- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Isaiah chapter 22 and we've been looking at
- 0:21some various prophecies that happened around like 757 hundred
- 0:29BC. And as Isaiah is a preacher from
- 0:35Yahweh, from the Lord and he has seen incredible wickedness that
- 0:40is happening all around in the world around him, but especially
- 0:44in his people in his nation in the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 0:49And so he now in chapter 22, after prophesying against all of
- 0:55the surrounding nations and their wickedness, now he draws
- 0:59his attention back to Judah itself, and he calls it the
- 1:03Valley of vision. And we read this in chapter 22
- 1:07and verse #1A pronouncement concerning the Valley of vision.
- 1:11What's the matter with you? Why have all of you gone up to
- 1:15the rooftops? The noisy city, the jubilant
- 1:18town is filled with celebration. Your dad did not die by the
- 1:23sword. They were not killed in battle.
- 1:25All your rulers have fled together, captured without a
- 1:28bow. All your fugitives were captured
- 1:31together. They had fled far away.
- 1:34So here there had been a deliverance that God had given
- 1:39to Judah that had not come as a result of Judah's greatness, but
- 1:46instead he came by the hand of God.
- 1:51Some of the rulers fearing what could happen in the fight, they
- 1:55ran away, but then they were captured as a result of them
- 1:58fleeing. And so now the people are like
- 2:01partying and celebrating as a result of this victory that was
- 2:04won. But Isaiah is broken hearted
- 2:07because they are celebrating when they should be repenting of
- 2:11their sins and their evils. This is what he says in verse #4
- 2:15Therefore I said, look away from me, let me weep bitterly.
- 2:19Do not try to comfort me about the destruction of my dear
- 2:23people. For Adonai Yahweh of Heaven's
- 2:26armies had a day of tumult, trampling and confusion in the
- 2:31valley of vision, people shouting and crying to the
- 2:34mountains. Elam took up a quiver with
- 2:37Chariots and horsemen, and Kiir uncovered the shield.
- 2:40So these are representatives from the Assyrian army.
- 2:43Verse #7 Your best valleys were full of Chariots, and horsemen
- 2:47were positioned at the city gates.
- 2:49He removed the defenses of Judah on that day.
- 2:53You look to the weapons in the House of the forest.
- 2:55This was a large wooden building that house a lot of weaponry.
- 3:00You saw that there were many breaches in the walls of the
- 3:03City of David. You collected water from the
- 3:05lower pool. You counted the houses of
- 3:08Jerusalem so that you could tear them down to fortify the wall.
- 3:11You made a reservoir between the walls for the water of the
- 3:15ancient pool, but you did not look to the one who made it or
- 3:19consider the one who created it long ago.
- 3:21So here within this fight, there is reliance on the old buildings
- 3:27that they tore down some of them and took the stones and
- 3:30everything to fortify up the wall.
- 3:32That way there wouldn't be the cracks or the broken areas in
- 3:35it. They were trying to make sure
- 3:38that they had enough water. You can read about that at
- 3:41length in Second Kings and the pool that Hezekiah found and all
- 3:45of that. So they were really focused on
- 3:49the physical. But here Isaiah says you didn't
- 3:52look to the one who created Jerusalem.
- 3:55You didn't consider the one who created it long ago.
- 3:59They were so focused on fixing the physical problems that they
- 4:04had no care for the spiritual problems that caused all of this
- 4:09to occur. Can I ask you today, are you
- 4:12aware that yes, we encounter physical things in our lives
- 4:15that need working on? I can't just say, you know,
- 4:20every morning when I get up, oh, I'm, I'm just going to consider
- 4:24the Lord and I'm never going to shower.
- 4:26I'm never going to put on new clothes.
- 4:28I'm never going to eat food. That would be a quick and easy
- 4:32way for me to die within, you know, week, two weeks.
- 4:37I don't know how long you can last without water.
- 4:40But if I had no care for the physical, I would die.
- 4:43And that's not what God has for us.
- 4:45We are not simply spiritual beings.
- 4:48We are physical beings with a spirit, with a soul.
- 4:52And so as a result, we need to care about both.
- 4:55Yes, the physical, you know, fill in the wall, but hear what
- 4:58God says is you didn't consider me as you were going through
- 5:03this battle. And yes, God here in this moment
- 5:05provided some victory, provided some safety for some of the
- 5:08people, but he says you are missing out on the most
- 5:15important aspect of your life, which is your relationship with
- 5:18me. Can I encourage you as you are
- 5:20getting ready for work, pray to the Lord, ask for Him to guide
- 5:24you, ask for His direction. Ask for skill in what you do at
- 5:29your job so that you can do it well, so that you can be a good
- 5:33witness for the Lord even there within your workplace.
