:39freed from bondage, it's not an isolated event.
- 6:41No, it's the visible step by step unfolding of Satan's
- 6:45mandated expulsion from the Earth.
- 6:47The Cross earned the right to expel him.
- 6:49And history is simply the process of him being removed
- 6:52piece by piece. OK.
- 6:53What's the second design? The second concerns the
- 6:54systematic gathering of the people Christ purchased.
- 6:57The intent was to gather together in one all things in
- 7:00Christ. This gathering is the physical,
- 7:03worldwide manifestation of cross dominion.
- 7:06And he links this to two immensely significant scriptural
- 7:09anchors. First, Christ's own
- 7:11proclamation. And I, if I be lifted up, will
- 7:14draw all men unto me. The cross is the magnetic center
- 7:17of history. Right and 2nd Jacob's ancient
- 7:20prophecy of Shiloh to him should the gathering of the people be.
- 7:24So this gathering isn't accidental.
- 7:26It's a promised sign of the Messiah's reign, and it defines
- 7:30the missionary impulse of the this entire era.
- 7:32And that global inn gathering directly relates to the third
- 7:35design. The salvation of the elect
- 7:38having endured the cross, Christ is now made perfect in his role
- 7:43as the sovereign, authoritative Savior.
- 7:46This is where Hebrews 5 comes into play, right?
- 7:48Edwards uses it to show that Christ being made perfect, He
- 7:51became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that
- 7:54obey Him. The perfection achieved through
- 7:56His suffering now fully authorizes and enables him to
- 7:59apply that salvation, not just generally, but specifically and
- 8:02universally to those given to Him by the Father.
- 8:04Their work is done and now the benefits are distributed.
- 8:06And finally the 4th design. This is the one that encompasses
- 8:09all the others, the twin glory, glory to God and glory to the
- 8:12Saints. This entire period exists to
- 8:15magnify the Persons of the Trinity in the clearest way
- 8:18possible. It begins with the prayer of
- 8:20Christ Himself. Father, the hour has come.
- 8:24Glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee.
- 8:28So the history of the Church is therefore the visible answer to
- 8:31that prayer. And at the same time this glory
- 8:33is realized in the Saints. Christ possesses power over all
- 8:37flesh, so that He should give eternal life to as many as thou
- 8:40has given him. So these four designs, Satan's
- 8:44overthrow, the global gathering, the application of salvation,
- 8:46and the demonstration of divine glory, are the unified engine of
- 8:49history since the resurrection. And if you lose sight of that
- 8:52framework, history becomes. Bewildering mess of accidents.
- 8:55Yeah, but with Edwards's lens, it becomes the logical, active,
- 8:59unfolding realization of a covenant promise.
- 9:03And that really sets the stage for the terminology Scripture
- 9:05uses to describe this time, which is where we should go
- 9:08next. It's not enough to define this
- 9:10period by its purpose. We also have to define it by its
- 9:13duration and its status within God's overall plan.
- 9:17So Edwards looks at how Scripture itself labels this
- 9:19post resurrection period, and it reveals its distinct character
- 9:23as a time of fruition and finality.
- 9:26So what are some of those labels?
- 9:28Well, he observes that the Old Testament prophets consistently
- 9:31use terms like the latter days or the last days when they're
- 9:34referring to gospel times. And that terminology carries a
- 9:37lot of theological weight. It does.
- 9:41Why is this the last period? The rationale is structural.
- 9:45This period represents the last major movement in the series of
- 9:49God's Providence is on Earth. So it's the final period of the
- 9:52work of redemption. And critically, the last
- 9:55dispensation of the covenant of grace on Earth.
- 9:57That's a crucial point for understanding Reformed theology.
- 10:00Here. A dispensation is a distinct way
- 10:03God administers the single covenant of grace.
- 10:06Right there was the dispensation under the law, for example.
