- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory Podcast. Happy Snow Day everyone, Sunday, January fifth,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Dak got off of work on Sunday, right, because you're
- 0:28Speaker 1: a big Sunday worker.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, finally gave me a day off. Jesus been helping
- 0:33Speaker 2: for snow finally came.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Not as much as we expected. Question Mark, I guess Austin,
- 0:40Speaker 1: you're in Omaha. You've probably got like nothing.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I know, you guys.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Nothing stuck a little bit on some dirt patches, but
- 0:47Speaker 4: nothing stuck, not like I was supposed to.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Yeah, you guys, got you guys, probably a lot down
- 0:53Speaker 5: there though.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Well, the forecast was like anything from five to I
- 1:01Speaker 1: saw eighteen. I think we end up getting probably about
- 1:05Speaker 1: five or six. So definitely the low end of what
- 1:07Speaker 1: we expected. Was good to see some snow. It's probably
- 1:10Speaker 1: not an opinion that everybody has, but it's winter time.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We got to have some snow on the It's good.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We got a Nebraska basketball game in though yesterday before
- 1:25Speaker 1: everything started up, and what a game it was, beating
- 1:28Speaker 1: the UCLA Brewins sixty six to fifty eight. An ugly slugfest.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And that's our big headline, key headline here today that
- 1:39Speaker 1: we'll kick off with is the impressive job that this
- 1:45Speaker 1: coaching staff continues to do with this team and as
- 1:50Speaker 1: of right now, like you can't ask for much more.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Where we're at through the first fifteen games of the
- 1:58Speaker 1: season for Nebraska.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Basketball, Yeah, I mean outside of like, if you just
- 2:03Speaker 4: look at the record and who we beat, it feels
- 2:05Speaker 4: pretty good. You know, you look at how we lost
- 2:07Speaker 4: our one conference game, but that that feels a long
- 2:10Speaker 4: time ago. You almost forget that it was ugly and
- 2:15Speaker 4: I you know, we know this team goes through hot streaks.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I mean even yesterday were hot in in cold streaks.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I should say yesterday we ended the game on what
- 2:24Speaker 4: seven and a half minute go goal drought something like
- 2:27Speaker 4: that had to be pretty freaking close, and we still
- 2:31Speaker 4: pulled out the win. I liked the tweets going around saying,
- 2:34Speaker 4: you know, welcome to the vault. PBA is where top
- 2:37Speaker 4: twenty teams go to die. Feels a little bit aggressive.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But you know, the last three games all right, all out, Hey, Hey,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Mike Cronino said, the PBA or the atmosphere there did
- 2:48Speaker 2: not matter at all. I mean, I mean, would you
- 2:53Speaker 2: got dba's gotta be like one of the toughest stay
- 2:57Speaker 2: in playing right now.
- 2:58Speaker 1: So that's the that's the conversation. I didn't go to
- 3:02Speaker 1: the game. I Austin, did you go?
- 3:04Speaker 3: Nope, I was on the road.
- 3:06Speaker 5: I think it's we're expensive. I was gonna go.
- 3:08Speaker 2: They were like, I mean expensive hus basketball forty bucks
- 3:11Speaker 2: past fifty bucks piece.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, just I mean just to get in for nosebleeds
- 3:15Speaker 1: and it sold out a couple of days ago. Like
- 3:17Speaker 1: it it is. I don't think it's not a joke anymore.
- 3:22Speaker 1: People say that it is one of the toughest places
- 3:24Speaker 1: to play. It's now twenty game win streak. I believe
- 3:27Speaker 1: at home, and it's not like we're just beating a
- 3:29Speaker 1: bunch of cupcakes, Like, yeah, there's been some close games
- 3:32Speaker 1: and we've beaten some damn good teams in Pinnacle Bank Arena,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and that place seemed like it was rocking. Just by
- 3:40Speaker 1: watching the game and the highlights, it just seemed very
- 3:43Speaker 1: loud for a game that the students are on Christmas break,
- 3:47Speaker 1: like they are technically still not back to then.
- 3:51Speaker 4: And I don't know because I was like, I was
- 3:53Speaker 4: listened to it on the radio and they were saying
- 3:55Speaker 4: they're like, yeah, there are a couple of TV times
- 3:57Speaker 4: just like if there was a TV time out, that
- 4:00Speaker 4: place would have been absolutely like rocking beyond what it
- 4:05Speaker 4: already was. But the TV time that's kind of sucked
- 4:07Speaker 4: a little bit of the air out at some key moments.
- 4:10Speaker 4: But I don't know, on on on the radio, sound
- 4:13Speaker 4: like it was going nuts.
- 4:16Speaker 2: When they've in, they've won twenty in how many of
- 4:19Speaker 2: those twenty been ranked? I mean probably there's a lot
- 4:21Speaker 2: of no names because about the year does all that
- 4:24Speaker 2: but perdue I know last year U C l A.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I mean just a lot of these Big ten games
- 4:31Speaker 1: are Big ten games, and I mean ranked teams for
- 4:34Speaker 1: sure are obviously an added bonus. It is not a
- 4:38Speaker 1: place that anybody wants to play in. Mick Cronin, the
- 4:41Speaker 1: former Cincinnati coach and now at UCLA, known for his
- 4:44Speaker 1: defense and the toughness that they play with. You know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: just joining the Big Ten, having to come to Lincoln,
- 4:51Speaker 1: that's gonna be a little bit of an eye opener.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And don't look now, but is this team? Is this program?
- 4:56Speaker 1: I should say, not this team, but this program, Like
- 4:59Speaker 1: it's weird. We're just kind of sitting at maybe a
- 5:03Speaker 1: constant tournament team type of conversation now year after year,
- 5:07Speaker 1: which is that's where Hoiberg wanted to get this program
- 5:10Speaker 1: the first step anyways for moving it somewhere. It's I'll
- 5:15Speaker 1: say it, it's kind of exact opposite of our football.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Do you think it's because our football program has been
- 5:22Speaker 4: down and we're just excited we're looking for something we're not.
- 5:25Speaker 4: You know, it's such a sad thing to look at
- 5:27Speaker 4: the football program down, like, well, let's look at this
- 5:29Speaker 4: program that's.
- 5:29Speaker 3: On the up.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So I had this thought, and I don't think it's
- 5:37Speaker 1: the reason. But one of the big things that I've
- 5:40Speaker 1: always talked about with the football team is the off
- 5:44Speaker 1: season hype, that added pressure, that the all the conversation,
- 5:49Speaker 1: the publicity, the different things the coaches and players have
- 5:52Speaker 1: to do because of all the coverage and taking away
- 5:56Speaker 1: from actually what matters is winning a football game. I
- 6:00Speaker 1: believe we talked about that last week or two weeks ago,
- 6:02Speaker 1: was it's becoming kind of like the NBA is now
- 6:04Speaker 1: where everybody gets so juiced up about the intangible stuff
- 6:09Speaker 1: but not actually the result of the game, and including
- 6:13Speaker 1: players and coaches like that. I think what happens with
- 6:15Speaker 1: football on the opposite end of the spectrum for basketball.
- 6:21Speaker 1: We just were just like, all right, we'll see what
- 6:24Speaker 1: this team looks like next year.
- 6:25Speaker 4: The week before tip off is when you do your all. Right,
- 6:28Speaker 4: let's break down who's on the roster.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And it was a project because of the football team,
- 6:33Speaker 1: because we are talking about that a lot. And so
- 6:35Speaker 1: as a result, this team is very focused on the
- 6:39Speaker 1: right things and they're putting pieces together that are producing wins.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Even though I mean you look at you look at
- 6:47Speaker 1: this game. I mean that's break down this game itself.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You CLA started up seven oh. Then we went on
- 6:53Speaker 1: a fifteen oh run and UCLA went on a fifteen
- 6:55Speaker 1: oh run. The Nebraska went on a seven oh run,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and we were tied twenty two to two and half.
- 7:01Speaker 1: You look at some of the stats. Bryce Williams is
- 7:04Speaker 1: two for sixteen. I think Connor's season from three like
- 7:11Speaker 1: we got beat right, No way we won this game.
