Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Twins win a rare series at Yankee Stadium; Cleveland up next
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: A Yankees curse, forget about it. The Twins take two
- 0:05Speaker 1: out of three in New York and keep their good
- 0:08Speaker 1: vibes rolling. Not all good news is Byron Buxton reaggravated
- 0:12Speaker 1: a hip injury, Joe Ryan was brilliant, and Sunday's series clincher.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We'll talk about all that and more on the latest
- 0:18Speaker 1: episode of Twins Cities Territory or Minnesota Twins podcast here
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the Foul Territory Network. G I'm Zach Pearce of
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Athletic, joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins beat writer and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer
- 0:31Speaker 1: and former Minnesota Twin guys. Friday Night, thought maybe it
- 0:36Speaker 1: was gonna go the wrong sort away for the Twins
- 0:38Speaker 1: this weekend. They lost the opener of the three game
- 0:39Speaker 1: set to New York, a place where they have had
- 0:42Speaker 1: a horrible time in recent years. As of everybody watching
- 0:45Speaker 1: this probably knows. At this point, the Twins entered the
- 0:48Speaker 1: series having lost one hundred and twenty seven out of
- 0:53Speaker 1: one hundred and Oh, Matt, my math is failing me.
- 0:56Speaker 1: One hundred and fifty eight games against the since two
- 1:00Speaker 1: thousand and two, their first series win in New York
- 1:03Speaker 1: since twenty fourteen. Then, and that's now six series of
- 1:07Speaker 1: victories in the last seven. The Dodgers sweep the only
- 1:10Speaker 1: series they've lost in the last seven. They're forty four
- 1:14Speaker 1: and forty seven and still hang around in this thing
- 1:17Speaker 1: after all this time.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Even though Friday didn't go well. The harbinger are good
- 1:22Speaker 2: things to come? Was that Cody Clemens first inning home run.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Is like, hey, the Twins take a lead right away
- 1:27Speaker 2: and gave it back in the bottom of the first,
- 1:29Speaker 2: But I mean, like, you know, they didn't. They showed
- 1:32Speaker 2: right away they weren't going to be part of this.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And the only game that they lost was predictably their rookie,
- 1:38Speaker 2: you know, Mike Pratis.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Who still pitched well enough to keep them in the ballgame.
- 1:44Speaker 3: But like that was the only game they lost. They
- 1:46Speaker 3: really stood up.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The offense just was outstanding on Saturday again, Zebi Matthews,
- 1:53Speaker 2: until he got the last ration on his foot, was
- 1:56Speaker 2: pitching great. You know that first three innings he went
- 1:58Speaker 2: through no runs and I wish I was there to
- 2:01Speaker 2: get a explanation on the lasceration on the foot, but
- 2:04Speaker 2: obviously was working with it and it reopened and he
- 2:09Speaker 2: got you know.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Quickly started to get tattooed a little bit.
- 2:13Speaker 2: They got him out of there, but the offense really
- 2:14Speaker 2: came through and scored an eleven run spot. And then
- 2:17Speaker 2: Joe Ryan on Sunday was just Joe Ryan has been
- 2:20Speaker 2: an all star in every sense of the word all
- 2:22Speaker 2: year on and.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Off the field.
- 2:24Speaker 2: We'll talk a little bit about that in a minute,
- 2:26Speaker 2: but I mean, like Joe Ryan just wasn't going to
- 2:29Speaker 2: let them not win that game. And then the offense
- 2:31Speaker 2: really came through again. The two out hits have been
- 2:34Speaker 2: so clutch all year. They were really clutch again on Sunday.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Sank a Yankee team that is struggling and is beat
- 2:41Speaker 2: up and is without some of their really big guns.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But so what the Yankees in their weakest have done
- 2:47Speaker 2: this twenty fourteen, Duff was in the minors, Zach, I
- 2:52Speaker 2: don't know where you and I were. I was in Chicago.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Were you in La at Fox? Yeah?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Sure, yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I mean it's it's wild to think twelve years have
- 3:03Speaker 2: gone since. And it's funny because two years or three
- 3:06Speaker 2: years ago they got that split at Yankee Stadum of
- 3:08Speaker 2: the four game series and someone messaged me and said,
- 3:11Speaker 2: didn't they win the series three years ago?
- 3:13Speaker 3: And I was like, well, they split a four game series,
- 3:15Speaker 3: which feels like a victory if you're the Pins.
- 3:18Speaker 2: This is a real one. This one matters. It just
- 3:22Speaker 2: keeps the good vibes going. They needed this, Dan, you
- 3:25Speaker 2: mentioned obviously the Yankees were beat up. It wasn't the
- 3:29Speaker 2: full version of the team they've been struggling to. They
- 3:33Speaker 2: lost seven straight going into the game. You could I
- 3:35Speaker 2: think you could feel that over the weekend. Just I
- 3:37Speaker 2: mean even through the TV with the crowd. It was
- 3:39Speaker 2: thim crowds and they got booed quite a bit. From
- 3:43Speaker 2: what it's like.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But Tyler, you kind of you spoke a little bit
- 3:46Speaker 1: in your cameo video that you provided for us on
- 3:48Speaker 1: Friday after technical issues about what it's like playing there.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But I just I guess I'm not obviously Yeah you were, you.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Out of there.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it's you can be the hero or the goat
- 4:04Speaker 4: very quickly, and not in the good way. The goat,
- 4:07Speaker 4: you know it's you heard him turning on their own guys.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You know they've turned on gen Carlos Stanton.
- 4:12Speaker 5: The guys put up MVP numbers for his whole career,
- 4:14Speaker 5: and you know they don't care who you are.