- 5:37As you are maybe heading back home from work, pray over your
- 5:44family, your spouse, your kids, your grandkids.
- 5:48Pray over your neighbors and your interactions with them.
- 5:51Don't allow the physical things to drown out the spiritual
- 5:56reality, because at the end of the day, if you could only focus
- 6:01on the spiritual or only focus on the physical, only focusing
- 6:05on the spiritual, you would still live eternally.
- 6:10If you just focus on the physical, you can lose out in so
- 6:14much of your life. And this is what we read here.
- 6:17Let me continue reading now in verses 12 through 14.
- 6:20On that day, Yahweh Adonai of Heaven's armies called for
- 6:25weeping, for wailing, for shaving heads and for the
- 6:28wearing of sackcloth. But look, joy and gladness,
- 6:32butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep and goats,
- 6:34eating of meat and drinking of wine and hearing quotations.
- 6:38Let's eat and drink for tomorrow we die.
- 6:41There's just this hedonism, this fatalism that says, well, we're
- 6:45going to die, and so let's just party it up until we pass.
- 6:50And Isaiah says in verse 14, Yahweh of heaven's armies has
- 6:53directly revealed to me, this iniquity will not be wiped out
- 6:58for you people as long as you live.
- 7:01Yahweh had an eye of heaven's armies has spoken here.
- 7:06What God tells Isaiah is what is broken in this people right now
- 7:11with their sin. It is not going to go away while
- 7:15they are within this land of promise.
- 7:18They needed to go into exile with Babylon, and it was only
- 7:24after that that eventually they would turn from their idolatry.
- 7:29Now they had many other sins. You can look at, you know,
- 7:33Matthew's Gospel all the way through the book of Acts, and
- 7:36you can see the various ways in which Israel was still sinning.
- 7:40They were still wicked. They were not perfect, but they
- 7:44turn from some of these particular steps of wickedness
- 7:47that they had been taking for hundreds of years.
- 7:51And I think in my life and in yours of the times when God will
- 7:55sometimes discipline us, He will correct us and it will feel as
- 8:00though we are being punished or that part of us is being ripped
- 8:07away. But that's not the way that God
- 8:10views it. He says, I am looking after you
- 8:14and I want to remove sin from your life.
- 8:17And sometimes that's painful when we so tightly and so
- 8:22closely hold sin to ourselves that to remove the sin feels
- 8:26like we are losing ourselves. And hear God says in order for
- 8:32Judah, in order for Israel to actually experience the life in
- 8:37the future that I have for them, they have to go because they
- 8:42will not change if everything stays the same as it is right
- 8:46now. Can I ask, will you have that
- 8:48prayer to the Lord to say God, even if it changes some of who I
- 8:54am and how I feel and and how I interact?
- 8:58God, I want to walk with you. So God, remove what you need to
- 9:03remove, change what you need to change in me, switch up my
- 9:06circumstances so that I will follow you more wholeheartedly.
- 9:12So that's the prophecy against Judah and specifically against
- 9:17Jerusalem. Then there's kind of an
- 9:19interesting portion. I I mentioned this last episode,
- 9:23then God has something to say about one particular person, one
- 9:27particular ruler within Jerusalem during this time.
- 9:31He says in verse #15 Yahweh out an eye of heaven's armies, said,
- 9:35go to Shebna, that steward who is in charge of the palace, and
- 9:40say to him, What are you doing here?
- 9:42Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here?
- 9:46Carving your tomb on the height and cutting a resting place for
- 9:50yourself out of rock? Look, you strong, wrong man.
- 9:54Yahweh is about to shake you violently.
- 9:56He will take hold of you, wind you up into a ball and sling you
- 10:00into a wide land. There you will die, and there
- 10:03your glorious Chariots will be a disgrace to the House of your
- 10:07Lord. I will remove you from your
- 10:09office. You will be ousted from your
- 10:12position. So here there's this guy Shebna
- 10:16in charge of the palace there in Jerusalem.
- 10:19And during a time where there should have been like weeping,
- 10:23sorrow, repentance, he instead is just building up this giant
- 10:29gaudy location for him, for him to be buried.
- 10:35And I wonder how many times we are simply focused on ourselves
- 10:39when we should be focused on spiritual matters, when maybe we
- 10:42should be the people that are repenting, that are guiding
- 10:46others in, in prayer or in walking with the Lord.