- 10:08But this evangelical dispensation, the one that
- 10:11begins with the Spirit's outpouring, is the final one.
- 10:13It signals that there won't be any new covenant, no new
- 10:16religious economy, until Christ returns.
- 10:18It provides the illogical stability.
- 10:20Everything is now set. The long chain of God's works of
- 10:23Providence from creation through patriarchs, through the law,
- 10:26through Christ's life is culminating right here.
- 10:29We are anticipating a new covenant or a new mechanism of
- 10:33grace. We are living under the final
- 10:35one. And therefore, everything that
- 10:38happens within this time is viewed as a final concluding
- 10:42action leading toward the full, glorious resolution.
- 10:45This leads to one of the most, I think, conceptually difficult
- 10:49but illuminating parts of Edwards framework.
- 10:52The New Testament refers to this entire span from the
- 10:55resurrection to the final judgement, using terms that
- 10:58suggest completion. It calls it the end of the
- 11:01world. The apostle says in Corinthians
- 11:03that the ends of the world are come on us.
- 11:06And the plural usage there is key.
- 11:08Edwards points out the ends of the world because this time is
- 11:11in a preparatory period but a finishing state.
- 11:14Things are being brought to their great end and issue.
- 11:17So the world is ending. But it's doing so by various
- 11:20steps and degrees. It's not a single instant of
- 11:22dissolution. It's a progressive historical
- 11:25dismantling of the temporary. That's it.
- 11:27So the end isn't just the literal burning up of the
- 11:30cosmos, it's the systematic removal of all temporary
- 11:33structures that previously mediated God's presence or rule.
- 11:37Edwards frames this whole process using the metaphor of
- 11:40shaking from Hagai's prophecy. Right, Heaven and earth shaking
- 11:43so that only those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
- 11:47Temporary structures are systematically removed to
- 11:49establish eternal ones and this historical shaking process it
- 11:54involves 5 specific endings or dissolutions.
- 11:57Just walk through those. What's the first shaking?
- 11:59The 1st, and maybe the most consequential for the early
- 12:03church was the end of carnal ordinances.
- 12:06OK, so the entire system of Old Covenant Jewish worship, the
- 12:10temple, the priesthood, the sacrifices, all those elaborate
- 12:12rituals that was terminated. Edward sees this abolition as
- 12:16the beginning of the eternal world on earth.
- 12:18Christ, the ultimate sacrifice and high priest.
- 12:21He rendered the typological ordinances obsolete.
- 12:23He quotes Craig's telling the Samaritan woman.
- 12:26Yes, the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this mountain
- 12:29nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
- 12:32Spiritual worship is established and that marks the end of the
- 12:35temporary religious structure. The second one follows pretty
- 12:38soon after, historically the end of literal Jerusalem in 7080.
- 12:43The physical temple and the political city were destroyed, a
- 12:46catastrophic historical event for the Jews, but theologically
- 12:50this event was essential. Why?
- 12:52Because it confirmed the finality of the first point, the
- 12:55outward physical location gave way to the spiritual temple and
- 12:58the spiritual city, the church, which Edward says are to last
- 13:03forever. It was a visible sign that God's
- 13:06institutional presence had shifted.
- 13:08It went from one ethnic location to a global spiritual entity.
- 13:12Irrevocably. The third major shaking is the
- 13:14end of the heathen empire. This happened during the time of
- 13:18Constantine, when the political structure of Pagan Rome, which
- 13:21had relentlessly persecuted the Church, was overthrown and
- 13:24replaced by a nominally Christian empire.
- 13:26And this wasn't just a political shift for him.
- 13:28Not at all. It was a cosmic 1 viewed through
- 13:30his the old heathen political structure which was actively
- 13:34aligned with Satan's Kingdom. It fell to make way for the
- 13:37empire of Christ, or at least the visible establishment of
- 13:40Christ's rule in the political realm of the known world.
- 13:43So it was a major step in that mandated overthrow of Satan.