- 4:17Speaker 4: You know, as quickly as it can be against you,
- 4:20Speaker 4: they can also turn on their own. And when you're
- 4:22Speaker 4: getting them to do that in that stadium, that means
- 4:24Speaker 4: you're doing something right, you know. And and the bats,
- 4:27Speaker 4: I mean it was pretty incredible, you know, picked up
- 4:30Speaker 4: and then rewatch and it's just like home or home
- 4:32Speaker 4: or Homer. I'm like, that's literally you can't defend that.
- 4:35Speaker 4: So you know, the bats, the bats are hot. Man,
- 4:38Speaker 4: it's one you whatever these guys are doing, like, just
- 4:41Speaker 4: keep them in the same room, don't change anything. You know,
- 4:44Speaker 4: as one of my coaches, Do clib And used to say,
- 4:46Speaker 4: whatever you did last night, do it again, because you.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Know something's working right now.
- 4:50Speaker 4: You know, unfortunately some big pieces are missing, but you
- 4:53Speaker 4: know it's it's firing on all cylinders. And you know,
- 4:57Speaker 4: Joe yesterday was that was just dominant. You could all
- 5:00Speaker 4: those guys were looking for the fastball and still couldn't
- 5:02Speaker 4: get to it, and it was just here it comes,
- 5:05Speaker 4: and you're out and onto the next one, and you
- 5:08Speaker 4: know that's that's a big momentum builder.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Come back home for sure.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That ballpark if you just just hit a ball in
- 5:14Speaker 1: the air in the direction of right field, it's like
- 5:18Speaker 1: probably home run. Josh Bell had one where he had
- 5:21Speaker 1: this really awkward looking swing home run treumvor Laurna kitt
- 5:24Speaker 1: what I thought was a single to right field, laser
- 5:27Speaker 1: beam home run. Just incredible. But the Twins took advantage.
- 5:30Speaker 1: To their credit, they scored a first inning run in
- 5:32Speaker 1: every game Dan, which back when they were playing so
- 5:35Speaker 1: well earlier in the season, it felt like they were
- 5:36Speaker 1: piling on a lot of runs early to help out
- 5:38Speaker 1: that pitching stuff.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, first, real quick on the right field home runs.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Luke Keishaw last year when we were there, was practicing
- 5:46Speaker 2: that swing.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I watched him. I thought it was to last year.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and he got on this trip and that was huge,
- 5:54Speaker 2: Like that was great for him. But no, the first
- 5:56Speaker 2: thing runs are huge, and especially on Sunday when you
- 5:59Speaker 2: have Joe Ryan going and it was another two out
- 6:03Speaker 2: Josh Bell knock. That's the thing I think is the
- 6:07Speaker 2: most particularly, the most impressive part of the offense is that,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you know, Derek Shelton always talks about the twenty we
- 6:13Speaker 2: go twenty seven ounce, we don't give it, but it's
- 6:15Speaker 2: more of the two out hits that really are deflating
- 6:18Speaker 2: for an opposing pitcher. The guy thinks he's gonna get
- 6:21Speaker 2: out of it. You know, you're in a jam, and
- 6:23Speaker 2: here you are. You gonna get your team back in
- 6:24Speaker 2: the dug out unscathed. And oh, by the way, here
- 6:27Speaker 2: comes Josh Bell and he hit a rocket to right
- 6:29Speaker 2: and their right fielder Schuerman kind of got the glove
- 6:33Speaker 2: to it, but went a long way.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Yeah, he.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I mean went a long way to get that ball
- 6:40Speaker 2: to and anything off Josh Bell's bat is usually heat
- 6:43Speaker 2: seeking missile, but it gets down. They take the one
- 6:47Speaker 2: nothing lead, and they build and they just slowly built,
- 6:50Speaker 2: and then Roy Slewis had a two out, two run
- 6:53Speaker 2: single leader in the fourth or fifth inning to make
- 6:55Speaker 2: it a four to nothing game. But I know, Zach,
- 6:58Speaker 2: that like this has been something that they've been really
- 7:00Speaker 2: good at. They are fifth in the American or they're
- 7:02Speaker 2: fifth in baseball with two out runners in scoring position.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And that's not just average, that's OPS is sixth, but
- 7:10Speaker 2: the league OPS the averages seven to nine, So they're
- 7:13Speaker 2: fifty two points ahead. They're within about fifty or sixty
- 7:16Speaker 2: points of Philadelphia, who's the top team. But here's The
- 7:20Speaker 2: part that I love is I'm just looking at the numbers.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Josh Bell hitting with two outs and runners in scoring
- 7:26Speaker 2: position this year three sixty six, eleven thirty ops, twenty
- 7:30Speaker 2: one RBIs, brooks Lee eighteen RBIs. He's hitting threeho eight.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Trevor Larnick has a twelve to fifty five OPS in
- 7:36Speaker 2: those situations. Cody Clemens is nine to sixteen. Ryan Jeffers,
- 7:40Speaker 2: who they may get back pretty soon, has a nineteen
- 7:43Speaker 2: hundred OPS. Ryan Kreidler thirteen forty six ops. Interestingly enough,
- 7:48Speaker 2: Byron Buckston has not been very good in that he's
- 7:50Speaker 2: two for twenty eight this season baton seventy one, which
- 7:54Speaker 2: is just the one area where he's not hitting. But
- 7:56Speaker 2: it just it's so deflating for the other team, and
- 7:58Speaker 2: the Twins have been really good good at it, especially
- 8:01Speaker 2: when it's you know, I'm imagining that Royce Lewis one
- 8:03Speaker 2: was just a killer, because it's if you get back
- 8:05Speaker 2: in the dugout and you're down to nothing, even with
- 8:08Speaker 2: Joe Ryan on the mountain, you still probably think you're
- 8:10Speaker 2: you have a fighting shot.
