- 0:14SPEAKER_00: It is a beautiful skincare line.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I want to without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Ricardo and Pillar Pintero.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Uh so welcome to the show, guys.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm so excited you're here.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And oh, I forgot to mention the line is called care skincare.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So welcome to the show.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Etka.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Thank you for inviting us.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's my honor and I absolutely love your line.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It's so beautiful, it's so chic.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I just I can't wait to learn all about it.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And I I want to start by um really talking about you guys and your journey and your background.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: So maybe Pilar, you can get us started.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Um, well, I want to thank you first for giving us this space.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it's important for us to talk about our brand and to talk about uh, you know, care.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, Ricardo and I uh have been married now for 30 years.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Um I'm born and raised in Mexico City.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: My mother is American and my father is Mexican, and that's where I met Ricardo.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: He was also born and raised in Mexico, where his parents uh were Cuban immigrants.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: And we met, we fell in love, uh, we got married, uh, and um we had our first child uh a year after we got married.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: After that, a year and a half later, we had our second daughter, and then three years later we had our third uh uh child, which is our you know our oldest son.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: And then uh Ricardo was working with uh the beauty industry, uh with a beauty uh he was in the beauty business, and we were uh transferred to South Korea.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: So we packed up the kids, uh packed up the family, and we moved to South Korea.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And as you can imagine, uh, busy with kids and family and work.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: We lived there for a few years, and then we were again uh transferred, or he was transferred to um to the United States, and that's where you know we also packed up again and we moved to the US and we are now in Connecticut.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: So we have been here uh for a while, and we arrived and we had our fourth child uh when we got here.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: So oh my goodness, so many blessings.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: I love it, I love that.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: So many blessings.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: So our you know, the ranges are from uh 28 to 12 years old, and uh it's been uh a wonderful and very blessed life and very fulfilling with uh you know the children and with a family.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, four years ago uh we made a very important you know, life uh decision of Ricardo uh leaving the corporate world.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: And at that moment, we decided that we wanted to start our own business.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: We wanted to become entrepreneurs, and that was you know one of the best decisions we have made.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: It has given Ricardo the opportunity to be here with the family because as you can imagine, um, he was you know on that hamster wheel traveling constantly, you know, commuting.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I can imagine, yeah.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I was busy with the children and it was just you know a lot going on.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: So to you know, finally come together and have that time for the both of us to be together with the family and to be able to build the business together was really a blessing.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: So that's where you know our journey led us.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And Ricardo, I would love to follow up by asking you.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, how was South Korea?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: You know, how was uh going there and adapting and all that?
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Well, it was absolutely wonderful.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: I, you know, it's I think at some point these podcasts, there's gonna be some sort of like subtitle or some commentary.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Like when Pilar was this describing, you know, the children and everything, it was, you know, the subtitle would be busy mom, extremely busy mom.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Oh yes, because you know it's a full-time, a full-time job.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: And you know, she was you know taking care of the kids.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: I was uh you know working and traveling a lot, but to ask your question, South Korea was amazing.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: It was one of the the you know, in your life, there will be events and things that change your life forever.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: And for us to move, you know, with our young kids to South Korea was just incredible, a completely a radically different culture in so many ways.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, we were in Mexico, so can you imagine?
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: You know, I got a call from the the former CEO at the time, and he said, Ricardo, you know, we want to send you to Korea.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: And I said, Are you up for that?