- 13:46We talked about a. Huge step.
- 13:48OK, the 4th ending. This is one that Edwards viewed
- 13:51as still in the future, in his own time.
- 13:53Right, The fall of Antichrist, when this great oppositional
- 13:56power is finally destroyed, Satan's visible Kingdom on
- 14:00Earth. Whether you see that as the
- 14:01papacy or some future global tyranny, it ends definitively.
- 14:06This is the moment that establishes Christ's eternal
- 14:09global Kingdom in a truly visible way.
- 14:11Fulfilling Daniel's prophecy, the Kingdom and dominion under
- 14:15the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the Saints of
- 14:18the Most High. This is the point where the
- 14:21shaking of the temp temporal persecuting structures reaches
- 14:24its climax, setting up the Millennium.
- 14:26And then finally, the fifth step, the ultimate dissolution.
- 14:30The end of the physical frame. This is the literal final
- 14:33judgment. When the corruptible world
- 14:35concludes, the physical framework of time and space as
- 14:38we know it dissolves, allowing the Church to transition into
- 14:41its final, unshakeable dwelling place in the unshakeable
- 14:44heavens. So when scripture speaks of the
- 14:47ends of the world, we're really talking about this span of
- 14:49redemptive history characterized by the progressive, systematic
- 14:53termination of all temporary systems, religious, political
- 14:57and material, to make room for the eternal.
- 15:00That's the idea. So as the old world vanishes
- 15:03step by step through these shakings, Edwards emphasizes
- 15:06that the corresponding new state of things or the new world,
- 15:10which is a spiritual world, is beginning and setting up.
- 15:13It is this is the fulfillment of Isaiah's grand vision for behold
- 15:17I create new heavens and a new earth.
- 15:20So it's an immediate replacement dynamic, yes.
- 15:23The destruction of the literal Jerusalem was not a vacuum.
- 15:26It was immediately accompanied by the establishing of the
- 15:29spiritual Jerusalem, the global church.
- 15:31The end of the heathen empire brought the beginning of
- 15:34Christ's rule over the nations. So each historical ending of an
- 15:37old state initiates the beginning of a new and eternal
- 15:40state. And that transition continues
- 15:42until the final judgement. So the new heavens and new Earth
- 15:44aren't solely a future physical reality.
- 15:47No, there is spiritual and historical process that is
- 15:50already underway. Edwards connects this back to
- 15:53the very purpose of creation. God created the world to prepare
- 15:58a Kingdom for His Son, the heir of the world, which must remain
- 16:02eternally. Therefore, as Christ's Kingdom
- 16:04is established through these progressive dissolutions, the
- 16:07world is brought to its intended logical end, and the eternal
- 16:10state begins to overtake the temporary one.
- 16:13And he uses such a beautiful evocative analogy to close this
- 16:16point for river the river. He describes the long channel of
- 16:20Divine Providence, which has so many branches and so many
- 16:23windings, finally being emptied into their proper ocean, which
- 16:27they have been seeking from the beginning of their course, and
- 16:29so are come to their rest. That analogy perfectly
- 16:32encapsulates the feeling of the third period.
- 16:35It's the time when history, having completed its complex
- 16:38winding course, finally achieves its rest in the absolute
- 16:41dominion of Christ. And we are living in the waters
- 16:44slowing into that ocean. So this successful culminating
- 16:47state, this spiritual world that's replacing the temporal 1
- 16:51is what Scripture frequently calls the Kingdom of Heaven for
- 16:54the Kingdom of God. That's right, this state was
- 16:57eagerly anticipated by the Jews, who understood it through
- 17:00Daniel's prophecy that the God of heaven set up a Kingdom that
- 17:04would never be destroyed. And this is the evangelical
- 17:07state of things in the church and the world, where the success
- 17:10of Christ's redemption is visibly realized.