- 8:13Speaker 1: And it was one of the differences in Friday Night's
- 8:15Speaker 1: loss to the Twins. Didn't get very many of those opportunities.
- 8:18Speaker 1: The one they did Royce Lewis and the eighth inning
- 8:21Speaker 1: grounded into a fielder's choice to end it with the
- 8:23Speaker 1: bases loaded down down three. Uh, they're not going to help.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That's why you get a hit every time, of course,
- 8:29Speaker 1: but correct.
- 8:30Speaker 3: No, but yesterday was huge for him.
- 8:32Speaker 2: That was only his third and fourth RBIs with two
- 8:35Speaker 2: outs all season as he continues to get healthy. So
- 8:38Speaker 2: like you're right, those are those moments can change the
- 8:42Speaker 2: game either.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Way, Tyler, since it hasn't happened since twenty fourteen, I
- 8:47Speaker 1: guess the Twins never won a series at Yankee Stadium
- 8:50Speaker 1: while you were there. But did you did you win
- 8:53Speaker 1: games at Yankee Stadium?
- 8:55Speaker 3: Do you think?
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah, we have sprinkled a couple in there, but you
- 8:58Speaker 4: know we had It was some good games, you know.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Granted my memories are the the.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Playoffs, But actually I had a start there.
- 9:06Speaker 4: I went, I think it went seven perfect and then
- 9:08Speaker 4: give up a double to Aaron Hicks seven and then
- 9:11Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure it was and then it was Mark
- 9:14Speaker 4: to Shires.
- 9:14Speaker 5: I wouldn't be shocked if it was the last homer
- 9:16Speaker 5: of his career.
- 9:17Speaker 4: I gave up a solo shot, I think, but we
- 9:19Speaker 4: want It was a day game, and it was actually
- 9:21Speaker 4: it was hilarious. It was one of those like I
- 9:23Speaker 4: don't know how well Dan knew Terry Ryan or if
- 9:26Speaker 4: you've been around in that much, but it was one
- 9:28Speaker 4: He came up to me like literally gave me a
- 9:30Speaker 4: hug because we had been going through it like we
- 9:31Speaker 4: were just.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Grinding a little bit, and he gave me a hug.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I was like, I don't know what to do right now,
- 9:36Speaker 4: but I know I did a good job today anyway,
- 9:38Speaker 4: so I know we've sprinkled a couple in, but yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 4: that place is It's just it happened so fast. You know,
- 9:44Speaker 4: a mishit to right field is a homer, and then
- 9:46Speaker 4: you give up the three run shot that quick and
- 9:48Speaker 4: you're just like what you know, you blinking it happens,
- 9:50Speaker 4: and then you know the game's over.
- 9:52Speaker 5: You know they're bringing in the.
- 9:53Speaker 4: The At the time, it was Chapman and the boys
- 9:55Speaker 4: out there in the bullpen, and it was just like,
- 9:57Speaker 4: what are we supposed to do against these guys.
- 10:00Speaker 1: June twenty sixth, twenty sixteen, Tyler Duffy went eight innings
- 10:04Speaker 1: at Yankee Stadium. That would have still been old Yankee
- 10:07Speaker 1: Stadium too, right, Oh yeah, it's that old guy.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I've never played in the old guy.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Two one run, two hits, one run, and you said,
- 10:22Speaker 1: oh yeah, Mark to share, give me the right center.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It was his thirteenth homer of the twenty sixteen season.
- 10:31Speaker 1: He hit two more after that, so almost all right.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Would you have taken some pride in being the last
- 10:38Speaker 3: time run to share every hit?
- 10:40Speaker 4: It would have been something cool just to like have it,
- 10:43Speaker 4: you know, like who uh who Jeter got David Price
- 10:46Speaker 4: right for his three thousandth or something or some slickers.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Or three hundred homer or whatever it was.
- 10:52Speaker 4: You know, if you're gonna get got, you might as
- 10:53Speaker 4: well have it be historic, you know.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, don't give up.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Give up the five hundred foot homer, not the one
- 10:59Speaker 5: that barely it goes.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Over the threshow, not the Trevor lar lime drive. We'll
- 11:05Speaker 1: say quick break, we'll be right back. We'll talk about
- 11:07Speaker 1: Joe Ryan Byron Buxton and more. Right after this book.
- 11:11Speaker 6: In summertime, it's cool in the morning, hot during the day,
- 11:15Speaker 6: cool again at night. Rarely am I sitting there going, oh,
- 11:18Speaker 6: I'm just gonna do one thing at a time. I'm
- 11:20Speaker 6: bouncing from work, I'm bouncing in the yard, I'm running
- 11:24Speaker 6: to a game. Fabletics has got me with price, comfort
- 11:29Speaker 6: and versatility with all the gear that I'm getting from them.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Yeah, we're talking about premium activewear you'd expect from higher

- 11:40Speaker 7: built to actually last. And if you're going to Fabletics,
- 11:45Speaker 7: you should be joining as a VIP, which completely changes

- 12:00Speaker 7: to unlock this offer. This is a limited time offer,
- 12:03Speaker 7: so don't wait again. That's fabletics dot Com slash foul
- 12:07Speaker 7: for seventy to eighty percent off everything as a new VIP.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Obviously doesn't really mean anything to win a regular season
- 12:19Speaker 1: series the way it does at least in the playoffs,
- 12:21Speaker 1: but certainly for vibes it helps, I would say, And
- 12:25Speaker 1: the Twins cannot have had a better guy on the mound.
- 12:27Speaker 1: On Sunday, Dan Newly minted All Star Joe Ryan seven innings, pitched,
- 12:35Speaker 1: three hit. There it is on the screen if you're
- 12:36Speaker 1: watching on YouTube three it's nine k's no runs. Just
- 12:39Speaker 1: exactly what the Twins needed in a game where, yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 1: if you'll lose it, it's not the end of the world,
- 12:45Speaker 1: but especially there in that place to like finish that
- 12:48Speaker 1: series off with the victory, how to feel especially good.