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: I said, I I have to talk to my wife, you know.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: But off the first bounce, absolutely.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Um, and you know, South Korea is just an incredible place.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: We loved the culture, we loved the people.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: It it was just uh such admiration that we we you know, we we we learned so much of their journey as a country, everything they've been through, and we just have tremendous respect and admiration for for you know all things Korean.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: So that was wonderful.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: And then I got I got transferred, I got another call, and we want you to come to New York, which was incredible.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: And you know, I worked for an amazing company of Yesterday Lauder Companies, and I had nothing but gratitude, um, nothing but just appreciation for everything the company did for me and my family, you know, to the water family, to all the friends, all the mentors uh that I encountered.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: And I was blessed because you know it's it's not always easy to fit within a corporation, a big corporation, and find you know, people that will help you, will look out for your best interest, will develop you, will mentor you, will give you opportunities to really expand and and you know gain more responsibility and expand as a professional.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: So I am just extremely grateful uh, you know, to this day.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: And I made some great friends uh day.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: So it it's all good, you know, it's absolutely all good.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: I really love that.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: You know, I I've heard amazing, nothing of amazing things about Estee Lauder and you know the beauty industry as a whole, you know, I've noticed just from starting this podcast, uh it's a lot of really nice people, you know, like there's a lot of um people who are very caring and very giving in this industry.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: So I I I love that you said that.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And I I want to actually shift focus and talk about the brand because it's such a it's such a nice brand.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And it, you know, the whole experience I've had using it, I've absolutely loved.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: So I want to talk about, you know, what really inspired you guys to go towards skincare and you know, um, what's what was the journey behind all of that?
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Well, uh, thank you.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'll let Pilar talk more in detail about the brand, but I just want to preface it by building on what you just said about the industry.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: You know, all the time that I have been involved, and I think Pilata will definitely shares this, is that this industry is an industry that really works for the well-being of others.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: I I you know, I could probably never be in a in a business that sold, you know, the proverbial widgets or something that really didn't make a difference, something that was very transactional.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: You know, the products that are in the beauty industry, whether it's uh a moisturizer or whether it's a lipstick, these are products that are bought with emotion.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that makes this beautiful industry so unique because you know, when you're buying something with emotion, it means so much more.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: You're buying a lipstick, it's so much more than whatever tint you're putting on your lips.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: It's how it makes you feel.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: We're in a business that helps people feel better about themselves, look better, feel better about themselves.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: And we are convinced that if somebody feels good about themselves, they're gonna be better to themselves, to their family, to their friends, to their community, to the world at large.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: So there's there's a there's a sort of like a philosophical motivation to be in the industry and to contribute in a way that is very caring.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: And that is, you know, that's one of the reasons why the brand is called care.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: So I'll let Pilar talk about that because it's a critical story.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so to continue uh with Ricardo's um you know story of the brand, um, the reason we decided to name it care was to his point in being uh products that we're caring.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Um you think about the word care, it's so obvious when you talk about skincare, you know, you're caring for your skin.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Um care it represents more than just a behavior, it also represents an emotion.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: So when you buy skincare, you're bringing it into your home into one of the most vulnerable places of your home, which is your bathroom.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: And be very um, you know, what's you're very vulnerable when you're looking at yourself in the mirror, we tend to be very self-critical, right?
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: We find all our, you know, uh all our good things and bad things that we have in our whether it's on our skin, whether it's you know, on our person.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And this um, you know, the brand, the the way we wanted to create it was for it to be only about the product and making you feel good, not about creating these beauty standards that we are, you know, fed constantly that just make us doubt who we are and not see who we need to be.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: And you know, when I go into my bathroom and I go in the morning and at night and I'm gonna apply my skincare, just to go in and see my bottles and my jars that say care are just such a calming and refreshing uh feeling that it just reminds me that I need to care about myself and I need to care about others around me, that I need to care about my environment, that I need to care about everything that's happening.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: So it's more of a, you know, of an emotion more than a behavior.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, you know, Pilar, and I don't want to interrupt you, but I really want to say this to everyone listening.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: You know, your brand, I love the name because it's not just it's care, and then you put a period at the end of it.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And you know what that made me think of the first time I saw it was, you know, it's almost like Nike's um just do it kind of thing.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And I looked at that and I was like, care, yeah, like just care about people, you know what I mean?