- 7:13Speaker 1: No Like this team found a way to win an
- 7:16Speaker 1: ugly mucket up game, which is exactly the style that
- 7:19Speaker 1: UCLA likes to play with. Like it is it's the
- 7:22Speaker 1: opposite of the football program. And props to Hoiberg and
- 7:25Speaker 1: staff and the program right now for being where we're at.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Not to say we're locked into the tournament and now
- 7:32Speaker 1: we're a top twenty five team and this is awesome. No,
- 7:35Speaker 1: like there's a lot of work to be done, but
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's very impressive. And you go beat Iowa now on
- 7:41Speaker 1: Tuesday on the road.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Probably ranked so.
- 7:48Speaker 4: All right, it's we were talking about this in the car,
- 7:52Speaker 4: me and my brothers, Like, if Fred wins two tournament
- 7:54Speaker 4: games this year, is he the best men's basketball coach
- 7:57Speaker 4: in Husker history?
- 8:00Speaker 3: But I mean you.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Could, you could argue him to argue, and back to
- 8:04Speaker 1: back years puts them up.
- 8:08Speaker 5: As a statue built.
- 8:11Speaker 4: But I think you gotta win a little bit more
- 8:12Speaker 4: than that to get a statue.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Of know, you might only need one here now if
- 8:19Speaker 2: you'd have told me that they I mean U c
- 8:23Speaker 2: l A is now like shooting lights up that they
- 8:25Speaker 2: beat E c A with the season not making a
- 8:27Speaker 2: single three and bright to the Lilliams not being your
- 8:29Speaker 2: lean being your leading score.
- 8:32Speaker 5: I can't remember, but.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I mean from the free throw line. Another thing that
- 8:37Speaker 1: is just like brand new to Nebraska is making free throws.
- 8:42Speaker 2: That that was the type of game though U c
- 8:44Speaker 2: l A wants to play, and you you beat them
- 8:48Speaker 2: in their own style which is because that game was
- 8:50Speaker 2: physical as hell, Like players are all over the floor.
- 8:53Speaker 2: U a player that could not even move moves his
- 8:55Speaker 2: right arm at the end of game, may or me
- 8:59Speaker 2: or whatever how you say. It was just knocking him
- 9:01Speaker 2: over the whole game book and jail and put down
- 9:03Speaker 2: one of the hardest screens I've ever saw. So it's
- 9:08Speaker 2: a physical game.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It yeah, and it worked. That played to our advantage. Uh.
- 9:13Speaker 1: You mentioned Bark he transferred from UCLA last year because
- 9:19Speaker 1: there were guys coming in in the portal slash he
- 9:21Speaker 1: wasn't playing, And I mean you could argue at times
- 9:24Speaker 1: he may be our third best player like that. That's
- 9:28Speaker 1: what's fascinating. I think everybody would, you know, put Bryce
- 9:31Speaker 1: as probably our best. But after that, like, I don't know.
- 9:35Speaker 1: That's what's so great about these past couple of years
- 9:37Speaker 1: of Hoiberg's teams is that you don't know what you're
- 9:41Speaker 1: gonna get on any given night in a good way,
- 9:44Speaker 1: sometimes a bad way, but a lot of times a
- 9:47Speaker 1: good way from all these other guys. And Andrew Morgan
- 9:50Speaker 1: like turns it over on three or four possessions, but
- 9:53Speaker 1: then comes down and dominates the next four possessions in
- 9:57Speaker 1: a row and ends up with twelve points. Goes. Four
- 10:00Speaker 1: were from the free throw line. Like that's what you're
- 10:03Speaker 1: gonna get from these guys, and it's it's awesome because
- 10:05Speaker 1: it's hard to scout, it's hard to game plan for.
- 10:07Speaker 1: You have a lot of pieces, a lot of balanced
- 10:09Speaker 1: pieces with this team that that that's good. And and
- 10:13Speaker 1: Bryce the one guy that we said, okay, he needs
- 10:16Speaker 1: to he needs to do his thing. He still knows
- 10:20Speaker 1: when that switch needs to get turned on. And even
- 10:25Speaker 1: though he didn't shoot great early on from the field,
- 10:27Speaker 1: he got to the free throw line and when we
- 10:30Speaker 1: got there, we made.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Him Andy Katch Player of the Player of the Week,
- 10:34Speaker 4: right m hm. I also felt this was the first
- 10:38Speaker 4: uh Sam Hoiberg game. I felt like we had a
- 10:40Speaker 4: couple of those, and I mean he's had, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 4: a couple of moments, but this is the first one
- 10:43Speaker 4: you're like, oh, there's the Sam Hoiberg from last year
- 10:45Speaker 4: where he just comes in and just steals a couple
- 10:48Speaker 4: of balls, hit hits a three, you know, feisty defense,
- 10:52Speaker 4: gets the ball out of the other player's hand.
- 10:53Speaker 3: This is this is kind of the first Same Hoiberg
- 10:55Speaker 3: game this year that I felt was.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Like, Oh, yeah, there's the the undersized point guard that
- 10:59Speaker 4: if he was four which is taller, he'd probably be
- 11:01Speaker 4: an NBA prospect.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I don't know why he doesn't shoot more threes. It
- 11:05Speaker 2: feels like everyone that he puts up goes in like
- 11:07Speaker 2: he's deep. Barely ever shoots them, but they always go in.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And and I don't even think about that about what
- 11:13Speaker 2: you said about Hoyberg, how he's building these teams with depth,
- 11:16Speaker 2: Like last year you have multiple people that can come
- 11:20Speaker 2: in and you trust.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Now like it's not You're not a stacked team, it's deep.
- 11:24Speaker 2: At the first couple of years, he he just he's
- 11:27Speaker 2: been working for this because he's got the roster and
- 11:29Speaker 2: just kept trying to find players that wanted to play
- 11:32Speaker 2: system and stuff.
- 11:32Speaker 5: And I'll know it's is it is it.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Almost better to have one star player or have multiple
- 11:42Speaker 2: players that are like decent.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Well, look at look at the results of these teams.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I I think the answer is very obvious, at least
- 11:52Speaker 1: for Nebraska basketball right now, is the rosters that we're building.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I did this last night after the game and as
- 12:00Speaker 1: I was talking with some people about Hoiberg and the
- 12:04Speaker 1: transformation that he's undergone with the identity. You're right, Dak, Like,
- 12:09Speaker 1: look at the first couple of years we were he
- 12:12Speaker 1: was trying to build a program that was very star
- 12:16Speaker 1: talented at the top. You know, you mentioned guys like
- 12:20Speaker 1: Kim mack Lonsover.
- 12:21Speaker 5: That was that was the one right there.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I was thinking of Teddy Allen, Like you remember these
- 12:27Speaker 1: guys that that. I mean, the ball had to be
- 12:29Speaker 1: in their hands or they were pissed and it it
- 12:31Speaker 1: looked bad basketball. But they were talented. I mean, they
- 12:35Speaker 1: could make shots and go get their own, but it
- 12:37Speaker 1: didn't produce winning basketball. And and as a result you
- 12:41Speaker 1: saw what happened the transformation to what we're in now.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I mean that this is almost a complete one eighty
- 12:49Speaker 1: from that. It's it's team basketball. I'll say it. It's
- 12:53Speaker 1: basketball that I like to coach. At the basketball that
- 12:57Speaker 1: a lot of people like to watch. The team that
- 12:59Speaker 1: defends and it plays together for each other. They're not
- 13:04Speaker 1: playing for themselves. You can see all those trades, and
- 13:08Speaker 1: there's a lot of praise, but it's well deserved. Right
- 13:11Speaker 1: now on where we're at it, it is very much
- 13:15Speaker 1: of one to eighty from Hoiberg's first couple of years.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I said that I didn't want Hoiberg here anymore. I said,
- 13:20Speaker 1: I remember saying that after the first two years, maybe
- 13:23Speaker 1: even after the third year, it was I thought it
- 13:27Speaker 1: didn't have a chance. And he has flipped it completely
- 13:32Speaker 1: into becoming a potential statue building coach at Nebraska.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Yeah, there are ways away from building statues. But the
- 13:43Speaker 4: other thing one I thought this team were going to
- 13:45Speaker 4: struggle with hype.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Again.