- 12:52Speaker 2: He's been an All Star in every sense of the
- 12:54Speaker 2: word on off the field. You know, he early in
- 12:56Speaker 2: the week he was asking me and Matthew Leech Warren
- 13:00Speaker 2: and if we knew anything about the All Star how
- 13:04Speaker 2: it went, you could tell he wanted to be an
- 13:06Speaker 2: All Star.
- 13:07Speaker 3: He got it last year, but it was because of
- 13:09Speaker 3: Rocco did some politicking for him.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Rocco reached out to Aaron Boone and said, hey, look,
- 13:14Speaker 2: Joe Ryan will be available on Tuesday. We are moving
- 13:16Speaker 2: him to Friday so that he can pitch in the
- 13:19Speaker 2: All Star Game. If you guys need an injury replacement,
- 13:22Speaker 2: he's good to go. And he got to make it
- 13:24Speaker 2: like he Hunter Brown went on the il or Hunter
- 13:27Speaker 2: Brown just was an injury replacement.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Joe Ryan made it.
- 13:30Speaker 2: You know, he wanted to back it up and get
- 13:32Speaker 2: in again, and he got in on the original team
- 13:34Speaker 2: this time there was no politicking needed. But the thing
- 13:36Speaker 2: is is, like I will say, Joe Ryan not only
- 13:39Speaker 2: has been an all star in the mound, I think
- 13:41Speaker 2: what has been the really very impressive part is he's
- 13:45Speaker 2: been doing all this where everybody's thought that he has
- 13:49Speaker 2: been one foot out the door since August last year
- 13:52Speaker 2: because that tweet that went out there was you know,
- 13:56Speaker 2: there were talks between the Twins and the Red Sox,
- 13:58Speaker 2: but nothing was close. They were not even close to
- 14:00Speaker 2: the final because the Red Sox tried to come in
- 14:03Speaker 2: at the last minute with a week offer, like a
- 14:06Speaker 2: top heavy offer that didn't get the whole package for
- 14:09Speaker 2: a guy that had two and a half years left.
- 14:11Speaker 2: But basically has to put Joe Ryan on every trade
- 14:14Speaker 2: list since Opening Days since spring training, players who could
- 14:18Speaker 2: be traded Joe Ryan at the top along with Derek Scoble.
- 14:23Speaker 3: What I love about the way Joe Ryan has handled
- 14:25Speaker 3: this is he basically said.
- 14:28Speaker 2: If I'm back there, I'm back there and I'm in
- 14:30Speaker 2: Like it's okay, I've had success there. This organization. Let
- 14:35Speaker 2: me grow and I'm going to give it everything. But
- 14:39Speaker 2: you know that's easy words to say. You know, backing
- 14:43Speaker 2: it up isn't other thing. And I've seen in just
- 14:46Speaker 2: private conversations with Joe Ryan in the clubhouse over this
- 14:50Speaker 2: since dating back to spring training, the buy in is real.
- 14:53Speaker 2: He wants ownership to have to add, he wants the
- 14:57Speaker 2: front office to have to add the trade deadline.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Loves this group. He's having just as much fun as
- 15:02Speaker 3: all of them.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And I think when you think about the fact that
- 15:06Speaker 2: nobody would blame him if he was pissed off about
- 15:09Speaker 2: last year watching all those guys get traded and he
- 15:11Speaker 2: was stuck on the Twins, nobody would blame him for
- 15:14Speaker 2: thinking having survivors like just being pissed at true there
- 15:19Speaker 2: and having one foot out the door. And instead he's
- 15:21Speaker 2: gone the opposite way and has just embraced it being present.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I love what I've heard from him, Like I.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Loved his response to you know, it was important to
- 15:30Speaker 2: him that he made this All Star team, and instead
- 15:33Speaker 2: when he got asked about it on Saturday, he talked
- 15:35Speaker 2: about the offense and how the offense has been so
- 15:37Speaker 2: good and has allowed him to be a little bit
- 15:40Speaker 2: freer when he takes the mount and he talked about
- 15:43Speaker 2: the games ahead said I know where I'll be in
- 15:45Speaker 2: two weeks.
- 15:45Speaker 3: That's great.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to it. But he said, there's a
- 15:49Speaker 2: big important stretch coming up for this team. Let's keep pushing.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Let's make them, let's force their hands and make them
- 15:56Speaker 2: add to this team. I mean, the messaging has been great,
- 16:00Speaker 2: like there's just a lot of maturity there. It's a
- 16:03Speaker 2: guy you wish he could keep him for a long term,
- 16:06Speaker 2: but you know, he is thirty and he's gonna want a.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Six year deal, maybe a seven year deal. And I
- 16:11Speaker 3: don't know that the.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Twins are the kind of team that can absorb a
- 16:13Speaker 2: bad contract at the end. I do think Joe Ryan
- 16:16Speaker 2: is the kind of dude who can physically with stand up.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I mean, look, this guy's a specimen. And if there's
- 16:23Speaker 2: somebody I would be willing to bet on being healthy
- 16:27Speaker 2: in six or seven years, I think Joe Ryan is
- 16:30Speaker 2: as strong candidate as any. But I just don't think
- 16:32Speaker 2: the Twins are the type of team with the current
- 16:34Speaker 2: arrangement for the CBA where it makes you know, I
- 16:38Speaker 2: just I think it's not in there.
- 16:41Speaker 3: I don't know calculus to sign him long term.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So realistically, unless the CBA changes, maybe maybe they could
- 16:49Speaker 2: keep him then, but it's the trade talk is all understandable.