- 10:49And instead we're too busy having leisurely things, maybe
- 10:54only worrying about our own finances and and things like
- 10:59that. I don't want to be like Shebna.
- 11:03I don't just want to focus on me.
- 11:05I want to focus on what the Lord has and hear God says as a
- 11:10result of your selfishness and self centeredness, I am going to
- 11:14remove you from your position. And instead of being buried here
- 11:18in this elaborate tomb that you've made in Jerusalem, I'm
- 11:22going to he says, what's that in verse number 17?
- 11:27He'll take hold of you, wind you up into a ball and sling you
- 11:31into a wide land. The God here throws this
- 11:34fastball and he says, Shebna, you are going to a different
- 11:39place. You're not going to die here in
- 11:41Jerusalem and be buried in extravagant honor.
- 11:46Instead you are going to be a disgrace to those that know you.
- 11:53Then verse #20 God doesn't just say here's what's going to
- 11:56happen to Shebna. He says I have someone that is
- 11:59going to take his place. He says on that day I will call
- 12:03for my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah.
- 12:07I want to be called a servant of God.
- 12:10I want to be one that God would say this one is my servant and I
- 12:14call on him to do the work that I have for him.
- 12:17He says I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash
- 12:22around him. I will hand your authority over
- 12:24to him and he'll be like a father to the inhabitants of
- 12:28Jerusalem and the House of Judah.
- 12:30I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder
- 12:34when he opens, no one can close. What he closes, no one can open.
- 12:40So here like him is one that is going to be what Shebna should
- 12:46have been. He's going to care for people,
- 12:48going to be like a father to them.
- 12:50He is going to take care of the House of David, which would be
- 12:55the the kingly lineage that they're the kings are that
- 12:59Shebna should have been caring for the king, but instead he was
- 13:02only caring about himself. And so I love in verse #22 the
- 13:07apostle John actually takes this quote about Eliakim, about this
- 13:13one from the House of David. And he applies it ultimately to
- 13:17Jesus. And that Jesus is the one who
- 13:20opens the door of eternal life that no one can shut, and he
- 13:24shuts the door of eternity that no one can open.
- 13:29Verse #23 I will drive him like a peg into a firm place.
- 13:34He will be a throne of honor for his Father's family, unlike
- 13:38Shebna, who would be a disgrace. Verse #24 They will hang on Him
- 13:43all the glory of His father's family, the descendants in the
- 13:47offshoots, all the small vessels, from bowls to every
- 13:50kind of jar. On that day the declaration of
- 13:53Yahweh of heaven's armies, the peg that was driven into a firm
- 13:57place will give way, be cut off and fall, and the load on it
- 14:02will be destroyed. Indeed, Yahweh has spoken.
- 14:06So even with Eliakim being one that is God's servant, there was
- 14:11still coming that judgement Day. And when that judgement Day
- 14:14came, even Eliakim himself would fall that the greatness of the
- 14:21House of David, it would undergo A transitory period.
- 14:26And certainly we know Israel would not get its former glory
- 14:30for many more years after that. And certainly from the House of
- 14:34David, you have one guy at the end of the exile, and we can
- 14:41read about that in, I forget if it's Haggai or Zechariah, I'll
- 14:46look that up later. But you have one descendant of
- 14:49David that's there that's kind of leading during that time.
- 14:52But then ultimately, obviously Jesus is this one.
- 14:57What to kind of take from this? Have humility, not pride.
- 15:01Repent of our sins. Be spiritually aware of what is
- 15:05happening. Care for your spiritual self
- 15:08even as you do the physical tasks.
- 15:11Pray to the Lord, Call on Him, Seek His guidance.
- 15:14Seek to do what He wants you to do in His way and in His time.
- 15:20Realize that it's not all about you and seek to be one that
- 15:23would be known as a servant of the Lord doing what God has
- 15:26called you to do because there is no greater purpose in your
- 15:30life or in mine than to follow the Lord and to follow His way.
- 15:36Thank you for tuning in today. And I'm looking forward to a
- 15:41very closely here. We're going to get into what's
- 15:44called Isaiah's little apocalypse.
- 15:46And so we're going to see, as Isaiah describes, kind of the
- 15:49end of this current age and what the Lord has planned, the
- 15:54ultimate judgments that will come on humanity for their
- 15:56wickedness, but then what God will do and how God will rescue
- 16:01and restore what sin broke. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 16:04Have a wonderful day.