- 13:46Speaker 4: We really haven't played too many large, bigger teams, so
- 13:49Speaker 4: it still could be an issue.
- 13:50Speaker 3: But I've been I mean Beer k and Andrew Morgan.
- 13:53Speaker 4: I felt like if rank Master was back, I mean,
- 13:57Speaker 4: you feel really good about.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Just in me. I mean Braxton Mia. That is his
- 14:03Speaker 1: strength is his length. I think he's what seven to
- 14:06Speaker 1: one or six eleven seven for I don't know, but
- 14:08Speaker 1: his wingspans a couple of longer than that.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Yeah, So we'll see what happens when we get to
- 14:14Speaker 4: against some of the bigger teams, like we handled Creighton,
- 14:16Speaker 4: but they also had a really bad shooting night, so
- 14:18Speaker 4: I don't know how they would pan out when we
- 14:19Speaker 4: get to some of the tougher Big ten teams, but
- 14:21Speaker 4: also the Big ten this year, I mean, who I mean,
- 14:25Speaker 4: you have Rutgers in Maryland. Outside of that, you have
- 14:28Speaker 4: your usual suspects produced you know, up there, but no
- 14:32Speaker 4: one feels unbeatable.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I agree, week in week out, it's they're all going
- 14:38Speaker 1: to be winnable games, and that's what we're doing. I
- 14:41Speaker 1: think to your point about bigger teams, we've you said it,
- 14:44Speaker 1: have done well against those teams in the past. And
- 14:47Speaker 1: I haven't shouted out this guy in a while, but
- 14:49Speaker 1: Nate lens are our decordinator. No, it's incredible the system
- 14:54Speaker 1: and the style that he has implemented that works against
- 15:00Speaker 1: a lot of different offensive attacks, and I do I
- 15:04Speaker 1: think that's a big reason for hoiberg success is some
- 15:07Speaker 1: of the assistant coaches that he got rid of, not
- 15:10Speaker 1: going to name any names there, but got rid of
- 15:11Speaker 1: and replaced with some very very hungry, younger motivated guys
- 15:18Speaker 1: that are doing a very good job right now. So
- 15:23Speaker 1: the program's in a very very good spot. Now. That's
- 15:25Speaker 1: not to say that things can't fall off, and we'll
- 15:28Speaker 1: see how we handle some of this hype. Last year
- 15:30Speaker 1: we handled it very very very well and continued just
- 15:34Speaker 1: to roll when it got to later in the year,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and we earned ourselves a eight seed. I think it was.
- 15:39Speaker 1: In the tournament, six Big Ten teams got in out
- 15:43Speaker 1: of fourteen. This year there's eighteen. I think we're doing
- 15:49Speaker 1: the things now we need to do. But to me,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and this is how I thought of it last year,
- 15:54Speaker 1: win every game at home, which I know is not
- 15:58Speaker 1: locked in, but gosh, it looks better and better every
- 16:01Speaker 1: time we get a home win. And then if you
- 16:03Speaker 1: do happen to drop one, that means you got to
- 16:05Speaker 1: pick one up on.
- 16:05Speaker 4: The road, right, And if we win our Armenian home games,
- 16:08Speaker 4: we're a twenty win team.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yeah, we've beaten.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Maybe I currently looking at our schedule, we have three
- 16:16Speaker 4: teams that are currently ranked.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Left our schedule and none of those are at home. Well,
- 16:21Speaker 3: Illinois at home, but.
- 16:24Speaker 5: On the road.
- 16:24Speaker 3: But pick up the I.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Will win on Tuesday in the row. You know, that's
- 16:27Speaker 1: one that you can that's an added bonus, right, road
- 16:31Speaker 1: wins in the Big Ten Conference. So again, praise for
- 16:35Speaker 1: this game and how this game or this team and
- 16:37Speaker 1: how they're playing right now. It's it's pretty fun to watch.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's it's a very like I said, together team playing
- 16:47Speaker 1: for each other in the crowds behind it, the hype
- 16:50Speaker 1: is going to come. A little number by their name
- 16:54Speaker 1: might be coming sooner than later. Let's see how we
- 16:57Speaker 1: handle that, uh, if we get there and that pressure,
- 17:02Speaker 1: the media, the hype, all that stuff that has in
- 17:06Speaker 1: my mind faulted the football team, Let's see if it
- 17:08Speaker 1: affects a basketball program.
- 17:11Speaker 5: And that's.
- 17:13Speaker 2: The one main thing I still got. I still don't
- 17:16Speaker 2: know what the heck boyer Berks team and the Rascas,
- 17:19Speaker 2: especially last year, Like how different they look at home
- 17:23Speaker 2: compared to the road. Still they look like too totally different. Like,
- 17:27Speaker 2: come out Tuesday and prove you can win on the road. Now,
- 17:30Speaker 2: like you just got throttled by Michigan Stay earlier in
- 17:33Speaker 2: the season on the road.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, like that.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Was a terrible game.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So come out Tuesday proving on the road, and then
- 17:41Speaker 2: from there, I actually will believe this team is really good.
- 17:47Speaker 4: By really good, we mean middle middle seeding tournament team.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, maybe in an eight seed.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think if ideally, you'd be pretty
- 17:59Speaker 1: cool we get to a sixth seed or five seed
- 18:02Speaker 1: that out of all going you know, by getting twenty
- 18:06Speaker 1: three twenty four wins, which we've never done.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Well, that's fir I think I go for a deck.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I'm beyonnest. I have not checked that Big ten basketball.
- 18:17Speaker 2: How is the Big Ten in basketball season? The average stack, it's.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Kind of a product of the whole. I mean, basketball
- 18:24Speaker 4: as a whole is kind of leveled out. Big ten
- 18:26Speaker 4: is gonna beat itself up. There's some talented teams, but
- 18:28Speaker 4: everyone in college basketball is going to be I have
- 18:32Speaker 4: no one's going to have less than probably six losses.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I've said it before.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I think every matchup will be within a seven eight
- 18:39Speaker 1: point spread, no matter who's at home on the road,
- 18:43Speaker 1: who's playing who. I just think the Big Ten is
- 18:45Speaker 1: very balanced that there's no top heavy teams, there's not
- 18:48Speaker 1: really any bottom tier teams. It's all very very balanced.
- 18:54Speaker 1: So that makes every game very exciting to watch. And
- 18:57Speaker 1: you don't feel like when you're going when you go
- 18:59Speaker 1: into a game, you don't don't feel like, man, if
- 19:01Speaker 1: we lose this one, that's a bad loss because a
- 19:03Speaker 1: lot of these games, these teams are still good and
- 19:05Speaker 1: if you win them, yeah, they're good wins, but there's
- 19:07Speaker 1: not I mean, you're not gonna get as much better
- 19:09Speaker 1: than beating U. C. L A. And that's pretty damn close.
- 19:13Speaker 3: If you get blown out like Michigan State.
- 19:15Speaker 4: You feel that's the bad loss because we lost by
- 19:16Speaker 4: what twenty seven, twenty six something like that.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's real bad.
- 19:22Speaker 2: That loss of that bad is like all this this
- 19:24Speaker 2: team sucks like that. That was just all hiphing to
- 19:26Speaker 2: get it. You didn't watch it, that.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Was I still I don't. I haven't not seen a highlight.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I don't even like that game exists right now?
- 19:34Speaker 5: Watch it?
- 19:37Speaker 1: Uh So, yeah, I own Tuesday and then we have
- 19:42Speaker 1: a pretty tough stretch here coming up, so we'll see
- 19:45Speaker 1: how it goes. It'll be another fun team to watch.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And like Austin said too, this is without uh Rank
- 19:53Speaker 1: Mass who's on the bench still helping. That says something
- 20:00Speaker 1: for itself, right that he's still around and you know,
- 20:06Speaker 1: honestly kind of being like a coach, which one of
- 20:08Speaker 1: the players from last year's team is a coach in
- 20:10Speaker 1: Josiah Alec, Like, I just think that tells you the
- 20:12Speaker 1: type of culture right now that's going on in Nebraska
- 20:15Speaker 1: for their basketball program.
