- speaker-0: I didn't understand that it's all woven in this amazing story of salvation and redemption. Like I didn't know I didn't get how they were connected. speaker-1: You know, it's one of those funny things. Well, it's not funny. I don't know why I said it's funny. It's actually ⁓ really sad actually that there are many pastors today who are like, Well, you know, the old testament is irrelevant. We don't even need the old testament. Many pastors, I think, think the entire word of God is irrelevant. But there are so many connections to be made between the Old Testament, New Testament, and how God's story is God's story. Talk about that for a minute and how I mean that that's an important part of teaching our kids. The word of God is all of the connections that are made within it because it just proves that God's word is true, right? speaker-0: Yes. I think it's just so important and and maybe one of the more important things for us to remember when we're helping our kids study the Bible. And that's because, you know, we everywhere they go, Sunday school, all these places, people are telling them stories. Right. And the stories are focused on characters. ⁓ they're not about God. Right. ⁓ they should be, but they're not. You know, they're like, ⁓ here's David. Isn't he cool? ⁓ and just so you know, if you read the whole Bible, David wasn't so cool. But a little later he gets into some big trouble. Yeah. And so if we don't help our kids to understand that a story, an isolated story in the Bible is not about David, but about God, instead that we they're missing the connection. So when they keep going and they see, ⁓ wait, David fell. David did these things. Do you know the story of Bathsheba? Yes, I do. But the story of Bathsheba and David is not about them either. It's about God. And it's about his mercy and his forgiveness for all of us, which is desperately needed by us, right? So we but we look in the story and we're like, ⁓ David was David was a bad guy now. Well, David was a good guy. David's a bad that's not what the Bible is about. Bible is about God's story. And so making those connections right is going to be really, really important for your kids so that they can See the Bible as a whole. I'm embarrassed to admit that going to again growing up in the church, it wasn't until I went through a Bible study on Genesis that as an adult that I understood that the the all of those stories and the Jacob and the Isaac and all those people were related. Can you believe that? I didn't know. I didn't know they were related. And not only did I not know they were related, but didn't understand that it's all woven in this amazing story. of salvation and redemption. Like I didn't know. Who knew? I didn't get how they were connected. And so that is if there's anything with that we can teach our kids about it. It's not all the details. Because they don't have to remember every little person and every little thing. And I don't even think in this age you have to remember exactly where to find a piece of scripture in the Bible. Like there's Google, right? Yeah. So you can find what you need, but what you need to know is how does this connect? How does this paint the whole picture of who God is? So when you read a passage, even if you don't use a Bible study, one question you can always ask is, what did we learn about God here? And if we keep it focused there, we'll be much better off than, you know, who was in the story? What did they do? How can we apply this to our lives? I hate that question in the Bible study. I hate it. Because it's not a bad question. Right. The thing is, it's just not always what the what the p Bible is about. Right. You know, the Bible is really about how do we Right. You know, ⁓ connect also how do we relate this to what God who God is and how do we see that? And so that's what we want to get. speaker-1: This episode of Homeschool Insights is brought to you by BJU Press Homeschool, CTC Math, and the Explorer Bible for Kids.