- 17:13But Edwards is quick to remind us that this is not an earthly
- 17:16political rule. Christ confirmed the spiritual
- 17:19nature of this rule when He said my Kingdom is not of this world.
- 17:23But it is undeniably a Kingdom. Oh.
- 17:25Yes, and it began immediately after the resurrection.
- 17:28And crucially, Edwards reminds us that the term Kingdom of
- 17:31Heaven itself has different degrees of application within
- 17:34the same period. That idea of degrees is vital.
- 17:38It refers to the initial spiritual state post
- 17:40resurrection, then the more perfect state after Antichrist's
- 17:43fall, the millennial age, and then the final perfect state of
- 17:46the Day of Judgement where even flesh and blood cannot inherit
- 17:49the Kingdom of God. So the Kingdom is one single
- 17:52reality, but it experiences successive, increasingly
- 17:56glorious manifestations throughout history.
- 17:59It is perpetually advancing. It never definitively retreats.
- 18:03OK, so to explain these progressive manifestations,
- 18:06Edwards identifies 4 key successive great events.
- 18:11Each one is described in Scripture as Christ's coming in
- 18:14his Kingdom. And they are not for separate,
- 18:16disconnected epochs. They're for distinct
- 18:19accomplishments or degrees of glory of the same great design.
- 18:22Let's walk through them, the first coming in his Kingdom.
- 18:25This occurred during the Apostolic Age and it culminated
- 18:28around 7080. Edwards interprets this as
- 18:31Christ appearing in wonderful dispensations, setting up his
- 18:34spiritual Kingdom by pouring out the Spirit and destroying his
- 18:37most immediate enemies. The persecuting Jewish state.
- 18:40Exactly scriptures like Matthew 16.28 where Christ promises that
- 18:44some standing there would not taste death till they saw the
- 18:46Son of man coming in his Kingdom.
- 18:48They find their fulfillment here.
- 18:49They do. The destruction of Jerusalem was
- 18:52viewed by many theologians, Edwards included, as a massive
- 18:55act of divine judgement, a type of the final judgement that
- 18:59ushered in the global gathering of the Gentiles.
- 19:02Now here's where a modern listener might pause Calling the
- 19:04destruction of Jerusalem a coming of Christ makes sense in
- 19:08terms of judgement. But what about the second
- 19:10coming? For Edwards, this is the
- 19:12destruction of the heathen Roman Empire.
- 19:14It happened during the time of Constantine and it effectively
- 19:17ended the official persecution of the Church.
- 19:20So how does he justify the continuity?
- 19:22Because both events involve Christ appearing in judgment to
- 19:25defeat the main historical opposition to the Church, he
- 19:29interprets Revelation 6 with all its imagery of the seals being
- 19:32opened in judgment falling as Christ coming to end paganism.
- 19:35It ended the power of the old heathen political structure.
- 19:39And established a visible church state in the known world, a
- 19:42massive step up from the small persecuted Church of the 1st
- 19:45century. The third coming is the 1 Edward
- 19:47saw as still future. The great destruction of
- 19:50Antichrist. This will be the most
- 19:52significant turning point since the resurrection itself, and
- 19:55it's intended to inaugurate that glorious period, referred to as
- 19:58the first resurrection in Revelation 20, the Millennial
- 20:01period. And finally, the forthcoming is
- 20:03the general physical judgement, the big one.
- 20:06The one that is the ultimate and most complete event, principally
- 20:09signified by all the others. Understanding this four part
- 20:12structure is so essential because it shows that God
- 20:15executes His judgement and advances His rule through these
- 20:19typologically related progressive His historical
- 20:22events, not just one isolated future moment.
- 20:25And that ability to connect 70AD, the fall of Rome, the
- 20:29destruction of Antichrist, and the final judgement under 1
- 20:32typological framework that shows a synthesis that few theologians
- 20:36can match. Edwards argues that the first 3
- 20:39comings are lively images or types of the 4th and.