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Care about yourself, care about things, like care the idea and the concept, you know, going back to Ricardo's point about almost a philosophical, you know, this philosophical undertone to things in the beauty industry.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: It's very, very true.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: And I think your brand truly shines in that because it makes you realize, like, no, you have to stop and you have to care about yourself and your skin and your overall well-being.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: And that is so like I think that's just such a well thought out name, you know.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: So I just I had to comment on that.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Ekdev.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: You know, I I love that you notice the period and the period is there intentionally, and it really that period is your beauty mark.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: We all are beautiful, we all have that beauty mark in us, and we tend to forget, we tend to we tend to forget that we are beautiful, that we are, you know, you know, our are we need to live to be our the best version of us all the time, without you know, worrying about what others are gonna say, what others are gonna see.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just it's about us.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: And if we feel good with us, with the way we we look, with the way we feel, then we transmit this all day, right?
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Whenever you whenever you are with your loved ones, with your kids, with your husband.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: It's just a constant uh, you know, giving back.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like good vibes.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: You know, when you approach the world with this positive attitude and this like self-love, then yeah, you're absolutely right, Bilar.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Like we, you know, we have this normal tendency as human beings to like just give that out, you know.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: So I completely, completely agree with you.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I actually want to share a short story um with you guys because um the brand already has a very special place in my heart because um, you know, just the other day, well, you know, a couple days ago, I was in a situation.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I I'm in the medical field and I'm at the hospital quite a bit, and I had a meeting, you know, it's a it was a very last meeting that last minute meeting that came up, and I was feeling terrible, you know.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And I I had been on call.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I felt just terrible about, you know, like myself.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I felt sweaty, gross, like I just didn't feel like meeting anybody, you know what I mean?
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And I remember um I remembered that I had put some of your uh the the towelettes, the the missler uh water and the toner toilets in my in my bag and I used them and I felt so much more confident by just something as simple as cleaning off my face, you know what I mean, and putting a fresh like face on almost for this meeting.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: And it just made me feel better to know that I took care of myself and I put myself in a place where I, you know, I felt better in general before I walked into this meeting.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: So it definitely impacted me, you know, on that day in a very personal way.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: So I just want to say thank you for that because you guys really, you know, your products came in so clutch for me on that day, and I'll never forget it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: So I just wanted to share that.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for sharing that story.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's very meaningful.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And I'll tell you, one of the favorite parts of my day is you know, we're a small business and we're we're very close to our customer.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: And one of the favorite parts of my day is to looking at customer comments, customer ratings and reviews.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: And I have to tell you, every day, it's at least one, I get a little sunshine with stories like the one you just shared, with customers coming back saying how the products are working for them, how they feel better about themselves, how their friends are noticing, how their husband noticed.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just this is what really keeps us so motivated because people are really seeing that emotional benefit when using the product.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: So thank you for sharing that.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: And it sort of builds on what we already enjoy every day with these little uh little uh notes of sunshine.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, I want to actually uh take the conversation further and talk about some of the formulations because it is a phenomenal brand.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, my skin has been loving it.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Um, the products are so beautiful in the in ways that like they absorb very quickly.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: It's a very nice feeling, you know, just using the product.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: So I want to talk to you guys about the process of um, you know, formulating uh the first few products that you came out with, and you know, what was that whole journey like?
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And you know, what were some of the hurdles, some of the good good stories, you know, all that good stuff.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: So um one of the the things that I want to clarify for everybody in your audience and for you, of course, is you know, I am not a product development expert.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Pilat is a product expert because she has been, you know, a very discerning consumer, and she knows about you know what she likes, what she doesn't like.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, she's a very discerning consumer, but the products were formulated by an amazing friend and former colleague from Clinique.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Her name is Debbie Dequino, and she was you know VP of product development, and you know, she she retired.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: And when Pilar and I started talking about launching our own skincare line, you know, I recognized, I don't know about product formulation, but I reached out to Debbie and I said, Debbie, we're thinking about doing this.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: Would you come and help us?