- 20:16Speaker 4: People want to be around the program. It's not I'm
- 20:20Speaker 4: here to get mine and I'm gonna leave. It's now
- 20:22Speaker 4: I'm here. I'm here because of us sort.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Of energy take notes football program. And I do think
- 20:29Speaker 1: that the.
- 20:32Speaker 3: The balanced.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Conference, Big Ten Conference and all that conversation in college
- 20:38Speaker 1: football in general is coming. Like it's lagging behind the
- 20:42Speaker 1: basketball college basketball because college basketball and the portal were
- 20:46Speaker 1: a thing much longer, a bigger thing, much longer before football,
- 20:50Speaker 1: and that's.
- 20:51Speaker 4: A smaller, smaller roster. You're going to see that consolidation earlier, and.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Rules rules hinted at that like and it's like he
- 20:58Speaker 1: knows that that's coming, and it is coming week in
- 21:01Speaker 1: and week out. You just got to find a way
- 21:02Speaker 1: to win. And right now we don't do that as
- 21:05Speaker 1: a football program, not yet, not yet, or seems like
- 21:08Speaker 1: maybe we're moving that way. But yeah, any other basketball praise.
- 21:14Speaker 4: No praise women. On the other side of the women,
- 21:17Speaker 4: I've had a little rough go of it, but.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Okay they have. We just got done playing our a
- 21:24Speaker 1: little tough USC UCLA road trip, and I watched a
- 21:30Speaker 1: lot of both of those games. We do a lot
- 21:33Speaker 1: of tamp good things and we are still a very
- 21:37Speaker 1: good basketball team, but especially in women's basketball, it has
- 21:40Speaker 1: been for years. You do have tops talented teams and
- 21:44Speaker 1: talent yes, oh my gosh, and women's basketball like it.
- 21:48Speaker 1: If you have that it is it's it's hard. And
- 21:52Speaker 1: I will say we did some really good things against
- 21:54Speaker 1: both those teams early on, and then by the third
- 21:56Speaker 1: and fourth quarter we just got worn out and just
- 21:58Speaker 1: got doors blown off us. That's what happened both of
- 22:01Speaker 1: those games. So there's a lot of good things there.
- 22:05Speaker 1: It's just it's just hard to compete with those top
- 22:10Speaker 1: tier teams.
- 22:12Speaker 3: It was a really tough scratch.
- 22:13Speaker 4: I mean, U C L, a USC and who's the
- 22:16Speaker 4: other team he lost to those ranked I'm not gonna remember,
- 22:19Speaker 4: but I mean when you lose Natalie Pott's at the
- 22:21Speaker 4: beginning of the year was basically fifteen points, seven rebounds
- 22:24Speaker 4: last year, that's tough to replace. Again, when you're talking
- 22:28Speaker 4: about the top women's the top talent does drive the
- 22:33Speaker 4: games a little more than the men's just because the
- 22:36Speaker 4: floor is not quite caught up to the men's, just
- 22:38Speaker 4: because of the how women's sports have been progressed along
- 22:42Speaker 4: with men's.
- 22:43Speaker 3: But they'll catch up eventually.
- 22:44Speaker 4: But yeah, those top tier schools, they're tough to keep
- 22:49Speaker 4: up with now.
- 22:50Speaker 1: But that being said, we are right now, end of
- 22:53Speaker 1: the third quarter beating Penn State, fifty three to forty.
- 22:56Speaker 1: So it's all in perspective, right and and where the
- 23:01Speaker 1: women's programs at. We have we have had some higher
- 23:04Speaker 1: seeded teams in the tournament, and we do have tournament wins,
- 23:08Speaker 1: and so the women's program still is probably ahead of
- 23:11Speaker 1: the men's where they're at just bars in the entire
- 23:15Speaker 1: Division one landscape. But yeah, but it's it's tough now.
- 23:19Speaker 1: You're as a women's program, You're trying to get to
- 23:21Speaker 1: that next stage, right the next teer up if you can.
- 23:24Speaker 1: That's where you're at. And I think we're still moving
- 23:27Speaker 1: in that direction. I will say Britt Prince is incredible,
- 23:32Speaker 1: Like you watched her, she is.
- 23:37Speaker 3: The key.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I think keeping her here in Nebraska. I don't think
- 23:41Speaker 1: there's any reason she has to leave, but keeping her
- 23:44Speaker 1: around and as a freshman right now, she has a
- 23:46Speaker 1: lot of really good things for us. And we have
- 23:49Speaker 1: good pieces around her too. Losing Pops kills, but some
- 23:54Speaker 1: of these other girls have stepped up and do a
- 23:56Speaker 1: lot of really good things for us. So especially when
- 24:02Speaker 1: teams are keen and on Markowski, I mean, that's what
- 24:03Speaker 1: they're gonna do. After the year she had last.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Year, I mean I'm not. I think we're a tournament team.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I'm not worried about that.
- 24:12Speaker 4: It's just it's just a bummer of what the expectation
- 24:14Speaker 4: was going into this year and then just you know,
- 24:17Speaker 4: losing pots. You didn't realize how much, but because I
- 24:20Speaker 4: really thought we're gonna be a top fifteen team going
- 24:23Speaker 4: into the tournament. And that's probably partly on me for
- 24:27Speaker 4: having those expectations.
- 24:28Speaker 3: But you know how it goes.
- 24:34Speaker 1: All right, move on to football here.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Wait, Dak doesn't want to add anything to the women's basketball.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I'm not even gonna not gonna act like I watched
- 24:41Speaker 2: a second. I can I can make up some stuff,
- 24:45Speaker 2: but I mean, so I've watched the list.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Uh football program, uh some news this week, and I
- 24:55Speaker 1: just I think we're just gonna have to get used
- 24:57Speaker 1: to just chipping this in weekend and week out, because
- 24:59Speaker 1: with the there's always gonna be that. But I would
- 25:03Speaker 1: say the biggest news that came out yesterday was Ed
- 25:07Speaker 1: Foley is no longer with the program, and that was
- 25:11Speaker 1: big news, but I think expected news. As far as
- 25:15Speaker 1: the complete overhaul that rule mentioned with the special teams,
- 25:20Speaker 1: I don't have many reactions to it.
- 25:23Speaker 4: It's nice that we didn't have to fire him. His
- 25:25Speaker 4: contract just expired, yeend it.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Like I think that's fine, that's great. Like I I
- 25:32Speaker 1: don't think he probably should have came back based on
- 25:35Speaker 1: how things have gone and we do. We just we
- 25:37Speaker 1: need to try something different once again.
- 25:39Speaker 4: It is funny going into year three, I feel like
- 25:41Speaker 4: there is a general positive vibe. I know there's doubts,
- 25:44Speaker 4: but there I'd say overall it's a general positive energy.
- 25:48Speaker 4: But usually if you go into a year and you
- 25:50Speaker 4: have a new offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and a special
- 25:52Speaker 4: teams coordinator, you're usually like, oh man.
- 25:55Speaker 3: This is probably the hot seat year. But I don't
- 25:58Speaker 3: think that's the energy. I could be wrong, but.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Well, heh we won our last game, true like it
- 26:07Speaker 1: it is still it was better than last year. It's
- 26:10Speaker 1: a step in the right direction. I don't think it
- 26:12Speaker 1: was the as many steps as a lot of people wanted,
- 26:15Speaker 1: including I think all of us. But I do agree
- 26:20Speaker 1: it's probably a little more positive. I'm just trying to
- 26:25Speaker 1: keep the mindset like the basketball team, like we just
- 26:27Speaker 1: talked about, we'll see, like, we'll see what happens next year.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I it the off season is going to be crazy
- 26:37Speaker 1: as always and.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Yeah, let's get our weekly off season. These players left,
- 26:41Speaker 4: these players are in the ever changing roster.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I was gonna say, are I have not hung the
- 26:46Speaker 1: banner yet for off season national champs? I believe I
- 26:49Speaker 1: did as of last year, So I have not done
- 26:53Speaker 1: that yet.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Well, I mean, we did get a faster quarterback last year.