- 20:41Last, like dramatic rehearsals. That concept is the beating
- 20:45heart of his historical theology, isn't it?
- 20:47It is just as the Old Testament Providence's typed Christ's
- 20:51suffering. The Providence is in this third
- 20:54period type, His glorious return to judgement.
- 20:58They share characteristics, but each is grander in scope.
- 21:02You can see this parallelism so clearly when you look at the
- 21:05concept of resurrection. Absolutely.
- 21:07The forthcoming is a literal physical resurrection, but each
- 21:11preceding historical coming is preceded by a spiritual
- 21:14resurrection. So let's take the first coming
- 21:17in 70 AD, that judgment on the Jewish state was preceded by.
- 21:21The glorious spiritual resurrection and the calling of
- 21:23the Gentiles. Multitudes who were spiritually
- 21:26dead were raised to new life globally through the gospel
- 21:29message preached by the apostles.
- 21:31It was a massive infusion of new spiritual life.
- 21:33And then Christ's coming in Constantine's time, the
- 21:36overthrow of paganism that involved another spiritual
- 21:38resurrection. Yes.
- 21:39In the restoration of the known world, the Church moved from
- 21:42hidden corners and catacombs into open, visible adherents.
- 21:46It moved the formerly Pagan world into a church state, a
- 21:49resurrection from heathen spiritual death to visible
- 21:51Christian life. And the third coming, the fall
- 21:54of Antichrist will be preceded by the greatest spiritual
- 21:58resurrection yet. The conversion of the nations
- 22:01and the restoration of the Church after its long period of
- 22:04being, as it were, dead under error and suppression, the
- 22:09spiritual revival, is always the precursor to the Glorious
- 22:12Judgement. They share several other
- 22:14characteristics as well. Each involves A glorious
- 22:16manifestation of Christ, and this glory is expressed
- 22:20simultaneously through severe judgements on enemies and great
- 22:23favor shown to the Church. The two sides of Christ's reign.
- 22:27The two sides of the coin. They are all attended by a
- 22:30spiritual gathering of the elect, A literal gathering from
- 22:33the four winds. But affected not by angels, as
- 22:36in the final judgement, but by the the trumpet of the gospel
- 22:40preached by ministers. And the opposition itself is
- 22:43typological. It is before the 1st coming the
- 22:45opposition was the persecuting Jews, before the 2nd the heven
- 22:49persecutors. Before the 3rd it's the great
- 22:51opposer Antichrist. And before the 4th, it will be
- 22:54the final opposition of Gog and Magog.
- 22:58Each coming brings certain deliverance for the Church and
- 23:01terrible destruction upon the wicked.
- 23:03And in each of these comings we see an ending of an old heaven
- 23:06and old earth, a temporal state of things being shaken, and a
- 23:09visible beginning of a new eternal state.
- 23:12Though the final perfect new heavens and new earth only
- 23:15arrive at the very end, the pattern is consistent.
- 23:18Sheikh, Judge. Redeem.
- 23:21Advance. So given this structure, it's so
- 23:23important to say again that these four events are not 4
- 23:26distinct successive kingdoms, no.
- 23:29There are simply several increasing degrees of the
- 23:31accomplishment of one event, the single Kingdom prophesied in
- 23:34Daniel. This concept of gradualism is
- 23:37paramount. The Kingdom is gradually
- 23:38prevailing and growing through these steps.
- 23:40The visible accomplishment in Constantine's time was greater
- 23:43than the first. Coming, the fall of Antichrist
- 23:45will be higher still, initiating A worldwide glory.
- 23:49And the end of the world will be the most perfect degree of all
- 23:51when all temporary elements are purged.
- 23:54This progressive structure solves a lot of interpretive
- 23:57challenges for biblical prophecy.