- 16:54Speaker 2: It's reasonable to mention Joe Ryan and he has just
- 16:58Speaker 2: thrown it all to the side and pitch and focus
- 17:01Speaker 2: and it's been awesome to see.
- 17:04Speaker 1: My favorite moment was from Sunday was in the seventh inning.
- 17:08Speaker 1: He got the first two batters out and then I
- 17:12Speaker 1: think it was an infield single for Cody Bellinger and
- 17:14Speaker 1: then he walked yeah and looked to the dugout. I
- 17:18Speaker 1: don't I didn't see what may have come out of
- 17:20Speaker 1: the dugout, but he just like went like thumbs up,
- 17:23Speaker 1: like don't don't, don't think. Obviously, a six to nothing
- 17:28Speaker 1: lead at the time helps Derek Shelton go ahead and
- 17:31Speaker 1: make that decision, but it was the right decision. He
- 17:33Speaker 1: struck out Rosario to end the inning, and just Tyler
- 17:36Speaker 1: and like in every way the ways Dan mentioned off
- 17:39Speaker 1: the field and on the field, he's just been exactly
- 17:42Speaker 1: what you want out there.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Well and you could see like in the moment he
- 17:46Speaker 4: I mean, he's such a cool, calm guy, and you
- 17:49Speaker 4: know he has his little antics in the game, but
- 17:51Speaker 4: he's like.
- 17:53Speaker 5: I've seen before we were talking earlier.
- 17:55Speaker 4: It's just like at times you can tell he the
- 17:58Speaker 4: hitters know what's coming and he's just gonna will it
- 18:01Speaker 4: on you and it's gonna you're just out. You know,
- 18:03Speaker 4: his stuff is is unique to him. You know that
- 18:07Speaker 4: there's a reason he is so dominant, and he is.
- 18:10Speaker 4: He keeps getting better, Like that's what the best part is,
- 18:12Speaker 4: Like he's developing further and like learning how to use
- 18:16Speaker 4: the locations and like, you know, watching him his outings,
- 18:19Speaker 4: you know, popping the guys with the fastball down because
- 18:22Speaker 4: he's living up at the top all day and his
- 18:24Speaker 4: location is what's when he's on, you can see it.
- 18:28Speaker 4: I mean he splits the corners. It's at the top
- 18:30Speaker 4: edge and the hitters are just they're helpless. And it's
- 18:34Speaker 4: such a huge thing to have a guy like that
- 18:37Speaker 4: in any part of your rotation. But like he's a
- 18:39Speaker 4: guy you you know, we're talking about trading, but like
- 18:42Speaker 4: you keep him, it's it solidifies something that you can't
- 18:45Speaker 4: It's it's so hard to find, you know, the Terrek scoobles.
- 18:49Speaker 4: His name's coming up in trades things like that. Teams
- 18:52Speaker 4: won him. But the same time, man, you you get
- 18:54Speaker 4: rid of a guy like him. It just changes your franchise. Honestly,
- 18:58Speaker 4: it's you know, you don't want to sign him long term.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Maybe you know because if he's older, but it is
- 19:04Speaker 4: what it is, and you know, I have for me,
- 19:07Speaker 4: I would love and I know the Twins fans would
- 19:09Speaker 4: love to keep him around of another year. But you know,
- 19:11Speaker 4: it's just I want the guys to win so they
- 19:13Speaker 4: can't get rid of him.
- 19:14Speaker 5: I think that's the best case scenario. Yeah, people winning games.
- 19:17Speaker 4: So this conversation is mood because otherwise it's gonna be
- 19:20Speaker 4: it's gonna be a tough month of August.
- 19:22Speaker 3: It's be sad.
- 19:23Speaker 4: It would just be just it would just be not
- 19:26Speaker 4: We already went through this last year.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I mean like like it was just going through it
- 19:31Speaker 2: last year was you know, you you develop relationships with
- 19:34Speaker 2: players over the years, and like ten just walked out
- 19:38Speaker 2: the door last year. It's like what like you know,
- 19:42Speaker 2: like five or six of them we knew were free
- 19:44Speaker 2: agents and gonna be gone, Like we knew that was
- 19:46Speaker 2: gonna happen.
- 19:47Speaker 3: But then you like see the.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Jacks Duran Duran, like Duran grew up so much in
- 19:52Speaker 2: the last couple of years, and man, he gets it
- 19:55Speaker 2: like he had the best one liners as a quote,
- 19:57Speaker 2: he is funny as hell, man, and like like he's
- 20:00Speaker 2: just a nice dude. And then Jack's like to see
- 20:03Speaker 2: Jacks go from a six point two era starting pitcher
- 20:07Speaker 2: into a kick ass setup guy, like you saw like
- 20:11Speaker 2: all these yeah, you saw the evolution all those guys.
- 20:14Speaker 3: So yeah, it's not anything. I'll say this.
- 20:17Speaker 2: It makes for great headlines and people read that stuff.
- 20:20Speaker 2: But my favorite last year, I had one of my
- 20:23Speaker 2: favorite articles I've ever written, had just all the details
- 20:26Speaker 2: of the deadline and broke it down. And one of
- 20:31Speaker 2: my followers she tweeted back, She's like, amazing article. I
- 20:34Speaker 2: hated every minute of it. And I'm like, yeah, pretty much,
- 20:37Speaker 2: that's it.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Oh well, hopefully at least beyond this month, Twins will
- 20:46Speaker 1: still be able to enjoy Joe Ryan's service on the team.
- 20:51Speaker 1: But now it's time for everyone's favorite segment, Daily Dingers.