- 26:56Speaker 1: We did.
- 26:57Speaker 4: There's definitely there was a for a team that hasn't
- 27:01Speaker 4: made a ball game in seven years to get like
- 27:03Speaker 4: the number one or number two quarterback in a class
- 27:06Speaker 4: felt really freaking good.
- 27:09Speaker 3: He did like, that's not let's not lie.
- 27:13Speaker 1: And to that point, before we get into the transfers,
- 27:18Speaker 1: I was I'll say I was wrong again. I did
- 27:22Speaker 1: not think Dylan Royolo would stay after going six and six.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I didn't that was a chance. And I thought that
- 27:31Speaker 1: his his ego and just this entire vibe from the
- 27:38Speaker 1: program would be like I'm gonna go get paid somewhere else.
- 27:40Speaker 1: And there's still gonna be those rumors there that's gonna
- 27:43Speaker 1: last until we he can't transfer into going into next year.
- 27:49Speaker 1: But the fact that he's still here I think does
- 27:51Speaker 1: as positive. I think it's seething you that you, as
- 27:55Speaker 1: a fan won him as your quarterback, which I think
- 27:58Speaker 1: there's some improvements to be made, but I think more
- 28:01Speaker 1: so the pieces that he brings in and the hype
- 28:04Speaker 1: and the other players that he that we are getting
- 28:07Speaker 1: because of him, is even more important right now than
- 28:10Speaker 1: the product on the field. And then once we get
- 28:12Speaker 1: to the season next year, that's when the product of
- 28:15Speaker 1: the field matters. So I'll say that impressive and that
- 28:20Speaker 1: he's still here, that's great, and I think that's good
- 28:22Speaker 1: for the program.
- 28:24Speaker 4: And he's recruiting for us. I mean, he's not just here.
- 28:26Speaker 4: He is investing his own time and effort into bringing people.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Here where there are reports that how much money he
- 28:32Speaker 1: could have gotten, you know if he entered the market.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I mean that that was out there. So you know,
- 28:37Speaker 1: players are doing that, several of them, including potentially some
- 28:41Speaker 1: of these guys. Again, we're not going to know the
- 28:44Speaker 1: true reasoning behind people entering the portal really ever, it's
- 28:49Speaker 1: still very very much the wild West, and people can
- 28:53Speaker 1: just enter and see what they're worth and see if
- 28:56Speaker 1: they want to come back leave. That could be playing time,
- 28:59Speaker 1: could be whatever.
- 29:00Speaker 3: It.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Since last Saturday or Sunday, Jalen Moyd entered the portal again,
- 29:08Speaker 1: the local guy from Omaha didn't play much this year,
- 29:11Speaker 1: and going into the year, I think everybody thought he
- 29:17Speaker 1: was going to see a lot of minutes. Him and
- 29:19Speaker 1: Malachi Coleman, both of them, neither one of them so much.
- 29:23Speaker 1: We bring in two guys from the portal veteran junior seniors,
- 29:29Speaker 1: and j Cory Barney steps up and kind of fills
- 29:34Speaker 1: that spot that you thought Jalen Moyd might be in there,
- 29:38Speaker 1: So he enters a portal. I don't I don't know.
- 29:43Speaker 3: I think.
- 29:46Speaker 1: He probably has a chance or had a chance to,
- 29:49Speaker 1: you know, prove himself here. But you know what, like
- 29:53Speaker 1: we brought in, we're bringing another guy still, and that's
- 29:55Speaker 1: right now seems like to be the strategy of Dana
- 30:00Speaker 1: since he's got here. But even rule like let's go
- 30:03Speaker 1: find veteran wide receivers, and I don't mind that. I
- 30:06Speaker 1: I've kind of got my head to the receiver position
- 30:09Speaker 1: as like, you don't need elite wide receivers. Anybody can
- 30:17Speaker 1: be good at the system and the style.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Creates open space for them.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Correct. So and you see that in the NFL, Like
- 30:25Speaker 1: look at some of the best offenses in the NFL.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Like that.
- 30:29Speaker 1: It doesn't always as around and like the Chiefs, like
- 30:35Speaker 1: what what what do they have for receivers? What have
- 30:37Speaker 1: they had for receivers for years? Not elite? Not elite guys.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Maybe you could have called him e leite, but he's not.
- 30:46Speaker 1: They don't have elite guys like that. The Bills, who
- 30:52Speaker 1: is on digs elite?
- 30:54Speaker 3: Who's the number one receiver this year?
- 30:56Speaker 5: Could you tell me dis elite at killing teams?
- 31:00Speaker 1: I mean, I mean Justin Jefferson rides on the Vikings
- 31:03Speaker 1: and they're having a very good year.
- 31:06Speaker 2: DAK, but they also have three other receiver Yeah, they
- 31:11Speaker 2: have also three other stud ones.
- 31:12Speaker 4: They either need a stud quarterback or three stud receivers.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So is my point. I think that the strategy and
- 31:21Speaker 1: having veteran guys, I think that are a little more
- 31:24Speaker 1: built and at played minutes. I think for the wide
- 31:27Speaker 1: receiver position, I think that it might be okay, now
- 31:31Speaker 1: Banks and they or I don't think panned out to
- 31:33Speaker 1: what we wanted them to be. I don't think we
- 31:35Speaker 1: hit on those guys, but I think it's still a
- 31:39Speaker 1: good strategy to go after from a receiver position, or
- 31:43Speaker 1: at least something to try. Because yeah, jayl Lloyd leaves,
- 31:48Speaker 1: we add another Kentucky receiver hardly Gilmour of the fourth
- 31:54Speaker 1: that follows dain Key who committed the week before, and
- 31:58Speaker 1: then wide receivers coach to kill shortz coming from Kentucky.
- 32:03Speaker 1: So we get a couple of those guys, we get
- 32:08Speaker 1: a linebacker from Georgia Southern that has one year left,
- 32:12Speaker 1: and then the big one that came out yesterday, Thedoni
- 32:17Speaker 1: has said he's not returning and has entered the portal.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Interesting that one was that that one is the other one.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I want to spend some time on here and what
- 32:28Speaker 1: that means. But why this year was a very up
- 32:32Speaker 1: and down year for Thomas. He got benched, I believe
- 32:36Speaker 1: even one game and didn't see the field at all,
- 32:38Speaker 1: like two snaps, and then had some good weeks of
- 32:41Speaker 1: practices according to the staff, and then came off good.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Games after the offensive coordinator switch correct.
- 32:52Speaker 1: So it's interesting to say the least, and both Lloyd
- 32:57Speaker 1: and him. The other thing that I found with FDONI
- 33:02Speaker 1: that someone posted after all this came out, he's like
- 33:06Speaker 1: our sixth career leading reception leader in Nebraska tight end history,
- 33:11Speaker 1: which I was like, holy shit, wow, that's like impressive,
- 33:16Speaker 1: and then like yards he was like seventh, I think,
- 33:18Speaker 1: which I didn't expect in just two years because a
- 33:20Speaker 1: lot of the guys ahead of him more three or
- 33:21Speaker 1: four year guys. He was the number one rated tight
- 33:26Speaker 1: end recruit when we got him in a few classes ago.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Obviously got injured with his knee several times, and he's
- 33:36Speaker 1: not the first time into leave either. Borcature is also gone.
- 33:42Speaker 3: It's just.