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: She said, absolutely.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: So the products were developed by Debbie, who has, you know, some of the some of the greatest hits in the business were created by her.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Um and she is a real expert that knows about you know skin, knows about product formulation, about ingredients, about technology.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: She is very well connected with the you know cosmetic chemist product development community.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: So the goal was when we spoke to her, is we said we want to create products that can give us the best technology available with the safest ingredients that we that we can be available to us.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: And we want to create a line that simplifies skincare, simplifies and declutters the messaging.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Because one of the things I'll let Pilar you know explain this a little bit more, but what she's going to tell you is something that I heard traveling around the US and around the world, there is a consistency in what we found to be our insight and our white space for launching this line.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: It's something that you know we all a lot of us go through where we um have so many skincare products.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I'm sure you have a lot of them, and you've tried a lot of them.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And we are, you know, when you are trying to figure out what your skin really needs, you tend to um, you know, buy a lot of products, you tend to test them.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Some of them work, some of them don't, some of them have beautiful textures, some of them just don't feel right.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: And it's, you know, an expensive uh way to try products and figure out if they're working.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: So we wanted to create really a line where we had the products that your skin really needs to be healthy, um, without, you know, any marketing, um, you know, I'm sorry to say it, but no marketing BS, but really talking about what your skin needs, which is you know, you need to cleanse, you need to moisturize, you need to protect, and you need to repair.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: And taking those uh, you know, four standards of what you need for a good skincare routine, we created the line.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: So, like Ricardo said, we reached out to Debbie, and oh my gosh, she is amazing uh in her craft, and she is so knowledgeable and um you know has so much uh you know information and in ingredients and formulation that we were able to you know uh find a contract manufacturer that could create these products for us, and then with Debbie and you know the the lab be able to formulate each one of the products.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Now, I must tell you that this is an important distinction because you know we've seen so many brands, and and by the way, you know, we are we're becoming entrepreneurs later in life.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah and and I think that's that's like a complete story in itself because you know, I have so many friends and people that are in my age group and with a similar journey than Pilar's and and and and mine, and they're they're concerned, you know, they're like they're they're they're tired, they're worn out, they're burnt out, and they're thinking, you know, why, you know, what what's gonna happen?
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: When am I gonna retire?
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: What's gonna happen later?
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And you know, what we're discovering is that you can become an entrepreneur today, at any age, and this is something that's available to everybody.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: And one of the reasons we wanted to launch this business the way we did is that you know, I learned a lot, like I'm always learning, but I learned a lot of the big transformation that has happened, you know, with technology.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: But really the thing that really accelerated everything was the introduction of the iPhone.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the iPhone came in, it really changed so many of our behaviors.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: And the minute that that you could you could, you know, they digitized payments that now you could pay um, you know, from your phone, that was the beginning of this acceleration of e-commerce.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: I remember giving a presentation many years ago talking about e-commerce, and you know, we had a very interesting statistic.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: It said, you know, in the early days of e-commerce, we said, what do you I would I would ask the group, you know, what do you think was the peak hour when people would shop online?
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: You know, people would have their, it was, it was lunchtime.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: And the reason was people had their computers were at work, you know, they'd grab a sandwich or something, a salad, and they were shopping during lunchtime.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Then you have the increase in penetration of desktops and and and laptops at home, and then you're starting to see a shift of people, yeah, still shopping during lunchtime, but shopping at night, you know, after they put the kids to dinner, shopping at night.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: But all of this changed dramatically when the iPhone comes in and now everything is mobile.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: And you know, and the websites had now this idea of mobile first, and they adapted.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Because if you remember the early days of you know, use your phone, and no website worked well because it wasn't designed for a mobile.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like the flip phones.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: So so so I think this this aspect really changed the way people discover brands.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Changed the way people shop.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: And, you know, with COVID, I mean, COVID has been terrible.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't want to get into that, but what COVID did, it really accelerated so many of these trends that were already there.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: And people are now very comfortable, you know, discovering brands and shopping brands online.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: So one of the things that Pilate and I, as a design tenant, if you will, when we launched our business, you know, our office is our kitchen table.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: And I know this sounds very folksy, but like we don't intend to go back into a big office and have a hierarchy.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: This is, you know, our business was designed so that we could manage our business from our iPhone.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: Everything was reverse engineered to be able to do that.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: So we were very lucky that, you know, with COVID, we were prepared because we had actually thought about the name of the company is called Digital Brands, because everything we do is digital.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: And when we launched the brand, we said, okay, we want to make sure that everything that happens happens, you know, is mobile first, all these good things.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: But we wanted to leverage the billions of dollars that have been invested in all this infrastructure that is available to everybody.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: We work with Shopify, which is an amazing platform that solves one of the pain points of e-commerce, which is the payment processing.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: They have amazing technology there.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: So, you know, if this is my public service announcement for your podcast, is if you're thinking about launching a business, if you are whatever stage of your life you're in, but you have that desire to be an entrepreneur and participate and take advantage of all this, do it.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: And and you know, if you have any questions, Pilat and I will help you.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love that.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: No, I I completely agree with you.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And you have made such a great point, Ricardo, because you know, you're right.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Everything can be done from the phone and also like the accessibility, right?