- 21:00Speaker 1: That's right, MLB season is in full swing and fan
- 21:05Speaker 1: Duel is giving you a chance to call your shot
- 21:06Speaker 1: with Daily Dingers Joining the Action. Joining Joining the action
- 21:10Speaker 1: is easy. Just make your free pick on who's hitting
- 21:12Speaker 1: a home run in their game, and if you're right,
- 21:14Speaker 1: you'll get a profit boost to use on your next
- 21:16Speaker 1: bet for a chance that extra winnings. It's just another
- 21:19Speaker 1: reason why fan Duel is the home of home runs.
- 21:22Speaker 1: The Twins are off today, Monday the sixth. They start
- 21:25Speaker 1: a big series at home against Cleveland on Tuesday night,
- 21:29Speaker 1: so we'll look ahead to that game for this segment.
- 21:32Speaker 1: We'll also talk more about Cleveland later on. But Joey Cantillo,
- 21:38Speaker 1: Hawaii's finest, is the starting pitcher. It's had a solid
- 21:41Speaker 1: year for the Guardians. I always stuff to think twice
- 21:44Speaker 1: before I say the Cleveland team's name, But uh yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 1: what do we think? We gotta? We gotta. Twins are
- 21:54Speaker 1: obviously hot runs. He's a lefty.
- 21:57Speaker 2: He's a lefty now, but then anything is that his
- 22:02Speaker 2: I'm looking right now. He struggled a little bit more
- 22:06Speaker 2: this year. Early on, he was his splits against lefties
- 22:10Speaker 2: were different.
- 22:12Speaker 3: But he we'll go right.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Handed guys are gonna be the guys. I'm gonna cheat
- 22:18Speaker 2: and go with I'm going Josh Bell. Josh Bell is
- 22:20Speaker 2: having so much fun. Yeah, Josh Bell homeward from both
- 22:25Speaker 2: sides of play the other day. I believe he's the
- 22:26Speaker 2: seventh Twin to ever do that. I think maybe Eddie
- 22:31Speaker 2: was the last one. Eddie Rosario in that three homer
- 22:33Speaker 2: game against Cleveland at home.
- 22:36Speaker 3: I know, Duff, you remember that.
- 22:37Speaker 2: It was in June of twenty eighteen when Eddie was
- 22:40Speaker 2: the hottest player in the planet and then got snubbed
- 22:42Speaker 2: on the All Star Game.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Absolutely snubbed on the All Star Game.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Lads should be voted throwing it out there.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Eddie was so damn good man. Eddie was so good
- 22:53Speaker 3: that year. But yeah, Josh Bell.
- 22:56Speaker 4: For me, I like Royce, Royce hes he needs to
- 23:01Speaker 4: get in on the party and get one in the air.
- 23:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Uh well those are my two first drafts.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Uh.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Just for anybody who is not familiar, I think I
- 23:15Speaker 1: don't even know. We're at eleven of twelve times we've
- 23:18Speaker 1: done this segment. One of we've only missed once. We've
- 23:20Speaker 1: missed once because the only two of us were picking
- 23:23Speaker 1: because Tyler wasn't here and Dan picked an injured player.
- 23:29Speaker 3: That's right, someone.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm gonna go Ryan Kridler got to step up,
- 23:39Speaker 1: but Buxton presumably not playing, so hyeah, we should see
- 23:44Speaker 1: a lot of him in that game. I always forget
- 23:47Speaker 1: who we picked, so I'm gonna try to commit it
- 23:48Speaker 1: to memory. Josh Bell, Royce Lewis, Ryan Kreidler. Those are
- 23:52Speaker 1: the picks. That's for Tuesday night's game against Cleveland, the
- 23:55Speaker 1: next Twins game. If you would like to play a
- 23:57Speaker 1: daily dinger, you don't have to wait till tomorrow. You can.

- 24:34Speaker 1: We've once again made it to the third section of
- 24:37Speaker 1: the show without talking about Byron Buxton. Well, we might
- 24:39Speaker 1: have mentioned his name a couple of times, but that
- 24:43Speaker 1: was that was certainly the bad news of the weekend
- 24:46Speaker 1: in Byron Buxton actually was thrown out stealing second base
- 24:50Speaker 1: and appeared to injure himself or reaggravate the hip injury.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I should say on the slide, what do we know
- 24:56Speaker 1: about him?
- 24:58Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't know that much. I'm sure we won't know.
- 25:01Speaker 2: It's gonna be probably the same kind of quiet and
- 25:04Speaker 2: they'll get him healthy and go. And you know, next Saturday,
- 25:08Speaker 2: after four days off, played center field right away.
- 25:12Speaker 3: I think he doubled in.
- 25:12Speaker 2: His first at bat Saturday. You know, had a big
- 25:15Speaker 2: night that day or part. It didn't Homer, but you know,
- 25:18Speaker 2: had two hits in the game, had an impact. And
- 25:21Speaker 2: then singles in the first inning, like you said, gets
- 25:25Speaker 2: thrown out stealing bases. I think that was his first
- 25:27Speaker 2: time in like thirty seven attempts he got caught stealing.
- 25:31Speaker 2: But we'll we'll see. So here's where I am. And
- 25:34Speaker 2: I'm definitely gonna ask you what you would how important
- 25:38Speaker 2: this is. So I'm of the mind that Byron maybe
- 25:41Speaker 2: should think about IL right here, just because it's six
- 25:45Speaker 2: games to go. If you take the six games right now,
- 25:48Speaker 2: you backdate it to today Monday, that's a twelve day
- 25:52Speaker 2: break before the second half starts in Chicago.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Now it's a big deal.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Because a it means he can't play in the All
- 25:58Speaker 2: Star Game, but even more, he doesn't to play outst.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Cleveland and Anaheim to finish the first half.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Now, this is the guy that did say last week
- 26:05Speaker 2: when we're in Houston that he doesn't feel like he
- 26:07Speaker 2: needs to be Superman and can.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Trust his teammates.