- 33:44Speaker 4: I don't know if it was a his decision or
- 33:48Speaker 4: a Dana because I mean there were times where he
- 33:52Speaker 4: when he was slow. I think we all can agree
- 33:54Speaker 4: he looked like he's lost a step. That's for injuries,
- 33:56Speaker 4: which is reasonable, and then there are also a couple
- 33:58Speaker 4: of times where he blew. I mean, he wasn't the
- 34:02Speaker 4: best blocker, so he was slow and not good at blocking,
- 34:05Speaker 4: and they said Dana benched him his first game as
- 34:09Speaker 4: an offensive coordinator. I was like, yeah, I'm not happy
- 34:12Speaker 4: with his performance, and then pumped him up after a
- 34:15Speaker 4: couple of practices. I'm wondering if it's more of a
- 34:20Speaker 4: Dana's like, hey man, we got guys coming in here,
- 34:26Speaker 4: Heiner Carberg switching over to tight end, and I'd rather
- 34:29Speaker 4: have him play than you, So I'm.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Glad you said that I don't know Thomas Padoni at
- 34:37Speaker 1: all personally. I don't have a clue what his mindset is.
- 34:40Speaker 1: I also don't know Dylan Royal as mindset. I don't
- 34:45Speaker 1: know any of the players. I don't know them. But
- 34:48Speaker 1: this time, did Thomas Madoni have a little bit of
- 34:52Speaker 1: I deserve to be on the field because I wasn't
- 34:54Speaker 1: the number one recruit type of attitude and wasn't much
- 34:58Speaker 1: of a team guy, team first guy. I don't know that.
- 35:01Speaker 1: I don't know, but I just speculated when stuff was happening,
- 35:05Speaker 1: and unfortunately, this is the reality of it. When you
- 35:08Speaker 1: see a post on Facebook that flies around of his
- 35:11Speaker 1: mom posting something and in the middle of the year and
- 35:15Speaker 1: complaining about how the coaching staff has ruined for DONI like, sorry,
- 35:20Speaker 1: like parents, parents are idiots of kids that are playing sports,
- 35:23Speaker 1: Like you probably did not put out a good impression
- 35:28Speaker 1: in front of all the other players and coach, not
- 35:30Speaker 1: the coaches, but the other players when that gets put
- 35:32Speaker 1: out out there, like you're trying to build a program
- 35:36Speaker 1: that plays together like the basketball team is doing and
- 35:39Speaker 1: for each other, and your mom goes out and says
- 35:41Speaker 1: that this coaching staff ruined him and because of what
- 35:46Speaker 1: happened and all this stuff, like, yeah, it's hard to
- 35:49Speaker 1: recover from that. It is. It's hard to bounce back
- 35:51Speaker 1: from that at a program that is making a lot
- 35:55Speaker 1: of changes right now and a lot of players see
- 35:57Speaker 1: that and coaches see that. So not blaming it all
- 36:00Speaker 1: on her, but that just I think is the situation
- 36:05Speaker 1: that he was in and why I'm kind of speculating that.
- 36:07Speaker 1: You're right. I think Dame is like, you're either in
- 36:10Speaker 1: or you're out, and if you don't want to be in,
- 36:12Speaker 1: then go, and Thomas said, Okay, I'll go. I think
- 36:16Speaker 1: that could have been how the conversation happened based on
- 36:19Speaker 1: how they were game planning and strategy thing. We're Heiner.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Carberg's the opposite right now. And I'll say it. I
- 36:25Speaker 1: sat behind his mom at the Indiana game and she
- 36:27Speaker 1: was piss pissy, I mean very pissy about Ryola and
- 36:31Speaker 1: you know obviously that game didn't go well. But on
- 36:35Speaker 1: the flip side, he is now instead of taking the
- 36:38Speaker 1: woe is me attitude and throwing fits and making it
- 36:42Speaker 1: a big deal, he's saying, all right, move me positions,
- 36:45Speaker 1: I'll go do this, I'll go play tight end put
- 36:48Speaker 1: me out there and as a result, that's those are
- 36:51Speaker 1: the kind of guys that coaches want, that are that
- 36:54Speaker 1: are Nope, coach, what do you want me to do?
- 36:55Speaker 1: I'll do it? And Heinrich's doing that. So there's very
- 36:59Speaker 1: two opposite comparisons. How kids would also parents and have
- 37:04Speaker 1: an impact in what it means of being a part
- 37:07Speaker 1: of a team.
- 37:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think. I don't even the coach is
- 37:12Speaker 5: killed for day. I think that was injuries.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I don't like he He was just so
- 37:18Speaker 2: slow all year long. And he's even the most playable,
- 37:21Speaker 2: like said most time. But but these three Coleman, Fidoni,
- 37:25Speaker 2: and Lloyd, I don't think he really made those guys
- 37:28Speaker 2: at all. You you didn't use them that much. And
- 37:31Speaker 2: I I think Harvard it's not much harder. It's not
- 37:34Speaker 2: very hard to be a better Tedding than if Fidoni was.
- 37:36Speaker 2: I think he's already gonna be better. So you got
- 37:40Speaker 2: him in there, and then you got other trans Rice
- 37:42Speaker 2: heiers are coming in are probably better than one.
- 37:43Speaker 5: Coleman. Like, it's not you're not a curusing.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Much now Coleman is gonna go out and dominate Minnesota.
- 37:49Speaker 5: But no, no, I.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Don't now.
- 37:56Speaker 5: Now I do. I do wish they would have.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Used those two more though last year why they did
- 38:03Speaker 2: not at all, it's it's.
- 38:08Speaker 1: It's fun to talk about, right and try to make
- 38:13Speaker 1: things potentially big things, and when maybe they are, maybe
- 38:16Speaker 1: they aren't. I think bottom line is with all these
- 38:19Speaker 1: guys coming in and leaving and doing it, it's that's
- 38:24Speaker 1: your strategy. That's what you believe in, playing Malachi Coleman
- 38:27Speaker 1: versus read shirting, and that's part of your strategy and
- 38:30Speaker 1: your long term vision. Using Jalen Lloyd, using Thomas Fedoni
- 38:36Speaker 1: with what you think you can get out of him
- 38:37Speaker 1: with his injury, Like, that's all part of your your
- 38:40Speaker 1: scheme and your game plan. And then when you get
- 38:42Speaker 1: to the off season, you have another picture of what
- 38:45Speaker 1: you want your roster to look like next year. And
- 38:47Speaker 1: that was earlier when I was saying, I think this
- 38:50Speaker 1: coaching staff wants to go get veteran guys. We might
- 38:52Speaker 1: just be doing that year in and year out, like
- 38:54Speaker 1: even Nayer's not sticking around, so we were we're getting
- 38:59Speaker 1: this new guys, and then that's part of your strategy,
- 39:01Speaker 1: that's part of your game plan. That's been Nebraska basketball
- 39:04Speaker 1: strategy over the last couple of years, and it's working.
- 39:07Speaker 1: The key thing is it's working football. It needs to work.
- 39:11Speaker 1: And you can say this is right or wrong, and
- 39:14Speaker 1: we didn't use these guys right, or we use this
- 39:16Speaker 1: guy too much, or you can say that better be
- 39:20Speaker 1: winning games one way or the other. It doesn't matter
- 39:22Speaker 1: what you're doing, but that's part of your conscious decision
- 39:25Speaker 1: of how you're structuring your team win football games.
- 39:28Speaker 4: What does it say when we have the most expensive
- 39:30Speaker 4: tight ends coach in the country and we've lost our
- 39:32Speaker 4: top two tight ends from last year.
- 39:41Speaker 1: That's what's great about this era. And I'll say it.
- 39:44Speaker 1: I still think rule is right now the option that
- 39:49Speaker 1: we need to go with. As far as navigating everything,
- 39:51Speaker 1: every school is navigating it in what they think is
- 39:54Speaker 1: the right way. I heard someone talk about Saban and Alabama,
- 40:00Speaker 1: and I can't remember who this was, but basically they
- 40:03Speaker 1: said Saban knew he messed up like Saban got was
- 40:09Speaker 1: old school and got behind the times and he figured
- 40:11Speaker 1: out that, oh crap, I'm lagging behind Tennessee, Kirby Smart
- 40:17Speaker 1: at Georgia Ole Miss and Kiffin, I'm lagging behind the
- 40:22Speaker 1: times of Nil and the portal and it's I'm not
- 40:26Speaker 1: gonna do this. I'm gone. Like, not that that was
- 40:29Speaker 1: the sole reason, but I think that how was like,
- 40:31Speaker 1: that's that's fascinating, and you.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Can win the title the next five years. He would
- 40:35Speaker 3: have stuck around. Yeah.