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, it's it's completely changed how accessible products are to people and how we can, you know, it's almost like creating so many more options, you know, the way that technology has gone and the way it is now.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, I can get on my phone, like you said, you know, go to any website, but also more importantly, you the process of buying something, the, you know, like the steps that it took before, it's just been more simplified.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: And I think that is absolutely huge and definitely something that you know, new entrepreneurs should definitely leverage and and look into a lot more.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: So I love that.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Thank you for sharing that.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we've seen a lot of new brands coming out, which is, you know, you can say, well, there is that good or is that bad?
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Well, it's both.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: Um but but we did not go to a contract manufacturer.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: We visited many of them, we talked to a lot of people.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: We did not go to a contract manufacturer and say, okay, give me this, you know, off-the-shelf formula, slap a label on it with our brand, and let's be done.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: No.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, because you asked me about the process.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: The process was a process where I have to tell you, we said no more than we said yes.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: Because Debbie would come up with a formula, the lab would batch it out, we'd look at it, and then Pilar say, no, it's not what I want.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: Debbie would say, No, it's not right.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: The texture is not right.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Because everything, it's not only about the ingredients that are in a formula, but it's how those ingredients are combined.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: A combination of ingredients that you can create a different experience.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: You know, Debbie always used the term, I want it to be a luxurious formula, a luxurious experience.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: This is something you're putting on your face.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, your face doesn't get any more, you know, important uh than what you put on your face.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: So we want it to be a good, a very luxurious, enjoyable experience.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: So we did, we spent over a year coming up, you know, Debbie and Pilar working together with a lab chemist, uh coming up with a formula, rejecting the formula.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: And finally, when the when it was ready and we felt good, it passed all the testing, we said, okay, we're ready.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Now, the line, the, the, the, the design of and the the reason to be of the company, you know, we Pilate and I always said, Does the world need another skincare brand?
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Well, if it's going to be Mewtwo vanilla ice cream, the answer is no.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: We wanted to create something that was different, that was simplified because of all of these messages, all of these new products constantly coming out, you know, and the the credibility, I mean, you launch a new product, and then six months later, oh no, this is better than the one before, and this is now you have to add another product to routine.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: We wanted to simplify.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: So we said, we're not going to be a new product launching machine.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: We're a private company.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: We don't have to tell anything to Wall Street.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: You know, we're better, we're doing better numbers than last quarter, last year.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: And our intent is to keep the line tight.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: We have five products now.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: We should have had six products.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: The sixth product is a very important, crucial product necessary for any skincare line, which is a sunscreen.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Because sun protection is so important to have healthy skin.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: And we have not arrived at a formula that can be approved by Debbie, by Pilar, and the testing.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we've rejected, we we did it, it didn't work.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: They liked it, but it didn't pass the testing to the SPF level we wanted.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: So that is a work in progress.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: But other than that, the five products that we have were designed to work together, to multitask, so that you don't have to be thinking about it.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: You don't have to be saying, oh, I have to do this.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: These products were designed to work together, multitasking, bringing the best of ingredients that were available at the time of the formulation.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: And they were formulated with the intent to say, if we see a new ingredient that comes out that makes it better, we're going to improve the efficacy of the product, but we're not, and we're not going to change the texture, but we're not going to be constantly launching new products.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: And this has been the ethos of how we make, you know, how we create the simplicity.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: And by simplicity, it doesn't mean bad.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: By simple, we think it's genius and it's better because you don't have to worry about so many things.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: And the the mantra is how do we provide the highest level of efficacy and results while maximizing safety and minimizing irritation and all the things that are bad for your skin.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know what?