- 26:11Speaker 2: But there is one component to this that I will
- 26:13Speaker 2: acknowledge is I think is big and you can maybe
- 26:16Speaker 2: expand on it. Byron hasn't gone on the AL yet
- 26:18Speaker 2: this year. I know that's a huge deal for him
- 26:21Speaker 2: from a standpoint of I'd like to go through a
- 26:24Speaker 2: year without going on the IL. He's managed it. Early
- 26:26Speaker 2: in May he got hurt, like it was mid May.
- 26:29Speaker 2: He missed five games.
- 26:30Speaker 3: He DHD a ton.
- 26:31Speaker 2: When he came back, didn't play center field, but played
- 26:34Speaker 2: himself back into centerfield shape, and until.
- 26:37Speaker 3: This last week really was going fine.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Or last ten days whatever is had it pop up
- 26:42Speaker 2: again four days out, came back, played center. So he's
- 26:46Speaker 2: been able to manage. And I mean, look, he's been incredible.
- 26:49Speaker 2: He's an All All Star starter. Awesome for him, congrats
- 26:53Speaker 2: on that finally getting his flowers.
- 26:57Speaker 3: But does.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Know how much does like staying off the I l
- 27:03Speaker 2: you know that it's tough, I imagine trying to figure
- 27:06Speaker 2: that out.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I think it's probably a point that he would like
- 27:10Speaker 4: to have, you know, a notch under his belt to
- 27:12Speaker 4: not have to do that. But at the same time,
- 27:15Speaker 4: like the team and the long term needs him, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 4: it's just frankly, they need him in that lineup, you know. Now,
- 27:26Speaker 4: like with the kind of built in runway here, it's
- 27:28Speaker 4: almost the perfect amount of days to where, hey, man
- 27:32Speaker 4: go on, you know, because at this point, if he's
- 27:34Speaker 4: dinged up a little bit, I can't imagine he's going
- 27:36Speaker 4: to go play in the All Star Game, you know,
- 27:38Speaker 4: as much as he probably wants to. It's on it
- 27:41Speaker 4: becomes one of those it's like, hey, you got a
- 27:43Speaker 4: little naggy something like, we're not even going to mess
- 27:46Speaker 4: with it, and he may want to play really badly,
- 27:48Speaker 4: Like who knows what he's thinking, you know, conversations he's had.
- 27:52Speaker 4: But it is definitely a point of pride for a
- 27:54Speaker 4: lot of guys. You know, it used to be so common,
- 27:56Speaker 4: you know, felt like every team had a guy that
- 27:58Speaker 4: would just go once sick, and it's just hard to
- 28:01Speaker 4: do now. Between matchups and everything, and you know he's
- 28:05Speaker 4: not even trying to do that.
- 28:06Speaker 5: He's just trying to be able to play regularly.
- 28:08Speaker 4: And you know, I think whatever they did that little
- 28:11Speaker 4: reset before that took the five days, they probably have
- 28:14Speaker 4: that etched in stone. They're going to go right back
- 28:16Speaker 4: to it, and so it may be something they may
- 28:19Speaker 4: give it a couple of days. You know, they can
- 28:21Speaker 4: retro it if they need to put him on, but maybe.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Give him a couple of days at home.
- 28:25Speaker 4: You know, in the home training room, it's always a
- 28:27Speaker 4: little bit better. There's just like he could wake up
- 28:30Speaker 4: the day and feel a little bit better, you know,
- 28:32Speaker 4: and he but he you know, I know Bucks so
- 28:35Speaker 4: well and you do too. It's just he wants to
- 28:37Speaker 4: be out there and he's into everything possible. Yes, you know,
- 28:40Speaker 4: he felt he was right and he you know, it
- 28:42Speaker 4: just it didn't agree with him. So you know, it's
- 28:45Speaker 4: definitely one you look in the mirror for a minute
- 28:47Speaker 4: and figure out, you know, hey, like is it worth
- 28:50Speaker 4: missing months to take off ten days?
- 28:52Speaker 2: Now?
- 28:53Speaker 4: You know you have the All Star break coming up,
- 28:55Speaker 4: so there's a window where you basically would miss two
- 28:57Speaker 4: series and that's it, you know, So I don't it's
- 29:00Speaker 4: It's gonna be a tough decision for everybody, but you know,
- 29:02Speaker 4: I think he'll the calmer heads will, we'll have some
- 29:06Speaker 4: conversations and you know, they'll get the right decision made.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Also of no this weekend are coming off this series
- 29:14Speaker 1: Dan The Twins added some help to their bullpen and
- 29:17Speaker 1: an interesting transaction with the Tigers. They brought on wusuk Go,
- 29:22Speaker 1: who is, uh, believe in a minor league system for
- 29:25Speaker 1: Detroit right now.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Yeah, tearing it so as like fourth, Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 1: But has a clause in his contract that he has
- 29:32Speaker 1: to go to the major league team. Is that correct
- 29:34Speaker 1: because of this moment?
- 29:35Speaker 2: Yeah, So all these exactly everybody has. They're they're called
- 29:39Speaker 2: either upward mobility or assignment clauses, And basically you get
- 29:44Speaker 2: this like opt out date essentially where you get to
- 29:46Speaker 2: activate it in your your contract and you say like
- 29:50Speaker 2: and and they're pretty much I think universal dates for
- 29:53Speaker 2: a lot of guys, so that like you'll see it.
- 29:54Speaker 2: And the Twins lost. The Twins lost John Breba and
- 29:59Speaker 2: somebody else, oh, Matt Bowman about six weeks ago at
- 30:03Speaker 2: a for the same reason, because they were somebody else
- 30:07Speaker 2: was wanting to take a chance on them.
- 30:09Speaker 3: And bring them to the majors.