- 40:36Speaker 1: And and so then Kaylen de Bor comes in and
- 40:38Speaker 1: he's got his own strategy, right, it's different. Did it
- 40:42Speaker 1: work this year, I'd say no, like compared to what
- 40:45Speaker 1: the expectations were for Alabama. But at the same time,
- 40:50Speaker 1: that's his that's that's his big picture program, how he
- 40:53Speaker 1: thinks it needs to be built. He was a lot
- 40:55Speaker 1: more mucky mucky with the players. And I saw someone
- 40:59Speaker 1: celebrate or do something early on in the year and
- 41:00Speaker 1: they're like, oh my god, can you imagine what would
- 41:02Speaker 1: have happened to that guy under Saban, Like it's just
- 41:06Speaker 1: a different philosophy in how you want to coach. And again,
- 41:10Speaker 1: a lot of different ways can win games. But that's
- 41:13Speaker 1: the result is winning games. If you can do it
- 41:16Speaker 1: based on what you come up with, then great. If
- 41:19Speaker 1: you're not, then you're not a good coach. That's just that.
- 41:22Speaker 1: That is what it is. And and rule went from
- 41:25Speaker 1: five wins to six wins technically seven with the Bowl
- 41:28Speaker 1: game win. Okay, great, like that's progress. Let's continue to
- 41:34Speaker 1: build on that and see where it ends up next year.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's it's interesting. I this.
- 41:41Speaker 4: I just got back from a holiday family gathering in
- 41:45Speaker 4: my uncle who's a diehard Wazoo fan, Washington State fan,
- 41:48Speaker 4: and he's talking about from the perspective of the two pack,
- 41:52Speaker 4: and he just he's like, I just hope everything burns.
- 41:54Speaker 3: I just want the world just a follow a part of.
- 41:56Speaker 4: The mil everything, like we got screwed over in a
- 42:00Speaker 4: bad game of musical chairs and everyone no one else
- 42:03Speaker 4: is ready, but we're gonna be just this lone wolf,
- 42:06Speaker 4: you know, watching State against the world, and when everything
- 42:09Speaker 4: falls apart, we're gonna be ready. It's it was interesting.
- 42:11Speaker 4: It's funny. There's just a lot of perspective out there.
- 42:17Speaker 5: Is he is he from here?
- 42:19Speaker 3: No, he's from Washington.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Guy's gonna say if he's die or what he died from?
- 42:24Speaker 2: Washington State fan?
- 42:28Speaker 5: H Yeah.
- 42:29Speaker 2: I rule really flipped around from the beginning of the
- 42:33Speaker 2: portal because everyone was dipping out right as Tony White left,
- 42:36Speaker 2: and now he's got he's kind of rebounded here with
- 42:38Speaker 2: all his all these players coming in a lot of
- 42:42Speaker 2: offensive though I don't the defensive side of the ball.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Still might be a little tricky next year.
- 42:48Speaker 2: I don't know that that's that'll be the in I
- 42:50Speaker 2: think your offense will be fine next year. Well, if
- 42:53Speaker 2: I all improve, we'll see about that. But I think
- 42:57Speaker 2: your defense is gonna be the side of the ball
- 42:59Speaker 2: you're definitely be the most worried about next year.
- 43:01Speaker 5: But transfer still could still come in.
- 43:04Speaker 1: It is it's at this it's the timing of in
- 43:06Speaker 1: the lack of structure really around it. And I'm sure
- 43:08Speaker 1: there's more than we know with the dates and stuff
- 43:11Speaker 1: that you can enter and visit and sign and whatever,
- 43:15Speaker 1: but there is still things that come. And obviously the
- 43:18Speaker 1: first step is leaving, so you're gonna have more eyes
- 43:21Speaker 1: leaving than coming in.
- 43:24Speaker 4: I say, the disappoint defense, I think we've got our
- 43:26Speaker 4: top endrew like potential guys have been on the defensive side,
- 43:31Speaker 4: but we've had much more proven offensive guys. Man, it'd
- 43:37Speaker 4: be nice to Xavier watch transferred back home, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 4: just to nice little that's not happening.
- 43:43Speaker 1: But uh So, that was the last thing I want
- 43:46Speaker 1: to talk about today, and was the culturable playoff and
- 43:50Speaker 1: the quarterfinals now wrapped up. We got Texas, We've got
- 43:56Speaker 1: Notre Dame, we got Penn State, and we got.
- 44:03Speaker 3: The Ohio State University.
- 44:05Speaker 1: State University. It's based on them someone, I guess I'll
- 44:11Speaker 1: call them new But you know, these are all bad,
- 44:13Speaker 1: very good years overall, but all had their lapses at times.
- 44:20Speaker 1: All also played home games first round, right, yeah, these
- 44:29Speaker 1: are the four teams that had the home game. So
- 44:33Speaker 1: I just I'm laughing because this whole playoff thing has
- 44:36Speaker 1: caused more conversation about what's good and bad about it
- 44:40Speaker 1: than anything else. And I guess I don't care, like,
- 44:46Speaker 1: let it play out, let it be, let it like
- 44:48Speaker 1: this was great for especially this year when there wasn't
- 44:51Speaker 1: any great teams.
- 44:53Speaker 4: And do we, like I said, do we think that
- 44:55Speaker 4: the first round buy was a negative for anyone? Do
- 44:57Speaker 4: we think anyone got a disadvantage from.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Being the first round by No?
- 45:01Speaker 1: This is how this is how the media works. Though
- 45:03Speaker 1: if every one of the top four seeds would have won,
- 45:06Speaker 1: that the narrative would have been they don't they all
- 45:11Speaker 1: got a break and they all did to play an
- 45:14Speaker 1: extra game where these other you know, these teams that
- 45:16Speaker 1: are better, right, got got screwed because they had to
- 45:19Speaker 1: play an extra game. But since all four of them one,
- 45:22Speaker 1: now the narrative is everything with the buys is all
- 45:25Speaker 1: messed up and guaranteed it's just that's exactly how the
- 45:32Speaker 1: public and everybody talks about talks about it all. So
- 45:36Speaker 1: I don't let it play out, enjoy it like this,
- 45:39Speaker 1: especially this year, with in probably years to come that
- 45:43Speaker 1: it's gonna be chaos. It's gonna be parody week after week,
- 45:47Speaker 1: and teams are gonna play well on that. But who
- 45:49Speaker 1: can string together three wins or four in a row
- 45:53Speaker 1: to win a national title? This year? Did we get
- 45:55Speaker 1: the four best teams? I mean the left, I don't know, Like.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I think it's close. I mean I think for sure
- 46:04Speaker 3: Oregon probably could have been in there.
- 46:08Speaker 1: But the bottom line is the team that wins.
- 46:12Speaker 3: I know, I agree, I agree.
- 46:14Speaker 1: That's the best team. And that's how there's called basketball.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Same way people are always got kind of debate the
- 46:20Speaker 1: seating and the regions, and people get screwed in O. Well,
- 46:24Speaker 1: if you win six in a row, you're the champ.
- 46:27Speaker 1: You're the best team. Like that's what tournaments are for.
- 46:30Speaker 1: And everyone want to say, well, Alabama could have been.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Alabama just gets killed by Michigan. So like I it
- 46:40Speaker 1: is what it is. And the best team is going
- 46:42Speaker 1: to be the one that ends up at the top,
- 46:43Speaker 1: and that's what matters.
- 46:46Speaker 4: Maybe not necessarily the best team, but the deserving team
- 46:50Speaker 4: they want to deserve. Like yes, because like, yeah, like
- 46:53Speaker 4: I said, I agree, it's probably the top four. Oregon
- 46:56Speaker 4: did beat O High Stand and Penn State. You're best
- 46:57Speaker 4: probably one team. You're like, well, maybe they could win it,
- 46:59Speaker 4: but who cares?
- 47:00Speaker 3: They lost?
- 47:00Speaker 2: So they got they got throttle.