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: That's a really great point because it's a very, very gent, like I don't want to say gentle in the sense that, you know, I don't know, people take that word differently, but it is a gentle line.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: You know, I have not had any kind of skin concerns with it.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: I can tell, and you know, I wanted to actually say this, and Pilar, I think you will, you, you, you know, you'll agree with me is that, you know, when I try a product, you know, that luxury component of it, like what you were talking about, Ricardo, like where the texture is nice and the formula is nice, I stick to that.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: You know, there's so many, there are so many products.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: There's so many products out on the market.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: And I was that consumer, you know, before this podcast even started.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: I was that skincare nerd that would buy like the new release, you know what I mean, from like the big companies.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: And and I would always like, you know, nine times out of ten, I would be disappointed because it didn't have that factor of just, wow, I love putting this on my skin.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: I keep coming back.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: You know, that factor was not there nine times out of 10.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: So I completely echo and, you know, completely agree with everything you said in that, in that realm.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Because, you know, I know there's a huge conversation around luxury and, you know, the importance of luxury and beauty.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: And I think that whole conversation actually needs to be kind of, you know, I guess edited a little bit or expanded on because luxury can mean so many things.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: You know, luxury isn't just packaging or the look of something, it's the it's the experience and it's the the feeling that you get, like knowing that this is a product I can use time and time again, and it's gonna deliver results.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I I love everything you said.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: So, to your point, that you know, when you say that wow, factory, that's exactly what we were looking for.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: When we were formulating, we wanted to make sure that the moment that you applied that product, you would say, Wow, it feels amazing.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: And it was important because, as you know, you can't see results from a product until after four weeks or six weeks by using it consistently.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: You will stop using it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Um so that was you know, that was the most important part of that initial texture feeling of the product.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, you know, having those ingredients that would give you those results.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: And you know, it really shows in every single product in the line.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's you know, I can't rave enough about it.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: I I love, I love the um the towelette multi-pack.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: I think that's by far one of my, you know, I've already shared my story, but it's definitely a saving uh product, saving grace product for me.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: And I I think that, you know, this is actually this product actually for me was very um, you know, the most innovative that I've seen in like just, you know, using a towel to close your face because it it doesn't just take off.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: You know how some um some like companies will make you know a similar product and you put it on and your face ends up shiny or like that glossy look, it doesn't do that.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Like it's that's what really impressed me is that you know, when I used the tablet, it just made my skin look absolutely fresh.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: It made me look like I had just washed my face, you know what I mean?
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Like, and so that really blew me away when I when I saw that, especially going into a meeting, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Like that's where it really shows like if it's good or bad, you know, what you're using, because if you can't rely on your products in situations where you need them to work, then that's not money well invested, you know, at the end of the day.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: So I I think that everything you guys have done, all the you know, love and creativity and all of the you know detail-oriented approach that you've put in, it really shows in the line.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: And I just, you know, I'm so glad that you know you guys are sharing this the story with us.