- 30:10Speaker 2: So basically, wusuk Go had this upward Mobility assignment clause
- 30:17Speaker 2: that said on July third, I will activate this and
- 30:21Speaker 2: it allows everybody in the majors a chance to pick
- 30:23Speaker 2: me up. And at that point, say a team like
- 30:27Speaker 2: the Twins decides to pick me up, the Tigers then
- 30:30Speaker 2: have the chance to say, no, we'll keep him. It's
- 30:33Speaker 2: almost like a restricted free agent in the NBA where
- 30:36Speaker 2: you can just pay, like take the deal and give
- 30:41Speaker 2: the guy the money and bring him. You're forced into
- 30:43Speaker 2: the action basically, and so they said that the Tigers.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Tigers said no, we're not going to put him in
- 30:50Speaker 2: the majors. Twins get him. Essentially throws out a fastball, curveball,
- 30:55Speaker 2: and a cutter. He's had a lot of walk issues.
- 30:58Speaker 2: One hundred and thirty six innings sixty walks, and the
- 31:00Speaker 2: miners pitched for the.
- 31:02Speaker 3: LG Twins in Korea.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Want a championship to be I think it was the closer. Yeah,
- 31:08Speaker 2: so fourth org though in three years. So, I mean,
- 31:12Speaker 2: the walk issues are real, but look, you take these
- 31:15Speaker 2: lottery tickets and you hope they pan out, just like
- 31:18Speaker 2: justin Lawrence didn't and Luis Garcia didn't, but jo Andros
- 31:21Speaker 2: Gomez did you know, when you're in this spot where
- 31:24Speaker 2: your bullpen is as shoddy as theirs has been, you
- 31:28Speaker 2: take these chances with guys who have stuff.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Well, perhaps we'll see him this week. The Twins welcome
- 31:35Speaker 1: Cleveland for three games starting Tuesday, and then it's the
- 31:39Speaker 1: Angels behind that, and then it's the All Star break.
- 31:41Speaker 1: So getting getting to that unofficial halfway spot here, but
- 31:46Speaker 1: obviously a big one with Cleveland. Guys. We'll be back
- 31:49Speaker 1: with you on Wednesday after just one game in the series,
- 31:51Speaker 1: so we'll have more time to talk about about all that.
- 31:54Speaker 1: But the Twins will enter the series three games behind
- 31:57Speaker 1: Cleveland in the division. Cleveland's second behind the White Socks
- 32:00Speaker 1: by the game, so you sweep them and you know, there,
- 32:04Speaker 1: there you go. You can make a move. But definitely,
- 32:08Speaker 1: of all the recent success the Twins have had in
- 32:10Speaker 1: this stretch, Tyler with with six to the last seven
- 32:13Speaker 1: series victories, that this is one they really could use.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a big one, you know, Cleveland's I've talked
- 32:21Speaker 4: about it a few times before. It's just always a
- 32:23Speaker 4: series where everybody kind of shows up. You know there
- 32:25Speaker 4: there's always a little more electricity in the air or
- 32:28Speaker 4: whatever you want to call it. You know, Fortunately they'll
- 32:31Speaker 4: be missing mister Ramirez, so that's a big piece out
- 32:34Speaker 4: of that lineup that you know you don't have to circle.
- 32:38Speaker 4: But they're still they're scrappy, man. They know how to pitch.
- 32:41Speaker 4: They put the ball in play like they're just they're
- 32:43Speaker 4: just a good baseball team. So that, you know, Twins
- 32:45Speaker 4: better lock up the defense this week and you know,
- 32:48Speaker 4: just keep hitting.
- 32:49Speaker 5: Like there's not a really whole lot to change offensively.
- 32:51Speaker 4: It's now it's just you know, clean up the little
- 32:54Speaker 4: mistakes because a team like this will take full advantage.
- 32:56Speaker 4: And they're fast and you know, they always seem to
- 32:59Speaker 4: have a bullpen that just slams the door, you know,
- 33:02Speaker 4: and they and they've got some good starting too.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Man.
- 33:04Speaker 5: It's it'll be a good series.
- 33:05Speaker 4: It will probably be a hard fought one, probably some
- 33:07Speaker 4: low scoring games, I would I would imagine.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Yeah, they're kind of an opposite team with the Twins.
- 33:12Speaker 1: They don't score a lot, they don't give up a lot.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Something something's got to give.
- 33:17Speaker 6: Dan.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's Taj Bradley and Joey Cantillo on Tuesday. The scheduled
- 33:21Speaker 1: starters Wednesday Connor Prelip against Slade Secone Love that Name,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and then Mike Parade's and Gavin Williams scheduled for Wednesday.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Danie'll be there.
- 33:34Speaker 2: I will be out there, and then we got wrestling Friday,
- 33:37Speaker 2: and we have a Hall of Fame weekend on Saturday.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I think plus to get the draft on Saturday.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Just for my readers. Athletic should have a really cool
- 33:46Speaker 2: feature on Sean Johnson, the Twins draft guru on Thursday.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Lots of good content on We Take It, d Taken.
- 33:55Speaker 2: It's gonna be one to three. It'll be Grady Emerson,
- 33:57Speaker 2: Rock Chilowski or Vaughn.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Man.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Can't Von Lackey from Georgia Tech, who is an awesome catcher.
- 34:07Speaker 2: If they get Rock, they got a shortstop that could
- 34:10Speaker 2: be at the majors very soon. I don't know they're
- 34:13Speaker 2: getting a talented player either way they come out of this.
- 34:16Speaker 3: All three are good picks.
- 34:17Speaker 5: They're getting a top three pick no matter what they are.
- 34:21Speaker 1: There you go, let's they trade it. We'll be back
- 34:25Speaker 1: with you on Wednesday. We'll talk more about Cleveland, the draft,