- 23:59It means that the sweeping universal language used by the
- 24:02prophets, like the widespread gathering of the elect or the
- 24:06overwhelming destruction of the enemies, can often refer to more
- 24:09than one of these steps. Because they're all images of
- 24:12the same progressive single reality.
- 24:14Exactly. This allows Edwards to apply
- 24:16passages like Matthew 24, which describes judgement and coming
- 24:20in part of the fall of Jerusalem, in part of the fall
- 24:23of Rome, and in part to the final judgement because they are
- 24:26all partial fulfillments or types of the one ultimate event.
- 24:30The prophecy is like a fractal image.
- 24:31It repeats its pattern in history.
- 24:34Way to put it. And finally, this framework
- 24:35gives active meaning to all the history that takes place between
- 24:38these 4 grand climactic steps. Yes, the great Providence is of
- 24:43God. Between these events, the rises
- 24:45and falls of nations, the intellectual struggles, the
- 24:47struggles and reforms within the church, they are themselves
- 24:51designed to make way for the Kingdom and glory of Christ in
- 24:54the great event following. So everything is calculated to
- 24:57prepare the way for the greater glory of Christ at the next
- 25:00manifestation. Every war, every revival, Edward
- 25:03sees it not as a standalone moment, but as God tilling the
- 25:07soil for the next great movement of the Kingdom.
- 25:10After establishing this this incredibly detailed structure of
- 25:14historical progression, Edwards addresses the natural and
- 25:17persistent question that inevitably comes up both from
- 25:21believers and skeptics. If Christ completed the
- 25:25difficult work on the cross, and if God's goal is to reward him
- 25:28by establishing his Kingdom, why should the setting up of that
- 25:32Kingdom be so incredibly gradual?
- 25:33God could easily have finished it at once.
- 25:35Exactly. And this is where he moves from
- 25:37historical observation to theological necessity.
- 25:41He responds to this inquiry with two main reasons that don't just
- 25:44excuse the gradual pace, but showcase the wisdom, patience,
- 25:48and supreme glory of God in this protracted process.
- 25:51So what's the first reason? The first one relates to the
- 25:54capacity of the creatures us. The gradual nature is not for
- 25:58God's benefit, but for ours. If the work were done quickly,
- 26:02we, the creatures, would not have the opportunity to perceive
- 26:06and observe the particular steps of divine wisdom.
- 26:09It's an issue of visibility and sort of processing speed.
- 26:12It is God determined to accomplish His design through a
- 26:15wonderful and long series of events.
- 26:18This extended time scale allows the glory of His perfection, His
- 26:22wisdom, justice, patience, sovereignty to be seen in
- 26:26successive observable manifestations.
- 26:28We get to watch the plan unfold over millennia rather than just
- 26:31catching a glimpse of a single instant.
- 26:34If the entire redemptive plan from creation to the new heaven
- 26:37and earth had been completed in a single human lifetime, the
- 26:40sheer volume of God's planning and execution would just
- 26:43overwhelm us. We wouldn't have time to connect
- 26:45the dots between the Old Testament type and the New
- 26:48Testament fulfillment. Or the historical judgement and
- 26:50the spiritual advance. Right.
- 26:52Furthermore, Edward suggests there's a limit to what our
- 26:55finite minds can even absorb. He speculates that if all that
- 26:59glory had been manifested at once, it would have been too
- 27:02much for us. It would have overpowered our
- 27:04sight and capacities. So the gradual nature is an act
- 27:07of grace. It's a divine pedagogy, allowing
- 27:10us to process the magnitude of God's redemptive plan
- 27:13incrementally in historical sequence.
- 27:16It allows the Church, across ages and generations, to witness
- 27:20the continuous, active nature of God's covenant keeping.
- 27:24One generation sees the destruction of the carnal
- 27:26ordinances. Another sees the fall of Rome.
- 27:29Another anticipates the fall of Antichrist.
- 27:31Each generation gets its own lesson in divine fidelity.
- 27:35OK, that's the first reason. What's the second?