- 32:16unknown: Yeah.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: You know, there's another important component of the brand, if if I may uh, you know, share with you and and your audience.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, the we think, and I and I don't want this, I I know this is not a I'm not gonna make a political statement, but I'm gonna say something that I think a lot of everybody in your audience and everybody's thinking about.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: You know, there's this discussion about, you know, capitalism and socialism and all these things.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: And we are capitalists, you know, we are we believe in free enterprise, we believe in all these things, but we believe that in order for the free enterprise system to work, there needs to be a responsible, uh responsibility backbone in every business to give back to the community that they serve.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: And it can't be real, it can't be libservice, it can't be, it needs to be genuine.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: And to the degree that you know the business community is giving back, has this sense of caring, of giving back, of being aware and supporting the communities that they serve that actually keep them in business, I think that in itself will play a major role in all the healing that is required, you know, in the country and around the world.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: So, one of the things that Pilat and I uh were very clear on, you know, the name of the brand is care.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Um, and you know, we have to walk the talk.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: It can't be care.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: You know, how do you care?
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: So we created a program called Because We Care.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: And I'll tell you a quick story about this.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: You know, we have a wonderful uh, you know, uh brand, you know, patent attorney.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: And when I first told him, you know, he was we were doing the registration for the trademark and all this, I said, we wanted we want to trademark care.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: And the guy said, you know, that's gonna be impossible because it's a generic term.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: It's you know, I said, please look into it.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Like this is really, really important because it's it really embodies what we're trying to do with brands.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: And long story shorter, through what I say, you know, is an uh you know, acts of of grace of the grace of God, uh, we got the registration.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: He called me, he said, Ricardo, you're not gonna believe we got it.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: I said, Well, God bless you.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: This is wonderful.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: We're registered trade, we've registered the brand care, which is which is crazy.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: But but at the time, you know, when we started, we said we want, we get this, we want to talk about a program called Because We Care.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: And he said, Ricardo, you know what?
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: I believe in so much in what you're doing, is I'm going to trademark that as well for you, uh, for what you're doing.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: So the story of Because We Care is we wanted to have a give back approach to the community we serve from day one.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: I have a very good friend who who basically said, Ricardo, I love everything you're talking about, but why don't you wait until you have some business?
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: Why don't you wait until you have a big customer base?
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Why don't you basically wait until you're big to talk about giving back?
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: I said, no, you're you don't get it.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: It has to be from day one.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's the real, you know, no, it that is the way to go about it.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, there's not a lot of people that do that.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: And I it really gets on my nerves because it's like, you know, if you're a brand that's making multi-millions of dollars, you know, every month from sales and you're just now starting to give back, that tells me a lot about your ethics and your morals.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: So like I completely agree with you.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: I think that that is like the epitome of the name of the brand because you're right.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: What it what good is it if you know you don't help out the others around you?
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Like that's a big part of entrepreneurship.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: And I think the fact that you've honored that, that is huge.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: I'm so happy um, you know, you recognize and we're aligned on that because I think that is such a high order value that is required.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: It's not an option, it's required of business today.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, and like I said before, there's so much healing that is that is necessary for society and for I think it's really important.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: So be you know, the philosophy behind this is you probably may have heard the the old adage to say, you know, you can't boil the ocean, but you can boil a pot.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: So our approach to this give back program is we're gonna find a pot that we can boil, and we're going to do it with the help and the guidance of the community we serve.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: So, you know, the first one was was really, you know, making the decision because we didn't have any customers, but as we started, we had those terrible, horrific fires in in California.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: And I were watching the news and we saw an entire town just being, you know, burnt to the ground.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: All these families, we said, you know what, this is the first one.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: We're gonna we we reached out to the uh the California uh fire foundation and we we gave them a little bit there and we said, okay, where do we go next?
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we then had more of a following on Instagram, so we did polling and we said, What are you interested in?
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Are you interested in what are the themes, you know, women or children or women or families, the environment, you know, what are the themes?