- 47:04Speaker 1: And and teams change over the year, like game got
- 47:08Speaker 1: beat by Northern Illinois. Northern Illinois fans are like, we
- 47:11Speaker 1: beat this team that's in the all. I guess what
- 47:13Speaker 1: that was week one? And what matters is are you
- 47:18Speaker 1: judging the best team by the entire season or are
- 47:21Speaker 1: you judging them by where they end up at the
- 47:23Speaker 1: end of the year. It's the end of the year, people,
- 47:25Speaker 1: That's what matters. The first parts of the year, coaches
- 47:28Speaker 1: strategize and try things and do things with players to
- 47:31Speaker 1: get themselves ready to win the important games end of
- 47:34Speaker 1: the year, and you might slip up and lose one.
- 47:37Speaker 1: So at the end of the year, we went the
- 47:40Speaker 1: other way.
- 47:42Speaker 2: You know, you know what's interesting about these four teams
- 47:45Speaker 2: is I would say, I know if they are for sure,
- 47:49Speaker 2: three out the four teams I would say are built
- 47:51Speaker 2: off defense, Like that's the strength their team.
- 47:56Speaker 5: My house, stay on.
- 47:56Speaker 2: You probably say their offense is better, but they have
- 47:58Speaker 2: they have gained a defense. That's an interest. Also real
- 48:05Speaker 2: quick here texts got really lucky.
- 48:08Speaker 1: God, that was the hell of a game.
- 48:10Speaker 2: I will see that we should give our hats off
- 48:12Speaker 2: to scatter Boot for his performance.
- 48:13Speaker 5: That was that was amazing.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, agree, I.
- 48:20Speaker 3: Said Bull season review. I'm glad the SEC just shipped
- 48:24Speaker 3: the bed for the most part.
- 48:26Speaker 4: I mean, Texas almost Texas almost allowed this perfect moment,
- 48:29Speaker 4: but they got They snuck by with one.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Uh, Colorado got blown out. Was great. Iowa losing was great.
- 48:37Speaker 4: And I'm gonna say it, the Pop Turck Bowl it's
- 48:39Speaker 4: better than any of the other Bulls. It's by part
- 48:42Speaker 4: of the best. Like I have much more excited for
- 48:43Speaker 4: the Pop Tart Bowl than I was the Sugar Bowl.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Be at the Bowl. Maybe not the Rose Bowl, but.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I mean, all these playoff games sucked besides the Texas one.
- 48:55Speaker 2: No name Georgia's all right, but that was that was
- 48:57Speaker 2: a boring game, Like it wasn't that fun to watch. Well,
- 49:01Speaker 2: I think next year they're gonna have to flip around
- 49:03Speaker 2: these seeings something like totally.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Different teams next year, Like what's like, what are we okay?
- 49:13Speaker 1: I know That's what's funny this year is like who
- 49:16Speaker 1: would have thought that Boise State everyone just assumed that
- 49:19Speaker 1: the non power forward team would have been the five seeds,
- 49:22Speaker 1: right like they just everybody assumed that just that was
- 49:25Speaker 1: the assumption. They weren't even the four. They heard the three.
- 49:29Speaker 1: So I'm just like people just need to let it
- 49:32Speaker 1: be and chill, like I I you're right that things
- 49:35Speaker 1: probably won't get moved around and changed, but like twenty
- 49:39Speaker 1: more teams, it's whatever, like that, we're gonna get the
- 49:44Speaker 1: champion and the most deserving best team whatever you wanna
- 49:48Speaker 1: call it. We're gonna get that.
- 49:49Speaker 3: Hopefully it's a good game.
- 49:51Speaker 4: Hopefully the next two games are good games, because yeah,
- 49:53Speaker 4: they're none of them.
- 49:55Speaker 1: If they're not, and someone comes down and kicks the
- 49:57Speaker 1: crap out of both their games and great, like yeah
- 50:01Speaker 1: that's off, like great job.
- 50:03Speaker 4: As a view, I'm not I guess yeah, I mean,
- 50:06Speaker 4: at this point I'm pulling for Big ten teams, so
- 50:08Speaker 4: I like Penn State and Ohio State to win.
- 50:11Speaker 1: That'd be awesome. In the finals, I will say, that'd
- 50:13Speaker 1: be sweet.
- 50:14Speaker 2: And I can't advice to this last podcast, But when
- 50:18Speaker 2: we had four teams, how many of those games were
- 50:20Speaker 2: good in the semifinals?
- 50:21Speaker 5: Never you had You're right, I don't know how. There's
- 50:26Speaker 5: just a couple of Michigan Georgia.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Was the only one I can Yeah, none of those
- 50:31Speaker 2: games were that close either, and title games you get
- 50:33Speaker 2: TCU Georgia and stuff like that, like there was. There's
- 50:36Speaker 2: never been like all around great games during these playoffs.
- 50:39Speaker 2: But would you rather watch these teams in the playoffs or.
- 50:42Speaker 5: The Peach Bowl?
- 50:45Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 50:46Speaker 5: But actually Peach Bowl might be a playoff game.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I think it is.
- 50:50Speaker 5: It is the pump.
- 50:52Speaker 4: Tart twelve rules man, sign me up, the sprinkles on
- 50:56Speaker 4: the sideline, the tinfoil raptor on the posts, come on, rules.
- 51:01Speaker 5: DJ play getting mail, Dundunion didn't pump you up?
- 51:05Speaker 4: No, that's not it. Give me pop tarts. I hope
- 51:09Speaker 4: that next year that'd be great.
- 51:12Speaker 1: That give me your I'll get you some time here.
- 51:15Speaker 1: You got the vikings coming up? Give me all your
- 51:17Speaker 1: predictions because by the time this airs, the game will
- 51:19Speaker 1: be over and will know what happened. Give me your
- 51:21Speaker 1: entire thoughts on this big game coming up here in
- 51:23Speaker 1: a couple hours against the Lions.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Oh.
- 51:27Speaker 2: I so last week I was super common thinking me
- 51:30Speaker 2: the Packers. This one, I'm not as confident, but I'm
- 51:34Speaker 2: still I think we're gonna put up forty plus points
- 51:38Speaker 2: on the Lions. Now, tough part is ever gonna be
- 51:41Speaker 2: able to stop them or scoring forty plus. I think
- 51:43Speaker 2: this is if you have go throw all your bank
- 51:46Speaker 2: count on the over. I don't have no looks to
- 51:48Speaker 2: what it is because I don't think either defense is
- 51:51Speaker 2: can be able to stop the other offense. I think
- 51:53Speaker 2: Lin's offense is that good and the Lion's defense is
- 51:57Speaker 2: that terrible that.
- 51:57Speaker 5: The Vikings just gonna go up and down the field
- 51:59Speaker 5: onto Now.
- 52:03Speaker 1: I don't.
- 52:05Speaker 2: I think he'll come down a funeral kicking at the end,
- 52:07Speaker 2: which our kicker is kind of a mess right now,
- 52:09Speaker 2: not good like last time came down to They came
- 52:13Speaker 2: down a fuel kicking too, their kicker drilled at being
- 52:16Speaker 2: to be as I think these two are about as
- 52:18Speaker 2: even as it gets like it's gonna be hell about
- 52:23Speaker 2: now can.
- 52:24Speaker 4: Say that because the Lions are like a super Bowl favorite,
- 52:26Speaker 4: like typeer super Bowl favorites. So you're basically saying the
- 52:29Speaker 4: Vikings are super Bowl favorites.
- 52:30Speaker 5: Oh I think they are.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go say it?
- 52:35Speaker 5: Can any team stop?
- 52:36Speaker 2: Howkinson Addson Jefferson, That's that's the question. And now things
- 52:42Speaker 2: scares me. As Darnald does, I feel like I have
- 52:44Speaker 2: a game in him that he's just gonna throw five picks, Like,
- 52:47Speaker 2: can you keep doing this?
- 52:49Speaker 1: I don't know how nervous one to ten Huh? How
- 52:54Speaker 1: nervous scale one to ten.
- 52:57Speaker 5: Sticks?