- 27:37The second reason is maybe the most traumatic and theologically
- 27:40satisfying. It has to do with the nature of
- 27:42Christ public triumph over Satan.
- 27:44OK, if God's goal was just efficiency, he could have
- 27:47crushed Satan immediately with an act of almighty power the
- 27:50moment Christ rose. But that would be a victory by
- 27:52sheer instant force. A sledgehammer victory.
- 27:55Exactly. Edwards argues that God's plan
- 27:58is designed to maximize the glory of the triumph.
- 28:01Therefore God allows Satan large opportunity to ply his utmost
- 28:05power and subtlety again and again, to strengthen his own
- 28:09interest all that he can by the work of many ages.
- 28:12So Satan is granted centuries to deploy his absolute deepest
- 28:16machinations, his antichrists, his false gospels, his political
- 28:21tyranny, his efforts to oppress and confuse the church.
- 28:24He is allowed to play his full hand.
- 28:25Knowing he is building a sandcastle that will inevitably
- 28:28be washed away. The result is a victory that is
- 28:31far more spectacular and complete.
- 28:33By allowing Satan to exhaust his entire repertoire over 2000
- 28:36years, God defeats him in a clear, systematic, and highly
- 28:40publicized manner. Edwards says God sets up
- 28:42Christ's Kingdom time after time in spite of all his stable
- 28:45machination and great works. This means the long war actually
- 28:49serves to magnify the mediators wisdom and reign every single
- 28:52step. The demise of Pagan Rome, the
- 28:54future fall of the great opposer, is designed to
- 28:56dismantle Satan's Kingdom publicly and thoroughly, making
- 28:59the final global victory that much more resounding.
- 29:02It turns history into a the stage for the perfect
- 29:04demonstration of Christ superiority.
- 29:07And by every successive step 70 AD Constantine Antichrist fall
- 29:11in the final judgement. God advances Christ Kingdom
- 29:15still higher and higher. It is a slow, methodical,
- 29:19crushing advance, till at length it is fully set up and Satan
- 29:23perfectly and eternally vanquished.
- 29:25The gradual pace is the theological prerequisite for the
- 29:29glorious demonstration of enduring wisdom.
- 29:31That's it. This gives us not only patience
- 29:33for the slowness of history, but a real confidence in its
- 29:36direction. We are watching the
- 29:38demonstration of victory. This deep dive has allowed us to
- 29:41look at the third period of redemption, the time we are
- 29:43currently living in, not as a random sequence of events, but
- 29:46as God's logical, structured plan for securing the necessary
- 29:49rewards of the cross. We've established that
- 29:52definitive theological shift, the distinction between
- 29:55preparation and harvest. We've understood the systemic
- 29:58sequence of the ends of the world where temporary things,
- 30:01religious, political and physical, are shaken off to
- 30:04establish the eternal. And we analyzed the wisdom
- 30:07displayed in the gradual typological advancement of the
- 30:10Kingdom of heaven through those 4 distinct yet interconnected
- 30:14historical comings of Christ in judgment and glory.
- 30:18This powerful framework gives shape and meaning to everything
- 30:21happening now, from global missions to political struggles.
- 30:25It clarifies that our current time is one of the provinces
- 30:28specifically designed to make way for the next greater
- 30:31manifestation of Christ's glory. We are active participants in
- 30:34the long, glorious reward ceremony of the mediator.
- 30:37We are. So as you look at the world,
- 30:39consider this. If the purpose of history is to
- 30:42demonstrate the complete and glorious defeat of Satan through
- 30:45a long series of events designed to showcase divine wisdom, what
- 30:49is 1 seemingly small victory in your life or in your local
- 30:52congregation that reflects this pattern?
- 30:54The pattern of God overcoming evil, not instantly but
- 30:57incrementally, through means that glorify his patients and
- 31:01demonstrate the certain stepwise advance of Christ's rule.