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: And we have been very lucky that our followers and our customers have guided us where to go next.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: So we we've been able to work and by the way, all of this is done not in the traditional, you know, corporate partnership, because that's not what this is about.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: This is we find something that we want to we want to we find that pot we want to boil, and we find a foundation that is that is honoring that, and we'll donate, and then you know, we'll move on to the next one because throughout the year we will be moving from different themes that require that we believe and our community believes that we require help.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: So um that has been our approach, and you know, it's it it's I don't want to say it's perfect, but it gives you that ability to really go and and and touch many different things.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: So we've been we've been involved.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: That first one was about you know the the fires, then we were involved with you know uh motherhood, uh, and you know, every mother counts.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: We were involved with a beautiful, really important foundation in the state of Connecticut where we are at, which is called the Be Homeful Project, which basically tries to um you know prevent homelessness.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: And what I found is that you know, there's a moment before people lose their homes where you know where some help can actually prevent everything that comes afterwards.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: You know, if you can imagine of a terrible thing that can happen to someone is to lose their home.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Think about a family that loses their home with kids.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's one of the most horrific nightmares that any, you know, that people you know would have and would have to go.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: So we found this this group that was amazing.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: Um, then we we we won.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: Well, then of course, you know, we had COVID upon us, so we we we did donations to the to the you know local hospitals here, two different hospitals.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: But the approach has also been different in a way because what we said, for example, the sales, 100% of the sales of one of our five SKU or five products for every Monday during the period we're doing it, whether it's a month, two months, or three months, 100% of the sales are donated to that cause.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: So we're not we're not playing the little percentage game, like we'll give 1% or no, no, no.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: 100% sales, and everything is driven behind this, so we can actually move the needle.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: It's like go big or go home, and you've really mastered that.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness, I'm I'm blown away.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: And also, you know, on the the causes that you have picked and you know really thought about um, you know, giving back to are actually very, very unique in a way because they're not like typical, you know how like some brands like like a for example, again, a really big brand, like they'll pick like the biggest charity and they'll be like, okay, we're just gonna give to this.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: No, like it shows that you have really handpicked um, you know, things that are very, very important for our society.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: And I am just so blown away by by those efforts.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, and everybody listening, by the way, if you go to careskincare.com and you go um down to the because we care section, you can see all of the initiatives that the brand has donated to.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: And it's absolutely mind-blowing.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Like I love it.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: I love everything about this.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: This is, you know, this is exactly the kind of initiative and the kind of, you know, just taking things into your own hands that we need.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, honestly, hats off to both of you for that.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, and like I genuinely, you know, I I love supporting companies that I believe in.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that's a huge reason I I even started this podcast is that I realized that there are these like, you know, almost giant monopolies in a market that should be more customized and should be more, you know, like I guess free.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Like people should be free to choose more options.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: And I think you guys are just such a shining example of a great option for not only skin health, but also, you know, just being able to like participate and like work with you to give back to these communities.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: That's everything.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: And that means so much to me as a consumer.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I truly applaud your brand.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: I truly applaud your vision.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: And I hope everyone listening, all of you need to right now go to careskincare.com and check out all the products.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: I promise they are phenomenal.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: You know, you guys like you know, Pilar, you really have an eye for quality and luxury.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: I will say that because it really shows.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I just go check them out, leave some comments, leave some feedback, you know, tell us what you think about the, you know, the charitable initiatives of the brand isn't involved in.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I would love to have you guys back anytime.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: Ecta, thank you.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: And I know we're we're running out of time, but I as somebody in the industry take this moment to thank you for creating this space that is so diverse and so it covers so many angles of this beautiful industry.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, you you create a space for for brands, but also for editors, for dermatologists, for everybody, cosmetic uh chemists, everybody has a place around the table.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: And we I just want to thank you on behalf of everybody that's involved, everybody that that you know has has been on your show, and all the people that listen, you are uh uh also making a huge contribution uh to the development and the future of this industry.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: So on behalf of everybody, I'm putting on the the I'm taking the mic.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: I want to thank you.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: That means the world to me.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: And you know, Ricardo, the fact that you recognized the idea of having a a seat at the table for everyone is that just you know, it really hit my heart because I that's exactly what I wanted.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much for that compliment.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: It means the world.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Thank you, thank you, thank you guys, and I will be back next time.
